We recently went on the five mile driv. It was so pretty! There were also TONS of raccoons! Definitely worth a drive if you just finished from a day at the zoo.

Great place to go running. Tons of great trails in a heavily wooded area with alot of view points along the way. You get on the trails and you feel completely disconnected from the city. Dog friends and kid friendly. If you have a stroller stay on the road, otherwise check out the trails. Lots to see and do!

I have been a frequent walker/jogger on variations of The Sound to Narrows runs (14 years) and Saturday morning jogs (4 years) and always have to stop and enjoy the views in spite of the urge to keep running. Every run is a different experience. Rain or shine, it's a beautiful trip in one of the best places in Western Washington.

I have worn out many a pair of trail shoes in this park. I live just a few blocks from it and I walk daily to the park and put in about 3 to 5 miles a day in the trail system. I also have an annual zoo membership so I visit the animals several days a week also. If you like the beach, there are several miles of it for beachcombing as well as rental boats and fishing gear. This is just a great place to spend time, either alone or with family and friends.

Great drive especially in a Sunday. Saw several raccoons including a family of four. Beautiful area with lots to explore.

A few years ago I would walk the 5-mile drive in preparation of the 3-day breast cancer walk. I've continued to frequent the drive - especially during the mornings when no cars are allowed. The trails are marked well and the vegetation lush. It's a great place to 'get away' from the business of life.

This Tacoma park located in the Puget Sound is just beautiful and so nice I would be willing to pay a small entrance fee. Beautiful all year round too, I like to go in the Summer or in the rainy season/winter. If biking a tiny hill or upgrade here and there, if running lookout for the raccoons. If visiting from out of town a great spot for a picnic and to take pics.

One of the most beautiful and breathtaking drives I have ever been on. Used to go once or twice a month. So depressed it will be permanently closed. Just completely heartbroken. Feel so blessed I had alot of opportunity to drive there alot in last year as so close to home.

Easy and inexpensive way to spend time outside with friends or family. I did a lot of walking with my two boys and they were entertained the whole time.

Tacoma has one of the most beautiful parks around in Point Defiance. Not only does it have gorgeous rose gardens, picnic sites, beach, hiking trails, and a zoo but it also boasts the most gorgeous drive through tall timbers providing scenic views of the sound at each bend. We’ve experienced wildlife throughout the 5 Mile Drive. It’s a must see!

Wonderful forest drive with scenic pull-outs to view bay and islands, picnic areas, and clean bathrooms.

I love walking the dogs on the trails, riding my bike around 5 mile drive and the promenade between the boathouse and Owens Beach. But wait! There's more! A zoo, rose garden, rhododendron garden, off leash dog park - the list is endless. This park is a treasure. Anyone who visits from out of town should put it on their must do list.

Visited the drive this past weekend. Beautiful can't wait to bring my family back to see. Loved all the drift wood that was washed ashore and the beautiful area.

Nice drive to go on and do some Geo Caching. Views are great just watch out for the hikers and bikers while on the drive.

What a lovely drive. So relaxing. You can park and hike on the trails. You will see different animals. Spring fills the drive with beautiful colors. It is a hand holding experience.

Absolutely breathtaking views, the roses are gorgeous, many, many wildlife out in their natural habitat. Beautiful views of the Puget Sound.

Beautiful and relaxing drive through dense fir trees, beautiful views of the sound. You might see some deer and raccoon as it starts to go towards sunset.

I love flowers, roses and here is a place so beautiful!! I would recommend this to everyone who loves flowers!

I don't know how many cities have this kind of wilderness park in the city limits, but in any case Tacoma is lucky to be so blessed. Just the drive through the old growth forest is interesting, even if you don't walk any trails. You can also go down to the beach and walk it unless the tide is in. Great place.

Always a nice way to spend a lazy sunday when you want to get out in nature a bit but can't muster the motivation to go on an all-out hike.
The resident raccoons are experts at giving the sad puppy-dog eyes to beg for food. They've been conditioned by visitors giving food to them sadly. I've seen other vehicles not treated so nicely by them after giving them food they didn't like or didn't have enough of.
Would say not to risk it, if you're not ok with wild animals joining you in your car. Just a thought.

Lovely place for family, lots of hiking trails. Lots of wildlife. Get place to take a pet for a nice walk. Hiking even in the rain is a pleasure with the dense canopy.

The drive has got plenty of view. Just stop by at any place and enjoy the excellent view of beaches or parks.

This is such a great place to either bicycle, drive, run or walk! Should not be missed if you're visiting Tacoma!

A plethora of eye candy while viewing the cultivated gardens (be sure to check out the native plants garden along with Asian, roses, etc.) blue and yellow marked trails have maps spaced all along so you're unlikely to get lost. We enjoyed the 5+ miles we walked. Both trails are easy, flat, nicely cleared. Bring water. Unless it's raining there's very little of that available on your hike. Enjoy!

Want to spend the afternoon in a big park, but don't want to leave the city? Visit Point Defiance. From the ocean at Owen's beach, to the gardens or old Fort, and the Forrest trails there is a little something for everyone! Hiking, biking, photography, picnicking, and zoo enthusiasts need to visit this beautiful park. It's a long time favorite with my family and we visit monthly all year long!!

Always a great way to spend some time at Pt. Defiance park. Just recently we viewed some humpback whales from one of the view points. Great for biking. Many fairly easy trails, but watch out for hungry raccoons.

The drive around the park is very peaceful. You go from heavily forested terrain to Owens Beach - the up a steep hill to finish your trip around the park. The views of Puget Sound are spectatular, Make sure you stop at old Ft. Nisqually! It's a great place to let your kids out to run!

5 Mile drive was a lovely excursion that can be a day long if you include hikes, the zoo and the beach, or just a quick detour for the lovely drive through the rain forest.

So beautiful get to see a number of gardens including the rose garden, Japanese garden, open flower gardens and rhododendron garden. Then there are scenic views of the Puget sound, Gig Harbor, and the nearest bridge. So much to do as well. Fort nisqually, Owens beach, dog park and small hiking trails throughout.

This drive is so pretty and chill. Hit the zoo maybe or a ferry ride, do the 5 mile drive and grab some lunch. Ruston way around the corner has some restaurant me with outdoor seating. So many options.

5 Mile drive winds around the edge of Point Defiance park, and gives a glorious view of Puget Sound. Some places, on a good day, one is able to view north towards Seattle, west towards Gig Harbor and the bridge. Sunsets and Sunrises on good days are fantastic. (Caution, PLEASE STAY INSIDE THE FENCE LINE! There are huge drop offs on the outside). Trails off the drive allow one to explore the wonders of the forrest as well as some hidden surprises in the spring. (hint: lovely flowers and fauna).
I could go on, but take some time out from the busieness of the world and visit the park. Let all distractions fall away as you enjoy a moment with nature, and renew your tired spirit.
P.S. while there be sure to stop @ Fort Nisqually and enjoy going back in time to ...
well, find out yourself.

Very clean and well organized. The drive gave both views of forestry and coast line. The roadway is well maintained and there are ample places to access trails for the basic hiker to the more advanced. Nice kept areas for picnics or just pulling over to take in the view of the ocean straights. If you find yourself near Point Defiance this drive is a must..

This has great views of South Puget Sound, Gig Harbor entrance and Vashon Is. Great Hiking Trails and Picnic areas too.

Such a great place! Drive around and see the views, pull over whenever you want to explore. Great views, nice hikes (small or large), and wildlife. Where else are raccoons next to the road?!
Ended the trip with a stop in the gardens. Great flowers, and got to see 4 different wedding party's either getting married or taking pictures.

visit all the time a beautiful place to disconnect and relax. I like the peace and quite of the forest without having to drive 1 to 2 hrs out of town the beach is good for the kiddies to wet their toes.

Nothing beats doing the drive in an electric car, driving silently with the with windows down, listening to the sounds of the forest. Well yes, on a bicycle or walking is even better.

For years we visited and never went the entire way on the drive, but then there was a time when i missed the turn and kept going.....fabulous! Water views, beach, bridge, trails, dog park, fort, great experience for young and old alike, especially awesome if you aren't able to get out of the car, you still get to see so much.

I recently went on Tacoma’s 5 Mile Drive on a beautiful sunny Friday. The outer loop drive is 4.6 miles and passes Owens Beach and Fort Nisqually a Hudson Bay Fur Company outpost that has re-enactments. The drive follows the water of Puget Sound while being in a densely wooded forest. It drive drives is closed to vehicle traffic during certain hours each day so check prior to leaving home. It is very beautiful and scenic, and you can spend an hour or the day there.

We did this drive twice. The second time we took our adult son and he has actually stated he is going to take his friends dog there for a walk to get rid of some energy. We actually saw deer on the side on the road. Beautiful but we didn't see any flowers.

Driving through the woods right in the city is amazing! It is like driving into a fairy tell realm. The forrest is so dense and full of follage that you can only see a few feet into them. The adventures you could have hikinh in the woods!

Located in Point Defiance Park of Tacoma, Wa at the North end of Pearl St, this gem is the deep NW woods portion of the park with an old growth feel. There are both tree canopied paved roads including the 5mile drive with several marine vista points and a beach, or well maintained trails. This is a favorite for runners and walkers. The 20MPH speed limit is strictly enforced. Bicyclists often ride here too but there are not adequate designated lanes (helmets and lights are a must).
When one doesn't have the time to travel an hour to the true Washinton trails, this park provides a pretty good forest escape 15 minutes from my home. I can easily escape suburbia to a Lowland forest every day.
No camping. Free parking. Plan to spend at least an hour. Pick up a trail map just inside the entrance at the info stand. The multiple trails do twist, so a map and compass can be helpful until one becomes famliar with the different trails.
Other attractions in the park are the zoo/aquarium, open areas, picnic tables, playground, boat lainch, ferry, restaurant and Ft Nisqially.

Sadly we arrived on a dreadfully raining day. We drove across the park and stopped for a bit of a walk and then the heavens open up. Would've liked to see more of the actual park.
Really enjoyed Fort Nisqually though.

My trainer took me here for the first time. It was a beautiful 5-mile walk. She brought her son and dogs and we walked Sunday evening while the sun was setting. It was beautiful and the smell of nature was refreshing. We saw raccoons, deer, and seals during our walk. The exciting part was seeing the seals. They were swimming and relaxing as a group at one of the viewpoints. It was worth a walk!

I had a few minutes to drive through in my colleague's convertible after a business lunch. He's a local and very proud of the area - I can see why.
This is a beautiful and well kept park and being able to see it in a convertible made the experience so much better. The smell of this forest is amazing.
The drive offers plenty of good views and areas to stop and take a look.
If I'm able to bring my family to SEA-TAC for a vacation, we'll definitely stop here.

this is a nice drive and walk to see views of the sound. We encountered raccoons and birds on our drive. Nice spots to talk a short stroll through the trees.

Take a city break and take a drive through the dense forest of Defiance Point Park. The trails are great for a run or walk with spectacular overlooks.

The drive is through old growth forest. There are places to stop and picnic.
You will see wildlife, at least squirrels, perhaps deer.
You are looking down upon the Puget Sound and the view is one of a kind. I say pack a small lunch and go for the drive , there are many surprises awaiting you.

Pretty everywhere! Nice drive for seeing what the area has to offer. It's short, and you can circle it repeatedly.

For those who haven't been to Tacoma or just have a few extra minutes this is great drive with beautiful scenery and plenty of places to pull off and enjoy water views.

Did this ride about 4 years ago with my son, a perfect ride for length and distance if you're in moderate shape; lots of great places to stop and rest and enjoy the scenery, especially the fort!

We drive through this after visiting Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. We enjoyed the scenic beauty and would have spent more time here had our son not been getting tired.

This Drive is the best. Even better on a Motorcycle or Bike! Just five minutes out of the City and you are in for a get away treat in five minutes. Solitude!

Wonderful views of the Narrows Bridge and Puget sound waters. lots of trails thru the woods and a tour of Fort Nisqually. bring a camera and binoculars.

Five Mile Drive is a long, wooded oasis attached to the top of Tacoma. Point Defiance was set aside over 100 years ago as our NW version of Central Park.

Located in Point Defiance Park this is a real gem in Tacoma. The drive is beautiful and will last quite a while as the speed limit is about 20 mph. Along the way there are turnouts with plenty of parking to enjoy the views which are worth stopping for! There are plenty of spots for picnics with or without tables. The trails are well groomed but you should stay away from or at least exercise extreme caution on the ones that run along the cliffs that drop to the Puget Sound. Maps are available across from the tennis courts but it is pretty hard to get lost. Trails are marked by colored symbols at trail intersections. Other attractions include the wonderful zoo and aquarium, the beach, Fort Nisqually, and the duck pond (but please don't fee them). It is all very picturesque and fun whether in the car or on foot, any time of year!

It's a beautiful area with many photo opportunities! You can drive, walk, jog, bike...many places to stop, picnic, beach area, zoo, gardens, water, rose garden, island, bridge views and so much more! You'll want to go over and over!

We were on our way from Tacoma to Gig Harbor and stopped here based on T..A. reviews. We walked down to the rose garden and one of the ponds and drove down to the ocean. We were short on time, but could've spent an entire day in this beautiful park. It was breathtaking to see how everything was so green and so...many different varieties of plants, flowers and wildlife. This would be a perfect place for an outdoor picnic.

I was so amazed by the beauty of this place so close to the city of Tacoma. My daughters and I spent about four hours here and we didn't want to ever leave! There is an amazing variety of both flowering and non flowering plants. There is also a large selection, if you slow down to look, of different animals and insects to look at. We saw geese, ducks, deer, rabbits, squirrels, fish and turtles. There were bees, butterflies and a couple of dragon flies. Every where we went the grounds were being maintained but in a quite, peaceful way. There is an amazing stretch of waterfront as well where you can observe some wildlife, fish or wade in the water. We saw off a dock, sea anemones, jelly fish and regular fish as well. You can rent boats and kayaks. It wasn't to busy when we were there but it was a thursday night. I can Imagine that this place gets busy on the weekend and it may be hard to get a parking spot in some areas.

I am a girl who loves to walk and hike, but in the Northwest there are SOOO many places to try that unless some place is really unique I am not really inclined to go back because there are so many other options.... these trails are different.... they are close enough to home (45 minutes) to be reached easily and offer enough difference that I do not get bored and wonder why I went back... there is beach if you want it, paved if you want it, beautiful vistas if you want them, tree lined paths if you want them... all within this area... LOVE it!!!

This is a gorgeous park & drive. There are lots of places to stop for views & picnicing. You need to keep dogs on leashes & be aware that the wildlife - especially the raccoons - are a little too nosy and can become aggressive. DO NOT FEED THEM since this is what has created the problem! There's also a nice beach (Owen's Beach) to enjoy. In the warmer months there is a snack bar at the beach area as well as kayak rentals. At the parks entry area, there are gorgeous gardens - best time for viewing is in the summer of course, but plenty of greenery to make it a nice walk. Highly recommend this drive, especially if you have some time to enjoy all of the sights

This drive is one that anyone living in this area,as we do,should take at least once a year! Just a delightful drive in a natural area of trees, flowers, shrubs and greenery. Owens beach is so inviting and feels kinda private. Nice place for picnic and sight seeing.

A great drive I never get tired of. Make sure to stop at all the pull ins and check out the views. You might see eagle or other wildlife on the drive. Bring some binoculars to check out the waterfront and boats.

If you have the pleasure to come to Tacoma, please visit the Very Best Zoo of the Northwest!!
Everything is pristine, quiet, perfect guest-friendly! PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE CRITTERS!!!
Our zoo is perfect, and we EXPECT you will respect our AMAZING COLLECTIONS.!!!

Lately my visits to the Park on Tacoma's north end have been punctuated by encounters with fairly aggressive raccoons who seem to not believe me when I tell them I have not come bearing food for them. I love the drive, but stay in my car and rarely roll the windows down when I stop. But, raccoons aside, it is still the most beautiful drive in Tacoma.

If I were smart, I would say that this place is horrid and to stay away-in an effort to keep it to myself. I live in this neighborhood walk in the park year round. LOVE IT! Beautiful and just a great place to be.

This was a great stop. The whole 5mi drive had lookout points to see the Sound. We stopped at each spot and wanted to take pictures. Definitely a must see if you are in the area and have about an hour to spare.

Totally a place not many know about, but maybe that's good. Take a drive or stroll this unique road that travels under canopy's of old growth trees stretching from on side to the other, beautiful native plants such as huge Rhododendrons blooming and emitting their wonderful scents into the air, take the turn down the huge steep hill to Owens beach for a splash in the bay, during August of course ! Many turn-outs where you get awesome views of the surrounding areas, especially the our famous Narrows Bridges. Try this drive, just don't feed the critters.

Now is the time to see this. Great drive and plenty of places to stop and see the sights. Great viewpoints of the Narrows and bridges. There are rhododendrons to see and trails that can be hiked and explored. The Zoo is nearby and the Botanical Gardens are just starting to bloom that has a good selection of roses. Starts at the Pagoda - a restored tram terminal - that now serves as a venue for events. Great views all around. No Cost.

This is the crown jewel of the many great parks in Tacoma. This 600 acre wonderland has many miles of trails, great rose garden, loads of flowers, plenty of locations for picnics, you can either walk, run or drive the 5 miles drive. Also located here is the Japanese Garden and the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium well worth the visit. All in all 5 Mile Drive, its gardens, trails, Zoo and Aquarium make for an outstanding day for the family.

Point Defiance Park was beautiful, safe and easy to navigate. Highly recommend the hiking trails there. Also had a wonderful experience at the Silver Cloud Hotel - Tacoma Waterfront: gorgeous view of Pugett Sound, helpful, friendly desk staff and close to several eateries, bars, etc.

It is so lush and gorgeous. This park has always amazed me with it's beauty and the old growth trees. Always a joy to be able to see it again. Good place to hike, if you like to do that sort of thing.

We were passing through Tacoma on our was from Seattle to Olympia and decided to drive a few miles to see Point Defiance Park. It was a lovely park on a lovely day! We visited the well-maintained gardens, took the 5-mile drive, and stopped for a while at Owen's Beach. We didn't have time for the zoo or hiking on any trails but were impressed with everything else. What a nice area!

Summer, walk on the beach. Picnic in the park or by the waters edge. Dip your toes in the water. Take a tour of the Fort.
Spring, look for the miriade of wild Rhododedrums, Walk through the rose Garden
Autumn, view the autumn colors
Winter, drive slowly through the park watching for deer.
All year round, hike the trails. Go to the Zoo and Aquarium (entrance fee required). On the 6 mile drive, watch for raccoons, BUT DO NOT FEED. View the Puget Sound and Narrows bridge.

We drove the 5 mile drive while visiting Point Defiance Park. It’s a beautiful drive with overlooks viewing the Pungent Sound. Several stopes including Owen beach, fort Nasqually, the rose & flower gardens, & the zoo. Many trails you can hike or bike ride on. If you are looking for something to do with beautiful views of nature while in the Tacoma area visit the Point Defiance Park and drive or bike ride the 5 mile drive.

Beautiful piece of the Sound-to-Narrows 12K annual run/walk. Great place for casual and committed runners, joggers, bicyclists, picnikers. Great views of different parts of lower Salish Sea from high view points. Restored fort and museum. Great place for families with access to an amazing zoo.

I've spent many days driving, and walking through this park. It has everything...picnic areas, playground, chinese pagoda, rose garden, koi ponds, rhododendron garden, Owens beach, bbqing, walking/jogging trails, and amazing views of the puget sound and the narrows bridge.

I love showing people around from out of town and this is one of the places I bring them. My guests have never been disappointed in a trip to Point Defiance Park via 5 Mile Drive. There are sights for all abilities whether hiking, biking or just driving through. From the beautiful gardens to wonderful views of the Puget Sound and you may see animals such as raccoon, fox and deer to name a few. All of this as a service from Tacoma Parks and Rec at no charge.

Many levels of trails for all ages. Scenic low to high endurance. You can ride a bike on the 5 mile drive during specific times on weekends. Great views & trails

A wonderful place to go for any number of reasons. You can walk your dog or hike on the trails, or drive along the 5-mile loop that overlooks the Puget Sound. You may even see deer, skunks, raccoons, etc. PLEASE DON'T FEED THEM! There are signs regularly asking people NOT to feed the wildlife. There are also multiple spots where you can stop at a lookout and take pictures. From the lookout, we have been able to see seals, Sea Hawks (the animals, not the football team/fans), and Bald Eagles! If you are curious about hiking, there are tons of different trails, at levels for nearly everyone. I don't think that wheel chairs would be able to go on the trails though, but I can't think of anyone else that couldn't do it. Many of the trails are flat and level, making it easy for groups with young children. After you are done, it is only about 10 minute maximum drive back to downtown Tacoma and surrounding areas.

We were ending our Washington trip and had a few hours to waste, and the car museum was closed, so we saw that this was close by, and decided to give it a go! We had earlier in the week been to ButchartGardens, so weren’t expecting much, but after entering, for free, we were totally impressed with the views and the surroundings , and this place has some awesome picturesque locations to add to our trips photo album! So glad we went!!!

This is well worth visiting when you go to the Point Defiance district. There are nice places to stop off you are driving through the original forest areas.

On our last day in the Seattle area, it was raining. We decided to visit the 5 Mile Drive in the Tacoma area. It was a perfect activity for a rainy day. Beautiful, large trees with lots of fall colors. There are lots of opportunities to get out and explore- walking paths, picnic tables, to many a few.

This drive is great for everyone. You can walk, run, drive, walk your dog, and check out the sights. Peaceful and secluded.

Absolutely beautiful place. The gardens were amazing, the views of the water were breath taking and the had many very good walking trails.

Having lived in Tacoma, we have always found Point Defiance Park an enjoyable escape. The hiking in the park, the water activities, the aquarium, and the zoo, Point Defiance Park has all the family activities. First it takes a full, exhausting day to get in all the activities. The 5 mile hike winds through the forested areas of the park. Not a difficult hike and offered great views. The 5 mile drive through the park offered areas to pull out for scenic vistas and picnic areas. The Aquarium and Zoo are in the same area. But on warm summer days the park fills up quickly and parking becomes difficult, especially near the water and the zoo. Tacoma weather is typical of the northwest, summer weather usually begins around the 4th of July and remains warm through September.

It is a nice drive with very good views of the sound and the Narrows bridge. Did see one raccoon. Certainly worth the time.

Always a nice, relaxing ride that you can take anyday at anytime and enjoy. Fun for the whole family, or by yourself.

The Five Mile Drive is a beautiful and breathtaking place to drive withing Point Defiance Park in Tacoma, WA. The drive meanders along for 5 miles with lookouts that overlook the Puget Sound and the Tacoma Narrows Bridges. There are places to stop and picnic or for the kids to play. Don't forget your camera!

Throughout the five mile drive you will see a variety of trees, plants and even a few animals. There are several great stops you can make to take photos and there is a fabulous view of the Puget Sound and the Narrows Bridge.

I live near by so it is a nice way to get home. Slow speeds and plenty of amazing sights of creation.

To have a relaxing drive. The 5 mile drive is the most beautiful , calming ride you can go on. I love it when the tree's start to change the most.

Very few city parks feature stunning water - and island - and bridge - views.
And multi-century old trees. The perfect outing for kids of all ages in (almost) any weather.
The main road is closed to cars until 1pm each weekend; perfect for biking!

Great place to visit and have a full days adventure, must sees are Owens Beach, Point Defiance Zoo, also must do the 5 Mile drive and make it a day and have lunch at Anthony's on the waterfront with great food and spectacular views of Puget Sound and don't forget to go down the slides across from Anthony's its a great place for the kids to release some energy.

Beautiful place the rose gardens are really nice nice place to have a photoshoot and picnic u Dee the deer walking around

So many nice areas to explore. The only thing is some people drive too fast & need to slow down a little.

This is my happy place. I have lived in Tacoma for the last 35 years, and I still visit this location several times a month, if not weekly, even during the winter. If you are visiting, and you want to get away, and fuel your outdoor soul without leaving town, this is a must do. Take an hour or spend the day. Between the kid friendly picnic area, to the many picnic tables and turn outs, Owen's beach and miles of walking trails, there is something for everyone.

very cool. didn't expect the beautiful scenic views. Lots of places to get out and take photos. The gardens were beautiful as well

There are many places to stop for viewpoints, or to park the car and take a hike on one of the trails through the beautiful forest. The scenery is great. Wildlife viewing is possible - we spotted a few raccoons at the edge of the forest.

This section of Point Defiance Park offers much for walkers, joggers, sightseers, cyclists; and water enthusiasts. Trails wend their way through old growth forest; picnic areas beckon; viewpoints show off stunning vistas; kayaks await rental at Owen Beach; flower gardens delight; and wildlife occasionally appears. An added bonus: The outer loop is closed to motorized vehicles from opening to 10 a.m. on weekdays and from opening to 1 p.m. on weekends. This is a great place to escape nearby city life.
An information kiosk stands just inside the park entrance at Pearl Street. The kiosk holds information brochures with maps that outline the drive and mark interesting stops. We especially liked the Botanical Gardens, with myriad flourishing roses and dahlias; Owen Beach on Puget Sound, featuring a view of Vashon Island; the Narrows Viewpoint; and Fort Nisqually Living History Museum.
We thought we saw all the "wildlife" at the zoo, but two groups of raccoons at the side of the road proved us wrong. One group provided lots of laughs for the day as its members stood there, blocking a "Do Not Feed the Wildlife" sign. Those who ignore the warning, are subject to a $532 fine.
Plenty of parking exists throughout the drive.

My husband and I drove the scenic 5 mile drive and loved seeing the beautiful trees and look out points. Take your time to do the drive, let others pass you so you don't feel rushed, even though we didn't at all.

A beautiful old growth forest with amazing lookous and picnic spots. My only reason for not giving it a 5 and I know they are working on this issue, is the volume of traffic.

We went on the 5 mile drive during the perfect time...Fall! We saw such beautiful fall foliage. The views of the water & the Tacoma Narrows bridge was absolutely stunning! This area is very relaxing & a great idea for a coffee/hot chocolate date!

There are so many things one can do at Pt Defiance Park. 5 mile drive will take you to a bounty of trails, gardens, picnicing areas, evne the beach.

I grew up here and now live elsewhere. I visited after a 13 year absence and I was not disappointed.
Point Defiance Park, which has the 5 Mile Drive, was designed by the same person who designed MANY other parks, notably Central Park in New York City. Pt. Defiance and it's trail remain pure as wilderness within an urban setting. It has the beauty you seek in a National Park. The trails are great for comfortable hiking. Because of (likely rude) bicyclists, it is for hiking only. Formerly open to all, it had been open to bikes. On the weekend, there are more roads closed to cars and open to bikes.

Weather you want to get out of your car or not, the 5 mile rd is worth the drive. You drive along scenic out looks, or you can park and do walking trails. I don't if the raccoon are dangerous but there are a lot there. Also stop by Owens beach and have a lunch break, its very relaxing and plenty of logs to site on by the shoreline.

We visited at dusk and the dense moss covered trees were a gorgeous canopy. The beach is a peaceful area and it looks like the zoo is being expanded. Worth a stop.

So many trails to walk and so much nature to see. Deer, squirrels, chipmunks, Bigfoot. Well, you never know. Even with it being so near to Tacoma it's like you are no where near it. The perfect place to go if you just need some peace.

The drive is startling for people expecting a city park. It's anything but. If it's your first time taking the drive, plan to pull off at every opportunity given. The scenery is awesome.

But please don't come here very often! Lots of trails (miles and miles) through woods or along ear shot of road or w cliff side views of the water in this nearly 1000 acre natural park just minutes drive from downtown Tacoma. Biking on one way road which on weekends in the morning is closed to cars. Hilly!! Road meanders along the water and park edge with pull outs at various vista points and picnic shelters. Or take the little side road down to Owen's beach for some NW beach time at the picnic area. Can rent kayaks here on most days and/or take a nice beach walk---watch the high tide or you ll be very wet and scrabbling up the cliff for your life--seriously!

When you take the 5 Mile Drive, take it slow. That's the best way to truly enjoy all that Nature has on display. You will see really tall trees and some of the most beautiful flowers and shrubs anywhere. There are a good number of pull-offs to allow you to enjoy yourself while the fools speed through missing all of the good stuff. The numerous trails are nice for a nice stroll through the woods. Be sure to take your camera. There are some stunning views of the bay and a good shot of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

Whether you are a tourist or live here, the 5 Mile Drive is beautiful any time of the year. Drive it, run it, walk it, cycle it!!! Awesome views of our Sound and Narrows Bridge!

You will never find a more beautiful series of hiking/walking trails than here. In the midst of some of the last wilderness left in Pierce County outside of the mountains, you'll see wildlife, native fauna, and absolutely glorious views of Puget Sound and the Olympics.

Good to drive or walk, depending on the weather. Lots of amazing views - perfect for families, couples or solo. Several great places to eat nearby, too.

I feel so fortunate and lucky to have Point Defiance Park and the Five Miles Drive in my "backyard". Part of my lunch time 15 mile cycle loop 2-4 times a week, I never get tired of the old growth Doug Fir and cedar, the views of the Olympics, and the different flowers that bloom across the year.
The pot smoking kids add flavor too. I get lots of cheers from them when I wear my Pink Floyd bike jersey. And, no worries about them speeding either.

We took our East coast guests on the drive, they loved it! The park was quiet, peaceful and had an array of gardens including a rose garden, native garden and a dahlia garden.

We drove through with some friends and stopped off at some of the pictorial places. A huge tree near the rose garden, Japanese garden, dock, view of Gig harbor and more. Lots of raccoons around. Very fun.

Enjoy the drive to explore Tacoma, WA.
Beautiful scenery to take in and a way to get to see and experience
This part of the city.

The 5 Mile Drive is a treasure in the 2nd largest municipal park in the US. There are gorgeous viewpoints, great places to stop for lunch/snacks, and many miles of gentle walks and vigorous hikes. You can visit the Rhododendron Garden, Owen Beach, Fort Nisqually, an off-leash dog park, and a native plants garden. You can take 30 minutes to drive through and enjoy the scenery or spend all day exploring at various stops.

Tacoma is a beautiful area but this quick drive was stunning! The forest had beautiful scenery and the photograph opportunities were endless! It's definitely worth the drive!

This is a beautiful and relaxing drive on a Sunday afternoon (or any day). You move from the forrest to the bay and back. You may like to pull off the road for a picnic or a walk down the beach. You can stop at one of the scenic viewpoints or the old fort. There are many options based on your likes and the amount of time you have. Just the drive is incredible.

Five Mile Drive is an extension of sorts to Point Defiance Park. It meanders around the perimeter of the park with numerous places to park to enjoy varying views of Puget Sound. There are numerous picnic areas and a multitude of trails to hike in "old growth" surroundings.

I stopped by the 5 mile dam park for a visit and it was really nice. The water was up high going over the dam and there were quite a few fish visible in the calm deeper water upstream from the dam.
I want to get back when the weather is warmer for some kayak fishing!

It was fine, mostly people just want to quickly drive through it though so don't go if you're wanting to take a leisurely stroll through.

The drive is beautiful and could easily be done on foot or bikes. There are several trails to look hike, picnic areas and look out points with views of the water.

Relaxing drive. Too old to hike. Cute racoon family along side of road. Didn't see any other animals.

The trails here are good. The dogs love the trails. The markers can be somewhat confusing though. They have a dog park, but I've never taken the dogs. The drive it self it good. Great views. Good little weekend drive.

chose this trail as it's 2.6 miles roundtrip and takes you to a variety of views, including Gig Harbor. The weather became a bit overcast and chilly, but the walk was great; hope to explore some of the others next visit

Very pretty drive. Sane time for mommy while baby chills in car seat. HAHA it's rare I get time alone & this was very relaxing. So Relaxing I did it twice.

Love this drive and trails. Spent a lot of time here. Lots of things to see and experience. Ft Nisqually and Zoo are very interesting. Views are great. Fun trail to beach but a little strenuous.

The park has the 5-mile drive, which is an easy loop through the forest with break-out vistas of the Sound and Narrows Bridge. Running this route early in the morning will limit exposure to vehicle traffic. The speed limit through the park is 20 mph and has never been a problem while running. Also later afternoon runs, with golden light streaming through the evergreen forest is very very cool. The park also has dedicated flower beds of different varieties giving the visitor an opportunity to see beds of roses, Dalias and other flowers in colorful glory throughout the summer.

Tokin central for the tacomians, home to "the room", and "the penny tree"...roll it up, light it up, smoke it up.

We are fortunate we decided to stay in Tacoma to visit the sights rather than go back to Seattle. When we first got to the park when they opened up the 5 Mile Drive was closed. We decided to go back around one more time and it was open. Lucky us.This is really a lovely drive with numerous photo opportunities. Don't miss it or the rose garden near Pearl Street. Worth the effort to see.

Plan time to stop and smell the roses. Also time to go to the beach, the zoo, the fort, the japanese garden, the duck pond, etc.Great views of the bridge from the drive. Take the ferry for a short boat ride while in the park.

I rode the 5-Mile Drive with my wife on our bikes and had a great time. This drive is closed to cars, so it was a safe and stress free ride. There are a few hilly spots, but they were easily overcome by our e-Bikes! I'll definitely ride this trail again when in the area.

This is at Point Defiance Park I loved driving along the road sadly it was too late for any trails, but maybe next time!

This slow-paced drive gives you a glimpse of some old growth fir trees, racoons in the early evenings, deer, rhodies in bloom in spring, and great views of the Narrows Bridge and Puget Sound. I have taken friends from Omaha NE who had never been to the PNW on this drive. They raved about the height of the trees and the scenic views. Great place to take guests from out-of-town.

We were in Seattle for 3 days visiting a friend at the hospital. I asked at our hotel staff if there was a good place to get away for an hour or two and they suggested the 5 mile drive. You could spend from 30 minitues to all day there for free. I saw deer and beautiful views of the area. I highly recommend this little spot. It is next to the zoo and aquarium.

Hard to believe one can drive to the north end and find trees several hundred years old within the city nice trails and beautiful views.

Speed limit is 20 miles per hour in much of the lovely 5 Mile Drive so you can really appreciate the old growth woods on either side of the road. The views of the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges are dramatic. Puget Sound and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge are more highlights of the drive.
The drive winds through Pt. Defiance Park and past the gardens there. Really a lovely experience - don't miss it if you visit Tacoma.

We stopped by on our way back to Seattle based on the good reviews and were not disappointed. A scenic drive or hike through old forest forest and lookout points was great, but there were gardens in bloom too. (August 12) You see a lot out your car windows or hike around and spend several hours. definitely worth a visit

Touring Five Mile Drive has been compared to going around NY's Central Park, except less crowded. It can be a slow drive or pleasant walk or even casual bicycle. My only complaint as a cyclist is the occasional speed bump. They're curb to curb w/o a gap, which I find off putting.

Incredibly glorious sites as one drives through the winding trials of this wonder of Gods creation, with over looks, shafts of light piercing through the trees, and majestic trees they are. Well worth driving through at least once if not once a year or more. We went in early October but the flowers were still very pretty. Highly recommended!

Pity it was so wet ,this would have been an awesome place to explore.the gardens looked amazing and several different ones to visit Staff at center were very nice.

Point Defiance Park 5 mile drive is one of my favorites where I always take my friends who are visiting Tacoma. It's so quiet, has incredible views of Puget Sound and the two Narrows Bridges. On a clear day, the Olympics are in their glory, especially in the winter with their snow-capped peaks rising high! Point Defiance Zoo is also part of the drive as is Owen's Beach.

I used to live in Tacoma and when I wanted some quite time, I would always drive and stop in Point Defiance Park. There are many trails, beach access, gardens, zoo, views, and an old fort. Plenty of trees and undergrowth to make you feel like you are in the back woods. A must do while in the Tacoma area.

We are world travelers and often "escape" Tacoma. When guests visit, we go to Mount Rainier, the Olympics, Port Townsend, Victoria, Seattle. This summer we had guests visiting from Arizona and we were so proud to stay local and an important part of that visit was 5 Mile Drive and Trails.
One does not have to take a long hike to feel the natural beauty of the area. Sunsets can be spectacular and the overall drive is a 5 star journey. The stops along the way only increase the value. This will be the first place we take visitors from now on, not the last!

I was expecting more than what I experience. Wasn't much to see and the beach is covered in rocks so not a comfortable walk on the beach. Saw a family of raccoons which was cute. Something to do if you have ran out of things to do.

Enjoyed an afternoon drive through this lovely, forested, well planned out area park. The Rose Garden was the highlight for me with all the flowers in full bloom. Other stops throughout the park for a stroll along Owens beach and a look at Fort Defiance. Great views of the Sound. The zoo is also very nice. No fee to enter the park or gardens. Definitely recommend.

I am 52yrs, I have never charted the 5 miles of the Drive. What I have seen, has been epic, closely guarded or ever changing. Be prepared to walk, see, run, hike, see faraway land. Learn a world that my be ours again. give your dog a new park. On the way out gardeners may learn now ways to garden in our ever changing environment. Visit Point Def....make it a quarterly or more visit. Text me. I'd like to meet you if I can.

This is part of Point Defiance Park, so I don't know why it's listed as a separate attraction. Point Defiance is a Forest in the city and amazing to visit

Great views of Vashon, Colvos Passage, Gig Harbor and the twin Tacoma Narrows Bridges. Excellent way to get a flavor for the area and readily accessible by car. Good to do in any weather.

One of the most beautiful city parks I've ever seen! Encompasses the zoo, rose garden, beach and trails and fabulous forests. Outstanding!

This is such a lovely drive. You take a slow, winding road through beautiful towering old growth trees and Rhodies almost as large. Shady lane revisited! Park and walk down prepared trails to the beach or stop and sit at a table in the shade & picnic.

The 5 mile drive is my go to for exercise and catching up with friends on a long walk. The trails are well marked and you can spend hours walking among the trees. You can hear the zoo noise and catch several eagles flying over. Stop about mile 4 and look over the fence to catch some seals playing

If you are up for some adventure and soak up nature in the middle of a bustling metropolis? Hit up the trails at Point Defiance. Lots of slopes and hills, as well as flat spots -- but be sure to bring some hiking boots, or shoes you do not mind getting dirty, as many of the trails are a bit muddy -- the sun does not get through the trees well enough to dry it.

. My wife and I often decide to skip dinner at home and head out to Point Defiance Park for a picnic. We seldom preplan and grab fast food on Pearl on the way to the park. There are plenty of places where most tastes can be satisfied, sometimes we plan ahead and eat a little healthier. Although there is a nice sandwich shop just before the park entrance. Our favorite place to picnic is a small picnic area on the back side of the drive where you can park and look at the Narrows Bridges. There are picnic tables on the sound side of the road as long as they last. The cliff is sluffing off. If one is concerned there are table on the land side of the road. People are always friendly and peaceful. I like looking at the bout in the sound and the birds flying by just below the picnic area. The Magnolia trees to the left are a favorite viewing and eating area for Eagles. We have seen several over the years. Many people run 5 mile drive, me, I drive but a bike picnic outing would be nice. Eagles not your thing then try the picnic tables next to the Lobster Shop on Ruston Way. Great views of the sound from ground level, Mt. Rainier and generally sailboats.

We are so lucky to have this beautiful park and drive in our own Tacoma backyard. It’s close by and always beautiful no matter the season or weather. The best part is it’s free ! The water vistas are stunning and the scenery and gardens are spectacular. Just go!

Haven't walked the trails yet but the drive was pretty and relaxing.
So glad we took the time to take the short drive through the park.

Best place ever. it was really Smokey this trip but we still loved every minute of it. can not Waite to go back

Took a drive through on a Tuesday morning because I needed something to do. Great option because the drive is beautiful and a lot of places to stop off and look at the views

A quick drive, but with many turn outs and also a beach (Owen Beach) with great views of the surrounding bays.

The more I travel, the more I appreciate the natural beauty that is Washington state. The 5 Mile Drive and its surrounding area showcases Washington's natural beauty quite well. No matter what time of year, you'll see an array of trees, plants, and flowers. I recommend getting out of your car and walking or biking through the trails - it's so much better than just driving through - and the viewing lasts longer. If you haven't visited the rose garden on a clear summer day, put it on your calendar! The sights and smells are divine.

The 5-mile drive was very picturesque. The road winds through a park, hiking trails, outlooks and, in our case, families of raccoons.

My wife simply loved the various gardens: formal, Japanese, and native plants. She is an avid gardener and she got ideas by walking the gardens. The loop road takes you through a little bit of virgin forest (at least I believe it to be as the trees are quite big) so that you can imagine what the entire area must have been like at one time. I had the true enjoyment of a lifetime as I saw and heard a bald eagle in the wild for the 1st time while we were parked at the pull off where you can view the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. And being an engineer I enjoyed seeing the bridge that is quite famous because its predecessor collapsed (Galloping Gertie). They appear to have a good trail system for you to explore the woods but unfortunately we were in town for a wedding and just did not have the time to partake.

This is our go-to park for walks, hikes, biking and even has an off-leash dog park for the pups. Beautiful trees, rhododendron garden, historical village with historic re-enactors, biking, swimming, boating, stand-up paddle board & kayak rentals...

I often take my senior clients for a drive through 5 mile. They appreciate the stillness, beauty and peace they don't get in the city. There is a lot to do here, you can walk, drive, bicycle, skateboard (if you know how..lol) through the entire area. There is access and parking to play, fish or kayak off the beach and a snack shop that is open occasionally. We keep coming back here when friends and family come visit, everyone always enjoys their time here.
When coming into the drive, there are playgrounds you can stop and let your children play, you will also pass by Fort Nisqually. That's always a nice addition to your trip.
Sit back and enjoy the ride, the view and most of all the quietness.
Ps, you might even see a ild critter along the way.

As a Tacoma resident I visit Point Defiance Park at least a couple times a month and every time the Five Mile Drive is a high point. I especially like the hiking trails that roughly parallel the road. The well signed dark blue loop stays closer to the cliff, offering great views of the Puget sound below. The yellow loop is more forested, making one feel you're in a remote national park. Both are roughly 4 miles long, and we'll worth the time.

Around each curve was yet another splendid Vista! We were there on a Saturday and it was not congested. If you are visiting the area, as we were, do take time for this one.

Started out as an after thought but I intend on going back tomorrow and packing a picnic. Great scenery, great walking/hiking trails...a family could very easily spend the day here

This scenic drive through Point Defiance is absolutely wonderful. The many trails that are in the park make the hiker feel like they are in the middle of the forest with old growth trees and wildlife rather than in a park. Definately a must see and do in Tacoma.

Always has been my favorite park and place to run or walk, well except for the people that can't read the signs don't feed the rodents. Damn raccoons are everywhere. Great park and views, you definitely don't feel like you are in Tacoma. Love this place.

It's said Point Defiance is Tacoma's back yard. If that's so, then five
mile drive is a fine back alley. It's worth the detour and ow down just to see the vistas. Beautiful flora and fauna in a quiet setting. Give it a go!

A nice casual drive through the tree lined roads of the park. The only time you can't drive the five mile drive is early saturday mornings.

The five mile drive never really changes but the people who use it do and what used to be a nice scenic slow cruise through a beautiful park has turned into somewhat of a rushed get the heck out of my way racetrack.
I visit the five mile drive on occasion to cruise slowly down the one lane road and take in the ambiance of the surroundings. The forest, the wildlife, the sounds of nature oh, and the front bumper of the jerk behind me riding my butt.
My advice is that if you don't want to go slow and take in the scenery, then stay out of the five mile drive but it seems that a lot of people now days think that it's a racetrack meant for getting around as fast as possible while not paying any attention to the surreal surroundings.
I'd still encourage you to go if you've never been. Especially if you're from out of town. It could be a once in a lifetime experience. There is a lot to see and do.
First, you will enter the Pt. Defiance park area where there are beautiful gardens, a Japanese pagoda and a nice size pond usually full of ducks. Then if you choose, you can visit the Pt. Defiance Zoo & Aquarium located just before the five mile drive.
Along the drive, there are multiple areas to pull over and take in the scenic views of the Puget Sound and the Tacoma Narrows bridges. There are multiple picnic areas and a couple of playgrounds so the kids can burn off some energy.
Along the way, take a turn and wind your way down the hill to Owen Beach. Depending on the time of year, you can enjoy some snacks from the refreshment stand or rent a kayak and go explore the cliffs from the water side. There are BBQ pits available and a large covered picnic area but that is usually reserved for parties. Take a nice stroll down the beach and end up at the boat house and ferry dock where you can enjoy a nice meal at Anthony's Seafood restaurant or take the ferry over to Vashon Island and explore over there.
Further on down the drive, you'll get to see a humongous tree that is about 450 thousand years old and towards the end of the five miles are the remnants of the old Never, Never Land and Fort Nisqually museum.
I am really disappointed in the state of things currently versus how they used to be when I was younger and I know that it's because of a lack of funding and a lack of general care from people now days however there used to be so much more to see and do. Never, Never Land was an attraction where for a small entrance fee, you could walk through trails and discover storybook and nursery rhyme characters and decorations. There was a large shoe where the Little old woman who lived in a shoe lived. There was a grandfather clock where the mouse ran up the clock. We saw the gingerbread house of the wicked witch from Hansel and Gretel and a lot more. These days, all of that is gone because of a lack of money to maintain it and disrespectful people who broke in and vandalised it.
Fort Nisqually is nicer now as a museum but now you have to pay whereas when I was a kid, it was free and we were allowed to enter the buildings and climb up the towers. Those days are gone now.
A place called camp 6 used to actually be a day camp for kids before becoming a logging museum and then ceasing to exist altogether over the last few years. They had a cool train ride that would take you through the woods and show you how logging was done at the turn of the century. They had some really cool equipment to see and the train conductor would give you a history lesson along the way. Sadly, that is gone now too.
As for the trails, there are tons of them and if you like to hike, this is the place to do it but beware, if you use the trails during the winter, they can get quite muddy and even have many puddles to avoid. It's also a good idea not to be in the trails on really windy days. Large branches as well as entire trees are known to fall quite often during our wind storms so be very mindful of that should you decide to go hiking.
For all of the things that this area used to be, it still is a lot of things today. Maybe someday, it will build more attractions and gain the popularity of yesteryear. Maybe not but all the same, it is a nice place to visit.
Thank you for reading.

I was born and raised here and will never grow tired of coming to this Park! From the Botanical Garden to the Five plus Miles of Scenic Views, Trails, Beaches, Breath-taking Sun Sets, the Zoo & Aquarium. For the History Lovers, there's something for you too (smile). I love it and highly recommend the experience.

This is a great trip for all ages.. lots to see ..flower garden den is a must see❤️ Zoo/acquarium great for all ages.. we drove from Portland with our grandkids and everyone had a great time!

a must when passing through. the ferns are incredible! quiet and very pretty. annoying this has to be 100 characters to be accepted!

a city park larger than Central Park - with old growth Northwest forest, great views of the Puget Sound, Olympic and Cascade Mountains - and minutes from downtown Tacoma

What a beautiful drive, wonderful scenic views, a great get away right in town... fabulous place to picnic or for a bicycle ride.

Five mile drive is a beautiful forest. There are hundreds of rhododendrons alongside the road. It's just like you're in a forest many miles away

Me and my boyfriend went through the five mile drive just for the scenery.
We love the cool breeze through the trees and little racoon's just sitting on the edge of the road.
There are turnouts that overlook the bay and Narrows Bridge. There are picnic tables and places to grill food.

We went there to check the dog park out. You have to park on the side of the road & walk a little ways. Spike enjoyed his time there checking it out. There are some benches & a covered area.

I was amazed how extensive this area was & how it went from beautiful forests to amazing views of the Narrows waterway

The 5 mile drive is an excellent little drive through point defiance. See gorgeous nature and the stunning Narrows bridge. Highly recommend.

An icon in itself, 5 mile drive is one of best places in Pierce County. Love to walk or ride bikes in the shade of the old-growth fir trees while taking in the gorgeous views of the Sound.

A beautiful park - lots of trees, ferns, flowers. Includes zoo and Ft. Nisqually. My favorite part is Owens Beach. Lots of places to picnic. The walking trails are marked and a map is available. Beautiful views! Well worth your time.

We were here in December so we missed the blooming flowers but the scenery was still lovely. The scenic views offered a view of Seattle.

This is a nice relaxing drive, they have tons of alcoves to pull off and see the view or places to pull off and have a bbq.

I love how you can be at the Tacoma Mall shopping at over 110 stores and in 15 minutes be in the middle of an old growth forest driving along a peaceful road or walking in the woods. 5 Mile Drive at Point Defiance Park makes it possible. Don't miss it.

Always better to walk than drive, but for those who cannot then here’s a lovely drive through the forest set in Point Defiance Park. Unfortunately the presence of so many vehicles has encouraged the raccoon population to see every car etc as a food truck! RESIST! The temptation to stop and feed it doesn’t help them. Just take in the backyard and leave ‘em be. Enjoy!

Definitely worthwhile. We drove through two days ago and last month also. Very scenic. Well maintained as well. There are turn outs to get out and take photos. Nice multiple trails. Look out for the hordes of raccoons at dusk.

We drove from Covington and entry into the trail is flanked by the sea on your left. It's an oasis within a major suburb. There is a beach front and a fantastic moderate effort trail that meanders through the 5 miles. The sun was playing hide and seek which made the wind seem colder, consider that when planning. There weren't any shops around the trail so get your water, etc. before you come in.

Located at Point Defiance, this drive shows you all the large park has to offer such as a fort, a zoo, a beach, go karts, great picnic areas and beautiful views over looking Puget Sound.

Part of a wonderful park with a lot of different things to see. We were surprised to see several raccoons walking up to the car as we were slowly cruising the route.

Five mile drive is a wonderful get-a-way place to grab a latte or cocoa and take a relaxing drive through. You are instantly in the forest. Take the time to stop and look at the scenic viewing areas which look out over the magnificent Tacoma Narrows. The world just looks different when viewing it from a forest. If you watch along the way you can see raccoon families, birds and other wildlife, but please obey the rules and resist feeding them. The raccoons have become friendly with cars that slow down expecting food and it draws them away from the safety of their habitat. If you live near or far you will not regret enjoying this scenic trail.

Absolutely loved this drive! Very scenic even in the wintertime. Many points of interest. Will come back in warmer weather as well and picnic!

Wonderful park for hiking and biking. You have great views of the Puget Sound, animals, and get close to nature. A must visit if you come to Tacoma.

Great way to spend a day with family or solo. Enjoy the beautiful gardens, choose one of many easy hiking trails in old forests, drive to gorgeous lookouts of Puget Sound on 5 mile drive, and of course, the wonderful zoo with brand new Aquarium

I live about 1.5 miles from Pt. Defiance park and regularly go to the rose garden and ride my bike around the park, better known as 5 mile drive. the park is closed to motorized vehicles every morning so it is totally safe for bikes, joggers and walkers. You have easy access to the beach, killer views of the puget sound on 3 sides and the Japanese garden and reservable pagoda. When you use it every day it is very easy to take for granted.
Plus it's all free except for the Zoo.

It is very unusual to find such beauty in the city. Please take time to at least drive through this serene forest. There are plenty of places to stop and take beautiful pictures and if you are adventuresome, there are trails to walk. We noticed a lot of bikers but they posed no problems as the speed limit is only 20 mph. The smell of the pines is incredible and some of the views are breathtaking. You end up at Fort Nisqually which has a picnic area and some of the old buildings still are standing. Time well spent!

Dense Forrest right in the middle of the city! Fun to take a drive and check out the sights! Lots of Racoon's (DO NOT FEED THEM! even though they are cute as a button)

We drove through on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Wish we had taken more time to appreciate what there was there. But we just happened upon the area on our way back from brunch along Ruston Way. The trails and pull out areas open up to some pretty scenic views of the water and surrounding areas. We would come back for sure and spend more time to more fully appreciate the area, maybe exploring some of the trails.

in the park. 5 miles of beautiful rain forest like views. a nice slow drive or a great way to exercise on trails that take deep into the forests with great views of the narrows

If you have the opportunity, you really need to drive the 5 mile drive. So many beautiful sights and lots of places to stop for photos. Since it was spring, not a lot of traffic so we could take out time and not feel rushed.

A sweet breath of good quality air - take some time to do the 5-mile trail at Point Defiance - and bring your camera. You'll feel inspired by many opportunities to photograph the sites.

everytime I go, there are racoons sitting along the road. It's as if they are greeting the passersby. This is a beautiful drive and trail with many lookout points over the sound. I go frequently and never tire of it.

i have used this loop (which is slightly less than 5 miles), as a place for fairly low-stress bike training in prep for longer road bike rides. There are some moderate hills, the number of cars is low (if you go at the right time - I do not recommend it on busy weekends), there are few cross streets, and the scenery is fantastic.

Nice on a rainy day or sunny day. Lots to look at and stop by. Areas to picnic and explore. Very fun for the whole family or a date day.

I don't live too far from point defiance and we love taking the kids and dogs here to play. My sister and I will walk the five mile with the dogs on weekend mornings they close off the main loop to cars till i think 10 or 11. It has amzing veiws of the sound and narrows bridges.

What a beautiful drive, even in the middle of winter. Water, woods and views. Places to pull over to observe.

Wonderful park with old-growth forest, with lots of picnic areas, hiking trails, gardens, pagoda, Owen Beach, a world-class zoo, and fabulous viewpoints along the drive. Really, one of the gems of Tacoma. Don't miss it. We used to live in Tacoma and visit often, and now, on trips back, we usually spend some time there.

The flower gardens were full of blooms and made for an enjoyable walk. We also went down to the beach for a few minutes to dip our toes into the water. Overall, this was a great place for a quick visit.

Easily accessible by car and to hike. Places to park for view points and photos. Deer and raccoon wander through.

Really nice drive with great trees. Areas to stop and see views. It’s one way so you don’t have to deal with a lot of traffic hassles. Will take you to different areas in the park such as the fort, beach, dog park, etc.

Scenic drive including gardens, zoo, beaches and an old fort. We went in July on a sunny day and the views were gorgeous!

well, my best friend was visiting me.. she wanted to go hiking. My boss told me about this awesome place!!! you can hike, bicycling, and also go to owens beach!!

This is such a great place to explore on foot. There are many interconnected trails so it's easy to get lost, but that's half of the fun. Because the park is on a penninsula with a road along the perimeter, you can always find your way back to your starting point by getting to the road if need be. Lots of views and big trees. Beautiful!

I wrote a detailed review on Point Defiance which includes a lot about this driving trail. It is one of the most beautiful around and it's FREE. In this day and time when attractions, even those which are state/federal owned are going up in price, there's plenty to do around here that doesn't cost a dime other than what it cost you to drive there.
We spent an entire day here and we could have stayed longer if we had the time. There's so many varied things to see. What we did would probably not be of great interest to children except for the time we spent at the beach area but there's plenty for children to see, such as the zoo, the aquarium, the fort, and all types of hiking trails - some very easy and welcoming to those of us who aren't so young any more - but there's some that are challenging that the younger folk would love too. And ALL gardens, hiking trails, driving paths, beaches, etc. are free and in this day and time how welcome is this?!!
Go - enjoy what Mother Nature provides and feel the sun beating on your face - if you are lucky enough to go when it's not raining - but ... the trees are so thick that you can walk forever in the 'rain' and not get wet too.
I hope you give this place a chance. I hate to give it such a glowing recommendation because I don't want our little secret to become so popular that it's not fun because of the crowds - but I can't be selfish either can I.
Come and see it - you'll be glad you did!!

I love this drive and walking through the trails. A little piece of nature right in town. It is most beautiful in fall with the leaves turning color and the fog on the water.

It was dreary out and we were not expecting much but it was a pleasant drive! I can see the potential during the warmer months. We spotted a friendly raccoon on the side of the road, a seal in the water near the beach and a dear grazing. I highly recommend even if you cannot get out of your car or choose not too, plenty of spots offer scenic viewpoints along the drive.

Great rainy day activity! Many options of places to stop along the way. Lots of local wildlife to see in the park.

This is a very nice place to take a date for a picnic on a nice afternoon. The scenery is beautiful and it is not too crowded. Plenty of places with picnic tables near the view.

There are quite a few pull out / parking view points of Puget Sound. There is bathroom & picnic area. You can view wildlife: deer, raccoons & many bird species. There are also walking trails within the 5-mile drive.
The trees are beautiful & it’s a restful place. My son & I like to drive here just for a fun afternoon drive.

Point Defiance is really accessible to all. There are long term residents that don't miss a day at the park. There are annual family and cultural celebrations that spend a warm day barbequeing, weddings, receptions, reunions, and my favorite Sunday trail runs. It is an amazing gem on the water.

The drive and view stops along the way are awesome! I enjoy parking and just relaxing, away from the sounds of the city. I feel safe in the Park, even though surroundings are quite wooded. Will be enjoying the Drive again this spring and summer.

We drove the 5 mile drive.
Our funniest moment is that they have a big sign that says do not feed the animals. Of course, this is where a huge raccoon family was and trying to look so cute.
There are numerous trails. We liked the trees and plants and views of the water.
Its a very scenic drive. When one gets done, one is close to the zoo area to go to in Point Defiance Park.

A return to this gorgeous part of Tacoma for a hike and to spend time on Owen Beach. Considering the proximity to large residential parts of Tacoma, it is remarkable how peaceful the Port Defiance trails remain. 3 different trails undulate around the park with marked posts giving clearly directions. The blue square trail taking you to each viewpoint across the Sound along gorgeous wooded trails at a distance of just under 4 miles. Port Defiance is reachable by city transit. Pierce bus 11 from Tacoma and bus 10 from Tacoma Community College both bring you next to Anthonys restaurant, and the Vashon Island ferry. The walk along by the water to Owens beach gives wonderful views of Mount Rainier in one direction on a clear day, and the Olympics in the other. I saw seals when walking along this stretch and then a small family of deer when hiking the trail itself.

Had a nice day, flowers and gardens were beautiful even this late in the season. I would definitely recommend and will visit again.

Had it not been so hot, we would have put on our running shoes and gone for a run. This is a nice wooded, paved road. It has subtle inclines and declines but mostly flat.

amazing peaceful park... i grew up in Tacoma, and spent many days hiking, jogging and having family picnics in Point Defiance Park.

My brother took my mother and I with his wife for a drive...and we loved it. Was winter but still lovely as always. Having grownup in Tacoma area on and off and revisited many times over 65 years of traveling...I have seen the changes but also the beauty that has grown into a very pleasurable drive through.

Point Defiance Park has been Tacoma's recreational gem for over a century. At local restaurants you see vintage pictures of people traversing the five-mile drive in horse-drawn carriages.
The 5-Mile Drive is a semi-circle that traces the edge of the peninsula across from Vashon Island and Gig Harbor. Saturday mornings it it closed to motorized traffic, which means that hikers, runners, and bikers share this wonderful space, with awesome views of Vashon and the Narrows, moss-covered trails through groves of patriarchs, and terminally cute raccoons who waylay traffic and demand oreos or else.
Wonderful for walking, whether on pavement or on trails. Please don't feed the raccoons. They are already unionized, and it's just a matter of time before one of them runs for mayor.

I've been visiting Point Defiance since before I can remember, which takes us back to the late 40's! Five Mile Drive was always a relaxing experience, a wonderful chance to get off the busy road and drive through the forest. It still is! There is a surprise around every corner, even for those of us who have been coming here forever. Today the entry to the park was busy with new construction, especially around the zoo, but the rest of the drive was dependably wonderful, with many scenic viewpoints, picnic areas, and such stopping points as Owens Beach, The Fort, and the beautiful gardens. The wife and I had not cruised through here in a while, and I was happy to see much improvement in the markers that direct you to each attraction and turn in the road along the way, although some of the early ones seem to positioned a little late to make a sound decision. Still, this is a wonderful refuge and I can't imagine too city parks that offer so much beauty, peace, and opportunity to enjoy nature.

I am lucky and live near this wonderful oasis. Plenty of fresh air quiet hiking trails, weekends of course are busier weekdays pretty secluded. good place to take my dog.

Living in Tacoma, the 5 mile drive is a welcome getaway. We like to go there as a family, sometimes just because it other times after going to the zoo. Just driving the loop, we have seen deer, raccoons, and eagles. The off-leash dog area is nice and the multitudes of walking trails are excellent.

Pt Defiance Five Mile Drive is a favorite get-away, whether it's spur of the moment or an opportunity to introduce a visitor to the beauty found in Tacoma. No matter what time of the year, we like to crank the windows down to enjoy the fresh air and smell of the woods, and a different and wonderful view awaits us at every turn. The chance to spot some of the wildlife at home in the park is always exciting, although the raccoons make it very easy by lining up along the side of the road as if we're part of a parade. We never pass up the viewing point overlooking the Narrows Bridge, and love to stop at Fort Nisqually as well. We've been here long enough to remember when Neverland was located next to the Fort, and my grown children still miss wandering through the different fairy tale vignettes. Although we generally drive this route, a few years ago we participated in a cancer walk, and did the entire five miles on foot. Whether you drive, walk, or ride, this is a wonderful way to escape the rat race, even for only a few moments!

Two friends were visiting from Portland and while we were driving around we saw about 20 raccoons that kept coming out of the bushes. We loved the 5 Mile Drive so much we went around again!

This is a partial review since I already included the five mile drive in my original Pt. Defiance Park review. This place is not only amazing but a great place to spend the day. You can picnic here, spend time on the beach, see the different attractions (zoo etc) or just cruise the five mile drive looking for your perfect spot in the park. If you are in the area this is a must stop destination, you won’t be sorry.

I live in Gig Harbor, but my favorite running route is the 5 miler near Point Defiance. I like to run/jog, but the paved trail is wide enough for runners and walkers( with pets on a leash please-) both ways.
My family has grown up looking forward to early Saturday morning runs and then breakfast at Antique. this place looks beautiful. If you decide to go, please enjoy it, but pick up after yourself and respect the special place.

If you are visiting owen beach or the rose gardens, you should do the five mile drive loop. Owen beach, the gardens and the scenic drive are all free. The drive offers amazing water views at various parts of the drive. Many areas to stop, picnic, hike or take selfies along the drive.

Year round the 5 miles Drive and trails are a great idea for visitors or resident in Tacoma. Take a slow drive and stop among the many scenic view-points. Stop and lock your vehicle and walk the many easy trails. Never too cold to stop at the beach and graze at the beautiful sound. Sit in your car turn on your favorite tunes and lose your self in one of Tacoma's beautiful Parks.

Worth the time, great for all kinds of family's. Be careful the racoon's are too friendly, and it's a $300+ fine if you feed them. The self tour includes a zoo, living fort, and dog areas. Good for picnicking.
Shaded Drive
Wonderful drive around a nice park. Get out at Defiance Point Park & walk around looking at some of the most amazing flowers you will even see. If you just do the drive it is beautiful enough, but get out at some of the pull offs & look around. Mostly shaded the whole way. Some very large ferns that are worth stopping to look at.
Our 1st trip to Tacoma to visit our daughter & she made this our first stop.
