We decided to walk the trail up to Mount Roberts and take the gondola down. We walked from the ship port, the trail was well signed posted up until we passed over a bridge then unfortunately the trail was obscured by parked cars, we ended up walking to the perseverance trail so we knew we had gone too far, we had to back track. We asked for directions and got on the Mount Roberts trail, be sure to keep an eye out for the path we were not the only ones that missed it that day.
Once on the trail it is 2 miles of steep inclines along rugged uneven terrain. I am not an experienced hiker, nor in great shape and I found it challenging, but worth it when you got to the top. Wear proper hiking boots as it is muddy near the top even on a dry warm day. If you are fit and a regular hiker it’s probably a breeze. Allow yourself 2 hours if you are slower like me but the trail says an hour and half is typical.
Gondola ride down allowed for great views.

This walk is up all the way. I am 58 and don't do a lot of hiking but we made it to the tramway station no worries. We were not in a hurry so we enjoyed the scenery and took our time. Once at the station, we had a drink and something to eat....along with the crowd from the ships, then continued the rest of the way pass the snow line to the top. The views are incredible and worth the effort. We didn't make it to the top as the cloud came in and reduced visibility. We sat just below the cloud for a while to take in the view.
We took the tramway down and celebrated our day with some crab and a beer......cheers

very nice walk plenty of dead Salmon throughout the town as they come down to spawn then die off .We went to the site of the first Brothel they are very proud of this street I .took a free shuttle back into town

We had a lovely hike from the Tram to the top and the view was great. The activities at the Tram site near the top were fine and informative. We were told that the hike down was 2.5 miles and would take about an hour and a half. No mention was made of the treacherous nature of the trail or that it would come out a long distance away from the original tram location. We are failrly sturdy hikers but came out at the edge of town after over 3 hours. The trail was washed out in several areas making a walking stick an absolute necessity to negotiate climbing over limbs. I lost one toe nail and another blackened one due to the significant downhill grade and pounding against the front of my hiking shoes. Never happened before. If you go, take extra water, and be prepared for a 3 hour serious trek down steep switchback grades. Take your time. Folks should be warned that this is not and easy or even moderate hike---strenuous. Beautiful but treacherous and the operators missed the mark badly with information about this.

It took me approximately two hours to walk from the Visitor Center across town to Basin Road and up the trail to arrive at the gift shop/restaurant and return to town via the tram. I popped into Rainbow Foods on 4th Street to purchase a protein bar on my way through town and found a great local selection of cards to mail loved ones. I took advantage of the $10 or more purchase for a complimentary tram ride. Note: the trail was quite muddy and slippery on May 22nd, but it remained a fairly easy climb.

Enjoyed but this, however, is not easy. About 1700 foot climb in 2 miles. Trail is muddy in most spots and the tree roots are exposed in order that you have to navigate through. Do the math, 1700 foot climb in 2 to 2.5 miles means the whole trail is uphill and not just a slight incline. While difficult going up, it is probably more dangerous coming down. However, while on the hike watch the local (probably seasonal) people running up the trail with their dogs. They have to be in great shape. Reward is the bar at the top. Welcome sight after a tough hike.

Just walk 5 min uphill from the Juneau International Hostel & you'll find the start of the trail. The hike itself (10 or 11km?) is very scenic and the view at the top across the Channel is very worthwhile.
Don't forget your water bottle.

This use to be my best escape for a nice afternoon walk when I used to work on Cruise Ships. Every 7th day our ship use to be in Juneau Alaska during the peak season time. Often I used to come out around 1100am and take a tram up to this mountain and do this hike on Mount Roberts Trail. I have loved every bit of it specially the weather. Being an India coming from a busy metro city this kind of weather is a Dream come true, where there is ample of sunlight to recharge every cell of your body but at the same time you do not feel the heat exhaustion in spite of walking for a good one hour in the sun, now that's amazing from my prospective. Also along with the bright sun light you get this nice mild breeze of cold fresh air, such a rare combination. Of course this kind of weather is during the Alaska Season time only. But for me most of the time I visited and hiked this trail, I have been lucky to have this weather 9 out of 10 times. This trail is a must do for Couple / Family or Solo Traveler to help you either bond with your partner / have amazing time with family enjoying the glorious day / or to walk the earth alone and connect with the deepest part of yourself.

Fantastic trail also for the non walkers really as it's not that hard to do. I never made it to the top though as all the times I've tried it over the decades it was too snowy on the top to make it all the way. Fantastic views over the mountains!

We headed out to explore after our ship, Nieuw Amsterdam docked, 8 of us Canadian geocachers were out on the trails in the area, what a view. Lots of information and history about the area.

We walked from our cruise ship first thing in the morning to the tram with our family of 4. It was over $100 for our family to ride it up. We spent time on the shorter trails and in the nature center. The highlight for us was seeing Lady Baltimore. But seeing as we had limited time in the town, I would not spend that money to do this if we were to return. If you choose to go up make sure you get there before or after the ship tours come, the lines were 4 times as long when we came back down.

My wife, brother, and sister in law completed this hike in late July and although muddy enjoyed the hike. We actually took the tram from town up Mount Roberts and hiked the trail back down. You can do the opposite of this and will cost you less money as you only need to spend $10 vs $35 to catch a ride back down from the top. The trail is quite steep and is over 2miles long so plan accordingly if your doing it from the bottom. It can also be a bit slick in spots if its wet.

My 14 year old son and 10 year old daughter loved this experience. We all did. It was so beautiful. You don't need to read everyones advice about packing all of this silly hiking and rain gear. We could have done all of this in an old pair of tennis shoes and a jacket or cheap rain poncho. I read reviews and purchased all this outdoor gear for the trip. NOT needed! We wished we would have spent more time hiking. It was a highlight of the trip. We didn't really see a ton of people while we were up there. We were hiking all the way up to the snow caps. I decided that was far enough. The colors are so vivid. We even saw a beautiful cross up there.

The highlight for me was the gondola operator on the way up...who was a native american... he sang and played his hand drum....very entertaining...the view was spectacular ... visitor centre and gift shop was good....great value for money as your pass is good for all day....the gondola operator on the way down was full of information and was very interesting...

Take the tram for breathtaking views of Juneau and the surrounding area. This is a “must do” when in Juneau.

Bought the tickets before or would not have bothered with the long wait. The tram is crowded and it is really disappointing when you get up there, you then have a long queue to get down, save your money and spend more time at the glacier.

Challenging yet rewarding hike to some stunning views overlooking Juneau, the valley and surrounding mountain ranges that seem to go on forever.

We walked from our cruise ship to the trailhead. Once on the trail, all seemed fine until we must have taken a wrong turn. We saw a large fire pit, emergency supplies, and several trails leading from the camp site. At that point, we were unsure as to which trail to take. I thought we might have to backtrack, but then we heard some other hikers and were and able to get back on the correct trail. It's a gorgeous hike! It took a couple of hours to reach the top where the tram is. If we had more time, I would have liked to hike further. If you hike to the tram, you can spend $10 per person and ride the tram back for no additional fee. Stop by the bar for some Alaska wine, browse the large gift store and stop by the small theater for some local entertainment. And then you can ride the tram back!

You access this trail head by hiking up through the town bearing right. It climbs a switch back trail with lots of roots, steps and rocks to the gondola, then you can continue up to the cross on the top of the mountain. About 2 1/2 miles total distance but for average hikers about 2 hours time. Hiking boots definitely recommended. For $10.00 per person or $10.00 worth of receipts per person from the gift shop or restaurant at the gondola you can ride down.

We enjoy cruising but not the ship's excursions. They are usually crowded and cut short. Taking the tram to the top of Mt. Roberts was a very enjoyable $33 6 minute tram right to the top with hiking trails up the mountain to a cross and further up closer to snow patches melting and trickling down the mountain. Wild flowers abound and you can see distant snowcapped mountains up the waterway that you don't see from below.
Don't miss the live performance in the theater of the Alaska String Band, a family group who are quite good.

We did this walk on a glorious sunny day. Rather than catch the cable car up we thought we would walk up, have lunch in the restaurant and then we could show our receipt (over $10 each) an get a free ride down. All worked well but with all the cruise boat visitors I rather wish we had walked back down the glorious trail with all the local dog walkers.
Beautiful trail, highly recommend.

Included with the purchase of the Mount Roberts Tram are some hiking trails up and along the mountain. There aren't many guardrails and there are some steep and uneven spots along the trail. It can be challenging at times, with the amount of other people or the rocky terrain, but the views can't be beat and it's worth the climb. Have water handy, wear a hat and sunscreen and watch where you walk and enjoy the amazing views. There's a gift shop, theater, cafe and restrooms.

We walked to the tramway from our cruise ship and enjoyed the spectacular views from the top. Great movie on history of Tlinqit locals. They also have a bald eagle that was rescued and on display. Go early before cruise excursions hit the tramway and lines get longer around noon.

Had a lovely couple hour hike here. If your lucky you might even see a bear. Watch out for poison oak..

We had time to kill before joining our Un-Cruise ship, so we decided to go up the cable car to Mount Roberts, and would really recommend it. At the summit you can pick what you want to do from a short stroll to a decent hike, with great views over the inlet and out to sea.
There's also a restaurant, Bald Eagle display, a shop and a short, informative film about the local Tlingit tribe.
Look out for the local eagles who live on the cliff, they're called Elvis and Priscilla!
All in all, Mount Roberts is well worth visiting while in Juneau, and certainly better than the (often ship owned) trail of gift shops along the main street.

Start trail on opposite side of nature center, more gradual, less stair steps. A little steep to the cross, but worth the extra effort. Take your time and enjoy the veiws.

We took the tram up to the top and hiked just a little way up to a large cross on the mountain. On a clear day the scenery is glorious! You can see all of Juneau and Gastineau Channel. There are hikes of all kinds that you can take for every skill level and lots to see and do at the top of the tram. It's a fun excursion, but I'd only go on a clear day. Talk to the tram drivers on your way up. They are very knowledgeable and interesting.

Good access from the pier. Regular trips up and down. Hiking trails require reasonable fitness level and offer some good views, however the view from the platform is a bit restricted due to the trees and foliage. It would be great if the obstructing branches were pruned, then the view would be spectacular!

Do not do it. The line going down is 90 minutes. They should have told people before they came up. What a waste of time and money. Saw a show where the guy was begging for tips. Do not do this.

Fun trail at the top of the tramway in Juneau. Trail is easily marked and an easy walk. Views are incredible.

Unlike the many who take the tram up and hike down, we opted for the opposite; hiking to the top, stopping for lunch and getting the tram down.
It's solid uphill to get from the cruise port to the start of the trail, so the blood is pumping before you've even begun. The hike up is definitely not for the faint-hearted, however the views are truly breathtaking. Sticks are a must, particularly those with any knee complaints. There are roots and various breaks in the path to manouevre throughout.
Disappointed not to see any bears, although that being said, it was probably for the best given how secluded you feel on the way up.
All in all, we took around 3 hours to reach the top, and 30 seconds in the tram down, but well worth the hike.

Nice tour of town, tram ride had nice views and timberline trek was a bit too risky for this mature lady with bad back. Matthew was a great and knowledgeable guide but could kept his political views in check.

We thought it was an easy hike up as the beginning was pretty flat and easy. The more you hike up(at about 1.5 to2 mile point from the cable car station), it gets really steep althought the view is beautiful. If you don't have enough time or not enough energy to hike all the way to the Mt. Roberts' peak, do go to the Cross point. It is a beautiful hike.

We took the Mount Roberts Tram to the trail on top. It is such a wonderful trip and the views from way above the city are amazing. We took my mother who is 88 and she enjoyed it, said it was not at all scary although it goes straight up the mountain. So much to see and it is as if you are raising above the trees all of the way up and down. So amazing, safe and beautiful view. The gift shop at the top was nice also.

The ride to the station at Mt. Roberts is well worth the sometimes long line to either get up or down. The hiking trails are not too difficult and the views afforded are great. Leave extra time as the lines to board can be long.

Took the tram to the top then hiked a couple miles. We came in on a cruise. Lots of wild life. Saw a black bear and some Sitka deer. Cost of tram was $34 for adults. Bring good shoes and binoculars.

We were lucky to have a relatively clear day, so the views of Juneau were spectacular. Once at the top of the tram you can visit a bald eagle that they rescued and hike the area. My sons and I hiked up to the cross for even better views. It's fascinating to hike up beyond the tree line and see the waterfalls on the neighboring mountains and the gorgeous wildflowers. Stood next to some locals who enjoy going up regularly, so it felt like we weren't just doing the typical tourist-trap attraction.

While the view is great even when overcast, and trails add to the value, most reviewers overlook the excellent visitor center film on the First Nations Tlingit People who preceded EuroSettlers, and continue to own this space.Take 20 minutes to see the film, look into the eyes of the People in lobby photos, and appreciate the craft work in the ubiquitous gift shop.
Take note of the Spanish Moss-like lichen on the trees; this is a rainforest, after all.
The bald eagle, captive in a small enclosure, deserves much better quarters.

We took the tram up to the top ($34 per adult - can be ridden multiple times on the same day). The view from the tram was great but gets even better once you get on the trail. We did the simple 15-20 minute trail loop but added on the spur that takes you up to father Brown's cross. We started from the nature center. That way, you can get to the two viewing platforms fairly easily. The loop is marked with the names of the plants. You can go further but will need a few hours (and likely be prepared with water and snacks). Depending on the weather, the trail can be a bit slick, so good shoes are a must.

Enjoy the tram ride up & or down & just gentle hike or walk around the top through this rain forest. Also a lovely restaurant at the top. On a clear day you will love the views & on a foggy day - you will love the views!! Attitude is everything when traveling.

Mt. Roberts Tram
Upon advice from the lovely Meredith, who works at The Hanger, we chose to walk 'up' the mountain to the restaurant at the top, planning to take the tram down. She was very correct! To try to walk down the mountain, over the wooded path, would have been much more difficult as the angle was quite steep. Not recommended for bad knees for sure. Up was definitely the way to do it.
The walk was filled with lots of green, fresh air and great views within the forest. The climb is steep and even steeper in places, over tree roots and some rocks. Taking our time, we climbed to the top, approx. 1800ft. in under 2 hours. The vista views that you could see through the trees down to the town below were amazing. Eagles were in the tree tops overhead. Some 'locals' literally ran up the slopes past us, using short cuts that they said they would 'not recommended' if weren't from around there.
The reward of a wonderful lunch at the restaurant atop Mt Roberts was very welcome. Service again, was very pleasant. Shop and explore the summit before taking the free tram ride down the mountain.
Thanks again Meredith, for the best advice.

Lots of trails up top of the tramway...pick the length but a walk to the top provides great views...just make sure you dont bump into a bear.

A few of the reviews posted are confusing the walk around trail at the top of the Tram. The Mount Robert’s Trail is not for the casual walk. It’s a serious trek almost entirely uphill for over 2 miles gaining approx. 1700 feet. Lots of switchbacks. The Trail entry at the top of Sixth Street was no longer open. The other usable entry around the hill can be blocked by parked cars. It’s just after the bridge. Hiked with trekking poles as did others seen on the Trail. GLAD I did. Made the climb easier to do. Saw two other hikers slip either in the mud or on slick tree roots. Recommend good hiking boots or hiking shoes. Lots of mud along the way and snow near the top.
A great beautiful hike to the top. The Tram ride costs $20 just to go down starting 2024. Great views and foliage.
Round trip Tram now costs $55 per adult. If you’re a hiker, do it!

We took the tramway up to the top of Mount Roberts and walked the trails. The scenery is spectacular and the wildlife and wildflowers amazing. The views are incredible - you can see for miles...

You can make this a short trip or a longer hike. Super easy access from cruise ships. There is a restaurant and other things to do on top of the tram.

First off, from the Tram basin, we had to walk through town, gradually uphill and around to a gravel road that took us to the back side of Mount Roberts. After somewhere between 3/4 mile and a mile, we started the 2.5 mile trek upwards. It is not for the faint of heart. It takes someone that is in shape or that can take the trail over a long period of time to get to the top. Our family of four is in great shape, so it wasn't overwhelming, and one of us may have pushed us all up rather quickly. We did get quite a workout. But that said, the day before we were there a person did collapse and did not make it. So I caution people to be cognizant of their capabilities before walking 1800 feet UP.

The tram ride is gorgeous. The views are amazing. The walks are doable. The staff were fab and you can go up and down all day...fantastic value.

I loved all the excursions you can do in Juneau, but this hike will give you a great feeling of accomplishment and adventure. It's a steep walk out of the downtown area to get to the trailhead. As soon as you start, you are deep into tall trees and ferns. I hiked up to the tram station. The trail is step and well marked.

Hiked here on a beautiful warm sunny day. Rewarded with great views. Fairly easy trail after you take the cable car up.

Relive the gold rush and the hardship these people went through to make their dreams reality. The locals are well-informed and provide lots of information and stories.

There are a few nature trails (ranging from .5 miles to several miles) with gorgeous views in every direction!

Very beautiful landscape!
Great experience and nice walk in the mountain. Green and very beautiful view!
Amazing!

We took the tram to the visitors center (kinda leaked out). But incredible center with lots of cultural information on the Tlingit tribe. Definately stop and view the free movie. Good gift shop here with locally made products. Loved the hike, made it to Golds ridge. Lot's of berries including thimble berry, salmon berries, you name. So that means there were bear around. I didn't see any but others did. One hellva hike. IMost of the crusiers just do the 1/3 mile hike than your on your own. Popular with locals

You can take the tram up to the top and hike a couple of different trails. One trail will take you down the mountain. Another trail is a loop trail and provides various vistas of the docks and the city.

Decided to climb the mountain first and take the tram down. Although it was a little challenging walking up, it was well worth it. The tram down costs $10 but you can also eat or buy $10 worth of merchandise on top of the mountain which works as your ticket back down on the tram. I went up the tram in Girdwood, AK a few days earlier but the Mount Roberts had more things to do even though it's much smaller.

I have done these hikes several times and still enjoy them. You won't run across many animals or people if hike higher up. The view of Juneau is fantastic. Don't take the short trails if you go- taking the extra time to climb high up is very much worth it. Take the tram up but hike all of the way down at the end for some beautiful scenery.

I would encourage people to walk the trail the views are gorgeous and we were able to get some great pictures. The visitor center is nice, but you just can't get the true feel of the area without venturing out.

The walk take about half an hour and is worth every minute. The view is beautiful with all the trees and brush lush green like a tropical forest. Not a great trail for the handicap but something no one person should miss on a trip to Juneau.

Didn't make any plans in Juneau, so we decided to walk around the town and ride the tram to the Mount Roberts Trail. Absolutely incredible view with the clouds waifing by. Great gift shop and Eagle conservatory.

This is a lovely trail to follow plenty of wild life birds etc . You can follow the trail easy however have sturdy shoes as it can be uneven but worth it for the veiws you need a good couple of hours .

FREE, gorgeous but intense hiking trail. You do need to be athletic to climb up the trail because there are slippery mud in parts. That being said, I was crazy impressed by this woman who was carrying a 3month old baby and hand-holding her 6yo daughter who hiked up this 3mile-1800 feet elevation trail.
Gorgeous scenery and very "rooty" steep steps.
No, you don't have to pay $33 to get here as another reviewer wrote. You do have to walk about 1.5 to 2 miles past downtown Juneau to the start of the Mt. Roberts Trailhead.
There were some people who paid $35 to take the Mt. Roberts Tram up and then hiked down.
We decided to hike up (and work off our Cruise Buffet Calories) and then took the Mt. Roberts Tram down. Apparently, if you spend $15 per person in the gift shop, you can get a free Tram Ride down, which is what we did. Please ask the Gift Shop at the top of Mt. Roberts to confirm if this deal is still ongoing at the time of your visit.

awesome views, great shopping at the top. All day pass reasonably priced. a must for first time visit. esp. toward the end of their season.

Mount Roberts Tram is an amazing experience.
You will get the chance to see The beautiful Alaskan Juneau from top.

We were able to see the entire city of Juneau from the Tramway. This was a great view and the weather was very nice just needed light jacket.

After hiking at the Mendenhall Glacier, our shuttle dropped us off at the tram and we took it to the top and walked the loop trail. The trail was more difficult than I expected, but it was hot for Alaska (around 80) and I was already tired. But, the views were incredible. I got a great photo of our ship in port.

I went on the Mt Roberts tramway after completing the hike to Mendenhall Glacier with Adventure flow tours. What a fun time on the mountain. Snow. Lots of slipping and sliding, fun photos and the most amazing views. It was a completely fun day. Just allow time to get back down the mountain. Took about 45 minutes.

Took the tram up not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised by the spectacular views. Hiked the trail with husband and 11 month old baby and it was the highlight of our stay at Juneau

If you only go up for the view, it's totally worth it. If you are into trekking this is a short trip but has a lot of kodak moments. It does have a few steps here and there. You will also get to see the bald eagle that is in rehab. Beautiful bird.

We were on a cruise & decided to go up the mountain. There was a bit of a wait as there are only 2 carriages-one goes up whilst the other balances the weight as it comes down. They are quite large & carry a lot of people. There is a discount for Service Veterans but only those from the USA-NOT Australia!! We enjoyed the views from the tramway and at the top at the Nature Centre got a map of the trails. Decided to head up this dirt track but saw no bears or wildlife-a few too many tourists. Plenty of wildflowers. We climbed quite high past the cross & the view kept getting better on this clear blue sky day. A reasonably strenuous activity for a 70 yr old if there for a few hours. Plenty of tourist shops to take your money.

We took the tram up the mountain and then did a walk around the mountain. The guide as excellent and explained a lot about the trees, the plants and history of the area.

Easy to reach the base station from the cruise harbor and take the tram up the mountain to enjoy an excellent view of the town and harbor. You can see your cruise ship in the harbor and if you are early enough, there are short trails you can walk around the visitor center.
The price of the tram is expensive for $35 for a short trip up the hill but unless you want to try the vertical climb, there are no other choices.

Good views, folks very friendly and helpful. The views were stunning, trails marked well. Would recommend to all.

Nice short local route with some great scenery and views. The trail tread (walking surface) has some drainage problems...in places eroded badly, or puddled and muddy. Other places a nice wide firm trail. A steep trail.

It is a great activity if day is sunny. There are many trails one can choose from when leaving the tram station up in the mountain. We took the one that leads to the cross, and the views to both downtown Juneau and mountains around is definitely worth.

I took this tour recently and I agree with another reviewer that one of the highlights was our Native Alaskan staff member Daniel, who interacted with the passengers and played his drum while we were ascending the mountain. Having said that, the highlight was the view itself from Mt Roberts. I was fortunate that the weather had cleared from the day before and it was possible to see along the Gastineau Channel to the mountain range in the distance and the many cruise boats which looked like miniature toys below. I would not recommend taking this trip if the visibility is poor as it is quite expensive.(over $30 pp)
There was an interesting free movie in the building above and an organisation that rescues bald eagles had an eagle called Baltimore in an enclosure. Baltimore was injured and unable to be released into the wild and one could hear a talk about eagles. There was a large restaurant and the inevitable shops, but the main attraction was Juneau itself stretched below.

Take the tram up to the trails. Tram tickets are good all day. Trails paved and and lots of foliage and vegetation. Awesome view of Juneua at th top of the trail.

We were visiting on a cruise ship and wanted to do something different in Juneau this visit and since we are both in pretty good health, and walk a lot, felt we would try the Mt. Robert's Trail from town and then take the tram back down.
My husband did great on the trail and I was struggling quite a bit. It was cold, drizzly and muddy but very scenic and challenging. AFTER I got done with the hike (took us two hours because we stopped a lot :-) I felt pleased with myself for completing the challenge.
We spent $10 EACH in the gift shop and/or restaurant and was able to ride back down "free". There is always something you can find to buy...so it's a win win for all. It is a $34 round trip ticket OR $10 down.

Climbed the mountain with friends. Was a fairly difficult route in places. Need to be careful of uneven paths. All up hill climbing. Need good sturdy boots or shoes. Take water and snack. Will burn up plenty of calories. Didn't get right to the top about3/4 of way. Stopped at the tram and had a snack and took the tram back to the harbour. Great day out and got some amazing pictures from the top of the mountain.

This was a beautiful, but slightly rigorous hike that was accessible from the cruise ship terminal. Go to the Visitors Center right off the cruise port and ask for a map. They will direct you through town to the trail entrance—which is a nice little walk. Bring water and BUG SPRAY! I have never felt so many BITING flies in my LIFE! I burned twice the calories swinging my arms around like a maniac swatting flies. Also consider bringing money for the tram or gift shop. If you buy $10 at the gift shop, you can ride the tram back down for free. I would have hiked back down...but the FLIES! If you exercise regularly, you can manage this hike and enjoy the scenery!

We frequently do this hike as it takes us about 1 hour to get to the lodge. We hike frequently but we are talking and viewing along the way. Young people can do this in less than a hour. Lots of switchbacks so not extreme but challenging.
Lodge is the best for viewing the gastineau channel, mountains and downtown Juneau. Restaurant has gotten better but sometimes service is slow. Crab nachos are very good and the cold Alaska beer is excellent after the hike.

Worth a visit, especially if the weather is nice. Enjoyed the hike. If you have binoculars, look for sheep!

You can ride a tram up to the trail head or you can start the hike from the town of Juneau and do about 3 miles before you get to where the tram takes you. The tram ticket is a bit pricey but it is good for all day as many time you want to ride the tram up and down. The Robert Mountain trail from the tramway onward is not too steep and offers breathtaking vistas and overlooks with in 1/2 mile to 3/4 mile of hiking. The trail is well marked. One can do a loop of about a mile to mile and a half and enjoy the amazing views.

We took the tram up the mountain to the museum and watched the video provided. It was very interesting and informative. Beutiful view of the town below. And nice gift shop.

We took the tram up and down the mountain & the view was beautiful. The nature center was closed when we got there & the line to return down the mountain was very long & there was much complaining by people as we all had to be back to cruise ships by a certain time. I think there could have been better communication when the nature center closes and to allow extra time for return trip. We enjoyed it and learned about more about the area and Tlingit.

Lots of hiking options here. You can ride up on the Tramway and hike down or vice versa. The views are spectacular. We saw some bald eagles as well. Not counting the one they have in captivity at the top of the mountain.

1st off you can walk the trail to the top if you are in good shape or take the cable tram up the side of the mountain. This view is ear popping and enjoyable. Once up top check out the ships below, but awaits you are the trails, mountainsides, Balled Eagle and the big Cross to pray under that you made it. 😁😁😁 Now there's a restaurant, stores and Rest Rooms. So enjoy your day,no heels or wedges ladies. PEEEAAACCCEEE!!!!!!

We took the tram up and then did some hiking from there. We were there on a rainy day and a hike up wasn't feasible. On top we visited the raptor center, which is really just one eagle, Lady Baltimore, and her handler. Lady Baltimore’s rescue story is sad but uplifting, and her knowledgeable handler is more than happy to talk about anything you could want to talk about when it comes to eagles.
There is a small gift shop at the trail head where you can buy a map for $1. We probably didn’t need one, but useful just in case. We walked up to the cross on the hill and then finished the loop back to the tram. The whole thing took under an hour (with a child), and that included stops for pictures. As we started the trail to the cross, we encountered some bear scat (at least a day old), so be aware that even though these paths are well traveled by people, the bears aren’t too far away. The views on the trail were beautiful.
Inside the tram building you’ll find a restaurant, another large gift shop, and a short movie. It wasn’t busy at the top since we went late in the day and we were done with everything in about 90 minutes. It’s worth waiting to go later if that’s an option for you. The trails weren't busy and there weren't any lines for the tram.

Loved these views and the gold mining area. It was a hot day the day we were there so the gold mine entrance was very refreshing. We stood there a while. Really nice.

We arrived early in the shoulder season in May but the trails are very walked down. Good easy steps for people who need help. Other trails for those wanting more. Bear was around so we didnt go far. Got pics of blue grouse and ptarmigan. Sounds of water, eagles and calling grouse. Pretty views.

We enjoyed our hike up Mt. Roberts. I was six months pregnant and my 60-year-old parents were with us, and we all managed the trail without any major trouble. It got a bit strenuous toward the top, but we revived over a nice lunch at the expensive, but tasty, restaurant at the top.
The hike took us all morning (~3 hours?) at a fairly casual pace. I highly recommend walking up, enjoying the sights, and then taking the tram down in just a few minutes.

My wife & I went on the "Town tour, Tram & Timberline Trek" excursion and had a great time. The tram ride was great as were the sights seen while going up the tram. The Timberline trek was beautiful what with walking through the forest and seeing the spectacular scenery. Well worth a visit.

this train ride was worth every penny spent, we enjoy it so very much Trevor was a wonderful bus driver and very knowledgeable about the area we would recommend this to anyone going to Alaska

Make sure to bring good shoes and plenty of water. Not recommended for casual hikers as there are lots of switchbacks and steep inclines, but I felt like a superhero for accomplishing it.

We arrived in Juneau for the day on our cruise. We were pleased that there wasn't too much of a queue for the tram. The walks around the top are lovely, with fantastic views. We caught the tram both up and down. The bald headed eagles could be seen in the trees as we came down. A trip worth doing.

It took us 2 hours to make the climb but ir was good exercise after sitting on a ferry for 9 hours the day before. It isn't that steep as there are many switchbacks but the going is slow because of all the exposed tree roots that you have to maneuver over as you walk up the trail. We ate at the top and if you spend $20 ($10 apiece for the two of us), you can ride the tram down for free. You just get in line and show your receipt as you board the tram. The food was pretty good at a price consistent with other places in Juneau. I would recommend at least 3 hours, 2 hours of the climb and an hour for either the gift shop or the restaurant. A little longer if you want to also watch the movie.

After riding the tram to the top, you can look around at some exhibits and displays. An injured eagle is caged there. There is a restaurant with beautiful views and expensive food. If you want to minimize walking but still see a few things, this is a good place to visit. There is a free movie available, but not much else.

We enjoyed a lovely walk along this trail .. Saw new spring growth and several birds in trees . Would not be every ones interest but we enjoyed the walk in the sunny warm day

A fun ride to the top of Mt Roberts - easily accessible downtown Juneau. The top gives a beautiful view over the Juneau area as well as south and north. There's a nice gift shop at the top too.
Especially enjoyable is the outdoor hike out through the area. Some thrilling overlooks.

rustic almost and the views of the surrounding area were amazing.. we had an exceptionally warm day here.

We had time to kill before our Un-Cruise left and went on the cable car and had coffee at the top. Staff were very helpful.

Amazing views from the top and even better if you spend time hiking the trails ones you ride the tram.

If you're planning on getting to Mount Robert, the tramway isn't the most economical. We had the Juneau tour saver app which will give you 1 pass FREE on purchase of a full priced ticket. The pass offers the same discounts for other activities as well. The views and the trail are great. You can definitely spend half a day here just enjoying the views.

I undertook this trail during a visit to Juneau as part of our cruise ship itinerary.
Having ridden up in the tramway I initially only intended to walk the Alpine Loop trail and path to Father Brown’s Cross. However the path beyond that proved too enticing to resist so I continued on.
The inclement weather (persistent drizzle and low cloud) didn’t detract too much from the pleasure of walking this clearly defined and scenic trail. I am used to hill walking on our native Island so was fine with the fairly steep ascent. However, some may find it quite a strenuous climb if not used to such walks.
Snow was still lying in pockets as altitude increased, although the path itself was clear and well-maintained. I was very taken with the colourful range of alpine flowers as I ascended.
I stopped short of the peak to begin my return as the cloud had thickened, making visibility very limited and with little to therefore be gained from reaching the peak at Gastineau.
On my way down I was rewarded with the sight of a bold little ptarmigan scurrying around on the snow in front of me, seemingly unperturbed by my presence.
An enjoyable trek, which on a clear day must offer even more spectacular views.

You'd better be in good shape, have water, hiking boots, preferably along with a partner. I am out of shape, and shoudn't have taken this hike. I was able to complete the hike in three and a half hours, taking frequent breaks and taking smaller steps rather than steeper steps. It's a challenging trail, not for the faint of heart. I took my time, being out of shape, it is quite steep, challenging. It can be done in an hour and a half or even less, depending on how fit you are. Once you reach the top, there are still more trails to explore if you're game. Then, spend ten dollars per person in drink, food, merchandise, save the receipt for your ride down the tram, else you hike back down. Not recommended dining at the Timberline Bar & Grill, terrible service, poor food quality, getting a drink is alright.

Wonderful view of the city and port of Juneau. Be sure to ask how long the wait is to return on the tram. At peak hours you might wait a long time to get back down!!!!

We took the tram up to start at 1800' although I read you can start from the city earlier to avoid the fare or if you're a purist. The trail and views are outstanding. We hiked up to Mt Gastineau peak about 3400' I was told. It took about 4 hrs RT from the tram. This was our favorite activity in Juneau when we went in Aug 2016. Luckily we had a superb weather day. Highly recommend unless you don't like heights.

I read reviews about this trail and researched about the trail online. It said ‘easy’ trail. I have to disagree with this. I’m 36yrs and in good shape. I don’t hike regularly but I walk my dog daily. So I thought this trail will not be difficult for me. Apparently it’s not easy as I thought. I came to Juneau on the second week of May. On the top of the mountain is still covered with snow! I had a walking sneakers on and struggled with the snow a bit (see pictures I posted). I didn’t expect the trial will be all snow! Other than that, the trail is beautiful. We saw some bold eagles flying on the top of the mountain. It took us about 2 hrs to hike from the trailhead to the tram. We rode the tram down. It’s going to be a good memory when I get old that I’ve done this hike!

This two mile hike, switchback after switchback, is doable for anyone "half-way" fit - - this 70 yr old did it in two hours with a good number of short rests - - always at prime locations admiring the lush rainforest and vistas. Waterproof/resistant hiking shoes/boots a necessity.

This is worth the trip. The cable car leaves from outside the cruise dock and you take it multiple times during the day of your visit. There is a nature trail, eagles nest and a theatre showing videos about the Tlingit culture.

So amazing to see these beautiful views from up so high.
We will ise it again when we go back and would recommend it to anyone

Fantastic guide and a brisk walk up and down the mountain, with breathtaking views around every curve! Highlight is the Mendenhall Glacier. Can't be missed! Put those hiking boots on and go for it!

This tram ride took you to the top of an amazing mountain that shows several gorgeous views of Juneau. Meeting the Bald Eagle was wonderful and learning about various animals was too.

We hiked up the Mount Roberts Trail - my 54 yr. old husband with a bad foot and myself (the same age) with a bad knee and our 3 20-something year old kids. They had no problems with the trail...my husband didn't either or at least he didn't act like he did. I huffed and puffed but finally made it up the thing and proudly got my "I hiked Mount Roberts Trail" t-shirt in the gift shop where the tram comes in along with a well deserved beer! It was the end of the season so I got the very last cool shirt - the other ones you could hardly read...guess why they're still on the rack! I'm no athlete, but enjoyed my hike. Be sure to bring water and maybe a snack... a walking stick would also be handy. It took us awhile to find the entrance to the trail which you have to climb up hill in town just to get to...I was tired before we even started! If I can do it most anyone can!!

Hike up the back of Mount Roberts and you are sure to find plenty to interest anyone who finds nature compelling. It's just gorgeous. The last time I walked the trail I met a venerable porcupine! Ferns are lovely here. Bring a good supply of water and wear sturdy shoes, this is not a place for someone in sandals. I like to hike up, buy something to drink and a postcard or two in the gift shop at the top, and take the tram down.

We look forward to this each time we’re on a cruise that stops in Juneau. We prebook our tickets and walk right on the cable car. Its a great photo op on the ride to the top. There’s a lovely cafe and alpine hiking trails

They are very efficient in taking you up the mountain to see the view from all over - it is amazing. We had a great time walking around and visiting the sights. Great gift shop for special souvenirs. Can take a hike too but wear comfortable shoes.

Took the cable car up from the base where our cruise ship shuttle gripped us off. The service and time to get to the top was great but this was the beginning of the season so I can't speak for peak periods.
Up the top, the was plenty of information boards to guide you through which trail would suit best with accurate times and distances. There were trails to suit all. Even though there was still a lot of snow and slush on the ground, the trails are pretty well maintained and relatively OK to transverse.
The area also had a kiosk, bald eagle and museum to look through.
Good value.

Myself and a friend hiked up the mountain (sea level to 1,800 feet) in July.
We started at sea level at a Tourist Information Center by the Cruise Ship Terminal, then followed Franklin Street uphill to Gold Street, then Basin Road to the Mount Roberts Trailhead (50 minutes). We then followed the path uphill amongst the forest from the trailhead to the top of Mount Roberts Tramway (2 hours). Occasional views through the trees. Numerous benches for a rest. Wear stout footwear and take plenty of water.
The Mount Roberts Tramway station at the top contains a small cafe, a gift shop, Theater (free 20 minute ‘Seeing Daylight’ film on the history and culture of the Tlingit Alaskan native people), restaurant, restrooms, water fountain and a Nature Center. Great views of Douglas Island mountains opposite, and Juneau city & Gastineau Channel below.
Please note: I walked up Mount Roberts following the trail, then spent US$10 in the restaurant to get a free trip down.

After our other excursion and lunch we had plenty of time to ride up the tram to see the beautiful views of Juneau and the water far below. There was a really long line to get back down by the late afternoon (about 1 1/2 hours to the tram itself) so we decided to hike up to the cross and see that cool view. Our tennis shoes or light hiking boots were good for the well-groomed hiking trails. There were quite a few mosquitos on the back trails in the early evening so wish I'd brought mosquito wipes I had back on the ship. They showed a really good 45 minute film about Alaskan wilderness at the trailhead but we didn't have time for the whole thing. Dress in layers as always in Alaska. By the time we got back to the tram at 8:30 the line was less than 15 minutes.

Nice way to spend the morning, even in a light rain. Enjoyed the views from the tram, took the nature walk and liked the exhibits. Woke up the eagle (Lady Baltimore) and browsed the gift shop.

Once at the top of Mt Roberts there is a really fun trail that goes around in the top of the mountain. It has some up and down along the trail but is easy to hike on and go at your own pace. There are stops along the way as well with information about a variety of things.
Felt great to stretch the legs and see great sights.

There are 3 small treks you can do once you get on top of the mount using the tramway. They offer excellent views! If you dont fancy doing the treks, perch yourself in the small cafe inside and enjoy the beautiful views from the cafe itself. They also a had rescued bald eagle at the top in a cage and she was magnificent! It offered a chance to see these beautiful birds from up close. There is a small gift shop and a small theater too. Depending on the time of the day, you may see one of the artists working on a totem pole or a mask.

great place to take kids, very safe and educational. Lots of hands on for information, live eagles and great trails

This trail starts at the bottom of the mountain. I read the first part going up to the tram station is very steep. As we were limited on time (ship leaving port) we took the tram up the mountain. Due to the time constraints I was only able to hike the loop trail and a spoke off the loop. For those who have time, this would be a great half day or longer hike to the peak of Mt. Roberts.

Took the trail up to the tram building. Hike is about 2 miles (one way to the top) and was challenging due to the snow on the trail.
There are several areas that are a little rough, and drifting made areas of the trail very interesting.
Probably a trail for older kids and adults. Younger kids might complain.
At the top, the tram building was closed, but we had brought a sandwich and hung out for a little bit.
Great hike as long as you have some really good shoes.

We walked the trail instead of getting on the tram to see the view from above.
It took us about 1 hour and 20 minutes from the start of the trail.
A gentle climb up to the mountain and what a view from the above. We also enjoyed Lady Baltimore the resident eagle in mount Roberts.

We hiked to the top of the trail to the Tram station, it was a long and slow hike but very nice with great views out over the valley. The hike through town to the start of the trail from the cruise port is up hill all the way but worth the trip. Once we were at the top we enjoyed lunch at the restaurant and took the tram down for free. gear half day adventure.

Went up the tramway on my cruise to Alaska this past summer. Spectacular view of Juneau Harbor and the area. Take a hike up the trail once you get up top for more great views. Don't miss the museum and film for some history if the people.

Pictures, pictures, pictures! View is amazing, especially if you are looking for your ship down... The ride was good cause of Daniels interactions and his colleagues also. Restaurant is always busy and for it you need to wait and wait, just to come inside and find a place. I was waiting 45 min. They are also slow with service. Small shop on the level up offering good present and souvenirs. Comming again for sure, to explore more and walk around!

It was tough 22 years ago. We almost didn't make it this time. Beautiful trail but way further and steeper than it looks. Beer and burgers at the top.

We felt it was well worth our time to experience Juneau with our feet. We hiked from our cruise ship to the Gold Creek area up to Ebner falls. Then we went back to the Mt. Roberts' trailhead. We loved the beauty of this trail, the stair-stepping along tree roots and the dense oxygenation you experience in a rich temperate rainforest. It was about 2.5 miles to the tram at the top, where we enjoyed our gourmet lunch in the restaurant and then took the tram down. My recommendation for those who want to stretch their legs a bit off a ship (we totaled 12 miles that day) and experience Mt. Roberts more intimately and a break from tourists. Even though it rained, it was a great experience!

The Mt Roberts tram car was purchased aboard our ship prior to arrival, we joined the queue to go up about 10 min wait enjoyed the scenery on way up had a good look around for couple hrs then queued for about 15 mins to come down well worth the experience and excellent views at the top and coming down , even though there was 4 ships in port that day it wasn’t really bad ,if you are there then you have to do this

Mount Roberts trail is about a 2.5 mile hike to the top that offers phenomenal views of Lake Winnipesaukee at a number of viewpoints on the way up, as well as a more limited view at the top. It is located within the Castle in the Clouds property and is maintained by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust (LRCT), but is open for free to the public. While at the top, I continued my hike on the High Ridge Trail, among other trails maintained by (LRCT), and completed an 8.8 mile loop using a number of their trails. I managed to pick up a few ticks; I suspect I got them on the High Ridge Trail, which was marshy and had a lot of tall grass to walk through.

Did not do this first time came to AK b/c of lines. After reading reviews on TA, decided to fit it in after morning excursion and lunch since not leaving until 10 PM. Short wait, tram holds a lot. Can ride all day with stamp. Views spectacular from tram, show was good at center. Gift shop informative, get map. Bring water for hiking- want to try all hikes- views amazing from so high up! Cool forest and tree roots-crazy. I used hiking stick for knee and hip, but take it slow and its manageable.

Went up on a rainy day. Beautiful forested area. Make sure to do the Alpine Loop Trail near the tram terminus. A whole different thing, meadows and flowers.

Hike up to the Father Brown Cross where you will have fantastic 360 views but be aware it does get very windy up the top and the paths are well worn dirt.

I've heard the phrase "Gods country" many times, but if you climb to the top or almost to the top you will understand. The trails are moderate to intense, so prepare yourself. It will be worth it!

A peaceful trail through lush green woods with blooming wildflowers, an inspirational highlight of our trip to Alaska. We took the tram up the mountain and walked the trail that's about 1 mile. Mostly very easy but some brief steeper sections. We went first thing in the morning from our cruise ship (around 9am) and there were few people around. We even saw a black bear from a safe distance. We were up on the trail and the bear was down quite a ways in the valley. The air was clean, the views were beautiful. Best part of Juneau, for sure! Don't miss it! A local said there are more vigorous trails and from there you can spot a lot of bald eagles.

The trail itself is very well done - we felt secure even though it was raining, and there were lots of interpretive signs -- but we had to pay $33 to take the tram up there to get to it, and it was raining and foggy so we couldn't see much.

Right across from the cruise ship dock. Run by the Tlingit people. AAA discount on tickets. Items in the Gift Shop are fair priced. Watch the carving of a totem.

My partner and I went last September. It was an amazing hiking experience. Steep trail that was almost like an obstacle course and the views - once you could see through the dense forest - was amazing. Our total hike was 7 hours and we could not be happier with our experience. I totally recommend couples to try this.

We eagerly headed for the Mount Roberts Trail to experience the rainforest of Alaska. It was extraordinary with thrushes, stellar jays heralding our ascent to top for views across the bay. We ate a hardy lunch at the station and then headed down with our receipt for a free nine minute ride down to Juneau!

Take the Tram then walk the trails. See wild flowers, amazing tree formations, beautiful jade rock, and a panorama of vistas that begin to give you a taste of the grandeur and enormity of great state. Inclines are not too steep and it’s worth the hike. You can see the Juneau harbor, parts of the city from Mt Roberts, which stands roughly 3000 feet above water. There is a gift shop there, a live captive eagle, and you can watch an award winning film on the local natives that they made. Worth seeing!!! They even actively carve totem poles. Go!!!

If you divide the trail into two halves, the first half brings you to the top of Mount Roberts, and the second half leads around the top of Mount Roberts. I had walked all over Juneau, and I had no desire to do both. We rode the gondola up to the top and walked the top half. The views were magnificent. Keep your eyes open, there are some very nice carvings in the trees.

Some people take the tram to start their hike in the alpine on Mt. Roberts, but hiking up from Basin Rd through the forest is a great way to feel the transition in ecosystems through the elevation change. If you have the time, legs, and the lungs, it's a worthwhile venture--my preference is on non-rainy days.

I have visited alaska multiple times, so whale watching or glaciers is not of particular interest. Glad decided to take the tram up to the mountain. Though it is a bit rainy, we still enjoyed a short walk along one of the trails. I believe the view would be spectacular on sunny days, and definitely recommend anyone interested in hiking go for it.

Interesting trip, only problem we had was visibility due to the fog and rain. But we did still enjoy the ride up & down and getting to see Lady Baltimore. She is a Bald Eagle that they have rehabbed.

A short tram ride to get a just OK view. The hiking trail not particularly interesting and not marked with information.
Way too expensive for what it was

The trail head is a little less than a mile from the furthest cruise ship port. The hike up is about 2.5 miles & on a well marked trail. I have done this hike twice- the first time there was a little snow on the top (may), & the second time in August it rained on us most of the way up.
If it is a clear day the views are fantastic! The hike is up a mountain so be prepared! But it really wasn't that difficult.we had 3 kids with us ages 7-12 and they all made it.
At the top there is a restaurant & gift shop. They made money on us since we were soaked & bought dry shirts! But if you spend $10 at the top you can ride down the tram for free! A great deal!

Rode the gondola to the top of the mountain. Nice place to eat and great picture opportunities. Very nice gift shop.

We took the tramway up the mountain. Stunning views of Juneau and surrounding mountains. Once up the mountain, you can pick the length and difficulty of your hike. All are beautiful.

This was an amazing hike up to the tramway restaurant. It is a good hike which at times is a bit challenging for those pushing 60. It took 55 minutes and was worth every step. A few more direction signs would be a nice addition, however several regular hikers were able to provide info.
Once to the top grab a snack and beer at the restaurant. You deserve it. The team down was free with a 20 order and the ungo provided on the tide down was interesting.
This is a must in Juneau.

We hiked up the mountain until the Mount Roberts tramway. If you spend $10 at the top, the receipt gets you a ride down! The view from the top is fantastic. Would recommend.

My preference is to hike in the high alpine. That said, this trail offers the feel of what it's like to be in the coniferous rain forest, and provides a few worthy scenic viewpoints. The trail rises 1700+ feet to the top of the tram ride; a one-way ticket down can be purchased at the gift shop. If it's been raining, the trail can be muddy and slippery in spots.Wear appropriate footwear/good tread and layers if raining!

We had some spare time while in Juneau and we decided to go for a hike on Mount Roberts Trails. There are a few different route to choice from. It is also very steep but has a well maintained trail. There is also some stunning view points over looking Juneau. If you like being outdoors and hiking this is a great place to spend a few hours while in Juneau.

we planned to hike up and ride the tram down but the tram was closed for repairs so we hiked down. great views. lotsa dogs and human traffic when weather improved. moderate difficulty.

If you are looking for a nature trip, beautiful scenery, chilly atmosphere, this is the place! The breakfast at the top, The Gastineau Channel is so amazing. The hike was tiring all the way up, the slopes and terrain was so cool. And at the top you can play with the snow.. really amazing. In the downtown you can find the King Crab Leg, Red Dog Saloon..Go around May.. weather is so cool..

We had just gotten off The Safari Endeavor cruise ship and wanted to get a little exercise so my wife and I hiked up and back It was a strenuous but fairly smooth hike up to the top. We got great views of down town Juneau and the harbor.

Power walking up this trail affords wonderful views through a beautiful forrest with few people to spoil your walk. Lunch at the top with spectacular views and a free tram ride down if you spend more than $10pp is a great way to spend a morning in Juneau.

We walked up as far as the tramway station. It is an easy to find and follow trail, with many steps and tree roots. You need to be reasonably fit and agile. The views of Juneau from the top are well worth it and there is a very welcome bar!

We took the tram up on an amazingly warm, clear, sunshiny day in August. We had only a few hours in port, so we took the shorter trail to the cross, but then kept going a bit as the views just draw you up, up, up! You can really get a sense of the vastness of Southern Alaska when you are up top. It's a great escape from the crowds too. It's a moderate hike and the trail was well maintained. On the way back down we stumbled upon the totems near the tram building (magical!). I would love to have more time to explore these trails, especially on a clear day. Well worth your time to check this out, even if you have limited time in Juneau.

Beautiful! If you like hiking trails do not miss this!! There are several trails to choose from and the lengths and difficulty varies depending on your stamina. The views are amazing and the bald eagles fly freely. Next time i will plan on 2-3hrs here!

Hiked up the trial from what was a poorly marked starting area at the end of town. I guess the normal trailhead was closed, but the secondary one seemed a natural start anyway. Do wear good tread shoes for this almost all upward trail. I'm 60+ and had with me 3 of my 20+ plus kids. Had to wonder several times how much farther the end was while we hiked up in a drizzle making the trail very slippery in places. Very much worth the hike if you in good shape however. Also be sure to spend $10/head or $40 for some goods and you will not need to pay for the trip down. Just show them your receipts. Hopefully you will get a parting of the clouds for a nice view of the area. --- Also see National Forest shop and the hurt bald Eagle on top.

By all means take the tram up; then go for a nice walk on the Mount Roberts trail. The walk is relatively easy and only takes 30 minutes or so for the shorter loop. And the views are great. Be sure to stop and see the injured and rescued bald eagle.

Our cruise ship stopped in Juneau, so we decided to hike to the top of this mountain. It was longer than we thought, almost 2 hours from the cruise ship to the peak, and very tiring. The trail is well-worn, so it was easy to follow. Our reward at the top was purchasing "I climbed Mount Roberts" T-shirts and having an Alaskan beer. With the receipt from our purchases, we could ride the tram down for free, with a great view of the city and the harbor.

What a beautiful ride up the tram and a 2 mile hike to the top to Father Browns Cross for an amazing view on the City and Channel

If you have the time, this hike is very rewarding, it is over an hour of gradual climb (and can be muddy and slippery) but Alaska is about adventure! Save yourself the money and do the hike for the view!

My husband and I hiked up to the tramway; it took us a but over an hour at a pretty slowish pace for us. It was a good hike, and worth it to save the money. It you spend $10 up there you get a free ride down on the tram.
We also walked up to where the cross was, this was a tricky walk through soft, slippery snow, and only had a slightly better view than from the lower view point.
Pretty expensive if you're taking it up and down.

Even on an afternoon complete with drizzle Mount Roberts is spectacular. It was cold and misty and the hot chocolate after a walk was perfect. The gift shop is a delight, no cheap junk, but beautiful handcrafted art, clothing, well designed t-shirts, hats, etc.

Excellent opportunity to enjoy nature. Just 10 minutes from downtown on the tram will be able to enjoy trekking paths with amazing views.

We were hesitant to spend the money on what many described as a "touristy thing" but the views were amazing, hiking trails easy to navigate-well worth the money!

In my opinion people do not mention enough how breathtaking it can be to catch the tram and come up here for a jog when it is sunny.

We took the tram and then hiked up the mountain. Absolutely breathtaking views! Definitely worth it!

I drove out my campsite, Glacier Nalu around 6:30 am to find a drive thru coffee house.
Parked my rental in the free parking lot on the corner of 8 th street and Basin Road. Walked on Basin Rd to find Mt Robert’s Trailhead sign.
The morning was not sunny and inviting, It was foggy ... but it was not windy or raining.
The trail is well marked, comfortable and steep. If you are not comfortable with hills or walking upstairs, you will feel it.
Personally, I view walking uphill as an ideal workout.
The heart and lungs feel it, the leg and derrière muscles feel it.
Cardiovascular and strength training in one session.
Once, I reached the tram with snow on the ground, I turn back to head down the trail.
An elderly man was hiking up with ease and strength. I stopped to sincerely compliment him on his hiking abilities.. He rewarded me with a genuine soulful smile.

Hike up the trail for great views of Juneau, the channel and Douglas Island. The trail has add ons so that you can extend your hike or take the tram down for only $10.

The tram up with the view and the bald eagles saying hello on the trip up were highlights of our Alaskan trip. I’d highly recommend hiking up the trail from the tram and we saw great views and two black bears, safely from a distance. If you only have a short time in Juneau, take the tram and eat the crab legs at Tracy’s. A taxi to Take the short walk to the awesome Mendenhall Glacier was also a highlight.

If the weather is good, do this walk. The views are so pretty. We started the hike by going to the right at the trailhead. I felt the walk, keeping in my mind that I had proper footwear, was not that taxing. There were several people struggling in very inappropriate footwear. Once we arrived via tram at the top, we spent about an hour and a half walking around and then watched the interesting film at the visitor area, so in all we spent around two hours before descending into town. On a clear day, we would definitely recommend this trek.

This was one of our favourite things to do during our 2 week vacation. We took the tram to the top and spent a couple hours on the trails. So many wonderful sites. Hike more than just the loop...go past the cross.

A very well organized event, friendly staff, fast moving queues and stunning views with excellent hikes around the summit with vast views of country side and wildlife.

You can’t beat the view from Mt Roberts trail and mountain! You can take the mountain tram round trip, or you can hike one way and take the tram down the other. There is a restaurant, nature center, and gift shop at the top of the mountain.

Amazing views, beautiful hike, fun tram ride, educational, historical movie. Has a little bit of everything. Great activity for family of all ages.

It's up hill all the way by switchback trail once you get to the trailhead outside town. It was wet and muddy the morning we did it but the cool temperature was helpful. Cloud cover was low so only intermittent views of the mountains. We only went as far as the Tramway where we had excellent chowder soup at the Tramway Grill before taking the tramway down free (walking up and spending over $10 gets you this freebie). We saw a male deer on the loop walk in the meadow. First terrestrial wildlife we've seen here after 1 days stay. Excellent intro to Alaska.

We took the tram up to the top of the Mount Roberts and then, after touring the building there, seeing a film on North West Native American culture and seeing Lady Baltimore (the wounded Bald Eagle that resides there), we set out for a hike. It was pretty rugged with lots of climbing and descending and lots of tree roots across the paths, etc. but the view from that trail are truly spectacular. We returned to the tram and found the trail that led back down into town but after exploring it, we decided it was too steep a descent for the four of us and opted for the tram down. If we had unlimited time we might have attempted it.

We purchased the tram tickets on our ship for 34 dollars. The tram is wrote on the pier where the ship drops you so you don’t have to walk very far to get on. When I saw the tram and the cables it was suspended on I was a little scared to ride it. Surprisingly I didn’t feel nothing on the way up the mountain. It was 18,000 feet up. Once you get there, there is a shop and a restaurant. Very cute souvenirs. When you get out of the shop they have an eagle sanctuary. We was very cool to see an eagle so close. It had an area to hike up the mountain and another shop. We loved it, the views were amazing and the people were super nice and informative. Definitely a must do in Juneau!

Easy to find and I’d say moderate hike but I tried to blast through to the top with only a few stops for pictures.
You come up in the backside of the tram on your left.
Spend $20 in the gift shop and you’ve got a ride down. Or pay $20 for a ride down but seems better to get some hot sauce, Huckleberry toffee and some Rhubarb jam while your at it seeing as it’s gonna cost you $20 USD anyways.
Nice TRAM ride down and more hiking up top. If you are on a cruise and leave early you’ll have plenty of time to hike, come down and still make the Mendenhall Glacier Interpretive Center or if you gots lots of money get the helicopter ride and land on it.
I could not find many opportunities to get on the Glacier so I looked at it from Nugget Falls, also worth the hike to see the falls. You can get under it too if your wanna splash splash in some glacier run off.

We did this on our first afternoon in Juneau and what a lovely way to get our bearings on being in this beautiful town! We took the tram up, which was easy and there wasn't a long wait. We walked around some of the trails at the top a bit and then we meandered down the Mt. Roberts Trail.
The path, while well maintained, definitely has lots of roots and stairs. Folks with bad knees may prefer to take the tram both directions. That said, if you're relatively healthy, I'd encourage you to walk down. The trees were so beautiful in the afternoon light!

We hiked up to the cross. The hike was a good workout. The trail is wide in spots and also more narrow with some roots and rocks but well maintained. It is mildly strenuous but we made it considering two of us were not in great shape. Worth the hike, but if you have health issues, you should probably not hike it.

About a thirty minute hike to get to the top. I was able to see where the Ships park on the dock! Worth the visit!

As a 73 year old I thought I would be fit enough to do the Mount Roberts Trail. It looked quite easy on the map. I managed to get to the trail head through very interesting streets of Juneau. Once there I thought the better of it and decided I would not attempt it. However a young couple came along and they were going to do it. So I decided how bad could it be. I began the trek keeping in mind it was not maintained by the parks system and that a bear had been spotted in the gardens of the Governor's mansion that week. The trail was difficult at first but despite several stops to hydrate and rest, I was able to make it to the tram station in just over an hour and half. It was a beautiful day and the views along the trail made it worthwhile, To their credit the young couple kept an eye on me the whole way showing the kindness and hospitality of the Alaskan people.

This is a local favorite of mine. It's enjoyable in summer or winter.
Summer visits: Tram will be open. Enter up on Star Hill or up on Basin Road, there will be a sign visible in either location letting you know you've got the right place. About 1 hour hike up to the tram (sits @ 1800 ft above sea level) if you're in decent shape and don't take long breaks. It's a pretty steep trail so bring hiking shoes. The tram has offered different types of discounts for a trip down (if you hiked up) over the years, not sure what they're doing now but I'd wager it's in the $10 ballpark, maybe $20 if I'm being conservative. Check their website. You'll have a nice view of downtown Juneau and Douglas Island and, if you go a bit further, Mount Juneau. The trail continues along the ridge up to the peak of Mount Roberts but it's a pretty long hike, several hours I think - Don't recommend you go up much further than the cross if it's socked in (foggy), several hikers have gotten lost up here over the years I've lived there.
Winter: if you go in the winter bring cleats for the first part with tree canopy cover (it will likely be icy) and have snowshoes ready once you get just below alpine. Also be very careful and stay on the ridge if you go up past the tram to reduce likelihood of getting caught in an avalanche. The tram will be closed and you'll feel like you're out in the wilds despite being able to see Juneau down below. Still only takes about 1.5 hours to get up to the tram in the winter.

The trail starts at the cruise docks and with a semi steep slope you get to the top in an hour. If you take the cable car to the top, the trail continues following edges and small trail paths. Whichever you choose it is a breathtaking experience when you reach the top. Stunning views of Gastinau channel and beautiful nature.

Beautiful vertical hike of about 1800 feet elevation. Nice variety of pacific rainforest plants, varied mushrooms, berries, massive trees. Beautiful photo vistas and thankfully, resting areas as you go. Came down in torrential downpour and still beautiful....bring poncho, rain can come anytime. Can be muddy, have good hikers....and water with you.

The tram to the top of Mt. Roberts is a smooth ride. I have ridden other trams where they swayed and were jerky going over poles. I was told; however, that these cars can sway when wind is blowing. The view at the top is spectacular. Our day there was misty, but that didn't stop us. The hike can be treacherous on the slippery steps, so please take your time. It is well worth it when you reach the overviews. At the first fork, turn right if you don't want the strenuous climb.
Be sure to stop by and see the Eagle. Beautiful, majestic bird.

The trail is well mark and clear! It has steep areas and snow patches. Follow the trail and you will safe. Give yourself plenty time to go up & down. A map is ok but not all drastically necessary due to many trail markers.

Awesome scenery during the entire train ride. We were able to take pictures from a high point when we stopped for a break.

We are a family of four ages 62, 60, 20 and 19. We are not in particularly great shape but okay. It took us a little over two hours to hike to the top of Mount Roberts. The trail was well maintained but a little narrow. There were lots of switchbacks, tree roots, log steps and a bit of snow and mud. I used my walking stick and needed a hand from time to time to step up because I have a bad knee. It was a beautiful, exhilarating hike and we felt quite accomplished at the top. The view was spectacular and worth the hike. If you spend $15 each at the gift shop at the top, you get a free ride down on the tram. If you don't spend $15 each, the attendant just pushes you off the top. Just kidding!

Great easy tram ride $34/pp for entire day. Ride as many times as you want for that price but don’t know why you would need to ride more than once up & down in one day. So basically $34/pp round trip. Quick 4 minutes on the tram & you are fed into the gift shop. Lots of good items if you are into that kind of thing. Restaurant here also & nature film runs every 30 minutes. Bathrooms available in the tram station & near gift shop at top of mountain. Once you get through the gift shop the entrance to the trails is right there. They have made it very easy to access the gift shop, film, restrooms & trail as soon as you step off the tram. Just know that the trail starts easy but gets steep & gets your heart going. I made it up for about 5 minutes then decided to turn back. There is a good stair system but it is steep & no railings. And I’m a person who works out 2-3x week. Definitely not for children under 12years old or older people over 70years old unless they are used to aggressive exercise. Please don’t torture your dog either. I saw 65+years olds strolling with their to-go coffees headed towards the trail steps & they will not make it far. The first couple of minutes walk flat & fine but please older folks should know what they are getting into & finish their coffee first before start hiking up steep steps. Also the people in flip flops...what are you thinking? Beautiful views and nice nature center. But if you are not fit or just want to stroll with your coffee and/or flip flops stick to the flat trail and the gift shop & nature center area that is within steps of the tram. Also get there early before the crowds. I was there by 9am get there earlier if you are fit enough to walk the trails for the cool air. Also there are lots of flying bugs. Wear your bug spray or a Thermacell waist clipon or you will spend most of your time on the trail swatting away the bugs. It is worth the ride up if you are smart about it!

Take Basin Rd out of town and you come to a parking lot of the right hand side. The trail is 2.5 miles to the tram station and it is a strenuous climb. Great views on the way up and if you keep going you get to Father Johns cross. Is almost harder coming down than going up. Worth the time.

This would've been better if the weather would've cooperated but it was still a good thing to go on. When the fog lifts the scenery is beautiful. The nice part about the pass is you can go on this as many times in a day for one price so if the weather doesn't cooperate you have all day to wait and hope it changes.

1 hour and 40 minutes from cruise ship to mountain top tram. Some steep steps, and pretty muddy. Come prepared with comfortable hiking clothes—you’ll get sweaty. Some nice views and a good alternative to the cost of a round trip tram ride (~$35). $15 one way down on the tram, but can be substituted for $15 shop and/or restaurant purchase. They didn’t check our tram tickets/receipts though. A good active activity after lounging around the ship!

This was a great hike. Total of about 3+miles from hotel. Well maintained. Once at the gondola station the gift shop and food where great. With our receipt the ride down was free.

This is a good and relatively easy trail at the top of the tram. Admittedly I did not do much of it since it was raining, but the visitor center did have rain ponchos. There were plenty of activities and displays at the top.

Rip-off. $55 per person. Got to top and there was a line with a 90-minute wait to return to the bottom. The ticket salesperson said nothing to us about the wait time when we bought the tickets. Since we only allowed 2 hours, we had no option but to get in the return line as soon as we got to the top. Most of the people in line had the same experience so there was a lot of upset people. Besides that there was nothing to see anyway - a tourist trinket shop, snack bar and views not worth much. After experiencing Juneau's beauty from the wonderful Gastineau tour and the cruise ship, Mt Roberts was not even worth one photo. Very disappointing.

Having arrived at the top on the Tramway have your walking boots on to keep going higher on the hiking trails. They are not long but they are steep. Through the forest areas lots of tree roots to keep an eye on. Views are terrific. A sunnier day walk as it would be muddy on a wet day.

Excellent trail to burn some cruise ship overindulgent calories and enjoy great views. We hiked up and down the Mt Roberts Trail on a beautiful sunny day in June. The trailhead is a 15-20 minute walk from the cruise ship dock through a beautiful neighborhood of historic homes. The flowers were impressive. The trailhead is well marked and easy to find. Being from Colorado, we are used to steep trails and this one did not disappoint - it climbs! Bring a water bottle and bug spray. You'll be in the shady woods with lots of steps, roots and a few muddy wet crossings. The trail is well traveled and marked. It took us about an hour and a half round trip from the trailhead - allow about 2.5-3 hours for the whole trek from the cruise dock, especially if you want to look around the museum at the tram stop.
Not a trail for novice hikers - the roots will do their best to trip you and the climb is intense. Should be avoided on rainy days as the trail is all mud.

We took the tram up Mt Roberts and were rewarded with spectacular views of Juneau, Douglas, and the Gastineau Channel. We hiked a bit on the many trails at the top( more walking paths than trails, not strenuous at all) Great picture taking opportunities and we even spotted sheep in the distance. Tram operators gave a short narrative- oft repeated but not too robotic. Gift shop and restaurants at the top. Pleasant way to spend a sunny afternoon in Juneau.

We hiked up past Father Brown's cross and simply ran out of time before our next tour - wish we could have continued hiking farther up as it was absolutely beautiful up there with stunning views.

Not too steep but still challenging. Switchbacks and uneven footing -- mud, roots, rocks. Great views! We hiked up, had lunch and got a free tram ride down. Excellent way to spend the morning.

Took this hike in the pouring rain and cold of the day. In spite of that it is a great area to explore. We went on up to Alaska"s oldest road and hiked along a roaring river with beautiful falls. Getting up to the trail is a bit of a hike from downtown or I think you might be able to access some of it by riding the Tram up to the top.
A certain level of fitness would be necessary if you hike all the way up. Either way it is pretty stunning up Perseverance Trail and Mount Roberts Trail.

A beautiful and easy hike (I think they advertise it as a half mile loop) with breathtaking scenery. There were a lot of people out for a rainy day and the trail is a little bit slick in the rain.

We hiked up the way that had no stairs, just incline, and it was great. Part of the hike is in the trees, then you come out to the views and they are wonderful. We hiked up to the cross and a little further. In early May parts of it were snowy and icy but with proper shoes it’s easily navigated. The tram runs from the cruise docks and is good all day. You can take as long as you want on this hike. So go enjoy nature.

It is not an easy hike, but worth the effort! Lots of great views of the surroundings and spectacular view at the summit. We did take the tram down.

We went later in the day to avoid the cruise ship impact of people to the city. We had an easy ride to the top and we observed tribal members carving totem poles, a rescue eagle up close, and had drinks/snack at the bar. All was clean and well done. The price is not inexpensive but we enjoyed our time.

We started this hike from the trailhead on Basin Road after parking our car in town, but there is some parking at the trailhead. It is a sometimes steep but enjoyable climb through the rainforest up to the tram. From the tram up to the Cross overlooking Gastineau Channel, the trail is wide and has plenty of visitors from the tram. The trail leaves the forest and becomes sub-alpine. Beyond the cross the crowd thins out considerably and the serious hike begins. In places they have placed large rocks stair step fashion but there are also spots where you scramble up loose rock. Occasionally the trail splits and you have a choice of which route to take at the base of a steep section. Usually the trails meet back up as soon as you crest that rise but occasionally they go their own way for a bit. Take your hiking sticks and plenty of water and food to eat as you will burn calories on the climb. Looking down on Juneau (not to mention Bald Eagles, airplanes, and mountain goats if you're lucky) is amazing from the top and then you realize that you are not at Mt. Roberts peak. Gastineau Peak is an amazing viewpoint, but if you want to get to the top of Mt. Roberts you have another mile of trail to go which includes a descent to a saddle ridge and another steep trail up. Reward yourself with a cold one or a shot of tequila and a cold one back at the tram.

Great hike. Fairly steep but 2.5 miles of beautiful forest. Plus you get to meet many nice local out for a stroll, including an octogenarian.

we debated over this trail for about a month before arriving, whether to hike up, or down or both, or neither.... our kids are 8,11 and 13. there were a lot of pluses for doing the hike up the mt. and a lot of pluses for taking the trail down. once you get to the top where the tram leaves you, there a 3 miles of hiking to the top.... so we decided to take the tram both ways and walk from there.
i found it a bit nerve racking, as the path is very narrow, and in most parts there is nothing to guard you from slipping, or falling over.... it sounds a bit too paranoid, but we heard some stories from locals that made us be extra cautious. so keep that in mind if that is an issue.
it was very crowded when we went, and we made it to the cross (which is less than a mile from where the tram drops you off))... after that, i really could not keep going.... the walk isnt bad, it was just a bit to scary !!!!!
there are a few places to look at the view, a couple of gift shops, a rescued eagle, a theater, restaurant, a jewlery store, restrooms, etc.....
definately worth doing at least part of the trail, if not all.
keep in mind:
the locals do recommend if you decide to hike, to wear apropriate boots and a walking stick if you have !!!!
if it had been rainy the days before you go, as it rains most days in juneau, it can get very slippery, so be even more careful.

Very much worth it to take the tram up the mountain and walk the trails.
We enjoyed it so much that we went up there twice!
Tip: Go first thing in the morning. The lines are shorter. The afternoon return trip can be a long time. The line for the afternoon return (4pm-6pm) was long.....so long..... If you see that line, best to wait it out.
Tip: Be sure to walk up the trail to the right. Great Views, and less than 30 minutes walking.
Now the review and what we did:
First note that I do not like tram rides in general, as I am wary of the technology breaking at those heights. Yet this tram is very safe. The ride is short. The tram structure is durable. You can take the ride and enjoy the views.
When you get to the top, there are several things to see. First are the wood carvers. They are working on a new totem pole. Watch them. They also enjoy answering your questions.
There is also a lead carver roaming around. He is happy to show you things and take pictures.
There is a trail up further to the right. Absolutely take that trail. There are several places to stop and look out. The views are amazing at each of those stops. Also, you only need a few minutes (less than 30 total) to reach the top view spot. The trail goes on from there, but I didn't proceed. But those views from there...very much worth it!
Back by the tram, around to the left, is another trail. This is more in the trees, and also enjoyable. I turned back after 40 minutes.
We enjoyed it so much that we went up there twice!
Also check out the gift shop. It is actually better than most. Good science books. (I bought two). And get to touch various furs.
One of the best things to do in Alaska. Recommend highly.

This excursion was well worth it. Learn about the history of the area. Also had an exhibit of a Bald Eagle.

I walked this trail when on a stay in Junea. There are two possibilities: going up part way in a cable car or walking from down town Junea. Most people go via the cable car which means that the walk up is quiet as far as the cable car. You are then confronted by hundreds of people who have arrived via the cable car. However if you continue the walk past the cross you will leave the crowds behind. The mountain itself is lovely with spectacular views and there is a good trail the whole way up it.

On a a clear day, wow, the scenery overlooking the cruise ships and Juneau is outstanding. Nice place at the top to walk around and explore, great overlook views

We hiked up Mt. Roberts and caught the tram back down. Easy hike with great views towards the top. If you only want to hike one way, you can ride the tram back down for a small fee. If you spend $10 (per person) or more at the tram cafe or gift shop you ride for free.

nice ride to the top of Roberts trail. lots of trail and the visitors center is a nice reflection on the areas history!

I spent about 3 hours hiking after riding the tram up to the welcome center but wished I had at least a full day to hike and take more photos. With as much daylight in the summer months it is nice the tram ticket is good all day for multiple trips.

From the cruise ship docks you will need to walk about a mile to get to the base of the trail. We asked a shop keeper and then a gal walking her dog and it is a well known trail. My husband and I are avid hikers and in pretty good shape and the walk up the trail to the tram took about 90 minutes, it was a challenge at times and muddy. So worth it though and didn't cost anything. We purchased some souvenirs at the gift shop and got to ride the tram down at no additional cost ($10 spent in store=1 person down tram).

This is a nice trail time permitting. You can go up and around. See map at the visitors center and decide how much of the trail you want to do.

We took the tram and then hiked up the mountain top at 1800' for a breathtaking view of the docks & ships below. As it was drizzling, we couldn't take the trail at Mt Roberts.

I love the ride up, the views and the fact that passes are all day, you can go up and down and the change in the landscape as the tide comes in - or goes out is amazing.

I had a hard time with the ride up .. I have a fear of heights but I will do this again .. the hike on top is stunning

The trail is a challenge, but well worth the effort. The scenery & views from the top of the trail made the effort worth it! At various points along the trail, you can take a breath and photos of the harbor, vistas & town of Juneau below. Must be in the air about 1700 ft. You can also see the Mt. Roberts Tramway going up and down the mountainside. After you get of the trail you can ride down the mountain on the tram, but not until you have an opportunity to visit the gift shop and the resident wounded eagle who is being cared for by the local bird society. The whole experience is truly worth a visit for a relative small fee!

This is a great stop. pretty difficult due to rapid elevation gain, but the view cant be beat. I was happy with the trek.

An excellent hike from downtown Juneau
About 2.5 miles long, steep but beautiful hike through the temperate rainforest surrounding Juneau
Summit has a cafeteria, gift shop and rapture center where wounded eagle is being rehabilitated
Excellent series of trails from the summit to continue on to Mount Roberts Peak

We hiked the three hour walk through the rain forest to the summit of Mt. Roberts. While the rain was pleasant for the first two miles or so, we were unprepared for the sleet, high winds, and very cold weather at the top. Even if partly cloudy and not raining at the top of the tram, bring rain gear and warm waterproof jacket for the summit. Very beautiful at the top and the snow is still very present in the upper altitudes. Berries and flowers grow all the way up the trail. Worth it if you can make it, but be prepared!

Even though it was raining we ventured out onto the trail. We did not go all the way to the top but did get to Father Brown's cross. Trail was well signposted and in good condition.

My husband and I hiked this trail when we stopped in Juneau on an Alaskan cruise. It was the only excursion that we did that we did not book through the cruise and it ended up being our favorite. There are different levels of the trail and there is a sign/map that tells you how far to each stop. If you plan on hiking pretty far I recommend taking a snack and some water. The trail has absolutely breathtaking views and the higher we got the better the views. This was my absolute favorite activity we did in Alaska and I highly recommend taking the tram up and taking a hike!

My wife and I hiked from our hotel on Egan Dr to the trailhead off Basin Rd, then hiked up to the Tram. Due to substantial rain the past few weeks, the trail was damp throughout and wet/muddy in a few areas. The 2-2.5 mile one-way trail is pretty to easy to follow despite few signs along the way (thus the 4-star review versus 5-star). I would call the hike strenuous, particularly the first 1/2 mile or so off the Basin Rd trailhead. Covid restrictions have closed the tram, therefore the only way to get to the great viewing platform atop Mt Roberts is to hike. Multiple teams of hikers passed us, many locals who hike the trail routinely (one guy mentioned he was only hiking the trail once today instead of his usual twice). We're in moderate shape and it took 1.75 hours to go up the trail, one hour to come down the trail...conservatively plan three hours for round trip hike.

Highly recommend to walk their trail. If you have limited time - just go towards right of the gift shop to see the channels. It sure is beautiful. If you are airline employees- shows your company ID for possible discount ticket price!

If you go to the top of the tramway, take the time to hike the trails. They aren't too difficult and the views are so worth the effort.

We hiked the gnarly uphill trail to the top--it's pretty steep the whole way with lots of large steps in places. The rewarding view at the top is SO worth all the sweat & panting! We had a beer at the top, saw a marmot, took in the view, then took the tram/gondola down to the bottom (free if you spend $10 at the top in the bar/restaurant) as the sun was just starting to set (at 9:15pm!!!). Easily marked, great trail if you don't mind hiking pretty much straight uphill the whole way up.

Steep hike, but our kids (ages 6-10) had no problems on the trail. Took about 90 minutes from the 6th Street trailhead to get to the tramway. Muddy trail, but well maintained and a good option for first time hiking in Juneau. Excellent gift shop and nature center at the tramway. The best views of the channel are AFTER the tramway though.
There are two trailheads - the one at 6th Street is not maintained, but still popular with locals. Very steep for the first 250 yards. The other is Basin Road which is the maintained one, but longer.

My family and I took the tram up to the top of Mount Roberts and saw the bald eagle, shopped in the cute tourist store, and walked the half mile loop at the top. It was a good way to spend a few hours. We had perfect weather and were able to see some amazing views! The only downside was that my teenaged son wanted to hike the 2.5 miles back down the mountain and I refused. I’m so mean. ;)

Variety of trails at the top of Mt. Roberts. Easily accessible using the tram. Good views of Juneau as well as getting further into woods.

My wife and I really enjoyed this hike. We took the tramway up and then began our hike. The views were the best that we saw out of any of our hikes. We wish we would've allowed more time so we could've gone further. Make sure to take your time as some of the trail sections can be steep with loose gravel and rocks.

The Fr. Brown trail starts at the Nature Center at the top of the tramway and ascends about 300' to the Cross overlooking the harbor. Definitely worth the climb.

We enjoyed our visit to Mt. Roberts. The staff from the tramway to everyone at the top of the Mountain were very friendly. We enjoyed the movie and the lady who introduced the movie was very interesting. Our best meal in Juneau was at the restaurant at Mt. Roberts. There are many hiking trails that were great. From the cross near one of the peaks you can get a great view of Juneau harbor.

Easily accessible trail from the tramway with superb views of Gastineau Channel leading into Juneau. The incline is probably a mildly challenging but can be strenuous depending how far and high you hike. Water, good hiking shoes are a must. Hiking poles or staff is helpful.

This review includes the gondola ride and two trials at the top. We had an hour to explore the view before another tour. We thoroughly enjoyed our ride up and down the gondola in the early morning because there was a fascinating gentleman operator who shared his native culture through music, rhymes, drumming and stories. At the top there was a cafe, gift store and trials. The resident eagle was still "sleeping". We hit the trails and almost stepped on a crossing ptarmigan bird. Many birds can be viewed darting in and out of the brush. Even our Pennsylvania Robin was there w/ us. We walked the trail that led to a cross. Sadly, we did not have time to look through he gift shop or see the movie. Hopefully...next time.

We took a taxi here from Mendenhall Glacier and hiked to the top of the tram. If you spend $10 at the gift shop you can get a free tram ticket down to the bottom. What a deal! The hike was mostly uphill but doable if you take it slow, even if you are in average shape.

Took the Mt. Roberts Tram and had lunch at the top prior to walking the trail. Some breath taking views and the camera hog Marmot along the trail stole the show.

Great hike through nature.... Some of the best photos here. Make sure you walk to the cross.... Bug spray is a good thingt= to bring also....

It was raining when we were there, so we didn't do the whole trail. Lots of Eagles and ravens along the way, totem figures carved into trees and grand views across the landscape. It helps to be fit for this one and not accessible for walkers or wheelchairs.

This is a 4 mile round trip hike. Going up is a vertical rise of 1,800 feet so you'd better be in shape do to this. It is a busy trail and there are hikers with dogs. At the top is a visitor center and restaurant. We took the tram back down to Juneau and you can ride for free if you spend $10 in the gift shop. I recommend this in-town hike for active people as the view at the top is well worth the effort getting there.

Hiking up the back trail of Mount Roberts seems to be a fairly well kept secret. If you're looking for a nice stretch right near town, try it. The views are spectacular, and if you buy some little thing in the gift shop, you'll get a free ride down on the lift, which is another adventure.
Be sure to take your time and open your eyes. Observe the wildlife tracks and the plants. I saw a porcupine, and there were mushrooms, ferns, and so many wildflowers.
Don't forget your camera!

This is a great unexpected attraction. We had our last day in Juneau free and decided to take the tram up to view the city from there. It's amazing! There is a nice cultural video on the Tlingit clans in the center, a restaurant that was busy, although we didn't try it, some concessions and shops. We were going to take the short .5 mile loop hike, but enjoyed is so much we went about 2 miles up the mountain. It's a vigorous hike, but the views are simply amazing and well worth the effort!

This is an uphill hike all the way. The trail is in good condition and offers views of Mt Juneau and the Gold Creek Basin. At the top you can get a good view of the channel. And, for those with knee issues, you can take the tram down for a nominal fee (or by showing a receipt for spending money at the restaurant or store

Taking the tramway about 1700 up the mountain gets you to a nice group of trails that provide great views of the surrounding landscape. The day we were there, there was quite a bit of fog and the trails were a little muddy, but it was still a fun experience.

The day was clear and beautiful... the climb was great exercise... for some this trail could be a challenge. The view was wonderful of Juneau and the Bay... The cost to get to the Trail on the tram - was a bit more steep than the climb itself - $33 per person.

Nice hike through well maintained trail. Bring lots of water, mosquito repellant, and sun screen. It is quite an elevation gain but not difficult. There is a cross at the top of the hill or you can continue on the trail for miles further. We saw lots of marmots playing around.

Good hike and gets you out of town away from the cruise boats. You need a reasonable fitness level as the walk is steep. However, the scenery is beautiful and worth the effort.

Went for the views, not the hiking. There were good views of the city and was an excellent opportunity to take pictures.

At the top of the cable car running up the side of Mount Roberts (visible from the sea front) there are trails that can be taken to walk on a bit further - which makes it all the more interesting as a consequence.
There are some semi-challenging paths that do involve ascent and descent but a reasonably enjoyable experience nevertheless.
So don't just go for the ride do have a walk around at the top.

If you like to walk and hike, you'll love doing this trail. First, I walked from downtown Juneau to the trailhead. It's an interesting climb up Franklin Street, across 7th to Gold and then on to Basin Rd. The houses just hang on the hillside and the views of Juneau and the mountains are wonderful. The trail itself has lots of rocks, roots and mud - wear good shoes and take a jacket with a hood for the rain/drizzle. The view from the top is spectacular and as long as you spend $10 in the restaurant or gift shop, the ride down the tram is free. (My understanding is the price for both ways on the tram is $33, so this can save you money and give you exercise as well!)

We were lucky that someone told us about the trail and so in need of exercise we decided to do it. It's not easy to find the beginning of the walk but we did after going wrong a couple of times. The walk up is wet in places so make sure you have decent shoes on.
If you walk up and get the cable car back you can travel for free if you spend 10 dollars in the gift shop. This is what we did. There is a fair amount of things to do at the top of the cable car but you can walk further for a better view. We saw 2 bald eagles sitting in the trees on our way down. Your ticket gives you access to the cable car all day apparently.
We saw bear warnings but they are in the area mainly in spring apparently.

As you have to climb to the mountain it is better to choose a good weather, cause up there could be cold. I think the best time to climb is in the beginning of the season, when you can still find lots of snow. In the end of the season is usually more sun, the view is amazing!

This is on the pricey side, you go up on the tram which is a quick short ride, but the main thing is I wish there were more to do on the top of the mountain verses a restaurant, eagle, shop, and trails. It was raining so going on the trails wasn't a good option but honestly its a lovely view either way. I enjoyed it but we did want more for the price we paid.

The trails were far more extensive than I thought going in and I wish we'd saved more energy and time for the Mount Roberts trails. If you enjoy hiking and scenic views, plan to spend several hours at the top.

Go for the views. The trail is walkable BUT there are some steep steps. Bring water. Don't miss the 450 year old hemlock. For the adventurous, you can hike to the top and ride down the gondola.

This is a beautiful place to tour - very peaceful. don't plan on more than 30 minutes - the ride there is beautiful and if your Christian you will appreciate

We took the tram to the top on a rainy day. So it rains in a rain forest and we loved it. The trail at the top is easy and beautiful. You can enjoy blueberries in August, and the views are great. Wear hiking boots especially if it rains, can be slippery. The little visitore center is great and very welcoming. A hot cider is a good way to end the hike.

We hiked from the 6th street entrance, which is marked as closed and to be honest probably should be, but being adventurous we did it anyways since the Basin road entrance was farther away. It was raining the day we went so the trails were a sloppy mess. The 6th street trail was pretty treacherous but with a walking stick and a slow pace it was fine. It took us about 3 hours total to get to the tram and for a while it felt like the trail would never end. We were the only people on the trail the entire time. It was a hard, rewarding hike and by no means an easy feat. Not sure it would be safe for dogs or kids, maybe on a nicer day? We spent $10 each at the gift shop to get a "free" ride down on the tram. Totally worth it and would recommend this hike!

Several ways to ascend these trails once you get to the top either via tram or walking up.
Well marked trails can go in several different ways, some wooden steps along the way.
Closer to the Tram are 2 separate decks so to speak to look over the beautiful water views below
Definitely worth the walk around

Moderate difficulty and trails were easy to follow! Great view at the top. (Same view as available if taking the tram.) Mostly lush greenery during hike itself. Recommend hiking boots (little muddy).

Not to be missed! We walked from the cruise ship and were able to get onto the tram quickly. The view on the rides up and down is beautiful. Others complained about the cars being crowded but we the first ship in so it wasn't full. The movie in the theater is worth seeing. We hiked the short trail. The views from the overlooks are spectacular. Don't miss the balk eagle. We lucked out and were on the way down to tour the town before the rain.

Once our ship arrived in Juneau, we took the Mount Roberts tour. Our guide Kayla took us through town first where we saw the life like whale statue. Then we took the tram up the mountain and then started a trek through the forest. It was rainy but still clear enough to see out a ways. I am 70 yrs old and in ok shape. This was difficult for me. I did make it all the way but the first part is all uphill on rugged trails, so the breathing got a bit difficult. Coming back down the trail was much easier. Then we went to the teahouse for samples of teas and jellies. That was a good way to finish a cold rainy tour. We did really enjoy our guide Kayla. How I wish I were her age again! Wouldn't recommend this to anyone with breathing problems or anyone who can't walk very well.

We had some extra time to spare, and it was too late to book another excursion so we took the tram up to Mount Robert. Since we did not do the trail, we are not sure what else we may have been able to do. However, the fee for taking the tram was worth the view. The pictures we took looking down on the city and port are incredible. Spend the extra couple of dollars, take your pictures and smile as you show them off to your friends. And don't forget to take a picture of Lady Baltimore.

I took the tram to the Mount Roberts trail, a 7.6 mile out and back, difficult trail. The views of Juneau and the Mendenhall glacier were very nice.
Some sections of the trail were relatively narrow, but I never felt my safety was threatened.
However, some sections of the trail were covered with plants and I suffered some minor rashes afterward.
There were hikers with and without dogs on the trail, and one family was camped near the midpoint of the trial, so I was never alone.
I got by without my hiking poles.

Our family of 4 challenged ourselves to this steep climb which is on the back side of Mt. Roberts starting at the far end of town from the cruise ships. We took a taxi and are glad we did as the steep streets would have worn us out before the hike began. The trail was well marked and quite steep - especially for our family which is used to living at sea level. The hike took approx 1 hour and then we had a meal at the top before taking the tram down. We got some nice local info from the tram operator on the way down and continued to be impressed by the welcoming nature of the folks we met. Our kids are 12 and 15 - I wouldn't take this hike with young children unless they are accustomed to steep climbs.

Nice views from the top. Then walked one of the trails, which is fine to walk alone. I walked past the cross a little bit, but didn’t go much further. I don’t think you need to worry about bears.

We walked up Main Street to Sixth street and made a left onto Basin Street... From here, there are signs to Mr Roberts Trail and a small parking area. No sooner had we started the trail, then we were met by tall hemlock and spruce trees hovering above a forest floor of moss and green foliage. The trail was easy to navigate because it was often made up of tree roots and limbs. It took us about 1.5 hours to climb 3000ft with plenty of scenic picture stops along the way. There is a tramway on the other side of the mountain, which costs $33. In the nature shop across from the tramway at the top, we learned that Mt Roberts trail is considered a "difficult" climb.... For 2 people that enjoy hiking, but do not get a chance to climb often, we classed it as a medium hike. At the top, the view over the Gastineau channel and the mountain range was well worth the climb. There is also a restaurant at the top, so you can relax and hydrate a little. Mt Roberts is a must do experience !

We walked the gold ridge trail (13258 ft). It's about an hours walk but well worth it for the stunning views. The short film 15 minute at the visitor centre was worth seeing to learn a little about the history of the town and its people

Plan to spend a few hours up at the top of the mountain. Some lovely hikes, albeit a little muddy. Stunning views. Local artists. Very enjoyable.

We really enjoyed this hike, but were glad we had our walking boots and poles, it is steep in places and the track has a lot of roots on the path so you must watch where you are walking. The path is maintained but could be slippery when wet. A great feeling walking through the forest and plenty of places to take a brake, bring water but no food as there are bears around we saw evidence of droppings; lots of local do the track and told us they have never had problems with bears. If you like walking do it a wonderful vista waits you when you get there and you are away from the crowds off the cruise ships in Juneau

Just the walk from your cruise ship to the Trailhead is a 30 minute uphill trek. Then we hiked two and half miles up the mountain to the Visitor's Center and Tram. It is a beautiful trail with great views and lush forest. It is not hard but it's all uphill. Unless you are a spandex hiker, plan to take your time as you will need to rest periodically. If you are not in reasonable shape - don't go; pay for the tram. We hiked up, spent $ in the gift shop and then got the free tram ride back.

You can do this trip for free if you are willing to hike up and down. If you want to ride the tram it is more pricey. The hikes up at the top are nice and give you a good view of the whole town.

Took tram, then a great ridge day hike to Mt Roberts with views galore on a sunny day - highly recommended

Hard but beautiful and very doable trail. At the top (last 15 minutes) there's snow and ice and it can get slick. It's also a little tough to find the tail in the snow. It's worth going a little past the tram to the overlooks. Juneau is so beautiful! It was too snowy to go up to the cross. Highly recommend!

Forget the tram to the top, hike Mount Roberts trail! It was a relatively easy hike to the top - where you meet up with the restaurant and tram... but go a little bit further (to the cross and above) to get the extra awesome views. It doesn't add much time to your hike, and totally worth it.
We hiked to the trailhead from the doc (which was a hike in itself) - about 1.5 miles (we had a far doc due to multiple cruises). It was a little tough to find, but you walk completely through and past town to Basin Rd... a little before the Last Chance Mining Museum. It was pretty cool to see the residential area of Juneau, though, so walking wasn't a big deal.
The trail was about 2.5 to the top, and we took the tram down. It took us a couple hours with a longer stop at the top.
Beware - the tram line to get down can get long. We waited about a half hour - which is short compared to previous reviews. They do have wait signs so you know how long you can expect to wait, but I think it went a little faster than they estimated.

If you cruise into Juneau this tram is very close to the dock. Buy tickets right there. Around 35.00. Very solid ride to top. About 1800 ft. Stay as long as you want then ride down. Beautiful views of the entire city. Food available at top. We then grabbed a local taxi to show us the area. 70.00 total for 2 hours and that is divided if you have 2 couples.

We love Mt. Roberts Tram and the views from above. The hiking trails are nice for beginners, totem poles etc. Good views at certain times. But mostly foggy. But unlike the brochure states, it is not wheelchair friendly. For one, it is almost always foggy and wet at the peak which makes much of the trail muddy. My husband attempted to use the trail and he felt uneasy. He slid in mud in his wheelchair a couple of times. He opted out of the family hike and hung out in the gift store etc.

My suggestion is to go a little later in the day. This way you beat the crowds from the cruise ship. When we went there at 3 we had no line.....it was raining, but still my kids enjoyed themselves thoroughly. The exhibits, trails, and vista points up there will keep you occupied. The bald eagle exhibit up there is not to be missed.

We really enjoyed and easy walk/hike up to the top. You get to a point where the trail ends, put if you keep on walking up the view is fantastic. We saw a few marmots. Not sure of the variety, but they are adorable.

This trail goes for a couple of miles up the mountain and is very well marked. There are signs at the trail head that tell you distances to certain points, so you can do as much or little as you are comfortable with. It is a climb over uneven terrain which will be no big deal if you are a regular hiker, but may be quite challenging if you are not. However, the walk to the first overlook is only a few hundred yards and is definitely worth it at the least.

Rode the tram to the top and enjoyed our time up there for over an hour. Great views on a clear and sunny day.

I just read some of the reviews and realized we could have walked up instead of taking the tram. Though with the rain coming, I'm glad we didn't. The trail at the top was a nice walk that affords really nice views of Juneau and the surrounding mountains and waterways. Being there in June also meant wildflowers and active birds.
Be prepared for rain and changing temperatures. The trail is well-maintained, but could be slippery in the rain.

Rather undersold as "if you have time left over" excursion, this ride up the tram and the hike at the top should be a MUST DO when in Juneau. We did this at the end of our day and there was only a very short wait to ride up. The ride itself is great for the view but wait until you get to the top and take the LOOP trail. A beautiful forest with ever expansive views await.

A beautiful well marked trail with the enticement of beer and french fries at the top. How can you beat that?

After fighting your way through numerous tourists in the gift shops you will finally find the entrance to the trail. There are a number of trails at the top ranging from 0.5m and upwards. If you have the time it’s worth exploring the longer trails as they are quiet and provide the most amazing views of the surrounding areas.

We took the gondola ride to the top of Mount Roberts, it is a quick 7-8 minute ride and costs $35.00 per person. There are a variety of activities to do at the top, and most involve walking trails of various lengths. We did not have time for a long hike and chose to do one of the shorter trails, this one led to Father Robert's Cross. It was an easy 45 minute round trip along well maintained and well trodden paths. The views from the top are wonderful and cover the whole inlet and up the valley. The small

This was a challenging climb but worth the effort. A small gift shop and museum at top. Great views of the port below. Hikers are able to ride the Tram down for $10 (or spend $10 on gifts/food for a free ride down).

We took the tram up, explored the visitor center, met Lady Baltimore, and hiked the trails up top. The trails offered great views, especially since it was a clear day.
Taking the tram to the top then walking the trail is an easy fun activity on a nice day. The trail is well maintained and easy to walk, the rewards are great Views
