Smaller museum but some very nice space and rocket exhibits

By Mark H |

The best part for me was the F1 engine in the rocket garden. You can walk right up to it and see the nuts, bolts, welds, and every intricate detail of this monster engine from the Saturn V. The exhibit about how rockets guide themselves through their flight was very interesting, too. Our kids enjoyed playing in the kids area for a short time. It was cool to see but I don't think multiple visits would be necessary unless spread out over time to allow for exhibits to change or grow.

Nice Museum.

By ChickenParm41 |

Nice Museum! Great for kids. Very interactive.

Lots of Astronaut Memorabilia, displays, diaramas, and video presentations.

Good outdoor things to see

By iwk2travel |

We did not have time to go into the museum (which I hear has many floors of really cool space stuff) but we checked out all the displays outside. There are some excellent displays outside if you are like us who didn't have time to check out the entire museum.

Worth a Visit!

By theOddBee |

This is a nice museum and a great place to spend a part of the day when passing through. I found this museum on Roadside America, which mentions the grave of Ham the first Space Chimp, and I stopped on a road trip through central New Mexico.

Some of my favorite things to see were the large missiles outside on the property. I also liked the space-in-pop-culture memorabilia, and the exhibit on rockets. I went by myself but I could see how this might be interesting to older children who are interested in space. If anything, it's a good place to get out of the car and stretch your legs, and do some learning in the process.

This place is wheelchair accessible. Most of what you'll want to see is inside. There is a gift shop but no restaurant; Alamogordo is not lacking for good restaurants, so there's bound to be something you'll like nearby.

Ham is outside, interred by the flag poles. If you aren't familiar with this chimp, I recommend doing research before you visit.

So much to see

By pris0nbreak |

A great place to visit. Something for everyone. Very informative. Great layout and wonderful building. Touching to see the grave of the first chimp in space - Ham.

Great for space buffs!

By Sheila B |

For those of us that grew up with the space program, this was great. You really appreciate how brave those men and women were, going up in things that are held together with duct tape and baling wire.

Don't miss this!

By Mary F |

This museum was a step back in time telling about the birth of the space program. The five story building has windows that overlook the mountains which is breathtaking. The information covers the beginning of the space program up to the present. Don't miss the IMAX show or the Planetarium presentation.

A Vast World of Space Information and History

By Ginger B |

This is a very nice museum. It has a whole lot of information and history. There is a lot to read so plan plenty of time to go through. There are some really cool interactive exhibits children and adults will like. It is well worth the visit.

Unexpected and Worth the Stop

By JoeBenevides |

I was surprised to find this Smithsonian Affiliate museum in the middle of New Mexico! We were on our way to the Trinity Site open house the next day and saw this museum listed on the map, but we were not expecting much until we got there and realized this was really something. Definitely worth the stop.

Out of this world

By perfectstranger |

If you're an astroNUT this is the place. Out side there are several displays to look at. Inside a nice gift shop. Pay your very reasonable fee, and take the elevator to the fourth floor. This place is packed with stuff. We took a casual stroll and were amazed at the quality of the displays. It is set up in an intelligent way with many interesting things. When we walked out we were surprised to find that we had spent 4 hours there. Absolutely worth the time and money.

excellent history

By louisd237 |

An Excellent experience. I learned things I didn't know and I followed the space program from it's beginning

Birthday parties

By Kristina C |

The museum itself is great to visit. However if you decide to have a child's birthday party, be sure you stay on top of communications. We had everything set and paid for with age appropriate activities planned for our child's party. Come party day, we went down early and got the room set up and ready. When it came time for the activities, the teacher and event planner had very clearly not communicated on what had been discussed. I had to pull my phone out with the email and show him the activities that were supposed to have taken place. He was surprised and caught completely off guard. By the time he came back with supplies for those activities most parents and children had left or were ready to leave the party. The kids had fun, but I was thoroughly disappointed and embarrassed having told all the parents what activities were planned that didn't take place. We spent a good deal of money on a one income military home for this party, only to be let down. The Monday after the party I sent a polite email letting the event planner know what had happened, close to a week later we have heard not a word. So, long story short, if your child wants a space themed party.... maybe try somewhere else.

It is worth the visit.

By Spsimmons |

Interesting to visit this museum, the children have a lot of fun with the simulators and all the objects and artifacts of the astronauts, it is worth visiting, and you can also take great photos both inside the building and outside with the rockets on display.

Surprising gem of a museum

By portlyvulture |

If you are into anything space related, this museum is not to be missed. Overshadowed by everything White Sands related, this museum is well worth a visit. Things for all ages including areas to dress your kids up in space gear. Imax style theatre showing a variety of space related programmes.

Traveling

By Ronald J |

What an enormous and awesome museum! Learned so much about our countries’ space program but also about how old space study is and all the people from all over that were involved!! Tickets were $8 for seniors and $6 for 13 year old. Exhibits were great. Although some of the interactive exhibits didn’t work - needed repair.
Had a lot of White Sands Missile Range projects, and NADA projects and construction and training exhibits. A really good do!!

Got Space!

By Sue M L T |

This is a great museum! Space history began in New Mexico starting with Robert Goddard in Roswell (no, no aliens) all the way to tests for the Space Program at Holloman Air Force Base.

A well spent 2h

By Kevin P |

The exhibits are pretty hands on too. You can dress up as an astronaut and have your picture taken as you walk on the moon! Also has a Star Trek exhibit which is pretty cool. And the outdoor display should be viewed too as it covers various designs from the V2 to the engines used in the Saturn 5 moon launch. Enjoy :)

Exciting

By USGMaestro |

Combined indoor and outdoor exhibits give a wonderful overview of both the history of space flight and New Mexico's important place in it. Definitely a must do stop in Alamogordo. The view of the Tularosa basin and Alamogordo alone is worth the time. Cannot wait to visit the IMAX.

Nice Museum if you like aerospace

By Gordon A |

This was a very in depth museum of the US Space program. It was full of information on all phases of US space exploration, including a couple booster rockets and a space capsule. There was even a Star Trek display! We really enjoyed a couple hours here.

Fascinating place loaded with history of space exploration..recommend the package for the best 3xperience

By Jeff smith |

Wonderful little musuen dedicated to space exploration..complete with images films..strongly suggest getting the package and viewing films.
Suggest story of burn veterans be includrd..not everything at white sands wS successful

good museum just a little short of exhibits

By ian a |

well laid out museum with great stuff outside to see, especially the sled run, inside was a little sparse on quality exhibits, but good value

Worth a Visit

By grits4 |

This museum was different from others we have visited. The missile exhibits make a visit to White Sands National Monument more meaningful. There are renovations that will allow for more exhibits in the future. Our 4 year old grandson enjoyed hands on exhibits, including posing in front of a lunar landscape wearing a space suit, complete with boots, gloves, and helmet.

An interesting stop in Alamogordo

By catem |

We were pleasantly surprised at the scope of this museum. We were fortunate to have a great tour by one of the volunteers. Really interesting exhibits and a nice view over Alamogordo and White Sands.

The history of the space race in one spot!

By Steven O. Sellers |

The museum of space history and space hall of fame are all in one beautiful building in Alamogordo at the edge of the New Mexican desert. If you are a baby boomer who grew up in the space age, and remember names such as Alan B. Sheppard and John Glenn you will really enjoy this facility. Many great exhibits inside and outside the building. Be sure to visit the IMAX Theater and planetarium on the grounds.

Be sure to check out the Space Museum

By Jim M |

Four floors of artifacts from the space industry, including real moon rocks, even a part of the Apollo 13.

Loved it

By Danielle W |

Great way to get out of the sun! Spent three hours here with my 3yo. Loved it. Great indoors and out. There is even a little playground outside. Lots of stuff for kids to climb on and interact with

Thorough but a tad static

By Sandy S |

This museum lacks the interactive pop and pow of the Johnson Space Center in Houston, but it does a good job ob walking visitors through the development of the space program in the US and elsewhere. Visitors take an elevator to the top floor and then follow ramps from one thematic level to another. The corridor walls bear photos and brief bios of individuals involved in space -- members of the International Space Hall of Fame. The exhibit on the use of rockets in war is particularly interesting. Despite its subject, this is a rather old-fashioned museum, with very little opportunity for interactions, such as simulated landings of spacecraft. The museum is worth a stop if you're in the area to see White Sandy or if you want to learn about individual astronauts and scientists.

Beautiful scenery

By Ninny Ebaum |

This museum is set up in the hill and has lots of windows to view nature and overlook the city. Lots of information on New Mexico's involvement with the space race. There is some construction on one level and a few exhibits have seen better days and need some dusting. Nice display for Star Trek fans, but only a few hands on activities for kids inside. Outside is a great playground and a cool rocket garden.

Good diversion from the heat dome outside

By CalifCar |

We mostly went in here to avoid the 100+ temps outside. This is a relatively small museum that may be more interesting if you hadn't been in a space museum before. We saw two of the IMAX shows that were in a separate building from the museum and required walking two levels down outside. One was on astronaut training and the other, the Serengeti. Both were fairly interesting but not outstanding.

Well worth the admission

By Robin V |

This is a great little museum. It was very informative and well organized. Loved the fact the it was well played out over 5 floors.
There is a great floor for kids too.

Great museum

By hlg60 |

We love museums, so this is a definite yes! New Mexico has a really interesting background in science and space history. We spent the whole day in this museum, not everyone goes as extensively through museums, but it is definitely worth seeing. I also went to the planetarium show and a movie, I wouldn't do those again, the planetarium show was just okay & the man speaking had an unusual voice that was kind of irritating. The movie was slightly better, but I still wouldn't spend anytime there again. Other people may like that part, it just wasn't for me.

Interesting Museum

By mumbleboe |

Interesting Museum with many portraits with information on many people. Was surprised with the Star Trek exhibit. Nice static displays outside. Normal price is $8. /Adult. It didn't take very long for us to go through.

Nice stop if visiting White Sands

By J N |

We stopped in here on our way to White Sands. It's a nice little museum especially given the price of admission. There is a lot of information, pieces of space history, and some hands on displays.

Some interesting info

By gdel64 |

Have been to better museums but non that try so hard. They also have movies played on huge screen don't miss at least one of them.

Some interactive exhibits

By Susanne P |

My favorite part about our visit was the interactive exhibits where you could land (or crash) the shuttle, dress up like an astronaut for pictures, etc. It was also interesting to read about the individuals who were in the hall of fame.

Don't miss this museum

By Judi W |

This is a fantastic museum that most people don't know about. It's full of everything space related - they even have a Star Trek exhibit! This is an unusual museum as you take the elevator to the top floor and walk your way down. It's an easy walk with benches to sit and rest if necessary. They also have a lot of fun things for kids, including an outdoor play area. Make the time to visit this museum, you won't be disappointed!

Great museum in the right place

By DWOBOB |

This is where it all started so what an appropriate place to have this museum. This was fourth place on trip that we used our museum membership to get free admission. Without the membership we might not have visited this well done attraction
Great view of city from museum grounds.

A wonderful 'blast from the past' regarding the history of space travel.

By JANNINE S |

We were there in the middle of the week with some updates and tours. We heard many languages spoken as we 'self guided' through the displays. We especially enjoyed the nod to Star Trek.

Excellent collection

By Jen |

We had this in our schedule to visit, but were unsure of its calibre. It had a nice lay out. They are renovating some displays but that did not take away from the experience. We really enjoy museums and so spent longer than most would; however, the average family would spend 2 hours. The displays had enough detail for those interested in reading it, but were visual enough for those casually interested. Lots of variety including a cool Star Trek (Gene Roddenberry) exhibit. Play area for small kids at the end. Outdoor area has great displays, and has playground for children. Worth checking out if you have time.

Not Worth a Stop

By Sal_Paradise767 |

I understand they're renovating right now but even so this museum is not worth visiting. They charge $8 to see very limited exhibits many of which are currently closed. The outdoor rocket park is nice but very little inside grabbed my attention. I wouldn't be back.

Well Organized, Educational, Interactive

By JerryH9905 |

October 10, 2016 - After arriving at our hotel, we decided to visit the NM Museum of Space History before venturing to White Sands National Monument for sunset. The museum sits on a hill and has several interesting outside exhibits as well as inside. If you want to see the IMAX movie, there is an extra fee. The movie subject changes.

On the third level, there is an interactive exhibit that allows a person to try landing a spacecraft. It is very interesting. And, on the lower level, there are space suits that adults and children can put on and take a picture in on the moon's surface with the Earth in the distance.

The exhibits are well organized and show a very good history of the development of space travel. One section had pictures of the various astronauts and even showed how Disney contributed to space history.

It was an interesting visit although we did not have time to see the IMAX movie.

Interesting museum

By AleciaLester |

Nice area for space fans to explore. We had teenagers with us and they really enjoyed it, as well as us adults.

Very intersting museum worth the time

By Roxyrobyn |

The museum is in a nice setting with beautiful views to the west.
The Museum is laid out really great for handicap people to visit.
You take the elevator to the top of the building and can view each floor. At the end of your tour of each floor you take a ramp to the next lower floor. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to push my Husband and his wheelchair around each floor and to the next floor down. Usually it is hard to hold the chair back going down the ramps, but the ramps here were really handicap friendly.

Each floor of the museum has a specific topic / time frame of space travel it address.
My husband loved the entire Museum. There were plenty of interactive exhibits to keep the grandkids attention.

The last level to go through was recognition of Movies and directors that have enhanced our study of space. There were write ups, movie blips and displays to showcase the movies. Also there was a lego display of a Star Wars ship my 9 year old grandson went nuts over.

All in all I would say the Museum has enough range of interest to keep a family occupied for 3 to 4 hours with out being totally boring to the kids, and enough information to keep the 84 year old ex lab worker fascinated.

It was also a great break from the sun at White Sands.

Great kid friendly musuem

By Hellobrownlow |

We had lots of fun at the museum with our whole family, including littles! The museum features loads of space history and interactive exhibits.
It is four stories that you start at the top and work your way down. The ramps from level to level make it easy to navigate a stroller or wheelchair.
The front desk and admissions workers could be nicer and not play on their phones but other than that it was great!

Quick museum trip perfect for younger kids.

By LeeAnn S. |

Fun museum to spend an afternoon with young kids if you’re in the area. Only need a couple of hours. Well maintained and friendly staff. Recommend for an afternoon activity after a morning at White Sands. Be sure while you are here to stop by and see the Worlds largest pistachio and get yourself some Pistachio ice cream!

Nice Museum, Very Informative

By Traci M |

Took my grandkids ages 5, 9 & 11. Sadly not many people know about this place.
There are 4 floors. You take the elevator to the top then work your way down using ramps. There are plenty of exhibits including interactive. The 2nd floor is all about the kids. They can dress in space suits, play the astronaut space game, or build space shops with a table full of legos.

It doesn't end there.
Outside there are more exhibits, a memorial garden and playground.

A second building with the dome theatre and classrooms. We watched Apollo 50 there.

Grwat Visit ... everyone had fun.

Brings back memories

By Chim M |

Many items to view outside without even going into the museum. Brought back childhood memories. Especially like the "talking disc".

great displays!

By sunflower48 |

Great variety of displays, done in a beautiful building and surrounding area. The view from the area is nice as well. We were glad we stopped in.

Fascinating chronology of space travels

By Nostalgiyeah |

The State of New Mexico has thanks to its geographical advantages and suitable terrain, provided significant contributions to American space and warfare advances. This museum does a good job of chronicling that. Exhibits are laid out over four floors. The tour is self guided. The exhibits are nicely arranged and explains the space race that started post World War 2. There is a space shuttle simulator inside, where you can attempt to land a space shuttle. There are pieces chronicling US and Soviet space explorations and the contribution of the Alamogordo area institutions. The short video of HAM, a chimpanzee Americans launched to space to study the impact on human body is interesting. Equipment used by astronaut and Ham are on display as well. The museum is also home to the International Space Hall of Fame, a plaque of information about every inductee adorns the various areas of the building.
Outside the museum is located the John Stapp Air and Space park. This hosts some very interesting equipment like an F1 rocket engine, world's first Surface-to-Air missile (Nike Ajax), a test module for Apollo Launch Escape System, a replica of Apollo Command Module etc.
There is a planetarium adjacent to the museum itself which has shows throughout the day. Tickets need to be obtained at the museum itself. The planetarium also hosts some interesting satellite imagery from remote sensing satellites and demonstrate how space technology is useful in studying human activities and impact and thus can aid policy making.
This museum complex has plenty to keep kids and adults involved. The time spent can vary, I ended up spending over 3 hours since the exhibits really piqued my interest!

Great place

By Tom C |

Good reminder of how hard 'conquering' space was. Don't forget to use your membership at a science center back home to get free admission.

Wonderful

By johnDArizona |

What a surprise to find this quality of a museum in Alamogordo. Learned a lot well put together displays...

A bit stale

By CS-cali |

Browsing this museum was an OK way of sitting out a rainstorm. However, the place is very retro - don’t expect a snazzy high-tech museum experience. The exhibitions are a bit jumbled and the building works in various places don’t help the vibe (though I appreciate they’ll result in a better product down the line). I learnt a few interesting things but was in and out in about an hour.

An history review

By Robert F |

We visited this very modern museum of space history. It was greatest to review the space history that thrilled us in our lifetime. A wonderful museum for children. We saw a good number of younger visitors delighted with the models and hands on exhibits.

Good stop for kids

By randy k |

Good exhibit most of it was training mock up. But good history of space travel. No where near to air and spacr in D.C. But not claiming to be. It's a good walk down space history lane

Very good space exploration museum

By phvi2617 |

This is a nice museum about the history of space exploration, with a special focus on local contributions to the space program. It's not a huge place, and one of the floors is being renovated, but the exhibits are fairly well done, and they have a nice collection of artifacts.

The planetarium show is in a separate building, and it was just okay. Outside, there are some aircraft on display as well as the grave of Ham, the space chimp. Admission is very reasonable, and if you're a space enthusiast in the area, it's well worth a visit.

Living History of the Space Program.

By Nancy H |

The New Mexico Museum of Space History is for all ages - having seen the landing on the moon in 1969 and the progress since then, this place is an excellent reminder of how far we have come in the Space Program. Activities for the kids as you finish the walking tour.... their can try on space uniforms! Great time for photos!!

Very good rainy day activity

By Jonathan J |

Four floors of exhibits-- or actually 3. You ride to the top of the elevator and then walk down. Neat idea actually. Very nice views of mountains (or would be if it weren't raining). One floor on rocketry, one on living in space, and one on Gene Roddenberry and the contribution of Star Trek. The last was a "space suit try on". Actually they weren't space suits but jump suits and toy helmets. Anyway little kids would like. Many kid friendly activities. My favorites: the art work by NASA artist (didn't know they had NASA artists) and the Roddenbery tribute which was really fun. Do not think anyone who isn't interested in space studies would like this all that much. Inexpensive, imo.

Very informative about rocket history

By Mighty_Road_Warrior |

We were looking for a place to kill a few hours while nearby in Cloudcroft. This museum fit the bill nicely. The rocket park outside is best done early in the day before it gets stiflingly hot. The exhibits inside do a good job of explaining the history of rocketry and those who contributed to it. Their Hall of Fame is also quite interesting to browse. Kids will love it as well as adults.

Lots of fun

By maxellute |

Even for those who aren't techies, this is lots of fun! Interesting history, interactive activities (fly the space shuttle!), well-done displays.

Further Out of This World

By Linda C |

Don't let this sleeper on the hillside pass you by. There are so many cool exhibits indoors and outdoors. The view alone from the parking lot is amazing. Definitely watch the two movies in the theatre. Give yourself a couple of hours minimum to see everything.

loved it!

By JCroz |

No let downs here - everything I expected and much, much more. Info about space, about rockets and missilles, about people. All well executed and beautifully presented. Exhibits, pictures, videos - so much. Could have spent several more hours here!....Should be a "must see" on everyone's bucket list. Sadly we did not have time to visit the planetarium and see any of the movies but if they are of the same quality as the museum itself, it should be amazing as well. Yes, my husband crashed the shuttle, too, but he had fun trying to land it anyway......not just for kids, that's for sure.

Poor customer service - beware of purple-haired lady.

By Anita M |

My wife and I visited on Oct 9, 2017 at about 1PM. Our visit started with a skirmish with the purple-haired lady selling tickets at the museum. I had researched the website previously and knew that two senior combo tickets to the museum, movie, and planetarium should have been $24. I was charged $28. I asked the lady to explain the increase in price and she threatened to charge me an even higher price by "removing my combo discount". She was very rude. It was apparent that she would have rather been somewhere else that day. I let it go and we went on to visit the museum.

We were scheduled to see a movie at 2PM. We went back to the purple-haired lady and asked where the movie was. We were told it was in a different building. It would have been nice if she had told us that when we bought the tickets. Or the museum could provide a small informative handout or some signs with this information. She acted like we should have known this but we are from Texas and this is our first(and probably last) visit to this museum.

We found the movie in another building and saw signs saying that their premier projection equipment was broken and they would be using an inferior portable system. A sign said they were charging half price for movies and planetarium because of the inferior equipment.

At the end of the movie and planetarium we went back to the purple haired lady in the museum. I had noticed that she seemed to have charged us for three people instead of two for the museum. She admitted she messed up and refunded us 4 dollars. I then asked about the half price movie and planetarium tickets and she would not honor that because it would require reprogramming the computer which she could not do. I feel as if we were ripped off.

I would avoid this place until the equipment is fixed and beware of the purple-haired lady if and when you visit.

Very nice museum

By Larry R |

This is a wonderful museum and the views of the valley are great. This museum shows the progress of the space race. The exhibit's are laid out very well as well as all of the photos of the men who were a part of the space program.

the best history of space display i've ever seen!

By Margi M |

their space hall of fame which wraps around all of the displays, really tells the tale -- from copernicus to garrett, from galileo to elon musk, the heroes of space and their contributions to our collective achievements are laid out in a wonderful spiral display. this museum must have a lot of really good friends because they have more cool rocket and space stuff than anyone. they also focus on exactly their specialty. unlike the smithsonian air and space museum in d.c., this museum isn't distracted by the pantheon of all flight. this is about space. rockets. exploration. what's out there.
they even have a flight simulator for landing the space shuttle. practice before you go. i flamed out terribly, but as with all of the interactive attractions, i'd like another try at it.

Jewel in the State!

By Katherine2204 |

This Space History Museum is a jewel for the state of New Mexico. Starting at the top for the oldest information and walking down each floor is a great way to present this historical information about the exploration of space in the United States. From the moon rock to the chimp space ship to the memory wall of space explorers. It was all great!

Interesting if you are into space stuff

By Nancy T |

Pretty interesting especially if you're into space things. If you're not this could be a little boring. It did tell a lot about local history of white sands proving grounds and Holloman Air Force Base and its connection to NASA. Cost was six dollars for people 60 and over

Very well done museum

By Carol F |

We really enjoyed the museum. The displays were well done and interesting. The Night Skies show in the planetarium was very disappointing and their projector was broken so we couldn’t see the other movies.

I love space history

By Jeff L |

I’m a total space nerd and space geek and Alamogordo is so clothe center of so much space history. Go and enjoy this museum. Then go out to White Sands.

Space...the final frontier

By Joel M |

This place will blow your mid with all of the space items here. From the earliest rockets to an actual space capsule it is here. A beautiful building atop a little hill. This place is amazing with all it has. Also, an IMAX is adjacent and you can view a space related movie. It is a neat experience. Many, many, many space related items to see, touch and even get into. A fantastic place.

Very interesting!

By Willywop |

I'm not a space geek - but I enjoyed this museum. Lots of information and interactive exhibits. My entire family enjoyed their visit.

Pretty neat place

By rdsm77 |

Not that huge of a fan of space history but thought I'd check it out. There were free rocket and missile exhibits outside. What I thought was a genius idea is inside you take the space themed elevator up to the 5th floor and work your way down. There were ramps down to the rest of the floors so it was very wheelchair accessible. Great view of the city. The trash cans were shaped like little red rockets!

The exhibits were all quite interesting. They had a Star Trek exhibit. Also some replicas of spacesuits used in tv and movies. Very few of my pics turned out since the glass exhibits have too many reflections. The second floor was full of kids stuff. Don't get on the machine that tells you what your weight is on Mars and the moon unless you want the entire room hearing how much you weigh on earth!!

The gift shop was small but had some neat stuff especially for kids. Some local jewelry as well.

Interesting Museum

By 234Glenys |

This was my husband's choice but I was pleasantly surprised by this visit. It is well organized, reasonably priced and contains information and displays to interest all age levels. Hands on displays were fun and the informational panels contained great info. The great models, artifacts and examples made air flight come alive. I enjoyed the many photographs and bio info on the many astronauts and educational leaders who helped to forge aeronautical history. There is an IMAX theater which we did not have time to visit. There is a great Star Trek section to enjoy as well. I would recommend this museum to all.

Interesting and little known facts found here

By vitaguy |

We honestly were looking to kill some time so we happened to stop on in and check this out. Glad we did!! This museum gave lots of info from space missions from years ago to present. It was fun to see how things have evolved. If you have any interest in space this is your place.

Hint.....cost is about $7 per person and takes a few hours to explore. Have fun.

So much space history

By Jay B |

So much space history. Who would have thought this little town of Alamogordo would have an offering such as this? Wonderful exhibits, AND an IMAX theatre for eye an opening experience in space. A MUST SEE!

Amazing history!

By QuiltingSisan |

My husband and I took our 9 year old grandson to this. The outdoor exhibits are fascinating. Indoors, the displays are top notch. There is an area where space suits are available for the kids to try on and take photos with a moon walk back ground. We had a great time here.

Boring

By delited |

We live nearby and have been quite a few times. It’s a shame they don’t offer nicer discounts for military and their family members because this is one of the only things to do in Alamogordo and it gets expensive visiting multiple times a year when we have friends and family venture out and visit us while we are stationed here.
It’s not very exciting for me, can walk around in less than an hour and see everything.

Interesting for space nuts and youngsters.

By ElliesBoo |

A friend had told u to visit this place and so we did. Outside, several rockets, engines and test vehicles stand, with labels, waiting to be viewed and photographed. Inside, 4 floors of space paraphernalia, uniforms, rockets and rocket controls, moon rocks, and lots more educate the interested visitor. One wonderful item that most people seemed to overlook is an ongoing film showing of films taken while various astronauts were in space. Parts are delightfully entertaining as the astronauts showed off the fun of weightlessness. And another was taken as these fearless adventurers descended onto the surface of the moon. Exciting stuff! Lovely experience. Recommend it.

Interesting

By Gilliedog |

Very good outdoor displays Inside renovations were being done to some with new displays being added. Themrenovation distracted from the overall presentation of the inside displays of the museum. The audio on the video displays was too low to,be heard. The IMAX theatre inside the building was showing a movie about China...nothing whatsoever to do with space exploration. Very disappointing.

Very interesting

By SnapDragonfly |

We really enjoyed the exhibits here.

They have several interactive displays which were fun for children and adults.

They also have IMAX movies but we didn't have time to see them. Too bad because they looked interesting.

All in all a nice side trip.

Had hoped for more.

Way too much to read. A guided tour would be more informative. DO NOT go to top level parking if on a motorcycle. Would be nice to have designated parking for motorcycles.

Nice outdoor displays

By Steven P |

I went early in the day so I only had access to the outdoor displays but it was still well worth the effort to stop by.

Could use a face lift...

By Nicole A |

One of the great things about this museum is the quantity and quality of artifacts that they have available. But the whole place could use an overhaul. It is very informative but could use more interactive exhibits.

Fun trip down memory lane

By travellustinggirl |

We were in Alamogordo for a conference and had a free afternoon. As we grew up in the 60’s it was very entertaining to reminisce the space race we grew up knowing. The only downside was a large family who allowed their children to run loudly up and down the ramps and blocking the exhibits. I did not see any museum employees monitoring the rooms. Worth the effort and the views.

Dissappointed

By jackieschaab |

We decid3d to stop and see this before we headed for White Sands National Monument . Was really looking forward to it . The Alamogordo travel flyer stated it was opened everyday except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Well , we went on a Tuesday ,only to find the gate closed with a sign that they were closed Tuesdays ☹️.

Very nice....

By MidloMom75 |

My husband and I, along with our Airman son, visited this museums this weekend. It was very informative and interesting. They are doing some renovation, but it's not very intrusive. We visited the museum and went to the planetarium. We were very delighted when the nice ladies at the desk where you pay, informed us that the museum was free from Memorial day to Labor day for service men and women and their families.
The museum also have a couple interactive displays along with a very cute photo op complete with costumes.

Fun place to spend an hour or two

By familytraveler455 |

This is a bit out of the way but we went to white sands so we continued our drive to go here. I am not especially interested in space but the kids and my husband liked it. It’s a bit dated but had good information and displays.

Cool if you really like space exploration

By Jim L |

Most of the exhibits require reading the descriptions which is fine for dad but not for young boys. I grew up in Houston with friends at NASA so I knew some of the people in the exhibits but my boys were not so excited to have to read. There are a number of display items that do not require reading but not as much as young boys would like.

Learned a lot

By ALMink49009 |

This museum exhibited a few rockets at the entrance. Having never been to a rocket launch and seeing the size of them this was very enlightening. This brought back a lot of memories.

Interesting but will wait for updates

By Babu2773 |

We were here many years ago and decided to return. They are in the middle of refurbishing the museum, which is a good idea. Many exhibits seemed tired and outdated, and while this is the location of the Space Hall of Fame, we were really more interested in science. We will return when the updates are complete, but for $5, it was an okay experience.

Being Remodeled

By MissMem |

The museum sits high on a hill and beckons you to come visit. There's an outdoor area with rockets and gizmos. Indoors, there's a lot of construction and remodeling going on. We did get to see some interesting things, but in no way does this compare to the bigger science/rocketry museums. Admission was $5. We do not know if that was a special rate because of the remodeling.

Great Family Experience!

By KyleBMan |

This museum is a treasure in Alamogordo. A great place for families to spend an afternoon. So much history here in the basin. You and your family will have a great time at this museum. Highly recommended!

Neat Place

By charlottem |

This museum is a good way to spend a couple of hours. We enjoyed out tour of the museum as well as the live star presentation. My favorite part was trying to land the Space Shuttle on a simulator, I could have spent all day trying.

Great Outdoor Exhibits, Great View!

By TNKaz |

We spent about 2 hours at this museum. Even though most museums I recommend for a rainy day – not this one. You want a nice weather day to enjoy all the great outdoor exhibits. And don't miss the Daisy Track exhibit, which is in a separate area to the right of the museum. Inside the museum, everyone – kids and adults – really enjoyed the launchpad exhibit where you get to feel the vibrations of various rockets lifting off. Some of the exhibits were a bit too technical for me, but I'm sure space history buffs would really enjoy this museum. Even if you don't go in this museum, I recommend driving to the parking lot to see the great views on a clear day. The museum is at a beautiful location at the base of the mountains and overlooking Alamogordo. You can even see the dunes at White Sands. Great View!

Modern and Well Laid Out

By RecreationV |

Great presentation of our (USA) history and efforts to go into outer space. The Space Race, the challenges and accomplishments are presented in an informative manner with interactive opportunities along the way. The museum contains the International Space Hall of Fame: inductees pictures line the walls with their personal/historic information. You can easily spend more than 2 hours at the museum, reading and watching the videos; and half a day at least if you want to go to the Planetarium and IMAX movie too. A walk through the museum ends with a fun Star Trek experience and exhibit and then an opportunity to try on a space suit that is worn by the astronauts. (various sizes available)

Interesting but dated

By paul e |

The museum had interesting articles but too reminiscent of older museums with too many words and not enough activities .Many of the limited activities they had were not working This is the first AAA rated museum I have visited where I was disappointed

Nice small museum

By Jane_A60 |

We found this to be a nice small museum with lots of interactive activities for all ages. We enjoyed it especially because it talked about a lot of the astronauts we used to hear on the news as kids. We also liked the exhibits outside. Would recommend this museum.

Ok Museum

By Lisa A |

This was a good way to spend a couple hours. We enjoyed the National Parks movie at the IMAX, and then spent 2 hours in the museum. The exhibits seem very disorganized ... seem to ramble from one topic to another with no clear pattern of events, which was confusing. There was a lot of heavy reading involved - in many cases, it seemed like almost too much information, even for interested adults. We did have fun playing with some of the "kid" exhibits, as we were pretty much the only ones there on a weekday morning. They even had adult size spacesuits we tried on, although they were sorely in need of some basic repairs ... one was so ripped apart it was impossible to even put on. Not sure the museum would keep the attention of many kids. (The IMAX screen was an odd one - it was domed, rather than the typical flat screen, and was actually difficult to watch because you had to crane your neck.)

particularly rich and well documented

By globtrotteuse |

A particularly rich and well-documented museum in which you could practically spend a full day!

Different attractions at one "space"!

By KEZC29 |

Our first visit to this great place of history!
Make sure to visit all of the buildings since each one has some pretty interesting and educative areas! We started at the IMAX movies (blue building) and the experience was great, both of the movies were good, and they offer several ones! Then we went to the glass building and follow the directions to start at the 4th floor and follow the ramps down to enjoy all of the exhibits! It is so nice the this museum is right next to the Mountains and that you can enjoy views from all of the floors! Our kids had fun dressing and posing their walking in the moon as astronauts! The shop is small, but had nice gifts, too bad we didn't have time to shop, this time! And we couldn't enjoy the last building! Maybe, next time!

Well-presented and fascinating history of space travel

By Don K |

This Museum is also home to the "Space hall of fame" that celebrates the pioneers of rocketry and space travel, a fine IMAX theater and educational center, and many hands-on exhibits. It enthralled us for hours.

Plain, boring, a piece of history

By KenNewhouse1 |

I'm a big fan of space travel. I was looking forward to an exciting history lesson of the United States and world space exploration. The entrance fee is $7, but for a 30 minute tour, it's not worth it.

Excellent history of space program

By Mark H |

Really enjoyed visiting the museum and seeing all of the exhibits marking the progression of space exploration. Starting with early rocketry and proceeding through the space shuttle years, there are lots of interesting artifacts, exhibits and videos.

Great Museum of Space History !!

By DannyWasserman |

A great museum for a few hours on a Sunday to learn the growth of the space industry and the pioneers that came to life to create a legendary time and place in the USA.

Nice museum

By TracyM |

This was a great little stop. Lots of good history. Small enough museum to make it around fairly quickly. The outside actually had lots of cool airplanes as well in addition to a playground and some really nice views of the mountains and the town. Not super interactive for kids, but there were a few things that they found interesting. Would like to have had more time to read more of the information but kids kind of kept us moving quickly.

Fun Activity for Everyone

By LISA B |

We took our kids and niece and nephew to this museum. They are currently renovating parts, so some of the exhibits are closed.

The kids loved the shuttle simulator, launch videos where you can feel the rumble from the rockets, and the astronaut dress up area. Fun morning that kept the kids entertained and had them asking questions.

Cool stop when traveling

By Ariana G |

I won't say I would travel to visit this place specifically but when you travel with kids this makes a great stop so everyone gets to walk, stretch the legs and learn a bit while enjoying the A/C and exhibits the museum offers, my 8yr old was fascinated with it and us adults enjoyed it too :)

Museum

By robbiec49 |

We stopped here and spent hours as I enjoyed looking at the displays and reading about the history of space flight from its roots in ancient times.

Every American should get a good dose of the information in this museum.

By Radiohutch |

Lynn and I and friends recently toured the New Mexico Museum of Space History. A friend from Las Cruces suggested that this museum was a must see while in the Central New Mexico area. Admission was $7.00 each for Seniors and Military. The museum discovers just about everything about space exploration and has a gallery which includes photos of all of the Astronauts and a caption about their impact on the space industry. Actual and replica Missiles and rockets abound, both inside and outside. The location of the museum is convenient, but high on a mountain and offers great views of the space gear with the surrounding mountains and terrain in the background. It’s a great place for photographers.

Space history

By Chris H |

Over all the museum has a interesting collection of artifacts and info about everything space. The kids had fun with the simulator and the space suites. Museum was clean, and staff was friendly.

Streamlined

By nomuse2 |

There are some nice artifacts...a DSKY, a tribble, Ham's grave...and there is some documentation, but it is designed like the crown jewels at the White Tower; the building is a big spiral with high-flow corridors wrapping around so as to achieve the maximum no-stopping effect.

In a way the stuff outside was more impressive, and I look forward to when they finish making some nice displays for the stuff tucked in the shed around the Daisy Track.

Smithsonian Affiliate

By Wyocowgirl94 |

We have been to many NASA museum's and facilities, so I wasn't expecting much in New Mexico. I was wrong. This is a great museum that is affiliated with the Smithsonian. The exhibits were fun and informative and we really enjoyed out time there.

A really interesting and nice museum you should try to see in NM.

By boca m |

This was a really nice, interesting, museum! It was too bad that too many exhibits inside were still "closed" or not-working: COVID is LONG SINCE PASSED; fix these things NM; run the electric wires and plugs inside!!! There's also no discernible reason why ALL the outside, on the grounds, exhibits are closed off because they are doing some (slow n little) outside work on a small part of the outside grounds.

Family Fun

By Jessica W |

We had a great time here. There were even a few thimgs that our 2 year old enjoyed! Very educational. Older kids would probably enjoy it even more!

A lot of information and cool exhibits!

By kountrygurlla |

My husband is a huge space geek! He LOVED it. They were doing a lot of renovations which meant many of the exhibits were not open. Also, make sure not to to on a Tuesday as they are closed. We had a lot of fun, but I wish all of the exhibits would have been accessible.

Great place!!

By Matthew808 |

If you are interested in anything related to the space programs of yesterday, today, and tomorrow, you will enjoy the Museum of Space History. Many displays of rockets, missiles, and capsules are outdoors, and the history is indoors. A must for kids of all ages!!

Be sure to check this out

By c5mjb |

There is a lot to see here, and kids will love it, especially if they are science fans or STEM students. The elevator takes you to the fourth floor, and you just work your way down. Lots of things to see, interactive exhibits for all ages. I did a terrible job on the simulator, even though I used to own and fly an airplane. :) If you want to learn the history of space travel, this is a good place for it.

Good value for a few hours of enjoyment

By nctraveler112010 |

Lots of interesting exhibits although some are a bit outdated. Interesting planetarium shows. Great stop if you’re in the area and have a few hours to kill.

Time well spent!

By Erica S |

We went here with 2 kids (11 and 9) and we all really enjoyed it. For the 4 of us with the planetary pass (1 show in the planetarium) it was $36. We spent about 2 hours there. The main building is the museum and has 4 floors not including the ground floor which contains the gift shop. There is a ton of history in the building. You can learn all about how we made it into space and how it evolved over time. You will see many different types of space gear, shuttle and rocket parts. We all loved the landing simulator. It wasn’t that easy. There is also a space where you can feel what it feels like when a rocket takes off. You can test several different rocket types so you can feel the difference. There is a space to try on space suits but quite frankly they weren’t in good shape (dirty and ripped). We skipped that part. There are other rockets and engines outside as well. There is something called the Whisper Dish that was wild. You have two people standing pretty far apart from each other whisper into a ring and the person on the other side can hear it clear as day. We saw a Night Sky presentation in the planetarium and it was excellent. We’ve been to other similar offerings and this was by far the best. It was very detailed and showed you how to pick out the different formations at home. Well worth the time and money.

Great place for kids of all ages

By ann p |

This is a very hands on museum for kids of all ages. The setting on the side of the mountain and the view from the museum of the White sands area is beautiful. Our grandchildren, ages 7 and 9, were with us. There were so many interactive things for them to do. They really enjoyed it.
If you go to the museum, do not miss the G-force sled exhibit to the right of the main parking lot.
This is the burial site of Sam, the first money in space. There is a really interesting exhibit related to him inside. Out grandchildren wee fascinated by it all.

Good information

By Landa M |

Interesting history of space and rockets. Great place for kids. Enjoyed the movie “The Black Holes” Easy access and lots of rockets to see up close.

Interesting

By AJ. |

Nice historic atmosphere here. Interesting to learn about the local area and it’s role in our current defense and space programs. Small fees to see all the exhibits and we may have to schedule another visit to take it all in. Definitely worth a visit.

Enjoyed the New Mexico Museum of Space HIstory!

By JackTripper323 |

We loved the exhibits, the video presentation of astronauts on the moon (great for the conspiracy nuts), and especially the aircraft display outside. There were some cool surprises, like the Star Trek stuff, the simulator, the transporter room, Rocket Rumble, Astro suit tryon area for the kids, and info on all the great men and women who contributed to our space achievements.

Before we went in, we got tickets (costs extra) to the planetarium presentation of the stars. We sat there with a class taking a field trip, and other space enthusiasts. Very good presenter doing the talk while you looked up at the stars. Parking was a breeze, plenty of space. I would love to go again!

CLOSED on TUESDAYS

By RayneLa |

Just wanted you to know, it is opened six days per week but CLOSED on TUESDAYS!
We were driving from Sitting Bulls Falls to White Sands and wanted to see this place but it was closed. Will keep on our bucket list for the future.
The ratings is not accurate as we did not see the place. This is purely to prevent you from going on a Tuesday

Not enough time

By Josh24v15 |

We were unable to go to the museum, Imax, or planetarium due to time. We did go to all the outside exhibits (except Ham's grave) and they were fascinating. We wish we had had more time. Only have it 3 *'s because we didn't see it all.

You're in Alamogordo...Why not go?

By BeachChair |

Gives a good understanding of the science behind rocketry and worth 90 minutes of your time. Learned some things and had fun. How much more could you ask for?

Read fast

By Coolidgeadventures |

Kids age 3 and 6 years old love to walk as fast as possible to get to the last floor were they can build robots, dress in space suits and play. So if you as a parent can read fast or have a husband (like me) who loves to show off his reading skills you might be good to go. I would really like to see the kids display area spread out a station on each level were my kids can interact, color, build, dress up. One station per level so I can have more time seeing all the hard work that went into this museum. I really do like to bring the kids and it's a great place to escape the heat.

Well done but small by museum standaards

By Don49680 |

This is a modern 4 story structure that does charge a fee ($6 for seniors) to visit. A small gift shop on ground level and restrooms but no food or drink. You start on the 4th floor and work down. Exhibits are mainly geared to how New Mexico and the surrounding area of Alamogordo played a part in the race to space for the USA. Some exhibits exist outside the museum as well. The main attraction that we enjoyed was the Dome IMAX theatre just a short walk away. There is a fee for this as well but well worth it for the shows.

Space Museum

By Jayci M |

This museum is small, but awesome. My three-year-old loved it. It's nice to go for a day trip. They also have a pretty trail to walk right outside the museum. And if you go into town there's a small park with a toddler train ride. I loved it in Alamogordo.

Still lots of fun

By Teri C |

First went there as a kid, then again on my honeymoon 28 years ago. They have don a lot of updates since then. My daughter really enjoyed it. Husband and I enjoyed the Star Trek section a lot. Plus lots of education on our space program.

Trinity Detonation Trip

By Stuart B |

Took the twice-yearly Trinity Trip through the museum. What a great day. The Director of the Space History Museum was our guide. Very engaging and informative about the history of the Trinity Detonation and the history of the US Military in the Alamogordo Area. The day passed too fast, as we were immersed in facts about the early American Nuclear Program. Very thought inspiring.

It is a good place to visit

By Larry |

I went up and checked it our, it was interesting to see the different displays they had on site. they were layed out very interestingly, you ride the elevator to the top floor and wander your way back down on a incline ramp, quite a bit of stuff for kids to do also.

Great Place!

By Star B |

Great place to learn things about our space program in the past. Also they have a IMAX Theater which they show a 40 minute movie on our National Parks & a 40 minute movie about our Air Force carriers. Very interesting place could spend all day there.

Not bad, not grear

By Chimpy28 |

Not bad for a visit, and good views over the town. Film in the planetarium was good, but the displays are a bit 'wordy' - too much reading on the walls and not really much to look at.

New Imax Theatre Presentation Journey to Space

By rosemariebabyboy |

Was disappointed that we could not pay for our IMAX
Theatre tickets at the IMAX Theatre but had to go all the way up to the Space Museum to do so. Preferred the old way of paying for tickets at the theatre itself. Also expected a lot more out of the new theater projection show. Even though the pictures were clearer and more defined, we were disappointed with the Journey Into Space showing.

Nerd Paradise

By Joline A |

Actually the museum was fun and interesting to me also, but the family nerds were in their happy place. I love the views and architecture. Trust me Mr. Desert Rat knows his space history and not once did he call out a mistake.

A 4 year old boy (??) Was enjoying the experience. I liked how they honoured the ancient men for their contributions. Looked at everything, took two hours. Well worth the trip.

You need to go here!!

By frankacosta2002 |

4 Story museum with lots of cool displays. Small kids will love this place, interactive stations on the different levels. Big area on one floor where the young ones can dress up like an astronaut!! Planetarium also on property with different shows at the top of every hour. Lots of large displays out front.

Too oriented towards school field trips

By Rick B |

A lovely site with some interesting aspects, but seems to be best catered to school field trips. There was an excellent display about Star Trek. The hall of fame portion, as well as seeing the gravesite of Ham the space chimp were interesting.

Small, But High Quality and Kept Up-to-Date

By bb2527 |

I was here 15 years ago when my kids were young so it was fun to come back with other young family members. I was so pleasantly surprised. The exhibits had obviously been updated and kept current. This is a small museum but is very well done--the kids especially enjoyed the vibrating floors (simulating diff types of rocket launch) and the astronaut dress-up area! The Space Hall of Fame displays are integrated throughout and keep all of the plaques from being overwhelming (as they would be if presented all at once). A gem of a small museum!

Nice space museum

By pat l |

This is a nice little museum. It was set up well so that you ride the elevator to the top and then walk down ramps as you see the exhibits. There were good displays and information, but many of the interactive displays were out of order or not working properly. We spent about an hour here - we had a few space nuts with us, but also some who are tired of visiting every space museum in America.

Well Worth A Visit

By William M |

If you are interested in the history of rockets or space flight history, this museum is a “Must See”.

This museum is located on the hillside on the Eastern side of Alamogordo, overlooking the town of Alamogordo & Holloman AFB in the distance to the west. It is very easy to find, just follow the signs. There is plenty of parking space, checkout the website for the latest admission prices.

Outside the main building you will find the “John P Stapp Air & Space Park”, named after the fastest man alive. Col Stapp rode the Rocket Sled that achieved a speed of 632 MPH. At the other side of the main building you will find the “Daisy Track”, named after the “Daisy Air Rifle” it was an air powered sled on a track, designed to test the effects of acceleration & deceleration on the Human Body. There is also a full size mock up of the X37. It is a “Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory Simulator”. The X37 was designed for the capture and deployment of satellites with a rapid turnaround at much less cost that the convention way of deployment. In the “Air Park” there a lot of other exhibits, from small to very large rockets and jet engines, A Mercury Capsule, X-7A Test Vehicle, the remains of an actual WWII V2 Rocket that was test fired at White Sands Missile Range, there is even a full size “Little Joe 2”, this rocket was used to test the Apollo Series “Launch Escape System”, it is also the largest rocket ever fired from New Mexico. Just outside the main doors you will find a Lockheed F-117A cockpit mockup “Ingress & Egress” Trainer, There is a metal mockup of an “Apollo Command Capsule”, it is known as a “Boilerplate”, this one was used to trail Army & Navy Capsule Recovery Personnel, and you haven’t even got into the main building yet.

Inside the main build there is even more to see and lots of information. The Ladies at the ticket desk will give you a lot of information as well. We started the tour at the top of the building, the elevators are fun the with the sights and sounds of “Star Trek”, I must admit, it is the best elevator I have ever used. There are a lot of exhibits from the early days of rockets right thru to the modern era. There are real and mockups of missiles, suits that have actually flown in space, models of various satellite’s, various components of the guidance systems of different types of rockets, some of the communication systems and other electronics, All the exhibits have information boards. There are even space suits of every size so that children, no matter how small, can dress up in a space suit and have their pictures taken. One thing that we found great fun was the chance to have a go at flying the space shuttle and landing it at Kennedy Space Centre. It took me 2 attempts, but I made it! I have included a picture of the simulator screen in this review, just to prove I did it!

As you walk down one of the walkways, you will find one wall has been turned into The International Space Hall of Fame, it has pictures of, and information about, all the people from around the world who have made a major contribution to the quest for space exploration. Once again there is a lot of information and for anyone interested in history, there is a lot for you to learn, just by reading this wall.

We had a great time here, I recommend you checkout the website to get the latest information, because as we were leaving we were told that the Museum is due to be expanded and have a lot more exhibits and things to do.

Nice building, mediocre displays

By Geopiggy |

This state museum has a great location in a nice building with incredible views of the valley. However, we had higher expectations for the displays.

Hidden Historic Gem

By Malcolm S |

I am someone who likes to visit the off beat and hidden gems in any given area (this definitely qualifies). This is a museum that has different artifacts and exhibits that detail space travel. Although this museum was under upgrades (as of June 2017) I'm sure that it will be a fantastic visit once they are completed.

Incredible Collection of Space Memorabilia

By DOFlightSurg |

I was very impressed with all this place had to offer. From the rockets, capsules and tracks outside, to the interesting, detailed and informational exhibits inside, there is a lot to check out. Would definitely go again to see what they have on the floor they are currently refurbishing. However, even with one floor under construction, there is still a lot to check out.

5 floors of exhibits

By Nicole L |

This museum has you start on the top floor and work your way down. There is also exhibits to see outside.

The highlights for us were the rocket science floor and the outdoor exhibits!

Very interesting museum of space history

By JeroenandNancy |

Very interesting museum of space history. Lots of things going on: movies, interactive programs, real aircrafts, space outfits etc. Worth a visit.

Worth the trip

By JuniorByrdmann |

Well worth the price of admission. Rather than the typical static displays of only the most "famous" pieces, the layout tells the story behind man's travel into space, including the development of rockets, guidance systems, engines, etc. Be sure to walk around the grounds and see displays of equipment that ultimately lead to man's walking on the moon. The most interesting part is that almost all of the equipment was used at the nearby White Sands Missile Range and/or Holloman AFB. Quite an array of hardware with very interesting stories.

Good history of space exploration and rocketry.

By mailstop |

Models of experimental and standard spacecraft (this is not the White Sands missile museum). Anyway, we remembered many of the display descriptions like the Apollo and Mercury missions, the early astronauts, etc. I thought there was entirely too much space and recognition given to Star Trek history. In my opinion, Star Trek.is not much better than Lost in Space, and neither was superior science fiction.

Too Many Exhibits Closed

By Keith K |

We've been here before and enjoyed our visit; however, this time three of the floors were closed for new exhibits, which is at least half of the museum. Many of the indoor and outdoor exhibits are beginning to show their age, and some of the interactive exhibits were broken. We would have appreciated a sign indicating that half of the museum was closed before paying our admission.

Still magic. Still kept up very well

By KerrvilleGhost |

The displays are limited by our own surrender of the space race. The theater and presentations are good (ok stellar). The museum sits impressively on the hill. Avoid the relief route and take time to be the spaceman once more. Or spacewoman.

Highly recommended for adults and kids

By TimWandMelG |

The New Mexico Museum of Space History is a museum and planetarium dedicated to space flight and the space age, incorporates the International Space Hall of Fame and contains probably thousands of artifacts and displays both inside and out. I spent a couple of hours here initially taking photos of the vehicles and exhibits outside the main buildings including the final resting place of Ham, the first chimpanzee to fly into space. Seeing the Apollo rocket motors and an F117 nighthawk up close was an amazing way to start the visit. The museum itself is incredible being a perfect blend of education and entertainment. The exhibits really are fabulous, really well presented and laid out with just enough information of each to impart information without becoming boring. I started at the top of the building and worked my way downwards ending at the gift shop. I’m a big space buff and found this to be a really worthwhile way to spend a couple of hours. Highly recommended for adults and kids.

Cool small museum

By Reisefee12 |

If you have the change when you are in Alamogordo be sure to stop here. Entrance is 7$ per adult and I think it's worth it. They have nice exehebition from the spec science.

Hidden gem of a museum

By OVAZ5 |

What a hidden gem! It's about a 1-2 hour museum and very interesting and fun to go through. It's great for kids but interesting enough for adults. I recommending stopping here if you are anywhere nearby.

Good basic coverage of space flight

By Lynn Z |

This museum needs a bit of updating, hence the 4 not a 5, but overall, well worth the visit. They focus mostly on American spaceflight, of course, but also give homage to the Russians who have pioneered in space as well. They also devote one section to Start Trek and even have recipes from various characters of the show.

Fun and learning and shopping

By Beth I |

Awesome indoor and outdoor exhibits. Great family place. Also, good date place, public and inexpensive.

Cool Place

By ShakoNM |

Took my six year old nephew there was a Lego and planetarium thing that he loved. I've been here a lot of times with family visiting it's a good tourist spot. Would be cooler if they had restaurant with drinks or a bar with little rockets for umbrellas. 😃

Better than I could have imagined

By afcombatwxman2002 |

If you have ever had the slightest interest in aviation or space travel then I highly recommend this Museum. I never would have imagined there would be so much ACTUAL space history in one location, and the on location New Horizons theater has some pretty interesting movies/documentaries as well. The National Parks Adventure has even inspired the wife and I to undertake our own cross country expedition to explore the wonders of the national parks throughout our great nation.

Back to the moon

By Garysr B |

Saw the documentary "Back to the moon ". I was unaware of the contest generated by Google. Using new technology and reduced costs to get back to the moon.

Visit

By Susan D |

Lots to see here! 4 floors plus outdoors. IMAX was great! We saw 2 films. The docent at the museum was very interesting. Very nice gift shop too.

Wonderful Visit

By fortjoannez |

As you enter the elevator to up to the fourth floor, you are greeted by a great space mural. After the fourth floor, you follow ramps all the way to the first floor again. Lots of hands on fun and information.

Triple feature review

By Jennifer H |

We did the largest package with the triple feature. The museum part was ok, but it was under renovations. We enjoyed the films. We watched about the African animals and the one about from water to space for astronauts. The planetarium part about the stars was a little fast-paced. All, in all, glad we went but wouldn't go back.

Don't miss this one!

By Thunder600 |

If you haven't gone through this museum you are missing a lot! The history of space travel and other items like: moon rocks, Space suit, missile.... I really like the way one enters the facility. Once you check in at admissions, you take an elevator ride to the fifth floor and work your way down. Docents are on each floor for the questions you may have. Excellent place to get the history of space operations.

Worth the stop.

By Dnc6471 |

$7 adult entry fee and very informative and entertaining.
A lot of displays packed into the museum. Many hands on and informative. The Hall of Fame is really interesting because we could remember alot of the inductees.
We wish that we could have had time to visit the observatory/planetarium.

You will need more time!

By mtzennmaster |

Five floors of amazing history of space exploration and even a bit of science fiction too. We took the morning to explore the NM Museum of Space History and could have spent a lot more time. There were numerous interactive and simulation exhibits as well as artifacts from American, Russian (Soviet) and other countries engaged in rocketry and space exploration from the earliest to recent. There happened to be a Star Trek experience that I particularly enjoyed as well as an exhibit on science and science fiction that included a great collection of "space suits" from movies and TV. Try you hand on the jet pack simulator, fly (glide) and land the shuttle, and take the Lem landing challenge. Really great, engaging time. We will be back.

Alamogordo sighseeing

By M6350QVbenb |

You have to make the time to see the museum. We enjoyed everything about the trip. Can't tell enough people about this place. Go and I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Very well done

By 1989CAS |

My boys (23yrs) and (17yrs), my husband and I were very impressed with the lay out and props of this museum both inside and out. Well done! I would love to go back and I recommend it to any one. It's a must see!

Museum visit

By jennifernarcher |

We spent about 3 hours going through the 3 or 4 floors (not sure how many) of the museum. There was a lot of history and interactive exhibits. We were also able to see a show at the nearby IMAX theater. It was just across the street. The burial site of HAM is also located there. We're in our thirties and enjoyed our time there.

Museum and Space Hall of Fame

By Sue W |

The museum is dedicated to educating visitors in the history, science, technology and excitement of space exploration. It has a total of five floors. We started on the 4th floor and worked our way down the ramps. It was all very interesting and included icons of exploration such as a real moon rock. One exhibit showed how astronauts have adapted to the extreme environmental challenges of space travel. A new exhibit will soon open which focuses on satellites and GPS.

Different

By Ellen E |

Having only watched rocket launches on TV in the old days 😊 I found the museum very informative. They had a whole section on Star Trek and how it tied in with NASA they had a couple of areas that are interactive kids there loved it

Cool place!

By Lando G |

It was neat. When we went none of the simulators worked, and all the buttons you pushed to hear about the exhibit weren't working either. But it was still pretty cool. There is a great photo op where your kids can dress up like an astronaut, with a space background. My son liked it. Gift shop is pretty neat also, a lot of cool stuff in there.

Excellent museum with some unique displays

By Ricky Raccoon |

This museum was a pleasant surprise. The F117 training cockpit and the lower half of an original V2 rocket were of particular interest as outside displays. The inside displays were very well done. I have not seen anything like it outside of the US Air & Space Museum in Washington DC. Lots of early space flight exhibits including the Ham chimpanzee program.

New Mexico Mini Vacay

By Ashley B |

The cost of $8 was great for the quality of the museum. The information was very good, the displays were great. There are 5 levels to walk through. There are several areas of movies. There is an outside area of some displays. The planetarium was not open the day we came.

Impressive museum

By Scott's journey |

This is a must-see stop for anyone with an interest in the history of space exploration. The exhibits are numerous and very well laid out. You take an elevator to the top and then it's a very comfortable downward walk from there. You can see examples of both US and Soviet space equipment. Be sure to take a turn trying to land the space shuttle simulator. After spending time enjoying the inside exhibits, you can take an easy stroll around the outside to see more interesting exhibits. I particularly enjoyed the water sled building that explained this fantastic bit of space history very well. They do a great job describing the role that New Mexico and the local area played in the advancement of missiles and space testing.

Definitely worth the visit if you are in Alamogordo

By Michael G |

Very informative with interesting exhibits. Not so amazing that it needs multiple visits, but definitely worth the price of admission!

Fun for Space Enthusiasts

By Matthew G |

The museum isn't huge, but there's no shortage of interesting historical information and links to NM. Fun for adults and kids alike!

Great place to visit

By moondude46 |

The space museum is 5 stories high, with great family friendly exhibits and interactive displays. It is closed Tuesdays, so plan accordingly. The planetarium has shows daily. This is a great family trip. There are static, outside displays. Cost of films, at the planetarium, is extra

Interesting museum on space travel

By RobertSuzanne |

There are 4 floors with a wide variety of space related exhibits including an interactive space shuttle simulator which I was not able to get to land without crashing, a Moon rock brought back on Apollo 17, videos from the moon landings, a Star Trek space exhibit, and it holds the International Space Hall of Fame. We also dressed up as astronauts. The projector was broken so we weren't able to see the movie.

Interesting collections

By Donna A |

As former space industry workers we are always interested in space related museums. This museum has a diverse collection of early space memorabilia, including consoles, spacecraft instruments, ground equipment, and hardware such as rockets and high speed sleds. There is information about pioneering scientists, engineers, and astronauts in the International Space Hall of Fame.

Great experience!

By Gary W |

One of my stops was to visit this museum. The signs to find it were very readable. Separate buildings and distances between the Museum and Planetarium were a concerned for this person, who requires a cane and is not used to the heat of the area. Museum even has a moon rock from Apollo 17, that was picked up by New Mexican native Dr. Harrison 'Jack' Schmitt.

Go Early to See It All!

By John B Lewis |

A great museum! Lots of fascinating information, interactive things to keep your interest and a lot of information on the people who have influenced and contributed to space travel. We got there after lunch, so we didn't have time to see the Space Hall of Fame, or any of the movies. Start in the morning!

Beam me up Scotty!

By Deborah S |

I enjoyed trying to fly the shuttle😀 not much good at it though. Lots to see and the outside is great too!

Interesting Museum

By Kendot52 |

This museum is interesting. It has excellent displays and exhibits. Could use more interactive displays where children could manipulate objects. Otherwise, a worthwhile museum.

Great museum on space history.

By Matt G |

Loved this museum. We got the opportunity to see a night sky show in the planetarium on constellations. It was very neat. Be sure to check out the shuttle landing simulation.

International Space History interesting for all ages

By boomersmother |

We decided to visit this museum because of my husband’s desire as a youth to be an astronaut and his military experience in the Air Force. The drive up to the museum from the highway towards the mountain range was scenic and intriguing. When you get up to the parking and walk up to the building the views of White Sands Missile Range, Holloman Air Force Base and the surrounding area with Alamogordo residences are amazing! There are displays and a child’s play area out front to visit. There are at least 3 buildings to visit with movies, displays and interactive equipment to explore. The movie that we liked the best was the documentary of the Apollo 11 launch with Neil Armstrong’s crew and walk on the moon in 1969. We felt like we were right there with them. The planetarium discussion of the stars was right after that and was fun and interesting. There are 4 levels to explore including one level celebrating the Star Trek writer and production that inspires the positive side of Space Exploration even, today. We liked that the museum includes the International aspect of Space Exploration. Well worth the less than $15 each we paid for 4 hours of entertainment!

Great Science and Space

By Roger B |

This is great museum for space history. It has all the elements how space travel started and the history of space.

So-so experience

By Rob D |

We toured through the museum, which was set up very well with many interesting displays. Wish we had had more time here.
The planetarium however was another story. Poor quality graphics and mediocre narration. The Vancouver planetarium 30 years ago was far superior to this one!

A variety of information for all interests!

By Diane T |

We went to the museum after visiting White Sands so didn't have as much time as we wanted. My husband would have enjoyed more time there to explore all the exhibits. The museum has a lot of different information about space travel, rockets, and astronauts. There is a fun, interactive area for children.

Great Stop!

By DaleDale2 |

I had a couple hours to fill while waiting to make an appointment and have always wanted to swing by the museum. I was early so the actual building was closed but there are plenty of outdoor exhibits which you can tour without the facility even being open. I thought that was a great touch on the part of the museum. Thanks everybody for keeping these great pieces of history alive.

A must see for any space nut

By Don M |

A great IMAX movie, get times on line and arrange trip to Museum (in a different building with ticket office in Museum for both) great history with a small number of rockets (more at White Sands), but good coverage of manned flights.

Go here if you're in the area

By Damien D |

Stop by. Ham the space monkey, his suite, and capsule is here. Great for kids. Very interactive. Admission price was good. So much to learn.

A very interesting place to visit!

By Kimberley C |

I highly recommend visiting New Mexico Museum of Space History while in Alamogordo. There is so much to see, read and learn here. A very exciting place!

To the moon Alice!

By calderon2370 |

Cool little place to visit while in NW. This is not a very large place but has allot to see. You can easily spend a few hours here if you wanted. The facility has (if I remember correctly) 4 floors of exhibits. You start at the floor and walk your way down. Most displays are static but they do have some interactive displays as well. The outside is full of exhibits as well with a beautiful view. You will also find a cute gift shop inside. Plenty of parking and never crowded.

First visit

By John R |

Really well arraigned amazing displays and very educational. The walk through tour starts on top floor so you are always walking down and not up. Beautiful views nice arrangement in a progression of historical timeline. Outside displays were nice and museum even had a Northrop Radioplane Drone on display which was built and probably tested by my father.

Remember all steps in space

By 633philip |

You will find the place a little bit outside Alamogordo stuated on the hill side. It gives you a good impressions about all space activities of USA and Russia. Inside the building: an extensive explanation about all developments in space. Outside th building is an exposition of used space materials. If you have an interest in space activities this is a place to visit.

A trip to the newly refurbished IMAX theater

By E M |

An hour drive from home and took a friend along to view two of the current features at the New Horizons Dome Theater. We saw Aircraft and US National Parks. Each feature was about 40 mins.in length. Both were great but especially liked the National Parks film. Robert Redford narrates and the filming was breathtaking. Was sorry we didn't have time to explore the museum. Another time for sure.

So cool if you love space

By Coach Rene |

This is one of the coolest space adventures and is a place every kids should visit. See the history of the monkeys in space, see the slingshot 5 g test track for the astronauts back in the day, a planetarium and more. Interesting inside and outside- Tourist and locals should check it out!

Not an extremely large museum, but definately a must see if you appreciate science, space flight or military.

By bikinkawboy |

They have cool interactive activities, several aimed at small children. And yes, I wrecked the space shuttle I was trying to land. There's a really cool imax theater and interesting outdoor objects on display. When outside, you absolutely must check out the sound wave demo, whisper dish or whatever it's called. Plain amazing any way you look at it. Little kids will no doubt enjoy it.

Worth the drive to Alamo

By Lily W |

There’s a few interactive exhibits and space vehicles for the kids to touch. My kids (3 and 1) loved the astronaut dress up floor! Great value for the price. The only downside is the planetarium theater is down a long walk with lots of stairs outside, so it’s better to get in the car and drive down if it’s hot.

Give yourself time to see all the exhibits

By TitoRandy |

I was very impressed at the various exhibits, what I enjoyed was in the main building. I wish now I had arrived sooner so I had more time to see all the exhibits that are offered.

Good but some exhibits need a bit of a face-lift

By NearRadwell |

I visited this museum in October 2019. It was a good visit and I spent a good couple of hours looking around the main museum complex and rocket park.

At the time some of the galleries were undergoing a renovation - The spacesuits display area. However, a number of exhibits throughout the museum were poorly displayed with out of date information. Also several of the interactive exhibits were broken. So that was disappointing.

The museum is on the smaller side compared to other well known US space museums. But it does contain interesting information, especially about missile and rocket guidance systems.

I think it would be a good venue to take children for a couple of hours. There is a teaching/activity area where kids can dress up.

Overall I enjoyed the visit but rated the museum average as some care and attention is needed to repair/improve a number of the existing exhibits.

Very small compared to most space museums!

By Johnny |

4 story bldg with not much to see and do in it. Took about 1 hr to walk through the whole thing. Exhibits are small and lack information. Don't plan a whole day around this place

Great for Kids

By LynnC1983 |

We were not originally going to stop here, but when we saw how hot it would be at our next destination decided to fill the afternoon here instead. I was really pleased with the interesting and interactive displays. They had so many things that had my kids laughing and gave them a real feel for some of the history of space. Their favorites were the vibrating pad that let them feel the vibrations of different lift-offs and the simulators were they attempted to land the space shuttle.

Impressive

By Pauline M |

What a fun place for children and adults. Lots of interactive things to do inside and out. Very educational. Great view.

Very interesting.

By bassman3 |

Lots of information about the development of the space program and the people involved. A "don't miss" stop for a visit.

An interesting visit into space

By Toby G |

This smallish museum shows you things about the human race to space. From capsules to rockets to space suits, this museum is pretty nifty.
If you're in the area, I do recommend going there, it's pretty informative. If you get there on time, I also recommend going to see a movie in the planetarium.

out in space

By BarbaraV349 |

Great exhibits and lots of history. We were sooo glad we were able to go. And don't forget to stand on the interactive display of rocket blast offs!!! Feel what its like to blast off just like the Astronauts!!!

Great learning place

By Patricia |

Second time we’ve been here, lots of new stuff. Great for the kids and older folks. Enjoyed all the older items brought back good memories.

Glad we visited

By Baby77321 |

We enjoyed our time here. I liked how the museum was set up. The kids liked all the interactive exhibits. The IMAX movie was also very interesting.

Fun & Educational Science Gem

By wtexram |

Educational & fun place to learn about space. Star Trek homage a plus. I would say good for anyone above the age of 10. Younger than that may not understand the science. Visit may take 3 hours or more if you read everything on exhibit.

Very Interesting experience and educational

By TRAVEL4WORKPLAY2010 |

A really nice interesting experience and very educational. A nice relaxing way to spend a few hours. Our granddaughter thought it was interesting and enjoyed the models which helped to visualize the growth of space travel.

Good side trip to brush up on America's space program

By Robert X. Gonzalez |

This is a nice museum located in all places near where a lot of missiles were fired in the 1950's. Entrance for basic museum is $8 and they offer a military discount. The museum has a nice collection of artifacts and real items from the US and Soviet Space program. Not as much as I had expected, but nonetheless an outstanding place for young people to learn of America's achievements and for us older folks to appreciate what our parents did. Included are NAZI V2 gear, lockups of the Mercury, US Army missiles and various rocket engines. A small piece of the moon is also exhibited. Even Star Trek made it to this museum - a must for all ages. The sites gives a command view of the lower valley and Holloman AFB as well as surround mountains and is a sight to behold - very beautiful.

IMAX and Museum Were A Lot of Fun and Very Educational

By babymom2007 |

The first time I went to the NM Museum of Space History was last year with my child's school class. We went to the IMAX first and then up to the museum. We had a guide who was very informative, but even without a guide, everything is so well labeled that a person could learn a lot even on their own. I'm looking forward to going back sometime this year because since we were last there, they have upgraded the IMAX and have added a Gene Roddenberry tribute at the museum.

Expected More

By Todd B |

In all fairness, it looked like this museum was in process of a remodel, however, after visiting the outstanding missile museum at White Sands, I expected more.

There were a few nice exhibits, particularly the Gene Roddenberry section, but all in all, we blew through it pretty quick.

We did not go to the IMAX so have no opinion on that.

Fascinating Displays of Space History

By scooter46 |

This museum two hours from I-10 had loads of great space memoribilia from old rockets to a rumbling example of different types of launches. From a burned out German V-2 missle to one of the early space capsules one could spend many hours walking the four levels and watching the four movies available. Worth the drive.

Good way to spend an afternoon

By Ed S |

This a a very good museum with lots of samples of rockets and missiles. There is also a good history of space exploration. It is very child friendly as well as fun for adults. The place was extremely clean, including the restrooms.

Family Time

By angelsaiz |

This is a nice place to go with the family. Everybody enjoyed it. Very interesting
exhibits. The price wasn't bad.

World's first astrochimp's burial site and other cool stuff!

By WanderingSpriti |

I know spave is mankind's achievement but it was done on the back of a brave chimp - Ham - and he is buried here! Really liked the respect he is accorded. The rest of the museum is very informational and entertaining - including the reason why this part is chosen for space work! Also the museum has worldwide hall of fame for space related work! There is a cool collection of missile launchers, rocket propellers and even an earlier drone - back from 1956! Yes, 1956! it is a great place for any science enthusiast! I did find the star trek piece a bit cheesy but you cannot deny the impact that series has had on our general culture! So, it does have a place in this museum!

Excellent !!!!

By Ralph P |

This museum, on a hill overlooking the town, covers only a small area but the main building is multi-storied and packs a hugh amount of interesting exhibits therein. You can trace the development of rocketry and space exploration right from the V2 weapons of WW11 to the moon landings, the space shuttle and beyond.
The variety of exhibits is extensive and they are laid out in an easy to follow route around the building.
This is a little gem of a museum and should not be missed by anyone with an interest in space exploration.

Amazing information & engaging exhibits!

By Pedro I C |

Wow!

I did NOT expect this museum to pack SO much information and have so many amazing exhibits. You could get lost in this museum! We traveled with our three kids (10,7,5) and they were mesmerized the whole time. From the amazing pictures, to the actual pieces that have been up in space, to the stories in video, to the interactive displays, to the suits that they could try on, the kids were engaged from the start. We will definitely have to visit again.

A word of advice: finish off at the gift shop on the first floor. Do NOT start there, or you will find yourself short on time. They have some pretty cool stuff, so don't allow them to get distracted.

Nice museum for aerospace enthusiasts and kids

By llassocs |

This is a nice museum if you are really into aerospace or want to learn more about our early space program. It could use a good deal of updating in both the physical plant and the exhibits. It is very handicapped friendly. You ride up to the 5th floor in an elevator and, as you progress through the exhibits, there is a ramp than moves you from floor to floor. There were several families with small children there when we were there. The parents were explaining some things about it and they could watch some short videos. By the time they got to the ground floor, they were excited to try on space suits, play with the space-oriented toys, and have their pictures taken in costume in front of space backdrops. There is a small gift shop geared towards children. They are also building a playground in front of the museum. It should be open soon. It is a nice place to get out of the heat for an hour or two.

Cool Little Gem for Space and Science Nerds

By dyethesky |

We literally had 15 minutes left before they closed when we passed through Alamogordo. We took the elevators up and ran through the museum quickly taking everything in.

Fortunately this place is rather small, though there are plenty of sites to see and tons of information about each exhibit. Many hands-on exhibits, like practice flying and standing on a platform to experience what the ground feels like when a ship or rocket takes off nearby. There are also several cases on display of space food and conveniences, which are always interesting to see how it really is in space!

Definitely worth a visit!

Very interesting

By RaleighNCtravel |

This site is also listed under another name so check the reviews there also...International Space Museum. We really enjoyed our visit. I had worked for a NASA contractor during the Apollo program so this brought back memories. The Museum has lots of exhibits, including those of the Space Shuttle and Space Station. There a number of videos though out the Museum, and also a simulator to land the Shuttle. The staff were very friendly. One neat view is to look out at the town with the White Sands in the background from the top floor. Beware, the Museum is closed on Tuesdays.

Very Interesting

By Cynthia P |

A well-done museum focusing on NM part of the Rockets and Space Exploration. However, the museum does not minimize the contributions of scientists from other countries and centuries old astronomers and mathematicians. The Hall of Fame includes them all. The museum includes many original artifacts (missiles, meteorological, space), including equipment I remember my Dad using for meteorology. There is also a nice exhibit on HAM the first chimp in space (as well as his grave site). As an added bonus, there is even a Star Trek component. We highly recommend the stop.

Great for families

By DLJ4472 |

A must stop when traveling through or visiting Alamogordo. View the history of space exploration and travel.

Great Museum

By notb4mybeer |

We found this place on accident on our way through NM and were pleasantly surprised. We got there around 4:30 so we had to rush. Wish we had more time. The museum has lots of well planned little details and interesting exhibits. Fun stuff for all ages.

Space. The Final Frontier in Alamogordo!

By Courtenay O |

When you enter, you go through the gift store, past the bathrooms. You will love this place if you love space, so pay the admission fee (for just the museum, or with the planetarium/for the film, or all three). With limited time, we chose just the museum & paid senior prices ($7 each). We climbed aboard the Discovery (Endeavor on the way down) elevator and felt as if we were in the modular as we lifted up to the exhibits on the 4th floor. Very clever design! Here we looked around to see the Icons of Exploration, and the moon model that was behind Walter Cronkite when he covered the Apollo 11 lunar landing. We sat for awhile, watching "On the Shoulders of Giants" - a film on a loop, about Apollo 17. It's by the Apollo snapshots, with 4 folding chairs.

We passed by exhibits on a shelf as we walked down a ramp: Apollo, Gemini, Mercury. Before heading down the ramp, I tried (and failed) to land the space shuttle in the simulation. We also explored Space Station 2001.

On the 3rd level, ROCKETS! We felt the force of a rocket launch. I loved this! I've lived in FL over 58 years, & never experienced a shuttle lift off. This came close to it! We saw exhibits in this area, and also on the windows.

On the way to the 2nd floor, we saw that a new exhibit is on the way. We kept walking, and saw a wall of astronauts, past the red SPACE BOY trash can. Where are the women? Here on level 2 was an artifact installation. Looks good so far!

The last ramp lead to level one. On the wall were more astronauts, and those who worked with them, including the women. But only 3. Before getting all the way to level 1 there was a sub level - a tribute to Gene Roddenberry. Don't forget to try the transporter, with sound effects! We continued on the ramp to 1, to read about more space explorers - five more women. I tried on the jet pack, but did not make a lunar module, & I did get suited up to be an astronaut. I love this place.

We took Endeavor down to the entrance, and could not resist the gift shop. Got a really cool tee shirt for only $20.

Rockecheers!

By Travelers330 |

If you haven’t been here, it’s an excellent place to see and take pictures of rockets and things. There is one level in the museum under construction. The museum has plenty of artifacts and informations to offer. The whole family can suit up as an astronaut for a photo shoot. The dome screen at the “IMAX” theater has varieties of films to watch that are awesome. It’s better than wearing a 3D glasses. If the admission to the museum and/or “IMAX” film is/are too pricey, then the free admission to outside has plenty of interesting to see.

Excellent

By Cecil S |

Was pleasantly surprised at this museum.. Alot to see and do. A lot of the history of the early space program

Nice place to visit

By Denise T |

We had fun at this museum. There is a lot of history here. This is the first time I've ever been an astronaut!

Great hot day activity, interactive activities

By Travel658434 |

Enjoyed the interactive activities, especially the space suits and helmets you can try on, level one. Amazing views of Alamogordo and White Sands. We enjoyed the Star Trek exhibit on level one. Highly recommend the dome theater! We watched Black Holes. Amazing interactive movie. Great for kids and adults alike

Alamogordo’s Science and Space Museum

By Alexander C |

I would say this just okay. I have seen better examples at other museums. If you are traveling with children (8 to10) they would probably enjoy the displays.

Great place to learn about space and its pioneers!

By X5173GUtimt |

Great view of the Tularosa Basin and out over Holloman AFB and White Sands Missile Range, where much of our space exploration history has its roots in the development of vehicles and systems to get us out of Earth's orbit!

Nice place to visit

Nice place to visit. Growing up in Central Florida where Kennedy Space Center is this was a nice find. Really surprised me when u went.

Fantastic Experience

By avisl |

Took a short drive to the museum. Very interesting to learn of the part the area participated in the space program. Very interesting exhibits. The movie was great, be sure to see it.

Lots of neat stuff about the Right Stuff

By okiesooner09 |

I had never heard of this museum until I recently read about it in the book "Packing for Mars". As a space nerd, I couldn't wait to see it. Many of the best exhibits are on the outside of the building before you pay your admission. Ham the space chimp is buried close to the parking lot Don't be in a hurry and miss it. John Stapp's rocket sleds are in a separate building off to the right. There is an impressive rocket display on the left. The museum itself is a little pricey but there are several floors showing the many milestones of space flight.

See the history behind space travel

By ind_sub |

This is one of the best museums of it's kind that I have visited. It's as comprehensive as the Cape Kennedy museum and much less crowded. Easy to access and ample parking available.

A must see NM museum.

By BB61-Sailor |

Took the great grandson here so he could see the rocket ships! Had a great time there, a lot of kids activities to keep their interest. The dome theater had a great film on Black Holes.

It's ok...

By Bob A |

I was expecting quite a bit more with all the high reviews. The coolest things are sitting outside and free. It's a little pricey $7 per person for the museum only. Then it's another $7 for the planetarium and then another $5-$7 for a small movie. Younger kids get bored quickly as there is a lot of reading involved. I wouldn't take small kids inside but view the free stuff outside. This is a one time thing for sure.

Very interesting site to visit.

By Abby K |

The exhibits were very informative. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The views of the landscape are amazing from the top floor. Very hands on experience. Worth the visit.

Wow! So much to see and learn!

By Jim M |

I knew that NM had a lot to do with rockets and space but there was a lot I did not know about. It was humbling to actually touch a V2 rocket that was captured in Germany and was tested here. I loved seeing the old test equipment and the monuments to the Men and Women and a monkey that we lost to the program. Also the views of the valley were amazing. We did not do the Planetarium but will the next time we go.

Very interesting

By SusanLeonard |

Very good when there weren't hordes of school kids running around shouting and generally behaving like lunatics. Teachers should be told to keep the kids under control. No staff around to tell them - so only 4 marks.

Pay for the double ticket to include the IMAX theatre. We watched the film about Storm (tornado) Chasers. Excellent.

VERY impressive!

By Wanda H |

5 floors of tons of space history information! It's a LOT of reading, but worth the time. Laid out very logically.

Race to Space reminder

By taosmandm |

Well designed trip down memory lane for the older visitors and a great learning experience for the younger ones. It is a great educational museum presented in a fun way.

In Dire Need of Tender Loving Care

By Marie5466 |

Don’t let the look of the building and outside displays fool you. This museum is seriously lacking.

I don’t know how the money from visitors is used but it doesn’t seem to go into the upkeep of this place. Everything here looks dated, worn, shabby, unkept, dirty, dusty, poorly maintained, out of date, old and sad. As soon as I entered this place, I couldn’t really wait to be away from it. It was just too gloomy and depressing. Even the two ladies at the front desk seemed detached, indifferent. They didn’t appear wanting to be there at all.

Maybe it’s just hard to collect space related items but there is not much to see here, mostly plaques of the people who made history with space walks, space repairs, longest time in space, etc. The various types of foods eaten in space, and of course, various types of astronaut suits, engines and machinery.

In the kids space it looked like the games were broken and/or missing pieces.
There are a few fun things, like the elevator that looks like the inside of the cockpit of some spacecraft and the garbage cans in the shape of rockets, otherwise it is pretty drab or bland in this space.

Views of the valley from here are nice.

Of the four floors, only 2.5 had exhibits, the rest was closed for upgrades, new exhibits and it looked like it had been that way for a very long time. It felt like stepping way back in time instead of looking towards the future… So disappointing.

It can get quite windy up here – be prepared for that…

This place was so fun!

All sorts of fun displays. Star Trek images and history was a nice surprise. We definitely enjoyed our visit here. The elevators were under construction but even still they did a good job of getting everyone where they wanted to go when the wanted to get there. Lots of interactive displays. Very cool historical info.

Good museum

By Paula C |

When our GPS guided us here we thought it must be wrong, but it wasn't. This museum is alittle ways up in the hills and very pretty. There are many missiles to walk around outside and then four floors to see inside. The Hall of Fame is in the same building. There were the usual space mission control mock-ups, space vehicles, but all very interesting. As you wind down the ramps between floors the Hall of Fame inductees are on the walls.

If you are interested in space come here

By harryatkck |

The exhibits in this museum provide a wealth of knowledge about the history of space exploration & the nuclear program. My visit was very informative & I learned a lot.

Very Impressive

By joeherbig |

Spent a wonderful afternoon visiting the museum and Imax show. The museum was very interesting and the space show was spectacular. I would recommend this attraction whole-heartedly.

Good thing admission was free...

By Joy G |

We hit them at a bad time. Their elevators were out of service as were the restrooms. One family tried to bring in a handicapped person and there was simply no way for them to get upstairs to the exhibits. Some of the exhibits were fairly interesting, but I'm afraid I saw nothing to rave about, inside or outside.

Loved it, even though it was closed!

By CaraJW |

We didn't realize that their hours of operation had changed and, sadly for us, went through Alamogordo on a Tuesday. BUT we easily spent an hour there walking around the many, many outside exhibits. Displays were all clearly marked and explanations were good. So sorry we couldn't review the inside as well. If you're driving through, this is--in my opinion--still a great stop on Tuesdays, when the main building is closed.

Not large, but some nice exhibits

By JoyousWITravel |

Small museum, but some nice exhibits detailing space history. Exhibits about the early space missions, missiles, rockets. Astronaut/ space “hall of fame” with pictures and details about people important to space history. Also outdoor area with rockets, engines, and other large items. Traveling with a 6 and 8 yo who enjoyed the museum, especially the Space Shuttle landing simulator and trying on space suit costumes. Reasonably priced at $8 for adult and $6 for kids.

Nice Museum

By TexasandBeyond |

This is a nice museum but it could use some updating. It appears they are beginning that process so I look forward to seeing the improvements. It is still worth the trip/money as is and is great for both space geeks (my husband) and those of us that know nothing about space.

Very interesting

By newfamilytravelers |

This museum was good. We enjoyed looking at the old rockets outside and the interactive learning exhibits. We also learne a lot of new things about space travel and NM. We would return.

Interesting and nice facility

By Kaytay3000 |

Interesting bit of history. We enjoyed looking at the planes and exhibits plus it was something fun to do while we were visiting the area. The building is nice and placed nicely on the hillside.

Sadly Disappointing

By Mdavey |

Admittedly I’m a huge fan of NASA and the space program in general so I had high expectations. Still, there was a lack of authentic equipment from the space program that makes the name of this facility problematic. They are doing some remodeling, but it doesn’t look like enough to make this place a must see.

Vacation NM

By Lori A |

Very cool place to visit with wonderful history of the beginning of space program. Excellent exhibition, hands on and unique. Moon rock, missiles, capsules.

Cool.

By Carlos Tadeu |

Very interesting museum that shows a little about the space conquest by the Americans, as well as the technology for launching rockets. Like everything Americans do, the museum is fun, organized, clean, easy to get around, in short, it's the first world.

A great stop for space/science enthusiasts

By Kelly H |

Signage is poor getting up there, but a must stop. The exhibit is four stories and full of unique exhibits (moon rocks, rocket parts, astronaut gear) as well as a planetarium and outside exhibits. We had a 4 year old and he loved some of the exhibits (like replicating rocket strength, dressing up as an astronaut). My whole family enjoyed this museum and was better than we thought. If you take your time, it will take about 3 hrs to go through (including a planetarium visit and seeing the outside exhibits).

Awesome

By Omahan95 |

Awesome place to visit if you're in Alamogordo! Admission was a little on the pricey side; however, if you are unable/don't want to pay the price to actually walk through the museum, you can still walk through the gift shop (they have some *really* neat things even just to look at). Also, there are a few 'exhibits' (so to speak) that can be looked at in front of the museum (so, in other words, for free). Very interesting exhibits on display!

Awesome museum for family

By Pat Y |

Spent the afternoon exploring and found this gem. Lots of information about space travel and the role of Holloman AFB with astronaut training. HAM, the space monkey is also buried here. The museum has 4 floors of exhibits and features photos of astronauts inducted in the hall of fame. One floor has space suites and helmets for children to dress up and areas for them to create Lego space rovers. Great family entertainment.

Space Adventure

By Bill A |

Fantastic museum combining science, science fiction and history with great exhibits. Truly a hidden gem. Need to allow at least two hours when visiting.

Very well done museum

By chazwill |

This museum had an outdoor area exhibiting various rockets and missiles, a very informative four-floor museum on the history and development of rocketry and space travel/exploration, and several excellent movies in the planetarium. A Smithsonian-class museum all around.

Wonderful History and Information

By John S |

If you are a history buff especially of space travel, you can't miss this. There are many options but we just did the self guided museum tour. It was $10 for adults. They have other option that add to the cost and I'm sure they would be outstanding. We went on a Sunday and got there early but we were able to walk around the outside exhibits and read the placard on them. We then did the walking tour. You start on the forth floor and make your way down. May great exhibits and artifacts from the space race with the USSR and into the post USSR time. Well worth a few hours of your time.

Space, final frontier

By LINDA N |

Those who want to learn about history of space travel, this is the place. Great exhibits inside and out. Nice Star Trek exhibit. IMAX not so great, it is more a planetarium show, which was good. Recommend!

Lots of history here

By Mary V |

This is a spacious, well laid out museum featuring many items from the space program around the world. It is a beautiful building with lots of parking, easy access and reasonable cost. The displays are arranged from top to base (take the elevator up and then walk down) and there is a hall of fame along the ramps to acknowledge the many who have contributed to the space program - not just the astronauts. Also lots outside to view including the grave of a chimp who went into space. Quite a few interactive displays inside to appeal to kids too. There is a small gift shop.

Worth the trip

By Holly M |

Visited here with a homeschool group. Great guided tour, planetarium show and class. Really well done, interesting memorabilia.

A must visit for the Space enthusiast.

By Jeff C |

There is a display area out front with a variety of rockets and the actual Rocket Sled that Dr Stapp road on Holloman Sled Track in Dec of 1954 which made him the fastest man on earth! Inside is a gift shop with some unique items. Buy your ticket and take the elevator to the top floor, from which you will work your way down. The endeavor to keep the displays fresh and rotate them fairly often. From the beginning of the space race, the types of equipment involved. Stories of the people who made America in Space a reality. Everyone of all ages will enjoy the shuttle landing simulator where you try to land it back in Florida. There is so much on display there is no time to explain it all here.

Cross country road trip

By Peerpoint |

We were in town for a family gathering so we took the kids here for visit. At 6 and 8 years old, they were more interested in the interactive exhibits like landing the space shuttle and putting on the space suits. The outdoor exhibits were also interesting but couldn't stay in the 100°F heat too long.

A very pleasant surprise

By FAFNAR |

We stopped here after a visit to White Sands. It was extremely interesting and we stayed for over 2 hours. I especially enjoyed the tribute to Gene Roddenbury and Star Trek.

Beauty on a hill!

By maggiemayintx |

Very interesting place! Lots of things to view both inside and out. Interesting exhibit of Star Trek and its evolution. Great for families...

Lots of interesting exhibits, especially if you enjoy learning about humans in space.

By Colin J |

We enjoyed the outdoor exhibits as well as those indoors. It looked like the kids got a kick out of putting on space suits and taking photos in front of a lunar module.

Interesting and informative

By Steve F |

The museum is well done and very informative. Lots of exhibits, videos and hands on items for the kids. When you enter the building you pay at the visitor desk on the first floor, and then take a elevator to the 4th floor to start your walk thru the museum. Easy to walk wide ramps as you descend from floor to floor, elevator is available if you don't want to use ramps. We spent about an hour and a half touring the museum, we enjoyed the visit. They also have several outside exhibits.

a pleasant brief visit

By Oakland |

We stopped here with our 6 & 9yo hoping to spend the afternoon. It was fine for a brief visit, but the museum is not very hand-on and requires a lot of reading, so the 6yo got bored pretty quickly. Several areas of the museum were undergoing renovation, so hopefully it will become more child friendly. There is a playground outside, which was appreciated. Take note there is no food on-site or very close by (other than a vending machine). If you have an ASTC card from another science museum it’s free admission to all in your party. It was definitely worth a stop but perhaps we were expecting too much from it.

What you don't know...

By Yenia |

1. You'd enjoy this museum whether your kids are into space stuff or not. 2. Make sure you visit all the different exhibits and gardens, and specially Ham's grave. 3. The kids will enjoy different things on different days, so more than one visit will be better. 4. Don't forget the iMAX and planetarium. 5. They have awesome events

Up Up and away

By TOM Y |

If you are interested in the final frontier, this is a must. History and a collection of Rockets makes this highly entertaining. Go for one of the planetarium shows. Closed on Tuesdays.

Very Informative

By HarrisSurrey |

There are very good exhibits inside and out and lots of information about space travel. we were disappointed with the planetarium as it was basically an advert for Google and it's moon space race. We had expected a space film history.

RIP HAM

By Joshua C |

This museum is out in the middle of nowhere but at the center of so much science and testing that it’s worth the trip or stop to see a lot of space, aviation, and science artifacts. On the side of the mountain, it looks out of a sci-fi film too.

Nice place

By Charles S |

Nice array of space artifacts for the small building. Kids had a good time looking around and with the interactive exhibits.

Searching for its reason to exist?

By ColoTraveler0 |

The visit started off great. A top notch set of rocket-things to view in the outdoor park. Really cool elevators that take you to the top of the building. And some really great stories about space research in New Mexico.

And then you start reading the same stories over and over and over as you go through the museum -- I guess there aren't really many stories to tell. And the displays really don't tell you much of anything. (The definitive exhibit on inertial navigation never actually tells you how missiles actually use it to steer to their target.) And the one of the largest exhibits is about the Star Trek television series, in what comes off as an attempt to be cool and relevant but ends of feeling desperate when a space history museum gives up on real science and peddles fantasy. And another large exhibit described how exciting it was when the museum opened way back when. And over the past three years, the inductees to the International Space Hall of Fame included Jules Verne, HG Wells, Walt Disney, Fritz Lang, George Lucas, and Gene Roddenberry -- demonstrating that by 2014, space exploration had reached its least productive era in a century, and the best we can do is celebrate the fantasists.

A nice Place to visit

By wtw9 |

While I wouldn't make this a destination stop, it's a nice place to visit if you're in the area. While there are some outside exhibits, most of the museum is on four levels in a five story building.
You begin by taking an elevator to the top. As you finish each level you go to the next by following ramps. It's an easy walk.
There are some things of interest for all levels of attraction, including kids.
We also watched a 45 minute presentation in their planetarium building which has recently installed the latest projection technology.
The only downside was a couple of families whose kids were running wild. But then the museum can't be responsible for a serious lack of parenting skills.

Fascinating

By S49M |

The Museum provides an excellent opportunity to spend a few hours learning about the history of rockets and space travel, and the critical role that New Mexico, especially the Tularosa Basin (within which Alamogordo lies), played in America's space program. Scientific, technological, historical, and political information to challenge adults, and hands-on activities for kids of all ages. The museum's setting provides a scenic overlook of the City and Basin beyond.

Really cool

By Louis F |

Really cool place for anyone who is interested in space or rockets. A lot of good information and good exhibits.

Great but hire new desk staff

By Lorraine N |

The museum was extremely fun for my teenagers. They enjoyed the planetarium very much. I have no complaints about the museum itself besides some closed displays due to renovations, but at least they are trying to improve.
My issue was the front desk staff. They were rude and uninterested in customer service. They actually got into a verbal confrontation with each other regarding their schedule. My children and I got front seats to whether or not one would reschedule a doctor appointment or the other would reschedule her mother's vacation. So Tacky!
These are the people that have first contact with every visitor. SMH

Kids enjoyed

By Christal R |

Stopped in with the our 3 young kids they enjoyed it a little disappointed that the 1st floor was closed off I'm told that's the best part to see all the space suits was also disappointed that the gift shop closed earlier then we were told when we purchase our tickets. We would have gone there first before exploring the museum we were told it closed at 4:45 showed up at 4:30 it was locked other then that it's a place to check out kids really liked it

Great planetarium presentation

By Jennifer P |

My boys loved the “star show” planetarium presentation that showed us what stars were going to be visible tonight. Always fun to try to land the space ship in the simulator game. Only takes about 2 hours total and it is neat to see the space history.

WE were already at White Sands

By NittanyLion70 |

To bad the Imax was not working the day we visited
Nice little museum honoring astronomers, science fiction writers, scientists, and of course astronauts

Amazing

By Fdelidude |

Rare find! Did not expect to find a Museum of this caliber in Alamogordo!
Ended up spending hours and having a ball! Highly recommend this place if you’re in town!

Exhibits affected by renovations

By Maelrarny |

We were somewhat disappointed with the amount of renovation all happening at once.

Interesting outdoor exhibits. There is also a planetarium, I-Max, and more exhibits in a different building.

Best exhibit in my non-scientific mind was feeling a rocket lift-off.

If you were interested in the space program this might be a good place for you to visit

New Mexico Museum of Space History

By AeroDoc27 |

When people think of Space History they usually think of aliens, UFOs, and Roswell, NM. Actually, New Mexico is perhaps the leading place in North America for the development of rocket science and technology. Much of it took place at the nearby Holloman Air Force Base. The Space History Museum really is a fine place to learn all about rocket, missile, and space technology. Fascinating stuff. The tour begins on the fourth floor (elevator up). As each floor is explored a ramp takes you down to the next lower level. Very easy access for folks with physical challenges.

Not big, but definitely interesting

By curiousexplorer2015 |

My kids really enjoyed both the outside exhibits as well as reading up on everything inside (as well as trying on the astronaut outfits).

Nice museum

By Stefanie H |

We enjoyed our visit to this museum, although we found some of the exhibits to be dated. It looks like there is a renovation going on, which will be helpful. The elevators are a lot of fun, and you start on the top floor and work your way down. There are multimedia displays, including one where you attempt to land the Space Shuttle. The outside exhibits reminded us a lot of the outdoor area at White Sands Missile Range. You can see Ham the Astrochimp's grave under the flags outside the front of the museum. We were very touched to see that people had left bananas on his grave.

Desk staff need to review there people skills

By jimandsilve j |

Nice little space museum where you can kill a couple of hours. We have been to much larger space centres on our road trip and didn't find this centre that interesting although the shuttle simulator was pretty good. The jewel in this centres crown is the Star Trek exhibit , if you are a Star Trek fan you will love this. On the downside the lady on the desk needs to retrain her people skills, she would do well to be less rude and more people friendly in addressing customers inquires

A great museum to learn about space exploration

By Vilma B |

Depending on how much you know about space exploration, it may be big or small. Our family loved it. I personally did not know much about the space program and was able to learn a lot. There were some hands on activities for kids, but not too many. If you have time in Alamogordo, I definitely recommend visiting.

History you can touch

By Patrick C |

While some of the exhibits were only of interest to an enthusiast many reached across the spectrum from static display of rockets to the rocket sled cars of space travel testing the actual equipment used is here to see and in some cases touch
There is enough interactive displays to keep young and old interested and the price was certainly worth the museum

Great place to learn about nuclear energy!

By Jack P |

Well developed display very informative. Docents were very helpful and knowledgeable. Well worth an afternoon. Takes nuclear energy from the discovery of fusion to today.

The early history of rocketry.

By sas s |

The part we saw was very good. Sure explained a lot about rocketry and Navigation. We were disappointed the planetariumand the cinema are under repair and could not see them

Interesting Information

By Haley |

A cool museum with a fun rocket garden and tons of information about Space History in the Tularosa Basin and beyond. You start the tour on the top floor and work your way down - a cool design. The kids enjoyed the space dress up area. The outside areas include the grave of HAM - the first primate in space - and an old test track from the rocket test days. There is also a planetarium and theater. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in Alamogordo.

Looking Back at Space History

By dmen12018 |

If you've ever followed American's involvement in space exploration, this museum is a "must see." On display are all sorts of remnants of the space age, from rocket engines to tools and devices used on space flights. There is also a section devoted the Star Trek and Gene Rodenberry, including a transporter like the one on Starship Enterprise. "Beam me up, Scotty!" Another section lets kids try on space suits and helmets, just like real astronauts. Outside is a range of different rockets and space capsules, as well. A lot of information about a fascinating part of history.

Family Musuem

By KG_TXtraveler |

This is a nicely put together, small museum on the scenic side of a mountain in Alamogordo. We had 2 small children who enjoyed the museum, although were not too interested in reading all of the plaques. It is budget friendly and only takes a short while to visit. The kids loved dressing up like astronauts at the end. There is a walk up several stair flights from the parking lot, be aware with strollers.

Very Nice museum

By AZboyinWI |

Mostly geared towards children, but still enjoyable for us older folks- we might even learn somethings :) I know I did!! Travelng with a couple of small dogs, we left them in the vehicle and breezed through this inside, then upon touring the outside exhibits, they were able to come along with us. A very nice museum. As with the outside exhibits go across the road and also see the Daisy sled (deaccelerator). along with stoppingby Ham the astro chimp's grave.

A must for anyone interested in space

By Daniela R |

I took my son there because we had a couple of days in the area and he loves all things related to space. The lady at the front told us that most people are done within 90 minutes to 2 hours but we spent a lot more time inside. It was very informative and also had some hands on things to do. The outside has a space park with real rockets and missiles.
