A MUST SEE!

By Kate M |

What a gorgeous highway! Truly no words, but something everyone should experience. The small added extra time from Moab to HWY 70 is well worth it.

By 10Griswald01 |

I never would have thought a highway would make the reviews, but good thing it did.

I was mapping out our trip to Moab from Chicago and noticed this road that went from 70 all the way into Moab. Google maps was taking us around, but I thought it would be nice to follow the river. As we were going through some national parks along the way, the ranger was even telling us about it. The views were spectacular and give you a while different perspective driving in the canyons.

If you are planning your route, don't leave this out.

good to drive thru' with some beautiful scenery

By ELKW |

we go to Moab from Northeast side, so will drive thru' this scenic byway, it's along the Colorado river, I see a number of people cycling here, there is bicycle lane, but not all along t he scenic drive, so for some portions, you need to use the same road as vehicles if you ride on bike. I think the most spectacular and amazing view is the red rock with a snow mountain view at the back, a contrast of hot and cold, red and white, dry and wet. (you can see the photo I took), I think that red rock in my photo is more beautiful than the Parriott mesa one. We came there in mid-June, still can see the snowy mountain, it's good.

Gorgeous drive through the canyons

By Kelsey |

Definitely add this to the list. Quiet drive. Gorgeous views. Recommend the hike near the entrance at Grandstaff Canyon. Partly shaded but better early in the morning.

Spectacular drive!

By roadtrip_ken_2017 |

With so many other attractions in the Moab area, Highway 128 can be overlooked but in many ways it's just as spectacular as anything else in the area. Fisher Towers, Castle Valley, and following winding canyons along the Colorado River make this fairly short and easy drive one that's not to be missed. There's even a small winery to visit along the way! Along with Highway 12 from Bryce to Capitol Reef, this is one of tne of the most scenic drives in Utah.

Breathtaking!

I got on scenic 128 at Cisco Utah and drove
it to Moab Utah where it ends! Amazing views
untouched by civilization!

Back road to get to Moab from I-70

By Saffron |

We were on our way from Grand Junction, Colorado to Moab to see the two National Parks in the area. Because I read a forum shortly before we left, I discovered this gorgeous back road to get to Moab. Loved it!

Not to Be Missed!

By Trek-Always |

This is a wonderful road -- the whole length that runs about 60 miles from Moab to Cisco.

Canyon after canyon. Many viewpoints or pull-offs. Enthralling road.

If this review is helpful then please indicate so below.

Highly recommended

Amazing views along the route. Drove it from Moab to the end. The first half to three quarters of it was amazing. Right beside the river and in the middle of the canyon. Plenty of pull offs.

What an amazing drive… following the flow of the Colorado River!

By Michael V |

We just returned from an awesome family vacation in and around Wyoming, Utah and Colorado.

After dinner in Park City, UT, we talked with a couple at the hotel who had just visited Moab. They recommended visiting Arches National Park and places to see the sunset… they shared that there is a road that was on the north side of town, near the Colorado River. I went back to the room and checked it out.

That road is Highway 128.

So I planned the sunset viewing for at least my wife and me. After we got to Moab, I took a few minutes to drive east on Hw 128, and did see several places to see the sunset, including the one the couple mentioned. And… I looked at the map.

We intended to drive from Moab to Vail by driving back in the way we arrived… Hw 191 north back to I-70… two sides of a triangle. And then the map showed the third side of the triangle, the hypotenuse that is Highway 128. While the drive time means that the shortest way to Colorado may take a few more minutes, the view is spectacular, and sooooo worth it.

The road parallels the Colorado River… sometimes rising above it, sometimes with a ranch or two between you and the water, but it parallels the river through a canyon… you’re almost floating the, except you’re in a car, on asphalt… but you almost get the same effect of actually being on the water… the views, spectacular.

And near the end, near I-70, you can see the Dewey bridge, a wooden suspension bridge, which apparently used to carry car traffic before the current bridge was built… sadly the bridge was damaged in a fire and hasn’t been replaced yet.

As you get closer to I-70, you’ll pass Cisco. Cisco, CO was an abandoned town.... buildings were standing and falling down, with "No Trespassing" spray painted on them... it was a little sad.

If you’re in Moab, we recommend it.
Drive time’s ~ 45 minutes each way… more if you understandably stop along the way.

Beautiful!

By NEtraveler707 |

We drove this road from south to north in the early morning. Much of it is in a narrow canyon, with the Colorado River and the back of Arches National Park on one side. The colors of the rock faces and vegetation are breathtaking!
We used this as an alternative to the normal highways as part of our drive to Denver to catch a flight. The road is well paved, and although it looks like a tiny line on the map, it really does work fine as a through route (in warm weather)!

Drive to Arches National Park

This road follows the Colorado river on the way to Moab. Very scenic drive through beautiful landscapes. Highly recommended!

Best kept secret off the beaten path

By Rickeys-Travels |

As we know, you can't see America from the interstate, we took highway 128 into Moab from I-70. Little did we know what was in store for us. As we started driving south on Hwy 128 we are greeted by an mangy pronghorn staring at us as if we are entering a "B" rated horror movie. Feeling like this would be just another bypass, we didn't know what was in store for us. We started out driving through the desert and passed a few farms as we drove south. Around 10 miles you start seeing bluffs on the horizon and when you pass the cross over the bridge and Colorado River the scenery drastically changes. Our jaws drop in awe as the highway parallels the river with majestic mountains on both sides. Driving through this valley, there are recreation areas along the river. Kayakers and paddle boarders wave as you drive by. This is one of the most scenic drives we have ever been on. Feels like we were in a National Park, and it's FREE. Bypasses like this give a better impression of what America is all about. Go out and see the "Real America"

Great drive alongside the Colorado River

By Kemper_Forbes |

Went for a drive for a few miles along this route on the recommendation of a Moab resident. Very glad we did. And if you have time, maybe do the La Sal Loop Road. We started it but had to turn back as time did not permit - you'll need about 3 hours.

Stunning drive - must do it

By Chiefly1 |

This scenic drive is really one of those beautiful drives that you need to experience. Bring your camera! You will not be disappointed.

We drove the byway twice we loved it so much!

By Kay H |

We were driving from Grand Junction and decided to take Highway 128 to Moab. We loved the ride so much, when it was time to leave Moab, we decided to take Highway 128 back. It does take a little longer than the freeway route, but worth it! The scenery is gorgeous, the ride laid back, and did I say the scenery was gorgeous? Take the time to take this route!

A great drive along the Colorado River.

By Wanderlust5678 |

We really enjoyed this scenic drive. It travels right beside the Colorado River. We drove it from I-70 into Moad and think the river views are best driving that direction.

Scenic Byway Utah Highway 128 - The River Road - most definitely worth the drive, the scenery is stunning !!!

By LANCE O |

Scenic Byway Utah Highway 128 is totally the route to take if you are making your way to Moab and Arches National Park, or if you have completed your Arches trip and are journeying back toward the east and into Colorado.

Definitely take Highway 128...!!! The scenery is incredibly beautiful, the road is lightly travelled so you can relax and enjoy the ride. And for most of the route, the Colorado River parallels the roadway...yep, that Colorado River...the one that made the Grand Canyon. So beautiful scenery is guaranteed !!!

There was a reason that many good ol' western movies were filmed in the surrounding countryside...and you will soon realize why.

Do it...plan about 1 to 2 hours of soothing satisfaction...you won't be disappointed.

Seriously beautiful

By Christy K |

The crazy thing about driving down this byway is the feeling that you've been there a million times... the stunning geology of Utah has been the backdrop to so many Westerns that this drive feels familiar at every turn. This road is the ultimate appetizer on the way to the main course of Arches National Park. Seriously cannot recommend enough.

Splash in the Waters That Carve the Grand Canyon

Scenic Byway of Highway 128
Utah
Splash in the Colorado River
517049373
We've visited the headwaters of the Colorado River and seen the masterful work it did in carving the Grand Canyon. Getting to drive along beside it in Utah (with no other cars on the road), pull over at great picture spots, and even walk into the river to splash around was a really amazing. I don't think we'll take Highway 191 in and out of the Arches & Moab areas ever again. Scenic byway 128 is paved, devoid of traffic and bursting with scenery at every turn. Next time, we'll leave time for a stop at one of the two resorts on the road for a glass of wine or meal by the river. We also saw lots of people rafting and SU Paddleboarding on sections of the river. We might check out outfitters to do one of those. SUP on the Colarado River? That sounds (and looked) amazing. Even if you only have time for the drive, I highly recommend it. It's as good (if not better) than the inner loop through Badlands. It might be better because there's substantially less traffic on this route. The only road that comes close to this one is Hwy 12 in and out of Boulder and Escalante in Utah. Don't miss the chance to get up close and personal with one of the greatest rivers in the world.

TIPS:
1. Have a half to full tank and empty bladders. While the road is only 44.5 miles long, you may find yourself driving slowly and pulling over to stop a lot. There are NO SERVICES on this road. Not service stations or bathrooms or anything (just the two lodges that are closer to 191 Arches/Moab than I-70.
2. I would enter/exit from the Western spur of 128 that intersects with I-70 (exit 204) not the eastern (exit 214). The eastern spur is more of a frontage road (no scenery) and is pretty rough. Keep up your speed and comfort on I-70 until you reach the western access to 128 at exit 204. Even though we were coming from the Northeast, Waze directed us to go past exit 214 to the western access (at 204) and we were grateful for this "misdirection." We concur with the Waze routing, after exploring a bit of the eastern sections of 128 (they really don't add anything and will cut into your time on the scenic parts of the drive).
3. Pull up the online details of the road and read them as you go -- knowing to look for the burned-out suspension bridge (and the story behind its destruction) made the ride even more interesting. Discovermoab-dot-com has a good mile-by-mile description of the drive so you're sure to stop and catch all the major sites on the way.
4. Stop at one of the two lodges with restaurants on the road. They're both closer to Moab than I-70. The pictures show great river views. It was late in the afternoon for us and I didn't want to spoil dinner. Next trip, we'll time the drive for lunch so we can stop and enjoy a relaxing lunch on the banks of the Colorado.
5. I love daring and deserted drives more than average person. This, however, is not a road I would drive after dark. There are no structures or other cars or lights to help guide your way in the dark. Multiple cattle guards make me think free-range cattle and other wildlife would be a serious impediment to safe after-dark driving on this road. No cell signal and no services would also turn me off visiting this road at night. Plus, what's the point? It's the views that make this road spectacular. Safe driving!

Just awesome

By Carla B |

We took the Scenic Byway from Moab to Denver. So much beauty to see and many places to stop for a nice picture.
You can tell a lot about it, but it is definitely worth your time and enjoy the beauty of nature and the Colorado River, the ranches, the red rocks. Just Amazing.

Amazing drive early in the morning is best

By Pixtonian |

We headed out to climb at 6 AM so it was still dark when we started down this road. It was beautiful and there was so much to see. This is for sure a drive that if you are in the area you should make.

The Colorado River Up Close and Personal!!!!!

By Loretta F |

If you have stood at the rim of the Grand Canyon and looked down at the Colorado very far below and wondered how it would feel to be down there.....well you can by driving from Fruita, CO to Moab, UT on Route 128..What a beautiful experience!!!!

More beautiful views of the Colorado River

By Taylor B |

After a while, a weary traveler in southeastern Utah begins to wonder if the number of scenic highways and overlooks and vistas will ever run out. How many of them are there? Do I have time to experience all of them? One that shouldn't be missed is the Scenic Byway of Highway 128, known to locals of Moab, Utah, as the River Road. It is one of the most interesting and breath-taking drives imaginable. It follows through canyons carved and inhabited by the Colorado River and features towering mesas and awesome rock formations, beautifully manicured ranch resorts, natural springs and countless amounts of red rock. Start your drive with a stop at Matrimony Spring, a natural spring where many tourists have stopped for years to fill up their bottles or to simply enjoy seeing the fresh water gush from the rockside; continue up the windy road for eight miles to Big Bend Campground, where you can sit beside the river and enjoy the beautiful red rock landscape; further up the road at Mile 14, the tight canyon walls will open up and Red Cliffs Lodge sits majestically in the open valley. It offers horseback riding tours, free movie museum, an award-winning winery and delicious meals; after lunch and wine tasting, continue to Mile 21 where a right turn off Highway 128 takes you to Fisher Towers, a popular hiking area; back on Highway 128, travel up to Mile 23, the Hittle Bottom Campground, another great opportunity to sit beside the river and take pictures of the rocky landscape; at this point, you can either continue up the highway to the junction of I-70 or turn around and return to Moab. Either way, you'll see magnificent scenery that you've never seen before.

Breath-taking views of the Colorado River

By Jeanetha W |

We were driving west (from Denver) to Moab. When you first get off of Interstate 70 the first eight miles are rough and a bit narrow for a two lane, we had second thoughts about continuing. But when we really got on UT 128 it was a much better paved and marked two lane road. Once you start paralleling the river we must have stopped 10 times to take pictures and enjoy the stunning landscape. It is not just the very wide and churning Colorado river (and we were traveling in late September, so less run off from snow melt), but the canyon and bluffs were just breath-taking at almost every turn.
We saw about two dozen deer, too. (One of them very close to the road, and he was undecided about crossing in front of us.) So be alert and ready to stop.
Also you will pass many state park camping spots that might make you want to come back for a longer visit.

NOT WORTH SAVING 15 MINUTES TO TAKE 191

By ExRIGuy |

If coming from or going to Colorado on I70 do not miss this road it is beautiful and far more scenic than 191 with numerous beautiful ranches, side routes you could take if you wanted and of course superb views. It adds maybe 15 minutes to trip.

Most beautiful drive in the US

By TravelerfromOZ |

This is a gorgeous route. Do not miss it. The road is excellent. You feel as though you are driving through the Grand Canyon and you are right next to the Colorado River with huge cliff walls going up on either side of the rive.

Simply stunning

By Darren C |

Some of the views on this road are quite stunning. Definitely worth a trip if heading towards Moab. Just try to watch the road....

Beautiful Drive

By Robin H |

We started at Moab and the drive took us about 1 1/2 hours. This is one of the best scenic byways we've been on. The road was good and had several pull outs. Not as twisty as others make it out to be. Definitely worth the drive!

Jaw dropping beauty, but do it on the way back

By TR182Flyer |

Most folks take this drive from Grand Junction to Moab. We did it the other direction and it really was amazing. This canyon is something that inspires poets and painters and the light coming through the Colorado River canyon walls is just amazing. From the Moab side, you'll get 45+ mins of incredible splendor with the remaining part of the drive just the Western Colorado desert so it's a nice transition back to reality going this way. Don't miss it either way you go.

a forgotten jewel

By idesbald d |

This scenic utah byway (45 miles), just north of moab on the 191 to I -70 (to the east) is one of The most forgotten beautie of the Moab area ? Maybe it is, it's certainly a beauty.
We choose to take this road very early on the way to Colorado National Monument NP.Almost immediately the road enters the gorge of the Colorado river. High sandstone walls are rising up everywhere and this for more than 30 miles, passing Castle Valley . This great decor persists until some miles behind the Dewey bridge.
Despite our early start (7.30 am) we could take a lot of splendid pictures and have many stops. It's seems to be a road with little trafic;
Enjoy this piece of beautiful nature.
duration : 2 hours maximum one way, stops included

Another awesome scenic route

By z28commero |

This is an awesome scenic byway on the way in our out of Moab, UT. Running along the Colorado river, there are too many breathtaking views to mention. Take your time, pull over occasionally and enjoy God's wondrous creation!

And we just thought it would be a short cut to Moab

By Joe C |

We figured the time was the same as driving the interstate so we chose scenic. That is an understatement, this drive was fantastic with beautiful sights around every bend as it hugged the Colorado River. Occasionally there were side canyons with far reaching views of mesas in the distance. It is a great drive even if it isn't taking your planned direction.

Amazing drive

By Ed B |

My only complaint was I did it too late in the day. I'll make sure that I'll do it again I'll try to catch it earlier. By the time I got to Moab it was dark. The colors were awesome even at dusk. Pay attention to the road. Some pretty dangerous corners, esp if it was more crowded.

Majestic! Takes your breathe away.

By D L |

This scenic byway is really beautiful. The rock formations, the narrow canyons, the lighting, and the river all make for ooh's and aah's around every corner.

Take this road!!!

By Jen M |

This is one of the most beautiful drives I have ever been on in the U.S. We were driving from Grand Junction CO to Moab, and I saw the tip online to take this route. It is absolutely gorgeous scenery, with many little areas to pull off and stop and look or have a picnic (even with restrooms!) Even if you don't have a ton of time, it doesn't add much time to the total length of trip. Well worth it!

Don't miss this drive!

By SJANE11 |

Absolutely breathtaking drive through the canyons along the Colorado River. We saw some online posts talking about the drive to Moab taking Hwy 128 instead of continuing on I-70. Definitely worth the extra time spent following the scenic route. Each turn was gorgeous. This is now one of my favorite drives on earth!

Great choice to drive 128 vs 191

By FYL003 |

It was a last minute decision to use this route instead of 191 when leaving Moab towards Vail. We left on a Wednesday morning and there was not much traffic on this road. The sun was up and was shining on the the cliff face. The sight of the sheer height of the cliff on both sides of the road which winds along the river was magical. There are pullouts along the way for photos. Watch out for cattle crossing after 2/3 of the way.

Magnificent drive

By Miller1647 |

After reading on here that we should take this "alternate route" to Moab and the Arches, we decided to try it. We are so glad we did. It is such a scenic drive. We only wish we could have taken longer to see more of it.

Don't miss it - this is so beaatiful, peasful , spectacular road.

Don't miss it - this is so beaatiful, peasful , spectacular road.
We took it on the way from Moab to Denver.
I

Don't miss!!

By BluesTraveler52 |

The scenery/landscape is beautiful and dramatic. The byway follows the Colorado River with views of deep canyons and bluffs that reach to the sky. The colors are magnificent. This was our second time driving to Moab via this scenic by way. Highly recommend!

Amazing!

By Bernard H |

A truly incredible scenic route! A must-have!
Numerous campsites all along
Trails, rafting, superb cycle path...many activities possible if you stay several days!

Worth the time

By digbyhughes |

This drive lives up to all the hype - there is a photo opportunity around every corner. Take your time - stop a lot and enjoy!

One of the prettiest drives in the USA!

By Mimi F |

This is the most scenic drive along the Colorado River anywhere and one of the most scenic in the nation! The desert reds, the greens of vegetation against the river and the dramatic landscape make this drive awe inspiring and you can see so much from your car! I recommend taking a diversion and hiking Fisher Towers for a memorable and remarkable hike!

Beautiful

By pabrandon |

Great ride, especially being from the east. Every time we start driving we pull over again for a picture. What you want to see when you explore the west.

By 74JAB |

Coming from Colorado going to Nevada had some time to kill to go see the arches. Decided to take 128 byway. It was a good choice the first few miles was questionable but after that it was really worth the extra time to go through there. Be advised, the roads do get narrow and there is other traffic and pedestrians. Multiple campgrounds fishing areas and rafting sites

Beautiful drive

By Dan S |

One of the best drives in the world. Pay attention to the road as it can get very narrow. New pavement the entire drive

One of the best well worth the extra time

By DrikusJ |

This highway was one of the best I driven in the USA. Well worth the extra time. Take your breakfast / lunch to go and stop during the route to enjoy the scenery

Great Byway into Moab

By Foodange |

We took the long route round to Moab and came down this fabulous road.
We started by driving to Cisco to see the abandoned town, though it did look like there were a few folk still there.
After a while the road follows the Colorado River and it’s superb. We admired Fisher Towers, stopped at Sorrel River Ranch then at Ida Gulch. Here we saw the canoes, rafts and other craft leaving and departing on the river

Our start of an amazing vacation

By tyspritey |

We had a National Park/State Park Utah/Arizona road trip before us. Flew into Grand Junction CO. After the long line at the rental car desk and getting luggage, we were on our way to Moab, Utah around 5:00. We decided to go the "long" way and take Hwy. 128. What a great decision. Yes, it is a 2-lane back road. But, you will not see scenery like this off of the highway. As you get closer to Moab, the scenery becomes more jaw dropping. I was so glad we made the decision to go this route. It is easy to access, and takes you right to Moab.

Breathtaking drive

By MyOwnBrandOfCrazy |

If I was only able to do one thing while in Moab, I would choose to take this drive. The views are just breathtaking. When you turn onto 128 in Moab, you are immediately surrounded by towering red rock. The road follows the Colorado River through cliffs and canyons for the first 18 or so miles. Castle Rock and Fisher Towers are both amazing rock formations not to be missed. If you look closely, you might see some brave rock climbers scaling these beautiful formations. 128 opens up to fields with views of the La Sal mountains if you take the whole route. Bring your camera and be prepared to stop often to take pictures of the changing scenery. It would be best in morning or afternoon light, as the mid day sun would be harsh and you would miss the amazing colors. Do not miss this drive - you will not be disappointed!

Beautiful scenic route from Moab to I-70

By roadtrip_ken_2017 |

This two-lane highway that runs from just north of Moab to I-70 is one of the most scenic drives you'll find in Utah. The northern part closest to I-70 isn't particularly interesting but from a few miles south of that all the way to the Colorado River bridge near Moab the road runs through spectacular red rock scenery, much of it right through the river canyon. With that, plus views of the Fisher Towers and Castle Valley, as well as glimpses of the often snow-covered La Sal Mountains, it's a gorgeous drive. You'll want to pull over often for photos, but note that most of the pullouts from the road are on the west side so if you're traveling north from Moab that makes it a bit more difficult but you can still use those pullouts if you're careful. Highly recommended alternate route to Highway 191 from Moab to I-70 if you have a little extra time to enjoy the scenery.

If you are going from Grand Junction to Moab please go this way ....

By sj48 |

We had rubbish weather coming into Utah from Grand Junction so decided to take the I-70 and US-191. This was possibly the most desolate (in the negative sense) drive of the whole trip, and it was only the last 10 miles as you come close to Moab that there is anything worth seeing. We had an hour to kill one evening in Moab so thought we'd have a quick peek at the 128 - wow; this is a stunning drive and 100 times more interesting and scenic than the I-70 and I don't think it is even much slower in total. It's a really good quality road so if the weather is half-decent, this is the only sensible route to take. There were some roadworks for the first few miles out of Moab that slowed things down, but they are probably sorted already.

Spectacular Red Cliffs Rise High Above the Highway

By rusticpress |

Highway 128 runs 44 miles from US-191 on the west, just north of Moab, Utah, to Interstate 70 on the east. It tracks the Colorado River through a deep gorge with steep walls of red sandstone. Residents of Moab call it “the river road” and the first 20 miles are incredibly scenic. The soaring red cliffs are breathtaking. Campgrounds and boat docks are located along the road in an area called Big Bend and the road narrows in places with blind corners and no shoulders.

You’d think the Grand Canyon would be enough of a creation for any one river, but the Colorado leaves an indelible mark wherever it flows. On this trip, I started at the source of the river in the Rockies and followed it to Page, Arizona by way of Moab, Utah. The landscape around the river has always been jaw-droppingly spectacular, highway 128 being but one example.

OFF the beaten path .. & worth it.

By JamaisVu |

When heading to Moab (or Arches, Canyonlands etc) from the east on I-70, CO Hwy 128 is a shorter route in MILES than US Hwy 191 via Crescent Junction. It's not quite 50 miles from the dead town of Cisco to Moab. But you will not reach your destination more quickly this way. Partly because it's a small two-lane with twists & hills etc. Partly, also, because it's diverse, interesting & beautiful as it winds along the CO River. You'll want to drive slowly (pull over to take pictures!), perhaps take a couple detours (Castle Valley, for example). The road passes thru canyons & opens out onto lovely, flat bottomlands. The river is wide, slow & beautiful here, the canyons & spires are gorgeous.

There are a couple dude-ranch-type resorts along the way, & several small campgrounds (no hookups), as well as river put-in & take-out areas with parking. Unless you stop at one of the resort restaurants, there's no food or stores alone the way. During The Season, there will be a LOT of traffic ~ sightseers, rafters, hikers, bikers, group rallies etc. So be patient, pull over, & enjoy the ride.

One of the GREAT Drives of the American West

By CarolDM1900 |

We've driven this incredible 45-mile route between Cisco and Moab 3 times, including on a Harley, and we'll be back again and again until we're no longer able to drive. It is just THAT GOOD.

The pictures speak for themselves, but here is a little more to whet your appetite.

First, there's the interesting HISTORY. Long ago, the section between Castle Valley and Moab was a trail called the Heavenly Stairway, for its dramatic changes in elevation. Other trails with years of use by people and pack animals were nearby, but there was nothing approaching a road until the early part of the 20th century. It took decades, with many upgrades and extensions, to create what you see today: one of the country's most spectacular roadways, winding through steep gorges that -- like impressionist paintings by Claude Monet -- seem to change color minute by minute, according to all the subtleties of light as it moves from sunrise to sunset.

Second, there's the splendid feeling of ISOLATION. Even though the route was linked via a short extension to I-70 back in the early 1970s, it has retained its rugged, natural character, making it seem a world away from what we think of as "civilization." It is still largely non-commercial. The two enterprises located there -- Red Cliffs Lodge and Winery at Mile Post 14 and the Sorrel River Ranch Resort and Spa nearby at Mile Post 17 -- blend well with nature. They offer hiking, biking, horseback riding, and rafting: activities relatively gentle on the environment. There's a BLM campground and Arches National Park along the route, and that is basically IT until Moab. It's not wilderness, and yet it feels wild, in a primordial, red-rock, blue-sky kind of way.

3. Third, there are the AMENITIES. You'll find many turnouts, including some with river access, that will bring you away from the road and closer to nature. You can stop to take a walk, stick your feet in the water at the river's edge (don't venture further, due to dangerous currents), enjoy a picnic or just take some spectacular photographs. If you're hungry or thirsty, both the lodges have restaurants. You can rent a horse for a trail ride or sample other activities on a space-available basis. At Red Cliffs, there's wine-tasting and a museum that tells the history of movie making in this area, popular for Westerns starring people like John Wayne. With plenty to see and do, you can take your time. If you're lucky, you'll be there to catch both the early morning and the evening colors in the canyons.

TO SUM UP: This is a spectacular route, with plenty to enjoy beyond those 45 miles of pavement. If you are anywhere in Utah's canyon lands, don't miss the opportunity to experience this great "All-American Road." With Route 66, it belongs on your bucket list of great drives.

Among the best Scenic Byways in the US

By donbauer |

There a very few roads in the US that take your breath away, not because it's scary, but solely for its surrounding natural beauty. This is one.

If you're a camper, it's a must. There are 3 or 4 campgrounds along the Colorado River, each with unique views and great services, not to mention the fishing, rafting, trails, and wildlife.

Campers beware!

By Douglas R |

The shapes and colors of the rocks are fantastic. Had I had time to hike, I'm sure the hiking and biking would have been teriffic. I've rafted the river along this stretch and had a great time. Camping is plentiful and the pit toilets descent but I went over spring break and every camp site in every campground was taken. Campers beware! the $10/night is reasonable.

Views are spectacular!

By Vacationer261962 |

Recommend to anyone who drives from Denver to Arches National Park take this Byway. Views are spectacular. It is like the Arches National Park itself, you can see some arches in the distance.

Road Less Traveled

By dbphelps |

This is an alternate and beautiful drive coming or leaving Moab from I-70. You can access UT-128 from either Exit 204 or 214 off I-70, depending on the direction you are heading. After driving a few miles off I-70 you will eventually catch up with the Colorado River. The road hugs with river into a spectacular canyon where the red rock walls jut up from the water. There are plenty of recreational areas for hiking, bike riding, camping, ranching etc. along the way. As other reviewers have stated it really rivals anything you will see in the National or State parks surrounding Moab. I would highly recommend the drive if you coming or going to Moab. Of course if you are more inclined to outdoor activities, you should probably check out some of the trails and sites to camp.

Lovely drive

By Diane K |

Our hotel was located off of this highway so we traveled this scenic route many times. There is something beautiful you look at anywhere you look.

The MOST amazing route to Moab

By Jack W |

This is the MOST amazing way to get to Moab. The scenery is stunning---and rivals many of the views in the nearby national parks. If you are coming from Denver, it is easy to access and has many places to stop and explore. The Colorado River is beautiful--and full of rafters and kayakers at this time of year. My only complaint---speed limit is 45 for the most part. If you're in a hurry, PLEASE don't use this road. It is curvy and narrow---and perfect for those wanting to take in the scenery---not for crazy people in a hurry.

Scenic Byway 128 in Moab, Utah

By raftingbug |

This drive is breathtaking...around every turn is new scenery as it follows the Colorado River. It is like being in a "mini Grand Canyon" We took a video out of our sunroof with our tablet so we can share with family and friends...highly reccomend this drive off I 70 into or out of Moab!!!

Beautiful Drive

By Tracy166 |

We drove the 44 miles of the Scenic Byway 128 Highway from Grand Junction, Colorado on the way to Moab and it was quite spectacular, especially near the Moab end. The byway parallels the Colorado river passing the old Dewey Bridge, Fisher Towers, Castle Valley, Professor Valley and Big Bend. It is quite a lovely drive and much better than just driving on the Interstate.

Unbelievable beauty and not even an official park!

By Christian V |

Absolutely worth the drive. I couldn't believe that this was not a national park. You can stop and swim at own risk in the Colorado river. Current is quite strong so chose a place where you can safely get out downstream or stay in the shallow. Water temperature great in the summer. Also a lot of rafting in the area. Lots of beautiful dry campgrounds on the river banks. Castle creek winery and lodge is a gem halfway thru.
Definitely recommend - you won't regret it.

Great for scenery and adventure

By matthew t |

This scenic bypass is an easy and spectacular ride. Try a stop at Red Cliffs Lodge for lunch and then to the Fisher Towers Trail!

Stunning red rock drive!

By KarenAzinger |

If you are in Moab, definitely take the time to drive down scenic highway 128! The views are stunning! Towering red cliffs front up to the Colorado River. Keep driving till you hit Fisher Tower, a towering monolith famous in many western movies. Worth driving to the end of red rock country, then turn around and do it again. This drive is especially stunning at sunset! Stunning!

Scenic Byway U-128, magnificent, beautiful

By owl9 |

I wanted to appreciate, enjoy, taking the area without taking a tour, renting a jeep, side-by-side

Drove through downtown Moab noticed the turn off wow

I pulled over and stopped frequently to take in the scenery, take a video, but other cars go past

Today is June 26. It is definitely summer clear sunny day, 95°F not uncomfortable, but didn’t feel like hiking and was continually sipping water.

By RAW17 |

Leaving Moab toward Denver we decided to take this instead of 191. We did it without stopping and it took us only 50 minutes. The drive was beautiful and barely set us back on time at all.
If we weren't trying to get somewhere we could have doubled that time with many worthy photo stops, but even if you don't stop the scenery is worth it.

Beautiful road out of Moab to I70

By Sue Ann H |

Every time we are headed to Moab, we take this relaxing, pretty trip along the Colorado River. We had been in Canyon Country for some days and were headed home to Colorado. There is never much traffic here and it is a relaxing stroll along the ambling Colorado as it makes it way to Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon.

Beautiful road along the Colorado river

By John P |

We were travelling to Aspen from Moab and chose to use roiute 128, very scenic, very quiet road, tooks lots of photos

DO NOT GO THE QUICK ROUTE

By Lisaanddarren2213 |

Take the byway and see the majestic walls of the mountains cut out by the mighty Colorado. Stop at Fisher Towers for a look, read about the movie history of the area. There is a movie museum on the way too but we did not stop due to time constraints.

Amazing views along the Colorado!

By Jon |

If you are coming from Grand Junction or North in general, this might be worth the drive to get to Moab. Amazing views along the Colorado. Fun winding road. Cool colors in the morning and evening light.
The only downside there is construction along 10% of the road at any given time and you might have to wait for 1 way traffic. Took me about 2 hours to get from I-70 to Moab but was worth it. The new road from I-70 to about halfway down the canyon is nice.
Some reviews say there are potholes, etc. but I was on a motorcycle and had no problems.

Best route to Moab

By Tomas D |

If you are coming west on I70 this route provides a very scenic route into Moab. If you like geology the drive has very interesting formations. Search for a roadside geology narrative before heading out. A stop at Fisher Towers provides for a great hike through some amazing topology.

wonderful ride ,,,

By mcgeet |

Amazing, it was a wonderful drive, we loved it !
(we had the time to avoid the highway. this was delightful)

Sensational vistas

By dixiepeach |

We were leaving Moab/Arches National Park area and chose the scenic route. We’re so glad we did! It was a good road with incredible views as you wind along the Colorado River.

Stunning views

By Mike P |

We were traveling east from Denver to Moab and decided to take highway 128, it only added about 15 mins more to our journey, but it was worth it and then some. This road winds its way adjacent to the Colorado river and gradually gets deeper into the canyon until the walls are right up against you. Parts of it look similar to monument valley and other parts look like the Grand Canyon (so similar in fact that many films are shot here as a stand-in). This is such an easy and convenient way to see these beautiful things up close and it takes you right into Moab. Although we weren't camping, there were loads of sites along the route which I'm sure would be an amazing location to camp.

Nice, scenic drive!

By dfb260 |

Nice and very scenic drive between Moab and I -70. Near Moab you are driving by the Colorado River, which is very nice. There are places you may stop and get to the river. On the north end, stop at Buzzard’s Belly store in Cisco for a treat. No gas available on this nearly 50 mile route.

Visit to the National Parks !

By Hera B |

Excellent road even at high altitude. It is of amazing quality with its smoothness. Felt that if such road could be built even in the home country of this visitor, tons of mesmerizing things could be shared with the people of other countries.

REALLY NOT TO BE MISSED

By G6028AWkarenb |

This scenic route follows the CO River and is just a beautiful drive. You do not have to go all the way to the end if you do not want to.If you do it opens up into grasslands and then you hit the Interstate to go to Green River or you can come back to Moan on 191. If you go as far as the resort that would be a good place to turn around and come back into Rt. 191. It was a highlight of our trip and the Grand Canyon is in out back yard!!! Go figure.

Gorgeous Scenery, Easy Drive

By DGMAC |

En route from Moab to Grand Junction decided to take the scenic route and boy, we were glad we did! The winding road follows along the Colorado river and cuts through the mountainous rock formations that are just beautiful. Plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos along the way. Opens up a bit about 2/3 of the way down the highway. Eventually meets up with 70 to continue to Grand Junction if you're going that way, otherwise you can turn back and see the views in the other direction.

A must do in Moab

By Howie1524 |

Terrific views as you drive along Highway 128. Plenty of places to stop and take pictures. Drive may be better in the afternoon due to angle of the sun on the scenery. Save time to do this drive. You will not be sorry.

National Park worthy drive!

By liquidpromises |

Wonderful drive, a don't miss! You think you're driving through a National Park.
It's only a longer route because you are stopping so many times taking pictures.
You won't be disappointed.

A better way to get back to the interstate!

By logandiana |

We took 191 south to Arches National Park, but instead of backtracking we took the more scenic route back to I-70. This scenic by way goes right next to the Colorado river for most of the way and is nestled in a canyon. The route takes longer and is slower, but it's worth it for the views.

Super scenic - Great for a "chill" day in Moab

By Dave J |

After hiking quite a bit on Monday in Arches, Tuesday in Canyonlands & making a day-trip to Capitol Reef on Wednesday, we were in desperate need of a lower-key day in Moab. We had heard about the scenery on Highway 128 and got a small taste of it, during our bus ride on our way to the launch point for our whitewater rafting trip. We drive all the way up to the Hittle Bottom campground & launch before turning around & slowly making our way back south to Moab. The road parallels the Colorado River to the south & west as it heads north toward I-70. Among the sites - Castle Valley, Fisher Towers & the amazing enormous red rock walls that line the gorge that contains the highway & the river. There are plenty of pullouts along the way on both sides of the road, and the traffic volume was very light. We stopped several times to snap photos & made mental notes about things to do in Moab the next time we are in town (Fisher Towers Road & the La Sal Mountain Loop Road), both accessed off 128.

Worth the drive

By Melody K |

Beautiful views of the Colorado River and the red rocks. We were there right after a light snow and it was just beautiful. A cameraman delight with all the snow on the red rocks, frost on the trees along the river. Just amazing.

Hyway 128

This was a nice ride leaving Moab and going NE. My teenage kids didn't enjoy it like the adults did. They had enough looking at rocks when it was time to hit the road. If you have the time, I would definitely recommend going on this route.

Disney's Cars Land Come to Life

By Ernie S |

Imagine you could drive your car alongside the Colorado River as it winds its way through the Grand Canyon. That is exactly the experience you will enjoy by going off the beaten track and taking this glorious scenic drive to Moab, Utah.

I took this drive on my way to Moab, starting from I-70 westbound. At first it almost seems like a mistake, a forgotten road to nowhere. But once you reach the Colorado River, wow!

Around every corner is another remarkable vista of red rock, canyons, winding river, and Nature at its most glorious. Toward the end of the drive there are wonderful bike trails separate from the highway, so if you love to cycle this place will seem like heaven.

Must do

By lv2learn |

This stretch of road is fantastic- you can see the landscape evolve before eyes. Drive (slowly and carefully) through Cisco if you have the chance.

SR 128, Utah

By abbeysong |

Slickrock walls towering up on either side, boulders the size of trucks, and mesas and buttes of unsurpassed beauty. One of the best roads on the planet (along with Potash Road on the other side of the 191) and this one leads to Fisher Towers. But don't go, because I want it all to myself. (P.S. Stupid Trip Advisor insists that I pick a single date for my visit. I've been numerous times, but I picked May 2013 because I usually go in May.)

A Beautiful Drive!

By Grete P |

A beautiful way to get to Moab. Completely surprised by the Colorado River and how pretty it was. It looked to new paved and something beautiful to see around each turn. I had to pull over a couple of times to let local pass because I didn't want to drive fast and miss anything.

A must see!!!

By janeyhrn |

Was told about this road by woman we met in Grand Junction on way to Moab. This was by far the most beautiful road I have been on. Riding along the Colorado River for miles with all of the rock formations on both sides was just breathaking. The road is very winding and only 2 lanes but not much traffic to contend with. Many areas to pull out and take pictures. A definite must if heading to Moab from Intersate 70.

Unexpected treasure

By TBeau |

We knew our hotel had a great view of the cliffs at the south edge of Arches NP and the Colorado River -- but had no idea how beautiful the 10 minute drive from Moab would be! Would love to drive the entire length of SR-128 in the future...

Highway 128 Beautiful!

By llama |

We arrived after dark to our Lodge, but when we woke in the morning, we were like "Wow!" The road is beautiful following the river with red rocks all around you. Windy, but not scary at all. If in the area, drive this road for some amazing photos.

Mind blowing. You feel like you are in another world.

By TABeatty |

Mind blowing. Holy crap. Seriously. Even if you don’t need to head in this direction. Do it! I’m so glad we did. We were seriously blown away by how beautiful the area was. Like nothing we’ve ever experienced. Truly we went to the Grand Canyon 4 days later and it pales in comparison. Can that be true?!

Beautiful Views

By Tonyalynn1963 |

We enjoyed all the natural beauty of Utah. We traveled the scenic highway 128 from Grand Junction to Moab. I did not feel that it was dangerous at all. I would recommend traveling this route. Be sure you have plenty of gas. No service station in this area.

Gorgeous drive!

By MaryQ |

Beautiful, breath-taking vistas. It's a lovely drive with places to pull out and take hikes, or you can stay in your car and enjoy the view without hiking. Worth the time to just relax and enjoy the scenery!

So many good folks here took the time to describe this fantastic drive! I would really have nothing additional to add except to say that it's a must!

Viva Views, Vistas and Oh WOWS

Magnificent country with natural images even Disney would not be able to create. Driving along the Trail of the Ancestors, you can only imagine the lives of those who lived in this area before highways. Take the time to drive and stop during the daylight hours. Bring a picnic and take as many photos as you can. Every curve provides a visual memory!

Not to be missed

By garbagecollector |

I imagine many visitors to Arches and Canyonlands never make it on Highway 128, or they only go so far as the local winery. Too bad, because they really miss out on a fantastic drive, with colorful mountains, the Colorado River, and relatively remote scenery without crowds.

We drove on 128 all the way from the Arches area to the freeway. I think we saw maybe 10 cars the whole way, yet we loved the scenery!

A must do! Scenic to the max!

By Rob |

I 2nd all comments of all previous reviewers. This is an absolute definite must do as an alternative just taking the interstate to Moab.

A relaxing drive with gorgeous views

By mpm0024 |

Getting on route 128 is a snap. it intersects interstate191 just below Arches. We have been to Moab several times, always take this drive. The route parallels the Colorado River- you get to accompany the river as it cuts through the red rock. On this occasion we caught sunrise along with the morning mist on the river.

Beautiful drive

Beautiful drive along the Colorado river. This road winds along the canyon walls along the Colorado river with stunning views.

Rte 128

By Monica B |

Thank you so much for the tip!! It was wonderful. The extra time was well worth it - it's the journey that counts, not the destination!! Besides, this route was as good as any National Park!

slow

atfer about mile 5 from I-70 the scenery was very impressive and the river was very close off the edge of the road. do not be in a hurry.

Spectacular

By John A |

I have wanted to motorcycle this route for a long time. Lets just say I;ll be back. What a beautiful road to see spectacular views and red rock. This is the most amazing ride i have been on and I will be planning a trip back with friends. I think the last weeks in September would of even been better with all the leaves out in full fall color.

Barely out of the way - well worth the drive

I am so glad I read someone's review about taking this scenic drive. It was worth the extra 30 minutes of time to enjoy all the scenery. Don't miss it!

Worthwhile backroad Drive In/Out of Arches NP

By johnmc82 |

On our way out of Moab / Arches NP and heading for Colorado, we decided to take the "Scenic Byway" of route 128 alongside the Colorado River on Route 128 back to I-70. This is a beautiful drive and much better than the route on the west side of the park we came down on. Took about a hour to drive the 40 or so miles but well worth it! Nickname of the road is "Dinosaur Diamond Prehistoric Pwky? and the buttes and canyons along the way are definitely a geology lesson!

Gorgeous Drive

By Barbara M |

The road winds through red cliffs along the Colorado River. It's a favorite area for bicyclists, river rafters, etc. The scenery was spectacular! Excellent free attraction.

Nice drive along the CO River

By KEH65 |

Lovely drive, lots of places to pull off and watch the rafters going down the river. This is one of the most beautiful places in the country, a must-see.

... Fill up the gas tank, and just 'do it'

By Wahoo__bMedina |

Incredible! ... we were heading to Moab from Colorado and decided to take this route into town rather follow I-70 WB to the SR 191 exit (Utah Exit #182). If heading WB out of Colorado, stop in Fruita, CO at I-70 Exit #18 (I think), fill up the gas tank, get a couple of beverages, use the potty, and enjoy the scenery from there. From Fruita, travel WB on I-70 to Utah Exit #204 (SR 128), and follow the signs to Moab. From Fruita, it was about a 75 minute ride with NO services of any kind (gas, food, etc.) between the two (2) places.

The scenery along SR 128 between I-70 and Moab, especially the closer you get to Moab, is incredible. The mountains of red rock, the various rock formations, the wildlife, and just everything about the drive is beautiful. For a good chunk of the ride, the Colorado River follows along SR 128; the river was full of boaters, rafters, and swimmers on the day we traveled by it.

It's tough to put into words the beauty of what we saw. ... just 'do it', and enjoy.

Leaning Moab.

By Keturah D |

We took this route when on our way to Salt Lake City and I really enjoyed more than the Arches - it was a beautiful drive.

Gorgeous scenic drive that DRIVERS will love.

By Cheryl H |

I loved this drive. If you're leaving I70 to see the Arches NP try to go into Moab and head back to the interstate this way. It's a beautiful twisting road that follows the Colorado river at bottom of a canyon. Then it goes twisting out over all different types of terrain and scenery. I was so thankful my hubby was tired of driving and that we had rented a sporty car.

I was also thankful there was very little traffic because it was narrow and twisty. It is paved but in places the pavement is uneven and there is no shoulder. Even so I was having so much fun I had to force myself to slow down and enjoy the view. We encountered more motorcycles than cars. You won't be regret the extra time to get back onto I70.

From Denver Route 70 to Scenic Highway 128 - VERY NICE DRIVE and SMOOTH ROAD!

By TDHSNJ |

My cousin told us about taking Highway 128 from Denver to get to Moab. We weren't quite sure as some prior reviews said the roads were horrible. We drove it on Tuesday, 10/1. After exiting off of Route 70, yes, the road is pretty bad (bumps, depressions, poorly paved, etc.) heading towards Cisco. However, once you turn off of this road (maybe about 15 miles or so from Route 70), the road is NEWLY PAVED and provided a smooth ride to Moab. The views on this road are well worth any additional time you will need to get to Moab. The Colorado River flows and runs parallel to Route 128 while providing some unique photo ops along the way.

Must see!

By Anthony G |

Drove on Highway 128 several times during our recent trip to Utah. Definitely scenic, runs parallel to the Colorado River and on the way to Negro Bill Canyon, Onion Creek and Fisher Towers. I was a little nervous the first time on it. There are a couple of sections that are a bit narrow and I had some sweaty palms, buy overall, I just drove slow, took in the sights and enjoyed it very much. Took it out as far as Cisco. Plenty of opportunities to pull off and shoot some great pictures if that's your thing.

I'm so glad I read the reviews on this byway 128 and decided to take it instead of the boring highway. It was gorgeous with lots of places to pull off to take pictures, have lunch, and stretch your legs. The road was also in great shape.

Amazing views!!!

Figured we'd take a road less traveled and we were so glad we did. The views on this road are absolutely amazing!! Loved every mile of this road. Totally worth the extra 30 minutes it added to our trip.

Beautiful

By KRM210 |

My kids and I really enjoyed the contrast of sceneries going from end to the other. The roadway was smooth and well maintained. I recommend everyone traveling from the east visiting the GC, ZP, or Bryce to take use this road!

Do yourself a favor, do it!!

By lcjcco2lf |

I drove this road on a motorcycle from Moab to the Cisco abandoned village. Minutes from there you have stunning views of the canyon, with beautiful red walls and rock formations following the curvy river Colorado along the way. This road is mentioned in the National geographic scenic highway and byways, and it deserved it's mention. I rode all the Way from Nevada, pass by the south rim, going by Monument valley and got back through Zion. This is the more memorable place I rode. Just a pleasure for the eyes.

2nd Most Scenic Hiway in the US!!!

By Thomas A |

Beautiful drive with tons of photo ops. It Follows the Colorado river up the Canyon to Fisher Towers. About 21 miles of Incredible scenery. We saw a heard of mule deer at about 10 miles up on the left side near the river and stopped at a nice winery for some tasting. Hauer Ranch is at mile 21 across from Fisher Towers and we had a great trail ride! Definitely worth the drive if u have a few hours!!!

You will not regret going.

By Rick C |

Utah is just beautiful anyway, But Highway 128 is amazing. Take a camera or Cell phone with you because every mile you dive you will want to pull over a take a picture. We have taken this road as early as April and as late as September. It is amazing.

AWESOME DRIVE

By KARIN D |

Was told to take this route from Colorado to Moab, UT and was NOT disappointed. The scenic byway was fantastic and added a few miles, but well worth it. We also took it home too!

Be Patient and Stop to Take In the Views

By kleic |

My husband and I drove from Fruita, Colorado to Arches via Interstate 70 and State Highway 191 before dawn recently and had a wonderful several hours in the park as the sun and the temperature rose dramatically before we needed to head back. Because we wanted to try something different, we went back to Interstate 70 by way of this gem of a rode. Google maps definitely won't suggest it and my husband wasn't so sure ... but oh, what a pleasure! Minus the stops we made to take in the scenery and snap a few pictures, it isn't actually much longer than the more travelled route but the vistas are really extraordinary. You basically follow the Colorado as it winds up through its canyon past ranches and camp sites and a lot of nothing. It's windy because the river is windy but it isn't up way high and it isn't a hard drive. There are few services along the way but lots of places to pull over and just look. It starts just outside Moab (on the park side) and ends up near Cisco (if you're driving it north to Interstate 70, turn left away from Cisco to get to the on-ramps).

Must do

By stevemNewcastle |

We drove the 128 from Moab up to Cisco and it is an absolutely fantastic drive. The road follows the Colorado river and the scenery is unbelievable. A few earlier reviews mention potholes , etc. but the road must have been recently renovated as it’s great.

WOW

By Bill P |

I had a little time to kill before driving to Bluff so I took my guidebooks suggestion. I am so glad I did. I had spent the morning at Arches with all the tour buses and RV's. This was such a different experience. It is truly awesome and highly recommend it.

Oh my god - Just gobsmacking

By James D |

Probably one of the most scenic roads I'll ever drive. We approached it from the north and once we pulled off the I70 and started driving across a high plain you could see the canyons ahead and you sort of knew something good was ahead. The road initially ran right beside the Colorado, through bends and curves in the river. Then it became a high sided Canyon with huge high sides and there were views of the huge stacks on the skyline. There was only 18 miles of it!!!! Took us ages to drive it with all the stops to photograph the sights. Don't miss this if in the area.

Yet Another Amazing Utah Road

Takes Your Breath at Every Turn

By MileMarker69 |

Amazing views of the natural, unspoiled wonder of Utah. Pictures cannot capture the beauty of this drive. If you get the opportunity, take it. You will not regret it.

One of the best scenic byways I have driven.

By neilc277 |

This road is a must if you are travelling from Grand Junction to Moab.
It is as dramatic an introduction to Utah's unique geography as are likely to find. The start as you leave I-70 is quite bland and the road runs through high desert for a while. Don't get disheartened though. Eventually you pick up the Colorado River on your left. A few miles on and you cross a bridge, which puts the river on your right. It gets interesting from here. You come to a wide plain with views of mesas and buttes in the distance. You then enter a very narrow canyon where rust and black cliffs tower 1000 feet above you. The base of some of these vertical monsters are literally a few yards from your vehicle. Towards the end these cliffs turn to the rounded sandstone rock formations. And then suddenly you are out and 2 miles south of downtown Moab. My wife said it was as if the highway was a portal to a strange land. She's not wrong. It does seem that you have arrived on another planet.
Dramatic, awesome, otherworldly and jaw dropping don't even come close to doing it justice.

A wonderful drive

By MICHAEL M |

Driving along Highway 128 is a trip through time. I have traveled along the highway on a number of occasion, but this was the first time I drove it end to end. Well worth the time. Winding along the Colorado River amid the Red Rock this road offers spectacular views and present plenty of places to stop and explore.

UTAH SR128 (UTAH'S HIDDEN BYWAYS II)

By Alaskaseeker |

UTAH SR128 (UTAH'S HIDDEN BYWAYS)

When I think about the most amazing roads that I have driven, and roads that I would like to see over and over again, I think about UTAH SR128 north of Moab, Utah. I have even driven out of my way to experience this beautiful, highly scenic, road by bypassing the faster Utah SR191 south to Moab, Utah, for Utah SR128.
I first encountered an image of this road in the late 1960’s and was determined to visit it. My first opportunity occurred in 1973, before Interstate 70 was completed in that area. At this point, Utah 128 was a dirt and gravel road. It has now been improved somewhat insofar as it has been paved and is a two way road.
This road can be driven in two directions, going toward or away from Moab, Utah. My personal preference is to drive south, beginning at Interstate 70 and terminating outside of Moab. I prefer this direction because it allows the driver to pull out on the river (i.e. Colorado River) side of the road for viewing and/or photographic purposes. I prefer to make this drive in the early afternoon in order to take advantage of the lighting for photographic reasons.
It should be noted that THERE ARE NO SERVICES ON THIS ROAD. You will pass the occasional ranch and guest ranch, so carry enough gas, water, and emergency equipment with you. In addition, cell phones and associated electronic devices function erratically, or not at all, here.
You begin your 39 mile journey at Exit 204 of Interstate 70. A three mile spur road will take you to the northern entrance of Utah SR128, which is a right turn (yes, there is a sign). For the first 8 to 10 miles of this road, heading south, you may wonder why I am sending you here. This section of the road is scrub brush and ranchland, as well as fairly flat. There is really nothing of note, but you can drive this at speed.
The wonderland area starts at the new bridge crossing the COLORADO RIVER. It should be noted that this is one of the only roads in the Colorado River system where you can travel paralleling the river.
At this point, you enter an area of red sandstone that is being down cut by the Colorado River, resulting in a myriad of rock formations of various fantastic shapes and colors. The river will be on your right, which makes it easier to carefully pull off of the paved surface for photographic/viewing reasons. DO NOT BLOCK THE ROAD WHEN MAKING A STOP!
A few miles further on gives you your first views of the FISHER TOWERS over the Colorado River. This is the image that caught my interest back in the 1960’s. There are sandstone pillars that tower hundreds of feet above the surrounding terrain and are accessible from Utah 128. There are a few places in the next mile or two that allows you a clear view of this scenic wonder, so take advantage of every turn out and photographic opportunity. If you are lucky, you might even see rafters floating slowly down the river. If you are interested in doing some rafting, there are numerous outfitters in Moab that will provide this service.
As you continue along, The Fisher Towers will swing to your left and you will pull slightly away from the river. A junction road will appear to your left terminating at the Fisher Towers parking lot (out-houses are available). Parking here will allow you to hike (i.e. moderate/strenuous trail) around the “Titan” and other towers that make up the group.
Returning to Utah 128 and making a left, you will continue south, passing a guest ranch on your right and the turn-off for Castle Valley (SR 1704) on your left. The Castle Valley road allows you to traverse some highly scenic red rock country, followed by a climb into the beautiful La Sal Mountains. This road terminates below Moab, Utah on Utah SR191.
Continuing south on Utah 128, you will re-join the Colorado River in some of the best red rock country of the drive. You will pass numerous turn-outs used by the rafters, which makes for safer areas to view the majestic, ever changing, scenery. The red walls of Arches National Park will soon be viewed to your right across the river, as the road winds through the final few miles to the junction of Utah SR191 and Moab. There is a bicycle path immediately to your right, so be on alert for cyclists.
Utah SR128 terminates just below the bridge carrying Utah SR191 on your right at the junction. Proceed to your left if you want to go to the town of Moab, Utah, which is the central hub for both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.
Have a safe and enjoyable trip.

Beautiful!

By jesse o |

And unexpected, too! The river is brown and not yet at high water and we are ahead of the summer crowds! Yet we saw a few kayakers and enjoyed hearing birds sing during roadside geology talks. The red cliffs rose all about us stained by streaks of dessert varnish! Layer upon layer of deposited sediments reveal the history of our planet! As the river flows by taciturnly unaffected.

Worth the drive!

By Carl N |

Six of us were heading from Grand Junction CO to Moab UT and decided to take this alternative route south. The sun was setting as we drove and the views along the Colorado River were wonderful. As the sun set the views got better. I only wish we had time to take advantage of the bike paths that lined the road as we approached Moab.

What a drive!

By jvirdo |

When heading east from route 191 the first things you encounter are a small park with a bridge over the Colorado River on the North side, and a semi-hidden spring that runs out of the rocks on the South side. However, the drive is what makes the difference. A person would be hard pressed to find a more picturesque drive. The road runs along the Colorado River at various elevations completely enframed by high, redrock cliffs. This is a photographer's dream with natural beauty, rafters on the river, and wildlife. Since the sun's angles are always changing, no two drives are ever the same.

Absolutely stunning!!

By Robert B |

Take the time to take this drive right out of the town of Moab. It was truly magnificent. It is a winding road that runs along the Colorado River and the sights are breathtaking. It is not a long drive but well worth it. You can either come back the same way or continue north to I-70 and come back that way. Well worth the trip

Drive from Moab to Grand Junction on highway 128

By DarleneRo |

The drive was scenic. We saw some cars like 25 miles but after that it was kinda lonely. The gravel road was not that bad. Overall, nice drive...

Take this route if you have time.

By Matt |

A beautiful, relaxing drive along the upper Colorado river.
A few riverside campgrounds followed by a scenic drive with some gravel pullouts.
Highly recommended.
Take your time.
There is one guest ranch along the way but no other services.

Beautiful, but....

By Me! |

Absolutely beautiful alternative route to Moab. I'd give it 5 stars but the road is horrible! I have good tires, but was amazed I didn't have a blowout hitting some of the potholes and construction work. They seem to be working on some of it, but have a LONG way to go. Enjoy the fantastic scenery, but watch the road!

Don't miss this drive

By Sherri L |

This was a fantastic drive heading into Moab from Colorado. There a many pull overs to stop on the road and just look. There also some very beautiful resorts along the river that is teeming with rafters at different times of the day. The Colorado is busy and you get a varied view of it along this route. It is free range grazing land so be careful of the cattle

Gorgeous Drive

By Davidfromllinois |

This route along the Colorado River skirts through a beautiful part of Utah...high red rock cliffs abut both sides of the narrow winding highway that eventually breaks into plains just before reaching interstate 70 heading into Colorado...I would highly recommend this scenic drive

No need to go to Monument Valley

By MandevilleDad |

Do not go to Arches without driving this byway. Took us past a ghost town, Cisco, then scenery after scenery. Seemed unreal. Be prepared for slower travel, but worth it

Love this place

By Dreamer641860 |

Awesome, fun stay! Cute retro hotel. Pool hot tub on the street. Nice breakfast. Beds comfy. Great lication

Scenic Byway 128 heading toward Moab - a must do

By Jamie C |

This was our first ever trip to Utah. Driving in from Grand Junction we took the reccs from TA reviews and tried it out. Wow! Totally worth it.

Simply Breathtaking

By 767NucEngineer |

Drove this route while traveling from Moab to Grand Junction. It is simply breathtaking in its shear beauty. You will not regret driving this route and it should be on everyones "bucket list" of places to see.

Stunning but scary!

By LAW64 |

A beautiful if slightly terrifying route from Moab towards Denver. The boulders overhanding the road are scary! However the route gives you beautiful views of the Colorado River. I had read that it was used by Disney to model the Thunder Mountain ride and you can see why! Not many restrooms along the way!!

Absolutely beautiful

By LeeannChicago |

I'd never seen the southwest before this trip and can't wait to return. The beauty of the area was incredible. Driving through Utah was a surprise to me... I had no idea what was there and am thrilled we made the journey.

Scenic byway is scenic.

By Cherry_Wonderdog |

Very scenic byway in Utah. Lots to see on the left AND the right. Worth seeing the scenery by the way.

Definately worth the detour

By CCJ1958 |

If you are travelling to Moab on the I70 from the east I would definately recommend turning onto the 128 at Cisco. The initial 10 miles or so are not that interesting, but as soon as the road meets the Colorado River the scenery becomes spectacular. A perfect introduction to the red rock country of Utah's national parks.

Just a breathtakingly wonderful detour on the way to Moab

By Goatesians |

Most detours have a negative connotation, but if you are traveling West and headed for Moab, don't fail to take the scenic route via Hwy 128.

This highway follows the Colorado River and provides some spectacular views of red cliffs and the Colorado River. If you are traveling West on the Interstate, take the SECOND exit that is marked Cisco. Now Cisco is not a place, only a concept, but you will backtrack East, but don't be alarmed, just follow the Hwy. 128 signs and you soon will be in for some stunning visuals.

Be prepared to stop often and have your camera ready. Treats along the way include the remnants of the Dewey Bridge and the Red Cliffs Resort (Mile Marker 14). You will see a lot of activity on the River as it will be filled with rafters and tubers.

NOTE: There is construction near Moab where they are constructing a bike lane. There are two stop lights on the highway for one lane traffic, so expect some short delays.

amazing!

By Kona2007 |

Must do! amazing beautiful, quiet! Everything is great there...loved it. Make sure you take your time, fill up your gas. Enjoy the beautiful lookouts.

Hard to rate after all the other beauty around Moab

By pamela t |

An interesting drive that is a little away from the general attractions of the area. There are so many attractions in this area that this drive falls somewhat in the shadows comparatively.
A great look at the Colorado River.

Want to dip your toes in the Colorado River?

By jetsly |

If your time is limited and you have to choose between this drive and Canyonlands, take this drive. Here you are down in the canyon, on a road that runs right alongside the Colorado for miles. Traffic is sparse, and there are plenty of pulloffs at which to take a photograph, or just lean back and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. If you are starting from Moab, turn around at the first bridge beyond the canyon, and the return leg will open up vistas that you missed when driving east.
Like UT 12 between Henrieville and Grover, this scenic byway is not to be missed.

Our scenic drive on hwy 128 was a disaster

By Susan A |

We started out on hwy 128 to see all the sights. Stopped at the Red Cliffs Lodge to visit the movie museum, which was good. Then went onwards to Fisher Towers area which was very nice. BUT beware if you are staying in Moab turn around there. We had no idea that continuing on that we would be so far away from Moab when the 128 ended and met up with Hwy 70 and the area past Fisher towers was just boring..... Don't go there.....

Excellent once you enter the canyon

By pat451 |

We started from I-70 westbound and took this road southwest. Pretty boring until you get to the Colorado River; then the scenery really gets spectacular. If you're heading into or out of Moab to/from the northeast, this is the way to go.

Monolithic Majesty!!! If you have time - DO NOT MISS!

By kewood99 |

Monolithic Majesty! Sooooooo glad I read these reviews last night to plan our route back to Salt Lake City. Truly the most beautiful drive ever! We stopped every few minutes. Previous reviews are correct, if someone is behind you, don’t let them rush you, pull over and let em go by. Wow, just Wow!! What a beautiful playground Utah is…we saw awesome campsites right on the River off the road, people mountain climbing, kayaking, white water rafting. Gods playground! After crossing the River, things take the weirdest turn, landscape is almost like moonscape!

One of the best scenic drives anywhere

By marilynpearl |

My grown children and I detoured a bit to enjoy this drive rather than going directly south into Moab from Interstate 70. Thank goodness we did! It provided two of our favorite experiences in Utah, unforgettable moments that we'll always share. One was stopping at a place where visitors can put a boat into the river. We simply took off our shoes and stepped into the storied Colorado River, and my son-in-law sang quietly, "Wade in the water." Priceless. The second was stopping at a particular bend in the river and, with the five of us standing in a row, seeing the beauty all around us and listening to the perfect silence. Magical. Whatever you're planning near Moab, please don't skip this relatively short drive.

Moab's Scenic drives

By sallywv |

We took all three of the recommended scenic drives around Moab and Rt 128 was the best of all three. If you only have time for one, this is the one. The drive was along the Colorado River and the coloring of the cliffs and mountains was awesome. The Mesa Scenic byway was great for the Mesa Arch. It is just a short walk from the parking area.

Incredible!

By Largesarge |

We were headed back to Slc airport and were told by a local to try this route. He was so right. Most of the way is canyon on both side, beautiful views all around. It looks like it is not evem real! The canyons give way to grasslands, lovely in their wn way. The road is newly paved most of the way, and even the old road is just fine. Don't miss this road!

Beautiful Road

By Walter O |

This is a beautiful road and is worth the drive, but the reviews that state that you should skip a trip to Arches or Canyonland National Park for this drive are incorrect.

Breathtaking Drive

By TCMaine |

I've done this route several times and yet it always surprises me. It is jaw-droppingly beautiful. If you're headed to Moab, don't do the boring highway route. Get off at Cisco and drive 128 along the river. It doesn't had much time at all and you'll never forget it. There are some road closures due to construction, rides and runs, and occasional rock falls. So it's good to make sure it's open.

At First intimidating but WORTH IT

By Melios333 |

I had planned this for our drive to Utah and after hours on the road decided just to follow my GPS, several tour guides and wait staff at restaurants convinced us we needed to take this road back. Utah is scary coming from the east because from the moment you enter there is nothing until Moab. I mean you can't see anything, there is nothing out there but desert. So on the way back, the red rocks around you are amazing, you cannot beat the views and there are plenty of stopping points along the river. My gps however would not recognize this route and we had to go without it most of the way back to the highway. Towards the end it gets flat and you don't see any signs for a little while or anything and then there is a cisco ghost town which we slowed down and took some pictures of. Also, "business 6" the "highway" that connects to the i70, is a total misnomer as there are no businesses. But rest assured, If you drag and drop the route to 128 in google maps and print it, you will you get back to the highway. Towards the end my GPS came back on and was telling me to go the opposite direction to I70 as the printed directions, but I followed the print out and it worked out fine.

Definitely a highlight of our Moab trip!

By rewardgal |

We chose this route from Grand Junction/ I-70 and were impressed almost the entire way. Once you get past the tiny burb of Cisco you will want to stop and take picture after picture!

The discovermoab.com website suggested this route and there are many interesting stops: i.e. Fisher Towers and beautiful Colorado River views. The steep canyon walls are a preview of your visit to Canyonlands National Park and some of the massive rock walls are right along side the road. Take your time and stop often!

The ONLY way to reach MOAB!

By Jack W |

This route is the ONLY way to approach Moab from the east. My husband and I have visited many times---and since discovering this beautiful road, we exit I-70 as soon as we can (Cisco exit) to reach it. The highway follows the Colorado River as you approach Moab and is a great entry point into the beautiful terrain of red rocks, cliffs, and desert scenery. We usually stop numerous times to take photographs or follow a short walking trail to see what's 'around the corner.' There is a beautiful spot to take photos of "Fisher Tower" along this route. This road will take a little extra time---but worth EVERY minute!

Highway 128

By Jetsi |

We are so happy that we took this route when traveling from Moab to Grand Junction. The entrance to this highway is south of the entrance to Arches so it is easy to miss. If you miss it, turn around and go back. It is so worth it! Marvelous views of the Colorado River and Canyons!

Beautiful views

By Pudik |

This is one of the best scenic drives with views from desert at Hwy 70 to Colorado river bank cliffs near Moab. There are a lot of fantastic rock formations, green valleys, vertical cliffs. This way is strictly recommended to choice to drive between Moab and Grand Junction.

Gorgeous drive

By tandmgroup |

Views from this drive are definitely worth the trip. So much to see and do along this drive. Camping along multiple areas as are also places to hike, watch people practicing rock climbing in the Big Bend area. Meanders back and forth following the river and canyon walls.

Beautiful!

By wirttravelers |

We started this scenic drive from I-70 and headed toward Moab. For the first 10 miles or so, the scenery was relatively boring and my family was underwhelmed. We even passed a couple of dead cows. But, when we connected with the Colorado River, all of that changed. The sides of the canyon began to rise and we encountered rock formations that reminded us of the famous Monument Valley. There were folks rafting on the river as well. By the time we had reached Moab, my husband was in love with the byway. He later declared it his favorite scenic drive of the road trip.

Awesome little detour

By denniss529 |

Are you a driver?

If you answer yes, take the drive and hug the Sandstone cliffs and drop offs into the Colorado. Amazing route. Be careful to share the road with cyclists and cows. Easy route to Moab from Grand Junction on I-70, easy trip from Moab up and back.

JUST DO IT!

By Victoria F |

If you are driving from the Grand Junction/Denver area of Colorado and traveling to Moab, take this route!!! I promise you, you won't regret it. My boyfriend and I were traveling across the country (Chicago to L.A.) and this highway was our favorite part of the trip (even surpasses our trips to Arches National Park, Zion National Park, and Redrocks Amphitheater).

We aren't in Kansas anymore - or NJ for that matter

By Steve_7153 |

We traveled from Grand Junction CO to Moab area (Red Cliffs Lodge) via I-70 - exited onto Rt 128 -- we are flatlanders from southern NJ so this entire driving experience was an eye-opener -- the best was yet to come. It doesn't come anymore scenic than this - road conditions were excellent and the views around every bend once you were traveling along the Colorado River were breathtaking. We became pretty comfortable driving Rt 128 after a few trips to Moab area for hiking

Good alternative to 70

By so-many-dreams |

Beautiful drive along the Colorado with lots of places to stop. Lots of trailheads along the way. Impressive rock formations, you come to the Fisher Towers on this route.

Another beautiful drive

By Senioronabudget |

As with other drives I have reviewed the same thing goes. Take your time. Stop and enjoy the views. Listen to the silence. Enjoy and don't lett the driver in a hurry behind you spoil your trip.

Beautiful Drive

By CKT808 |

This drive follows a canyon and river into Moab. We were coming from the east on I-70. We left Interstate 70 at highway 6 and then turned onto highway 128. Highway 6 was a little bumpy, but it goes through an interesting little "ghost" town named Cisco. Then highway 128 follows the Colorado River. Highway 128 has recently been improved. In fact, we had to wait at a construction area. The drive is beautiful with the river and the red rock canyon. It is a great way to experience that part of Utah.

US 128 is gorgeous!

By Margaretsheehan81 |

Exit 214 headed westbound on I-70 for Danish Flats is the turnoff for US 128
Pretty typical/nothing major for the first 20 minutes(ish?) then you enter a whole new world, immediately. Take the time to stop and take pictures!

Beautiful drive between Denver and Moab

By Margaret H |

This is a beautiful drive through famous cowboy film locations. You can also link it up with a visit to Red Cliffs Lodge and the Film Museum to find out about all the films made in the area.

Stunning drive, with new vistas at every turn

By mamaspooner |

I would highly recommend this drive. Can't tell you how many times we pulled off to take pictures. It is not a long drive, and well worth it. We were not going to be able to stop at the Canyonlands or Arches, but felt after taking this drive that we saw abit of both.

Spectacular scenery!

By soxie12 |

This route should be on everyone's itinerary. We stayed at Red Cliff's Lodge which is 14 miles west of Moab on rte. 128. We did not expect this incredible drive to our accommodations that night - but sure enjoyed the adventure! This road follows the Colorado River. The high red cliffs fall sharply into the river offering spectacular vistas and a lot of blind curves.

Incredible

By Amanda E |

Route 128 brought tears to my eyes at the sheer beauty of the scenery - many stops signposted to take photographs - it really is a must if heading towards or leaving Moab - absolutely took my breath away

a great ride on a rainy day

By rockymountaincamper |

This was a great ride for a rainy day. It rained so much that I got pictures of waterfall coming off the cliffs plus the water gave the rocks and cliffs rich color when the sun came out. We stopped at the ranch that had a old west movie museum which was interesting.

A good way to start a visit to Moab

By Rocks_road |

So many of the reviewers talk about taking this route between Moab and Colorado, but we drove down from Salt Lake City. My wife and I drove Hwy 128 from Moab to the Dewey Bridge and back on our first full day here. We thought it would be a good way to get introduced to the area. Our first lesson was about the dark stain color on the cliffs. We found out this is the 'varnish' that occurs on that type of stone due to the manganese in it. This is a very pleasant drive with lots of curves; probably better in a Porsche. I recommend stopping in at the Red Cliffs resort to visit the motion picture museum. They a a bunch of old cars in their parking lot too. Another 'must' stop is the Fisher Towers, about 15 miles from Moab. Drive on a gravel road about a mile to a parking lot/campground. The Towers are awesome.

Off the Beaten Track!

By Rameman |

Wow, glad we did this drive on the way to Moab....blown away by the gorge drive by the Colorado, twisty and windy at times but no problem for anyone who has driven in Europe! The colours were amazing!

Be Prepared.....no restrooms of food!

Do It!

Worth the extra 15 minute drive

By heidibakerco |

This is by far the best route from Grand Junction to Moab. The road starts off seemingly going the wrong way - don't miss the right hand turn to go to Moab - and is pretty blah. About 15 minutes into the drive everything changes! We couldn't stop saying "WOW" and stopping to take pictures.

An unexpected surprise

By wvred859 |

When posting along our journey on Facebook a friend suggested we get off I-70 and find UT 128. We did and were awed by the spectacular views. A must.

Driving through a "little" Grand Canyon!

By Robert B |

If you are driving west from Denver you must absolutely take the bypass to Highway 128 to Moab. It follows the Colorado River and rewards you with views very similar to the Grand Canyon. I've rafted the Grand Canyon and it is pretty close. In fact Hollywood uses scenes from this area in lieu of the big one. The route gives you almost 30 miles of absolutely stunning scenery. And it was surprisingly not crowded. Who can figure!!

Scenic Drive Not to Be Missed!

By BETTY E |

This drive was one of the highlights of our trip to Utah. The scenery is jaw dropping. Every curve offers another stunning view. We started at the end near Moab and drove almost to the end, turned around and viewed it all again. We saw things that we missed coming from the Moab end. Stopped at the Red Cliffs Lodge, the museum there is a must see if you are interested in the movies that have been filmed in the area. So glad we took this drive. Highly recommend!

Take the road less traveled

By Debra D |

We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Moab. While there, one of the staff, Martin, recommended we drive the scenic route 128 for at least the first 18 miles. It was fantastic! Hugs the Colorado River and at the 18 mile mark you can stop at the Red Cliff Lodge and visit their movie museum. Fascinating! We continued on to interstate 70 and also enjoyed the changing landscape along the way. Great recommendation, Martin!!

Like rafting the Colorado in your car

By KEO |

Don't speed, let others pass and suck in the beauty of this highway from Moab to Cisco prior to getting on I-70 East. Campgrounds all along the Colorado and the Entrada Sandstone walls are just as amazing as in Arches. It's like rafting the Colorado in your car since you basically follow it for 40 or more miles along this stretch. And, you beat the traffic up 191 to get to I-70 anyhow. Stop and see the rapids depending on the time of year and water flow. Just an enjoyable experience that capped of a great 3 days at Arches and Canyonlands Takes about an hour to get to I-70 this way, probably six of one and half dozen of another if you go the way Maps tells you.

Most amazing drive!

By Ray L |

A must see. This drive along the Colorado river is breathtaking. We stopped a few times for magnificent views and photos. A couple of small beaches along the way to dunk your feet or wade through the water. (Didn't dare get too close to the Rapids.)

Shorter and much more scenic than the GPS chosen route.

By TheGuv-and-Bolli |

Took this route based on other reviews and no regrets, it's so scenic following the river for much of the way, it also joins the interstate after passing through Cisco so that's another stop for a photo opportunity that I have reviewed separately.

Oh my gosh, to die for!

By MNice |

One of the most enthusiastic reviews I have written in a long time. If we had to choose between the Arches National Monument and this drive, I would chose this. Very few cars, awesome sights and it has accommodations and camping. It pops you right out on the interstate and you are back on your way. Not sure what more to say here; the enormity and uniqueness of it was unbelievable. We have been all over Europe and the United States and this truly is DIFFERENT mountains than we have ever seen. We were amazed and inspired.

Fabulous

By Paw B |

What a drive, this route is amazing, so much to see. We drove the route to go to Cisco, the ghost town where some of Thelma and Louise was filmed. So glad we took this road and visited Cisco. This is a must do if you are in the area.

This road is why you bought a car.

By zzzptm |

We made a 1-hour detour on our drive home from Utah *just* to do Highway 128. All along the Colorado River from Moab to about 12 miles south of I-70 is one of the most beautiful drives that you'll ever see. Ever. The road winds, turns, there's amazing views by the water, all kinds of fun here. We did this once before in 2010, and we did it again in 2015, in the other direction, and it was just as amazing.
