3 of 31 Best Attractions in Huntsville

This is a nice diversion if you are driving on I-45. It takes 15 minutes to tour the place, longer if you'd like to visit the gift shop. What made the visit so good, was the storytelling by the extremely informative docent who was staffing the information desk. The 77-foot tall statue along I-45 is a tribute to the man/men who made Texas what it is.

Its a huge monument right off the freeway. Its not easy to get to and you have to go stand out by the freeway to get a good picture, but its really an amazing place.

We only saw this from the Northbound I45 but knew it was there so slowed down a bit to look at it.
It does indeed look great set in the woods looking out over the freeway. Old Sam looks very impressive as you drive by.
By all means, slow down and take a look, but be careful. It's probably not wise to stop on the Interstate!

Family fun, history, friendly people. Great for taking photographs. We had a 12 year old with us and she was spellbound and lived taking a picture in front of Sam

A statue of Gen. Sam Houston the president of the Republic of TEXAS. Also his home and his museum .also nearby is the tdcj prison museum , with the origanal electric chair and a cell you can take pictures in .also the hearts veterans museum a must see attraction in huntsville,TEXAS

Just passed by this beautiful statue on our way to lunch with friends. It creates quite a presence along the freeway.

Driving back home to Dallas we stopped at the statue visiting center. The staff were super friendly and kind. Not much to see but it was easy and fast, no great delays.

We were just traveling down Interstate 45 and suddenly the awesome, huge, magnificent statue of Sam Houston was on the side of the road. We just had to turn around and take a picture of this spectacular monument to one of Texas’s most beloved pioneers. Breathtaking.

I pass by the Sam Houston Statue every time during my drive from Houston to Dallas. I enjoy seeing a historical site that is nicely kept. Its interesting to see how a piece of history still exist!

Nothing to do here but see a stature of a dude that didn't like taxes. THere is a small gift shop, but who cares. Keep driving.

I took my kids to see the statue that we passed all the time up close. And let me tell you....WOW. It's amazing. The detail work is just awesome. You really have to see this first hand. Just a little warning; standing under it will make you feel real small (or at least it did for me!)

You have to look for the Sam Houston statue when you are going through Huntsville on I-45. This is an awesome sight. A larger than life statue for the larger than life founding father of Texas.

good welcome centre with loos and gift shop, and short walk away is this huge statue. very detailed. l

The visitor information center adjacent to the statue was extremely helpful. They had helpful brochures which the staff used to provide directions and recommendations. The statue was impressive.

Quick stop here and wasn't disappointed. The statue is gigantic and impressive from the road and standing right underneath. The shop is very good but toilets not so.....

This is so cool. The statue is "Ginormous" Great to just get off the road and stretch your legs and learn a little about Houston history. Don't forget to sign the guest book!!

This road side attraction is definitely unique and memorable. It is even mentioned at the SHSU orientation sessions. You can see it from the roadside.

Great place to get out of car for a stretch and learn about Sam Houston. If visiting Huntsville, stop in for a look see. Sit in the front porch swing and imagine that life so long ago.

The statue is worth a visit and the gift shop is staffed by friendly personnel. You can even go inside the "spare" head of the statue.

Stopped by the visitor center to see big Sam. He is huge. You don’t realize how big until tou stand underneath him. Nice gift shop too!!

We were curious about seeing this well hyped statue. Yes it was Texas Tall, and the man a hero and historic, but it could also have been added to the list for people who enjoy looking for the largest ball of twine, the biggest Jackalope, The Cadillac Ranch or the Wig Wam Motel.
The small grounds around the statue were messy and not well kept but the statue also did not have any graffiti painted on it...and that was wonderful to see. Good job keeping the vandals out!

This is a very impressive bit of engineering/ architecture/art that we had driven past way too quick up the Interstate ... When next in Conroe we decided to call in to have a better look at the Big Man and took the opportunity of taking some great photos especially with his spare head. Cute gift shop.

Driving by you would think its just a statue, behind the statue is a park, a path, sculptures, a gift shop, a welcome center, bathrooms, and an entire experience !

You will definitely see this statue from the highway. go to the next exit past statue and
Turn right and go back to the visitors center and short walk to statue. It is very interesting

It's really big! It does have a nice area around it. Small picnic table and a trail that leasds from visitor center to statue.

This is a must-see for anyone visiting this region. Snap a selfie next to Big Sam. Be sure to visit his home downtown.

Quick stop for a little history lesson on one of the founding fathers of Texas. Beware of the gift shop. They wanted $16.95 for a small sticker. Also, the bathroom was not pleasant at all. Needs a little work. The statue was definitely worth seeing.

Don't miss Big Sam- can see this from I-45 as a drive by or can venture off the interstate to the visitor center

We have driven by Sam so many times.... He is impressive from the highway. This trip, our son needed a restroom, so we stopped in. I'm happy we did! It was really cool to see this impressive statue up close. A neat photo opp in addition to the clean and spacious restroom facilities, gift shop and information center. There we also games for the kids to play. A life size checkers game was out on the patio for anyone to enjoy. Friendly people were staffed at the stop to answer questions.
It was also an EASY on and off stop from the highway. A quick check off on our to do list!

Couldn't believe this statue - I hope our country doesn't decide he needs to be torn down. A fascinating person - Cherokee connections and a true believer in the USA.

I thought that this was going to be a nice 0.5 mile hike or so. It's just a good place to stretch your legs and see a giant statue of an important person in Texas History.

You can see the statue from several miles away when traveling north from Houston, and while there are 'No Parking' signs all along the interstate, there are always several cars that apparently have exemptions from such things. Those who stop on the interstate miss the best parts of the park! There are several exhibits outside, as well as a nice visitors info/gift shop. Said to be the largest statue of an American hero in the country, Big Sam is a must see!

Wow. This is an impressive piece of sculpture and we were very impressed.
The visitor center was good and the staff very helpful.

If you are driving by Huntsville on Interstate 45 you can't miss the Sam Houston Statue standing beside the road. No matter how much you want to, DO NOT STOP ON THE INTERSTATE. It is not only illegal but very dangerous. That the exit and follow the signs to the visitors center. When I was there there were doing to work on the visitor center but it was just a minor issue. The volunteers were more than willing to help you navigate around the repairs. The visitors center offers you free parking and a paved walking path that will lead you to the 67 foot tall statue. There is no charge for visiting the statue and it is one of the classic roadside attractions.

My son is a senior this year and wants to go into Criminal Justice so we toured SHSU. After some research I was surprised to learn that for CJ it's the top school in TX and often ranked within the top 10 for the nation. We were very impressed by the CJ school and physical facilities. The campus is beautiful with lots of rolling hills and trees. We are touring the dorms this afternoon so more to come on that. I gave it 5 stars because of the CJ program. We drove around the town a little in preparation of purchasing a small house for him to live in after his freshman year (I'm not a fan of paying rent) and there are definitely some "very sketchy" areas so if your child attends SHSU please be careful about where they live once off campus. The town also has some really nice areas. Overall we were very happy with the school, campus and town.

How it's history. He's a giant statue that has been in Huntsville for the longest time. It's pretty cool how you can go and see him.

Nice statue. The atmosphere was peaceful and moment to always remember. Recommend this place at anytime. Thanks.

After passing the statue many times from the highway my family pulled off into the small, sweet park. My son was writting a paper on Sam Houston so we checked out the statue. Very impressive standing at the bottom of the statue. Inside the park is a full size head to stand next to and understand the size. Picnic tables available for a lunch or quiet sit. Very charming and worth the short visit.

The best thing about stopping to visit the huge statue, apart from taking a good look up close, is the opportunity to learn a bit about this giant of a man in Texas and U.S. history. Sam Houston is honored in Huntsville because he made his home there at the time of his death in 1863. He would have nothing to do with the Confederacy, so he resigned as Governor of Texas after the vote to secede from the Union and retired to Huntsville. It's a short pleasant walk though the woods from the visitor center to the statue. Admission is free.

traveling north on I-45 you can see Sam Houston from miles away. Very interesting statuary in total whilte!!!! Stop and take a look!!!

Always a good place to stop and walk around! Definately worth the visit and time to learn a little Texas History!

Very huge monument of a person that is admired by Texans. Well loved and much history concerning Mr. Sam Houston.

Traveling through Huntsville I saw a sign about the Big Sam Houston statue so I thought I'd check it out. Nice visitor center with friendly workers. There's a nice path with picnic tables that lead you to the statue. The statue is along Interstate 45. Enjoyed seeing some local history and recommend this to anyone passing through Huntsville.

What a great place for such an important person in our state and nation's history. the kids were in awe of the size of the statue.

This statue sits along I-45. It is quite impressive and at night, it is very well lit and you can't miss it. I was surprised at its dimensions.

I don't think I would add this to any trip lists unless I was in the area with some free time. We stopped here back in the late 1990's while we were camping in Huntsville. Since then I've driven by it dozens of times as I go up and down I-45.
The statue is 67 feet tall and sits on a pedestal that is another 10 feet tall. It was built in 1995 as a tribute to Sam Houston. He was a pivotal figure in the independence of Texas. He lead the army that defeated Santa Ana in the battle of San Jacinto.
Everything you need to see is available driving up I-45. It's easier to see on the northbound side, but you can see it on the southbound side. If you do visit the statue, it is cool because of the size. Still it's only a 5 minute stop.

This statue is visible several miles before you actually get to it on IH 45.
Walking up to it is a real experience as you can see how big it actually is.

We could see him coming from over a mile away! Mr. Houston looked like he was standing right in the middle of the interstate.

Great place to stop along highway 45. Sam is touted as the second largest freestanding statue in America, bested only by the Statue of Liberty. Nice grounds to enjoy walking with a good museum and gift shop on the grounds. In the gift shop there is a pretty cool animation about the statue that was created by students in the Animation major at SHSU.

You can park behind the statue and walk through the trees to see the statue. It's a short walk. Nice area.

Was very upset that the restrooms were all out of order yet this was not indicated prior to exiting the interstate!!!! When I explained that we had small children in addition to a disabled person the woman told me there was a service station up the road!! I told her we could not make it that far and I seriously doubted she was using the service station she said it wasn’t that far. Next time please indicate this issue as most if not all rest areas do with a notice on the exit!!

SAM is larger than life. HE is BIG and I mean BIG. He is a little pale, but that is to be expected..

Nice Visitor Center, beautiful park with picnic tables under majestic pine trees. The statue is a must see up close. Driving past the statue on the highway doesn't do it justice.

The Statue itself is impressive, and can be seen both along the road and close up. There is also a small amphitheater with a replica of the head, a gift shop, and a visitor center.

We have driven past this statue so many times and each time we say "we need to stop here sometime." Well, we finally did! It was even more awesome up close. We were there after hours, so we were not able to go into the visitor center or gift shop, but we were so happy we could still walk around.

... and really cool. You can see this from I45 but it is worth the 15 minute detour. Recommend following thus with the Sam Houston Museum.

It's worth stopping to get out of the car and stretch your legs. You can see the statue from the highway but you need to see it up close to see how huge it is. There is a little path you take to get to the statue. There are also restroom facilities here.

We were doing a whirlwind tour of Texas with some students visiting from Germany, so--of course--we had to stop here! I told them the story of Sam Houston and his role in Texas's independence and eventual statehood. They were amazed at the size of the statue!

My wife had a sister and husband who lived for years near the Bush International Airport in Aldine that we loved to visit from our homes in the DFW Metroplex. So, we drove down I-45 through Huntsville to enjoy a visit and play some cards. After her husband died, my wife's sister moved south of Huntsville, and we would visit her and enjoy this statue. Now, she is nearing death and lives in a care facility in Huntsville near her family, and we still go out of our way to see one of the fathers of our great State! Go and see it up close and you will see a metaphor for the size of his impact on the state of Texas and what makes it so significant economically, politically, and enjoyable for its citizens!

This is the largest statue I have ever seen. Amazingly the statue has weathered time nicely and has great detail for it’s size. This is something you will never see again.

Cool stop if you are passing by. There is a visitor center that is on the grounds that might be worth checking out but it wasn't open when I passed through.

We went to see the statue when it was lit up in orange color in honor of SHSU's play-off games last fall. What an awesome sight to come rolling down the dark highway and see this huge orange sight! Our family - most of whom are SHSU alums - call him "Big Whitey"!

It was amazing to stand in front of this giant statue. Really was neat to see. Quite a tribute to Sam Houston!

Beutiful well taken care of statue great site. It is definitely a learning experience.. everyone should check it out

Another short, but very interesting stop on the way through Huntsville. There is a beautiful little visitors' center and gift shop, with a short trail through a nice wooded area to see the statue. Well worth taking a few minutes out if your day.

The statue of Sam Houston is huge and a great photo opportunity. Easy access right off US45. A nice place to stop.

This was my second visit to the statue. It is an impressive site. I missed the turnoff going south because of the construction but on my return I was able to take the well marked exit for the visitor center. It's not really a place where you make a special trip to get to but it's what I call a "bonus". It's worth the stop and like already said "impressive". And it's a freebee.

No visit to Huntsville is complete without stopping by to see the Sam Houston Statue. The staff is very friendly and seeing how the statue was built is interesting too. I love the gift shop, there's always great Texas memorabilia.

this statue area is a nice visit for those in a hurry and with kids, its small yet charming and a nice stroll through the woods to get to teh statue, the gift shop is ok too but rather expensive.

Impressive reminder of the great and honorable men responsible for the foundation of our Republic.
I recommend the home that Sam Houston inhabited and the area surrounding the campus of Sam Houston University, (my alma mater).

Not much to say but wow that's a giant statue. I don't know anything about it. But it's a fun place to take pictures. It's worth the stop.

No matter what time or how hot it is there are always people at this statue. When traveling north to Huntsville on I45 at night you can see the statue. It appears to be in the middle of the road when you first see it.

Newly remodeled motel with all texas size kitchen-aid rooms with all kitchenware in side friendly staff nice big pool, free internet and LCD television

This is a great and quick way to pull over and get a cool family photo with the statue in the background or take pictures in general of your family members with the statue. There's also a replica of his head located feet away from the large statue. Younger kids and adults alike enjoy sticking their hand in his nostril (i.e. - picking his nose). Pointing this out as another photo op. Not much else to do here. It's free though, so worth a stop for cool pictures.

There were making some repairs to the visitor center, but you still can walk up to the statue. It is very big and in need of some repairs. I think his finger is going to come down. The staff was very informative.

You have to see this in person to truely understand how awesomeness of this statue. The staff is friendly and the view is perfect. You walk through nature trail to get to statue. It is a quick adventure that is perfect.

Very Impressive Statue!! We went to the museum than hit this on the way back. It's Huge! You can't miss it.

Worth the time! Beautiful surroundings and easy to get to for a closeup view and pictures. Big Sam, as the locals call him, is a very large statue, and there are several informational stations. Great for anyone to see and especially all the history buffs.

We finally stopped by the big Sam statute on our trip there while we were visiting my daughter at college. The statue is impressive up close and from far away! Very neat landmark in Huntsville!

Nice piece of history. Great staff and gift shop. This is a good stop for schools or tourists along a vacation route. The statue is wonderful.

While traveling to and from Galveston, we saw the large statue of Sam Houston along I-45. I am not sure how old the statue is, but it is snow white in color. How do they keep it clean along the dirty interstate? My guess is Oxyclean. Anyway, when traveling south on I-45, after the Huntsville rest area, the statue is on the opposite side of the road. Heading north on I45, you can pull off on the shoulder.

You just need to see this. It's a huge testament to a founding g father. You can see it from the highway. But drive to it. You need to drink it all in.

Being a native Texan, we know the history of Sam Houston. But, it is great to have such an impressive statue to remind us of our heritage. This is a beautiful setting right adjacent to Northbound I-45. Unfortunately, the proximity to the interstate detracts from the natural beauty and sounds of the park. It is definitely worth the time and effort to pull off the freeway at Huntsville and visit the statue and learn why Texans revere this icon from our history. You won't be disappointed.

You see the statue from I-45, but there's nothing to compare to seeing it up close from the park. It has a nice picnic area which is a pleasant place to stop between Houston and Dallas. Our grandkids love looking for the statue whenever we travel on 45.

We drove by the Sam Houston Statue on our way over to Huntsville.
It was enormous, and incredible to see that such an old statue still looks brand new today.

Roadside attraction kitsch meets historical monument. The kind people who staff the visitor center are earnest enough to keep tongue-in-cheek impulses in check, allowing you to get a sense of history along with snapshots and souvenirs.

Anyone who loves Texas History needs to stop and see the statue to a man who helped change how people view Texas. His stature can be seen in this monument, as he looks out on East Texas.

Larger than life statue of the HWY of Sam Houston. Stop and snap a picture. Unbelievable how large is

You need to stand by it to appreciate its true size, but a drive past it on the interstate would be enough.

You cannot miss this extremely tall, white statue of Sam Houston, while travel ling on I-45. It is seen on the northbound side of I-45, just south of the Huntsville, TX Prison. A slight detour will get you to the visitor Center, where a short walk will lead you to the base of the statue. It is HUGE!!!!!! The staff at the Visitor Center was very knowledgeable, and friendly, and they answered all the questions we had.

The statue was neat and the kids had fun posing with the statue, but besides the statue, there wan't much else to look at.

Very stoic place. The park was clean and seemed well tended. The statue is along I-45 and at night definitely catches your eye. If you love Texas history you need to stop.

I like this place . I own my own Motel on highway19. I travel this road almost every day feel very nice to watch this statue.

Sam Houston was another legendary Texan and at 76 feet tall was practically the same height as the Stephen Austin statue in Angleton.
I actually forgot about Sam Houston but it so towered above the 45 freeway that I had time to slow down and exit.
The park and gift shop were just right off the freeway exit. There was lots of parking and no admission to access the park. There were only a couple cars but a large number of students arrived via a school bus.
The statue was just a short walk down a gravel path. Other paths meandered off and batches of students split off so the crowd thinned out the closer to the statue we got. A replica of Sam Houston’s face was near the amphitheater and allowed us to view up close versus from below.
There was a large grassy field in front of Sam Houston and I did have to back up a bit in order to take a full photo. It was a little muddy so keep that in mind if visiting during or after a rainstorm.
The gift shop was quite small so I skipped it.
All in all we spent around 15 minutes here.

This was much bigger than I imagined, hard to miss view from the highway. Depending the time of day and weather, this is worth a stop and great photo opportunity.

The statue is larger than life, to say the least. You can see the statue clearly from Hwy 45, but take a detour to see it up close and personal. You won't be sorry.

This is an easy stop to make. Many people pulled off the road and took pictures, we traveled to the visitors center. There is a nice path through the woods that leads to the statue. This is worth stopping to see.

Something to see. You can see this from miles away.

This was a nice little stop on our trip. We enjoyed learning about Sam Houston and about the statue.

i believe this may be the largest statue of an American hero in America. Take time to visit the small museum behind the statue. There is also a small picnic area if that appeals to you. Easy to get to right off freeway !

I had driven past the statue many, many times and I was glad I stopped to take a closer look at the statue and the visitors center.

You have to come and visit this place..! A very interesting history will entertain you. Please just do not park on the Hwy. nice people is awaiting to help in the entrance. It's free..!!!

Interesting place. Nice people running the place. They were well informed and pleasant. The walk to the statue was nice with a three year old. Gift shop was nice and we purchased a couple of things.

Almost missed the turn, otherwise very cool. You can see it really good from the highway on way North out of park.

This is a very Godzilla-sized statue. You might see it from I-45. Please stop by! There are a visitor center and gift shop.I got complimentary coffee at the visitor center. And I saw a cat at the visitor center. She is very adrable. I called him " Sam". LOL.

I can't say anything else. It's a huge statue. White color. I can't write 50 characters about this. Just a huge statue. You can see it from the highway

Very impressive statue. Looks great at night. Good photo op and great place to stretch your legs. Restrooms could use some updating.

We stopped after going to Huntsville State Park. Nice and friendly people. The gift shop is a bit expensive, compared to others we have shopped. Great photo ops.

We actually stopped at this in July 2010, but we have driven by him many times. The best part about getting up close were the plaques at the base of the statue. Unless you really want to have some pictures of you with the man, then keep on driving.

The 67 foot statue atop a ten foot base, the world's tallest statue of an American hero, is very fitting for a man who stood 6'8" in real life. The base lists Houston's achievements including being the only American to ever be governor of two different states (TX and TN). It is a short, pleasant walk from the Visitor Center to the statue with shaded areas with picnic tables and places to sit along the way. The area was so peaceful and relaxing I wished I had purchased a sandwich to eat here. The volunteers at the VC said at night the statue is lit, is visible for about six miles, and for NB vehicles the statue appears at times to be directly above the road.
Besides the statue, there is also a wonderful Visitor Center for Huntsville with knowledgeable and friendly volunteers that really give excellent advice and a gift shop with lots of Texas merchandise. This was my first visit to Huntsville and by stopping here first I received advice that was invaluable-best routes, places to eat and how to best spend my two days in Huntsville.
You could walk out to the statue and back in 10 minutes or so (wheelchair users will have no problems) but I suggest visitors would also enjoy the VC and gift shop. If you want to learn more about Sam Houston, the Sam Houston Memorial Museum is just a short drive away.

The statue of Sam Houston on I-45 just celebrated 20 years! It's definitely worth making a stop at the statue and visitor's center to see the statue up close and personal and to view photos of it's construction and installation. There's a small gift shop that is a fun place to see.

Very impressive to see this statue in person in person! It was fascinating to learn how this sculture was made, and to see it up close.

On the north side I-45 Interstate just before entering Huntsville, TX is this huge statue of Sam Houston (guess maybe 100' tall) accompanied by a small visitors center and gift shop. There is also a nice little park between the visitors center and the statue where you can rest under tree cover. Impressive statue carved all in white stone.
Nice little place for a short visit and picture taking in front of the statue.

We have always check this out since i was a kid. Now that i have kid of my own i like to stop and show him the statue its an iconic thing for the area. If you hapoen to drive by on one of the few times it freezes the ice sickles hang from it and look pretty neat.

When you are driving up I-45 around Huntsville, there's an amazing landmark and that is the towering status of General Sam Houston. His presence is as amazing as his role in Texas history and it's wonderful that he has been honored like this.

You can see The Sam Houston Statue from the highway, But you have to stop and read the history of Sam Houston and the Statue. Standing by it you realize just how high the Statue is.

Love to take the kids here they can learn a little something about history and tall statue of Sam Houston:) Free Free always a plus. Gift shop inside the park. Free Parking.

This statue of Sam Houston stands 77 feet tall, and you can see it from the highway but be sure and stop in the visitor center and gift shop. We spoke with one of the volunteers there, who knows the history of the statue and can answer all your questions about it and the area, plus is able to inform you as to the sites in the area to check out. He was a delight to talk with very friendly and just the kind of person I would love to set down and have a cup of coffee with and spend hours talking to.

If you're passing through you can make a quick stop at the Sam Houston monument. Do not park on the side of the highway, follow he signs and it will take you to free parking! There is a visitors centers and some benches to sit on. Follow the short trail and there is a small outdoor amphitheater which features Sam hoisting face. You can get a photo here. Follow the trail and you will see the statue! There plenty of room to get a full photo of the entire statue. Do not climb on the statue! This is disrespectful of the property.

Viewing the Statue is always interesting. The staff working the visitors Center is always so very helpful and polite. The people working in the gift shop are also special people the way they treat all the guests. you can see the statue for about 5 miles down the road

I've always wanted to stop and decided this would be a great way to stretch our legs along. The kids enjoyed working along the trail and, of course, we got a photo opt.

It was interesting and very huge, not much to see, we did visit other Sam Houston sites in town, but was worth the stop

We drove past it on our way to dallas. We had heard of it, but didnt intend to stop. Once you drive by, you turn the car around and you stop.
Its a statue, a huge one, nestled amidst trees and fresh air.....and the highway.
Very friendly, very interesting. It takes you ten minutes to stop, stretch your legs, and learn something!

They have a nice gift shop, and it's fun to take pictures up close and personal. It's not gonna change your life, and you can do it in 10 minutes including buying a postcard, but if you're along the Huntsville Interstate, it's a fun stop.

Most travelers have no idea what an important role Sam Houston played in the history of our state and nation. Without his leadership, the British would have likely conquered New Orleans in the battle in 1803 and we would all be speaking the "Kings English" today.

The statue is a great photo-op and a must-see (at least once in your life) if you're passing through the area. I wish the workers would give visitors more verbal information about Sam Houston.

Very friendly staff arranged chairs for our group to easily view the short film on how the statue came into being. Then walked us out to the statue and explained about the hidden door and a few other facts; also took a group picture for us. If you are driving on I-45 in the Huntsville area stop and take a look.

Definitely worth a stop, even just 15 minutes is worth it.
(We stayed an hour, reading the informational literature and taking pics.)

Well they say everything's bigger in Texas, and this statue sure lives up to that. The Sam Houston statue is iconical on the freeway that's for sure. What you need to do is take the Side Road and go to the visitor center, and chat with the ladies in the visitor center, and in the gift store, and get yourself over there to the base of that statue and get a real handle on how big it is. Big it is, no it's huge, it's ginormous. What fun and what history lie behind Sam Houston. I can't think of many people who have been senators in two states, a governor, and just downright help make Texas what it is. It's a real eye-opener and there's more history there than I can remember oh, so I guess I'm going to have to go again so that I can keep getting my Texas history straight. Definitely a worthwhile stop, and additionally a good place for a picnic, if you happen to have one in the back of your car, if not take one and enjoy it here under the shadow of Sam Houston

Just enjoyed the size of the statue and of course all the reading just makes it intriguing. It is really worth your time so please take time.

Cool statue, can be seen from afar, it is lighted well at night so you can see it driving by at night

There's not much to see if you stop at the statue visitors center. There's a short path to the statue to see it up close. I wish there had been more about the building process etc. The cat inside the visitors center was the most interesting part of the stop.

I'm not a native Texan so I don't know the Texas story. This statue has a sign with a lot of interesting information about Sam Houston (and thus, Texas history). This dude was smart and busy. His statue is ginormous and makes for awesome picture-taking. I prefer the shots taken from right under him, with the sun shining behind. But pictures of people posing at his feet are cute too. Around the statue are lovely grounds. It's a shady forest-garden area.
There's a fun gift shop full of fabulously tacky Texas stuff and and a good selection of postcards. The gift shop sells cold bottled water and there is a coke machine outside that even has Diet Dr. Pepper (God bless the South). There are bathrooms and a little room for guests to sign in and get information (and cool off on the couch). The people working the day I went were friendly and knowledgeable.

This can be seen from I-45, right next to the road. You can't miss it! Very nice grounds. very interseting

This is a required visit for all Texans. The lovely wooded grounds are the perfect setting for the amazing, huge statue. Kids will have a blast! Take lots of pictures.

This is a great tribute to a great man. The workmanship is excellent. The size is breath taking. The lessons learned are unforgettable.

The 67 foot statue can be seen from I-45 Northbound for 6.5 miles!! Great little place to learn about the man, Huntsville and take pictures. The docents in the visitors center are extremely friendly and helpful. There is a gift shop (with Blue Bell ice cream), picnic area, and restrooms. Really a great little stop on your travel path!! FYI--the frontage road is a two way road and the 45 north exit is in front of Huntville's Goree Unit. (7600 Highway 75 South) I-45 North, exit 109 -make a right. I-45 South, exit 112

Being from the Midwest, I love roadside attractions--they just make a road trip so much more interesting! Like a lot of the other reviews have stated: it's just a statue, and personally, I don't care much for Sam Houston...BUT! It's a pretty cool picture spot, and a nice place to stretch your legs. Also, the staff at the gift shop are super nice, and there's plenty of brochures to peruse regarding local attractions.
TIP: I read one review that said: "don't stop by, just slow down to look at it." Um. NO. If you've ever driven on a Texas Highway, you know that the speed limit is 75MPH and cars go even faster than that. DO NOT SLOW DOWN! It's just as easy to get off the highway and take a look for yourself.

Physically, Sam Houston stood well over six feet tall. His accomplishments exceeded his stature, and this monument is of a fitting scale. True, you can see it from I-45, but you can't appreciate its size until you stand at its base.
I enjoyed my visit, and got information on attractions, restaurants, etc. from the helpful people in the visitor center. This attraction is worth a stop.

Sam Houston Statue is humungus! Quite impressive from the road, but even more impressive to drive to the little gift shop and follow the trail to see Sam up close and personal. We were glad we stopped. It was an adventure.

Sits on side of interstate, can't miss it. Huge! Did not get out of car...nothing else to say about it.

This was a cool statue with free entry. It's great to break up driving time! The bathrooms were very dirty, though. It's a onetime place to visit.

Just seeing a statue, but it's large! Luckily, it's set back enough from the highway so you can get it all in for a photo.

If you're headed to Huntsville or passing by on I-45, it's a good chance to stretch your legs and get a little taste of Texas. Nice welcome center, helpful people, interesting info about both Sam and the making of the statue, there were lots of kitties for our son to play with when we went. My mother-in-law doesn't get around very easily, and she could make the walk to the statue and back, but too many roots and such for those in a wheelchair or who need a walker. Only the giant statue itself will engage younger kids, but they will enjoy running around if they've been cooped up in a car!

Excellent place to visit and learn a little bit about Texas history. The staff was very friendly and the gift shop was nice. The statue is huge and represents the huge part Sam Houston played in Texas. Nice little wooded area for the visitors center. You can exit I-45 from before you pass the statue or after. Watch the signs, they were very good at pointing the way.

Well after years of travel we stopped to show fr8ends again and they were impressed with the history. Statue is well done but a bit touristy for our taste.

Stopped in here because I'm a history nut and a Freemason. There's little here to see except the very large starue of Sam Huston overlooking I-45. There is a welcome center and a giftshop for souveniers.
The big draw here is the statue itself. Sam was a big man in life...and in death. He was also a Freemason....very proud to be in tat brotherhood. Very big Texas hero! No charge. I liked it!

The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area and the life of Sam Houston. We used this a quick stop to rest while on our trip. The walk to the statue is serene. The statue was fascinating, especially in light of the history.

If you're in the area, it's worth a side trip to go see the statue. It's very impressive. There's a short wooded path to the statue with picnic tables if you wanted to have a picnic lunch. There's also a visitor's center there, but it was closed due to a recent storm and power outage.

We stopped here on our way to Huntsville State park and glad we did! The staff was very informative and really enjoyed learning about this important figure in Texas History. We were also able to buy a DVD on his life at their gift shop which we really enjoyed!
Definitely a great place to visit!

A tourist trap! Admission is free but there's nothing to say except the statue which you can see from the highway. Although it is illegal to park along the highway to view the statue; there's not much to an up close and personal visit except the ability to get a closer view.Suggestion: keep on driving save your time get a better value elsewhere, for instance the prison Museum just a couple of exits down the road a lot better value.

It is a very impressive statue and worth the side trip off of I45 to see. Be sure and spend some time in the visitors center as the docents are very knowledgeable and friendly.
If you have time be sure and ask them to play the video on the construction of the statue.

Having driven past this imposing statue countless times as I made the trip between Dallas and Houston, I finally decided to pull off I-45 for a closer look. Standing 67 feet tall on a 10-foot granite base, it is the world’s tallest statue of an American Hero, General Sam Houston. The statue, dedicated in 1994, was the idea of David Adickes who named it “A Tribute to Courage”. Better known as Big Sam, he cuts a dashing figure all in white. The plaque at the base of the statue, along with the Visitor Center/Gift Shop, provides a mini lesson in Texas history. Suddenly I understood why this giant of a man was honored with a giant-sized statue. There are restrooms and a small picnic area available. If you can tune out the sound of the interstate traffic, you’ll feel like you stepped back in history. It’s a short walk to the statue itself. This is a great place to stretch your legs after making it through the Houston traffic. Exit 109 or 112 on I-45.

We took our 3 year old grandson there to pass some time and he enjoyed the lunch we had on the picnic tables. The welcome center has a small gift shop and a large wrap around porch which is nice and reminiscent of old homes. The statue is huge and pretty impressive up close. As stated it is tricky to get to. One must take the indicated highway exits and follow a back road to enter the parking area which is behind the statue. Please do not park on the shoulder of the highway and walk across to the statue. It is illegal to park on the highway shoulder except for emergencies. I have seen on the weekends a long line of cars parked along the highway shoulder. This is dangerous and can cause an accident due to the rubbernecking of other drivers. The statue should be fenced to prevent this. Because it is not fenced, keep an eye on children as they could wander off toward the highway. All in all it is a nice place to visit so if you have a few minutes it is worth a stop.

very historical and interesting. Good statue to have a selfie with. Texans enjoy their history and their heroes.

You know you're getting close to Huntsville when you see this landmark looming in the distance. The size is remarkable and it's easy to pass by since you think you can see all there is from your car. Wrong. We finally decided to spend a short while at this spot. It's an impressive bit of history in a lovely setting.

Nice statue and a good place to go and learn a little history. The kids will like looking a the statue and there are other one behind the big one.

Thousands upon thousands of Texans and other people see the statue as they drive I-45. It's really worth the time to pull off the freeway and go to the nearby visitor center to gain more information about the statue and see a duplicate piece of the head. There is a wonderful gift shop with lots of Texas items to see and purchase. For weary travelers, it's also a nice way to stop, stretch your legs, and relax.

Wonderful staff. Statute was interesting. Gift shop interesting. Bathrooms fine. Small picnic area. Not much else there.

We visited the Sam Houston Museum and Gift Shop; the lady there gave us a very thorough history of Sam Houston and his importance in Texas history, very interesting.

67 feet tall and on a 10 foot base, Sam Houston is hard to miss if you are on Interstate 45 about exit 109. There is no place to stop but can take exit 109 to Highway 40 east to Highway 75. You can see him for miles.

The Sam Houston giant of a statue proves that everything is indeed bigger in Texas. I first caught a glimpse of this while driving North on the 45 and thought to myself, "What on earth?" It looked like a giant man was about to cross all lanes of traffic.
What's cool about it is that it makes for an interesting roadside attraction. I've done my share of driving all over the US and this is by far the largest interest piece so far.
However, once the initial moment when you are briefly captivated by the enormity of the towering monument fades, there is little else to capture your whimsy. It's worth a look a d perhaps a nice angled shot, but don't expect to make a day trip out of it.

Friendly staff at the Visitors center and gift shop. Not much to do but take pictures of the statute. The statue can be seen off the highway also. Loved the area, good shade.

I love it when you can see a landmark or statue or piece of art. This one is right there on the highway! Pull the car over, enjoy, get back on the road.
Large, beautiful statue of a famous Texan!

I have always wanted to stop here and we did this trip. It is a little out of the way off of 45 but nothing horrible. It is a great little 10 minute stop to stop and stretch. Everyone was so nice. I loved the short and wooded pathway leading to the statue. What I was disappointed in was the condition of the statue, it was very dirty. I hope they can get it cleaned off because the statue is a great piece of art and a tribute to a great leader. You can also eat at the many picnic tables.

This statue is a must see of General Sam Houston, the night time visual while driving on I 45 is something to behold.

Passed it at night & it about scared me to death all lit up!! Stopped on way back through a couple of days later. It's tradition from what I understand to have your picture taken the statue so of course, we did! It's a good place to stop, use the restroom & visit for a quick minute to learn more about a Texas legend.

Right off 45 Sam Houston stands above the highest trees overlooking the interstate. Impressive statue. If you are driving North you cannot miss it.

I have always enjoyed landmarks especially roadside ones. My teens thought it was really weird to visit but quickly changed their minds once they say the enormity of the statue. This will b something they will always remember

And of course was curious who/what this guy is. After camping, a friend and I decided to stop in with our pups. How exciting, many of us had our pups, and all were so well behaved while excited to see and meet each other.
The grounds are very well kept and the staff are SO warm and welcoming. They've large checkers on the patio where we could watch ones play while we swung on the swing.
Of course everyone wants pictures with the big guy and everyone was very assistive to others, waiting their turn from any angle. He IS pretty massive. I'm 6' and look like an ant next to him, so have good lenses handy to capture the human AND Sam's head.

Just stopped by the statue wow is it big. There opening a new visitor center next month. Did you know Sam is the second largest free standing statue in america. It’s also right down the street from the museum and his grave sit. A lot of history to learn ina short amp Mt of time.

Very nice, they hace a gift shop and an information center; also see Sam Houston's tomb which is in Huntsville as well.

The whole area around the statue is beautiful; the trees and breathtaking and the walking paths are easy to navigate. There is a lot of Texas history around Sam Houston and they do a good job of framing it without being dull.

It was a nice break in our travels to stop and visit the statue. The visitor center was nice, had brochures of what to do in the area as well as a souvenir shop. The photo opportunities were nice too. We left with some nice and unique pictures.

I have been by the statue many times, and I am glad we finally stopped.
Sunday the visitor center was closed. We enjoyed the swings on the patio.
They have restrooms available
It was a short walk to the statue. The sculptor did a fantastic job. You can also take pictures with a statue of Sam Houston's head
I loved Sam Houston's quote for leaders. "Govern wisely and as little as possible."
Make the stop while you can

It's a quick but interesting visit to the statue. The visiting center is in the process of being enlarged and enhanced. The small visitor information offers info on the statue and a guide booklet to the location of Sam Houston's grave site located in Huntsville, minutes from the Statue. There is a small gift shop and restrooms akin to Rest Areas, old but suitable. It is nestled in a beautiful treed area and is a pleasant stop on the way to the Prison Museum and historical Huntsville.

I have driven by this statue and seen pictures, but today was the first to stop and go see it. It is amazing! I can't believe I did come here sooner.

Visit and linger , look but don't park on the Highway park at the visitors center , with a nice gift shop and small museum. Worth the visit and you can walk out to the statue to take photos safely.
Again, Do Not Park in front of the Statue on the Highway Shoulder, its very dangerous.
Recommened !!!!

I drove by this twice, recently going to and from Houston. Beautiful impressive statue of a Texas hero visible from I45.

There is a lovely gift shop and information center here at the statue. There are pictures of the construction of the statue, Sam Houston related gifts and souvenirs and clean bathrooms if you stop along your way. There is no fee to enter or explore the grounds. But please DO NOT PARK ON INTERSTATE 45 TO VIEW THE STATUE! There is a great parking lot if you come to the statue from State Hwy 75. It is illegal and very dangerous to stop on the side of an Interstate!

This statue is huge! Its very interesting and a great place for a photo with a really big feature. There is a museum to buy a few souvenirs. There is road construction on the freeway so it is a bit tricky to get there.

to be able to see history and know who he was, what he did, and to go to the school would be a dream come true. the college is known to be one of the best in Texas.

This was a great thing to go and visit once. We were camping nearby at the Huntsville State Park. So it was very close and fun to go do on a day that was going a little slow. My children enjoyed picking the nose of Sam Houston! What could be more fun than that??? And its free!

This is a great place to stop along I45 for a nice break. Just off the highway you can get to see big Sam up close and learn a little Texas history in the process. The Statue is very impressive and beautifully situated among the pines. Picnic tables are located within the grounds with great shade from the trees if you want to pack a snack.

Well designed, true to the character of the great man represented.

My youngest daughter is a student at the university and in her final semester. Huntsville is a small yet growing city where SHSU is located. If you're traveling from Houston take I-45N; once you pass Conroe then you're less than half an hour away. Driving from San Antonio take I-10W to Katy TX until you get to I-45 and go north. There's a Walmart, Academy and a brand new HEB grocery store being built across I-45 and the university. Huntsville is home to the infamous prison for those on death row. A prison museum is situated downtown for tourists to visit. Just before you reach the exit for the university you will pass the giant statue of GEN Sam Houston, first governor of Texas. For those who enjoy the outdoors, visit the Sam Houston National Forest where campgrounds are plentiful.
Huntsville is constantly growing and adding many new businesses including restaurants such as Whataburger, a Texas favorite and McDonalds to name a few. I enjoyed the view of the various trees and if you're lucky you might spot a deer or two.

Extremely large statue that is visible from the highway. Not too difficult to locate. Enjoyed the walk on the trail to get to it, but would not be readily accessible for someone physically handicapped.

This amazing statue is part of a Texas visitor center off US hwy 45 in Huntsville. The statue is almost 70 feet tall, not including the granite base. The area is nicely landscaped.
You do not have to visit the center, as you cannot miss it if you are driving down the highway,
Quite a sight!

The Sam Houston Statue is incredibly giant and really needs to be seen up close to be appreciated. I had driven by it probably five or six times before stopping to give it a closer look.
The entrance to the park is a little inconvenient because it takes you about 10 minutes off the freeway (Highway 45), so it's not just a stop that you can do in five minutes. I would plan to take a bite to eat if you go because otherwise it seems like a waste of time.
It is a super cool statue, and the size really is incredible (I posted a picture of me and my kids at the base of the statue for scale), but in the end it's just a statue. Take a picnic basket and enjoy it, just don't plan on being super amazed.

This is a must if you are visiting Huntsville, Texas which was the final home and resting place for General Sam Houston. It's just north of Huntsville State Park along Interstate 45 and easy to get to. The visitors center is quite nice, a huge parking lot and a nice walkway from the center to the statue. The hardest thing is getting far enough back to get a good picture since you almost have to be right up next to the freeway traffic so be careful.

The statue is right off of highway 45 and easy to get to. There's a small museum with info about the building of the statue. Very impressive, but hard to see fully from right below.

He can be observed from the road but it is more fun to go to the visitors center and walk the path to see him. We were greater by a very friendly staff member who came out on the porch to give information about the grounds. They also have a nice gift shop and bathrooms at the site. I wouldn't suggest the pathway in the rain due to it being dirt but the statue itself is amazing! He is well kept and a joy

Right on the freeway but do not stop on the shoulder. $$$ Ticket for that. Go around to the parking lot. It is a little hard to get to there.

Really cool, free, and quick thing to do! I love stopping here! Definitely have to do it at least once!

I went with my family for a drive and since we live in Houston now we decided to stop and see the statue. There is an exit on the side of the road to go see the statue. The place has dirty restrooms and a trail to get to the statue. There were a lot of mosquitoes since there are trees and a little dirt path.

I think the best thing about this enormous statue of ol Sam Houston is that when on I45 going north or south he comes into sight way ahead of time before you even see an exit. Once there its amazing on how large this statue actually is. Not the greatest thing in Texas by far but well worth the quick stop to check him out

Sam Houston, hero of the Texas Revolution. "The Tallest Statue in the Nation of a Statesman".
Quick stop on our way to Houston. We got here late unfortunately - so we were hesitant going in and walk thru the unlit path for closer view of the statue. We were able to get a good view from the interstate though.

You can see this large majestic statue for miles if you are driving towards it on I 45 headed towards Dallas, Tx.

I've driven by this probably 50 times. Finally decided to stop and glad I did. The grounds are nicely kept and a bit of history too. The giant outdoor checkers made for a fun game, even in the 98 degree heat!

You can see this from the interstate. It is interesting and huge.

I went when I was in high school and took a picture with Sam Houston's head so now its me to go back with my daughter and have her take the same picture next to his head it's definitely not a place you spend a lot of time but if you pass it on your way through it is worth the stop

We visited the statue and continued to the Sam Houston Museum in town. A very nice family visit and Texas history.

I saw this statue while driving from Houston to Dallas- it's colossal and attracts lots of people. I do think that it's odd for them to have placed it so close to the highway though! I was one of the many cars whizzing by so I couldn't get a good look at it and it's probably a bit dangerous for people to pull over and get a closer look.

Coming into Huntsville from the south you can't miss Big Sam. Statue of Sam Houston stands guard above the neighboring pines. Interesting stop. Nice gift shop. Clean amenities.

Fun stop off of the highway. Easy to get to. Nice little visitors center with very nice staff. Would stop again.

This one place you really don't have to plan a visit to visit. All you have to do is be south bound on I-45 to Houston and the statue is standing right on the interstate. It is surrounded by trees so you will definitely catch a glimpse when closer. I personally think there are better ways of honoring someone rather than have their statue sit curb side on an interstate highway.

This is a quick attraction you can walk to from the visitor center off of 45. They have a small museum talking more about his life that how and when the statue was erected. Also a small gift shop.

We decided that we would take a road trip to Huntsville from Houston area on a beautiful crisp winter day. First stop was the statue and visitor center. It is right on Interstate 45 at the entrance to Huntsville. The personnel at the VC were very nice with good directions on how to get to our next stop. The area nearby was inviting with lots of trees and bushes. The walk to see Sam Houston was minimal. While on the way we saw just the head of Sam sitting on the ground so we took a funny picture picking his nose. Ha!
This is the world's tallest statue of an American hero at 77 feet tall constructed by David Adickes and dedicated in 1994. Everyone who drives I-45 past Huntsville sees this character.

Visiting the statue is free, and there is a small information room, and gift shop. Very friendly staff will greet you. The statue itself is 77' high, and is quite impressive up close.

Nice place to stretch your legs while passing on a long car ride. Make sure to take the next exit and loop around on 75 instead of parking on freeway. Small unique Texas gift shop and historical information room. Walking trail to statue is shaded and nice. Plenty of parking and room for busses. Somewhat handicap accessible.

Everything is bigger in a Texas y’all, you got check it out, the statue is as tall as the tall pine trees out here

On our way to Houston.....that was too cool. And the young people had never seen or heard about him. Great llsode attraction.

This was very interesting to see. The staff was very informative and friendly. It is a short walk through trees to the statue and it is amazing to see how large this is. Since there is no charge for this attraction it is worth stopping in to see.

Not much else to this. It is pretty boring with a sales shop you pass through prior to getting to the enormous man on the highway.

Everyone here was super friendly and the statue was amazing. There was a beautiful path and a cute gift shop. It is an amazing stop!

Had a hard time finding it but when we did were amazed at the size and beauty of the statue. Just beautiful.

We only slowed down a bit driving past on the freeway, looks pretty impressive, but based on the reviews here; we did not bother to stop.

It really is a neat statue for a great man in Texas History. You don't even have to stop if you don;t want to, it is right off of I-45 and you can see him clearly in both directions. But you can go see it up close and take pictures too.

This is a huge statue of General Sam Houston and a wonderful tribute to his memory. It also marks the beginning of the Sam Houston State University college area.

The 67 foot tall statue is worth stopping to see if you have a few minutes and are in the area. My wife didn't really care to go there. But it was less than five miles from our hotel. I like history and this is a good tribute to Sam Houston. It is a short walk from the visitor center.

If you have ever desired to see a really large man from the last century dressed entirely in white, with a huge cane, this is your chance.

We have been passing this statue of Houston for 20 years. We finally decided to stop and glad we did. This is a free stop with nice restrooms and a teaching moment for the kids. BTW it's a pretty big statue and makes for a great picture.

If you are driving along I-45, it is worth a stop to see the Sam Houston Statue. There is a little visitor's center and a walkway down to the statue where you can gaze up at the massive likeness of this Texas hero. There is also a statue-size replica of his face on the short walk to the statue and you can get an idea of just how huge it is. And it makes for fun photos with the kids. For a free stop with the kids, its worth checking out, as the whole family will enjoy the visit.

Passed the place a number of times but actually visited today.
Very nice visitor center.
Lovely grounds. Suitable for a nice picnic.
Statue is pretty large when you get close.
Historically significant guy and actually worth s stop.

Great to see this larger than life statue driving along I45. Every state should honor their heroes with this type of recognition.

We stopped in to visit Sam Houston on our way home! The visitors center here is well stocked with information about the area and they're very friendly. The gift shop ws fairly priced and had items for all ages! The statue in Huntsville is amazing and the area is clean and worth the stop!

Pretty cool place. The statue itself is over 60 feet!, larger than life you can say. I would not recommend stopping on the interstate. There is an exit along with a private parking lot and visiter center. There was no one there basically so great for photos

This had to be the biggest statue I have ever seen. But a great monument to a great man. Must see if you go to his namesake. Great view also from the highway.

Located at the side of a highway. Never seen a statue at the side of a road this big. I pulled off the road to stop and take a photo

This huge white stone statue catches you off guard as you are driving down the Texas I-45. We actually exited and turned around to see the statue and let our girls learn more about Texas history.

The statute of Sam Houston greets Interstate 45 travelers between Houston and Dallas twenty-four hours a day. I spectacular statue that dwarfs many of those in Washington DC.
It has easy access off of the IH 45 corridor and you cannot beat the price (free!).

This is a great little stop. Easy place to park, nice grounds and buildings, quaint and refreshing green space. The visitors center and gift shop are nice and well air conditioned! :)

Stop at the visitors centre to view this magnificent statue up close. The visitors centre has a washroom and shop and is quaint with a short trailing path to the statue. Well worth a 10 min stop.

Get your knowledge while taking a break. A nice stroll through history at the foot of a giant

You will pass this while going down the interstate. They do not have a designated pull off area so it is hard to stop and really look. But it is an impressive statue

I have visited in the past but it was well worth another trip just
to watch the reaction of my grandchildren as they rounded the
path and came up on this enormous statue. This wonderful work
of art was created by the famous David Addicks. You will also
see the mold that he used for the face of the statue. Sam is known
locally as the man-with-the-stick. A must see.

This is a good stop to stretch your legs and see something BIG. We love all things TEXAS, so this was just one more thing to see.

Sam Houston is the most famous hero in the state of Texas. He brought his family to live in Huntsville before he became a US Senator. When he was elected Governor of Texas they moved to Austin. He left the state capitol after refusing to sign session papers he left the Governor's office and returned to Huntsville. He died in Huntsville and is buried in the local cemetery. Sam Houston State University is named after him. In addition to the statue, there is a wonderful Sam Houston Museum. Not related to Sam Houston; but, worth a visit are the Texas Prison Museum and the Hearts Veterans Museum. Huntsville is a very historic city and well worth a visit.

You pass him- and say you're going to stop next time... before you know it- a year has gone by! :-) A visit (an actual stop) to the statue is well worth the exit off the highway! A quaint little gift shop/museum with bathroom facilities and snacks welcome you... along with super nice staff and very knowledgeable of the history and whole area surrounding statue and Huntsville. Stroll out to visit the big guy and you wont be disappointed. Ever wonder what's on the backside? You'll have to find out for yourself! Totally recommend for: All native Texans (I'm from NY) and newbie's like myself! Great for kids- history buffs or leg stretchers on a long trip! ENJOY! (Spring is the best time to enjoy the wildflowers along the Hwy and in front of Sam)

Very interesting. Job well done. The statue is beautiful. It is fun to go around and look at the bricks to see if you know anyone....like Dan Rather for one. The gift shop is worth a visit too.
Claudette

Entering Huntsville from the south on I-45 or TX-75 you will probably notice the huge statue, commemorating the famous general and statesman.
The statue itself is quite impressive and if you exit the interstate you will also find a picnic area, a small gift shop and restrooms, making this a nice stop.

Tens of thousands of persons drive by this lovely spot on I-45, near Huntsville, TX. While too few people stop, THEY SHOULD. The statue is a lovely tribute to one of Texas's most colorful and important figures.
Sam Houston was the only person who was governor of TWO states, led the Texas Independence movement in 1836, was President of the Republic, and eventually thrown out of office because he opposed Texas' enter into the Civil War. WOW, what a guy!
The visitor center is focused, charming, and restful. Stop and enjoy the forests, the statue, and hospitality!

Enjoyed the stop and it is a clean place to visit as you travel on I45 to or from Houston. It is near the Huntsville State Park as well. Great Photo OP on premises so bring your cameras!

While driving on Interstate 45 near Huntsville, you can’t miss the huge, 70 foot statue of Sam Houston located on the side of the highway. Superb craftsmanship on this fine sculpture in terrific detail. It’s worth the stop to marvel at, even if for 10 minutes.

It's a giant statue of Sam Houston. What else do you want me to say? Seriously though, this statue is huge. Pretty cool and pure Texas. I recommend exiting the interstate and visting upfront to really appreciate it. Worth a stop if traveling south from Dallas to Houston.

Gotta take your photo with the big guy! You'll be at the Visitors Center for Huntsville so pick up some ideas of things to see nearby. I would suggest the Texas Prison Museum and H.E.A.R.T.S. Veterans Museum personally.

We had an address plugged into our GPS but I don't think it was the right one ..... we saw this statue from the interstate and did a quick exit at the next exit and wound our way back to it. They were short staffed at the visitor center so we didn't get any helpful information but we were able to walk back around to the statue - very impressive. Kind of a cool thing to see for a quick stop and use the restrooms.

We have drove passed here coming and going from Houston to Dallas for over 30 years. So we decided to stop. This statue is amazing.

This is a massive statue of Sam Houston location alongside I45 North. If you are coming from the South you need to make sure to take the exit, which is signposted, a good bit South of the statue. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

i know it's just a big statue but it's worth a quick visit. The statue is huge. There is an additional stone head which makes for a good photo op.

There were so many times that my husband and I had driven by the Sam Houston Statue in Huntsville,Texas but we never stopped to visit. That is until December – 2015.
We were RV camping with our grandchildren at Huntsville State Park ~ which is just a couple of miles from the Sam Houston Statue. Perfect time to explore a new adventure!
The Sam Houston Statue is lit-up at nightfall and illuminates for miles before you even get to the destination. It is somewhat difficult to get to as you can easily miss the exit off of Highway-45 Northbound side. Frankly, that is one of the reasons why we hadn't stopped in the past.
However, if you would like to know very detailed history about Sam Houston you need to plan to visit this attraction. Well worth the time and effort of navigating to that area.
There is a Visitor Center and with employees that are more than happy to explain or answer any questions you might have. There's also a gift shop and clean restrooms.
Be prepared to hike. It takes a short while to walk from the parking lot to the statute but, there are attractions to see along the way and parking benches to rest. Great for history buffs! Fun attraction for a "solo" visit, couples, and families with children.
Enjoy!

Great place to stop and learn a little history of the state of Texas. There is lots of free parking at the Sam Houston Statue and Visitor Center so that you don't have to park on the interstate.
Beautiful area and fun for all ages to have your picture taken with Big Sam!

Visited a couple times. pretty cool statue of sam houston.also visible from I-45

Yes, you can see this from the freeway, but you need to get off the road and walk up to this statue. You cannot get the full awe of how tall this statue of Sam Houston is unless you are standing right next to it. It's a short walk from the tiny museum that tells how the statue cam about. Take the time to look at the museum as well and enjoy the walkway to the statue. This is the 2nd time we have been there and we enjoyed it just as much the second time around.

Nice place to stop for a little while and walk around. It has a small gift shop with interesting things.
There is not much to do there but worth stopping.

The museum was remodeled with more items and history added, the staff was very excellent and knowledgeable!

This is a peaceful little site located just a stone’s throw from a busy freeway. Well worth a stop to see one of the world’s largest free-standing statues and take ages pictures. There is a welcome center, gift shop, restrooms and some vending machines. They are currently building additional facilities, but I don’t know what they are for: perhaps conferences and events.

This statue is so big it reminds me of the old saying that "Everything is big in Texas." Standing nearly 70 feet tall there is absolutely no way you can miss this statue driving Interstate 45 unless you're distracted. It's a site to behold just from driving by and even more so close up. It is worth the visit.

This is a fun roadside stop. They were doing lots of reconstruction on the buildings so in the future more will be here. The whole point of the stop is to see the statue! You will need to walk off trail to frame the statue to get it to completely fit. The kids really enjoyed the separate head statue that is on the ground on the way to the big statue that everyone drives by.

This statue is a wonder, so large and well done. Very good experience. I can't submit my review until I say more.....

Massive welcoming site when entering Huntsville from the south and in a nice, natural setting. Wish they had one on the north side of Huntsville.

A fun visit to the giant statue. We stopped, walked the path, took a few photos, and then stopped in the gift shop.

This statue is the pride of Huntsville folks it is a landmark and it is so tall that if you're coming from Houston you can see it 5 miles away on intestate 45 , I have measure it and like I said in a good clear day you can see it.i recommend to stop by and take some pics, worth the time and the experience , highly recommended.

It was fun to walk up to the statue and appreciate its grandeur up close. Worth seeing at least once.

This statue is best observed from the highway where you are not allowed to stop. The area around the statue is so very close that the statue cannot be truly seen but there is information there to read. The information in the visitor center is very good and talks about the other attractions in Huntsville as well, like the prison visitor center and museum and the area in downtown Huntsville that has several Sam Houston exhibits. Don't go in August as they are all outside and it is hot in Texas.

We finally stopped at the Sam Houston Statue. We've always just driven on past. The route off of the highway was kinda strange but after a few minutes we were there.
There is a small gift shop and restrooms at the visitor center. The Big Sam statue itself is impressive in size, just like Texas. We snapped a few pics, made a friend and headed back up the road.
I'm glad we stopped...don't know that we'll stop again on the next trip but glad we did this time.

Not just the statue is big but Mr. Houston was larger than life. This is a quick stop off the freeway (I-45) gives a quick overview to a true TEXAS leader. The inscriptions on the statue are as true today as the day they were spoken. Two teenagers 17 & 14 enjoyed it as well.

Sam Houston is quite a historical figure for Texas, so it makes sense to have him appear larger than life. Yes, you can see the statue from route 45, but you don't really get the perspective for the size until you walk up to it. It is huge.
The visitor center doesn't open early, but you can still take the short walk through the wooded area out to it without going through the building.
There was no admission fee.

We've passed this statue for decades and finally stopped to learn more about it! Very impressive up close. The attention to detail is amazing. Nice visitor center and gift shop!

It's hard to resist the huge 70-foot statue of this State's founder Sam Houston during that drive from Houston to Dallas up I-45. A quick stop-in to the Center yields much information about the Huntsville area, particularly its many prisons and notoriety for executions, from the extremely kind matrons operating the gift shop. Take your family photos with the giant Houston visage in the small amphitheatre on the walk to the statue's base. No charge.

Stopped by the statue of Sam Houston on the way to the Sam Houston Museum. Nicely landscaped area complete with picnic tables for you to enjoy your lunch. It is a short walk from the parking lot to the statue. The bathrooms were clean. The young man at the entrance was very helpful and willing to answer any questions you might have. The souvenir shop had lots of interesting items and prices were pretty reasonable.

I have been wanting to visit the Sam Houston Statue for many years and I was finally able to stop and visit. It was an amazing Texas history lesson. The location is beautiful and the gift shop had so much for me to bring home to the wife.

A must stop in Huntsville, TX. We drive by it all the time, but finally made the stop. I'm so glad we did. The statue is bigger than life in person, has a small outdoor amphitheater, and a very cute souvenir shop. Will definitely go back.

Unfortunately 99.999% of visitors only see this statue from the highway. DO NOT PARK ON THE INTERSTATE. Take the next exit and park safely in the parking lot. Not only is it dangerous to park on the interstate, but you can be ticketed. Museum is interesting and the grounds around the statue are always nicely manicured. It's a great break to take between Houston and Dallas.

We stopped here after seeing the 67-foot white statue off I-45. It's free to visit. The gift shop area is small and old, but cute and filled with lots of historical information. We learned a lot about the legacy Sam Houston left behind. Bathrooms are clean and well kept. Nice shaded path to walk down to get to the statue.

We stopped by here on our way home from Galveston. I'm so glad we did. Nice little outdoor area, with a cute gift shop and interesting little information area. The statue is amazing. If you're visiting Texas, or if you're a native you need to add this to your list.

History on the Highway -- currently they are giving the old man a cleaning and keeping him in tip-top shape. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the history and seeing this impressive sight.

This is a great place to visit but the museum is under remodeling so it's probably best to wait until the construction is done. The highway department is also changing the exit which would be an additional reason to wait till later. The statue itself is awesome and great for photos so if you don't mind all the construction it is still a wonderful place to visit.

We stayed in Huntsville specifically to see the Sam Houston statue. There is some construction on the highway, so it took a little longer to get there. The visitor center had great information on the construction of the statue and the employee (sadly I didn't get her name) was very nice and knowledgeable. You won't spend a lot of time here, but it is worth the stop. They also had a nice gift shop.

Statue is a great pitstop during a road trip, but the address is Sam Houston Statue Visitor Center, 7600 TX-75, Huntsville, TX. The address on here takes you to the gravesite fyi

Enjoyed the 30 minute stop, walking around, looking at the statute. The gift shop has a nice variety of items, including ice cream, which our group loved. The employees/volunteers were helpful and friendly. The grounds were maintained and safe.

I'd driven passed here several times and always meant to stop by, adventually did. Was only there about 15 mins but was definitely worth it. There is a reasonably sized car park and picnic tables scattered around. There is a visitor center but I went there when it was closed. The statue is huge and you don't realize how big until you get up close. There are signs saying no parking on the freeway but people still stop there to look, apart from being dangerous the police do patrol there so best to use the carpark provided. If you want to take pictures go in the late afternoon when the sun is in the best position for them. Worthwhile stopping if you are out that way.

Nice stop on your road trip, whether visiting the Huntsville area exscusively or along the way to somewhere else. Informative gift shop/visitor center with good info on Sam Houston, a distinguished Mason and extremely important contributor to the state of Texas.

Love this tribute right on I45 that you can stop and enjoy the area and wlak over to the statue or just enjoy it as you drive by on the interstate. Everything really is bigger in Texas.

We have driven by many times, and always wanted to stop, so we finally took the time to see what it's all about... and it was awesome! Even though it was hard for me to actually find, the hunt was worth the experience. The visitor's center was really neat, with some of the nicest ladies in Texas running the place. The grounds are so pretty, and the short walk to the actual statue is beautiful. The statue itself gives me a feeling, so proud to be a Texan. Eveyone should take the time to explore this treasure.

Quite a pretentious statue. Had driven by it before but never stopped and visited. Our group was afforded a wine and cheese reception in the statue. FUN

The statue is interesting because it's so tall. I signed the guest list at the novelty shop. It's a 15minute stop. Once you've seen it, it's time to go. I'm not saying it's a waste of time, but it's nothing historical. Visit in town for Sam's grave , home and museum. That's were the history begins.

If you have time, this is a nice place to take a break and enjoy soaking in some Texas history. There are great directional signs to the statue.

Stopped here after passing the big statue several times on the highway. Its a little hard to get back to but worth the side trip. Not a big area but well kept and educational. Great place to get out and stretch and get a little education about Texas.

Loved the grounds and the statue that pays tribute to Sam Houston on the namesake’s university campus.

Very nice place.I wish i had a bit more lighting on the path for .The people running the place were polite and informative .There is a small gift shop there.I bought a little replica of the statue for $10.00. There is a small path leads to the statue where you can have a few good photo moments but other than that there is nothing to do.This whole process can be done in about 15 minutes. However its still a nice like detour and the trees around the statue smell so sweet like honeysuckle

Ridiculously huge statue along with a really cool picnic area under the pines. If it wasn't so hot it would be a nice place to hang out for a minute.

I love that feeling of cresting the hill at the mile 106 marker, driving north on I-45, and seeing Sam way in the distance. An impressive landmark as one approaches. Used to be quiet, but the increasing population in this area has made it progressively more overrun. Watch out for the dangerous and illegal parking on the shoulder of the freeway; and the staffs' incessant badgering to sign the guestbook which, of course, makes me not want to do so.

I've seen this statue from the highway many times over the years but I have never seen it up close. I didn't realize just how large it really is. Its definitely worth a visit to see this amazing tribute to such a great Texan! It's free to see the statue and theres even a little gift shop on site to get your big sam souvenirs. I would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting Huntsville

Neat statue to commemorate Texas' founding father, but not really worth stopping, unless you just want a quick look around and cute souvenirs. There was a short walking trail and a plaque. To me it would be much better to go see the larger museum in town across from Sam Houston State Universiry.

Even if it a bit obnoxious.
The story about the man is interesting and the little park at the Base makes it worthwhile.
Lovely old house is interesting as well.

This is a very nice place to take a driving break when traveling from Houston to Dallas. We have stopped several times. The staff at the shop is very nice as well.

The family and I visited the Sam Houston statue on the way home from visiting Houston. The kids enjoyed taking in the small visitor center and the large statue. Only takes a few minutes and was a great way to stretch our legs on our way home.

Living in Huntsville, Texas, we have had occasion to visit this iconic statue several times, often taking out of town visitors to see it. There is a small but nice gift shop, ample parking on the U. S. Highway 75 side as they ask visitors not to park along side Interstate 45, no doubt for safety reasons. If you visit, do walk through the "dogtrot" at the visitor center, and on through the woods to approach the statue from behind. It is very impressive both in its size and location.
It's just a big concrete statue. Don't bother. You see it from the highway. The little shop attached to it is tiny.
