If you’re visiting San Francisco, it’s well worthwhile making a day trip to Sausalito, a quaint and picturesque former fishing village just across the Golden Gate Bridge. It retains much of its original charm despite having been transformed into a sanctuary and maxi boat harbour for the uber rich of Silicon Valley.

Spent a little time here on a sunny day and got into the swing of things quickly. Yes, it's touristy. Yes, it's on the expensive side for anything of quality you might want to buy at the shops. Yes, people are friendly. Yes, you can find good seafood (and other kinds of food, too). Yes, there are fascinating boat craft moored that you can walk around and look at. Yes, you can buy trinkets and funny souvenirs. Yes, we had a lot of fun breezing around the boardwalk and nearby area. Yes, I'll go for another visit.

We went to the Sausalito Boardwalk area. There are various stores, cafes, and restaurants. There are scenic views of he water. Its a pleasant place to walk.

By Lagundi |

We went here with a big group that included a bunch of kids. It was really pleasant to just walk around and enjoy the quaint atmosphere. There were a lot of small shops around the area that showcased some unique finds. Thankfully, the weather cooperated with us while we were there, as well - it was a bright, sunny afternoon. 😊

By intrepidtraveler23 |

Some nice shops with some reasonable prices for clothes, etc. but a bit too touristy for me. When you start seeing the coffee mugs and fridge magnets I basically check out. Having said that, there are some nice clothing shops and a nice wine store featuring a lot of smalll vineyard wines. If not aware, you can take your own bottle to dinner anywhere in California. The may be a corkage fee, so call ahead. Sometimes it is as much as $50. Other places there is no corkage fee.

We hopped onto a bus from San Fancisco and went over to bridge to Sausalito. Its a bustling town with plenty of shops and restaurants plus a nice sea front.

Took the ferry across from San Francisco repeating a previous trip that I enjoyed so much. This time the ferry went direct to Sausalito rather than via Angel Island and Tiburon. Everything was as I remembered although there were far more cyclists. On reflection, my previous pleasure had been the ferry trip on a glorious day and this was a shorter trip though still glorious weather. While Sausalito is doubtless a lovely place, on this occasion it seemed overwhelmed with gift stores, many not of particularly good quality. It's a nice trip if you have time but perhaps avoid on a weekend!!

Sausalito is just beautiful. Helped that weather was glorious on day of visit. Great selection of shops an eateries, equally so the views of Alcatraz and San Francisco. Well worth a morning or afternoon visit.

By salvo68 |

I was a little disappointed compared to expectations. I was expecting a fishing village or at least a seaside village with an old style atmosphere, but to me it just seemed like a nice holiday place full of tourist shops and with a nice view, but nothing more.
However, it is nice to know that the famous song "Sittin' on the dock of the bay" by Otis Redding was born on this dock.

get yourself a clipper card for half price bay travel and get the ferry to Sausalito, gorgeous little town, great shops, great food, great atmos, enjoy a slower paced ramble.

By Kimberly S |

I live in Sausalito but always come downtown to enjoy the full moon rise right next to the hotel. The weather was perfect, calm water, barely cool air. I've stayed here as well...awesome! Within walking distance to some of the best eats in Marin and the ferry.

I took a hop on/hop off bus over to Sausalito for a few hours as I have always wanted to see it. It looks enchanting in any picture I've seen. The town is very small and touristy with a ton of touristy shops. The view from Sausalito over to San Fran is beautiful but there are so many places to get great views within San Fran. I wouldn't say it's a 'must-do' of your trip.
I also wouldn't recommend the hop on/off bus to get there as it was several bus trips and took me hours between getting to one drop off point to pick up another bus which ran the Sausalito route. Overall it must have taken me 1.5 hours to get there between bus routes and waiting time when it's probably a 20 minute car ride. If you want to see it I suggest taking the regular transit, book a tour specific to Sausalito or take a cab over and back.

One of the hidden gems in SF. I took my daughter to visit the Mini Tajmahal. We got there pretty late. It was dark, so I really couldn't enjoy taking Beautiful Pictures. We found the Mini Taj Mahal, but we'll have to plan another trip during daytime to actually see this breathtakingly Beautiful House Boat. I'll bring both of my daughter's then. The trip was a very pleasant one & can't wait to visit it once more😘

Great little town by the Bay, but dark and asleep after 7 pm on a Wednesday night - except for the glowing windows of homes on the hillside. We found a couple Sausalito trinket / tourist shops open with t shirts and magnets, etc, but any of the normal stores were closed. We were told that Mill City or Downtown had the nightlife. Quaint, pleasant, but eerily quiet and we were the only people on the streets at 8 pm.

By blueflag08 |

a great spot to walk along the water and check out the bay and all the shops and restaurants in Sausalito

By Harper |

This is a beautiful place to visit. Wonderful places to eat and cute little shops. Family friendly environment. This really reminds you of 1950’d California.

By Sally D |

We went out of season. But a few fun shops and restaurants
Easy walking to everything. Museum closed on Mondays

By Trinitytravel007 |

This place is located in a little alley way but the bikes we rented were in good condition. The man who helped us (forgot his name) did a great job explaining the differences in the bikes. There was another bike rental place that is less expensive but the also closed earlier. It was a great ride and I would definitely return.

By Chinny26 |

Sausalito is an amazing place, like a small seaside town vibe but only minutes from downtown SF. Even in the middle of summer it was enjoyable to visit, even with the millions of bikes and bike riders. The shops are nice and all the people working were friendly and enjoyable to spend time here, we stayed in an Air BNB in Sausalito for 2 nights and really was a highlight of our trip.

I am not a big fan of heavily touristy areas but i really enjoyed my time here, good food choices and a fun vibe.

By bobcats2015 |

We just spent the afternoon and walked around the bay. It may be one of the most beautiful waterfronts I have ever seen. Terribly crowded like everything else in San Fran but breath taking views. Def a must see location.

By Tomi61 |

We came back with friends since we had great memories of being here with our sons five years ago
Was as relaxing and cool as we remember
Only wish we could afford to stay here
Great place to soak up the people watching atmosphere and had fish and chips near the ferry port

By lloyd s |

Spent a couple of hours walking around Sausalito. Really quaint town. Nice shops. Great food. Very pretty spot

By nfzuk |

Well, we decided to visit here whilst on holiday for a walk around and a few drinks after a day out in San Francisco.

Worst think to do ever not only are the people extremely pretentious and snooty, the place has a very why are you here? Type of attitude.

Food, bars and generally everything stupidly expensive and poor service.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT - DO NOT PARK YOUR CAR IN ANY OF THE CAR PARKS ALWAYS USE THE STREET.

Our car got the window smashed and wait for it our babies nappies stolen yes babies nappies.

I can't tell you enough to avoid this place but if you must take every precaution to protect your stuff and have a very thick skin to be able to cope with all the snooty folk there.

By WillieMacfan |

Parking can be an issue and not free but a walk around downtown Sausalito is pleasant but mostly involves a lot of tourists. There are some restaurants and shops but the shops are definitely oriented to tourists.

By Sonali K |

An hour away from Downtown SF , stunning visuals, houseboats, marina, shopping, seafood, you need to spend atleast a day here.

By Traveler_200950 |

We love the views of San Francisco and the Bay from Sausalito. It's one of my favorite cities. Spend a little extra time and go to the Marina. Walk the docks (streets) between the houseboats. Such a wonderful change of pace and lifestyle from the hustle and bustle of the city. A very interesting part of the culture of this little town.

By kellstravs |

Loved this town!!! It didn't take us too long to find parking along the boardwalk, so we just strolled down the boardwalk and visited the shops. Lots of cute little stores... Chocolatier, Cafe, souvenir shop, clothes.... Etc. A little touristy, but worth visiting!

By Stephanie B |

This is a small village with some nice homes, shops, restaurants, and galleries. If you're a tourist, you probably won't need more than a couple of hours to see the town. It's nice to go for the views of San Francisco, and I would recommend enjoying the views from one of the waterfront restaurants along the main street. I enjoyed riding a bike around the area and then going back to the Fisherman's Wharf on the ferry.

By ItchyFeet |

This is a great little town with lots of small restaurants and shopping boutiques along the waterfront. Post Covid this would be great to come back and stay.
This trip we just walked around a bit and saw the small park at end of waterfront.

By Toowoombatourist |

A pretty town to wander through and admire the beautiful view across the bay. There are numerous places to stop and eat and stores to browse through. The ferry ride back to San Francisco's Pier 39 takes around 30 minutes and offers great views of Alcatraz, Angel Island and the bridge.

By Shelley L |

This path is broken up by multiple businesses so walking the path in a continual fashion doesn't work. Also, many parts are not maintained, so riding a bicycle or walking with someone who isn't completely steady on their feet would be dangerous.

By SurFun5389 |

Take a little time to walk down the harbor boardwalk. You will see boats of many sizes and types including two of my own boats. You can also walk down the slip fingers and view close up.

By Denis H |

Sausalito is really a beautiful town, very clean and modern with a twist of traditional California architecture.

Worth the time to visit.

By Nicola D |

Sausilito is a beautiful quaint little town over the Golden Gate Bridge from San Fransico. It is a one-street town lined with mix of restaurants, bars and pretty boutique shops. Strangely though there is only 1 (well known) ice cream shop, Lapperts, with queues down the street. It is much warmer here and less windy than San Fransisco.

By bcheong |

Drove across the golden gate bridge and here we are. Many shops and restaurants closed during xmas day, but nice to experience this little town of 7,000

By Yolyni |

A very nice walking or biking area, great views to San Francisco, better weather, plenty of coffee areas and restaurants. Nice place to spend half day.

By Giuliana U |

It is very close from San Francisco and it is a very cozy town full of restaurants, coffees and stores....you will have the skyline view of san francisco from here. If you can, have lunch in one of the many restaurants in the terrace....the views are amazing

By SOQ2010 |

Once done with Sanfrancisco do head towards Sausalito its a hidden gem.One can make a half day tour towards this beautiful harbor front, greatseafood and interesting souvenior shops.

By piper77 |

We were so lucky with the weather, this is a beautiful little village, with spectacular views. Lots of little shops, and restaurants.
So worth a visit, beautiful and peaceful

By Melissa A |

A lovely seaside town to visit, close to San Fran. Sweets cafes and shops to visit. Also nice boardwalk, gardens etc.

By JohnPaul78 |

Lovely walk along the front it's much quieter than the bussle of San Francisco. Lovely views across the bay too.

By HUTTCHAND |

We took the red bus to Muir woods and decided to have lunch in Sausalito. I'm so glad we did. What a quaint town. Get a sandwich and go eat it by the marina overlooking the ocean. We wandered around the boats, art galleries and cute stores before catching the ferry back to San Francisco's fisherman's wharf. That was a treat in itself to see SF from the bay and to sail by Alcatraz. The ferry was $12.50.

By Olala |

I’m very fortunate to be living in the. Bay Atea. Driving to Sausalito and crossing the iconic Golden Gate Bridge always makes me feel nostalgic and awed by its beauty. I still act like a tourist by taking pictures as if this was my first visit. Parking is outrageously expensive ($7.00 per hour). The lady was kind enough to let us know so we left. I don’t believed that they do this to be malicious as Sausalito and the whole Bay Area are expensive so do not hesitate to drive off. Best way to travel is by Ferries, arrive early enough so you can find a parking slot or by Uber. Sausalito is a beautiful city, with friendly people, fresh seafood and a must see if you are in the San Francisco Bay Area. Enjoy!

By SagaloutsTour |

We took the hop on hop off bus here. Had a great few hours, wandering, stopping for lunch. Really is a quiet, picturesque town and so different to SF across the water. The marina and park are also worth wandering around.

By Lisa T |

The Sausalito Boardwalk is so cute. There are lots of shops open, even on a Sunday and there are plenty of food choices. We first stopped at the Sausalito Bakery for a quick early bite! Everything was delish. Then we walked around and bought some jewelry at the Prince Edward Estate shop. Then we had a reservation for a late lunch at Scoma’s. Our table was inside but by a window overlooking the bay. We even saw a cute seal poke its head up. I will definitely go back. It’s also a quick drive over the Golden Gate Bridge to San Francisco. Breathtaking views.

By SLOJon |

There aren't a lot of city places that are going to get a great review just as a place to walk, but Sausalito is one of them. You will encounter a wonderful marina, great shops, restaurants, bars, delis, sidewalk cafes, and bakeries—all with stunning views of the bay and San Francisco. The walk is very easy. Bike rentals are available, too. You can stay here for an hour or for an entire day.

By mdgipsy |

We had heard rave reviews. Reality is lots of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, limited parking, and many high priced shops. There were many restaurants that looked appealing. It was nice to walk down by the water.

By Brenda D |

Enjoyable to walk along the marina. Great views and usually much less crowded than the main street with all the tourist shops (although those are nice, too).

By MargieV611 |

Great place to see, great selection of shopping beautiful views loved the area. Can be very peaceful or busy if you want.

By SueD193 |

We drove across the Golden Gate Bridge and stopped off here for a few hours. The weather was much clearer and warmer than in the city we had just left. Parking was a little difficult to find a space, and I expect even worse on weekends or peak times, but the little town itself was lovely. A nice mix of shops, coffee shops and eateries and a lovely walk by the water with good photo opportunities looking back across the bay towards the city. The ferry would have been a good way of getting here and it was a nice place to spend a few hours.

By Alexandre K |

Arriving in sunny Sausalito after a bike ride that took us across the foggy and windy Golden Gate bridge was a breath of fresh air. Sausalito appeared to us as a charming sophisticated residential area with ocean fronting beautiful walk that deserved more than the quick hour that we spent there. We will definitely come back.

By girlcat |

We loved walking along the water and browsing the various shops. The only drawback was we got here late on a Friday and a lot of the stores close around 6 or 7, so make sure you get here early in the day to fully enjoy what the town has to offer.

By Doctordan1 |

Beautiful seaside resort, wonderful scenery, great restaurants and bars, very friendly and happy people. I cycled across the Golden Gate Bridge to here and back to San Francisco and it was a great adventure

By Sandra F |

What a lovely place to go to after Visiting Muir Woods. After a leisurely walk about, we caught the Ferry across the Bay to San Francisco passing Alcatraz Island en route. If you get the chance it’s a beautiful way to see San Francisco

By Thomas V |

This walkway is a pleasant perspective on the Bay. I recommend a walk along here as a part of your visit to this part of the area.

By cohoman |

I was really surprised how busy it was when we tried to visit the boardwalk area on a Sunday afternoon. I just wasn't expecting so many people and bikes on the sidewalks and streets. We couldn't find any available parking in the few lots and side streets, so we decided to skip the visit and come back sometime during the weekday.

Coming back on Thursday morning was much less crowded (practically no one was here). We parked in lot #4 which was only $5 for the entire day. Note, that lots 1,2, & 3 are more expensive (especially in the summer).

Great views from the boardwalk. Lots of touristy shops and cafes. The entire historic district wasn't very long. I'm glad we stopped by but I don't expect us coming back again anytime soon.

By Mark G |

A relaxing half day trip from the Marketplace piers to Sausalito - unlike Alcatraz, just pay on the day and get the same bay cruise if you don’t want to stop at the island. Sausalito is a lovely seaside village with some great food, views and seaside walks. Ate at the excellent Napa Burger Co. restaurant and then just wandered along the boardwalk for an hour. You can ride there over the bridge - down hill and fast( keep an eye out for wayward amateurs) and then catch the ferry back. Word of warning. Queues for the ferry get long and if you miss out you wait a while. We just got on the ferry we lined up for - bike riders get priority😡

By Ann H |

We spent a morning in this beautiful area across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. Lovely weather contributed to a leisurely walk along the main boardwalk taking in the pretty colourful buildings and the views across the bay. Plenty of eateries and shops open on a Sunday morning and parking is plentiful.

By robin787 |

Beautiful town. Lots of nice shopping as well!

I had a great experience with the sunglass shop named Time After Time. When entering the store we were greeted by a very nice young lady who was extremely helpful in finding the perfect selection of glasses based on my request. I purchased a pair of Tiffany & Co. sunglasses, walked outside, down the sidewalk and within 15 minutes dropped them on the sidewalk scratching one of the lenses terribly. At first I just decided to suck it up and blame myself for being careless but, the next day we returned to the Boardwalk and I decided to go back into Time After Time to ask if there was anyway to repair them. The Owner was so very kind, he offered to have them repaired and, sent to me by Priority Mail within a week. I received them today. He was true to his word and, even through in an additional microfiber carry case.

I would highly recommend Time After Time for Designer Sunglasses.

By Geoff M |

This whole area of Sausalito is a delight. The village atmosphere is lovely and this is a very upmarket location. The shops, cafes and attractions make for a delightful visit.

By JMH1986 |

This a fun day walking around the boardwalk while visiting Sausalito. We enjoyed seeing the shops, restaurants and the boats along the water.

By Rodney P |

Take the ferry from SF across the bay and enjoy the shops and restaurants. Fish and chips to go and then return by bus to downtown (via Golden Gate Bridge)

By daanddo |

We spent one afternoon in Sausalito wondering around town, the boardwalk, having lunch, watching street performers, listening to the seabirds and enjoying the ocean breeze on a sunny, mild summer day. It was lovely, Come early it gets very crowded in the afternoon and parking can be challenging.

By Bibiana A |

If you visit Sand Francisco, you must visit Golden Gate, and consquently Sausalito. It is a very nice and calmed city. Some interesting stores, but nothing out of the world..

By Steve L |

This is well worth a visit, Sausalito is a delightful, quaint little bayside town close to San Francisco. Up market shops, bars and restaurants set along the waterfront make this a pleasant place to visit

By Marcelo D. Souza |

An incredible community. With an amazing marina. Great food locations. A good place to take a walk and eat a hamburger or ice cream.

By Gonen2014 |

The Sausaliyo Boardwalk is a classic place for a fun morning walk. On one side you can see the bay with all kinds of vessels crossing it, the flying seagulls and the city of San Francisco, and on the other side you can see cafes, shops and homes, and everything is so calm.

By Granjack |

Pretty place to spend an afternoon, several places to eat ranging from pizza and sandwiches to high end dining.
Array of individual stores , take a stroll along the shore , enjoy a coffee
You can hire a bike from Fisherman’s wharf, cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge and either ride back or take the ferry

By TravelAgentDave |

As a destination vying for your tourist time while staying in SF, it's worth being there for about 1-2 hours. It's all just another place for art galleries, trinket shops and seafood eateries. BUT here is the hot tip. Take the Golden Gate Ferry from The Ferry Building at the waterfront at the end of Market Street, stay in Sausalito for an hour or 2 and take the return ferry back. While on the 30 minute ride each way you will have ( without commentary ) views of the SF skyline, Alcatraz, Angel Island, The Golden Gate Bridge and the SF bay. The travel across the bay is worth the price of admission and you can say that you visited Sausalito.

By SteveandSonya |

We caught the Ferry across from the Ferry Building at midday. Even though it was still a bit foggy on the SF side of the Bay it was all sunshine in Sausalito. Lots of cute shops with some more upmarket souvenir ideas. The Christmas shop has some lovely SF ornaments. Went to Scoma's for lunch. We booked the day before and had a beautiful table at the front of the restaurant with great views. Would recommend spending a few hours in Sausalito. Don't panic when you see the line for the return ferry. Amazing how many people and bikes fit on!!

By LeaderInAction |

Visited this gorgeous and picturesque town after crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. This quiet place is a MUST for all SF visitors. It's so close from Sa Francisco, yet seems so far away.

Plenty of restaurants, shops and coffee shops.

The view of the bay is simply amazing, so be ready to take many pictures.

By StephenCross |

The Sausalito Boardwalk runs a long way up the bay and there are many interesting sights to see. Great for cycling, running or walking.

By Dana C |

Lots of shops, great food. Parking can be hard to find on Saturdays. But, had a great day weather was nice.

By jishenker |

So close to San Francisco, with a microclimate that is often sunny and warm when San Francisco is cloudy / foggy and cool. Great people watching. Terrific shops and galleries. Very nice food options with impressive variety. Commanding views of water and city.

By David N |

We enjoyed our time in Sausalito with a relaxed walk along the boardwalk. Fantastic views, lovely shops and restaurants and beautiful seaside parkland

By Dkazooman |

The view is awesome but the shops galleries and bars/coffee shops/restaurants outstanding. Worth the beautiful trip from San Francisco!!

By Stéphane B |

Beautiful view of the Bay. Beautiful city with beautiful restaurants offering a beautiful majority view of the Bay. A nice walk where we can see seals.

By Natasha C |

Gorgeous place to go and visit very good with souvenirs from not only Sausalito but San Francisco San Jose and other places in this area

By david k |

Get a gelato, cup of coffee and enjoy the mix of hippie shops and upscale are stores. Relax and take a breath of fresh, ocean air, it will lower your blood pressure. Park in lot 3 off of Johnson st., its only $5 for the whole day.

By Andy keen |

Never go to Frisco without taking the ferry to Saucilito.
Really lovely place to saunter around with twee little cafe's and boutique shops.
Just siton a bench and admire the views of Alcatraz and Frisco

By intudamalu |

if you are visiting San francisco this is a spot you don't want to miss, walk around the boardwalk have some ice cream take good pictures and enjoy this great little town..

By Akkapo |

We went to the Sausalito Boardwalk at a friends recommendation and were really glad we did. Nice houses perched on the valley. Cute street and nice area next to the water to walk along.

By 4remeii |

Made a quick trip to Sausalito from Berkeley. Enjoyed the shops, art and atmosphere. Fun little day experience.

By QuickWhitTravel |

Not much to see except the yachts here. The walk is peaceful, even when there are so many people walking around downtown Sausalito.

By RJK010 |

With time to spend before catching the ferry back to San Francisco we we decided to take in the sights of the boardwalk. This part of Sausalito is very laid back and, when the sun shines, it is very pretty with a slow relaxed atmosphere. Anyway my wife and I enjoyed our easy stroll calling into the many interesting shops that took our fancy. Most of them did. Certainly worth a visit and you get a close up look at Alcatraz if you are returning to San Francisco using the ferry

By Alexandra B. |

We spent an afternoon in a very pleasant way, walking around the harbor and admiring the boats. We also enjoyed a delicious Italian coffee and ate tasty Italian food at the Taste of Rome restaurant. It is a very beautiful and charming town.

By James A |

We cycled here from the bridge an easy down hill ride and was pleasantly surprised to find this beautiful little town. We only spent an hour or so but would love to go back and spend a day or two. A relaxing place with love kind people and nice restaurant

By Tsvetislava I |

It is one of my best memories of the Bay. We rent bikes to ride the bridge and reach Sausalito. Crossing the bridge was awesome, but it was very foggy, so when we reach Sausalito we were so sorprised of the weather there. It was sunny and pleasent, like we were riding miles away of SF. We enjoyed our time, near the port. There are plenty of places to take coffee or eat. Very nice town to escape the crowd of the city and it is only one bridge away.

By marshallfury |

nice relaxing walk, small gift shops and restaurants along the front. Good ferry service to san Francisco.

By nickstar101 |

What a beautiful little spot this is, just a short ride across San Francisco Bay We walked through the Main Street great little Christmas shop to get your San Fran and Sausalito tree decoration, We walked along the rocks and saw lots of crabs running to and fro. So glad we went over there

By 911deb |

We spent a couple of hours here as part of a tour. Nice views and a collection of interesting shops and restaurants. The view across the marina and bay were lovely.

By Lengtan67 |

In order to truly enjoy more of San Francisco and taking the opportunity of having quite an extended stay, I went to Sausalito by taking the ferry from Port of San Francisco departed from Gate B and arrived slightly 30 minutes later in Sausalito.

Both-ways cost USD 28 and ticket was purchased from vending machines located outside, on the right of the Ferry Building that also housed the Marketplace.

Quaint little town for a change of scenery.

Plenty of coastal cafes and restaurants offering endless of food options to choose from.

I didn't rent a bike but instead just stroll on the Broadwalk besides exploring shops in town.

Something I particularly like about the ferry ride returning to San Francisco was to see the city skyline in addition to the ferry cruising pretty near to the Alcatraz providing quite a good overview.

Tips: Queue earlier to get a good seat or spot on the upper opened-air deck to get the best views and breeze.

By rdclifton |

Gorgeous area of San Francisco Fantastic promenade area with beautiful shops deli's and coffee shops and restaurants. Took a guided tour and spent the day here in the sunshine . Sausalito is a small area just over from the golden Gate bridge and well worth a visit. Good have sat on the promenade all day just beautiful.

By Jane G |

We were on the hop on hop off bus and on reaching the Golden gate bridge we transferred on to the trolley bus which took us over the Golden Gate Bridge to a viewpoint then on to Sausalito. What a lovely place! There is a marina and various eateries and cafes. A pretty exclusive place to stay with lovely houses built on the hill overlooking the marina. We decide do to stay a while and instead of going back on the trolley bus we took the ferry ride back over the bay to the Wharf for $12 each.

By Brenda S |

After hiking in Muir Woods we went to Sausalito for lunch, as others had recommended visiting Sausalito. True, it’s a cute town and is very picturesque with all the sailboats, bay, and shops — but not a lot really to do. My husband and sons (ages 22 and 15) were bored. After driving through town and not seeing parking, we turned around and went back and discovered that there was plenty of public parking at the pay in advance lot behind the elephant statues ($3 per hour in 20 minute increments). There are several pay stations around the parking lot. You pay, print your receipt/ticket, and then put the ticket on your dash. We paid for 2 hours but it actually only took us 1 hour for lunch (although it was nice not having the stress of having to get back quickly).

By Jamie K |

My hubby biked over the Golden Gate, while I took the ferry from the Ferry Building to Sausalito, and we met up for coffee and a stroll. We had to get back for a dim-sum reservation, otherwise could have explored more, but I feel like a couple hours is plenty of time if you are only in SF a few days.

By keith r w |

We spent a little time here on the way to other activities its a nice place to walk through plenty of shops and places to eat.
Good for taking photos ,there is a very nice boat marina lots of boats to photo and good views across the bay .
There are toilets near by and taxi ranks even a place when you can go down to the waters edge.
You could easily spend the whole day here if you wanted.
So if you go to Muir woods get a tour which drops you off here if you want to spend longer than the tour allows you can always get the ferry back to S/F ,but make sure you know the sailing times which would depend on the time of year.

By Making Memories with Family |

Take the ferry from The Ferry Terminal which also offers a good view of the Golden Gate Bridge and further Alcatraz. Sausalito is a lovely, quaint town almost like extracted from the movies! Lovely city by the bay, what more could you ask more? Lots of eating places and shops. Be sure to have a few hours here. I can spend a day too :)

By Beth H |

One of my favorite places in San Fran area. Love to walk around this quaint town and people watch. Make sure that you pop into the many shops in and around the boardwalk.

By Carap413 |

Though we live here, we always take our visitors to the boardwalk and further on through town. If the weather is overcast and cold in San Francisco, it's often sunny and warm in Sausalito, which is just across the Golden Gate Bridge and is a perfect tourist destination. The boardwalk offers a delightful easy stroll for all visitors to enjoy.

By SanjaySurana |

Sausalito island is 20-25 mins drive via Golden Gate Bridge or 20-25 mins by ferry from San Francisco . The walk on the broadway along the ocean is beautiful and peaceful. The day we went it was breezy and very cold . Had a wonderful fresh Pizza at Venice Pizzeria. This place is worth a visit for ferry on the ocean and walk alongside the ocean.

By sheryl w |

Wonderful little place to visit if you want to get away from the busy streets of San Francisco. Its quaintness and calm puts you in a state of serenity that removes all kinks from your mind and body. Just sitting under the shade trees gives you a sense of peace and tranquillity that transcends you into a time that no longer exists in the world in which we live.

By Rosgriffin |

Within 20 minutes of paying a meter for 3 hours and parking, our car was targeted bye the traffic police and given a ticket for an expired meter. It appears to us that the traffic police are able to look up cars and determine they are rental cars and then they give you a ticket knowing that you will leave town never come back and probably won't contest it we are going to contest it but it's pretty obvious what's going on and I wouldn't recommend going there and parking your car at anywhere

By fiamma11 |

I think Sausalito is gorgeous and worthy of a visit. Take your walking shoes and your. camera. Great spot for people watching and strolling. Very photogenic.

It was a red hot day when we visited but it was lovely to walk around the town by the sea with the views across the bay. We saw many birds and visited some of the lovely shops. It was quiet when we visited on a Monday afternoon so was really nice to see it without the crowds.

By contradancer |

Very busy boardwalk area. Be sure to walk around the corner from the new ferry dock to see the older buildings.

My wife and I had a short stop in Sausalito after visiting Muir Woods. Sausalito looks like a pleasant place to visit.

By Jaseace |

On our recent trip to San Francisco I have to say that Sausalito was a bit of a hidden gem. We only ended up there after cycling from fisherman's wharf across the Golden Gate Bridge and finally down into Sausalito where we got the ferry back across to the wharf. We went back to Sausalito next day to explore on foot. We took the ferry from the wharf, tickets cost around $17 each return. It really is a picturesque village with shops, restaurants, boats etc. It was all very relaxing, lovely views and a nice place to visit. Walking along the boardwalk next to all of the yachts and boats kind of reminded me of when we visited Monaco. Sausalito is not a large village but it is one that I would thoroughly recommend seeing and spending the day there. I'm so glad we cycled across the bridge or we may not have found this place.

For many years, back in the 1980s, I lived just a block from the Sausalito boardwalk. I used to walk along it everyday, mostly coming back from riding the ferry to San Francisco. Now, on occasion, I go to Sausalito and walk on the Boardwalk, reliving old times. The views are amazing and there are many restaurants to try.

By andhewittscores |

After the madness that is Fishermans Wharf, a visit to Sausilito was just what was required!

This town is stunning. The houses stretch up from the bay into steep hills and it has an air of exclusivity about it. The boardwalk has to match this and does.

The set up of the town is great, with the restaurants and bars, gift shops and boutiques all retaining the charm of the town with a certain quality about it all.

Bike parks are available for anyone travelling across from SF with these and the ferry allows bikes on to take them back.

Wouldn't go to SF now without a trip across here as loved every minute I spent here.

I loved it here. What a beautiful place to stay, explore and eat. Shops were all fitting with the area and I enjoyed having a Deli lunch when there. 30 mins on the ferry from San Fran. Well worth it 👍

By Doglover51 |

A wonderful place to stroll down along the shops and restaurants and then back along the water-just charming and quaint and wonderful. Beautiful scenes, very friendly shop owners and staff, great views and really neat little treasures to find. A ferry back and forth or Uber for around $15-30 for two, depending on the time of day and day of week. Also the connecting point for Muir Woods.
Do yourself a favor and plan to visit this awesome town when in San Fran.

This is a place to go away from the hustle and bustle. Don’t expect high end shopping here it’s really small souvenir and clothing boutiques. Everyone is friendly. If you like searching for good finds then this is a place to go. We all scored really good purchases that I doubt we would have got elsewhere but it depends on what you are looking for. Great view and lovely walk. Lots of ways to get there- Uber, the hop on and off buses, ferry, taxi and we saw a lot of cyclists.Tolls only occur on the way back. There’s free wifi near the visitor centre by the ferry ticketing, and the tour buses pick up and drop off just one block over. The public restrooms are nice and clean and nearby there as well. If you like a break from all the usual stores with a nice laid back casual morning or afternoon then this is a nice break away from the city.

By Adina S |

Very nice shops along boardwalk and incredible views- a must do! also the ferry over is spectacular!

By ThorwaldVikingAsgaar |

If you have more than a couple days in San Francisco, I would recommend to take the ferry (from Port of San Francisco, Port Gate B) to Sausalito Harbour.
The ferry ride takes ca. 30 mins and cost 28 USD per person for return tickets.
Sausalito is a picturesque little town with a cute Boardwalk across San Francisco.

By GTSSurrey |

Spent a pleasant couple of hours here whilst on a longer coach trip in the area and really enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere of this seaside town with is boardwalk, quaint shops and quiet relaxing park. Plenty of restaurants for those that wanted and lots of places just to sit and people watch. A break away from the bustle of the city just across the water (or bridge) and well worth a visit. Lots of level pathways for those with less mobility, quiet shady tree line areas and easy parking for those that drive. Recommended.

By Saltyblue |

Sausalito was lovely. We enjoyed sitting by the water and walking around, browsing in the shops. There wasn't enough time to see the houseboats, but I would love to do that sometime.

By MaxJane |

A truely lovely day wondering around this picturesque waterfront village. So many beautiful shops and restaurants. The ferry across is great too ,you pass Alcatraz and the view back across to San Fran and the bridge were amazing. A must do if you are in San Fran.

By Michael H |

Love this place!! You will too!! Lots of places to eat, drink, shop, and photo opportunities!! You won't regret going!! Take the trip over on a tour package!! Fun, fun, fun!!

By JedFL |

Shopping and sightseeing fatigue ? Feeling too crowded? You'll love this quiet laid back town of Sausalito that offers its own unique experience on all aspects. It's quiet streets are lined with small quaint shops. Taste local ice cream or have sumptuous lunch overlooking the bay with the San Francisco skyline just beyond. It a great place for a nice stroll with your loved one, or grab some knick knacks here and there. Or just sit on a park bench. Found a store here with a wide choice of Stance socks. The people here are very nice. To get here, take a short 20min ferry ride from Embarcadero (Pier 1). The same ferry can take you back.

By Richy_Bobby |

We had lunch and walked around the area. There are lot of little shops, with nice views of the bay and surrounding area.

By Mark B |

We took the ferry over which I highly recommend. The views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the sailboats make it all worthwhile. Very touristy of course but good window shopping and eating on the Bay. Very picturesque and one of the best Christmas shops we have seen.

By JR |

Sausalito ! Nice place to visit by ferry ! Take a walk and talk a ferry back ! Gorgeous spot of Marin County ! Try Napa Burgers out there ! :)

By Russell S |

We visited Sausalito for an afternoon as part of our hop on hop off bus ticket. Beautiful place, great photo opportunities of San Franscico Bay. Pretty shops and nice places to eat and drink. We enjoyed a burger and an ice cream and a nice stroll. Apparently this was a favourite place of The Rolling Stones and Janice Joplin - so good company!

By Zack F |

We came here after biking the Golden Gate from Fisherman's Warf. It was a much needed break before we biked back up the hill to head home. ( most take the ferry, but I have 4 teenage boys who wanted to bike back too.) It was a really nice day outside and a beautiful walk. We enjoyed looking at all the boats and talked to a few people. It was a nice break. Not a must do, but I had a good time.

By Atul C |

We chose to do this tour on the last day of our SF visit. Visiting it felt like you had moved back in time. Small town feel with small boutique shops and local streets felt very homely. Beautiful place to visit for an hour or 2.

By Gagan_Gupta_1975 |

I reached here with Big Bus and alternatively you can take ferry to reach this place . A nice place to walk around take pictures, enjoy the history and do not miss the Big Ships crossing by .

You may also take pictures of the Private boat pier just 5 min walking distance . You may also enjoy the Famous Ice Cream ans Fish & Chips in Sausallito .

If you like to shop and want something unique this is the place. I want clothes you can't find elsewhere and this is it! So, many choices and the salespeople are not in your face. Beware the prices are not for the feint of heart! I was here years ago and it has only grown in its uniqueness. ENJOY...gave it a 4 because of the prices.

Walked the whole town before and after lunch, ice cream, walked the piers and boat areas, nice town lots to see and do.

By Karen G |

Went over the Golden Gate bridge by bus spent quit a while in Sausalito, walked around the shopping area had a lovely meal at a little café looking over to San Francisco, then got the ferry back, really lovely place to visit

By RVGIYER |

10 miles north of San Francisco after crossing Golden Gate Bridge.A great place, had past history of Ferry plying up and down to SFO during the time of Gold Rush and there after too. A great scenic beauty of Cornish along the place also hillocks on the other side

By misopiso88 |

Sausalito Boardwalk can be a bit of a mob scene but with Covid it has been much more de-densified. We got up early to walk on the boardwalk and all around the city and it was fun to see the views.

By Jen L |

Nice small town for relaxing at a cafe with beautiful view of the bay and city skyline. Shopping is not unique, but there are a few stores worth stopping by- kokopelli gallery has unique Native American gifts and jewelry and Italian jewelry and Sausalito Jewelers has fine jewelry as well. Some of the women's clothing boutiques had lovely but quite highly priced clothes. We were there on a quiet Tuesday and we were surprised at the number of galleries and cafes closed despite signs saying they were open weekdays. The walk to Caledonia Street area was just not worth it and no one seemed to know what the hours were at the " artist studios" marked on the tourist map or how far it would be to walk there ( asked several places including on Caledonia St at cafe we ate at).lovely ferry ride- make sure to get round trip ticket.

By Qualitypro3336 |

Sausalito is a picturesque town just a few miles across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. On a clear day the view of the bay and the city of San Francisco is just amazing. One can walk along the waterfront or relax with a drink in any one of the bars over looking the bay. It's a great place to celebrate with your loved ones at one of the nice (and pricey) restaurants. There is a small park with a water fountain and elephant statues. Parking is either on the street (don't allow your meter to expire as the meter maids will surely give you a expensive ticket!) or in one of the parking lots. If you are fortunate you can see Sea lions and sea otters playing in the water near the shore. I would highly recommend a visit to Sausalito.

By KeithMack |

We wanted a nice place to watch the sunset and take in some of the charm of this local seaside community. We walked the shops got some snacks and watched an amazing sunset. Well done Sausalito, well done.

By Karen R |

Sausalito was recommended to us by friends but was also on my bucket list as the ‘Dock of the Bay’. We traveled there using the hop on hop off bus so we could cross the Golden Gate Bridge, and returned using the Sausalito ferry. We had a walk around Sausalito which was beautiful, great shops and eating places and a little very nice contrast to the hustle and bustle of San Francisco. The ferry trip back away one of those random decisions you make that you’re glad you did. We had a restful trip back with breathtaking views of the bridge and the whole of San Francisco Bay. Sausalito will forever remain one of my favourite places.

By Semih A |

PLace is very nice to take a walk at sea side. Place has very nice streets and houses that we loved any of them. It was great time to take a walk here.

By John S |

We loved Sausolito and visited 3 times during our four days in SF.
The boardwalk provides a pleasant walk with great views of the harbour and across to San Francisco.

By ozpix |

Spent a couple of hours here after arriving on the ferry Lots of nice little shops and galleries to explore and pretty seaside views.

By UPSKenny |

Great little town by the bay. Plenty of places to shop and eat or just to walk around and view the boats in the marina

By Alexander T |

We are in Sausalito with my son who is here for the first time in California. It’s full of shops and restaurants. In a sense, it is like Solvang near Los Angeles, interesting with a different theme, but worth visiting especially when you have a very good guide/driver like Douglas of Big Bus

By dmurray713 |

Sausalito is a great half-way adventure "out of" San Francisco. We took a ferry from Fisherman's Wharf (which was a lot of fun in general, got great views of Alcatraz, the bridge, and downtown) to get to Sausalito. There's lots of good stores and restaurants all along the bay walkway. Very nice for just relaxing and enjoying the calm atmosphere with the views.

By Dean V |

You can take some wonderful pictures of San Francisco across the water. The walk along the Bridge way leads to several wonderful little shops to browse and buy in. Wandered into Only In Sausalito and bought a hooded jacket for the cool nights. Excellent price. Stopped for Ice Cream and sat outside with the locals.

Really a nice visit.

By Denise O |

We just happened to arrive here after crossing the GG bridge and we ended up staying, the views are awesome, lovely older homes set on the hills, lovely little mom and pop stores and coffee shops, plenty of restaurants. A definite must do.

By Trish B |

Just across the golden gate bridge from San Francisco. You can also take a Ferry over. Cool town with a lot of shops, cafes, restaurants and a marina. Sailboat are everywhere. It’s close to Muir Woods also. Has a great ice cream shop where the line is out the door (Lapperts).

By Alan S |

always great to walk along, love the seal statue, venice sandwiches, angelino`s and trident. shops cheap and expensive side by side. see an assortment of dogs being walked.

By Ready2Go2008 |

This is an expensive and not at all unusual tourist town.
Yes, there are nice views or San Francisco from the harbor, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there.
There are many cutesy, expensive seaside towns in the world -- nothing extraordinary about this one.

By kumar4world |

Got there in the night for dinner for the very first time. They gave me $66 parking ticket. I skipped several parking spots and finally found one and parked but still got a ticket. I clearly wasn't able to see the notice board as it was under the tree which blocked the view. I appealed and they didn't even considered. Even big cities like San Francisco doesn't charge such huge amount. I will never visit this city again!!

By DanielB. |

Great place to be and visit
If you are near the golden Gate
This place is a must

Beautiful small Cali town
By the water
Beautiful houses
Good food
And just looks perfect place

By MLLarge |

We spent an afternoon here and it was lovely. We were lucky with the weather albeit the unusual sunshine in October was contributing to fires in Marin County which meant power was switched off in the town (power was causing so of the fires). Part of the enjoyment of the trip was taking the blue and gold ferry via Angel Island which was an unexpected gem of a national park.

Sausalito was beautiful and peaceful with a lovely boardwalk and marina

By rdclifton |

A short drive or walk from San Francisco Golden agate Bridge over to Sausalito it is so beautiful you can see raccoons playing on the beach beautiful promenade amazing coffee shops restaurants bars gift shops can’t wait to visit again

By ana carolina f |

There is not much to do around the city except stroll between the shops, cafes and restaurants. It is a lovely way to spend time and relax.

By snerd45 |

Pretentious locals trying to flog cheap Chinese made tat to tourists, or even more pretentious locals surrounding themselves in a cone of noise. Food and drink prices were unbelievable. The only saving grace was the view across the bay

By Rola |

I didn’t imagine that place like this,floating restaurants,amazing views,wonderful weather..
We enjoyed the trip ,had our lunch, browsed the small gift shops..
You can spend 2-3 hours here..Don’t miss it!

By J R M |

Sausalito is a small town with a quaint main strip and adjacent boardwalk with nice views of San Francisco Bay. The stores are mostly tourist fare, cafes, restaurants and nothing much more spectacular. Parking is available at one end of the strip. A good hour or two can cover a walk through if these shops. A nice diversion for tourists of Sonoma or San Francisco.

By SunnySis60 |

Love looking at the variety of art and deco shops with jewels and objects of interest! Stopped for snacks and a drink at a lovely upscale restaurant with great view of the harbor after a ferry ride over from Pier 39.

By lotusdesigns |

This is a lovely walk with views of the bay, there are a lot of little shops and eateries along the way. People hire bikes and ride from fishermans wharf over the bridge.

By Michael |

We headed up from San Francisco to get out of the city for a day and were really impressed. We just drove and found a space in the main car park which was pretty cheap. A short walk to the main shops and ferry port. Loads to look around and plenty of places to eat or grab an ice cream. A great place to look at San Francisco from a far with a very chilled atmosphere.

Worth viewing and gives you a chance to drive over the Golden Gate Bridge.

By Taylor B |

Sausalito, located on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, is an iconic destination in the San Francisco Bay area, like Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz and streetcars. It features sweeping bay views, hillside homes and a beautiful waterfront. And it has a boardwalk. Not one grand boardwalk but one beautiful waterfront trail and four sections of boardwalk of various length and charm. Start with the Bridgeway Promenade, a quarter-mile stretch that stretches from the corner of Richardson Street and Bridgeway in the south to Yee Tock Chee Park in the north. It offers the most scenic views of San Francisco Bay and the San Francisco skyline. Sausalito's southernmost boardwalk is a 350-foot stretch over Tiffany Beach, which is accessed at the end of Main Street and the corner of Richardson and Bridgeway. It offers the best views of the luxurious hillside homes. The longest stretch of boardwalk in Sausalito is located along the Sausalito Yacht Harbor north of Downtown and the Ferry Landing. It begins at Spinnaker Point and follows the waterfront all the way to the Sausalito Yacht Harbor. Next is the most overlooked area, the Schoonmaker Point Marina Sausalito Boardwalk, which is well away from the crowds that prefer Downtown and Bridgeway Promenade. This 450-foot-long stretch is lined with palm trees and features beautiful views of the ships moored in the harbor. It also connects with Schoonmaker Beach, a very relaxing spot for a picnic. Or if you are looking for a snack, stop at Le Garage or Joinery Beerhall or Seafood Peddler.

By Jayce2016 |

Extremely artsy area with galleries, shops and restaurants. Completely different climate than across the bay. It's not uncommon for it to be 20 degrees warmer than in San Francisco. It's a nice escape from the crowdedness of SF and only a short ferry ride away.

By Wolf k |

Sausalito is a very charming little place some unique shops, pretty houses up on the hill, waterfront restuarant with great view of san Francisco but the houseboats that are really not houseboats was really my it special.

By northernk |

Very pretty town and area, there is a reason the prices are high, only so much land and pretty housing and area to go around. That being said as a day tripper it's a very nice and picturesque with views of the bay and San Francisco, and beautiful clear skies on the day we visited.

By Kittyme2 |

Great place for a nice afternoon of shopping and dining. So many cute shops and many great restaurants. Great place for a walk along the water.

By Amrita P |

Visited sausalito beach, park, downtown on 3.6.18,we could easily get parking. A must visit place for all tourists, it is beautiful seashore from where we watched ships with sail, motor boats, big ships sailing in the sea water. The white ships look so pretty that we clicked some of the best shots. One can take a ferry from Sausalito to pier 41 of Sanfrancisco. There is a beautiful park on the beach side which was spread with the golden light of setting sun, some rocks are there which take to little inside the sea,we could see the seal swimming. It is a hour our where many personal boats of different designs, looks at parked, treat to watch them closely. The downtown street is good for shopping and has jewelry shops, cloth shops, souvenir shops. Good place to eat as well, variety of eat outs from fine dining to average eat outs. We ate nice yoghurt ice cream in waffle which was decorated with chocolate and nuts, nice it was. The downtown street has in front of it the beautiful sea with ships and on the back pristine hill with many small houses, after the sunset, the hill was lit with lights from houses as if jewels are doing on the hills. It is a pleasure to carry the sweet memories of sausalito.

By LWRFL |

I could walk here every morning and just soak up all the breathtaking views - and then enjoy some fun people watching too! Plus there are really fun shops and restaurants along this stretch too.

By milliesmum2016 |

I have to tell you that I was a bit underwhelmed by Sausalito, given all the hype you hear and read. It's a perfectly nice little coastal town with nothing in particular to commend it. Nice, I guess, if you are craving a break from the highrises and bustle of downtown San Francisco and probably a really nice place to live if you want the quite life in close proximity to city hustle.
The shops are, by and large, the sort of tacky old souvenir shops that you find anywhere. There are a couple of interesting clothes and shoe shops, if you're in the market.
The Marina is pretty amazing - so it's worth taking a walk in that direction.

By elaineh00per |

Sausalito is a wonderful ferry trip on the Blue and Gold Fleet. There you can do your own walking tour of the bay front. Restaurants are wonderful there and so are the shops. Flowers are abundant. It is a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco.

By DipuKV |

Lovely area for a stroll. The place is teeming with beautiful houses, lovely restaurants & superb views. Great combo of man made beauty & nature’s aesthetics.

By Jose A |

This is a small town at the north side of the Golden gate of you go in your rented car stop in the north side of the golden gate and walk the bridge. There is a big parking lot and is free. Sausalito is a small town with a lot of shops and good restaurants . The best time is at mid morning to reduce the high volume traffic.

By delacourt |

After cycling the Golden gate bridge and having lunch in Sausalito we took a lazy stroll on the boardwalk before getting the ferry back to San Francisco.
I was very relaxed and lovely to stroll and look at the shops then the yachts/ boats in the habour.

By 2MacksAUS |

Sausalito is a 30minute Gerry ride across the Bay from Pier 41. It is beautiful and the Boardwalk has a feat range of shops and restaurants that caters for most tastes (at good prices). The trip across also gives you a great glimpse of Alcatraz and the views across to the Downtown area are simply stunning. A must see location if you are visiting San Francisco!

By adventurefamily05 |

Cool place to walk around and shop a bit. Some nice stores. Restaurants are middle of the road. Nothing to knock your socks off.

By Rick-Rozzi |

Spending 5 days in Frisco to see all the sights. Coming from Texas to escape the heat. We had spent the morning hiking in Muir Woods and wanted to spend the afternoon in Sausalito. Pleasantly surprised on the length of the boardwalk with the numbers or shops and diners and a few restaurants. Parking wasn't bad as there was a few large parking lots where you could pre-pay for a set amount of time. I think we paid about $12 for 5 hours. Seemed like visitors came over from San Francisco by either car, ferry, bus tours, uber or they biked over the Golden Gate Bridge. We walked from shop to shop and had diner at the Trident. Turned out to be a lovely day. The only negative I could say about Sausalito is that there is one main road that everybody either drives, walks or bikes on. There are people walking or biking across the street and not really watching what they are doing, so you need to be extra cautious. Also, since there is only on road to drive on, every seems to drive very slow and cautious which makes sense to me, but from the short time we where there, it seemed that a few of the locals were frustrated with the tourist which did not make sense to me.

By midwaytoheaven |

What a fun cute walkway to causally stroll along when in Sausalito. The boardwalk offers some awesome views of the both the closeup and long distant views. Delightful fun area. MY RATING: 9/10

By aphpixels |

Nice to go for a stroll after dining at one of the surrounding restaurants but there's nothing particularly special or remarkable about the location.

By Gordon C |

Walking or biking across the Golden Gate bridge is something almost everyone does when visiting SF. So why not just keeping going for another couple miles (downhill!!) and visit this charming Mediterranean hillside town. Ok, it's not cinque terra but it's as close as it gets in the US!

Sausalito is historic and picturesque and provides stunning views of San Francisco rising majestically from the Bay and is full of wonderful shops, art galleries, restaurants, bars, a park and beautiful waterfront.

Back in the 1940's Liberty Ships were built here to the tune of dozens every month. There's also a fascinating model of SF Bay that is practically a city block big worth visiting.

After your visit there's no need to hike back uphill and across the bridge either, just hop on a ferry back to SF and enjoy a beautiful ride across the bay.

By June S |

Thank goodness my son recommended we come to Sausalito, what a beautiful place. We wandered along the boardwalk with beautiful views over the water to SF and the Golden Gate Bridge. The tourist information centre was very helpful and friendly.
We wandered around for a bit just enjoying the atmosphere before our visit to Muir Woods which was also wonderful. On our return to Sausalito we decided to do some wine tasting in Bacchus & Venus and what a lovely experience this was. The shop had an extensive cellar of wines and the staff were great, we also bought a cheese platter to go with our tasting, just perfect. Although we never made it to Napa Valley due to lack of time, we really enjoyed our wine tasting experience in Sausalito.
Having crossed to Sausalito over the bridge by car, we went back over the water by ferry, a short crossing with a stop off at Tiburon on the way. All in all a wonderful visit. Sausalito is a must when you visit SF.

By Henning Logstrup Hansen |

This place, Sausalito, next to the bay, so pretty. It's really the place for shopping, cafe's, restaurants, but also for wine tasting, like Madrigal at Bridgeway and others.
The area will take you with a storm. We had our lunch at the Lighthouse, 1311 Brigdeway, where you also can get danish herring fish... just go for it

By shetty782019 |

Great place to see as a tourist. The city is beautiful with a lovely drive to reach Sausalito . The food was excellent on the boardwalk at Bar Bocha.

By Mark42139 |

It's a very quaint town, and the boardwalk is very nice to walk along. There are many shops to browse as well.

By ddmullis |

If you enjoy quaint towns with art shops, coffee bars and amazing views of the water this is a great place to visit

I highly recommended walking the Golden Gate then grabbing a tour bus or uber to come into this amazing town

The ferry back to pier 39 was a great experience

By Rumples |

The Sausalito Boardwalk moniker can cause a bit of confusion. It actually refers to three different stretches by the water in Sausalito, only two of which feature boards underfoot. The morning we visited, the Bridgeway (main street) Promenade seemed to be the most popular of the three. It has a concrete surface throughout the village center and then adds a lower level with asphalt and rocks for a path. From the ferry dock, we walked to the left, past shops and restaurants on both sides until we reached the long open stretch by the water with the two levels. San Francisco and Golden Gate Bridge views remained obscured by fog, but a seal lion sculpture in the water was nearby and clearly visible.

Toward the southern end of the promenade, an actual boardwalk begins with the water on one side and private residences on the other. The business district was long gone, so we decided to turn around. We also walked the boardwalk north of the ferry pier to the Seafood Peddler restaurant. The top sight along this stretch for us proved to be two yacht harbors absolutely filled with boats. Few visitors strolled here. They seemed to be mostly shopping or dining at restaurants. As desert dwellers, we much preferred being close to the water.

By Karim Maarouf |

Sausalito is a short ferry ride from San Francisco. I actually came here by bike from there. The boardwalk is very nice. You can see lovely homes in the hills and the whole bay. There are so many cozy cafes and restaurants. Such a nice break from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco.

By KamGross13 |

If you are visiting Golden Gate Bridge, take a walk down to Sausalito -about 20/25 minutes on foot. It's a picturesque little town with lovely cafes, art galleries and shops. It has a great holiday feel to it. You can then take the ferry from there directly to Pier 39 and see the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz from another angle. The ferry takes perhaps 15 minutes not more and is cheap.

By Walther O |

Love it, the whole area is full with shops and restaurants to indulge yourself with a nice meal or just a shop spread, this location is wheelchair friendly with ramps on the sidewalks and if you need to go up in the hill you will need a taxi because is really incline

By Leigh & Lauraine |

Any trip to San Francisco should include a trip to Sausalito for lunch and stroll along the beach front . A very beautiful setting with stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge & San Fran skyline

By ValentinC |

We took a Blue & Gold boat from San Francisco near PIER 39. The crossing was nice but we were so impressed by what we found on the other side. Great little shops and restaurants with views for San Francisco.

By Judi S |

After years of hearing about how charming Sausalito is, I was disappointed -- a few streets w/ tourist shops, some restaurants, nothing so special. Best part was the ferry ride to get there -- you get close to Alcatraz for some good pictures, also good views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

By LaModena |

Reminds me of Geneva, IL, enhanced with the waterfront and filled with Art, restaurants and cool vibe and atmosphere. Wouldn't mind coming here for a couple of weeks. Nice town

By MPP2703 |

Enjoyed a walk along the boardwalk in the afternoon. Lovely sunny day, great views of SF, my only slight gripe, the number of cyclists all over the pavement/sidewalk. So many places to stop and eat, so well worth an hours of anyone's time.

By Evs |

Beautiful ride from the San Francisco ferry. Cute shops and bars. Beautiful views. Try the tequila bar as soon as you come in. Great food.

By Kay G |

I would highly reccomend visiting this place, its a lovely little town with great views and places to eat.
Some lovely ships too

By Pjvmunro |

very "vibey", lots of places to spend an afternoon with friends... pubs and restaurants abound. you can also drive a bit further and experience the Tiburon flashy scene!

By Julie W |

caught the ferry in San Fran half an hour later arrived in Sausalito, wandered up through the main street, very tourist focused ,expensive galleries, ate in a great bar with a lettuce wrapped burger and beer. Watched seals under the jetty before returning on the evening ferry. bought some socks from Soxalito shop, and a pretty dress for grandaughter in another boutique shop. Great toy shop too.

By Localresident105 |

Great way to spend an hour or two wandering along the shops, interesting blend of retail and eating places.

By CantsitstillJohn |

Walk off that clam chowder and come to the Sausalito Boardwalk. Enjoy shopping or just people watching.

By Gabriel M |

A few kilometers across the Golden Gate Bridge, is the charming city of Sausalito. Very little city with a lot of coffee shops, bars, restaurants and gift shops. Pretty much everything is on the boardwalk right next to the ocean.

You can go by bike, car (taxi, uber) or by ferry boat. I don't remember exactly how much we paid for it, but is not expensive at all.

By SouthernBelles98 |

Sausalito is an incredibly scenic and quaint seaside town, and the boardwalk is well maintained with lots of beauty to see. There are ocean and marina views as well as garden areas. The boardwalk is centrally located and near lots of shops and dining steps away.

By Andy N |

This is a fantastic place picture perfect, you can hire a bike and ride across the Golden Gate Bridge. Unfortunately the fog was really bad the day we were going to ride over you wouldn’t have known you were on the bridge. We ended up taking the ferry both ways , Result. there are restaurants along the seafront and a park area if you bring a picnic. Bring sunscreen as it tends to get very hot and not much of a breeze.

We cycled here from SF and really enjoyed our day. Sausalito looked very lovely but it was horrendously busy (lunch time on 4th July wouldn't have helped that!) and we couldn't get in the shops and cafes so didn't stay here long,

My main bug bear is we read a lot of reviews about this Boardwalk but couldn't find a boardwalk anywhere! We also
Couldn't find the off road cycle path beyond the town.

If I was ever I'm SF again I would definitely come on a less busy day, and I would ask some questions in advance to find out where the boardwalk is!

By Fer Q |

Definitely worth a trip from SF, what a beautiful set of shops, restaurants and cafes. Finishing of with a fantastic view of SF…

By Ianbb8 |

We visited from San Fran and cycled here across the bridge. What a great little place so close to the city. Lots of little shops to visit with lots of nice bars and restaurants. Our only complaint was that we didn't get the chance to spend more time here.

By GandNH |

Headed to wine country, but decided to make a stop here first .... ended up spending the day. End to end the walk is a few miles of easy walking and offers it all from working waterfront to nice restaurants and parks. It provides a nice downshift from the hustle of San Francisco. Parking is an issue with limited availability and almost all spots metered with a 3-hour limit. The meters do take plastic.

By tonytt_11 |

This is a definite must visit area, pick up boat from along pier, pleasant trip across harbour passing in front of Golden Gate Bridge, ideal photo opportunity. Although it doesn’t appear to be very widely advertised it is a very relaxed and lovely area to spend a few hours chilling out eating in numerous restaurants and shopping in various nice quality shops.
If you don’t fancy the boat trip you can drive over this Golden Gate Bridge and it is only a short distance further on. The Big Bus also visits here on one of its journeys.
I cannot comment on car parking here as I traveled by boat.

Sausalito in Marin County is a wonderful place to laze about. It is a heritage of inspiration for celebrities such as Otis Redding and Santana. The wonderful view of San Francisco across the water and the lovely shops and restaurants make this a must visit place.

I particularly loved Lappard's ice creams.

Go visit.

I am a local but I do enjoying coming into Sausalito from time to time on a nice day to enjoy the views of the bay. Some of the best views of the San Francisco skyline and bay bridge. Stores are over priced and touristy. Some really good restaurants some which are expensive but with awesome views of water front. There is a public walkway by the boat harbor area. Walk all the way down to the water for a beautiful view. One of my favorites.

By Kevin M |

When I lived in San Francisco this was my favorite day trip. I would go down to the ferry building to take the trip. Have of the fun is the ferry ride. If you can day it on a day when the fog is only coming on the bay while SF and Sausalito are clear you get an added "cool" experience. When the ferry, which is kind of noisy, enters the fog. The sound goes away and you get this feeling that you might not know what to expect when you get out of the fog. Sort of like an Twilight Zone episode. Sausalito has too many fine restaurants for me to review here when so many other reviewers have already submitted.I do recommend checking out the eclectic shops and galleries.

This town on a beautiful sunny day is reminiscent of the mediterranean. The boardwalk is a nice walk and the town has good restaurants and shops.

By Tasha S |

Nice, quite, place to walk around and spend a few hours. Cute little shops and places to eat. Easy to walk, not a lot of traffic.

By Phi Somchai |

This is a very nice and scenic town by the bay. There are many interesting shops here selling novelty and collectable items. You can also find lots of dining outlets here too.

A good place to spend half day after you have visited the Golden Gate Bridge.

By Justin S |

Sausalito is the coolest little city just over the Golden Gate Bridge from SF. A local friend I met suggested I check it out and it was well worth the short drive over for lunch and the views.

By mkma |

A great way to enjoy a day trip here, the walk can be as long or short with sights and shops for distractions along the way. If you are keen and able, continue on to the trail that will lead you to the Vista Point/Golden Gate lookout.

By Claudetteth |

If you are visiting San Francisco and want to do something a little different, take the ferry and head over to Sausalito. Be sure to head over to the San Francisco Ferry Building (it's the historic looking one with the big clock tower) as this ferry ride will give you excellent views of Angel Island, Alcatraz and San Francisco on the way to Sausalito. The ferry ride is 30mins long and you must work your way to the back of the building to find the vending machines for tickets. As soon, as you buy your ticket you can line up and wait for the ferry. We bought a return ticket and were able to board the ferry that took us back to pier 41 - this gave us an opportunity to explore that area upon our return.

Sausalito is a quaint little area North of San Francisco. It is very pleasant place to go and stroll along the streets and enjoy the shops and restaurants. The boardwalk will talk you along the water where you will explore marinas and restaurants.

We arrived on the Blue & Gold Ferry on this sunny May Sunday morning and the ferry we were on was crowded with pedestrians and bicyclists.

It’s your somewhat typical tourist attraction; the usual souvenir shops, specialty shops – arts & crafts and restaurants. The most busy tourist area is about 4 blocks long and 1 block up from ocean side.

We spent a few hours window shopping and wandering around the main tourist area and did not go off the beaten track. You can see the San Francisco skyline and Alcatraz from the waterfront area.

We eventually stopped for lunch at Copita, a Mexican restaurant. See my review. While we were having lunch on the patio there was a Portuguese parade - Festival of the Holy Spirit on this Pentecost Sunday.

If you’ve biked over the Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito is a good spot to take a break and have lunch. If you don’t want to have a restaurant meal there is at least one deli (Venice Gourmet) where you can custom make your own sandwich for take out. You can also order sides.
Another food outlet, a hamburger take out next to the Copita restaurant, was doing a thriving burger business.

In total we spent about 4 hours before heading back on the ferry.

Overall, an above average experience for me that rates a 3.5 out of 5. Your mileage will vary!

Notes & Tips
• The Sausalito ferry terminal is less than a 200 yard walk to the “main” street Bridgeway. The ferry terminal serves both ferry companies - Blue & Gold and Golden Gate Ferry.
• Check the Blue & Gold ferry website for additional information. Tickets $12 for adult and $7.50 for a senior. Bicyclists can reserve a “parking” spot on the ferry. Bicycle parking lot available in Sausalito.
• Golden Gate Ferry operates out of the San Francisco Ferry Building. This ferry’s ticket cost for an adult is $12 and $6 for a senior, one way. Check the Golden Gate ferry website for additional information.
• For flexibility and depending upon where you wish to disembark in San Francisco, you can purchase a one way ticket and then make a decision on the return trip as to whether you want to disembark at the Ferry Building or Pier 41. That is, take the Blue & Gold or Golden Gate Ferry.
• Our original plan was to visit Sausalito and Muir Woods to maximize the use of time on this side of the water. We decided against Muir Woods because we were there a couple of years ago. If you do not have a vehicle or you are not on an excursion, you can go by bus. You will need to book the bus in advance for which there is a nominal charge. You cannot go to Muir Woods without a reservation. Go to the Muir Woods /state park website for additional information. Do the research and decide for yourself. If you have never been to Muir Woods I would recommend it. If you’re going to do both attractions, you should leave as early as possible in the morning in order to spend time at both locations – Muir Woods first and then on the way back stop in at Sausalito for some lunch.

By OSUfanHouston |

To say its just a rest stop on your bus tour is not giving credit where credit is due. Its a fantastic little marina town with sweeping views of the bay area if you saunter down to the shoreline. Fantastic artist shoppes and novelties for pictures or purchase, snacks, trinkets and unique finds are available without much hunting.

Plenty of time to just grab a gelato, coffee and danish and enjoy the fresh air.

Not unlike every other marina stop up and down the California coast with its souvenirs and snacks, this one has expansive views to offer for free- unlike any other.

Relax, enjoy and savor the moment.

By Leoni H |

Sausalito is pretty and the boardwalk is great. It is reasonably wide, the surface is good and there are great views of the bay and SF. However, the ambience of Sausalito has been destroyed by the hundreds of tour bikes that invade the village daily.

By BjarkeMChristensen |

If you enjoy life, sailing or just the sea, then this is something you must not miss. We were close, but luck brought us here for a quiet afternoon. Or as quiet as it get here. Worth the hours if you like water and the good life :-)

By TravelGoddess61 |

If you can try to go mid-week to avoid all the tourist crowds in Sausalito. The walk along this boardwalk is very nice and there are areas where you can walk out on the docks where the boats are. Or you can just walk along the wood boardwalk and be jealous of al the fabulous yachts, boats, and sailboats and wonder what it would be like to be an owner or rich and famous.

By Danny B |

Take the ferry to Sausalito if San Francisco is too cold for you...quaint little touristy village where the wealthy residents enjoy the solice away from big city life🙄
Plenty of restaurants and a hamburger place that's been there for decades. Watch the hamburgers cook through their front window.

By Heather M |

Sausalito looks like it was once a nice area but is looking pretty run down these days. Save yourself the time! It was disappointing ☹️

By my2grls98 |

First time visiting the area! Beautiful place! Beautiful weather! Can’t wait to go back! Lots of cute shops and little restaurants!

By BEDSBLONDE1967 |

Lovely little village to wander around, had coffee and a lovely walk in the area, very relaxing and whilst only over a bridge, a very different pace it seems.

By Michael K |

The term “Sausalito Boardwalk” is used by various sources to refer to three different places in Sausalito. This review is about the section from Plaza Vina del Mar to the Pelican Yacht Habor. It was a pleasant walk along the waterfront, but you can't see San Francisco from this vantage point. Near the northern end, if you venture out on Johnson Street towards the harbor, you can see the Taj Mahal houseboat, a photographic curiosity and a hidden gem in Sausalito.

By Svetlana T |

We visited San Francisco and many people tell us go to see Sausalito...We try to visit it on Sat and the place was absolutely packed. No place for parking...No place even park the car for lunch.
We have no choice but drive through town and stop outside.
So if you are planning visit find parking in advance.

By A. Crown Jewel |

One of my all time favorite towns! Rent bikes and ride the streets of Sausalito. Grab the ferry to the city. The views are spectacular! The town is friendly and filled with art galleries, yummy restaurants and unique shops.

By Rockfortress |

We enjoyed our day in Sausalito, overlooking The Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco. A little quieter and a lot less busy than San Francisco, Sausalito offers fine dining, shops, bakeries, and beautiful sights.

We got some beautiful pictures of The Golden Gate Bridge at Horseshoe Bay. From there we parked our car on Bridgeway and walked the town. We walked all the way over to Waldo Point Harbor (Gate 6) where there are beautiful floating homes. You can walk the piers and see how people live life on the water. Just beautiful!

You can spend as little as an hour to as much as an entire day in Sausalito.

By bbbob84 |

Beautiful Marina along the stretch of boardwalk we found. Sailboats and Powerboats as far as the eye can see in both directions. A nice selection of restaurants and shops close by. Parking in town spots is limited to three hours and at a cost of $4.50 as of this writing for the full three hours. We were able to walk along the floating docks to the ends for some great photos with no issues. A pleasant experience if you enjoy this type of activity.

By fulmen |

We went near sunset, it is a charming small town with many reataurants, shops, and a long street to walk around and take photos. We went by ferry from pier 41

By Jezz LD |

I joke, but Sausalito was incredibly nice compared to the wind and grey just 2 miles away on the SF side of the Bay. Not sure how, but it was glorious.

Obviously this small, Bay-side, hill-side town is the place to stay or visit when you do not want to be in the city. And you can see why: it is quiet, quaint, has niche sales outlets (ok there is one Starbucks), smells of eucalyptus, has wonderful views and plenty of mooring for a yacht.

As a last chance respite from the bus ride back over the wind-whipped Golden Gate Bridge or a soft rest from your saddle, Sausalito is the town to go to.
And they have otters...that’s a positive thing to see near a city.

By JeLundgren |

Sausalito is such a beautiful small town, enjoyed the boardwalk and the romantic atmosphere all over. Quite packed with tourists but not something that ruined the experience.

By valerio v |

Nice little town with its promenade overlooking the bay and Frisco, clubs, shops, houses on the sea, etc. 30' by bus from Frisco, pleasant to spend an afternoon relaxing.

By Clivey57 |

Very busy with tourist, nice aray of shops & eateries, great views of the Bay Area, Alcatraz, wharfs at downtown San Francisco, people fishing, spoke to one he said caught 3 rays but was hoping for a Halibut.

By JonBond |

It was better than the hustle and bustle of SF! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the tourist attractions of SF, however, if you want to "get away" for a relaxing, chill, quaint, peaceful town, then Sausalito is the place to go visit.

Small shops, restaurants and just a relaxing vibe that you get when you enter the town. The views, the atmosphere and the location, go see Sausalito, as it is a precious gem.

By Aimyourheart |

The boardwalk was filled with darling shops, delicious food, fresh air and fun! We could have spent days just enjoying the view, exploring each of the shops and tasting something from every restaurant. It was clean, busy, but not crowded, and the people are very friendly!

By George H |

After the hustle and bustle of a very busy San Francisco it was a wonderful and pleasant suprise to visit Sausalito . The visit was included in a bus tour of San Francisco and The Golden Gate Bridge. When we crossed over the Bridge there was a optional shuttle service available to Sausalito a mere 10 minutes away. We were so glad that we went. Directly across the Bay from San Francisco what a total contrast a a beautiful tranquil Place with restaurants, kerbside cafes, boutiques art and gift shops . A must visit

By John K |

Nothing special about this place. The views to the Bridge are great and over to San Francisco. It's very exclusive with lots of expensive homes.
It's nice but overrated I think.

By missinky13 |

Beautiful area with lots of shops and restaurants to choose from. The harbor area is lovely as well. We stopped in after a morning at Muir Woods which was convenient, but we were pretty tired so we didn't spend as much time as we had planned. The atmosphere is great. Highly recommend it, but I did enjoy Carmel by the sea more, that is why I gave 4 instead of 5.

By Rayangel |

A wonderful place to visit either via Muir Woods and Sausalito Tour, private transport, ferry or City Sightseeing Tours out of San Francisco. We went with the former tour and they gave us the option to return with them or take the ferry back which would mean that we could stay longer, they gave us information on where to have lunch ( expensive or other) and what to see. We had a fabulous time, we walked along the Boardwalk ,took great pics, saw some spectacular houses, views , beautiful shops including an all year round Christmas shop, had lunch at a great restaurant. They had numerous eateries, bakeries ( got a Sausalito cookie) , they have a few parks even saw sunbathers and lots of pretty doggies. Trip back to San Francisco via ferry was fun and inexpensive.

By Steven S |

Go across to Sausalito from S.F. and get warm!!
We enjoyed a couple of hours stroll around Sausalito on our S.F. visit. A nice lunch and ice cream by the harbour made for a lovely contrast to S.F.
Plus Sausalito has a totally different climate to S.F. so if it is grey and cold in S.F. the chances are it will be sunny and warm in Sausalito.....

By supaberri |

Sausalito is a beautiful village and well worth the cycle from San Francisco, but what we were not advised of by our rental company, or sufficiently made aware of in Sausalito, is the parking fines if you do not "park" your bicycle in the designated areas. These are not particularly well signposted - it is actually close to where the ferry leaves - however the fine is steep and despite our protestations that there was not actual sign saying that parking our bicycle was forbidden - us along with several other individuals were fined as apparently there is a general exclusion.
Tourists bring significant daily trade to the area and we otherwise loved our style - but the attitude towards cyclists in particular I feel is unfair and unwarranted.

By all means visit and enjoy Sausalito, however I just wanted to make other cyclists aware so that hopefully you also avoid this disappointing (and expensive) experience.

By richmet |

Sausalito is a lovely spot to while away a couple of hours. Some shopping, a lunch and a gentle stroll. It's a very genteel place and seems a million miles from San Fran's energy.

By juanene C |

Don't even think to drive your car in Sausalito or even worse to park there!! They're hunting tourist... really. I have a parking ticket while picking up my familiy!!!!!!!!!! Not even a minute!!! $113.00 ticket for being a tourist in this snooty town. AWFUL.

By Rajan Bhatia |

A walk to remember alongside the ocean. It is a must place to visit to enjoy some great food, amazing natural beauty and great sight seeing. One can click some great pics while walking side by side the ocean and can even find some smallest of the crabs in this place. On one side you can walk beside the ocean and on the other side, you find some great eating outlets to spend a great evening time. one can also witness the San Francisco skyline from here as well.

By MSukrisman |

I couldn't believe that I love this town so much. Almost every week I keep coming back to enjoy the food and the view.
Twice by car but the weather were cloudy and the perfect last one by boat from Ferry Terminal San Francisco.
If I have more time I should explore biking around the town, must be lovely.
The dining places and the ice cream cafes are the best to make your tummy happy.
if you love photography, don't forget to bring your long lens to capture San Francisco from the other side.

By arlenemurals |

Sausalito is beautiful, I visited there on a package bus tour from Muir Woods. We did not get enough time to really take in this lovely little town. Looked around saw great eateries, art galleries, specialty shops all situated on a beautiful sunny peninsula by the see.

By TravelingSoccerLoon |

Picturesque coastal town across from San Francisco in Marin County. You can drive here by crossing the Golden Gate Bridge or you can catch a ferry from along the Embarcadero in San Francisco. Beautiful views of San Francisco Bay and many upscale dining and shopping options.

By tapdancer68 |

The picture "Ships Store" needs to be updated, as the wonderful, independent BOOK PASSAGE has opened a new store on Sausalito's Boardwalk facing the bay: Books by the Bay, featuring the bestsellers, of course, but also works by local authors (did you know Amy Tan and other names you'd recognize live nearby?), books on San Francisco and environs, including sailing and cycling books, along with great author events several times a week. Visitors can also pick up picnic fare, snacks, and soon, I'm told, grab a cup of coffee. The store is within yards of where the tour busses stop, so don't miss it! A treat for tourists and locals, alike!

By Atiyadlc |

spent the afternoon here. amazing town. very relaxing. This place is the epitome of chill
the weather is just right. makes you feel at home . It gives you a vibe that your always welcome here
I would definitely come back here

A picturesque place to visit on a beautiful day- we biked over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and caught the ferry back, such an amazing day. A great little town to visit for sure 👍🏼

By hbhakh |

We stopped in Sausilito on a very nice day for lunch and a walk. There is ample parking (paid) near the downtown and boardwalk. We enjoyed the views of the water and the nice weather. There are plenty of restaurants and shops in the area.

By Glenn A |

We arrived early morning as the town was waking. It was the perfect time for a beautiful bayside stroll. Of course, we saw sea lions. The town seemed full of tourist shops, but since we were there before they opened, they did not annoy.

By Christina |

Must visit to get the beautiful SF skyline with Golden Gate Bridge and the surrounding bay with blue water studded withehule sails. What more can one wish for. There are boutique stores and eateries. Biking seem to be popular here as I see lots of tourists cycling up and down the hill and on GGB. Will be returning here again if I visit SF again. This is a good town to stop by on your way back from Muir Woods.

By ziaahmed21 |

Stopped at Sausalito on the way to Muir Woods on a day trip from SF. What a lovely little place to stop for lunch, take in the lovely views and people watch!

By David Hardie |

This is a must do for anyone that enjoys the bay. View is excellent you can see both bridges, Oakland and San Francisco on part of the walk.

By Ilene S |

Our Gray Line tour to Meir Woods offered this trip to Sausalito after the Woods and then a Ferry ride back across the bay. Loved the ferry ride but there is not much in Sausalito. Only a few shops and restaurants and poor restroom facilities.

By Beggarall |

A short walk amongst moored boats but apart from a chance to stretch your legs nothing much to commend it otherwise

By willys6 |

I had a recent to visit to this area since I live within 50 miles. Anyhow, great day out without the hassles of SF. The parking can be found, not plagued with homelessness and in general a great vibe with views. However, take note I visited in December and not sure how mid summer would be.
Nice shops to check out various price ranges and an abundance of food venues.

By shearpamela |

I love Sausalito, the views are beautiful and there are endless places to dine, sip and shop. It is a photographer's paradise as well.

By Travel-bug2910 |

Sausalito is a magical place that oozes charm warmth and beauty. A walk along this boardwalk lifts the spirits any day.

By Ashley R |

This was one of my favorite outings during our SFO Trip. You can take the ferry over from SFO or take a day trip thru a sightseeing company, either way plan on doing this during your visit. This town is so quaint and cute. Tons of little shops and restaurants to stop at and some of the most gorgeous views of the city. You can also walk around the marina which is very nice. Just a good way to relax and slow down on a nice sunny day

By Mike R |

Nice place, really secluded location from the hustle and bustle of SF! Went went family, enjoyed the day, the weather (was actually great, sunny, and not so windy as SF). We live in SF, so it's a great day trip, took public trans, had fun!

By Matt T |

A lovely place to visit, we cycled over and back from San Francisco. As soon as you arrive you notice a different climate, nice and warm compared to the cool fog of SF. Very cycle friendly. Be sure to look for free cycle parking further into town for this; don't pay the $3 Valet cycle parking as it isn't worth it or necessary.

Lots of shops to have a nose in. Lots of restaurants, some pricier than others!

Great to sit back in the sun, and relax looking at the harbour.

Would love to go back again some day!

By lpetti3000 |

This is not a place I’d make a special trip to, but if you’re in the area is a cool place to stop. Cute shops and a good view of SF.

By Donna Rossa |

Just a few miles from the city, Sausalito appears, just by sitting at the water’s edge, watching San Francisco appear in the mist, it is worth the trip.

By Philippe A |

After visiting the Golden Gate we recommen to go to Sausalito. Nice fisherman harbor, but a bit touristic

By Dizzy Bird |

Lovely views across the San Francisco Bay from the boardwalk. The boardwalk was busy but crowded. Friendly and energising atmosphere with lots of happy people!
However was windy and the wind had a slight cold edge even on a sunny afternoon. Make sure you have a jacket.
Also watch out for the bicycles. Lots of them!

By The World is My Oyster |

Walked around the area for a few hours and loved the scenery all around. The ocean breeze and the sailboats floating around really reminded me of the Mediterranean sea.

By JinxHE |

We took the ferry to Sausalito, which offers lovely views of the bay and bridges. Sausality itself is charming; there are number of boutique shops, kitschy restaurants, wine shops, and bakeries. It's very laid back, but feels like an old-money place. We stayed three hours or so, which was just enough this trip. I would love to stay overnight at some point. Well worth the time - it's truly a beautiful place.

By PenAnne |

We took the ferry to Sausalito which is really the way to go; even though you can drive. Once off the ferry the adorable downtown is right there. Shops from moderate to high end so there's something for everyone.

It's a nice walkable area with great views of S.F. and the town itself.

Lots of places to eat again from moderate to high end. We spent several hours there and enjoyed every minute.

By Bill F |

Had a great time here with my out of town guest, I recommend taking the ferry from SF it make it good sight seeing on the way, on my last trip we bought some jewelry at Lulu Designs, Very nice shop.

By D_W_10017 |

We preferred Sausalito to anything else in the Bay Area. Definitely take a trip here for a few hours on the main street and boardwalk and enjoy a lot of good choices for dining.

By Willie V |

Located just a few minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge, this beautiful little town is comparable to Positano. We biked the Golden Gate Bridge and followed many bikers who all ended up in this popular destination. As soon as we started going down the road, we immediately had a panoramic view of the Richardson bay, and the Angel Island nearby.. then, all these beautiful million dollar houses perched on the hillside. The town is very quaint.. with restaurants, cafes, shops, park, etc. It's simply stunning. Highly recommend people check this place out

By Travellerd9 |

We took a ferry direct across the bay from the San Francisco Ferry Building Pier.
Left in sunshine and sailed through fog to be greeted in Sausalito by sunshine again! Enjoyed views of the baying ate brunch in The Trident which was lovely. Then browsed the shops before strolling along the promenade.
Jumped on a bus which took us across the Golden Gate bridge to return.
A wonderful afternoon away from the city.

By Mansi_Vij |

This is a very beautiful small town by the bay. There are many eateries and other shops to look at. There are shops lined on one side and yacht lined on the other side. Its nice to walk and the enjoy the beauty of hills, gentle a breeze and beautiful houses at same time. Its very close to San Francisco

By Jessica S |

Cute littl town. Super nice. Great views of San Francisco, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. Can't miss this little town if crossing the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.

This is the place where a lot of the bike riders / walkers from the Golden Gate Bridge end up therefore it's extremely busy however it's lovely with plenty of shops, cafes and ice cream available
Definitely a place to visit

Beautiful area but major homeless problem here also. Homeless camped out just feet from large yachts at marina. Disgusting and uncomfortable feeling

Book Passage now inhabits this space . Book passage is a GREAT book store. The people know a lot. I sometimes order books from

By alanseeley3 |

Stayed here a couple of years ago in a house
high above the town with views overlooking the bay.
Great choice of restaurants with loads to do during
the day. Fabulous.

By Rodney C |

This is a good place to spend the afternoon and get away from the hustle of San Francisco. Many shops and food. Great views of the bay. Go and relax.

By Fulya A |

Cute town, nice houses and view. If you have more than three days in SF, visit this town. Otherwise it doesn’t worth the time spend there.

By XJ750 |

Perfect for walking along browsing eclectic shops while soaking in waterfront views. There is a shop for all interests. Busy on a sunny weekend, watch out for cyclists!

By jeng2mayo |

Sausalito Boardwalk is a small waterfront way with small shops and a great view of the San Francisco Bay away from most tourist crowds that are visiting San Francisco. It is a short drive from the vista point of the Golden Gate bridge. I usually take my visitors and relatives to this boardwalk plus the Tiburon boardwalk after I have exhausted all point of interest in San Francisco. If your goal is to do walking and biking trips, this area is the best way to catch a ferry to do all activities in Angel Island which is a great biking and hiking day trip. I suggest for you to come here early if sports activities are in your agenda. Also, be sure to have the ferry schedule in hand so that you can plan your day ahead.

By permia |

After a grand trip across the bay from the Ferry Building we arrived on a pleasant balmy evening just as the sunlight began to fade.

We enjoyed a relaxing stroll along the waterfront, past the marina all the way to the Spinmaker eatery where we had fine dinner fare.

On route we stopped by the dedication plaque to William Richardson, Sausalito's founder.

By Roberta d |

Sausalito seems to be in Portofino!
We arrived here by Uber, only 25 $ from San Francisco financial District.
You can walk down the bay to take a picture or you can enjoy a breakfast time, it’s very nice place to spend a day to relax so take your time!

Spent an afternoon here not knowing what to expect, found a lovely little seaside place that was just delightful. Great walk along the shops, fantastic burgers and found some great places for photos along the boardwalk. If you have an afternoon free, this is worth it.
