3 of 101 Best Attractions in Monterey

Outstanding trail with wonderful views. We walked, but many people were biking and there are plenty of rental places to rent one.

Beautiful Scenery, great for all ages and families. Some of the best weather is going on right now, must go!

Good views as we drove the trail on departure. Good access to beach if required. Would come back for longer visit

Stunning, just stunning. Get out and walk, cycle, stand, oogle. Just take it all in. It is BEAUTiful.

I absolutely LOVE this trail! It's excellent for walkers, runners, bicyclists. SO many places to stop and sit and enjoy the views. Lover's Point is fun to visit. Be sure to take full advantage of this trail!

I know I didn’t walk the entire trail, but at 82, I found this a beautiful area to take a walk. It was along the bay with beautiful views everywhere. The path is nicely divided for walking and bike riding. Lots of flowers and sea birds. Also benches along the way.

In Monterey, the food is expensive, the lodging is expensive, the Aquarium is expensive, but the rec trail is FREE! Guess what, tide pools, whales, otters, seals are available without a ticket. A leisurely walk (or a fast walk) from Fisherman's wharf to Cannery Row, to Lover's Point, to Ocean View trail, to Asilomar Beach, you'll see Victorian Homes, surfers, outcroppings and aquamarine water. For a family interested in the ascetic beauty of the area, there is no comparable experience and the price is right. If you happened to tow a bicycle with you, the trail has alternative bike routes that parallel the pedestrian path--pedal on! Restaurants, coffee shops, etc. are always within walking distance, restrooms are conveniently placed, parking is mostly free and there is lots of it. If you count your vacation dollars carefully, you'll fall in love with this priceless experience. Do it!

I rented a bicycle ($10/hr) and it was the BEST time. Spectacular views. I rode from downtown out to Lover’s Point on the trail, then switched to the road for the rest of the trip to the lighthouse. Highly recommend.

We stopped several times though out our time in Monterey along this trail and throughout the stops along Ocean Drive. Great views, clean and rocky beaches!

Wow so beautiful and great to watch nature at her best .Great paved paths and shoot pictures and watch maybe a seal getting a sunbath. You can stroll at your own pace and not very much other people

This is an amazing part of the world (looking amazing even on the satellite views) and which we crossed so many times in several days as we got lost coming from Pebble beach trying to find our hotel downtown after enjoying the Fisherman's wharf.
The area is simply stunning or maybe I have been a great lover of the ocean: you have the great skies with the ocean to one side and this stunning inland to the other side.
All looks peaceful and far away from the madness you get in central London for example. Why were cities even built for people to harass eachother with their needs in the big tower blocks?
Enjoy it while it lasts.

this is kind of a funky trail half bike path, if you don't mind walking running on asphalt and half way in the road sometimes. You can take it from downtown up to sand city, then take the beach back or vice versa. plenty of things to do along the way.

We rented bikes and cycled around the peninsula to Asilomar, I think it was. The children are 7 and 9 and were absolutely fine on the bikes, and the road was nice and flat. A lot of it in this direction after a certain point is on the road but there is a cycle path (the other direction from Monterey is just on the trail with only pedestrians/cyclists). An absolutely beautiful and relaxing way to spend a few hours, day-dreaming of living in one of the houses over looking the sea! Lots of places to stop to have a paddle / appreciate the wildlife and, as others have said, it's free...apart from the cycle hire ;)

We took the trail from downtown to the Monterey Aquarium. It was a beautiful walk, amazing how blue and clear the water is. We walked early morning so there was little activity from the seals they all seemed to be resting from their exciting night out.
The trail is lined with beautiful cypress trees and colorful flowers great locations to take pictures. We passed Old Fishermans Warf and Sisters Park. It was very clean and well taken care of.

Spectacular views, such peaceful surrounding so close to the city. We stayed about 2 blocks from access to this trail and it was so nice to go and walk along and watch the ocean, the wildlife. We went our first night in town to watch the sunset. Fabulous! Take advantage of this free experience. Makes you happy to be in California :)

started this trail after we left the aquarium went down to lovers point. we stopped often as my boys would see the rocks and want to climb over them, would have walked further but because we took it slow it was getting dark. views are just as they say, beautiful. the family bikes looked like alot of fun and the trail was not overly crowded.

Super great outdoor activity - enjoyed wildlife viewing at beaches and marinas. - dedicated bike/hike trail good signage and goes through the back of town. A Relatively flat trail friendly to novice bikers and more engage riders. We rented bikes in town - 2 to 3 options available all prices comparable.

With loads of free parking along the road, there was no issue finding a convenient place to park for the trail. If you're looking for parking at Lover's Point, there's a bit of extra space. I didn't see any sea life while I was there but it didn't detract at all from the overall stunning views of the waves crashing over the jagged rocks. There is a stunning variety of greenery and different types of plant life - most of which I'd never seen before. Although the path itself is quite narrow is a lot of places, people were very nice about yielding to each other. I was jogging but there were people walking and walking their dogs along the entire trail. Take your time if you have it. I didn't but I still loved the time I spent there...

This trail is along the scenic coast with views of the waves and harbor seals sunning themselves. You'll find folks walking, running and riding bicycles, enjoying the day.

Popular with walkers, cyclist, commuter bikes nice walk either towards Cannery Row or up to the Naval Post Grad. And a little further I found the Monterey Fish House!!!

Great walk, great wildlife, sea, and day. Walked the trail from the wharf to the aquarium and stopped at cannery row shops, starbucks, and historical sights along the way. Was a wonderful day in monterey area.

Gorgeous trail! This is the great escape from your worries in life and much to explore! Brisk walk, nature at it's finest.

I was staying in Monterey and wanted to go for a run in the morning and the hotel recommend this trail. It was beautiful! The trail goes right along the water which spectacular views.
later in our visit, we came just to walk around and soak up the beautiful views.
would recommend it if looking for a place to walk or run!

This is a top attraction to experience while in the Monterey Bay area. Try not to rush this experience to drive along the coastline and walk some of the trails that hug the shoreline. There are plenty of places to walk out to the beach or rocks (where it's safe)!

My family rode bikes from Pacific Grove to Sand City. R/T about 9 miles. We made several stops, including Fisherman's Wharf for lunch. The trail is relatively flat with ever changing scenery. On this trip we saw the influx of thousands of red crabs near the Coast Guard pier due to el Nino, and talked with a group of trans-Pacific rowers with their unique vessels about to embark for Hawaii. Of course, the beauty of the bay as described before creates an exhilarating bike ride. The only negative is that the bike path detours from the Cannery area. We simply walked/rode our bikes there on our return trip.

I was a little unsure about taking a long walk by the sea when this came up as a recommendation. However, I was delighted that I did. It is beautiful and is truly a rewarding experience for all ages. The flat trail runs right along the shore and is both paved and dirt (your choice). You can run, walk, ride bicycles, skateboards etc. There are numerous places for photos and lots to stimulate the senses. I would recommend comfortable shoes, and going before noon as it can get crowded as the day unfolds. There are also a few shops and cafes along the way. This is a must see if you are in Monterey. I can recommend this activity and I will return again.

This is a great recreational trail, with spectacular views of monterey bay. Pictures of the trail provide the real review. I've enjoyed the trail on both on foot and bicycle, and highly recommend either for visitors to monterey.

My wife and I ride our bikes from Marina to Asilomar nearly once/week... we have lived in the area for over 30 years... we have done a great deal of travelling (which is to say, we've been to many amazing places)... and we still pinch ourselves that have daily access to this incredible path along the Monterey Bay. There are other incredible places, to be sure... but none finer than this.

The Pacific Grove shoreline has something for everyone. Runners, walkers on a gently sloped decomposed granite trail and bicycles on asphalt. The trail gets slightly dangerous in Monterey where cyclists and walkers share the asphalt but if you keep alert, you'll be okay. Beautiful Pacific Grove allows you to see harbor seals and otters from this FREE trail. life is Good!

This trail is well maintained and the information provided at each vantage point adds to the enjoyment. It's a dual use trail for cyclists and walkers/joggers but is wide enough to accommodate all.

It was just beautiful to walk along the coast! We got a long walk in and saw amazing scenery! We walked from Fisherman's Wharf where we saw otters and sea lions to Lover's Point.

Must go place event if you have to cut out visiting the Monterey Aquarium. You can find free parking along the trail on the road. Best way is to walk, jog or bike on it. From there, you can get in 17 mile drive on foot or bike without paying the entry fee. I've been there for at least half dozen times and never tired being there.

Take the trail from Fisherman's Wharf toward Pacific Grove. This trail is beautiful and wide enough to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists. The path is lighted after sundown and popular both day and night. Breathe the fresh sea air, listen to the waves' crashing and the seagulls' songs, and view the sea and rocky shores. Odds are, you'll even see a few sea lions bobbing in the water. When the trail turns into Ocean Ave, there will be many beaches with rocks to climb on and tidepools to explore. Enjoy!

The section between Cannery Row and Lover's Point is heavily traveled by tourists (and locals), especially on weekends and holidays. I went on a Monday in the winter, and it was great to have the path nearly to myself most of the way. I started at a bike rental shop near the Marina, there are a lot of other places you can rent bikes along the way. If you desire a little more solitary or "nature" experience, you can head north toward the sand dunes and explore the beach areas.

This is a beautiful walking/jogging trail that is mostly along the seashore. Only negative are some idiot bicyclists.

We followed this trail in both directions from our beachfront vacation rental in Pacific Grove. The beauty of this coastline is simply stunning and never gets old. There is so much to see and the trail is very easy to follow. Great trail for walking, running or biking.

I would have given this a 5 star rating but for the fact that the bikers are very aggressive. It is a recreation trail not just for bikers. The bikers think it was put in for them only. They should have better signs up for tourist so they will walk in the correct direction and on the right side of the trail. Very nice views pretty much everywhere on the trail.

We took a walk on Monterey Peninsula Recreational Trail. There are both scenic views of the Monterey area and the Pacific Ocean. Some limitations were in place due to the virus, but all in all, we enjoyed our walk.

We walked from our RV Park to past Lovers Point and through Pacific Grove to the Lighthouse. Wow! A must-see!!

WE strolled along a lot of this trail. It's level, well paved and interesting. Lots of old buildings, the marina, seals, sea otters, the lighthouse and nearer into town access to restaurants and shops. We had lovely weather and a wonderful stroll

This is a must-d activity in Monterey : hire a bike and cycle along the coastal trail. The views are lovely.

About half of this route is inland through neighborhoods on the peninsula. The sea views are nice, but not worth the price of a movie. I downloaded the free app at the first stop and listened to the audio tour. It wasn't awesome, but I'm glad I did it. If you're thinking of doing the tour, download the free app somewhere with wifi first.

Tremendous views. Walked it, ran it, biked it. Like option running on black top or sandy shoulders. Got in 5 miles. Bikes from adventure.

I am new hiking and my companion is experienced, we both enjoyed ourselves.
I would suggest that you go early if you plan to do this trail on the weekend. Definitely worth the trip.

This recreation trail follows the coastline along the Monterey Bay - it is a long ago conversion of a rail line right-of-way. What a view! Wonderful ocean breezes complement the warm sunshine and stunning environment to inspire nearly anyone to get out and move!

We enjoyed this trail. The only concern is in some places north it isn’t marked well. You have to cross 101 on an overpass, proceed north a bit and cross under 101 again. We were not traveling north. We were parked before this changeover. It was not clearly marked and we turned around and went back to our vehicle. All around Cannery Row everything was marked well and accommodated walkers and bikers with no problems.

My husband and I relaxed on the beach all day perfect weather in November..Sooo refreshing, also watching the people surf the beautiful waves!!👍😁

Wow! This trail was amazing. Maintained to a tee. Great condition for walkers, jogger and bikers. Most of the trail runs right along the water so it's very picturesque. If you go to the right from Cannery Row you will find Lovers a point which was so pretty and if you go to the left the trail, will take you down to some nice sandy beaches with great views of Cannery Row.

My wife and I walked with our two Alaskan Malamutes from Fisherman's Wharf to Lovers Point and back. About 5 miles round trip. This was on a weekday from about 8am to 11am so it was not too crowded and the weather was nice and cool. There are bikes and strollers on the trail but everyone was very courteous and we had no trouble navigating around the occasional slow poke. Part of the trail includes a hard packed dirt path on the ocean side which is where you should walk with a dog to allow bike and other traffic to go by. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking and we even got to see the seals and sea otters playing. We stopped at the Starbucks on Cannery Row on the way back and got some coffee and pastries. There are many places in the shade to stop and have a rest with the dogs. I you bring dogs be sure to pack some water and a bowl for them as we didn't see many places for them to get water. One slight disappointment was that there are no dogs allowed in the park at Lovers Point.

This trail is great for wslling, jogging or cycling. Go early in the morning to avoid crowds most of the year but in winter, like we are now, you can go most any time. The trail is basically the old rail line that went into Monterey so you pass the aquarium, cannery row, downtown, the naval postgraduate school and the dunes along the bay. Be sure to note the plaque where Steinbeck's friend Doc Ricketts died when his car collided with a train.

Locals don't often use this during the heigth of tourist season since many walk or ride right down the middle. It's a multi-use trail and winds along the coastline - from Lovers Point all the way to Castroville. Bikes, dogs, walkers, runners AND those using the pedal powered 'jitneys' all use the trail. Incredible scenery but pay attention!!! It is very easy to be hit by bicycles or wide jitneys if you are in the wrong land and not watching where you are going!! It's a wonderful way to get to parts north (Seaside, Marina, Castroville) without having to ride with the traffic.

It winds to the south through some nice areas (a bit touristy) where you can get food, shop and see some nice coastal homes etc. If you are there for exercise, you can go to the north and have some spectacular views with fewer people on the trail. We rode bikes in both directions and really like the north end that took us into the coastal community of Seaside. You can take a walk on a really scenic beach alongside some beautiful dunes in Seaside. We rented bikes from Adventures by the Sea and they were great! Parking garage is right near to their shop.

Perfect scenery for a morning or evening jaunt. Lovely scenery cool ocean breeze. Only problem certain bottleneck points and the Tour Seg sightseeing expedition a bit reckless.

We began our bike ride in the town of Marina and rode 24 miles to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This is a beautiful ride that has reader boards about the history of Fort Ord and the plants and animals along the coast. The ride winds through the dunes above the beach, past the Monterey pier and Cannery Row. The trail is paved and in really good condition. I recommend this ride trail.

Walked from the Portola Hotel to First Awakenings for breakfast. It was a lovely walk and there were a lot of things going on in the area.

We used to live in Monterey 25 years ago and we loved biking and running along this trail. Now we see new historical markers have been placed along the trail and some nice murals that make it even nicer than before. We actually learned some new things about Monterey on this visit than we knew before when we lived there. Best time to be on the trail is early morning, though, as it got pretty crowded later in the morning and in the afternoons.

This biking/walking trail is all paved and there is limited interaction with vehicles, although in the city area there are a number of well-marked crosswalks you have to ride across. Vehicles were invariably observant of the crosswalk and would stop for you. The trail runs almost to Castroville on the north side, and to Lover's Point in Pacific Grove on the south end. It follows the coast and you enjoy wonderful views of the ocean and marinas and gorgeous flowers and trees. Easy access to places like Fisherman's Wharf, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, etc. from the trail.

Very driveable and very walkable - - MUST DO this if you are in the area - we watched whales from the shore. You will find a public restroom along the way near the local golf course.

The view here is fabulous. Today we were luck some trail volunteers had telescopes and cameras focused on the harbor seals that either had just given birth to pups or were soon going to. There were several hundred in one area with several day old ones with umbilical chords still attached. Other times you can hear the roar of the sea lions. The surf and the coast line in the distance is fantastic on a clear day. remember to put you phone downed you don't run into the runners, walker, and bicyclists.

I walked this portion from Cannery Row to Lover's
Point-what a beautiful outing!! The coastline here is terrific-crashing waves against the rocky shores of Monterey bay. There are plenty of vantage points with seating to take it all in. The trail is well maintained and a very easy walk-the trail is wide enough for all traffic-with no worries.

We walked for miles and were surprised that the severe winter did not do more damage to the trails. We saw many sea lions a couple of sea otters and some baby seal pupts

We love riding our bikes on this trail and then catching a bench to watch the seals on the rocks below or the whales off in the distance. It is a bit crowded so you need to be patient and have time to just chill, but it is worth it. We use this every time we come to Monterey. The views are just stunning!!!

The trails are well-maintained, easy to follow and had beautiful views. Along our walk we saw sea lions, harbor seals, otters, interesting rock formations, surfers, etc.

This is a beautiful train along Monterey Bay. The views of the Bay along with the Ice Plant are stunning. You can park along the trail and walk for quite a while. It is spectacular and it is a relatively easy stroll.

You can do portions of this trail or the whole thing, either way the scenery is just amazing. You run out of words after a while to describe how beautiful this is. I would recommend taking your time and walking portions of this, if possible. The 3 or so miles from the Aquarium up to Asilomar are also worth including in your itinerary. Rain or shine, the views are fabulous.

This trail takes you along and around the Bay. It starts/ends in Pacific Grove and winds all the way to Marina, CA. I have walked from PG to Monterey many times, stopping to enjoy the different tide pools, the 'sights' of the Bay, sometimes otters, and vegetation. And I've biked it many times. It's an easy ride or walk for that matter, level. You can bike/walk to Fisherman's Wharf and stop for a bite or continue on your way to downtown and beyond. It's lovely, clean, and safe.

one of the most relaxing walks you will have in your life try to find a cool month of the year to do it though or bring bottled water

What a beautiful biking trail with Awesome views. Very accessible with nice easy path. Many places to stop and rest and take in the beautiful shoreline with abundant wildlife!

Beautiful walking trail from Monterey to Pacific Grove. The scenery is breathtaking! Great way to meander through Monterey.

Good way to appreciate the bay and its natural habitat, including otters, whales and harbor seals. Walked to Pacific Grove and back.

Rented bicycles in Monterey and rode roundtrip fom Monterey to Pebble Beach. Only caution is to select your bike rental carefully and ride early. The later in the day you ride the more crowded it becomes. Side-by-side tour buses and bikes on 17-Mile Drive can be a bit unsettling.
Otherwise it's a beautiful, relaxing ride. Take your time, a bottle of wine, a camera and enjoy.

Start at the Mariott in old town and see it all! Was through the heart of old town, past the oldest CA monument, and the trail begins...

Basically a paved bike trail that hugs the coast and runs through Cannery Row. Beautiful views and plenty to do and see. You can walk it, or bike it. Bike rentals are a great option.

The trails that run along the coast offer such beautiful views and wildlife one might have a hard time stopping. I was staying near Cannery Row and have always enjoyed walking long Cannery Row past the Monterey Bay Aquarium and joining the coastal trail. One walks along the coast, enjoying the views through Pacific Grove, past Lovers Point and on this last trip I just kept walking until I reached the John Denver Memorial. At that point, it was getting late , my feet hurt and I decided to turn around. Along the way I stopped numerous times to enjoy the sea life (harbor seal moms and pups) and the spectacular views. I even stopped to watch a deer eating on the side of the road. At home , I walk a couple miles a day but that day, between time spent walking in Carmel and along this beautiful trail, I walked 16 miles.
In most parts the trail is wide enough to accommodate bicyclists, walkers, runners, dog walkers and what have you. Most people are extremely courteous and friendly along the way. Past Lovers Point, the trail thins a bit and bicycles are relegated to the street. If you enjoy a good walk, jog or bicycle ride, this trail is tailor made for you.

A bike ride along the coast was great fun. You get the whole mix of busy and quite parts along the way. Saw deer, seals and birds. I wish we had tried the snorkelling at Lovers' Point.

This trail runs between Monterey Bay Marina area and Cannery Row. It is a wide paved trail that allows for biking, walking, jogging, pets, scooters... you name it! There is a place in Cannery Row where you can rent bikes for one or for a family and you often see the bikers on the trail. It is wide enough that everyone can use it easily no matter their speed. Along the trail there are plaques posted noting historical events and sights in the area, and there are views of the marina, and the Monterey Bay water area with seals, birds, sail boats, kayaks. There are picnic tables and benches along the way to sit and enjoy a lunch or just relax. There are also plenty of grassy areas to run your dogs or your kids. It is always a popular trail and area! Parking can be difficult and if the lots nearby are full, check out the parking garages - there is a trolley that gives free rides to Cannery Row.

We love when we visit cities and they have great running paths. We were very happy with the Monterey Peninsula trail. We walked a large portion of it down to Fisherman's Wharf one day and then ran it the next morning just past Lover's Point. The views of the sunrise in the morning were fantastic. The path was well marked and people did a fairly decent job of staying in their lines / signaling when passing others. Must do if you're in the Monterey area.

I only got to ride about 10 miles of this trail. It follows the shoreline and offers some beautiful scenic views. The trail is well marked and easy to navigate. My only complaint is it seems to be a magnet for homeless people like so many other bicycle trails.

Another great coastal drive and this one is free / no entry free. Takes you around Monterey and Pacific Grove. Coastline, waterscapes, dunes, forests - it has it all to be enjoyed!

A nicely paved, clean trail perfect for bicyclers, hikers and other sports enthusiasts. (Joggers, in-line skaters etc). Dog walkers too.

We started early and didn't want to stop-ever. So many places with benches and views didn't have time to get tired

I have been hit on the Rec Trail by crazy zooming bicyclist. Put me in physical therapy for months on end. I love the Rec Trail, but Monterey really needs to have separate lanes for walkers and bikers, as it is very unsafe.

Nice coast, especially with the sun, because here you go from sun to cloudy in a moment!
Anyway interesting, to see!

We actually were able to walk on this trail for a short time in between Old Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row which I would highly recommend. Not only does it have a lot of good history, and picnic benches and tables, for a picnic, one can also just go out on the rocks close to shore and watch all of the wildlife. We actually saw seals, otters (2 mothers with their babies) feeding, pelicans, starfishes, and other aquatic birds. One can also see the left-overs of history back almost a century ago plus there are places to rent bikes, or other modes of transportation if one doesn't feel like walking.

Walked from Pacific Grove to the Aquarium and Cannery Row. Great walking and biking trail, great views, saw otters in the Bay and Sea Lions on the beach. Great place for a casual stroll or jogging/biking if your so inclined.

Went for an morning weekday jog from my hotel a block away. Saw people walking, biking, jogging... Good trail with some very good views of harbor and bay. Nice and wide so everyone can co exist (bike, walkers, joggers)

We walked along this busy trail from Pacific Grove (Lover's Point) to the Monterey Aquarium. It took us about 45 minutes at a very leisurely pace with many stops to look at sea birds and sea lions and otters. The views of the coastline are great - the weather was sunny but also quite windy. We took a shorter way back to Pacific Grove walking along Lighthouse.

The path is beautiful and well-kept... definitely a must for anyone passing through and a lovely way to explore Monterey's scenery.

This is a lovely bike/hike trail which follows the monterey bay. I hiked from the plaza in monterey to Lovers Point in Pacific Grove and it was a beautiful sunrise walk.

This is a great way to see the Monterey peninsula. The paved path skirts the ocean with stop offs at the wharf, acquarium, cannery row, etc. We walked, but others cycled, skated, jogged, etc.

Whether by walking, bicycle, skate board, or just out with the dog, this paved trail is perfect for getting out along the ocean in Monterey. Long walks are pleasant, the trail is never crowded, and you can get in all of the distance you want in a beautiful place. A special trail that you won't forget, make it a part of your Monterey visit!

So serene, We loved driving and checking out the area. Very lovely and peaceful Monterey is so pretty

The Monterey peninsula recreational trail is a great place to walk. It parallels the bay with great views.

Biking on the Monterey Peninsula Trail was one of our highlights in visiting the area. The scenery is amazing! The trail is well maintained and good for biking, running and walking. There are plenty of things to see along the way from lovely homes that overlook the water to the cormorants and other sea birds that sunbathe on the rocks. There were also a lot of sea lions in various areas of the trail. Lots of interesting places to stop and take pictures.

My husband and I ride this trail often on our bicycles. You can park in the small beach parking lot behind Costco in Seaside and take your bike up to the trail. The ups and downs of the asphalt trail through the dunes can be challenging for less energetic riders, but I can do it using the gears a lot. Breathtaking views! For a shorter ride, park across from the Naval Post Graduate School on Del Monte in Monterey in the Eucalyptus grove. The ride is very enjoyable with lots to see going past the Wharf, though parks with views of sea mammals and you can go through Cannery Row past the Monterey Aquarium and go all the way to Pacific Grove on a super easy ride without vehicle traffic. Love it!

We walk on this every time we come to Monterey! It gives easy access to several beaches as well as a trail away from cars. We use this trail to walk down to Pacific Grove as well as to downtown Monterey.

I ran on this and it was amazing. Best part of my trip. The sun was glorious, the view incredible. The trail is great, well marked and takes you through parts of town and next to the shore. Really perfect.

Great trail with enough space for joggers, bikers, and people walking at their own pace and beautiful views. Love to walk my dogs here and take them down to the little beaches along the way. If you come in the spring, you can see the mother otters on the beach with their pups!

I think the recreation trail has a lot of potential, but is made dangerous by pedestrians and drivers alike who don't pay attention to their surroundings. Pedestrians should stay to the right at all times to avoid cyclists, and there should be stop signs for cars at all intersections with a main road. There have been many times when I was cycling and a pedestrian suddenly turned and started to cross the path without looking around first, and pedestrians often walk in the wrong lane and don't allow room for others to pass through. Drivers also often go right through the crosswalks without even bothering to look to see if anyone is about to cross. I would honestly feel safer riding on the main road than on the recreation trail between Lover's Point and Fisherman's Wharf. Once you get out past Fisherman's Wharf, the foot traffic dies down and you can enjoy a peaceful and challenging bike ride all the way to Castroville.

Great free way to see some animal life and beautiful scenery. Make sure especially to go down the walking path at breakwater cove where u can get pretty up close with sea lions and even star fish. This will take you right into cannery row and to the aquarium and if you keep going to the end you will get to see beautiful Lovers Point. Great way to spend a day get some exercise in a fun way.

We were in Monterey as a stop on our cruise, and it was so easy to get on the trail. We took it first to get to Cannery Row, and it was well-maintained and easily walked all the way. So many things to see along the way - loved the seals and the variety of bird-life in the harbour! We came back and took it the opposite way from the place where the ship tendered, and enjoyed some views of the beach. A less traveled path by tourists, but a good place to walk or run.

This is a lovely paved walk with wonderful sights along the way. We really enjoyed it and highly recommend.

I made my spouce drive me around this area before leaving town because i wanted to see the ocean from Monterey. I recommend the tip of this peninsula because it doesnt cost money like the seventeen mile drive. There is plenty of parking and view spots. Its not as breathtaking as the 17mile but its quick and free.

This is a beautiful, busy trail with easy access to downtown. Much of it is suitable for people of varying abilities or bikes. We had fun geocaching along it as well. Parts of it can be crowded, but most everyone is happily enjoying their time off...

Walk or bike - ideal for both. Wonderful views and regular notices explaining history. Much better explanations of Monterey history than on Cannery Row! Highly recommended

If you are looking for a place to run with out stoplights on every corner and somewhere you can't get to lost, this is the place.

I have always loved coming to Monterey. I especially when it comes to going along the Monterey Peninula Recreational Trail. The view from the road or on the trail is priceless. There's the ocean in all its glory. Each time you come there, its always somehow different -- but in a good way. Smell that wonderful sea air, listen to the seagulls flying above you as they talk in their unique way. Look for the sea otters and if you're really lucky, the whales off-shore. Best thing is to just find a spot and sit down and listen to the ocean talk to you. Believe me when I say your blood pressure will drop to a level where you feel so calm and cool you'll wonder why you didn't come here sooner.

Arrived at the sercurity gate from Monterey paid entry of $10 travelled through the estate passing Fauna and Fiona many trees and upmarket homes.4 x golf course and couple of hotels.
existing at the Carmel by the sea.
worth a drive must visit Carmel with lovely beaches.

This is a mus see in the Montrey Bay. Relaxing and fun. Plenty to see including wildlife. I highly advise going anytime. Take your camera.

Depending on your perspective, you might enjoy a bike rental to cover more ground, or you might not enjoy the bike renters whizzing past. There's plenty of nature to enjoy either way, just be cautious of the opposites (peds/pedals) whether you're riding or walking.

We walked from Fishermans Wharf to Cannery Row, its a flat easy walk taking in the bay and the sights. We saw seal's on the rocks sunbathing. Lots to see, a must do if in Monterey.

Original plan was to walk around the coast to Carmel but ran out of steam at Pebble Beach,
The path is easy to follow and mostly hugged the coast so you get to enjoy the wildlife and beautiful scenery with the sound of the sea as an accompaniment. Path is virtually flat the whole way so suitable for most fitness levels. I followed the bike path at the end to get to Pebble Beach.
Make sure to carry water as there was virtually nowhere on the path that sold food or drinks

Wonderful path to walk down to Fisherman's Wharf and beyond I'm sure, even though that's as far as we walked. Be aware the bike riders and skate riders move fast. Keep an eye out. Saw lots of seals.

We did that trail whit my daughter she is 5 years old. It’s a perfect place to go in family . Nice sight ! You have to be alert because a lot of people walk in that trail .

Wife and I walked much of the trail and one evening drove car to watch sunset. Lots of people parking to watch the sunset so if that's your plan leave early to pick your spot. Take a water bottle as not lots of places to grab a drink after you pass lovers point

If you are in Monterey, don't miss walking the rec trail! You can take it all the way from Fisherman's Wharf to Cannery Row and the Aquarium but don't miss the trail from the Aquarium out to Pacific Grove. The walk is never the same twice with lots of benches to rest on when you get tired.

The trail is an excellent place for all kinds of activities, We stayed nearby in Pacific Grove an rented bikes to ride the path to Cannery Row and beyond. Another day I used it to walk to the aquarium. You can extend your bike ride by continuing on Ocean View Drive in PG.

We were visiting The Old Fisherman's Wharf and decided to take a walk on the Recreational Trail. Beautiful views of the bay and a nice path for walking, biking or pushing a stroller. Highly recommend!

You walk along the shore , enjoying sea air, the sound and feel of the ocean. Sea birds, sea mammals are all about. It's a relaxing wonderful place to spend some time.

Great way to spend a day in Monterey. We started at the aquarium and headed east until we got to Asilomar Beach. Views are awesome, loads of waves and different vistas. Sea otters a plenty and a cove of harbour seals.

This was a great trail perfect for long walks or runs while visiting. It started off in the central and went through the town along coast. It had great views and could see the seals hanging out in the water by the edge.

Very enjoyable! We were staying in Pacific Grove and took this path to walk to Cannery Row a few times. It is both scenic and safe, with plenty of others walking, jogging, and cycling along. At night we ubered around, so I can't comment on anything after sunset.

For the most part, it is a good trail for biking. But, it does not go very far before it becomes nothing more than a sometimes-marked bike lane on the side of a two-lane road. We were going to ride to Pebble Beach, but it became somewhat dangerous due to the narrow road and distracted drivers.

This is a beautifully designed and well-maintained path for walking and biking. It is wide enough that walkers and cyclists do not interfere with one another, and it stays well away from traffic. Most importantly, it winds along one of the most breathtaking coasts in the world! There is easy access from bike rental shops as well. Consider bringing a water bottle, snacks and a camera.

We rented a bike and enjoyed a family ride down the path. It's very safe, not too busy, and a great way to see Monterey!

As stated in other reviews, the address is bad. GPS took us in circles. We could see it from the highway. It’s a long trail that goes for miles. No ocean views from our vantage point.

Great for power walking or just trolling. Bike riding is recommended, too. There is a view of the bay with the boats of every description, along with the back end of the wharf, displayig a rainbow of colors. On a windy day, there are the captivating white caps.
All in all it is calming and exciting at the same time.

With beautiful views of the Monterey peninsula. I wasn't too keen on sharing the trail with bicycles, since you had to be constantly on guard, detracting from enjoying all the sights.

This is one of my absolute favorite things to do in Monterey. I'm never bored on a run - there's always something new to see. My absolute favorite memory is the first time my 4-year old ran with me instead of in the stroller. Other runners on the trail cheered him on the entire way. All paces are welcome here; Monterey at its best!

My son did this a couple of mornings. Great views and access to the dunes. Goes all the way to the wharf area.

We rode about 20 miles on the trail and it was a fun experience. The trail is flat, wide, paved and the views are lovely. Lover's Point in Pacific Grove is a great place for lunch if you pack one.
We crossed a few streets but only shared the road near Lover's Point. It is a lovely trail and I highly recommend riding parts or all according to your stamina. Take lots of pictures...so beautiful!

We ran this trail and it was great. The paths are wide enough to make it easy to work with the walkers and bike riders and the views are phenomenal.

This part of the Monterey Peninsula is one of the most amazing trails you could ever encounter. I could spend hours and hours on this trail watching people, wildlife, the crashing waves and the epic views.

Scenic, peaceful, beautiful- my happy place. I try to get in a walk from Lover’s Point to Cannery Row or Fisherman’s Wharf and back 3-4 times a week. Keeps me balanced and soothes my soul!

We parked at Fishermans Wharf, which saved a slow drag in traffic up to Cannery Row, and then walked up the trail. Great idea it’s a leisurely walk along the coast line with all the benefits of wildlife and views. Watch out for the cyclists as the path is shared.

There are a number of short or featured walks along the Recreational Trail that stretches for miles along the central coast. My favorite section of the trial takes about 15 minutes (oneway) to stroll along a paved pathway stretching between the Aquarium and the beach/park @ Lover's point. Along the way, walkers will encounter vista views of the Monterey Bay and a variety of wild life to include sea lions, otters, shore birds along with a controversial pair of breaching whales sculpted from tree trunks.
Better yet, if visiting the Aquarium, consider parking near Lover's Point and walking along the trail to the Aquarium. Not only will you enjoy the walk and the views but you will also avoid having to pay $10+ for parking closer to the Aquarium.

This is a great way to experience Monterey. It is for walking and biking. Easy way to get from the Aquarium down to the Wharf, which I highly recommend!

This is one of the best of California. It's great for locals and tourists. The trail is wonderful for walking or bicycling. I come for the amazing geology.

This is a great trail to bike and walk. We rented bikes and rode for about an hour and half since we had to checkout of our hotel. The trail is great for scenery and we were able to see Harbor seals on the beach waiting to give birth. There was also a baby seal there that had been born the day before. The trail is a little confusing when you get to Love Park. We weren't sure where to go from there, so turned around since we didn't have much time.

Passing by the Old Wharf and continuing along up the hill towards Cannery Row, this pleasant and relaxing walk is anything but boring. The activities taking place in the Bay and on the trail (as well as stopping to view the public sculptures), all will engage the walker on so many levels. On a good-weather day, there is nothing better than taking this walk. Plan for a long day as Pacific Grove's quaint downtown requires the extra time.

Great trail hugging Monterey Bay. Very scenic! Walked several times along it and saw plenty of seals, sea lions, sea otters and tone of birds! Very clean trail too! Seats to relax on along the way to just enjoy the beautiful view!

No pressure her, just a pleasant place to stroll and enjoy the scenery. The grounds are well maintained and litter free thanks to the volunteers who police the walks. Highly recommended for all to enjoy.

Family and I came here over around the 4th July weekend after visiting the aquarium.
Embarrassingly this was the first time that I've been to this trail despite visiting Monterey Cannery row area many times over the decades. I found the trail after looking for new things to do at Monterey. We did not walk the entire stretch of the trail. We started our walk on David Ave. closed to the aquarium, and walk about 1 to 1.5 mile up North toward Lovers' Point. We saw many seals along the beach, otter and of course an amazing view of the coastline.
Suggestions for those that want to walk here:
1) Its likely obvious, bring a jacket. It gets cold and windy(even on a summer day in Monterey) especially on a cloudy day
2) Careful about the bikes. Bikers use the pave trails and some go off the pavement and ride on where the pedestrians walk.
3) Along the coast, you can go off the trail and go to more rocky areas. Careful about taking selfies, don't be a statistic and ruin your holiday.

This is a great trail to enjoy the scenic view's and enjoy the sunshine. We enjoyed viewing the Victorian mansions and the shopping in Cannery Row. The trail is great for biking, walking and just taking in the view.

Walk the trail, sit a while, listen to the waves and smell the fresh seawater. The views are something you'll never forget

It can take you from Pacific Grove, Lovers Point, all the way to Ft. Ord park at the north end.
It has great views of the Bay as you walk or ride or run along. You might want to watch out for the local bikers. They can get kinda testy in crtain areas. It gets crowded by the wharf and Cannery Row area. The further north you go the less crowded it gets. So if you are looking to run or ride away from the crowd head north. South if you are in no hurry and want to shop or eat.

This is a fantastic place to get your exercise before or after the Monterey Bay Aquarium! Walk along the trail and say hi to the others, pet the dogs, look ot over the ocean, watch the seals sunbathing on the beach, and watch the sea gulls flying! Get the fresh air and sunshine, to complete your day!

Walking along the shoreline is a great way to get some fresh air and see the wildlife and beautiful scenery. Absolutely beautiful!

This is an excellent trail with many wildlife like seals, sea lion, birds. Start at lovers' point. It is a great place to walk or to rent a bike.

The trail is impressive! It follows the impressive coastline, goes through Cannery Row, leads you directly to the Aquarium. It is a model for other cities.

Have the time to enjoy all the scenic views. Can be very peaceful, if that is what you are looking for when there! Have a good camera ready to take the pictures you will look at as often as possible!

This trail is so easy to walk, and so beautiful! Lots of places to sit if you get a bit tired. Beautiful views of Monterey Bay, and lots of green grass and large trees abound this scenic trail. This is my favorite place to go walking when I visit lovely Monterey!

My wife and I jogged on this trail a couple mornings on our vacation. It is well maintained and at no time did we not feel safe. There were plenty of other joggers, walkers and cyclists on the path.

I loved the views this park had to offer, lots of little critters on the trail and on the beach. Just remember to be careful on the rocks with algae they are extremely slippery.

This is one of my favorite rides. I usually ride from Monterey to Marina and back. It is a pretty easy ride with a few small hills. Sometimes it gets windy though. Also, I have encountered a few belligerent homeless guys on the trail between Seaside and Ft Ord.

This area is fun. Cannery Row. Great water views and decent night life (there on a Saturday) with good band at McFlys. Hotel room was spotless. fireplace and romantic lounge chairs in room. Very comfortable bed with many plush pillows! Excelle We will be back!nt continental plus breakfast delivered to your room at your selected time!

If you don’t think there is a magic to the beauty of Monterey look at the faces of the people walking the Peninsula Trail or resting on the many benches along the way. The trail extends about 3 miles along the shoreline and can be hiked in chunks making the experience easily accessible to all levels of hikers and strollers. Be sure to have a camera handy in case you stumble on a sea lion, otter, or flock of cormorants. Our favorite is Lovers Point

After enjoying the aquarium for the afternoon, my family drove back to our hotel in Pacific Grove, but I decided to walk the trail along the boulevard. The first thing I saw on the south side of the Hopkins Marine Station was a beach filled with dozens of harbor seals. I snapped some photos and walked, admiring the rock formations along the coast and the views out to see and up and down the coast. It was a great walk along a beautiful shoreline with lots of interesting things to see. Definitely worth at least a drive by when you are in Monterey or Pacific Grove, but ideally you can spend an hour or so taking your time along the path and really admiring the beauty of this shoreline.

Great trail from the new fishermans wharf out to lovers point. Out past lovers point the trail ends for bikes and becomes a walking trail. You have to ride on the road from there. Great views and safe with lots of people on the trail. When you go past the new fishermans wharf it becomes less of a sight seeing trail as it goes through a Loren residential area. Still great and safe place to ride instead of the road.

We rented a bike for 6 and rode from cannery row to lovers point. My little one and teenagers loved it.

When visiting Salinas make the effort to ride the local trolley! It isn't only in San Francisco anymore! I loved riding through the town and seeing a variety of the local area and had a great driver, Shannon, who was very sweet! The price is low and the experience was unforgettable, a must do in Salinas!

This is a lovely, lovely trail to walk along or cycle. Great views. Opportunity to see otters, seals, birds. I even saw a hump back whale while watching the surf!!

Took the bus from Lighthouse Avenue to Asilomar State Beach (got off at the Asilomar/Sunset stop) and walked the five miles along the coast back to Cannery Row. Lovely trail! Very breezy on the ocean side, not much shade, but an easy walk with plenty of benches along the way

This is basically a long coastal walk, or bike ride, along Monterey Bay, with all kinds of stops along the way. While it's much more accessible than an equivalent coastal walk in the UK, for example, there is variation and even some access to tourist attractions e.g. Monterey Bay Aquarium, the touristy shops of Cannery Row etc. The trail continues past although I basically cut out at the Aquarium and went to the town of Pacific Grove for lunch. It's a beautiful walk and you can take it at your own speed.

If you are staying in or near downtown Monterey, you should walk along the coastal trail. You'll be rewarded with terrific views and maybe catch some sea lions or whales along the way.

Came here at sunset and ended up walking five miles because the scenery was so enthralling! A great way to start or end the day in Monterrey. Parking lots every couple of miles so you don't have to walk much at all if you prefer.

Tired of trying to plow your way through all the tourists on Cannery Row? Just a quick block over and you're on this wonderful recreational trail. If you're wanting some exercise and the ability to enjoy the views without all the congestion, this is an ideal place to stretch your legs. Plus our hotel had back card key access which made it perfect.

The rec trail offers panoramic views of the ocean, the wharf, beautiful homes in Pacific Grove, etc. It can get a little crowded at times, so if you're running, be prepared to do a lot of weaving and dodging!
In Sacramento, one runs or walks against the flow of bikes. Here, everybody travels in the same direction. That takes some getting used to and is a little unnerving at first.

If you want to take a quick bike ride or a leisurely walk, this is the place to go when in Monterey. Great people watching- evryone enjoing themselves on this trail along the ocean.

This is an old railroad grade, so it is not on the road. You can ride from Castroville to Pebble Beach with beautiful views. The trail can get crowded in Pacific Grove with walkers and bikers

The trail is quite extensive with beautiful views to boot. Walk it, bike it, run it. Many people walk their dogs here, and of course, you can also see cute seals and seabirds.

I have been going to this trail for nearly 30 years or longer. Me and my son would roller blade and play roller hockey there, ride our bikes, walk and so on. Great place to get exersise and just walk and talk. Have fun.

We started at Lovers Point and walked along the coast. The views were spectacular. Lots of wildlife and ocean scapes to enjoy.

We spent a lovely weekend in Monterey and walked this trail on Sunday after seeing the aquarium on Saturday. Lovely views of the ocean and smell of ocean air.

Our hotel gave us free cruiser bikes and we went twice during our vacation. The path is eighteen miles long from the lighthouse in Seaside to the dunes and Castroville the other way. There are lines so folks know to stick to one side each way making it safe. It is flat so perfect for cruiser bikes with few gears. We had locks so stroked and saw the sights. Great way to get around as it goes past Cannery Row and Old Fisherman’s Warf.

Travel for miles, or just a few yards, via walking, running, biking, whether you want peaceful stroll or high energy workout, it is perfect. Gorgeous scenery and great people watching, from Monterey through Pacific Grove. You can start at Fishermans Wharf, continue at Cannery Row, turn up a block at the Aquarium, and continue on to Asilomar Beach. One of the most beautiful urban paths in the world

We found a free 2-hour parking spot along Cannery Row and walked the section towards Fisherman’s Wharf. There’s a memorial to the sardine divers who worked the underwater pipe systems that sucked the fish into the canneries. Nicely paved and several spots to sit or picnic along the way. There’s even a plaque for the first tree under which the Spanish “founded” Monterey. The whole thing is 18 miles so you have plenty of stretches to walk. Just watch out for bikes!

We walked the trail from San Carlos Beach to Fisherman's Wharf, and there must have been over a thousand sea lions on the weekend we happened to be there. I asked a ranger who said that this many sea lions was not normal. The ocean was filled with barking sea lions and just about every space on the beach, rocks, stairs, etc., was filled with sea lions. One was even laying down on the side walk where everyone was walking. It was a magical sight. While, as the ranger said, it is rare that there are this many sea lions, I imagine there are still plenty to see at any other time, as well. If you are there, you may also want to walk down the Coast Guard Pier (near San Carlos Beach) to also see sea lions. Note: The walk itself is easy, paved and mostly flat. There are benches and tables along the way.

This was a great trail to run and bike on as it overlooks the water most of the way. Cuts right through Cannery Row and Old Monterey. Seamed clean and well policed for safety.

This is one of the best biking and walking trails easily accessible to everyone. Never a dull moment watching the activities of the Monterey Bay and vistas it offers.

Rented bikes in downtown Monterey and took the recreational trail. It is nice and flat, so it is an easy, enjoyable ride. When you reach Pacific Grove, you have to ride along the street for a fair distance, so something to keep in mind if you have young children. The scenery along the trail is absolutely beautiful!!

You can walk, run, or bike it. At 18 miles long from Pacific Grove to Castorville, you can access it from anywhere but the area between the Naval Post Graduate School and the Monterey Aquarium is probably the most fun if you are a casual walker.

I know we did a baby version of the length of the trail but we just wanted to get a small walk in and also the experience. It was a very enjoyable walk and we loved it. We could have easily gone much farther but then we would have had to walk double that length to retrieve the car. In any case, if you like trails and hikes, this is the spot for you. If you are worried about conditioning, I did 2 miles easily and it was a piece of cake and I did it in Crocs.

We live in Monterey and ride the trail almost daily. One can start at Lover's Point and rie all the way to Marina. It's beautiful and safe. As you ride past Fort Ord the are connecting paths that let you explore old shooting ranges. There are plenty of places to stop and eat or explore the coastal towns.

Went a couple miles each way from Cannery Row area. Paved, well maintained. Felt safe. Really glad it was close to our hotel.

Loved the recreational trail in Monterey. We walked/ biked trail by Pacific Grove. Trail has benches that you can sit and watch beautiful sunsets.

We used this route a lot during our stay. We cycled on it and walked on it, good space to use and well placed to find your way around .

Trail is relatively easy for all ages. Goes from The south edge of Seaside to well beyond Cannery Row. This is the very best way to get some exercise, watch people, eat and enjoy all that Monterey is.

We walked on this trail from cannery row to lover's point. It was a nice, easy walk with beautiful water views. We saw seals and sea otters. This would be great on a bike as you could go much further. We were here on a weekday in October and it wasn't too crowded. There aren't many free things to do in this area, so this was a nice break on the wallet!

I came here with my work colleague and we had the most amazing conversation and meal together after a long conference. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was amazing too. The attention to detail when you place your order was incredible, nothing was out of place. I can’t imagine going anywhere else.

Absolutely beautiful. Been talk about nationally and is a hit for those who know. Birds, sea lions, otters, flowers. really a great day trip.

This trail is great. It span all across Monterey and into Marina and if you go the other way it will take you all the way into Asilomar. Great for walking along the coast line. If you bike just beware of the heavy foot traffic.

I usually walk from the parking lot at fisherman's wharf to Pacific Grove. You have bicycles, runners, people strolling or with strollers. There is a yellow painted strip down the middle and you should have that to the left as you walk, run, bike or whatever. There are benches and picnic tables at scenic spots along the way as well as bars, restaurants and shops. You can safely bike from north of Monterey to below Carmel and Pebble Beach.

Used the trail several times during our visit to Monterey. So well maintained and beautiful scenery all along the way.

You can ride your bike all the way to Castroville if you head North or to Asilomar if you head South. Paved trail but watch for pedestrians when you ride through Cannery Row and by the Wharf.

22 mile long trail that has a few intersections with traffic but other all provides a very nice off street experience for walking, running or biking. Runs along both coastal and inland areas. Generally well kept.

We spent the day driving along the coast seeing the sites. We saw magnificent view after magnificent view and stopped constantly to take pictures of them. I can’t even name them all. We went South out of Monterey.

Amazing spot to enjoy the morning and walk or bike along the coast. A must do while you are in this area!! Just gorgeous!

Monterey is one of the most beautiful places in California. Spend an hour walking, biking or jogging on this trail and see Otters, seagulls, seals and sea lions. There's nothing like it.

The trail is really a gem. It's much longer than the section we walked but you can go from Monterey (further north, if you like) all the way to Pacific Grove. It hugs the coast so it twists and turns along the way. You'll find walkers, joggers, bicyclists, families and lots of people. No need to walk on the road. You can pass the old Fisherman's Warf, kayaking (multiple options), old Cannery Row, the Aquarium, and other attractions. Recommended to walk at least a portion of it.

One of the best free deals on the coast, ocean views along most of the trail, while the trail is wide enough to accommodate both bikers, joggers, and walkers.

I returned and did the trail again. You can stroll from town to town, admiring the spectacular views of the bay and enjoying the amazing trees and flowers. The longer you walk the more you will enjoy.

We walked and biked the trail and loved the Ocean views. We saw so much sea life every day, all along the trail. Sea Lions, sea otters, a whale, harbor seals, and yes plenty of birds! Enjoy!

There is a 29+mile long paved path for walking, jogging and biking. Staying in Monterey is was very easy to pick up the trail and walk along the shore line passed Pacific grove all the way to the Lighthouse and Spanish Bay Beautiful and very busy with locals and bikers. Would recommend renting bikes or at least send a couple hours on this. Several of the "Scenic Overlooks" have been closed due to the bad weather/erosion that has taken place.

Wife, daughter, and I walked from El Estero Park to the Aquarium. Always peaceful and beautiful. Great views of the Bay and on clear days you can see up the coast to Moss Landing and sometimes even Santa Cruz. Always cool to see the harbor seals and otters swimming around. Actual path is in great shape and has lots of space.

If you are in the area, you must visit this park - do not miss it! There are the most gorgeous vistas with easy walking paths throughout the reserve. There are also amenities (toilets) so not to worry. The "hiking" is very easy with paths that lead all over. If you want to see every area, plan to spend about 3 hours. Highly recommended.

We rented two bikes and biked all along the coast. We started at the Fisherman's Wharf and headed towards Lover's point and went all the way to oldest operating lighthouse in the west coast. They do not accept credit card and charge $2 to enter. Unfortunately, we were not carrying cash so did not have the opportunity to go in. The whole ride om the coast was amazing!!! The waters are very clear in many places with breathtaking views. It took us close to two hours on the roundtrip with a couple of stops. I would recommend giving yourself more time to really enjoy every view. Definitely going back to Monterrey since there were too many things we were not able to do.

This is a great trail for a run. The scenery cannot be beat. The trail is best in the early morning hours because it is mostly empty. It gets more crowded during the day. This trail runs along Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row, the Aquarium and goes all the way to the 17-mile drive I think. One of my favorite places to run.

We walked from Fishermans wharf to Cannery Row and back. It was a delightful walk along the shore side . An easy walk.

A nice, paved trail through Monterey and out along the coast. Take your time and see wonderful sights. Coastline, wildlife and more. You can walk for quite a way if you want - or take a shorter walk, if you prefer.
There are many joggers and bikers, so larger groups may not be advisable.

Some of the world's most stunning scenery, to include watching the sea lions basking on the rocks in the sun. Make sure you get out and walk, don't drive!

Do not miss this experience. A fantastic way to enjoy the Monterey Bay and wildlife. The trail is well marked with educational information about the wildlife and history. You can walk from Monterey to Pacific Grove without having to deal with traffic.

This is a great way to walk in Monterey and not have to worry about car traffic. Nice way to get to Old Fisherman's Wharf

Best on a weekday; best from Monterey to Fort Ord Dunes State Park almost any day; in Cannery Row area, great food at Wave Street Cafe (right on the trail..... used to be called Trailside Cafe)

Great biking/walking trail accessible to all. Check out the views and the tide pools. You won't want to stop.

I loved being able to go slow and cover allot of ground by using a Bike. I rented from Bay Bikes - $26 for 3.5 hours, you can't beat the cost.

Monterey Bay. Seals on the beach (but safely behind a fence at Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station). Seals and otters in the water. Trees whipped into fantastic shapes by Pacific breezes. Sea birds galore. Craggy coastline. Crashing waves. Plenty of room for walkers, runners, strollers, and bikers. If you are resourceful and time it right, you can even find free parking nearby. If not, meter rates are very reasonable. Make sure you supplement a trip to Cannery Row/the world-famous Aquarium with a stroll on this trail. You'd missing *a lot* if you skipped it.

We rented bikes and rode about 2 miles on the trail. It was easy riding and extremely beautiful. Best bike ride I have ever had because to the right was the stunning coast. If you like to run, or even just take a walk, this is a must see in Monterey.

This trail is really pretty and offers stunning views. We went for a run here for sunset and it was magical.

What a wonderful place for a bike ride. Put about 7 miles on our bikes but wish we could have done more. Basically a flat trail so good for beginners with lots of beautiful scenery. Lots of stops along the way with beautiful scenery so bring your camera and binoculars. A great bike ride with the only downside being that it gets a bit congested between the wharf and the aquarium.

Leave the aquarium and head up the hill north. There are plenty of stops to park your car. Beautiful views. Many even much better than the 17 mile drive and it's free. It ends up at one entrance to the 17 mile drive which is worth the $10.25 cash.

We walked the trail from Fisherman's Wharf all the way to Lover's Point and it was such a wonderful experience. The recreational trail is next to the ocean and it was such a nice walk on a nice sunny day. There are plenty of lovely things to see and there are plenty walkers, runners, and bikers around. It was bout 4 miles according to my Apple Watch for a round trip from Fisherman's Wharf to Lover's point and back.

It is great that the cities of Pacific Grove and Monterey came together to create this walking/biking trail right along the bay. It makes accessing pretty much all of the attractions very easy.
There are great views of the bay and its assorted wildlife - often at very close distances. Several beaches are right off the trail. I believe it runs for about 18 miles, but we only walked 3 of it between Pacific Grove and Old Fisherman's Wharf. Lots of picnic tables, benches, and side parks to pause at. Very clean and well kept. Very pleasant.

The MPRT follows the old SP right-of-way from Castroville to Pacific Grove. This review covers only the area through Cannery Row and Pt. Cabrillo. It has always been nostalgic for me to walk the old SP right-of-way near the MBAQ, and think about Doc Ricketts, who was run down by an SP freight train at one on the grade crossings here. After leaving the Aquarium this visit, we turned south along the Trail, and walked past Hopkins Marine Station to the viewing area in the lee of Pt. Cabrillo. There were several dozen harbor seals hauled up on the beach there, including a number of newly-born pups. It was a great thing to watch.

This is the best trail I've ever been on. Its so fun and so much to see it doesn't feel like exercise! We prefer to bike it but its a great walk or run. It can be a little crowded in some stretches through cannery row and the wharf with tourists. Beware of clueless people who either have no idea they are on a busy path or dont care.
So if you use it be courteous and aware of others so all can have fun.

This has the amazing views along the water. It is paved so good for handicapped access. Please be aware of bicycles because it is a shared path. We saw otters, seals, and crashing surf.Beautiful! Get out of your car and take a walk. This path is a pleasure,so enjoy!

Excellent and well paved trail. If you are looking for some exercise - walking, biking, or running, definitely take this trail. It's an easy and enjoyable walk to Cannery Row from the Fisherman's Wharf area.

Absolutely smashing views and worth all the time. This is our favorite to stay away from crowds. You can spend the whole day on the trail.

I wish every city made such beautiful trails to see the ocean and homes along the trail. It is very scenic with gorgeous views of the bay as wildlife along the Monterey Bay. I've seen otters, seals and seabirds on my walks. Some of the nicest homes are across the street with great architectural interest. Great way to kill some time and get your exercise in!

I have been visiting this recreational trail since the 80s and have always liked the views of the coves and to walk out on the rocks to see the tide pools. We were there on a sunny day in April and saw otters in the surf.

Hired bikes and cycled along the route about 5-6 miles to the lighthouse . Lovely coastline views sea life and nice coastal houses too. Nice little beach on the way and stopped for icecream and a drink .a great way to spend a couple of hours .

A safe and scenic 15 minute walk between Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row along the coastline. Seals, sea lions and sea otters can all be seen en route. We would have liked to have hired bicycles of we had more time.

We enjoyed this ride but we found the signage to be lacking. Once on the right trail we rode along thru the sand dunes heading north. The best way to go I our opinion is to cut over in to the trail that runs through Fort Ord. It follows the recreational trail but is farther from the highway and much more interesting. We turned back at the north end of the Fort trail. .

In July I spent a wonderful Saturday afternoon biking this trail. I loved it so much, I was constantly snapping photos, the views are so breathtaking. When you get past the beach area it's none too crowded either. I spent four hours going up and down the trail, from Lovers Park to Fort Ord Dunes Park. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I bike or walk here daily during our stay. It is just beautiful and one does not need to watch out for automobiles.

It stretches along the coast of Monterey from Fisherman's Wharf all the way through Pacific Grove Beach and Lover's Point. Incredibly scenic views to be viewed along your walk with the Pacific Ocena waves crashing in. In the Cannery Row stretch, walk through history of a famous street of canneries that harvested millions of tons of fish, many decades ago. The Pacific Grove section is completed with the walk through of Lovers Point which features a pristine sandy beach in a protected cove.

Absolutely gorgeous train to walk or ride a bike. You are able to sit and watch the waves on the benches along the way, walk to see the sea lions, walk to the wharf.

Me and my husband enjoyed a nice evening walk along the trail, as it was about 7:30 or so we easily found parking alongside the trail. We were amazed by the rugged beauty, Monterey Bay is just too amazing! I love taking pics so this was a great place for those memorable shots of my husband climbing up and down rocks. Sunset was a little shy here not sure if because of the direction it sets but what little I did capture was so pretty. Great view, peaceful walk, I just wish I would have come earlier when it's sunny and bright and the flowers are open. Next time I visit Monterey Bay I will do that and all the other great things this town has to offer.

My family and I truly loved walking this beautiful trail by the ocean in Monterey. We walked all the way from the old pier to Lover's Point. With many beautiful things to see along the way.

Loved walking the distance from our hotel in Pacific Grove into town. Good for daytime and especially evening towards sundown!

Fantastic trail which runs around the bay and makes it super-easy to see the beauty of Monterey and Pebble Beach.

The trail is hard to follow in places. Lots of street crossings; truly a recreational trail with lots of families and rented pedicabs; a slow ride. BUT on a clear day ... lots of photo ops and friendly people. rode from hotel up to Sand City then down to Asilomar back to hotel. a good way to enjoy Monterey

A safe scenic walk takes you by a firing range of a former military base
Great for walking, biking or a vigorous walk.

We decided to only do a portion of the trail. As the title of this review reads, walked from Fisherman's Wharf to Lover's Point Beach. It was nice walk. There is paved strip for bicyclists and a dirt path beside it for walking. On some portion of the trail there is no dirt path and there is signage for where to walk on paved walkway. It's not your "typical trail". On our walk we had road on one side and other side it alternated between views of the ocean/beach, parks, backs of buildings, parking lots, and ocean again. I'm assuming the rest of the trail is not actually all like that. We did detour 3 times off the trail. Once to stop and buy a sweater at a shop on Cannery row (we were on the backside of the shop). There was convenient access to the shop. That portion of the walk behind cannery row is the backs of buildings and a parking lot or two. A second detour was to cross the street to go to Famous Footwear outlet. And third detour on the way back was to eat at Cannery Row Brewing company. Which was literally steps of the trail/path. Worked out great because after having a delicious meal there, we were able to "walk it off" while heading back to our car at Fisherman's Wharf. The walk over all was pleasant and allowed for great conversation while walking with my husband. Everyone we encountered in the path seemed friendly. And overall I enjoyed walking the path, but next time would probably get there earlier to walk a longer distance...

After lunch at The Fisherman’s Wharf, we drove a short distance to come here, parked our car at a metered spot, and walked over past the Industrial Building to check out the Sea Lions. The path was nicely paved, and was used by walkers, joggers and bikers.
At one point, we left the path and walked over on the right side to a fenced area beyond which there were tons of noisy Seals and Sea Lions just lying there sunning themselves on the sand. We also noticed plenty of Shore Birds on the rocks. People have to watch then from behind that fence so as not to get too close and disturb their normal behavior.
The views of the Ocean are calm and peaceful here. We took a lot of photos, and then drove over to the Oceanview Boulevard.
Worth coming here to take a close look at those Seals – tons of them in one place.

Fun to watch the sailboats, harbor seals, and birds. Trail was well-maintained with benches along the way.

Driven this many many times but enjoyed the morning walk.
Beauty at every turn.So relaxing seeing the wildlife and listening to the ocean along the way.
Restrooms at the golf course.
Many benches to rest at and take in the scenery.Tide pool exploring and many great pic opportunities.
Great easy walk!!

This trail is awesome. Along this trail I got to see seals, sea lions, sea otters, beautiful views, THE SUNRISE, and it lead to all the great attractions. It takes you right next to he aquarium and cannery row (but not directly on cannery row) and up to the old fisherman's wharf. So basically you can enjoy Monterey and everything it has to offer without being directly where all the tourists are. And if you want to go to cannery row, it's a half a block further down.
Along the trail there's someone near the sea lions who sits with binoculars and lets people take a look and chat about them for free. It's beautiful and everyone is friendly. Basically, anywhere you need to go is along this trail. So it makes it easy, enjoyable, and is a great "north star" if you can't figure out exactly where something is.

We walked from Monterey to Lovers Point & around Pacific Grove taking this path. It has a great view of Monterey Bay with seals & otters playing in the water. Well travelled by locals & tourists alike with plenty of spots with benches available to take a rest or a long look at the wonders of the Bay.

Beautiful views - but as a walker be sure to observe the signs and walk on the dirt beside the paved path- which is for bikers and surreys. Beach House restaurant in Pacific Grove has a great view - so if all that exercise makes you hungry - be sure to stop there for lunch or dinner. Downtown is only 2 blocks above the path in Pacific Grove - and the Aquarium in located just off the path between the cities of Monterey and Pacific Grove.
Remember to bring a jacket - this is Central CA - not LA, and the winds and temp are mid to high 60's for most of the summer - and the fog can roll in and out.

The trails runs from Lover's Point in Pacific Grove up to The Dunes in Marina. It skirts the Monterey Bay and affords marvelous views of the bay, as well as otters, seals and other wild life. It is most crowded from Lover's Point to Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf especially during the spring/summer months. If you want to ride the trail at a steady pace, ride early in the day - at least between Lover's Point and Fisherman's Wharf. North of the wharf is not nearly as populated. In any case whether you ride, run or walk the Rec Trail is a great way to enjoy the Bay.

This was one of our favorite activities in Monterey. We rented bikes on Cannery Road and headed north first along the beach in Seaside and Sand City. We took the detour into Fort Ord for a more scenic ride. After that we entered the town of Marina (not much to see) and continued north towards Castroville. By this point we we're a few miles away from the ocean and in farm land/California desert.
We turned back and retraced our route stopped for lunch in Monterey and then headed along the path to Pacific Grove. This part of the trail is truly spectacular and more favorite part as it's right along the ocean.
We continued and connected to 17 Mile Road which is also a great ride!

Beats driving. This is a great way to see the coast. There are plenty of bike shops. Make sure and stop plenty of times and enjoy the ride. Remember, if you ride 17 miles one way, you have to come back to. The bike shops will give you a map so that you can ride a short cut. But if you are down by Carmel, that short cut will take you up some really difficult hills, which are not for the faint of heart.

I ride this trail a couple times a week, about 10-20 miles on my hybrid bike. Some small rolling hills, but always a beautiful view of Monterey Bay at the top to reward you. Some sections are virtually right on the beach. I love it! My only complaint is the ignorant groups that block the whole path when they walk, and those who wear earbuds and don't hear bikes coming. For goodness sakes, walk on the side or facing traffic so you can see and move out of the way!

We were on business and during a free day decided to drive down to Monterey area. Walked from the Cannery Row area down to Pacific Grove (Lover's Point) right along the ocean. It is both bike/walk path. Awesome ocean views!! Our 2 mile walk (the trail is much longer) was one of the best, rivaling Stanley Park Seawall, Vancouver in views! Wildlife abounds, sea otters, seals, eagles, and of course the pelicans and seagulls...

This is a lovely trail for taking a walk. Quite busy at certain times of the day, but everyone is friendly and enjoying the outdoors. Bring a jacket, no matter which month, as it can get a little damp

This trail is an easy walk with magnificent views. The trail is wonderful for scenery, animal viewing, and people watching. If back there we will walk it again.

go walk the trail and enjoy being in nature, taking in the sights and sounds. Good way to wind down.

Really fantastic and scenic trail that’s great for biking or walking. You can pick it up wherever and enjoy the views of the water, wildlife, and local charm. Highly recommend!

We spent five days in the area and were on the trail every day running, walking and cycling. It was January so the trail was not busy. The scenery along the trail is wonderful, my camera is full.

This is a great biking/hiking area and highly recommend if the weather is good. Otherwise you can drive and stop at areas of interest.

This is a multi-use paved trail that passes through Monterey, CA where you can travel a little part or the whole thing. I don't recall how long it is but it goes many miles and has options for everyone. Then reward your calorie burning by having something fun to eat at one of the many places Monterey has to offer.

This is a really nice trail with limited beach access. The best part was in Pacific Grove, where we could watch hundreds of seals in the water and on the beach! The views along the trail are beautiful as well.

My wife and I walked a two mile stretch of the trail and couldn't get enough of the history and scenery along the way. We had planned a quick walk but ended up making it over an hour with all of the stops that we made along the way.

We were visiting Monterey and walked along this trail for a short bit. It was later in the evening and, being from out of town, were a bit concerned about safety after dark. We needn't have worried - there were families, couples with dogs, cyclists, skateboarders all using the trail. It appeared that everyone was respectful of the others on the trail, especially the cyclists watching out for pedestrians. I was impressed. Would loved to have walked a bit further, but we needed to travel on. This trail is a great addition to the city.

Took a walk on the trail from Fisherman's Wharf to the Aquarium in the late afternoon. Beautiful view, clean air, and no trash/litter. Nice walk!

We walked a long way on this trail which runs along Monterey Bay. We saw harbor seals and sea otters in their natural habitat. We also talked to a wildlife guide who was very informative.

nice place to take a walk to see the ocean and just relax - a cant miss with a good cup of coffee in the early morning!

If you like biking (either fast or slow), the Monterey Peninsula rail-to-trail is perfect. You can take it from Lover's Point in Pacific Grove (one end) through Monterey and out to Sand City, Seaside and to Marina, and be totally OFF-THE-ROAD (no cars) for about 15 miles each way. Riding along Monterey Bay is always beautiful and further north, you see the dunes of Fort Ord state park. Go as far as you want, then turn around and see the sights from the opposite perspective. At each end, you can go further (around Asilomar State Park in PG or all the way north to Castroville) with only some quiet roads.

I'm glad this area is open to runners, walkers, sometimes cyclist who are careful of the people on the trail. You can walk your dogs on these trail. Most of the people you meet are friendly.

We walked this trail from beach to beach during our stay in Monterey. Oh, the people and dogs we saw. Plus seals, seal lions, sea otters, and whales.

You can bike, hike, stroll - for a few blocks or for many, many miles. Stunning views of wildlife, ocean, all while steps from plenty of places to stop and eat. Benches everywhere, really great way to enjoy Monterey and the surrounds. Even if rainy, it would be lovely if you are prepared. You can bring or rent bikes and jitneys. Used it every day of our stay.

Caught a break in between storms, walked the trail from cannery row towards pacific Grove. Lovely ocean views.

I was able to run this trail before sunrise and at sunset when I attended a conference in Monterey. The trail is easily accessible and has some great views of the bay and ocean. It is crowded during the day with walkers and cyclists. Also, at sunset, the ocean portion of the trail does get a bit crowded.

Monterey is pedestrian friendly and the coastal trail is a big part of it. Whether biking or walking the trail is a great way to enjoy the scenery and get access Lover's Point, the beaches, Cannery Row, the Coast Guard pier, Fisherman's Wharf, and Lake El Estero. The people watching can't be beat. Traffic along Del Monte and Lighthouse can be a beast during season. Do us all a favor; park the car and walk. Remember, always have a coat with you even during the summer.

We stayed in Sand City in Seaside and took the bike trail into Monterey. It was an easy 20 min ride and we avoided all the parking and traffic nightmares of being in Monterey. The views are beautiful, passing dunes, beaches, coves, etc. On the weekend it is a little crazy in town dodging tourists, but overall a wonderful ride.

Wife and walked the trail from Casa Verde street and through Cannery Row. The weather was perfect without a cloud in the sky and the views were great. We watched an otter crack a clam shell on its stomach and got to see the seals sunbathe. The time we walked was great around 7 am so it wasn't very crowded.

We used the recreation trail everyday while we were in Monterey. We found out about the trail's amazing history on our walking tour of Cannery Row.

Gorgeous ocean scenery alongside this beautifully-maintained flat, paved, multi-use ~17-mile recreational trail (bicycles, runners, walkers, people pushing strollers, walking dogs, and pedaling jitneys). Several well-marked but high-traffic area street crossings, especially in the marina area. Plenty of amazing photo stops!

Ever changing, view otters, seals, sea lions, pelicans and various species of birds. Keep alert, and you may spot a whale. Sunrise is beautiful, purple Persian Carpet ground cover beyond Lovers' Point blooms in early Spring and spills over the cliffs. Bring along a jacket, as it can be chilly.

Any beautiful day foggy or sunny and walk this trail for miles . Easy walk and doesn't require hi energy lwalking

We decided to rent bikes and rode the trail out to the lighthouse. Great views and plenty of places to pull off and enjoy the scenery. This is a great trail to take by foot as well.

What is not to love - a public well kept trail going by 18 miles of beautiful Monterey terrain - and the tourist attractions in Monterey as well. It makes for a walkable and easy to get around experience in the city. 18 miles offer everything from Fisherman's Wharf and the Aquarium to remote beach at the opposite end.

One can start in Castroville and bicycle safely all the way to the city of Pacific Grove. There are many clueless pedestrians with stollers and busy with their cell phones and toddlers on the section from Del Monte Beach to Pacific Grove and this section is best avoided.
One of the best places to bicycle in the entire state is Pebble Beach and one can stop at scenic spots with a bicycle where it would not be possible to stop if in a car. Few people live in Pebble Beach year round and so very few cars on the streets in this community. Worth paying the gate fee to have this very safe area to bicycle.

Carol and I like to exit Highway 1 at the Del Rey Oaks exit and park in the public lot at the beach, we then cycle South on the trail through Monterey to Lovers Point in Pacific Grove. On the way back we stop at the Wharf Market Place and get some freshly grilled Fish tacos and a couple of artisanal beers. We then bike back past our car and take the trail north past Marina (through the Costco Parking Lot) and then turn back and head for the Jeep. If you pick any summer day the views, weather etc. will be spectacular. Trail is modestly challenging for the cyclist -- once your in old Monterey/ Wharf area you will have to deal with pedestrians but the northern part of the trail is free of walkers and opens itself to more intense cycling.

The trail is paved for a good portion by the wharf, and the views of the ocean and surroundings are very nice. We love to walk, especially on vacation, so it was nice to be able to find pathways to everywhere we wanted to go. The trails are smooth and well-maintained, with bathrooms here & there along the way. Very nice.

Whether walking, on wheels, old jogging, it is beautiful maintained with magnificent views. This alone is worth travel to the area.

This is part of the ride down to and around the Bay for bike riders who want to ride along the ocean. You can do the 5 miles threw Monterey Bay proper or make it a 30 miles jaunt North to South. It is a must do for bike riders, you can make it as long and challenging as you wish.
The problem we have all experienced is how crowded it is from the wharf south to Lover's Point, and how inattentive people are on these paths, shared by walkers, dogs, kids, runners, cyclists, blade runners, etc. There are rules on how to use these paths, but too many tourists are oblivious and obnoxious. Read and understand the right of way rules or stay off these paths.
My point is Head's Up ! This path is used by different people for different purposes; pay attention to where you and you kids are walking, your dog's leash, your strollers, etc. We're watching out for you, so you watch out for us.

Gray whales and humpbacks and orcas, oh my! The Monterey Submarine Canyon, the ocean's answer to the Grand Canyon, provides a perfect habitat for many whale species, allowing them to come close to shore to feed. Whale watching is a year-round activity and along the Monterey coast whales can sometimes be seen offshore with the naked eye. Springtime is the prime whale watching season due to the “upwelling” that occurs. Winds from the north force the deep cold water in the bay to “well” to the surface. This cold water is nutrient-rich and makes the entire ocean ecosystem bloom. From the itty bitty plankton all the way up the food chain to the largest animal on earth - the great blue whale. Experience that magic for yourself on a whale watching charter. Whale watching outfitters offer multiple trips daily.

We visited Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel on the Monterey Peninsula. We walked the recreational trail and the coastline is stunning. So much wildlife to see by the water's edge - cormorants, snowy egrets, pelicans and even mule deer at the Pacific Grove end. At Monterey you have the sea lions and the sea otters and more Pelicans and sea birds. At Carmel beach the Dolphins were swimming just metres from the water's edge. We drove to Carmel though as it was too far for us to walk - parking was free down by the beach. The town of Carmel is so pretty too - almost fairytale like in places but the beach is absolutely gorgeous. I went to the Aquarium in Monterey and Whale watching too - we saw a big blue whale, humpbacks and thousands of dolphins. This coastline is a fabulous place to visit. It is unspoilt and there are no cafes to get a drink once you pass Pacific Grove for some time so bring at least a drink with you.

I love the views and beautiful pathways of the Recreational trail. Love especially the areas between the Aquarium & Lover's Point. Lots of old time charm in Pacific Grove.

We didn’t bike the trial but walked half of the trail. Really great to do. Beautiful coast and we even saw seals! Will give you some beautiful pictures!

Met a lot of people on this trail. I used to get it to Cannery row, easy way to go, no cars. Very scenic saw a lot of birds and sea lions. You can also see a lot of boats and the bay.

It can get a bit crowded especially on the weekend but it's fun, you can walk for hours by the coast, appreciating the scenery and different animals that cross your path. This is good all year-round as temperatures are very mild in Monterey during the winter (and it can be cold during the summer)

We walked from Portola Plaza to Cannery Row past the harbor and then on to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Nice level walk.

Loved our time spent here - beautiful place to walk around and appreciate nature. Cool rocks to climb and tons of wildlife.

The Monterey Peninsula Recreational Trail is a true treasure. It provides a walking and biking trail near the town and along the coast taking you from Monetary to Pacific Grove and beyond in both directions. Seals and sea otters are easily seen from the trail and the rocks and waves are just beautiful. The trail used to be a train bed and when the tracks were torn out this is what remained.

Such a hidden gem if you are not aware of this area and if you love hiking. Randomly came across this area on vacation. Glad we took the time to explore and found there were easy trails that led to views of the ocean and even a family of seals. Definitely worth taking time out to explore the trail.

This pedestrian / bicycle trail runs for several miles along the coast. Originally, when the sardine canneries were operating, a railroad ran along this right-of-way to deliver empty cans and pick-up full cans of sardines. Fortunately, it was converted to a pleasant trail.
This is a cant miss for anyone visiting the area. The entire trail is beautiful and well kept. People are courteous and the more smiles you give the more you'll receive. April-May you see the harbor seal pups as you walk toward lovers point from the aquarium. You can see adult harbor seals along with the occasional Jr elephant seal at the beach near the Hopkins Marine Station across from the soon to be deceased Cannery Row outlet mall. At the western end of the paved trail is Lover's point which has a great public beach, picnic areas, large grass area for playing catch or kicking a ball around, a food stand, bike rentals, a nice restaurant and sand volleyball court.
You can continue to walk the gorgeous sand trail past Lover's Point to the famous purple flowers April-May right along the ocean's edge.
