We live just a few miles from the park and have been going there as long as we've lived in the area, which is nearly 30 years. Rib Mountain is one of the highest hills in Wisconsin. It is a quartzite monadnock covered with dense stands of mostly hardwoods--maples, birches, oaks, etc. There are many marked hiking trails. Some involve some rocky areas and others don't. Some of the trails are open in winter, too, for showshoeing or hiking. There is a 96-step wooden lookout tower for the public at the top of the "mountain" and plenty of room for picnicking. There is also a newly built building for retreats and special occasions. Rib Mtn. State Park was formerly a beautiful place to camp with a view of the Wausau metro area and miles beyond, but the campsite was removed a few years ago. Most campers are RVers these days and they demand lots of amenities. Wisconsin has responded by upgrading some campgrounds and eliminating others. Rib Mtns' was eliminated. What a shame, especially for those of us who prefer simpler tent or pop-up camping. A few years ago, the walking path from the bottom of the hill to the top was improved and this is a very popular hike for those wanting a good walking or jogging workout. Bikers also use the main park road for a workout beyond my ambition. The north slope of Rib Mtn. is leased to a private ski resort owner (the mistakenly named Granite Peak--there is no granite in Rib Mtn). This is, I believe, the largest ski resort in Wisconsin. The owner currently is looking to expand the number of runs, which would impact a few of the hiking trails, and this is a controversial matter in 2017--not sure how it will turn out.

Nearest "mountain" to Chicago I could find at four and a half hours out of Chicago. Nice elevation for a hike without mosquitoes. Cooler than Chicago. The trails were not marked so clearly. Red trail was pretty rocky. View of nearby area from the top.

A large hill in central Wisconsin startles you when you first see it. It rises up 800 feet above the surrounding terrain. The park itself is not an all day destination unless you're camping in one of the sites with the great views to the north. The hiking trails are so-so, through the woods, not much for views. On top of the mountain is an ampitheater. It is the site of concerts which make for a lovely evening. The band plays on a stage with views of up to 40 miles behind them as they play. Kids sit on the rocks nearby and watch and scurry around.

My wife and I, and lots of others also like to park at the base of the auto road and hike up the paved path. It follows the road the entire way so it's not too steep, but it is a steady climb the entire 700 feet of elevation gained. Going down is easier! A more strenuous route up is on the north side of the hill. Park by the ski area on the north side of the mountain (Granite Peak) and hike up the various paths. It is definitely steep in places and will give your thighs a workout!

Last, but certainly not least, is the tower. Built at the hills highest points the views on a clear day extend 40-50 miles. In the fall, the view is colorful, in the winter it's cold, in the spring refreshing and in the summer delightful.

My family reunion included a short hike up the quarry trail. It was well shaded. It's a wide trail-probably an old service road but not too rocky.

This was not a high priority stop on our roat trip through the area, but it really was a nice stop. The tower and numerour overlooks are well maintained and enjoyable. There are many people out taking advantage of the area and it is well worth your time. $13 entry fee for out of state visits, soften the blow by visiting multiple state parks in a single day.

The views were amazing, I walked a lot and was quit a pleasant time. I would recommend to any one who is a out doors person and wants something to do out side in the winter

While staying at the Stewart Inn in Wausau we decided to go to Rib Mountain State Park to do some hiking. The daily parking fee is $8.00 for Wisconsin residents. They have a good trail map and some wonderful, well maintained trails for all skill levels.

The scenery is beautiful and they have strategically placed parking areas and bathrooms. There is even a concessions stand for drinks and snacks.

Beautiful Fall hike! Very kid friendly. Our 6 and 4 year old loved all the rocks to climb on and playground. Lots of paved paths and dog friendly. Definitely coming back.

It's been years since I've been to Rib Mountain. The best I will say for it, is since it's really the only "mountain" (hill) for the area it's good for what it is. The tower view is nice. I never skied it in winter, when I did ski up north, we went further north to higher grounds.

Beautiful views even with the park being technically closed. We were not able to go up the observation tower, but you are still at the top of Granite Peak and see beautiful views. Nice hiking trails available as well.

By Kevin O |

Driving to the top of Rib Mountain State Park takes you up a gently sloping and winding road for 10 minutes or so. The hour long visit we made carried a $5.00 charge, not sure if a longer visit hits the wallet any harder. Make sure to climb the observation tower to get a compete 360 view of Marathon County. Our visit happened on an absolutely beautiful high pressure weather morning and the skies were clear with a light breeze, just delightful. My suggestion for future development of the park would be to add a summer luge track. This would really enhance the excitement available for both guests and locals alike.

Nice drive to the top of the mountain. Took a lot of great pictures and just sat there for a while.

By KMD615 |

Great climbing and hiking with views that are pretty amazing. Well maintained. Try a trip at night to see the lights over the city.

Great area to relax or exercise all year round. If you like to view area from above this is it in central WI

By Barry K |

We only spent about 1 hour at this park, because I have an injured ankle and could only do limited walking. We appreciate that they had a $5 fee for 1 hour. It was worth driving up and sitting outside to enjoy the view.

By David H |

I've been collecting stamps/badges from every Wisconsin state park I enter. I walked several different trials throughout out the park, I stopped several time to take in the beautiful view, and so many trillium.

By miguelacho1 |

Go for the Fall colors! The views from the ski lifts are spectacular. The cleanliness of the park's facilities were especially appreciated during this pandemic.

Great Hiking trails and great skiing mountain. Can't get enough of this mountain in any season. Forest flowers, summer hiking falling leaves, and winter skiing! This is a destination for you alone, with a friend or lover, or with a family!

By Elizabeth B |

A trail for all levels of fitness. Challenging trails are optional-but you are pretty much going to take some hills. You can get a day pass for a few dollars or just hike up the mountain and turn around at the entrance. Favorite place in the area!

By ellen j |

great views from the top - worth the climb! loved the big rocks too. just pick a clear day for your trip - lots of places to hike too

By Bethany B |

I like to park at the bottom of the hill and walk all the way to the top of the tower. It is great exercise and the breeze at the top of the tower is nice in summer. The trails are nice too. Beautiful place.

By P. Joby P |

I primarily know this as a ski resort from my college days at UWSP. Probably one of the only major hills in WI to ski on, however, makes for a nice day out in the summer.

By VAtraveller_11 |

This may be the closest good skiing to Milwaukee and Chicago. People often pass it by without realizing that.

By Kaelyn S |

Go visit. Just do it. Beautiful trails and views. Well kept while still being very natural. I only wish some of the trails didn't have the asphalt poured, most of them don't but I'm always sad when I see that. It actually makes it harder to hike.

By Isabella S |

It was amazing the tower is really tall the nature is beautiful. You have to wear long everything or you will get ticks.

By Debby K |

After driving past for over 20 years we finally stopped to see what it was all about. So glad we did! We only bought the 1 hour pass thinking we wouldn't need to stay longer. We Could easily spend 1/2 day just taking in all it's beauty. Recommend staying until it gets dark to see the view of Wausau at night. Dog and kid friendly. Wisconsin does a great job with their state parks. We will definitely be stopping here again soon. Bring a better camera than the one on a phone.

By Anne W |

Lots of things to see and do on top of Rib Mountain.. Hiking the trails, climbing the observation tower, picnicking, and just enjoying the bounty given to us to enjoy.. Plus it helps the kids sleep better at night, all that fresh air and exercise!

By Marcia S |

We enjoyed the hiking and scenic views. We especially loved going in the fall and taking the ski chairlift. The view was beautiful. Even the drive was lovely. This year we were there in September but when we did the ski "ride" was the year before.

By GraciePitt1013 |

Hiked the red, blue, and green trails. Trails not always well marked, which can cause you to get turned around. You'll see lots of trees but on a good portion of the red trail you can't even look at these because you need to keep your eyes on the ground to be sure to avoid stumbling over embedded rocks. You do get a workout on the trails and if that's what you've come for, you're set because there aren't very many viewpoints unless you climb the lookout tower. All in all, not a park I'd visit again, If you want a variety of hiking options at a state park with some outstanding views, try Devil's Lake.

By PMG1971 |

I am a sucker for scenic overlooks, and this park has a great one. Don't care what you else do here, but you have to climb the observation tower. That is if you love a great view as much as I do. If hiking is you thing, there are three trail dating from the CCC days. You'll get a good workout scrambling over the rocky trails that cover the southern slope of this prominence. If you like skiing, visit in winter and hit the north side slopes.

By Cee D |

This is a beautiful state park, especially in the Fall. There are plenty of hotels and restaurants in the area.

By bikerchickhpp |

This is an all season place to enjoy. We are so blessed to have this in Wausau. So many things to enjoy. Beautiful place.

By Becki C |

We like to take a break up at Rib Mountain State Park with the kids. There is an entry fee since it is a state park. There are multiple hiking trails and an easy to climb observation tour. In the fall, they operate a chair lift from the bottom which is beautiful, but I would recommend not getting off at the top and instead riding back down. Drive up to the park instead. We waited on hour just to get back down using the chair lift. You would look to spend about 1-2 hours here for a family visit.

By Kathleen1abbott |

Between water views comfort and air that you can breath it was beautiful. It's worth traveling to see and I travers 38 miles

By rschmidt46 |

My wife and I drove to the farthest parking lot and went up to the top of the observation tower. The view is spectacular. We went there shortly before sunset as one of the last activities on our vacation before heading home. It was a warm day and with the breeze it felt very pleasant and peaceful. Rib Mountain used to offer camping but I believe this ended not longer after Wisconsin outsourced its camping reservation system to a company that made camping for Wisconsin residents a hassle. As a result, I think Rib Mountain is not as popular a destination as it deserves. We should have seen a lot more people on a beautiful Saturday afternoon/evening enjoying the highest point in Wisconsin at sunset.

By emped0cles |

We held our family reunion at Rib Mountain and it was absolutely fantastic. Granted the weather was perfect for a cool fall day, but the facilities at the park were wonderful. My kids and I had a blast climbing on the rock foundations and we even visited the chair lift for a calming ride down, then up the mountain side. The walk up to the top of the observatory was well worth the breathtaking view. During the visit, we grabbed a few picnic tables to eat lunch and they were placed close enough to the parking lot and facilities to make them very convenient. Parking also wasn't an issue as we all were able to meet at the same lot.

By kim k |

We make the trip every year in the fall to ride the ski lift and look at the beautiful fall colors. Once you get to the top there is plenty of trails to walk on and a little snack shop. There are also picnic tables if you would like to bring your own snacks. I would recommend this to everyone!

By docrockaud |

Beautiful setting for a wedding. The overlook near the park entrance is a great place to relax, peer onto someone's ceremony, or look at the beautiful colors. Was lucky enough to see it in fall. The hike up the mountain is STEEP and windey; I'd rather drive up, pay or use the park sticker, then explore inside. Plenty of parking. Worth visiting if you're in Wausau.

By Lynne F |

I hiked about four miles along the trails and the scenery was beautiful! I would definitely like to come back and do more hiking sometime.

By 181lori |

Every Fall the chairlifts are in full force to take you up the hill and down to experience the fall colors. The lines are really long at the bottom.....try going where the chairlifts go down and you will wait 1/2 as long. Go up the tower to see the whole Wausau area. During the winter.....of course ski and snow board until the cows come home.

By Jeneen W |

The view from the top of Rib Moutain is worth the drive up. Climb the tower to get above the tree-tops. Boulders abound and are generally easy climbs and great for keeping kids active (just don't let them go on the ones that have drop-offs or that are too high for YOUR comfort!). You can hike the numerous trails that circle the top of the hill...and now, you can even go out to the old quarry on the western side of the park. Trails are great year round (snow-shoe trails appear in the winter).

By handymantulsa |

Great place to view the city in summer and fall and ski in Winter. Pricing is not cheap to ski but where is it? Not much offered but a fun outing at the least.

By Michelle C |

Rib Mountain State Park is a beautiful area. There is a side walk/trail that leads you up from the foot all the way to the summit. In the fall, the scenery is breathtaking. There is a food counter open during the summer months and vending machines are available. There are about a gazillion walking paths and trails on both sides of the mountain. It's easy to spend a whole day up here and not even realize it. The sunsets are gorgeous. Be careful around the summit trails, though. The rocks can be a bit tricky. Have fun!

By Linda2981208 |

We camped out here. We have also drove our snowmobiles through the park. In the summer they have bands playing at the top of the Mountain now. It is a fun walk and you can see forever.

By Raymond G |

Wonderful walking trails and nice observation tower that gets above the trees. Eagles and many birds seen. A great place to go for peaceful contemplation.

By jnobz |

The first time we visited, we drove up to the park. There is an entrance fee and there are a couple of options. One side of the park has several hiking trails, some more challenging than others (up and down a bit) but none very difficult. There are nice views of the area and of Wausau. It's seems very popular and there is a walking trail up to the park, about 2 miles I think, that is also very popular.

By Michael K |

Great little hikes on the top of the mountain that lets you scramble on rocky outcrops and dells. Some aerobic sections if you pick the trails with more elevation.

By Susan D |

We were in town for a conference and drove to the state park for a hike. We walked up the tower for the view. The fall colors were just starting. We are so lucky to have such wonderful state parks! We would like to go back to hike, camp, and ski in the winter! We really enjoyed Wausau and it's downtown area!

By Mark E |

I recently spent part of a Saturday at Rib Mountain State Park in Wausau. I was spending a day in Wausau en route to Michigan's U.P., and this was a great way to spend some time! This was another beautiful state park in Wisconsin, and I enjoyed doing some hiking throughout the park. Rib Mountain is one of the highest points in Wisconsin, so it was fascinating to see some of the nearby landmarks from this high vantage point. I enjoyed going to the top of the observation tower, and you can make out downtown Wausau from up there, as well as the Wisconsin River, industrial park, several farms in the distance, and more. There are also some interesting rock formations throughout the park. I enjoyed the "Queen's Chair" rock formation. I only had a few hours to spend here, but I could see spending a whole day here with all there is to see and do. This was also a rather easy drive from the city, and the signs made it easy to find. It seems that this is a popular destination for skiing in the winter months, too! I had a great time, and I would recommend checking out Rib Mountain State Park!

We took a motorcycle ride to see the fall colors and walk through the park to ride and also ride the ski lift. We were stopped at the top and asked to turn around as we were told that there were so many people in the park that they were closing it down for an hour. We turned around and went back down to go to Granite Peak only to be told that they had just shut the lift down at 4 p.m., about 15 minutes prior - the time it took us to drive from the top all the way down. They turned us away then we seen the "Paradise Limo Coach" and the bride and whole wedding party with guests all getting on the lift. Very disappointing!! We now knew why the park had shut down and the lift. Money talks and they were catering to weddings in the park. We had taken the weekend drive to take in the fall colors to go to the park and also ride the lift and it all revolved around these weddings, we seen 3 brides and their parties with guests getting out of a school bus, a small white coach and the large limo coach. Nice advertising!! What a joke. We weren't the only unhappy people!! There were many other bikes and other cars that had to turn around at the top. We later knew it revolved around wedding parties below being married in the park. We thought about being "on the bride's side" and the other cars and people said they'd be on the groom's.... What a waste - many people could've enjoyed the park and the ski lift.

Beautifully wooded state park with unique rock formations begging to be climbed, offers a panoramic view to the north of the "Gateway to Wisconsin's Northwoods". Observation tower to climb, multiple picnic areas and hiking trails. Area granite boulders and rocks line the well manicured, paved road to the park. Fall ski lift rides at adjacent Granite Peak Ski Area offer stunning views of autumn color. Easy access off US Highway 51/39.

By Jamie R |

Had a great day hiking the trails. Observation tower was fun to climb. Kids really liked all the Pokemon in the park. 👍🏻

By Linda H |

We had some extra time and decided to stop at the park and see what it was all about. We were only there for 2 hours and could easily spent the day exploring. It was beautiful and so peaceful. Looks like they have a really nice ski area there...hard to tell in September but it looked promising. We plan to go back again.

By 788Pamela_O_12 |

Nice views, small area, but still relaxing. Liked climbing to the the top of the fire tower and getting a birds eye view of the area. It will be beautiful come Fall. Park staff was very friendly.

By Maks37 |

One of the highest points in Wisconsin, beautiful scenery year round. Try taking the chairlifts in the fall for a spectacular view of the surrounding area and fall color!

By Amy P |

in October we went to rib Mount to ride the chairlift to see the Fall colors beautiful. everyone should do this

By LaurelG |

You really must visit Rib Mountain i Wausau. WI! The park is beautiful. We took the ski lift and that was fabulous to see the fall colors and the beauty of it all

By prettylillies99 |

We heard this was a beautiful park. The entrance was closed so we couldn’t buy a ticket. The observation tower was closed. We were able too go look by the ski hill. Beautiful view.

By Joel W |

While traveling thru we decided to explore Rib Mountain. 3rd highest peak in WI. It offers some breath taking views and many trails to walk. It's a must if you're in the area.

By Derek B |

We enjoyed the large boulders to climb and hike on as well as the amazing views from the tower. We have been here many times. We enjoy the fall color views and nice picnicking.

By Morcella |

This is a boulder lovers paradise! I love big rocks... Nice for photos. The viewing tower is 96 steps up and the view is panoramic! Many nice hiking trails.

By Captain Reverb |

I grew up here in Wausau and have been visiting Rib Mountain occasionally over the last 58 years. This park never ceases to be incredible. I always find something out about it that's interesting. I have never failed to have a great time on the hill.

By Woodshopgirl14 |

I always love spending time on the trails on the south side of the mountain, hiking from the bottom part of the road all the way to the top and back down.

By mvoeg731 |

Go for a hike, look over the city, climb the tower and watch the sun set. Lots of options to get in a bit of exercise or just relax and take in the scenery.

By Anna L |

Great place to go on a walk/run. Lots of paved trails so it's stroller friendly. There's a giant wooden tower you can climb and get a great view. There's also a small playground.

By Dancer54401 |

A beautiful park in our backyard offering trails to hike, biking, music, snowshoeing, and camping. We had a family wedding there as well overlooking the city with beautiful fall colors. Great times, every time.

By Serenitee911 |

I enjoy walking up to Rib Mountain State Park. There is a parking lot at the bottom of the hill. You can park there and walk up. It is about a 5 mile walk up and back and usually takes about an hour and half. When you get to the very end of the road at the top there is a fire tower you can climb (99 steps) that has a very beautiful view of the surrounding area. There are also more trails around the peak if you would prefer to walk in the woods. FYI- If you drive to the top you will have to pay an entrance fee to the state park. I believe it is $10 for the day if you do not have a state park sticker.

By neil s |

Easy drive to summit, cheap fee to walk about and the views are breathe taking! Helpful staff at welcome center.

Exactly what I hoped for!

Awesome!

By sunsetbay2016 |

We were hoping to ride the ski lift while viewing fall colors but they were not operating until later that day. Check times before you go. We climbed the observation tower and were glad we did. Great views.

By SenCrow |

Rib Mountain State Park is literally minutes from Wausau, Schofield, Rothschild, and Weston, and maybe 15 minutes from Mosinee and the Central Wisconsin Airport. It is the perfect spot for relaxing and kicking off anxiety and worry.

One can find a private spot to meditate, or spectacular views to drink in God's creation. Parking is abundant and there are miles of hiking trails. Bicyclists and hikers can park at the bottom of the road leading to the park and pedal or hoof it up the two-mile road.

Great escape. Make it!

By hend6 |

There isn't much to be said that hasn't already been said here. So what I will add is that, for $7 you can park near the summit for the day. I would extremely highly recommend going up on the tower on a clear-sky night with a full moon out. The way it illuminates the landscape, in addition to the lights of the city, is perhaps the most beautiful thing I have seen in the Wausau area. Absolutely wonderful place to take a romantic partner to!

By Brinkman107 |

Rib Mountain is basically right in Wausau, but on top, you really don't feel close to the city at all. There are plenty of hiking trails that offer great views, especially off the south side of the hill. You can walk up the observation tower to get a good 360 degree view of central Wisconsin. If you want a good workout, you can always walk or run up the ski slopes to the top, which is a favorite activity of mine.

By Ellen H |

Rib Mountain State Park's beauty captures the joy of the seasons! Great photo opportunities, the photos I was able to capture are awesome, so I am told! (Especially in the fall with its wonderful fall foliage). In the fall, for a small fee, you can ride the ski lift and view the colors from above! The hiking trails provide opportunity to see the beauty of Wisconsin at its finest while at the same time giving you a good workout! A great place to have a picnic, enjoy family time and being one with nature! If you are in the right place, you can even spot some wildlife in the woods!

By TrevorPresley |

Located just 4 miles from downtown Wausau you'll find the excellent Rib Mountain State Park. Lots of views to be found here with many wild animals to watch out for while hiking up the 2000ft mountain. An ideal location for winter skiing. Officially the highest point in the whole state of Wisconsin with views of over 50 miles away. Many hours of enjoyment can be had here.

By Candace C |

We stopped here on our way to stay in Wausau. What a gorgeous area. We did walk part of trail and just thought that it was great with so many walking areas.

By Kevin K |

Only Rib Mountain can show people the wonderful colors of the fall. Grab a sandwich and a soda and just spend a day viewing the colorful leaves.

By Rodney B |

Went here and hiked with a friend. Great trails. Open until 11pm and almost empty at night. There was a nominal fee to enter. Worth the stop to get some hiking in. Will come back!

By Wausau_WIWapper |

Park has changed remarkably the past five years from the new roads and walking paths to the recently completed ranger station. We always park at the base of the hill and walk up to the main entrance. There is a fee to enter in a vehicle but no charge to walk in. We walk for the exercise not to avoid the fee however. I don't know how many miles of internal trails there are precisely, but at least 12. Many of the trails have vistas and other points interests like rock formations and an observation tower. During the summer months the snack bar is open at the top of the mountain. Its not bad and diffinately cheap on the snacks. If you go bring some bottled water. Getting water up there has been hit and miss. Some of the fountains didn't work and the vending machines can struggle with dollar bills.

By Myrla M |

I was here in June drove to the top section, and then hiked with my dog to the top about .5 mile - it was a great way to spend a Saturday.

By Lsm47990 |

Beautiful views of the Wausau area. Fun hiking trails with cool rock formations. We had our dog with us. Dogs are permitted in the park, on leash. Dogs are not permitted on the fire tower.

By ingenueangel |

The hiking trails are short and the park was deserted, which was nice. But, the trails do not offer great views, just hum drum looking. Drove 15 minutes out to the Dells of the Eau Claire River Park and that was WAY BETTER!

By Terrence S |

My son and I have visited Rib Mountain 4 times over the years. You can drive to the top, and an observation tower offers an even better view. I have been to the Ozarks, Appalachians, and the Rockies. Though not as large as any of those mountains, Rib Mountain is worthy of being called a Mountain, as it is about 900 feet higher in elevation than the Wisconsin River, which is only about 5 miles away. The view is spectacular, and it is worth the trip.

By Alan E |

The view from the tower is awesome and we had a great time going on all the hiking trails This is a must see when the fall colors are out.

By dr_foucault |

Passing through the area we stopped to check out the park. If you want to hike up you can park and do so. Or if you choose to drive you have the option. We drove to the top. Nice facilities. Lookout tower was kept well and had great views. Near the tower are bolders the kids enjoyed climbing on.

By heinzandmary |

Hiking trails are great, with lots of rocks for the kids to climb all over. Observation tower is great with nice view. Wintertime, the park sits atop the Granite Peak Ski area which has been rated as the best in the midwest!

By Jason M |

The fall colors lift ride was a great experience. Not much fall color when we went but the ride was fun to experience. At the top of the lift is Rib Mnt. State Park. Park has a lot of nice trails to hike and a mountain tower to climb for some really nice views of the area. Highly recommend to visit!

By Mark J |

Located in the heart of the Wausau area, Rib Mountain State Park is a four season outdoor playground. Skiing (Granite Peak Ski Area) and snowshoeing in the winter and hiking, biking in the other three seasons. There are several parking lots, a concession stand and plenty of picnic tables. The hiking trails have various lengths and difficulties. The Yellow Trail is the most demanding.

By farmbrough |

The park is set in a small wooded granite mountain surrounded by forests, farmland, small settlements and the city of Wausau. The mountain itself has many prepared trails and climbing paths, but the large rocks at the top are also climbable. There is a viewing platform at the summit, but even if one does not climb the sixty feet needed to get to the top of this, there are spectacular views to be had from the rock itself.

A snack and souvenir kiosk and lavatorial facilities make this a great place to spend a few hours.

By TravelingHwarang |

This is the 3rd highest peak in WI. However, it has the appearance of the highest. You can see Rib Mountain from over 20 miles away in some directions (from the west for sure) and over 40 miles away from a fire tower near Tomahawk. It also contains the longest downhill ski runs in the state - about 800 vertical feet.

I visited this park numerous times when I lived in Wausau and still do when I'm visiting. I used to run up it regularly, also because it's a good endurance test and it's such a peaceful place. After I moved from the area a new and improved road and paved trail were built all the way to the top.

Often locals park their cars at the bottom to walk up. Some of us try biking - another great workout with a fast coast on the way down. The views are great! The trails are enjoyable. For being right in the heart of Wausau, the park stays relatively quiet - good thing. Even when it is busy it is not overwhelming. If it feels that way, get out on a trail on the southern exposure. You should climb the observation tower. The view is one of the better ones in the midwest. Even the views that are not from the tower are pretty amazing.

Weddings have been held up there - but some have gotten very chili because it's colder up there than at the bottom. There should still be a little snack shop. You can camp there, also. Independence Day advice: don't go up there to watch the fireworks. You end up higher than them and far away, so you don't get much of the effect of them.

You need to pay a fee if you don't have a WI state park pass - unless you walk or bike in.

Overall, I highly suggest taking at least an hour or two to explore and relax up there. Enjoy the view!

By Denis K |

It was a blustery, mid-October day and rain was just moving out when we visited, but leaf color was at peak which made it very worth while. There are trails for all ranges of energy levels and those we saw were paved. Very unique rock formations make it one-of-a-kind. The concession stand was open, with highly appreciated hot chocolate and cider to warm up with. 60 foot observation tower. Great place for kids (and young at heart of all ages), photography, and enjoying the outdoors. Comfortable walking shoes recommended.

By GSMkj |

We traveled to Wausau to see the fall colors but got surprised by some early season snow! The state park was great to explore with our young children! The ski hill on the side of it is weird, but the view is amazing!

By laimtxuj1 |

Great view to the city of Wausau. Observation Tower is high but not high enough. Great for quick visit.

By Robert L |

This is a favorite of many in the area, if just for a afternoon walk or hike, or a trip up the observation tower to see for miles and miles around. Fall season offers ski lift rides to see the awesome array of colors as well.

My college roommate recommended I check out this park on my way through Wausau. I had to pay the out-of-state day rate ($11). I drove to the area with the observation tower. It is located near the highest point and offers a great view of the surrounding area. Recent Canadian wildfires have given the area a hazy view, but it would be fun to see on a clear day. There are so many marked trails on the map but I didn't have time to check them out.

This park has got some of the most beautiful views anywhere. There is a tall observation tower, and many sites to see.Hiking trails abound at the beautiful park.Something for everyone. The autumn colorama is quite spectacular.

By OnTheRoad73a |

Had a wonderful weekend ski getaway. All the runs and lifts were open- which was nice. Lifts weren't too crowded and the hills were well groomed. The check in line experience could be shortened. We stood in line for over and hour to get hill tickets- the slow part of the process was signing the liability form by all members of the party. Many groups in front of us had trouble as members of their group were not there in line and had to be retrieved from the parking lot or bathrooms- this happened over and over and slowed everyone down. I have never had the additional form to fill in at other Wisconsin ski hills. I thought that risk was assumed with the purchase of the ticket or so it also says on the lift ticket itself so not certain the need for this delay.

Great place to wander and enjoy nature. Watch the local media to find out when they offer the free color tour in the fall!

By Sandy |

Beautiful park, lots to see and view is absolutely gorgeous in fall. Tower was fun to climb. Will go back!!!

By Jacques A |

Stopped there for hiking and taking in the view. Nice well marked trails, with varied lengths. Some are more difficult with rocks to climb over. Great views of the surrounding area. They do not offer camping at this park.

By Kevin D |

Great hiking trails, there are easy trails even for the smaller kids to some quite difficult ones for even the most seasoned hiker! Beautiful views from every direction Easy to get to, right off the interstate.

By William S |

Great State Park for hiking, picnicking, weddings, concerts in the clouds, pictures, snowshoeing and fall colors from the lookout tower and vulture trail. Easy access off of !-39.

By DaleVC54401 |

I try to get here once or twice a year just so I can walk the gorgeous paths around the top of the mountain. They have them marked very well and with an occasional map for reference. The granite formations around the mountain are spectacular. If you walk far enough to the west, you will come across the old red granite quarry. This is one of the places were they mined the famous Wausau Red Granite. My understanding is that the original Wausau Red Granite has been all used up and is no longer available.
During the warmer months, there is a concession/snack shop at the top.

My son and I went on the ski lift to see all the beauty around us. It was truly amazing. The colors and just the enjoyment of going on a beautiful fall day was great. We got off on top and walked around also which then we even climbed up the tower there, breathtaking is the best to describe it all.

By Scott S |

Rib Mountain State Park is great for hiking with unique natural rock formations and beautiful vistas. The observation tower allows you to see for miles and get a "lay of the land". There is no camping since the campground was remove a few years ago which is unfortunate.

By Todd H |

Great day at the park, colors not in full color but was a great day for hike about the park. Lifts were operating for a nice relaxing ride.

By Sharon Rayborn |

The trip on the ski lift is so much fun for family members of any age. The fall colors are beautiful. My grandchildren loved riding the ski lift.

By Livin' Life |

In the summer, the mountain is a wonderful get away. The hiking trails are well-marked and other great variety in difficulty level. If a casual stroll through the woods is what you wish, it's here. If you wish a challenge with a bit more distance, it's here. The tower holds memories from 30 years ago. A climb to the top as a teen from out of town during the Wisconsin Valley Fair to sharing this experience with my own children, the experience is incredible! Sharing "The Queens Chair" (a large rock on which the kids can climb) with grandma from England has power:)
Unfortunately, the beauty of the "park" has been diminished with the development of the ski hill. You can, however, escape the eyesore as you venture deeper into the park. The ski lifts do offer an asset in the fall as you ride to the top, surrounded by autumn colors.

By Molly S |

Had an hour of downtime while in the area, so stopped by. Climbed to the top of a lookout tower and enjoyed the beautiful views. Wish we would have had more time to explore the trails. Enjoyed the authentic down-home gift shop. Cheapest entry fee option is $5 per car, which wasn't too much of a bother, but it would have been nice if it was free!

By Ashley G |

This park is always beautiful and well-maintained. It is nice for either a drive up or a walk at the paved path. The views are breathtaking

By William J |

we went for a nice drive through the park and stopped and walked. Went out to the lookout which has great views of the surrounding area. Very beautiful.

By bigheadtom |

I took the family over winter break, and the weather was tough with the temps warming up to -5. However the resort is quaint, and inviting with a good menu selection. It is clearly posted that crock pots are not allow; this must be a Wisconsin thing. The terrain was as good as it get in the midwest, and I would put in on par with Lutsen resort. They have a couple of high speed lifts which helps with the lift lines.

By mmd19691007 |

If you enjoy hikes, bikes, snow shoeing or skiing; you have found the right place. Excellent views of the Wisconsin River valley. It has handicap accessibility and the fall foliage can be seen by chairlift on certain days.

By JDevlee |

This is really a cool park to check out if you're ever in the area. I've lived in Wausau about 7 years and I always enjoy walking around Rib Mountain. The fall color ski lift rides are also pretty cool. They have those for 2 weekends around October 1st.

By Terri D |

The view is spectacular. It was so beautiful to see skiers and snowboarders enjoying such an amazing place.

By Jayfromwisc |

Superb trails with good options for length, will want to come back when warmer and do trails we missed.

By 601heather |

Beautiful park, well maintained. Romantic setting for sunsets! Highly recommend any time of year. Extra beautiful in the fall.

By MedicAsh |

I love the fact that you can get out of town and find peace and quiet along with the beauty of nature in a very short distance. There are great hiking trails and lots of beauty. If you take the time to climb the tower you can see for what feels like miles. You can also see into Wausau which is really cool. Even if you just want to get away from the hustle and bustle this is a great place to go. One last thing, they have an area there where you can have weddings and it makes for a wonderful outdoor wedding!! It is a place to go see!

By Paula H |

Beautiful scenery and lots to do. They have concession stand and ski lift. Definitely recommend this place!

By BobK1256 |

Zero wasn't an option. I wasn't able to enter with my federal lifetime pass. Many, many state, county, etc. locations accept this pass. Interestingly, Rib Mountain removes all Google 2 or lower reviews to keep their ratings up.

By zeffantm |

Our first surprise was seeing the paved parking path adjacent to the park entry road. What a great thing for the locals to have available!
Next we were pleasantly surprised to see the ski area and its runs (even though it was summer). We will likely return for some skiing one of these winters.
The observation tower is much higher than the ones at Blue Mound State Park and you can see for a LONG ways up there!
We walked the blue path and were happy to see it was paved. That certainly helps cut down on the encroachment of the woods and likely hood of picking up ticks.

By Njb123 |

With living in Wausau my whole life, I took Rib Mountain State Park for granted... It is absolutely gorgeous and if you're in the area, I would definitely check it out!

By Northwoodswis |

If you have a state park sticker it is worth the drive up the mountain. There is a climbing tower and lots of hiking trails. Take the trail to the quarry- it is a mile or two back in the woods but it is a hidden gem of the park.

By sajjuly |

Camping along with picnicking and hiking are offered. Just a short distance form the city of Wausau.

By barretta |

A friend said we had to drive to the lookout if we were going to be in Wausau, and we did. Nice trails, Clean park. Good parking areas. Beautiful views. Helpful Ranger at the entry.

By QCWilly |

I love visiting this place. Along with great trails and hiking there are wonderful Geocaches. If you don't know what that is then Google it.

More important than this is to go to the top and look at the rocks and realize that they once were at three bottom of the sea.

By Kate K |

This park has many fun trails to explore, the view from the lookout is fabulous, we visited in late fall and are looking forward to returning in the spring, entrance fees are very reasonable.

By niecechicago |

Great skiing and snowboard but it is pricy. Cascade Mountain is close but not many runs. Less expensive

By Pinkus |

This is a great place for hiking. It's a big hill, so you can start at the bottom and walk up for free, or you can drive to the top and pay a fee to park inside. Miles of trails to go on. It's very fun to go when it's foggy. When it's clear, you can see long distances.

By LouBelle59 |

We rode to Wausau and visited Rip Mountain on July 2nd. We bought the day pass and it was pretty reasonable. The views from up there are beautiful. Roads could use a fixing up but other than that. Lots of trails if your in the mood to walk them. Views from the observation deck was gorgeous. Will do this again.

By amygulsvig |

The mountain is great to see in all seasons. Our favorite is the Autumn Chair lift ride where you can see all the beautiful autumn colors over the entire area. We pack a lunch and eat at the top and do a bit of exploring before making our way back down.

By MIFire |

I grew up in this area so I really enjoy the opportunity to see the area from the viewing tower. Nice area for a lunch with the family. Some walking trails in the area and some small rock formations to climb on. Bring the camera as there are some great locations for family photos. Nice and close to the city.

By JulieABentley |

We visited the state park by car taking the road all the way up to the highest places and back down again. It was surreal realizing how high we were on the mountain and seeing the skiiers. Amazing experience.

By Gina W |

On Oct 4th we went up the chair lift to look at the colors Beautiful would do it again but show up early because if you don't it will have a long line on a nice day

By csanders810 |

The trails have wonderful views. Be careful of the rocks. If not stable on your feet, may not be ideal. Walking on the road is fine too. Wish I could be there to ski! It is expensive to visit and $11 pp to ride the ski lift is ridiculous in the off season. No trash cans.

By Daniel J |

Since we travel with an 80lb dog, we are always on the lookout for dog-friendly trails and Rib Mountain has a selection of trails to accommodate every hiker or walker. We only had a couple of hours, so we arrived mid-morning and spent most of our time on the Blue trail. It was quiet and peaceful. While we were there, we saw only a few hikers and perhaps 10-20 cars in the parking lot. I don't recall seeing any poop bag dispensers, so remember to bring your own.

By ALG1603 |

We drove to the top parking lot, and hiked the yellow trail and the red/quarry trail. The yellow trail is around 4.5 miles long - and has some good up and down sections. The red/quarry trail was gorgeous. It was around 2 miles, and the views and scenery were fantastic. The trails on the red/quarry trail were tougher - more strenuous, more rocks, slippery packed snow sections, and lots of leaves covering rocks and steps and holes. Be careful, step carefully, look around for the trail markers and have fun. It's beautiful. The tower was closed, but there's so much else to see.

By AlumniGuy |

Stopped by here on my way out of town after a meeting and spent an hour strolling the trails and enjoying some amazing views.

This is a gem of a park and I highly recommend it. Be sure to ascend the observation tower and check out some if the cool rock formations in that area.

I saw several deer, hundreds of chipmunks, and a few wild turkeys. Go in the fall and enjoy the incredible fall colors.

By Allen B |

As an avid biker and in the Wausau area, I rode up Rib Mountain. Very nice park with great views. Lotof hiking trails too.

By Patrick M |

I have lived at the base of Rib Mountain for 14 years and have hiked the north and south sides frequently. It is beautiful and offers great exercise. If you want rigorous exercise, hike the yellow trail on the south side. For less rigorous, but equally beautiful hiking, try the north side. On either side, you can get 4+ miles. I don't snow shoe, but friends tell me Rib is great for that in the winter. And Granite Peak Ski Area is wonderful in winter on the north side.

I checked the "solo" option, but have hiked as a couple and even a few times with kids.

Wausau has some amazing things to do and Rib Mountain is high on the list.

By Janet W |

When I went to Rib Mountain, we drove up the mountain, but they do have an excellent, paved walking path. The ski lifts were not operational as skiing season was over, but the facility and equipment looked good. It's a beautiful area and more to explore, when I get the time!

By Patrat2000 |

Nothing to dislike, it is a state park. Appreciate the beauty, Treat it as if it was your own. I loved it. and always will.

By Wendy K |

We visited for the first time today and Rib Mountain did not disappoint. There are plenty of trails to walk/hike. There is a nice tall observation tower which provided a beautiful view of the leaves and city. We paid the $18 to take the chair lift up and down the mountain. Next time our trip will start at Granite Peak. We started at Rib Mountain because we had not done research ahead of time to find out there was a chair lift. Beautiful start park, this will be an annual tradition for us from now on. While visiting Rib Mountain, grab a bite to eat at the Breakfast Bear, absolutely fantastic food!

By RobD1969 |

Riding the ski lift in the fall is always a great experience. Walking around and viewing the fall colors is great.

By 545debrah |

What a treat! Wonderful hiking trails that were not only beautiful but easy walking. The rocks were a real treat for the kids to climb on. We climbed to the top of the tower and was able to see for miles. A definite to go back.

By Lucky V |

Great place for the family any time of year. What a jewel to have in our backyard. Ski hills in the winter and picnicking in the summer. So much to do and see. Fun thing to do is to park at the bottom of the hill in Rib Mountain and walk up the hill and picnic on top (saves you parking fees too). Or park below the ski hills and walk up the hills to do the same as well... this is more of a hike. Bring your hiking stick and boots and bug spray. Lol. Check it out for yourself!

By kelly b |

Whether you want a picnic lunch, hiking, biking, or for the kids to play, this is beautiful, serene, and everything you can ask for in a park. Get the year long pass and go every week!

By bverbos |

Rib Mountain is conveniently located right off I-41 in Wausau. The park sits on a large granite mountain (1920' elevation) and features very pretty 360" views. The are a variety of hiking trails, the most popular ones roughly paved with asphalt. There are concessions available during summer months, and Granite Peak Skiing during winter.

By 2gothere |

We visited on a warm day but were charmed by the trails. Most are in the woods and well marked. There rocky spots that kids were climbing all over. The view up high was great as it was very clear. There is plenty of parking. Would definitely recommend if you are in this area. It can be a quick visit or long depending on what you have the time for.

By CindyBraatz |

Nice place for hiking and walking around. The tower is fun to climb to the top and look at the views and see how many places you can recognize.

By SeniorTravelerTF |

Unless you are from Nebraska don't be fooled into thinking this is a mountain. Less than 2,000 feet. And it is not the scenic wonder that the convention and visitor's bureau proclaims. First of all the only way to really see the surrounding area from the top is if the observation tower is open. It was not the week we went. So we hiked the top trying to find a view, and the only open view down was looking over the city and the interstate - not the natural setting they advertise. A few nice short trails, but again, since you can't see out or through the forestation to what avail? Easy to get to, just off interstate, but recommend Timm's Hill, the highest spot in Wisconsin, for a view of surrounding area and colors in the fall Timm's Hill is about 45 minutes northwest. Rib Mountain is either the second of third highest spot in the state, not known for mountains. Lots of picnic tables and area is well maintained. It is a state park so there is a minimal admission fee, but given huge cutbacks in budgets and fewer people using the parks there is rarely anyone checking passes or for that matter, to answer questions or be of assistance.

By JohnnyBoy J |

We stopped at Rib Mountain ski area, on Fall weekends you can pay to ride to the top of the mountain, hike around and ride back down. We may have been a little too early for Fall colors, but the views and vistas were breathtaking. The fee was $11./ person, well worth the it for the experience. The chair can handle up to 6 people so it's fun for couples or families.

Once on top we hiked around the area, climbed the rocks and the tower. The concession stand was open so we enjoyed some popcorn and drink as a break. Pets are welcome, at the top, not on the ride up, so you can always drive to the top and ride the lift down & up.

By EmilyOsness |

Not only is the state park a popular hiking mountain but it is quite the challenge. Once you get to the very top, the treetops are amazing. You can see all of Wausau up there.

By bill m |

Rib Mountain State Park has in effect been sold to a downhill ski resort owner and to communication tower companies. There were once two campground areas. both have been eliminated to make room for ski runs and towers. There are hiking trails but they are pooorly maintained, probably because of funding cuts to the State D.N.R. It's sad to see such a beautiful place, once intended to provide recreational opportunities for all citizens, especially those with limited incomes, be destroyed.

By Jilliebean |

Very pretty drive to see the fall colors. Too bad it was a gloomy day but it was well worth the drive up the mountain. On a clear day I imagine the views would be breathtaking

By Seth A |

Once you get past the fee at the gate (5 per hour per car- If you have out of state plates or 11 for the day) you will see a great place to connect with nature, and the rest of the people with nothing to do on the weekend. During the week, the traffic is a lot lighter and the park is much much quieter, but during the weekend, well it's the only place to be in marathon county. There is a concession stand at the top and a look out tower that provides a pretty breath taking 360 view- if you can make it, do it.

By 2paradise |

This is a beautiful park and easy to find. We visited in the fall and the foliage was brilliant. The fire tower was a fun climb. We also hiked a trail. (They are pretty well marked.) We observed many walkers and joggers on the asphalt sidewalks along the road.

By lucylizzie09 |

a 1 hour pass is 5.00 or 10.00 for the day lots of trails with great views plus a chairlift ride and a little snack shack

By E R |

We had an extra morning with not much to do and had to run off some of the food we ate and headed to the top of Rib Mountain. We live in Atl and trail run often and Rib Mountain ranks right up there with all the southern Appalachian trails. Rib Mountain trails are very very very rocky so be warned. I was worried my wife was gonna bail a bunch and it was me who nearly fell. Great trails and a great trail map. This area was part of the glacial ice age so you will see alot of cool smaller granite rock formations. Great ski hill as well for the midwest. I grew up skiing here and ski hard stuff out west and this is a great proving ground as well. $7 for an all day pass or $5 for 1 hour pass. Well worth it

By Kristine K |

Beautiful park anytime of the year. Even if you only drive thru. Nice hiking trails or you can walk along the road.

By tikidream |

Our friends live at the base of the mountain - they are so lucky! We hiked up to the top and the views are beautiful. The trails are well maintained and quiet. Just a lovely hike/day.

By StacyStenz |

This is my absolute favorite place to hike! It's a daily retreat for a busy mind, a moment in nature with movement and peace! So many trails or paved path, depending on your preference. On top, catch breath-taking views of all of Wausau.

By Diane S |

I visited this park on a beautiful winter day. The trees were covered with frost and were beautiful. There are couple of short trails at the top of the hill that are pretty to hike in the winter. There are nice views and you can see the skiers as they head down the hill. The longer trails head down the hill and back. The trails are pretty packed down in the winter from hikers so you don't even need snowshoes. This is a good place to take a break if you are travelling further north as it's easy to access off the highway.

By Mackenzie B |

If your going to go there a few things to keep in mind. Dress accordingly. It can be windy, and going up is okay but coming down is a bit cold. There is also starting and stopping during your transition going up and down, so don’t freak out! People need help getting on and off-which means it will stop for a few moments. They take cash and credit card. So if you get there and someone says cash only, don’t listen to them and find the office! They don’t know what the heck their talking about. If you want a direct answer walk up to the booth and ask the direct person whose taking the moola. Here’s the most important, although it might be a good idea, for a couple event, remember it’s $24 a couple for a 5 minute ride. OUCH. So for us we did it and will never do it again. I think personally I can gain more vibrant color site seeing on the ground in a car and on a country drive. Some of the pine trees up top obscure your view in both directions.
Also get there early! It opened at 11 and we got there a half hour later and had to wait in line for an hour! Plan to use a porta-potty because the lodge isn’t open.

By Jana W |

Walked up the new walking path today with the dog! What a great addition!

Rib Mountain State Park is a beautiful attraction, especially in autumn. Lovely to walk around and spend a day in nature.

By Jean C |

We went the first weekend of October and the colors were amazing. I wish we would have known about the chair lift and included it in our plans. We hiked about half of the yellow trail. Lots of people were in the park, but the park is big enough so it didn't feel crowded. Parts of the trail were exhausting (steep), but it was fun. The Quarry Trail was fun. We ate our sack lunch at the amphitheater. Truly amazing view. If you have the chance, follow up with Dells of the Eau Claire County Park in Aniwa (about 35 minutes away, but worth it. You will thank me.)

By IngaRose |

Walk up the observation tower and see a gorgeous view. Not a hard climb as it is designed to allow you to do it in stages so if you are mobile you can manage it. Nature at its best!

By HTCWI |

Rib Mountain State Park is a beautiful destination to visit any time of year while in central Wisconsin! The summer and fall are my favorites as there are trails to hike and beautiful trees to enjoy! Many improvements have been made in the last 3 years or so on the roads, parking, and other facilities. The look out towers provides and incredible view of the surrounding areas and the Wisconsin River Valley. Definitely check it out !!!!!

By Betty D |

I live near Rib Mountain State Park and always enjoy going there to--take visitors to the area, take pictures of the countryside below, take pictures up in the lookout tower, take pictures amongst the beautiful rock formations, go for hikes, hike over to the quarry, see the skiers having fun in the wintertime, take advantage of lovely music at Concert in the Clouds, or just plain lose myself and meditate amongst nature at its finest.

By Jaimy13 |

It is a great drive up the hill. There are awesome views from the observation tower. Hiking trials were good with pretty cool rock formations. There is a nice concession stand. We don't ski but the views from the ski lifts were outstanding.

By 167caribou |

This is a nice place to see the fall colors with lots of walking trails. not a lot of amenities but just a nice small state park.

By Russ V |

This is a pleasant place to spend the day. It is part of the Wisconsin State Park system so it does have an admission fee. It has a gorgeous view of the Wisconsin River Valley and a observation tower that is available to climb. It has a fantastic picnic area and a nice playground area. There are several miles of hiking available in the park. The access road is 2 miles long and a consistent 4% grade. It is popular with local hikers and bicycling enthusiasts. The park is host to a downhill ski area in the winter time.

By emholly |

No camping but excellent trails of varied difficulty. A cute little concession stand and an excellent observation tower with a superb view. Good parking and bathroom facilities.

By Jackiegh |

Nice hiking trails at any season. The tower gives a good panoramic view of central Wisconsin. The ski hill backs up to the park, snow shoeing and cross country skiing in the park.

By sjozhppy |

Great place to bring kids - there are hiking trails, playgrounds, and rocks to climb on. We also like hiking up the ski hill and up to the quarry. Very busy during fall colors, but absolutley beautiful. Great new trail alongside the road is always busy with walkers. Bike lane going up, too.

By alohagal1949 |

We just love to bring our out -of -area guests to Rib Mountain State Park and they are never disappointed. Years ago we hiked up and down the face of the mountain, but now since they built a new road with a wide sidewalk we park in the parking area at the base of the road and hike to the top. It's probably a good 2 mile walk but has woods on both side of the road with wildlife viewing. On top there's restrooms, water fountains, a snack shack with limited hours and 2 fantastic viewing areas. One is a 4 story tower that gives you a 360 degree view from the top. The other area is an impressive amphitheater that gives wonderful views of the city of Wausau. In the fall, the chair lifts are running for a couple weekends to see the fall colors which are stunning. Not sure if you need to pay an entrance fee when walking up the road. The path veers well to the left of the gatehouse and we follow that all the way up.

By wistraveler620 |

My friend was married in the Rib Mountain State Park Amphitheater. Beautiful views for the ceremony and wedding pictures. Please make sure to reserve the space ahead of time due to popularity.

By RibMountain60370 |

The best place to hike on Rib Mtn is the Turkey Vulture Trail off of Grouse Lane. Park at the end of the road and follow the signs. It would be a great place to camp or Mtn Bike but unfortunately these are not allowed. There are camping sites there just do not get caught by a warden. Also they will chase away Mtn Bikers with there four wheeler.

By Karen Z |

We thoroughly enjoyed the fall colors at the top of the mountain. The view of Wausau and surrounding area was spectular.

By Jay N |

As others have said the view is very beautiful especially in Fall when the color is amazing. It is a true delight to see how scenic and beautiful Wisconsin is. Even the city view makes a person give pause and consider living in this gem like area!

By TravelerG8 |

Went for a fall hike. Observation tower is closed but other facilities and trails are open for business. Winter looks like it would be a great spot for skiing since there are several chair lifts.

By CheeseheadsII |

Great family thing to do or couples. We rode the chair lift first which is $11 per person but there is a discount for seniors and its only $9. Check to see if they are open before you go, I think Oct. 14th and 15 might have been the last weekend. We got off on the wrong path and ended up driving to the top and riding down and back up but that was O.K. There were no lines at the top and your get a round trip ride anyway. Then we hiked around up at the top and walked up the tower, beautiful day for this kind of things.

By 2SlipperyEels |

This place is wonderful to visit. We had packed a picnic lunch & hiked through the trails. We climbed to the top "look out point" & you can view the city/area for miles--it's quite a sight to see. If you're looking for a family activity, check this place out. I bet it would be beautiful to hike through during the fall when the leaves are changing.

By romeofl |

We had a little extra time, so we took a walk with our dog thru the park. It is well marked. There a number of different trails. We had a great time.

By lindabWisconsin |

Beautiful view from the top of the lookout tower. I was there as the leaves were changing & it was georgeous. There were 3 couples a 12 & 4 yr old. They all loved climbing the rock formations, they do have miles of walking trails also. For a few weekends in the fall you can take a ride on the ski lift to look at the fall colors we did not do this. They do have a canteen & gift shop we had some brats & hot chocolates.

By Chris R |

If you want a great walk take the paved walking trail from the bottom of the hill. It is about a 2 mile walk from the bottom to the spectacular views of central Wisconsin from the many viewing areas.
For the more adventurous hike the many trails on the mountain or climb the wooden viewing tower.
Great adventure for anyone. Pets are also welcome.

By lpmiller2015 |

Rib Mountain State Park is located on one of the highest elevation points in Wisconsin. It is known for picnicing, hiking, and winter skiing. I am personally disappointed that Rib Mountain was developed into a ski hill, because the original family that owned it, donated it to the State as a beautiful natural and wildlife area. But skiers are happy to have a great place to downhill ski. We often go up Rib Mountain State Park in the Summer and Fall to hike, picnic and enjoy the beautiful Fall colors. The city of Wausau and surrounding areas below offers beautiful scenic views. During the summer, occasional concerts are given in the park. It is probably the biggest tourist attraction in the Wausau area. The ski area name has been re-named: "Granite Peak", so don't get confused; it's all part of the same area.

By Santos M |

Awesome place to nature walk..great for family's or couples..so much to see and do.. One of wausaus treasures

By chewbdu |

For me, this was a day-trip. You can drive to the top of Rib Mountain on a really nice paved road that weaves through the woods. Once at the top, you are treated to a spectacular view that goes as far as your eyes can see, overlooking Wausau and the surrounding area. I went int he fall so the color was pretty nice. There are numerous hiking trails or varying degrees - from really short and simple to longer and over more rugged terrain. There is an observation tower to climb if you want to get even higher. The rock formations used to have names, but the plaques have become weathered and the writing is gone. The only one still identifiable is the Queen's Chair. The huge rock formations are great to walk through and provide for some interesting pictures. There are picnic tables and grills. There are also bathrooms and adequate parking. Wouldn't recommend an RV in the busy summer since the parking lots are probably full. Nice place to see. Park sticker is required.

We visited the park on a Saturday to view the fall colors. Granite Peak the local ski resort does run a lift during the fall so that you can enjoy the trip up the mountain and see the colors - but there was a very long line so we just drove up to the top. There is a $8 per day fee for WI residents, $11 for our of state residents (with a $5 one hour pass that I don't recommend as it does not give you enough time to enjoy the park). There are several spectacular granite rock formations right near the parking lot that you can scramble on and an observation tower you can climb for great views. There are also extensive trails that give you a better experience and that pass more rock features that are well worth a hike. While busy - you can get away from the crowds pretty quickly on the trails. I would definitely visit here again

Stopped on our way to the north woods. Had hoped to hike and climb the observation tower. Climbed the tower, but it was just too chilly for some in our group to hike. The views from the tower are incredible and I really can't wait to go back and explore more of this gorgeous state park.

Me an my wife are not avid hikers, but this park could change all that. First off we're retired an in our mid 60's, used to flat land walking but not rock climbing. We did the gray trail because it hit all the highlights of the park and was billed as "relatively short." The trail was like no other we've ever walked. The trail took us down jagged rock steps an up rock formations, up steep inclines with some flat path area's. There are some overlooks with benches to stop an rest which we took advantage of. The trail was an absolutely fantastic experience. The "Relatively short" trail took us about three hours and fifteen minutes....so buy the day pass for $11. One hour pass is $5 if you want to just look around and not do a trail walk. Like I said, my wife an I aren't hikers, but we did the gray trail with very little difficulty. If you want fun and at least slightly challenging trails then I'd say Rib Mountain is just the ticket. We will go back!

Rib mountain is beautiful any time of year! In the fall, you can ride the ski lift to look at the colors. In the winter, you can ski. In the spring and summer, you can picnic, hike, or just take in the view!

The weather wasn't great - cold, rainy, windy August day - but we still adventured up Rib Mountain! Did the blue trail with a 3 1/2 year old and two 65+ adults and it was a lot of fun! Would suggest a walking stick for anyone who has some balance or leg issues - but go slow and it is a nice hike! No mosquitoes as it was too cold for them - so actually a perfect hiking day! No matter when you visit Rib Mountain offers spectacular views, rock formations, trails, and overall a great nature experience. We still enjoyed a picnic at one of the many picnic tables near the concession stand area. First visit to the concession stand and they had a lot of really fun inexpensive kid gifts and neat adult gifts as well! Need to visit more often was the result of this trip!

We traveled to Wausau because there is no snow in Milwaukee and even though it was 5 degrees we had a wonderful time snowshoeing on their trails. This park is wonderful any time of the year. Unfortunately the only restrooms open were at the park office, that would have been good to know before we drove farther into the park.

Rib Mountain is an every day hike for me! So many trails, beautiful views, wonderful community! Take the ski lift in the fall to enjoy the colors, go to the top of the tower and watch all the fireworks for area cities on the 4th of July, hike the trails and enjoy a picnic at many locations with the family! Stop off the hwy and you are there!

Have not been up there in a while but I don't think it's beauty has changed a bit. Since they redid the park on the top there is no longer camping availble but they have worked to improve the existing park and add running water. They have wonderful hiking trails on all sides of the mountian. There is a look out tower at the top. During the summer months they have concerts that have views right over Wausau. The fall is absoulty gorgeous. During peak color weeks they run the ski lift up the mountian for some wonderful views.

The more we go to this park the more we like it. They have a lot of hiking trails for all levels. We really enjoyed the Quarry and Turkey Vulture trails. The biggest improvement the park could make is to mark some of the trails more clearly.

In spring, summer and fall, the hiking trails up and around the mountain provide as strenuous exercise as you could want as well as phenomenal views. In winter, the trails are great for snowshoing

By Faith A |

Rib mountain has wonderful trails for exercise and site seeing of a granite quarry. Peaceful in spring, summer and fall. The winter months are not for me, but if you snow shoe this rib mountain is a great place to go! Love it here and will miss this the most!

By Shelley C |

The lookout tower gives a very wide view of the fall color. Would highly recommend making the hike up.

Rib Mountain State Park is a diamond in the rough. It has nice hiking trails, a tower to climb and lookout over a large scenic area of miles. Also can see downtown from the tower. In the fall, the leaves are golden and crisp to walk on. It is not over crowded if you go during the week, The ski lift also is open for a fee to ride up and down the mountain a couple of weekends in the fall.

By Diane V |

This is a great park for hiking, picnicking, and spending time with family & friends. The views are spectacular all year round.

By Jeanne S |

If you go to Rib Mountain in the Fall and drive to the top, the view is awesome no matter which direction you look.

By chesmorek76 |

We visited in the fall and ride the ski lift up to the top. The view was stunning. A lot of walking trails and chances to take breathe taking pictures.

By Travelvloggers |

My grandparents live in the area, and this is one of our "must visits" every time we are are in the area! During the fall, the area becomes gorgeous for pictures! We always take yearly photos up on the rocks of all us cousins together!

Local State Park...one of our favorites to hike or just grab a sandwich and sit. Beautiful views! Anytime of the year...you'll not be disappointed.

By csum2015 |

Beautiful place to explore and spend time with your favorite people. Many trails from easy to more difficult. Bring a picnic lunch with the family.

By Trixies-MomandDad |

What a great State Park. The hiking was wonderful, scenery and lookout tower was great. A very nice place to spend an Autumn afternoon. Park staff was very helpful. Hiking trails are a little screwy, but easy enough to figure out after walking awhile.

By paintedkiwi |

You need to buy a daily or yearly pass to get into this park. We bought a yearly pass (paid about 10.00 more for having out of state license plates). This state park has some great hiking and beautiful views. My daughter loves climbing on the rocks and taking in the views from the lookout tower.

By maxracx |

Rib Mt is a great place to hike the trails and get in touch with the outdoors. Great scenic overlooks. Nice walking trails. The best time of year would be Sept into Oct for Fall Colors.

By ThorsMomma |

We drove up to the State Park after skiing. Even in winter there were some trails to follow. It is a gorgeous setting and we plan on coming back to check it out in summer months.

By mvoeg731 |

The views are spectacular and then in certain times you can ride the lifts up and down, which is a great thing to do in the fall. Walk up and down the hill or even through some of the trails for a nice day of adventure and exercise.

By MACT1045 |

My husband and I have attended several Concerts in the Clouds on top of the park. What a great venue for talented local musicians! Walking trails are great for a variety of abilities. Grandkids love exploring the rocks!

By ro13 |

Came here with my sister. We hiked and really enjoyed the rocky area. It was so unique. Climbed to the top of the tower for some neat views. This is one of the many state parks that I can't wait to revisit.

By conferencetraveler62 |

Had an extra day in Wausau and wanted to find a way to enjoy the beautiful late spring day and get a look at everything and Rib Mountain was the ideal place. I didn't realize it was the highest point in all of WI (according to the plaque on the rock we climbed). Went to the top for an hour ($5) and climbed to the top of the observation deck and it is quite the view. Well worth the time and effort. I can see how this would be an ideal location in October to see the fall colors as well.

By Redwings88 |

View from observation tower is spectacular (except for the cell phone and TV tower). The trails are varied and go through different parts of the park.

By JenR8R |

Walking up the mountain (ample parking at the base of the mountain) is fantastic exercise, and you can walk right into the park without paying admission or needing a state park sticker. Many trails, great spots for viewing the Wausau area (including a fire tower to climb) and birds, deer, etc.

By Randi |

We chose an amazing day to visit this park! Such amazing colors throughout the whole park. We hiked two different trails and the trails are marked and easy to follow.
We also rode the chair lift later in the day, where we had purchased the tickets online. There was quite the crowd on a Wednesday at 4pm. Due to Covid restrictions, they had hand sanitizer available and masks were required, and people for the most part kept a good 6 foot distance.

By ltpparrot |

State park sticker required but worth it. Have taken my cycle up many times. Never get tired of the views. A place to be by yourself or picnic with family. Second highest point in the state. Well worth it!

By Angie Y |

We love to drive up to Rib Mountain The view and park are amazing year round. The concerts in the clouds are so enjoyable.

By Brad A |

There are a lot of very nice trails spanning miles all around the park & hillsides. There is a great 60 foot tower to climb that gives spectacular views in every direction. We took the Fall colors ski lift ride up from the ski resort, fun day.

By Valedia |

We set out to see fall foliage, hike and explore the Wausau area, and RMSP in particular. Great trails for hiking, and the 60' tower in the park that we climbed gave us outstanding views of the area. There are beautiful paved biking trails in the park too!

By monkeysdad |

This used to be a campground looking out over the Wisconsin River Valley. It is now a day use park. It is very popular to park at the bottom of the mountain and walk to the top. There are hiking trails covering miles at the top as well. A concession stand operates in season. The park is used for entertainment as well, with a "Concert in the Clouds" series bringing in eclectic music and other entertainment (recently saw a very clever rendition of "A Midsummer's Night's Dream"). My family and I live at the foot of the park, and travel to it at least monthly.

I was in Wausau on business but found time to walk around Rib Mountain State Park and really enjoyed the view!

By EmbracetheBullfrog13 |

Only had 2-3 hours before sunset to do some hiking, but the views were amazing, especially from the Observation Tower (must stop & climb to the top, if you’re able). Certainly worth the $11 fee if you are planning a full day there. The guard at the entrance building was very welcoming, and helpful with trail suggestions. However, the map, while adequate (I didn’t get lost), could have been a bit more descriptive. And though the color distinct trails are well marked, they are narrow in many spots, and quite rocky (leave the flip-flops behind). There are also deep changes in altitude, so you’ll get a great workout, even over short linear distances. If the state spiffs up the map a bit and adds some wording to the trail signs (other than just colors & arrows), I’ll likely up my rating to a 5-star. If the concession booth also were open during summer weekdays (currently just Sat/Sun), that would help too, as a bottle of water or energy drink would have been welcoming at the end of my hike.

Was beautiful views.cant wait to go back and hike.didnt have time.but only in summer.i hate snow and cold weather.nice trees and flowers.nice trails too

By Jerrycur1s |

Rib mountain has some amazing well marked hiking trails. the trails are great for novice hikers. the look out tower is must and pretty close to parking.

Yes nice place love it great outdoors safe fresh air way from the noise of town, colorful Good for family
i do recome

Wonderful park for hiking and climbing / playing on the rocks. The observation tower is always a favorite and the scenery is beautiful. There is also a snack shop. Walking up the hill is also a good workout.

By Michael F |

This is the highlight of Central Wisconsin. It is the second highest point in Wisconsin, but the vantage point gives views far better than the highest (Timm's Hill), even though that is a great place to visit too. Many great hiking trails that can easily fill a day. Most are moderately easy and most families would be able to do them. They are rough and rocky trails, though and definitely note stroller-friendly. There is an observation tower. Concerts are held during the summer months in an amphitheater. This is a very good place for snowshoeing for those who like to be active in the winter!

By Digit R |

Best hiking in the state! Great facilities and views cannot be beat! If attempting the climb up the south face yellow trail, it's a very step and strenuous walk up.

By Craig M |

I visited in the winter to do some hiking, there are several trails to choose from in the park, and great views of the area from the tower on top of the mountain. The day-use fee is reasonable, and worth it.

By kheimsc |

This park is kept in such great condition and is a perfect family outing while the weather is still beautiful.

By Vince Q |

Always enjoy the trip to Granite Peak at Rib Mountain. Great terrain park for our snowboarders and plenty of groomed slopes for everyone else. Not bad vertical for the midwest.

By BobandKristine S |

the wedding day was slightly over cast but no rain ! a perfect day not too hot or cold ! the ceremony took place on the overlook , beautiful view ! the brides dad is in a wheel chair but was
able to come down the center aisle because on gentle slope . everything went extremely well. great place for a receiving line on sidewalk. also, used huge rock pile for pictures .great setting for any such occasion as long as mother nature cooperates

By Angie A |

The concerts in the cloud series was amazing. We were there for the Monroe Crossing concert. The band was fabulous and the view was beyond belief.

By Don P |

There is a pleasant drive leading to the top of Rib Mountain with beautiful views. There is several picnic areas, a viewing tower, and plenty of parking spots. They will at times have concerts in the small amphitheater at the summit.

By jennyrO2003MI |

I meet my friend here regularly to walk around the park as well as through the woods to get exercise. I really like coming here. It's beautiful + great place to exercise. They also regularly have concerts as well. Always enjoyed my time here.

By G9739BEdianes |

The views from the top are amazing. From the top you can see Wausau and the valley below. You can also see the other side which gives you a look for miles if it’s clear. Hike, picnic or just enjoy the view. In the summer there are concerts on the top also. Beautiful place all year long.

By Ken S |

This park was not officially open as far as I could tell. There is one self pay station well before the entrance, but otherwise it seemed closed. There were a few people walking dogs and watching skiers on the other side of the hill. I didn't stay long but I bet it's a nice spot in better weather.

By BuyReallyLow |

Very Nice for a 2 miles stretch hike. Easy to find the trails - marked by color - mostly off the parking lot at the very top of a road. Very nice to see late season skiers out as well.

By Charles S |

I have never been there to ski, but the beauty of the area in the summer and fall is breath-taking. A wonderful place to take in nature.

By Chetekian |

Super place! Awesome paved (!) trails, drive right to the top. Lots of parking and picnic areas. Climb the tower for an added thrill. Kids love to climb on the rocks. You can spend all day here and still not see it all. Foliage was incredible!

By Rick Dyann S |

This is an amazingly beautiful place. In summer it’s great for picnics and hiking. Winter is downhill skiing at Granite peak. But all year it’s an place for amazing views. Climb the tower and see for miles or sit and have a quiet time looking over the city of Wausau and surrounding countryside.

By theriekkis |

We ventured over to Wausau to check out the hiking at Rib Mountain. And we had at great day to do it. We enjoyed all the hiking trails (we did most of them), and the scenery was great. The only complaint I had was the trail marking was a little confusing. Other than that, it is an excellent park with a bunch of shorter trails, which are great with younger children.

By Susan M |

beautiful, highest point in the state. climb the tower to the top for views that are beautiful and fun to see

By David D |

We ski Granite Peak (aka Rib Mountain) every winter and we have not been disappointed yet. It is one of the most family-friendly ski resorts in Wisconsin, and it has the broadest terrain selection. The north facing slopes hold snow much better than other ski resorts that face south. It makes a significant difference.

An enormous thank you also to General Manager, Vicki Baumann for turning our stupid mishap into a treasured memory! Also, kudos for balancing a natural wonder (Rib Mountain State Park) with the recreation needs of Wisconsinites.
