Don’t hesitate to go

By Bony56003 |

The Museum of Houston did a great job getting all these pieces together. They are all over the world pieces and what I learned this is the largest collection been together.
The first room are only reproduction of the real ones made by Van Gogh school of art.
They have an interactive room for kids. It’s a great idea to have something to do with toddlers.
We went Sunday and was busy day. We came back Friday morning and was much better and we enjoyed it more

Very Good Museum

By Alejandro Z |

This is a very interesting museum. I was here with my daughter and had a very good time enjoying their exhibits.

Lots to see

By ge0teach84 |

Lots to see. Different buildings to walk through. Paintings from various time periods. Egyptian artifacts.Next building had Iranian, Indian, Asian artifacts.

fine, indeed

By MelissaWP |

We visited this museum on our first day in Houston after arriving from our flight in. We stayed for three hours, but needed more time to really get a fuller and slower paced experience. This place was massive and impressive, but VERY cold. We spent about an hour alone in the MC Escher exhibit, which was awesome.

Beautiful Art

By Nicole G. W. |

We went to this museum after the Museum of Natural Science and it was wonderful. The art was amazing and there is so much to see. Thursday’s are free (except for additional exhibits they have) so go on a Thursday if you can! We spent about 3 hours walking around and it was rather quiet which made it more enjoyable. We all had a great time there!

MFA, Houston

By Kathleen B |

Wonderfully large and modern MFA. We saw the Norman Rockwell Exhibit which was more thought-provoking than expected. A wonderful way to spend the day..But never enough time to see everything!

Van Gogh Exhibit

By Graciela W |

Wow! What a treat! It was an incredible collection of Vincent Van Gogh masterpieces. There were also some reproductions of his notebooks as well as biographical information. There was also an area of interactive materials for the youngsters that was fun, well planned, colorful, and interesting even for the not-so-young. I give it a thumbs up!!

go there during the free admission Thursdays

By ELKW |

it's free admission to the permanent collection every Thursday, so we went there during the free admission time, although admission if free on Thursday, you still need to pay the parking which was $10 at the time we went there.
It's just like an ordinary museum, showing the art of different regions, e.g. Egypt, Greece, etc. also has some modern art, but there is a room with lights hanging in a mirror room which is beautiful, but you need to line up and wait to enter that room, but worth to go in.

Beautiful

By Manon C |

Beautiful museum that features an amazing variety of collections from all eras and from all over the world. You need to at least spend an entire afternoon. Free on Thursdays ;)

Museum with a wonderful collection, currently housing the Van Gogh exhibit.

By Ronak S |

We were in Houston for a few days, and had to check out the museum, especially for the Vincent Van Gogh: His life in art Exhibit. The exhibit was extremely crowded and made me question the museum etiquette of most Americans. They're extremely loud, DO NOT move when listening to their audio guides or on their phones crowding around pieces, talk on their phones, and like robots they need to do see it all in one order creating massive queues instead of entering a room and spreading out!

Anyway, the exhibit was alright. I expected a lot more of Vincent Ven Gogh's iconic pieces - his sunflowers, more of his self portraits, Starry Night (since it's already in a US museum (MoMA)), bedroom in Arles, more of the olive trees, ... but I was disappointed. The exhibit is divided into different rooms, almost chronologically. The first room has only "reproductions" and all his diaries and postcards were not originals and mere reproductions. The exhibit had some interesting paintings - one of his self-portraits, that of his brother, Theo, his irises, and numerous other works. The exhibit ended with an interactive room, where you can "live" art - pose for pictures in life-size recreations of his paintings like his room in the Yellow House at Arles, the street cafe at Arles, his studio, ... That was pretty cool.

Apart from that, the museum has a vast collection of art - spread over 2 separate buildings connected by an underground tunnel. It was a little confusing to be honest. I saw some of the other rooms (not all, was a little short on time). There were classical pieces, paintings by European painters, and American artists too - Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollock, Constance Mayer, William Merit Chase, and others.

The museum has a nice collection and one can easily spend an entire day there. Get in there early, as queues get really long, especially for the Van Gogh exhibit. The docents and staff are very kind and helpful, and rather informative. You could save yourself time and buy tickets online and head straight for the entry. It opens late on Sundays, so keep that in mind.

By Philip C |

I cannot build much on the stellar reviews that this world class Museum offers. But I will say that you need to allocate a full day to visit all three buildings and take in the special exhibits. Plus we ran into the most helpful and involved group of guards protecting the collection.

Wonderful permanent collection and impressive short term traveling exhibits

By ViewChaser |

We have enjoyed this museum for 20+ years. We were very glad they did a large expansion years ago which allowed more gallery space for their impressive permanent collection and plenty of space for numerous traveling exhibits throughout the year. The layout can be a little confusing as all works are housed in two buildings across the street from one another. A convenient tunnel allows access to both. Be sure to study the map and/or ask one of the helpful staff to confirm location of what you are looking for. The gift shop has some terrific items for sale. Sadly the cafe on sight is convenient but not all that great. Once upon a time Cafe Express ran their cafe and the food was delicious. That has changed and food is now so-so BUT if it means you can grab a quick bite and return to the exhibit halls for further viewing without having to leave, drive elsewhere, fight traffic and return later then its probably worth it.

One of the best regional art museums

By Karen R |

Houston has a history of big oil money pouring into the arts, the community, medicine, restaurants - some of the best in the world. This is a gem of an art museum, with a solid classical collection and is truly a destination worthy of special exhibits. It anchors an unrivaled museum district with other shrines to the best humanity has to offer.

New building (Kinder)...filled with "art" that has little appeal, and you wonder why it was bought.

By Osage2112 |

Much anticipated tour of the new Kinder building of the Museum of Fine Art Houston.
It was billed as the new extension that would allow a greater number of in-storage works (MFAH has works by Wyeths that hardly ever see the light of day) to finally be put on display.
The space was IMPRESSIVE...a GREAT addition to the complex...but the art.
Oh, don't get me wrong, there are Dalis, Picassos, Pollocks, Warhols represented...but there's also an over abundance of what looks more like "found" art than art.
Oh don't be a prude...I'm well aware of the semantics of the "meaning" of "art" ...but honestly. There's a friggin' Contemporary Arts Museum RIGHT NEXT DOOR for crimey's sake.
I don't like having someone say, hey, come look at all our Fine Art...and it winds up being string, wires, bricks and tubs full of water...don't pi$$ down my neck and tell me it's raining.
HOPEFULLY after MFAH has their galas and get their press, they'll revert back to displaying the MASSIVE COLLECTION OF FINE ART THEY POSSESS.
Love the building, but whomever decided to fill the space with that "art" really dropped the ball...HEY, that could be a piece I create and sell to MFAH..."Dropped the ball" ca. 2020...choice.

Improve learning for visitors

By Boo B |

Please please consider adding audio to your MFAH app, which is quite rudimentary in current state. Having well defined audio that visitors can access with their phone increases the immersion, understanding, appreciation and retain of lovely background information. The clumsy hand held audios offered for the special exhibits are relics.....please please modernize 😊

One of the best in the world!

By DCNado |

I'm a serious art collector who's been to many museums worldwide. MFAH is clearly among the best. I was impressed!

Variety of displays

By Susan E |

Interesting permanent collection which includes decorative and modern arts. Outdoor sculpture garden with rooftop views over the school/garage. Traveling exhibitions are what I usually go for.

Impressionists Exhibit

By Don G |

Went to the Impressionist Exhibit. Another amazing offering from MFA Houston. Starts with an amazing collection of works from Berthe Misinot. The first female impressionist. Was not familiar with her work. It was very impressive. Rest of the exhibit is a wide variety of works from Monet, Manet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Gaughan, Pissarro and others. Finishes with a few works from the early 20th century including works by Matisse and Picasso.
Definitely take the audio speakers and allow about two hours to fully appreciate the Exhibit.

Memorable ….

By LondonLockwood |

Excellent way to spend a few hours .. Not all the works shown were to my liking but worth the admission for the Monet alone .
Staff were super helpful.. As a visitor to the City it’s a must do . Enjoy.

Great!

By susan b |

Recently saw the terrific Van Gogh show. Don't miss the other exhibitions as well! Always something interesting on display. Great variety. Be sure to visit the shows across the street.

Very nice museum

By Robin B |

This is a very large, spread-out museum. We knew the particular exhibitions we wanted to see so we headed there directly (with a lot of directions from the staff), and we spent about 1-2 hours. This is a very nice museum, but I can believe it would take 3-4 trips to see everything there is to see. Our GPS took us to the museum. If you are driving, call head and get the address of the parking garage, which has underground walkways that you can take directly to the museum because there’s no street parking.

Literally 3 Buildings of Art to View

By Rftstar |

It doesn't matter what type of art you like, there is a lot of something for everyone. By far the largest collection of art I have seen in one place. Plan on spending at a minimum a few hours upwards to a full day to get through everything.

Always a special day to spend here!

By Chrisinkingwood2 |

I took my granddaughter to the museum as she was off for the MLK holiday. She is 17 and loves to paint and draw but also photography. We toured much of the main collection and then did the special Norman Rockwell exhibit. The special exhibit was good, we got the free audio sets and took time to learn about different works. My only complaint was they mixed in other work by other artists which really did not make sense. The other work was good on it's own and worthy of being presented but I did not see the relevence of WWI and WWII photographs of soldiers or other war scenes being included. Yes, Norman Rockwell did many covers for The Saturday Evening Post of soldiers during war time but how did a W. Eugene Smith GI picture get included and others like it? It seemed like they were looking for fillers to make the show space bigger.

But it was still a good day and my Family Membership got us into everything for free and a discount on parking in the deck attached.

A Fantastic Museum with Something for Everyone

By volcanogirl |

We've been MFAH members for years and always enjoy the rotating exhibits at the museum. We recently went for the Hockney/Van Gogh exhibit and really enjoyed it. Love Hockney's big exuberant nature paintings with his bold graphic strokes and vibrant colors - viewing them is like walking through an enchanted forest. The show is perfectly titled The Joy of Nature. Van Gogh's paintings by contrast seem very subdued, but you can see how they served as inspiration for Hockney. There are several other nice exhibits coming this year - everything from O'Keeffe to Monet and Matisse. I'd recommend getting a museum membership as individual exhibits can be pricey. While you're there, don't miss James Turrell's beautiful light tunnel that connects two of the buildings and the outdoor sculpture garden that has Kapoor's Cloud Column. There's a brand new museum building this year and two new restaurants. Wonderful to see this gorgeous museum continuing to expand. Admission to the general museum is free on Thursdays. Best parking is in the parking garage to the left of the original MFAH building. There's something for everyone here, and we really look forward to going back.

First time visitor

By Alicia N |

We visited the museum on July 4th. The William Forsythe exhibit was really amazing, but other than that I was not super impressed. The security guard at the door was extremely rude when we attempted to enter less than 5 minutes before 10am. Nobody seems to provide any guidance for the first time visitor. A couple people I did ask almost seemed stunned that I was asking such questions. I feel we got a little jipped b/c we wandered around aimlessly not quite sure what all the place entailed. Doubt I will go back any time soon. It seems the more negative reviews on here mention a lot of the same things. Hopefully the museum will read and perhaps consider some re-training of staff.

Nice Combination of Permanent and Temporary Exhibits

By Delnor N |

The museum has nice permanent exhibits with great “visiting” exhibits. A season pass pays for itself quickly after only a couple of visits.

Loved it

By Evelyn V |

Wonderful exhibits! Fascinating international sculptures/figures. My favorite were the African and Japanese exhibits. It is a large museum with two buildings so we did not get to see everything.

Many exceptional exhibits

By Noreen S |

Enjoyed being a member and attend as often as possible. First rate exhibits including the current Van Gogh's being featured. Enjoy the movie programs and special programs put on by the Kinder Institute.

Fine museum

By Lingang |

It is located near the Hermann park, and rice University, it is a large museum but not as large as metro of NYC. It has good collection but not too many as NYC has, so you can walk through most of collection in few hours, if you only slop in your favorite pieces.

Free Thursday

By Jill L |

Beautiful exhibits and paintings. Very friendly staff. Helpful front desk associates. Coat check was helpful and appreciated.

A premier location for all things art

By Weary Travellery |

The Museum of Fine Art is truly an art museum, where "art" can mean any number of things, from statues to paintings to mobiles and everything in between.

We liked the way the museum was organized, in various time periods and with types of art grouped together. That way, if inlaid enamelware is your thing, for instance, you didn't have to wander all over the place to get your fill. All of the paintings are well displayed and illuminated for good viewing from any angle or distance. The special exhibits, which rotate, should not be missed.

Our only complaint is that there need to be more benches for those of us whose backs tend to start giving out after three or four hours of walking on hard floors.

A real gift to our city with consistent top exhibits

By suzieq |

There are so many great exhibits there. It's handicapped friendly and audio available for most shows.

You're sure to find something you love

By abroadwithashley |

An El Anatsui on display? Yes, please! This museum was far better than anticipated. I suppose we could have guessed that before arriving, but we’ve been to museums all around the world and this certainly holds its own in the group of top-class museums.

Impressionist Exhibit

By RWG2020 |

We are members of the MFAH and attend frequently. We went to the Bertha Morisot, Monet to Picasso, and Norman Rockwell exhibitions this weekend and each was wonderfully hung and informative. The exhibits were not overcrowded and easy to explore.

Put this museum at the top of your Houston visit.

By Liz Aulsebrook |

We only had one afternoon here & must return. Lunch in the cafe was outstanding: fresh food, great menu, delicious, lovely setting & great staff. Our tour guide was Ms Everett and she was absolutely brilliant - this was the best museum tour of our lives & we have visited many museums in the US & Europe. The gift shop was fabulous, beautiful gifts, also old silk kimono remade into hapi coats or jackets. I could happily return to Houston, get a nearby hotel & spend days at this museum.

We Joined!

By Jane S |

We came (150 miles) for the Van Gogh, but we joined because with 4 granddaughters, it pays for itself. They (middle schoolers) really enjoyed the interactive installation!

MFAF Gauguin Exhibit & Le Jardinière

By MCM |

The museum is beautiful and big! The staff is super friendly and helpful. The Gauguin exhibit is a must see!! Le Jardinière is one of the best museum restaurants in the US...walking it off at MFAF is a pleasure.

Nice Variety of Art

By KimK971 |

Really enjoyed visiting the museum a couple of months ago. There was a wide variety of art to view from old to neat to quite interesting and I even got to see a Picasso (which surprised me)! The only negative I really have is that the layout is really screwy and it's hard to navigate because of this.

Beautiful Museum, Lovely Cafe, Monet to Picasso and Berthe Morisot .... INCREDIBLE!

By Sheryl M |

My husband and I were in Houston for two nights, primarily for the Andrea Bocelli concert. A friend told us about the Monet to Picasso and Berthe Morisot exhibit, so we booked tickets online before flying out of OKC. While at the museum, we ate lunch at the Cafe, saw the impressionistic collection, a fraction of the museum's permanent collection, did some Christmas shopping in the museum's gift shop, and got to hear a local youth orchestra performing Christmas selections in the lobby area of the museum. What a beautifully done place. We would love to return!

Van Gogh Exhibit

By GeneralShamu |

We went for the Van Gogh/Hockney temporary exhibit they have. It was absolutely excellent. Bottled water is allowed but if you bring a bag you must wear it around the front side.

World Class

By asoitgo |

When exploring a new city, museums are always my first stop. The Museum of Fine Arts-Houston did not disappoint. There were simply too many galleries to adequately enjoy in one day. I was bowled over by the options. In their lovely cafe, I saw fliers for an upcoming evening with legendary Houston rapper Bun B. That tells me that the museum is in tune with its city. They are cutting edge even in the creation of roles like Interpretation Specialist. That is an avenue of the arts that is just burgeoning and they use them to connect the art to the wider community, at large. There was a mesmerizing installation with hundreds of pendulums swinging. Guards watched as visitors of all ages cris-crossed the marble floors, dodging the swaying weights. Absolutely stunning. A trip to Houston would not be complete with a visit.

The. Current Impressionist Exhibit is eorth a vizit

By Sharon M |

A very nice musrum. It the. current exhibit is worth a visit. The *included audio tour is simple but extensive

World class museum not to be missed

By IAHGVA |

World class museum with terrific temporary exhibitions, not to be missed by any visitor and surely by all Houstonians at least one or twice a year. Park in the new parking to enjoy the new Anish Kapoor sculpture and the Noguchi sculpture garden

Art, yes

By Kristin M |

If you are looking for art, you will definitely find it here. I appreciate all art, but I'd be lying if I said I love it all. What's great about this museum is there's something for everyone. Keep an eye out for the traveling exhibits, which have been my favorite experiences. They can get crowded, especially when you enter on the heels of a group of 20 visitors in matching t-shirts, armed with cameras and their own interpreter. You skip a couple things and navigate around that mess; that's how you handle that.
Obviously, there's a well-stocked gift shop for those who truly believe they will care about such objects 24 hours from then, or that someone else will value that object just because it came from an art museum. The bathrooms are clean. The downstairs cafe has food that is generally decent.
Remember to get your parking exit ticket from the kiosk before you leave, or you'll be that person--the one everyone silently curses because you're blocking the exit as you blame the machine for your ineptitude. Knowing which way you need to turn when you exit is also ideal.
In summary, go, see art, don't be an idiot.

Mixed bag

By N0rmalee |

We really enjoyed part of this; however, there’s an entire building filled with Cy Twombly’s work, which is just a bunch of doodles and scribbles like a person would do as they were talking on the phone or on hold or something. Guess we are not sophisticated or cultural enough to “get it” but we were totally unimpressed. Good for him that he apparently got lots of money and acclaim for this crap but really? Some of the works are really large, maybe paid by the foot? Lots of art and interesting sculptures to see in the other building. Would recommend skipping the CT building altogether. Really friendly and nice staff there and masks required.

Van Gogh Exhibit Exceptional

By lauraduggan2015 |

We just visited the very lovely Museum of Fine Arts in the museum district in central Houston to see the very outstanding and exceptionally curated Van Gogh exhibit. The exhibit tracks his work and relationships in chronological order presenting works from notable museums and private collections, a few even local. We took the audio guides and easily listened to great commentary about a number of pieces as we walked room to room. It took approximately 3 hours to see the works, read the postings and listen to the audio guide commentary. It was thrilling to see this very large collection. At the end of the exhibit, there was a well stocked gift shop dedicated solely to Van Gogh with many items shipped from Amsterdam. At the very end, there is a fantastic interactive exhibit where one can place themselves in some of the paintings, sketch some of the items he painted, do a self portrait or manipulate items in a scene. Adults and children alike were enjoying this experience. When you go there is a parking garage onsite and a tunnel that connects to the building with the exhibit. Tickets were $30 and parking for 4 hours was $10. Exhibit runs until the last week in June. Well worth seeing!

Explore, explore, explore

By restrapo |

Art that matters. Several mediums on display and several regions of the world covered. Yes, the old masters are there but so are modern, contemporary pieces. I find starting at top floors of museums and working down an exciting way to explore. My visit started on third floor of the Kinder Building (note - there are at least three buildings that make up the museum with underground tunnels connecting the buildings). Exhibits are thoughtful, grouped in logical ways and thought provoking pieces can be found in every nook and cranny (e.g., by the restrooms) of the museum

Quite a collection!

By kaufmansn |

We went for the Van Gogh show - which was good, but loved the permanent collection! This was my first time to go the building across the street and wander through the global collection.. I was so glad I did!

Great collection

By WingWingOne |

At a very moderate entrance price you can stroll around here for 2-3 hours
Nice collection of paintings and modern art
The temporary collections while i was there were great.
I liked the set up and the space
Certainly a must visit if you want a good overview of artists through the ages.

Nice art museum

By saltacity |

We came to visit the Museum on a rainy day and were pleasantly surprised. At first it is a bit confusing to find the entrances as it consists of several connected buildings. The collection on display are very well curated and you should spend at least 2h to get a good overview. Highly recommendable museum – go and see it.

One of the better art museums but awful hours and expensive admission

By 80237travel |

The Houston Museum of Fine Arts is one of the better big-city art museums.

I always enjoy a visit.

Unfortunately, the hours are horrible unless you can visit Thursday and Friday when the museum stays open to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday hours are awful and the museum is closed Monday and Tuesday. The museum should be open 10 am to 7 pm Sunday-Thursday and 10 am to 10 pm Friday-Saturday.

Admission is expensive and is only good for that day. So if you visit at 4 pm on a Wednesday you can't return Thursday morning with the same ticket.

You also don't get a discount at the restaurant for having purchased a museum ticket.

Every picture tells a story

By Ed H |

If pictures tell stories This is one big library walls full of stories. There’s modern, I could paint that, art. Old masters, Monet give me your Monet and others, much much more. A great place to go to cool off from Houston heat or to get out of the rain. I’ve been many times and always buy art glasses and postcards from the shop. There’s a tunnel that changes color. I like it best when it is red.

A Major American Museum

By Larry Deutsch |

Parking directions, on the website, are problematic. However, once inside the multiple buildings of this International quality Museum, the experience is over the top. Although the Art Institute of Chicago mounted a far better Van Gogh installation several years ago, this Van Gogh show was adequately curated for the artwork it included. The real highlights of this Museum are its permanent collections of both Contemporary and Period art. They have outstanding collections of both. The sculpture Gardens could be its own destination. Well worth a trip to Houston for this Museum. I will definitely return to spend even more time perusing its collections.

Van Gogh Exhibit was great

By Daniel L |

Find some time and go see the Van Gogh exhibit, you will not be disapointed. They also have an interactive children's Van Gogh exhibit that was as much fun for the adults as the children.

Gorgeous and inspiring

By Marina M |

We went during the Van Gogh exhibit and it was just amazing. Very well organized and also a ton of other floors and exhibits to explore. Don’t bother going to the cafe, however, it was not worth the wait.

Van Gogh Exhibition was Fantastic!

By rickg882 |

My wife and I are very big fans of Vincent Van Gogh (as are millions of others) so when we noticed the Museum's special exhibition featuring Van Gogh's life in drawings and paintings, we had to go. Boy are we glad we did. The exhibit was spectacular featuring many drawings and paintings from the Krollor-Muller Museum in Otterloo, Netherlands, as well as some paintings from other museums and private collections. We paid extra to skip the lines, but we went on a Wednesday afternoon and there were no lines and no crowds so it worked out great. What an opportunity to see Van Gogh's works that have never been shown in the US before. The museum had a great audio guide that helped you learn more about the paintings as well as Van Gogh's short artistic and traumatic life. He only painted for ten years and died at 37. What a loss!

Nice museum, parking was not easy to find

By Dr Pepper Girl |

Spent the afternoon at the MFAH. Museum has a wide variety of art from different areas, styles and time periods. The staff was very kind and helpful. Directions for parking was non existent and the garage is below ground and back off the road so easy to miss. I suggest to figure out parking before you go. (FYI put in MFAH parking garage in maps not just the museum.)

One of the most interesting in the world, really

By noledba |

Maybe not the most valuable or rarest art. But the mix artifacts in with the art and that makes it really interesting. We've traveled the world and seen the Louvre. Prado, Met and many other famous art museums. But this one just might have been the most fun.

Delightful

By 237yolandaa |

If you want to spend quality time with friends or family a trip to MFAH is a good place to go. Their exhibits are always well displayed and with the use of the audio guide very informative. The price of admission is well worth it.

Very Interesting....

By Steve W |

This is a great Museum. If you like Art, you'll enjoy going here. The atmosphere is pleasant as you walk around and observe the various Art throughout the Museum. We'll worth seeing.

By Anjana |

It's a great place to visit if you have a day free. I would recommend going if you have at least a few hours to spend because there is a lot to see. Especially nice if you have to spend some time alone :)

By Kristyn M |

So incredibly disappointed in this latest trip to the museum. My mother took me and my kids to the Escher exhibit today. While the exhibit itself was quite amazing, the museum staff completely destroyed the experience for us. First, the "security" folks were following my kids (13 & 14) around like they were art thieves while ignoring the old women putting their hands all over the pictures. They also ignored the man listening to his phone at full volume. My kids are very well behaved and were there to enjoy the exhibit.

Second, there was an exhibit that was being renovated by the Escher exhibit. They had a cherry picker going up into the ceiling. While moving it emitted this obnoxiously loud squeal which went on for at least 30 mins. People were covering their ears and several folks, my mother included, complained. We were given a refund for the exhibit but as we passed the "construction" my mother mentioned it would be nice if this was done after hours. The staff there rolled their eyes and laughed at her. Great customer service. So glad I didn't renew my membership. I doubt we'll be going back any time soon.

free Thursday

I am not a super fan of art but there are so many interesting objects inside that is impossible to get bored.Every Thursday it is free

Out of this world!

By Abigail |

I truly enjoyed my time here at the museum. The arrangement and flow of the exhibits were fantastic, even the way they were displayed. Overall great collections and I would say it is a must see if you decide to visit Houston.

It is almost like a day's work if you truly want to enjoy it and see everything they had to offer, and they have a very popular restaurant known for their Michelin star quality and café if you get hungry or want a break while touring.

very nice art museum!

By luna c |

an amazing art museum, especially with its recent modern art addition. there is a wide variety of art styles, ranging from BCE, to CE, to today. and all different cultures

the museum I would estimate would take the whole day to see, there really is a lot to it.

the seasonal instillations are nice, but quite frankly overpriced!

for the budget friendly visitors, the entry is FREE ON THURSDAYS!

Always fantastic exhibits and movies. A real gem on Houston

By Michael T |

When traveling though Houston if you have time the MFA is not to be missed, there will be an exhibit that you will enjoy, some popular exhibits require an advance ticket.
And don't forget to check the movie schedule - a hidden gem of Houston showing current to historical and important films including a few film fests throughout the year.

Norman Rockwell exhibit

By Keelmarm |

So unbelievable. Brought back memories of waiting for the newest Saturday Evening Post to arrive. Couldn’t get enough.

Just Wow

By Rebeca A |

The paintings are breathtaking, they have fine works by very famous painters and you might need more than a day to explore it completely.

Don’t go over weekend

By 136belinda |

We had to wait very long in various queues to get in and see all exhibits, but once you are walking it’s great to see the big variety of exhibitions. We were also very privileged to see the beautiful exhibition of Vincent van Gogh. Wow!

The museum is spread over many buildings connected by tunnels with interesting artworks designed specifically for these spaces. Plan on many hours for a comprehensive visit.

No Words Can Describe It!

By Boris E |

Museum of Fine Arts in Houston allowed us to truly enjoy art in its finest form. I could have just spent an entire day in just one of the three buildings that host the classical art period. I just felt in love with all the paintings and sculptures in this building. Even though the other buildings represent different types of modern art, I really did not connect well with them and wished I could have dedicated more time to the classical art period. If you are visiting for the first time Houston, and wanting to see different touristic attractions, please make sure that you purchase the City Pass. It will save you a lot of money, if you are visiting several attractions during your stay. Overall, a great place to visit during a rainy or cold day.

MFAH: Gordon Parks Stokely Carmichael and Black Power Exhibit 11/2022

MFAH curates amazing cultural displays and artifacts. You can literally spend all day there.

November 2022, I enjoyed a phenomenal exhibit which highlighted the iconic Gordon Parks, composer, author, first Black photographer at Life Magazine, film director of 1971 Shaft, US documentary photojournalist during the 1940s-1970s- issues of civil rights, African Americans, poverty, and in glamour photography.
The Gordon Parks Foundation featured magazines, videos, and black and white pictures throughout the collection of Stokely Carmichael, in Lourdes County, Alabama intent on registering 85% Black unregistered voters. Parks was contracted by Life magazine to document the 25 year old newly elected chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee(SNCC). “He was cast by the media as a figure of racial violence- a distortion of his character and his message.”

There is a museum gift shop, paid parking garage, and maps available during your visit. Check the website for additional details.

Excellent - plus suggestion

By baywanderer |

There is far too much to take in during a single day. The Glassell collection of gold from Peru, Africa and Indonesia is a world class - no other museum in the United States has a collection of such quality.

The Museum has two annexes -Buffalo Bayou Gardens and Rienzi. They are located in mansions in wealthy areas of Houston. The homes are available by tour only and contain excellent collections of decorative arts. Both are worth a visit.

Makes learning fun

By georgib150 |

What a great museum. The staff there highly recommended the energy exhibit on the 4th floor. Clearly Houston is 75% about oil so the comapnis that contributed to this exhbit were well known names in the fossil fuel ( and some other ) energy industries. My only regret was spending too much time at the energy exhibit and we kind of got saturated with toom much knowledge after a while. The butterfly exhibit was delightful as well. Great for kids, seniors and everyone else.

Huge amount of European Art

By James M |

I loved roaming the many galleries of European art, from the Medieval to contemporary. I was also amazed at the amount of East Asian, Indian, and Islamic art they had as well. This might be a two day trip though, it's easy to get "visual fatigue" in a place like this.

Monet to Picasso

By Larry W |

It's hard to go wrong with a very nice fine arts museum. The private collection included works from Monet, Morisot, Degas, Van Gogh, and Picasso. Feet weary, we only made it for three hours. Lots to do here, but you need multiple days to accomplish it. Entrance fee to include the private collection was $23.

Never tire

By Ed H |

We never tired of visiting here. The place to go when its 110 outside. Always something new to find. Their special exhibitions are great. I love the shop too

Great museum!

By Dorothy M |

I highly recommend the MFAH. The exhibits are top notch. I especially like their photography exhibits. Recently they curated an exhibit by Sally Mann which was awesome. Photographer Sally Mann explores what it means to be Southern. For more than 40 years, Mann (born 1951) has made experimental, hauntingly beautiful photographs that address overarching themes of existence: memory, desire, death, and the bonds of family. I had the privilege of seeing Sally Mann when she gave a presentation about 15 years ago. Truly great photographer. This is but one of many exhibits I have enjoyed at the MFAH.

Great Show, Great Gallery

By Liam R |

My girlfriend and I were stuck in Houston for two nights cause of a flight cancellation and heard about the Van Gogh exhibit starting that day. We couldn't have been more impressed, the gallery did a great job of leading the viewer through the life of the artist, and really gave you a good sense of his life and work. The rest of the museum was equally impressive.

Great museum to visit

By jua c |

While vacationing in Houston ai decided to go to the museum of fine arts, love the experience! Beautifully art pieces, easy to walk and neoyorquino!

Beautiful art

By Bart Birdsall |

The museum had many works by great artists, some Egyptian works, and a special Norman Rockwell exhibit when I went. I wanted to spend more time in the museum but had to attend an event.

Always a pleasure visiting here

By yp17 |

The premiere museum in Houston, the new addition is accessible by the colorful tunnel under Bissonnet. 3rd floor modern, 2nd floor excellent classical paintings.

Fine Museum with one very dangerous feature

By DAGTucson |

The MFA is a fine museum with a variety of artwork and sculpture to satisfy anyone’s taste. The collections are well-organized and the signage for individual paintings and other art objects is almost uniformly excellent. The food served at the cafeteria is very good by museum standards. All in all this is a great way to spend a day or more in Houston. The only downside is a major safety flaw. The two museum buildings are connected by an underground tunnel. The tunnel is dark. Patrons must use a raised walkway about 10 feet wide, also very dark. There is a substantial risk if you don’t pay close attention of falling offthe walkway, which has no railings, to the tunnel floor about 8 inches below. This is not a theoretical problem; we saw a woman near us trip and fall off the walkway and land on her face! The system is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen but in the meantime be very careful in the tunnel and watch any accompanying children carefully.

Visited the Van Gogh exhibit

By Lori G |

Wonderful museum. We really enjoyed the opportunity to see a lot of Van Gogh's original works. It was quite crowded and we had to wait to see the art work up close but it was worth it. Tour the rest of the museum and enjoy such a wide variety of amazing artwork.

Went for Sally, Enjoyed Vincent too

By Mila G |

I traveled to Houston to see the Sally Mann exhibit. Lucky for me, it was also the Vincent Van Gogh exhibit. I went on a Sunday, got there at opening and there were lines. I bought my ticket online so that maybe helped. To be honest, they both moved pretty quickly. I learned after going through the entirety of the main building that the Sally Mann exhibit was across the street...in a different building. IDK - maybe make this clearer or maybe it was and I don't understand directions.

Anyway, the museum is nice, pretty well laid out - did have to do a few U-turns but spent about 1.5-2 hours total.

Surprise cultural venue in Texan city

By marconi2019 |

For a city in a state – which does not exactly stand out for the issue – this museum is surprising.
They have masters of American Impressionism such as Pollock, Rothko, Motherwell and universal art of all times. Ridden on a higher level, for culture lovers who want to get away from rodeos, Tex-Mex or cowboys, this place won’t disappoint them.

Free all day on Thursdays

By mrjonesii |

This museum is huge, unique with lots of surprises, unlike any art museum I’ve been to. Admission is free on Thursdays. Parking only $10 for 4 hrs! Other museums are nearby and free on Thursdays as well but check the times of each museum. This is near Herman Park but I wouldn’t suggest to walk it. You can literally spend the whole day in this area.

Museum of fine arts

By Lindsay H |

Went here by chance as the natural history and science museum was closed for the day. Lovely place. Had some heat paintings but also exhibits from Italian furniture to Egyptian, Japanese, Indonesian exhibits. WEL worth a few hours of your time

Several buildings with art from all the ages from around the world

By Dianne W |

We wanted to visit this trip for some unusual displays including the William Forsythe Choreographic Objects that move in all directions as you walk through the maze; the Icon of Fashion through Photography and the Ragner Kjartansson The Visitor. There was also a crazy screen that was like a circus hall of mirrors at the entrance. There is always something different on display each month which is why we are members.

Nice exhibits

By Susanjcoleman |

Very nice. I love how spacious everything was. Unlike most museums, this museum has a variety of multiple genres of art. Worth the visit.

Norman Rockwell

By Donna Jackson |

Fabulous exhibit...well done...so interesting..a must see if possible
Information about his work for which I was unaware

World class museum: not to miss

By BeLaZe |

This is a great museum. It is large enough that even browsing through the entire museum may be too much for a day. And just browsing I found quite impossible: so many pieces of art stopped us midstep and invited us for exploration, even in rooms that exhibit styles or eras that I am not particularly attracted to. And how many styles and eras were represented!
The legends and descriptions of the artifacts were very informative, arguably the best I have ever seen in any museum: they were concise, yet managed to include both historical context and fascinating factoids.
Also, the buildings and connecting tunnels are impressive, parking is easy (and acceptably priced) and the staff was helpful.

Excellent museum

By Ottawatraveller547 |

We really enjoyed our visit to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Since we only had limited time we concentrated our visit mainly to the Audrey Jones Beck building. There we saw some beautiful exhibits and paintings. This include some art from Picasso, Monet, Renoir among others. If you have time you can explore the musuem's website to see what is on exhibit and plan your visit around that. The tunnel joining the Audrey Jones Beck building to the Caroline Wiess Law Building is worth seeing. We passed through it a number of times.
We enjoyed a light lunch in the museum's cafe before heading out to see some other parts of Houston's museum district.
We found the museum to be well layed out and the staff on duty was approachable and helpful.

Great collection

By Rocio Luper |

The permanent exhibits are great, despise the overwhelming security guards that ruined the experience by following us allover the place because we have kids with us and where less patrons to follow around.

Beautiful and Lovely

By Mindy Lewis |

This was the perfect thing to do for a couple that wanted to spend time together and stroll around. Being surrounded by beauty and inspired by the great artist that are show here. It was just a lovely day.

interesting place

By Don H |

Have seen a number of major European galleries. The one in Houston is easily comparable to some of the middle range galleries. Lots of interesting things to see.

Visited Museum of Fine Arts to see the Rockwell American Freedom Exhibition

By Carole S |

What an opportunity this was to see the layout of the building and to enjoy the various galleries. The Rockwell Exhibition showing of the Four Freedoms was incredible. There was a lot of his art some of which I had never seen before. It covered his early years and his techniques. There were other paintings by various illustrators and the time period covered the Vietnam era and the moon walk. I would love to go back and spend more time seeing their other collections.

I’m not a connoisseur of fine art and I still loved it!

By Amy S |

We had time to kill before heading to the airport and my husband is an artist so we spend a few hours here.

Fist of all, this part of Houston is gorgeous! Huge old homes, beautiful green areas and wonderful statues and fountains. It puts you in the mood to look at beautiful pieces of art work.

I don’t know a lot about art. I’m one of those people who either likes it or doesn’t. I don’t know anything about technique or anything but I fell in love with a pairing they had on display!

The museum is large and airy. There’s room for you to stand back and admire the work. Or up close. Whatever. Multiple types of paintings and a little bit of pottery and Egyptian artifacts.

They have 2 buildings but one didn’t have much in it. I believe they are building a new home for the museum right next door.

Lots of school field trips going on and I enjoyed overhearing the docents talk to the kids about the art work. (I may have learned a few things!)

A Great Art Museum

By CJTravelerTexas |

It had been two years since we last visited the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and in June we decided to return to see the Monet to Matisse: Impressionism to Modernism special exhibit in the Beck Building and the Fayez S. Sarofim Three Centuries of American Art collection in the Law Building. In addition, we wanted to visit the new Kinder Building. And while at the museum, we visited a number of works of art that are part of the permanent collection, of which we never grow tired. The “rainbow” tunnel between the Law and Kinder buildings is worth experiencing. The MFAH is an exceptional museum and it speaks well of its host city.

Went for Van Gogh but stayed for permanent collection

By RobLaw47 |

Our light was canceled so we made good use of the extra few hours. The Van Gogh show was quite good, but I had seen the art in Holland. We left too little time for the excellent permanent collection. Especially for a 20th Century collection (not the art, WHEN the museum was formed), it is excellent. We know Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia - 2nd tier museums, below the National Gallery, Art Institute and the Met. This one is right up there in the 2nd tier.

Loved the interactive connections for Van Gogh

By Valerie S |

Enlargements made impression- floor to ceiling 15-20 ft. Vivid moving parts of 3D versions memorable

Underwhelming Museum

By April |

The museum felt a bit underwhelming and on the dull side. I've been to several museum of fine arts and this one is just average. I went through it fairly fast and discovered that the most interesting exhibits to me were special exhibits that you needed to pay extra for.

Van Gogh exhibit

By ColleenfromTx |

We really enjoyed the Van Gogh exhibit. There was a line to get in- we waited about an hour- but its to be expected on a sunday afternoon. Parking was easy with a tunnel from the garage on Binz to the museum.
Nice attendants checking on people in line and available for questions. World class exhibit- Thank you MFAH!

Amazing exabits, but we were stalked through the museum.

By gabrielle b |

We had a wonderful time exploring the museums many different exabits. There were so many different things to look at. The staff followed us like hawks though. it made it very hard to enjoy it when we were being staired at so aggressively. When I would look up at them they were dead strait watching my family. We had small children who were sitting on the benches looking around, We did not allow them to run or touch they were not loud, but it seemed everywhere we went they were following us and watching us even though there were many other people.
besides this we really enjoyed out stay. The café had very good food!

Refreshing adventure for the introverts

By Yok |

Honestly, we could spend all day reading the history of each painting. Very educational. It allows us to turn back in time and history and relive it. I like that the museum offers various sections of art genres. Love the weird cool stuff haha.

Good art exhibit

By Penny C |

It is always a great place to visit. I wanted to see the Armand Hammer exhibit with art from Rembrandt to Van Gogh. I would have liked a video discussing the exhibit.

amazing

By cp10pin |

We went to Norman Rockwell exhibit. was amazing and enjoyed the history lesson from early days, thru wars and peace.

Houston’s Crown Jewel

By rushh2017 |

All 3 buildings have impressive collections. This museum has everything from impressionist paintings to daggers and swords from the Islamic world. Very cool underground tunnels connect all 3 buildings. Underground parking garages provide direct access to museum buildings. Set aside at least 4 hours to appreciate the many galleries.

Awesome exhibit

By vivavino |

I went to Houston specifically to see this exhibit, and it was worth the entire trip.
Beautifully done, and paintings I had not seen before, so fantastic.

OK experience

By Debbie |

Part of the museum was closed to visitors, so admission was free on the day we went. Would have been a better experience if the other part was open. Nice cafe for lunch.

Must see for art lovers in Houston

By Moli409 |

We visit the FMAH at least once a month: even if the current exhibit is not too interesting to us, we visit the permanent exhibits. After having trouble parking and even entering the museum last month during the Van Gogh exhibit (as members!) we will now get tickets on-line before we visit (and we had already seen the Van Gogh exhibit).

A Gorgeous Museum Spread Across Three Large Buildings

By volcanogirl |

The MFAH is an excellent museum with something for everyone. It's spread across three large buildings and even the tunnel systems connecting the buildings incorporate art. Don't miss seeing James Turrell's The Light Inside and the fun color tunnel by Cruz-Diez. We're museum members so we're here regularly and enjoy seeing both the permanent collections and the ever rotating exhibits. For this visit, they had the Obama portraits on display. They're unlike any traditional portraits we've ever seen. No oval office, American flag, not even a tie on Obama. His portrait has him sitting in front of a wall of vines and flowers. I enjoyed reading about all of the elements that the artist incorporated. Each flower has symbolism - the African blue lily for his Kenyan heritage, white jasmine for his childhood in Hawaii, chrysanthemums representing the time he spent in Chicago. His portrait is really beautiful and very lifelike with great attention to detail, especially in the hands. The portrait of Mrs. Obama is in stark contrast, a plain muted blue background, not much attention to detail, other than her beautiful dress, and doesn't seem to resemble her. The description said that this particular artist creates archetypes rather than more lifelike portraits that resemble the subjects she's painting. An interesting take on portraiture, we enjoyed seeing them. We also enjoyed strolling around the outdoor sculpture garden across the street from the museum. Don't miss seeing the shiny Cloud Column by Kapoor. Great spot to take photos. You can grab lunch at the little cafe by the sculpture garden. Parking is available for a fee in the MFAH parking garage, and general admission to the museum is free on Thursdays. You could easily spend an entire day here and not see everything this beautiful museum has to offer.

Great exhibit and Museum

By Saundra |

The Van Gogh exhibit was very well organized and easy to follow. It ran chronologically from the beginning of his art works to the end. It also provided audio assistance if you wanted at no extra charge beyond the initial exhibit fee.

Excellent Collection

By Caroline S |

Great spot to spend 3 hours on a Sunday afternoon hiding from Houston rain. Collect is excellent - plenty of benches scattered through the galleries.

Take your time.

By karenmck1964 |

Do not rush. Sit down and appreciate the work in front of you. Great museum and amazing collections.

An Impressive Museum Spread Across Three Large Buildings

By volcanogirl |

We're museum members and came to see the exhibit "Vertigo of Color" showcasing the art of Matisse and Derain as they explored the genre of Fauvism. The paintings in the exhibit are beautiful, mostly set in a small French seaside town where the artists spent their summer. Lots of bold strokes and vivid, saturated colors like bright oranges, hot pinks, purples, and turquoise. Apparently this was considered quite daring back in the day. Fauvism was new to me, so I appreciated learning about it. My favorite was Matisse's Open Window that focuses on a view of sailboats through an open window. I also loved "Woman with a Shawl" that was painted by Derain and features Matisse's wife as the model. The museum itself is fantastic and spread across three large buildings connected by a tunnel system. It's free on Thursdays if you want to just go in and explore. Don't miss James Turrell's light tunnel called "The Light Inside" as you pass from one building to another. The permanent collection is impressive - European art, Asian art, Islamic art, African art - there's really something for everyone. We parked in the parking garage attached to the museum. I'd recommend plugging the address into your GPS because it's a bit hard to find. There's also an outdoor sculpture garden - don't miss the bean sculpture called "Cloud Column" - and a nice cafe where you can grab a bite to eat. For tourists or locals, this is a great place to explore and beat the summer heat.

Outstanding special exhibition and very interesting permanent collection

By Pamela J |

It was a great privilege to see the Berthe Morrissot show and the Private collection of mostly Impressionist works. The audio tour was excellent. This was the draw, but the permanent collection was also very well worth our time - and we come from an area with outstanding museum art collections.

Good Art museum

By Allen W |

Extensive collection with lots to offer. Every period of human history is well covered. Expansive but slightly confusing layout.

Amazing.

By FrancesDecatur |

We specifically came to Houston to see the Vincent VanGogh exhibit here. And, we were not disappointed. A really nice selection of Van Gogh. It was crowded, but that seemed to disperse as you went along. I am thrilled we went. After, that we did go visit American Paintings and a few other exhibits. An excellent museum.

Excellent Berthe Morisot retrospective

By Gabriel H |

Berthe Morisot is a less well known and (unfairly) less celebrated impressionist. Most museums, if they even have Morisots, they have only a handful. And yet, Morisot was not only a unique member of the group, with her own very characteristic style, but was also very prolific, creating dozens and dozens of works of art throughout her career. She also served as a muse and model for Edouard Manet, who was her main mentor. This exhibit is quite lovely and a treat for Houstonians and visitors alike. Beautifully displayed, nicely annotated, it conveys the history and major landmarks of Morisot's career as a muse, mother, wife and artist. The exhibit, paired with "Monet to Picasso" is very manageable, but will require at least a couple of hours to fully enjoy.

Well worth the trip

By MatthewMRyan84 |

Excellent fine arts collection. The portrait art really stands out as some of the best work in the museum.

AWESOME

By Linda J |

This is one of the best museums in America besides the museum in NYC. They display artifacts and paintings, etc from all cultures and masters. Love to go to all the special event displays as they are never a disappointment!

Very Fine Fine Arts Museum

By AuditMan001 |

We moved from Houston four years ago and returned for a visit last weekend. While there we visited the MFA and were reminded of just how nice a museum it is. World class. Lots of major artists presented. The layout is easy and the museum is just large enough to spend several hours and not be overwhelming. Highly recommended.

Wonderful museum

By Mark B |

Three separate buildings in the museum. There are two James Terrell’sIn the tunnels between the buildings, they are outstanding. We enjoyed the original building and the new building with mainly 20th century are the best. The middle buildingIs very interesting architecturally but when we were there did not have much art. They are Cafe’s were closed due to Covid. We had a very nice lunch at Zaza’s next-door.

World Class Museum

By EdinLakeview |

Just stopped to visit, and couldn’t believe there was a 500 piece M. C. Escher Exhibit. What an incredible collection and facility. There until Sept. 2022. Nice Cafe too.

By Scott |

Off the charts amazing museum. Showed up on free day unexpectedly. But it would have been worth the ticket price for sure. Enormous museum with a huge variety of art. Friendliest staff you'll find it any museum. Tunnels connecting three different museum buildings are also part of the museum.

When visiting Houston, and love art, plan half a day at least.

By efustok |

I enjoy coming here anytime I can. I had not been since last summer for the bamboo exhibit. Currently they have the William Forsythe exhibit, which is fantastic. My kids loved it, since you can immerse yourself in the art, it makes it exciting. We also enjoyed the 50th anniversary of the moon landing exhibit. The regular exhibits are always impressive, and enjoyable to see over and over. I especially love the Islamic arts rooms, quite lovely. The hall that connects the two buildings is fun to walk through as well. I had not been to the outdoor garden where it connects to the Glassell art school. If you have not been it’s lovely, the sculpture’s are extraordinary. Then you walk to the new section that has the reflective sculpture. Similar to the bean in Chicago, here it’s vertical. Behind it is the art school you can walk up to the roof garden, it’s a great view of the city. I’m loving the new additions to our vibrant city.

Van Gogh splendor

By ETame |

A very good display of Van Gogh art and history. Also dedicated to children but I loved it, you can sit in the room or dining of Van Gogh pictured in his art, and take a picture. Very original, worth to visit for any Van Gogh art lover, even if you have been to other museums like in Amsterdam.

Great museum. Great experience for entire family

By Nerfhammer |

Great way to spend a few hours. Reasonable admission. The permanent collection is great and varied. Plenty to keep adults and kids entertained. Events every weekend for kids. Easy access to parking near-by. Beautiful area with parks and other attractions within walking distance. This museum has amazing temporary exhibits (Van Gogh, Rockwell, etc.) --- always check the museum's calendar to see what is scheduled. Definitely worth the time.

Fine Arts Museum surrendering to identity politics

By Patrick V |

I was born and have lived in Houston all my life except for my University days, Very sad today to find that the Houston Fine Arts Museum has gone WOKE and into identity politics feeling the identity politics need to state WOKE opinion as fact re the museum art rather than letting each individual interpret the art for themselves or just enjoy it without the identity politics lecture.

In a room with the great artist Frederic Remington paintings the museum finds the need to interpret the paintings in a negative way implying racism and white supremacy. Ruined it for me. In the Myth of the West wall plaque, the Museum opines the following: "IN TRUTH, many images in this gallery, made for WHITE consumers, depicts romance rather than reality." That is an opinion and not needed. There is no "reality" balance re a mention of how the native Indians treated each other, their tribal warfare; and slavery of other captured tribal members. It is simply inserted to promote white guilt and white man bad narrative. Another painting's wall interpretation said basically not to believe your lying eyes and then goes on to explain why you should not enjoy it as you see or feel it because again it symbolizes white exploitation and the painting as you see it is all a lie. The mastery of the brush, light, colors, the paintings beauty etc are not what is important we are told, rather it is the lie. Can the Museum work any harder to spoil the art as art?

People are educated and smart enough to draw their own conclusions and enjoy the art for what it is without the Woke in your face identity politics beat down to tarnish the beauty of the art by condemning it.

I will not be back or support the museum with donations or memberships in the future. The Houston Fine Arts Museum like sports (no escape into just pure competition) and Hollywood (no escape into fantasy) has decided to be political and give us no chance to just relax and escape into the raw beauty of art w/o being lectured, talked down to or have the art interpreted for us. I was very saddened to see the woke plagues spoiling the art.

The message: You can like the art at first glance or emotionally, but we just want you to know that really it is bad because .....

Disappointing

By Bella C |

Considering cost of tickets for a special collection, we were very disappointed. Didn’t have many paintings by artist showcased at all. Overpriced gift shop, as well as cafe.

World class art museum

By tchmrl |

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) is slowly becoming a world class museum. The curators work hard to feature high quality exhibits you see in few museums, like the recent collection of Van Gogh's masterpieces. You can spend all day wandering the halls and outdoor sculpture garden. When you get hungry, grab a meal at the cafe. (I highly recommend the MFA salad!)

beautiful gold artifacts

By Lorna B. |

We visited here over Thanksgiving weekend, utilizing their adjacent parking garage (prorated charge, thankfully). We spent three solid hours here enjoying the various galleries. My favorite exhibits by far were the Africa and Indonesian Gold collections—a huge display of beautiful jewelry, decorative items, ritual pieces, etc. (I never knew those cultures had so much gold in their possession.) The collections of Asian art on display here were smaller than some we’ve seen at other museums, but the gold exhibits made up for that for me. Overall, there is a nice variety here. We had lunch in their spacious café and found the food to be tasty.

Always amazing

By CAM |

One of my favourite museums. When I visit Houston, I always go there. Well worth a visit as there is a lot to see. You can take your time or rush through.

Great special exhibits. Excellent film program.

By EHBTexas |

Van Gogh was an excellent exhibit. Tickets are not timed, so there can be crowds. Special Exhibits are rotated often. There is parking on site which is adequate except for special or high volume events. Nice cafe on site. The museum is 2 buildings. Closed Mondays.

If you have time, check out the Cullum sculpture garden and Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Column at the Glassell School of Art. You can climb on outdoors steps to the rooftop of the school, and catch free concerts on select summer Friday evenings on the plaza.

Nice museum

By Lacey |

The family and I enjoyed walking around the museum, even though we prefer more modern art. Thursday’s is free, so I would definitely recommend coming on a Thursday.

Van Gogh exhibition- awe inspiring

By Sara W |

This was a fantastic exhibition- the audio guide was really usefu.
Only down side was having to check our bags in - not told until after that we just needed to carry our very small bags instead of having them over our shoulders.
The sculptures in the sculpture park over the road are well worth a visit too.

Gotta support our Houston museum!

By Lolis2225 |

Went to the Van Gogh exhibit and it was amazing. So glad we went and were able to support our local museum. It’s a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. Their permanent exhibits are wonderful too, we try and go at least once a month. Highly recommend it.

Wonderful vast museums 3 hrs mininum

Once you find the parking, the museum is amazing!

The printed information was very helpful as were all the employees we encountered. The exhibits were beautifully curated and spaced. Multiple visits are needed to see everything. One unexpected courtesy was free access to small individual folding stools.

Beautiful Art with Lots of Interesting Info

By Katarina |

If you're into art museums, this one should definitely be on your list. It's organized well and has LOTS of different types for you to see.

Cute museum, go on the free admission

By xkaybee |

My friend and I went on the day where it was general admission for free and it was a nice experience! There were some specialty exhibits but the price was too high for us and not worth the money when you could still enjoy and spend about an hour and more in the museum for free.

Way better than expected

By Joseph A |

Ok! we were in the convention center and needed something to do in our free time. Found the MFA, and noted two special exhibits: Monet to Picasso and Norman Rockwell so we took the tram (4 blocks from our hotel) and it stopped just in front of the MFA. The Monet to Picasso was an outstanding surprise: some items we only saw before in books. Not only were the museum loans wonderful, there were 3 rooms full of exceptional paintings and sculptures from private collections. We especially appreciated the private pieces, as we feel unlikely to see them again. We then went to the museums regular European section and once again felt very pleased to have come there. Even without the special exhibits, we feel the museum is worth the trip and a few hours to enjoy the displays. We certainly plan to return at our next visit to Houston

Our favorite art museum in Texas

By Accrusion |

We aways enjoy our trips here (from Austin) every 1-2 years. Nice comprehensive collection AND interesting special exhibits. Good for most of a day.

don’t overlook convenient parking in the HMFA parking garage across street from Methodist Church

By Stephen K |

We were there for 2 great exhibits; Calder - Picasso and Incomparable Impressionism from Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Seeing the exhibits was worth the 4 hour drive from Corpus Christi. Because we have been going here for many years before the parking garage we always have to remind ourselves of the location / very convenient 2 blocks to the west across street from the Methodist church on Binz Street. The HMFA is always well organized and well curated.

Day at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston

By Ronnie Hoogenberg |

What an amazing museum, 64,000 works of art from ancient man to today's arts. A good six hours walking reading and admiring, would take a couple more days to really read all the information on offer, will need to be reasonably fit and able to stop and stand to take in the amazing art and information about it all. Plus don't take your own lunch as there is a great restaurant on site.
Would greatly recommend people who love all sorts of art and it's history to make sure you visit this museum whilst in Houston.

Great way to spend the afternoon

By Trina D |

We were only able to get through one of the buildings at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston as we arrived at 4 pm and the museum closed at 6 pm. My MIL and I had a free afternoon after a family wedding, so we decided to hightail it over to the museum for some culture. The museum is located in the arts district of Houston and occupies a few buildings. We were able to go through a few floors before heading back to our hotel. We saw some lovely 18th and 19th century pieces and checked out the gift shop on the way out. While our visit was short, I was impressed with the large galleries and plenty of seating available to visitors. Parking can be found underground and they do not validate. Pay on the way out from the elevators before exiting in your vehicle for a smoother experience.

Good museum

By robertml666 |

Good though limited collection. Good special exhibits, including Van Gogh which is why we went when in Houston.

Enjoyed The Exhibit, But Parking was Difficult

By volcanogirl |

We're museum members and enjoy the frequently rotating exhibits at the MFAH. For this visit, we came to see Floating World, an immersive exhibit blending light, sound, and fog. The museum itself is excellent with art spread across three expansive buildings. For some reason parking was really difficult on this day; they have parking garages, but they were all full, and we drove around for 45 minutes looking for a parking spot. Ultimately my husband just dropped me off so I could dash in and explore the exhibit. I did enjoy it but was disappointed that we couldn't enjoy it together. If you just want to visit the permanent collection, it's free to visitors on Thursdays. Museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. There's a cafe and a sculpture garden as well. Don't miss the fun light tunnels that connect the buildings.

very nice art

By rexhans |

this was our first stop on our museum day and we had to leave before seeing everything simply because there was so much to see. we did make it through the main building that houses lots of very nice european art among other things. being able to compare so much art from different time periods and geographic areas made this visit very enjoyable. next time we are here we will have to dedicate more than one day to museums for sure.

Art beauty for the mind and soul!

By Brenda Q |

Could not believe how large the museum of fine arts is and their wonderful exhibits. It’s 3 buildings of wonderful collections. So much to see and explore. We loved the extensive impressionist collection and the Latin American artwork. There is an indoor cafe with great pizza choices and desserts to keep you going. We spent 4 hours exploring and only made it through two buildings.

Good place to spend the day

By Erika L |

You will be able to vist three different museums with one ticket, i recommed to arrive early so you can have time to check all three, the museums are in different buildings but all three are connected thru underground tunnels. It has access for wheelchairs having wide aisles and elevators. The musueum for fine arts is the bigger one, I suggest to start with the other two as the fine arts may take you a lot of time.

Van Gogh!

By StLawrencelover |

Visited for the Van Gogh exhibit. Crowded as expected. First rooms are all reproductions as originals don’t leave Holland.

However, there are some truly stunning paintings and drawings. Definitely worth a visit.

I wandered through some of the museum. Unsurprisingly, the collection is uneven. Some great examples and some not so great.

Great museum in the beautiful museum district

By Jeanette M |

We spent mid day walking around the museum district. The museum specifically was great. Very well laid out with great variety of art. There were plenty of comfortable seats to take a rest and enjoy the art. This is two buildings that you can access from the inside in an underground tunnel that is light art.

A World Class Art Museum

By braveheart_73 |

An already great place, with the addition of the Kinder Building now truly world class. I was blown away by the attention to detail, the variety of art and the relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere. Can’t wait to go back.

Van Gogh

By Reno D |

Not sure why the first room of the exhibit contained reproductions. Who wants to see those? Otherwise, a very interesting show detailing the evolution of Van Gogh as an artist.

Don't Skip the Van Gogh Exhibit!

By rcs26 |

This exhibit was wonderful and I enjoyed every minute of it. The museum had many wonderful paintings, and at the end there is an incredible interactive display for adults and kids that is really special. As a visiting native New Yorker, I go to museums all the time, but the interactive room was unlike anything I have ever seen before. Phenomenal is all I can say!!!! Kudos to those who put this together! Imaginative and so much fun! A MUST SEE!!!

Two buildings, entry fee

By OZtraveller222 |

Two fairly small buildings make up this Museum. Surprisingly many paintings are by unidentified artists. Have never seen masterpieces on display before and the artist is unknown. Good variety of art but most artists mentioned were unknown to me. Perhaps they are American artists. The gift shop was good.

Great museum

By NemoTraveler |

The museum is located downtown Houston in the Museum District. Good parking options are available within a short walking distance.

We visited on a Thursday, where admission to the collections is free. The museum is situated in several buildings and the collections are substantial, so it is possible to spend several hours here.
We enjoyed our visit very much and would definitely recommend a visit here.

Nice new wing of museum

By CASECHI |

Great trip exploring the new wing of the fine arts museum. Worth a visit. A great space and loved the layout.

AN ECLECTIC COLLECTION

So much to see. Allow at least two hours, preferably longer, to take it all in. Admission fee is $19 for adults. Worth the price. I love museums.

Van Gogh is amazing!

If you haven’t done so already, go to MFA and see the Van Gogh exhibit. It’s fabulous! MFA is always a treat with their varied and interesting exhibits.

A Wonderful Place to Spend the Day

By volcanogirl |

We've been MFAH museum members for years and always enjoy their rotating exhibits. For this visit we saw Incomparable Impressionism and the M.C. Escher exhibit. Both were excellent. Enjoyed seeing all the Monet and Renoir paintings full of beautiful gardens, rosy-cheeked children, people dancing, and just enjoying life in general. M.C. Escher's art by contrast was mathematical, measured, brooding, and full of symmetry. Nice to see such variety. Museum signage could be improved a little bit. Adding temporary signs directing guests toward the exhibits would be really helpful. The museum has grown so much and is now spread across three large buildings. Parking is available for a fee in the MFAH parking garage. There's also a good indoor/outdoor cafe where you can enjoy lunch and a pretty sculpture garden across from the museum. This is a wonderful place to spend the day.

Van Gogh

By joereichman |

Wonderful museum
Visited Van Gogh exhibit with family
Beautiful architecture & great collection in addition to Van Gogh
A true “gem”

Impressionist exhibition

By scott r |

Mega museum with something for everyone. Ranks with the major big cty MFAs across the country. Extensive, impressive and FREE on Thursdays, with extended hours. I've been several times so concentrated on what intersts me most; you can easily spend 3+ hours. Clsong soon, the Impressionist exhibition was well worth the upcharge. Some real gems, though as always I could do without Mary Cassatt, lol. Never tire of Cezanne though. While not huge, this was an impressive island of relative solace amidst the genuinely sprawling museum complex (there's 3 main buildings, consult your maps) Free street parking is available with a short wak.

Execellent arts museum

By TravelproA |

made of three main building blocks that are close to each other, they have a supreme exhibition of 70000+ items! make sure you leave enough time to go through the entire museum, you probably need a whole day there!

Norman Rockwell Special Exhibit

By pjirishmom |

Great exhibit that included more than Norman Rockwell. It places his art in the historical perspective, including other artists’ works. The WPA photography is not to be missed.
The exhibit also shows some artwork from conception, through Rockwell’s process, to finished work.

A Beautiful, World Class Museum

By volcanogirl |

We've been members of the MFAH for years. They have a fantastic permanent collection that includes everything from ancient artifacts to Impressionist masters. There are some nice surprises as well; our favorite is the light tunnel by James Turrell that connects the museum's two main buildings. Don't miss it. We love the ever changing exhibitions - everything from fashion to photography, Georgia O'Keeffe to Norman Rockwell. There's a great gift shop, a cafe where you can grab lunch, and a nice outdoor sculpture garden. For non-members, admission is free on Thursdays. If you have a free day, this is a beautiful way to spend it.

Enjoyed Seeing Works by O'Keeffe, Calder, and Picasso

By volcanogirl |

The MFAH is a wonderful museum. We've been members for quite a while and always enjoy their rotating exhibits. For this trip, we enjoyed the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit - a few large colorful paintings that I loved and also some of her photography which I had never seen before and a Calder/Picasso exhibit that was quite good. Really interesting to see Picasso's series of bull drawings that go from very realistic to a state of abstraction and Calder's fun, whimsical mobiles. We're looking forward to coming back for the Impressionism exhibit. Just as an FYI, masks are required for museum entry. If you have several shows that interest you, I'd recommend purchasing a museum membership since the cost of individual shows can really add up. This is a great place to spend the day.

Worth the Visit

By Traveler |

You will need several hours to fully enjoy all the interesting culture of the Arts. Enjoyed it so much and the restaurant has delicious food as well. Highly recommend visiting here.

I was able to experience lots of Art material for a College Assignment. I had not visited this place since childhood.

Vincent Van Gogh: His Life in Art exhibit

By RoadVittles |

This exhibit just opened this weekend. It's a wonderful exhibit and a little different from other exhibits, in that his art is presented chronologically. Most people, including myself, do not realize that Van Gogh only painted for 10 years. Imagine what he could have done had he lived beyond the age of 37. The exhibit is opened through June 27th. Might want to wait a month to see it to let crowds lessen, but don't miss it!

Nice mixture of european and asian art

By AdriZaAst |

You will find here all the most famous european painters be it italian, french, english or flemish. The asian and african sections are also really nice.

Great art exhibits in Houston

By roj1281 |

Went to MFAH to see the MC Escher exhibit and was not disappointed. I really liked how the artwork was set up and presented. Beautiful pieces were chosen and it was a great time.

Go See Van Gogh

By mojomo |

See them while you can. An excellent Van Gogh exhibit featuring many earlier works and providing a timeline of how his technique changed and progressed over the years. Fascinating.

I was only familiar with Van Gogh’s later works. Most notably those featuring big, bold thick strokes of color.

You will see how he progressed from pencil drawings as he taught himself to draw from books and by copying other artists’ work.

He was painting even when he was hospitalized at different times in his life.

Your price of admission includes an audio tour that allows you to get more in depth information.

I am very near-sighted and with the dim lighting had a little bit of a hard time reading the descriptions, so this was very helpful. Available in English and Spanish.

We joined the museum at a very reasonable family rate. This will give us access to the Museum of Fine Arts. Free year-round general admission
Free or discounted tickets to special exhibitions
Free tickets to Vincent van Gogh: His Life in Art, according to level of membership
Discounted parking at MFAH garages
Free or discounted lectures and programs
Discounted admission at Bayou Bend and Rienzi
Discounts at the MFA Shop
Discounted tickets to MFAH Films
Invitations to exhibition preview parties
Complimentary subscriptions to bimonthly Calendar and weekly e-newsletter.

Good for two adults and children under 18.

What a deal!

Looking forward to many more wonderful visits.

I just read that the famous Van Gogh Sunflower painting will no longer travel because it is very fragile. So take advantage of this show being here in our great hometown of Houston.

Also stop by Van Gogh Up Close after you’ve seen the actual exhibit.

This is “an immersive, family-friendly experience filled with art-making activities, photo-ops, and interactive fun.”

This was really cute and fun for kids as well as adults.

“Gogh” support the museum!!

Great Way to Spend a Day

By mjsheridan130 |

I was pleasantly surprised at how big this museum was an how diverse its holding were. While it doesn't necessarily have the biggest names in art, the art on display is really quite beautiful. It wasn't crowded when we went at all and was really an enjoyable experience overall.

Private tour

By Kimera C |

I loved it. Took a group there while they were at a convention so we had a private tour. So that being said the tour guide added so much. It was extremely interesting but I probably would have missed a lot without her.

Excellent Experience

By SashaCT |

The visit to MFAH was thoroughly enjoyable. The architecture of the museum is a pleasure in and of itself - a very well thought out and enjoyable space. The collection is strong, although stronger in some areas than in others. For instance, the selection of European renaissance and baroque art includes many high-quality works, but few really important ones. No Raphael or Rembrandt, and only a couple of paintings by Botticelli and Van Dyck. The collection does get progressively stronger, though, especially from post-impressionism onward. The early 20th century is particularly good, with many of the greats included - Modigliani, Picasso, Kirchner, Soutine, Matisse, Leger. Also strong is collection of abstract expressionism, and I was very pleased to learn about some excellent Latin American abstract art that I was completely unaware of (Milton Dacosta, Aluísio Carvão).

Rude

By Woj001 |

Not very inviting. Felt the staff was uninformed as we asked questions to find paintings and they didn’t know where they were or if they were there. Also they started kicking us out 15 minutes before closing due to an event so I felt that was rude. However felt the museum was curated well with a lot to see

This place is gold

By Draghignazzo |

It is huge. If you like an all around, maybe one day is not enough.
Still, you can take the path you are more attracted to.
There is something for everyone who loves art.
Up to best European museums.

Busy place

By Jared |

Nice place. My daughter and her friends enjoyed. It was actually very busy on the day I went with a lot of school groups. Maybe just bad timing.

Glassel School of Art is a new addition to the Museum complex.

By DaveHayTX |

Unlike the rest of the Museum of Fine Arts, this is less about displaying art that it is about producing it. I runs programs for young people from elementary school through High School, as well as for adults. The building architecture is intended to inspire creativity. The outside wall panels and windows are all different sizes and shapes. The sloped roof of one building extends from the top of the third floor to the ground and holds a garden to walk through. Inside the classroom wing was, at the time of my visit several collection of works by seventh graders: Japanese drawings reproduced as indentations on copper sheets; paintings in the fashion of Van Gogh; three dimensional models of homes; etc.

In the main building are a large studio and a place for artists to gather and socialize.

From the rooftop seating area, you can see views in all directions of the Houston Skyline.

Oh, and I misspoke in one regard. On the grounds of the art school (on display) are a collection of various sculptures, including the stainless steel "Cloud Column" by Anish Kapoor.

A Highlight of My Houston Trip

By The Autistic Traveler |

I extremely recommend the MOFAH to all visitors to Houston; you won’t be disappointed! The diversity and educational value of the hundreds and hundreds of works here is admirable and among the best in the US. Portraits and paintings fill dozens of gallery rooms on the second floor, many of them huge and immersive, like the art swallows you and invites you into their scene. Being a personal fan of Impressionism, I enjoyed the vast collection of this genre in the museum. Works of all types represent nearly all world regions and timelines in history (e.g. Egyptian carvings and tombs and Asian sculptures). Everyone of all interests is bound to discover something fascinating here.

When you visit, be sure to pass through the underground light tunnel to access the museum’s second facility across the street, in which you’ll find intricate Italian glass carvings, Spanish and colonial-era art artifacts, and a substantial exhibition celebrating Black culture. I particularly enjoyed the Black culture exhibition, curated magnificently with several eye-opening portraits and culturally-rich lifestyle scenes. In the Spanish/colonial-era space, I loved viewing the ancient maps explorers used to navigate the oceans in the early history of “modern” America.

I could go on and on praising the Museum of Fine Arts—I really loved my time here. I’ll devote the conclusion of my review to important informational pointers:

- Admission is a reasonable $19 per adult, available on-site. I’m forgetting children’s admission prices and others.

- In order to safely remain open in light of COVID-19, all visitors will have their temperature checked prior to entering the museum. Face masks and social distancing are required. The temperature screening process is very straightforward and quick, and I found myself within the gallery areas in no time.

- Wheelchair accessibility is clearly up to ADA regulations, with elevators giving access to every part of the facility.

- The on-site cafe remains closed due to COVID-19, as of June 2020. Just take note of this and make sure you satisfy your appetite before your visit!

- I applaud the museum for providing many Spanish-language translations/subtitles alongside English captions of artworks. Very cool.

I’ll be returning next visit to Houston! Thanks for the world-class experience!

Really great exhibits

I had a really good day at this museum. They had some very cool exhibits will go back when I'm in town?

Hockney Exhibit/Not Van Gogh!

By Y8807OGrobertw |

The Van Gogh/Hockney Exhibit was actually quite nice and we enjoyed viewing the exhibit. HOWEVER, it should have been called the Hockney Exhibit with a few Van Gogh paintings. We did not know anything about Hockney, but did enjoy his bright colorful unusual paintings. But, again, we were expecting to see a LOT more Van Gogh pictures and for the price of the tickets, we were very disappointed. Next time, I will call ahead of time and make sure that what I am planning to see is what is actually there!

EXCELLENT show

By CD-HouTx |

The Van Gogh exhibit was outstanding!! Not to mention the rest of the museum, the gift shop and cafe. MFAH has evolved into a national treasure and a destination not to be missed.

British Royal Family Exhibit

Really enjoyed the special British Royal Famil Exhibit that the museum had. There was so much information I learned and the fashion exhibits were quite nice.

Great Museum

Always enjoy a visit to this power packed museum...always a variety of exhibits...too much to see for one day. Restaurant food, however, overpriced, though good.

By LBHouston11 |

Have gone to exhibits as well as the shorts for the academy awards and just love everything about the museum.
The holiday party for members of a must-and bring the kids!

Lovely facility with nice permanent collection and great special exhibits

By PhyllisBarrier |

We came to Houston to see the special exhibits - expensive but worth the price. We especially enjoyed the Norman Rockwell exhibit that included a section on FDR’s Four Freedoms. We were there on a Monday, December 30. The museum is usually closed on Mondays, and that made Houston work into our travel plans.
One problem was the cafe. It was supposed to open at 11:00. Staff said they weren’t ready, then when they finally opened an hour or so later, it was a pitiful selection. People were waiting to order off the regular menu. Staff should have said they would only have pastries, soup, which sounded like leftovers. They should have been more honest from the beginning. We left and had lunch at the Monarch in the Hotel Zaza across the street.

Hockney-Van Gogh exhibit

By ppettyHtown |

The museum had a special opening for members on a Monday when normally closed to view the wonderful Hockney-Van Gogh exhibit as well as the reconfigured American galleries.

The Hockney charcoal drawings and paintings were exquisite. And the example of how Hockney uses his iPad to draw and paint was fascinating. See this exhibit before it closes!

Van Gogh Exhibit

By Don G |

Have been to the special exhibits at Houston MFA and they have been some of the best and most unique exhibits I have seen anywhere including NY and Boston. Van Gogh exhibit is no exception. Very informative, wide variety and you really get a feel for this amazing artist I recommend it highly. Allow at least 2-3 hours. Also don’t miss the children’s interactive exhibit.

William Forsythe: Choreographic Objects

By Karen G |

Loved this exhibit! Felt like I was a kid again. Go before the exhibit ends September 15, 2019. Staff at this museum were kind and helpful.

no surprise

By STHoward84 |

did we have to have the anachronistic super-chunky terrazzo floor? it works well with Gyula Kosice's hydrospatial city because it looks like a background of space objects but otherwise is just busy. the terrible lighting of Zanele Muholi's portrait is a great disservice to the striking and mesmerizing piece - destroys the entire contrast effect.

A Beautiful Way to Beat the Summer Heat

By volcanogirl |

This is a beautiful museum spread across three large buildings. We have a museum membership and enjoy seeing their rotating exhibits. For this visit, we saw an exhibit of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art that featured artists like Cezanne and Van Gogh, and a whimsical interactive exhibit that was in complete contrast to it. This immersive experience began with us being led behind a black curtain into a beautiful, dreamy landscape composed of over 3,000 cascading LED lights changing colors from blue to purple to pink and green. Bean bag chairs on the floor and the dim lighting encouraged people to linger and relax. The title "Pixel Forest and Worry Will Vanish" seemed very appropriate, and it was a great place to take a break from the summer heat. If you want to visit the museum, it has free general admission on Thursdays, and there's paid parking available in the attached parking garage. Don't miss the sculpture garden and cafe across the street. James Turrell's light tunnel is also a favorite. You could easily spend a day here and not see everything this amazing museum has to offer.

thursday nights are free!

By mdarenfrow |

Take a chance and try something new or go to your favorite art spot. This museum always has a new exhibit for you to see. Thursdays are free for the main hall and its a great social spot to come and meet friends and even a date!

Visited couple years back. Wonderful experience.

Worked in this wonderful museum couple years back. Used Metro from Club Quarters hotel to museum & only had few hours but overwhelmed by the diversity of art. Want to go back sometime

The new Kinder Building

By houstontravelingfool |

Was so looking forward to visiting this new building and it didn’t disappoint. It’s architecturally beautiful, allowing natural light to dance on exhibits throughout the three floors. Its interior staircase reminds me of New York’s Guggenheim. I loved the way the exhibits were spaced out, allowing people to really see each item and not be crowded by whatever was next to it. I had many favorites but LOVED the visual representation of cities’ populations with blown glass objects in various sizes. Most exhibits were quite contemporary, which only added to the drama of the building. All in all, a wonderful way to spend a delightful afternoon. Masks were required and it wasn’t very crowded so social distancing wasn’t an issue. Enjoy.

Excellent Exhibit - Rivals the Amsterdam Experience

By yellowpixels |

The Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam is an excellent place to visit - if you can get in!. If you are a Van Gogh fan and you are not interested in the international travel, pre-reserving tickets months in advance and the associated hassles.... the Houston Museum of Fine Art has a Van Gogh exhibit that you should not miss. This special exhibition was well put together and has quite a few private collection items as well as items on loan from several museums. You wont see Starry Starry Night ( that's in NYC) but you will see lots of Van Gogh and a few other things. There is a "hands on" room to explore too. One of the best Museum exhibitions I have ever been too. Kudos to the HMFA!

This exhibit only runs thru June 2019 so get going!

Love my membership

Wonderful Art Museum

Beautiful works of art on display in one grand hall after another. Our family with two kids = 7 & 8 years old really had a great time, slowly walking from room to room.

An outstanding visit, again!

By Gabriel H |

MFAH continues to strive for excellence. On this visit, we viewed the "Icons of Style" exhibit. It provides an outstanding collection of great photos, starting from the early 20th century and continuing for over 100 years. In addition, the photos and accompanying explanatory panels provide and outstanding overview of the various eras in fashion, starting from the early days in Paris and Italy, continuing with the transition to the US during and after World War II, and finishing with great photos combining modern models, recent fashions, and how Hollywood, fashions and social evolution brought us to where we are today. Great show!

One of the best museums I have ever been (and I have travelled a lot)

By GigiPM |

From the architecture and design of the exhibits and placement of the pieces to the INCREDIBLE variety of art represented and how friendly the staff is, this is one of my favorite museums. They have a great gift shop, too and in the contemporary arts building a couple of cafes that looked great.

LOVE IT!

A fine Museum for Fine Art

By Judith E |

Some people would never guess, but one of the biggest and best Art Museums in the world is in Houston Tx! There are often special exhibits there, but just the permanent art is amazing. You can spend days there. There are also photography exhibits, art from different countries, and often activities for children. And it's free on Thursdays!
It just up the street from The Houston Medical Center-- also the largest in the world!

Tudor Exhibit

Wonderful exhibit meeting the MFAH's high standard of excellence. The art work was fabulous and the display creative and appealing. Houston's premier art venue continues to bring the highest quality of international visual art representing thousands of years of history.

A wonderful experience!

The museum did a wonderful job with the van Gogh exhibit. I found it to be interesting and not overwhelming. The other museum exhibits were equally exhilarating. I highly recommend the fine art museum to anyone who enjoys fine art.

I live in Houston and visit this museum every few months when there is a new exhibit. The exhibits are always really cool! Beautiful part of the city too.

Great museum

Greatly enjoyed our visit there this week. Always a great place to walk through. The Van Gough exhibition was wonderful although extremely crowded. Lines to get in we're very long perhaps due to summer vacation. Worth the wait though. The exhibition for children was absolutely wonderful!!!!!

One of the Best Museums I've Been To

By Andre Thomas |

Coming from a city with a great reputation for museums (Chicago) I'd definitely add MFA Houston to my list of favorites. Currently, there's an amazing Latin American art exhibit that everyone should check out. The curation of each exhibit is impeccable.

Worth a visit for sure

By William Kim |

This museum is awesome. There are several buildings outlining. As a result, you'll want to spend several hours here (3-4 hours maybe). I only had 2 hours when I came here since I was in the area on a business trip so I had to carefully pick and choose which exhibits to see and not see. This place is great since exhibits from all over the world and from centuries past and present are featured. You honestly could spend an entire day here.

Try to come here on Thursdays as admission is free that day! The museum can get quite busy as a result, but I never felt overwhelmed as the museum itself was quite large and spacious.

This is definitely an attraction in the area I recommend to all. Quite impressed with all that this place has to offer.

Great way to usher in the New Year

By houstontravelingfool |

We went specifically for the Berthe Morisot exhibit on New Year’s Day. It was beautifully curated and hung. Impressionists are my favorites and Morisot didn’t disappoint. We then walked through the Norman Rockwell exhibit and it was well worth seeing up close. What an amazing artist! I was so taken with his faces and just stood there in awe. We are so fortunate to have this caliber museum in Houston and I’m proud to be a member.

Fabulous Van Gogh exhibit

By Rebecca M |

Spent 4 hours in this time limited exhibition expertly produced by the Houston Museum of Fine Art’s. It will end on June 27th. But...the museum will still be there! Lucky us! I learned so much and got an opportunity to see and interact with world class art. The entrance fee includes a listening device that gives more information about the art that you are viewing and puts it into the context of Vincent’s world. Great exhibition gift shop! The interactive section had so many innovative activities for both children and adults that makes it perfect for families with children ( although very young children would need supervision and assistance). Afterwards, lunch at the museum cafe proved to be a great choice. Good food and service at reasonable prices. My sister and I were so impressed that we are now museum members. Good to know: If you buy your tickets online, you can skip the sometimes long lines to buy on site. Can’t wait to go again!

Norman Rockwell exhibit was outstanding!

By Stephen K |

Although we live in Corpus Christi (3 1/2 hours to west), we will occasionally drive to the HMFA for especial exhibits. The Norman Rockwell exhibit was definitely worth the trip. In addition to the large Rockwell paintings there was lots of supplemental material to provide perspective. Also, make sure to use the parking garage just off Fanin - it is so convenient!

Great Collection

By jbushman2017 |

Just when you think you have seen everything you come to a museum like this and are reminded there is more. The collection here is large and varied. My wife and I spent our 2 hours just looking at the European art collection and we were really impressed. Each picture has a description and in many cases included information I have not known so even though you may be familiar with the Impressionists, for example, coming here you will likely read about something that is new to you. The bottom line for us is that the quality of the collection was impressive, for regular museum goers that were here for the first time-we were impressed, and after 2 hours we had not even attempted at least half of the museum. Well done Houston.

Fantastic collection of Art, well presented

By Gary F |

A large and very well presented museum over two adjacent buildings (connected). The Museum is easily accessed by train as it is right by one of the stations, and only a 10/15 minute ride from Downtown.

Allow at least a half day if you want to do the galleries justice, there is a lot to see. At the time of our visit there was a very interesting special exhibition (additional fee) that I assume changes regularly through the year.
Highly recommended if you enjoy art!

Van Gogh Exhibition

By Ruthie C |

The Van Gogh exhibition is great, a rare opportunity to see so many of his pieces in one place. They are displayed beautifully and the audio tour worked great and enhanced the experience. The space didn’t seem crowded helped by control of numbers entering at anyone time which added to the enjoyment of being able to view the art easily. The rest of the museum is also lovely and included in the exhibition entry. We visited the cafe for coffee, which was delicious but the ambience was very sparse and noisy so wouldn’t want to stay for a meal.

Great Space, well presented

By WanderlustGita |

The museum is large, spread out over two buildings. The free exhibitions were well presented in large spaces, and very interesting, especially the Beatrice Gonzales exhibition. We would have been interested in viewing the paid exhibitions, but they are quite expensive. There was plenty to see in the museum permanent collections. Definitely worth a visit

Free on Thursdays

By Jeremy G |

Wonderful place to go on a date or just to admire talented works of art. On thursdays it is free to the public and they have an outdoor patio bar set up by a food truck. When I went the foodtruck was selling very delcious phillipino food (I had a vegitarian jackfruit bao which tasted like a bbq brisket sandwhich).

Marvelous Museum

By Hey Joe |

You can count on MFAH to always have several interesting exhibits ongoing in addition to the resident displays of Fine Arts inside....and out. This weekend, we visited the Monet to Picasso Exhibit as well as the Norman Rockwell Exhibit and were totally enchanted with the variety of pieces and the educational perspective provided by the outstanding free audio tour option.

Lovely visit! Easy to maneuver and very welcoming.

By hollykg |

We spent a night outside of Houston before a graduation ceremony in College Station and really enjoyed our recent trip to the Museum! Parking in the garage was easy and it linked to the museum complex through indoor passages. The museum was a nice size, and we happened to be there on Thursday, when it was open late and was free —which was much appreciated after the fairly high entrance fee at the Johnson Space Center.

It was nice to see many young people there enjoying the museums, too. The employees were all very friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend a visit here! We also visited the contemporary art building.

I like to visit museums whenever I travel and this was really nice.

large and varied exhibits in outstanding museum

By Isabel089 |

too much to see in this outstanding and enormous museum in one visit. We enjoyed the Berthe Morisot and the Monet to Picasso exhibits, but there's much more to see. One really has to decide where to focus one's time.

A great place to visit in Houston

By Sam Zuo |

I happened to visit during the special exhibition of Monet to Matisse. The admission to special exhibition includes the general admission with a few extra dollars. I'd recommend the special admission if you are interested. The museum is huge with three different buildings. I entered through the east building where the special exhibition is located. It also hosted some old western paintings. The west building hosted another special exhibition and worldwide arts. I didn't make it to the north building because of lack of time. I believe it hosts the modern arts. It could take a whole day to carefully go through the exhibits. I really love it that they have a brief introduction about most of the exhibits to help you understand them.

One of the nicest museums

By Saundra |

This museum exceeded our expectations. The museum is clean modern and well laid out. The permanent exhibits are really interesting and well done. Don't miss the African Gold exhibit. The artifacts were collected by a Houstonian gentleman over his lifetime. I had no idea that Africa had such a history of gold artisans and objects. The articles represent their culture and beliefs of the time. There are also other gold objects from all over the world adjacent to the African gold exhibit.

Enjoyed the Impressionist exhibit

By Pat M |

Have to admit, i do not get the fascination with the tunnel
However, they have a very quality collection and a feiendly and helpful staff. Definitely worth admission price and a few hours.

Great little Restaurant down stairs. With great pizzas prepared freshly.

By lilmagg |

We went primarily to view the Impressionists wing. Highly pleased. One Monet I had not seen in picture books. The entire wing very striking for selection and quality. Highly pleased. One of the better collections I have seen in the states. Would love to go back and spend more time. Very nice museum of outstanding quality. One of the better ones I have been to outside of Europe. The small cafe downstairs in basement had very good food, excellently prepared pizzas, at decent prices. So if you have a chance grab a bite there. Nothing special to look at, but great service and
really good food for a museum setting. In other words you don't have to leave the building in the 100 degree heat just to eat decent food. Cool.

Wonderful day of escape and culture

By ranton |

Fantastic museum with an impressive permanent collection and visiting exhibits. Was very impressed with the quality and information provided in the audio tours.

GREAT MUSEUM VISIT

By Robin M |

The Museum of Fine Arts Houston was fantastic and very easy to get around, and the art exhibits were excellent, parking was very easy

Art on a weekend

By Bikram_Mom_Dad |

We were looking for something new to do on a weekend and we found it!
We were going to the Museum to see the exhibit on Vincent Van Gogh and decided to become memebers. We had no idea of all the different free perks for events that are given to memebers.
The exhibit of Van Gogh was amazing and now with our memebership looking forward to seeing others.

Great visit with family

By apflood |

My teenage daughters and I had a great time visiting MFAH. The items on display were wonderful and well spaced out. The free entry for military members was a nice bonus, we were not expecting that but happy. We will definitely visit again!

Interesting Exhibitions

By Delnor N |

Like many metropolitan at museums the MFAH has a fine permanent collection. What drew us in were the temporary exhibitions which cover a wide variety of interests. If you live in the area and plan on multiple visits a season pass is well worth it as it provides discounted parking and free/reduced rates for special exhibits and films. Our pass paid for itself after our first visiting exhibition.

Not worth the paper which ticket is printed on

By paulina_lip |

Don’t bother. Not even technically a museum as it contains no real art. A joke, really. Even for Houston, this is a low low bar

Major Exhibitions

By Penny B |

In the last two years I have been to 2 of the MFA's major exhibitions with mixed results. I fly into Houston to go see these exhibitions so when they are only marginal, its disappointing. I went to the Van Gogh exhibit this summer and was thoroughly disappointed. The major works shown in advertisement were reproductions. They had very few actual Van Gogh paintings, some drawings and elaborate 'stage' where you could immerse yourself in his paintings. Kinda cool esp for kids but very disappointing for someone who expected to see in person Iris's, Sunflowers, etc.
Prior to that I visited during the Michelangelo exhibition. There was 1 actual work by him, a 'cartoon' is what it was called. Parchment paper with sketch on it. The Michelangelo exhibit had the sistine chapel projected onto the ceiling which was cool. There was an excellent Titian with that exhibit.
The Impressionist exhibit was a few years back and it was fabulous. One of the best collections I had ever seen.
The museum has an excellent permanent collection, so you wont be disappointed with what is generally available on a daily basis. There are a few other museums in the area and you could spend a whole day in that neighborhood if you like different kinds of art.
I don't remember the fee, its minimal except if its a special exhibit. It is also not very far from the Rice U campus and some wonderful restaurants in the U district.

Surprised by the magnitude

By Sunni M |

I live in Houston, so I'm always surprised to find awesome places around here. This museum was like unfolding a fun spot. I kept being surprised by the extent of their collection. I'm not a connoisseur of fine art, but I enjoy it. That being said, HMFA isn't as great as the Louvre, but it's worth the price, for sure.

World class fine art museum

By Zoomertravelblog |

They have a lot of works by top artists - Picasso, Monet, many European artists and American. We throughly enjoyed the exhibit. Definately a must see.

Excellent Van Gogh exhibition

By Kay |

Great exhibition. I wish I could have spent longer exploring the museum and the area around it which looked full of character.

Fabulous, massive museum

By AG |

Fabulous museum. My favorite part was the classical art. A wonderful collection and definitely world-class. The new wing and the sculpture gardens were also not to be missed. The middle building was nice as well, but it has the same archaeological stuff as you'll find elsewhere. So if you are pressed for time, I'd do: Beck (classical) > Kinder (modern) and then retrace back to Law.

A Beautiful Museum That Can Easily Fill an Entire Day

By volcanogirl |

The MFAH is an excellent museum with art spread across three large buildings and connected by a tunnel system. We're museum members and enjoy coming to see their rotating exhibits. For this visit, we saw the Armand Hammer collection called From Rembrandt to Van Gogh. It was a really fantastic diverse collection featuring art from across four different centuries. Paintings from Rembrandt, Titian, Cezanne, Monet, Van Gogh, and other familiar names. My favorite was the portrait of King David by an artist I was unfamiliar with Gustave Moreau - really beautiful. They had an audio tour you could listen to. You had to scan a sound chip next to each painting to access the audio; that made it a bit difficult if people were gathered around a painting. I saw woman using a wheelchair struggling to get close enough to use the scanner, so I think they need to rethink that setup to make it more accessible, but the tour was interesting. We also enjoyed Kusama's exhibit that simulates floating Japanese water lanterns through the use of light and mirrors. We stepped inside a dark room to stand on a platform and slowly golden lights came on surrounding us. Very pretty and serene, a modern contrast to the other exhibit. I love that the artist created it to mark her 80th birthday. We parked in the parking garage attached to the museum; look for the big yellow sculptural arrow to find the entrance. The museum is free for general admission on Thursdays and has a great gift shop and cafe attached. Also a very nice sculpture garden with Houston's own bean sculpture by Anish Kapoor. James Turrell's light tunnel is also really cool and worth seeing. You could easily spend a day here and not see everything this museum has to offer.

A great space to view art

By Demanding_customer45 |

Seen several exhibitions here and enjoyed all of them. A great venue with an interesting programme.
Brought kids here to see the Van Gogh when it was in town. Work really well presented and interestingly covered in text descriptions. After the masterpieces there was a brilliant interactive experience for kids.

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

By Ron S |

It's an excellent regional museum. Its two buildings contain a well-structured collection of paintings and ancient artifacts. Old masters are represented by Pintoricchio, Botticelli, Aert de Gelder, Rembrandt, Memling. Nice collection of impressionists, plus Sorolla, Chagall, Soutine, Modigliani, Munch, Magritte, Dali, Matisse, Picasso, Rivera.

Plan on Spending a Full Day to See Art Spread Across Three Large Buildings

By volcanogirl |

The MFAH is one of our favorite museums. They have a wonderful permanent collection with art spread across three large buildings; definitely allocate a full day here if you have the time. We're museum members and enjoy coming to see their rotating exhibits - always something new to see each time we come. For this visit, we saw two wildly different exhibits. The first was the Tamara de Lempicka exhibition - really glamorous with bold, vivid colors and Art Deco style. I love how the museum surrounded her art with gorgeous dresses from the time, cocktail shakers, pretty perfume bottles, and other items to set the mood. They provided audio headsets to describe her art and showed a brief movie about her life which was pretty unconventional for the time. The second exhibit was The Pavia Tapestries - the intricate tapestries were accompanied by a narrated program which would shine spotlights on individual sections of each tapestry to discuss what was happening and the significance to the displayed battles that were playing out; they were surrounded by incredible suits of armor and weapons from the 1500s. I love how the museum takes something static and turns it into something immersive. A few don't miss items I really like - James Turrell's light tunnel that connects two of the buildings and Anish Kapoor's Cloud Column that's in the museum's sculpture garden - a great place to take some nice photos. There's also a cafe where you can grab lunch and an attached parking garage where you can park for a fee. The museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and has free access to the permanent collection on Thursdays. Definitely a great way to spend the day and beat the summer heat. We look forward to coming back and seeing some new exhibits on display.

Van Gogh Exhibit

Great exhibit. Crowded but good. Good for MFA for getting this exhibit and for getting the crowds. New parking wasn't bad. Enjoyed the afternoon at MFA

Two great exhibitions

By Stephen S |

Great time enjoying the Impressionist exhibition currently available, but the MC Escher exhibition is absolutely fantastic. 400 original works, get your tickets and enjoy!

An excellent spacious & well laid out museum

We reallyenjoyed our visit to this lovely gallery from the amusing entry hall to the lunch in the restaurant, and all the art in between.

Mother's Day treat

By #becourageous |

A special treat for me on Mother's Day!! Experiencing VvG with my daughter was a special treat!! I've been to numerous VvG exhibits. We enjoyed the audio tour and was able to truly take our time and discuss the many exhibits. This particular day it was not crowded and I got in FREE because I was a MOTHER!!

A great family event to enjoy!!

Be sure to visit the MFAH Sculpture Garden across the street, too. Above the plaza has a cool view of downtown Houston. The art school lobby is a work of art, too.

Not crowded even though it was a free visit day

By CarolChE73 |

I enjoyed my visit to this museum, but could not find the parking garage to save my life. It was not where Google said it was. I even asked a policeman and he couldn't tell me. I wound up parking a few blocks away on the street. For future reference, it is to the left of the main entrance (between Main and Fannin Streets). Since it was a free day, I spent $20 an the special exhibit of Van Gogh and an English artist inspired by him, named Hockney. I enjoyed that presentation. The rest of the museum had small collections of a variety of art. You could see a lot of art history in a small amount of time. I liked the Museum of Natural Sciences better if you have to choose one.

By Jane B |

So worth the visit. A must do if in Houston. Great variety of exhibitions and so well curated. Put it on the list for your visit.

Big art museum

By dolooper |

This museum was my first priority sight in Houston and I was not disappointed. Staff were friendly and helpful. Parking garage is so large I had trouble finding my car later. So be sure you exit from the same door you entered the museum from the garage.

A must see on your travels

By Sigrid S |

So much to see and experience. This collection is vast and varied. Make sure you save a minimum of 2-3 hours to simply scratch the surface of what this museum has to offer.

Great museum and worth the cost!

By Fruitekiwi |

Wonderful museum and lots to see. Plan to spend an entire day there, as we weren't able to. Regardless, we really enjoyed our time.

Vincent Van Gogh exhibit

By ppettyHtown |

This special exhibit began in March and goes through June 27, 2019. It is a must see!

It showcases some of Van Gogh’s early sketches and models. It is beautifully mounted and has many oil paintings from the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. You can see one of Van Gogh’s 27 self portraits, the Irises and other masterpieces. Some of the early sketches are a revelation!

This is the only museum where this exhibit will be seen and was co-curated by the MFAH. It is a “must see” for art lovers.

If you can, go early in the morning when the museum first opens and try to avoid the weekend because It is being well attended and gets crowded! But worth it!

Interesting permanent and special exhibits

By Ss |

This was our second time visiting Houston, saw the fabulous M.C. Escher special exhibit the first time and wanted to see some of the permanent exhibits this second time — really enjoyed the Asian arts section and especially enjoyed the immersion experience of the Infinity Room by Yayoi Kusama and also in the atrium - the interactivity with the your live action/motion changed into slow motion/distortion on a very large screen.
Traversing through the various museum buildings is very confusing, especially if you are unable to use stairs/escalators but the museum staff throughout will help guide you.

In Houston! Wow!

By goodfoodLR |

A coup, procuring this exhibit. The presentation was handled well, on Van Gogh's state of mind, and evolution. The audio tour was over my head, pretentious fit truly aimed at a lay audience. We did the docent guided tour, "Bob" was engaging, and thought provoking.

Museum has Impressionists, Remingtons. Not enough time, we plan to go back.

One quibble. Very busy, had to drive in unfamiliar city to find a spot. We parked in a (free, thank you Houston) ) lot that was part of the Park, clear signage "Lot E". No one at the Museum NOR the offer w/ the Houston PD stained there knew where that was. Finally asked the gentleman directing the valet parking. His "guess" was in fact the location. There are apparently lots A-F, surely someone can figure out how to assist.

What an amazing place

By David L |

I love museums, and this one was especially nice. I enjoy Asian art, and they didn't have a huge amount of work on display, but what they had was exceptional. Both the art of Islam and the Impressionist exhibits were amazing.

A Great Cultural Resource

By CJTravelerTexas |

On May 1, 2019, my wife and I were in Houston, Texas, for the primary purpose of visiting the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) to see several special exhibits. Of course, the special exhibit first and foremost in our minds was the one entitled “Vincent Van Gogh: His Life in Art,” which is in Houston from March 10 to June 27, 2019. This particular exhibit – organized by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, and the MFAH – has more than 50 of this great artist’s masterworks.

Another exhibit we found interesting was “Between Play and Grief: Selections from the Latino American Collection.” This exhibit had more than three dozen works of modern and contemporary Latin American and Latinx art spanning six decades of social and political expression. This exhibit, organized by the MFAH, is in place from March 16 to September 8, 2019.

The other two special exhibits – both in Houston from March 3 to May 27, 2019 – were “Sally Mann: A Thousand Crossings” and “Odyssey: Jack Whitten Sculpture, 1963-2017.” The Mann exhibit was organized by the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. The Whitten exhibit was organized by the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We were less than impressed with these two exhibits.

In addition to these four special exhibits, we also visited many of the MFAH’s galleries to see some of the permanent pieces. The MFAH is an excellent cultural resource.

Great Van Gogh exhibit

By U6558DQjohnp |

Wife and I took a special trip to Houston to see the recent Van Gogh exhibit held at the Houston MFA. It was amazing. The set up of the exhibit, the flow of the exhibit was outstanding. Obviously, I lot of thought and effort went into presenting this artist's life and work.
Thank you for a job well done!

IMPRESSIONIST AUTUMN PRIVATE TOUR

By Ron Murry |

Our Covenant Group (all 16 of us) went on a Private Tour at MFAH to see 'Impressionist Autum' (Beerthe Morisot and Monet to Picasso). Our Tour Guide was Eric Trimmreck and it was a Breathtaking Experience. Such Beautiful Art has to be seen in person to be thoroughly enjoyed. We also enjoyed our Lunch at the MFA Cafe following the tour. Our Tour Guide, Eric Trimmreck, joined us for lunch.
This was a Very Fun and Rewarding Outing. The paintings are Beautiful and you learn a lot about what transpired a hundred or so years ago ... and more. This place is Awesome .. and so is the MFA Cafe. It was a Wonderful Experience to lean about the Famous Artists of Yesteryear. Also check out the MFA Cafe ... the food we had was Tastyliciousness and a Beautiful Presentation.

Best part is the interactive section for kids

By Patti M |

The wait was unbelievable and it was a bit confusing on which line to get in, but the exhibit and gift shop were cool. I did wish they had the starry night print but they did not. Instead they had it in the interactive area where the kids could go up close and touch parts of the exhibit. The audio wasn't that great as it was so packed that people were standing in the way so you couldn't click on the individual stations.

Tufors to Windors

By Karen R |

This was an exceptional exhibition. The audio accompaniment was wonderful to further explain the paintings. It wa like a a quick English history lesson.
The Museum is exceptional and always has amazing exhibits. I have been a member for many years and encourage everyone to join.

Lovely museum with a great Impressionist collectio and well curated and staged exhibits

By Pepper |

I would not call this one of the great art museums of the world- but its well worth visiting. Great impressiomist exhibit- a very nice western art set of rooms and a little bit of everything ( like wonderful dresses of the period ). A sarcophogus up close- a nice exhibit of blue and white China- it keeps you interested.

Georgia O'Keefe Exhibit

By Chrisinkingwood2 |

The exhibit was quite good although we felt the lighting on Georgia O'Keefe's work was a bit dim and made it hard to see the work.

Fabulous Museum

By Bwimms |

We love art museums; this one is great. Each gallery had just enough artwork so the viewers aren’t overwhelmed. Cafe had the menu of a fine restaurant. The gift shop had items for a variety of budgets.

Horrible Lack of Signs abd directions

By Lynda R |

Horrible directions once inside museum. Very few directions to find museum entrance. Asked a question several times and got a blank stare, I do not know, or person barely spoke English. Quality of art work is world class!

Surely the museum can do much better than what we endured.

Art Oasis in TX and Gulf Area

By BWeissman |

Loved the well done Van Gogn special exhibiit here, and then took in their other collections of sacred art, Eqyptian and Roman art, etc. Really enjoyed it. Nice gift shops too.

Van Gogh Exhibit was OUTSTANDING

By Deborah M |

This will be gone in a short time and everyone should see it. It was good to see parents introduce their children to fine art. The interaction exhibit was very good for adults and children! Well done!

Very Dissappointed

By Lexus |

In any other large city with a MOFA, they are at the very least DOUBLE the size of the Houston MOFA. It took us less than an hour to walk through all of the rooms. There were mostly exhibits you had to pay extra for, and were not included with the CityPass I bought. Use your CityPass ticket on the Houston Zoo instead!!

Incredible permanent collection, absolutely a do not miss

By Rich R |

One of my favorite museums so far!
To begin with Thursdays are free from 11am to 9pm for the permanent collection, starting on the base floor with an astonishing optical illusion collection from different artists, definitely you shouldn't miss the Yayoi Kusama infinity room they have. From there you have 2 more floors to go full of Amazon pieces that present artists from all around the world, it would be a hard choice to pick a favorite.
I didn't get to see all the collection in one run, if you take your time on each room, check out all the pieces, videos and descriptions might take more than 1 day visit unless you arrive early and leave till your finished, I was there for a good 4 hrs and didn't get to finish the first building, it was until later that I realized it is split in 3 buildings connected through an underground tunnel also filled with art pieces. They also have the Leonelli cafe with great coffee and breakfast, there's a nice restaurant if you're feeling hungry I didn't eat there but the decor is beautiful. I'm definitely going back to finish.

a Fine Museum , worth the visit

By Aasim N |

Nice spacious , lighted well . Has a whole variety of exhibits & different genres of art. Time just flew going thru the museum . Also has a nice museum shop. Thursdays are free admission Recommend a visit here if in Houston

Quite a nice exposure they have

3 buildings, a very exclusive sample, a Vangoogh Hockney exposition is quiet interesting; and they have a good representation of contemporary art, specially latam artist.
We enjoy the visit a lot

The New Kinder Building Rocks

By mojomo |

We visited the new Kinder building at MFAH today!

What a great experience. I visited with my two daughters; one was visiting from overseas.

The desk off of parking was closed, so we entered through the other building and crossed the Turrell bridge into the main (older) part of the museum and then low and behold there is a really cool “rainbow” tunnel that takes you into the new Kinder building.

A description from the MFAH website:

The Nancy and Rich Kinder Building contains both departmental and cross-departmental galleries. This approach will allow visitors to not only delve into the materials, geographies, and art forms in which modern and contemporary art have developed, but also to explore the ways in which varied artistic ideas, styles, and themes have transcended those boundaries. The multiple stories of modern and contemporary art-making are articulated throughout the building.

What a wonderful space! We were drawn from this area into a light are installment to the left & did not realize we needed to take elevators up to 3 more floors of the Kinder building.

The place is huge and filled with fantastic artwork, photography and contemporary pieces.

It was a magical mystery art tour. Each section was a wonderful discovery.

Totally worth the price of general admission that includes the new building.

Masks are required at this time due to Covid. There is a temperature check upon entry. You may purchase in advance; we were walk ins.

Hand sanitizer provided throughout.

Unfortunately a few sections of the new area; most notably the Infinity Light Room by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, were closed because of Covid.

We were able to see a new Turrell installment.

I was having some back issues and therefore rather than take the escalator in the main building or the stairs in the Kinder, we used the elevators. May not have been the best choice in Covid times, but they were large and we had them all to ourselves.

This is the second time we have visited MFAH since Covid became an issue. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to see this fantastic new building and felt that all the necessary precautions were taken to make it as safe as possible.

Afterward we walked through the outdoor sculpture garden.

Van Gogh!

By Nathan O |

Our artistic family member had been studying Van Gogh online. Then, when we visited Houston from California and she had a day free, she spent 6 hours with Vincent. What a surprise and a treat!

Rockwell and Bacon exhibit

By pnkgirl27 |

We purchased two adult tickets to see the two exhibitions and it came to $50. It was nicely set up but also crowded on a Sunday to really get close enough to see the pieces of art. They handout individual audio devices which makes people linger longer than normal at each piece if compared to reading the printed information signs. On the positive side, photos were allowed without flash IF you could get close enough to take one.

Huge museum

By Jennifer Groysman |

This museum is huge. It has three buildings. You can spend all day here and probably not see it all. I was able to do most of one building. Lots of beautiful paintings and statues. Worth a trip.

Well organized Rockwell exhibit

By C F |

Our first trip to the Museum of Fine Arts was a most enjoyable experience. We were thoroughly impressed with the way we were introduced to a few works and were immediately directed through a striking and sobering photo exhibit of the Great Depression and World War II that gave great insight to Rockwell’s work and caused us to study the remaining pieces even closer than we would have.

Since we only saw his nostalgic and humorous works when we were children, it was wonderful to see the serious subject matter toward the end of the exhibit. It is not that human behavior changed from 1930 to the 1970s; how he was allowed to paint it changed dramatically. That man really laid his emotions on the canvas and the museum did a fine job of showing us why.

Wow!

By M B |

We enjoyed this impressive museum on a free admission Thursday. The collection is VERY vast and varied. We were there for about 3 hours.

Our evening at the museum!

By John B |

My wife and I have been Houston Museum of Fine Arts members for two years. Membership, has been one of our best decisions. Having access to high-quality interesting museum-offerings is important to us. Last month we attended the complimentary Friday night happy hour + Jazz concert + access to the Tamara Lempicka exhibit. Ours, was a wonderful evening in the most perfect setting. Every aspect of our evening at the museum was enjoyable. The jazz concert and museum exhibition, were stellar. Afterwards, learning how much my wife had enjoyed our evening together, has inspired me to soon plan another museum event.

Interesting museum

By Menekag |

Very interesting collection of art from around the world. Definitely worth a visit if in Houston. One can easily spend a day in here, specially as there are many rooms with collections from around the world to look at

A World Class Museum with Something for Everyone

By volcanogirl |

The MFAH is one of our favorite museums. Their collection is spread across three large buildings, and there's really something for everyone here. It would be hard to see everything in a day; I'd recommend taking a look online and planning ahead on what you'd like to see most. We're museum members and enjoy their rotating exhibits which change frequently. For this visit, we came to see the Gauguin exhibit and really enjoyed it. I like that they showed a quick movie about Gauguin's life and also provided audio headsets that described the paintings as we wandered through the exhibit. You can park in the attached parking garage for a fee. The museum sent us a complimentary parking pass to use since we're members, and we appreciated that. There's a nice cafe where you can have lunch and also an outdoor sculpture garden to enjoy. They're closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The permanent collection is free on Thursdays. This was a great way to spend a winter day and escape the cold. We look forward to coming back.

Houston MFA

By S7740BKmatthews |

This art museum Exceeded my expectations both with its quality of pieces and how extensive it was. Must be the largest art museum in country or right there with the MET. I also loved how we traveled to each museum through tunnels. Even the tunnels were a work of art. Stood here about 5 hours, but I thankfully had comfortable shoes. You do not realize how much there is to see.

Yes yes yes!

By ashfi |

Amazing selection of artwork! So intriguing and a great time. My family usually can only do about 45 minutes in a museum, and we made it to two hours!

As good as Europe

By Placido521 |

The vast collection of art and sculpture rivals that of many museums in Europe. The arrangement of the collection is by time period and location, which makes it easier to find your favorite art. 5he gift shop and cafe are nice, but the art is well worth visiting a couple of times a year. I was impressed by the display and explanation of each work. Very good- plan on 4+ hours.

Just OK.

By mfs8639 |

Another museum with too much empty space. Terrible map provided and zero signage to direct visitors. The Van Gogh exhibit was very good and worth the extra $40. Other than that, we found the experience disappointing. They need to do a much better job of helping visitors experience the museum and exhibits. I found it curious that many of the attendants barely spoke English and could not answer basic questions about the exhibits they were staffing. This museum has potential, but work needs to be done

Van Gogh exhibit

By L B |

Leaves at the end of June. Interactive was so much fun. The exhibit was well done with information on Van Gogh’s life and art.

Peaceful contemplation

By ravb2013 |

Museum has good mix of art from different ages. Little something for everyone. Permanent exhibits area is quiet and you don’t feel rushed . Love the late 19 th century area

Exhibits

We are members and went to see the Rockwell exhibit and the Spanish treasures exhibit. Both were very good.

This place is massive

By LadyN516 |

I go to art museums in pretty much any city/country i visit and I can say this place is absolutely massive. Unless you are there for a specific exhibit or collection, you definitely need to dedicate a half day at least.

Excellent Van Gogh exhibit

By Gabriel H |

We waited for the opening of this exhibit and it is indeed worth waiting for. Nicely displayed, with excellent annotations, the chronological presentation of Van Gogh's all too short career offers an intimate view of his artistic development, his painful interactions with society, his loneliness and the terrible impact of his mental illness on his quality of life. In the process, you get to see his masterpieces along with his less well known paintings, associated with his state of mind at the time. Don't miss this exhibit!

for art lovers

By henri m |

I have been trying to see all museums on my travels and of course this art museum is one of the best especially when they have a feature artist on display (Beatriz Gonzalez) what an experience
