The R.W. Norton Art Gallery houses an exceptional collection of art spanning more than four millennia. Since its opening in 1966, the museum has become particularly well-known around the country for its impressive collections of works by those titans of western art, Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. The R.W. Norton Art Gallery is a teaching museum that uses the art to encourage community participation in thoughtful interpretations and discussions.
In the early 1920's, Richard W. Norton (1886-1940) became one of the discoverers of the Rodessa Oil Field in north Louisiana. Over time, Mr. Norton's wife and son began to amass a significant collection of fine art. In 1946, to honor Mr. Norton and for the benefit of the community, Richard W. Norton, Jr. (1919-1974) and his mother, Mrs. Richard W. Norton (1886-1975) created the R.W. Norton Art Foundation. In turn, the Foundation eventually established the R.W. Norton Art Gallery, basing its initial collection upon donations from the acquisitions of the Nortons. Today, due to the on-going efforts of the Board of Control and the Foundation's work, the R.W. Norton Art Gallery's offerings continue to expand, grow, and contribute to their community.

Lived here most of my life and only been here twice. This is truly a hidden gem! So many beautiful paintings and so very beautiful walking paths especially in the spring when the flowers are in bloom. This "gem" cannot all be seen in a few minutes. It takes several hours to take it all in. You won`t be disappointed!

I love this museum. I've been going since i was very young, but i won't go back. In a remodel done a couple of years ago, collections were broken up and placed randomly around the museum, rather than with similar pieces. Example- No more rooms dedicated to Remington and Russell. Their works are scattered throughout the museum. But the worst are the pastel walls done in faux paint styles. To see world class art on mint and pink walls is a shame, more tailored to Hello Kitty than French impressionist.

We had never been to this museum in all the years we have visited. It was a very enjoyable morning. We spent about two hours there and felt like we had rushed through it. There is so much to see and enjoy. We think it well worth the time and plan to visit again. They staff is friendly and informative. They willingly share information when you ask questions.
If you are a fan of Fredrick Remington and Charles M Russell this is the place for you. We are fans of both.

I didn't know admission was free to this art museum and the botanical gardens until we arrived and were greeted by the friendly gentleman at the reception desk, and it's certainly something I would pay to see. (Note: Photography is prohibited both indoors and out.)
The museum's interior design is excellent with various wall colors and textures, intricate floor tile designs, vinyl lettering quotes on the walls, and interesting historical art and collectibles beautifully displayed. I was fortunate to get to take my time, read lots of information, and really soak in what the art galleries had to offer.
Because of extreme heat outdoors, we did not tour the gardens; I have read several praising accounts, and I hope someday I can return during a cooler time of year to see them. I highly recommend this museum if you appreciate fine art, and there are exhibits right now with post-modern art--- thought-provoking photography. We really enjoyed it all!

We went to Norton’s while all of the family was in town kids from 2 all the up to 80. It was a great family friendly place. The exhibits were amazing and the grounds are beautiful even in the winter. A great time was had by all. Now we are awaiting the azealas to bloom.

The art gallery is filled with a wide variety of art, but I wasn't really impressed. As I walked from room to room, I kept trying to figure out why art was placed where it was. It didn't seem to relate to historical eras, styles or types of art or anything that would cause pieces in a room to have something in common.
The highlight was the children's section where there were some fun, whimsical pieces depicting fairy tales. It was disappointing, however, that this art wasn't labeled so we didn't know who created it or, if you weren't familiar with the stories, might not even know what story it represented.
The gardens were delightful -- numerous paths led through beautiful garden areas with many of the plants labeled. We were just a bit too late to see the plentiful azaleas in bloom, but I can imagine it's spectacular.

This museum is a gem. If you have enjoyed any museums in other cities, I guarantee you will enjoy this one. It has a wide variety of artworks and the like and is laid out great. It will take one to two hours to see it all. And THEN you have the gardens it is most famous for (we missed them due to timing issues).

A nice average size gallery. General and Locality themed exhibits as well as a kids area. We enjoyed it a great deal.

They have a spacious Art Museum. Nice lithography, canvas. They also have Live beehive boxes to view.

The inside of the museum is very nice and has some impressive works of art, but it isn't child friendly - although they do hold mommy and me yoga some mornings and other child friendly events through the year. The best part in my opinion is the large beautiful park behind it with winding paths, creeks, ponds and amazing trees, plants, and sculptures. A great place to take kids to run around - it's nice and shaded in many spots, so it is great in the summer time and all year round. In April/May the azaleas and hydrangeas are a must see.

One of the best Art Galleries I've seen.
They also have a great collection of Remington sculptures. It's no cost...just enjoy. First time I went it was a bit overwhelming. A lot of great artists are featured. I've been back 3 times.

I really didn't know what to expect when I visited the R. W. Norton Art Gallery in Shreveport, Louisiana recently. What I was delighted and thrilled to find that this museum has a permanent collection of over 8,000 works of fine art. and is quite extensive.
I was particularly interested in their American Collection which contains outstanding examples from the Hudson River School and the major American "Western" artists, Frederic Remington and Charles Marion Russell. The museum has several of Remington's famous bronze sculptures including The Bronco Buster and Coming Through the Rye. Among his paintings at the museum are Coming to the Rodeo and Twilight of the Indian. And, in fact, it is considered that the Norton Art Gallery has one of the finest collections of Frederick Remington's works in America!
As an ex-New Yorker, I was especially surprised to find that they had the Forever Marilyn Sculpture by J. Seward Johnson, Jr. which is based on the scene from her film, "The Seven Year Itch" where she stands over a NYC subway grate as the subway passes by so she could cool off on a hot summer day!
I didn't have a chance to visit the the Gardens which is set among 43 beautifully landscaped acres. I plan on visiting again in the Spring when the azalea gardens should be in full bloom. The Norton Gardens also include several outdoor sculptures by the artists Sandy Scott, Kent Ullberg, A.A. Weinman, Gary Price, Bart Walter and Guiseppe Benelli.

Great place to spend time seeing and learning new things. Really enjoyed our visit. Highly recommended

The Norton Gallery was a pleasant surprise. Admission is free, and the gallery is more of a museum/gallery combination. Very well maintained and professionally managed. This gallery is huge and full of various works of art, sculptures, artifacts, and more. Each has its own story. They even have two original Rembrandt etchings! It was such a nice break, and I can't wait to go back!

Great collection of variety of paintings and statuary. They have a number of Remington's. Lovely gardens, especially in the Spring, located in a quiet residential neighborhood just off a Main Street. It's all free.

A wonderful art collection with emphasis given to western art. Generally they have a seasonal special focus . The museum has been especially active in attracting neighborhood interest with outside movies and special events. The grounds are always a seasonal treat, fall, winter, spring and summer. Don't miss this gem!

What an amazing time I had on a date here at the Art Gallery. Don't let the name try and turn you away. The paintings and figures are absolutely stunning. Out back in the yard the beautiful flowers and the pond at the bottom make it for an amazing date to take your significant other on.
I will definitely be back and will tell ALL my friends about this place. Highly recommend for couples and even families with small children. This is a great learning experience as well as a great outing.

We spent an afternoon in the gallery and walking along the pathways on the beautiful grounds. We were extremely impressed by both. We were amazed there was no admission to such fine art exhibits. I was surprised my husband spent more time in the doll collection area than the gun collection! Very well done and such a variety of creativity. So glad we took the time to visit.

This place has some really cool items to see. Some of the items are items you don't see very often because of their age. This place is great to visit because of the grounds surrounding it has beautiful flowers.

Beautiful grounds, breath taking exhibits. Do not miss this gem. A real art and history experience. Both Louisiana and American history.

There is a wealth of great art in this free gallery, including Remington and Marion Russell paintings and sculptures of the old west, and European art. The grounds are great to walk in too,

Love this place. Perfect for our father/daughter date. We had a blast at art exhibit and taking pics. The museum is so grand.

This is a wonderful museum of American and European art. The adjoining gardens are also a real treat and blessing for all to enjoy! While there are no entrance fees, donations are excepted and appreciated. The museum and gardens hours have differences so best to check website for more information if possible.

Spent about two hours. Easy parking and no fee. It was very convenient to our B&B. The gardens behind the Gallery looked nice but the weather was not cooperating.

Besides the exquisite and exotic art collection, the museum offers free educational tours and quite a delightful garden with long paths and bubbling brooks. The doll room intrigued my female students (I'm a middle school teacher), and almost all of the boys were enamored with the gun collection.

easy and nice place for a walk of the gardens and enjoying the art and conversation. Nortons have been long term residents of the area. I like the gardens more than the

Didn't expect this at all, especially in Shreveport!! Must see. Make sure you have a couple hours. There are all kinds of things to see. Great works by Remington and others. There are plenty of paintings and sculptures as well as firearms and dolls and photography. It's a hodgepodge of different eras nicely laid out. This is a great thing to do if the weather isn't cooperating or you're tired of the casinos.

I'll just keep it short and sweet. Free. Very interesting art exhibits and the building itself qualifies as art too.

We have been to this museum several times since learning about it from a friend--this after having lived in Shreveport for a short time and having visited there often since!
What a delightful surprise it was, and IS, every time we visit. Mr. Norton was a prolific
collector of all sorts of interesting artifacts and artworks. My husband particularly enjoys the weapons section, while I love the dolls, many of them antiques. I daresay anyone could find something to like in this museum, to which admission is free. Do go there the next time you are in the Shreveport/Bossier area; you won't regret it.

I can believe they don't charge for this. It was filled with eye candy! Oils, sculptures, prints, dolls, and guns... Beautiful landscape paintings. I actually felt hot in front of one painting of a temperature guage set at 102 degrees then a shade tree in the next pic to cool off under. Worth the trip. I promise who ever you are what ever the age

Stopped here at 4:00 pm on our way east on I-20 since it was rated so well on trip advisor.
There were guards everywhere! We were told it closed at 5:00, so we tried to hurry through and see a lot. We would have made it, but they started closing at 4:45 and were ushered out.
What we did see was wonderful! The rare books room had an elephant page original Audubon book, which the attendant said was the most important book in the collection.
We enjoyed many Russell and Remington pieces, a Mary Cassat, and of course, much more.
There were staff members everywhere watching people and I guess, making sure no one took pictures.
After exiting the building, we went out back where we were the only people touring the gorgeous gardens. Those were the biggest azaleas I have ever seen, although not in bloom.
Really, our only disappointment was that no photos can be taken anywhere on property.
So, stop in if you are ever in Shreveport. Two hours would be a good amount of time to spend at this lovely.free museum.

I am a bit spoiled as I have the special pleasure of being able to walk to Norton any time I want. What impresses me the most is the absolutely gorgeous gardens that surround the Art Gallery/Museum. This is a great place to visit or bring out of town guest and is great for locals to walk their dogs, ride your bike or walk/jog around the property. You will be in awe with the nature surrounding you.

Excellent art gallery with a little bit for every taste! Also a great garden, especially in spring when the azaleas are blooming. The gallery has a list of everything you can imagine. You turn a corner and there is another unexpected exhibit. They also offer tours. Give them a call. It's a wonderful place to be on a rainy day or in the heat of the summer.... really, any time of the year!

unbelievable place with rich fine art..
Marylin Monroe statue is real hitpaintings are from all over the world: from Warhol to Netherland school painters... impressionism...
Even the building itself is a classic.
Not to mention the parc behind it... one word: peacefull and beautiful...
Remy from France

My husband and I traveled to Shreveport for the casino but we always check out what the city has to offer. This was a delightful find. The museum is open and spacious, not crowded like some and offers a diversity of art. The landsccaping is lovely and a beautiful garden. What not to like?

The artwork and history that you can find here exceeds anything that I've seen anywhere.
Remington Collection is just gorgeous and near the entrance is a bell that Paul revere created for a church in Maine. The building is beautiful and the exhibits are equally well done.
A must see if you're3 aqnywhere near Shreveport.

Had a lovely visit to this gem of a gallery. The art collection was varied and nicely curated. Loved the quotes along the walls that unified the collections and the information posted by each work that often contained unique facts making a more personal connection with the artist. Definitely worth a visit!

Having grown up in Shreveport ( in the 60's and 70's) I visited Norton's as a child. I drive past it daily, and decided to pop in. WOW! I never realized there were such treasures right in my own home town!
Worth more than one visit- you could do paintings one day, sculpture another, silver and porcelain the next...
And I haven't even mentioned the amazing gardens, with their changing colors throughout the year.
Visitor or resident...GO!!!

My friend, Nancy, and I spent a rainy morning in the gardens at Norton Art Gallery. We never actually went into the building but the gardens are lovely. Best of all, many of the plants have plaques with their names on them. It makes all the difference to be able to identify the plants. The layout is wonderful (although a little slippery in the rain) -- you go up and down hills and valleys with water features everywhere. It has a great selection of different plants in different climates. Best free tour you can take in Shreveport.

We kind of knew that the R. W. Norton Museum would not be open since it was a Monday. However, we were able to enjoy the beautiful gardens with their shaded garden trails and wide variety of plants. Since the gardens are so serene and beautiful, we were able to take a brief respite from all of our daily travels. It is a beautiful place of tranquility in such a large city.
Travelers Tip: The gardens are open during most of the day whether the Norton Museum is open or not.

Great visit, nice staff, lots and lots of top top works to view. Many western heritage items including Russell and Remington, Moran and Bierstadt, and many others. thanks to curator and all staff!

A tremendous gift of the Norton family, the Norton is entirely free. The museum has numerous exhibits. There is a large collection of Remington sculptures of the Old West. One exhibit room is filled with old dolls, while another holds an old firearms collection. Artwork of all types are abundant. Seasonal displays include an ornately decorated Christmas Tree. The grounds of the Norton span 40 acres of walking paths and displays waterfalls, ponds, flowers and plants of every variety. There are 7 outstanding bronze sculptures interspersed along the pathways. It may take several trips through the garden before you find them all.

Lovely art musum tucked within Shreveport. The collections are well selected and kept. A true fine. Beautiful grounds and building and exhibits.

I'm a local who visits the Norton Art Gallery often. The grounds are stunning with blooming azalea bushes in the spring. Enjoy a peaceful walk any time of year. My husband proposed to me on one of our walks 25 years ago :) The gallery will not disappoint. My favorite portion as a child was the tapestry room. My husband enjoys the antique gun gallery.

Wonderful and worth a visit every month, which is what I do since I live in Shreveport. The grounds are also beautiful and the landscape changes throughout the seasons. They also have nice touring exhibits. Thank you the Norton Family!

The R.W. Norton Art Gallery and Museum in Shreveport, La. remains the top attraction in a city that offers so much for the visitor. The water walks and falls are complete now and there are so many of them, some hidden behind plants and demand attention with their bubbling sounds.
The Winter plants are mysterious to our hometown garden ways in the
South and are carefully tended and often contain a name tag for identify.
Photos are not allowed in the outdoor garden walk area which seemed rather strange to me as memories to take home are part of the charm.
Inside, it is too much to describe here. You must go and observe. Old Masters, American History and portraits, fabulous tapestries that most have never seen anything like before. Touring exhibits offer a look into the world of the world famous artists and art pieces. I am constantly delighted each time I go. I love the Norton and those that present it.

Wonderful place in Shreveport. A true gem. In spring a 10-15 acre azalea garden is a showstopper for the community. Inside are collections of art-one of 2 Audubon art collections. An impressive gun collection. Make this a spring trip around Easter time you will remember. All is free.

I have to use 100 words to get my review accepted but words can't describe this place. First of all let's talk about cost to enter this fine art museum. There is none, it is completely free, not a penny. No donation boxes or membership applications either! This is a very big building and there is art of every description from end to end. And then there's the beautiful grounds complete with waterfalls, pools, turtles and goldfish! All this tucked quietly away in a beautiful old neighborhood with manicured lawns. It may be a little hard to find but is definitely worth it! The only drawback is you can not take any photographs inside or out, but you will leave with some beautiful memories!

This is a lovely, elegant museum, but the real draw is the enormous outdoor park that surrounds it. Tucked into a quiet neighborhood, this hilly scenic park is lush with varietal plants and walking trails, fountains, quiet spots to sit on a bench or picnic....best time of year is March - April when the azaleas are in bloom

Norton Art Gallery is a place of enjoyment for all ages. It is absolutely amazing for Shreveport to be blessed with such beauty, elegance and hospitality. This gallery and the people who own it touch the hearts and souls of many.
Thank you for your contribution to this region.

The museum was pretty but not great for kids young or old. It was free so we thought why not. We didn't expect our kids to love it but we thought we'd find a few more things they'd like to see there and we heard there was an outside area. We felt like we had to be quiet even outside. I bet it's very pretty when there is more blooming.
There was a room of dolls, but even that wasn't a huge hit. This is a place for people who like peace and quiet and felt like a library. It even kind of looked like one. It didn't feel like a place you could learn or teach if you had to talk to do so. Reading only, which isn't how everyone learns things. I don't think they usually have a lot of kids here and most art museums we've visited have a kid area and even if they aren't noisy there is at least some noise happening. It was not crowded at all. I think we saw one middle aged couple. Even if it was just adults only, I think we'd have been afraid to whisper too loudly. It guess it is hard to explain unless you experience it.
There was a lot of western art which isn't my favorite but I liked that it was different than what I usually see. I guess that's what they mean when they say art appreciation.
the vibe overall was weird - really really really nice in some places and downright weird decorating choices in others. Like an identity crisis. They had sponge painted walls from the 90s. The quotes all over the walls were cheesy. The outer parts of the building and the floors had an upscale 60s and 70s feel but it was very nice. Like they had lots of money nice. There actually was a library in there and it was rich wood and leathery feeling.
The neighborhood it was in was the prettiest part. We had more fun driving around it. Lots of historic bungalows mixed with big older homes. We drove past a park right near here and stopped on impulse to swing and run around.

This Art Gallery was phenomenal in every way. I would rate it equal to most any gallery, even the ones in Houston. Collections of all types of Art were on display from all over! The museum is huge and cant be seen all in one day. We will return. The grounds are huge and beautiful and we walked around some, but honestly too much eye candy both inside and out and begs for another visit. It was truly amazing!. Shreveport and all it has to offer is a hidden gem!

this place was given to the public bye mr Norton a very wealthy man back when Shreveport was new i grow up there , if you like art you got to go, great for taking pics

Especially enjoy the art work of the American west, Remington bronzes in particular. Gallery is not too large to enjoy in an afternoon. I try to go to the gardens when the azaleas are in bloom, impressive. Gardens are great for children, the Gallery better for older children. Excellent photo ops.

I walk here in the mornings. It's like you are walking through an enchanted forest. So lovely to see the flowers blooming, ducks, chickens, different gardens. What a gem.

Norton Art Gallery is the most incredible museum. I live close by and go often. I do what I can to spread the word. The "Old West" masters for the guys who love that history, children's section which is so educational, and of course, the incredible collections of art and pottery covering every genre of art. An amazing "must do" when you are in Shreveport.

My wife and daughter go there on a regular basis to see their flowers as well as art. Spring there is amazing and they circulate artwork often, but not too often to see favorites a time or two!
My daughter (now 4) loves the flowers and there are some areas for her to play while my wife and I enjoy the art.

This is a world class museum with a variety of displays. The grounds are spectacular in the spring..

Welcome you to Shreveport, Louisiana, the third major city in the state, located in NW Louisiana. If you're visiting the town for the very first time, besides other attractions (not that many), casinos, restaurants, you should dedicate a bit of time to visit RW Norton Art Gallery. The very first impression looking the building from outside is not that "welcome", but the surrounding mini park with blooming flowers suddenly will change your mind. And the cozy part of exhibition begin once you walk inside. The private collection of arts, paintings, typical southern comfort will grab you immediately and will hold you in each expo hall you walk trough. It will tell you about the history of the area, town, state, the South. I hope you will enjoy your tour and time as I did every single time I visit this unique cultural spot in town. Feel the warmth of Southern hospitality.

My granddaughters live in the Shreveport area. When we come to visit one of their favorite activities is the Norton Art Gallery. The quality of the art collection is amazing for this area. My granddaughters love looking at each piece and discussing with their grandma what was happening in the painting. They also love walking through the beautiful gardens. I highly recommend visiting Norton Art Gallery if you are in the Shreveport area. It is amazing, peaceful, and best of all it is free.

From exquisitely decorated ancient and modern weapons, Remington and Winchester and Escher art, an elephant edition of birds from early American Western exploration, ancient Roman and Greek statues and vessels, modern art, early Delta river-based American culture, and MUCH more, very well displayed. All this, set in beautifully landscaped Louisiana gardens that surround the modern facility. We’re on our 4th or 5th visit, and will return.

The grounds of the gallery have a walking trail along with various water features. Statues of animals can be found along the trail. Beautiful way to spend an evening.

The place thinks a little more highly of itself than it should. You can't even take photo's with your family on the grounds. Really? This is supposed to be a tourist attraction and I can't take pictures of my family to remember it? Way to go Norton! I could understand about not taking photos of the artwork. No problem. But outside on the grounds while sitting on a bench???? C'mon. A little excessive dont ya think? Doi you really believe this place is so beautiful or important that someone would want to copy it or what? Guess the flash will kill the azalea's. It's just ridiculous. Snobby, uppity, anal, and pretentious. This place isn't all that. Problem is the whole city acts like it's the upper class of London and it's the gutter oil of most third world countries. Best exhibit it ever had was Ansel Adams' work and it's long gone. Dont stop too long in one place and look at the burnt and dying shrubbery or you'll get run off. Used to be a nice and enjoyable place but not anymore. Theres a reason the place is always dead and they just dont get it....

Beautiful, well kept grounds and a no admission fee art gallery with something for all ages. a portion of the gallery is dedicated to traveling exhibits

The R. W. Norton is a wonderful museum tucked away in Shreveport. The galleries inside the museum are wonderful, there is much to look at! The gardens are gorgeous! Plus, it is free to visit the Norton! The have various events throughout the year; the ones I have attended have been fun and well done. The Norton is a great place for locals and visitors!

Very interesting and educational. So many types of collections and beautiful art work. It was raining so we didn't get to visit the gardens. I can't wait to take my grandchildren there.

Large variety of art here. Audubon books are a great attraction. Traveling exhibitions. After art viewing walk the gardens. Very colorful with seasonal blooms...

We planned a trip to Shreveport just to visit the gallery. This is a world class treasure for Shreveport. We spent about an hour strolling the gardens and admiring the plants and statues. This is itself is worth a visit. The docents in the gallery were so friendly and helpful. What wonderful memories. This is definitely worth a visit.

I love this spot. Its beautiful. Not only do they have an amazing art exhibit, bur thy also have the most beautiful gardens and walk ways behind it. Went to this place for field trips when i was young.

Eclectic paintings and sculptures that held my interest. The gardens and landscaping were made for a fun walk with plenty to see. Peaceful. Lots of benches for sitting and watching.

Had such an exciting night. The art work was very interesting, food was great & the Vaudeville act was just precious! The night couldn't have been any better & everyone's costumes were amazing!

Just a walk around the grounds is relaxing but especially in the spring when the 100s of azalea bushes are in bloom. The gallery always features first class works.

When I decided to spend a cold and rainy day in a “small” local art gallery, I definitely did not imagine how much I would enjoy the experience. The permanent collection is great, I had the rare opportunity of going into the fantastic library, such a treat. The staff is so friendly and willing to answer all your questions, I really appreciated that. Being from Mexico, I was surprised to find quite a few pieces from my country and Latin America. The temporary exhibit of the work by the local Holy Angels foundation is so heartwarming. Overall, I’m so glad I visited And highly recommend it!

We've been here a number of times but always try to catch the various traveling exhibits. The permanent collection includes paintings by a number of famous artists, doll and gun exhibits, and quite a few western sculptures and artwork by Remington. The grounds are quite beautiful with a large number of different species of plants and flowers, really gorgeous this time of year. And it's FREE!

Decided to visit the gallery to see some of my favorites by Remington, Russell, and Peter Ellenshaw. What a fortuitous time to stop by The Norton.
I was greeted by staff, and learned that in about forty five minutes, the gallery would present Broadway Christmas, with music by the Shreveport Little Theatre Academy. I decided to grab a seat, and soon enjoyed an amazing experience. The vocalists were incredibly talented, and brought Christmas spirit to all in attendance.
Later, I enjoyed the exhibits that were the original purpose of my visit. There is something for everyone from dolls, to guns, and it is free.
On leaving, I had another surprise. Some of the azaleas in the gardens were in full bloom. Although this may somewhat lessen the spring show, I took these beautiful flowers as another Christmas surprise from the R. W. Norton Art Gallery.

I have lived in Shreveport all my life and only recently visited the Norton. I cannot believe more people who live in the area and who visit the area do not make this a priority. The Norton has a wonderful collection of fine art and sculpture, and one should make sure to tour the gardens on the property when visiting.

Amazing art collection - both American and European masters on show. We were particularly impressed by the number of works by C.M.Russell and Frederick Remington here in the deep South. We spent a very enjoyable couple of hours here on a rainy morning.

It's a peaceful, amazing place to visit full of beauty, interesting items to look at and just plain relaxing.

DH and I were in Shreveport for two nights. We had no plans to visit the R.W. Norton Art Gallery, but TA reviews piqued our interest.
This place is amazing. Considering there is no entrance fee - wow, just wow. The place is huge. Wear comfortable shoes. We did not make it all around the beautiful grounds. The azaleas were finished blooming - place was still gorgeous.
We lucked into watching beekeepers working on hives outside one of the gallery windows. That was as close as either of us had ever been to seeing such work. That in itself was amazing.
Employees were friendly and eager to answer any questions.

The mask rule was reinstated. This is unnecessary and ruins the gallery experience. The docents are quick to chastise you if the paper mask, which doesn’t protect you, is not properly worn. We won’t return and wouldn’t recommend anyone go until the useless mask requirement is removed. It is not worth ruining the beauty of the art. People socially distance inside and most of us are vaccinated several times. Stop ruining the love of art for your neurosis.

We spent a very enjoyable afternoon admiring the art, sculptures, extensive gun collections - and especially the dolls that were dressed in Period dress with a detailed explanation of the time frame. In the Spring, Azaleas are blooming and brides take pictures using them for a backdrop

Beautiful museum. Quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Well maintained and staffed. My husband and I Enjoyed our visit and will definitely go back again.

Nice collections of various art. Impressive firearms collection as well. Nicely displayed. Helpful and friendly docents. Beautiful grounds. A Shreveport treasure that is a must see.

We were traveling through Shreveport and noted that this was a free museum. We had low expectations, but guess what. This museum truly blew away our minds. It had great art work and truly well maintained. It is a not to miss place if you have couple of hours

Very well taken care of and such a beautiful place to see. Tons of art! Staff is very informative if asked any questions.

One of the best ways to spend some time. Beautiful landscapes all around the building with a vast array of Azaleas. The museum is fantastic with much art, sculpture and changing exhibits. Do not miss this treasure!

This is a nice place to spend an afternoon. The standard art collection is beautiful, especially one painting of the Himalayas. They also have nice temporary exhibits. The gardens are also real nice to walk around in. In April, the azaleas bloom and steal the show. Photography is not permitted in the museum or in the gardens.

Norton's Art Gallery and Grounds used to hold a warm spot in my heart. Luke warm at best now. A few years ago some ---hole left graffiti on a wall and now Mrs. Norton tries to keep people from taking a picture of a tree or the sky. Last spring I witnessed her use a private off duty Sheriff deputy to tell 8 mother's and their freshmen daughters they could not take pictures of the girls while standing on a public street with Norton's azalea's in the background. I kid you not! I wonder if it was tax payer $$$ paying for the gas, insurance and car! The Gallery, grounds and Mr. Norton are lovely and worthy of visiting. He is a kind and gracious man.

In my opinion, this is a slightly pretentious and somewhat overbearing art gallery with a varied collection in a pleasing building and with beautiful grounds.
I visited the R W Norton Gallery on a hot June afternoon. The building is surprisingly large for its neighbourhood and rather imposing. It could pass for a war memorial or even a crematorium in Europe! There are signs posted on the railings around the grounds saying that photography is not permitted, but photography IS permitted in the grounds, just not inside the gallery.
When I went inside I was greeted by vigorous air conditioning and an attentive volunteer, who asked me to ensure my mobile phone was either switched off or in flight mode, and to keep it safely in my bag because no photography is permitted.
I spent about an hour in the gallery and saw no other visitors. The building itself is quite interesting and the place was gleaming. I doubt anyone else had used the women's rest room all that day. Much of the permanent collection is not to my taste, but that's no criticism of the gallery. It's well hung and well lit.
There was a large room devoted to a temporary exhibition of large black-and-white photographic prints. They were portraits of people bearing tattoos and many of the subjects were from Shreveport. I enjoyed the photo exhibition and read the huge wall of context in the room. There was even a quote from the photographer. But I couldn't find the photographer's name anywhere. And nor could the nearby volunteers. Nor the lady managing the front desk. Luckily another visitor was able to enlighten me; his name is Hunter Sloan.
I spent longer walking around the extensive and often shady grounds. The brick paths are immaculate, the flowerbeds, lawns, bridges, features are beautifully tended. The gardens cover a small valley with water flowing through and benches dotted here and there. It's very pretty and a delightful place to take a walk. I did see two other visitors in the gardens, plus quite a few gardening staff.
Both the gallery and the grounds are free to enter.

One night a year, Norton Art Gallery hosts a Night at the Museum, wherein local actors dress up as historical characters and play their parts. We get to experience icons like Marilyn Monroe, Faust, Sakagwea, Captain Henry Shreve, and lots more. Of course, some are better than others - I can assure you that "Marilyn" REALLY gets into her role, and Captain Shreve is extremely knowledgeable and instructive.
The grounds are open for picnicking; food trucks have available food, or you can pack your own. At a certain time, the museum shows a movie outdoors, projected onto a large screen. Fun times! We've done it 2 years in a row, and plan to continue.
Oh, and did I mention that it is FREE? Not only do you get to experience real-life historical characters, but also you can enjoy the art that is always on display. It makes a Friday night tons of fun, for not a lot of dough! We went as a couple, but there are lots of families experiencing it, as well. If you go, plan to get there early, as they close their doors half an hour before the end.

The Gardens around the buildings are spectacular and large with a creek and many walkways. The art is varied and excellent and very creatively displayed. Staff is accommodating.

I really enjoyed this art gallery. There were some very old paintings that were beautiful. it is amazing to me that a painting can be over 100 years old and still look like it was painted recently. It was free, no cost, which was nice for the gallery and the gardens. We looked at all the paintings, and then we walked around the gardens outside. it was perfect weather so we walked a pretty good ways. There was a brook that had water flowing in it. and the trees and plants, t was really something to see if you enjoy that kind of thing.

We loved this gallery and grounds. The artwork was wonderful. We were lucky to see school children being taught an appreciation for art. The kids truly seemed interested and engaged. The grounds were extraordinary and in full bloom. Could not have been more pleased with our visit.

Maybe I’m crazy ...well, yes but still ...I can’t help loving things that have “death” as a risk factor. Norton Art Gallery IS NOT one of them, believe dat!!! However, (comma) this place is nice, the campus is nice, and they even have scavenger hunt sheets for children of various ages. Plus, it’s free admission. I mean, good thing because I wouldn’t have paid to some art gallery up front. This place is nice though, the staff is great. There are paintings there from people I know personally, so that was neat to see. I used to be big into art as a kid, but it didn’t have “the thrill” that my heart longs for. However, (Cooommmaa)I can always appreciate the work and effort that has been put into such beautiful things. Like the landscaping and garden out back, high-five ghost is on the scene to whoever did that. Very nice and makes for a great stroll. As crazy active as I am, I enjoyed taking the time with the family to go here and appreciate the wonderful displays. That garden stroll out back is nice though!!👍🏼

This museum is in a peaceful setting and although we didn't have time to tour the grounds, they looked gorgeous. We were surprised at the amount of American historic artwork (from paintings to guns to dolls) they have and enjoyed a bit of a history lesson. The museum is well staffed and well organized. If you take your time you can see everything in a couple of hours and they have a beautiful property you can tour when you're done.

There exhibits are Awesome. I could go here every month and find something new. It's free you know. Take a walk out back in a beautiful garden.

Like Sleeping Beauty, Norton Art Gallery has awakened to its public that is loving it in return. For about the first 50 years of its existence since opening in 1966, Norton was encased in its attractive architectural case, but aloof and neither seeking nor much welcoming visitors. Why no one could quite figure out.
What a change to the present! Yoga classes for mothers and young children in one of the impressive galleries - who else offers this anywhere? An art, music, and food gala event was held just held which sold out in its magnetic attraction of a crowd of young and old, both couples and singles with friends.
The grounds are exquisitely landscaped for strolling, now secured around the perimeter for carefree enjoyment
If only it had a museum coffee shop for a pick-me-up cup of java or tea, it would lack nothing for a perfect afternoon. Paired with the new $100 million Murphy Arts District in El Dorado, Arkansas, just an hour and half drive away, the available cultural offerings of the region definitely have been enhanced.

This was a great place to visit. The staff was courteous and the museum was clean and impressive in the amount and variety of the artwork.

The best part of the Norton Art Gallery is the collection of Remington western art. The price of admission is also wonderful. It is free. If you are there at the right time, the lower garden is fabulous when in bloom. The building is full of world class art.

The Norton Art Gallery is a very unique museum located in an out of the way, uncrowded area of the heart of Shreveport, Louisiana. You will find most interesting artwork of paintings, sculptures, a beautiful courtyard and gardens. Permanent collections features European, American, and Chinese artwork, master's paintings and more. Also presented are "timed" exhibits such as "Art of the Great War" exhibit that began August 2014 for a 4-year stay. There are also scheduled mornings for the kiddos to have a fun filled time.

The people of Northwest Louisiana are indeed fortunate to have a museum of this quality in their midst.
At the Norton you will find many docents to answer your questions and a great number of paintings, lithographs and statues. Frederic Remington's statues and paintings of scenes from the American Far Wes abound within the facility. There are also religious artifacts on display including ancient pottery pieces, bibles and my favorite, an icon entitled The Ascension of Christ and the 12 Feasts. The latter, for me, was the highlight of the entire museum.
There are also tapestries on display plus a large number of crystal items.
There is also a beautifully decorated library which is open about half of the week.
The library is beautiful, the grounds are beautiful and the gardens are beautiful.
I find no flaws in the layout, design or contents of the Norton Art Gallery. It is an ideal exhibit in an ideal location.
Shreveport, you are very, very fortunate to have something of this high quality in your city.

Got to spend an early morning at this Gallery, but had to leave early due to a luncheon they were having that afternoon.
It's a great place to visit with much to offer, not only the art work, but dolls, sculptures and weaponry. A little bit of everything for different interests.
The docents were very
knowledgeable and helpful.
Wished we had planned better and allowed time to explore the gardens.
Will definitely spend more time there on our next visit.

Norton Art Gallery is a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Shreveport. Set on acres of beautiful landscaping, most who visit do so for the azaleas and waterfalls and rarely see the museum itself. My kids love the museum. It has beautiful artwork, children's exhibits, and especially important in the summer, air conditioning! Best of all, it's free.
The one negative I would add is that photographs are no longer allowed outside. Even cell phone selfies. You can take them inside amidst millions of dollars in precious artwork, but don't dare snap a pic of a flower. Crazy!

I visit this museum several times each year. I LOVE the gardens. In the spring, the garden is an exposition of color with acres of azaleas. There is a large collection of plants from cactus, Japanese maples, blooming plants for spring and summer and fall foliage. There are pathways, sitting areas, water features, and sculptures. The garden is peaceful with the soft sounds of running water and deep chimes way up in the tall trees.
The museum itself has an impressive permanent collection and guest exhibitions. They also have started annual and seasonal events in the last few years such as a lawn party for “derby day” , a “Bloom” event featuring fresh floral arrangements, and family movie nights in the garden. I do not live in Shreveport but try to stay connected to the museum to plan my next visit.

We had read that this collection was worth seeing, but were delighted to discover its scope and beauty. Although it was too cold to walk on the grounds the day that we visited (Feb. 2015), the building, itself, was tasteful and so well suited to its purpose. The Gallery is located in a lovely residential neighborhood, yet close to the city (and food).
Inside, the presentation of the artwork is stunning. Unlike some other museums and galleries, each piece is placed where it can be seen to its best advantage, without crowding. The variety is notable. We went through the entire building in about two hours, but could easily have spent far longer in each room. Informative signage explains the works, but does not interfere with the enjoyment of the art, itself.
One area of particular interest to families may be the children's room where several over-sized book characters are on display. Check the website for details.
This gallery was the highlight of our visit to Shreveport. We can't wait to get back so that we can see the outside property and take more time to enjoy the artwork.

The museum is centrally located and easy to reach. The entrance is free, there is ample free parking, there is no gift shop, and the surrounding garden is lovely. This is a relatively small museum, well maintained, with helpful staff. We've visited numerous museums throughout the United States and Europe, and thought this one had a nice variety of artwork. The exhibits were balanced between American and European artists. I really enjoyed this museum and consider it a gem for Northern Louisiana.

There are traveling exhibits of all sorts of different art plus a permanent collection of western art and sculptures along with works by famous artists. Beautiful grounds surround the building too.

Great paintings, sculptures, weapons and just a great assortment of really interesting things. Remington and Russell rooms. It does seem that a guard follows everyone that enters. maybe a guard in every room would be less intimidating?

Located in the heart of "old" Shreveport in the fashionable Pierremont section, this oasis of beauty is a must visit! The museum is a must see, but the acres of rolling azaleas will bring the visitor to a state of euphoria when they are in full bloom. The paths carry you through towering bushes overflowing with the wonderment of nature.

This is a wonderful little museum that may family and I have enjoyed for a very long time! The gardens are fantastic and the exhibits are amazing. Lots of Louisiana history and many traveling exhibits from other museums. A must-visit staple of Shreveport!

You don’t expect a museum building and collection of this excellence from a town this size. The exhibits are nothing short if awesome. I dare you check them out. Great thanks to the amazingly philanthropic Norton family. The grounds are beyond beautiful and will thrill adult and children alike. This is a sacred place worthy of multiple visits.

It's on the smaller side but still nice. Great firearms display. Nice Remington bronze and Western displays as well. Nice grounds also. I wish it we're bigger but Shreveport isn't exactly the most culturally advanced city around...

We always bring our out of town guests to the Norton Art Museum. They have a great variety of their own art and special exhibits that are always fascinating. Beautiful gardens as well. Plan to spend the afternoon in this amazing place.

This is a very nice museum mixing modern and historical arts. It also has a very large and beautiful garden full of trees and flowers with a walking trail all through it. If you're ever in this area and you enjoy arts and nature, this is the place to go.

Wonderful place to spend a relaxing afternoon Offers many areas of paintings. Brings in special artis works during the year Very attractive displays and offers things for the young at times

I had the pleasure of touring the R.W. Norton Art Gallery with 198 cookie selling divas and had a fantastic time!!!

My wife and I went here on a Thursday morning and essentially had the museum to ourselves. Firstly, it is entirely free! They don't even ask for donations or have a gift shop. Other than not being able to take photos anywhere inside or on the grounds, this museum is fantastic - truely! There is an excellent little bit of so many ages and genres of art for nearly everyone.
There are wonderful examples of American oils, bronzes, crystal, dolls and firearms to satisfy. Do not miss the small table size displays of American miniature portraits of the Founding Fathers. Many depict them far more realistically than the famous ones I'd seen. It is almost like one is looking at photographs. The entire museum has wonderful quotes on the walls apropos to the art in the room. There are also small rooms of European and anchiant paintings, sculpture, tapestries, etc. there is even an atrium with whimsical statues for children. Outside the window in a well protected courtyard are three active bee hives (quite fun to watch.)
The park-like grounds are beautiful. If you love art you should very highly consider visiting this jewel if you'll be in the area.

Avoid the building and revel in the magnificent gardens behind the museum.
The Norton Art collection stretches the boundaries of what we consider art. And for once, this is not a good thing.
There are some genuinely weird galleries here—the Doll room comes to mind. Be sure to take a selfie of yourself with the orangutang portrait next to the drinking fountain at the East end of the building.
The Norton should be viewed as a template for what an Art Museum should look like if the Germans had won WWII.

Remington, Russell - it's a lovely setting (walk through the gardens). It's in a lovely area of Shreveport. Exit I-49 at Pierremont and go east about 1/2 mile, then left on Creswell. one block north.

Unbelievable collection right here in Shreveport. Definitely a hidden gem. Most impressive collection of 1st edition books in addition to all the art! They also have rooms full of antique guns, dolls, and silver. Something enjoyable for everyone!

Treat yourself to one of the many wonderful exhibits at Norton’s. Take a stroll through the beautiful grounds. View the fabulous art. A true treat. I visit often for special events... and don’t miss Derby Day in May.

We have been to many galleries all over the country and this gallery rivals many of them. The grounds are beautifully well kept and one of the locals said the springtime is breath taking. We only spend a couple of hours but we could have stayed longer. Truly worth the time.

We were met by a gentleman at the entrance who directed us to the exhibit we had come to view. The entire building was wonderfully set up with exhibits: paintings, sculptures, views to the outside, special exhibits, and a doll collection.
At several areas we met with more gentlemen who answered all our questions.
The gardens were lovely. It was a nice walk from one area to the other with many different flowers, trees, etc.
We understood no photographs within the art museum itself but photography was also banned in the garden area.

Going to the Norton art gallery is enough to make you feel transported into the era that the pictures were painted. They also have old coins and different clay made items all donated. It is so calm there and you can learn the history of the different paintings and people who painted them. They also have head busts of Socrates, Plato, among others. It is like stepping into relaxing history. And the garden outside is flipping AMAZING!!!! Go check it out if you can.

Stopped on a quick trip through Shreveport. The gardens are vast and incredible. Everything seems to flow really naturally while also being well kept! Some of the most beautiful hydrangeas I’ve ever seen!

A beautifully laid out and organized art gallery. Aside from the art, paintings and sculptures there are collections of very interesting items. Do miss reading and absorbing all the quotes written on the walls. Many are very thought provoking. Also try to find the red headed woodpeckers in all of Don Edward's paintings. Plan on spending at least 2 hours minimum in the gallery. You won't be disappointed with your time investment. By the way, admission and parking is free. Would not recommend for young children. Turn your cell phones off or at least on mute or vibrate. Photos are NOT permitted.

My husband I have seen the sign for this gallery many times and have never stopped in for a visit. Today was the day we went. This place goes beyond all expectations. The art, artifacts, sculptures and even a doll room. Then there are the gardens. I believe the gentleman said there was 5 miles of trails. The garden is as breathtaking as the art. Please don’t pass this one!

I know hidden gem is a cliche’, but this place truly is. Nestled in the middle of a spectacular garden in a beautiful residential setting, the museum houses a nationally significant permanent collection that while emphasizing western art also includes a surprising diversity. The collection is more than can be displayed at once, and the museum also attracts temporary exhibits throughout the year, so there always seems to be something new to admire.

Looking for a place to visit over the holidays? Admission is free and the staff is excellent. Bring a little culture and education into your life. The children will love the historical displays and paintings. A true southern beauty and must see visit.

We visited the Norton this summer. My grandson really enjoyed the children's area and walking in the gardens. There are also an impressive number of Remington sculptures in their collection. It is quite a nice, albeit small, museum. The staff were very friendly and I had worried about that with a small child. It worked out great!

Went to the Norton gallery and dont recommended. Employees stalk you while you try to enjoy art. Very creeepy even when you go to the restroom

The museum is tucked away in a lovely, established neighborhood. I was surprised at how large the museum was, the caliber of artists' works present, and and variety of art contained in the exhibits. It's a lovely place to spend an afternoon. There is no admission charge.

Beautiful gallery with breathtaking pieces. History right in front of your eyes. Nice staff, up kept perfectly. We'll be going again. There's a lot to see.

I'm going to go ahead and stick my foot in my mouth. I didn't think I would be impressed with an art gallery in Shreveport LA. Shame on me!! This is actually now one of my favorite places here in Shreveport. With beautiful works of art from so many different time periods I was absolutely blown away by their collection. Well worth the visit and it's free!!!

I am giving the R W Norton Art Gallery and Gardens 5 stars, and I didn't even get into the gallery. I arrived on a Monday morning, and the gallery is closed on Mondays. Peeking thru the front door, what I could see looked very interesting. I walked around to the back of the building and found one of the best gardens I have ever seen. Acres of azaleas, although not in bloom at the time, were very impressive. Almost as many hydragias were in full bloom and were georgeous. Most of the garden is cool and shaded by huge trees. There are paved walkways wandering throughout the garden showcasing a huge assortment of plants, shrub and trees. There is a stream running thru the garden, and a couple of fern drapped ponds. This is one of the best maintained and accessable gardens I have ever seen. If you are a gardener or plant enthusiast, or just looking for a beautiful place to relax or go for a walk, you will want to see this.

Boy, did I miss a lot in the intervening times! It is a toss up as to whether the beautiful gardens or the wonderful art and artifact collection should be the reason to go, but just GO! I promise you a good time and that you'll go away amazed at the experience.

Wow.
I just got in this town. However it’s a small place nomine expecting much as compare to other cities. Paid visit to the Musuem and I must say that oh my Gosh...... this was the last thing was expecting. I mean beautiful art pieces were exhibited and and remarkably well kept on the display with beautiful outdoor garden picturesque view. Hold on front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. I’ve been told photographing are not suppose to take so I’ve to stoped my self which is very difficult. But it makes sense. Highly recommended place. From Virgine Mary cast from the pietà by michealangelo, Rodin master pieces, prints, posters, landscape paintings simply 😯. Exhibitions.
Hope you will love this place.

Terrific free art museum and beautiful gardens. I wish I had allocated more time to view the wonderful paintings. North Carolina artist Bob Timberlake (living near my hometown) had two works on display! Well worth a visit!

The hours can be flaky and security is strange, but the art here is lovely and diverse! Security definitely could have been more friendly as to keep with the atmosphere.. There is an extensive outdoor garden to walk through. They art is from ancient history to modern. Housing original Rodin sculptures, storybook inspired sculptures, multiple antique weapons and art from around the world, this place is nothing short of amazing. Can't forget the honey bee observatory in the children's wing. Photography is not allowed.

I went on a trip to Shreveport and looked on TripAdvisor for things to do. The R. W. Norton Art Gallery got good ratings, so I put it in the GPS and got there easily. If you are interested in art and history, this is the place for you. The fact that it's free makes it even better. Each of the rooms had interesting things and historical information. The paintings were nice, the sculptures perfect and I could imagine them coming to life at night....like in the movie. Then I came upon a group of paintings that were magnificent. They touched my soul. I shared the paintings with another guest who was in another part of the museum. She followed me to the exibit and was also impressed with the beautiful landscapes. The next day, I took my husband. I wonder if you will react the same way, when your eyes gaze upon these works of art. Save time for a walk through their beautiful park. Thank you R. W. Norton Art Gallery. You were the highlight of my trip to Shreveport....the guards were nice too!

My husband and I were in Shreveport for the day on our anniversary and happened upon the R.W. Norton Art Gallery. What a gem! Free admission...and the owner obviously takes great pride in his collection. It included everything from fine art, to a doll collection, sculptures, and even a children's area. It would be easy to spend hours in there. It is a great place to get out of the summer heat and enjoy some beautiful art and artifacts. The grounds were beautiful as well, though somewhat disappointing that no photographs are allowed, according to the sign. All in all, was a great day spent at the gallery!

We loved this place! The building is a beautiful mid century gallery. It is the most eclectic collection I’ve seen. Beautiful works in a quiet, peaceful gallery. Just as great as the gallery is the gardens. Immaculately manicured grounds in a beautiful setting! I could have stayed here all day! Definitely a hidden gem! Don’t miss it and it’s free!!

From the world beating Remington collection to the amazing gardens, The Norton is should be at the top of your Shreveport To-Do list.

So awesome! Norton is a treasure to Shreveport in every sense! The movie nights for kids, the events for adults, the spectacular museum and the grounds are really something special.

Love the art from different periods. Very easy to view everything and has plenty of sitting so you can enjoy the paintings and sculptures .And the grounds are awesome with a nice walking path with access for wheelchairs and strollers! Plenty of areas for sitting and taking in the beautiful and peaceful settings!

It is a free museum with a surprisingly varied and quality collection. Includes vases, drawing, and glass. Don't miss the special wooden pedestals created specially for displaying items of the collection. The library is astonishing.

The reviews for this small museum were so positive that I feared for disappointment. Not so! My expectations were exceeded. I particularly enjoyed the Art Deco posters and the crystal animal sculpures. The artistic range of objects and paintings made me feel that I was visiting someone's carefully curated home collection. The children's room was very inviting, and the floors were works of art in and of themselves. Don't miss this hidden jewel that is right in front of our eyes, with free admission to boot.

It is a beautiful site, but you can not take pictures, even outside! Fine art, but little information. It is free, but not an impressive array of art to make the heart pound and the mind swirl in anticipation of the next room...
It is a nice quiet place to see beauty.

Artsy people will really enjoy this gallery and the gardens. When azaleas are blooming, it is absolutely gorgeous, but the gardens are always pretty. Interesting art is on display.

We saw a little of the gallery and it appeared to have pretty interesting art. We mainly went for the gardens but I think it was too late in the year for a lot of the blooms. There are 40 acres of landscaped areas with trails. The area with the waterfalls was particularly nice.

It is surprising how beautiful master pieces you can find in this gallery. I went there with no expectations and loved it! I would definitely recommend it to anyone and I am sure I will come back when I will be in Shreveport again.

This is a wonderful and free art museum. It is a real jewel, with world class artwork. Also the grounds are amazing and very relaxing to explore with the water falls and exquisite landscapes.

I visited the gardens of the Norton Art Gallery twice this past weekend. Once was simply not enough! The azaleas were in full bloom, and they literally took my breath away. We went with friends from Austin, Texas, who had just arrived here after visiting the Dallas Arboretum. It was their first trip to Shreveport, and they were amazed that this magical place was only blocks from my home, and on par with or far above any gardens they had ever experienced. In addition to the azaleas, we particularly enjoyed seeing the many varieties of Japanese maples on display. I have visited the gardens at various times of the year, and all of them have their charms, but spring time while the azaleas are in bloom should not be missed!!

This art gallery/museum is simply wonderful. They have a great mix of different types of art so everyone should be able to find something they like.

This place is a treasure. The Remington collection is amazing. Various exhibits are good. Took my grandchildren 10 and 5 and they enjoyed it. Free. Gardens beautiful. A nice walk..

This is a great place to spend inside viewing the art or outside on their scenic nature trails. We've picnicked, walked the trails, and spent time browsing inside. It's very clean and well kept. I would definitely recommend it as an attraction for Shreveport.

You can't beat the price! (Free) Lots of neat stuff. Be sure to take a walk around behind the museum and enjoy the fabulous landscaping if the weather is nice.

I had never seen such a large collection of Western art until I visited the Norton. The traveling shows are often wonderful, such as the recent Audubon collection. The gardens are beautiful and always improving. we go to the gardens often to see what is in bloom.

What a joy to visit the Gallery. Just beautiful. The art is so interesting and varied. Would love to revisit.

The Norton Art Gallery and property is a beautiful facility that is well kept. They have a nice collection of art items to peruse. They also have meeting areas available for use. I do not know the cost.

Inside is a vast maze of spectacular exhibits of everything from important and beautiful paintings of the widest ranges to a mesmerizing doll collection to weapons to tapestries to wartime items. And you could walk into a serendipitous treat like we did, a group of young poetry-reading contestants giving it their all, a huge treat for me as a lifelong poetry lover and each and every one gave beautiful, heartfelt readings. (The competition was in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.)
Outside, you have to see it to believe how pretty and relaxing it is, grounds just amazingly uplifting and refreshing. All of it free. It was our first visit (we live a few hours away and didn't know about it till recently) but hope we have a ton of opportunities to go back. If the grounds are that pleasing in the dead of winter, the warmer months are bound to be heaven there. We especially want to go when there are music and other performances that I hear they sometimes have, will be watching their website for those for sure.
Thank you, Nortons!

The Norton Gallery is a great way to spend the afternoon. The grounds outside are beautiful. The static displays inside are amazing. What a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.

Great collection of fine art, sculpture, and firearms. Very impressed with the early presidential and civil war portraits as well as the Felix Kelly collection. Rare firearms were also a treat. Beautiful park like setting. I am a fan of Remington western sculpture and this collection is the best I've seen.

My children and I visited the museum this past January and were blown away with the quality of the collection. A wide range of art - both time period and style. My children loved the Fairy Tale room, most especially the giant Wilbur statue from Charlottes Web. We had the great honor of participating in an art installation by a ceramics artist while we were there! The entire museum is fantastic and highly educational, and the grounds outside are equally exquisite.

Wonderful, eclectic museum. Large collection of bronzes -Russell, Remington and even a few Rodin. Interesting mix of American an European paintings. The grounds on Oct were nice but I'm sure they are spectacular when Azelia' are in bloom. All this and it's free

I love this serenely beautiful gallery. It is quietly inspiring to wander through the wonderful art collection with something for every style and taste.

I'm from Dallas and was not familiar with this museum/gallery. (It's called a gallery, but it is really a museum.) I first heard of it when I learned that the International Guild of Realism has a display there in June and July 2015. The building is the size of a football field. The grounds are gorgeous and there is a beautiful 40 acre botanical garden behind the museum. In the summer I would recommend going to the garden between 7:00 A.M. and 11:00 A.M. to avoid the heat. The grounds are beautiful, with huge pine trees surrounding the gallery. Then visit the museum in the indoor air conditioning. Both the art gallery and botanical garden are free. Photos are not permitted. Adults probably need a minimum of 2 hours to see the museum. This is a tremendous facility, with prints by Van Gogh, Rembrandt, you name the artist, they probably have it. They have original C.H. Russell and Remington paintings and bronzes, and Degas bronze sculpture. The emphasis is on realism. The temporary exhibition by the International Guild of Realism should not be missed. I believe it is here until July 25 or 26, 2015. All is free, even the parking is free. Anyone who appreciates fine art should visit. This is the #1 visitor attraction in Shreveport, and rightly so. The Nortons have given a tremendous gift for the public to see. The museum is closed on Mondays and holidays. Don't miss this!

This museum is huge with a wide variety of art. There are several rooms with different styles of American and international prints, paintings and sculptures. Be sure to check out the needlepoint Declaration of Independence with the magnifying glass from one of the docents. There are limited hours with the pandemic so check before you go

The R. W. Norton Art Gallery is actually a fabulous museum. They have wonderful paintings and sculptures from some of America's very best artists, as well a few European artists. They are beautifully presented in well appointed spaces, with staff that lovingly cares for them and the guests. It is a gem of a museum surrounded by 40+ acres of gardens with sculpture. We spend a wonderful day there that will always be a special memory.

I am not usually one who goes to art galleries. This is so much more. We spent almost three hours touring it and the gardens behind the building. That there is no charge (donations are accepted) and no gift store which you have to go through is even more amazing.

Outstanding museum with beautiful gardens and walking paths. Wife and I spent at least 2 hours in the museum with friends. Amazed at the variety of exhibits from pre-Civil war to modern day. Never seen such wide collection of guns. Gardens are spectacular when azaleas are blooming in Spring.

There's a little bit of something for everyone here. The grounds are beautiful, too. It's worth the time spent.

We were not the only ones disappointed that this placed was closed when their website said open. No sign on the door.

Wow, what a wonderful museum. As you walk in the front door(free admission), the first two paintings you see are done by Asher Durand, landscape artist of the Hudson River School movement--very impressive--no telling what they're worth. Whole section dedicated to the Hudson River movement. Large number of bronzes by Fredric Remington and western art by Remington and Charles Marion Russell. One of the largest collections of Steuben Glass in the US. Very interesting visiting photographic exhibition on Storyville--New Orleans' red light district in the early 1900s. Definitely go see this art museum--well worth your time.

This was an unexpected surprise! Kudos to the Norton family for making their extensive art collection available to the public at no cost. Great variety with many oil paintings and bronzes by a variety of artists including Remington and Russell. Absolutely worth a stop.

Last time I tried ti visit the Norton was on the one day of the week it was closed, so this trip to Shreveport we made sure to visit. The gallery is designed in a subtle arc with different rooms housing the various exhibits. Upon entering you're greeted by a docent, who will explain the rules and layout of the galleries. Most of the artists are contemporary and American, but it is an interesting mix of paintings, sculpture, and artifacts. There is a large display of Remington and a nice firearms display. Overall this is a nice way to spend a few hours on a dreary day. One interesting aside, the museum has a working beehive in one of the sculpture gardens.

Pure bliss walking the trail and viewing the beautiful plants, statues, small babbling waters, and koi. Especially wonderful when azaleas are blooming, but worth visiting often at any time

This lovely local treasure is a pleasure inside and out. I especially enjoy the Western art on display. The gardens are magnificent and a place I love to walk around all year long. Don't miss the gardens when azaleas are ablaze!

My wife and I have traveled much of the States and Europe visiting renowned art galleries and museums. This gallery is only a short 80 miles from home and it is our first visit. Wonderful. A treasure if Art so close to home. Why did we wait so long to visit. Small in comparison to some, but well worth the visit. A great gift to the public.

Grounds looked lovely, but NOT open 7 days a week. Contrary to what trip advisor and yelp say. Tried to go Wednesday about 11. Didn't look open so we called. Message said hours are 1-5 Thursday-Sunday.

A wonderful gallery. artwork of all kinds. Wonderful collection of bronz, paintings, dolls, old firearms and ect. Also visiting exhibitions

I love this museum! It's small enough to easily see the entire collection in one visit, but that said, it is a large collection. I love the western art and the doll collection is exquisite. There is something for everyone, from traditional to modern, and of course they have shows/exhibits. In the spring, the grounds are the show, as there are thousands of azaleas in bloom with trails to walk. Many brides have their pictures taken here among the flowers. It's not to be missed if you're in the area in early-mid Spring. The Museum is great anytime!

Norton Art Gallery is a treasure to Shreveport right in the middle of town. From the beautiful gardens to the incredible art exhibits both the special exhibits and the permanent art are a treat to see. Try and visit one of their many community events. The Art of Beer and the Valentine's event were fabulous. The staff is always available to share one of Shreveport's great treasures and show you around.

This gem is the best place in Shreveport. The shaded garden trails offered a wide variety of plants amidst streams, ponds, and sculptures. The gallery itself offered wonderful historical pieces. I could have spent all day at these two locations.

I live in town and enjoy visits on occasion esp when there is a new exhibition. They have some good permanent Remington's and other painters to see anytime

Norton has consistently been at the forefront in Shreveport as far as exhibiting quality art from different periods. To wander the halls in this place is to transport oneself into various eras of great masters. One cannot fully appreciate this Gallery in one day...it takes several if you want to really immerse yourself. The gardens are simply magical and great care has been taken to ensure that a truly wonderful visual experience takes place with the abundance of ponds, waterfalls, gorgeous plants and seating areas to just reflect on the beauty. I feel that the Norton family has given Shreveport a gift of all gifts and we all have to take care in being good stewards of this gift.

You won't regret visiting Norton. You will either fall in love with the exquisite azalea garden outside, or the Remington's inside. Either way you will be looking at lovely things and doing it for free. Can't beat that.

Orginial Remington Art AWSOME, Western Cowboy & American Indian Art, an a super fine gun collection. Exit off I-49 to Perrmount east until you get to Creswell St., turn left, Art gallery two blocks on right.

The gardens are amazing! Something is always in bloom. Lots of trails with coves and nooks everywhere. Many sculptures waiting to be discovered. It is unfortunate though that you cannot take pictures, but I guess it forces you to be in the moment ;) Enjoy!

I've taken groups of ten year olds, teen agers, and 85 year olds to Norton at different times. Every age group wanted to return. Watching my 85 year old father-in-law admiring the art, gun collection, and Remington Statues is a treasured memory. This truly is a Shreveport gem.

Very nice museum a lot better than I thought. A good verity of art. Nice garden are too. Good for half day trip. Plus it's free.

So glad we sought this museum out and visited! Beautiful art. My husband appreciated the gun collection. A special section of art for children. The setting is another destination not to be missed. Grounds are immaculately manicured with a walking trail to enjoy. We cannot wait to return to see hundreds of azaleas in full bloom!

This is just a lovely art gallery/museum. There was lots of different art all displayed very well. I enjoyed it.

This "gallery" is not worth the admission (which is free). While trying to appear as offering something of value, is nothing but a stuffy pretentious joke. Faux finishes to fakes copies and forgeries, I'm sure the only reason the don't let you take pictures is so real scholars and critics don't out them publicly. Thanks for the laugh.

Have enjoyed so many visits and written great reviews for others but the changes in the gallery are so confusing and just sad. It appears someone loaded all the paintings on a cart and took a stapler around for any empty wall. No rhyme or reason here. Why is Harry Lee away from General Lee and historical paintings? Why are they so mixed that the guards have to consult to help one find types of art? Who put those plastic quotes on the walls? Looks like Sams Wholesale but believe Sams used better quality plastic stickons. Still, with the art and grounds being first class..... we have to accept that someone now owns the place and doesn't give a fig for the legacy.

It was too hot to visit the garden but the Art Museum was huge, great and free. We got there at 3:30 and they close at 5. Had to rush a little to see everything but we really enjoyed it.

Every spring ,SHREVEPORT opens it secret....flowers...and this is the place for seeing the most beautiful site of flowers, specifically azaleas , every color , and class possible.around the galery you will delight , and feed your eyes ,until the next spring comes back, shreveport has ton of places full of flowers ,but Norton is The place.

My family loves to go see the gorgeous flowers in the spring when the azaleas are blooming. The views are breathtakingly beautiful. Lots of benches to sit and listen to the water trickling over the rocks and birds chirp. Totally free to the public!

The art museum is free to enter as is the large many acre gardens. Art is classic American with a few European.

The gallery has an outstanding bronze and art collection as well as 40 plus acres of azaleas, Japanese Maples and other flowering bushes. The gardens have many sculptures tucked in here and there plus many benches where you can sit and enjoy the peace.
The gallery is closed on Monday but the gardens are open.

you'll be surprised at the collection...don't forget the garden in back! did I mention it is FREE today...and every day!!

This is a very nice art museum with a much larger collection than I expected for a town of this size. It is quite a treasure. It is located in a lovely section of town with beautiful garden space. The staff was very interesting and informative. They have a wide collection of art but seems to have an especially nice selection of American and Western art.

A mixture of classic and contemporary art of various mediums. Rotation of displays and beautiful grounds especially when the azaleas are in bloom. Local favorite for wedding and engagement pictures .

I love this art gallery. Everything is beautifully displayed and the exhibits change so you get surprises. It's quiet and perfect for just relaxing and forgetting about stress.

Yes, it is a hidden gem off the beaten path. I feel doubly grateful when I visit a great place that I have never been to before and discover that it is a hidden gem. The museum is arranged according to artist or time period or theme. Plenty to see and even more to come back for when I visit Shreveport again. How did I miss the Marilyn Monroe sculpture?

Beautiful and gorgeous flowers and plants under a shady pine area in the back which begs to be walked through very slowly. This place is very relaxing and well taken care of.

An interesting, unexpected museum with a variety of items to view: paintings, sculptures, old West, guns, dolls, native american art, tiny handpainted ceramic portraits.
It's quite large and fascinating, plan for a couple of hours at least. Free parking, free entry.
No gift shop. No photo's allowed, bummer. There are gardens, grounds, but we didn't have time for them.

The R.W. Norton Art Gallery is a rare gem in the middle of Shreveport, LA. The collection is surprisingly overwhelming. I was so impressed with the exhibits on display. The Remington sculptures alone are magnificent. If you have a chance to go into the library, you will find lots of very interesting books, in particular, some of the works of nature artists that I won't name. The grounds of the Norton are filled with such beauty. Best is when all of the azaleas are in bloom, but even when they are not in bloom, you will be treated to awesome gardens.

We took a granddaughter there for the purpose of taking pictures of a granddaughter suitable for framing. Success was ours! The surroundings were beautiful, with an abundance of flowering plants, benches, and lush grass. We were thrilled with the results. Scored at the top!

Very nice place. We all truly enjoyed visiting there. Nice events. Beautiful grounds! Definitely a spot to put on your go by and see!

There is truly something here for everyone. The variety of arts is amazing! There is a huge collection of Stuben glass, Remingtons, a gallery with dolls, we didn't get a chance to see it all but that definitely just means we should come back soon! Even if you could care less about art they have a great gun collection.

Shreveport is dead as a dodo, depressed and impoverished. I had to spend a night here on a road trip. I found this place and also the adjoining botanical garddens. Not very big, either of them, but enough to sustain interest for a short while and a nice pleasant walk. It is free.

Small but awesome local gallery, Remington art, paintings and they have special events, well worth your time, and the grounds are very beautiful especially in the spring.

Very few smaller cities have a private museum with the quality and amount of art at this museum. It is worth the visit - several times.

I never would have known this was in Shreveport. I was amazed by what we saw. Really beautiful and great atmosphere. Something I would recommend to others and come back and visit myself. My husband is not into art but stayed and looked for hours without complaining.

Went with the whole family, has a wide variety of works, and you get a better understanding of the history of the area. This is a very extensive collection.

We didn't have alot of time to spend here (only an hour) but what we saw was nice for and Art Gallery. My wife, Teenage Son, and myself enjoyed it. It was geared to a kid at bit older then my 8 year old, but she wasn't unhappy, just bored. It was a good size and it's free, so no complaints there. The only complaint we had, the staff at the door came across as rude. I understand that they want phones on vibrate and no photography at all, and not everyone listen, so it is probably an issue all the time. However, they could have told use this in a nicer way. I'm guessing they just have to say it so often they they get tired of saying it, so it comes across at rude.

The awe inspiring and well shaded gardens are our go to when we want to take our one month old son on a stroll. It is a great place to slow down, unplug, and relax.

I call the R.W. Norton Art Gallery a hidden Gem because it's located in a neighborhood off of Line Ave. The Gallery's focus is American Art with special attention paid to Western Artists like Frederick Remington. Highlights of the gallery include gun and doll galleries. Through Nov 2018, there is a World War I poster exhibit.
The gallery is free to the public. We didn't make it to the gardens.

keep eye on your children, if you take them here. Not a child friendly place, too many things they would like to touch, and they aren't allowed to touch, make sure they don't sit in any chairs in the nursery story room!! The security will follow your family, if you have kids, felt like we were being stalked, or were criminals!

Missed the azalea blooms but thoroughly enjoyed walking through the gardens. Didn't go inside but will on next visit. Beautiful landscaping. Hills and small creeks and ponds. Very relaxing. Lovely Sunday afternoon stroll.

This is more than an art museum. The gardens are lovely year round but especially in April. The museum has some beautiful American Art and French posters. Worth a stop and it is free.

I am 55 years old and have lived within 10 miles of the Norton Art Gallery most of my life. I have visited Galleries in larger cities, but until this past December, I had not made it to the one in my backyard. Our extended family was in town for the holidays when our daughter, who loves the Norton Gallery, suggested we visit. We were all amazed at the quality and diversity of Art. The Norton Gallery is first class! The grounds are also beautiful with walking paths through a variety of different garden scapes. The Gallery continues as a most generous gift from the Norton family to our community. Admission for both the grounds and gallery is free.

Norton is a beautiful place to visit. Not only does the art gallery have amazing artwork and sculptures, it also has beautiful gardens for a leisurely stroll. The Norton hosts various community events throughout the year (outdoor movie nights, etc) that attract new people to the facility. There is no admission cost. Be sure to check the hours of operation because they are not open everyday. Make time while you are here to give this gorgeous place a couple of hours of your time. You won't regret it.

The landscape here during azalea season (only a couple of weeks in early April) is one of the prettiest things I've ever seen. Waterfalls, rocks, benches, sculptures, and a sea of pink and white. The sad part is that no photography is allowed. However, this might make it all the more precious. You have to soak it all in and treasure the memory until next year.

Our recent visit to the Norton was most satisfying as we viewed the many paintings and statuary of the early West. The many Remington bronzes were fascinating and displayed Cowboys, Indians, Buffalo and Cattle in action. The paintings of life on the prairies were stunning in their real life portrayals. A trip to the Museum is highly
recommended if you are a fan of the early American West.

This free museum on attractive grounds has a lot to enjoy--choice paintings and treasured artifacts, special exhibits beautifully displayed, and a collection of large, costumed dolls, among other things. The printed explanations posted with the items would be an education in themselves. We were so sorry that we ran late that day and had under two hours there, We hope to have opportunity to go back.

It's free and beautiful! Nice place to walk your dog or just take a walk. The hours have changed a couple of times and now the place is only open Th-Su :(.

Great facility with lots to appreciate. My wife and I are fans of art depicting scenes from the Old West, so were very pleased with the original paintings and sculptures by C.M. Russell and Frederick Remington, as well as Western landscapes by Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, and painters of equal and lesser notoriety. If you are not familiar with this type of art, visit anyway; I am sure you will find something of interest -- old firearms, perhaps, or dolls, or crystal, or tapestries. Be sure to set aside at least a full morning or afternoon to try to take everything in, if not an entire day; our tour guide gave us 90 minutes, and it was nowhere near long enough. The collection (advertised as having more than 400 paintings on display, as well as other attractions detailed by others in reviews below) is housed in a well-kept building surrounded by beautiful grounds. Very friendly and helpful staff.

The: large number of bronze pieces by Remington of cowboy and Indian art is surprising. Each work catches the subject in "stop-action,' whether it is a bucking bronco or a Native American fighting a bear. So many other beautiful oil paintings.

Norton Art Gallery is a privately owned garden and gallery, featuring a very large collection, with a primary focus on art from the American West... but don't miss the grounds... indeed, it would be hard to miss the grounds! Acres and acres of gorgeous azaleas, with water falls and fountains among towering pines! Late March through April is the best time to view the gardens if you want to see them in bloom, but the grounds are always beautiful and peaceful

I went to this gallery with no expectations, and it was spectacular, I absolutely loved it. Being from Europe and knowing only the european art, I enjoyed the part with american art. The pictures of american nature were brilliant, I would definitely recommend to visit this beautiful gallery to anyone coming to Shreveport.
The park was great as well, it was an enriching experience overall.

Wow! I read the reviews but was not prepared for this awesome museum. We spent over two hours here and could have spent much longer but they were closing. There are beautiful paintings, lots of sculpture by Remington and others, War posters, guns, crystal and other collections. I was most enthralled by the doll collection. I could have spent a couple of hours in this room alone, reading all the information but my husband rushed me to continue on (he thought the dolls were kind of creepy) to see the rest of the museum. I highly recommend that if you are anywhere near Shreveport, save some time for this museum. It is all on one floor but you do walk quite a lot. Plenty of room for a wheelchair if needed and there are resting benches in several rooms. The grounds are beautiful too. No photography is allowed and they ask you to turn you cell phone to silent. Unbelievably, it is FREE!!

This is really worth taking in on a leisurely Sat/Sun afternoon. Don't rush. I spent 2.5 hrs there this afternoon and didn't come close to seeing 1/2 the collection. Eclectic collection of paintings, sculpture, and other items of historical significance. Tends to lean towards American art. Beautiful grounds w/flowers and walking trails covering 40 acres.

Wonderful exhibits, with especially fine paintings and sculpture of the American frontier. Also beautiful gardens.

This has been a great place to visit for many years. The grounds are magnificent! We go often for picnics, walks, family outside games, etc. The museum itself has tons of great artwork. You must check this place out!

We were astounded at the number of exhibits in this gallery. The gun & sword collection is remarkable. I loved the large display of Wedgewood, simply gorgeous. The Remington and Russell exhibits are different from the standard Western theme. We were so impressed at the variety of paintings, bronzes & small statues. The liberty bell was an added bonus. The gallery was spotless & the staff was wonderful. We had a very memorable experience.

There are no plans in the near future to open the museum to the general public. This does NOT mean we are out of business; it only means that we, too, are adjusting to the new reality of staff and public health and safety measures. So, please bear with us and keep checking our website and social media for updates.

Norton's, as the locals call it, is a wonderful place to visit. Educational for the old and young! The grounds behind Norton's is Heaven on Earth...beautiful gardens, babbling brooks, a bird sanctuary..so peaceful. A great place to take family pictures..although I think professional photographers are no longer allowed to take pictures.
I place to get away from it all and listen to God's creation speak.

Wonderful museum with beautiful grounds filled with azaleas, sculptures, rock gardens. The museum, which is free, is filled with outstanding collections. Go visit! The grounds are especially wonderful during the Spring when the azaleas are in bloom.

the docents were so friendly and helpful. We were amazed at the amount of high quality art and variety of the gallery. The quotes on the walls were timely and thought provoking.

This amazing place is here in Shreveport, La. I've heard that it has a 2 billion dollar endowment. World class art, guns and dolls right here. Like taking a trip to Paris. Take a few hours and enjoy some art and history. Located on prime real estate in the heart of Line Ave. The gardens are worth the trip!

Azealas are in bloom! It was overcast, but took a lovely walk in the gardens, which as always, was fantastic. This was the first time we saw the full bloom. Fantastic colors.

Tucked away quite conveniently among local pines and thousands of striking azaleas and other extensive flora is a just/‘athe-right-size museum of art donated by a local multi-generational family.
The grounds, with winding and paved walks, circle the museum building, themselves s worthy “destination.” Upon entering the museum itself, one is struck by the astonishing variety of artwork, statuary, tapestries, and, yes, even a child-friendly collection. The artwork is first class and even has a Mary Cassett or two for good measure. My favorite are giant oils selecting the Himalayas and incredibly precarious monasteries. The museum specializes in paintings and cast sculptures by The famous Remington and Russell.
I can’t go on. You should go, again and again, as I do. The museum leadership has shifted from reserved to very community and visitor friendly, with continuously inviting activities. Kudos to the Norton’s, especially the present generation, for you have offered a gold mind of visual enlightenment to all who choose to visit.

A really good art gallery for a town this size - lots of western art - paintings and bronze sculptures and many good traveling exhibits Nice way to spend an afternoon espeially in the heat of the summer

Huge oaks and impressive red pines set the stage as you enter the grounds.
In counterpoint the museum stands wide and bland, of brick and concrete.
Then you enter.
And you again flip to impressive, with many and diverse galleries showing landscapes, WW1, western, US history, and lots of guns.
Give yourself at least 3 hours... Or better a few shorter visits because so much quality is overwhelming (and there's no coffee shop inside).

What a great collection. My favorites are the American paintings section. I fell in love with several paintings here. My favorite is Thyangboche Monestary painted by Peter Ellenshaw - breathtaking! Bob Timberlake's Snow at the Studio is also lovely. And there are many more!
The ground and neighborhood are also very beautiful.

In addition to the extensive American and European art exhibits, which are worth the visit on their own, the gardens surrounding the museum are a work of art as well.
Patrons are not allowed to take photos, but the experience is memorable.

They interviewed my father, who is 91 years old to preserve his memories as a
WW2 veteran.
He was treated wonderfully with honor and respect for his service.
The Norton is more than just Art,...... It is preserving history.

March is a pretty good bet for catching Azalea blooms on the Norton grounds. The grounds are professionally maintained all year round and are always a nice place for a relaxing stroll, but spring time flowers are special here!

The Norton Art Gallery is a wonderful museum with a diverse inventory. Paintings, sculpture, and other items such as guns and dolls populate the archetypically mid-century museum. Equally impressive are the scenic grounds, consisting of a large amount of azaleas that put on a beautiful springtime display. Sadly, security has had to be a bit more overbearing and obvious in the last year or so after a local "photographer" abused the facilities during a shoot. This led the gallery to impose restrictions on activity on the grounds and to build a new fence. But otherwise, the gallery has continued to enhance its collections and offer an immense amount of art and culture free of charge to the public.

This art museum doesn't have a fee to get in or a real gift shop, but don't miss it. The art is spectacular. the botanical gardens full of camellias and azaleas were a delight for our winter weary eyes, and the food trucks outside were pretty tasty. There were kids doing scavenger hunts and playing in the kid friendly areas and there were multiple school classes on tour. We sat and just watched the bee hives for a bit. If you have a member of the family who hates art maybe they will like the gun or the doll collection - Wowzer. I learned more about dueling pistols than I wanted to know. We did 2 half days and loved it.

Great place to spend a hot afternoon (or really anytime). Quality of exhibits is high plus many different types of collections.

Amazing collection, some local art some more well-renowned. Wide range of styles/types of paintings, some small sculptures. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring this large gallery.

In a wonderful neighborhood location with grounds full of azaleas, walking paths, fountains, ponds and outdoor art. Inside it houses a world class art collection with emphasis on Western art. Has seasonal displays and sponsors seasonal "museum parties". A real jewel!

I visited this Art Gallery with a group of teachers. We enjoyed the great art and the beautiful greenery that surrounds the gallery. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.

Always something blooming; beautiful grounds with streams and small waterfalls leading to ponds filled with goldfish; great walking trails as well

We enjoyed all of the displays. There is something for everyone. Free, without a donation box in sight. The 40 acre grounds are open from 7 - 7, and are stunning. Wonderful flowers, birds, pathways, sculptures, benches and water features. No photography allowed, inside or out. Would have liked to take photos of the flowers and birds. Looking forward to another visit.

This is a wonderful oasis in the heart of Shreveport. Beautiful place to walk and enjoy the outdoors

I usually come here to walk the beautifully kept grounds, but since friends and family were in town we went inside. It has a good mix of Remington type bronzes, civil war era artifacts, classical European art and some modern and local art. On the small side but well done. It’s has something for everyone, even children.

This museum contains an eclectic show of art and the grounds are a work of art as well.
If you are planning a trip to Shreveport, don't miss this gem nestled in a beautiful older neighborhood. Actually, you could plan a trip there just to visit this museum.
There is no admission charge.

This is one of the hidden gems of Shreveport. Its open every day except for Monday. They always have a lot to look at inside along with all the paths outside with beautiful flowers and waterfalls along the way. Highly recommend this place for the entire family and its free to the public ,which is always a plus.

I took my girlfriend here on a first date two years ago and we loved it so much we came back the next year! The paintings and sctlptures are really neat and the gardens are gorgeous!! (Even getting caught in the rain was a treat because of the entire atmosphere!)
The best part is that this place is free!!

Why I never visited when I lived in Shreveport, I have no idea. What a treasure. Amazing Remingtons and Russells (world-class collection), amazing/unique/unsusal pistol collection, terrific art pieces of multiple genres (except weird modern abstract.)
Except for one VERY LOUD younger woman who works there and insists on TALKING LOUDLY, it's a very quiet, peaceful place full of beauty. Highly recommended.

The gallery has been undergoing renovations to make it even better. A recent visit revealed new wall treatments, floor coverings, ceilings, and lighting.
Many works have been moved, and I found the new method of grouping them most pleasing. While some of my favorites evaded me, or have been rotated to storage, I enjoyed several works for the first time.
It is a great time for a visit or revisit to the Norton Art Gallery.

Very nice museum! Never would guess that Shreveport would have such a nice museum. Not very busy and off the beaten path. Will go back!

As an out-of-state visitor, I was amazed by this place! I could have easily spent 2 days admiring the amazing art and artifacts, and another wandering through the immaculate gardens.
I would've liked to make reference to pieces I enjoyed, and should have taken notes (photos are not allowed).
The gardens are absolutely beautiful, and pet-friendly!
We visited the day after the beekeepers, so there was lots of action near the hives. But, the busy bees were fun to watch from inside, near the life-sized fairytale exhibit.
What an awesome local treasure this is! AND, It's FREE!
Overall, an impressive collection of art by any measure. Can't wait to visit again!

This was a great experience for the entire family. The staff was wonderful! So many artifacts along side the actual art works themselves.

I must admit that we did not go into the gallery. My review is just about the gardens, which were truly lovely. The hydrangeas included a wide variety of colors and were just beautiful. The azaleas were already past their prime, but the multitude of bushes suggested that they were stunning when in bloom. Sculptures in the garden add to the charm of the place. I highly recommend a walk in the gardens! (And perhaps on a future trip we will have time to experience the gallery also.)

The gallery is awesome! We appreciate all people , who had invested their time, patience and love in Norton Arts center and wonderful park.
If you are at Shreveport and have a free time , it's a place that you must visit!

Wonderful walking paths in gardens behind museum and nice small museum. Restaurants nearby. Some small traveling exhibits are sometimes shown.

The art and the gardens are one of the hidden gems of this community. The best time in the gardens is the spring, and the art is interesting year round.

Definitely well worth visiting. The museum contains alot of art which appeals to all ages, from painting to western bronzes and Steuben glass animals. The museum also consists of a 40 acres sculpture garden with walking trails and various flowering plants.

The Norton is a true gem in Shreveport. The quality of the exhibits and pristine gardens are something you would expect in a metropolitan city, and I always feel like I’ve been on vacation after just an hours visit. A true Shreveport treasure!

The Norton has an amazing variety of exhibits from oil paintings to watercolors to sculpture to textiles, glass, firearms, dolls, books -- the list goes on and on. And the museum is BIG -- you probably need to plan to be there a couple of hours to see and absorb everything that's on display. And it's free! As in most museums, you're not allowed to touch the exhibits, but there is a children's gallery with fun sculptures that kids are allowed to climb on. Right outside the window is a beehive. There is a really big collection of Russell and Remington Western art. There is also a big display of dolls dressed in historically accurate clothes and a giant book of original Audubon art. Truly, there is something for everyone here. Sometimes when we go we're allowed to take our cameras in, and sometimes we're not. Call ahead to see what their current policy is, because they'll want you to leave your camera at the front desk if they're not allowing cameras at that time. Not sure why that policy changes, but you'll want to be prepared.

Visiting to S'Port for other purposes and decided to make a Dad's- Daughter road trip day with my 19 yr old. She is artsy and enjoys adventure. After a good breakfast and a stop at the guitar shop, we came here "to see" . At first we were a little skeptical. Then I saw the original Remington painting. We inquired of the host the background of the museum and followed his lead on some exhibits. it was really unbelievable the amount of and diversity in the collection. I was simply blown away by the historical pieces going back to he Egyptians, Middle ages, Renaissance, and Colonial period. And American historical pieces and military items...Wow. The rooms of landscape portraits from masters were mesmerizing. I spent too little time there. There were even modern artists and many more paintings and sculptures by American artists like Remington. It was overwhelming. To boot, the venture was at no charge. I encourage those who may have any interest in history or art to visit and be prepared to spend at least an hour. It is not everyday you come upon a Paul Revere crafted Bell similar to the Liberty Bell in Louisiana. Go.

I really enjoyed the history at this place. It has some much to offer and the best part is it is free. They have a good bit of art from different periods and their firearm collection is awesome! They literally probably have billions of dollars worth of art. Many different types of art: classical, abstract, local artists, dada, and even some surrealism. The cool thing is they have seasonal adjustments. What a neat place to tour or take a field trip.

The Norton Art Gallery is one of my favorite place in Shreveport, LA. It is a museum for men as well as women. It features an antique gun collection and sculptures by Russell and Remington. This one of my favorite museums of all time. I have been to England, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, etc. and it still ranks with the best. For it's size, it is at the top.

For the first time ever, June 2012 I finally went inside. I have lived here all of my life and I never knew the beauty inside. Highly recommend. Don't take small, impatient children. Especially if you really want to check it out.

First class place to visit in Shreveport. Beautiful manicured property with much to see and do. Add this to your trip.

An awesome walking park that’s free.we had so much with the desert area and the waterfalls. It’s dog friendly and clean!

I remember visiting Norton's Art Gallery while on a field trip. It not only displays art but also some history of the local community. There is also a walking trail that goes through the well manicured gardens directly behind the gallery. Perfect for taking a relaxing stroll. There are not photos allowed inside the gallery.

Had a great time walking around the Gallery, liked that it was free. Kids loved the civil war displays and different gun collections were very interesting.

The beautiful grounds are so nice and tranquil. It is such a great place to visit. The art gallery has some amazing sculptures and art and the gardens are a must see. It is so beautiful.

It is difficult to imagine that the gallery and its grounds are free.
Art pieces including paintings, sculptures, silver pieces, glass pieces, and rare books are on display, along with collections from dolls to firearms.
In addition to the gallery, the grounds are beautiful. Over 100 varieties of azalea are represented and were in full bloom last weekend. The forty acres contain thousands of plants, streams, waterfalls, and ponds.
The Norton is a great place, and the price...

Spent the afternoon with some coworkers walking through the gallery. It was better than I expected - wide variety of art. Be patient, relax and learn.

This is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon in Shreveport. While not huge, the museum offers an eclectic collection of art with a focus on American artists from a variety of eras. Even after reading all of the positive reviews on tripadvisor, I was surprised at how nice it was. The grounds are beautiful - even in February - when there's not a lot in bloom. The water features are just gorgeous.

Great! Will visit again. Worth the time. Was my first visit and am so happy my friend suggested it. Amazing to see.

This is one of the best kept secrets in Shreveport. It has a diverse and interesting collection and makes great efforts to interest the community and children in art. Really nice staff.

My teenage age son wanted to visit some art exhibits during out visit to Shreveport. We picked this one for a Saturday morning.
All I can say is that I was very impressed with the art and the exhibits here. This place was great and I would highly recommend.

Well displayed collection of many different types of art as well as nice Gardens.
We went to see a show of paintings of flowers recently. It was really well displayed. They have done a good job and getting more of the art out from storage and interviewing. It is worth at least an hour and probably two to stop in and see this grand place.

I had just gotten back from Europe when my husband brought me here. With offerings ranging from Lutrec linographs to Native American art, to a celebration of Alice in Wonderland, Shreveport's very own Norton Museum is a beautiful local treasure.

The Norton is tucked away in the midst of a neighborhood fronting beautiful gardens with statuary and water features. Inside is a remarkable and surprising collection of art - from modern, impressionistic, western to doll collections and changing exhibits. It holds events on the grounds and has an educational area for children.

We decided to take in the Norton on a Saturday trip to Shreveport because the weather was too dreary for any outside activities. This was our first trip to the museum and we really enjoyed the experience. The gallery is in a long arching building which features several galleries of different art. Most of the art is contemporary American, but there are some older pieces. Alos, there is a nice collection of fire arms and a kind of creepy doll collection. I also enjoyed the collection of propaganda posters. Overall the museum, while not being really outstanding, offers a nice diversion on a wet and dreary afternoon. While there are no pictures allowed, the docents are nice and don't hover over your shoulder as we've experienced in some museums.

The art gallery is simply amazing with its breadth of exhibits! Here are just a few examples: Egyption artifacts, early American paintings, Medieval tapestries, an extensive gun collection, and modern American art. There is a charming children's room. I didn't have enough time to see as much as I would have liked

The gardens are GREAT. Inside the art work is very impressive. It is free but you can make a donation. I highly suggest taking a look.

No pictures aloud, but only thing I can say is oh my. Eye candy galore. You will see things you never saw before. Artists like Felix Kelly, Moran , Remington , Russell etc. bronze statues , and wedge wood pottery, dolls, guns . All excellent. I learned a lot and enjoyed this free museum.

Norton's holds some great themed events; my favorite is Night at the Museum where actors "stage" paintings; outside, there are food trucks and live music, and, on the lawn, they show the movie on a big screen. We've gone to "themed" beer tastings there, that featured local brews. In the spring, the azaleas are amazing. All year long, we walk the paths through shaded gardens behind the museum. It's very peaceful and hardly ever crowded.
Around the corner from my house.
This place is a hidden jewel. The museum itself contains exhibits and individual works of art that one would not expect to see. The grounds are beautiful year round. I walk there every day it is not raining. It is unexpected oasis of natural beauty and quiet in the middle of a residential area.
