A really nice walk to the end of the beach to get a closer look at the lighthouse. I wished we had our kayaks to get up closer to it, but not this trip. Park in the culdesac. make sure all 4 tires are off the road. Take the old road until the end then the beach pathway the rest of the way. Very peaceful. I would have loved to spend the whole afternoon exploring and relaxing. Highly recommend

Whether getting there by boat, or viewing from afar, the Morris Island Light is a beauty to seafarers and land lubbers alike.

By J J |

Our family of 8 really enjoyed our trip. The captain was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot of interesting facts about the estuaries and local eco system. Morris island view of the lighthouse was stunning. We are very thankful as we arrived 15 mins late for our tour that they waited on us. The kids were very excited about the shark teeth and dolphin sightings. The sunset was amazing.

my wife loves lighthouses, so we had to visit this one as well, while we were visiting South Carolina. take the kids along when you do go.

By Jill B |

This is a beautiful location to check out at sunset. The crabs at night and shells are fun to check out. It definitely is not a swimming spot but more like a beach walk location.

By etweeden |

This area of NE Morris Island is not just the site of a fine Lighthouse and wonderful views of a wild (and preserved) coastal barrier island. It is the site of Fort Wagner from the Civil War Movie "Glory". The seas and shifting sands have removed all of the remains of the Fort and the a surrounding siege works. If you can possibly make it to this island, walk the NE beaches, and remember both the movie and the battle that inspired it. Enjoy!

You cannot get to the actual lighthouse but there is an island right beside it. There are multiple tours that will take you around the lighthouse sightseeing. You can also get a wonderful view from the old radar base at the end of Folly beach.

By Tim H |

Take a trip with COA to get there, pick shells and relax on a private beach. I can't believe how beautiful it is!

By Msmattox |

The beach area is very pretty with the driftwood and being able to see the lighthouse. The walk is 1/4 mile and a beautiful area. We enjoyed walking with our family and spending time exploring the beach. We would love to see it in low tide but when we went it was high tide.

By Lisa S |

It's a really nice walk and a pretty view once you get there. There is a lot of graffiti taken over and that's kinda sad that people don't respect nature.

By Rosann Waddle |

Captain Luke was awesome! Our tour was perfect. Luke is so knowledgeable about the local eco system. We saw dolphins everywhere and the time on the island was unreal. A must adventure for everyone.

By jbrenz |

Would’ve enjoyed this a lot more if I wasn’t swarmed by mosquitoes and no-seeums the minute I stepped out of the car and started walking the path towards the beach. Found a beautiful sand dollar on the beach and it was nice to see the lighthouse, but the biting bugs ruined it for me. The walk was interesting as it was all a canvas for street artists/graffiti artists.

By KentuckyTravelBug80 |

The lighthouse is not accessible but you can get wonderful views of it at the very end of Folly Beach. There is a paved trails however, it does not open until 10. We took the sandy path to the right and had an amazing walk on the beach all the way around to see the lighthouse. I packed our one year old daughter in a carrier and she got to see the ocean for the very first time! We came back down the sandy trail then took the paved trails. Lots of graffiti but with positive messages. At the end, you do have to climb a small dune to get to see the beach and the lighthouse but I was able to do this fairly easily while packing my baby who weighs 26 pounds. A stroller would not be able to scale the dune. Highly recommend this activity!

This lighthouse is beautiful but it takes some effort to get to. I would not recommend if you aren't able to walk far distances. It's tucked away but definitely a Charleston treasure.

By Kelsey Cherry |

The walk to the tip of Folly Island was about 1/4mi from where we parked. The view was beautiful with the Morris Lighthouse, Sullivan Lighthouse, and Ravenel Bridge in the distance. Sunrise was beautiful and we saw lots of Dolphins that were surprisingly close to shore!

YOU MUST BRING BIG SPRAY!!!
The gnats are relentless and there some mosquitoes too. We were there for about a 1/2 hr and I left with literally hundreds of bites and any exposed skin was covered in red dots from all the bites.

I would definitely return to watch the sunrise again, but I will be dosing myself in DEET prior to arriving at the beach. Bugs weren't bad on the walk too the beach, but as soon as you get to location they will swarm you.

By The Wanderful Journey |

This Charleston secret is at the north end of Folly Beach. A short 1/2 hike takes you one of the best vistas in Charleston. You can ramble down the beach and see Morris Island lighthouse and on a clear day Sullivans Island Lighthouse. In the distance the Arthur Ravenel Bridge reminds you of the grandeur of our big little city.

By Julie91161 |

It a longer walk than expected and parking is difficult, remember to bring a $1.00 per person for admission to the park

By Alberto T |

Morris Island Lighthouse is a beautiful, old lighthouse that sits just a bit off-shore from the beach, but still close enough to get a really good look (though if you want to a take a good photo, you'll need a good camera). There is paid parking lot nearby ($2) where you have to park, and there is a .5 mile cement walkway with a bunch of graffiti written on it all along the way that leads to a beautiful beach where you can have a look at the lighthouse. There's also some cool looking dead trees on one part of the beach.

By Melissa N |

Little bit of a walk to the beach, but WAY worth it. Beach is so pretty and clean, but the shells are all broken so don't go there for shelling. Great picture taking for beach and lighthouse, but don't expect to walk to the lighthouse, you'd have to take a boat. Word is, if you get there there are great shells.

By hammond180 |

Wonderful surprise ! We found this spot accidentally and were so happy we did . Short walk to the beach to see the lighthouse also watched a pod of dolphins swimming in the waterway between the shore and the lighthouse . Secluded not touristy and very beautiful !

By Flo C |

Boat tour of creeks leading to the lighthouse. Saw dolphins and wildlife. Beach and lighthouse were beautiful. Sand loaded with oyster shells! Found beautiful shells along the beach. Worth a visit!

By Greg S |

Nice short hike (0.5 mi) on a wide path (or you can take the beach route) to get to the best viewing point of the lighthouse. Worth the time to take a look and snap a few pictures.

By Melissa T |

The best way to see this lighthouse is to take the Eco-Cruise offered by Charleston Outdoor Adventures! It was a lot of fun and very educational!

By TravelDude88 |

My family and I visited this landmark the third week of July 2018. We parked for free in the assigned area as it was not crowded. The 1/4 mile walk to the actual beach was fun as there is lots of graffiti along the walkway. Most of it was clean and I didn't have to hide anything from my 9 year old. Once we got to the beach, it was very clean and not crowded at all. I saw signs stating that dogs were not allowed because they scare the birds away. The driftwood and the view of the ocean was breathtaking. We were able to see the lighthouse from the beach, although we were not able to walk to it as it looked as if it were surrounded by water. This was a pleasant trip for families or if you want be see a wonderful landmark.

By Julie P |

We took the Viator boat tour out to the lighthouse. Captain Dan is the best. We had over 30 sightings of dolphins. Captain Dan is a true lover of nature and wildlife from sea life to the birds. He also knows the name of everyone on the water. He gave us the history of the lighthouse. Highly recommend!!!!

By Brett and Wendy K |

We had a wonderful time visiting Morris Island - be sure to select an Eco Tour from Charleston Outdoor Adventurers!

By RobSC1001 |

This is a great little lighthouse out in the water. The walk is enjoyable and no zombies, clodhoppers or sidewinders in the area. The beaches are clean. No restrooms, do you have to use the bushes.

By JebDave |

Park your car and walk down the sandy road through what is a beautiful natural habitat and end up on a surprise cove. Pack a picnic and a blanket and have a breath of quiet and beauty listening to the birds, water and imagine living in the old lighthouse

By Laura K |

Another peace of history. Took some great pictures of this light house at different times of day. To bad my camera was stolen

By NatureChaser |

Morris Island Lighthouse is easy to see from Morris Island but it is not on Morris Island...today. You can only reach the lighthouse by boat but you can't enter it. If you happen to be on Morris Island for some other purpose, you can take a long walk to reach a point where you can take a photo from a distance.

By mrsmomof2 |

We parked at the end of Ashley Dr as recommended. There are limited spaces. The walk to the end of the island is not bad. I recommend going early or late to avoid the heat and taking the beach so you will have a breeze. It is probably the best view you'll get without a boat. The end of the island is peaceful and has beautiful spots for nature pictures.

By AND19_79 |

If you are staying in FB or visiting, you need to go to see the lighthouse. Follow Arctic to the end. Park and walk. (Don't carry too much stuff or go at the heat of the day). You might want a bucket or back for the shells you will find. This is our 3rd summer staying in Folly Beach and we come every year. We have seen Dolphins here on 2/4 visits (one summer we ent twice-2014).

One year (2014) we met some fishermen who told us more info-- you CAN get a chartered tour to get closer to the lighthouse (since you cannot get TO the lighthouse from this spot). Also, the current is very strong at this beach and there is a sharp drop off at the edge of the water. My kids were with me (both under age 6) and He told me he wouldn't let his kids even put their feet in the water because the drop off is sudden and sharp and hard to see because of how the tides can change things. Meanwhile, the summer before that (2013) there had been girls in the water (closer to the rock/jetty area) very far out looking for sea creatures and sand dollars (quite successfully). So, just some tips that caution should be taken.

By MichaelandAnn |

We found some where close to park. The walk to the beach was very pretty, many butterflies when we visited. With a little imagination it was easy to imagine the days when the light house was functioning and to hope that the efforts to refurbish it would succeed. The beach was deserted and both pretty and romantic
Take some bug spray! I was fine but my wife was eaten alive.

By Gburgabe |

This is a fantastic historic lighthouse that at one time was right near land. It is still a great place to visit and very quiet. You park at the end of the road and then walk about 1/4 of a mile to the beach. It is a gorgeous site and there was only one other person there when I was. Highly recommended visiting this historic site

By LouET_79 |

We are always looking to find Lighthouses so when personnel on the Charleston Water Taxi told Us about this one, we knew we had an afternoon mission. It is easy to locate at the end of James Island, past Folly Beach. Parking is limited (on the street) and there is a short walk out to the viewing area. This is not a Lighthouse you can tour, it is out in the ocean, but you have a great view from the beach.

By Scott P |

Unnecessarily long walk considering that the area is paved 3/4 of the way to the beach but is gated. You can't make it out y to the lighthouse but view it from the beach.

By Nmrisch |

We had some spare time while in Charleston so we drove over to Folly Beach to check out this lighthouse. It is on a sandbar off the coast, so you can't actually get to the lighthouse, but you can get a pretty good view of it. You have to park on the side of the road where it ends and then walk out a little further on a closed section of road...from there it's a short walk across the dunes to the beach where you have a nice view. Definitely take your bug spray. for some reason the inlet didn't have a great breeze there, so the tiny little biting gnats/flies ate us up!

By Julie V |

Remote island with great views. Dolphins nearby and birding opportunities. We recommend using Absolute Reel Screamer Charters for your trip to Morris Island Light House!

By Deborah Buchanan |

Morris Island Lighthouse was lovely to see standing tall from rhe shores of beautiful Folly Beach, SC. Just head into Folly Beach and turn left at the only red light. At the end of the road you can view the lighthouse by entering the Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve or via the Beach Access and walk left along the shoreline. We walked on the shore because we had our dog Tango with us and pets are not allowed in the Preserve. It was a short walk with amazing views of the ocean and undistupted dunes. From the ocean shore, you turn the corner and there stands the splendid lighthouse to the enterance to Charleston harbor. You can also see the Ravanel Bridge in the distance. Great photo opportunity so don't forget your camera. I suggest making it a beach day and enjoy Folly at it's finest!

By 97tammyj |

We took the Absolute Reel Screamer boat trip to this island. So fun! Lovely stuff to be found here, including sharks teeth, conch, Civil War relics, sand dollars, and all kinds of shells.

By Ray Z |

The Pictures we saw were Beautiful especially the Sunsets !
We were even willing to walk out to it at low tide, but I could not figure out how to get to the area by land

By Stafford-Ames M |

Two of my ancestors were its keeper. Plan to visit again soon and also Savanah now that I live in Athens, Ga.

By kristal h |

If you love nostalgia, this is a must see if in the Folly Beach area. We went at high tide and enjoyed seeing the lighthouse from a distance with dolphins swimming in front of it. As many have noted, low tide is best for getting closer to the lighthouse. The 1/4mi walk to the lighthouse is splattered with spray painted graffiti. I typically detest graffiti, but this adds so much interest to the walk. When you first arrive be sure to get a brochure from the little box on left side of culdesac to learn about the lighthouse’s story. There’s an envelope enclosed if you’d like to make a donation towards the lighthouse’s preservation. There’s also a donation box at the entrance. If using GPS to the lighthouse follow E Ashley River Rd to the very end. Our GPS tried to stop us at a paid parking area.

By Haschker |

The Morris Island Lighthouse is a special place in Charleston and a City Icon. It sits on a shifting sandbar accessed by boaters only, Eco tours are available for transport to the lighthouse. While the light house is not functional and is closed to the public, It's majestic beauty still shines.

By familyof3 |

I just happened to overhear someone talking about this tour and I am so glad I did! I learned some of the eco system of Charleston, saw dolphins, sea gulls and clams and of course the Lighthouse which was beautiful. The boat driver was very knowledgeable and friendly. Make sure to take a bag to collect sea shells at the beach stop AND bug spray....that was not mentioned and we fought the flying bugs at the beach too. Price might appear a bit hefty, but I would do it again. I had a great time!

By baze3026 |

As mentioned in other reviews, you can park and walk up a 1/4 mile stretch of pavement to the beach area. A word of warning, there is NO cover from the sun so, on a hot summer day, that short walk can be brutal for some. It is well worth it though. At the end, you come to a secluded beach full of driftwood and a have a great view of the lighthouse. I recommend this little outing to anyone making a visit to the Charleston area.

By TammyJustin |

We had an amazing time on the island taking pictures and finding shells. I got some great pictures of dolphins playing near the boat.

By Sherry H |

We walked out to the lighthouse after spending the day at Folly Beach and watching football at Rita's. It was a beautiful surprise!

By CSZ |

This old historic lighthouse is definitely worth seeing. It is just a short walk out to the beach. We went in the evening shortly before sunset. It was quiet and peaceful. We even saw a dolphin with her baby swimming very close to shore. As the sun was setting it made for a perfect end to the day. This was one of my favorite spots on my Charleston trip.

By Betsy M |

Captain Dallas gave us a tour filled with info and humor. The wildlife sightings were exceptional - terns, ibis’, kingfishers, oystercatchers, pelicans, and dolphins. So many dolphins! And so close to the boat you could almost touch them. Morris Island was serene and beautiful; filled with seashells, too. This tour was the absolute best thing my husband and I did while visiting Charleston.

By sherrycat |

We drove to the end of Foley Beach and walked 1/4 mile to the end beach to view the lighthouse. Incredible history and great that people want to keep it from being destroyed. It looks so lonesome out there. There were Christmas wreaths at the end that you can take photos by and if you plan it right, you can catch the lighthouse in the background.

By Kathy S |

I attended a wedding with the light house an the background, how gorgeous! This is a great place to go shelling, we always take a boat over. Pack plenty of water and sunscreen

By stan b |

the lighthouse is beautiful, the walk not terrible...hey its the beach..its hot and sandy but great walk. the parking is $2.00 an hour or $10.00 all day... not terrible but it seems folly has became about the money.

also dammed if you drink a beer on the beach..hard working responsible adults cant drink a beer...lol
.in florida they carry drinks out to you..

By Missy S |

We went on the lighthouse eco tour and it was wonderful! Great guide who told us a lot and we saw many dolphins along the way!

By Melanie B |

You can't really get to the lighthouse, as Morris Island really is an island off Folly Beach, but still a nice walk down the beach to see. Lots of nature to observe on the 5-7 walk from your car as well.

By Debra |

While visiting Folly Beach we stumble upon the walk to view the lighthouse. What a great walk and great view. It's amazing how many storms it has withstood!

By Ralph G |

Great history and got to see dolphins feeding while we were there.
View is spectacular, make sure to bring a camera

By Jacqueline W |

No matter the tide, this lighthouse is still pretty far out. Interesting to see, just don't expect to get super close.

By H2OKULR |

Depending on what you read, the light is either in danger of falling at any moment, despite efforts to shore up the structure, or it is currently shored up for preservation and will not fall. Either way, upon a recent trip to Charleston I felt it necessary to visit just in case it was lost to the ocean and I didn't have another opportunity. It was easily one of the best things that I did while in Charleston. The beauty of what once was and that which yet remains makes for a wonderful short trip out of the Holy City. Well worth your time. If I happen back in Charleston once more, weather and time permitting, I will return to Folly Beach to look out to it again. If you're there and you're looking for something that is peaceful and serene this is a perfect destination for you. Highly recommended.

By sc40sumthin |

i love the walk out to view the lighthouse. the butterflies, the trees, the waves, the view...a wonderful place to take it all in. A distant view of the bridge and the sullivans island lighthouse can also be seen here.

By KPS_EMS |

Driving down to Folly Beach, walking along the beach, taking pictures of driftwood & the lighthouse, and picking up seashells -- all part of a couple of very well spent hours on a warm (for the season) sunny day. Would recommend.

By Courtney A |

Morris Island is a local tradition. It gets crazy out there on Memorial Day and July 4th, so I would avoid the island then. Cool spot to see.

By Evelyn P |

There are some really spots to get pictures and get the lighthouse in the background. Overall not super impressive, but it's is a good place to take a stroll.

By C N |

We visited the Morris Island via the adjacent beach on Folly Island. The path was a little over half a mile by quick estimation, and was an old paved roadway at one time, then the last quarter mile or so was beach path walking. The breakwaters created an interesting foreground for picture taking, we got to see starfish for the first time as they had washed ashore and we got some good pictures. We will return.

By Tim K |

Lovely boat trip to and around the Lighthouse. I learned it is a very historic structure(built n 1876) in need of community support to preserve her. let's do it!!

By James H |

I parked in the limited parking area just before the 1/2 mile paved entrance to the beach. The lighthouse can only be seen up close by boat as it sets on a sand bar island. Easily seen from shore. Nice beach where folks picnic. Driftwood and small marsh behind the beach where birds abound. Safe area for wading, but a current runs between the island and shore. Hint: bring water and wear sunscreen. Folly Beach offers some great places to enjoy the seashore.

By Ron A |

Strange---Morris Island Lighthouse cannot be walked to but can be viewed in many different angles/ways. The ways to view the lighthouse: north beach of Folly Beach, saltwater boat excursions/Morris Island itself. A sandbar is forming which could reach the lighthouse again which was washed away from hurricane Hugo. Tip: view on Morris Island the remains of a wrecked sailboat but not much left of it. Tip: a good way to visit Morris Island and see the lighthouse is via Tideline Tours--Salt Marsh Adventures captained by Capt. Anton DuMars on Folly Beach.

By carolina lady |

I took my visiting German family on this tour. They found the entire adventure to be awesome. Our guide was very knowledgeable. The group was small. The dolphins were everywhere, and we learned so much about all the wildlife. Just starting on the quirky Bowen's Island made the adventure so authentically southern.

By RS84NC |

So plan ahead and see this wonderful little lighthouse, off the island and only accessible by boat. Take the eco tour and enjoy 1 hour on the island, exploring, swimming and relaxing.

By Andy H |

A little out of the way but worth it. You can't get to without a boat but a must see if you are trying to see all lighthouses on the coast.

By vicki |

If you go to this make sure you take a cooler with your own libations. You can take alcohol food or whatever but you have to take your own. They do not sale. Also if you can.... get Derick as your boat driver. He is soooo knowledgeable about marine life.

By camioneal |

A short hike and you are in the perfect SC beach spot. Great for seashell hunting, a great view of the light house. What a cool spot!

By barbara k |

Beautiful old lighthouse that was being built during the Civil War.
The lighthouse stands IN the ocean even at low tide, but you can get close enough!

By Frances M |

The walk to the shore is lined with hearts, hearts of all sizes and colors! It is so calming, you just know you're about to see something great! After about a 1/4 mile walk, it's light an amazing natural reveal. The shore line has large boulders and sea shells are everywhere. You can stroll along the shore, fish or just sit be in ah of God's glory! The lighthouse seems as if it's in a painting....best part of the trip!

By RobinGaree |

It is a bit of a hike to see the old Morris Island Light, but so well worth it!! Be sure to bring your camera ;)

By C809SQedwardr |

Drove thru heavy traffic for over 1/2 hour only to discover that the last 1/2 mile had to be done on foot! Due to the fact that street parking was practically non-existent, we ended up walking an additional 3 blocks -- and then, to add insult to injury, when we got to the end of the road (after the 1/2 mile walk), before we could even see more than just the top of the lighthouse, there was a billboard announcing: "help save the lighthouse" with a donation box attached!

Nothing in the guidebooks mentioned that nice hike in 80 degree heat!

Definitely the lowest point of the past 7 days!!!

By 2019 Europe trip |

wanted to visit this lighthouse, but went to Sullivan Island lighthouse instead and ran into Fort Moultrie

By Dana D |

you can only get to Morris Island by boat, and you cant even get near the lighthouse unless it's low tide, but just to see it and know the history is really cool, Plus there are dolphins!

By Stucolco |

Although you cannot actually go to this lighthouse and climb it, it is well worth going to see it. Since we were staying in Folly Beach, it was a short car ride along Ashley Avenue to its end where the Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve begins. They charge $1 person to enter and there is a box to put money in. It is totally on the honor system so I am sure that some people do not bother to pay. It is a pleasant walk, less than half a mile, down to the water where you will have an excellent view of this magnificent lighthouse. In the distance you can see the Ravenel Bridge between Mt. Pleasant and Charleston.

By Thomas Berta |

This is a favorite spot to fish, watch the dolphins swim or just take in the sun. You can explore the shoreline, but remember to keep an eye on the tide or you may have to travel through some water. Awesome place top visit.

By oceansidecowgrl9 |

Was able to do a boat excursion to the island and it did not disappoint. It was amazing to get as close to the lighthouse as we could and explore the island that at one time was connected to it.

By escott b |

Great place to visit if you are out the folly way. About a mile walk but when you get there it is nice, normally dolphins/porpoises in the inlet where the ocean and river met as well as huge hermit crabs and other wildlife you wont see in developed areas. Great for photo opportunities. The light house is in accessible but there are some signs to tell you about the areas and lighthouses history.

By JStarkey |

If you drive all the way to the end of Ashley Road you will run into an abandoned Coast Guard Station & beach. You park along the road and walk around 1/4 mile to the beach, where you have a great view of the lighthouse. The beach is pretty quiet. There were people laying out and some fishing. There were signs no swimming because of a riptide. It would be a nice beach to go to if you want to get away from the crowds & didn't want to swim.

By Lisa A |

Was neat to see the lighthouse. Was disappointed you do not actually get to see it up close. Plus you have to walk down a road to be able to see if from a distance.

By Lu S |

This lighthouse / beach combination is what makes the Charleston area lovely - a combination of the beach and a bit of history. Note: it is hidden and 8-10 minute walk to the beach to see the lighthouse. We had no problem parking in the circle by the walkway (but it was during the week). Look closely at the water - we saw more dolphins than we would count! We walked back and then drove a short way to the pier for lunch.

By Chelseakaym |

Beautiful place and you can see a ton of marine life off the rocks around. I’ll never forget this lighthouse because it is where my husband and I got married in 2015.

By Suzanne S |

A terrific place to go and see the dolphins swim. The sea shells are mostly mussel shells though there are plenty of them.

By jonnieb122 |

We had a blast on this trip through the marshes, and oyster beds. Captain Gresh was able to give us the local history of the area, and a lot of information on the marsh ecosystem. Captain Gresh even got us near some Bottle-nosed Dolphins, which we were able to watch swim with their young. The Captain got us ashore to look for shells and sand dollars, I only wish we had more time. This was one of the most interesting local adventures we enjoyed in South Carolina. Our feet didn't even have to get wet if we didn't want to, The Captain was very explanatory of ingress and egress of his craft. Bring sunscreen, water, hats, and patience, looking for specimens.

By Bryan L |

This is a beautiful lighthouse. It is a shame that it is out to sea now even at low tide. When we first started going to Charleston years ago, you could take a boat ride to the island and walk up to the lighthouse at low tide. They used to leave you on the island for a couple of hours to explore before coming back to get you. It was our favorite thing to do in Charleston. My wife loved it so much she wants her ashes spread there when she dies.

It was awesome. Now you can only view it from the beach or boat.

However, it is worth going to see as it is one of the prettiest lighthouses you will see.

By Darlinda C |

If you want a great view of the Lighthouse, just drive to Folly Beach and turn left at the only red light and drive until it is a dead end! Then walk the sandy path to the end (yes, it's not a short walk) to see the best view of the lighthouse!

By Applewhite1 |

The short walk to the light house is definitely worth it. You actually can't get to the light house but the beach is very private and serene. There were many Dolphins and wildlife. Great place to take a nice walk.

By Lisa S |

We took a trip to Morris Island via Charleston Outdoor Adventures. They took us through the estuaries near Folly Beach to the lighthouse. We enjoyed seeing the light, and there were some neat shells to be found.

By daughertyh06 |

This is where my husband proposed, so of course it's get a 5-star review! Unbiased as I can though, it really is beautiful out there. It's pretty secluded too, so a nice and relaxing get away from the hustle and bustle of S.C. Very romantic and fun little spot!

By Lucy P |

We took a tour with the Absolute Reel Screamer and Garsh was our guide. It ended up being a private tour since no one else had signed up at the same time that we did. He is extremely knowledgeable about the island and the history. He showed us different artifacts on the beach as well as those he collected in the past.

The kids had so much fun collecting seashells as we walked out to see the lighthouse.

Of all the tours to the Lighthouse, this is by far the BEST, of them all !!!!
If you do only one tour, let this be the one.

By Zeke T |

Charleston Outdoor Adventures offers a very enjoyable trip to the lighthouse. During the boat ride we saw plenty of birds, quite a few dolphins, a loggerhead turtle & a black/white spoonbill. The lighthouse itself was just off the shoreline & as the tide was going out we could walk across the sand to within 500'. Plenty close for an excellent view & to take multiple pictures with a zoom lens. Due to it's age & condition, the lighthouse is marked 'No Trespassing'.

By marcia B |

Captain Bryson Stoddard (localknowledgesc.com) took us on a 2-hour private tour onboard his boat. One of our destinations was to see Morris Island Lighthouse. He shared the story of how Morris Island was destroyed.

By Tim W |

Nice place , clean and very stress relieving . Great view to the water and surrounding area from atop the lighthouse.

By Jen E |

I took a marsh tour and our final stop was the lighthouse. We all jumped ship and started walking towards the lighthouse. The captain gave us 30 minutes to explore the beach and take photos of the lighthouse. You can get somewhat close but the sea separates you from the lighthouse. I did this activity solo but it would something that you could do with your significant other or family. I loved it.

By Julie M |

Absolutly excellent! A must do at sunset. I am a local and it is not just for our wonderful tourist. Worth every penny if you love history, water, ecology, beach, shells, education and sunsets. Just loved it. The staff are knowledgeable and pretty awesome!

By Mike K |

This is a nice beach area to walk and take pictures of the lighthouse. We went early, so parking wouldn't be an issue and to get some of the cool morning light from the sun rising. We did not expect a dolphin to be right by shore where we were walking!

By LindaT |

Took a tour via Charleston Outdoor Adventures. We explored the beach near the lighthouse, and the natural environment on the island.

By bailey b |

I love riding out to Morris Island on the boat! We normally cook out and hang out with friends. The beach is great to walk on and take the pups and family! Pretty shells to find and seeing the light house up close is so neat! Growing up in the low country I have always been fond of the surrounding light houses but now Morris Island Lighthouse is my favorite! This is where my fiance and I got engaged! Now I can walk that stretch of beach with even more love and fondness.

By Charlotte Rosales |

Loved Morris Lighthouse, the walk along the beach to get there is beautiful once there the Lighthouse is majestic.

Morris Island Lighthouse, located on the south side of the entrance to Charleston Harbor in South Carolina, north of the City of Folly Beach, once protected the shipping lanes leading to the harbor and what has become one of the busiest ports in the United States. It was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The first Morris Island Light, located in a brick tower on Morris Island, was established in 1767. In 1838, the tower rose 102 feet from the base to the lantern, which was described as a revolving light. In 1858, a new first-order lens was installed. During the Civil War, the light was extinguished. A new lighthouse, 161 feet in height, was constructed in 1876. By 1938, the shoreline had reached the lighthouse, forcing its automation as it was no longer safe or practical to keep it manned. It was decommissioned in 1962 and replaced by the new Charleston Light, which stands 140 feet high on the north side of Charleston Harbor entrance on Sullivan's Island. In 2010, a project was completed that stabilized the Morris Island Lighthouse by placing a ring of concrete around it. A 109-foot-tall replica is on display at Broadway at the Beach, a shopping complex in Myrtle Beach.

Lighthouse that is several hundred yards out to sea. Illustrates the power of erosion. But has also survived several hurricanes. Can be seen easily from Folly beach, SC. Please don't walk out to it. The rip currents are dangerous, and it may fall anytime.

By Brian M |

Looks nice from a distance. Great photo opps from the beach, but you can't get to it without a boat. Even then, you can't go inside. The lighthouse is still being worked on in phases based on funding. The walk to the beach is neat...seeing all of the positive graffiti along the walkway. I hope people keep it that way and don't ruin it with negative art/comments.

By Wanda H |

Nice view and you you could walk through the shallow water to see it up close. Lots and lots of shells on the beach- free. Boat ride through the marshes was great. Driver explained the different colors, the soil, the fish found and other wildlife. However, 1 hr at the light house was a bit too long.

This classic old lighthouse is guarding the passage to Charleston. Not reachable on foot, it is clearly visible from the northern tip of Folly Beach.

By islandboy1575 |

Wow! I live in the area but this place never gets old. The outline of Fort Wagner can still be seen and the shells and sharks teeth are everywhere. The island is only accessible by boat so the surrounding beaches are pristine and there are several charters that will drop you off and pick you up. Take a moment and read the history of this place and you will be amazed. The film Glory is in part based on actual events that occurred here during the civil war. Take a walk back in time you will not regret it!

I love visiting lighthouses and this one is the tallest in SC. You have to walk an easy paved path covered with graffiti of which some is some amazing art work to a small sandy hill. You can walk along the beach to view the lighthouse.

By Wkspraggi |

It was really too far out to get a good photo shot of the lighthouse. Highly recommend taking a boat tour that takes you up close.

By RobSC1001 |

This is a neat o place. Bring some pray paint for the driveway. The beach is awesome and the light house was on some sand bar. There were a few hot chicks on the beach also.

I parked at the end of Folly Beach and took the old abandoned road that leads out to the end of the island where there is a very secluded beach area that overlooks the Morris Island Lighthouse. You could take a boat and go over to the lighthouse, but would not want to go at high tide. The road that I hiked to get out to the end of the island and to the lighthouse viewing point was closed to traffic, pedestrians only, but could have easily made things more accessible to the public by allowing bicycles and golf carts down the trail. It was a very hot and muggy walk, in full sun with no shade. The last part of the walk involved some uphill walking in very deep sand. it was a walk for people in good health and would not be handicapped accessible. Even so, this was something that everyone should have on their bucket list to do. It was the perfect deserted island feel on a beautiful white sand beach and the lighthouse directly in front of you! Stunning!

By Lila Navarro |

What a beautiful sight of the lighthouse at sunset! The pictures are amazing so serene. The walk to the lighthouse is filled with loving and positive messages on the pedestrian road a real fun walk.

By Kyle G |

Best way to view is by walking to the edge of Folly Beach, others like the view from a boat, but I like the calm and quiet of walking. IT IS NOT A SHORT WALK, but it's well worth it. This is the best lighthouse. Eerie in its own way. I hope the efforts to save this lighthouse from natural destruction are successful. Great picture opportunities, and keep walking around the island. There are some really beautiful spots once you get to the marsh area.

By MKTBE |

We so enjoyed our recent visit to Folly Beach, South Carolina. What a beautiful area, and the Morris Island Lighthouse was a highlight of our holiday! There is no parking area, but abundant parking on the side of the road, then a short paved, decorative walk to a secluded beach area with the island lighthouse in the distance. The only negative is that there were no restrooms available, and the port-a-potties were locked! The beach is beautiful and scattered with driftwood! So many breathtaking photo opportunities of nature's glorious artistry! We can't wait to visit Charleston and Folly Beach again!

By Alex T |

Its a bit of a walk to get to the beach the lighthouse is on, but worth it. The beach was nice and quiet, so bring a chair or towel to relax on if you want to avoid the noisy crowded beaches. The lighthouse itself was very cool. Be aware that you cannot access it other than boat. Added bonus: dolphins were spotted just in front of the lighthouse. Worth a stop.

By bassaidai88 |

We took the lighthouse tour which starts at the rickety dock by Bowen's Restaurant which is surrounded by oyster shells. Our guide Tripp was very knowledgeable and took the time to explain how the ecosystem works. We saw dolphins, egrets and pelicans. Tripp also explained how the shrimping boats operate and the TED systems they employ: Turtle Excluder Device. Morris island itself does have plenty of broken shells and the views of the lighthouse are great. So not only is this excursion educational but also very scenic.

By Anna Coon |

Parked the car and walked down the path to the lighthouse. I was thankful we had bug spray. Such a beautiful view!

By Sabine S |

I love lighthouses and so this was a must tour to take for me. Apart from me there was a large family with several adults and children on the tour and we were placed in two boats. The kids were equipped with life jackets for their safety. The two captains were knowledgable and fun to do the tour with. They tried to find us some dolphins to watch and got the kids all excited about a shipwreck on the way. On Morris island we got to roam on our own and I tried to get as close as possible to the lighthouse to take some pictures as long as the tide was low. There were many shells to collect for those who like doing this. All in all it was a fun trip to take and I am sure to do it again on my next visit.

Yes i'm sure my title is a little cheesy, but it's true. This beautiful lighthouse is kind of like an old beaten dog that was just about to get the sleep nod when a family walked in and said 'i'll take it'. The structure had long since fallen into disrepair and because of shifting currents, Morris Island became part of the atlantic. It was going to be demolished but thanks to the tireless efforts of a historic preservation group, the lighthouse was saved and they even put in structural supports to maintain it's integrity.

Now for the review- This island treasure is worth every second of the trip. You need to make way to Folly and once you reach west ashley ave, you take a left and drive all the way down. It's a great little stroll by bike, although i'd be weary of doing it with little kids because the road is narrow and on occasion the drivers can be unforgiving. The walk from the parking area on the road to the viewpoint takes a little while, so my family and i usually hit the small path to the beach and walk along the shore. There are a lot of great picture opportunities here, it's free, and the historic lighthouse is magnificent. The kids can play around on the beach, crawl around the drift wood trees, and it's supposedly a good fishing spot.

By yarddigger |

It's a long drive to the end of Ashley Drive and then a long walk to the beach where you can finally see the lighthouse out in the bay. I would not recommend this trip unless you enjoy observing and studying lighthouses in general.

By Katie M |

Our beach house was a ten minute walk to the lighthouse. This made it nice to go and visit several times while we were there. We would visit for the sunrises and be able to get an awesome view of the lighthouse, which was closer to land than I thought it would be. Pictures don't do it justice.

By Elaine M |

Luke, our tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the dolphins in the area. He was able to tell us about the baby dolphins we saw and when they were born. He had seen the birth of one of them.

Definitely a great experience and one I would highly recommend.

By Terri |

We spent the day at Folly Beach and then just as the sun was going down, headed down to Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve. It is a quick 15 minute drive down W Ashley Avenue from the beach area. Once there, you can park on the side of the road for free. (Just not in front of someone's house driveway.) There is pay parking as well. From there it is an easy 1/2 mile walk to the beach. The paved road leading to it is nicely "graffiti" with positive messages and pictures. (We only saw a couple inappropriate writings). Once at the beach, you can get a nice picture of the lighthouse and driftwood on the beach. Absolutely beautiful. Worth the visit.

By Caitlin J |

Great little walk to Morris Island. The lighthouse and beach is beautiful. Great place for photos. Take a picnic, we were hungry :) Definitely recommend!!

By SL21872 |

Enjoyed the sort 1/4 miles walk to the beach. Did not care for all the graffiti along the way. Nice view of lighthouse from beach. Saw dolphins swimming by. Again graffiti takes away from the natural beauty of the beach area.

By Joseph C |

When this light house was built it was on solid ground. Now it's out in the ocean on a sand bar.

It's a good day trip for a family and a piece of southern history.

By ngachick |

The lighthouse is lovely but the city of Folly Beach is very unwelcoming to visitors to this lighthouse. They have one public beach parking area that holds maybe 20 cars at the most. They also place 'no parking' signs along the dead end roadway for about a quarter mile past the dead end. Even if you park past all of the posted no parking places you still get a packing ticket. I can understand residents being frustrated if people are parking down in their yards or blocking driveways, etc but not if they are parallel parked on the side of the road.....if you're going to buy a house next to a tourist attraction with very limited parking options having people parallel park on the street in front of your house is part of what you are signing up for. City should go past the barriers and create additional parking areas or at least offer a trolley service from the main part of town for visitors who might want to visit the lighthouse but can't due to unavailability of parking. They should also be clearer on boundaries of the no parking areas. Town was lovely and as a first time visitor I probably would have returned, but as there are plenty of beach towns accessible from Charleston I'll likely seek out others that are more welcoming when in the area again.

By Stacy R |

While you can't technically "visit" the lighthouse, it is definitely worth a trip to Folly Beach to see it. Once on land, this lighthouse is now several hundred feet offshore and is a piece of "must-see" history since it may be gone one day.

Imagine all the ships it guided into Charleston's harbor, the war it has seen, the hurricanes it has survived. Though it no longer provides a guiding light, this lighthouse is a symbol of strength and survival, and you can feel that just being in its presence.

True...parking is difficult, and it's a long walk to the beach after entering the park. At the time we went, the road was covered with graffiti hearts that led the way to the beach.

TIPS: Bring $1/person for admission to the beach.

By Cliff D |

You can see the Morris Island Lighthouse from several places in Charleston. The best place to see it without a boat is on the north tip of Folly Beach. If you want to get a closer look you will have to take a boat there. If you do make sure to take your fishing poles because the fishing is pretty good on Morris Island.

By hjai3 |

Light house. ocean. dolphins. sand. what more do you need? It is a little bit if a walk but well worth it.

By HattieMags |

Cant get out to it thanks to Morris island eroding away years back in the tides. The goal is one day to change that but for now - enjoy it from the beach or take a boat ride out. (Bring your own boat!)

There is a lot more land there than there used to be around it and I know they are working on supporting it again. Problem is the tides and wind are working against the efforts which is why it is out in the water to begin with. It's a bit of a hike to get out there and I recommend following the beach around to it. But a pretty area and windy once you are there. And look out into the distance when you get there to the right of the Morris Island Lighthouse and you will see the light from the Sullivan's Island Lighthouse spinning from time to time. (The two markers for the entrance to Charleston Harbor.)

I hope they do support it and one day we can again go out and see it close up!

By C P M |

Once upon a time this light house stood on Morris Island but now it is out to sea. The island has washed away over time. A foundation is trying to keep it standing. It is mounted on a wood foundation driven into the sand. One time it helped guide ships into Charleston Harbor. Interesting bit of history.

By Halfunit |

The best place to view this lovely lighthouse is from the north end of Folly Beach. Take East Ashley Avenue to the very end and park where you can. Make sure all four tires are off the roadway when you park or you risk getting a ticket. Then be prepared to walk. There is probably a mile of paved road, followed by a 1/4 mile of sand dunes. This is a miserable walk on a hot day, so I suggest you do it in the morning before it gets hot. It would be nice if they would consider ferrying people to the end of the island via golf carts.

By EOMoby |

Visited here today. We were amazed to see 15 or 20 porpoises swimming between the lookout at the end of Folly Beach & Morris Island. We would have loved to be able to go over to the lighthouse itself.

By Tanya Tulp |

We didn’t take a tour of this beach, we just went on our own to see the lighthouse and drift wood. This beach is so quiet and peaceful, it’s a bit of a walk to get there but so worth it. I would say this was one of my highlights from our trip. We were able to get amazing pictures and just walk along the beach with our feet in the water.

By momdzall |

Go to the end of Ashley Ave and park. Walk on the paved path to the end, then there's a sandy path that takes you to the water and gorgeous view of the lighthouse. Was a very easy walk. Can also see the bridge in the background. Enjoyed it!

By PaulandCynthia J |

We have experienced the beauty of this lighthouse many times. We go to the end of Folly Island and park in the cul de sac and access the beach by the old government road. As you crest the dune, you get an amazing view of the lighthouse.

By angelaohedgepeth |

We found decent views of Morris Lighthouse by going all the way down to the northeast end of East Ashley at Folly Beach and walking the mostly paved walk to the shore. The tide was beginning to go out. Closer pictures would have been possible at low tide. Liked the quaint cottages of Folly Beach.

By Leslie L |

Short walk to a little beach...the lighthouse is just beyond the beach. Nice excursion.

I recomend it for families with children

By Phillipa |

The drive is too much. This place is far. You have to walk the last distance. We recommend not coming to this place at all.

By Troy J |

My Wife and i have been coming to Charleston for four years straight and always visit this area. It's a great place for photography and to feel the Southern beach life. The view of the lighthouse is a little piece off but with a good lens you can really see a lot of detail. The only thing that really ticks me off is the amount of graffiti on the way there and even on some of the rocks down by the shoreline. It is worse than our last visit a year ago.I would like to say too the inconsiderate hoodlums who are doing this, nobody gives a dam if you are in love with Lisa or Jennifer likes Bill.I'm almost positive that you wouldn't admit your affections to the police if it meant going to jail for vandalism.I understand that the punks who did this will never read my review but still,it just needs to stop, have some respect.Other than this,i always look forwards to my next visit.

By Cortney E |

Great beach to walk with the best views. Loved the nature over the house in the back. Many signs warning against swimming because of rip currents.

By R P |

drive to the east end of the island until it dead ends. get out your car and walk thru the old coast guard station that is now a park, about a 1/4 mile on old pavement. crest a large dune and there it is across the inlet. you cannot get to it by foot as it is on its own island due to erosion, but the views are very photographic. sunrise is fantastic as it rises behind the lighthouse due to Folly's east/west orientation the beach is great here, but no swimming due to dangerous currents.

By William E |

you can't get right out to the lighthouse but it is an interesting walk out to look at it. You can see that no amount of money or work will save this lighthouse...

By Gail E |

We easily found a parking spot late afternoon, then walked along the sandy path to the ocean's shore to see this lighthouse! You need binoculars or telescopic camera, but the view is wonderful! If you love lighthouses, don't miss it!

By 2-Lane-Traveler |

The lighthouse is beautiful once you reach it. To view the lighthouse you need to walk apx 1/4 mile on a trail to the beach and then climb to the top of the sandy ridge to view the lighthouse. Limited parking on the street, which make extend your walk by 1/4 mile.

By tawny1956 |

You can get decent views of the lighthouse by walking the paved walkway. It’s a short andeasy walk, about 1/2 mile round trip. The surfaceis covered with chalk like graffiti, which were normally bother me but for some reason was a pleasant touch.

By mjcrooksmomof3 |

Glad I had read a few trip advisor reviews or we would never have found this place. The lighthouse is best seen from the end of Folly Beach which is on James Island. You drive to the end of Ashley Avenue and walk either down a paved path or along the beach to see the lighthouse. The walk on the beach was very tranquil and beautiful but bring proper footwear or you will take half the beach home in your shoes. It is a no swimming beach due to the harsh surf. The lighthouse is offshore. Grea for photos!

By Cynthia B |

How this light can still be standing is amazing. It is surrounded by water, and can only be appraoched by boat , kayak, or on foot at low tide. It is an impressive lighthouse.
We did not start our walk on the paved walkway. We took the right hand, sandy trail straight to the beach. We enjoyed our short beach walk to the left, to the point and around a seawall, ending up across from the light house. We returned to our car on the grafitti path others mentioned.

By gene k |

It is a bit of a drive to get out here on Folly beach but it is worth it. Parking is skimpy. You can walk to the lighthouse by the beach or go through a long abandoned military site where building foundations and floors still exist. The lighthouse was built in the 1870's and looks like it. It is a unique place to spend a little time if you are a history buff. Go soon...not sure how much longer it will be standing.

By Michael A |

The Morris Island lighthouse is located on an island just off of Folly Beach. There is a nice walkway covered in very interesting graffiti from the parking lot through the dunes to a nice little beach where you can see the light. Pretty beach, a lot of shells and scenery to see. It's about a mile walk, but very easy.

By Darlinda C |

You have to walk a little to get to the lighthouse, but it's worth it! Just be sure when you park you car that ALL tires are off the road and that your car is facing the same way as the traffic flow, other wise you will get a parking ticket FOR sure on Folly Beach Island!!! This area of the beach is not for swimming because of the currents, but a great place for pictures! If doing this in the summer plan to do it early or late because of the heat!

By Anthony P |

This is likely one of the most beautiful sites here in Charleston. Once you park your car, there is a short walk to where you can view the lighthouse, which sits on Morris Island, not connected in any way to your little spit of land.

The Morris Island lighthouse appears to be sitting on a sandbar during low tide, and merely in the water during high tide. This island, however, was the location where Battery Wagner was established and fought for throughout the War Between the States. One of these particular engagements was featured in the movie "Glory".

The island itself became the victim of some well placed jettys, which changed the way the water flowed and eventually ate pretty much the entire island. This is all that is left. You will want to get your photos of this landmark now. Eventually, it too, will fall to the Atlantic; however, the locals are fighting hard to make sure that doesn't happen.

Please go visit this landmark while you are in Charleston. Its one of a kind!

By Celeste W |

Must come! The view is amazing. Lighthouse is so so, you can't really go any near to it. However, the view is breath taking and the wind blowing on you just relax you. I will overall experience is a 5 star. If you're only interested in the light house, then you'll find it boring. However, the whole package nature has to offer is amazing. Must go!

By MrsBoyer11 |

We drove over from Isle of Palms with our dogs. Sadly, no dogs allowed in the park. We parked to the right of the entrance and walked the expansive Beach to view the lighthouse.

By 2nXz |

We were surprised to see this lighthouse completely surrounded by the ocean. It's completely inaccessible, but still pretty to see, all alone out there. Folly Beach, where this is located near, is one of our favorite attractions and we took a long walk to see this lighthouse while we were there.

By Linda Z |

This is probably a hidden gem. This activity was about the best thing we did on our entire 4 days in Charleston. The weather was perfect to go out onto the river. The guide was very nice and informative. I was hoping for a mixture of pleasure and ecological learning, and that is what we got! Some very surprising and probably once in a lifetime sightings occurred on our trip.

By snowpeayah |

If you're headed here in the late afternoon, early evening, it seemed to be worthwhile to do the 20~ish min walk along the beach there, and then take the trail back. I say this because the wind was against our backs walking there so it was nice not to have sand blowing in our eyes.

You arrive there by heading to Folly Beach and then head north along E Ashley Ave. You can even get there by golf cart. This might also be a nice running loop for any runners vacationing in Folly Beach. There is free parking along the road.

Because of the tides, I wouldn't expect to be able to walk to the lighthouse. Looks like people get there by boat perhaps.

By menge12 |

This is truly, one of the most beautiful places to visit. We stayed on Folly beach in a house about a block or so from the old Coast Guard station. Just a short walk down the path to the beach area. Took some friends to see it who have never been to the area before. Worth the walk, go at sunset, just gorgeous!

By butterfly343432 |

We stayed on Folly and the walking trail to view the lighthouse was only 1/4 mile away. So we walked to it which was a very easy walk. It's beautiful. Out on an island so not sure you can get to it unless you're in a boat. Saw a lot of "Save the Lighthouse" signs so not sure if it's being considered to be torn down or what. I hope they don't. It's a cool sight to see!

By ceanderson3 |

We went to the north end of Folly Beach in the wildlife area and found a beautiful beach with a great view of the lighthouse. Even for mid-day, it wasn't crowded at all.

By ZL A |

Learned a lot about the eco system and lighthouse. Got to collect several nice shells from the beach.

By Sarah R |

We took a private boat tour to the island during low tide. We saw so many dolphins which was just an added bonus to all the pretty views here. You can nearly walk to the lighthouse at low tide.

By Mike's Girl |

This lighthouse is out on the water but we visited Folly Beach and walked the quarter-mile to it. It is a nice paved walk out to the beach. There is a driftwood area and also a jetty area that are secluded in February on a weekday, at least. It was very peaceful and the only other folks out were a family and their photographer.

By Lena D |

We were fortunate to have family that own a boat to go to this beach. However, there are companies that book tours to go out to this beach. We were there during the week and were for the most part there alone! We found beautiful shells, sharks' teeth and a few sand dollars! This place is gorgeous!!!!

By G G |

Wonderful lighthouse many people have forgotten. Look up the history, amazing, right?
The walk is a long one with nowhere to sit. Then the sand eeeeek.. do it anyway. Wow.
The tide was out so it looked soooo obtainable, but don't be fooled.

By deetrip13 |

Getting to the lighthouse from land required a short walk. once there the view from the secluded little beach was perfect. The wake was too rough for swimming but it great to just sit among the rocks or walk along the beach to admire the view. The view to the lighthouse was unlimited. Would definitely vist again

By David J |

Glad to be able to still see it there where it was built. Old style with nostalgia. Best viewed by boat to feel the enormity of it, but still encouraging from the shoreline at the end of Folly Island. It has not been restored to the point of allowing visitors entry, but it has a great mystique.Parking is limited and land viewing is affected by tides.

By PoompasDucks |

If there's any way to swing it, this lighthouse is a must see. Make sure to venture around the point where the dead trees and driftwood lay. Makes for beautiful photos.

By Ben J |

You will be lucky to find parking close to the park entrance. There is a walk of 1/4 of a mile to the beach area to view the lighthouse.

By Gregt33 |

It may be a problem to park, depending on the time of year. Tourist season might be a bit harder. The brief hike to the seashore is well worth the scene of the lighthouse out in the water.

By Sylvia L |

My husband and I enjoyed Folley beach so much. The light house could be seen on the east end of the island. It was a pretty far walk, but could be seen from a distance.

By Diana O |

It was a really nice walk back to the lighthouse. The path back was a fun walk.At the end of the path there is a beautiful view of the beach and lighthouse. It was so very peaceful. This made for some great pics and you can stay as long as you want and just enjoy the ocean and great views.

By Matt P |

I guess I picked the wrong time to go. Took a boat tour and was not able to walk up to it. The island has eroded to the point that the lighthouse is no longer on the island. It is several hundred feet off the island in the ocean. You cannot get to the island. Took some nice pictures of the lighthouse. Make sure to wear shoes there are ton of broken shells. Its a nice scenery.

By Ternstyle1952 |

Beautiful old lighthouse. You go through James Island to Folly Beach, turn left till you get to the end. There is no parking lot and parking is VERY limited, and we were there off season. You'll have a walk of about 3/8 to 1/2 mile (mostly paved) till it's in view. Sullivan's Island Lighthouse is also visible way off in the distance. We saw people dragging coolers to make a picnic of it. No facilities.

By lynnridge |

We visited in mid October on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon. We had read about the dolphins strand feeding near the lighthouse so headed out within an hour of low tide to see if we could see any. There is no parking lot but street parking along Ashley Avenue. There’s a paved quarter mile walk to the sand. Once we approached the sand, we headed left toward all of the dead driftwood trees. Once we passed that area and looked towards the lighthouse, we were in luck. There was a pod of dolphins strand feeding. We stayed about an hour. Kids built sandcastles on the beach while we watched the dolphins. Plenty of places to walk along the shore. No restroom facilities that we could see though.

By Amber0927 |

I know they are in the process of renovating Morris Island Lighthouse, and I'm sure that it will be more interesting once that is complete. I liked seeing it, but nothing blew me away about it. The lighthouse can only be accessed by boat. It leans slightly to the northeast, and they believe that was caused by an earthquake. Other than that, the paint is faded, and the stairs are rusty. It smells like mold, of course. It was cool to see the inside of a lighthouse, but I was hoping it would be more interesting than it was.

By Ed P |

Went out there late in the afternoon and the weather was perfect and the walk out there was really nice. It’s a flat and easy walk, paved until the end. Then a short walk on the clean beach. Just go to the end of E Ashley and park. The lighthouse is gorgeous but a ways out there. The pics are from my IPhone which is all I had on this trip. Sad I didn’t have my Nikon D750.

By MG117 |

I was in Folly for a girls' weekend and decided to go see the lighthouse one morning with coffee in hand. I used Google Maps and drove to nearly the end of Ashley Rd to what I deemed as close as I could get to it via car. I found a parking place among houses at end of the road (noted other cars parked beside the road as well) It was about a 15 minute walk along the beach to what I would call the point where you could see the lighthouse, still a bit in the distance but it was worth it. The walk was beautiful along the beach, which wasn't crowded and the ocean was gorgeous. Another 15 minutes or so and I was back to my car, but with a surprise...a parking ticket! I had parked inadvertently in front of a fire hydrant. There was a also a police/safety officer driving up in golf cart and his words were "oh he beat me to it". These folks take parking very seriously! And from now on I will too. There is parking what seems like way down the road where you are supposed to park and pay. I have read other reviews about the walk via the paved path, and though I wish I had known about that and been more careful with parking. However I rather enjoyed the beach walk so I would still recommend that.

By travelbug |

Such a gorgeous beach walk to see this lighthouse. Marsh on one side and ocean on the other, driftwood sculptures seem otherworldly. I highly recommend this delightful walk through nature.

By 90Evi |

This Lighthouse is well known to locals. You will have to walk on the West End of Foley Beach to reach it, it is well worth your time. On the way you will pass people fishing from shore, relaxing or taking a stroll.

By thomas g |

Went on a visit to this beautiful setting on a cool rainy Saturday, the ride out there and back was informative and we got to see Dolphins and learn about the ecosystem on the way there, the island itself was lovely we had it to our self, highly recommend this trip and our guide Luke was fantastic as well

By Jen14641660 |

About 1/4 mile down paved road to the beach. Lighthouse is out in the water but easily seen. Nice beach as well. We were able to take some really good pictures of it. Worth the walk.

By Bob S |

Was able to see this lighthouse from several places. Fort Moultrie, Fort Sumpter, and the Carnival Fantasy heading to the Bahamas. As a lighthouse enthusiast, hopefully this light can be stabilized for future generations to view.

By Leigh L |

It was a very nice view. We enjoyed the Walk to the Lighthouse and having the ability to see it. I am very infatuated with light houses and try to see all I can during my travels.

By Shannonyoung4210 |

Very nice walk to see the lighthouse. No where to part was part of our problem coming from Folly Beach. The butterflies were beautiful walking down to see it. You couldn't get up close to see it.

So here's the latest on the lighthouse. It's now a half-mile walk from side street parking. The road has been gated off. I see where the prior quarter-mile parking lot used to be. There is graffiti on the sidewalk but it's "DM luvs SD 4-ever" kind of stuff-- no artwork.

Please note there is absolutely no shade on the paved portion, the hilly sandy dune, nor the beach. It was a pretty unpleasant walk mid-July (it was 90° & humid & I'm 49 & carry extra weight), but I had rented a moped to get out there and I was determined!

The lighthouse is kinda cool as is the driftwood. There's no swimming due to the riptide. I definitely wouldn't drive from anywhere but elsewhere on Folly Island to experience this. I'd probably follow the other reviewers and go by tour boat in low tide.

Visited Morris Island via a nature cruise through Charleston Outdoor Adventures. Learned about the ecosystems in the area and got to spend about an hour on a very quiet and peaceful Morris Island with photo ops of the light house and searching for shells.

We venture out one day to find this place. It was fairly easy. Drove to Folly Beach and walked up the beach until we were fairly close to the lighthouse. You can't walk up to the lighthouse. There was one local there that said sometimes there was a sand bar to walk to it, but he still did not recommend doing it.

By Kathleen K |

Park the car and take the half mile hike to view the lighthouse. They are in the third stage (I believe) of preservation. I have been here several times and each time I marvel that this light is still standing.

By Jayjay099 |

It is sitting alone in the ocean:) You will stand on the shore and probably wish you could walk out and touch her, you can't:( Getting to it or should I say finding it can be a big challenge in itself:( Just take Folly Beach road till it dead ends in town:) Turn left and follow it still that dead ends, your there:) There is LITTLE parking:( If you find a spot, now you have to get out and follow the locked gated road until it ends. Then you walk straight ahead into the sand dunes. Total distance from the car to the shore line might me a mile. There is nothing back there:( So bathroom breaks are advised before hand:) On a warm day, take water:) I think they are trying to preserve the area, yet, so much more could be done in the closed off area to service the community wanting to see it. You will see where vandals have painted many things in this closed off area because it is so secluded:( It would make for a GREAT city park. Still, it's a great find:) And the driftwood trees on the beach make for a great photo spot

By wvbeachmom3 |

It was a nice day trip to the beach. Went specifically for the lighthouse. Apparently it's being remodeled but don't think anyone would even be able to get to the actual lighthouse without a small boat or kayak. Would be cool to go in

By Tom K |

The walk to the beach to view the lighthouse was an easy walk and the beach was so clean and pretty. The lighthouse is magnificent.

By Charming_Karl |

Since I read Doug Bostick's book about the Lighthouse, I have been wanting to see it. We took a Tideline Tours boat ride which got as close as you probably can. Because of the tide changes, it now sits on a small bit of sand in the middle of the water. Nevertheless, it makes for some great photo ops!

By DeAndria A |

You can't access this lighthouse so don't even try. There are fundraisers out to try and help save it from being destroyed. Please look into it and don't let a beautiful piece of history wash away.

By Donna H |

We heard from the locals this place is good for picking up driftwood, that is, if you can wriggle it from it's depths within the sand holding it captive. Several areas of beached wood washes up on shore and there are opportunities to pull some treasures out to take home as keepsakes.

By Mindy M |

Take a short walk out to the lighthouse and see this beauty standing in the middle of the water! You can't actually go up the lighthouse one foot but can see if from Folly Beach. Morris Island Lighthouse is in need of saving so make sure to pay at the enterance to help Save The Light....and leave a little extra if you can.

By Hale F |

Recommended for a morning beach walk away from the crowds and beach houses, just outside of Charleston. There aren't many folks there. It 15-20 minutes from downtown. Park your car and walk to the public beach. Serene, relaxing and the farther you walk, the fewer people you encounter. Gaze at the lighthouse , the fishing boats passing by, the surf. What more could you want?

By wetravelalot007 |

We learned of the Morris Island Lighthouse on the tour of Fort Sumter. We determined on that trip we would like to visit this lighthouse. So one afternoon we put it into our GPS. Although it says it is a Charleston attraction we had to leave Charleston to get close to it. Travel to Folly Island (which looks like an interesting place in itself) is required to get to this lighthouse. We parked our car alongside the road. The walk to the lighthouse's closest point is easily over a half of a mile. We did it in the heat of the day, so a change of clothes might be required if you follow our example. You end up on a secluded sandy beach that allows you to see the lighthouse still in the distance (approximately one mile away). We enjoyed this quest to find this lighthouse. However it was very anti-climactic not being able to get any closer than you can.

By Rachel F |

Very quiet and beautiful spot to hangout. Also great for photos. The .25 mile walk in is down a paved path and perfect length for my kids to get their stroll on. We actually rented bikes near downtown and biked the whole way down and back which was a round trip of 10 miles. No swimming allowed because of the currents so bring some sand toys and a blanket.

By caitlyn m |

Nice walk. Worthwhile if you want to do some outdoor things in Charleston especially in spring or fall.

By C6475BQasml |

We (me, husband and 8yo daughter) took a private boat charter with Island Hopper Charters to Morris Island. Our guide recommended a low tide visit. You can't get to the lighthouse anymore because the land around it has washed away due to the jetties they built decades ago. We saw a tone of beautiful seashells and sand dollars. It was a beautiful and serene setting, temperature was upper 60's and the sand was hard and compact enough which made it easily walkable. We felt the money was well worth the experience.

What a wonderful site to see the Morris Island Lighthouse in all it’s splendor from Folly Beach. Worth the walk down the beach

By jlantern3 |

This os a classic old lighthouse that one can see from the northern end of Folly Island. Very stunnung for oics. Worth the walk

By Cierra F |

It is beautiful during the day. We were lucky to get there when the tide was out and we could walk around the point. The lighthouse is pretty, it's too bad you can't walk over to it. We found a few shells and a couple starfish. They should try to clean up the graffiti on all of the concrete that's left over and on the sign telling you about the lighthouse.

By Hale F |

We take a morning beach walk at Morris Lighthouse whenever we are in Charleston. It is beautiful, peaceful and uncrowded. There is no development on this beach and nothing to buy . There is a short walk to the beach on a paved road.

By Taylor B |

Morris Island Lighthouse is located on Morris Island on the southern side of the entrance to Charleston Harbor in South Carolina, north of the city of Folly Beach. Named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, it is unusual because it now stands several hundred feet offshore. When constructed in 1876, the light was approximately 1,200 feet from the water's edge. However, the construction in 1889 of the jetties which protect the shipping lanes leading to Charleston Harbor altered ocean currents, resulting in the rapid erosion of Morris Island and the destruction of many structures and historical sites such as Fort Wagner, which was depicted in the movie Glory. By 1938, the shoreline had reached the lighthouse, forcing its automation as it was no longer safe or practical to keep it manned. In 1962, it was decommissioned and replaced by a new light located on Sullivan's Island at the north end of the harbor. Today, Morris Island Lighthouse can't be accessed but you can charter a private boat to tour the island and experience the view of the lighthouse and the surrounding harbor and the natural wonders of the island. The lighthouse is 161 feet tall and cost $149,993.50 to construct. In 2010, a project was completed that stabilized the lighthouse by placing a ring of concrete around the existing foundation.

We walked the beach to see the lighthouse. First off, the walk was so pleasant! We really enjoyed it. Second, the lighthouse was great to see. I love lighthouses, so I was thrilled to come around the dunes and see it!

By xjordanx21 |

The light house was so cool to see. Not very far away off shore so you can see it perfectly. The beach is also very nice with amazing wildlife nearby.

By G4flyfish |

The Morris Island Lighthouse is a must see while visiting Charleston. Located less than a 20 minute drive from the Charleston Historic District. You do have to park and walk to see the light house but it is definitely worth the short walk.

By David B |

Beautiful, somewhat remote old lighthouse with a neat graffiti filled (mostly tasteful) walk out from the parking lot.

By Krystyna11 |

Went later in the afternoon and the lighting was great for taking pictures. It is at the north end of Folly Beach. Park outside the gate and take a walk on a paved path to the lighthouse. At the end of th unassuming path opens up to a beautiful view of the beach, sand dunes and grasses and the lighthouse. The lighthouse is surrounded by water so it is not accessible. Take time to visit. Very nice beach to sit and relax.

By Indianagogirl |

While you can't go out to the light, or go in it. It's a lovely place to visit -- especially to catch a sunrise. The dolphins are active in the area, and the lighthouse is a good point of interest for photographers.

By Anna W |

The boat trip out to Morris Island lighthouse is very educational about the ecosystem. Can see a lot of dolphins and birds. You can pick up lots of shells on the island. Not much else to do on the island. The island has eroded to the point that the lighthouse is no longer on the island. It is several hundred feet off the island in the ocean. You cannot get to the island. A bit disappointed about not getting to the lighthouse, the information provided by the marine biologist/boat captain still made the trip worth taking.

By Charleston W |

Folly's Favorite Lighthouse seen from across Charleston. A favorite of Brides and Grooms from Charleston Wedding Service, as well as a reference point on any walk about from Charlestonian Properties.

By Linda D |

After driving in some extremely slow bumper to bumper traffic we arrive to find gates closed an no entry to the road leading to the lighthouse. It was raining and no way to see the lighthouse even from the beach. Disappointed.

By kerrtravelplans |

First you can only get there by water. If you get there the building is closed and has been for years. Serious repairs to save the building have been underway for a very long time. However , it offers camera buffs some great opportunities. If drive you can walk thru the "old Coast guard base"closed) and be on the beach a hundred yards away but separated by a very dangerous breach between Folly Island and Morris Island. Don't let the sign at the old base entrance stop you. It is there for show.

By Melissa S |

Morris Island is a beautiful island that is pristine, great for finding ocean treasures or for walking in the footsteps of history. It is one of my favorite islands...

By sc40sumthin |

take the short walk out to the beach to view the lighthouse. beautiful view! very peaceful on the beach.

By Donna L |

Great to see this beautiful light being preserved. Nice views with a short walk up the road. Unspoiled beach.

By BrianRhonda |

We were visiting from Atlanta and really wanted a memorable sunrise. Get to the parking area about 5am (a flashlight is a must). Drive Ashley Rd on Folly Beach as far north as possible. Make sure when you park, both of your wheels are off the road or you will get a ticket. The 1/4 mile walk begins on old paved roadway. Last 200 yards or so is Beach sand through some dunes. Once on the beach I suggest going to the left of the rocks. The lighthouse is about 1/2 mile off shore. It is closer than it looks in photographs. If you catch the tides just right you can go around the point and have a perfect view of the lighthouse with the sunrise in the background. Hurricane Hugo changed the tidal areas so much that the trees at the end of the island are dieing which creates beautiful "driftwood" trees. Well worth the effort. We suggest eating breakfast at The Lost Dog Cafe afterward.

By Lucy |

A pleasant surprise on accessibility and view of the light house. We drove to Folly Beach and parked. Walked about half mile to view the light house. The area is beautiful and peaceful

By Laura B |

Although as other reviewers note you can walk from Folly Beach when tides are right, it's magical to arrange instead for a boat from Folly Island Public Boat landing to take you and your group out through the marshlands to the Morris Light at low tide. Magical views, super shelling, and don't be surprised if you have dolphins accompanying you on the way out or back - or both! Perfect spring or early summer activity.

By Suzanne D |

We've visited Morris Island a few times and it's always so peaceful and quiet there. Not many visitors as you need a boat to get over and visit. If you want some beautiful shells this is the beach to go to...you will not be disappointed. Wear shoes that can withstand water and a rough/shelly beach though. Check the tide pools for sand dollars and starfish when you go...just make sure to not disturb them if they are still alive. Pack a picnic lunch and some sunblock and enjoy the day there. And a camera to take in all the beautiful scenery and views.

By edoc1132 |

Enjoyed learning about the history of the place and the view over the water. Nice place to take a walk on a sunny afternoon.

By Robin8037 |

If you go to Folly Beach, this is a bonus side trip. Take Ashley to the end and walk a closed road about a quarter of a mile to get there. You can't see it from where you'll have to park. No dogs allowed. That was a bummer since I had mine with me but luckily I was able to leave her with someone in order to make the hike. It's a cool photo op at sunrise.

By anne w |

This trip was so worth it! The parking can be a bit challenging, but once you get a spot, it is a short walk through the park to the area where you can best view the lighthouse. The area is also nice for a picnic. It's a natural setting, and is relaxing. The only drawback, though, is there are no restrooms.

By AllysonNetFink |

As a Charleston native I make this stop every trip home.. We bring friends and family often when we get over to Folly Beach and are near The Morris Island Lighthouse.

By Ashley |

You can get views of 5he lighthouse from the north side of Folly Beach. Park on the shoulder of the road and walk through the gate. There will be a stretch of paved road that is covered in graffiti. The walk isnt bad. There is not a ton of shade so it can get very hot. Bring water or a fan if you want to be more comfortable. We are a family with 3 small children and they all did the walk no problem. You have to walk up a small dune. Uphill in dry sand is more difficult, but still easy if you are able-bodied. There are a ton of shells on this beach. It was pretty quite while we were there. A few people swimming but thats it. There are no bathrooms, showers, etc. If you are looking for a quiet afea of beach that is not commercialized then this is it!

By KR8985 |

this was the last stop for me and my friends trip to charleston. we parked at the cul de sac and walked the 1/4 mile. there are NO porta potties or bathrooms along the way, so definitely go before you get there..the beach is gorgeous, and the light house was neat even if you aren't close to it. I wish we could have stayed longer and walk a little farther down the beach but the no bathroom thing sort of freaked us out..lol

By carla-mina |

do It late in the afternoon loved the walk on the beach seen a dozen or so Dolphins in the cove that was very nice

By Jeff R |

We love visiting the lighthouse vista at the end of Folly Beach. It is sort of a long walk from the available parking so people with mobility issues may want to pass but the view is one of the nicest in the area.

By Dave A |

The path from the end of the street is mostly paved so it’s easy for most anyone to traverse. This stop pairs nicely with the pier an hour or two before sunset.

By brd1ngpstr |

If you like to visit historical lighthouses, this is a good trail for you. It is not so much of a trail as it is mostly a paved road. The last bit is a not-so-hard sandy hill to get up and down. The view is great. Not only do you get to see a great view of the lighthouse, but also some saltwater bleached oak trees, and some tidal pools if you go at low tide. Go at low tide.

By Kim O |

Take the walk. It's a beautiful beach and area. Go explore it. Marsh meets the ocean. It's just amazing to see. Drive from town, then park and walk.

By LloydRice |

When I was a young boy the lighthouse was close to the shore of Folly Island. We used to crab in the gulleys around the base of the lighthouse at low tide. It is in danger of being lost to the acts of nature but efforts have been made to stabilize the foundation and save it. It is a jewel worth saving.

By Susan |

Try the COA sunset tour for a great way to learn about the area and the wildlife and see lots of dolphins!!

By Scott D. |

I little hidden gem off the beaten path. It's worth taken a walk down the beach to view the lighthouse. It would be better if you were able to access or get inside the lighthouse, however, it was still neat to view it and take pictures. I'd recommend taking a trip when in Charleston to view it. Check out our blog!

By HappyKyle |

You can see it from the north tip of Folly Beach or you can boat up to Morris island and get pretty close to it. I hope it gets restored one day.

By LynnBurnett81151 |

Great place to get sunrise pictures oh the harbor. Makes an iconic beach picture. Just a beautiful lighthouse.

By Georgiarover |

This is a brief walk on a sandy path to the shore, where you can see Morris Island Lighthouse across the water. There's a beach with driftwood and rocks with breakers.

By br0za1205 |

In town for a wedding so took a walk in a local park on Folly Island with great views of the lighthouse. A nice area.

By Peachie59 |

Over a half mile walk but well worth it. Beautiful beach you can walk on. Well worth he trip and walk out.

By arianamitchell120 |

I went in winter so the lighthouse was inaccessible by boat but it was still very nice! We walked down to the water's edge through the park and while a bit of a walk it was definitely worth it. The beach was quiet and offered a great view of the lighthouse.

By Patricia S |

The walk down to the beach was great! The paved walkway easily accommodated my husband's wheelchair. The beach was not crowded and we spent a good bit of time just enjoying seeing the lighthouse and all the driftwood formations. So worth the walk!

By Terry S |

Have to give a rating of only a 3 as we visited the lighthouse at night on Christmas Day - one of 2 days (New Years the other) that they actually light up the lighthouse. Saw a story on the local news and had no idea about the lighthouse, but decided to give it a try.

Was aware that parking is an issue for sure, but got there a little early, so we got a close parking spot along side the road in front of peoples homes - as there is a gate blocking vehicle traffic into the area along Folly Beach. Most of the path is paved and flat which is great (lots of graffiti), but the final 100 yards or less is all sand and at night without any light would be quite treacherous - so CARRY A NIGHT LIGHT (phone, flashlight, headlamp, etc.) if you do it in the dark.

Knew the lighthouse was out and away from the beach / land area and so no actual up close views. The lights were OKAY, but really hard to take good pictures as it is very dark and only lights are from the lighthouse. Maybe expected some color lights due to being Christmas / Holidays - but none.

Lots of people did show up and it was quite brisk (windy) and cool, so wear a good jacket / coat along with layered clothing.

Getting pictures probably best in day time and you can actually see the "natural habitat" area that leads up to seeing the lighthouse. Road (Ashley Ave) is very narrow with people parking on the side of the street for homes, beach access (Folly Beach), and if going for the lighting - slow is the word on that stretch.

Although there are signs stating - " NO PETS" in the area - many people brought their pets anyway.

By erin3978 |

It is a short walk from the public parking area to the beach to view the lighthouse. We did not go to the lighthouse, but we did view it from the beach. The beach was clean and wide enough to set up a blanket and picnic. The water was warm and nice for wading. If you walk along the closed road rather than the beach, be prepared for a lot of graffiti. I am not easily offended, but if you are or you have small children, you may want to avoid this section, as some of the graffiti is NSFW.

By Cynthia L |

We spent three hours here looking for shells and other artifacts from Fort Sumter washed up on shore. It's very quiet, very deserted and lovely. There are no facilities on the island so come prepared for that. You are in the harbor of Charleston but away from the world. It is pretty cool when a cargo ship sails by though. I highly recommend you charter a boat and spend a few hours with a guide on the island.

By Jo Marie B |

This is such a beautiful lighthouse and has so much history behind it. Worth taking a trip to the tip of Folly Beach or an adventure to the island itself from one of the many boat tours.

By Angela P |

Great views of the lighthouse, ravenel bridge and sullivans island lighthouse. Its a short pretty walk. Great photo opportunities!!

By Donna C |

Short hike to view the lighthouse in the distance. Definitely worth checking out, we took a lot of pics!

By porter_osborne |

Light house is a fun sight, BUT the real interest is the history of Morris Island. This is the site of one of the last battles of the civil war, fought after Lee surrendered. Yes the Civil war began and pretty much ended in Charleston. Nominally the battle at Morris Is was the basis for the movie Glory (D Washington, M Broderick). Also access Morris Is from Folly Is, and take the ecotour. Ask about timing to allow observation of dolphins herding schools of fish ashore as a feeding strategy.

By TravelingMama |

If you take a boat out at particularly low tide you can get close to the light house. You cannot go up in it but it is a beautiful landmark. Shell hunting is great around the area as it is only accessible by boat. The views are pretty amazing.

By Grandna W |

Drive to the end of Folley Beach. Park on side of road. It's only 1/4 mile walk to this quiet beach. Stroll down the beach for photos of the Lighthouse. It is a quiet beach. We enjoyed digging in the sand and playing in the water. There are also two geocaches there for followers of that hobby.

By nitewalk6 |

A short walk from the end of Folly Beach to the closest point to the lighthouse offers great photo opportunities especially at sunset.

By Lisa M |

For me this lighthouse and beach combine the elements that make Charleston a popular destination: history, beach and nature. Granted, it is a bit remote and you definitely need to be able to hike from Folly Beach. Parking is a bit of a challenge. We've also made the trip by COA which was wonderful! Sunrise & sunset are especially breathtaking. At lowtide, my children & I explore the tide pools. The marsh is beautiful and perfect for bird-watching. We've made lots of happy memories on this beach. Perfect site for family photos!

By Lauren K |

We drove to the end of the road where the paved trail begins. We were able to park easily on the side of the road at the beginning of the paved trail, although it was the middle of the day on a Tuesday so not busy. Short walk on the paved road with some cool graffiti to the sandy beach with a beautiful view of the surrounding nature and the lighthouse. You cannot get to the light house from that trail, but it is a great view. Saw very few people and it was very peaceful. Note - dogs not allowed!

By EmilyandBill |

The walk is not that short, but it was worth it. We walked the road to the lighthouse, but then opted to walk the beach back. It’s worth it if you like lighthouses and the beach!

By Audrey P |

We took a sunset tour of Morris Island. We got to walk the beach, pick up shells and take tons of pictures. It was a great experience.

By Heart4Home |

I love lighthouses so wanted to stop to see this one. We drove to the end of the road at Folly Beach and parked and then walked about 10 minutes out to see this lighthouse. It is close enough that you can see it well, but it isn't accessible. We took some photos and enjoyed the quiet beach for about 30 minutes. It is a nice stop if you are in the nearby area, but not worth making a special trip to this location to view.

By HMCola |

We went out to Folly Beach, and traveled all the way to the end of the road, to see the Morris Island Lighthouse, is a bit of a walk but not too bad at all. Free to access. We just parked on the road, although it does say no parking. We went for the sunrise, so was pretty dark, no lights on trail. The sunrise was pretty cloudy but still an awesome beach! Some cool old trees, graffitti, starfish, and shells make for great photos! Was gray and a little eery when we were there. A little cool in the morning. I think there may be a dog beach near by, saw some dogs running about. You have to see the light house from a far, and from what i've read shouldnt swim in the water, but can easily head back down to the main part of folly beach for more sunbathing and swimming, and restaurants! While here visit Lost Dog Cafe in town!

By Char S |

The light is no longer connected to land. I got some beautiful pics from Morris Island beach and across the salt marsh from the bow of the Absolute Reel Screamer, a charter boat captained by Gresh Meggett - a local whose grandmother used to play with the lighthouse keeper's children when she was a little girl. I learned that the lighthouse was originally black and white! This light is a classic lighthouse and is an interesting contrast to the more contemporary design of the Sullivan's Island light. Eat lunch at the Wash Out if you decide to adventure into Folly Beach.

By Rajreviews |

Went there on a weekend and loved the beauty of the place. With the expanse of the sea in the background this place brings about a picnic in its self.

By William C |

The view at Morris Island was truly stunning. Everyone we met was so awesomely friendly. The kite surfers spent 30 minutes talking to us about their experiences. There is ample cheap public parking within walking distance to the beach. This is a must see area.

By newyorkdoll4 |

Took a boat out to here with Outdoor Adventures. They pull up on he beach and you can walk along. The lighthouse is beautiful. Very atmospheric. Really very peaceful.

By Megan N |

This Island is not accessible by car, there are boat riding options from the surrounding marshlands that gets you to this Island. The tour takes around 2 to 2:30 hours. It is a great Island for shelling - dress in layers- I wish I had brought my shawl to cover myself the wind chill is gutsy. We brought some wine and cheese and enjoyed the Island even more! ;)

By dave2580 |

We go here for the photo opportunities.
Whether it's late evening sunsets or early
mornings, you can capture great shots of the lighthouse and beach life. The Folly Beach side has some interesting views.

By Threeladybug |

As others have stated, this is not the type of lighthouse you can climb. You can, however, have a look at it from the end of Ashley Ave on Folly Beach. It's a little bit of a walk but nothing too strenuous. The view of the lighthouse is wonderful and there's a bit of beach with some large rocks that make it perfect for photo op!!

By V4067SOsandras |

This was my first visit to the Morris Island Lighthouse. The lighthouse itself stood there with its magical sense of being. The base to the US Coast Guards barracks could be seen there as well. Unfortunately, it was covered with graffiti. As well as the rocks there along the beach. It's sad to me that there is such disrespect for pieces of history. On a bright note ... It looks like there is an organization trying to preserve the lighthouse from being lost at sea. You can get info at Save the light .org

By Steve H |

Morris Island is great place to photograph the lighthouse. Although I maybe a bit biased because it is where I got engaged to my wife.

By Jklcassidy |

Took the dogs. Beautiful lighthouse out in the water due to erosion over time from hurricanes. Beware of all the cookaburs. Our Shih Tzu had to go to the groomers after. She was covered. Lol

By Karen S |

Views of the lighthouse are possible at the end of Folly Beach by walking about half a mile on paved road or by walking along the beach. Free parking was available along the road We prefer walking on the beach. The lighthouse is a distance from shore, so you can’t get close.

By Richard F |

We had a fun day enjoying Morris Island. We took the hike out to the beach and the lighthouse. It is a long hike out but, well worth the time as the views are spectacular. The beach is quiet and very clean. And it was not at all crowded with people. The lighthouse is out in the water so you can not get close unless you have kayak and paddle out.

By Terri B |

Our guide Trip gave stopped along the way and gave us great information. We learned SO much and even saw dolphins. When we got to Morris island I was in awe of all the shells. I found an awesome conch shell. I would take this trip again 100%

By Jade G |

This is easily one of my favorite spots in Charleston. This used to be a secret spot for the locals but it has gotten pretty popular over the years.

By AnitaTim |

First you can only access the lighthouse from the water. We entered into our GPS Morris Island lighthouse. It takes you as far as you can on the road. You have to park along side or one of the beach access parking ($7-$10). You can take the paved road to the beach for the closest look of the lighthouse, however, it is warmer and filled with mosquitos...we found this out on the walk back to our car. However, if you take the beach access and head in that direction it might be a bit longer but it is a better view, cooler and no bugs. We pretty much had the beach to ourselves. Might have passed a few people but we were there around 10am and it was late October. The weather couldn't have been better. It was so peaceful there. Great time to reflect and enjoy God's beautiful world.

By Connie F |

Was worth the walk down to the end. We got to see dolphins playing. It's just a shame that the land is slow dissolving into the ocean and the light house is no longer manned. Small secluded beach area.

By ModerationForMe |

If you go to the far north-east end of Folly Beach you can park and walk through the Lighthouse Heritage Preserve. It's a beautiful area, and you can get some nice photos of the lighthouse.

If the tide is low, you can take a great stroll along the 'creek' towards the north-west. On my last visit there were six dolphin swimming just feet from the tip of the island.

By Mike M |

We went to the lighthouse just to kill a little time before heading back to the hotel. You have to park and walk a little ways, but the walk did us good after a big meal. The walk is mostly on a paved street that cars are no longer allowed to use. The area is a bird sanctuary and is quite and peaceful. The small but quaint beach is inviting. The lighthouse is not accessible by land. You can see it just a short distance off shore, but you would need a paddle board or boat to get over to it. All lighthouses are majestic in their own right, but there doesn't seem to be anything too spectacular about this one in general. Nice, easy walk and nice photo opps.

By Kyle G |

I love walking the beach to check out the lighthouse. Such a beautiful sight. You can get some pretty wonderful pictures of the lighthouse as well. Enjoy.

By Chuck G |

Drive to the north end of Ashely Rd. on Folly Beach; 1/4 mi. paved walk to view point. Can also see Ravenel Bridge.

By Hung T |

Came here half an hour before the sunset. There's a parking lot nearby which you can pay via phone (the zone is 8463). After a short walk you'll end up at one of the most beautiful beaches you'll see. Dead trees add to the mystique of the place. Far in the distance is the lighthouse, which you can get to with a boat. Hang out here with some lounge chairs if you brought them and watch as dolphins swim back and forth with the incredible sunset as the backdrop.

This was recommended as a must see on Folly Island, but I think the timing we chose killed the fun. We went at sunset and the mosquitoes were so overwhelming bad that it was not worth it. Swarms and swarms of them. The graffiti road on the way in was interesting and the lighthouse was nice for a short photo opt, but nothing too stunning.

Go to Folly Beach and turn left and go all the way to the end. Park and walk the half mile to the water. IN front of you is the Morris Island Lighthouse. Walk to the left and you can walk for miles along the waterways and find great shells and you may even see a pod of dolphins that lives out there.

Well worth the walk to get close enough to see this light house, the walk was beautiful and the lighthouse was gorgeous especially with the birds flying past it and seeing dolphin swimming near it. Would go again. (the start of the walk is an old road that is now closed, it is interesting although that part is not so pretty, but when you get to the beach it is beautiful with jetties, driftwood and lots of plant life)

Beautiful sight. Peaceful walk to get to it. Ten minute walk at most. Observe unique tree trunks. Surrounded by the ocean. Decommissioned.

We actually drove around for an hour and a half to try and get to a place we could view the lighthouse but we never found it. I put the address in my Garmin and it took us literately to a dead end. A resident happened to be out in his yard and we asked him how to get to the lighthouse and he just laughed. He asked "did you follow your GPS here?" of course we said yes and he said well you are not the first. He told us the only way to actually see it was by boat. Wish we knew that before wasting the gas.

Great day and a great tour guide Luke. He was very knowledgeable and I so enjoyed the boat ride and seeing dolphins, pelicans, and a shark. Thank you so much for providing great memories. Leone Vigil

Capt Gresh took us on our tour and we had a great time, used a castnet to show water dwellers in the marsh, saw dolphins, walked Morris Island, learned about the Lighthouse from an 8th generation resident of the area.

At the end of the road, a short walk down an abandoned area, now a park you will see the lighthouse off in the distance. You can't GO to the lighthouse because its offshore. The beach area is real nice though.

Took the kayak out to point and had a great time on the island. This is definitely the best fishing spot on the island, and had an awesome experience walking in the park and backwater inlets. Caught a nice meal of bluefish by the jetty. It’s a decent walk from the parking area but totally worth it.

While we were down at Charleston, we planned to go to the Morris Island Lighthouse. This is like the main lighthouse in the Charleston area. How to get to it was a little confusing but we asked people at the Charleston Visitors Center and they helped us. When you get to Folly Beach Island and you come to where you have to make a left or a right, you go left literally all the way down the road. It will come to a part where you can't go anymore. There, you have to park off to the side of the road (just stay off people's driveways). You then take the path at the end of the road down a little ways and you'll get to beach. Once you walk up the little hill, you'll start to see the top and you'll then be on the beach. I would suggest doing this in the morning sometime because it can kind of be a little far of a walk, especially if it is hot. You can't actually go up to the lighthouse because of the tide but it is still beautiful to see. We found a lot of seashells at this part of the beach too. I would say this is a must do at least once. It is nice and romantic for couples, but also fun for kids and anyone that wants to look for seashells!

Nice drive to Foley beach. Parking is 1/4 mile from parking area to the sand dune you cross over to get to the beach to see the lighthouse. Had raging plantar fasciitis so it was tough. The lighthouse is on a spit of land far out in the channel and you can not get near it, but it is a lovely sight.

This is a must do for any lighthouse enthusiast or beach lover, very peaceful, scenic and worth the trip!

So I'm a little biased because I proposed to my girlfriend while walking to the lighthouse. I've been coming to Folly Beach since I was a kid, and the highlight is to walk down the beach to the lighthouse. The beach there is quiet, you get to see Charleston in the distance, and the old lighthouse just brings a bit of history over you. Definitely worth the walk!

If you ever get a chance, please drive to the end of Folly Beach and make the short walk to see this amazing lighthouse. My first visit was 30 years ago and it’s still absolutely beautiful!!

The lighthouse is a good distance away. It's a nice photo op. But it's out on a barrier island, which we knew.
The walk to the beach was nice. It was nice walking around that beach area for awhile and seeing the lighthouse from afar.

We took a boat our to Morris Island. It was well worth the visit. It was nice being out on the beach and seeing the lighthouse.
