It is a gem in Indianapolis. No it will not compare to the Art Museums in larger cities maybe, but for a city the size of Indy and given the added beauty of the grounds and Lily Home, it is worth the price of admission.

The gardens and Lilly house as well as the beergarden and greenhouse are must sees in the summer months. A lovely walk on a shaded path and still return to the museum to enjoy the cool air and a bowl of fresh noodles in the new pop up noodle shop that is there as a temporary exhibit. There is a tram that for a small fee will take you to each of the outdoor places and give you some history at the same time.

This is a beautiful museum with something for everyone. It has first-rate art from pre-historic to contemporary, as well as interesting special exhibits. The grounds of the museum include incredible gardens and a beer garden where you can stop for a snack and a drink (not just beer)! There are numerous special activities such as the recent Family Day celebrating Indian culture. It is definitely a place to return to again and again!

Nice Christmas lights display in the gardens. easy to social distance during COVID. everything is spread out in different areas and outside. A variety of different light set ups and they were done very well. Something for all ages and interests.

A friend and I browsed through the beautiful gardens of Newfields last month during its annual Spring Bloom exhibit enjoying the gorgeous array of the blossoms of spring flowers. Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, poppies, ferns and bleeding hearts are joined by native perennial wildflowers and flowering dogwood and redbud trees to make this a must see place in the Spring. Plan a nice rest at the beer garden to break up the visit!

Galleries covering a broad range of interests and tastes. There are multiple docent led tours (focusing on select pieces within a theme) that are a great opportunity and exceptionally well done. Go out of your way to join one of the tours. As a metallurgist I particularly enjoyed the Samurai Sword exhibit that is currently on loan to the museum. Docent led tours of the museum grounds and gardens are also available. The Lilly House is also included in your admission. We went back for a return visit the next day.

This is a surprisingly beautiful museum with some impressive artwork -- quite unexpected and highly recommended. The grounds and gardens nearby and the Lilly house are also beautiful (for a summer visit). Would definitely return!

I have been to Indy many times and this was the first time experiencing the Indianapolis Museum of Art and it was AWESOME!! Displays arranged very well and great selection of art. You are able to get close to almost all the art in here and staff in knowledgeable of the pieces on display.

We saw the Van Gogh exhibit in the Loom and then looked around the museum. There are also a couple of nice cafes there. Highly recommend.

Definitely worth a visit. Wonderful art collections beautifully displayed. Lovely grounds and greenhouses. Great cafe.

A group of us did a photo walk around Newfields on a cold January afternoon. I imagine it is quite a different experience during any other season, but the winter, especially when there is no snow on the ground, was a bit bleak. We had fun and got some good pictures, but I'd wait until spring to do the sculpture garden. It was an excellent time to do the Museum of Art though.

This museum has 4 floors and a huge outside area with sculptures everywhere. I saw beautiful paintings, sculptures and lots of activities. There's also a cafe and gift shop.

I was on an afternoon visit to Indianapolis and decided to try and take a look at its major art museum. I was interested in the recent additions to its contemporary art collection and was very pleasantly surprised with its extensive collection of many pieces of contemporary art. This is not a museum with just a few pieces of contemporary art. It has quite an extensive collection of many of the famous international contemporary artists. This is a large museum so give yourself a couple of hours (at least) to really see all it has to offer in addition to its extensive gardens. This was definitely the highlight of my visit to Indianapolis.

My first experience at the Lume, was quite alright. For someone who has never seen Van Gogh before, I would suggest seeing his work first. Newfields does have his exhibit on the second floor. It is a must watch exhibit.
The interplay of lights and music with the famous starry starry night on display was spectacular. They put up a pretty good display of most of his famous works. What was disappointing was the lack of information about his life and his approach to art. Some more insight into the other facets and his life would have added more value to the exhibit.
They should have had the art exhibit and the Lume together as a package. Also, they should have allotted an entire hour for the session and had visitors streamlined for the sessions.
A good way to spend the weekend and tribute to the world famous artiste.

The Dali exhibit was wonderful. Loved the Lilly House, well done. Amazing artwork curation. ! Don’t miss! The cafe needs improvement in terms of quick options.

Visited here with my Daughter. Had lunch in the cafe. Layout of the is easy to traverse. Docents and gallery guides are always helpful. Find something nice at the gift shop before you leave. Also, first Thursday of the month is free admission.

Please Note: This museum now is called Newfields. We went to the museum on the third day of the new Van Gogh exhibition, called Lume. While many art purists are sure to be offended by the exhibit, it could only be called Outstanding. We have been to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, so we did not expect to actually see a great many paintings by the master, but the exhibit uses all the latest media tricks to show Van Gogh as his best and put his life in context. Heartily recommended for everyone--of all ages!

We do not live in Indy but we visit family here. As a result, we have visited Newfields a number of times over the last few years. We even purchased a membership for one year even though we do not live close. We just wanted to support a place of this caliber so it can continue on. This was our first visit to see Spring Blooms in the gardens. The trails are shady in a large portion so it makes for a pleasant stroll even with the sun out. The flowers we saw on this visit were beautiful! The art inside Newfields is impressive! It changes periodically so you see some new pieces on a repeat visit. Even though we mainly wanted to view the gardens today, we could not resist a visit inside again. Great place to go!

This was just the trip we needed to get us in the Christmas spirit. It’s absolutely beautiful. Pictures don’t do the lights justice. The lights are absolutely beautiful. The hot cocoa concessions and spiced cider are a great way to stay warm and super delicious. Great family Christmas fun had by all. I would definitely recommend getting your tickets ahead of time as they sell out fast.

We visited the free nature park portion of IMA (Newfields) for the first time and found it a delightful place for relaxation. There are well-groomed trails, a lovely pond with wildlife, an unusual visitor center and artist-created interactive play pieces. Even as an adult, I enjoyed the Funky Bones human skeleton climbing pieces. I'm looking forward to exploring more of the park in cooler weather.

This museum is beautiful and well worth stopping in. There is plenty of art to see as well as a nature park that you can explore. There was a playground for kids. There was also an art piece called “Funky Bones” which was in the movie “The Fault in Our Stars”. If you like art then you will like this museum.

The art exhibits are first rate, the grounds and gardens a real getaway, and the food delicious. We were there for a wedding reception at Newfield's and it couldn't have been more welcoming or elegant!

Caters to a broad array of interests including design, fashion, sculpture, and paintings. We had enough time to go and see everything we wanted to without it taking up the entire day. Will definitely go back if I’m in the area again

I recommend this museum. Interesting exhibits. Good layout and spacing. There was no rushing thru exhibits or being overcrowded by others.

This was a very good museum. We went on a free day and highly recommend coming! The museum itself was a very nice and brand new looking building. The staff was great and there were many staff members and volunteers walking around.
This museum has 4 floors with many pieces from many different cultures and eras. They had some truly great pieces worth seeing, such as the original LOVE sculpture by Robert Indiana.

Someone recommended this museum for the Dali interactive exhibit. I'm glad I went.
The art and exhibits were good. I liked walking the grounds. Unfortunately, the beer garden was under renovation. This museum had not been on my to-do list. I suspect because Newfields, IMA, and the Lilly house/gardens are all the same thing and not separate attractions.

I live in St. Louis, which has a world-class art museum with free admission. That being said, paying $54 for a family of three to visit Newfields was a bit of a sticker shock. However, the museum was well done and interesting. My 6 year old, who is very interested in art, loved the motion sensored spring flowers in the foyer, the Robert Indiana LOVE sculpture, and spent time sketching the Georgia O'Keeffee Jimson Weed painting. I was very impressed with the Samuel Levi Jones exhibit also. The sculpture garden was still closed for the winter, which was disappointing, since it was late March.

We went to see the LUME exhibit for Vincent Van Gogh. It was immersive and incredible. I highly recommend you spend the money to get tickets. This is a once in a lifetime experience. Plan an hour to see it all.

Everyone who visits the IMA (Newfields) is surprised with the variety and quality of the collection. Few expect a city of our size to have an art museum of this level. The facility itself and the grounds are also impressive!

We traveled here on a rainy day to see the Crackingart exhibit which was lots of fun. The art collection was amazing as well. Great afternoon!

One of the best city museums I have been to and one that you will want to spend some time at and return for more. The museum alone is well worth the cost of admission but then there are the gardens that are also part of the museum campus. A destination in themselves they are an unexpected bonus with acres of naturalized plantings, fountains, sculptures and formal landscaped gardens in an arboretum-like setting. A short walk through the gardens leads to Oldfields Estate, a National
Historic Landmark. It is a well-curated exhibit of the architecture and furnishings of the estate home (circa 1930) of Indianapolis pharmaceutical magnate J.K. Lilly Jr. and can be freely toured but the docent directed tour (about 45 min.) is well your worth your time. The estate's garage has a brilliantly restored Duesenberg of the era on loan from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that adds to the authenticity of your visit. The museum grounds include a Beer Garden, a very nice cafe and a museum shop that you will have to tear yourself away from. All with free parking.

After looking for things to do on TripAdvisor, we decided to check out IMA. What a pleasant surprise to find an incredible treasure awaiting us!
We spent the afternoon engaged with the immersive Monet experience - Lume. Afterward, we walked through various galleries and were thrilled to find works that are wold renowned! We ended up in touring thw grounds and found ourselves in an enchanted Garden just outside the museum. We could’ve spent two days there, it was a lovely experience and we would highly recommend to anyone wanting to spend an afternoon immersed in a beautiful world of art and culture and nature and history!

We really enjoyed this museum. My expectations were so so but was pleasantly surprised on mix of art, furniture etc. Wish we had more time to spend there. I have already told my husband that if we ever in Indianapolis again I want to return.

Our Family enjoys the grounds, the exhibits, and just everything.
Something for everyone from grandkids to Grandparents.

We are from Chicago which is home to spectacular museums, and our family loved the Indianapolis museum. It had a large variety of art, indoors and it had beautiful gardens and sculptures on the grounds of the museum. Highly recommend you put this on the top of your list if you’re visiting Indianapolis.

This Museum has a lot on offer: a collection of international public art that you can meander through, a vast collection of art, as well as historic house.
The public art is a must, the works of art from Lichtenstein's painted brushstrokes, to internationally commissioned works is well though of and laid out. Pick up a map and follow the walking paths to view all the pieces.
The museum has a varied collection of mostly American and European works. There is a 'hidden' gallery that recreates the inside of a historic home replete with staircase, be sure to check it out.
The historic house is interesting, but nothing too different from other historic homes. However, not far from that on the museum grounds is a green house, which is spectacular along with a beer garden. At times of the year they plan events, so check beforehand as often there are food carts, live music set up for you to enjoy the outdoors.
A thoughtful amalgamation of art museum, public art walk, and historic house/greenhouse. Don't rush your visit as you will miss out - take your time.

See All the Amazing Art, top two floors are always our favorite, Do all that you can and all that is offered, you can spend the whole day here

Enjoyed walking the grounds. Visited on a free admission day. Awesome artwork. Detailed and enchanting exhibits.

The museum is a bit out of the main part of the city but that works to its advantage, granted the gardens and greenhouse and the Lilly House that can be visited at the same time. There is, of course, a beer garden as well. The special exhibits are well done and the sections on the local artists are particularly interesting viewed as they can be, in the context of time and place.

I have been there several times. It has a bit of everything. They have a good collection of the standard art museum paintings but then they have some interesting modern art and decorative art.

We stumbled upon the Virginia Fairbanks Art & Nature Park as we were traveling. We were quite surprised and happy. There are fun pieces of art intermixed with some thought-provoking ones in a very lovely nature area. Great place for a small walk, meditation, or a picnic. A true treasure of Indy that is operated by the Museum of Art.

Be sure to view the grounds, all of them, take the kids, and go and come back many times. There's so much to see, but it's still manageable in one day. My favorite thing? Ok, Things- pre renaissance art, summer film series, special exhibits, the art store, the gardens, and modern art.

My friend and I browsed through the French paintings at our ease. Later we returned with our spouses for the Winter Lights with choreographed music. WOW!! The Indianapolis Museum of Art is always on our list of must-do activities.

I am a fan of French impressionists and highly recommend this immersive experience. Monet, Renoir and Degas to name a few are included in this exhibit. The music selections fit perfectly with the moving art and the entire experience was fabulous. You will want to experience two cycles of the exhibit in my opinion. So beautifully presented! We visited on a beautiful sunny day and explored the gardens also. We stayed for over three hours total and could have easily stayed longer.

The museum has a show of orchids on the grounds and then has paired them in rooms with paintings. It reminds me of the WSJ articles on flower arranging from a painting. The collections are excellent as well and have some new things on view. The large LOVE sculpture is now inside. Don’t miss the orchids and the art.

Wonderful paintings. Nice friendly staff. Good cafe. Only reason for not giving 5 stars is that they carry no posters of the paintings in the gift shop. I would have loved to have bought a few.

What I liked was they had a taste of everything. If you were trying to do someone different periods in art and styles this place has it. It is not overwhelming in size so you can take your time and see it all if you want to. We were there at the holiday season and enjoyed the walk through light show too.

Interesting exhibits inside and great place to walk around outside in the summer. The winter lights display is also a family tradition.

I enjoyed my first visit to Newfields so much, I returned two days later before heading to the airport. The building, collections, grounds, gardens and Lily House are all beautiful. Knowledgable and enthusiastic docents in gardens and at Lilly House were a plus. Café was pleasant, and food was good. It was a highlight of my brief visit to Indianapolis, and I look forward to returning.

I came here JUST for the outdoor spaces. Spring has sprung and nature is showing off her bounty! I was incredibly enchanted meandering the gardens... the grounds are BEAUTIFUL and very well kept. Put on a good pair of walking shoes and enjoy all it has to offer. And when you get hungry, there's a cafe to eat at and a gift shop to explore after!

It was a nice diversion to see this excellent facility. Not versed in the other Indy museums bit if this is the what the town has to offer it is impressive,

The various rooms and periods of art offer a sampling of works by a wide range of painters and artists. One would need to visit a larger museum with more works by an artist whose works you liked yo get a broader understanding of an artist’s range of works but one can get a glimpse of some segment of an artist’s portfolio.
The special exhibition on plastics is an excellent commentary on global issues we are currently wrestling with - as explained by the artist who picked a particular category to represent( the artist who selected fish talked about the floating “continents” of plastic in the sea.
Very well done.

Inside and outside, Newfields provides a wonderful experience for enjoying various forms of art. In particular, THE LUME offers a different format for experiencing classical paintings. Several interactive exhibits throughout the museum serve as educational entertainment for younger visitors. Additionally, when the weather is favorable, there are lots of outdoor opportunities, including special events such as Harvest Nights and Winterlights.

You can spend all day in the art museum and see everything from classical artists like Cezanne and Van Gogh, to ultra contemporary pieces. There are visual and auditory exhibits that challenge the traditional notions of art. Or you can walk the grounds. In the spring, the gardens and grounds are stunning. We also had fun chilling out with a snack and a drink in the beer garden. There’s almost too much to do in one day.

The museum was a pleasant surprise while passing through Indiana and a perfect way to spend the afternoon. Their Design Exhibit which focused on the intersection of art and industrial product design was a highlight and a must-see for anyone interested in functional art. It was too cold to go on the grounds and see the gorgeous flowers, which was a shame. Definitely will return to see the grounds. There was a great balance of contemporary and classic art, as well as pieces from different cultures and countries. Highly recommended!

Well worth the visit to this beautiful museum. I really enjoyed the exhibits. The building is lovely as well, and we had a healthy lunch in the cafeteria/dining room. You can eat outside by the flower gardens or inside behind large windows that allow you to experience the gardens visually.

The ticket is not expensive, and it worth! There are different kinds of collections inside and outdoor. It was still cold outside, but the greenhouse was still good.

I just finished walking through the museum, the Lilly mansion, and the greenhouse to see the fabulous orchids. Wow what a fantastic experience! I truly recommend visiting Newfields(the new name of the museum and grounds). Unfortunately the orchids will be gone soon.

I took my parents to this museum with me and it was great - well all loved it! Even my dad who is definitely not the "museum type".
The museum has a lot of variety so there is definitely something for everyone. From paintings and sculptures to glass work, furniture designs and samurai swords!
Would definitely recommend.

I really enjoyed walking through the gardens. There is a greenhouse full of orchid's. An apple orchard with bee hives,

Totally unplanned trip but was well worth the time. The gardens and grounds are just so beautiful. Plan a day for this visit and take a lunch or eat at the cafe on site. Plenty of activities and exhibits on site from a birds of prey demonstration to Japanese swords and sword fighting. There is a Van Gogh on display and numerous other great works of art.

Do Not miss The Lume. The Van Gogh experience was immersive, beautiful, and chronicled his live and art work. I have never experienced anything like it,and would do it again. Be sure to buy your timed tickets prior to arriving. Wonderful that something like this is in Indianapolis.

We’ve been here many times but returned for the “Harvest Walk.”
Newfields is part of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It’s 100 acres of out door art and displays that include one of the Lilly Mansions, open fields and wooded walks throughout the property.
October plays host to paths full of pumpkins and gourds, both real and jack-o-lanterns for displays.
The mansion has an animated show shown across the whole front of the home, set to music.
This was a fantastic family evening in which the kids early efforts to not have fun they ended up enjoying themselves. There were plenty of sights to see and things to stop and do.
Another of Indy’s many offerings that does a great job hosting a family fun night.

This is a really beautiful museum, home and grounds. They have beautiful artwork there and when we were there enjoyed great quality special exhibits. We also enjoyed the well kept grounds and the visit to the Lilly house. Definitely worth a visit in Indianapolis.

This visit as opposed to the last one I will have to give the staff a 5 out of 5. One particular staff member gave us another museum printout from a copying machine that said it was better than the permanent printed one. That was helpful. Also checking in was very simple and pleasant. We did feel that the modern/contemporary art exhibits were lacking and signage could have been much better. OK, the last time we were here was at the Monet & Friends immersion at the Lume and it was very well done. I confess we were a bit tired and didn’t see the gardens this visit. Years ago you could drive back closer to the gardens but not anymore. On the plus side the indoor parking garage keeps you out of the sun or rain. And it’s free. Bonus. We have a membership to the Cincinnati Art Museum and perhaps we are more impressed with that particular museum.

You MUST reserve your time online ahead of time. Once you pay, you get a pdf ticket per person that they scan when you enter the museum. Please wear a mask at all times.
Well curated exhibits, especially the African art section. Not a ton of items in comparison to some other art museums in other cities but the pieces they do have are great representations of the art history and style of each timeframe on display.

Newfields it’s an awesome museum. During Christmas season is even better. Indy Newfields Christmas lights is such an amazing thing to do with family and friends.

I used to visit the art museum a lot when it was all free, less so now there is a charge. However, they do a wonderful job with school field tips! We went two years in a row and had a wonderful program each time including a class, tour (very well done with kids!), and free time on the grounds. It’s a beautiful place to visit!

We enjoyed our time there with the family. Lot to see and learn in our first trip the state. Highly recommended.

Spent several pleasant hours touring the galleries and gardens and didn't even see half of what's there. We ate lunch in the museum cafe where the food was very good and the view of the gardens beautiful.

We always love going to Newfields. The Winter Wonderland they create November-January is gorgeous and the gardens are amazing. Every season seems better than the last here. We got a membership we enjoyed visiting so much and so often.

The LUME was worth the cost of admission. Eat before you go. Cafeteria food is very expensive. We tried to find a restaurant close by couldn't find any, not even fast food. :(

They have one of the best Hoppers and a stunning Renoir. Reason enough to go. Expensive entry though. But it includes Lilly House and the gardens

The collection isn't large but they have a few good paintings, some interesting pointillists' works among them. Good collection of glass.

After seeing the Van Gogh immersion event earlier this year we stopped by on our way back from Chicago to see Monet & Friends. Although Monet & Friends was enjoyable we didn’t feel it was as good as the Van Gogh immersion event. Perhaps the novelty of the first visit was no longer there. Still it was an enjoyable time and very reasonable if you consider what is being charged in other cities. Remember also included is the permanent exhibits and the the Newfields Gardens. We did take advantage of the permanent exhibits, however, it was another day of on and off rain so we skipped the gardens. Besides we were tired from the long drive from Chicago in the rain of course. We did enjoy the 70s fashion exhibit that featured some wild designs plus a few from the legendary Andy Warhol. There is plenty of free parking and much of it in the covered garage. Perfect for a rainy day.

This was an amazing experience. First of all the price is great for what all is included. The gardens and property was so very beautiful with flowers everywhere. The museum itself is expansive with all kinds of galleries. There is also the mansion on the property that is included that you can go through. Wonderful time.

We were in town for just the weekend and looked for something to do outdoors because the weather was perfect. We've been to Indy many times, yet this was our first visit to Newfields. We decided to do the Immersive Dali exhibit as well as the gardens, and it was incredible--we learned a lot about the artist and also saw some of his lesser-known works. We really wanted to be outdoors, so we didn't tour the entire museum, but all the exhibits we saw were well done. The gardens were beautiful and we were impressed by how well they tied in with Salvador Dali. After walking the grounds, we stopped off for refreshments. Adam and the entire culinary team were friendly and helpful. We ordered a turkey and pesto panini with our drinks and sat outdoors in a relaxed environment. We only planned to be here for a couple of hours, but were here for nearly 5 and still didn't see everything. We will definitely be back and we are hoping to return for their holiday lights spectacular later this year.

Really nice museum. It had some great pieces and definitely recommend if you need some culture during your time in Indianapolis.

The gardens adjacent to the Museum are spectacular...well-identified plants with thematic arrangements. Segueing into the Oldfields estate including the Olmsted-designed gardens with sculptures as well as touring the Lilly home were an added bonus, well the time spent on a beautiful sunny day.

Definitely a place to explore, but make sure you have plenty of time. There are a lot of things to see. There are four floors. I was finally able to see the van Gogh experience The Lume.
I barely tapped into the massive garden area.
Special $.25 to enter the museum and around $25 for the van Gogh experience.
There’s a very large café and shop. I bought two books for the grands. I paid five dollars more than they were on Amazon. So there’s that option. Also, outside the loom on the fourth floor, there were a lot of gifts from the van Gogh experience. Coffee mugs, tea mugs, water bottles, pouches, t shirts, etc. some very gorgeous items.
The museum is only open until four today, which was a Saturday.
Free parking, and the restrooms were very clean and spacious. They allow the backpack purses but you have to put them on the front of you instead of your back.

We love stopping by here every year. Kids and adults will love the lights. Get your tickets online and you will save a lot of money. We love going here every year.

A favorite place for me to go, I walk my dog here often. Renamed Newfields some time ago, this is a awesome place to view some outstanding and creative art, to stroll the impressive grounds, relax and reflect. Very family oriented, events such as weddings, gatherings, and outdoor movies are just a few offerings, there are many. This is the site of yearly art festivals that are very well attended and popular. Something for everyone. Very close to the historical Crown Hill Cemetery and Butler University. If you have time, explore this treasure of Indianapolis.

Van Gough traveling exhibit, The Lume, is truly amazing. It immerses the visitor into the works of the impressionist’s masterpieces including Starry Night. Its how art museums should display their works. The museum itself is spacious, well designed for kids with many interactive stations throughout. Don’t miss the walking paths thru the nearby gardens on the grounds. Come early, stay late.

I was gifted this membership and oh my what a place for everyone our grandchildren love every part of this Museum. The grounds, green houses and the Lilly House is out of this world it's a must see MUSEUM And GROUNDS even in the winter... The art in the main part of the MUSEUM FOUR FLOORS ARE A DREAM FOR ANYONE. YOU CAN SPEND A DAY ON EACH FLOOR IF YOU STUDY EVERYTHING IN EACH SECTION. MY FAMILY AND I CAN NOT WAIT TILL WE CAN COME BACK.

We were visiting family in Indy and spent an afternoon at the IMA/Newfields.
It was a beautiful museum with something for everyone on the art lover spectrum. The grounds was lovely and wished we had visited either earlier in the summer or after the snow had fell.
The price was a little high but very reasonable compared to other museums in the area.
We had lunch in the museum cafe, again a little pricey, but a convenient and tasty lunch.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. A really nice afternoon.

We absolutely loved this museum - it has an excellent collection and they did a wonderful job of how they arrange their exhibits. Must-see for art lovers!

Outstanding, creative, interesting art museum. Beautiful building that is full of artistic treasures. I live 1200 miles away. I make a point of visiting this jewel every other year. More often if I could. Makes my heart sing when I see young people visiting the museum and young families. Keep up the outstanding working on the museum and beautiful gardens.

Love this museum not only for the exhibits, but the gardens and movies! The kids love it for the activity areas and all the grounds to run. It is great in spring, summer and fall! The 100 Acres is free and accessible all the time. Lilly House is great during Christmas time! One of our favorite places in all of Indianapolis!

For years we have talked about going to see the Winterlights at the Indianapolis Art Museum, now called Newfields, but have never taken the time to actually plan a night to visit, order the tickets, etc. But this year, our daughter mentioned that they were going so we decided we couldn't miss this opportunity. We picked the 8 pm time slot, which allowed us to meet in SoBro for dinner, and then it was an easy drive over to Newfields. I'm sure from now on we will want to make this an annual winter time family event.

We enjoyed our visit very much today. The range of art is exquisite and the staff was very helpful as well. There are three floors full of art to see - plan on staying for the day!

Lots of flowers in bloom. A family place with beautiful grounds. Relaxing afternoon like to stroll the ground. Many types of art something for everyone.

We were on a tour and the 2 hours was only half of what we needed. The art was fantastic. The gift shop was well stocked and had a broad range of products. The flower display was wonderful. Unfortunately we had to bypass the Botanical Garden and it will be a spot to visit in the future.

What marvelous gardens. Could have spent days just napping under the shade trees. The gardens are great in the late spring. The staff was very friendly. The inside was large and had a great selection of art. Definitely worth the stop in Indi and looking for something to do.

Site of the original 1970 LOVE statue by Robert Indiana, the museum is located in an "art park" called Newfields. Pleasant to stroll around the grounds. Inside is a good survey collection with some very nice American and European art, including Impressionists. And one Van Gogh!

Great museum with solid permanent collection (check out the Tiffany pieces!) and great temporary exhibits, as well. It's easy to spend a morning or afternoon there, and then end with a walk through the sculpture garden next door.

Newfields is unique in it’s own way and has several things to see. The amenities however are lacking and finding convenient parking during events is usually non existent.
The Van Goh exhibit is really trying to grab the younger audience but to be up front watching videos of paintings done on abode animate and only getting to see one of his original pieces wasn’t much of an experience that really wowed me.

We were unsure what Newfields really was, but there were plenty of different things to do included in general admission. Most notable was the art museum, but there are a variety of different outdoor places to go see on the grounds.

The museum ties to a large pharmasotical company has given them a larger acquisition budget than the Metropolitan Art Museum in NYC! You can see that evident fact in every inch of the grounds, the estate or the museum building with its vast and highly prized collection.
We have been members for nearly two decades - yet we live some 120+ miles away. Why? Because it is addective, the stroll through the grounds is mesmerizing, the museum's ever changing international exhibits are exciting, all while the special - or seasonal - festivals & shows throughout the year are top attractions.
Don't take my word for it, see for yourself, a piligramage is a must, while annual membership is a bless (-:

Brought family from out kgo..
Now. Newfields... so absolutley sorry, I wasted $23 per for 9 members of my family...nobody enjoyed it, we left confused and dumbfounded.
Last time, Van Gogh Lume was magical...now Lume is a display of absolultely, ridiculous, toddler art. No one enjoyed it. We were literally the only people there. If you want to experience "Night at the museum", here is your chance. Absolutely no one is there.
First hall after leaving Lume is Rococo. My Canada guests assumed that Rococo was a display of 1700 French, English gowns for Marie
Antoinette.
They are actually gown s for men pretentding to be women.
It is actually a display of designers of rupaul drag queen gowns. Interactive displays allow children to design gowns and wigs for transvestites.
My California and Canada relatives were not impressed, I was beyond disgusted. Won't be visiting Newfields anytime soon... or ever again

I knew when I got out of my car I wanted an annual pass to this Museum. There were brightly colored, oversized snails "crawling" all over the outside of the building. Our first visit we enjoyed the more classic arts on the second floor. My children did not find this entertaining, so we ventured outside so they could explore the gardens. We meandered through the grounds and stopped at Oldfields and learned a bit about the history of the museum (and found the big, red Elephant).
The Beer Garden was closed, but we were still able to see the greenhouse and enjoy a taste of home (having originally lived in a tropical environment). The gardens were producing fruits and vegetables and on more than one occasion I had to chase my toddler away from the blueberry bushes!
Our second visit took us to the Contemporary Art floor. I'm not usually a fan of abstraction, but many of the pieces blew me away. IMA does a wonderful job curating amazing pieces that will make you stop and really experience them.
The gift shop is a fun place to look, but as with all gift shops most items are priced to ensure profitability (I'm not complaining). The restaurant was amazing! I was hesitant to try something new as their burgers are not what I would call traditional but wow, was it good!
We are looking forward to going back in a few weeks to see more of what we missed. I was disappointed we didn't have the chance to see any of the films they were showing this summer but will make it a priority next year.

We paid $40 for two senior admissions. Included in this price was admission to the art museum, Lilly House, the garden, Madeline Elder Greenhouse and the beer garden. The way that they prefer you purchase your tickets is online or by scanning a code. This requires you to pick a date and time for your visit. There are no refunds. It is possible to purchase them at a counter with a human but we found their customer service skills to be lacking. When we asked for a map we discovered again that they want you to scan something to look at a map on your phone.
The young lady at the Lilly House was wonderful. She graciously answered all of questions and was very kind. The house was very well taken care of and interesting.
The greenhouse is small but has quite a few plants. It is worth your time.
The gardens are very nice and again they are well taken care of.
The art museum is on the second and third floor unless you want to pay extra to visit the fourth floor. The majority of the exhibits were well displayed. There was a large variety.
The cafe is expensive but it has comfortable seating with a lovely view of a large fountain and flowers.
The thing we missed most while visiting here was human interaction. No hellos. No may I help you. An attitude of use your phone and do not bother us was what we experienced. Disappointing for such a beautiful place.

This trip was planned by my uncle and aunt who loved the museum. They have read about it in the web. WE went there early in the morning and was awed by the exhibits.

This was an amazing trip,we had such a great time and all the people were so pleasant. There was so much to see and do,so much to see in one day.

I spent a happy midweek afternoon visiting the Newfields museum, the Lilly house (Oldfields) and its gardens - all making an interesting contrast with the morning's visit to Indianapolis Speedway...
The main building is large and I only able to see around a third of the exhibits during my visit, so its best to look at the exhibitions and prioritising your visit accordingly. I was keen to see Oldfields and walk the gardens so had to miss some of the galleries.
Good points:
+ Attractive main building with excellent facilities
+ Interesting selection of exhibits
+ Added bonus of being able to see the Lilly House (Oldfields) and its beautiful gardens
+ Plenty of parking
Not so good points:
- The cafe in Newfields is large and well designed but I thought the food options were rather limited

Newfield's is trying something new and I find it appalling. They're trying to be more accessible, so they're showing less art and leaving more walls empty. There's not really much point in owning over 54,000 works of art if you're only going to display four of them in a room. They also made the rather odd decision to categorize the art by subject rather than period and location.
Artistic periods matter. People need to understand how realism was a rejection of Romanism and how Cubism arose from the belief that art did not need to follow nature. Traveling through art history through its movements helps us better understand world history, and arranging all your portraits in one room, and your landscapes in one room, is excruciating.
At the same time, Newfield's still has nice artwork, so even though I hate the way they organize themselves these days, I still like pretty artwork.

Had a very nice experience with a date, walking, talking, & viewing AMAZING paintings, sculptures, & interactive art. Beautiful grounds and scenic views. A "must see" if visiting Indianapolis.

A great Museum for the whole Family, especially there van Gogh exhibition is something you have to see. But also, all other areas a nice and good. You would have to plan a whole day if you also want to explore the beautiful Garden.

A great place to spend a little time. My husband and I plan to go back to see more when passing through Indiana again in September. Diversity of artists displays.

I visited the IMA with my wife and daughter. There were supposed to be some fun things to see and do here. What we discovered was that the admission was way over priced for what you get to see (and do). It's not a place we will make a habit of visitng any time soon.

I’ve been to New York and Las Vegas to see the Love signs and this one was just as beautiful and mostly since I was there for the Valentine’s Day weeekend. There was a lovely play and the food in the cafe was reasonably priced.

What can I say about this magnificent place that has SUCH beautiful outdoor gardens, and a STUNNING four floors of some of the BEST artwork of all genres that I have seen. Words cannot adequately describe the wonders of this museum. Many art festivals are held here as is a truly magnificent Christmas/holiday light show/display. Bring the family and ENJOY!

The museum is in a gorgeous building...not a huge collection but well-curated exhibits covering a wide range of areas. The gift shop is exceptionally good! Definitely worth a visit for an art lover.

Moved here from Chicago several years ago. Been members at IMA since, LOVE the gardens, love walking around to enjoy flowers, Beer garden nice for little treat, house always decorated nicely...takes you back in time!

As you arrive, you see gigantic snails made of recycled materials sliding up the sides of the museum. There are more inside and through the museum. But the real fun is in the garden.
The garden is full of creatures that are all made from recycled materials. They were as big as adults and so colorful. Newfields has teamed up with the Italian art collective Cracking Art to welcome hundreds of animals to the Newfields campus this summer. These brightly colored sculptures are made from recyclable plastic and speak to the environmental issues that face our planet, as well as how the world is becoming increasingly artificial.
See snails in the Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion and penguins inside the IMA Galleries, before exploring The Garden where you will have to watch out for giant alligators on garden pathways and elephants inside the Lilly House. My daughter loved doing cartwheels in between the line of foxes in the garden.
We spent about 2 hours walking through the art museum and the outside garden. Plan to go later in the day, so you stay cooler while outside. They don't close until 8 pm.

This place is awesome! Large art museum with a lot of unique art. It’s not usually my thing but they had some really cool pieces. They also have a pretty large outdoor garden area with a lot of plants

Newfields, the new name of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, offers inside galleries and lovely, walkable gardens to visitors. Like many art museums, Newfields has permanent and special exhibits. There are many volunteer opportunities, lectures, and demonstrations available year round. You can park inside or outside. A day at Newfields can enlighten your artistic senses and simply be a fun time!

Pleasantly surprised at the amount of art and the quality of art that this museum has. Spent about 3 hours in the museum and only left because our feet started to hurt! Enjoyed every minute of the time spent here. Its a gem.

Tripadvisor needs to update the name of this museum. It is new called Newfields. When you search online, try the new name, although the original one seems to still work.
This is an amazing museum. We visited with a high school friend who teaches art, as does his wife. At the time, we toured a design exhibit, then visited other parts of the museum. One of the exhibits was by a student of my friend's wife.
You could visit this museum daily over three or more days and still not see everything. If you are in Indianapolis, and if you enjoy art, design, and history, take time to stop here at least for an hour or two.

the outdoor trails of IMA is beautiful and fun to explore. in the IMA is also huge and interesting art. ive been there a couple times and always have a decent time.

What a hard-working staff to curate a wide variety of interesting art and decorative objects. Each time I visit this lovely museum I leave feeling recharged and ready to take on the world. Gift shop is full of great notecards, jewelry, bags, mugs. All top quality.

We went for the winter lights with family. Seems like they pay countless security workers to enforce mask wear even though you’re outside. Even when away from other families and well social distanced they constantly belittled you. For $25 a person the lights weren’t even that great. Definitely overrated and over priced

I am a member of IMA and finally got to see the Winterlights show on the last Saturday. There were some very impressive trees covered from top to bottom in lights, it must have taken many hours to cover some of those trees! the light show in front of the Lilly House was fun and coordinated to the music, which was on a loop and repeated. I wish the loop had been longer, it repeated often. But the coordinated effort was fantastic!
The whole experience was somewhat small but this is only the 2nd year they have done this show, so i expect each year they will be able to add lights. I was glad I didn't pay more (because I am a member) I would have felt that it was more expensive than it was worth.
It was well organized, and the flow was helped by guides making sure you were going the right way.
We did go into the Lilly House, was not impressed at all by the "paper chain" decor. I admit I don't really get modern art, but this looked like a bunch of children were in charge of the decorations. Paper chain decor on the trees as you walked into the house, I thought cute, little kids were invited to decorate the trees, then in one of the rooms the whole room had been strewn with white paper chains, and I mean strewn! no organization to it all. It was bizzarre (and I have talked with many people who thought the same) It covered everything in the room. Not impressed with that decorating choice. The little oragami butterflies were very cute and done so well.
The warming stations outside were nice, but could have been placed a bit throughout the event, they were all in one area. I am concerned that a child could easily put a hand in those fires though. They are raised, but a child could still get in there.
I am always a bit sad that alcohol is served in public events like this. I am not a big drinker, but I can't imagine people need alcohol to enjoy the light show. I understand it is a way to make money for the IMA, but really it is so offensive when walking along and being overtaken with the smell of alcohol emanating from a person, outside no less, at 8 feet distance.
All in all the show was nice, I am a bit jaded from having been to Longwood Gardens (on East Coast) at the Holiday show, they have many more years experience, the themes are well developed and the use of the gardens is more complete. I am hoping over the next number of years that the IMA can improve to a similar standard!

Visited the museum last Friday - the building itself is inspiring. We enjoyed two floors of the museum, the 2nd and the 3rd floor. Great to see the L O V E sculpture! We did not have a chance to visit anywhere else, i.e., gardens, mansion, beer garden, as it was too cold and windy for outdoor enjoyment. What we did see, was impressive. There was a very smooth flow to the galleries. A truly wonderful collection of European Art and American Art, including home furnishings. As an enthusiast of Spanish Renaissance and Baroque painting, I enjoyed the works by El Greco. Wish the people I was with enjoyed art more! I would have spent a good bit more time here.

Hate the New Fields name. So out of town folks are dreaming of visiting “New Fields”...NOT! The person who came up with New Fields name instead of the Indianopolis Art Museum should be fired.
And what happened to the incredible French Impressionists Collection. Did someone steal it? It certainly wasn’t available for visitors this week.
Big waste of $50 for family of three.

Beautiful gardens, great for pictures and nice art museum. Food was excellent too! My kids would recommend the pretzel in the beer garden.

I really enjoy going here.
Visit in a Thursday, and it's free admission. I was quite impressed with the diversity of artist. I wad pleasantly surprised. Tbe staff snd volunteers, vend iver ba jwards to help you in snywzy possible. Lively facility and grounds.
Closed in Mondays

Great way to spend a day! Wonderful museum & lovely walking areas. I was not familiar with this part of Indy and would highly recommend a day here. I visited in the fall and the weather was lovely along with the blazing trees and the incredible art. Also enjoyed the stroll to the Ely Lilly home.

One of the great things about smaller art museums in smaller cities is the absence of the hordes of tourists that make it impossible to see, let alone enjoy, anything on the walls. IMA at Newfields has tons of space and a pretty interesting, if medium sized collection. Very strong for its size on American art and a few gems that --- ahhhh -- you can just take your time looking at. Also, a great kids area with a lot of projects to keep them busy. Collection gets a 4 if only because it just isn't huge, but experience is a 5. Lovely gardens too

Sadly, probably the worst major art museum in the Midwest. I'm from Indy and have been maybe 20 times, each time with renewed hopes that were quickly squashed. Have also visited most major art museums within driving distance (Chicago, Columbus, Cincy, St Louis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, etc.).
Pros: Not crowded. Local. Gardens are beautiful!
Cons: Not family friendly (you'll get lots of dirty looks, staff following you, etc. here). Not friendly really to anyone. In all my visits I've never once felt welcome. Average collection that is maybe a decade behind current trends, yet the staff manages to display an air of pretentiousness and stuffiness worthy of the best works in the world. Ironically, the museums with the best works in the world are more friendly and accessible.
The IMA display an impressive commitment to being average. Even down to the food at the cafe. Each year seems to bring the standards down just a little lower.
If you want family friendly, just make the drive to Columbus. They love kids and will welcome you. Amazing museum.
If you want a top-tier collection, just go to Chicago. Amazing works.
Wish I could give a better review. I want to like it here. Please someone do something.

An outstanding local museum well worth a few hours visit. The American Art galleries are filled with superb painting and sculpture by masters and local artists. European and contemporary art as well.

Went on a date there and was totally surprised, it set in a beautiful location and I can't wait to go back in the spring. We saw the Infinitley Kusama exhibit, we stood in line for about 20 minutes which was fine with us and really enjoyed the exhibit and thought it was worth the short wait. It also helped asking the staff members their favorite exhibits in the museum and after hearing most of them had the same fav's we did go see those exhibits. The Georgia O'Keefe and Tiffany glass wall were amazing.

This art museum is a wonderful surprise hidden in the southern part of the city. The campus is beautifully landscaped with adequate parking. Once inside you are presented with small, but well-planned exhibits. The staff is pleasant and well informed about the displays. There is conveniently placed seating for resting or admiring the art. The museum also has a restaurant on site.

I went here with my boyfriend and we so enjoyed our visit. It was a very good cultural experience and fun too. The design of the whole museum with chairs put in front of pictures so you can sit and view them and always views of outside. The whole place just had a young and fresh vibe and very well run. I loved all the American artists I saw and gave me a new appreciation for American art. The interactive piece made a great photo op and so did the famous LOVE sculpture. I think anyone could love this museum. We did not get a chance to see gardens this is a big place.

A beautiful day spent wandering NEWFIELDS gardens and museum , Lovely place to spend some time while in Indianapolis. I would recommend!!

After looking forward to visiting "The Indianapolis Art Museum", I recently popped for the $18 each for my son and I to enjoy a Saturday afternoon. I enjoyed several exhibits before I asked a question of one of the docents. She did not know the answer to our question about pewter and went on to tell me that my "purse" which is about 2" thick must be worn on the front of my body to continue through the museum. I would not be allowed to carry it by it's handle either. Now I would have been annoyed at this, but I would have complied if I'd been told as I paid for admission. No mention was made of this rule at all. It's a really embarrassing and confrontational situation to be told that you can't have your purse on you during your stay, especially as I watched other women with purses 3x the size of my small purse go unchallenged. But then one of them was a Louis Vuitton bag so, go figure. By the time we were on our way to our last exhibit on the 4th floor, a very "interesting character" (think Dan Ackroyd in Ghostbusters) would not allow us to get on the elevator because we were such a risk to the museum. Funny thing was, we were on the elevator with a dad with a 8-10" thick backpack. Hmmmm.... The whole experience was so overblown and unnecessary. Some other items to consider banning....strollers - on actual wheels, children who twirl their arms and legs around near sculpture.....large cameras with straps. The list could go on. So review: Unwelcoming, confrontational, and uneducated docents, they used to all be art students. Don't think that's the goal any more. From $0 -$18 quite a jump, won't be back, won't recommend. I'll stick with Barcelona, Chicago or Rome thank you.

Wonderful permanent collection and always offers interesting temporary exhibits. Their new light show in November and December is a must as well as the spring bulbs (over 250,000 blooming bulbs in April). My children really like the monthly Cereal Cinemas and Family Days. I enjoy the new Beer Garden and walking the grounds. The Clowes Collection is my favorite permanent exhibition.

This art museum is amazing. The Van Gogh immersive exhibit was outstanding. It takes about 30min to watch from start to finish and we watched it fully twice. The rest of the museum was beautiful as well. The gardens look like they would be beautiful in the summer.

Don’t miss this great art stop in Indy! And the Winterlights if timing is right. The Lilly House and sculpture park are enjoyable as well.

The IMA starts decorating in September for the Winter Lights show at Newfields. It runs from the Friday after Thanksgiving to January 6th. It's usually sold out, too. This year my hubsnad and I were lucky to get reservations. The lights, music, and volunteers were wonderful. It was a very magical atmosphere. There were wood burning stoves scattered through out to warm along with stands selling hot chocolate and mulled cider. Would definitely attend again. Remember to book early.

This is someplace you definitely want to spend the whole day to explore the grounds are so beautiful you don’t want to miss them I would definitely explore the entire museum first every single floor including the exterior balconies beautiful views from the third and fourth floor you don’t want to mess end of your day I would head outside to the beautiful grounds and explore maybe even have a picnic. The price of the museum has increased $18 now but it is definitely worth the price you pay it is a whole days worth and the first Thursday of every month from 4 to 8 it is free .

….does some good. Reviewed by me in February, 2017 (qv) I noted that on arriving in the splendid atrium on the 2nd floor there was no explanation of what was on offer through the several doors. This has been noted and resolved by the addition of stylish headings, literally overhead at each entrance, so now your choice is clear. Thank you.
The foolish rebranding of the entire site as an art and nature campus, ludicrous and unnecessary, just confuses. Are we to be shown white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) or white-glazed porcelain? The effect, however, is clear; the café and the shop where packed while the galleries were empty.

Did not seem to be handicap friendly. Sections closer to the top were reserved forcing us to walk further down. One of us has MS. Making carrying chairs and food down the stairs...then back up afterwards difficult. Enjoyed it, just be prepared for the inconvenience if you're mobile challenged.

This place is huge!!!! We did not allow enough time for this visit to the art museum. We thoroughly enjoyed two floors of the art museum which was so interesting and amazing but we were not able to tour the third and fourth floors nor the mansion or the greenhouse or gardens because of time constriction. I would make this a day trip.

The outstanding collection of art makes this a top rainy day destination, but be sure to return on a sunny day to enjoy the gardens. The Lilly House, a fine example of a luxurious country home, should not be missed.

Such an important resource to Indianapolis and look forward to their next major exhibit, it has been a while since they had one

An Art Museum with exhibits that change often surrounded by beautiful shady gardens, a historic estate house, and a beer garden. Newfields has something for everyone.

We had an incredible time walking the grounds and museum. The play pads were great for kids and the grounds are beautiful. So many interesting exhibits and enough to keep everyone interested the whole time.
For warm weather wear sunscreen and bug spray and don’t forget water!

Top notch world class level art museum! SO much to see, do and interact with! Great people there as well! You'll need all day (at least 3-4 hours) and it is handicap accessible. Go and enjoy!

The Newfields IMA is spectacular. The grounds most impressive, underground and above ground parking, easy to find, art museum well laid out. Spent a bunch of time in the Deer Zink Events pavilion for a large event with 300 people. Spectacular views of outside gardens. Currently a fashion and a spring flower exhibit...that seem to rotate out every three to six months. Best to do some web searching or call them to get their calendar of exhibits. Excellently done for sure.

This museum has loads of art, statues, etc. The grounds are our particular fun place to go. You can walk around and view the flowers, sculptures, fountains, etc. We used to take our kids there all the time when they were little.

A thorough tour of the museum plus the Lilly house tour can take the best part of an afternoon. Give yourself at least 3 hours - more if you want food or have a phone battery that needs a boost somewhere in the middle of it all. Museum is very comprehensive and has an impressive selection of 'major works' along with just about everything else and a fun section on design. Contrary to some opinions here, I would call this a very good 2nd tier and significant art museum - It isn't MOMA, the Whitney, Boston MFA, Chicago or (locally) Cleveland - but it's not just a regional with less purchasing power (say a Speed). One area it does fall down - a bit too much of artist/group/class as victim explication in signage. (Was it here I read something about dyes used in the clothing depicted in some Netherlandish scene were made with such and such gathered by enslaved people in Africa - what on Earth has that to do with anything) Well anyway. The grounds on a hot August day didn't seem to have much going on - not overly studded with sculpture I noted, but a pleasant and shaded path to the Oldfields-Lilly mansion - which is something of an early 1910s retreat for heirs of the wealthy pharma family. Retreat as in it's not particularly showy - it's 1930s (American) country house. You get a sense people lived in it rather than had it for display. The guided tour was - so-so. It moves insistently from room to room once the set piece AI delivery style explanation is done. I might have done better taking pictures on my own and doing some reading + download the phone app. It's included with museum ticket and that's nice - you can visit inside, take a break and do the house tour, then come back. Allocated enough time to walk between the two - a good 10 minutes, more if you aren't quick. So, having engaged in all this nit picking - is the combined experience still a 5? Maybe a 4.5 Very Good, but I won't knock it down to 4.0 Good - it's better than that.

Lovely Museum. The galleries are spacious and well laid out. I most enjoyed the Post-Impressionist, American Impressionism, and American galleries. The Interior Design gallery was spectacular. I will go back again the next time I visit.

I did not allot myself enough time here! There were so many incredible exhibits, a lot of information. Lots of fun interactives for kids. The gardens were sensational, even on a cloudy rainy day. We did not make it to the Japanese gardens. I definitely will be back and spend more time here.

It was an amazing experience visiting the Museum which has rebranded itself as Newfields in late 2017, a name that covers the entire 152-acre cultural campus, including the museum, its gardens and the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park and Lilly House. It features art galleries, lush gardens, a historic home, performance spaces, a nature preserve and sculpture park. Spread over an area of about 100 acres The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park now encompasses a diverse landscape, including wooded areas, wetlands, open fields, a 35-acre lake and a series of hiking trails. The permanent collection comprises over 54,000 works, including African, American, Asian, and European pieces and represents cultures from around the world and span over 5,000 years. In 2009, the IMA was awarded the National Medal for Museum and Library Service for public service. What we did see, we loved. We strolled outside and enjoyed the serene surrounding. Despite the payment of admission fee of $18 for adults and $10 for children ages 6 to 17, there are many facilities offered free like parking, Wi-Fi, lockers, wheelchairs, and strollers. The first Thursday of every month is free from 4:00-9:00. It remains closed on every Monday. Free admission dates are Jan. 14, Feb. 1, March 1, April 5, May 3, May 22 and June 7. In a nutshell, it is one of the nation's largest and oldest general art museums recording over 450,000 visits annually.

The IMA is a first class museum, one of the top ten art museums in America, in my opinion--and I've seen most.
Their Pointillism collection is unmatched outside of New York, and they would give the Met and MoMA a run for their money.
The rest of the collection has balance and depth in many departments. However, their post-war Abstract Expressionism works are practically non-existent (but one large Joan Mitchell piece is stunning).
Best of all, it's a relaxing experience, as the museum is not overrun with tourists. I love the seats provided to patrons in front of selected works that essentially says, "Sit down, take a long look, don't be in such a hurry."
The gallery with selections by the director is a thoughtful touch.
Nice people everywhere. Excellent food in the restaurant.
An afternoon well spent.
Go!

I went today with my wife and my son. We enjoyed it very much. BUT, 3 tickets cost me $54!!! That is a lot! I can't afford to pay so much money again! So, I will continue to go to the Museum of Art in St. Louis (excellent and FREE every day!), and to the Art Institute in Chicago: FREE every Thursday from 5 to 8 pm.
The Indianapolis Museum of Art not even has a discount rate for seniors!

Very impressive art museum and mansion belonging to wealthy pharmaceutical family.
Art collection was top of the line and world class. a little further out , not directly intown.
well worth a visit.

This was my first visit to Newfields and I was really impressed - by the beautiful environments to see the art collections, by the variety of things to explore, and by how much there was to see and do. Really glad we made this part of our visit to Indy!

This review is limited to Fine Art. Newfields takes a less common approach to art by hanging things related by themes instead of time. Thus I found myself in a “portrait room” that compared portraits from 500 years ago with others that were more recent. Another room examined the female form and its’ differences in difference cultures and it had 5 or 6 nudes showing the “idealized form” isn’t the same around the world. Another room hung two massive works of Christ’s entry into Jerusalem but they were created centuries apart. These juxtapositions make Newfields so unique and fun!
The quality of work here rivals any museum in the country. American master Tarbell, Benson, Chase and Sargent all have fabulous works here. Ossawa Tanner has a stunning work of 2 apostles. Gauguin’s Christmas night with the oxen is unlike any other work I’ve seen him do and I loved it. Hopper has a wonderful image here.
Making life easier on the art lover, they have light chairs that you can move around and rest while enjoying your favorite view. Newfields really did things well. This museum is equal to Cleveland and Detroit. Incredible art. I only with they had more postcards of their collection in the gift shop. I would have bought so many.

We had some time in Indianapolis after getting our daughter to the airport. The IMA and the grounds are well worth a day’s investment. There was a pop up tea garden in keeping with an exhibit of modern Japanese clothing. The Lilly House, a mansion, on the grounds is worth a couple hours. An Eli Lilly heir renovated the house. Indianapolis must have an enormous pharmaceutical industry.

The current exhibit is animals made from recycled materials. See a huge group of colorful snails, walk under the school of fish, walk down the avenue of wolves but dont get to close to the crocs. Some displays are inside and some are outside. We have a membership and we live 2 hours away. It is such a nice museum and the special exhibits are typically worth it.

Each city we visit I try to hit at least one museum. Museums tell you about the character of the city you are in and this visit was no exception.
There are four floors of this museum so be prepared to spend at least a couple of hours exploring, even more if it is warm out and you can enjoy the art outside. It was wintery during our visit so we did not get that opportunity.
The admission was a little higher than we are used to outside of larger cities like NYC or Chicago so that was a bit surprising. I believe it was $16 a piece for non-members.
I was impressed with the variety of art at this museum. From contemporary to colonial, a very open minded set up and set of exhibits.
Some of the abstract art really gives this museum high marks for me. There are some classic artists such as Picasso and Van Gogh, but also some of the lesser recognized names such as Joseph Mallord William Turner, J. Falk, or Barkley Hendricks.
The workers were very friendly and knowledgeable. I was extremely impressed.
We intend on keeping up with new exhibitions and visiting when the weather breaks. We truly had a fun time taking a look at history through artisty.

The museum used to be free. It isn't worth the fee they charge for admission. The 100 acres located behind the museum is free to go to and it is really nice for outdoor photos or enjoying nature

Always something new to see or do. I was most recently at the Christmas Lights event and a free Thursday. I also like to walk the grounds around the lake.

Only had a short time to spent so had a delightful lunch in the cafe and walked the beautiful grounds. Will have to go back with more time.

Although the collection does not rival galleries in bigger cities, there is much more to see than one can manage in a day. One of the best curated galleries, and the selection of piece is excellent.

Most people would not think about the grounds of an art museum being part of the attraction as well, yet this place offers a beautiful outdoor experience as well as indoor.

I understand masks need to be worn inside or when close. But the constant reminding by staff is ridiculous! We’re outside! We’re not within 6 feet. It was interesting thought that if you bought the overpriced food/drinks you didn’t have to wear it. I was told it was sad that I wasn’t wearing a mask walking alone in the parking lot!

This is a wonderful museum in a modern space. It's bright and open, very well-organized. There are extensive gardens and a historic home on the premises. It's a wonderful, extensive experience. Well worth a separate trip to Indianapolis.

The museum filled with arts and collection not available to
Other places the facility is clean and very friendly atmosphere.

We went here on a rainy day as it was listed as top place for families. I however disagree.
The elevators: they show on map all the same but then one is staff only, one garage only. And then the one you can use if you have to due to stroller-is all the way back at start. So annoying and frustrating.
And later find out you can use staff elevator to go down-but then it says Staff Only to go back up?!
Kid room:they have a smaller room with hands on stuff for kids, and this is really nice! However, this is not enough. Other exhibits are not kid friendly at all and you will constantly tell toddler or 5 yr old not to touch. And admission is pretty steep to just see the kids room for the whole visit.
Outside grounds: great to blow off steam with kids and beautiful. But-you can only exit by going back through building. I would prefer direct route to parking lot. So again-way more walking that needed with tired kids.

What a wonderful place. The grounds for picnics were straight out of the English country side. The Lilly house is wonderous

Newfields, which includes the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the grounds and the sculpture garden along the White River, are a unique and special collection well worth visiting. The IMA itself has an amazing post-Impressionist collection in addition to lovely examples of art throughout the ages. They also routinely mount special exhibits worth visiting. And throughout the year they sponsor events on the grounds (Summer Movie Nights, Spring Blooms, Christmas Lights) that range from wonderfully cozy to spectacularly colorful. If you're in town visiting, it's very worth making the drive from downtown (about 10 minutes) to reach the museum and if you're a local, you should join in order to go visit regularly like I do!

The grounds are changed into a magical scene of trees and bushes decorated with lights. There is a paved walkway. We walked through in @ an hour, Timing is everything when it comes to the weather, though.
It could be a winter wonderland or a freakishly cold night...take your chances but dress accordingly.

My daughter and I decided to go to the museum today, 7/4/19 to do something different. We live in Lafayette and drove to Indy a bit more than a 1 hour drive. When we got there a very nice lady at the ticket desk told us if we come back at 4 the admission would be free, so we decided to do that. Took a walk in the nearby park then returned. She gave us a sticker and we went to the 2nd floor and spoke to another nice lady about the little toy animals she was letting small children hold so they wouldn't be bored. Loved that idea!
We just got to the exhibit where Rembrant's self portrait is when a security officer came up behind me and said I couldn't wear my backpack on my back; I would have to wear it on my front! I use a backpack partially to free my hands, but also because I have a LOT of pain in my feet and it's easier to carry the weight on both shoulders than on one side. I explained that and he said there's lockers on the 1st floor...but then I wouldn't have my purse with me. I resigned myself to try to carry the thing by the handle, then my daughter said she'd carry it and just put it over 1 shoulder. Then 2 female employees started telling us we couldn't carry it in there like that! And mentioned the lockers again. I explained a 2nd time. We turned to continue and I was carrying it by the handle again and a female security officer followed me apparently summoned by the 2 other ladies. She said she heard I didn't like their policy and I said I wasn't happy with it because it really makes it harder for me to walk. In talking to her I realized they were saying I could ONLY wear it on my front or put it in a locker period!! I have never ever gone to any museum that has such a restriction on what kind of purse I carry. Yes, I found that this is listed on their website in their tips for a visit, but I had to hunt for it only because I learned about it AFTER driving an hour to get there today. We ended up just leaving.
We were told the reason for no backpacks is that a backpack could knock over something in one of the galleries. So could a stroller; which a family ahead of us was using! It says on the webpage that service dogs are allowed in...but there's more potential for a dog to knock something over than me and my Vera Bradley backpack/purse! A rule like this should be way more obvious. Had I known I could have brought another smaller bag so I could have my phone and wallet with me.
The grounds were beautiful so it was nice to see that and 1 painting. I don't understand why the 4 people at the ticket desk said nothing about my backpack or the lady upstairs by the door. I guess this would be nice place to visit but really scrutinize their policies first before you go. Ladies are only allowed to have a small purse. Can't really say much about anything else because we didn't see the rest of the museum.

Winterlights at the Indianapolis Art Museum was a joyous experience. It was artistic and beautiful. Thank you!

I enjoyed the museum. They had Some rare pieces. The art was just beautiful. Very pleasant exhibits too.

Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained.I very much recommend a visit. And a relax place to stay a couple hours!

We love coming out here every year. We had to move our date because of sickness and they moved it easy for us. It is not the cheapest experience but it is worth it to us. I am still amazed how they cover the entire tree in lights.

Awesome stay at The Waterfront the pool was just perfect for the kids they keep them entertained also everything was nice and neat we most definitely be back soon
Recker Family

We have been to the Museum, the Lilly house and gardens several times. There is always something to discover that was missed in prior visits! It offers wonderful educational opportunities for visitors of all ages as well as the art found throughout the museum and grounds.
Wonderful gift shop, studios, tours.

Indianapolis is one of America's best-kept secrets and IMA is too. We came from California and after frequenting Los Angeles' and San Francisco's museums, we had low expectations. What a surprise. This museum, gardens, park, and historic home are outstanding. The variety of art, architecture, design and soaring views are on par with larger cities. We went twice, we loved it so.

Apparently there is a lot of thought that goes into developing and curating an art collection. The Indianapolis Museum of Art was fascinating for a guy like me that doesn't go to museums. While I was very impressed by the collection, I was more impressed by the tour leaders and their knowledge of what they were showing us. I am not sure if they let everyone in on the back side of how they investigate and restore art in the lab, but if you can see that, it is phenomenal. Also the 40+ acres (I think) that the museum has is some of the most lush greens anywhere.

The last few times we have been to Newfields have been fo special exhibits. The last one was the Art of the Samurai. Well presented like our previous experiences, it was a fascinating glimpse into not only the manufacture and design of the famous swords, it included detail as about the scabbards and other accessories. The story of the preservation of many historic swords and their return to their ancient homes after WWII was particularly interesting! Just wish the pop up noodle shop had been available for the entire run.

My wife and I try to see every art museum we can on our road trips. This museum is quite modern and spacious. We liked the selection of art on display. There were no marquee works that appear in art books but a respectable number of holdings by famous artists. As one might expect, there was a lot of art by those with roots in Indiana.

Came for the gallery not Lume.
I dont think I have ever been so disappointed in an art gallery.
Huge building with sparce collection of art, or at least thats the way it seems with the amount of space give to most pieces, the place seems half empty. Oversized cabinets for one piece of porcelain, allegedly very old but unknown producer.
Luckily only $8 entrance for seniors.
Modern art, some ok, others, well! a long piece of red string fixed to the wall then the floor and a pile of blankets.
A Van Gogh as in ONE, was best thing
Left the inside and went to the garden, a ridiculously long way round to get outside. Not impressed really and not what I was expecting. Not much sculpture and part closed off for works. Left and saw the large fountain at entrance and a couple of pieces of sculpture by the car park.

As native Chicagoans, it may sound sacrilegious to say that the Indianapolis Museum of Art is as interesting as the more celebrated Art Institute of Chicago. Or even the Metropolitan Art Museum in New York City. But after roaming its galleries for more than two hours, it made for an exhilarating and very entertaining experience. See for yourself. Located at 4000 Michigan Road, at the corner of North Michigan Road and West 38th Street, northwest of Crown Hill Cemetery, in the 152-acre Newfields campus that also houses the Lilly House, the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park and Gardens at Newfields, it is the ninth oldest and eighth largest encyclopedia art museum in the United States. Established in 1883, it covers over 250,000 square feet of exhibition space with a collection that comprises more than 54,000 works. Architect Ambrose Madison Richardson built four buildings on the site--the Krannert Pavilion in 1970, the Clowes Pavilion in 1972, the Showalter Pavilion in 1973 and the Hulman Pavilion in 1990. Significant areas of the collection include Neo-Impressionist paintings, Japanese paintings of the Endo period, Chinese ceramics and bronzes, sculptures and prints by Paul Gauguin, works by J.M.T. Turner, 20th Century modernism pieces by Pablo Picasso, Chagall and Matisse, American Impressionism and Modernism works by Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer and George Inness and 20th Century custom-designed costumes by Chanel, Givenchy and Balmain. Other pieces not to be missed include Aristotle by Jusepe de Ribera, Paul Gauguin's The Flageolet Player on the Cliff and Rembrandt's Self-Portrait. There is so much to see and you don't want to miss any of it.

Went to museum today and loved it! Been to many museums and botanical gardens but this was the best. Can’t wait to see it in bloom!

I came here on a Friday afternoon. There was Admission for the museum but not for the Gardens or The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres. I was able to tour the inside of the lily house, a nicely decorated mansion, and the greenhouse.l, which was small and not that interesting. I then walked to the Nature Park. Since the museum map stats that the Nature Park was opened from dawn to dusk and since I came here at 3:30pm and still wanted to visit the nearby Crown Hill Cementery, which closed at 5pm, I opted to go visit the cemetery and then come back here to visit the Nature Park. When I came back? I was surprised to see the Nature park’s ramp (where you can access without going through the museum) closed off and ask a security about it, who informed me that since the ramp was closed off, the hours of the Nature Park was the same as the museum. I was annoyed that the museum map didn’t say anything about that. So, unfortunately I wasn’t able to go to the Nature Park. At least I was able to visit the greenhouse and the lily house.

Definitely a spring must do in Indianapolis.
The flowers and the grounds are breathtaking, something for everyone!

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to the museum. The timed entry and social-distancing efforts worked well and were not a hindrance in any way.
This museum is well-laid out with plenty of space allowed to enjoy each piece of art. It seemed that there were more opportunities to sit and ponder a work than in many museums.
We were disappointed that some of the spaces were between exhibits, but it gives us good reason to return! I especially enjoyed the Design Arts collection. There was a good balance of unique and quirky pieces mixed with famous pieces of which reproductions can be found.
Overall, a great way to spend a cold February afternoon. Will certainly be going back when the gardens are in bloom!

We took the grandkids to the new Newfields light exhibit thinking it would be pretty nice but were amazed to see the fabulous million light display that everyone-even the grandkids-loved. The lights to music were a hit and the cocoa and occasional fire stations helped us keep warm . Job well done!!!

This museum is surprisingly packed full of classics. So much to see and experience. The Monet and friends LUME was there when I visited and was SPECTACULAR. Excellent day activity for a solo traveler.

Great place to stroll through the gardens, sit by the fountains, see the amazing 1.2 million Winterlights over the holidays, interesting exhibits, unique gift shop, movies under the stars...well worth our membership. Very classy and affordable!

What a great place! It’s a spectacular building filled with beautifully displayed items. Walking through, you’ll find it well organized with helpful docents to answer any questions you might have. Food is available in the main building. There is plenty of free parking, even in the underground parking area. I recommend parking underground because of the gigantic, cleaver palindrome on the corridor walls as you’ll walk into the museum entrance. Are sure you plan enough time to stroll the beautiful gardens for a bit. Don’t miss the greenhouse. Walking to the Lily house takes just a few minutes and is included in the admission price. This was a bit of a let down. You’re there. Take a couple minutes and have a look. It won’t take long. For us the most interesting thing in the house was one of Jay Leno’s vintage automobiles parked in the garage. It’s easy to spend several hours here.

Step into the magic of twinkling lights as you enter Winterlights at Newfields. You must have a reservation & that advises you of the specific time you may enter. Underground parking is a plus at no additional charge & leads you right into the area where you start your walking tour of the property & homes. The beauty & majesty of the light display is amazing & beautiful. The home tour, which is included is also a must see. Creativity abounds as you stroll through the grounds, at your own pace. Several locations for you to buy refreshments if you wish. This is a perfect place to snap a photo to include in next year's holiday cards!

I love visiting this museum and this last time was absolutely beautiful as we toured the Winterlights exhibit. We will definitely be back.

Our first visit to the museum was very enjoyable. We viewed the museum and then saw the Van Gogh immersion show. Both were excellent. We walked into the garden area and toured the Lilly House. It was a pleasant treat. We recommend the museum and hope to visit again.

Enjoyed the museum of Arts.
Lots of art exhibits and the family e joyed the historical sights.
I recommend this sight for family fun and education

Beautiful museum in great location. Staff was very nice... had woman in gift shop who was so sweet (Dominique) . We will be back for sure!

Lot of pieces, some really good, displayed as if this were a warehouse.
GReat garden, specially the Orchids pavillion.

We were blown away by this art complex. So much to see! We spent 5 hours here and just became too tired at the end to really fully explore one of the floors. Sorry, Monet!
Loved the modern art galleries and the special hat exhibit, which would amuse even the youngest patron. The home design exhibit was also very interesting. Honestly, if you think art is boring, come here and discover how wrong you are!
Beautiful gardens to explore and the Lilly House is a bonus. My only complaint was the lack of signage to the Funky Bones display and the late opening time (11 am seems odd to me).

Hubby and I came up from Louisville fir a date day road trip! We were very impressed with the museum and grounds. I especially loved the Lilly House! Can’t wait to visit again and see the flowers in full bloom in the gardens.

My new favorite art museum in the Midwest. Everything done very well.
- Not crowded
- Easy parking
- Beautiful building
- Amazing grounds and walking trails. Bring walking shoes -- one set of trails leads to a lake you can walk around. Saw a very large variety of birds
- Impressive mix of art -- especially liked the fashion, design, and contemporary art
- Beautiful ceiling art in the lobby
- Lots of iconic pieces here
- Big-name artists
- Food and service in the cafe were very good. Outside seating
- Charming outdoor beer garden
- Friendly staff
- Reasonable price

Easy to park, a little tricky to figure out where to begin once you are in. Monet was amazing for the entire family. Life size frame photo opportunity at the end was so cool. it was a fun way to spend the day.

Daughters took many pictures that will last a lifetime. Interesting tour and walk, not my favorite yet my daughters and wife loved it.

The Lume immersive exhibit was worth our visit. Even if you don't consider yourself well versed on Vincent Van Gogh this experience will most likely allow you to appreciate his work. Be sure to purchase your ticket in advance and make your way to the 4th floor. You can take a seat on the floor, prop yourself against a wall or walk through the digital display. Be prepared to look at the floor and every wall within your sight. Take a moment to adjust because of the lights and movement. You may walk in during the middle or end of the presentation so be sure to see the entire exhibit. Don't forget to "Van Gough yourself" at the selfie stations. I appreciated the innovative and immersive experience and recommend it if you are at all interested.

Fantastic experience. Great galleries and collections. Gardens were a hit. Definitely take the walk over to the JK Lilly House.
Nicely done!

We went to the Christmas Light show. This is a great place with beautiful lights accompanied by Nutcracker Music. We went inside the Lilly Home and viewed the paper decorations inside, which were quite incredible. They have a shop inside the Museum of Art and Hot Chocolate, Hot Cider. Make sure to wear coats as the weather is cold.

Stopped in Indianapolis overnight on a longer roadtrip just to visit the art museum and see their Edward Hopper exhibition. We'd visited the art museum on a previous trip and loved it! The art collection is top-notch. Their design gallery is superb. The outdoor sculptures are terrific. And they bring in wonderful exhibitions. Previously we enjoyed the Audubon exhibition. And on this visit the Edward Hopper and the American Hotel did not disappoint. We spent the majority of our visit examining the paintings and the related artificts and talking about Hopper and his wife traveling the country by car and our own similar travels with our families and as a couple. Also enjoyed the Turner watercolors exhibit and the glass gallery. And we strolled through a couple of the European galleries to see some of our favorites. As always, we wish we had more time at the museum. Two visits and it leaves us hungry to return again when travels permit!

Wow. What a highlight of our ongoing mission of visiting America’s art museums. We were limited in how much we could view as portions were closed due to preparation Winterlights. In fact we didn’t do any of the grounds or the Lily home. Yet we still spent the better part of the day, particularly due to the expansive and excellent contemporary art collection (although gladly did not have to wait for our 45 seconds of Infinitely Kusama). The American Art collection is excellent as is the European Art, which was also not fully available. Indianapolis should be very proud and grateful for this excellent asset.

My mom and I came here to enjoy a day off of working, and we were having a great time until we actually got inside into the exhibits. My mom was wearing a backpack and everyone we talked to at check-in, and even the info booth that is right in front of the doorway to the first exhibit room, were very nice. As we got to see the first exhibit a guard came up to my mom telling her she needed to wear her backpack on the front of her like a baby, because he said he didn't want her bumping into an exhibit. For one my mom is over 60, and second who wears a backpack on the front of them??!! This was so ridiculous, but my mom willing held her backpack to the side of her in one hand and we went on, then suddenly another lady came and said we couldn't have the backpack with us at all while there were several others with their backpacks and purses on them. We finally said to the lady you know what we are leaving and she was smiling saying Oh! okay then have a nice day! like she wasn't fazed by how she made us feel. The security here are extremely rude! Don't go here if you want to monitored like you are 2! Never going here again!

My teen and I spent the afternoon at Newfields and had a lovely time. Between the art museum, the Lilly house, and the gardens there is enough to do to spend several meandering hours here.

we visited for winterlights. first buy your tickets online. you will save alot of money. this place is really neat. you could see a big difference of stuff added for the second year. my wife loved the beer that was availble. a must see in indy

This lovely historic icon was a great adventure for me and my date. I would have gone alone too. There is so much to see and if offers so much to see and do.

One of my favorite places to go with my husband. There is always something new to see and it is never overcrowded so you have time to walk around and enjoy everything. The gardens are beautiful also.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art is an encyclopedic art museum that is the cornerstone of Newfields, a 152-acre campus that also houses Lily House, the Gardens at Newfields, the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park and the Bear Garden. Located at the corner of North Michigan Road and West 38th Street, northwest of Crown Hill Cemetery, about three miles north of downtown Indianapolis, it is the ninth oldest and eighth largest encyclopedic museum in the United States. Its permanent collection represents cultures from all over the world, spans over 5,000 years and comprises of over 54,000 works, including African, American, Asian and European. Significant areas are neo-impressionist paintings, Japanese paintings of the Edo period, Chinese ceramics and bronzes, South Pacific, ancient art of the Mediterranean, American paintings and sculpture, works by J.M.W. Turner and paintings, sculptures and prints by Paul Gauguin. The textile and fashion art collection is made up of 7,000 items, including 20th century custom designed costumes by Givenchy, Chanel and Balmain. Notable pieces include an Imperial Russian court dress by designer Charles Frederick Worth and a Ming Dynasty silk panel. The Van Gogh exhibit is gone but Monet's vivid colors and Rembrandt's self-portrait remain on display. Also works by Cezanne, Picasso, O'Keeffe, Hopper, Calder, LeWitt, Sherman, Lichtenstein, Chagall and Matisse. Also view the galleries of art from Asia, ancient Greece, South America and beyond.

This is a great little museum, beautifully designed with attractive displays. I love the contemporary art. And the grounds are vast, beautifully landscaped, and a great relief on a hot day.

I enjoyed my time here. If I lived in Indy I would become a member. Nice cross section of Art. Beautiful building which allows for great spaces for presentations.
The grounds are wonderful. Much to do and see. On a nice day you could easily spend 4 hours or more walking around.
I toured the Lilly House , the greenhouse and everything in between those areas. It was a beautiful day and the grounds are very serene.

Five stars, easy. Enjoyed the amazing art collection. Spent 3.5 hours seeing the art and van Gosh Lume exhibit. Teens to late 40-year olds loved it and all gave it five stars. Very nice and really glad we went.

The best part of the IMA is the surrounding grounds and sculpture gardens. Interesting that the Virginia Fairbanks Art and Nature Park (100 acres) is free while admission is charged for the Museum. Really unique and quirky artwork with nie hiking trails on the west side of the Central Canal. The museum itself is nice but not really on par with other cities free facilities like New York, Philly, Chicago, or St. Louis.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this gallery. It was some wonderful paintings - some I knew, some I was unfamiliar with. The gallery is well laid out, the staff were helpful, the cafe surprisingly tasty and the gardens were lovely. .

We came for the day time Harvest Day and had a great time. Pumpkins and gourds everywhere and plenty of things to see walking around. We'll be back for other events in the year so the membership was well worth it.

The museum has a wonderful exhibit going on through the end of August. Summer Wonderland is an invasion of recycled plastic animals all across their beautiful grounds and in some areas of the museum as well. We had a great day there with our grown children and our almost two year old grandson. Great way to introduce the next generation to the IMA/Newfields and to art in general. A stop at the beer garden along the way doesn't hurt either. The exhibit is included with the general admission price.

Drove an hour and a half to get to the museum to see the advertised million and a half lights in the outdoor display. The light displays were wonderful and well above expectations. The entire operation is first-class and well organized from ticket taking to foods to even wood fire warming stations. It is well worth the trip and admission price to see such tastefully done light displays.

Loved seeing all of the beautiful art and seeing all the families out enjoying the great outdoors at the Lilly House too. A great place to spend the day! The grounds are so beautiful and I would love to see them again in another season.

They never have anything worth seeing. Has become an attraction for nickel and dimeing tourists rather than a place to experience art.

IMA is now called Newfiels. They are re-branding to include the other features on their campus in addition to the art museum itself. The museum is the main draw, but if the weather is nice, definitely take a stroll around the grounds and check out the beautiful gardens. Many people in Indianapolis are upset because they started charging admission for this museum, after being free for several years. But note- low income families can apply for a $2 "Access pass" that is good for all museums in Indianapolis!

This Art museum has everything for early American art to modern art. Also has collections of early american furniture. Plan on spending a good portion of your day hear if you enjoy art or even just interested.

Newfields is the name for this complex of art museum, gardens, sculpture garden, and estate, and the art is why we came. It is one of the most impressive collections I've seen, and I'm a worldwide art museum traveler. Its strong suit is the newly installed galleries that display objects in a fresh, unexpected context, not strictly chronological or geographical. You'll see an antique Flemish tapestry right next to a giant 2000s African artist's tapestry made of bottle caps. This kind of thing can work or not, depending on how well reasoned the presentation is--and it works, consistently. The wall text also took on important issues surrounding art acquisition and display, like colonialism and the move to repatriate artworks. Should pieces stay or go back? Is a ceramicist born in 1980 the same caliber as as an Old Master? The viewer has a lot to think about. Good cafeteria too.

Smallish museum (easy to see in a few hours) with an interesting collection of art ranging from very modern/contemporary to 1800s Americana. Enjoyed taking photos in front of the LOVE sculpture, the giant blue plastic snail and seeing some great Ash Can School and other early 1800s American art and genre paintings including a Norman Rockwell and Childe Hassan. Wandered around the gardens and grounds a bit, likely they'd be more interesting in the summer. The greenhouse was nice but very small. A nice way to spend an afternoon! Free parking and a cafe.

We had planned to go to the gardens but the weather didn't cooperate. We spent the day going to the art museum. If you want to read all the notes with the prints and statutes it will take at least a couple of days. A large selection of painters works. Also a large selection of items from the middle ages and earlier

Enjoyed this museum. Convenient with easy parking. Entrance with student discounts and reasonable. Clean and modern. Enjoyed the Lilly house, apple computers, modern furniture.
, gift shop and the “love” statue for pics outside. So much to do. Highly recommended for families.

The art museum is now referred to as Newfields which includes the Lily House and gardens. Of course now they have The Lume which currently features the Van Gogh immersion event. This was the event we paid to see. This is on the fourth floor and includes several rooms that project images of Van Gogh’s stunning work in a loop. We were here for an hour absorbing the beautiful images on the walls and on the floor. It’s $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers plus a small handling fee. We felt it was a good value in itself but this also includes the permanent art collection plus the Lily House and gardens. Since it was cold and rainy we skipped the Lily House and gardens(seen it several years ago) but enjoyed the permanent exhibits. When you consider other cities are charging more for this event alone you can appreciate the real value of seeing the permanent art collection along with the Van Gogh immersion event. I do have one bone to pick. As we were the first ones to see this when the museum opened at 11:00 am on a cold and rainy day the staff left us out in the cold and pouring rain until exactly 11:00 am. I guess rules are rules as one person said waiting in the rain with my wife and I. Still I can’t see why they couldn’t at least allow us in the lobby to keep us from getting drenched. Considering there were a number of senior citizens(I among them I must confess) stuck in the cold and pouring rain I felt that was rather unfeeling. Others with me thought the same. Once admitted inside those of us who had tickets to The Lume were instructed to proceed to the fourth floor, however, once we reached the second floor by escalator a staff member demanded to know if we checked in downstairs first. The woman in front of us could barely disguise her frustration and anger when she had to explain we were instructed to go directly to the fourth floor. The Van Gogh immersion event and the price was well worth it. We can’t say the same for some of the staff. We have memberships to other art museums that treat us well.

We recently visited here to enjoy the “Winterlights” outdoor holiday lights display, catching it on its final night. There was plentiful free parking, and restrooms were available at two locations after entering. We choose a 5:00 p.m. entry time and walked through it all again once it got dark. The display had an easy-to-follow one-way loop, with staff members available all along the path to guide you around. The grounds were very pretty, with many of the garden’s huge trees fully covered with lights from top to bottom. The Libby estate, with all the bottom-floor rooms adorned with hand-made decorations, was fun to walk through; the highlight was the expansive, music-coordinated display on the estate’s front lawn. Throughout the garden, there were fire pits and snacks for sale, including S’mores, beverages, cookies, and popcorn. We were required to wear a mask at the entrance and inside the Libby house, but otherwise they were optional. We enjoyed our visit here very much.

The museum is large and has a wide variety of exhibits plus traveling exhibits. The Lilly house is an excellent example of an historic mansion from the early 1900s. Be sure to visit the Lilly house, not just the art museum

This lighting display combined with music and other activities made a trip to Winterlights absolutely wonderful. What gorgeous lighting displays! This is definitely a visit we will make again next winter.

Lovely visit and we really enjoyed the greenhouse down by the Lilly house. I wish it was open a little later as we didn't quite get through the floors in the time we had.

I used to visit many years ago, but we have been away from Indianapolis for over 13 years. Upon our return, we visited again. It is under a different management, now renamed Newfield's. There have been some internal renovation, and there have been some new collections and exhibits.
Recently, we visited to see the Japanese designer clothing by Miyake and his contemporaries. It was very well curated.
I have forgotten that this museum has a wonderful collection of Impressionist paintings, and I had forgotten about some pieces of El Greco. The Oriental Ceramics exhibit is amazing. On a recent visit, I saw some new pieces on the third floor.
The grounds are wonderful. I return just to walk the grounds and take pictures of the flowers.
While I would not rank this in the same caliber as The Art Institute of Chicago or the Metropolitan Museum of New York, nevertheless, I feel Indianapolis should be proud to have an Art Museum of this quality.

I liked the museum it was nice a lot of things to see and a lot of things to learn. I recommend everybody to pay a visit to Indiana museum.

In addition to some great art work, I really enjoyed the modern furniture exhibit. In the summer the grounds and beer garden are a must see.

Rude, obnoxious and stuffy folks at the door. The greeter reminded me of the snobby (whites only) country clubs of the 50’s America. Our group got a 10 minute lecture about preregistering for tickets since clearly people who show up are “not worthy” of entry. We left and spent our time elsewhere. A ROTTEN EXPERIENCE!

We were in Indianapolis and decided to see the Monet and Friends special show at The Lume at Newfields Art Museum. If you buy a ticket for Monet, you can visit the art at Newfields for no extra charge. They also participate in the Reciprocal Gardens program if you have a membership elsewhere. The Monet show plus the museum itself are great choices. The grounds are nice to walk around and see the various small gardens there. While there, you can tour the Libby house (the owners that donated this property to the city). Although none of these parts take a huge amount of time, I would allow 2-3 hours to see it all in one visit. The grounds are pretty shady so you are not in the direct sun constantly. Just a suggestion that we noticed …if you go right when they open, you will be in a line to get inside. Wait until a little while after opening, and you could probably walk right in. When we left early afternoon, people that were arriving were able to just go right in. Bags are inspected as you enter and staff or volunteers are handy around the building if you have questions. Nice place to visit!

Last visited. The museum 26 years ago. Lists of great improvements and additions. Free parking and plenty of WiFi.

IMA has changed many times over the years. We went for the Christmas lights show this year. It was absolutely gorgeous and visually spectacular. There was a lot of technology involved, but the artist's vision was what really made it special. The grounds of IMA are lovely and parking was no problem.

First, the grounds are still beautiful. The museum still has a very large and interesting collection. But my family was very disappointed to learn, after the fact, that you cannot access the Fairbanks art and nature park directly from the museum campus. You have to either leave and drive down the road to a different place or walk 3/4 of a mile to get there. The worst part was there was nothing that told you that. In fact, signs all over the garden still pointed the way to the Fairbanks nature park. So imagine the disappointment in the kids when we walked down all those steps only to be greeted by a gate with a deadbolt lock and no information about how to access the nature park. It just appeared to us that the nature park was closed which brought my son to tears because after going through a museum of not being able to run around and touch anything, he was really looking forward to the sculptures in the nature park.
Overall, the museum and grounds are still nice. But do be warned despite all the signage, you can't get to the art and nature park from the museum campus itself.

Amazing art and a beautiful property to walk around. Highly recommend visiting! I LOVED the Van Gogh piece!!! Some really unique pieces of art, lots of light and lots of room to walk around.
I would not take young kids here.

I came to see the William Rice exhibit of woodblock prints (which was small, but excellent) and then toured the rest of the museum. They have some wonderful paintings, but my favorite area was the Contemporary Design permanent exhibit. Wonderfully laid out, with terrific stuff on display. You might wonder how something as lowly as an adding machine or pitcher can be displayed, but their design is what makes it interesting. A fun way to spend a couple hours. Recommended.

Lots of exhibits and there are gardens and other properties on site to visit. There is a cafe if you get hungry.

If you are an art lover - and that includes the landscaping and gardens - this is a super way to spend the day. They also have great seasonal attractions.

Great ethic art from Africa and Asia. Lots of masks and tribal art from all over Africa. Most collected by Mr Eiteljorg. They also had lots of Japanese swords.

Walked through Christmas lights on grounds then visited gift shop. The lights were amazing, timed to music reaching so high and wide. Absolutely stunning. I intend to make this a tradition! The guides were very pleasant and informative. Afterwards purchased a gorgeous coral poinsettia. It is still gorgeous (5 months later!)

I spent a Saturday with some friends wandering the museum and the surrounding grounds on sort of a photo day. We had a lot of fun. My personal highlights were the African exhibits and the furniture exhibits. They didn't mind us photographing things as long as we didn't use a flash.
We spent a few hours in the Art Museum and a couple house outside wandering around. I imagine the place is beautiful in the spring. I'll have to make a trip back down and check it out.

I'm not a big art enthusiast but my husband is so we made an afternoon of it. We spent about 4 hours there and I was actually interested in what they had. 4 floors of different styles and an outside area with gardens, trails and the Lily House.

IMA has an excellent and very large collection. I focused on the contemporary and modern collection and was very impressed. What is exceptional about IMA, is that in addition to the main complex, the museum is situated on 100 acres of park, including sculpture gardens, AND the Lilly country home, with extensive formal and informal gardens. What a treat!!!!!

This was a treasure to visit. Not only do you have the opportunity to explore the main building with beautiful art from various time periods but the grounds, gardens, greenhouse, and beer garden for a refreshment (alcohol and non-alcohol) and pretzel. We stayed for 5-hours but felt we could have lingered there longer.

I recently went to this museum with some out of town guests. I have been to this museum a few years back so this trip was enjoyable. I need to go back since I
did not see everything. This is a place that requires at least two or three visits
to see everything that it has to offer. I enjoyed the many paintings that have
you stop and study every inch of the art. Great place to hang out!!

Beautiful gardens, trails and art! Very well marked to get around the grounds. Clean. Interesting history. Enjoyed the beer garden.

First off, if you live in or near Indianapolis, definitely worth an annual family membership. We had a few hours to spare between a morning wedding ceremony/luncheon and the evening reception so we thought we'd check it out. Several interesting special exhibits including the photography of George Platt Lynes. Loved the hats of Bes-Ben and several pieces of contemporary art on the 4th floor. Spent close to two hours inside the museum but could have easily spent another hour or two.

This is a minor museum, but worth visiting. The African art section is excellent, and well displayed. The paintings include some beautiful ones by overlooked European artists like Giuseppe de Nittis. Their collection of modern art glass is wonderful.

We visited here on our trip from Urbana to Greenfield, parking in their underground garage, passing their security and walking up to the 1st floor. After paying $40 for 2 seniors, we took the escalator to the 2nd floor to encircle the ~1 acre of exhibit halls with European & American Art, then up the escalator to the 3rd floor to do the same with African Art, Asian Art and a vast Design Gallery. After 3 hours, we passed on their 4th floor Dali-’LUME’ at an extra cost and returned down the escalators to the 1st floor cafe and gift shop. After the restroom, the hall continues to the extensive gardens which include the 1903 22 room mansion. Great museum.

We usually come here for winter lights and decided to try the Halloween nights. It was really neat. Boy is there a lot of pumpkins. Not giving anything away but you will love the house. Make sure you get your tickets online

Wonderful selection of fine art with many of the masters on display. Spent over two hours just on the second floor. Enjoyed the cafe and the wonderful gift shop as well as the visit to the Lilly house. A very respectable showing for a city the size of Indianapolis. Well done!

Friends suggested a visit to IMA to get some culture in on our visit to Indiana. What a stunning place! Beautiful, clean, friendly and GREAT VALUE! Even my salad in the cafe was a work of art! That said, I’m a big fan of European art and particularly Turner. There’s plenty of that and more, more, More of other great stuff inc. modern and historical! Filling the whole day was easy....and I’d happily go back again. Well done IMA, Indianapolis and USA! We Brits + 1French and the Hoosiers too just loved it!

You will owe t to yourself to view the outside grounds all around the Museum. Take the walk all the way to the canal in the back, and the wooded area around. And take your time near the canal, you will see people fishing, jogging, walking, and just enjoying the area on a sunny or wintery day.

Beautiful museum, easy to get around and love the various art displays especially Edward Hopper. Ate at the cafe , very good! Beautiful museum shop!

The Indianapolis Museum of Art collection is housed in a beautiful space that is open, large, and very easy to navigate. Many people like the Lume, which is an interactive exhibit now exploring the work of Salvador Dali. We enjoyed the very strong collections of nonWestern, modernism and contemporary art. Superb collection that is quite large... if you want to see everything, plan on several hours. The museum is located at Newfields, offering large gardens in which you stroll during your visit.

We visited the museum to see a traveling show on Edward Hopper and his interest in painting hotel rooms.
Well thought out- the show weaves a narrative about his work and travels throughout the U.S. in mid- century
Hopper himself took several long driving trips- including some that took him to Mexico
Worth seeing

Lovely museum and gardens. Didn’t get to the gardens as we had a plane to catch. Have to go back for that. The Salvador Dali special exhibition was wonderful and the watercolors by him - wow.

Newfields dates to 1883 when an exhibition of 453 works by 137 artists opened at the English Hotel on the downtown Indianapolis Circle, the first exhibition organized by the Art Association of Indianapolis. In 1969, the newly named Indianapolis Museum of Art moved from its longtime home on the campus of the John Herron Art Institute at 16th and Pennsylvania to a new building at 38th Street and Michigan Road. Today, it is part of the 152-acre Newfields campus, which includes one of the largest art museums in the country, an historic mansion, lush landscaping and gardens, performance space for films, concerts and lectures, art galleries, an art and nature park, wetlands, woodlands and outdoor sculptures. Discover a world of color, beauty and adventure only minutes from downtown Indianapolis. Located at 4000 Michigan Road, at 38th Street, Newfields is open from 11 to 5 on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday and 11 to 8 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The centerpieces of the campus are the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Lilly House and the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park. Other focal points on the grounds are 100 Acres, the Gardens at Newfields and the Madeline F. Elder Greenhouse and Beer Garden. The 22-room Lilly House, also known as Oldfields, is a 26-acre estate and house museum that was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003 and is a rare example of a surviving American Country Placed Era estate.

Wonderful light display and tour of the Lilly House on the grounds. Hot coco or cider, smores, beautiful lights on a outdoor walking tour. It was very fun!

Having visited close to 400 art museums in the USA and having studied museum collections throughout the country and world, I can honestly say that The Indianapolis Museum of Art (Newfields) is one of the better art museums in the USA. You can easily argue that it is in the top 20 in America. This is a must visit for art lovers. They have a strong American and European painting collection! The Divisionist collection as well as the works of Gauguin and the Point-Aven School is very strong!

We went for The Lume Van Gogh immersive experience and had the best time! It was incredible! The rest of the art museum was wonderful, too. We had lunch here at the Cafe. Very fresh and generous portions. Our tickets included the Lilly House which is a beautiful 5 minute walk from the museum. Highly recommend!

The architecture is modern and beautiful, its large, they say 152 acres of gardens, an outdoor park. They have free parking, an early 20th century estate, some great Tiffany, and they estimate 54,000 wors of art.

We really enjoyed this museum, inside and out. Visited the areas inside that we wanted see, had a really good lunch in their face (heirloom tomato caprese salad) and then went out into the grounds. The gardens were beautiful and the Lily House was very interesting. I especially liked that the kitchen area was open. The entire property is quite large, but the paths are pretty flat and easily walked. A couple of areas outside are not wheelchair accessible. For us it was well worth the cost.

The greenhouse has the most amazing collection of orchids I had ever seen. Be sure to make a stop at both the greenhouse and the Lilly House as you wander around the gardens. At the art museum, allow some time to see the amazing show on the ceiling on the upper level while relaxing in comfortable chairs. You will enjoy every minute at Newfields both inside and outside.

Lots of changing exhibits so it is always different throughout the year.
The gardens are excellent any time of year.
Have traveled the world visiting art museums and this is a gem in Indy!

We recently had our wedding at the IMA (Newfields now) and could not have been more pleased with the experience. From the catering and staff to the garden ceremony and champagne toast on the bridge, we could not have picked a better place to get married in Indianapolis. Thank you to the staff and all those involved who made our day special for us and our guests. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND this venue to anyone and I would be happy to answer any of your questions.

This museum is not as large as other museums that I've been to like the Vatican or Uffizi in Italy or even the Cleveland Museum. However, it has a lot to show considering its smaller size. For a local museum I was definitely impressed. Im also pleased that its so well put together and enjoyed the layout and how quickly I was able to get through. We also felt the descriptions were informative and not too long. We also liked that the gift shop was different the second go and the cafeteria was well kept and the lady staffing it was very helpful

It's 100 acres with a beautiful 35 acre lake, has a wooded area, hiking trails, Lilly country home. If it was May the gardens are my favorite part of the tour; but its not, so I prefer the inside and the the two floors of art.

This place was AMAZING! And art museum and gardens - unique and terrific. We were visiting from Wisconsin and i loved this place. Looks like they do a Halloween event and Christmas lights. Oh, and there is also a historic house to visit but was closed for holiday decor. There are many different kinds of art, several hands on engagement things for kids. The garden, even though it is past peak season, was beautiful. Still some colors and fountains going.

There is so much to see and do at IMA that it is hard to decide what to mention first. They have areas especially for children, Impressionist art, the old masters, folk art and western art, they also have lectures. You could easily spend a day exploring the grounds and picnicking. They also have greenhouses.

4 stories of art- SO MUCH to see! The mechanized reverse-umbrella-like flowers in the foyer were very pretty and unique. It was a rainy day, but we also enjoyed the short walk to the greenhouse.

This is a beautiful museum. I could have wandered for hours. It was too cold to spend any time outdoors so I can’t wait to go back and see those exhibits as well.

Visited the museum with my preteen daughter. Had a great time, there is something art wise for everyone to love. Staff were very hospitable and we plan on coming back again next time we visit Indy.

The best feature of this museum and its idiosyncratic advantage is the external large and artistically designed are and sculptures. The Love piece reminded me of Philadelphia’s Love. A wonderful setting to pose with a beloved one, or with kids. I deeply appreciated the turn of 19/20th century collection, specially the Matisse paper cut outs and impressionist section. I only had two hours; therefore I’ll have to come back and enjoy the Love sculpture again!

I have so much to explore, but I will say the galleries are all amazing and the workers are friendly. It's clean and the immersive displays are completely worth the money. I've seen Van Gogh and will be seeing Dali this April. Can't wait for summer so I can try the Summer Nights Film Series. IMO the membership is also worth the price.

Our group came to the museum on a Saturday afternoon. The art collection is housed in a large spacious modern building. There are several sections featuring a wide range of art from early American to modern art. There is a mix of paintings, sculptures, glass, and others. We spent about two hours exploring the galleries, and could have used some extra time to more thoroughly view all the rooms.

Amazed and surprised by the extent of this collection, exploring room after room on each floor. Unfortunately, the day I visited it was raining, windy and cold and so didn't get to see the gardens and spring bulbs in bloom but did venture out to the Lilly house (using umbrellas provided) and enjoyed that as well.

The museum has a good art collection for its size and there are many stations for kids activity and creativity. You need a whole day to truly enjoy the museum. I had my 4 year old daughter with me and I spent two half days. She would not feel like coming out, even though she was tired.
The art museum is located next to the former mansion of Josiah Lilly and its beautiful gardens overlooking White River. You can walk to the Lilly House and the adjacent garden. The mansion has been restored and turned into a museum itself. There are trails down the hill from Lilly House going through the woods leading to White River.

Thankful to have a wonderful experience exploring the museum, Lilly house and park grounds while grounded in Indy due to the global system outage. My flight home from Boston to Seattle landed me in Indy for the weekend. A nice collection of european and american art, ancient african art and a few pieces from well known artist to anchor this nice museum.

I wish I had more time here! I would recommend you make this a 2 day visit so you can explore all the inside and outside! We loved the areas we did explore and I want to come back!! We had a GREAT time in the kids activity center with arts and crafts and interactive fun. The art is truly exquisite and the grounds simply well done!! A LOT of love, attention and detail went into creating this wonderful place! It’s so far one of my favorite art museums in the USA!

I have to admit that I didn’t have high expectations when we decided to visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art. As it turns out I was very impressed by the venue, staff, organization and collection. This is a museum you need to see.
The venue sits in a beautiful park-like setting that is part-museum / part-botanical garden. We didn’t have sufficient time to explore this area; next time.
One other thing I liked; in each gallery there are a couple of random chairs. So if you want to sit down and absorb a painting, they make it easy.
The IMA is easy to find, albeit a bit off the beaten path. Follow your GPS. It was crowded the day of our visit. Apparently, but not surprisingly, this is a wedding / event venue as well.
You need to give this museum a minimum of a couple of hours of your time.

This museum has plenty to see whether you're an adult or bringing your child! There are many gorgeous works of art but one of my favorite pieces was the projection ceiling. It was a nice place to sit and think about the surroundings.

went for the annual orchid show and sale. So many unique, beautiful orchids on display and for sale. Everyone is so nice and helpful Visited a few other exhibits as well. The museum typically has a special exhibit(s). We travel from Cinti to visit, it is just that good. Will go back for the gardens and hats exhibits.

This is a truly lovely area...enjoyed visiting the art museum. It is not large but it is well-curated with great exhibits on a wide range of areas. The art museum's gift shop is exceptionally good. Due to time constraints, I didn't have time to visit the other attractions here but I did enjoy a nice walk around the beautiful surrounding gardens. Would love to return!

Really a wonderful surprise to have a museum of this quality and size in Indianapolis. There is far too much to tell you about here so definitely go Newfields Museum. Galleries with Van Goghs, Picasso, and many stunning impressionist and other styles of paintings. Asia and Ancient Europe exhibits featuring Ming vases, Shogun warrior armours, jadeite carvings and ancient Greek marble sculptures were beautiful and awesome. The Design Gallery with modern and conceptual furniture was fantastic! Fabric and Clothing gallery was also amazing. Modern and Conceptual art galleries were fun to experience. Gift shop is nice and all staff are very friendly and helpful. We spent 2 1/2 hours there one day and then went back to see the other 2 floors a couple of days later. If you really want to see and enjoy this wonderful museum. Then you should plan to make a day of it and have lunch at the cafe!

This is a nice, attractive, museum. Some good art intelligently laid out. Unfortunately a lot of the space seemed devoted to museum staff and events; not the exhibition of art. Nevertheless I enjoyed the visit and will return. Nice gift shop with a lot of imports from China but some US produced items. No explanation as to why it is called Newfields as opposed to Indianapolis Museum of Art. Is it a marketing gimmick ? Visiting from Houston I have no problem visiting a museum bearing the name of the City where it is located and a city where I presume it derives most of its support.

Awesome collection of a wide variety of styles & periods. Something for everyone that loves art from primitive to post modern.
A great day at the museum
Thoughtfully curated museum, expansive collection, really lovely and varied collection of all forms of art. Particularly partial to the paintings. Labeling could be clearer, but overall a great day spent at the museum
