Unique tourist attraction

By gallagrrrr |

This is a fun and worthwhile stop. I thought my son was joking when he said he was taking us to Prairie Dog Town. But that is what it is, a small dirt area occupied by Prairie Dogs. If you haven't seen them before, this is worth going to. The little kids that were there watching the prairie dogs were really entertained. I think the prairie dogs were probably just as entertained watching the humans!

Price is right.

By Barbara A |

After t dying to follow GPS on our way through Lubbock, it was there all along where GPS said it was- not a good follower.
Very pleasant stop for something totally different. We love animals.

Bring baby carrots and they will eat them in front of you

By jaxson1 |

This is a place to bring young kids or your sweetheart for about 20 minutes of entertainment. The prairie dogs are more active in the cooler parts of the day, I've noticed and they enjoy eating the baby carrots we bring to throw their way. The carrots are great because they're cheap and you can chunk them about 30 yards - far enough to where the prairie dogs congregate. I've noticed that they don't have very good eyesight, so you need to get the bright carrots pretty close to them in their line of sight for them to register what it is.

Too cute to miss--and FREE!

By Suzanne G |

Only takes a few minutes to come see these adorable critters. And they even have a SnapChat filter! Watch out in parking lot--they have dug under walls and have holes everywhere. So cute!!!

Loved it!

By Maria B |

I was originally not going to drive here. Last minute decision and so glad I did! Not much at the location. BUT if you like animals this is a stop you should take. These prairie dogs are so cute.

More free range by the dmv

By Matthew P |

This is definitely a hallmark of Lubbock, though if you want a more in your face experience head out to the DMV or airport where the prairie dogs have taken over and aren't walled in. Adorable little heathens.

It's a Field of Prarie Dogs

By Caleb |

Nothing more. Don't get me wrong, it was fun to see to prarie dogs, my little boys loved them. Would like to see a little more community pride in the park. Looks run down. No facilities of any sort. Very little shade from the hot sun. A little more educational material on the critters would be nice. Found the closest restroom to use... worse public restroom I've seen in my life.

Depends on your perspective

By Patty |

For children under 4 that really really want to see a praire dog it's ok. Otherwise don't waste your time!

To see prairie dogs!

By Chris C. |

1. Good to know about the prairie dog town’s history which was a good story.
2. Good for people never see prairie dogs, but you can’t really see the prairie dogs that close.
3. Seems like the area outside the official “town” has more prairie dogs now!
Recommend people who haven’t seen prairie dogs to go taking a look.

Not as cool as it sounds

By Designtravels23 |

This is basically a field with a bunch of prairie dogs living in it. People bring bread (which is bad for prairie dogs, bring veggies or fruit instead) and feed the animals so they get quite close. It is mildly amusing, but hardly worth more than 10 minutes of your time.

Free fun activity for the family

By Teresa F |

We just kept saying over and over how cute the little guys were. If you are looking for a free activity to entertain the family this is it. Bring a bag of carrots because they love them.

Wide Open Spaces

By angelicarenee13 |

This is just a fun little detour on the way to Joyland or Mackenzie Park for the little ones. The open space allows for the prairie dogs to run around and they come up so close to you. Our kids loved watching the prairie dogs and seeing them run back and forth and make the little noises and jump in the air. It made my partner want to learn more about the prairie dogs so he could explain to our children why the animals were doing certain actions.

Free and Cute!

By Jacquelyn L |

I LOVE Prairie Dog Town. I cannot believe there are 1 star reviews on this page. Yes, it's a just a giant field with Prairie Dogs in it, what did you expect? Yes, there are prairie dogs all over Lubbock, but I imagine a park with seating and a pavilion is better then parking on the side of the road with children.

If you have animal lovers in your family they will love this! In late May/ early June the babies are just big enough to run around and play, and they aren't too skiddish. I would recommend against bringing house dogs as they stress out the Prairie Dogs, and dusk or dawn would be best as they are most active. Bread is hard for them to digest, if you feed them bring ray baby carrots or sweet potatoes. Also drive carefully in Spring, they spill out towards the baseball fields and dart in front of cars.

By RedRaiderFan416 |

We live in Wolfforth (about 20 miles away), and we come to Prairie Dog Town occasionally on Saturday/Sunday afternoons. My boys (10 and 5) LOVE to feed the prairie dogs french fries! It's funny to watch the prairie dogs as they "bark" at each other and fight over the fries. It's worth a quick stop, especially if you have kids.

Adorably Fun Family Activity

By roseberry3 |

Those prairie dogs are the cutest things in Lubbock! They enjoy carrots and pumpkin seeds seem to be a favorite snack! They are adorable and a must see when visiting Lubbock!

Interesting little area

By cowboyred |

While I lived in Lubbock for a number of years, I never went to Prairie Dog Town until recently. It is a neat little area that is free to visit and is protected. You can also see similar "wild" variations in various parts of town as the prairie dogs migrate to different areas.

Kinda cool

By Outtatownr1 |

You get to see prairie dogs in their natural habitat-flat dry land with lots of holes but when they get fed they're out in drones. Kinda cool

Excitement Overload!!!

By Sfp S |

This is a must see for anyone visiting Lubbock who has never seen prairie dogs or who knows nothing about how prairie dogs live. Just joking about my title "Excitement Overload", but it is fun to go and watch those little critters running and jumping around. These rodents are a nuisance to many, especially farmers; but, they'll provide some fun site-seeing for 15 minutes or so! If you can't make it to Prairie Town, keep your eye out on most empty lots or fields (aka prairies) in and around the Lubbock area and you are sure to see them there as well.

a field of prairie dogs

By Jazibe |

its nothing special. a field with prairie dogs. very little shade, some people bring carrots to throw at them to feed them. not worth the trip, maybe stop by if you're already at the park

Something Fun for the Kids

By hddaugherty |

I wouldn't go out of my way to visit the prairie dog town in Lubbock, but if you happen to be in the area, especially with kids, it's worth a stop.

Fun Experience

By Noreen K |

So fun to visit this fenced in place at McKenzie Park to see these amazing little Prairie Dogs. There were big ones and little ones, eating, playing, running around and just entertaining to watch! Kids will love it and I enjoyed getting cute photos of them. Fun to listen to them talk to each other too. Some informative signage there to explain their living arrangements. Worth a stop!

Unique

By kjk |

You may have travelled all over the world, but you have never been to a prairie dog town! It is like swimming with dolphins , like the monkeys of Gibraltar, okay not quite, but it is little varmints in captivity, little kids love it.

A unique area designed for prairie dogs

By GARY G |

Read about this from a brochure from the hotel. Stopped by with a bag of celery and enjoyed an hour of feeding and watched these little guys. A unique area that was fun stop. Kids would really like it.

Very nice side trip while in Lubbock

By ET385 |

We did not know what to expect when we saw the sign. But this was definitely worth the side trip. If you are in town, it's worth the minimal time required. There are a number of other activities near by including a amusement part, agriculture museum, WWII glider museum and the wind museum.

Worth a stop

By Chip P |

Fun & quick stop. We stopped by in the afternoon. The prairie dogs were out in force and quite entertaining.

Good rest stop

By BCSchoolgroup |

Enjoyed sitting here for 30 mins. watching their activities. They are social with each other but territorial. If you insist on feeding them, know what they eat. Small pieces of apple were good but you must be able to throw. They won't come close to you.

Easy, fun outing

By BWinHouston |

Bring baby carrots or other healthy treats. Easy parking and close proximity to the prairie dogs. Fun!

Prairie Dogs

By Jimmy D |

Fantastic dogs! You will never see as much "fun" in such a small package as you will here. They are too cute, and like grandchildren, you can enjoy them, and leave them!!

Close up look at Prairie Dogs!

By AonMileFailte |

I first saw prairie dogs outside of town when driving around and they were hilarious to watch running and standing up to get a view. I found there was a park for them and so glad I stopped by. While there are many out "in the wild" around town, going to the park allows you to observe them within 2-3 foot distance. The prairie dogs here are used to people and this park makes it easy for children to see them up close. A must visit if you have children that love animals!

THRILLING EXPERIENCE

By 189wendie |

This is a MUST DO if you visit Lubbock! And take snacks for them, like carrots or celery. Oh, and a current favorite ... Nutter Butter bites!! Such fun to watch them interact with each other, and sometimes, you will see babies!! They've even tunnelled under and away from the marked enclosure, so be aware of them on the outskirts of the road, and parking area. You can actually get close to some, who may be more familiar with people, while others will be the alarm system to tell everyone that danger is around. Keep in mind that they are wild animals, and not to be held, or captured for any reason, but if you are patient, and let them come to you, they will take the carrot piece right out of your hand. They are just adorable!!!!!!!

Always worth a stop, even if only for a few minutes

By Five15 |

The people who moan about this being small and just a field with a bunch of prairie dogs are in some ways right, but that is nothing to moan about - its never been more than that. It costs nothing and you stay as long or short as you like. They are small and cute and hold your attention, there is nothing else there but some cover and some trash cans and if after 5 minutes youve had enough, then its all good I reckon.

Go and Enjoy!

Free active for the family

By Samantha P |

My boys love love love this and I love it too because it's FREE :) They are so cute and my boys love watching them. The evening time or fall/winter time is the best time to visit because it's not so hot.

Unique, Take your Kids!

By NightSky7 |

A little out of the way, but worth it. Quiet park (could use some upkeep /TLC) where you can get up close to Prairie Dogs! Google types of foods they like & then Buy/Bring some. Your kids will love it AND it's FREE! Make sure to read the Plaque on its history. Enjoy!

Great Natural Fun

By Fayechiru |

A lot of cute babies right now. Bring chopped carrots for them and water for yourself. A great place to bring the kids, or go on a nature date.

So fun to watch the little fellas!

By Kristi L |

This was such a joy to watch. They were so cute. The "dogs" would stand on their hind legs and fuss at the birds.

Perfect road trip stop. The kids loved it.

By otmgoodale |

This place was fantastic. It's free to visit, and there is a huge area where the prairie dogs roam freely. They are very fun to watch, especially after throwing them carrots or something similar to eat. The kids loved it, they would have spent all day there if we let them. I wasn't expecting this to be a 5-star attraction ahead of time, but I'm very glad we decided to stop here.

Watch out for flying golf balls.

By sun34shine |

Not very scenic and got hit by a golf ball off the nearby golf course...I would not recommend. Was walking the trail and got hit by a golf ball a ways off. The prairie dogs are fun to watch. The area is very brown and trashy.

Cute little critters!

By WeL0veTravel |

When we stopped by the park on a roadtrip, there happened to be a black cat patiently staring down one of the praire dog holes...meanwhile a couple of the praire dogs were some distance away chirping at the intruder! Happy we were able to see the praire dogs.

Remove this place or rename it !

By engr1981 |

This was my biggest disappointment when I arrived in Lubbock. Can not describe it, you have to see it to beleive that the name is much bigger than what it really is. A few holes in ground ... that is it !!

Good place for kids

By buddy t |

It has some native animals to see how they live in this area. Great place to take kids by, they will enjoy the little animals.

Free Entertainment

By JNYCwriter |

I thought that Prairie Dog Town was a much more formal place where you buy tickets and there is a lot of formal information on these creatures. Nope, it’s basically an open area next to a parking lot within a Lubbock park. There are few signs nor educational material. But you can be up close and personal with these inquisitive creatures - and I was able to see a lot of them. There was something about the informal nature of this place without cages, walls or people that makes this appealing.

Prairie Dog county!

By TXWriter |

We have prairie dogs all over Lubbock County. Why do we need a specific prairie dog town? Ridiculous.

Go with a group and plan ahead with food to the prairie dogs

By Ricardo V |

I would recommend to go with a group so that it can be much funner. Do some research and take some food to feed them. They are super cute and they're are numerous amounts of them. Be careful driving around sometimes they cross the streets.

So relaxing.

By Scott T |

On each trip that we make to Lubbock, we set aside some time to visit the P-dogs.
Watching their interactions is relaxing and adorable.
It can be difficult to find for a first time visitor.

Omg they are so cute!!!

By Greg S |

We had so much fun looking at the prairie dogs. Do bring something to feed them because they will come right up to you and eat right from your hand. We were lucky we had some nuts to feed them. Something fun and free to do.

Great place to just sit and watch

By MooreWater |

We have brought a picnic on several occasions. Quiet there has been very few people each time we have been here to watch the Prairie Dogs. Our toddler loves to share his fruit & veggies.

A dose of cuteness

By Stacy S |

Better than a trip to the zoo! These little guys were quite entertaining just being themselves. It's fun to be able to be so close. Most fun you can have for free on a Wednesday evening in Lubbock.

Free Cuteness

By Rebekah T |

Bring some carrots and watch cute prairie dogs for free. There's also a playground near by. It's a nice stop

Fun for all ages

By DLemon |

The Prairie Dog Town is fun for all ages. The little animals bark, squeak and jump. They are protected and there are signs that explain why they are there and all about their lives. Very fun to watch indeed.

What? its just a park!

By Tom B |

No I didn't see any of those little cute prairie dogs around the park. Drove thru there very slowly, mostly very dry bland land with a little river going thru it.

Fun

By Waunderlust |

This definitely exceeded my expectations. They're so cute. They seemed to really love the cheetos, carrots, and Doritos people were throwing at them

Needs help

By daviddelossantos1129 |

We were looking for some fun things to do in Lubbock and thought this might be fun. It's was a little disappointing. The place was in disrepair and need some cleaning up. Maybe add shrubs or trees. But all in all it is hat it is, a prairie dog town.

Must see for kids or kids at heart

By PixSmith |

I will confess. I am a sucker for this kind of attraction, hands down. Have been, ever since I was a kid. This one is a must-see every time I am in town.

Back in the 20s. a guy was worried that the prairie dogs might be developed out of existence, so he created a safe, accessible, and easy to view location for them to thrive. Lots of descendants of the original prairie dogs live here now, and babies seem to be around all the time. It's a nice, quiet place to just have a great moment watching nature in a natural, though encouraged environment.

Go in a bad mood -- it won't last.

It is what it is

By E_Albertstein |

While visitors can see prairie dogs all around town, they are pretty much guaranteed to see them here. We like to take folks out there just because it has been around for a long time and the prairie dogs appreciate the popcorn.

Fun to watch

By jojojan1 |

There are prairie dogs everywhere! The map on Tripadvisor took us to the park, but not the prairie dog town. Luckily it is clearly marked. You can spend a lot of time watching and feeding the cute prairie dogs. They are all very fat and used to people.

Free Views of Cuteness

By Sonja M |

It is a small area where you can view the Prairie Dogs and if you are lucky some owls. I love to listen to the sound they make when people come around. They are very cute but don't try to catch or pet them. Worth a short visit.

Wide open spaces a stones throw from Downtown

By mmerdude |

I have been running races here for the past 7-8 years. The park is very spacious, the terrain is diverse & interesting, and you may even see a gopher, er, Prairie Dog. It has lakes, shade trees, picnic tables, an amusement park for the young ones (or the young at heart!), baseball diamonds, & even an 18 hole golf course! Highly recommended to, "Get away from it all!"

Watching Prairie Dons

By Martha L |

I took 2 grandchildren to visit Prairie Dog Town. They seemed to enjoy it. They watched the Prairie Dogs dart about and go in and out of their underground homes. There is no charge and it only take a few minutes to see all the activity.

Great place to watch them and take pictures

By Dan P |

This place was started in an attempt to pervent what had been a very common animal from going extint because of a poison program by the US Government. They are completely unafraid of people so you can watch them interact and get great pictures. There is some shade, which helps in the summer!

Worth the drive out there

By mptxmom |

Second time out to see the prairie dogs and definitely worry it!! All ages loved it.
PS...they love cheez-its

Always a highlight!! LOVE Prairie Dog Town!

By LabsR1st |

Don't miss these darling ones and be sure to take some peeled baby carrots for them!! Such a wonderful and unique place at the top of McKenzie State Park!

Sooo cute

By Cosmo J |

Easy to find and very peaceful. It was fun watching the antics and the adult and juvenile prairie dogs. I did get to see the owl but wasn't able to get a picture.

Fun for Kids Young & Old

By Violet D |

Fun to watch these cute little marmots running back & forth and in & out of their holes. They make little barking noises, and our kiddos loved watching them. This is fun & free entertainment. Find a shady patch under a tree or sit on the rock wall; watch them for as long as you like and then move on.

Fun visit

By Suzanne |

Cute stop if in the area. There are many prairie dogs to see and there is not a high fence or obstruction preventing photos or giving treats. Some are out in the parking lot area that you can get closer to. They like to stick close to their burrow but came a little closer for snacks. Good story of the creation of this “town” to prevent extinction here. Worth a stop.

Prairie dog town – Lubbock

By Teresa J |

Prairie dog town – Lubbock used to be a really fun place to go but it has become run down. We were actually there last summer and there was no grass and it smelled of urine. Little kids usually really enjoy prairie dog town and I would suggest taking some carrots when you go. The city needs to clean up and plant shade trees and put some benches. This is a very well known area but it needs some improvements.

So amazing

By Nick J |

This site inside Mackenzie Park is overflowing with prairie dogs. They will approach you hoping for baby carrots, which you can offer them. Don't touch, though. They are wild (but not vicious) animals, after all. It's crazy to read that the whole colony began with 2 mating pairs of prairie dogs!

Summertime lazy day entertainment

By janalee63 |

Prairie dog town needs a face lift but it is a great place to watch the prairie dogs
play. Bring a bag of popcorn, M&M's or McDonalds French fries and watch
them come out of their holes.

Cool for a little while

By AliMaddieGood |

This is a neat place to stop for 15 minutes. Bring some baby carrots with you to feed the prairie dogs- they will come running out of their holes to get some food!

Cute but not well signed

By Ashley R |

The kids will love it, you may not be so excited, especially on a hot day. The signage is not good once you get into the park, my suggestion is once you get to the perimeter fence of the golf course kinda follow it around until you get to the opening for the Prairie Dog town.

The Prairie dogs themselves don't seem to be aware of the border of their town and are actually everywhere.

No big deal!

By LindaMcB |

We took our youngest grand kids to prairie dog town.It wasnt a big desl. We see them in burrows all over the roads. The kids watched them pop up in different holes then saw the park and asked to go there instead. Oh well... we tried.

Customer service support

By Patty C |

Bwaaahaha! When I first saw one of these critters, I just couldn't believe how adorable and SMART they are! They have an alarm system, critters that stand guard over the underground nests, which are lengthy and intricately built. I laughed sooooo hard with delight watching these furry critters. Y'all come now!

Terrific

By carolyns823 |

Fascinating! On the outskirts of Lubbock and well worth the drive. So entertaining to watch and nicely kept park.

Cute prairie dogs

By Laurie G |

A free place to visit and see cute prairie dogs in a field. There were some kids there feeding them carrots. It's towards the back of Mackenzie Park so you just follow the snakey road. There are signs that point the way. It's behind a baseball diamond so it's kinda hard to see.

You Can Feed the Prairie Dogs

By Mutant Miscreant |

I had heard a lot about Prairie Dog Town at Mackenzie Park on Lubbock’s east side but never visited until July 2019.

There is no entrance fee and the prairie dogs are accustomed to people. They will not run away provided you don’t make any sudden moves or rush toward them. Just sit or squat down and let them come to you.

They will take food from your hands. We fed them pistachios and cherries.

They seemed quite grateful.

Your kids will love this place.

You Have to Hand It to K.N. Clapp and Ross Edwards

By Bob K |

We all have "pet-projects" but few would go this far. To save the black-tailed Prairie Dog from extinction, Clapp and Edwards trapped two critters and created Prairie Dog Town in 1935. Clapp oversaw PDT's operation and successful preservation of the cute but pesky mammals until his death in 1969. Amazing what a few good hearted people can do if they try. There's a lesson here for all of us,
Free to the public, located in a large Public Park called Mackenzie near the city and Texas Tech University.

You got to see the little fellows

By bobal59 |

My wife loves to go and see the Prairie Dogs in the park. We go there every time we are in Lubbock. Brings back old memories from the 1950's.

So cute!!

By Amanda B |

I was surprised by the amount of prairie dogs! They were super used to humans and got very close, but if you move to quickly they run away. They are fun to sit and watch for a few minutes. Must-see if you are In Lubbock!

I love prairie dog town.

By eliseo S |

I've been going since the 59's. Love it. The prairie dogs are so cute and entertaining. It's a don't miss if your in Lubbock Texas.

So cute!

By libbydeyoung |

I'm not sure who enjoyed seeing the Prairie Dogs more, me or my 2 year old. Fun, free thing to do in the evening.

Don't expect too much

By cutydudu |

This place is quite fun for those who have never seen prairie dogs before or family with kids. But don't expect too much or plan for more than 20 minutes stop, because it's nothing but a square area with lots of prairie dogs surrounded by a concrete wall. Prairie dogs are very cute but they can stay far away from people, so just be patient and bring food with you(bread, seeds, edc).

Cute

By Isa |

So many free things to do in town This is one of them. Grab some fruit and veggies and spend some time with these cute critters. There is information on them posted so you can read about these guys. Morning is the best time to visit. We cut the fruit and veggies so it's easier for them to eat and so we feed more of them.

Love These Guys

By Lorri L |

Our family took us here while we were in town visiting. These little furballs were so cute! The only thing that separates you from them is a little wall so you're able to toss food to them. Some are a bit tamer and will take food from your hand. They love doritos! Some have created a colony outside of the fence and fed them also. This is in a huge park area where you can picnic or take the kids to a playground when they're tired of the wildlife.

Something quick & fun to do

By smlkennedy |

We’re in town for a college visit and wanted to see some of the local sites. This is an easy place to get to. The prairie dogs are so cute and fun to watch. We stayed about 10 minutes.

It's interesting, especially if you have pre-teen children.

By Chet S |

The prairie dogs were interesting. They were very industrious and active while we were there. Some had also escaped their enclosure. Keep your pets on a leash if you bring them.

Free cuteness!

By Kathy B |

Prairie Dog Town is located in a park. There is a viewing area and the prairie dogs are numerous and active. They like carrots and sunflower seeds. Be careful driving in as the animals have tunneled outside the enclosure and can be seen everywhere. Kids no the young at heart will enjoy a quick stop here.

Garbage, Plastic and Feeding the Prairie Dogs

By Sunshinebabies3 |

While I thought it was fascinating to see all these little critters roaming about, I was disturbed at the amount of litter nearby. Two of the Prairie Dogs (a mom and her baby) were literally fighting over a plastic knife and another eating a plastic applesauce cup. Pretty sad that such an amazing little town was kept so filthy by the people! There were a ton of firework debris and other garbage. I also noticed a girl with a box of Cheez-Its and candy feeding it to the wild animals. I am not okay with this someone should change this and not let anyone feed them. My son was feeding one a carrot without my knowledge and ended up getting bit. I wasn't angry with the prairie dog, but more upset that he thought it was okay to feed these animals, as others were doing it. If I lived in Lubbock, I would make it my mission to change this and also volunteer on cleaning up a dirty park! Otherwise, it's wonderful to see this little Prairie Dog Town!

Love the p-dogs

By Cindy T |

Everything we go to Lubbock we make a stop to see the Prairie Dogs. It is very relaxing watching them. I you have kids bring some small carrots to throw out to the p- dogs. It is cool how they pick them up and ear. them.

Fun hour

By Robben T |

Take healthy snacks, apples, carrots or sunflower seeds. The apples and carrots are easier to throw.

When you enter the park there is a small area on the right that has some prairie dogs but this isn’t the place. Go in, take the first street to the right then left at the “T”. Town is straight ahead.

Love to watch the Prairie dogs

By Tanis D |

We drive up and just watch these little guys run around. Before you know it, a full hour has passed by.

Prairie dog disappointment

By Greg G |

Hot, and prairie dogs were quite a ways away. They really didn't do anything. I wouldn't waste my time.

Fun morning activity!

By Leslie M |

We stopped here in our visit to Lubbock with our 14 year old daughter. So fun. Stayed about 45 minutes and loved it. Stop for baby carrots on the way. They like the water in them. The ground is littered with dry cereal and corn, so they will race toward something fresh.

A national treasure

By Kacy A |

They are so cute, and I appreciate the conservation of their town. We have a town in OKC that is in danger. I hope someone would do this and make it an attraction. They are adorable to watch.

Fun free break stop

By SpotTVMom |

We were passing through Lubbock and this was a fun quick stop for the kids. Free is always great! Lots of Prairie dogs close up. Sign says they are related to squirrels. It seemed that they like to eat oranges. There was evidence of orange peels on the ground. I happened to have a clementine in my pocket so we offered up a few pieces. It seemed to be a hit with the prairie dogs!

Fun for the Family

By John B |

It is Free and located in a park just bring carrot sticks or some other munchies to feed them. They come up to the wall and stand on there feet to look at you

Best 5 minutes view of prairie dogs

By JFred3733 |

If you're interested in watching cute little prairie dogs and one little burrowing owl? This is your ticket!

Love coming here!

By Diane |

I love visiting Prairie Dog Town whenever I'm in Lubbock. There are lots of them and they're so cute and fun to watch. There are signs at the barrier telling people not to cross but when we were there this past weekend 4 college age women were in there near the entrances trying to feed them Cheetos and taking pictures! Wild animals should not be fed junk food and the prairie dogs were vocal, I'm sure trying to get these women to go back where they belong. Go and watch them and respect them. They're fun.

nice

By Riverbabe60 |

we enjoyed taking the baby to see all the prairie dogs and she loved feeding them Cheetos, although I believe feeding them is discouraged. not a lot here but a large fenced area with lots of prairie dogs but cool none the less.

Been to this site many times, same stuff, prairie dogs living thieir lives. So?

By Gerald G |

If you are not from the Texas area it might be something to see, one time. Then you could say you have seen it.

Cool little spot

By Louis F |

There are Prairie Dogs allover Lubbock but it was cool to see their little "town" still. They are very curious and there were plenty of them running about when we visited.

Unexpected joy - Bring carrots!

By Michele C |

Great story how Clapp family wanted to preserve the prairie dog. Make sure you bring carrots or something for the little guys to eat. They sure are cute!

Good thing it's free

By Kari S |

So yes they are cute but they can be seen all over Lubbock. It's a good thing it's free or I would have been upset to pay for this. This is not an attraction. It's a field where you can see the cute little animals which are really everywhere. Lubbock needs to investigate other cities to understand a " Free Attraction".

Lots of Prairie Dogs

By 6isenoughforme |

Prairie Dog Town is located inside Mackenzie Park. It is well worth visiting. We visited on a very hot summer day and was surprised to see all the prairie dogs out. We fed them pistachios, tomatoes, and carrots. They really like dry cat food according to a man that was there feeding them that. He attracted lots of them with his cat food. There is no fee to enter and it's wide open, so safe for social distancing. It is open during COVID. A nice open-air place to get out of the house for a bit and still be safe. Enjoyed watching them play and eat.

Prarie Puppers Everywhere!

By Tracy M |

"They're EVERYWHERE!" As I am driving along entering the town of Prarie Dogs, I realized that they are everywhere haha, I am from PA so excuse my excitement.

Most of them did their thing, came close to the wall where we watched and did cute little things like eat carrots, groom each other, do a funny dance with each other, but there was this one little dude that definitely did not want me coming close to him (her?) or his hole....in the ground- don't be sick people. Anywho- this was something I would never see in PA and I am so glad I went to visit these little guys who are apparently all over Lubbock and little unwanted guests on property as they dig quite a few holes and tunnels!

I would like to know more about what that sign says about the history of this place and the poison program- what was that about? What poison program? Yikes! Glad these prarie puppers made it though.

It was hot (it's Texas) and windy- you may get dust in your eyes so be aware of that!

Outstanding adventure

By Candy M |

Do not even think of going through Lubbock without visiting the Prairie Dog Town. This attraction is easy to get to and extremely entertaining. i could have stayed all day if we had not been on a timeline. There is only a 2 foot wall separating the visitors from the prairie dogs. It made a good seat for watching these animals go about their daily life with antics of the babies, alert barks by the sentries, and tunnels being cleaned out This fascinating place is free.

Big hit!

By raelise |

My 10 year old loved visiting the prairie dogs! They have definitely moved beyond the enclosure, but she loved running around to see them, collecting golf balls from the neighboring driving range, and just walking around the park. We spent about an hour and a half, but it’s worth a stop even for a short visit.

Must Do Activity

By Michelle H |

Such a great story and it is so cool watching the prairie dogs. They are so friendly and will come right up to you to get a quick snack. We didn't take anything our first trip but went back the next day to visit with carrots and apples. I was in Lubbock for three days and went every day!

A unique and memorable visit!

By Betsy M |

We thoroughly enjoyed our stop to this quiet park on our way from Bozeman to Billings. We had time this day in our schedule for a fairly leisurely drive, and enjoyed making stops along the way. I found it in our tour book and we decided to stop by and we were glad we did. While the book said "thousands" of prairie dogs would be popping up out of their holes, we found it to be more like "dozens" but it was still good fun and the kids really liked it. We weren't too far from them, but binoculars helped, and I believe we made to much noise at first. Enter quietly!

Its a waist of time

By Livies Yorkies & Biewers |

I just dont get this place. Who wants to watch little rats eat and dig holes in the ground. These guys are destructive to the ground.

DON'T GO

By Timothy W |

Having grown up in Lubbock the Prairie Dog Town is nothing but a concrete wall about 3 feet high surrounding an area of prairie dogs. This is located next to a city golf course so you will also see many little white round things laying within the walls as well. It is embarrassing when I see that Lubbock is advertising this little square block. There are much larger natural areas of prairie dogs located just outside the city Loop 289 for viewing. Please do not come to Lubbock to see this attraction. Lubbock has much better things to see!

Cute and free entertainment!

By twerpies3 |

We were looking for something quick and simple to see while in Lubbock. The prairie dogs were so cute! And you can't beat a free activity. You can spend 5 minutes to 30, depending on your interest.

Fun To Feed and See

By Lily Ziger |

Cute little buggers. We fed them carrots and watermelon.
We pulled out our chairs and sat for a couple hours.
Nice place.

Up close Prairie Dog viewing

By Kerri S |

Be sure to take some carrots or lettuce for these adorable little critters. It's a little hard to find, but once we did kind of cool to see these guys. You can see them along the road sides everywhere, but this place makes it easy to throw out some treats for the little guys.

A small stop to see cute critters

By Thomas P |

Stopped here cause how can you not when you here of a prairie dog farm. Little critters were to cute and fun to watch. Small viewing area but fun nonetheless.

Fun to see

By KLBWylie_TX |

Fun little place to see the prairie dogs. If you are in the area go see and learn about the little critters.

Adorable little rodents!

By Jill B |

Prairie Dog Town is in the middle of large park and fairly close to other sites of interest like the Bayer Museum of Agricultural and the American Windpower Center. The little guys are really quite cute and have a large area enclosed by a short stone wall. However, as someone else mentioned, they have expanded beyond the boundaries of their enclosure, so be sure to pay attention when walking/driving around!

Fun for all!

By Lynn S |

This was a fun place to visit. Everyone from little kids to senior adults would enjoy seeing these delightful animals. If you bring baby carrots they will come up and take them right out of your hand. Their antics are fun to watch. If it hadn’t been so hot outside I think we could have watched them for hours. This is a must do when you visit Lubbock.

Nice place for a picnic

By Russell H |

Kind of hard to find, but right next to the golf course (like caddy shack) hundreds of prairie dogs. Living as I expect they did in the wild, along side other wildlife and beautiful flowers.

Prairie Dog

By captclyde |

I’ve been going to Prairie Dog Town for over 50 years and every time is a great experience watching those little critters.

They are so cute

By Joe J |

Easy to get to, just off I27 - this enclave has been here since 1935. A good history of the prairie dog and its habitat. Takes 5 minutes or more -depending on what the little rascals are doing

Kids love it

By Benskie46 |

I took my two kids (7, 9) here when visiting my parents. My kiddos were so engaged in feeding and watching the prairie dogs. It's a quick 20-30 min stop, nothing else to do in there. We did this while we waited for the ranch and heritage museum to open.

Worth a visit

By Marilyn D |

Lovely to see prairie dogs in their own space. We were able to see them eating and going in and out of their burrows.

Dogtown

By jeffsmedia |

Cute, the owl came out thought it may eat, interesting though. They are cute as can be and the way they talk to each other is cute

Interesting place!

By 15franciscaj |

This is a Great place to take the kids! There are many interesting things to see here. The kids will enjoy it!

Adorable!

By Ashley C |

It's very adorable and well-kept! You can watch the prairie dogs in their natural environment. You can watch them chirp when a predatory bird's shadow appears over them, watch them with their young, see them interact with one another, and see their every day behaviors. I recommend this to anyone who loves animals.

They are fun to watch if you are in the area.

By okiesooner09 |

The people at the National Ranching Heritage Center told us about the prairie dog town in McKenzie Park. The prairie dogs are kind of all over but most seem to be in the athletic field. You can't get too terribly close to them but they are fun to watch and listen to them bark at you.

Free Activity - You Cant Beat That!

By Trussoni |

This is a nondescript place but the little Prairie Dogs are cute to watch as they pop up out of their tunnel system and scamper around. Watched a few people feeding a few but we elected to steer clear of that due to concerns about rodent diseases. None the less, visiting some of our family who now lives in Lubbock, it was on our "bucket list" to see a Prairie Dog and we saw plenty! One in our party has lived in Lubbock for 12 years and had never visited before! Interesting insights on the information board that tells the story of how Prairie Dog Town started. It's free so you can not beat that and the little critters are darn cute!

perfect stop for travelers with children

By Rick B |

this would be an incredible stop for people travelling with kids, We stopped after being told about it by a co-worker who grew up in the area. It was really neat. a herd of Prairie dogs that have been preserved by the city of Lubbock since 1934 I think it was. you can feed them or the city or someone had thrown out several lettuce leaves while we were there. They talk to each other and fight over the food. there are a few courageous ones who have burrowed out of the enclosure so be careful when you drive up!

Cutie patooties

By Diceswife |

We had to go twice while on our trip to Lubbock. It's such a nice way to spend time outdoors while getting in some nature. These lil guys were so much fun to observe. Before our second trip we googled healthy edibles for these buggers & were prepared with fresh carrot tips & lettuce. They seemed to be a huge hit & we shared with other on-lookers.

Well.....

By greg y |

Prarie dogs......and more prarie dogs.I used to live around thousands of em.Probably great for little kids....but...seriously!

Fun and cute!

By swrsa2 |

This place was really a fun and easy outing, and the prairie dogs were so cute! Not afraid of humans in any way and so many babies. Kids will love this!

Nice for a quick stop

By Mees U |

There's plenty to see, for sure. If you like a lot of praire dogs then. Nice stop if you happen to be at lubbock. It's not very spectacular, but it's free and fun to see.

A free, quick and enjoyable experience

By Ingunn Saur M |

The prairie dogs are really cute and social, and have a curious attitude. I was surprised that most of them stay inside their designated area (there is a wall there, which is really low).

If you drive by and have 10 minutes to spare, it is certainly worthwhile to have a look!

Free activity for families!

By Mrspitts08 |

A great place to learn about and see real prairie dogs. I was shocked at the amount of little critters. The day we went we were the only people there so we were able to relax and let the kids watch the prairie dogs.

Amusing Animal

By Nas S |

Not a very common animal until you visit this location. They're somewhat shy but when you're still, they will come out and be themselves which is quite amusing to watch. Definitely one of the highlights if you're visiting or driving through Lubbock.

So fun to feed the prairie dogs!

By KSeeley929 |

I wasn't expecting such an interactive experience. We didn't have any food, but someone offered us a handful of small spinach leaves. The prairie dogs were so cute and cautiously took the spinach out of our hands. I thought we would be there for 5 minutes, but ended up staying almost a 1/2 hour. Definitely bring food.

A close up View!!!

By franklinmilford |

A city park in the not so good area of town, there are signs directing you to Prairie Dog Town. It really is a concrete wall with one shaded area to watch these playful little critters. You can get pretty close to them for some cute pics, and they are becoming more used to humans, cute poses aren't hard to find. Not much here for the adults, but kids should find this amazing(I did!!). This park offers a lot in the line of tables, etc.,so a picnic and some sunscreen could make for the perfect afternoon out in Lubbock!

Super Cute!

By jennyD5308RG |

OMG, i fell in love with these little creatures. They are super cute and you are able to feed them. Every time a bird comes around they make a sound to each other to warn one another and they all duck their little bodies.

Cute, Funny Little Creatures!

By VanEsq12 |

Even though they are a landscaping nightmare, these little creatures are a pleasure to watch. This is a free attraction, and offers quite a bit of entertainment. If you have small children, they will especially enjoy these animal antics!

Cute little things

By cedar4604 |

These guys take over an area of town and people just come to see them peek out of their holes. Couldn't stay too long.

Fat friendly prairie dogs everywhere

By p w |

I went here to do little mountain biking, started right by the prairie dog town. They were scurrying all over and seemed to be very brave. it would be a fun place to take kids.

Cute Prairie Dogs

By Martha B |

You will find more prairie dogs and burrowing owls just driving around town, than you will find at Prairie Dog Town these days. Those cute little critters have discovered they like the freedom of choosing their own home outside of the walls. As you drive into Lubbock, be on the lookout for our cute little greeters to our town.

Prairie Dog Town is boring.

By Dennis E |

This is the most ridiculous, boring, thing you have ever seen. There are much better things to do in Lubbock, like Buddy Holly center, Silent Wings museum, Science Spectrum, etc. anything but Prairie Dog Town.

Prairie dog town

By CoolidgeCranko |

Enjoyable and quiet. Be patient and let the tiny animals behave naturally. They akre quick to respond to stimuli. Avoid loud noise and trying to feed them. Just observe.

So cute!

By Courtney K |

Prairie dogs are a rarity for me. We don't really have them out in California, so it was a definite treat to visit Prairie Dog Town. Plus, such a cute story behind it's creation! Definitely a fun stop!

Loved the Activity!

By WILBUR F |

We visited recently in the early evening, which was a great time to see them out and about, enjoying the carrots left by visitors. These little guys are quite used to human traffic, so it takes a lot to chase them off. So fun to watch. People have a hard time cleaning up after themselves, however, and the trash cans were overflowing, which was an eyesore and a shadow on the facility. It was however, quite enjoyable to watch their interactions until they reached their bedtime.

Fun

By smimms56 |

This is one place that there is never a dull moment with so many Prairie Dogs running around. These little guys seems to be well fed by visitors. They can keep you entertained for hours. Fun for kids to watch.

Was fun over sixty years ago and still is.

By Vicki E |

This is a must stop by place for families visiting Lubbock that aren't used to seeing prairie dogs. This attraction is free. Has been there since I was kid. They are interesting to watch. Can stop for just a few minutes to look them over or spend more time in this park. Be sure you take a camera
Close enough you can watch from the vehicle if it is too hot or too cold to enjoy being outdoors. There is picnic area nearby as well.

Prairie dog town

By Christine M |

Park seems in a bit of disrepair. The prairie dogs have escaped their habitat and established themselves behind the softball fields

Overload of cuteness

By Houston_Eriol |

How can you not love this cute little furry friends? yeah, not much going on here but if you are passing by it is fun. We had lunch there and watched the play for a bit.

Nice quiet place to kill a little time

By Kelly S |

Located in a large multi-use park. No shade so do not plan on sitting in your car to watch the parriedogs frolic. I had to kill some time before my flight to Dallas and saw the #5 rating on TripAdvisor. Cute but not really worth time especially since you can go to the Wind Power museum close by.

Neat place - fascinating to watch these little guys!

By amymlong |

We stopped here on a trip to Lubbock and were pleasantly surprised at this free attraction. Make sure to brink something to feed them as that is the most entertaining part! It's so cute to see them share the food together or run off with it and jump in a hole! Supposedly they are more numerous in the morning or evening when it's cooler, but we went around 4pm on a pretty warm Texas day and there were still a bunch of them. Very cute little creatures and fun to watch:)

Always a must-see for me

By Xip3 |

This is the best. A cool, forward thinking attraction lo those many years ago, and it's a lot of fun to just sit and watch. The educational component is good as well, and all in all, it's a fun stop when you're in Lubbock.

Yep! That's a Prairie Dog!

By Michele with Ports and Paths |

Just did a quick drive by to see all the cute prairie dogs. They don't let ya get too close. They run down there holes when they see ya coming up on them. However. staying in the car, driving around the lot we did experience a very young prairie dog come right up to the vehicle. We took pictures of course. You either like them and will enjoy seeing them or ya won't. That's that.

Great up close view of Prairie Dogs

By Cynthia C |

This was really interesting to watch the prairie dogs, being from an area where we do not have them they were fun to watch. There were several babies also. We also got to see ground owls. That was a treat.

Cute way to spend 15 minutes

By chade171 |

Daughter loved it. The animals are pretty cute. It's a good way to spend 15 minutes but that's about it.

Simple, but free and educational

By DylanCFP |

Not much bigger than a small back yard, but there were a lot of prairie dogs there. Some interesting facts on prairie dogs, but best to combine it with visits to the windmill museum and agricultural museum.

By Greenman01 |

If you're passing through Lubbock STOP HERE. Bring 5 slices of bread and throw them to the Prairie Dogs. Watch them hesitate then hurry to grab the bread with their two tiny hands and nibble nibble nibble until the bread is gone. Great way to enjoy time with the ones you love. Excellent place to come at the beginning of a date night with that someone special in your life.

Love This Place

By Beverly An M |

We have watched the Prairie Dogs since we were small.... nearly 60 years. It is an awesome place to see varmints.

Prairie Dog Town is the worst that Lubbock has to offer

By Diving_Cyclist |

Stupid wasteland--a sad ghetto for critters. Don't waste your time, go to the windmill museum instead.

If You Like Animals, You Will Love It!

By Anne Marie M |

Prairie Dog Town is inside McKenzie Park, right off the highway and easy to find. We went in the morning and all the prairie dogs were sitting up, looking around. We forgot carrots but improvised with a granola bar, that worked! After trying to infiltrate the critters bypassing the fence, one called the warring and they all quickly hid, I don't recommend this approach! We ended up back where we had started, and found a lone prairie dog outside the fence! After patiently waiting about 15 feet away, it scampered out of it's hole and sat up, eating and barking to it's friends. Highly entertaining and I will go back for more antics on my next trip to Lubbock.

Cute burrowing animals.

By Zespy |

Interesting to see but would not make a special trip! Many in a fenced area of Lubbock, but unable to get close due to holes everywhere, even outside fence.

Nice Little Side Trip

By Brenda L |

My 9-year old daughter was very excited to go here and see the prairie dogs. Prairie Dog Town is located inside Mackenzie Park and I had to ask directions a couple of times. Fortunately, there was an event going on and plenty of people to ask. It's a big park and we had to drive back into it quite a bit to get to the prairie dogs. I'd heard that early morning or evening were the best times to see them, so we were there by about 8:15 in the morning, and were not disappointed. It's a big open field with a low brick wall around it. You can't walk around it. You can only view from one spot and we were fortunate enough to have a little guy pop up out of his hole right next to the wall where we were standing. He wasn't shy either. He stood right there, giving me several different poses while I shot photos of him with both my phone and my Rebel. He was not intimidated by us in the least. We could see several mounds out in the field with clusters of prairie dogs on them. I highly recommend binoculars (which my daughter had) and a good zoom lens if you want to take pics. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed her time there and we learned quite a bit about prairie dogs and about how the town came into being. It was a nice little side trip and I recommend it if, like I said, you have binoculars and/or a good zoom lens. It's totally free and if you get lucky, you may just find one right by the wall.

The cutest ever

By JRP |

The prairie dogs bob in and out of their burrows and scurry about to the delight of if young and old alike. So unique and fun to visit again and again. We always come by when in town. So fun

Kids loved it!!

By christopherwV6786TA |

Quick outing, but fun! Kids loved to feed them so take some food. It was my daughter's birthday and she had chosen to go there. Good clean fun, didn't cost a thing!

What's not to love!

By Ccccranberries |

I once heard prairie dogs described as "fat dirt squirrels." While it gave me a chuckle, they are absolutely adorable "fat dirt squirrels!" They are very entertaining to watch. Bring food to give them! They really like fruits and veg! Absolutely adorable, free entertainment with a little history to boot.

Fun place to watch prairie dogs

By Sharon C |

Although the enclosure could use some repair we had a great time watching the prairie dogs. They were quite entertaining to us.

Cutest little creatures

By Teresa H |

Our daughter is about to graduate at Tech, and I finally convinced my husband to let me see the prairie dogs. They are the cutest creatures popping their heads out of their holes and waddling around in their natural state. It would be a fun stop for families with younger children.

Small taste

By hcdmom |

We have been here a few times and each time is an adventure. It is a small combo of rides for a nice day. It reminded me of a carnival as a kid. The park is fun for the family if you don't expect a huge theme park. We took it as a leisurely taste of fun for all.

Dads in hospital and needed some fresh air.

By Mommsieofmo |

We literally squealed in delight when we drove in and saw all those adorable little prairie dogs. Okay maybe its because we have spent the last 3 days in the hospital but seriously they are adorable and they made our day so happy.

You should definitely stop by!!

Simple and free but fun!

By Sam C |

We stayed about 20 minutes - but enjoyed the prairie dogs and their cuteness!
They come right up to the wall and expect to be fed - we fed them goldfish snacks but they really like veggies and nuts. They are also outside of the walled area - and just fun to watch run around and jumped up and screech! Fun a quick family visit to break the Lubbock city scene!

By eaterofallthingsgood |

to each his own but if you like looking at ground rats that are one big green poop sack then you will like this

VERY EDUCATIONAL, FUN FAMILY EXPERIENCE

By Cherie G |

Up close and personal with the history of saving an important animal in the ecosystem. Be sure to bring along celery, carrots or Cheetos to feed them. They wag their tails, bark, and scurry around eating the food if they're hungry. Easy learning board showing their lifestyle and how they fit into the wild.

Worth a side trip to visit these cuties

By Angie Mc |

Lots and lots of prairie dogs. People were feeding them (I'm not sure if I agree with that or not..coz they were giving them all sorts ...so if you really want to do that i'd check in advance what they can digest!!!) but these are super cute. On a warm day the park is nice to walk around but if you only visit the dogs area themselves its still worth a trip

Good Place to Learn about Prairie Dogs

By teds759 |

Praire Dogs were a major nuisance as I was growing up. Prairie Dog Town is a great place to take your children and grandchildren so they understand the character of these animals.

A fun place to relax!

By opp1998 |

Prairie Dog Town is a wonderful place to go when you need life's stress to melt away. As you watch the little critters run around and interact with each other, it's impossible not to smile and laugh. Their "bark" sounds more like a bird chirping and is quite amusing to hear, especially when many of them sound off. Look for the owls and read the sign about why the owls are there. I only wish I had brought binoculars to see the prairie dogs more closely. PLEASE DON"T BE STUPID AND THROW HUMAN FOOD ACROSS THE WALL!!!

Best reason to visit Lubbock

By Mary-FoodieBoo |

Mackenzie Park can be sketchy to be honest. Every time we visit, we're either alone or we wish we were...which is a shame because the park has possibilities AND contains one of the best animal destinations ever: Prairie Dog Town! I know these critters are unwelcome in most prairie backyards, but this sanctuary is a true PD metropolis and you can get pretty close to happy PD antics. One time we arrived when they were just waking up and stretching their little arms. This month they looked fat and were chowing down on a late-morning breakfast. They don't stay within their sanctuary either. I love this place. Be aware of your surroundings when you go.

Cute and real

By Heather D |

Praire dogs can be meddlesome creatures to ranchers, farmers, and maintenance people. However, you have to appreciate their unique style s the band together to protect their young from natural predators birds, snakes and others. The hawks that have nests in the ground nearbye. They are cute to watch dig, communicate, and clean their cute faces. Definatly fun for the whole family (kids, adults, teens, and tweens) unless you don't like the out doors.

Fun local wildlife exhibit!

By kidztrvl2 |

To watch these creatures in their habitat is amazing. They are entertaining and busy. It doesn't take long to drive to the park and take a look. Certainly a different tour that you will never forget.

Nice Free Attraction

By Chris N |

A free and easily accessible attraction which gives guests an up close and personal look at one of West Texas' keystone species. This is a nice side attraction for those passing through Lubbock or those with small children. Best to visit in the early morning or evening as the animals are less active during the warmer parts of the day.

What's not to like?

By Taenin |

Just as the name implies, if you want to see prairie dogs, you won't be disappointed. We took baby carrots to feed them and they seemed to love them.

for people that have never seen prairie dogs this is the place to go. Such cute little critters. They scurry and scat every where and their little chatter just makes you laugh.

Funny Little Praire Dogs!

By janalee63 |

This site is just plain fun! These furry little creatures are just fun to watch! We take McDonalds fries and trough to the Prairie Dogs. They just love them. They also enjoy candy corn and bread. The ecological environment is fun to observe. There are birds, burrowing owls in the enclosure as well. Take your grandchildren for a fun filled time visiting this habitat.

Loved This!

By rodjk37 |

My sister and I saw this on a map and thought it sounded interesting. When we found it we were entranced. Loads of busy little prairie dogs all over and they just went about their business as if we were not there. Got some cute pictures. What a fun place.!

Cute critters

By CDL79 |

The prairie dogs are cute, especially if they are "talking," but otherwise there's not much to see here. Great for little kids but don't go out of your way.

Cute!

By Emily F |

Went here in summer before school started and they were so cute! The noises they make and the way they stare at you is adorable. Not something that takes very long, but if you're board one afternoon give it a try!😊

Interesting, but Strange

By Tastefullycoco - The Simple Treasures |

I guess I was expecting more of a zoo type experience here and was surprised that this is a top destination in Lubbock. Basically there are a bunch of prairie dogs in an abandoned driving range in a park. Interesting to see prairie dogs in their natural setting, but overall not a major attraction!

Cute little things!

By zoomblur |

Having lived in West Texas before, I will tell you Prairie Dogs can be a nuisance. They dig huge burrows and multiply like crazy, tearing up your yard and consuming vegetation. So, having a place like this to watch them in action is very cool, and the kids love it. Take some lettuce or fruit with you to feed them. Also look for burrowing owls as an added experience.

Cute!

By Mary |

These little guys are so cute to watch. Having read earlier posts, we came armed with a loaf of bread and some carrots. Almost got one to come up to me to take a carrot, but s school bus drove up and discharged a bunch of kids and they ran for cover. Very enjoyable.

OK for a few minutes

By jeffsm5111 |

This is a cute exhibit within MacKenzie State Park. You can stand behind a concrete wall and watch a large number of prairie dogs burrowing and running around. A small exhibit provides some details about their lifestyle. After about 15 minutes, our attention was waning.

Nice place to visit. Wish it was not necessary.

By Texas Traveler 59 |

A good place to see Prairie Dogs up close. They are used to human. DO NOT FEED THEM. Set up to save the species in West Texas because the government was poisoning them.

Fun Time!

Great little place! There were so many prairie dogs to watch. Grandson loved feeding the little critters.

Cutest roadside diversion ever

By Ryan H |

Road trip through town and had to stop. Quick 15 min visit to throw some peanuts and check out the cute animals. Kids got a kick out of it. Worth a stop if you have time.

what a kick in the pants

By rexhans |

ok, you may ask how does prairie dog town rate 5 stars....easy, 6 stars not available. in all seriousness we had a blast. not much more than a field with a short wall around it that serves as nothing more than a decoration but the little devils that reside there was so fun to watch. you know how everywhere you go there are signs that say don't feed the ducks, don't feed the fish, don't feed the whatever, well here you can feed away. don't forget to bring a bag of baby carrots and you are guaranteed to smile, laugh and create the greatest photo ops. surprising how many folks turned up while we were there. this was so much fun.

A great, quick activity for the whole family

By 78jennifere |

You have to check out the prairie dogs while you are in Lubbock. It is free and they are cute. Take some veggies with you to feed them. They are not scared of humans.

OMG at the cuteness! Loving making pit stops to see interesting sites within towns/cities that I visit. This is certainly a must see if you are in the area.

Who new?

By Oliver R |

There is an actual praire dog sanctuary. The little critters are soooo cute. We saw many small babies running around and playing. This trip only takes 15 or 20 minutes to enjoy.

Interesting side trip!

By Huffman4 |

We stopped by here while we were visiting Texas Tech. It was neat seeing all the prairie dogs. This was not a very busy place and was a bit hard to find once inside Mackenzie park.

Been watching the Prairie Dogs for more than 50 years.

By George R |

When I was a child, anytime I was in Lubbock I had to visit the prairie dogs. That was more than 50 years ago. I returned to visit them recently, and they're still there! Very fun to watch these animals.

Going downhill

By 04DTS |

We walked this place regularly a few years back while working in Lubbock. Upon return, we were surprised by the decline in the population of prairie dogs which is not that big of a deal. The big deal is the extremely dangerous deterioration of the walking trail. Why the government has not done anything about this boarders on criminal because it will be difficult for anyone that gets hurt in this area to bring the same type of liability suit against the government that could be brought against a private sector operator. AAMOF, the government would probably shut down access to a private enterprise that was in this condition.

Fun Visit

By chrislbowen |

I saw this listed in a travel magazine, so we decided to check it out as we were passing through Lubbock. It was well worth our time to visit and photograph the prairie dogs! It's a shame that so many people find it necessary to litter here!

That's no dog

By Douglas N |

Garbage was everywhere. If you have never seen a Prairie Dog, go, see them and leave before you fall asleep. They also have dug a tunnel system in a nearby driving range.

Those Little Buggers are Everywhere!

By Deena K |

Great fun for visitors and guests. Just watch how busy these little fellas are! Kids love to watch them run around, popping up here and there. Our grandchildren never miss a stop here when they're in town.

Small, Cute, Fuzzy Critters

By CaptJohn315 |

Prairie Dog Town is a Lubbock perennial favorite. These rodent family brown fuzzy critters group in family units all across the main viewing area. They sound like small squeaky dogs and constantly scurry about. If anyone gets too close the guard prairie dog sounds the alarm and they head to their burrows. If in Lubbock should not be missed, especially for the kids.

Relatives to squirrels; cute

By Bernard W |

Want to see lots and lots of blacktail prairie dogs? This is the place for you. Get up and close, but don’t expect to feed or handle them. Watch with your eyes how these relatives of squirrels dig their holes leading to their homes. Free parking.

It was ok

By Squirrel737 |

If you have kids, you won't be spending much time here especially if they're little. There is virtually no shade and nothing for kids to do. Basically, you either watch the prairie dogs for a few minutes or feed them and then leave. Please research their diet if you want to feed them. I saw a couple hand feeding a few of the more adventurous dogs but most of them stay behind the 2.5 foot barrier wall. I'm glad I got to go see them but it's not the type of place you would plan even a couple of hours on. It's not "park" like at all. The main highlight is just to view the prairie dogs. We stayed about 20 min. They are adorable. Tip: there is a Freddy's diner and there are many prairie dogs in the field next to it. Some people eat there and watch them. My daughter has done that but I have not.

So much fun

By Lee J |

This is one of my favorite places to visit when in Lubbock. The little guys are so much fun to watch and feed. So funny and they love Cheetos.

Yep...prairie dogs

By BarryBroughton |

Not a bad little (quick) stop if you are new to the area or haven't seen prairie dogs before. They can be funny to watch with the kids. Unfortunately, I've had them migrate from the field across the road into my front lawn so they aren't as funny in that environment.

Hard to Find, But Cute Animals

By Dansktex |

I had read about this exhibit and wanted to see the prairie dogs. It was hard to find the entrance to this park, however. I had almost given up and was heading back into town when suddenly on the service road there was a sign for the park (and Fun Land). Once I followed that, I started seeing directional signs for the Prairie Dog Town.

The prairie dogs are cute. However, the exhibit is rather sterile. I had left Lake Lubbock before coming here where I came upon a NATURAL prairie dog area along the side of the road. They were chasing each other, sunning, etc. The prairie dog town in McKenzie Park is enclosed by a concrete wall and overly populated. The "dogs" were cute, but I felt like I was seeing a zoo exhibit.

Such an interesting place!

By Pilatescutie |

My 2-year old daughter LOVED the prairie dog town. It's literally a town of prairie dogs. A must stop for young children!

Cute prairie dogs everywhere!

By CA |

Had no idea what to expect. Drove up to the park and as soon as we got out of the car, we could see them everywhere! They’re very cute and friendly. There is a short wall around the field they live in. You have to watch them from behind the wall. There were some people there feeding them carrots. Glad we took the time to stop and see this.

The best place to visit in Lubbock!

By IloveLubbock |

Great fun and adorable! This is the very best place to visit in Lubbock! Be sure to bring some cut up apples or carrots to toss out for them.

Off the wall stop

By Roberta D |

If you have little ones, they will love to watch these creatures run! Take bread or something to throw out for them to eat.

Fun place to take the kids or grandkids and it's free.

By Ida K B |

These little critters are plentiful at Prairie Dog Town in Mackenzie Park which is conveniently located just east of I-27 in the north Lubbock area. They seem to be more active in the mornings and early evenings. When I was a child, we visited here often and now we occasionally take our grandson to see them. These little critters are a nuisance when they take over our local farms and rural areas near neighborhoods, but they are very plentiful at Prairie Dog Town and are a spectacle to those who have not seen so many of these little critters all in one area (especially kids). It is also close to other attractions that are worth checking out like the American Wind Power Center aka American Windmill Museum and the Bayer Museum of Agriculture which are must see's if you have time.

"Cute"

By donaldp413 |

The Prairie Dog Town is located in MacKenzie Park in Lubbock, TX. They are so cute. They have many tunnels.

Fun

By J P |

We always take visitors for a unique showing if west Texas, showcasing Prairie Dogs Park. Very fun for kids to enjoy natural surrounding.

To cute to describe

By David N |

Yes, they are adorable, yes they waddle, yes they are curious and no they are not afraid of you. Playful prairie dogs and jackrabbits all hanging out, checking you out checking them out. It's a recipe for a fun afternoon. Don't miss it!

Too cute!

By Brande H |

For the animal lover or nature enthusiast this is a must do!" When we were out there were a lot of babies out chasing each other. Not thinking ahead all I had were some potato chips but these little critters will eat just about anything!! Carrots and such are favored as they are better for them!

Tons of prairie dogs

By rericksen |

If you want to see prairie dogs this is the place. They have a lot of burrows. When you're far away they come out. We bought some popcorn and fed them. Very cool to see if you have never seen any before.

Prairie Dog Town

By Mary P |

The prairie dogs were out in full force when we drove up but we couldn't get close enough to them to get pictures because they ran down their holes as we approached. It was fun to try though. Maybe if we had more time to sit and wait for them to come back out, we could have caught them as they came back up.

Love these little guys

By Mary B |

You have to be a nature lover to enjoy this but these little guys just crack me up...very restful to just sit and watch them scamper and play

Interesting attraction

By Transmitter77 |

If you have the time its worth a quick visit. The little guys are really hard to photograph but fun to watch. This is another free attraction in Lubbock.

Quick, fun stop

By 135Greg135 |

This is a big area full of prairie dogs that are fun to watch. Don't plan more than 10-15 minutes of entertainment, but there are a couple parks attached that pretty nice.

By KayLee P |

Tiny little place at the top of a hill near McKenzie Park not many ppl know about. You can just drive up there and get out of your car to see dozens of praise dogs running around. It's the funniest thing! There are a few "historical marker" type signs. No entrance fee or anything, it's literally on the side of a road. I don't think you are suppose to feed them but some bring little carrots to throw out their. It's mainly fun for kids to go and see it but anyone who comes to Lubbock needs to experience the little haven for Lubbock's Prairie Dogs!

Cute little critters

By CoolidgeCranko |

Peaceful. Real nature up close. There were millions at one time before humans began wanting to use the land for cattle and farming. They were virtually eliminated until people decided to protect a limited number. They are not aggressive.

good quick stop

By Rosie Luna |

Don't expect much, but its a good quick stop especially if you have children. Take food for the prairie dogs they'll love it!

Okay

By TexasTechFanatic |

Not a lot to see, but it's okay if you've never seen a prairie dog before. Good for none Texas folk honestly.

Adorable and fun to feed

By Mishlz1 |

If you like animals, this is a must do. Some of the prairie dogs are very shy and hide when you walk up. You can tell the ones who are used to humans, their mounds are close to the entrance and they are well fed. I brought carrots and they liked them. People must bring a variety of snacks, some of the prairie dogs sniffed and walked away from the carrots. Other people brought crackers and those were popular, you just can’t throw a cracker far.

dont forget carrots

By Richard L |

gotta go at least once, one of the few things out of town guests appreciate. what seems to be a nuisance for locals visitors find sweet and cute. toss a few baby carrots around and watch them scarmble

Nature's best entertainers

By cathydp464 |

You can spend all afternoon watching these little guys and never get bored. They chirp and chatter at each other and you. They love cheesy poofs, just like our 2 pet ones did. Wonderful way to spend time with small children and grandkids. And free to boot.

FREE FUN for ALL AGES!

By nwk_berlin |

This was such a fun place! No admission fees but great entertainment! I loved seeing the little guys and I think that they enjoy seeing us! Just wish my grandson were along on this trip!

We enjoy it when the place is not littered

By Chanaka S |

Its always enjoyable to see the critters and let the kids feed them. However, there was a lot of garbage strewn about including a surgical mask. Surprisingly and unfortunately, a prairie dog started chewing on it and despite our efforts, managed to gulp the entire things down. It left a bad taste in our mouth - excuse the unintended pun.

So cute!!

By eecole1303 |

If you are not from this area it’s cool to come see and just watch the babies play!! It’s free and relaxing. Bring baby carrots to feed them!!

Adorable little things!!

By Heather C |

Ok so you have to be an animal lover for this. Scenery isn’t fantastic bc it’s just fields in and around a city park that are homes to the prairie dogs. But they are ADORABLE!!! In my opinion! We went early morning when it was cooler and they were up and active for their morning feeding and before it got hot. Would do it again.

Interesting

By Doug M |

Very family friendly. There are lots of prairie dogs and you can get really close to some of them. Lots of fun

Enjoyed this Free drive up Experience

By RobynB |

My husband was like ok I’ll go with you but don’t want to. Then he jumped out of car once he realized they were right there in front of you and no hassle of tickets to get into a park etc.
such a great experience reading the history and listening to them bark and watching them prance around playing.
You won’t be disappointed if you are in the area stop by, it’s a quick visit or you can watch for as long as you want.

Prairie delight

By Erica M |

Great place to visit. The field is in bloom in flowers, birds singing. Nice gazebo for shade. Not crowded. Fun place to relax and enjoy for a bit!

Makes me Smile!

By Arla G |

This attraction has been in Lubbock for MANY years. This time I took my five year old granddaughter and I loved seeing her smile and laugh as she watched the activity of the prairie dogs.

Such An Awesome experience

By Pickle4355 |

They are so cute and it is awesome to be able to see them up close. We experience a little difficulty to locate the exact place using GPS. When we reached the Mackenzie Park, we saw water sport areas and we just drove around until we reached a couple baseball fields. Once you get to the baseball fields, you are closer and you are able to find signage to go to the Prairie Dog Town. There were some loose one wondering around outside the walled area as well, keep driving until you reach a walled area where you can park your car and get a good view of these cute creatures.

Grand kids loved it!

By lbkm |

You see prairie dogs all around town, but here you can actually see them up close and get good pictures. We did a little research on what they would eat and found that carrots were suggested so we cut up some small carrots and the kids had fun throwing them out for them to eat. It was also amusing to watch them fight over carrots! Best part is it was all free!

Fun little animals

By KG_TXtraveler |

Our son really enjoyed seeing the prairie dogs. There are several in the enclosure, but also all around as they have burrowed into the parking lot, walking trails and driving range. People bring vegetables to feed them. There isn’t any sitting space.

Cute and better yet, free

By mycohomes |

Prairie Dog Town is a fun short little visit. Nice place to bring out of town visitors for a taste of West Texas.

Loved it!

By lyndamalia |

Spent a few minutes at the park watching the little prairie dogs. Most of the closest ones ran away and hid from us, but one little guy thought he would "shout" at us to chase us away...brilliant! Really worth a look!

A Lubbock,Texas must

By JLVL |

Prairie Dog Town in a must when you are in Lubbock. It is in Mackenzie Park which is a LBB legend! When you decide to go to Prairie Dog town take lettuce with you; the prairie dogs love the water in the lettuce. They will sit on their hind legs and eat it while you watch! So fun. It is out of the way; but not that far in Lubbock and it won’t take too much time. Just go your kids will love it!

A Lubbock Must

By HubCPrairieDog |

Do you want to see prairie dogs up close? This is the place to go. It is convenient to visit. Parking is fine.

Don't expect a zoo or a major production. It is just a what it says: a prairie dog town.

Note: prairie dogs are lazy. They don't get up early. Don't expect them to be up until about an hour after sunrise.

Prarie Dog Town Fascinatingly Cute

By Guide58912783291 |

I had not seen many prairie dogs previously so this was very interesting for me. Cute little critters. It's amazing to see the layout of their "dens" - just like a house with different rooms. I understand they were a little chunkier than most prarie dogs as they are fed by visitors and not left to their own devices.

Dog Town

By Jose B |

This is a very god place to spend your time in Lubbock, Tx.; you can watch in their habitat a lot of Prairie Dogs, they are very friendly and you can get closer to them.

These Little Guys Are Everywhere!!

By Sir Cumference |

This is no little place. In the center of Mackenzie Park is the largest prairie dog town I've ever seen. These little guys are everywhere. The town is behind a two-foot tall rock wall and encompasses the same area as a softball field. Humans must stay out of the town, but be careful... they have migrated outside of the town and you'll definitely see some along the road coming in. Worth an hour or two. Bring bread or other safe food for the little fellas!!

Free entrance, bring baby carrots!

By Cassidy C. |

This place is great! Bring baby carrots! Lots of people bring all kinds of unhealthy food to feed them, but carrots are healthy, natural, and the little prairie dogs really seem to love them.
The Prairie Dog Town is in the middle of a park. Even from the park entrance, prairie dogs are everywhere. So drive carefully! No entrance fees, no time limits.
We've visited here twice. Once last year and again when we brought our family who was in town for graduation. The 10mth old in our party absolutely loved watching them, and even the adults enjoyed throwing carrots and watching the little babies.

Great Hometown Fun

By Britt B |

Many think it is silly, but as a lifelong Lubbockite, I am proud of this little place. Bring your carrots! They love carrots.

Prairie dogs---and a red fox visitor

By Badgelady |

Good sunny afternoon so we took a short drive to McKenzie park to see the prairie dogs. They were all over the place--sitting upright, crawling, barking and cavorting around. We had some crackers that we fed them (they would come up to the short wall and stand on their back legs to get the food). All at once they started a frenetic barking and scurrying into their holes. About 20 yards away a red fox trotted across their field. It may have been the human factor of our being nearby because the fox trotted off. Great afternoon spent watching these little guys who resemble fat, short legged dogs.

totally recommend

By Sarah L |

I totally recommend. Praire dogs are so cute and you get to see them very well. We even saw owls in the distance. The entrance is free and it is located in McKenzie Park.

Drive by

By javajiver |

Drive by this PDT while going to and from Idalou. Just off the Loop 289. Wonderful siteseeing! Has small and big praire dogs, just sitting on there mount.

Prairie Dogs

By E9362UYwilliamc |

Absolutely love going to watch the prairie dogs! They are so adorable to watch in their own habitat. The only thing I don't like to see is when people step OVER the wall and completely disregard the SIGNS that tell you to NOT GO OVER THE WALL!!!

Exciting even at 51

By silvestre s |

I grew up in Lubbock and can remember this place as a kid. 3rd or 4th grade we took a field trip only remembered this place after taking a joy ride seeing our old neighborhood.
This place is where you would want to take not only kids but the young at heart. Was a pleasure to see with my wife and older sister.

Great, If You Like Animals

By mikel68 |

I wasn't really excited about being dragged here. Wow, was I wrong. These little critters are everywhere. We went late afternoon, and they were out and vocal. Running here and there, jumping on each other and chasing each other. Our kids, 22 and 20, enjoyed it as well. There is a path to walk all the way around the prairie dog area if you would like. Some history of the site is posted there as well. The only sad thing about coming here...some of the parents. It's clearly posted to stay out of the attraction. There is a small maybe 2' wall enclosing the area. I've only been here this once and saw parents putting their kids in the enclosure. At one point I saw a child running in the enclosure as well. Watch you kids or don't bring them!! Otherwise if you love animals and prairie dogs you will find this pretty neat.

Prairie dog town

By jerryc0urtney |

I live in Lubbock. I grew up with known facts about these cute little rodents . In the wild they dig holes and multiply, eat the grass and strip the land of vegetation. Their holes become a hazard to cattle and horses, ( they could step in a hole and break a leg. Ranchers and farmers do not think they are cute. In the confines of the concrete area of Prairie Dog Town, they are amusing to watch and hear their yelps giving out warnings to others of humans near by If you or your children have never seen Prairie Dogs or their towns this is a great opportunity to get an up close view. Kids seam to really enjoy watching these little creatures.

Cool little spot

By Rebecca R |

The Prairie dog town is a great little (FREE) stop. There were so many of them running around. We arrived early in the morning, and they were very active. A great spot to stop for anyone.

Prairie Dog Town

By Denise P |

For fun off the beaten path head to Prairie Dog Town! It's been a Lubbock favorite for many many years. Take pictures because your friends will be surprised.

Highlight of my trip.

By Lisa K |

That was so much fun to see those critters. It was interesting to know the origin of the park. It would be an awesome place for children. Next time I'll make sure I bring some hay with me. They are adorable.

Cute!

By Kathy M |

The prairie dogs were adorable to watch for a while! It's a free attraction at the park and they are even on the golf course.

fun for all ages

By JoanHaltomCity_Texas |

Lived in Lubbock 46 years ago and had taken my children to visit many times and on one of those visits my 2 year old daughter hopped over the small stone separation what a time getting her back. Had my 7 year old great grand son with me this time, he thank goodness did not go over. he loved watching the babies running and chasing each other. I don't think it has changed since we were last there.

Good Family Fun!

By Jim S |

Some folks have said that Prairie Dog Town is great for really young kids. Well, I'm almost 70 and this free to the public park is lots of fun for old guys like me too. It's capable of bringing out the inner child in us all and put a smile on your face. Since July in Lubbock can get a bit warm, morning hours seem to be a good time to visit...at least for you and your family more than the numerous little prairie dogs. They hang out in this "town" 24/7. Remember to bring some food. Lots of families take bread but tell you the truth, small chunks of carrots work better cause they are much easier to toss towards towards the little cute guys that you are trying to feed. One family brought cherry tomatoes and they were not a big hit with the prairie dogs. But, once you chunk a morsel in their area, it's a real joy to see these little furry puppies chow down. They are cute and will entertain you and yours. You can also read educational sign boards to learn how this park got established and most important, receive a prairie Dog habitat education. Again, except for the food you are providing, this educational and entertaining experience if free to the public. The prairie dogs will be glad to see you!

Must see!

By Paul H |

My wife had always heard me tell my stories about feeding the prairie dogs marshmallows(don't judge) so we swung by there on our way out of Lubbock. It brought back many great memories.

They like grapes, cantaloupe pieces

By BWinHouston |

They don’t prefer apples or strawberries. Easy drive-up access and parking. Fun morning outing! Kids who were there enjoyed throwing food to the prairie dogs.

Fun stuff

By DiMarie421 |

We got to the park before the sun came up (to escape a horrid hotel experience!) so the prairie dogs weren't quite awake but we took a nice walk around the park and watched all of the owls until the dogs started to pop up for breakfast. They were so cute and inquisitive. Had a lot of fun and saw a beautiful sun rise.

It’s there

By Popoh |

It’s a whole bunch of prairie dogs in an closed dirt field. They were cute. Nothing to get too excited over but a solid 5 minutes of ‘ok, that was cool I guess’

Great little visit

By bstrvl55711 |

Stopped in here on the way out of town. It was like a zoo exhibit, but open in the wild. The habitat is protected (well a concrete median anyway.
Good for a quick visit (20 minutes max). Bring some carrots or other food to feed them if you like.

Nothing fancy, but don't miss it.

By Katrina305 |

Make this part of an afternoon with the kids. I took two grade school boys for an outing and this was one of the stops. The prairie dogs are fun to watch and you learn about their habitat. It doesn't take a lot of time but it was great as part of a larger adventure.

Delightfully ridiculous

By Linley J |

I recently brought some international visitors to prairie dog town. They were surprised to find what is literally a prairie full of rodents. The prairie dogs were making lots of noise, which was cute. We enjoyed hanging out for a while before we went to toss the Frisbee at McKenzie park. I'm not sure it's worth the trip (except maybe for kids) unless you're just swinging by on your way to the park.

The stuff of legend

By John B |

Some people don't believe it.

Since my dad was born and raised in Lubbock, I have been to prairie dog town dozens of times. It's always a blast. They even have little burrowing owls in the holes with them. We played golf last week and it's right next to the fairway ... brilliant.

Oh so cute!

By Roxanne M B |

Cute small attraction. Many, many Prairie dogs to see. Next to a driving range in Mackenzie Park. Signs tell about the history of the park. There is a roof over an area for shade. Good to visit when it's sunny and hot. The people there threw out dog food for the Prairie dogs and they all came running. Adorable.

So cute

By Tom B |

Easy to find in Lubbock. Glad we made the effort to visit Prairie Dog Town. Lots of little babies around , learning to be big and smart. Stayed for some time just watching their antics, couldn't believe how few visitors there were, needs more publicity - free, so go visit.

Prairie Dog Town is my son's favorite

By TreasuredPearls |

Great Aunt, and my 16 year old loved Prairie Town. We all loved it. It's a low stone fence surrounding the prairie dogs. He loved it. It is pretty hot and has a little shade. There are little critters everywhere, even outside the fence. The ones in the fence are a little tamer and if you happen to have food, they will come up close and personal to get free food. Please bring enough because they will fight over it. It's fun to see, but i recommend a cloudy cool day. The sunny day in September was pretty hot and can get uncomfortable quicly.

Fun time

By Ginger405 |

Great day to spend with children and out of town family the town of lubbock had so much for my out of state family to see we even went to Joy land

Great

By April P |

So cool to see the prairie dogs up close Grandson loved it Easy to find Not crowded so you could take your time and enjoy the animals

Precious!!!

By CathyP1953 |

These critters were so much fun to watch. We drove around the circle and saw an entire family of prairie dogs coming out of their hole. We watched the cuties scamper around the area for several minutes. We enjoyed our visit to this attraction in Amarillo. Kids would love this site!!!

Cute Little Buggers

By LCMMHA |

We had a hard time finding the park but once there, we found those little prairie dogs everywhere. It is a large space, fenced...to keep people out, not to keep the little buggers in!
People were feeding them bread, but we brought carrots. Cute how they grab the food and sit up and eat.
There is a sign with info about the town and how and why it began. The park where it is located is very nice with picnic areas and hiking trails.

Little prairie dogs playing hide and seek

By Diana W |

I have never seen prairie dogs outside of a zoo. This was cool seeing them in their natural environment.
We took baby carrots to feed them. The ones in the main part don’t come up & eat out of your hands, but a few have dug out and run around the park. Those will come up to you if you stay very still.

Precious little prairie dog families. Little babies running around and playing. My little 4 yr old niece loved it & said the babies were playing hide & seek. 😀

Highly recommend seeing this.

Great for kiddos!

By Karen N |

My grandmother has taken her grandkids here since the 60's. We would stop at the Mrs. Baird's Bakery Store to have bread to toss out to the little p-dogs. Pretty sure there is no longer a store at Mrs. Baird's . . . but there are several day-old places to stop and grab a loaf!

Cute fun short trip

By Becky S |

Stopped there for a few minutes to check it out! Lots of prairie dogs all very cute! The park is nice and clean. Just remember to bring veggies or something prairie dog friendly to feed them to really interact with them!

Overhyped

By JosePflybyguide |

This place is very strange to me. It's a blocked in field with prairie dogs running around the place, IF you are lucky. It's a little overrated but to each their own. It might be okay to take kids and fan lovers of prairie dogs to get out of the house.

A cute and fun way to spend 15 minutes

By Tim H |

Once you find it and feed the prairie dogs, you'll realize that that is it. You're done, They are cute and fun and make those adorable sounds, but they are kinda picky about what they eat. 15 minute stop tops.

Gotta See It!

By starrynight2015 |

I had heard about Prairie Dog Town for years, and had to see it. Great experience and good to witness the saving of these animals and the conservation efforts that started in the 1930s.

small children like to go here

By littlered4435 |

I remember going to Prairie Dog Town when I was a small child years and years ago.like the 1940's. it hasn't changed much in all these years. We used to take bread and feed the prairie dogs. It is impossible to contain them so they are all around the enclosure. Good trip to feed them and then go feed the ducks in the park.

Super Cool Up Close Viewing

By Meso R |

Very Unusual, really cool up close and personal view of these little creatures. They really seem to ignore the people and just go about their business, makes for great photo op. Spent about 30 min observing - quite amazing to see. Sort of a been there done that type of thing.

Free fun for all ages

By ChowHound2015 |

What a fun place. These little critters are so cute! If you're in Lubbock set aside about 30 minutes to come and see this place. No rules against feeding and they seem to prefer baby carrots over bread and crackers.

A free attraction that is good....

By Marwal |

We were in the area and though we would pop and see the attraction, finding it was a little tricky, but that was as our gps took us too far along the road and we ended up at the golf course, so FYI, if you get there, go back to the ball park and turn off there.

Plenty parking, just get out and go straight up to the wall, there is plenty prairie dogs to see. Most of them are 'tame' and so are almost right up to the wall. Take your camera and you are almost guaranteed to get a few great shots.

Free fun in the sun for all the family.

So cute!

By Jennifer N |

The prairie dogs are so adorable! Too bad that they get scared easily and make the cute chirping noises and then go back in their holes. Would love to have seen more of them but it's a great place to see them.

Cute as heck

By Trevi36 |

This has a long and interesting history. We’ve taken numerous visitors there and they all enjoy it. Go when it’s cool outside. Prairie Dogs are smart, they stay underground when it’s hot.

A quick trip from town and a great visit for young and old alike.

By emmett56003 |

The prairie dogs are everywhere and they are not shy. Kids love it, and so do the adults. Just a short ride from town.

Prairie Dogs

By William A |

Bring your camera and enjoy your time with these funny little guys. We sat and watched them for about an hour. Each one of them have their own personalities and are really funny. These fat little barkers run from hole to hole and bark at everything. Bring binoculars and a good camera and enjoy.

Fun to visit

By Belinda C |

This was a fun side trip we added in Lubbock. It is great to see this type of urban wildlife preservation. It has a pretty large colony of prairie dogs to watch.

Adorable!

By 2RovingWanderers |

Lots of fun, and the prairie dogs are adorable! If visiting in cold weather, you'll want to go in the afternoon when the sun is out, and the day has warmed.

Take 15 minutes to see them, then done.

By Scott M |

Sure the little doggies are cute. Take 15 minutes out of your trip to take a look. 15 minutes may be too long. They pop up, skitter about, eat a plant. Cute. Watch out for the fire ants where you are walking!
