Hop on - Hop off tour is the way to go

By Joanne S |

There's so much to see and do in the historic district. We returned several times to see the different squares and homes in the area. Not to mention the variety of restaurants and shops.

Sad Historical City

By Ted B |

Savannah downtown is dirty, trash everywhere, landscaping is unkept, historical markers are filthy and barely readable. Riverfront is lined with tee shirt shops and bars.
This is not a family friendly city.
We stayed 1 night and went to Charleston. Lovely City and suitable for families.

So glad we went

By Shelia M |

We stayed in a duplex. Got a two day pass on the trolley. Visited the prohibition museum which was interesting. Ate at some great places. Our rental was clean, comfortable and affordable. Had a really good time.

Real tourist trap

By Chyann311 |

Everything was fine in savannah until dinner at Elizabeth house on 37th st. Restaurant is a real overpriced tourist trap . Food was fair at most compared to say the pink house restaurant we also dined at. Service was spotty at Elizabeth hs on 37th. Rooms were crowded and very boisterous considering reviewers say it’s supposed to be a romantic experience.

Truly magical place!

By Lisa P |

The Historic District does not disappoint! We homes are amazing! Each one is so unique and has so much history to tell! It is worth taking a walking tour! Truly magical place!

Beautiful walkable

By travelgal1994 |

Walked and did a hop off and on bus. Beautiful squares in the historic area. Sad to see the homeless there this visit.
But they did not approach us.
Walkable area and enjoyed the beautiful houses and gardens.
Loved the monuments and the landmarks.

Absolutely Beautiful!

By elchaco |

We were going to take a road trip, and during the planning stages of said trip, I was deciding between Savannah and Charleston on a place to spend the night and visit. I am so glad I chose Savannah and didn't miss this gem! Walking around the Historic District is like taking a step back in time! So many beautiful homes, public squares every couple of blocks, streets lined with huge trees, shops, restaurants, and on and on!!! Savannah was my favorite city on our road trip, and the Historic District is the main reason why!

Savannah and all of its charm.

By craig |

This city is full of charm, history, friendly people and great restaurants. We highly recommend the trolley tour and the dueling graveyard.

Beautiful Destination

By MrsKKC |

We had an amazing girls’ weekend! Walking through town, cemeteries, and parks are breathtaking. We will return.
Sights, food and attractions were all enjoyable!

Lovely!

By JrnyJunkie |

Just so well preserved and maintained. So romantic with the Spanish moss and lovely homes. Fun to just walk around and enjoy looking at all of the historic mansions and visit the many squares.

Firework show

By Jane L |

Went down to see the fireworks with my children on memorial Day. Lovely fireworks show at the end the captain of the boat actually said on his loudspeaker fxck Joe Biden. So disappointed so so disappointed I don't care what your political thought is that was memorial Day how dare you disrespect. Is this what Savannah is about?

Never knew Savannah was so fun

By bbusler |

We flew into Savannah for a week in Hilton Head. Fortunately, we decided to stop by River Street and have lunch. I never knew that Savannah was such a fun place to visit. We went back for a food/historical tour. It was great. Someday we will come back to visit Savannah again!

Enjoy the beautiful sights in Historic Savannah

By Alec K |

Plenty of interesting history to be found in this portside city in Northern Georgia. Visit River Street for a taste of the old warehouse area. Walk down the cobblestone street and enjoy the many shops and restaurants along the way. Don't miss the amazing collection of geodes and fossils in the Marriott lobby (open to the public). Stop by the 22 squares in the city each with its own unique feel. Relax by the beautiful fountain in Forsyth Park and walk around the perimeter to enjoy the amazing 1800's architecture. Plenty of great restaurants to be found throughout the district. Don't miss dessert at Leopold's Ice Cream. Lots of museums and historic cemeteries to visit as well. Parking can be found at the many parking decks throughout the area or on the street at pay-to-park stations. Note: Handicap parking is available in the garages as well as on the street. For handicap street parking, you have to pay at the parking meters so bring LOTS of quarters. You can easily fill 3-4 days exploring the area, so bring your walking shoes and have a wonderful time in historic Savannah!

Beautiful and Historic; Nice City for Walks

By Outdoor Traveler |

We were there in March. The temperatures were comfortable and the azaleas and other flowers were beautiful. We enjoyed seeing the historic squares, homes, parks, and river walk area. It's a really nice city for walking and enjoying pleasant scenery, southern charm, flowers, history, live oak, and spanish moss.

Beautiful walk

By aspoe093 |

What an absolute beauty. I love history and walking all over Savannah and looking at the history was amazing. This is recommended to take in the history.

Endless Beauty in Downtown Savannah

By Tony F |

Any trip to Savannah should include at least a half day just walking around in the Historic District. The streets, and particularly the squares, are pretty, and the historic sights are too numerous to mention.

Great for two solid days of activity

By BobN06 |

There are a number of historic homes to tour and a few worthwhile museums. We covered everything in two days between 10AM and 5PM each day - with a little bit of good timing. Most tours are docent guided, not audio.

Decent stop if you like history.

By John C |

Decided to stop here and check out the area while driving down from Massachusetts to Florida. What I can say to you if you truly like history then this is a nice little stop. Considering that I live close to Boston, this was just another old city to check out for me. A lot of the buildings were very old and historical and they had a nice center park. Would I actually come here for vacation? No. It was something to do and stretch my legs while getting close to my destination.

House tours are worth it

By Cmrhoney |

We bought a trolly package that included 2 house tours - The Davenport House and Andrew Low House. Both were beautiful and worth it.

Nice place

By LostInTime |

It’s a very beautiful old area. It’s pretty flat so walking is easy. Lots of old buildings. And peaceful squares. Plenty of shops and places to eat. It’s really nice.

Great time in Savannah

By mommal958 |

Fabulous place to visit. Take the trolley tour. Visit River Street. Little Duck Diner is a nice place for lunch. Tybee Island is about 15 minutes from town. Climb the 178 stairs

Amazing

By Mikicr |

BEAUTIFUL! We stayed on Jones Street and walked the historic district quite a bit. It is a beautiful area. We always felt safe. Loved the architecture.

22 Squares

By B G |

One square is nicer than the next, but all of them could use some security, especially at night. If tourists do not feel safe, they will go elsewhere.

Need new leadership.

By Tom & Vincent |

February 2025 Under construction and vendors are leaving due to high rents. Bad management mayor! Hurry before it’s too late. $70 for lunch and $100 for dinner. Hotels are priced out of range. Prepare to drop $1000 for a weekend.

So much fascinating history!

By 1Palmtreelover |

We just spent a wonderful three days in Savannah Georgia doing all the touristy things. Savannah is a beautiful city with so much fascinating history. Do yourself a favor and google all the gorgeous historical homes before visiting them. Each home is more interesting then the other!
Male sure you wear comfortable shoes and have some water with you.
We did the Savannah Hop on Hop Off Tour and the Dead of Night walking tour, (see reviews).
The people of Savannah are friendly and welcoming.
Would highly recommend.

Clean Up the City

By Michèle M |

I was excited to come visit Savannah after a long ride from Atlanta on my way home to Central Florida. First, I checked out the Riverfront Street where there is some shopping. It was very eclectic. I left there and went down Bull St where I was parked to check out the square which in itself was beautiful. I left the park after seeing a group of homeless people having a meeting of some sort. I headed to Broughton Ave to check that out. It was Christmas time so I was really looking forward to the decorations. I was confronted by some homeless young kids. They were asking me for cigs, beer, cash. I told them no and kept going. There were so many homeless young people it made me feel very uneasy. I immediately got to my car looking over my shoulder the whole time. Savannah needs to clean up the city. As a single female I did not feel safe.

nice homes

By paulgX5110FQ |

seeing the old homes and the city were great everyone was very friendly need more time to see on vacation

Trolly Tour

By Annette P |

Loved the history and stories shared on trolly tour. Beautiful homes and spanish moss trees! Tour driver a local so very knowledgeable about Savannah!

Always go back

By Maria S |

One of the most beautiful spots to spend well-deserved time off. It remains a step back in time with amazing historical structures that have withstood the test of time, weather, war and fire.

Beautiful historical area

By Susan C |

Just recently visited Savannah while staying up in Hilton Head, SC. My husband I thoroughly enjoy American historical sites and this one of the many places on the East Coast where you can learn and enjoy. The historical homes surround the beautiful town squares with moss draped live oak. Yes, there are homeless but they didn't detract from the experience we had there. Be sure to dine at Vic's on the upper level along the ri er front. You can enter the restaurant where the old Cotton Exchange is. The restaurant has a map of Gen. Sherman's march to Savannah discovered accidentally in 1901. Stop at Leopold's for icecream later on.

Birthday celebration

By KRPINGRMI |

This is our second time back to Savannah in 10 years. Love this place, the atmosphere, the bars, the restaurants and people watching. Very historical with hundreds of years of American History. It’s also the 3rd busiest port in the US. Sitting on the Savannah River watching the huge ships coming and going is quite impressive. The old buildings and cobblestone streets dating back to the 1700’s is fascinating to see. Enjoyable to sit in the many squares that are everywhere throughout the historic town. There are many tours to take to show you the Historic City. We came here with 3 other couples to celebrate a birthday. Great place to enjoy whatever you have to celebrate.

Lovely Historic Homes, Squares and Beautiful Live Oak Trees

By Carol Ann J |

The Savannah Historic District has many beautifully restored homes, twenty-two lovely squares and the most beautiful live oak trees throughout the area. One may enjoy strolling through the area admiring the magnificent homes, architecture, iron work, and doorways. Each square is unique and beautiful as well.

Savannah’s Downtown Area Crime Ridden

By Gerald L |

Open drug use in all the parks, homeless people pooping and peeing in public. Had to step over blood covered underwear and hypodermic needles. No law enforcement presence. This area is no longer safe for families to travel to. Very sad to see and would not recommend as a travel destination!

Love Savannah

By Bea |

Love Savannah and especially its historic district with impressive buildings and beautiful streets especially Jones street, one of the most beautiful streets in the USA.

Love Savannah

By Laura I |

We took the trolley to give ourselves an idea of what to see. We enjoyed the history of the area the most. All of it is wonderful and interesting.

My favorite city thus far in the States

By Caromama |

There is so much to do both in the historic district and in rover street that I need at least a whole week or two. It's such a beautiful. Haunting city. Love it so much.

Highly recommend the Grayline Savannah Historical Tour.

By Beth H |

Our driver/tour guide, Lieutenant Dan, is a native of Savannah. He knew the history and historical sites very well, was able to answer our questions, and spoke very clearly. He rates 5 stars.

The extra perk with Grayline is that they picked us up at our hotel because it was in the historic district. After the tour, the Grayline shuttle took us to one of the stops along the way for us to tour at own pace. When we finished, we simply called from one of the designated stops and they picked us up to go to the next destination or take us back to our hotel. Amazingly, the price of the ticket was for two days.

Beautiful Historic Area

By Dickenson Family |

Absolutely loved Savannah, its incredible the old historic district with the cobblestone and moss and old trees. Beautiful architecture everywhere, lots of shops, hotels and restaurants can be found in the historic district. Parking can be hard to find if it is busy.

If possible- the best on foot

By podrozniczka60 |

In the past we visited this amazing city quarter via one of the trolley services. We enjoyed the narration and information. This time exploring on foot seemed the best of choices. It allowed for immersing into the lovely atmosphere and historic charm of this unique area. You need a simple map from the visitor center with the proposed route delineated. Most places have very good info right there at the location.
It is a lovely city walk.

Easy walking through history!

By dkg |

Beautiful Savannah and its gardens and different period and style of architecture! We started with a Gray Line tour then returned on foot. So much to see but it's very pleasant walking square to square and enter homes of interest for tours along the way.

The houses are just gorgeous.

By Tiffany k |

Such a beautiful city to walk around in. There is so much history and so many beautiful park squares,

Beautiful and full of Charm

By Lv2fish69 |

This is one of my favorite places to visit. So much history, however, very hot and busy in July. We stated in an Airbnb on Hall St. 180 year old place.

The Historic District is why you go to Savannah!

By floridaherbie |

We were already the second time in Savannah this time with our youngster. The Squares are just amazing - one more beautiful than the last one! And don't miss River Street and the river view! It is a place were time came to a stand still and the beauty of Old Europe was transferred and garnished with Georgia's old Live Oaks. A must see!

So much history and greenery

By James c |

Came here for 2 days in April 2022. This area is all walkable which I suggest staying in the historic district so you can leave your car parked, walk down Drayton st , will take you straight to river st, all the historical houses. Churchs, squares are all on this street or a street over each side. 2 days is enough in this city, a gorgeous city with so much history

Savor the Scenery

By Renee S |

Take the time to walk the streets and savor the homes, parks, and people. Make sure to walk down Jones Street. This is why you come to visit Savannah.

One Of America's Greatest Historic Districts

By Mark G |

Founded in 1733, Savannah has one of the largest National Landmark Historic Districts in the country. The Oglethorpe plan is significant for its distinctive grid plan and its 18th and 19th century architecture along with its 22 and soon to be back to its original 24 squares. The historic district encompasses the area from E. Broad St. to Gwinnett St. to MLK Blvd. and down to the Savannah River. There is so much to see from the Riverwalk, Forsyth Park, City Hall and Market, historic Inns, hotels and houses just to name a few that we could have spent a week in Savannah. Another plus is there is an open container law in the historic district which allows you to take your drinks with you while you are exploring this beautiful city.

Red, the awesome Trolly driver

By Sallee007 |

We did the hop on off trolley. Taking it from the riverfront , we decided to stay on throughout all 15 stops to learn about Savannah. We had a great time and learned so much about the history of this beautiful town. Red was our conductor, she was funny, charming and made the trolley tour so
Much fun. We are going back to Jones St near Monterey Square for some pics and dining.

Ok to see but probably wont go back.

By mkettrey |

It was ok. Buildings were beautiful. Traffic was ok except when you are a pedestrian. You have to be very careful not to get ran over. It apparently is super busy this time of year because everything was a long wait. Not many of the homes yoy are able to go in and see. Its hard to get the full experience just looking at an outside of a building. Every street you were being asked for money or food. The homeless population is overwhelming there. Feel no need to travel back there.

Savannah is just wonderful!

By Vicky W |

Historic Savannah is one of the cities that we always return to. The architecture is amazing. The restaurants very good. Such a walkable area! There are walking, biking, and trolley tours available. Have a great time. The heavy areas are riverside, but take a lot of time just to stroll and enjoy the homes, churches and restaurants.

Not impressed

By Alice W |

Not impressed, city very dirty, historic district was not kept up, homeless every where, and Gang graffiti all over. We went to Charleston SC also. Much better. So beautiful and clean with beautiful yards every thing mainintaned better.

Wonderful History

By Lisa B |

Stay in the historic district if you visit Savannah. It is rich in history and a lovely area to walk around and explore.

Take a historical tour

By MarkCE61 |

Highly recommend taking 1 of the two (2) historical trolley tours in order to take in all the sites.

Beautiful City

By Windygnf |

We stayed down by River Street, but were able to walk all around the historic district, including to many of the squares. Beautiful architecture, gardens, fountains.

Great choice for a weekend getaway

By Adventure781328 |

Savannah is definitely a walking town. I prefer the historic district. I’d park on Bull Street near Forsyth Park & walk down Bull St to Bay St area (& the river) then back up Abercorn St. to get a good feel of the architecture, shops, restaurants, etc..

What was once a beautiful city is now th armpit of Georgia

By Lu Ann S |

not at all what was expected. This beautiful quaint city has been overrun by commercialism, crime, and suped-up cars causing chaos on River Street. We stayed at River Street Inn...beautiful old hotel, but in the middle of a mini-bourbon street of New Orleans. we did the trolley tour, which was informative but quite a wait ....only to find we could not see Forsyth Park due to setting up for a military band concert that night!!! REALLY!! you go to se Savannah FOR Forsyth Park and the surrounding area. Big waste of money.

We were seranaded Saturday night (starting at 7pm to jack-up clown cars blasting Rap Music with filthy language as families and children walked along River Street. We had windows shut in our room and it still sounded like there was a speaker blasting it IN our room. This went on for well over 2 hours. Never will go back.

Fabulous Savannah!

By patti r |

I loved everything in Savannah. From the homes, the squares, the tours, the people, the food, and our accommodations. It was an extremely wonderful trip. Prepare for the heat. It is brutal. Take the bus tours and the crime and wine tour. So fun and you learn a lot.

Informative and fun and a fabulous way to walk off those pecan pralines

By Cindy H |

so informative and Kevin made sure to make it interactive by encouraging us to ask questions. Every question was answered and responded with "great question", what a great way to make each person feel important and that they were contributing to the experience.

Well Worth the Time

By 2013CTB |

The Historic part of Savannah is well worth your time. If you are visiting make sure you get the most out of your stay by staying in one of the hotels in the historic properties. Walking through the area you get a sense of what old-world cities are like. It's nice to see businesses next to residential properties next to parks. Especially on Weekend evenings, the area is busy with foot traffic. So one minor complaint and this might not apply to you. The area could use some grass. Family pets need grass. Police presence is plentiful, but not overbearing. I didn't get a chance to take one of the trolley tours, but I definitely think it would be helpful for a first-time visitor.

November in Savannah

By Russell S |

A lovely and facinating city. Recomend taking in one of the city sightseeing tours to get around the place (I went with the Old Savannah Tour company, historic hop on-hop off & grave encounters tours). Was challenged by the amount of roadworks being done at the time, but then it is the off-season.

Beautiful architecture and restorations

By Donna |

I enjoyed the beautiful architecture and the green squares. It’s very hot in Savannah in July and the old trees covered in Spanish moss were a welcome respite from the sun.

I Love History

By Curt K |

During a tour of Savannah we visited the Historic section of the city. It was a pleasure to see the different types of architecture that was used to build those houses and buildings. There is a lot of history here.

Nice place but overpriced

By Linda M |

I enjoyed the area even if it was expensive and not really worth the money spent. The locals are kind and helpful. This is not the safest place. Street people are on every street and the streets are not well lit. We chose to be back at the hotel before dark. The squares and parks are pretty and the hop on hop off tour was enjoyable. The city is overall dirty.

Last Visit to Savannah

By Gwenieth K |

What is happening to Savannah??? I just spent a night there and glad I didn't have to spend more time there. I used to love the place but definitely did not feel safe. Places were dirty and not well kept, homeless everywhere and there has been a definite downturn to the charm. So sad.

Take your time and appreciate the preservation.

By Harry McNear |

Unlike a typical historic district of a few blocks the Savannah district covers a large area. Forsyth park and all the small parks laid out in checkerboard fashion deserve slow walking and appreciation of landscaping and monuments.

Downtown Savannah

By Jmyersinc M |

Stay at the Hilton Garden Inn, where Kaneshia and Tiera is part of the staff. Great customer service and the hotel is walking distance to shopping, eating, ice cream, and more. Park and enjoy!

Walkable district with beautiful architecture

By mariedesjardins |

Savannah’s charm us in its beautiful varied architecture, oak-lined squares, and parks. I enjoyed the structures around Forsyth park and the Victoria district very much. The yellow gingerbread house was on bull street near the Savannah library. I only found one bus driver and a lady at the visitor centre who knew its location. Try to save your feet by taking the cat shuttle. I was visiting in august so it also provided relief from the summer heat.

Absolutely Beautiful

By Gwen B |

We stayed a week in the heart of the historic district. If you love history, stunning architecture and beautiful walks through little gems of parks this is the place for you. Recommend a minimum of 3 days to really see. Also we did a trolley tour first day and that is great to orient yourself and decide where you want to return to. We did the full loop in the morning about 1.5 hrs and got off down by river street to tour the afternoon then hopped back on to go back to our AirBB. That made it easy to then organize our other days.

Unique and interesting

By table45 |

I can't imagine there are too many places like this in America. The historic district is beautiful. The squares are a must see. The architecture is amazing. This is truly a gem in the South. I would recommend at least two full days to see the sights. Not including Tybee Island, Fort(s), eating/drinking. Utilize the hop-on-hop-off trolleys.

Lovely historic district

By Life2Travel |

The historical district was one of the nicest I have seen. It is clear they are taking tremendous effort to restore and preserve this area. There is so much to see and all of it is within walking distance. We loved the historic homes, the lovely squares and the live oaks. Take a trolley tour when you first arrive to get an overview and a lay of the land.

Worth the stroll in the Historic District

By Richard Graham |

A great way to experience the Southern lifestyle. The old historic district is full of shopping and eating places, all confined in a walk-able area from most of the riverfront hotel properties. There is a good variety of restaurants from moderate to expensive menu options. The staff and people in the area were super friendly and added to the experience of Old Savannah. Worth the stroll when in Savannah.

Best tour ever

By Mary H |

Honey thw tour guide was great. She was very engaging. In the 90 minutes I learned so much about the City. I will be recommending it to my clients ( Travel Agent)

Overrated!

By Noelia D |

People are mean and service at restaurants are the worst !overrated! San Agustín is much much better than this!! Won't came here ever again!

Amazing place and food

By Lily125 |

Dining in this place was like stepping into a page of a history book! The place is beautiful inside and out and the food is top notch. You have to book ahead of time!

Nice Afternoon Stroll

By annapN7702ZW |

Great way to spend an afternoon if you have a few hours to kill. Cute stores - solid mix of chains and local business owners

great place!

By Lisa D |

its very walkable and beautiful. everyone is very friendly. laid out in a grid so easy to find your way around.

I'll be back.

By Tina E |

There is so much to do and see in the Historic District. I'm coming back. The free bus service made it easy to get around and the amount of great restaurants was amazing. We did not have a bad meal in 5 days.

Forsyth park is the gem

By Tracey Gaylen Anderson |

Take a trolley tour thru the area to get a lay of the land. There are many shops restaurants and land marks to see.

Savannah is the gem of the south

By Alan P |

Most beautiful city to visit in USA. Great architecture, history and people. Never a boring moment.if you are a history buff this is a great place to explore. Savannah has charm and grace that is part of the nature of the people who live there.

A bit disappointing, sorry.

By A Midlife Adventure |

Savannah was a must see on our current road trip up the Eastern Seaboard BUT I was a little disappointed.
Whilst we took a walk around the historic district and it was a bit of a rainy Saturday I didn’t see as many beautiful houses as I expected. The city just felt like it needed a bit of a clean up. For me it was surpassed by Charleston.
I’m glad I went but I wouldn’t return.

Beautiful

By Olga H |

The beauty of the historic area of Savannah is impressive.
The architecture and historic relevance are both extraordinary.
We look forward to our next visit.

Captain Phil's Trolley is Tops!

By Brett Cartwright |

Capt. Phil guided us brilliantly on the Savannah Old Town Trolly Tour. Knowlegeable, entertaining, humourous, and highly informative - a first class treat - thank you!!

Don't miss this gem

By Barb H |

Walk around, and enjoy the sights and great stores, the beautiful old buildings and if you're lucky you'll see huge container ships go by very close! There are lots of great stores and restaurants, and green spaces as well...you could spend as much or as little time here as you'd like.

Fun and easy to get around!

By Deanna s |

A beautifully restored city.
Easy to navigate for a first timer.
The DOT has free buses if you cannot walk to far.
If I had one complaint it would be that there where no public bathrooms anywhere in the city!!! With a city that has a open container law. Many stores had a no public restroom sign.

Sweet, Sweet Savannah

By Susan E |

I just moved here and Savannah is absolutely gorgeous! Architecture! Fantastic! People are so sweet. It's so much fun! Walking around downtown is a visual treat!
Come here! You are going to love it as much as I do!

amazing, must see place in the USA, so beautiful

By Josephine H |

I love this place, it's so interesting and beautiful and historic and charming. Very walkable and if you download a free walking tour guide you will get more out of it.

This is why you come

By Familytraveller31 |

If you're visting Savannah, this is why you came. Try to stay in the historic district and eat in the many fine restaurants.

Favorite Historical District

By lexicsmith3 |

This place is absolutely beautiful. Probably my favorite historical district that I’ve ever been to. Lots of sidewalks for strollers and there a some restaurants nearby. 10/10 recommend!

Must visit to learn the history of the city

By Sridharan M |

The bus tours that service the historic district allow one to cover the whole place, with insightful commentary by the driver.

Best stop of our USA roadtrip so far!

By Michelle B |

Old town Savannah was so cute! From the pictures I seen online and the things I read I still never expected something so nice to walk around. Cobblestone streets old buildings cute shops and the trees and plants are gorgeous! Even though we were there on a rainy day it was so nice!

If you’re into history, this is your spot!

By garybe |

Big tip… Old Town Trolley tours from market square, guided tour with multiple stops, on/off at will. The historic district is beautiful, well worth the whole trip. Lots of history and wonderful architecture. Moss covered trees, park areas, monuments, shops, and restaurants. But, be prepared, parking is terrible. Pay paying only, virtually, and not cheap.

Old World Charm

By DontStopExploring |

Loved walking around the historic district of Savannah. Everyone we encountered were so friendly. The streets are clean, free of debris and it feels like walking in another era.

Excellent place to Visit!

By Roger W |

Here’s a polished review for Savannah’s Historic District:

Savannah’s Historic District is an absolute gem, offering a perfect blend of history, architecture, and a touch of mystery with its ghost stories. Walking through the district, you’ll find stunning parks, charming squares, and iconic locations, including spots featured in Forrest Gump.

River Street is a highlight, bustling with energy and offering a unique experience as you watch massive barges glide by. For a closer look at the river, you can hop aboard the Georgia River Queen, a fantastic boat ride that takes you up and down the Savannah River.

The district’s historic charm, beautiful architecture, and lively atmosphere make it a must-visit destination. Highly recommend it to anyone exploring Savannah!

Wonderfully Restored!

By Charity |

The historic district is wonderful and very walkable. There are many small businesses and shops in all 22 squares. It also seems to be populated at all hours, even when leaving a 12am ghost tour! Definitely would check this out while in Savannah!

A very beautiful place

By Ymcolibri |

It is a very nice city, with a lot of history.
Its parks, houses, fountains, markets transport you to a different time and you feel surrounded by the events that accompanied them.
It is a highly recommended place.

Beautiful area

By Jenny culinary girl |

Truly enjoyed Savannah historic area. It is beautiful to walk the parks and enjoy the friendly people.

Enjoyed the beautiful homes and history

By maggymolly |

Did the hop on off trolly and got to learn a lot about the city.. Drivers had a lot of good info. I imagine it would be really hot once the weather warms up!

Homelessness haunts visit

By finney9685 |

Savannah is beautiful, especially the historic district, but of the many squares we walked through, almost all of them were occupied by groups of homeless people. We couldn’t have a picnic lunch, or sit and rest and enjoy the beautiful live oaks draped in Spanish moss. In the evening the pedal powered mobile bars and open limos for drinking while sightseeing gave Savannah a Nashville vibe. A great destination for bachelorette parties, but for me and my family, the drinking and ghost tour culture along with the overwhelming homeless presence means we won’t return. Our AirBNB was also disappointing as it was on the second floor above a restaurant, meaning it was very loud at night and smelled like grease exhaust. The culture was great for hipsters , kind of like a southern Seattle, but also very alcohol oriented. Not what I was hoping to experience. The southern vibe is eroding.

nice area to walk around

By ozpix |

Nice to just wander around the local streets and discover cute houses, and lots of history. Lots of pretty Christmas decorations also.

Charming, Historic City

By Anne O |

Whether you do it by trolley, horse drawn carriage or on foot, a tour of historic Savannah is a must. Its beautiful parks, trees and architecture highlight the beauty of this wonderful city. Statues, memorials and cemeteries pay homage to its storied past. It's very unique and charming.

Beautiful Area

By Tina R |

We really enjoyed the Historic District, the architecture was amazing and all of the history made me want to walk and see every nook and cranny.

Never again!

By Compass42901810424 |

I was almost only in the city center or old town, just like 10 years before. Just ugly and downright depressing the streets and houses. No greenery, old and pottery homes with narrow streets. I felt very uncomfortable there, even outside the whole cityscape does not fit together visually. Built without aesthetics and without sense and reason.
Never go there again!

Great experience

By kmprej54 |

Great experience to see a beautiful city. Malcolm was great too!!! I would recommend it for anyone to hear history, see beautiful architecture and hear about the famous people!!

incredible place and sights

By Mofongo1980 |

The history of this city is only rivaled by its beauty. To stroll through its charming streets, soak up the warmth of its sun, its people and cuisine is to truly unwind and enjoy the spirit of the South.

Jones St.

By TrayBN |

Went up and down Jones St. between MLK Blvd. and Broad St. This street is spectacular (and not full of tourists). The atmosphere and architecture epitomize upper class South.

Disappointed

By Sarah W |

Wasn't very impressed, was kind of sad that it's not been better taken care of. The area has become more of a tourist trap with lots of little shops.

Wasn't as great as we had expected

By Suzy S |

We loved Wormsloe for the photo op but not much else going on there. We stayed in the Historic District at the TYRP by Wyndham. Definitely wasn't what we were expecting. No room service, not even trash pickup unless we left it outside our room. No vending machines, food available. Closest place was about 3-4 blocks away. We thoroughly enjoyed the Thomas-Owens House and the St. John Basilica church. Enjoyed our time at Bonaventure Cemetery. Was a little disappointed in the houses downtown because they didn't look nearly as good in person as in pictures. We barely hit the downtown area because parking was such a horrible situation. Heard praise about the homemade pralines.. Not worth the money. We ended up throwing them away. Best part of our trip was going out to Hilton Head, SC. We spent two days going out there for the beach and food in that area. Granddaughter loved the pirate ship but it was a poor substitute for the ones in Florida. We barely got out of the boat slip. We were expecting to be taken at least for a small boat ride of sorts. Highlight of that adventure were the water cannons where the kids sprayed the hapless pirate with water for about ten minutes. We plan on returning to the East coast again in the future but would probably head towards Charleston or further north. This is definitely not an area to take a young child. It's definitely geared towards people who love the history or are golf enthusiasts.

Amazing seque tour

By Felecia G |

Carolyn from the Seque tours was an excellent guide. She was knowledgeable and fun and made our first seque ride amazing! And she did a great job of teaching us (4 people over 50) how to ride and be safe.

Beautiful city

By Randy F |

This is our 1st time to Savanah. What a great city. We walked everywhere, averaged 13000 steps a day. The history and architecture was so impressive. We took a ton of pictures.

Lots of beautiful sights.

By Angela H |

Lots of things to see. Highly recommend. We especially like the City Market and walking along Riverfront. Sidewalks were a bit bumpy for a mobility scooter but lots of photo ops.

3 days in Savannah

By Denise C |

Direct flight Breeze -Providence to Savannah. Both airports easy in/out-no shuttle between gates-super convenient. Wednesday -Saturday. Homewood Suites on river. Decent breakfast. Paid $45 valet first night then parked elsewhere overnight-free. Make sure you notify hotel prior. They charged but took off bill. Good staff. Ate at B Matthews, The Wyld, Vic’s on the River, Cha Bella, Castaways, in order of best food. Beautiful historic homes, neat riverwalk free public transportation on the ferry. Would be fun for couples!

Nicely preserved

By CenPeCo C |

The Savannah historic district is rich with stories, architectural beauty, many things to do, all within walking distance.
Recommend comfortable shoes with sturdy sole. The sidewalks and roads have many undulations.
Parking on the street can be challenging, but many decks are accessible and there is a free shuttle (at least while we were there).

Around town

By Bonitta211 |

The architecture of Savannah is beautiful and has unique history. We took two different tours through this district with each offering different information. I would recommend you first take either a carriage ride tour or the trolley tour to be able to appreciate the neighborhoods, its history and the people who lived there

The beauty of savanna

By helpinghands001 |

Savanna is an absolutely beautiful city to walk around and get lost in. The history, the preservation of houses, squares, and parks is amazing. People are friendly, it’s safe and clean. So much to see and do!

River St Inn Savannah GA

By DebnJosh |

Stayed at River St Inn downtown it was lovely! The staff especially Sarah and Freda. After a long semi stressful drive these girls brightened me right back up gave us great suggestions of where to go! The complimentary bottle of champagne was exactly what I needed! We went to Vic's on the waterfront for dinner It was delicious!

History Ruined by Cannabis

By RC W |

Beautiful historic city ruined by the overwhelming smell of cannabis EVERYWHERE. You literally can not escape it any time of day anywhere. The squares that this district is known for are full of the “un-housed” and no they are not benign. The city could do itself a favor and put locked covers on the electrical outlets being used by same individuals taking up residence in the squares. “Famous” River Street smelled of garbage —not appealing for the many restaurants this street is known for. Huge disappointment.

Cheers!!!

By Netti |

Very beautiful place without the usual chain stores. Everything is very relaxed and chilled. VERY friendly people - everywhere. Excellent food! Reasonable pricing. Amazing Rooftop bars!!!

Girls Trip

By Paula B |

A must take, the hop on hop off bus tour. So much history. Parking is terrible, you pay Meters by the hour and hard to find the space. Ride the bus. Stops at hot spots, catch the next bus at your convenience.

Great trip to Savannah

By Michael H |

We had a wonderful trip to Savannah last May. Stayed for 6 days at the Marriott Savannah Riverfront, the hotel was very nice, staff was great and the hotel was located right on the river with most things in walking distance. Savannah was very nice, as we walked the historic district and along Jones Street, saw ALL the squares and Forsyth Park, went to the cemetery, went to city market and the Prohibition Museum. Went up and down River Street most days, seeing the stores, shops and bars and restaurants. Had lunch on the riverboat, the Georgia Queen, took a Ghost and Gravestone Tour, and hit just about every rooftop bar. Had the best peach cobbler at the Peach Cobbler Factory and had some great ice cream at Leopold's Ice Cream Shop. One the best parts of the trip was the breakfast and dinners. Ate at Two Cracked Eggs and had the biscuits and gravy, which were delicious. Had dinner at The Pirate's House, ordered the fried green tomatoes and the Honey Pecan fried chicken, both were amazing. We also ate dinner at Alligator Soul one night, wish we went another night because it was fantastic. I ordered the alligator mac and cheese as an appetizer, it was awesome. For dinner, I tried the antelope, absolutely delicious. Alligator Soul is a must if you visit Savannah!
We will definitely be back to Savannah in the future, it's a wonderful city with so much to see and do, and full of history.

Short stay in Savannah

By Kimberly T |

Savannah is beautiful and full of history everywhere you turn. So much to do! I would definitely plan out my days if going for a short while. We were there for 4 full days and did not get to see half of what I wanted!
A Must place to experience is the Tavern at the Pink Brick house. Just be ready for a little bit of a wait.
I love how there are city parks everywhere you turn.
Don't forget to take a good pair of walking shoes, and be ready to climb or descend stairs. They are everywhere
I would also suggest taking advantage of the Hop On and Off tour bus. Definitely worth it!
Have fun!

Savannah Historic District A Must For Tourist

By B D |

Very touristy but a beautiful part of Savannah with lots of history. Can't be missed when in Savannah.

Feels like a must when in Savannah

By HeleneA636 |

Well worth a visit to Savannah's historic district. Many beautiful houses, many small parks everywhere and a lot of history to experience.

Well Preserved and Beautiful

By JMHImages |

Savannah is a must see destination on the I-95 corridor. Plan on spending at least two full days exploring the Historic District. I strongly suggest you do a walking tour to get an understanding of the history of the City and its layout. There are beautiful squares, lovely homes, and great resturants.

Good not great

By Mandy |

The people of savannah are amazing - kind and hospitable. The town of savannah looks old and tired - old staples like the Pink House were very underwhelming and not worth the price. BUT there were enough great restaurants and activities for a 3 day weekend. Be sure to rent a bike from the great Savannah on Wheels. Take in the spectacle around the market on a weekend night. And walk every garden and imagine it in its heyday. I bet it was glorious!

Beautiful part of the city!

By first-tymer |

The historic downtown area is a beautiful part of the city! The old buildings are well preserved and are amazing. The layout of the city with all the squares is unique and was planned well for its citizens with lots of green space. Wear comfortable shoes or sneakers and plan on a lot of exploring! I would suggest a trolley ride to get you to the various areas and then some additional exploring yourself. Beautiful time of year to visit since some things are blooming (azalea’s) and other plants just starting.
Must see when you are in Savannah area.

Old Savannah

By Vitor Odisio |

A jewel at Georgia! What city! Perfect constructions representing the old architecture of US! Amazing food and the city is completely prepared for tourism! Highly recommended

Beautiful Walking City

So much to do and see! People in Savanna are so friendly! If you love to walk around and see so much of a cities culture, Savannah is your place!

Awesome Savannah

A must see location. Do the trolley tour to see the historic surroundings. Do the RiverWalk area. Go to the Old Pink House for an exceptional meal.

Unbelievable stayand ability to walk a city to see such an enormous number of historic sites, homes along with beautiful parks and squares.

My Savannah experience

By marcus h |

Such a wonderful city. I absolutely love Savannah GA. So much to do and plenty of places to park and a great place.

Step back in time and enjoy the city, its people the restaurants and beautiful architectural craftsmanship of and era by

By Dan |

Our first time visiting and experiencing Savannah and it’s “Historic District.”
It was well worth the trip from East Tennessee, with 3 of our adult children and 6 grandchildren.
You can choose to walk along the beautiful Savannah river enjoying the parks that flows beside a cobblestone street next to wonderful restaurants and shops, or drive along the city’s streets and take in the splendor of its historic architectural surroundings.
The clean well kept streets, sidewalks, and parks
are a testimony of the city’s commitment to its residents.

Historical Savannah Georgia.

By Juan C |

I am a history buff so being here where so many historical figures were and lived is amazing. It is great that the historical part of town is kept safe from demolition.

Simply livable and adorable

By Schaengel |

A fantastically beautiful, clean, friendly and safe city. The historic district is very pretty to look at, houses like trees

Do not miss

This iconic city is built on it's Historic District. So much to see and learn about the history of the United States. Walk - Eat - Share your thoughts with others in this historical masterpiece.

A quick peek into the past

By Stay23591284148 |

A lot of information given out. Savannah is beautiful. It was a nice sample of one of the homes. I wish we had more time to visit other homes as well.

Great place to walk around and enjoy

By etraveler123 |

What a great area to stay and explore. Great to walk around, enjoy the historic houses and B and B's and also restaruants and coffee shops.

Must See

By TravelMaven42 |

For a smallish city, Savannah has a big personality and that shines through in the historic district. Explore this area during the day or grab a cocktail and check out these glorious old mansions lit-up in the evening. There is so much history here. You can learn more via app tours or by purchasing tickets to tour the insides of these historic homes.

classic southern charm

By 61Boss |

We enjoyed our three days on Savannah. The Old Town Trolley (hop on and hop off) is probably the most efficient way to get an overview and to make judgments about where to hop off. Old Town has many competitors but they seem to have the most extensive tour. Most of the city is very walkable. Make sure to stop at the many parks too. Kids of all ages will appreciate the waterfront, and there is good shopping downtown (local stores have not yet been displaced by chains).

Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home

By Dawgman34 |

Fascinating! Our docent was Jane, who I believe is the Director of the Museum. Jane’s love, respect, enthusiasm for Flannery brims as she explains Flannery’s early life, and how much of an influence her home played on the budding writer. Jane also explains the intricacies of Flannery’s early life, and how this aided and abetted her trajectory.

Loved the history

By Sfreiling |

The squares, along with moss covered tree streets, gas lanterns, elaborate porches, style, was amazing. Loved everything about it. The history along the way, tours of the homes, great eateries.

Old Town

By Ashley D |

Cute district, clean, a little busy, but it was nice to see people out and exploring! Great little places to walk through and shop, grab a bite to eat, or sit and people watch.

Amazing

By Alli |

So beautiful, and it was close to our hotel, so it was nice to look at all of the amazing architecture and go for a stroll. Loved it!

Beautiful Homes and Historic Buildings

By NewYorkTraveler2010 |

The historic area of Savannah is spread out and a bit of a distance from most hotels, so I suggest using the free bus or local trolley tour. There are many historic homes (now museums) to visit, several parks, churches, and the squares. Plan on a day for the historic district itself if you like wandering around and looking at buildings (like me).

History and Architecture Galore

By DutchLace |

We parked at one of the city parking ramps and then walked the many Squares and parks. Made our way to the river too. There are many ways to see the area with private tours or the off and on trolley (we didn't). Or do some homework and make your own map of interest as we did. Rainbow Row wasn't worth the walk. Forsyth Park is beautiful. Riverwalk is unique and plenty of restaurants to choose from. Leopold's for ice-cream would be a treat, but couldn't convince my spouse to wait the long long long line.

Time for a clean up -Savannah

By Frank Williams |

I love only the historic homes. the river walk is old and noisy. The truth is, that the area looks un-kept. The streets in the historic district are not clean. The squares need to be restored. I was last in Savannah as an Architect student from UGA in 1982.
It actually looked better back then. 90% of the homes need major restoration. The private gardens are not maintained. It's still beautiful, but lost it's shine. You cannot leave the tourist / historic area. to be safe. And yes, there are homeless in the parks.
That said, some of the best Southern Restaurants in Georgia.. Lady and Son's was great, Pirates house was amazing, Mrs. Wilke's was great too, as was the Pink House.
Don't waste your money eating on the river walk, or buying those tiny tasteless cookies.

Beautiful houses

By Kathleen R |

Beautiful houses and streets to walk or drive along. Take a tour to learn about the houses or a bus tour to learn about the area too

Great city, Lots of history

By njtess96 |

Awesome place, easy to get around by walking. I never even took a car anywhere once I arrived in the historic district.

Very nice Southern charm

By Wansfel |

Great walkable historic district with many restored buildings to enjoy, town squares to relax in, and a few homes to tour inside.

Put on your Walking Shoes!

By mgmchugh |

The architecture, the history and just the overall vibe is one you want to experience. Laid back and fun! Easy to get around, safe and walkable.

Savannah trip

By Classynogin |

My husband and I went to Savannah. We took a trolly tour around the city,it was beautiful. The history was so amazing and we had lunch at the Boar's Head for which was wonderful. There is shopping up-and-down the river. We stayed at the Staybridge hotel right across the street from the river. Our trip got cut short had to leave early. We are planning a trip to go back . If you like history you must visit Savannah GA.

Tastes and history made fun

By Maureen G |

Had a lovely tour and tasted many mini meals at 6 restaurants. Patrick was excellent with drink selections and we met new friends to enjoy the tour with

Wow the homes!!

By Kim H |

Some of the homes are just beautiful and huge! Loved the fish downspouts. And the Square's design was really interesting to know.

Impressive Savannah

By Kim H |

Savannah didn’t disappoint. We did a tour bus (not our best decision). The houses, squares, and museums were fantastic.

Take your time

By Tim |

The architecture is breathtaking. One building after another will not disappoint you as you wonder through the Historic part of Savannah. It always makes me jealous as I think about the workmanship and quality of the area.
You must walk and take your time. You can stop for a rest a one of many parks around town.

Historic city

By Mary M |

The city has so much history and ghost stories. It is very walkable but we noticed it did not seem very handicap friendly. But they definitely support the military which is a beautiful thing. The buildings are amazing, the parks, the people. Fantastic

Beautiful historic site

By ANDRES M |

Amazing area to walk around!! Everywhere you look there is a house, museum, square full of history!! You feel really safe and welcome by this amazing city!!

Amazing architecture

By Denise G |

I loved everything about Savannah but the historic homes were probably my favorite part of my visit.

Some good, Some not so

By Mike M |

We spent a long weekend here as it has been on my bucket list for a while. American Airlines has a direct flight there from Philly and now Avelo is also added a direct flight from Wilmington making it easier to get to. Lots of history and plenty of shops, some tacky but some with great merchandise. Some great restaurants (45 Bistro is our fav) and some disappointing. We took the Old Savannah Tour trolley to get acclimated to the city and discovered the American Prohibition Museum. My wife is not a history buff nor does she like museums but had a great time here. Check out the Marriot Waterfront lobby...a hidden gem.

Southern Charm!

By Mary C |

Savannah is a walk back in history, full of Southern charm and good food! It's an easily walkable city. The squares are charming with Spanish moss and magnolia trees!

Great time.

By Rose B |

Seeing all the beautiful homes and learning the history. Everyone was so friendly. Most beautiful trees. No

This place is forgotten in time

By Michael Samonas |

We strolled down from the river street via Bull street to forsyth park. The colonial building surrounded the streets were traveling you many decades back in time. The whole experience was marvelous. I want to visit Savannah again.

Gorgeous

By L.M.K. |

What a wonderful place to discover! The houses surrounded by this lush vegetation are guaranteed to fall in love! A stop en route to Florida is ideal, sleeping there for a night for a guided tour on foot, by bike, by tram, etc., of the historic district is essential. The history of the cotton trade…
The fountain in Forsyth Park is magnificent, the houses on Bull, Gaston, Drayton, Whitaker, Gwinnett streets are unique and what can we say about the history behind these doors…
We will return!

Lovely Day to Stroll the District

By Gwensdream |

We had never been to Savannah and had a wonderful time walking the district at our pace. It is truly an amazing city and November was not crowded. I was fascinated by the architecture and could have wandered for hours!

Historic District Didn’t Disappoint

By Jeramie |

Savannah’s Historic District was slightly better than I expected and certainly didn’t disappoint! It has 22 squares to explore. The district is very walkable and fairly easy to navigate. There’s a tremendous amount of history here that dates back to the 1700’s! Some reviewers complain about an abundance of homeless but this wasn’t our experience. Yes, it’s a large city with homelessness and crime but be alert and make good choices and you’ll be fine. Savannah really should be on every American History Buff’s bucket list!

Southern Charm

By nowpacking |

The beautiful squares, gorgeous houses, fountains and parks, azaleas in bloom, trees draped in Spanish moss, cemeteries, history around every corner and of course the pralines!
Wonderful trip!

Historically wonderful

By Linda F |

We are both retired social studies teachers and everywhere you look there’s history in the city. Not to mention wonderful restaurants and really neat places to shop.

Terrific Trolley Tours

By Mary Ann B |

We took the trolley tours several times. Our initial guide was a woman named Hannah and she was amazing! You learn so much history. They even have guest actors that board in period costumes and entertain you. You can use the trolleys for your transportation because you can get on ad off where ever you choose. I only wished they ran later than 4:30.

What a city..!!

By Gary S |

I love this city!! From the downtown district along the river with its shops and restaurants and bars to the wonderful historic area with its beautiful Spanish moss-laden trees in its clean squares!

Savannah GA is a most relaxing, and Historic, visit.

By JosephEber |

Savannah Historic district is the original planned city of Savannah GA still in almost the original layout. Many of the homes go back to the 1700 and early 1800s. The "Pirates' House" restaurant includes the oldest house in the city, built in 1735 as part of it's structure.
Savannah Historic district is a good walking visit. It's a little over a mile, square, and almost all of it is easy to walk. "City Market" is a segment restricted to pedestrian, or bicycle.
The city includes 22 squares that are each a small park, so there is always the opportunity to rest and relax near at hand. Many of the old homes are now museums. Take the Old Savannah trolley tour for an overview and then see the individual locations that get your interest.

Gorgeous

By daearz77 |

We did one of the hop on and off trolley tours. The history in this city is amazing. It was beautiful throughout and I cannot wait to return.

Scary. Felt like we were in a Mad Max movie.

By Dsgandlcf |

I wouldn’t consider this a safe city to go to and certainly not a place for families. Lots of closed stores and people drag racing and we witnessed people being harassed. Was pretty scary here and we didn’t expect that.

Such a lovely looking town

By Diane K |

We truly enjoyed walking and driving throughout the historical district. It is well maintained and many parks every few blocks. A lovely place to spend a day.

Dripping with southern charm

By Cherry V |

A trolley tour is the best way to get an overview of the area. It is quite large so pick the most interesting spots to walk around.

The very definition of Southern Charm

By Pamela C |

Romantic and walkable city with green spaces throughout. Very relaxed, slow paced and lined with one charming house after another. The architecture alone is breathtaking and it’s the very definition of southern charm. We were happy to visit, explore and experience this district! Definitely a unique place with a lot of character. Will be definitely be back! While you’re walking, be sure to admire all of the uniquely and ornate doors! I’m inspired to go home and paint my door red!

Streets are charming but disturbing 😳

By Elizabeth P |

The streets are very charming in parts ,the southern architecture is very lovely particularly the steam boat gothic style. The streets tend to be dirty with litter lining the gutters which is extremely disgusting it’s sad that such pretty streets have trash strewn around. And they also have many smokers. There are homeless people out there haggling you for money even when you say no and will follow you which is very unpleasant and is particularly uncomfortable and unsafe when you are a woman.Go somewhere better ,safer and prettier especially if you are a women even with a man ,this area has a ton of violent crime against women it is extremely dangerous for women to be here no where is safe in downtown.

The homes are beautiful!

By The Delta Cowgirl |

The Historic District is beautiful although very busy with foot and auto traffic. We took a Trolley Tour to see the District and recommend it to avoid the long walk and traffic. Highlights were the fabulous churches in the District! Kudos to Savannah for preserving this area.

Too crowded

By Lila Navarro |

A friend and I went to visit the week of New Years and it was crowded. To the point that people were walking in the middle of the street. A beautiful city to enjoy for sure but way to crowded to really enjoy the sights.

Excellent location for travel

By Veronica H |

We had the best time in Savannah! Amazing history, friendly people, great food. Very walkable. Truly a gem to visit!

Can I get my 3 days back?

By Jrbacon |

I don't understand all the positive reviews, based upon all the "charming" pictures and glowing reviews, we drove 8 hours here for my daughter's birthday. We rented an Airbnb in the Historic district on Bull Street, specifically near Wright and Johnson Square. We wanted to leave shortly after arriving. Where are all the reviews about the homeless people everywhere? The squares all around us had homeless people laying in the benches and loitering all day. We felt very unsafe. There were also gang signs spray painted everywhere. The whole city just seemed run-down with the small exception of near Jones Ave. We took a trolley tour to see what we were missing but again just drove past blocks of homeless people. We left a day early to go home.

Beautiful and historic

Savannah has everything to offer to enjoy a southern city full of history, shopping and entertainment. Loved our visit.

Disappointed to say the least.

By kerrih442018 |

So I picked this to stork district With high expectations. I found the city to be rather dirty. When I asked people for suggestions of things to do only recommended the drunk ghost tours. Not impressed. Won’t be back.

Quick weekend trip

By Clint M |

A great history trip , very clean, felt very safe, plenty of places to eat and drink lots and lots of beautiful architecture to see and tour we will be going back again soon

Awesome place

By lynjoriak31 |

I can’t believe it took me so long to visit this beautiful place! The food, the architecture, the history and the beach! Everywhere we went was so historical and classy. The trees were uniformed and it reminded me of New Orleans with the tasteful cuisines and St Augustine FL with the wonderful beach and historical views. Such a great place to wind down and relax. I went here for a 19th year anniversary and enjoyed walking on river street and then to Forythse park and market street. I will definitely be back and I also loved the short commute to Hilton head sc.

A must see!

Southern Charm with American and Colonial history

By Danny S |

Savannah’s historical area is a real treat. Houses are in excellent condition without new renovations. Savannah has laws to protect these properties.

The best way to see these is via a bus tour, called an on and off tour. The one I took, twice had 14 stops. Riders may depart the bus and walk around and catch a later bus. One ticket is good for a day of riding.

Savannah is based on a series of “trusts” or specific sized sections with a park, surrounded by homes.

Each park - Madison, Oglethorpe, Wright, Washington, et Al. - is named for a historical figure. President, governor, colonial figure, etc. The tour bus drivers are a font of information and each provides something different than a previous one.

These tour rides are about $25 per ticket and good for the day. Note that multiple tours exist and the haunted tour (for instance) is separate from the historical tour.

Savannah is a must see for anyone interested in U.S. history. Many movies were filmed (in part) in Savannah as well: Forest Gump, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, et Al.

There's literally nothing like Savannah's historic district anywhere else. You MUST go.

By LiteWallet |

As a history lover and lover of allllllllllll the old things everywhere, I was so thrilled to finally visit Savannah! The city's historic district looks bigger on paper (on a map) than it is in real life, but I do strongly suggest a map because we got turned around more in Savannah than nearly anywhere else I've ever been. GPS was of no help even when oriented to walking directions -- we frequently overshot our destination or walked in circles, argh. But still, Savannah is very walkable, though if you go in July like we did, you'll want to hydrate and rest and maybe stay out of the sun during the worst heat of the day. There is so much to see, and the brilliant addition of the multiple public squares, with their verdant spaces where people can gather and which make lovely homes for several monuments, really adds something to the city you just won't find anywhere else. I found myself wishing Oglethorpe had founded more cities in the US! Wear comfy shoes and grab a map, and if you're booking a hotel online, be sure to check TripAdvisor to be sure it's in a safe location. We found ourselves in a dicey area once or twice, but overall the historic district is extremely safe and very clean too.

So much history, so little time

By Dad-O |

You could spend days touring this city and still only scratch the surface. Every block holds so much history. We've visited on two separate day trips and plan to come back again.

Parking meters everywhere, takes time and costs money. "hotel.com"is not senior citizen friendly.

By Gerard H |

Savannah is a beautiful city. The historic area is filled with history. I will not go back because everywhere you go you must pay for parking, even in residential areas. It is a real pain wasting lots of time paying with the parking meters. What do seniors do if they do not have a debit/credit card.
We used "hotel.com" to book the hotel room. We discovered it required an "app" to get in. The app was not easy for first time users. Plus the wait time for customer service was not acceptable. It took over 45 minutes to just check-in. I'll never use "hotel.com" again. I'll pay more to have a real person at a front desk help me check-in. For people who do not use apps do not book with "hotel.com".

Drove by

By Roses |

.. and that was enough for me. I didn’t bother going back to walk and look around.
Honestly, this area looked run down and even unsafe! I wasn’t sure what there was to see and I was shocked at the state the neighborhood was in.

Great place for a girls trip

By Nina B |

Our group of 3 friends loved our stay in Savannah. We stayed at Homewood Suites at the river front. Very convenient for tourist shopping and area restaurants. Lots to see and learn about. The history of the area is interesting.

Quick visit to Savannah

By ksmoola1 |

Enjoyed touring the Historic District. Took the sightseeing tour on the river. Would return for a longer visit!

There is very little to do in historic Savannah

By LV |

The museums are terrible. The history museum at the Welcome Center looks like a 12 year old put it together. The ship museum is a bit better, but not by much. Restaurants are good, nothing spectacular. The city market takes all of 30 min. The trolly is nice. The homes are not restored and beautiful like Charleston. The battery is beautiful. The Savannah waterfront is sad. Skip a visit to Savannah

Can't miss it...must see it.

By Nate080411 |

You can't go to Savannah without spending time in it's historic district. You would be tough to miss it actually, but the entire area is gorgeous. From rich history, the parks, great architecture, statues etc. you name it and you will find it in the historic district. You should spend a day just walking around and checking out all the little nooks of this city.

Fantastic!!!

By steve b |

We have travelled to many cities and this is one of the most unique cities we've visited. It has so much history and it is so conducive to walking.

Very nice but be careful.

By DH Butler |

This area has a variety of great homes and squares. All of the forementioned homes and squares are absolutely wonderful. We did a self guided walk and tour. In every single square there was at least one bum asking for money. This was a major distraction. When we were leaving we were verbally acosted by a group of young men stating that they would "steal your car", and the "we will steal your s..t". We ignored them and walked the other way because as older adults, we would not have a chance against six to eight young teenagers. This encounter made both of us not to like Savannah as much as we thought we would. We were in Savannah about twenty years ago and did not experience anything like this.

Disappointed!

By TravelFan007 |

Disappointed. We live in Atlanta area and used to go to Savannah more regularly. Had not been for 4 or 5 years. I was disappointed. Historic district, while beautiful, has really gone downhill. So many homeless in the beautiful squares. Waterfront area dirty, never before seen it like this. A lot of trash and homeless. Probably will be quite awhile before we return. Sad, it is such a beautiful place.

We got to go back in time

By coberg |

We spent three days walking around and admiring the magnificent homes in the area. We walked during both the day and night and always felt safe.

Wonderful Experience

By R Scott |

Savannah is an extraordinary destination. The homes and moss laden trees are simply, beautiful. The food scene is one of the best around, and overall, a city that easily rivals some European cities. Be sure to stay for a few days because you'll note be able to fully enjoy the area if you try to do it in a day.

Peachy! could anything be prettier?

By KellerJB |

A beautiful place to walk and soak up history. Many house museums, restaurants, tours available. Spectacular sights.

Beautiful City with Small Town Charm

By L P |

If you are looking for Southern charm and fabulous architecture, look no further than downtown Savannah. We were impressed by the seamless blend of old and modern, ease of walkability as well as the level of cleanliness of the city at large. There were some homeless people around, but compared to other cities we've visited, Savannah seems to have a better handle on this concern.

Would not return

By shan262 |

Beautiful trees, squares and homes but I did not enjoy Savannah. Drunk people yelling from pub pedals, drunks slumped on sidewalks, noisy loud revving car engines and sirens all day and night. We also visited Charleston which was charming and had none of that. Couldn’t wait to leave Savannah. It’s trying to be New Orleans, dirty and unsafe.

Great area

By Karla |

This is the place to stay in my opinion! You are close to all the Historical sites which are in walking distance to one another! They is a lot of history in this area.

Girls Trip

By Doublej317 |

My group stayed in the historic district and it was perfect. Close to so many things that you can walk to & so beautiful. Be sure to prepare for parking- approx $12 a day

Wonderful walkable historic district

By Greg G |

We walked and walked and walked all over the historic district and tried to see all 22 parks. What a wonderful 3 days in Savannah@

Awesome awesome. Awesome

By iam C |

The experience was awesome from beginning to end from check out check in. We had an awesome time just having conversations with everybody who works here.

Good food and shopping

By VA45 |

Wonderful keeped up and good shopping and food. Area is safe clean and close to everthing. The old Spinish fort is across the street.

An interesting place to visit

By TravelGal1954 |

The beauty of Savannah can be seen in the garden district. The fountains and buildings in the historic district are delightful. I would highly recommend staying at the Westin unless you want a B&B.

Great place to visit and stroll around

By greg M |

Great place to visit, walk around, enjoy various food and drinks from numerous small places. Many rooftop venues to choose from as well

Savannah is a quaint step back in time.

By Sue H |

The 22 squares, parks and trees in the historic district give Savannah an intimate feel. There is so much history and beauty, plus the people are very friendly.

Best District for Learning Savannah’s History

By Tony F. |

The historic district has a lot of Savannah’s history. All the parks and squares, museums, and historic houses and landmarks all have amazing history.

Beautiful Area

By Nancy H |

Wish we could have spent more time there but only did tour as there is so little parking & husband handicapped.

Savanah is a gem in Georgia tucked away from frequent hurricane. Beautiful town with river view and River street.

By Jayanthi G |

Great historical district with lots of history pre civil war all through Civil war . Influence by France and English . Architecture exhibits including museums.

Beautiful, walkable historic city

By Montauk123 |

My wife and I spent a day and a half wondering around Savannah. Very walkable. Many beautiful squares throughout. Good food. Don't miss!

Old Savannah.....ahhh

By BentleyBoy |

Absolutely Glorious! This is well worth a stop on your travels! Beautiful Architecture, Clean and Pleasant. I was indeed 'pleasantly' surprised to see just How Much I liked it. I had heard 'stories' about crime so, decided not to see this great city after dark but, truly enjoyed the experience in my 3 hour visit. Brought my Sprinter RV, parked on the street and covered the entire District by e-Bike. I wasn't alone, there are several Bike Tours so, despite the traffic, it's def. 'safe' to ride the streets. Saw a great Gallery, Historical Homes, beautiful Parks and visited multiple Boutiques & Shops. Wonderful Lunch at Gryphon Grille with stained glass ceilings & chandeliers. Whole Heartedly recommend.

This is a scenic city at the right time of year.

By Roger S |

This is a wonderful walkable city with exquisite scenery in the historic district. Among the highlights are Forsythe Park, the house museums, the city squares, the Prohibition Museum, East Jones Street, and the river walk district. Late March is a perfect time to go -- the flowers (mostly azaleas) are in full bloom and the weather is good. And, of course, the Spanish moss is a nice touch.

Probably the nicest place I have visited in the US

By Michael H |

Probably the nicest place I have visited in the US - historic down town does provide a nice atmosphere. Met a lot of very nice people during my walks in the city.

Dirty Rude Polluted

By The Joy |

Savannah is the most overrated city. It is very dirty and smells of urine and rotten egg. The city is littered with trash and abandoned buildings. It’s obvious they don’t care about the environment here. I have witnessed people throwing their trash on the ground like it was a normal thing to do. We were at a red light and the car in front of us just opened their door and dropped a McDonald’s bag full of trash on the ground and drove off. I could not believe my eyes! The customer service is horrible as well. I have never received such poor customer service as I have here in Savannah. No “thank you” or “you’re welcome” etc. I have given this place many chances and wanted to like it so bad. I avoid Savannah as much as possible :-(

SHD amazing

By CanuckAlberta |

Wow what an amazing city, so much interesting history, culture, architecture, and sights in a relatively condensed area. I think it compares to some of the great cities of Europe.

Beautiful

By Bud_n_Sissy_Davis |

Beautiful! The tree lined streets and Spanish moss make this one of the most beautiful places to see. Very dog friendly too. So much to see and do. You can't find a bad meal here either.

Beautiful and historic.

By Pamela D |

I love everything about the Savannah Historic District. So many interesting buildings, squares, parks, restaurants, shops, well kept sidewalks and streets and just a feeling of safely and comfort.

Very historical part of town!

By Jesus D |

Do not forget to take a trolly tour! There is a lot to see. wear comfortable shoes. Well worth it! I had the old Jewish temple on my to do list. I also visited the market place. The architecture is outstanding and well preserved!

Awesome place with lots of gun shootings (mostly after dark)

By Chris Henderson |

IMPORTANT, please know, there is a DAILY problem with suspects shooting guns in the tourism area of the historic district. I witnessed several shootings, and decided to stay in after dark on my last night.

While I was there, the mayor announced (28 Jun 2022) that he will make a business curfew at 11 pm so no one will get hurt! He didn't say if this was a street curfew just businesses will shut down so people won't be in the street and become victims.

BUT until he does PLEASE do not go out after dark. Beautiful, beautiful, heavenly place!

It's such a great place but there is no protection except your awareness, for the awful violent crime after dark PLEASE BE AWARE

Don’t miss this tour

By kmuehlbach |

Wonderful tour and highly recommend. Our tour guide Ben was knowledgeable and quite a comedian. Made the tour so fun. Will be recommending this tour to everyone in Kansas City.

Gorgeous homes

By Diana R |

We visited Savannah recently and enjoyed the beautiful architecture of the homes in the historic district. They are all different but all very pretty. Definitely recommend visiting Savannah. We’ll be back!

Savannah, filled with a rich and varied history

By esbpnp |

After visiting Europe several times and becoming immersed in their history, this trip is reminding us of the deep history of our own country. Savannah, is a city whose original purpose was to defend against the Spanish in Florida. James Oglethorpe was the British military leader who had a vision for Savannah which was carried out to establish the beautiful city it is today. A few facts:
Savannah resisted slavery for many decades, it was only after Oglethorpe left to return to England did it take hold here.
Sahannah is a city that welcomed people from all over the world, with many religious beliefs, as evident by the many magnificent houses of worship that skirt the 22 remaining squares of the city. Savannah was also very progressive in the Civil rights movement, with its citizens, both black and white, participating in an 18 month ban on retailers to make a statement, as a result of this ban, Savannah desegregated 2 years before it became federally mandated. We are here a week and frankly it’s not enough time to explore all that Savannah has to offer historically and culturally

What is there not to love?!

By KristinNM |

What is there not to love!?! Beautiful historic homes, gardens, squares, shopping, restaurants, churches, architecture .... I could go on and on. You just want to take your time to stroll around and take it all in, stopping where you wish. I fell in love with it all!

Amazing and beautiful Savannah

By Travelaround59 |

Needless to say I was blown away by the beauty of Savannah Antique District.
The buildings are absolutely to die for, the extensive explanation outside the main focus places are enough for you to understand about the period of the Secession War and walking around Savannah is so evocative, starting with the Spanish Moss cascading from the trees to the wonderful Regency or Victorian Buildings or the gas lighting at night of the lantern outside the houses.
Savannah is a little priceless gem to enjoy forever!!!

Pleasant but needs more historical focus

By cfuller603 |

It was pleasant to stroll through the 22 squares. We took the trolly several times and benefitted from the overview. In the end, we only visited the Historical Museum at the Visitors Center which is quite outdated and needs a major uplift and the Prohibition Museum which was interesting though a bit kitchy. It was nice to walk along the River Front. I would have liked more attention to history.

Great vacation!

By Jerry T |

Savannah Historic District is phenomenal, it’s everything I’ve read and seen about it! There is only so many places one person can eat, but every place I was dining at had fantastic dishes. The folks in charge of the tours and running the stores were friendly and hospitable, I can’t wait to go again!

Lovely Savannah

By Pam R |

Savannah is a beautiful walkable city with so many beautiful house.
Just be sure to watch you step as the sidewalks are pretty tricky and there is so much to look at.

Savannah at its best

By Footprints56804 |

Staying at the Kehoe House was a great experience. Everyone was so welcoming and accommodating. Terri the cook…you are remarkable. Kelly Grayline trolly tour was perfect as well. Thank you Lieutenant Dan for the enriched history.
We will definitely return.

savannah has my heart ❤️

By Linda M |

I want to go back! It’s so beautiful! I live in Saint Augustine, Florida, and we of course have a beautiful little historic district, but in all honesty, Savannah is far better. from the beautiful shade trees to the gorgeous fountains and wonderful little shops and restaurants, this place has my heart. We traveled with our two little dogs, because I knew how dog friendly it is. I wasn’t expecting to be invited into establishments with them though. St. Augustine is also dog friendly to a degree, but many places you would have to eat outside with them. Our dogs were welcomed inside with open arms at many places we visited in Savannah. I love the laid-back easy vibe.. my husband and I really enjoyed ourselves and I cannot wait to come back!

Historical Haven

By Alyssa S |

The historic district is absolutely breathtaking. We enjoyed exploring easily on foot, as well as on the historic Savannah Trolly. We rode around all parts of the historic district and enjoyed all of the gorgeous architecture, restaurants, bars, shops, and entertainment. Highly recommend visiting!

Wonderful Area to Walk - Step Back in Time

By Ann T |

Very pleasant area to walk around in. Something like 12 small squares / parks. Beautiful homes and neighborhoods. Not a huge fan of the riverfront. That area a bit of a tourist trap.

Lovely Historic Savannah Parks, Structures and Live Oaks

By Kathe H |

My husband and I took the 90-minute trolley tour. Our tour guide driver, Ben, was very welcoming and the trolley was clean and lovely. Ben was a true history buff and he knew so much about Savannah and it's history and surrounding areas. He customized our tour based on our interests and shared his love for the beautiful city. He was witty, funny, articulate and offered a wealth of information about the Historic District of Savannah, as well as other nearby areas of interest for dining, shopping, and strolling around. It was a great time and we’d definitely recommend Ben to anyone who wants a beautiful morning or afternoon to tour Savannah's "must sees".

Great Place to take a walk and see the great houses and local parks

By LoveVirginia |

The area has such charm and the houses and gardens are delightful with parks every couple blocks. There are plenty of places to stop like SCAD and the Cathedral

Great to Walk Around

By Jeremy C |

Savannah is a great walking city, with all of the historic squares and old houses. Well worth the time to explore.

Fun afternoon in Savannah

By Abralperkins |

Excellent and fun afternoon in Savannah! The historic district is a must see if you like
History and culture. 10 out of 10 recommend!

This is Why you Come to Savannah

By Ira S |

The historic district is a walkable area full of small parks, squares as they call them locally, historical building, restaurants and bars. It is well worth a day or two to wander the streets, visit the museums and eat too much.
You can visit Chippewa Square where the park bench scene in Forrest Gump was filmed.
Savannah is an "open city" which means you can walk around drinking, which although not my cup of tea, seems to be something people enjoy.
The river walk is delightful, and a nice place to sit and watch the hoards of tourists walk around sipping their beers.
It is a part of the city, remember there is more to Savannah than just the historic district, that is well worth spending a day or two.

Beautiful area to stroll

By Alex Coughenour |

My husband and I visited Savannah for his birthday weekend. We intentionally did not make any plans during the day on both Friday and Saturday just so have enough time to roam the streets, popping into stores and bars and I am so glad we did. There's so much to see and it's officially become one of my favorite cities in the country.

December 22-27, 2021

By Mori Monteverde |

The area has a lot of history, and the scenery is great in the homes neighborhoods.
Riverwalk- is quite dirty & almost dangerous when walking the cobble stone streets are uneven, we saw a few people that fell (and no they were not drunk)
I'm glad I went it was nice family experience, but I wouldn't go back.
For the most part is pretty dirty, and the restaurants had horrible service, staff were not friendly. Everyone told me prior to my trip how nice this place was and how I would love it, maybe I had higher expectations

Nothing more beautiful than Historic Savannah

By Tayadog1 |

There is no end to the beauty and history that exists in Savannah. We just spent 4 days exploring the city, the river walk, many restaurants and tours.

Not Wheelchair friendly

By Carmen A |

What a beautiful city, with so much history and natural beauty. Great food too. But if you are traveling with someone in a wheelchair you are not able to walk around safely. Cobblestone streets and alot of uneven pavements no ramps either

Time Travel

By Billy B |

Walking around the Historic District is like taking a walk back in time. Homes that were built in the 1700's still standing and in Pristine condition. All that's missing are the horse and buggies.

Historic and Fun City

By TravelingSoccerLoon |

From a historical or architectural standpoint, Savannah is not as extensive or as interesting as Charleston, but is still an interesting city to visit and has a more gritty fun New Orleans feel to it. Visiting Forsyth Park, the many beautiful and historic city squares, City Market and River Street are all worthwhile. Definitely a party atmosphere in town.

Beautifully restored and maintained area

By RudySzymon |

Smartly designed with 24 park like squares, this city is very pretty. All the buildings are in great condition. The squares have beautiful foliage.

Well Worth a Visit!

By rzahm |

Savannah is a unique town with a long history, and it shows. It is hard to tell where the Historic Downtown ends. The many squares, parks, churches, and buildings are a feast for the eyes. It has to be one of the most beautiful cities in America.
The amount of activities are endless. Restaurants, tours, river boat cruises to name a few. Everytime we visit Savannah, we always find something new.
It is a must see!

Savannah did not disappoint

By dstambaugh3 |

Downtown Savannah was excellent and a great place to wander and walk. Beautiful, well-kept homes and streets. Massive oaks and Spanish moss was everywhere. History was evident everywhere and the park system was fantastic. Great restaurants and coffee shops were easy to find and walk to and it was fun to be able to grab a drink and wander around town.

Charming!

By Noraatc |

We had such a beautiful long walk in the charming historic center with its perfect grid of streets intersected by green squares, typical antebellum houses adorned with elaborate iron balconies, elegant mansions with tall windows, magnificent leafy oaks covered with mysteriously looking Spanish moss… Lovely day in gorgeous weather.

Take Time to Savor Savannah

By Lead2829 |

So much to see and do, you need a few days. We will definitely come back if we get the chance and stay downtown. Everything is beautiful. A few more transients then I was expecting but not bad.

Beautiful historic district

By Dave T |

From the riverside street up to Forsyth park this city is very easy to walk and navigate around. Jones street, both east and west side are easily the most picturesque houses but there is lots to see.

You will love it!

By My Info S |

I love Savannah for it’s history, architecture and beautiful squares. I am visiting at least twice a year traveling from New England.
I enjoy southern hospitality!

Historic District Not that Nice

By Kathy F |

The squares are interesting. Some of the homes are nice. Some are boarded up. The whole area is very dirty and unkept. There is garbage everywhere. The tress and bushes are not trimmed. There is a very large homeless population in the historic district and along the river. Doesn't seem like the city is doing much to help.

Beautiful, walkable area. Many, many parks.

By Denise M |

Take one of the hop on/off tours and you can explore this wonderful area at your own pace. The Land tours are better than the Sea tours.

Savannah revisited

By Dennis V |

Savannah has plenty of charm[ multiple squares, waterfront, live oak, Spanish moss, long history]. But it has gotten much bigger/busier since we last visited 25 years ago. Lost some charm.
Definitely, definitely worth a visit... One visit for us would have bene fine.

Wonderful

By Stacie T |

Beautiful city! Especially the carriage ride with the history lesson! Will be back to do this again for sure. Wonderful restaurants and the drag show was so much fun!

Delightfully walkable area!

By Simone Melancon |

Since this part of the city is laid out in a grid, it is easy to navigate for visitors. The regular inclusion of beautiful squares not only pleases the senses but slows car traffic. Truly a gem of a city for the pedestrian.

Unique

By Mackenzy P |

Not something you’ll find anywhere else. They’ve preserved most of the original architecture of the city. No condos, high rises, apartment complexes, just history.

Fourth of July in Savannah was Fantastic!

By Christine R |

My first time in Savannah and I was not disappointed! The city is quaint and beautiful! The history surrounds you and the ghost tours are definitely worth the time. My favorite dinner spot was the Pirate House, do not miss the opportunity to dine there! We also did a Brunch Cruise on the Riverboat and that was great as well. Southern Fried Chicken, quiche, and warm peach cobbler were just a few of the highlights of their buffet. We stayed at the McMillan Inn and WOW! What a beautiful place to stay!! Worth every penny! The house and rooms were exquisite, the hospitality was a pure joy and the location was perfect. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a true Southern Hospitality experience. I will definitely be visiting again and staying at the McMillan Inn.

This was way better than I expected. Savannah is a gem!

Beautiful, historic place. We could have spent many more days there but we ran out of time. The history is fascinating

By kennethkR9329PZ |

We only had a day & half here, but we will be back. Very enjoyable, but too much to see in such a short time!
A lot of historical info I didn’t learn in American history

Questionably safe.

By Fleetwoodswife |

You know what is sad about this beautiful historic city? It has been taken over by the street people and/or homeless. There was trash everywhere, clothes, shoes and food. I have been to many cities and this was one of the worst

Gorgeous, Walkable, Aromatic City

By taxsom2 |

Such a beautiful city! We didn’t rent a car but thoroughly enjoyed walking and exploring. So much to see and the aroma of the jasmine in the air is incredible!!

A nice walking tour.

By essem_44 |

Just a wonderful walk in a wonderful neibourghood.
We walk slowly for 4 hours.
Enjoying the beautiful squares and the nice homes.
It is quiet and peaceful.
Loved it.

Great architecture

By TravelingBum10 |

We drove around the area after going to the park. The houses there are so beautiful. There is an area with different colored homes next to each other. Reminded me of Charleston a little.

Beautiful!

By Jennifer G |

Beautiful homes, beautiful public squares, beautiful parks, beautiful old oak trees with Spanish moss. The whole district is absolutely gorgeous with tons of history around every corner!

Beautiful historic district

By Jamey B |

Savannah is a great place to visit with a very rich history going back to the early 18th century. Their historic district is beautiful and well laid out for walking around.

Loved the historic district

By sdolan54 |

We enjoyed walking everywhere and seeing the various squares, the people, and the various inns. The Historic District is THE place to stay. Our preference is for Inns/B&Bs and there are plenty. Look up as you walk around. Just beautiful.

first visit

By Liz B |

Easily walked and if you take a bus tour first you can get oriented. The bus tour maps are confusing though.

Historic Savannah

By lithlith |

What a fun city!! The historic area of Savannah is super cute! Well worth your time to wander around, have dinner, have a drink, or just enjoy it as is. You'll also get some great photos along the way.

Beautiful architecture and lovely places to eat

By Archie |

We enjoyed walking around and window shopping. Enjoyed the architecture and beautiful cypress trees. You can do a self guided tour. There are small restaurants along the way with delicious diverse foods.

Don’t Miss This Area When Visiting Savannah

By Bill L |

You have to walk a bit to see a number of the squares, but the large trees, flowers and historic homes are a sight to see. There is a large park in the area with some historic monuments which is a worthwhile see as well, so we suggest that you park by the park and explore the various squares from there.

Smelly homeless everywhere

By jeannie A |

The Historic District of Savannah, GA is over run with homeless people. For the beauty of the Historic squares, there are benches with odiferous, sleeping people surrounded by garbage. For the beautiful fountains in the squares, there are homeless people bathing and laundering clothes. Walking along sidewalks, there are homeless camped in business (or former business) alcoves yelling at passersby, or begging. Savanah no longer feels safe in the daytime. The city of Savannah needs to make serious changes to their public area policies.

Beautiful town

By cohoman |

I love the way the original founder of this town laid out the grid pattern of streets, squares, home blocks, etc. Makes for a beauty town. Lots of statues and landmarks everywhere. Many, many restaurants and shops in the district too.

Savannah Georgia is a must see

By Jackie R |

Savannah Georgia is the most beautiful city. The historic district is a must see. We’ve travelled a lot This is the prettiest city by far.

Great Area

By mikeandbetty7 |

Savannah Historic District is just a beautiful and exciting area in which to walk, eat, shop and relax. Anytime is a good time, but we found our stay in January was better due to fewer crowds and yet plenty to do. Our only issue is the homeless situation. You can count on getting hit up anywhere in the historic district, but especially along River Street or Forsyth Park. And do not walk through the parks after dark as many of them fill up with the homeless sleeping. Most will ask for a handout and if you say no, they walk away. Unfortunately, one guy in Forsyth Park would not leave us alone. He kept talking to us after we said hello and were walking away. The same guy was yelling at us as we walked back through the park to leave. He kept yelling and trying to stop us. After getting fed up with his yelling, I yelled back at him and told him to leave us alone. He kept talking so I turned around and walked back toward him telling him to get away from us, which he finally did. It is sad that this type activity can ruin a beautiful area and a good time. Other than typical daily issues like this, we have always enjoyed being in Savannah and look forward to many more visits. Just wish something could be done to keep the homeless from harassing visitors.

Beautiful home….a must see!

By sablinc99 |

This was such a beautiful home and so worth stopping! We really enjoyed the walk to see this beautiful home. The neighborhood was adorable and we absolutely loved the architecture of this Savannah home. What a gem!

Experience the Beauty of Savannah's Historic District

By Mixa's Travels |

Strolling the squares of Savannah is awesome to just see the beautiful homes and buildings. Each of Savannah's Squares presents its own beauty. We always enjoy a walk on Bull Street from Bay Street to Gaston Street. On this walk we pass Johnson Square, Wright Square, Chippewa Square that Forest Gump made famous, Madison Square, Monterey Square with Bull Street ending at the magnificent 30-acre Forsyth Park. The streets around Forsyth Park also have some beautiful homes and architecture especially along Gaston St. and Whitaker St. There is so much to see in Savannah's Historic District. The massive mansion on the corner of Bull Street and Gaston Street was the home of the Lawyer in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. We recommend the "Free Walking Tour" to get a sense of the Historic area of Savannah and the Hop On and Hop Off Trolley to see and learn about Savannah's Historic District.

Love visiting here

By Stephanie R |

Trolley tours, walking tours, sight seeing, haunted tours and just plain learning about the history is so interesting.

Charming town

By Rita B |

I took multiple tours of the historic district as well as explored independently. It’s very charming and largely preserved which is very cool.

Historic charm filled with beautiful old homes and squares

By Sue L |

We have been to Savannah several times over the years and each visit it is more beautiful than previous. The historic district is absolutely beautiful...so many old homes, park squares, statues, the iron work, absolutely stunning. Planning another trip down the road to spend more time but oh my....it is absolutely incredible.

Beautiful!

By William W |

The entire area is beautiful. Lots of lovely antebellum homes and historic churches. Lots of lovely squares, some with daytime activities, all a place to relax and enjoy the scenery. Put Savannah on your Bucket List. Our only complaint is the lack of street parking and parking lots in general. You can catch a tour bus or rent a bike during the day but you're on your own at night except for carriage rentals.

Wonderful historic place

By Eyekaytoo |

Having received helpful tips from the Savannah Visitors Center (sic) on a walking tour around the Historic District, my son & I strode off to see as much as possible. We were intrigued by the number of little parks (more like squares and originally 24 of them). They formed the basis of the original town planning by the founder, the Englishman, James Edward Oglethorpe. As we walked on we were struck by the many mature trees providing welcome shade, many of which were draped in that southern style, grey Spanish moss. By the way, it's not a moss, rather being an epiphytic flowering plant and it doesn't come from Spain. Oh well...

We were there on a late afternoon in May. There weren't too many people around. As we walked mainly through the little parks/squares we didn't really focus on the architecture which was our mistake. I appreciated the fact that there were many park benches to sit down on, rest and do some serious people watching.

In the Chippewa Square where there is an impressive bronze statue of the founder himself, the aforementioned James Edward Oglethorpe. And, in the same square, you can pretend to be Forrest Gump in the movie where, at the beginning, he captures a feather and eats a box of chocolates.

We really didn't have so much time to do a full reconnaissance of the place but we gained enough of an impression to say that we loved the place. You should come and see for yourself!

Wonderful Historical Area in Beautiful Setring

By TeamTex |

The Savannah Historical area was a highlight of our trip to Savannah. We took a tour and walked around to see the squares. The Cathedral was worth seeing also. The grounds are beautiful and the city does a great job keeping them looking good.

Not great

By Annie M |

This is the second time we went. First time just for an afternoon. This time we did the overview hop on bus. It was moderately interesting with a little history. We would often be talking about a building and we were already by it. Not really a picture taking kinda tour. Lots of construction. No parking. And when there was.. had to use internet which we can’t afford when in the states. And we needed ID to have a beer with our lunch (67 years old) because of some lame idea going out drunk onto street and they would get sued. The shrimp factory employee was a jerk about it. Unfortunately we didn’t pick up a good vibe there… Savannah has lost its uniqueness

Hop on Hop off tour

By James B |

It gives a overall view of the historical areas. Saves a person trying to figure out where certain locations are within the districts.

Try Charlestown

By Stephen C A |

Parking was impossible! Weather insufferablely hot and not much to see in riverside area but t shirt shops. Museum has no mention of slavery, just refers to black labor.

Beautiful city with lovely squares and historic houses.

By Mesdmd |

We have been to Savannah before but wanted to stay in the Historic district so we could walk the area. We took the hop on hop off trolley to see which historical homes to visit. Savannah is a beautiful city with great restaurants. We visit Hilton Head often but wanted to spend a few days just in Savannah.

not what we expected

By Patrick A |

We have traveled across the US and always enjoy visiting the historic district in most cities & towns. The one in Savannah was disappointing and aside from nice older homes at the various squares there was not much to enjoy. We went to the visitor center to get a detailed map and were shown how the historic area is 1 miles by 1 mile.

Sadly sad

By FuzzyCouple |

What should be a trip to a lovely historic city unfortunately was significantly lessened by the smell of the paper plant on the northwest side of the city on the Savannah River. It was pervasive, even into our hotel and restaurants. The other fly in the ointment was the drinking culture there; for the most part the bars offer large drinks using cheap alcohol and there are signs of drunkenness everywhere in the evenings, both inside and out. If these two things don't bother you then architecture and the excellent documentation of the many historic sites should provide you with a good time. There are also many wonderful people here.

Take a tour!!!

Driving around the historic district without a map or any guidance is a bust! We luckily saw some pretty neighborhoods, but next time I’d take a tour of some kind… but the beignets at Huey’s more than made up for our disappointment!!!

Always beautiful

My wife and I visited historic Savannah the week before Christmas. We have not been to Savannah in 12 years and it's still a beautiful and exciting place to be. I may be wrong, but it seemed that there were less Christmas decorations on the various houses in the historical district than in the previous years that we were there. Needless to say it's still the place to be!
