We hiked and climbed this rather difficult trail with superb views as one of our last challenging hikes last year. Absolutely gorgeous.

From the exit at the northern end of the parking area, follow a short unmarked trail uphill and turn left onto the blue-blazed Table Rocks Trail, which parallels Spring Farm Road. As the trail reaches the top of a rise, a broad panoramic view of the Catskill Mountains -- known as the "Million Dollar View" -- appears to the left. Just beyond, you'll reach a junction with the Crag Trail. Turn right and follow this trail, which follows a row of cedar trees, continues on a wide path across a field, and parallels an old stone wall along the left side of another field.

After about 15 minutes of uphill walking, the trail crosses two carriage roads - Cedar Drive and Spring Farm Road - in quick succession. You'll now notice some red blazes along the trail route. The Crag Trail continues to climb, rather steeply in places, reaching its terminus -- about one mile from the start of the hike -- at the intersection of Cedar Drive with Bonticou Road.

Make a broad left turn onto Bonticou Road (do not turn sharply left onto Cedar Drive, which descends rather steeply). This level carriage road soon curves to the right, with trees growing out of the thin layers of deeply tilted shale on the hillside. After the road bends to the left, then again to the right, the imposing Bonticou Crag comes into view through the trees on the left. Watch carefully for a triple yellow blaze on the left side of the road, marking the start of the Bonticou Ascent Path. When you reach this yellow-blazed trail, turn left and follow it downhill to a junction with the blue-blazed Northeast Trail.

Beyond this intersection, the Bonticou Ascent Path continues over giant talus fragments and steeply ascends the jagged rock face of Bonticou Crag, climbing over ledges and through crevices. This rock scramble - which requires the use of both hands and feet - should not be attempted by those who lack agility and confidence. It is generally considered to be the most difficult rock scramble in the Mohonk area, and it will probably take about 20 minutes to climb to the top of this massive outcrop of white Shawangunk Conglomerate. (Those who wish to bypass this difficult climb should turn left on the Northeast Trail, follow it northward for about half a mile, then - after a rather steep ascent - turn right onto the northern branch of the yellow-blazed Bonticou Ascent Path, which follows a more gradual route to the top of Bonticou Crag.)

Near the top of the climb, the yellow-blazed route ascends through pines and laurels to reach the crest of the ridge. Turn right to reach the open summit of Bonticou Crag, studded with pitch pines. On a clear day, there are views northwest to the Catskills, northeast to Stissing Mountain and Dutchess County, and southeast to the Hudson Highlands. The Village of New Paltz may be seen below to the southeast.

After resting from the difficult climb and enjoying the spectacular view, head north and descend on the northern leg of the yellow-blazed Bonticou Ascent Path. (It may be difficult to locate the trail at the top of the Crag; if so, bear right as you descend, and the trail should soon become evident.) Follow the trail as it gradually descends through pines and laurels to end at a junction with the blue-blazed Northeast Trail. Turn left and follow the blue-blazed trail, which descends rather steeply. At the base of the descent, you'll reach a junction with the red-blazed Cedar Trail. Turn right and follow the Cedar Trail, which crosses a wet area on puncheons, passes an old stone foundation to the right, and crosses a stream on rocks. It climbs along an old stone wall and continues through a former field, now overgrown with young trees.

When you reach Cedar Drive, turn right and follow this carriage road, which descends gradually. At the next Y-intersection, bear left, following the sign for "Cedar Drive." In another 200 feet (just beyond where the "Cedar Drive Circle" rejoins from the right), turn right onto the red-blazed Cedar Trail, which descends a short distance to end at the blue-blazed Table Rocks Trail. Turn left and follow the Table Rocks Trail for about half a mile back to the Spring Farm parking area. Along the way, you will pass the Slingerland Pavilion and the historic buildings of Spring Farm below to the right and cross Spring Farm Road.

I have been here multiple times and loved every minute of it! Try the trails going on the edge of cliffs, they have great views.

You need to be in good shape--fitting into tight crevices, climbing wet rocks. You will leave tired, dirty and sweaty. Not to say it's not fun, but it's hard work

This is such a beautiful area to hike. If you are a beginner there are some easy trails if you are advanced there are longer steeper trails. Scenery is gorgeous and there are stunning views. Very picture worthy!

Stopped at the Visitors Center after driving by it many times over the years. Got a map and looked at our hiking options. Only had a short time. We picked the easy Undercliff/Overcliff Trail. Nice work out on a cool spring day with the sun peeking through the clouds. Stopped to watch nimble free climbers find toe holds on the Schwangunk cliffs. Commonly known as the “Gunks” by climbers who come from all over the world to learn and practice their technique. Not us. We are hikers, not climbers. Lots of fun!

We enjoy the Preserve and All It Offers. It is truly nature at it's best with the many trails and sights you see from every corner. Picturesque so make sure you bring your cameras and video recorders. Make you stop learn the interesting facts about Mohonk and the surrounding area.

This is a place for every nature lovers.
The trail, the lake, the boat, the "beach", and the view! Come during the leaves season, it's the one of the best in northeast.
You don't have to stay in the resort (super expensive), they do offer day pass. Come early, as they sometimes sell out day passes (only allow certain amount of people on the mountain).

My girlfriend and I drove up to New Paltz this past weekend to explore and our first stop was right here at the Mohonk Preserve. The visitor center was very pleasant and well-kept and the people working there were very kind and helpful. They asked us what level of hike we were looking for and since we were new to the area we went with the mid-level trail which was a 5 mile circle around Undercliff and Overcliff Rd. Unfortunately, the foggy conditions proved to be detrimental to the views, but it was a beautiful and accessible trail otherwise. I wish we could've stayed longer and hiked some of the other, more difficult trails.

I went on a day hiking pass with my friend to the Mohonk Mountain right off the resort (it’s $27pp) to enter the hiking path which is approximately 2.5 miles to go to the Sky Top Tower. Oh, what a sight to behold!
The trailing path is well maintained , with enough directions for your preferred route.
We also walked around the resort and took pictures, which they allow for day hikers.
It was an amazing trip and would recommend to hike-lovers .

There are plenty of places to rock scramble but if you just want fresh air, exercise, beauty, distance, you've got miles and miles of rolling hills with reasonably good footing all the way.

By Daniel M |

Very friendly people/staff and an outstanding Rnager staff to help guide you. Do stop in the Visitor Center to see the topographic map to see the cliffs, it really gives one a better idea of the landscape.

By Susan K |

it's been many years' since stayed there, but it is one of the reasons I chose to move back to this region of NY state. (I traveled here more than 15 years' ago, but travel dates don't go back that far.)

Miles and miles of well-maintained mountain biking/hiking/cross-country skiing carriage roads. Rock climbing haven. Breath-taking views accessible by hiking onto the cliffs overlooking a huge valley.

Had an amazing day at the Gunks w/Simeon of High Xposure. The day exceeded my expectations and I'll definitely be back. I've never climbed before outside of bouldering at the local gym so I really didn't know what to expect. First off, if you can go during the week, I'd Highly Recommend it. We basically had the Gunks to ourselves as compared to the busy weekends. Take a day off from work....it's worth it! Simeon was a fantastic guide. He really went over the basics and at all times it was about safety. He knew when to add tips (look at your feet not up) but also let me figure out rock holds on my own. By the end of the day, I felt extremely comfortable belaying, repelling, removing gear and of course, climbing. We warmed up with some smaller 60 foot cliffs before tackling a 3 pitch 200 foot climb. Being someone who doesn't love heights, I was beyond nervous and never expected to climb that high but felt completely safe. At each step, Simeon would demonstrate how I was secured and made sure I was rested and comfortable before moving on. I went from never climbing to scaling a 200 foot cliff above the tree line....unreal. The view was magnificent and it was a rush and sense of accomplishment unlike anything I've felt. To top if off, at the top we looked down on a falcon scaring off a red tail hawk from it's nest....literally NatGeo in the flesh. I can't say enough about the day and my guide Simeon. We climbed from 9 am to 5:30 pm and Simeon offered to continue (but my body was saying otherwise). When you spend money on a day trip like this, you really have high expectations. And for me, HIgh Xposure and my guide completely exceeded them. It was an amazing day at the Gunks and I can't recommend this company enough!

Relatively easy walking trails to the best views! There are more challenging hikes available but we did not experience those.

By Joshua A |

Such awesome day trip to go and hike. The town hosts a great selection of beer, food and awesome times. Don't be scared New Paltz won't bite, more like a little slap and tickle ;)

By Eirini D |

Gorgeous views, well marked trails.
Our tween enjoyed the labyrinth a lot!! She said she didn't expect it to be so much fun. It is a "trail" that is essentially in rocks. At the beginning, with the big map there are pics that show what to expect fir the trails. In the labyrinth, please know that there are some small wooden ladders involved. At all points though you have a place to grab with hands and feet. For me who is agile but easily scared, I had to go down some rocks sitting and sliding.
The regular trails are awesome.
The views are spectacular.
The paper map they give you at the entrance is not very accurate. Thankfully we had taken a pic of the big map at the parking lot and that was helpful.
We were glad we were there on a Friday when other families have school because we suspect it can become crowded in the labyrinth.
We also enjoyed the pedal boat on the lake.

Only we found that the price was a little expensive, $25 for adults to get into the preserve and $16 for children. The pedal boat was another $15.

A great place, or rather, a variety of great places to hike with friends. Absolutely lovely from any angle of approach.

By FrankRugg |

Go beyond the norm, beyond Undercliff climbers, mountain bike trails and seem out the labyrinths, Fox or Giants Workshop views. Take a Peterson guide with you, sketch pad or camera, stop by the preserve HQ for the best seasonal bird sighting spots, walk the Stairmaster from the HQ to Undercliff.......or simply scramble to the quiet highest points of Bonticou and watch the clouds. Walks and scrambles for kids to explore (within reason) and older family members as well. Dog friendly, people friendly, bring a bottle of water, a backpacked lunch, AND ALWAYS PACK OUT MORE THAN YOU PACK IN if you find something left by others less respectful of their surroundings.

By lmactravel |

Well marked trails, ample parking, informative visitors center with clean rest rooms. We did the Gertrude's Nose Trail which was very long but the views were spectacular.

Review for the Hiking Trails Day Pass:

I visited Mohonk (for lunch) a few years ago which included access to the Mountain House and the Trails in the surrounding area. I have since wanted to return for the hiking trails and to get some photos of the amazing vews surrounding the Mountain House. And...the best time to visit...is when the leaves change colors in the fall.

I purchased a hiking trail day-pass ($30 for adults, $25 children)...and it was a challenge... The passes are released 72 hours in advance....so if you wanted to get tickets for 10 AM on Sunday, they become available at 10 AM on the Thursday before the Sunday. And let me tell you....within a minute or two during the fall weekends, they are completely gone! I was surpised at how quickly they went...you may have to look into the weekday days if you are looking to get tickets for a larger group. Nonetheless, I was able to get a hiking day-pass for 10 AM this past Sunday.

I drove up from the Bronx (one hour and forty five minutes) to the hiking pass gate, gave them my name and showed my printed (or mobile) pass confirmation. I was given a trail map, a wrist bracelet and directed to park in the hiking trail parking lot which had a lot of spaces at that time (I think the earliest tickets are offered for 9 AM). There are some vending machines and bathrooms there as well.

Now the hike to the Mountain House area is 2.5 miles or so...which takes about 45-60 minutes for the average walker. The main path from the hiking pass parking lot to the Mountain House area is marked along the way with a little green house icon nailed into trees along the route. The hike back, is similarly marked with a red car icon along the route...while these are ingenious and very helpful, I wish the other route were also marked...at least with colored flags. There is a shortcut along the way; the fox path which is pretty strenuous and quite a workout but will save you about 15-20 minutes of walking...but that route wasn't well marked...except for some faint red paint on trees and rocks which have faded significantly...so be sure to keep referring to the hiking map...it comes in very handy. You may also want to download the .pdf map from Mohonk's website...that way you always have it on your phone and can zoom in if needed...

I suggest going to the Mountain House first and exploring that area. Day hikers are NOT allowed to access the house, only the surrounding trails. From there, you can take the trail up to the Sky Tower, or for those adventurous enough...take the Labyrinth path...which is essentiall a 45-minute obstacle course that connect the Mountiain House area with the Sky Top. Once at the Skytop, be sure to explore and ascend the tower (about 100 steps) for some spectacular views.

Had an amazing time and got some excellent photos. I highly suggest going in the fall...it may be a bit chilly, but dress in layers as I found myself removing and then putting back layers of clothing throughout my trip.

Bathrooms are near the mountain house so be sure to stop off there before you trek back to the parking lot...unless you want to wait another 45-60 minutes. 4

It didn't feel "crowded" despite being a sold-out fall Sunday...there is lots of space to distance...and most people were respectful of each other's space and time in certain target areas which are coveted for photos...

I understand the price is a bit much...(i.e. family of four would pay $110) given what is offered...which is my only gripe wth this experience. A $20/$15 price or discounted weekday rate may be more appropriate.

So awesome! The visitor’s center is a must see if you don’t want I hike. They also have lectures and a gift shop. Better go early during peak season. The parking lots hit capacity quickly so better get their early.

I love Mohonk Preserve. We traveled there in the Fall and stayed at the Mohonk Mountainhouse. We were able to bike on the rocks to the edge of them which offers amazing views. Very exhilirating!

By Bernadette B |

Worth the time and money, Carriage trail was a easy walk with great views but my favorite was the blue trail. We did about two thirds of it . There was more trails but we ran out of energy. Bring sun glasses sun screen hat bug spray and plenty of fluids

I have lived in New York a long time and until last week have only minimally heard of the Mohonk Preserve. Thus, when it was suggested to visit this area I shunned the request and begrudgingly went. Now all I can say is "Wow"! Situated several miles off a nondescript exit from the NY Thruway 1 1/2-2 hours from NYC rises this mystical place filled with limitless adventures. There is hiking, biking, rock climbing, bouldering, scrambling, and swimming just to name a few things all in an unbelievably organized, well maintained, and completely mapped out system. In addition, there are well marked easy trails, hard trails, and an abundance of off road trails all for the taking and all with unbelievable views. There were times when I really felt I was either out West or in a different country. In addition, there are natural waterfalls throughout the region which you can gaze at for hours. We were there for 3 full days, and each day was a completely different experience.

If that is not enough, the small towns surrounding the Preserve have the sophistication to some extent of a large city, with an abundance of restaurants, health food/organic stores, yoga centers, wineries, and art galleries. You could easily spend a long weekend or even a week and have a hard time being bored--weather independent. So if you are looking for fresh air instead of time square-- this, in my opinion, is by far one of the best places to visit in the Hudson Valley region.

This is a must when visiting - simply gorgeous. Yes they charge a fee but it is well worth it.
Look up the Lemon Squeeze and do the hike it your fit

By wxs2102 |

The best hike in this park to me is the Labyrinth/Lemon Squeeze - it is not so difficult that you need special training or gear, but challenging enough that you will be physically tired and mentally rewarded at the end of it. The trail starts on the lakeside trail opposite the house; there is a small sign marking the beginning of Labyrinth. You will navigate through tiny cracks, leap-needed gaps, and strategically placed ladders to navigate your way up the side of the mountain. The rocky path is clearly marked with red arrows and takes you to your final challenge, a vertical climb of some 150 feet up a tiny crevice (try to bring a slim backpack or nothing at all as it will make it easier to fit through); get through that and you will be rewarded with magnificent Cliffside views of the lake, forest, and towns in the distance. A short few steps later takes you to the lighthouse atop the mountain (though it is currently under construction).

Make sure you are physically fit to get through this hour-long adventure, go and enjoy!

(Entry fee is $27/person for day pass to the grounds; plan to go around 4PM in the afternoon if you want to avoid any crowds on this trail)

Great place for hikes! For all levels! Labyrinth and Lemon Squeeze were so much fun! Awesome pictures! Dinner was perfect with an amazing sunset! Very romantic for couples! Will for sure come back for more hikes and maybe for a stay in the house!

EXPENSIVE if you plan ti just walk through some carriage trails. Nice views of Craigs. Worth the money if you decide to hikie to Mohonk Mountain house grounds. Gardens are beautiful. Perhaps hike to sky tower. Neat adventure & challenging.

By C C |

The trails range from even surfaced roads to rock scrambles that take you through little caves and up rickety ladders through rock crevices. So much fun!!

By MdKal |

We visited the Mohonk Preserve on Friday May 19th. It's a beautiful wooden structure that suits their desire to preserve the beauty of the park. Inside, there is a cool video you can watch about the sprawling park and it's wildlife. They gave a large, touchscreen map where you can view sections if the preserve and the trails. The amount if trails & natural beauty is incredible.
Downstairs, there is a children's area and classroom. My children loved learning about the wildlife and especially learning about the rings inside of trees.
The staff was helpful in guiding us to easy trails our children would love and be able to accomplish. We'd definitely go back.

By K F |

The welcome center lives up to its name. Every time I have walked in I have been greeted with a smile, had any questions answered, and was given information and suggestions that were spot--on.
Trails are beautiful, well- maintained, and signs and markers make following them easy. All of tis enhances the outdoor experience. You can hike sections where there are people close by or walk a short distance to enjoy a solitary outing.
Rock climbing is very popular at the preserve but I did not participate in that activity.
I will go back for cross country skiing.

The weather was fantastic 70s Fahrenheit. Sunny. We arrived at the reserve 12:30pm. Most of the parking lots were filled. The park Rangers were excellent in offering assistance at finding a place to park. So I would recommend arriving earlier to get a better parking spot. We also went over to Mohonk House which is a private hotel, but they were filled up for Day hiking. Mohonk House have their own trails, but they also connect to the Mohonk Preserve. We experienced all types (hard to easy) trails. We saw people riding bikes on the easier trails. The area seemed popular for rock climbing also. The Rangers can supply you with a map of the trails. The entry fee was $12.00 per person.

By SLepine |

We hiked the area-and it was fantastic. Nice trails, well kept. We went to Lake Minnewaska and the falls. It was really a nice way to spend the morning.
We had gone to hike at Mohonk Mountain House and they wanted to charge us $27 a person!!! We didn't have over $100 on us to hike!! That was crazy. So she gave us directions to here and we paid $10 for the vehicle-not per person! Well worth it!

By Nick Z |

Lots of Nature less than two hours from NYC!!
Great choices of well marked Hiking trails through Oak, Pine & Hemlock forests - my favorite is the Millbrook Ridge Trail as it allows breathtaking views of the Hudson Valley Farmlands below. There are also world-class Rock Climbing cliffs and miles of Biking trails on well maintained Carriage roads throughout the Preserve. (the rangers provide you with Trail Maps at the parking lots) It's very popular in Foliage Season, so plan to arrive early! It'll be a Day Well Spent!!

Beautiful sightseeing ! Hiking, picnics you name it ......relaxing atmośphere ....no thanks good in winter trails ice up

By Mark Houghtaling |

we have been hiking at mohonk many, many times during our 15 years in the area, and only last month we discovered a new trail we had not explored before.

there is something for hikers and climbers and bikers of every level - from short nature walks to day-long adventures complete with rock scrambles. every trail we've been on has been beautifully maintained, and we have encountered some of the most breathtaking scenery and views in the area.

you can bring your dog on leash on most trails (a plus for us) - but check the terrain in advance. we've had to carry out little guy a couple of times. we don't have children, but there plenty of child-friendly options. bring a picnic and water if you think you'll need; i don't think there are any food concessions, and be sure to carry out what you carry in.

arrive early, as parking lots tend to fill up, especially on the popular trails. parking is free for members, but can be pricey for non-members, so check in advance. if you need guidance, stop by the visitors center, where the staff is friendly and knowledgable and will point you in right direction.

highly recommended!

By Allyson H |

We loved this place and the fall colors added to the experience. We hiked around the park for about 3hrs exploring.

By mom5fay |

We were unable to hike due to lack of time but the short drive we took up there and the walk to a beautiful waterfall was worth it in the lovely Fall weather. We would love to return and be able to explore this are more. The people at the visitor's center and parking areas were wonderful and welcoming!

An absolute gem for nature enthusiasts or those simply looking for a place to clear their minds from it all. Mohonk Preserve offers superb hiking in scenic and immaculately maintained trails. The Rock Scramble is one of my favorites, and the views from the top of the mountain are breathtaking.Highly recommended in any season.

By Andrea P |

This place is truly exquisite but you certainly pay a hefty price for beauty. The hike was not difficult and the view from the top of the fire tower was truly a sight to behold. We managed to find the magnificent gardens....well worth the search

By Gilbert M |

There are so many outdoor activities in this area. This is by far my favorite because you need nothing but your feet. I have hiked here numerous times and at different intensities. If you plan on driving there, get there early. It's super popular and it's not uncommon to pay and find no parking. You may have to walk far from where you park. And, please don't give the workers a hard time about parking or the full lots. They do they best they can and they are very strict rules about no parking on the roads. They have to be or the entire trail would be littered with cars parked on the side of the road. But, there are awesome trails, creeks and water falls. Sometimes I bike in, but if you plan on biking in the preserve there is an additional fee. Bring snacks and drinks and plan on carrying out your litter. Please, leave no trace.

By 967ModernArt |

The Mohonk preserve is an awesome place. Well maintained with great hikes and gorgeous views. However, if you are NOT a climber you may find that what the Mohonk Preserve offers is not as good as other destinations. For example, if you are not a climber you may enjoy Minnewaska state park even more than the Mohonk Preserve.

By Leslie M |

The hiking is excellent. A bit challenging if you are not a regular hiker. Rock scrambling available for those who looking for a challenge. Lots of pavilions to rest at, all with breathtaking scenery.

By wperruna |

Mohonk offers lots of trails, great views and you can bike, climb or swim. My favorite is Bonticu Crag which is off the spring farm trail head and is a rock scramble safe enough to do with kids that gives you beautiful views of the valley. It's great to go alone in the early morning and give yourself a mental break as well. Get there early as it can be very crowded. They have a parking fee or you can get a season pass on their website. Fall is the best time of year to visit to see the fall foliage.

By Bonnie G |

The preserve is the property, not the hotel. To visit the hotel grounds you’ll need to purchase a $25 day pass. Wait for Community Day.
The preserve views are magnificent, you’ll see both the Shawangunks and the Catskills. Easy paths to hike. Dog friendly. If you want, there are more challenging paths as well. This is true for the preserve, not the hotel, which does not allow dogs.

By Jing H |

Very nice hike on old minnewaska
Road it's shorter to go to the tower if you take the path road will be more fun ! The red arrow on the rock are very clear!

By JB |

We hiked the Millbrook Ridge Trail circuit a few weekends ago. (Great detailed directions and description on the NY NJ Trail Conference website.)

Luckily, we had day passes from our B&B, so we didn't have to pay the fee to enter the preserve. (Although we did have to go into the Visitor Center to exchange our passes for wristbands with the date marked on them.)

We had to park at the Visitor Center parking lot, since the West Trapps Trailhead parking lot was full (by 10:30am on Saturday). Because of this, we had to do the "Stairmaster" which is a series of rock stairs to get you up to the trailhead. You also walk along a dirt road where lots of rock climbers are - very interesting to watch.

I thought the trail itself was fairly strenuous at the beginning, but once you get up towards the top of the ridge it's a nice easy-to-moderate hike. The trail was really well maintained and the blazes were frequent and fresh.

We saw very few people except for when we reached the summit and there were a couple of groups. Overall it was very quiet and peaceful. The views are amazing and there are lots of them along the ridge.

By travelmama |

These are trails where you pay $15 per person to hike, and that also allows you a pass onto Mohonk Lodge trails. Alternatively, you can park at the lodge for $21 per person. In any case, the trails are extremely well-maintained and beautiful. We hiked for about 3 hours and sat out some rain in a look-out with spectacular views of the lake.

The Shawanagunks or better known as the Gunks is one of the best places for rock climbing on the east coast.

By Julie S |

We took a day and hiked the Lemon Squeeze. We received a map from the Mohonk Mountain House and went on our way. We had an AMAZING day and made lots of memories, but truthfully looking back, we are very surprised that they let us do this trail with our younger children. There were ties when we had to swing a child between the two of us because they were too small to get from rock to rock. It was very beautiful, but very physical and places that you really needed to be very careful! The end result was an amazing view! I was completely shocked after all that hiking that there is a simple path that led us back down to the mountain house! make sure you are in good shape and I would say on;y bring older children!

By InAYellowWood |

Well-tended park. Walks and hikes at a wide range of ability. Great for rock climbing--or just to watch the climbers. Spectacular views. Good places to spot birds of prey.

By 2touristsBangor_PA |

Everyone should visit Mohonk at least once in their life! We prefer to do it at least once a year. This place is our favorite and a sanctuary of peace and restorative tranquillity. It is not cheap, but most can afford to be a day visitor and enjoy at least one meal as a guest of Mohonk. You will be glad you did. It's like being transported back to a kinder and gentler time . . . you won't want to leave!

By Stephanieincincy |

We received free day passes to the Preserve from the proprietor of the Inn at Kettleboro where we were staying - bonus! We had only one day set aside for the Preserve, and it wasn't nearly enough, but we made the most of it with a hike up Bonticou Crag Trail, including the optional rock scramble, which was super fun. This hike is fairly strenuous, and the rock scramble isn't appropriate for very young children or pets. For folks who are afraid of heights, I would expect some of the exposure along this route to be intimidating, though doable. The views are definitely worth the effort. Wow. We also visited Split Rock (the site of the Endler Farm and Mill, located on a beautiful little creek) and the historic gatehouse to the Mohonk Mountain House, which sits at the end of a beautiful and quiet Oak Allee. The Split Rock site is just a few minutes' walk from a parking lot, and the gatehouse can be viewed from the car, though I suggest parking in the little lot at the other end of the Allee and enjoying the leisurely 15 or 20 minute stroll to see the gatehouse up close. It's currently undergoing some restoration work, but still worth a visit. The huge rocks cut to construct the gatehouse were really impressive up close.

I brought some business associates visiting from overseas here on a Sunday. The views are great, the service was excellent, the food was very good. There buffet was large with a lot of great options. I would have liked to have seen more foods that catered to people with food intolerances such as dairy, eggs and tapioca. However, there was still enough to choose from to make me happy and that is saying a lot since I am a tough critic! :) Great place to go for a family outing or a couple.

By Ralph |

Well maintained wide trails. You can walk to the hotel.
I had to pay 25 at the time of the hike. Which I will not do again.
i can walk anywhere a little cheaper.

By TwoTravelisseurs |

Mohonk Preserve has plenty to offer for a full day excursion trip from NYC - hiking, rock climbing, leisure walks around the lake, wildlife (if you are lucky enough). Hikes range from easy to moderate to difficult that you can pick from. There is hiking fee per person but parking is free so no complaints!I found the staff members to be is very friendly and helpful. They suggested good hikes for us and gave good directions.

PS: Please note that their Visitor Center and Bonticou hike trailhead are in opposite directions.

By Mfreck |

We went for a leisurely 4 mile walk on one of the carriage paths in the Preserve with beautiful vistas all around. Pleasantly surprised that there were a few bathroom facilities along the way. Not very busy except for the rock climbing groups but those we did encounter were very friendly. No dangerous species were met although the path was strewn with millipedes (walk carefully) would have said excellent if the price had been lower - $12 a person to get access to trails

By RealisticCuisine |

Overcliff/Undercliff has beautiful views on both sides, each one different.
Eagles, hawks - you are high in the trees so they seem close enough to touch!
Worth the trip!

So much to do in a beautiful setting! The day pass allows access to the entire property except a small private beach and includes a delicious meal! Since I did not stay on the property I cannot speak to the room quality but the 60.00 day pass is well worth it!!

By morningdove225 |

One of my very favorite places to come during the fall. Absolutely incredible views, and some of the best hikes I've ever been on.

By MARK C |

Mohonk Preserve has a ton of different trails to hike. There is a rock scramble and some cool swimming holes. A little pricey for a day pass but totally worth a yearly membership if you plan to go multiple times. A membership here does not include admission to the Mohonk Mountain House.

By robcurtross |

Daily passes or free if staying at the great resort.

Perhaps the best hike is to the memorial tower, but there are hundreds of miles of trails, all beautifully maintained.

By Patricia S |

Once you have witnessed the majestic views of the white cliffed mountains or the view from those mountains. The puffy clouds blowing by from above and the shadows they make as they cross the valley below. Awe inspiring and breath taking!!!

By Steve O |

Although there is a lot of rock climbing in the area we just stuck to hiking. Tons of great trails, some marked better than others, and gorgeous views. Definitely do a little research before hand and check in at the visitors center and you'll be good to go.

By ALAN W |

This place is expansive in the area it covers. It is set in the beautiful mountains. Sitting on a lake it offers boat rides. The hotel is an old classy hotel. Expensive ..... it even is expensive if you just want to tour the property & not stay at the hotel.
You have several places to see majestic views.

By jinxminx |

My daughter found this hike and it was a little confusing so maybe this will help.

First of all, it costs money - I'm used to paying $5 for access to a state park, but $22 per person (weekDAY price, I think it's $25 on weekends) to hike?? the reason for this is, there is the Mohonk Preserve, and then within it, there is the Mohonk Mountain House, which is a fancy historic resort. The Labyrinth hike, which includes Lemon Squeeze at the end, is on the Mountain House property. They allow access to hikers who aren't staying at the resort, but you have to pay. Now, if you want to access it more cheaply, you can go to the Mohonk Preserve Visitor's Center and pay the Preserve day pass fee - I can't remember what it is, $7? This increases your hike considerably though - you have to hike 4 miles in to get to the 1 mile Labyrinth hike, then 4 miles out. And those 4 miles are not flat. If you drive up to the resort (and it is up, just like you would be hiking), you pay the big fee but you only have to hike 1 mile to get to the 1 mile hike. Still not flat, but much shorter. We were on vacation so what the hell. Honestly, I think even were I local, I might opt to pay because the point of the hike is that it's a fun rock scramble. Do you really want to add 8 miles of woodsy, half uphill, hiking onto that?

Now, you will have to feel some class humiliation. You have to wear a red wristband and you're instructed to keep OUT of the resort and OFF the porches, so you won't get confused with the fancy guests.

The hike is super cool. It's basically like a mountain tumbled down and you're climbing around in it. HUGE rocks to scramble over, and at the end the Lemon Squeeze is a wooden ladder up a vertical tunnel. Be careful not to break your ankle! At the end there is a beautiful vista across the Shawangunk Ridge with the Mountain House down below. There is also a tower - a memorial to some guy who must have really been inspiring for them to build this nice solid tower to him up here in the mountains - that you can go up at the end as well.

The hike was well blazed - necessary, you wouldn't want to be figuring out the route through all these rocks. The rock scramble was easier than hiking up through the woods - or at least fun and varied enough that it felt easier. You're going to want to be confident about your scrambling abilities, you probably don't want to be claustrophobic, and this is not one for the very small children. We saw a couple with a young daughter, probably three, and they had stopped near the end - her father hiked ahead and saw she wasn't going to be able to make it and was not too pleased with her mother for not thinking it through better.

So, yes, it's pricey, but it's like going to the movies. Sure, you can watch stuff at home for free, but sometimes it's nice to go to the theater. You can hike for free, but sometimes it's nice to pay and do a really original hike. It's definitely different. Fun to do, a cool environment to be in, and gorgeous views.

incredible preserve! so much vast and glorious wilderness, and the swimming hole at split rock is unmissable.

By Rachel R |

There are miles and miles of hiking trails here- with stunning views! We parked at the gatehouse and hiked to the sky tower. There are many scenic overlooks. It is one of my favorite hikes. The only downside is the high cost ($52 for two adults on a Saturday).

By ssobansk |

The hike was exhilarating- do the lemon squeeze at the base! Hotel was so cool and the view from the top was the best I've ever seen.

By moogul818 |

Set course for the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Centre about 8 miles out from New Paltz. Taxi service is available. The Visitor Centre has parking, washrooms, snacks on payment, memorabilia for sale and some great audio-visual aid to introduce you and your kids to the flora and fauna of the Preserve. The place offers several trails for trekking and rock climbing, they require a membership or a $15 day pass. There are couple of short free trails running from the Visitor Centre which would give you a feel of nature. There is also a paid camping site and a small camping area for children, called the 'Children's Forest'.
The Preserve is worth a visit,

Great mountain for easy hikes or walks. Had two young ones with us and they had a ball walking the trails with some random inclines once in a while. Very peaceful. Nice grounds.

By Bethany R |

Mohonk is a wonderful time! My family and I enjoyed a 5 mile walk/hike throughout the preserve and we witnessed beautiful foliage, and views! There are hikes for all level of hikers and those just needing a good walk. It was also really cool to see the rock climbers climbing the Gunks!

By XSki007 |

We had fun on a sunny afternoon walking around the hills and dales. Amazing wild flowers and lots of very large sunflowers.

A great place to take pics and view nature!

Stayed in beautiful B&B, devoted time to running through the Gunks, with great trails and beautiful views

We go to Mohonk every other fall. We love the hikes, the views, the rock scrambles, the tower, the gardens, the gazebos. Worth the $22 price on a weekday. We had many trails to ourselves for a long time as not crowded. It's like your own woodland paradise. Recommend going during the week. If you go on a weekend get there by 9:30. We love finding the Yeaple Cabin (see the map there) but it's sad you can't access it anymore. 20 years ago you could go inside and a few years ago it was locked but you could still look inside thru the windows - no longer. What a piece of history! Built in 1770s, it housed 11 kids in this 1 room cabin with a loft (I researched). Inside, is cool hand hewn furniture built from the woods. There is a stone fireplace and a ladder to the loft. So glad I took photos years ago! I so wish the Mohonk estate would fund refinishing this and allowing travelers in to tour it, even if only one day a week. What a treasure! It's also sad the picnic lodge is not open anymore and offering lunch. Recommend picking up delish hefty sandwiches at The Bakery in town beforehand (and some cookies too!) and packing in a cooler bag. Bring lots of water. Be sure to take breaks between hikes. We've seen several porcupines! Sitting and gazing out from the many gazebos is a perfect relaxing time. And good spots for lunch too! Don't forget to wander the gardens and stop in the Barn Museum. You could spend a good hour there roaming around and looking at all the nostalgia from 150 years from Mohonk including old signs, buggies, elevators, etc. We never get tired of Mohonk.

I have been clombing here for years provides world class climbing aloend with stellar hikes and beautiful views.

By RoadLessTravelledNJ |

For those of us that are less athletic and hike-oriented, there is a beautiful sensory trail with paved level path, and sculpture lined trail. The views of the mountains are breathtaking. For the more adventurous of the group, there are many other more difficult paths, but I am grateful that the Mohonk Preserve is suitable for everyone.

By beaches402016 |

Outstanding views looking down at the mountain tops. You can hike down and also rock climb. Views are break taking

By Justine2Wheels |

My boyfriend decided to surprise me with a day trip of hiking. He knows how much I enjoy it and hadnt been up here in years so he packed up some lunches and we got in the car and drove up from North Jersey. The drive in itself is beautiful but we were thrown off when we realized the old entrance was now closed off and you had to go around past the Mohunk House to get to a gate where we were told it was $12.00 per hiker. A bit extreme as most places charge by the car. Id come back but maybe park along the road next time.

By Jonathan L |

Rewarding hikes on smooth and gentle carriage roads with exceptional views of lakes, valleys and distant mountains.

By marty344 |

I was all ready at least four times in the past two years at mohonk preserve and I can tell you that I am thinking to go more it's so gorgeous the rocks the hiking and most of all is the sun set

By Verovee |

This preserve has all types of trails for hikers, bikers and climbers. We took an easy fall hike. The trail was well maintained, the rangers were friendly and helpful and the views were lovely.

By bkorabel |

What a great place to just pack a picnic lunch and slowly savor the bites while taking in beauty of the landscape. Just way too much to see in a day. You will surely be going back and will always be amazed by the view.

By Sean B |

This place is easily one of the best places for so many things. It has some of the best traditional rock climbing in the world. Great hiking trails with various levels of difficulty. The preserve is very well maintained and the staff are fantastic!

By MonarchMomof2 |

Our family parked at the Visitors Center to get a map, pay our $15 fee for a wrist band (supports the preserve), and opted for an 8.2 mile (round trip) hike from the center to Sky Top Tower. The scenery and lake around Mohonk Mountain House are absolutely beautiful! My husband and kids did the Labyrinth rock scramble and Lemon Squeeze, a challenging, fun 300 foot ascent that involved boulder climbing and scaling steep ladders. They said it was a blast. I opted to walk up the steep, easier walking path. Sky Top Tower was cool and the views were beautiful. For those staying at Mohonk Mountain House, the trail is just a short climb to the top. Some people opt to park at MMH to take the shorter trail. The cost of parking at the resort ranges from $21-$26 per person (yes, this includes children) with a fee of $55 for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children) on weekdays and $70 for the same on weekends. If you love to hike, start at the visitors center, support the preserve, and enjoy the beautiful views.

There are many other beautiful hikes on the preserve that we will come back to do. Highly recommend!

By skenespanol |

Stop by the visitors center -- for maps and the employees will suggest hikes tailored to your ability and interests

By Deborah F |

It is gorgeous this weekend - almost peak foliage. The Shawgunks are here year round though. And this is a climbers paradise. Costs $10 per person and parking is limited, but it is worth it. If you are entering at Peter's Kill, get here close to the 9am start or you might not get in at all!

By AvidHiker33 |

This is more of a 3.5 star than a 3 star. Good place to hike the lemon squeeze, to me their highlight of the area. What I dont like is the $12 per person fee just to hike the area.

Hiking should always be free in my mind, it promotes a healthy lifestyle and although this area is private property, the pricing is pretty outrageous. To me a per car fee would be a lot more understandable than a per hiker fee.

Leading up to the Lemon Squeeze is very easy and like a walk in the park. You get to the see their lodge and their beautiful lake.

The Lemon Squeeze isnt open year round and closes a lot due to wet conditions and icing, so definitely check that before heading there as it can get pretty dangerous otherwise.

By LER26 |

The Mohonk Preserve offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and X-C skiing. Miles of carriage roads and trails, and good locations for nature photography. Occasional visitors will opt to pay the day use fee, but the annual membership is a bargain for more frequent users.

By Anthony S |

The view at the preserve is as beautiful as the pictures online. Definitely worth the trip to check out

By nyprof2001 |

The Shawangunk Ridge is spectacular. Mohonk Preserve is New York States largest member and visitor supported nature preserve. Be sure to stop at the Visitor Center for maps, suggested hikes, with ideas from friendly staff.

By deeter123 |

We have been coming here for years. Between the biking, hiking and rock climbing your family should have a fun time. The rock climbing is great, we have used Mountain Skills Climbing Guides. Doug and his staff are great! Be sure to end your day will a swim at split rock.

By Leni J |

We went for our anniversary and had the couples massage. We took the tour of Mohonk House, very interesting history! And then had a small picnic on one of the many chairs over looking the lake.

By Chabrro |

Head for the visitor center for free maps and excellent area advice. The center itselfis a beautiful building and the staff is very friendly, helpful and informed. Nearby there is a great swimming hole called Split Rock, from which you can take several easy and beutiful hikes on the very well- maintained forest trails. Bring lunch, water, bathing suit and towel. Parking lot does fill up early. Can spend the day just at Split Rock and swim and enjoy the water falls or hike too. We saw a few water snakes on the rocks. Will be back.

By kittyhdh |

I can imagine what the park is like. I'm sure its beautiful. Drove almost four hours, got there around 10:30 AM and got told that the park was at capacity for the day and that they weren't giving out anymore passes for the rest of the ENTIRE day and to come back another DAY.....not time....or in a few hours....or try back...just another day. I asked about buying passes in advance....nope, they don't do that...so how is one supposed to know if its worth the four hour drive or not. Disappointed.

By TravelNat8 |

Huge Preserve, home to the Mohonk Mountain house, with lots of great hiking trails. Do the hike on it's own (paid), or come to the Mountain house for a spa service and use the hiking trails prior!

By Dora C |

If you like hiking ,rock climbing or mountain biking this is the place for you. The rock formation are very beautiful. It has path from easy to very difficult so you can choose. The only down side is the cost which is per person.

By Seaside144131 |

By ddallas1969 |

Some of the best rock scrambles on the East Coast are right here! We did almost all of them and had the time of our lives! If you like a challenging scramble, then you MUST hike at Mohonk. It was dangerous, exciting, and amazing!

By RICART75 |

We stopped in our way to Hyde Park, and our 10 day exploration of the Hudson River Valley.
The Center is nicely arranged, well maintained, and offers a great orientation to the Preserve; as well as the surrounding area. And, the restrooms were clean and accessible.
The staff person was welcoming and informative.
This location offers a great starting point, if one is wanting to learn about/experience the Preserve; or just wants a better appreciation of the surroundings through which they are passing.

We recently chose to spend an entire good weather day at the Mohonk Preserve. Bought a delicious sandwich to picnic with at a deli just a few miles before the Preserve entrance. We were able to do 3 hikes, one long, other 2 shorter and all very different but having good views, interesting plants, and some birds to watch along the way. Gorgeous place, wish had more time to explore.

By Steve O |

Miles and miles of amazing trails to hike for people of all levels. Good for families, individuals, avid hikers, pretty much anyone. You can spend a few hours or a few days hiking the trails here and will enjoy every minute of it.

By Gail R |

Loive Mohonk, its like a hidden gem only about an hour and a half from NYC. The beauty of the park is exceptional and it is something to be seen. We go every year in the fall and the colors are amazing.

By Shewanzy |

Can I give less than 1 star? If you're a hotel guest you might have a different experience, but if you're a day guest, expect to be treated poorly. A member of our group had an old knee injury that they made worse while hiking up the trail.

When we arrived at the mountain house we asked if some of us go get the car and drive it back up to pick the injured person up-- they refused. We asked if we could call and Uber or taxi-- obviously the answer was also "no". They finally said that their security guards would drive them back down to the gate but that the rest of us would have to hike down. But this is where it gets interesting.

While we hiked back down the path, they took our friend to a private room where they drilled them about their MEDICAL HISTORY, including asking them what medications they were on, among other private things. This is a VIOLATION of HIPPA laws!!!

Mohonk's procedures are DEPLORABLE and their treatment of day guests is way below second rate. . I have been hiking there since I was a kid, and the views are spectacular, so I don't want them to suffer or go out of business or anything like that, but I hope someone from the company takes this post seriously, so that they can change their policies and their procedures change.

Best place to go for Guided rock climbing trip! I'd recommend trying out the Ems climbing school for a great adventure.

By Karen S |

Can't say enough of the wonderful hiking and biking at the mohonk preserve. Views are great. Trails are usually well marked, but you should always carry the preserve map with you. Great for any season. Cross country sking and snow shoeing.

By Metira C |

We did the small trail called Millbrook Ridge. We stop by at visitor center to get some info first and then drive 5 mins to another parking lot to pay the entrance fee $12 per person and walk up to the trails. On the way go, we walk on the main Trapps road first then make a left turn to enter the trail back to exit to avoid confusion how to get out from the woods.
The view is breathtaking. I went on November the 7th. It's past peak already but the view still beautiful and can still see colors. Not too bad for past fall foliage. If you wanna see the colors peak, go late October.

By donna2468 |

Great hiking, great views, nice ambiance. Wonderful to be away in the mountains enjoying nature. Well marked, good map for hiking. Resort is beautiful. Makes you really appreciate your surroundings. Parking is a bit on the expensive side for a day pass type setup.

By BrooklynKitKat |

I just spent the past two days hiking in Mohonk Preserve and I can't wait to go back!

I did the Bonticou Crag hike, (the Spring Farm Trailhead) which has an awesome rock scramble leading up to incredible views from the enormous rock ridge at the top. Too pretty to leave! A great place to have a snack, watch birds, and soak in the sun. It's only a little over 3 miles - a quick hike, although there are plenty of trails throughout this area to keep you busy. Afterwards a drive to the Coxing Trail head for a dip in the swimming hole was the perfect ending to a great day.

Today I hiked the Milbrook Ridge Loop from the West Trapps entrance - about 7 miles of utter beauty. AMAZING views, for about 2 hours straight. First half is uphill and rocky and totally gorgeous.

Trails are well marked, the map is accurate and easy to read, and every employee at the entrances was friendly, enthusiastic, generous, and wonderfully helpful in assisting me with picking a hike.

I'm ready to buy a membership and go back - can't imagine ever getting tired of this place.

By Pyrodad88 |

Went to hike. Drove a couple hours to get there. Shame on me for not checking first, but they charged me an outrageous $26.00 per person to hike around the trails. $52.00 fo the two of us to hike around the area. Insane, and dissapointing. I pay that for an entrance fee to a water park or theme park not to walk around in the woods. I drove all that way so I paid however and unfortunately, I wont be returning.

By Bertsy K |

A beautiful natural place, a must for an avid hiker or outdoor enthusiast. Admission is $12, which is a little steep, but kids under 12 are free.

By Tom B |

After being turned away from the Mohonk House, we were still looking for a way to enjoy the area. This was close by so we decided to go. The drive there is beautiful with great scenery. Lots of walking and hiking trails, some easy, some difficult. Nice and peaceful with great views.

By natcpl |

The gunks is a fabulous gem of a climbing area. It is close to NYC and has countless routes to climb that are easily accessible. Most routes there are trad with the occasional bolt and anchor. Most descents are walk offs. With the recent addition of the AAC campground, its even more convenient. Whether you are climbing novices or pushing the boundaries of 5.14 trad there are great climbs there. Near the trapps climbing area is also a less publicized skinny dipping and nude trail called coxing kill. Its nice to go for a cooling skinny dip after a long day of summer climbing.

By KDluvs2Travel |

Literally! The Nature Conservancy rated this 12,000 acre intact skylake eco-system as "One of the 10 Great Places on Earth." The Towns of New Paltz and Gardiner abound with wonderful B&Bs and restaurants so plan to stay locally for a few days and see all that this wonderful Preserve has to offer. The staff and volunteers will be glad to personalize your experience for you.

By Carson |

One of my favorite places to hike within 90 minutes of NYC.
Awesome number of rock scrambles and a mix of trails for hikers, and carriage trails for non-hikers.
Some short vertical or almost vertical non-technical rock scrambles. If you know someone who is familiar with area they can even show you where there are some boulder caves.
Lots of wild blueberries and huckleberries in July.
Biking is another very popular recreation there because of the wide flat carriage trails.

The park use fee is about ~$10 per person which has rock scrambles and challenges for hikers as well as carriage trails for non hikers. This property likewise butts up with Mohonk Resort property where the fabled Labyrinth, Skytop and Mohonk Mountain House are located; this is where Anthony Hoppins and Matthew Broderick filmed "The Road to Wellville".

Only 15 - 20 minutes from the town of New Paltz, so you can stop by one of the many food places nearby, often with chefs coming from the CIA. No not the Central Intelligence Agency, but Culinary Institute of America over in Hyde Park, NY just on other side of the Hudson River.

By A A |

Awesome view on leaves, so many colours... Easy access to the preserve. Rude a car to see also other places near by.

By scot f |

Second visit to the preserve with my family. Our visit was greatly improved by first stopping at the visitor center.

Told the volunteer, Roland, what we were looking for and he planned a perfect day for us.

Mohonk has hiking, biking and technical rock climbing. We were just interested in a day hike.

Most of the walk was near, or at grade on old carriage trails now covered with gravel. Note, that getting to and from the carriage trails is a steep and rocky one. We found it fun, but I wouldn't recommend for those with a health condition.

He also recommended a visit to the mohonk mountain house grounds. Note that while Mohonk Preserve is very friendly to pets on leashes, the owners of the mountain house does NOT allow pets.

The mountain house is large and beautiful. On a large lake. The lake and surrounding cliffs are surrounded by little covered benches. Looks a scene in the game of Myst. The trip culminates to the top of the cliff where there is a tower with splendid views of the valley below.

For the adventurous, there is an alternate route to the top called the labyrinth trail. It is incredibly fun as you challenged to go over and under boulders, use crazy ladders and bridges without getting too lost. You need to be in good shape and wouldn't recommend for kids 8 or under. My wife passed after the first 20 yards.

We did 8 miles round trip and it took 5 hours with a stop for lunch and much picture taking.

Keep in mind the preserve is not a government park and there is a 20 entrance fee. Even if you enter from the adjoining state park (also very nice). If you decide to go from the preserve to the state park no additional charges are incurred

By CWald28 |

Thousands of acres. Beautiful fall foliage. Endless trails. Beautiful views. Stunning views of lake Mohonk. Lake up your hiking boots, grab your water bottle and go.

By Tina L |

Just did the Labyrinth and Lemon Squeeze with my just-turned 4 daughter and 7.5 year old son. They both loved it so much. My kids are active and love climbing. There are areas where you have to help out the little one but with a little hand holding, she had no problem and enjoyed it more than the hike up itself. We think it is fun and moderately challenging (5 out of 10). Definitely coming back again soon. Great family event. And I would stay off property as the mountain house is not worth the big $$. Wear proper shoes with good grip as you can twist your ankle if you’re prone to that.

By hmh717 |

I went here with a few friends this weekend. The hike to the labyrinth is not challenging. The labyrinth and lemon squeeze was very difficult for my friend. I didn't think it was too bad. Wear shoes with decent traction and watch your footing. The views are nice, especially from the tower. It is $15 per person to enter from the preserve side. Plan a day and just do it.

By roadfiddler |

My favorite place for a day hike for the last 50 years. You will not be disappointed.
All the comments that are complaining about a $30 day fee are mistaking the Mohonk Mountain House resort for the Mohonk Preserve. The day fee for the Preserve is much less ($15), and Ulster County residents can get free day passes at local libraries. Also, twice a year in spring and fall, Ulster County residents can obtain free 1-month passes.

By leprof2015 |

We went to the Mohonk Preserve to swim. There's a waterfall and the water goes down between two small cliffs, hence the name Split rock, into a shallow pond. It is surrounded by trees and looks very picturesque. There are a number of large, flat rocks you can spread out your blanket or towels and picnic. It wasn't very crowded and it was a lot of fun. The water was super cold and every new arrival was encouraged by everyone else to "just jump in, it's great once you're in"! And it was. Highly recommended.

By Leah Z |

This was a treat...hiking Mohonk Preserve during peak fall foliage.
I especially enjoyed walking 'under-cliff' road which allowed me to watch the climbers.
Note - parking at Mohonk House is $26, parking at Mohonk Preserve is $12, and there is a reciprocity agreement by which those coming on foot from the preserve are welcome to Mohonk House.
Since I was going to hike anyway, I parked at the preserve and walked to Mohonk House, sat at the lake and watched the boaters.
Walked back via the 'scenic route' (okay I got lost).
Special, special day!

By joylama |

Upstate NY has many beautifully scenic settings and the Mohonk Preserve and the property of the adjacent Mohonk Mountain House fit that profile. Great hiking for all skill levels and many other activities in the area.

By iberjan |

Super worthwhile preserve with plenty of nice trails and some very pretty scenery. The old carriage trails are great for riding of all kinds.

By alanzara |

Great hiking trails, phenomenal views. We've hiked both in summer and on specific trails in the winter (snowshoeing) and both experiences were wonderful. It's really buggy in the summer - bring a lot of bug spray!

By Steve W |

Mohonk Preserve has 85 miles of trails. $22 admission, if no membership, and parking is about a mile or more from the Mohonk Mountain House. Neither the admission nor the membership includes admission to the Mohonk Mountain House. The fall colors make this even more scenic. I was there in the first week of October and I was a week or 2 early for the fall color changes. Some trails are easy and some difficult, with walking, running, biking available on many trails and carriage roads. A beautiful area.

By Don H |

Absolutely one of the most fabulous scenic places in the country. I've been rock climbing there since the late 1970s and have learned about many special locations. Lots of hiking, swimming, mountain biking, xc skiing, lodging and general adventuring.
You can purchase a day pass for hiking or climbing at the parking lots. You can travel farther
There are orchards, a rail trail for hiking/biking, wineries and even a skydiving school nearby.
Travel west on 299 from town, cross the river and turn right onto Mtn Rest Rd to go to the Mohonk Mtn House Hotel. Or continue west on 299 to 44/55 and turn north, hard left around the hairpin turn, then park on the right after the steel bridge (for climbing/hiking). Continue west to the Peter's Kill area for climbing and hiking. Continue west to Lake Minnewaska State Park for hiking, XC skiing, mtn biking, swimming at Lake Minnewaska or Lake Awosting. Beautiful views while hiking, biking, skiing.

By Robert W |

An Labor Day walk to Lake Awosting for a swim. It served as a reawakening to the beauties of the Hudson Valley and Mohonk in particular. Quiet after about 1/4 mile in to the park and the long walk to the lake which when reached requires more hiking to get to the swimming area. The tranquil scenery the fresh air the colors of the late summer season made for meditation on the natural world. There are many bikers who swiftly pass, geared up, mostly absorbed by their exercise. The lake did not allow swimming until 11am. It was worth the walk and the wait. The water is pristine invigorating and being a salt water swimmer requiring more effort to stay afloat. After a swim and change I felt as if I had become less alien, more attuned to the surrounding environment. It was a happy sojourn, a pleasant day's outing.

By savedays |

We and our friends had been avid climbers many years ago. The knees can't do it anymore, but we wanted to return for the walking exercise and the shear beauty. When it was time to cool off, we were very surprised and disappointed that dogs are no longer allowed to swim at the beautiful Coxing Kill (sp?) swimming hole. We were pointed to an area to the right where dogs are allowed. It's a rocky stream about 3-4" deep. We saw a guy with a large plastic glass trying to cool his dog off by pouring water over it and our hearts fell. Our dog went in a few feet and got her paws cooled off, but the rocks are very slippery and she was having trouble moving around. Such a shame. I remember watching one amazing dog jumping into the "gulch" and many others swimming at the "hole." Everyone picked up after their dogs - I never saw a doggie mess anywhere. Liability issue? Whatever - don't take your dog with you and expect that it will experience the joy of cooling off in one of the best swimming holes ever.

Actually visited to go rock climbing nearby but at the end of our climbs we had some daylight left to spare so we took a stroll for about 2 hours. Beautiful landscaping and though not lucky to have any wildlife sightings I’m sure it’s even more beautiful in the fullness of Spring.

This was an incredible place. We only got to do a rock scramble and some hiking but WELL worth the cost! We will be getting the annual pass and coming back for sure!

By Chris B |

Mohonk has a wide variety of hikes to do. You have to pay a small fee to access the area, but it's worth it for the variety you get. (More options than nearby Minnewaska) We started at the visitors centre and hiked from there. A wide variety of scenery and the awesome rock scramble (Labyrinth and Lemon Squeeze) to the top where the views are amazing.
We got some food from the cafeteria at Mohonk Mountain House, but they don't have a great variety - so come prepared.

This is our third visit to split rock and it has encouraged us to obtain a yearly membership. The environment is beyond beautiful, it is entrancing, You will shed your stress within minutes and the "regulars" at split rock are very friendly, welcoming, warm people. The water is crystal clear and although cold, it is the most refreshing and enlivening experience, a day in the sun at split rock is truly one of the wonders of nature.

We spent the Labor Day weekend 2016 in the Catskills and this was our first stop, great hiking place, beautiful scenery,we'll be back in the future!

By Albert F |

What else can I say but the place is spectacular. The hiking trails go from easy to hard and some are loose gravel walkways. We ended at the Skytop Tower which was unbelievable. Learn the history and the environment of the Preserve. They have volunteers that take care of the Preserve and log in 9000 hours each year. They have picnic areas, boating, carriage rides, playground, pavilion and more. It is beautiful and has amazing views of the Hudson Valley. We will go back again later in the year to see the full effect if the foliage, flowers, trees, birds, etc.

We had decided to come here last minute and do a quick hike since we have never been here. We parked at the Mohonk Preserve and headed to pay the $12 pp. We decided to do the Labyrinth/ Lemon squeeze. The man at the desk said it would take an hour and a half. It took us close to 5 hours and over 16 miles. The labyrinth is scary at times. I would not recommend this to those who are faint at heart or scared of heights. The views were ok. The tower is closed for construction at this time. We also wandered over to the Mohonk House. This was a place that i've always been interested in staying. However, because of this hike and my short walk around, i know it is not on my list of destinations now (way too many kids).

A very scenic setting, just a short drive from New Paltz. We visited on a rainy, foggy day, so views were limited. There’s a
very nice visitors center, which serves as the starting point for some leisurely nature trails.

By Ghidrah |

Mohonk Preserve offers an array of trails (60+ miles according to the brochure I was given at the visitor center) tucked into the Hudson Valley mountains overlooking New Paltz and surrounding hamlets.

The location of the visitor’s center is quiet and peaceful. We chose the “Undercliff & Overcliff Carriage Road” hike, which is a 5-mile-long, flat, looping path that takes hikers past cliffs, scenic vistas, and a variety of flora and occasional fauna. Yes, as many reviewers note, it’s an easy and wide trail. This is clearly stated in the literature. There are more difficult trails at the preserve, also clearly stated in the literature. If you want to make this hike more challenging, follow the connector shortcut from the visitor’s center that takes you up some rather steep and borderline-treacherous rock steps to get to the loop.

The beauty of this trail to me is the juxtaposition of big and small. You see big cliffs and big vistas and massive slabs of rock, but you also see the little things that make nature fascinating: the way the plant life changes as you take the bend from the undercliff to the overcliff side; the evolving variety of mosses and lichens that occur at different elevations; the damp area swarming with orange salamanders; the bird and frog calls ringing out from tree clusters and swampy sections. We went on a misty, foggy weekday morning and were treated to a most serene nature experience.

My tip for the people who run Mohonk Preserve is to provide more clarity about finding other trail heads. The maps shows dozens of trails, but the website only tells you how to get to a few of them. I’m sure the visitor center staff could inform upon arrival, but I like to plan ahead.

Yes it's a wonderful place to watch sunset you need about one and half hour from the beginning sunset to dark sky with full with stars after 35 minutes of sunset you cam already see the big dipper

I was on a short trip here (Mohonk Mountain House) and I used the opportunity to run/hike and bike in the forest here. Very nice, and lots of photo opportunities. Recommended!

By Paul B |

The hikes are very nice in the amenities are well clean and hospitable. Everyone seems to be a friendly who I ran into an there is not much chance of getting lost as maps are available.

By joe r |

okay we did a day pass with dinner here - okay about $80 per person but since a plain hiking pass is $25 we figured it was worth it to stay and have the whole experience there (except the sleep part) - we did as much as possible house tour (ok) - garden tour (vg) - 3 different short hikes - canoe (extra $) - cookies and tea on the porch - greenhouse - and then dinner which was a little disappointing (being a vegetarian - it lacked choices - the only pasta was mac & cheese for the kids) - all in all though we had a wonderful day here and figured it was something you should do once if you can afford it

By Emilys |

Do not miss this opportunity to go for an amazing hike. The countless trails are so well laid out and you get to experience some truly beautiful spots. The Skytop tower is amazing the views are spectacular.

By KimGrimes |

Now this part of Mohonk, we loved! Come for the hiking....don't stay in the hotel! Enjoy the outdoors, and the spa, stay away from everything else Mohonk has to offer.

By happytrailsnyc |

We hiked the Undercliff Road around Shawangunk and back up the other side on Overcliff Road - about an hour and half for almost 5 miles. We encountered wide vistas and overhangs along this beautifully maintained trail, words do no justice to what you will see here.

Make sure you bring water and wear comfortable shoes - you don't need anything else really for the easy Overcliff/Undercliff hike, except a camera to capture what you will see. Worth a visit and the $12 per person to enter this pristine preserve.

By Cathy M |

Our first stop was the visitor's center where there was a short film that explained about the preserve - how big it is and how there is so much nature to enjoy. We only went on the trails that were free but that gave us an opportunity to see what the preserve has to offer. The views were gorgeous. Spend some time here to get away from the everyday craziness and just relax. It really is a beautiful place.

By rentfor2 |

natural beauty and old world charm. if your looking for nature and rock climbing, just a short drive far from New Paltz, you won't be disappointed.

By Frank N |

A top the Mohonk Lighthouse you can see 5 connecting states and the landscape views are insanely beautiful.

By Roger S |

The Mohonk Preserve is one of the really special places in the United States. The many carriage trails afford easy access to some spectacular scenery. But if you want some challenging climbs, those are available, too. If you can, also visit the Mohonk Mountain house. Unfortunately, the hotel is not completely accommodating to visitors from the Mohonk Preserve, to which they owe much. However, the Preserve itself is wonderful. It has a great museum and many programs for the community. I myself have been visiting the Mohonk Preserve for about 50 years.

By Lisa P |

My husband and I just returned from a long weekend in New Paltz and we spent one day hiking the trails at the Mohonk Reserve. We chose a moderate intensity trail (there are many trail options ranging from easy to hard) and were able to climb to the top of the Shawangunk Ridge where the views were amazing!! There were hawks actually flying below us!! There were many people rock climbing and biking at the Reserve as well. It is a beautiful place to be outside and connect with nature. I highly recommend the Mohonk Reserve and we will be returning very soon!

By Amf |

Excellent hike! Beautiful views. Not too difficult to reach the summit even if you're out of shape. Many places to rest. Great location for picnic lunch. I got engaged at the top a few years ago!

By UrbanMonkey48 |

Aside from the Mohonk Mountain House hotel itself, you can visit as a day guest, pay a fee and enjoy miles of hiking or cross country skiing on beautidul trails that go through the woods and/or cliffs. The scenic biews are spectacular.

By Justin M |

I'm sure the Mountain House and grounds are nice, but I tend to go the opposite way of the crowds. My favorite area of the preserve is the Millbrook Mt trail - the trail that follows the very edge of the Shawangunk ridge all the way to the Minnewaska property line. Great views of the HV for almost the entire trail. For locals, the free month pass in the spring and fall are awesome as most of us don't want to pay ~$9 just to hike for a few hours.

By Rosa F |

This was a great scramble over large boulders and through some small spaces.
Fairly easy for the most part if your sure footed and semi fit.
The 'lemon squeeze' right before the top is a squeeze indeed! Definitely needed to remove my bag and wedge myself in parts to get through and up. I cant imagine how if your not slender you would fit.
Its dark and wet and totally worth every second.
Keep an eye out for the fading red markers for the route,I can be tricky if your not paying attention.
The cool rocks and caves are a nice break from the sun on a hot day.
Something different from your average hike with the beautiful view at the top.
Great for group team building too.
Loved it!
So much fun

We really enjoyed Mohonk Preserve and highly recommend it! We spent all day here. We did the Bonticou Crag Hike and the majority of Table Rocks as well as another field trail. The whole trip we had magnificent views of the Gunks and it was so peaceful and quiet. We were surprised at how strenuous the hikes were (and we're avid hikers). Table Rocks especially got a little too scary for us, as we were the only ones that we had seen in miles/hours. Talk to the workers at the parking lots if you want recommendations. They were able to help us figure out a way to get around to the top of Boticou Crag without rock climbing up the face of a cliff. We had hiked the day beforehand and were fairly sore for some types of hikes that day. We also went down later to the Split Rock swimming hole. It was too cold to swim, but it was a nice scenic walk and the hole was really clear and relaxing. I absolutely loved our visit and hope to return! I wish Mohonk would do a special weekend pass so that people coming up for the weekend in the summer, spring, or fall to hike could return and get a discounted rate. I think they'd probably sell more passes! They have memberships, but those aren't really worth if for someone who might come up one weekend a year at most.

By Douglas N |

Have been going to the preserve for over 30 years. Well maintained and great for day hiking or biking in the summer and we use it for cross country skiing in the winter. One of the best places in the Hudson Valley to get outdoors and enjoy nature.

By Uphototraveler |

This is such a gorgeous area, I never get tired of going. Fabulous for hiking, relaxing, and enjoying nature.

The Mohonk Preserve is one of the premiere Preserves in the United States. The visitor center is informative and fun for all ages. The recreational opportunities from hiking to biking to climbing to rock scrambling are world class.

By foxtango15 |

This is a beautiful place to go with a great launch! There's a golf course down the road that is very wonderful to play on. This is a beautiful seasonal area spring summer and fall are all just gorgeous. Bring the family bring your friends bring a special friend and have a great time!

By varun p |

We drove about 2 hr's to Mohank Preserve Visitor Center and there is $15 fee per person to hike the trails. Hiking from Mohank Visitor center to Mohank lake & Mohank house (via Under Cliff and Old Minnewaska rd) took about 1 hr 30 min and another 20 min to Sky top. The view was very beautiful from skytop and it's worth the hike.

By TWE |

Not made for claustrophobic people. Not made for overweight people. Not made for children with any fear! This is a DIFFICULT hike and you can get easily hurt. Once you start there is no turning back BUT mid way there is a way to get into the stairs if you think you can't anymore. I recommend you to go all the way! It surprise me that they say "8 years and up". Lots of 8 years old can't do this. I had 2 kids with me 8 and 10. They were fine but I can see some kids freaking out. There were 2 adults in front of us and the man barely made it. It took us about 1 hour to do the whole thing. Be aware of the end of the trail...it will be a REAL squeeze and the most claustrophobic part. The view from the top is awesome! Go all the way up in the tower! Another tip: There is a bathroom all the way up just in case. ;)
BTW...Get the day pass and don't stay in the hotel (ridiculous expensive for very little!)

The paths are calming and sweet. Would recommend if in the area. A little pricey and can be strenuous on the feet.

By C A M |

Such a gorgeous location. Stunning grounds during fall foliage, wonderful gift shop, amazing views and architecture. The garden has a two level tree house. The lake is breathtaking. Be sure to have a seat on the Parlor Porch to take it all in.

By YoungLady828 |

Every year my husband and I have dinner and hike the trails at Mohonk Mountain House in the autumn or during Thanksgiving. It is such a treat and we are always awed by the spectacular beauty of nature there!

By BBE2 |

Enjoyed our 7.5 mile hike which alternated between easy and moderate. The trail was called the Millbrook Ridge Trail. I imagine there are some hikes that offer more of a challenge but this one was perfect for our ability level. The most difficult part of this hike is probably the first part of the trail which is essentially a rock scramble, but at least it is at the beginning and can be avoided on the return by taking the carriage road back when it comes up off of Coxing Trail.

I especially want to recommend stopping at the visitor's center to speak with the staff about recommended hikes. The fellow who helped us was wonderful. He outlined on the map for us the perfect hike after listening to what we were looking for and was just a pleasure to talk with . Sorry I didn't get his name or I would give him a shout out here.
Trails are very well marked and easy to follow. Looking forward to a return trip to Mohonk preserve.

By scot f |

Always wanted to checkout the "gunks" - so went on Friday after Thanksgiving with my children aged (24, 21 & 14) and the dog.

We had a fairly strenuous day; about 9 miles of hiking.

You can make this as easy or hard as you like. The carriage road is flat, with excellent views where you can observe the technical rock climbing.

Want something a little harder? High Peter's kill trail is a good one.

Imagine you can even get a technical rock climbing course if you wish (i saw a family doing so)

Beautiful geology and nature here. Trails are well marked and Preserve staff is helpful. You will pay $12 per person for this extra help -- well worth in my opinion.

By Pamela M |

I've been here once before and knew I needed to come back. It's so incredible to have a place like this not too far from a metropolitan area. I highly recommend the lemon squeeze for anyone interested in rock scrambling. It's one of the best scrambles around. And the views are phenomenal! There's so much to do, I'm definitely going back soon.

By 689sofia |

Despite getting lost a few times we had a wonderful time hiking up to this peak. Great view.
I just wish the trail was a little better marked.

By Ina S |

The Mohonk Preserve is comprised of thousands of acres around the Monhonk Mountain House. Trails range from beginner level to challenging, you can hike for hours without seeing another soul. Being immersed in nature's beauty is so restorative!

By SherylChaye |

Mohonk Preserve has beautiful trails, a serene lake, and a Victorian Mansion turned into a 5 Star hotel. A great place to relax, rejuvenate, recharge. Spend the day at the preserve or overnight at the hotel. Loved it!

By Carson |

This is one of my favorite places to hike and explore within 90 miles of NYC (near New Platz, in Gardinier, NY).

Don't mix up the private resort with the Preserve they are completely difference but work together. You will pay $29 for private entry and if you are willing to hike in two miles it will cost you $15 (do the math). I coordinate group hikes for no charge and am providing you insight from what I have observed from group members and the trails I've hiked for over 20 years.

The rock scrambles here are lots of fun, challenging, and awesome for those who want an unforgettable experience. More unforgettable is the scenery! Vistas of rock and cliff formations that will amaze you and if you take certain trails it will add to the experience.

We start at the Coxing Kill lot - Split Rock where there is a waterfall and swim hole (this is limited capacity due to covid and modest sized parking lot). Parking is free but there is a park use fee - as mentioned it is $15 per person.

From this lot you can go to Split Rock to the swim hole and waterfall (within 2,000'), across Clove Road, or from inside the parking lot you can head towards the Lost City for a hike.

If you pass Split Rock onto the Old Minnewaska Trail (Blue) you will hike on wide forgiving trail that starts off as a carriage like trail but then gets more rocky and uneven over the two miles to get to the intersection past the first trail turnoff.

From here within 500' to the left you will find your first 'refrigerated' rock scramble through boulder caves, and them up to where you can travel uphill to a connector that will take you to an incredible trail to left with rock scrambles, or to the right if you want want to take a massive boulder field rock scramble.

There are more details of these areas online. But if you travel to the left you will eventually get to a point that you can access Eagle Cliffs, as well as Lake Mohonk and the celebrated Labyrinth and Lemon Squeeze (take heed - on any summer and fall weekend the backup in the labyrinth and especially the <286' (?) ladder you'll have to negotiate inside a shoulder wide crevice.

When you finally emerge you will take in Skytop tower overlooking Lake Mohonk and some unforgettable views of the lake, the other white castled cliffs, and the private property. Just breathtaking and worth some time to climb up the tower for a even greater view.

After descending down the mountain on a even carriage trail you can make your way back to parking lot along an easy but long carriage trail where you will see rock climbers from all over the world, and boulderers. The multi-pitch climbing walls attract climbers from throughout the world.

There will be a short connector trail to get you to Split rock and parking lot area once you reach the overpass at end of this portion of the carriage trail.

The description only provides spot descriptions because the details are way too long to post here, and they already exist online.

This NOT wheelchair accessible.
It is okay for anyone not fearful of climbing over and around boulders, not claustrophobic in boulder caves, and physically fit to do the distance over partially primitive trail.. and after a long hike of 9 - 13 miles Split Rock will help you cool off.

If you are a hiker, in decent condition, or adventurous.. grab a map from the ranger who you will pay a trail fee to (they will even provide directions and info), bring 2-3+ liters of hydration, hiking shoes or boots with great traction, and snacks or lunch - just remember to carry out whatever you carry in (there are no trash receptors except at Skytop area ( I don't remember if there is a trash receptacle at parking lot).
There is a lavatory (non-flushing) in parking lot. After that it's the woods.

Enjoy this space but please keep it clean and pristine so the next person can enjoy just as you have. lately some inconsiderates have discarded their face masks throughout the areas closer to the private property.. most likely not hiking enthusiasts but car tourists or novices who have no respect or regard for nature and the gift they have been given.

We took a one hour hike to the lake in mid July , hot summer day and ended our hike in the beautiful lake. Very refreshing .
We did not come with food or enough to drink, no where to buy refreshments so next time we will be fully equipped for a picnic .

By Antarsul |

Wonderful hiking experience close to home. Nice visitor center where you can choose several hiking trails. The employees at the center are very helpful, they will recommend you what trail is more suitable based on how much time you have. We chose the trail to the sky top which takes you about 3 hrs at a leisurely pace. From this trail you will be able to see the mohonk mountain house by the lake as well as walk through the so call “lemon squeeze”. Basic rock climbing, with wonderful views of The Valley around New Palzt. Took us about 2 hrs to come back to the visitor center. In total we walked around 8 miles. Wonderful experience with nature all around.
If you are interested in rock climbing and mountain biking this is the place for that as well.
Highly recommended and well worth the drive and the 15 dollars per adult charge.
On the way back we stopped at new palzt for dinner in one of the many good restaurants available.

Mohonk Mountain House is an absolutely beautiful place in upstate New York. The food is wonderful and the hotel is a pleasure to walk around. We visited the spa and it was fantastic. During our stay we hiked on their many trails and sat on the porches in one of their many rocking chairs. We have been to Mohonk many times and plan to go again many times in the future.

Most awesome hike my husband as I have ever done in our lives so far. It was one breathtaking view after anther. Will definitely be going again and again.

By Christina |

If you plan on hiking in the preserve to the Mohonk Mountain House, be ware it’s a total of 8-9 miles hike back and forth. The Mountain House also does not welcome hikers who are not registered guests. The hotel staff will make sure you know that. You pay $15/person to go on hike in preseve but it is not worth it. There’s lot more trails that are free and more pleasant.

By GranolaGal |

Beautiful views, great hiking fun for the family. Trails for all levels, from gradual well groomed incline to rock scrambles through short caves and crevices. The ladders and steps are fun for the kids.

By Cttraveler66 |

We came here on a recommendation from a friend who had been last spring. Well worth the 3 hour drive here. We decided to hike to the labyrinth and do the rock scramble. Challenging but amazing and so worth it when you climb out of the crevice to see the view! It was so much fun and everyone there was having a great time. From the visitor center it was supposed to be about 8 miles round trip. We ended up doing 9.3 mi by coming back on the Overcliff trail. Everything was just beautiful and it was really fun watching all the rock climbers on the Gunks. Yes the $12 pp fee was a bit steep but I understand that it helps keep the preserve what it is. If we lived closer the $55 pp yearly membership would be well worth it. Great trails to mountain bike on as well. The views from the top are spectacular! This is a must return!!

By AviKessel |

We spent a lovely day in the preserve. It was a bit more than 20 for each to get in and then a shuttle to get to the house.
We started with a picnic at the picnic lodge, tables and maps were set for us to have our home made food with an option to buy a pizza or another treat.

Then we walked around the lake. The views are great and they were plenty of view points setup for us on high chairs.

We also tried the boats

Vey nice day, 2 hours drive away.

By Tara Lee D |

Hiked with friends for a whole day and if the hike wasn't beautiful enough itself the view from the tower sure was just spectacular.

By Lisa M |

The Preserve is a beautiful landscape and I am glad it is managed and protected for all to enjoy.
There are cliffs to climb, carriage paths to bike and trails to hike. Get there early on the weekends as parking lots fill quickly.

By corinnelow |

If you love Hiking, Biking, walking trails, climbing trails, you will LOVE Mohonk Preserve! Sometimes we stay at Mohonk Mountain House (which is fabulous). When we decide to just go for the day, we drive to Mohonk Mountain House and book a massage. When booking any spa treatment or dining reservation, you get to stay on the premises for the day and enjoy all the nature trails have to offer.

By ChristineMargaret |

I had a house next to Mohonk for many years and cherish my memories. The preserve was created by the Smiley family, who still own the gorgeous Mohonk Mountain House, to protect an extraordinary area of natural beauty and geological significance. The rock itself is a hard conglomerate, favourite of rock climbers because it is nubby but stabile. The escarpments are part of the Sauangunk range of hills, cliffs and rivers. There are great old carriage trails for hiking, cross-country skiing and snow shoeing. The wild rhododendron and mountain laurel are beautiful in the spring, summers are cool but little streams and swimming holes will cool you off, the autumn is a bit too busy with "leaf peepers" so avoid the weekends, and the winters offer lovely views. If you hike all the way to Lake Awosting you will be treated to a distant view of the Catskills. It is a peaceful place of great wild diversity and beauty. Wild flowers, birds abound. It is a favourite spot for birders to watch the hawks migrate in spring and autumn.

By Toivoo |

Save a few $ and hike to the top from the preserve, instead of the snooty lodge. It's a far nicer hike under the cliffs and through the woods as well

By Dolphena |

I spend every moment I can here, hiking, skiing. Every season has its own beauty. There's nothing like it anywhere else, the trails are great and all with great views.

Stop and get a map, a day pass...and get moving! There are several parking areas at the various trailheads. *If you, or someone in your party is physically challenged, park in the lot closest to the pedestrian bridge over 44-55. That lot gives you access to the 5 mile loop that is fairly flat. Follow the overcliff trail. **If you are looking for a medium hike, there are lots of trails. My advice is to park at the coxing kill lot and hike up, past split rock on the Shongum path. This hike takes you up to the 5 mile loop listed above. If you are still willing to hike from there...head for the bridge over 44-55, go to your right and take the blue marked trail called "Millbrook Ridge " (you will need to do some rock scrambling) but its worth it to see the view. You will get to the top within 10-12 minutes! Its worth it! *** for even more adventure, get back to the car, go past the coxing parking lot on Clove rd and you will come across a driftwood sculpture park featuring wood that is over 100 years old!

By Tr0picfan1 |

We have been here in the past, the rock climbing is fantastic! We were going to go back again this here, however, they have eliminated the bus that takes you from the parking lot up to the hotel where the rock climbing is. This means you have to hike up a steep road for about 2 miles until you can finally get to the beginning of the hike. You'll be ready to go home before the hike even begins! The person answering the phone told me they eliminated the bus to dissuade people from coming because there were too many outsiders coming to use the trails. Such a shame that they did this. Either way, for a fraction of the price, head over to Minnewasaka State Park, it's a few minutes away and they have great hiking trails for a nominal $10 parking fee

By JoyToday |

We parked our car and hiked from the Mohonk Visitors Center all the way to the tower. The gentleman working at the Visitors Center was super helpful, highlighted the course that would take us there. The path's are wide gravel "roads" very easy to travel, you could definitely bring a bike and ride about 3/4 of it but cannot take a bike up the remaining 1/4. We were here on Memorial Day weekend so there were lots of climbers, really fun to watch them, and lots of tourists by bus load but it still was not overly crowded. We did start early, around 8:30 am so we were finishing up while others were just starting. As we approached the Mohonk Mountain House it was stunning and out of a movie- I was so blown away by how beautiful is was and felt very European. We wanted to climb "lemon Squeeze" to get to the tower but did not find it the way we came up- there are many ways to get to the tower- some very easy on paths and others harder. We ended up taking the wooden "stairs" and that was fine- definitely not a good option for kids or seniors. It was simply stunning at the top- the pictures we took were amazing. Ate a quick lunch we packed and climbed the tower then headed to check out the Mountain House. Hiked back after about an hour checking out the House and the tower and it was a much quicker hike on the way back. This was on the longer side, maybe 4-5 hours but we would 100% do it again.

The Mohonk Preserve consists of about 2500 acres of mountain terrain within 75 miles of New York City. Located just west of New Paltz, New York, the Preserve offers many many miles of wonderful walking trails, rock climbing opportunities, and spectacular views of the more distant Catskill Mountains. Close enough to the city for a day trip, and large and varied enough for weeks of adventure, this is one of the state's best tourist destinations, yet never seems to be crowded. It is also contiguous with another 4500 acres of publicly accessable mountain terrain featuring lakes, streams and wildlife of all kinds. The word "Mohonk" derives from the Indian word for "lake in the sky," referring the the crystal clear waters of the lake at the very top of the ridge where the Mohonk Mountain House is located.

Andrew, besides being a superb instructor was really fun and pleasant to be with. He was easy to talk to, helped us or should I say me, stay calm and was a great instructor. While belaying 50 feet below, he was able to guide us as to where to put our toes or find a hand hold as if he was standing beside us. He knew the face of the mountain better than i know the potholes on the block I live on.
He was able to get a 60 year old man to climb up 60-70 feet on what initially looked like a bare cliff face and then willingly go back up again. Almost makes going back to work livable when you have memories like this to think about when you feel the office walls closing in. They were accommodating for a last minute booking and we look forward to a return trip next summer.

By Vinnydee2015 |

We hiked the preserve with great anticipation and chose the Upper and Lower Carriage Trails. These are less scenic than other trials on the park but suited our condition for that day. Rock climbers would do well here as plenty of cliff faces provide ample opportunities for this activity. This preserve is nice but in my opinion not as pretty as the nearby Lake Minnewaska. The persevere costs $12.50 a person and frankly the frugal hiker in me truly believes that Minnewaska offers more trails, recreation options and scenic beauty, plus it's only $3 for a car load of people. So many great climbs in this area for all levels of climbers. We chose to rent a guide from High-Xposure to climb some multi-pitch gems including High Exposure which is a 5.7 so easy to navigate with breath taking views. Lot's of trails too and places to swim if your looking to cool down!!

I have visited this place and my daughter works there and if you want to see a hidden gem that has everything in a resort, google this. Not inexpensive but suburb.

I visit the Preserve a few times a week since I moved here 2 years ago. It is such a great place. Split Rock, Millbrook, Duck Pond, Bonticou - all such great hikes. Beautiful in all seasons. Highly recommend taking advantage of this beautiful preserve.

By Danielle B |

We hiked here yesterday, (beginning of October) although the leaves did not peak it was still beautiful and serene. There weren't too many people, which was a surprise since I am told it can pack out pretty quick. Originally we wanted to hike near the Mohonk House but if you are not a guest a day pass is $27 per person. Our Inn had given us passes to the preserve so it costs us nothing and we where pleasantly surprised at how challenging some of the trails where and the scramble!!! This was my first scramble so I thought it was pretty challenging and learned if you look down during the scramble you may have to overcome the fear of heights to continue! There is a trail which also leads to the top if you don't fair the scramble well, its def worth it the views are spectacular.

By Charles S |

Did biking and hiking. Hiking was great with all the rock scrambles. The mountain biking was tough and ungroomed trails.
There are 2 ways to get in. Gate parking is 26 per person but if you walk another mile and park at reserve you only pay 15 per person.
Recommend to check it out at least once. I had a blast and was there for 8 hours.

By Ken A |

Very easy hike with great views. Lots of rope climbers on the cliffs. Wide enough trail for 4 or 5 abreast. Fee required but funds are well dedicated to the preserve. Great info station and well maintained trails.

By VillaTMA |

Lots of hiking trails for beginners. There's boating, horse back riding (two weeks advance notice for outside guest not staying at hotel) and other activities. There's an admission just to go to the Mohonk Resort and you can't go to the hotel area unless you are a guest. Luckily I was with a tour group and spent an afternoon hiking and admiring the scenic spot and taking pictures.

By 565garryg |

Went to overlook in the “gunks”, NEVER DISAPPOINTING. A visit to the visitors center is always rewarding, staff are friendly and knowledgeable.First time guests were impressed.

By Louetta |

If you're in the Mohonk area to climb or otherwise recreate and you feel like a swim try the Split Rock Swimming hole. Head out of New Paltz on 299, right on US44 past the Vistor's Center, around the hairpin turn and look for Clove Rd on your right. Down Clove Rd past the Trapps Rd turn on the left and look for parking. You'll need a pass for the preserve available at the Visitor's Center or from a passing ranger.

Now there isn't much more here than a small waterfall coming down through two large sections of rock forming a small pool but it's great on hot summer days with chilly water. You can lie in the sun on the rocks, picnic, throw a frisbee around, that sort of thing. There's a path that leads out back where you can lie out with as little or nothing on as you like which can be great if you're hiking or biking and don't have a swim suit. Don't be surprised if the ranger comes back there looking to collect a fee even if your naked. Never fear though the area up by the Split Rock itself is very family friendly.

We hiked from the welcome center to the Mohonk House. It's about 4 miles in one direction. It starts with a couple hundred steps up a rock staircase. Then its gradually uphill for the rest of the way. A moderate hike with beautiful views. Bring some water on a warm summer day!

By kars10 |

From Mohonk to Minnewska to Ice Caves, its all good. Mohonk is amazing, and so is the rest. Don't forget to research a bit and plan ahead. There are so many things to see and you want to chose trails based on who is hiking and restrooms and parking and food. Its one of the best hikes you can take.

By ppetraj |

Always humbling, the trails go on forever and you never get tired. Wild life snounds, challenging rock scrabble and views for miles. You can run for miles in the cool shade all summer.

By PDLich |

Well, its hard to review an area that you have decided to make your home. I started rock climbing here in 1971... just at the end of the Vulgarian era. I even had a copy of last Vulgarian Digest!

This area has endless opportunities for recreation and culture. As a college town we enjoy "Piano Summer" concert series, plays, art, craft fairs, and endless yard sales with some really good finds! A wood stove... chef knives... etc! Just a stones throw from the CIA (not that governmental agency), we enjoy excellent food throughout the entire Hudson Valley. It seems that none of the graduates want to leave the area so the whole valley has excellent surprise hidden culinary gems! (The Main Course, the Would, A Tavola, The Huguenot, Crave, and many many more!) The Mark Gruber Art gallery even sells Jacques Torres Chocolate... The only place in the area that you can get them!

Of course this area is a sportsman's/sportswoman's paradise. There is rock climbing, ice climbing, cross country skiing on the preserve and nearby trails, snow shoeing, biking, tons of Kayaking, berry picking, sky diving, swimming (with clothes and without) and lots of hiking.

I certainly recommend this area to visit. Or should I say... stay away so the traffic doesn't get any worse!

If you're looking for a little piece of heaven in NYS, go no further than Mohonk Preserve. This wonderful non-profit seeks to preserve and educate the community and visitors on the unique eco-system of the Shawangunk Mountains and the surrounding land with organized hikes, educational programs for schools, and memberships. Activities abound including hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing and bouldering in the warm weather. In the winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing take over. The facilities are well kept and the staff is informative and always helpful. NY State is fortunate to have such a community member in our midst! Hopefully you'll have a chance to visit too!

I took an incredible hike through this gorgeous preserve last week. It was more rugged than I anticipated, but it was shear pleasure not running into a single soul for almost 3 hours.

By Hlbragg |

There are so many great trails to check out. Pack a lunch and bring plenty of water. The trails are well maintained and the staff is always willing to help guide you. Parking can be very difficult so arrive early. You won't be disappointed.

By Robert T |

The Mohonk Preserve is part of an interconnecting series of trails and parks. The main feature is a cliff face extending over a mile surrounded by carriage roads and hiking trails. Just off of rout 44/55 you can start at the visitors center where you can get a pass and learn about the area and the geology. There are several parking lots that access the trails. You can hike, run or bike on them and the carriage trails extend all the way to Minewaska State Park so the options are unlimited. There are a few streams and one or two swimming holes for hot days. The preserve does several programs with lectures and guided walks the will give you an opportunity to learn about the area hands on. Lastly the cliff face is one of the premier climbing areas in the northeast. On any given day you can walk along the carriage road and watch from below as climbers scale the 150+ foot high cliffs. If you are vacationing in the Hudson valley, or even looking for a nice day trip, the Mohonk Preserve is a great option for the outdoor minded.

By Courtney R |

This is a amazing walk with some of the most amazing views you will see! Is really a great walk for everyone!!

By maddyzanetti |

We had a blast here today. The trails are so well kept. Not a piece of litter to be found. There are great spots to hang out. Our dogs loved it. There was a wonderful visitors center and maps/signage were clear and easy to follow. I thought $15 per person to hike was a little high. My recommendation would be to charge per car load.

By Stephen G |

What a beautiful place to spend the day. Mohonk Nature Preserve has more trails than you can cover in a day. I particularly like the carriage ways for riding my bike in the summer because most of them are in the shade. There are beautiful views everywhere. It is $12 a day for hiking and $17 for biking. That is per person not per car.

By Charlie S |

The Gunks has always been a special place for us. We started climbing there 25 years ago and still do but now enjoy hiking just as much. The fees are a "little" steep ($12 to hike and $17 to climb) but totally worth it. A lot of easy carriage road biking as well.

By BusyBizTraveler |

We spent a fun day at the preserve. Our primary goal was to climb the labyrinth. We hiked up to the Mohonk Mountain House and then continued along the Mohonk lake up to the labyrinth and then up to the mountain top. The climb is streneous at times but the views are rewarding and the experience of squeezing your self up through very narrow gorges is worth the effort. Add to that great photo ops when you get to the peak (not for the faint of heart, even not watching the brave ones who pose at the very tip of the rock) and a great day is guaranteed.

I would not recommend this for kids below 12 years old or to anyone who is not in a good fit as the experience might become a nighmare.

By jimfromzim |

The reserve is well preserved and a fantastic family hiking outing close to NYC. Climb to the top of the old fire tower and soak in the views.

By Joann G |

Hike the day away! Start out early! There are many ways to get to a trail head, one of my faves is fro the 'hair pin turn'. Be prepared for a strenuous hike up, and some bouldering. If you can persevere, the reward at the top outcropping is a view all the way to the NYC skyline in the vague distance (on a clear day). If you know your trails, you can access the Smiley Tower.

By Paul L |

I hike here all the time. Best hiking on the east coast. A must see!! Bring the family. But come early as parking fills up fast

By Lar |

The trails in the preserve are well maintained, with beautiful views, and walks for every level, However, the access is limited to those who can afford the steep entry fees of $15.
00 per person. Previous open access has been fenced off. So Disappointing.

By Nathan S |

The best the Hudson Valley has to offer. A good place to get away and "unplug" This is our third time back and we would come back again. Enjoy our stay every time.

By zachzimmerman |

had a thrilling hike along Undercliff and up to Skytop for the first time this spring. Always look forward to when the trails open up for the season and I can get up to the tower. Will be back many times this year!

By sarah b |

The setting is lovely and peaceful, great for older people and couples but really not for kids age 10-15. We tried three days to schedule a horseback ride but there were no openings. The limited game room is grossly inadequate and often occupied by adults. My daughter would be OK with just hanging with me in the Gym, but no, she is not allowed in even with an adult. Did i mention the room with a pool table is not large enough to make a shot without banging the wall. They should be clear, NO KIDS.

By marianc95 |

This amazing nature preserve consists of 8000 acres of cliffs, forests, fields, ponds and streams. It offers hiking, cycling, train running, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, horseback riding, and rock climbing. There is an annual membership fee, or one can purchase a day pass. There is an excellent visitors center with a couple of very short, gentle (free) trails right nearby for children or visitors with limited mobility.

By Nicole H |

Great for hiking and rock climbing. It is one of the most popular sites for rock climbing in this area. The kikers love it too; because there are so many trails to explore. The views are tremendous. If you want to just drive by and enjoy the vistas, you can certainly do that, and it will be worth your time. There can be some traffic on the weekdays, but virtually none on weekdays.

By global845 |

Gorgeous hiking. Expensive tickets and parking at the Mohonk Mountain House (about $20/person), but they do a good job maintaining the gardens and facilities. The Lemon Squeeze is a fun experience, involving plenty of gorgeous views and adventurous terrain, scrambling over rocks and crawling through tight spaces. You will need about 4-5 hours to enjoy the experience, covering about 6 miles. The path up from the parking lot cuts through wooded forests, leading up to views over the manicured gardens of the beautiful Mohonk Mountain House. The path then leads through the gardens and past a nice lake, eventually bringing you to the Lemon Squeeze. Be ready for a challenge! you will be navigating a path through a maze of rocks, in out, over and under. The final leg will have you scaling vertically up an extremely tight crack in the mountain for what feels like 100 feet, but the view as you escape the crack will amaze you.

By stephen p |

This 7 mile walk which can be done as a round trip follows the ridge on top of the cliffs to reach Millbrook Mountain. We saw a black bear and had close up views of turkey vultures. The views from the ridge are expansive. There were only a few hikers on this trail. After reaching Millbrook Mountain, the return walk is down through the woods by a creek. the walk took about 4 hours. A great walk with some scrambling over rocks.

By Scanale41 |

We love the Mohonk Preserve! We hiked Frome the main Preserve building to Mohonk Mountain house property. Needed crampons due to icy trails. Beautiful day!

By Irene F |

There was brush fire activity near Lake Minniwaska & we couldn't drive to there. Entered south through Mohonk Preserve but police made us walk the 1/2 mile to the Wecome Center although when we got to the center, the guides said we could've driven to their parking lot. Too many agencies resulted in poor communication to the public, but luckily not a significant event. Hate to think how the bueracracy functions during a real disaster!

Stay at Mohonk Mountain House and hike into Mohonk Preserve. Endless miles of trails along cliff edges and mountain tops to enjoy the beautiful vistas. Trails range from rock scrambles to groomed gravel paths. Something for all ages.

By StringTheory58 |

Wonderful trails for hiking as well as carriage roads for cycling. A true gem of a destination. I live here and take advantage of the Preserve often. If you are just visiting the area, consider staying at the Mountain House.

By Jordan P |

Got here early like 7:30-8 am and didn't have to pay which was good walked all around and took some great photography. Great place cause not alot of people it was a perfect day to hike. Will be back to visit.

By informed c |

this is not a hike. it is rock scrambling. very easy to snap an ankle or kill yourself. i hike every weekend and this hike tested my endurance but i did finish it. never again will i do this adventure. one and done.at 6 foot3 and 210 pounds, i barely made it through the final opening. needed a pusher and a puller to contort my body to fit through a microwave sized hole. happy to have finished. never again!!!!!

By Halfmoon710 |

Great place to hike for all levels. Beautiful scenery well marked trails. I come here each time I visit & thoroughly enjoy the area. Great location for families & some trails open to bikes & horses. It was a bit unnerving to learn that this time of year hunters are also welcome. Well worth the time to stroll or hike particularly on a nice day.

By TonyK300 |

For a naturalist this are is profoundly exciting and pleasing to the senses. With tons of trails, rock climbing, and vistas that beg to be photographed it's hard to believe it's only 1 1/2hrs outside NYC.

By Aabbady |

It was great sunny day to walk up the mountain. During my way up I was able to see everything, by the time I reach the hotel I thought there is place to set and eat or drink. It could be but was not on the map I was giving, it was nothing but all the instruction? I visited every spot going up so my return to the parking by the gate was long and boring. Specially for one like me, I was there for quick visit and I can use this time to see something else in the city.
It is great place to visit but you have to schedule half of the day or more. For me it could be way shorter for someone visiting the city for only couple days

By Dennis H |

This is one of the finest hotel resorts imaginable! The hiking in this area is spectacular. The staff is super friendly. The hotel grounds are equally fantastic.

By Normon |

We wanted a relaxing hike so when I saw this path was listed as moderate to strenuous I was a little weary. However, after completing the hike, I can say that it is extremely easy and NOT really a hike.

You basically walk a mile and a half to the rock scramble ...and then scramble up it! It's awesome and I would definitely do it again - I wished the scramble lasted longer, actually!

However, this hike was by no means challenging or strenuous - and the rock scramble, while it looks scary, is really not once you start up. I wouldn't even call this route a hike, but more of a trail to get to the fun part.

The scramble is great for people of all ages, but not dogs :(

By LunaPups |

Based on some recommendations, we hiked a lot more than we intended, but the main attractions we did were the Labyrinth/Lemon squeeze as well as the Bonticou Crag. The Crag was more climbing than we expected, but still awesome! Definitely don't bring too much in your pack, because it could get in the way (I only had to remove my back pack 1 or 2 times, but there wasn't too much in it). Also make sure you're with someone to share the awesome experience and views! By the way it was a 90 degree day, but there was an awesome breeze and a lot of cover which made it seem like the 70s.

There were food and bathrooms only at the centerpoint of the trails, before we got to the trails. We parked at the free parking lot by the golf course and paid $21 each to hike. There was a shuttle up to the Mohonk house.

Also NOTE: If you take Northeast Trail back west from Bonticou Crag, towards the end they don't want you crossing the golf course so you have to go down to the road for a 10-15 minute walk back up to the entrance.

By MaryE35600 |

Been reading a lot of great reviews of Mohonk. This place exceeded my expectations. Wish it was warmer out but guess this gives us another reason to come back. Would definitely recommend.

By Shermyanne |

Apparently the preserve was part of the lands of the hotel until it was set up abs a separate non-profit.

I came down from the hotel on Laurel Ledge Road and biked through the area known as the Trapps before returning. The roads in the preserve are good quality gravel. The hotel trails are crushed slate while those in the Preserve are another native stone.

The Preserve is a unique natural resource. Hopefully, it will continue to enjoy funding and volunteer efforts to preserve it into the future

By Sammyduke |

Just looking around. Impressive! Great view! First time in this beautiful area. Shopped at the gift shop for some locally made items.

By John H |

We needed to burn calories after enjoying a night out. The December temperature was 55 and partly sunny. We did a moderate challenge of a hike of less than four miles. There was easy rock climbing without any equipment. The vistas were beautiful. The trails were well marked with blue paint to protect against becoming lost. What a great asset for the New Paltz area!

By j_ardinger |

Beautiful scenery to walk through. Moderates to experts for hiking. This is tick area so be sure to take precautions and check each other after.

By Richard L |

One must place the Mohonk Preserve on their bucket list. We took a wonderful hike with the grandkids, our sons and their significant others. The long views were magnificent. The Gonks were unbelievable. We saw rock face climbers practicing and the some of our group went bouldering under the watchful eye of a climbing expert in our family. Nature abounded from earthworms and millepedes to magnificent birds soaring in front of our eyes. The nature center is a must stop because their is a fee per person. Plus it is full of information about your visit.

By ReganFamily |

Some of the nicest, well maintained hiking trails in the area with tremendous views. Definitively worth the trip.

By A B |

There is so much to do at Mohonk. So many outdoor activities & in such a beautiful setting. Also many indoor activities as well. It really is overwhelming & a must see especially if you are a New York State resident.

By Trigib |

We stayed at the Mohonk Mountain House and hiked up to the Lemon Squeeze on a gorgeous fall day. Our group ranged in age from low 40’s up to 61. Needless to say we took our time but chose the more challenging route thru the lemon squeeze. The experience was fantastic! When you get up all the ladders and the last chunk of climbing the rocks out the top .... the view makes it all worth it! This is not for anyone with health concerns or anyone without a reasonable fitness level.... it’s one way UP.... and there are points at which you cannot change your mind and go back down. It was the highlight of our weekend !

By BellaFella82 |

Some really great hiking, and a nice rock scramble, but those a bit more adventurous and active. Keep in mind the rock scramble can be intense for some. The view at the top though is something just spectacular. They also have a walking hike that isn't as difficult.

By adrianadelaspozas |

A very unique lake up in the mountains that was formed by a glacier. Absolutely gorgeous place to be in direct contact with nature.

By Gabrielle M |

beautiful views hiking water. As a family, we have hiked up Gertrude's nose, went to Minnewaska state park, split rock, and Lake Minnewaska. Whether we have just an extra hour or so or we make it a full day. Never disappointed. People on the trails are always friendly. Just don't forget the water bottle.

By BigAppleGrl |

Love love the Gunks. Great rocks, trails for every level, basic services like clean toilets and parking. We've been members for the past 2 years and love it. We have a kid so have our favorite kid-friendly trails.

By mef845 |

A well-maintained, well-marked, stunning place to spend the day (or days). The wide carriage trails allow you to comfortably cover many miles (especially if you are on a bike) and the vistas are well worth the trip to the top.

By AdamStefanile1 |

A variety of hikes available for all different ages and experience, and the trails are also for bike riders.

By TravelGrrlNY |

It was OK. The rock formations are cool but not worth the $30 pp price tag. There are no differences in the rates for weekend vs. weekday anymore.

Here's what $30 gets you:

- a cool wristband to show that you are not a hotel guest and not allowed in the hotel
- a 2.2 mile hike to and from the parking lot to the Labyrinth
- Getting run off the path by service vehicles which for some reason can't use the roads that cars do

You're better off doing Breakneck for free.

By Olya M |

Great place for hiking, sightseeing, biking, romantic getaway. There are wide variety of trails some of them will take you to the very top of the mountains. Breathless views.

By Nancy L |

Mohonk has some of the most diverse and interesting hikes I have ever seen. You can do everything from technical climbing to bouldering to hiking to mountain biking or horseback riding here! People of all ages and abilities will have a great time exploring this beautiful nature preserve!

By Youshouldgo81 |

I read many reviews about the $30 charge, so I made sure to go to the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center not the mountain house, so that I would get charged the $15 pp rate. We picked a great day to go as all the parking lots were pretty much empty. At the Visitors center the person at the front desk was kind enough to recommend a trail for our party of 4 with two pups. As most of us were novice hikers, he recommended the Overhill/Underhill trail. You can access the trail from the Visitors Center by a steep hike or drive to the next parking spot #2 and take the trail from there which is what we did. The view was just beautiful and this time of the year with the fall foliage was just perfect. The hike took us over 3 1/2 hours but we stopped to have coffee and snacks and took many pictures along the way. I definitely recommend this trail if you inexperienced. Also to note the Visitors Center restrooms were very clean.

By Lolly’s Look |

We spent a weekend at the Mohonk Mountain House and did some hiking here. We hiked to the skytop. It was a nice hike with fall foliage. The trails are marked and easy to follow.

By AB73 |

Overpriced, underwhelming, and poorly marked on the map. After spending $30 to park 2+ miles away from the main grounds, I came home to realize that I didn't even successfully reach the Lemon Squeeze. And I did my research ahead of time too! Nowhere on the map does it say that the Lemon Squeeze is actually located inside the crevice. Also, trying to find the crevice is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. If the preserve is going to make day hikers park off-site, the least they could do is keep their golf carts from driving on the pedestrian trail into/out of the preserve. Not sure why the carts can't use the road instead, but I really didn't appreciate the additional dirt and noise.

By Nittai L |

I knew exactly what I wanted to do. The Labyrinth was the most rewarding hike I have done in a while. The charge to get in is extremely pricey but it is worth it. It wasn't very long hike but once you reach the top you can go to other paths.

By Leslie A |

Plan ahead if you want to eat at the Monhonk house reservation required. Hiking is awesome and the cartridge roads many are relatively flat but have awesome views. Bring plenty of snacks and water as you need to be a hotel guest or have a reservation to enter the mountain house. The view to the sky tower is work the steep hike. The 15 fee is a little pricey but it is a well maintained park and worth conserding.

By OffBreatenTrail |

Great hiking trails for novices and experienced hikers. Glorious rock formations. Go early on weekends to avoid thr crowds. But don't let a crowded parking lot scare you away. You can find paths that are almost private

By angelvet |

Hiked the Trapps and Humpty Dumpty for wonderful views of the area. Interesting to watch climbers in this dog friendly preserve.

By Farmerd |

Stunning views, extensive trails, lots of opportunities for all levels of exertion and skill. Miles of carriage roads.

By 2ksr2 |

Yes, a day hiking pass is expensive. It's worth it if you use it.

We went as a family. The hike from the gate parking lot was trying for my eight year old and I thought that the day would not amount to much. We got to the entrance to the labyrinth and we were off to the races. The labyrinth was just the bomb. Our 8 and 10 year old were completely into it. I think I was the most worried of the bunch, as there are real dangers. None-the-less, we made it through the labyrinth and conquered the lemon squeeze to arrive at skytop and bask in the view. It was a beautiful day with popcorn clouds, blue sky and a high of 72°F.

Again, yes, the price is not cheap, $30/adult, $25/child under 14 as of 6/23/2021, but the experience is well worth it.

By bob_cindy_CT |

Wonderful to walk or hike. The views are incredible. Depending when and where you access, there may be a fee from the resort.

By jfschmidt |

If you're looking for a beautiful place to hike, the preserve has many options of trails. The tough ones and the easier ones. You can bike, hike, mtn climb all in the Hudson Valley beauty.

By Jillyjillyjilly |

Pretty scenic and great views. There were multiple places to park and hike more. There were nice rocky paths. A great place to enjoy nature!

By Mogulz |

I love the Labyrinth Trail. There are other rock scrambles in the Preserve but this is the must-do trail. The Mountain House charges a fortune for you to get on the property and you must walk nearly two miles from the parking lot to the Labyrinth, but it is worth it. An ideal visit would be one on a week day when the access fee is lower and there are fewer people. Take the full day to take meandering trails from the entrance to the Mountain House. There are so many great trails. The entrance to the Labyrinth is along the edge of the lake a couple hundred feet from the dock. In the scramble you will use your hands to pull yourself up, over and around boulders and crags. The sign at the beginning of the trail says hikers should be in 'excellent physical condition.' You're fine if you are nimble and sure-footed (and in at least 'good' physical condition). There are a few escape paths to the right as you proceed if you want to bail out. Just don't expect to be able to turn around. It is one way. It also says children under 8 should not attempt. My seven year old was fine and went back to do it again, but she is rather long legged for her age and can scramble like a monkey. There are some challenging and technical formations early on but the greatest is near the end. The Lemon Squeeze leads to the Crevice. Near the top of the crevice it is so tight you will need to remove your backpack and pass it over your head as you climb the final top steps of the ladder. Then you're at the top of Sky Top with fabulous views.

What an absolutely blissful place Mohonk preserve is! If you love the outdoors and marvelling at nature in a safe environment, then Mohonk Preserve should be on your bucket list.

Easiest access would be staying at the Mountain House as a base from where you can explore every day.
The valley is so expansive and there are miles and miles of trails that if you trekked a little everyday it would still take you a whole year to see it all! We loved walking and exploring the area everyday during our 3 days there.

There are rock scrambles and a labyrinth for those who are in top physical condition, otherwise, there are easier trails - all marked or cleared or reasonably surfaced, so little chance of you getting lost. Lots of wildlife to spot like deer, squirrels, wild hares and chipmunks. There have been bears spotted in the wider areas but the likelihood of encountering one is minimal.

There are so many fantastic awe-inspiring cliff-top vistas that you'll find it difficult to choose a favourite! Love the lookouts placed in ideal photo-op spots!

We admired it all as we don't get to experience the temperate forests living in the Caribbean. And it's lovely seeing the foliage colours starting to turn!

If we lived closer we would go regularly as it is easily accessible and a monitored, safe hiking environment.

By bobbydnyc |

This place is gorgeous. I highly recommend the labyrith and the humpty dumpty and edge hill cliff. the views are simply incredible!!!

By kjambro |

This preserve is on the Shawanagunk mountain ridge which is prime climbing area for climbers. We came thru in the winter, it was a little icy in patches-definitely need Yak tracks in some parts. Views are worth it.

By Janelle3568 |

Love this place for cross country skiing and mountain biking on the carriage paths. I only wish the carriage paths weren't so heavily graveled and they keep widening them which seems unnecessary. Absolutely beautiful scenery almost any time of year.

By kpdance |

Sure it's beautiful, yes it's exspensive, yes the lots are full by 10:00 on weekends. Try Minnewaska if you want great views, swimming, hikes and pay way less by the car load. Whatever you do don't park on the roads if the lots are full, you can be ticketed and sometimes towed! The volunteers are nice but are terrible at directing the road traffic when the preserve lots are full!

By g0g0g027 |

Beautiful reserve. We swam in the Split Rock swimming hole, which was fantastic. One parking lot gives you a nice, 20 minute stroll through the woods.

By AJS-NY |

Mohonk is one of the most beautiful places in the Mid-Hudson region. The trails are plentiful and all are amazing. It is a mountain so you will be rewarded with extraordinary views of the area below. Good for almost all levels of endurance.

A must-do when in the Gardiner area. Beautiful, easy to follow trails along springs and mountain laurel.

By Michelle S |

Accessible walks, dog friendly, amazing diversity of habitats and wildlife,
Cliff faces, but both easy and difficult hikes.

We visited and did the rather simple Overlook hike that took about 2 hours. The views were wonderful on one side and slightly underwhelming on the other. Everyone we encountered was nice and it was a beautiful day to be out there. We found staff at Visitor Center to be very helpful. Also dog friendly.

This was our first time to this part of NY state--we've lived here all our life. It's is really spectacular with excellent trails and other things to do.

We trek only the West Trapps trails and it was a pleasant, easy walk. It is about 2 miles back and forth from the parking lot entrance and the signs are well kept by the trees so you know where to go. The brochure we got from the visitor center explained some of the early settlement in that area and that was pretty interesting. I just think that for $12/ person it can become quite expensive for a day-pass.

Beautiful, varied walk. Several trails for different abilities including one for people with disabilities.

The Mohonk Preserve is a great local recreation area with miles of trails. The reason I am giving it 3 stars is because of the limited access and fees. There is almost no free/trail side parking and roadside parking is forbidden. There are only a few parking lots and they do not have a lot of spaces. You have to get there early in the day if you want a spot. In addition, this is not the place I would go for an hour or two. They charge $10 to park even if you go at the end of the day, which is ridiculous. Anytime after 4:00 or 5:00 should be free.

If you want to hike all around here, New Palz has one of the best hiking areas around. Coined "the Lemon Squeeze" When I did this hike we started about 6-8 miles out from the mohonk mountain house. Once there, we hiked around the quarry, then up the main trail where the "Lemon Squeeze" started. A few ricket stairs that went through the rocks. One was so tight you felt like a a lemon being squeezed... Love this area. To see it when the leaves change, a slice of goodness. I miss my hikes there and look forward to the day I can get back to do this again.

Having never been to Mohonk Preserve before, we asked the person working the register for a recommendation. We asked for a moderately strenuous hike that would last a couple hours. Leaving from the Visitor's Center we did hike up a short trail to the Undercliff Road and then did a full circle on this road. Unfortunately, it was exactly that - a gravel road. And while it was interesting to see the rock climbers along the way, and the scenery was pretty, we basically went on a 5 mile walk. If we return, I would definitely look for something a bit more challenging and a bit more scenic.

Wonderful, well marked and cleared trails. Go early, parking can get filled. Incredible views. Unsurpassed beauty.

The Mohonk Preserve is a very large area with lots of trails. Some trails allow biking and strollers (the carriage trail) Plan to spend a few hours and definitely stop at the Visitor's center on Route 44-55.

Lovely views and walks around this nature area. Definitely a must if in NYC and have some time to get out of the city. Breathe some fresh air and enjoy what the U.S. Used to be like.
