Beautiful gardens

By Leslie F |

We usually stop here on our way down the coast. It is a lovely garden, right on the coast. Lots of roses as well as assorted other flowers.

Fantastic!!

By gingersnaps527 |

We have been here a number of times. It is our favorite get-away. The rose garden is delightful during the summer. There is an amazing variety of plants on the trail. This is well maintained and easy to get around. There is a cottage that usually has some type of activity going on. There is a Japanese-styled garden and pond which is restful and gorgeous. The light show over the holiday season is a must see! Truly amazing! We were once treated to an hour long show of a whale feeding right off the coast. We were humbled by the experience. Travel up the road, park and take a short hike to see the seals and enjoy more of the coast. We like taking our lawn chairs and a picnic lunch to spend the afternoon watching the waves beat in on the coast.

Beautiful stunning light displays , gorgeous night lighting, a must see at holiday time 1000+ is a good rating !!! ❤️❤️

By goldenacres1717 |

Best ever love it , we invite friends and go more than once it’s so nice and beautiful , all the moving creatures made with lights all the decorated trees it’s a true gorgeous winter wonderland,

Absolutely beautiful

By sylviamae2842 |

Saw the holiday lights display. So beautiful. Go during the day and see the rose garden in the spring. We make it a regular thing to get out there. It's $5 per car to get in but it's well worth it.

View & garden

By Lucrecia F |

Great view of ocean beautiful gardens & holiday lights are spactacular. Day use fee is only $5 per vehicle

Stormy days

By Theresafox5 |

Most people come to shore acreas for the fabulous christmas light show from thanksgiving until after christmas, but i think the best time to ccome is on a stormy day. To come to the jagged cliffs ( stay a safe distance ) and watch the gigantic crashing waves is spectacular and well worth the trip in the rain. The waves must crash as high as sky scrapers or at least it seems so. You can stand along many other wave watchers for quite a while and not grow bored.

Definitely on the Highlight Reel of my life!

By P H |

Incredibly beautiful. There were high surf warnings the day we were there - making for crashing waves that sprayed into the sky - with all of the “oooo’s and ahhhh’s” usually reserved for a fireworks display. A wonderful picnic lunch, thousands of seals a Simpson Reef. Just amazing!

King tides

By sidetrack38 |

Beautiful view of the king tides. It was amazing. Highly recommended to those who like to watch the waves.

Beautiful plaxe

By robinrbr |

This is just a beautiful area. Make sure you pull over and get out and see the sights.

We took a few quick walks out to see the shore.

Beautiful!

By eharshman3278 |

The drive to Shore Acres is along the bay with lots of scenery. Once you reach there you are met with a view of the ocean as you walk along the bluff and visit the rotunda full of History. For the adventurous their is a trail down to a beach. For the rest of us their are trails thru the flowers and around the pond. Something is blooming pretty much year round. It is worth going back many times.

Glorious in All Seasons

By Kiper E |

We have visitied this park several times thtis year.

Beautifully blooming with whales just off-shore in August, a gorgeous sanctuary of Peace & Beauty. In March, the waves spectacularly crash on the rocks, sending spray sky high. At the Holiday time the grounds are artfully lighted, reflecting beautiful twinkles on the pond surface & in the delighted eyes of guests.

In all seasons & all weather the grounds are immaculate and gorgeous.

Truly a beautiful garden of wonder for all seasons.

The gift shop is filled with interesting treasures & books.

Amazing and unexpected

By D'Lorah H |

The Simpson family homesite and botanical gardens were astounding. I have never heard of this State Park, and never expected such a beautiful, elaborate gardens in such a remote area!

Pictures don’t do it justice

By wndg |

Stunning views and Gardens. We visited while Rhodies were at the end of blooming season. Wheelchair accessible footpaths. Beautiful gift store and host was very friendly and knowledgeable of the history. We are planning another trip in fall and checkout things we didn’t have time to see and wished we had booked longer stay😊

Outstanding scenry

By sunee333 |

Beautiful views of the ocean and the wonderful gardens. At any time of year or any weather you won’t be disappointed 👌

Beautiful

By Carol P |

We really didn't spend time on the ocean, but walked through the gardens istead. Not very large, but very well maintained, peaceful, and beautiful. Definitely recommend.

Beautiful show of flowers and rugged coastline

By Marjorie C |

The gardens were beautiful as always - Daffodils and tulips in bloom (on March 25th) and spectacular magnolias. Enjoyed hiking to the rugged cliffs north of the gardens and the peaceful ocean cove on the south. We were lucky to get a cool, clear day with very few other visitors. This is always a favorite place for our 3 generations - fun for us, our children and young grandchildren.

A bit off the beaten path but what a find!

By SDCooks |

Our daughter recommended this out of the way State Park, which includes beautiful gardens and a geologically interesting small beach. It is well worth the trip to get there. There is a $5.00 parking fee to enter...unless you have an Oregon park pass...but it's well spent. Dogs are not allowed in the garden. This a beautiful 'mirror' garden...one side is the same as the other. Box hedges, roses, rhododendrons and many other plants provide a lush garden. We took the opportunity to listen to the history of the garden and the family that started it in what had been the home of the head gardener in the late 1800s and early 1900s. There is a beautifully kept Japanese style garden on the grounds as well. There is a gift shop but we didn't visit it. Gates allow access to the scenic overview and the Simpson beach. Simpson beach had really interesting formations eroding from the surrounding rock walls. From the scenic overlook we watched pelicans and other birds dive for fish. You can drive a bit farther to the Simpson overlook to hear elephant seal on the rocks. Binoculars would be helpful to see them. Great area to explore. Pack a picnic lunch. Restroom available near the gardens.

Love it!

By brushjumper |

We always stop here when in the area. Beautiful flowers to enjoy and nice gift shop to browse in. The flowers were not as much in bloom as our first visit here.

Beautiful and Historic

By AJ B |

This is a great place, and I am glad I went, but I was hoping to see the waves in the pictures, which are only that big in the wintertime. Still, it was beautiful and I loved the history. I will be back in the winter!

Gorgeous in winter

By Camille R |

Technically early spring, but the point is with only a couple early tulips, it's still gorgeous. As a side-note: the walking trail along the cliff to the reef lookout is very wet and muddy for abiuht 500 feet. No way to avoid it. Wear rubber or well-treated & high-top hiking boots. The walk takes about 50 minutes stopping for pictures. I advise just walking on the road back to where you started. (Note that my pics included the WWII bunker and a sea lion sunbathing- yes, he was alive...)

The highlight of our day!

By Robby G C |

The Shore Acres State Park has two attractions: The shore and the gardens. Both of them are gorgeous!

We started with the shore first. We explored everything as it was so gorgeous.

The ocean was always with us. Near us were massive boulders. It was amazing!

On the land there were lots of rocks and water. However, I had never seen such a thing. All the rocks seemed to be glued on the massive boulders. These were lava tubes. Wow!

The ocean liked to hit with its waves on the massive boulders.

We even met deer.

The gardens were beautiful as well! It was well maintained. Lots of people came to visit the gardens. They enjoyed these gardens. Me too!

And all this for 5$ per person.

I will always remember this place. By the way, there is a lot of parking, even for RVs.

This was our highlight on the day. We would come again, next time we are in this vicinity.

This is a must see!

a must visit

By bevandbuz |

A wonderful experience. Gardens are lovely and the setting is beautiful. Has a nice gift shop also. Easy drive from Coos Bay

One of the most beautiful places i have ever been

By Ivy M |

I stopped at this park as part of an American roadtrip and this was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The garden is beautiful and the rose garden is truly wonderful! Don't forget to go down to the beach to see the natural beauty of the ocean.

A beautifully kept garden

By Genevieve R |

Traveling in May brings lots of blooms! The rhodies were in full bloom, but we were too early for the roses. You need to purchase a Oregon State parking pass for your car ($5) otherwise, there is no admission charge. The grounds are meticulously maintained. Nice little gift shop. Knowledgeable docents around. A Coos Bay must see.

Very pleasant state park, great time here

By MelvinPusfinger |

This is a great place to spend a few hours if you are in Coos Bay. There is a five dollar entrance fee. For that you get wonderful views of Oregon’s rocky coastline. There is also a botanical garden that is well worth a visit. We also stayed for volunteer George’s presentation in the main house and that was very enjoyable. And there is also a path to Simpson’s beach, not for swimming, but there is a pool where the kids can paddle safely. This is also a great place to have a picnic and there are plenty of picnic tables. We had a very enjoyable experience here.

Beautiful gardens

By Donna R |

The gardens here are beautiful.   They are not huge, but the roses would give the gardens in Portland a run for their money.   Very well manicured.   Good viewpoint nearby if the fog isn't in yet.

Holiday Travel

By Rick F |

Just happened upon the gardens being all lit up with Christmas lights. what a spectacular display!!!!

Always something new to see in the gardens

By Marisa F |

Rhododendrons galore! Visit in May to see every color of rhodies out there! Well maintained garden and parking areas.

Beautiful gardens and beach

By Schmangy H |

This isn’t a large area, but it is very nice. We enjoyed the slow strole through the well manicured garden. And could have spent several more hours looking out the Pacific. Every step along the cliff over looking the shore line was better than the last.

Christmas at the gardens

By Brenda Z |

I went to see the sunset at Shore acres and experienced a bonus of a spectacular Christmas light display. So glad I stumbled into it.

The Fabled Oregon Coast is Here

By OregonTopaz |

The Simpsons of lumber baron fame certainly knew where to build their home on the beautiful Oregon coast. This stretch of bluffs, rocks, reefs, and waves has the awe inspiring beauty that visitors hope to see. It is changing all the time, but always brings a sense of the untamable. Visitors can watch from the protected gazebo, take the trail leading to beaches, where Simpson Reef is loaded with seals, they can often spot whales spouting, and visit a beautiful garden which is an example to all beachside gardeners of what can be done in a salt air environment. Visitors can walk along the trail by the tennis courts and when the high surf advisories are in effect be treated to incredibly thrilling breakers dashing salt water at least 100 feet in the air.

Don't miss it!

Christmas Lights Display. Lots of lights but parking fills quickly

By TravelerCory |

After looking for some pf the best Christmas Lights in Oregon, we came across several lists that listed Shore Acres as one of the places to go. Looking at the website, it opened at 5:00 pm. Not knowing how limited parking was, we didn't line up until right at 5:00 pm. Once we got to the pay station, they told us to wait for about 15 minutes as they needed to try to get some more spots open. Once we got the ok to head to the parking area, we were able to find a spot moderately quick.
Once we were parked, we walked a little bit to the Christmas lights display. It is very evident that this display DOES belong on those lists that listed Shore Acres as one of the top 15 places to visit to see the lights in Oregon. There were many displays of moving lights such as whales jumping or frogs in a pond. It is easy to walk through the park and take your time to look at each display. There is room enough to let others go around you if you would like to take a few minutes to take some pictures.
Cost for parking is $5.00. The lights display are open each year until New Year's Eve. They try to add more lights each year so even if you saw it last year, it may have changed. If you go, make sure to arrive early (before 5) to get parking.

A real treasure on the southern Oregon coast

By Marie N |

We love the trails through the forest and along the cliffs overlooking the churning Pacific ocean. The views from the shelter near the gardens offers a break from the wind and, of course, the gardens are fantastic.

It is so beautiful

By verimeri |

When you go out there you will be amazed. Hard to believe this was once the area of a private mansion and their gardens. The gardeners cottage is larger than many people homes. The walk down to the private beach may be difficult for some but there are resting places on the way back up.

Holiday Lights and Scenic Beauty

By Jay Tea |

First visit and was very impressed. The coastline is impressive and the Holiday lights in the huge garden were amazing. I can see this becoming a yearly tradition.

Christmas time

By John C |

Nice place to go and see Christmas display. It's just fantastic. You need to see this during the Christmas time especially if your not from the area and visiting during holidays. Bring camera it's definitely worth the trip there

Crazy big waves

By azsommelier |

Go to place for out of town company and anytime the waves are big! No better location to watch the huge waves. When waves are big up to a hundred photographers are stationed out here to catch the big one. Also, a great wedding site in the summer. You cannot miss the lights here from Thanksgiving to end of December.

Like barking? Visit the seals!

By DoodleDogDad |

Decided to check out the park so we started at Sunset Beach. Basic little beach with picnic tables and a place to hang out. Next stop, Simpson Reef overlook to see the seals and sea lions. Bring the binoculars! It's a reef where seals go to hang out and bark it up. Cute for the first 10 minutes but its a lot of seals and a lot of barking. Maybe more exciting in July when migrating from California and being chased by Great Whites and Orca pods! Last stop, cape Argo - nice view of the ocean from the end of the cape. Short walk from parking. Overall nice visit to the area.

Holiday Lights Review

By Glenn O |

Shore Acres should not be missed. You can witness massive waves crashing into the sandstone shore here. The shoreline has million dollar views, no matter where you point your camera. Louis Simpson used to have large estate here. Today only the Gardner's House and the gardens exist. Each December a Holiday Light display in the gardens is set up. There are over 325,000 lights on view. Is is quite festive. Coffee, hot apple cider, and cookies are available for a donation in the Gardner's House. There is a gift shop if you wish to pick up a momento. There is a parking fee of $5.00 at the entrance. They do not accept credit cards at the booth entrance. So bring cash. Dogs are not allowed in the park. Please arrive as early as possible. The holiday lights events start at 4 PM. I arrived at 345 and a line at the entrance was just starting to form. When I left at 545 pm the line was staggering. I beg you to arrive early, gentle reader. Save yourself a headache.

Great displays

By Michael H |

For the holidays Shore Acres is decorated by the community with over 350.000 x-mas lights. The displays are for the most part remarkable with some being exceptional. Definitely worth the five dollar parking fee.

Breathtaking! Don’t miss.

By charlottebelle67 |

Hands down, my favorite thing we did in Coos Bay. Go to see and listen to the seals (binoculars / monocular will help to see them in detail but you will hear and spot them regardless.) The cliff top walk is absolutely breathtaking. I’m not attaching photos because my photos don’t even begin to do Justice to the vast ocean views.

Beautiful..do not miss

By Charlie J |

Beautiful park along the coast sheltered by the trees. Do not miss this!! What a gem. The park itself is very nice with a great view of the beach and Pacific Ocean. Just beautiful! But the best part is the grounds of the house built by lumber baron Louis J. Simpson for his wife Asa Meade (read the history it is quite interesting). There are formal gardens, a Japanese garden and a beautiful rose garden.

Fantastic vista

By Sheri J |

I love Shore Acres! Wonderful hiking, interesting rock formations, intriguing history, peaceful gardens. Just a wonderful place to spend a few hours or days as we camped at Sunset Bay State Park.

Amazing natural beauty

By Jeff D |

From the well-kept, colorful gardens to the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, you have a variety of amazing views. We only had a couple of hours to explore and could not visit all that wanted to see. Plan to be here all day.

CORRUPT LIBERAL PARK

By Tourist60363567371 |

This park that has funding from the state of Oregon, denies entry to see the Christmas lights we have seen for the last 6 years. Forcing people to continue to pay even after covid is over is wrong.

Park Rangers on a giant power trip and will intimidate you during the evenings so you can't walk the path in. That park ranger deserves no further employment there.

I will no longer support or visit until they change their ways. I will go to the newspaper next if I have to over their decisions on the Christmas lights.

Beautiful gardens and a glimpse of Oregon history

By Marvin M |

Wonderful crashing waves and coastal outlook. With the added benefit of some beautiful, well-kept gardens, and a dose of turn-of-the-century Oregon history.

Great place to see!

By Steve G |

Best during the Christmas season for the light displays or to watch whales or the surf during storms

Gorgeous place to visit!

By maryk657 |

While on the Oregon coast we (my husband, sister & her husband) drove to Coos Bay from Bandon. This park is amazing and a must see. The botanical gardens relax and calm you each step you take. Don't forget to check out the beautiful rose gardens. Love all the names of them. The park also had a wonderful telescope that you could see far out in the Pacific ocean. We saw lots of different kinds of seals enjoying themselves. Check this place out when visiting the coast in Oregon.

Great Ocean View & Park - Closed Before Sunset in March

By RFTraveler |

Visited this park twice, in December for the Holiday Lights and in March for the Ocean. Awesome display of lights in the gardens amidst music and treats, definitely put one in the joyful mood, In March at a rock shelter on the coast enjoyed waves catapult over rock outcroppings. Heard you could sight whales from this point but they didn't make the stop the day I was there.

Only downside: March is off season so the park gates closed at 7 pm so no chance of a Sunset view from that park. But there's a whole string of parks in that area so I managed to overcome my disappointment.

Nice Botanical Garden

By cohoman |

The botanical garden near the gift shop was surprising large. I especially liked the Japanese Garden with the pond. The gift shop at the entrance of the garden contained your typical trinkets and snacks. Worth a stop if you're in the area.

View incredible but Christmas lights are divine

By Wills Wanderers |

Wow. We’d heard about the annual light extravaganza but finally made it this. It’s a five hour drive one way from Salem Oregon. We went mid week so no issues with parking which is $5 as it’s consider day use in the park system. No admission fee to wander the bright lovely gardens.

Oregon Coast trip.

By BOBandBECKY |

Had a blessed time here. We have great picture & memories of the area. Can’t help but like this place. Enjoyed our time just making memories together.

A Coos Bay Gem of Beauty!

By Linda H |

The trip through road construction was worth the drive. This park is lovely, with a fantastic ocean view and a beautiful botanical garden area to explore. It is a great place for a family outing and picnic. The gardens are well maintained and very pretty despite it being the end of July. I can only imagine what the gardens look like in the spring or early summer. The ocean view nearby has an observation room that provides an interesting history of the estate. The gift shop is full of variety. It is an all around great experience that can happen in just a few hours or all day, depending on how many trails you wish to follow.

Best storming watching location on the Oregon Coast!

By Seracdog |

As spectacular as this area is in the Summer it is equally if not more so in the Winter during a storm. It just may be the best place on the Pacific Coast to watch a storm. As waves hit the rocky shoreline they often produce water "fountains" that reach up 200' into the sky... jaw dropping! There are a number of great videos on youtube. Type in huge waves shore acres to get started.

The Most Interesting Spot Between Newport and Brookings

By Sarah B |

We spent 6 days between Newport and Brookings visiting and hiking a number of coastal sites - and Shore Acres was, hands-down, the most scenic and interesting spot. Although the hiking trails were not vast, we could have watched the waves hit the amazing geological formations for hours. From Bandon, it is a 45-min drive that feels out there after you leave 101. Although we explored Sunset Bay (~10 minutes north) and Cape Arago (~10 minutes south), Shore Acres was the best.

One of my favorite places to visit when in Coos Bay

By Keeks0503 |

Shore Acres is a beautiful state park, the gardens are absolutely beautiful. During the Christmas months they decorate with millions of lights and have tours of the garden keepers quarters. Lots of hiking around beautiful at anytime of the year!

Oregon Coast Vacation Trip

By I4030GGgeorges |

Worth the travel through Coos Bay to the coastline to Shore Acres Park - plenty of different activities to do. Wife and I viewed the Rhodies in full bloom. Went up to the ocean viewpoint and viewed the sea lions - at the point was a volunteer who had a telescope set up for closer viewing.

It's more than gardens

By Sherry R |

We love coming to this park. It's a wonderful combination of stately gardens where you can wander quietly among the rhododendrons and seasonal displays, and wild nature where you can stand on a cliff and watch waves crash against the rocks below while listening to sea lions barking farther south along the coast.

So beautiful

By Patrick D |

This is my favorite place to go. In December must see light show, family and I go there annually for the Christmas light display. Dress warmly.

Stunning Coast & Gardens

By Michelle008_800 |

My husband and I drove into Shore Acres on our trip up the Oregon coast. It was beautiful and we were so glad we went. The coast is breathtaking and the gardens are amazing. The rhododendrons were blooming and the vibrant colours were just stunning. Would highly recommend the drive in if you’re into nature and serenity. Very peaceful area.

Beautiful formal gardens, perfectly maintained.

By Ashlandbuck |

Beautiful old formal gardens, perfectly maintained, I'm told, by volunteers. It was nice and sunny when we visited. No dogs.

So Many Parks

By oek9mom |

Again, I was amazed at the number of state parks & all of them well kept & easily accessible. This area was beautiful! Take it in!

Best park n the south coast

By Karen S |

From wave watching during winter storms, Christmas lights during the season, to rhodies for mother's day and roses in June, this is one of the great parks of the S coast

Just beautiful

By tawny1956 |

Another place you must stop if you’re in the area. The views of the coastline are awesome, with walking trails all along the water. We were treated to four deer just meandering near the parking area.

Scenic trails and beautiful gardens on the Oregon Coast

By brendenrb |

My wife and I hike the Trail on the ocean bluff at least twice a month. an easy 2 mile hike with plenty of ocean views. In winter the waves can be spectacular. There are places in and around the park one can also drive to see waves and whales. The gardens are gorgeous.

You should go!

By Rebec-PDX |

If you're in the area you should definitely stop by Shore Acres. The ocean meets interesting rock formations with a great view. The rock wall is a little short so be watchful of young children. The gardens are lovely to meander through.

Caution

By Hede4545 |

Be Careful if you’re unsteady or with toddlers. The retaining wall that protects you from falling over the cliffs is very short. Over the years the cliffs on the other side have eroded back. If you’re elderly like us or young and active it’s a danger. Being unsteady or running about is a hazard. There’s nothing to fall onto on the other side of that short wall.. Beautiful but no need to peer over. I’ve loved this place for years but now I’m in my seventies I’ll stay 50 ft back or just enjoy the gardens!!!!!

Botanical Garden

By Western View |

Beautiful botanical garden with a formal garden, rose garden, pond, walking paths and a variety of flowers depending on the season. There is a gift shop as you enter. Plan to spend an hour there. $5 daily state park fee per car.

Breathtaking

By Lenora W |

During the summer the flowers are in bloom, absolutely beautiful and serene. There are wonderful views of the ocean with waves crashing against the cliffs. There is a covered area where you can view the waves during the winter. During the Christmas season there are millions of lights including animated light displays. They serve cookies and hot cider during this time also. A visit to this park is a must.

A hidden gem

By JohnWSweet |

This special garden, sitting right on the ocean, yet protected from winds and waves, is spectacular. Created in the early 1900's by a timber baron, the gardens have been brought back to live by Oregon's Dept of State Parks. Well worth the extra drive off of Highway 101 to visit.

Flower Power

By David O |

Went here on a whim and was charmed by the shoreline and the easy walking paths that give great views of the ocean, but was then astounded to learn of a long ago estate where the gardens are still maintained in a most wonderful way. Acres of lawns and dozens of flower beds with luxuriant blooms in every direction. If you get near Coos Bay this a don't miss. What a wonderful way to spend a few hours.

Simply amazing

By mahadana |

We got to the park in the early morning and had the gardens all to ourselves. The flowers were still in bloom and we were stunned by the beauty of this park. The coast is also a,axing, and the small observatory has wonderful history about this location and its original residents. A definite must for anyone remotely in the vicinity.

Gorgeous Park

By Gina W |

This went on my list as one of my favorite parks after our visit! We walked out to look at Cape Arago. It was beautiful that day. The ocean was in high tide. We stood there for a while just watching the ocean waves crash on the rocks. Beautiful place!!

We then walked over to the Botanical Gardens which were just beautiful!! I would have never expected a beautiful garden there. Will return in the future!!! Worth the trip!

Beautiful view.

By diwa011055 |

Beautiful view of the ocean. Great parking. Easy access from the main rode. Very nice walking areas.

Impressive gardens with delightful beach access

By Marc M |

We really enjoyed touring the gardens. The shirt walk to the beach was well worth it. Nice secluded inlet with room to explore and very few visitors on a beautiful summer Saturday!

The walk back up was equivalent to 3 or 4 flights of stairs, not bad for Oregon Coast beaches...

Beautiful!

By Debbie B |

This is a must see. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained. The views out over the ocean from the bluffs are spectacular. There is a trail down to a secluded beach. There are some picnic tables near the observation building on the bluffs which would be a perfect spot to have lunch while taking in the views. The volunteers in the garden and in the gift shop were knowledgeable and friendly. There is an interesting history of how this place became a public park. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and highly recommend it.

Beautiful!

By Erin J |

Well worth the drive! There were only a few cars there and we took a great hike down to beach. On the way back we toured the botanical gardens. This was beautiful and unexpected.

Fantastic views of the ocean and unique rock formations

By Webfoot17 |

Shore Acres State Park is a must see if you are visiting the Coos Bay Highway 101 area. Plan on spending a couple of hours watching the ocean break on the rocks from the high viewpoint, walking through the awesome gardens and visiting the nice gift shop. In December they have an awesome Christmas light display that draws tens of thousands.

$5 Day Use Fee

By PandaHouston |

We drove from Bandon to visit Shore Acres State Park. Came around 12:30 on Sunday, 7/25 and the weather was a little foggy and gloomy. You will need to pay $5 for Day Use for the Shore Acres State Park. There are various access points with nice views.

A must visit!!!!!

By Linda D |

I have visited Shore Acres in the spring for the tulips and daffodils, in the summer for the roses, and over the holidays for the beautiful lights. I don't think I have ever missed a visit to Shore Acres on any trip to this area. $5 to park, everything else is free. Nice trail along the cliffs if you care to take a hike.

Wonderful way to close out 2017

By Susieqnurse |

This was my second visit to Shore Acres and we were there for the Holiday Light Show. AMAZING! We had wonderful weather. Lights were just super. Hard to express in words. Would definitely go again - maybe every year as a holiday treat!! Don't miss this experience!!

Gem of a Surprise

By lost_bobcat |

What a great experience, there are three parks that connect and you can hike along the rim to each one. The first one has a campground and the middle one a botanical garden. Do not miss this area, we were so happy to find it, some good low tide pool walking spots as well. Good half day trip

Gorgeous Gardens, Breathtaking View, Stunning Landscaping,

By LoveToTravelSamson |

This is the place to practice your photography skills! No shot will be bad. Parking is cheap, $5, admission is FREE. It is much bigger than you'd imagine. In the distance you can hear 'barking'. Walk outside the manicured gardens to the winding paths to the seashore. Hundreds of sea lions are basking & barking.

Don't miss this if you're in Coos Bay

By K&J_California |

What a beautiful place to watch the waves come in and a botanical garden to boot! Very relaxing and well worth the 20 minute or so drive from Coos Bay. Highly recommended.

Lovely Views

By M&J |

A super lovely park, with amazing views. We saw numerous seal lions, seals, whales and even a couple of orcas.

Spectacular

By grantc162 |

There are very few places in the entire country that can match this park for the natural beauty and fantastic views. The are miles of easy and moderate trails. All are kept in excellent shape. There is even some interesting local history...

ALL THE MONEY THAT TIMBER COULD BUY PRODUCED A MARVELOUS COMPOUND

By BULLDOG742014 |

A frequently told dynastic story but with an excellent result. "Asa Mead (Simpson) begat the hard drinking and hell raising Louis J. "L.J." (Simpson), who prophet-like married a divorcee named Cassandra (!) Stearns, whose death was followed a few months later by the first big fire. And L.J. then with his second wife begat by adoption two young daughters, etc.,etc.etc."

That said, a timber and ship building empire produced a great deal of money, which in turn eventually looked east to New England for shingle style elegance and personal
glory.

Well worth going to see. Beautifully designed and landscaped, the compound has cycled through various phases of destruction and ownership ...including being leased by the War Department as an Officer's Club and billet during WW II ... and has now come to rest as a State Park for Oregon.

L..J. ran for the Republican Governor's primary, but never made it. Today, however, if you would seek his monument, look at the whole of North Bend.

A bronze statue of L.J. now sits in the middle of the traffic roundabout at Grant Circle in North Bend, leaning slightly backwards, as if facing into the wind off the Bay.

Even so, Shore Acres (Cassandra wanted it named "Shoreacres" but L.J. won out)
is gorgeous. W.R. Hearst built the press lord's fantasy of Hearst Castle, and
Rockefeller gave his family and history "Pocantico" (what one current Rockefeller has
called "What God would have built if he'd had the Money !!).

That said, "Shore Acres" is light years ahead of such "Gaudys" of moneyed vulgarity as Elvis Presley's "Graceland."

It is a testament to good judgement and good taste.

Walking around the ocean cliff vistas and beautiful sea pines, one thinks of the Simpsons and their lives on the Oregon Coast. Fires, the Great Crash of 1929,
Bankruptcy and a massive stroke felled L.J. in 1949.

But do come visit. As the ending of "Hamlet" has it:

"Absent Thee From 'Felicity' Awhile." (Hamlet, Act 5, Scene 2)

An American story, but a timeless one.

Great ocean views

By Rosemary W |

This is a very attractive park overlooking the ocean. The road passes through a beautiful forest. There are restrooms with running water. There is an observation building to look at the view while protected from the weather. There is also beach access.

We visited the botanical garden. It's a formal garden with paths, flower beds, and a small pond. This (Sept/Oct) is not really the best time to see flowers in bloom, but there were some. The gardeners were in the process of preparing some of the beds for winter. Many pants have identifying abels. I was surprised to see palm trees and other species that don't seem suitable for this climate.

#disability #accessibility
Most of the paths seem wheelchair accessible, although some are seriously cracked or otherwise in disrepair. The pond in the garden is accessed via steps.

My last visit was to lake at the beautiful Flowers. The trip before that was to look at and enjoy the absolutely amazin

We love Shore Acres State Park. We go to Coos Bay, North Bend and Charleston, Oregon about one time a year. We also love Sunset Bay and Sunset bay State Park and Campground. It is open year around and the Campground is protected by terrain from the wind from the ocean in bad weather. It is a great place to camp with or without an RV. Solar water heating fro the showers.

Maybe we were at the wrong gardens?

By frequent_traveler290 |

We were really expecting a 5-star Botanical Gardens experience after reading all the reviews. Must admit, both of us were somewhat disappointed. Yes the rose gardens were in full bloom and the roses were glorious. Noticed a few dead plants that were obviously dead for awhile. The pond was just okay. Never did find the greenhouse. It was certainly anti-climatic. Overall, our visit was okay; don't think we'll go back again.

Hidden from hwy 101

Not as busy as other State parks on the coast, maybe cause its not on 101. Great ocean views and a secluded garden that is very well maintained.

Waves

By ldconlee |

There are many things to see at Shore Acres. There is a wonderful botanical garden, and a shelter building where you can watch the waves when the weather is bad.

Memorial Day travel

By Kayperk |

OMG. We wandered upon this park while riding around Coos Bay. So glad we did. It was a fun place to see the sights.

Breath Taking!

By Kathy M |

The waves are so strong at high tide that they leave you breathless! It's that amazing feeling you have after watching fireworks, as each one is bigger and better! Pets can't get out, so plan accordingly, but it is so worth it, especially if you can spend half an hour or so just watching the waves crash.

Christmas Lights

By Lollyberg |

The Christmas lights at Shore Acres are truly magical. Beyond our expectations. A place to visit at any season.

Most beautiful place on the coast

By chinookon |

Best place to see hudge crashing waves shoot up into the sky after a storm.Tons of Christmas lights on display from Thanksgiving til New years day. $5.00 fee unless u have a parks pass. You won't be disappointed if you visit

Beautiful Gardens and Stunning Ocean Views at Shore Acres

By HermistonNana |

Formerly a timber baron's estate the state now manages the beautiful grounds. It's a great place to visit on a rainy, stormy day at the coast because there is a glass fronted building for viewing the ocean. You can watch the storm and stay warm and dry! Many opportunities for beautiful photographs here.

World Class beautiful place

By Michael P |

You need a car to get there, As a car-dominated area I would not recommend walking or riding a bike, it has some of the most breathtaking views on the coast. Dropped a star because of the limited ways to get to it.

One of the most beautiful places on the Oregon Coast

By nwrambler2015 |

Come in the spring and summer for flowers, come in the winter for the lights and make sure to see the surrounding area. A garden spot with a fabulous view.

Breathtakingly beautiful area

A spectacularly beautiful state park. Seals barking in the distance and the serenity of a the ocean. Easy to meander along the trail.

You all need to come visit Shore Acres Light Display Thanksgiving through New Years Eve. Extravagant LED light display, free cookie and cider! Wonderful holiday tradition

Beautiful views

By rmps_philomath |

Standing on the edge of the shear cliffs looking out over the ocean - you can't but that kind of experience. Well worth the journey off the beaten path.

Most beautiful

By westie2 |

This is the second and most beautiful of the 3 state parks that may be accessed after a short drive from Rte. 101 in Coos Bay. The park is the former estate of a timber baron who's formal gardens have been maintained and probably expanded. The many views from the park are stunning and I only wish we had the time (and energy) to hike some or all of the trail connecting the 3 parks.

Beautiful coastline! Lovely Park!

By Marion O |

We loved this park! We traveled the entire coast of Oregon and this was one of our favorite stops. The rock formations on the coast are unique and beautiful. Then we walked over to the Garden and enjoyed a fun talk by George inside the caretaker's house. There is also a lovely gift shop that supports the park.

a Don't MISS park of stunning floral, plant, beach and ocean overlook!

By Craig F |

This is THE Coos County show stopper that should not be missed, but often is. I was mesmerized when we first visited 33 years ago and am always glad I came whenever we drive out for a whale watch or to take out of towners. This is famous for its Oregon calendar viewpoint. We like to walk the two mile trail to get into the park, cruise to the gazebo and sit on the sturdy brick wall overlooking the crashing waves where you just might get sea sprayed! then we take our time walking the gardens that are beyond stunning hidden behind the hedges. Every month offers a different array of annuals and perennials, including roses, rhodes, azaleas, daffodils, and more. The reflecting pool is large and restive, offering quaint walkway and bridges and photo opportunities all around. Then if you are hale and hearty, take the walking path south and down to the private beach of shell sand, climbing rocks and powerful crashing waves. There is a gift shop with a wide assortment of items and souvenirs. I have talked myself into wanting to go again soon... Christmas lights display is spectacular from Thanksgiving to New Years. Go early to enjoy garden and beach then stick around for lights and carols and cookies and cider.

Beautiful

Watching the waves is super special. Whale watching (in season) is a great way to enjot sitting and soaking up some sun. AND, please don't forget the Christmas lights in December WOW!!!

One of the Best Places on the South Oregon Coast

By Ron K |

Whenever we are in the Coos Bay Area on the South Oregon Coast, we make it a point to go to shore Acres. It's the site of a former mansion of a lumber and shipping magnate from the early 1900's. The mansion burned down nearly 100 years ago, but the spectacular grounds are a delightful botanical garden with a lot of roses and exotic plants and trees. From the gardens you can take an easy 1-2 mile walk that takes you to a a hidden beach, an old growth forest, spectacular views of the ocean to the south to Simpson Reef Wildlife Refuge. From there you can see huge numbers of sea otters, and wales (in season). If you hike north from the site of the former mansion, you follow some of the most unusual geological formations of the Oregon coast with many stunning views. The trail takes you to Sunset Bay campground, two miles north. As long-time residents of Oregon, we have explored the Oregon Coast extensively. These two trails are by far the best the Oregon Coast offers. Don't miss this opportunity!

Beauty on earth

By fondawarner@yahoo.com |

This park is one of the best places in our beautiful area. Excellent walking areas some paved and some not. Beautiful gift shop and gardens on site. From Thanksgiving through New Years there is an amazing light display with paved walkways throughout. Veteran admission is free with VA card. Great for photographers during king tides or whale watching during migration north or south.

Beautiful

By lvflower |

This was our second visit for the Holiday Lights, and it didn't disappoint. Beautiful lights, they are so magical. There are also cookies and cider for free or a donation. It would be nice to have some soft music in the background. The only reason I give it a score of 4 is the the wait (in your car) to get in. Our first trip was a 45 minute wait, this time it was 1 hour and 15 minutes!!! Wish there was a different way.

Took my daughter to see the flower garden.

By Dawnita S |

My daughter was impressed by the flowers that were in bloom. She really enjoyed looking at the gift shop.

Beautiful!

By rocking464 |

The grounds are beautiful and laid out in beautiful patterns. we enjoyed seeing it. Well worth the trip.

A very relaxing place

By Vernon G |

We visited this park yesterday There is a $5.00 entrance fee per car. We were impressed with the flower gardens. Beautiful roses as well as many others. It is kept up beautifully. There is a gift shop on the premises .They also have a couple of wheel chairs there for those that need them at no cost. On the way there are several places to pull off for picture taking, whale watching and plenty of sea lions to see. Last but not least it is a scenic drive there about 30 miles from Coos Bay, OR. Well worth your visit.

WHAT A SURPRISE!!!

By Mel L |

Beautiful grounds/plants and SPECTACULAR views of the ocean. Just breathtaking! Allow ample time to walk the grounds and follow some of the trails that run outside of the grounds. Not a blade of grass out of place or a leaf not tended to. Informative folks working in the gift shop. Plants from all over the world are in the botanical garden.

On the Cape Arago Hwy are lots of wonderful pull-outs for excellent viewing!! We saw 21 whale blows while we were at one view point (over an hour time frame).

Gorgeous

By Debra H |

The views were amazing, saw seals, the gardens were beautiful, it was fun hiking parts of the trails, seeing the area that had been the tennis courts was interesting.

Beautiful botanical gardens

By sagarlewis |

This botanical garden is sheltered from the wind and is a relaxing place to stop for lunch or a driving break. I wasn't there long enough to walk down to the beach from the gardens. I did see some huge yuccas with orange blossoms - very unusual compared to what we have in the Tri-Cities.

Shore Acres

By bruysmerrill |

Best viewed at peak bloom. The grounds needed weeding but we learned that the inmate crews which perform this task were not being bused to the park because of the Covid-19 protocols. It's still a stunningly beautiful shoreline, a place where photographers gather during large weather events (commonly called--storms) to capture images of towering waves crashing into the bluffs.

Great park to visit

By LaurieS3 |

This park is right off the ocean, and has a great grounds to view roses and rhododendrons, and other great trees and plants that grow in the area. Don't miss the Monkey Tree!

Go down the road and watch the various seals and sea lions.

A must see diversion off of 101

By abearfellow |

I've reviewed the Arago Park elsewhere but this deserves its own shout-out. If you have an extra hour or two on your trek down 101, definitely take a look at both the Arago park and the botanical gardens in Shore Acres. It is beautiful, and beautifully maintained. Great garden and beautiful trees all around. Visitor center is top notch. Definitely make a detour to see this and, if you don't want to back track all the way out, the cross coastal range road, the 7 Devils, is perfectly fine for getting you back on 101 going south

Stunning Park & Beautiful Holiday Lights

By Three333 |

We have been coming to Shore Acres each November or December for the last 7-8 years. The park is beautiful during daylight. The ocean and park setting is just breath taking. Then at dusk the magic happens. The lights come on and wow!! So many lights and so many colors. Moving displays and decorated Christmas trees from all around. We walk thru several times just to take it all in. Its fun to watch and hear all the little ones seeing it for the first time. They are so excited...
Thank you Shore Acres for providing us a beautiful family tradition every year.

Beautiful area

By Tina H |

A must see park. Beautiful view of the ocean and amazing water sculpted rocks. Great grassy picnic areas and gardens. Great plave to spend the day hiking around.

It was calming

By Susan R |

It was very nice some of the roses smelled so nice. I am sure I want t to do this trip the area in November for there holiday display.

Beach time

By Bobbie G |

I wanted a hike along the beach last weekend. My husband took me to Shores Acres. The day was warm and beautiful. When we got to the beach I was enchanted. We spent hours marveling at the rocks, the waves, the cave. When we left we went through the gardens taking in all the spring flowers coming to life. Very Zen way to spend the day.

Absolutely stunning

By Deanna D |

This place is gorgeous. We’ve been here twice now. One at Christmas time and now in February. It’s just beautiful. We want to come back in spruce summer.

Great place to view the ocean and walk paved pathways.

By Harts O |

The botanical gardens are beautiful. We went in the off season and it was still enjoyable. As we drove into the park, deer were standing near the road. On the coastline is an enclosed viewing glass building. It was cool and windy so the enclosure was a nice addition. Driving in you can see one of Oregon coasts lighthouses

COASTAL HIGHLIGHT!

By Linda C |

Spectacular coastal area with beautiful gardens! This was once the summer retreat of a lumber baron. Although the mansion is long gone (there's a gazebo lookout where it once stood), the really incredible sea and coast views remain, as well as the beautiful formal gardens. Be sure to stop near the gazebo at the scenic bluff and walk a very short distance to the edge of the walled cliff. Prepare to be awed by the crashing surf 75' below, the picturesque formations of the cliffs, the barking of the sea lions in the distance, and the beautiful blue Pacific. The very well maintained gardens, entered near the big gift shop, have hundreds of flowering bushes, including roses, and lovely trees, plus a 100' lily pond. The gardener's cottage is on your left. Very friendly staff. Don't miss this! We visited on a gorgeous sunny day, but I'd have no qualms going on a rainy day with an umbrella. It's worth it.

Nice place

By Julie B |

Beautiful day. Saw sea lions. Nice look out and close to other areas with beach access. Picnic areas and trails.

When you feel Disney Fun time is too big

By Partsman999 |

We visited the park, which was a private estate. There are many cultural events held through the out the year. 2016 say a boom in youth numbers we had Xmas year of lighted trees shrubs and imagination. 2016 had donations and the biggest display ever. 2017 bigger cost $5..

Took my mom on mothers day.

By Sunfire4u |

This place is gorgeous and a must see and since moving to the area I will be here a lot. The history of the gardens and the Simpson family is very interesting. Being this close to the very vast ocean and then walking the gardens themselves you get taken back in time a bit of when it was first imagined. Free to be there just pay a 5 dollar parking fee for all day.

Breathtaking

By undgrad01 |

Breath taking. The gardens are just breathtaking and the trails lead to beautiful places too. Well maintained and worth the drive out. Keep going to the point and you can see the seals and sea lions. Great chance to see wildlife and the grounds of the garden are easy to spend time in and enjoy.

Continuiung the brightness of the dark night

By Partsman999 |

This is my second visit to the State Park at night, after Thangsgiving, the event was quite amazing. Thank heavens for the new style LEDs lights, making so bright and brilliant with electronics you have lights that come to life. The park is run by volunteers and the lights are all donated by local and regional businesses. Well done.

Christmas Light display- must see!

By Keri |

Came to the Christmas lights for the first time tonight. They were spectacular! The whole family will enjoy walking around the lit up garden. Inside the gardeners house they serve free hot cider and cookies. Take your camera and enjoy the holiday season!

Lovely walk

By bexnate |

We hiked here from Sunset Bay and it was lovely. This time of year, the azaleas and rhodies were just starting to bloom. Best time is summer when the roses are in bloom but then the park is more crowded.

Woodsy park along the coast

By bwanderer |

Just west of Coos Bay, past Charleston, and you'll enter the first of three parks, this one is the second. Past Sunset Bay State Park, it's picturesque, woodsy, and calming. Continue through it to Cape Arago State Park, turn around and look north to see the Cape Arago Lighthouse.

Great Garden

By frankrO7410SJ |

Gardens were restored in the late 1970's. The plants are mature now but not maintained as well as it once was. Still, the garden layout is classic with a layout similar to the original Simpson layout.

Delightful surprise

By TravelinSuz |

We came through here on a lark and what a great decision. Reminds me of coastal parks in Carmel California. Great gardens, grounds and sea scapes.

Lovely gardens and park beach

By Jan A |

This was once upon a time someone’s estate. Now it is a state park. The gardens are wonderful and the beach is wild and rocky but stunning.

Beautiful botanical gardens & areas to hike

By dianewN6556IH |

This is a famous area and not much I can add. Great paths to hike around. Great views of the ocean waves crashing into the rocks. Beautiful botanical gardens & gift shop. Be sure to get to the back area where they have the rose garden! Clean restrooms. Most paths seemed rugged and not suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, however the botanical gardens and interpretive center appear to be. We worth the visit!

Worth the side Trip

By Bruce F |

This is an excellent blend of a classical garden, breathtaking overlook and scenic hiking. There are tidal pools that are easily accessible. Some days you might see sea lions. There is an observation building with informative signage if the weather is rainy.

Stunning geology!

By Helen C |

The gardens are beautiful with a rose garden, Japanese garden, and access to the beach, but the geology of the coast beside it is stunning! There is an observatory there with explanations about the family which used to own the gardens, as well as the geology and wildlife of the area. Admission is $5/day, but a 5-day Oregon coastal state-park permit is only $10.

Who Knew?

By Kari H |

We visited here in September. We heard about it and thought we would visit. We didn't expect it to be much of anything - wow! We were so surprised! It was absolutely gorgeous. So many paths and quiet spots and the roses! If you are down this way and like flowers and plants even just a little bit, you should stop by and smell the roses.

Small but delightful

By DebbyLA |

Rhododendrons bloom May and then Roses. All in a lovely setting. $5 parking fee. NIce views and clean bathrooms. Drive on to Cape Argo for views.

Wonderful holiday lights

By woostergirl |

We went there on New Year’s Eve and the light displays are world class. It was the 32nd year of the event and it shows. It costs $5/car which is very reasonable and includes a cup of hot cider and a cookie. I’ve been to Zoolights at the Portland Zoo in OR, WinterFest at Great America in Santa Clara, CA and this one was more impressive and classy (it really was).

Always a great place to visit

By Carol S |

On a warm day the plants and flowers are so enjoyable. During stormy weather the spray of the water against the rock is impressive. Nice gift shop too and informative personnel.

Great place to visit & great scenery

Beautiful gardens & shore line. Nice gift shop with wonderful items to remember your visit here. Visit during Christmas for a wonderful light show!

Must See the Botanical Gardens

By Laura T |

Really enjoyed the botanical gardens. We plan on returning during he holiday season to enjoy the lights!

A MUST-SEE!

By Virginia A |

No matter what time of year I go visit, this park is totally worth the drive from Medford. The flowers are breath-taking and the "background music" of distant sea lions and seals is amusing! Everyone should make this park a destination!

Such a treasure!

By Marie N |

One of our favorite places on the south Oregon coast - right in our own back yard! Beaches, cliffs, forests - trails all over to enjoy or spend time in the beautiful garden.

$5 cover charge and foggy

By Archie |

We couldnt see much as a massive fog set in. It was not worth $5. It makes sense if you are staying here for the day. We were hopping to different parts of the state park. We went to cape arago and sunset beach.

We revisit the gardens each time we visit the Oregon coast

By FoodieCdA |

We travel in an RV, and make it a yearly event to visit the Oregon Coast. These gardens are a "must-visit" place for us each time because they are so beautiful, the area so tranquil, and the experience one-of-a-kind.

If you have any interest in botanical gardens, gorgeous ocean views, having a picnic, and history of the area, then this off the beaten path park is the place for you.

There is a $5 entrance fee per vehicle.

SPECTACULARLY BEAUTIFUL!

By Roger M |

Our first visit to Shore Acres State Park after moving from California to Coos Bay, was in the late summer. Breathtaking views from the cliffs above the Pacific an perfectly manicured gardens that will rival some of the finest botanical gardens ANYWHERE! The story behind this amazingly beautiful place is a appealing as the area itself. A MUST VISIT on the Southern Oregon Coast...a gift shop and plenty of sites to keep visitors occupied during peaceful walks through spectacular gardens. Return at Christmas time for a light show that will definitely be the highlight of the holiday season!

Great Rocks

By Lijemtu |

Some really interesting and cool rock formations, different than anything we've seen on our trip down from Portland. Don't miss it if you're in the area

A must see when on the South Coast of Oregon

By papastorm |

I was raised in Coos Bay and whenever we had visitors Shore Acres was on of our first stops. If you have never visited this gorgeous place, you must treat yourself to this place. They also decorate the grounds at Christmas time and it's indescribable. Also, a must see.

Complex geologic features and very intense wave action combine to make a great spot to visit.

By peter l |

In rough weather, the waves breaking at Shore Acres are breathtaking. Two geologic plates are quite visible here in this subduction zone. Whales are frequently spotted offshore.

Beautiful landscape!

By jacklmg |

Just go! So many lovely flowers blooming! Meticulous gardens! Feast for the eyes! Take lots of photos!

Beautiful ocean views

By BrianH-XLS |

A must see if you have some time to kill while in the area. We didn’t see nearly as many seals out on the rocks as our last visit, but I really enjoyed hearing them barking in the background and watching the waves crash on the rocks. Lots of places to take great pictures and have a picnic too.

Beautiful gardens, nice hiking paths, great ocean views A hidden gem

By Peter K |

We stopped here on 8/21/18 and we surprised at how nice it was.
The gardens are very nicely done and great to stroll through. There are several different sections, including an oriental area
Several hiking trails follow the ocean (with views of whales, sea lions and seals the day we were there) and one lead down to a beach cove.
There is a nice gift shop which helps support the park.
The entry fee was $10 and can not be paid by credit card. When we were there the entry fee had to be paid at the gift shop.

Just a Great Spot on the Coast

By everythingmustgo2018 |

Get a good leg-stretch in with a walk though this amazing beach and gardens. At least 1 hour to see the gardens and some of the beach -- but you could spend much more time exploring.

Beautiful

By Sue G |

The gardens are breathtaking. Such a relaxing “walk in the park”. From the garden you can take the trail that leads around the beach. It’s a beautiful, easy walk. Don’t miss this place during the growing season!

Beautifull

By jrbryan |

The gardens were gorgeous, but the hidden treasure was the beach! Be sure and take the path to the beach! Clean, clear, great rocks to climb on and small tide pools.

Beautiful park

By Steve H |

Visited here in September so the flower blooming was winding down. The dahlias were beautiful though. Some roses were still blooming and a few others too. The Japanese garden pond had a LOT of algae unfortunately. Other trails in the park take you to a beach overlook and down to the beach. Would love to return here in the spring or summer.

Very scenic area

By mu51c10rd |

It was raining when I came by, but this entire area around Shore Acres is very scenic with great views of the ocean. There are beaches that look sandy, but I don't how cold the water is. There are seals playing around the rocks and some hiking trails to see as well.

Premiere Storm Watching - One of the Best In the US

By rosewood_ltd |

Shore Acres State Park is part of a complex of three adjacent parks, which also include Cape Arago and Sunset Bay SPs. Located about 4 miles outside of Charleston, OR, it is a gorgeous location to visit any time of the year and is an absolute "do not miss" if traveling the Oregon coast any time of the year.

But in the winter months, oh my goodness. If your arrival coincides with big swells generated by Pacific and Gulf of Alaska storms, you are in for a mesmerizing, awe-inspiring treat. There are few venues in the entire US which have a more spectacular show when the weather turns stormy and the seas rough.

Because of the unique geology and contours of the coast here, one can see waves breaking from the top of 80 foot cliffs, with spray reaching as high as 200 feet as the water thunders against the shoreline. Storm aficionados come from all over the country to see the spectacle. One can stay for hours, absolutely hypnotized by the surf. If you are a photographer, you will be on cloud 9.

For those with physical limitations, including the need for scooters/wheelchairs, there is a readily accessible viewpoint with a shelter about 100 feet from the parking lot.

Caveats for winter travel in Oregon:

1. If you are going to take advantage of the storms, you hopefully will be able to time your arrival ahead of actual landfall of the bad weather. The biggest waves can often precede the appearance of the foulest weather, so checking the surf forecasts for nearby Bastendorf Beach and the NWS forecasts for the central and southern OR coasts are your biggest allies. If you are already on the coast, pay particular attention to wind forecasts. There are sections of Hwy 101 which can be treacherous in high winds.

2. If traveling from the interior, particularly in central and southern OR, pay attention to the snow forecasts, particularly the snow level. The storm systems which produce the best waves are usually very large and can affect large sections of the state. There are southern sections of I-5 which reach 2000 feet of elevation and road closures can and do occur. Do not attempt to reach the coast when large amounts of snowfall are forecast.

3. Snow level elevation is also important for travel through the coast ranges. Assuming I-5 is safe to travel, Route 38, through the Umpqua River valley to Reedsport, has the smallest elevation rise and would therefore be a good choice if the snow forecast is down to 100-1200 ft. If you are coming in from Central OR, this is the route of choice.

4. Coming from Southern OR, Route 42 to Coos Bay is the most direct path to the coast. It is a more demanding drive than Route 38, with more elevation changes, twists and turns, as well as fairly heavy truck traffic. The road has been considerably improved in recent years and there are a good number of passing sections to help offset the hilly nature of the drive. There are relatively fewer such sections on Route 38, but this is balanced to some degree by the flatter and less winding nature of that road. It should be noted that the maximum elevation of Route 42 is around 1800 feet, occurring outside of Camas Valley. This may be a consideration when snow at higher elevations is in the forecast. If significant snowfall or freezing rain are likely, it is better to add the extra 60 miles of travel needed for traveling Route 38 and avoid any altitude-related issues.

Sidebars:

If overnighting in the area, consider staying in beautiful Bandon, about 15 miles south of Charleston. Gorgeous beaches and vistas are to be had and there is a good selection of accommodations.

Consider stopping in at Chuck's Seafood in Charleston - wonderful fresh, line-caught fish if you are able and willing to cook yourself. Lots of yummy snacks like salmon sticks, outstanding smoked fish and oysters to take with you for your storm-watching picnic. Special mention for their canned tuna and other seafood - great for edible souvenirs and gifts. You won't find better in any fancy specialty store, and I include the super-expensive imported Spanish/Portugese brands. Yes - they ship your orders!

Nice gardens, nicer views, don't miss the "sea lion hotel"

By Schlepperman |

The state park is beautiful, botanical gardens and ocean views. Very helpful staff in and around the park. Just south of the park there is a view of "sea lion hotel" as the volunteer ranger called it - a group of rocks not too far from the shoreline with hundreds of noisy sea mammals on them. Bring binoculars, or hope that the volunteer sets up telescopes as he did when we were there.

Even in Winter the Garden is Lovely

By Mary D |

Although spring and summer are my favorite times to visit this park, a recent winter visit was also quite nice. I had the opportunity to return here after being away for 25 years. My father and I walked the garden and the rose garden and got a preview of the Christmas lights. This is a beautiful place to wander about and if you head out through the garden gate, you can stand on the cliffs and appreciate the small cove that lies below the garden. Well worth a stop. Picturesque drive to get out there as well. A nice visit.

An Beautiful Surprise

By Di B |

We enjoyed a little more than an hour in this garden. It was in full bloom. Well laid out and easy to walk through. Gorgeous sea cliff views.
Be aware if you have dogs you can't even take them out in the parking lot. You can't take them out of your car at all. There are areas well away from the gardens they could designate for pets. First time I have ever seen anything so strict. Greatly limited our time there.

Most beautiful estate donated to Oregon with houses and excuisite gardens on the Coast with beach below

By Mary G |

The day I was there a wedding was taking place down on the beach. Best place to have a wedding! I actually went 3 summers ago in June. (The date range below doesn't allow me to go back that far I guess).

So Pretty!

By WestCoastGiirl |

I love coming here at Christmas time and seeing all the lights. Its also a great place to visit in the summer when the flower are in bloom!

A beautiful experience.

By ritamc75 |

I went in mid-May so not a lot was blooming. The gardens are laid out beautifully, and I would love to go back when the roses are in bloom. The rhodies were gorgeous. Trees and shrubs were well marked. Volunteers were most helpful. Don't try to pay your $5 at the machine. It doesn't work. Pay at the gift shop.

Beautiful year around

By almyt |

I was surprised to find I hadn't reviewed Shore Acres before since we have been visiting here many times over the years. It's our favorite spot on the coast. There is something blooming year around. There is a large wonderful display of Christmas lights in December. Unusual rock formations on the coast line and on occasion the wind and tides work right to make sea-watching a spectacle. Good hiking opportunities around the coastline here as well. Open 8AM-8PM. No pets.

Shore Acres State Park is a beautiful place to visit even on a rainy day! The gardens are beautiful, the view of the ocean from the cliffs are beautiful and the grounds are peaceful. There is much history Coos Bay, North Bend, Empire and Charleston of the original owner of Shore Acres. Louis Simpson built the large seaside home for his wife Cassandra.

Very nice place to visit

By TAEZZAR |

The grounds are unique, beautiful & very well kept. We enjoyed the photo opportunities in the garden area.

Visit a beautiful garden and an spectacular view of the ocean

By Marcia SW |

Teaching outdoor school to rural mountain students and bringing them to Shore Acres was a delightful experience. They loved watching the waves crash against the huge boulders, painting with watercolors n the garden, and buying souvineers in the gift shop. I have experienced their holiday light show with hot cider and cookies in the gardens and it was totally mesmerizing. Don't miss out on this experience; it is beauty at its finest. The history of Shore Acres Park and the Simpson family is informative and educational.

Beautiful

By mlambert0607 |

This was a very nice Surprise. There were so many creative lights strung all over the park, even over and under water!. The guest house served cider or cider to help keep you warm and cookies too. A nice gift shop but the prices we a bit rediculous. I found the same items on Amazon the next day for literally half the price. Other than that it was a great experience for only 5 dollars per car full

December nirvanah

By Cindy S |

take yourself, take the kids, the girlfriend, the dog (well behaved) but treat yourself to shore acres in December...you will never forget it.

Beautiful! Peaceful!

By lonil990 |

I've been here a few times but walking through the botanical garden is always a peaceful respite! It's such a beautiful place and the grounds are very well cared for! The gift shop is nice too! You must watch the waves crash against the fascinating rock formations! A sight not to be missed! Mesmerizing and powerful!

What's not to like?

By relayer |

Beautiful gardens, beaches and trails along the cliffs overlooking the ocean. We spent half the day exploring here and Cape Arago. It was worth the ride out to both these scenic parks.

The flowers rarely stop blooming here

By Mark G |

I have lived here for two years now. We come to shore arces when the surf is up to watch the churning sea. When the wind is cold on the beach it is often pleasant here. Finally we discovered color here during the winter....sometimes it is pretty gray but because of all the unusual flora there is something flowering that cheers us up. The only downer is no dogs. Our dog stays @ home.

Gem of the area

By arlened585 |

This park has very interesting rock formations and ocean views. The lava tubes and lava balls are something you don’t see other places. It also has beautiful flower gardens. The Capes area of Coos Bay is a hidden gem. We were amazed at all there is to see there. The cost is only $5 per car and well worth it. The garden area is large with beautiful rose gardens, all kinds of flowers, a pond with aquatic plants, and much more.

One of 3 beautiful adjoining state parks

By john b |

Shore Acres is one of the 3 adjoining state parks. The other two are Sunset Bay on the north side (campground and day use beach), and Cape Arago to the south (day use, hikes to the beaches and tidepools).
One of the best things about these parks is that they are well away from Highway 101, on a dead end road. You really feel you are "away from it all" here! At the Shore Acres part of the parks, the main attraction is the garden. Really lovely almost any time of the year. All decorated up at Christmas time, when not much in the way of flowers....

Worth the drive out to the cape

By DigginWA |

Make your way to this park for a surprising contrast between a formal estate garden and the wild coastline with pounding surf below the bluffs. This is the site of the Simpson lumber family's summer place and then year-round home, the first of which was lost to fire and the second to hard financial times. Nice gift shop with engaging volunteers ready to share the story.

Beautiful garden

By ritamc75 |

Only the rhodies were in bloom when I visited, but they were gorgeous. The garden is laid out beautifully with many interesting shrubs and trees, well marked.

Very unique and historical garden

By JC MC |

We stopped by during their holiday light display - over 350K of lights with motion activity with dolphins, whales, frogs and octopus. Great for kids during this event. We could tell that they have a full roster of plantings for year-round displays. Great gift shop with very fair pricing that benefits the upkeep with so many volunteers it seems to have.

Beautiful Gardens, Gorgeous Roses

By RetiredTravelerTN |

We had such good memories of our previous visit to Shore Acres State Park that we just had to visit again on our return trip to Oregon. The setting of house and gardens is lovely. The roses are gorgeous.

It’s a long drive off Hwy 101 to get to Shore Acres, but the drive also provides the opportunity to view offshore colonies of seals and sea lions at Shell Island from Cape Arago State Park. Visitors can also stop at a small parking area and walk a short path for a view of Cape Arago Lighthouse out on the offshore rocks.

Formal gardens and great coastal views

By David C |

I can't believe we paid only $5 to see these gardens. Located close to the ocean the gardens were beautiful in late May. We were lucky to visit on a sunny day with no fog. Great views of the ocean as well. Highly recommended.

Lovely views, beach, and gardens!

By katieX2667XF |

This park has it all! A gorgeous botanical garden with an impressive rose garden, a short walk to a beautiful, clean beach, and stunning views everywhere you look. Worth the small fee!

Beautiful

By kathy3249 |

Such a beautiful park. Gorgeous flowers. Thoroughly enjoyed myself. Nice walk to the beach area. The fee was very reasonable, 5.00 per car. Cute bunnies running around... We will visit again.

A hidden gem on the Oregon coast

By AdventuresofLisa |

We've been coming here for years and still love walking the gardens and seeing the variety of flowers and plants. Beautiful views of the ocean as well. We've seen whales from the cove behind the garden in the past. Close to Sunset Bay State Park.

So Beautiful!

By Robert B |

My wife and I went in early May, because of the abundance of different plants the garden changes monthly, if not daily. What a treat! Only problem is distance, would love to see it change.

Beautiful any time of year but..

By Cami P |

go at the holidays to see the lights!

Beautiful in the any season. They were setting up for a wedding and it would be a fantastic place to get married.

Green and lovely all year long but especially beautiful during the holidays when they put up thousands of lights.

Best wave viewing in Oregon!

By P. Hansen |

When storms descend on the Oregon coast, the waves can best be viewed from Shore Acres State Park. The overlooks are set up well to allow guests to feel the power of the waves and take spectacular photos. The botanical garden is simply amazing. And the guest store is spectacular, filled with unique gifts at modest prices. The staff who are there are friendly, helpful, and engaging. Be sure to allow enough time for a quick walk down to the secluded beach. It's breathtaking. This spot is worth a stop every time!!!

Beautiful

By Dianna F |

Great wave watching. Historical site. Many walking/hiking trails around the park itself. The garden area is gorgeous. There is always something blooming all year long in the garden. Private beach. Small "koi" pond. Has small bridge crossing over the creek that leaves the pond. The garden area is completely fenced in. The park itself is not. Public restrooms. Paid parking.

Wonderful Gardens

By Roger R |

Strolled through the gardens - although early in the growing year many plants were blooming - even a very few roses - impressive on how the gardens are kept up we saw at least 4 people working in the beds
Many trees and plants from foreign countries

Loved the flower garden

By buckeyebear25 |

We enjoyed the flower garden and also seeing the sea lions (or seals....I don't know my marine animals very well) in the water area.

Crashing Waves / Quiet Gardens

By Matty_Stuart |

Let me preface this by saying you can't really go wrong by visiting the OR coast.

However, this spot in particular remains noteworthy.

My time there was unfortunately rushed, but it still managed to be a worthwhile experience. As I mentioned, the coast is an irrefutably worthwhile journey to make, particularly if you reside in Southern OR. The South coast feels considerably less trafficked than the Central and Northern coast.

Shore acres offers to contrasting elements: the sea and a beautiful botanical garden.

Along the sea are beautiful rock formations and the opportunity to ponder our tiny existence as humans, how we fit into the grand scheme. Against the backdrop of the ocean we are mere dots, hardly even drops that make up the great blue expanse.

If matters such as these weigh to heavily upon you, simply turn around and walk back to the sprawling botanical garden. Although its pathways are obvious, it somehow manages to feel labyrinthine. One could easily become lost in the number of intricate floral displays and still manage to find something unique on a future visit.

You may encounter other travelers wandering the garden, but an unspoken rule causes everyone to speak quietly and simply be mindful of the surroundings. In comparison to the crashing waves, this space offers a quiet contrast.

There is still much to be explored at this park, but for now I'm satisfied with my first visit.

christmas lights

By simovskil |

went there and they have all kinds of different lights on display all in chistmas lights wonderful shows its very nice to see

Loved the Scenery

By Lisa O |

We watched the waves crash on the rocks for quite a while before taking the trail down to Simpson Beach. Walking along Simpson beach we were taking in the scenery and taking pictures and didn't even see the big seal laying on the beach. Then we walked back to check out the Botanical Gardens. Just beautiful!

Breathtaking Views

By Allison R |

This state park offers botanical gardens, whale watching, private beach and hiking trails. Great venue for your wedding & reception for 100 or less people. They also offer one of the most spectacular Holiday Lights Displays that I have ever see! Holiday Lights open on Thanksgiving night and run through New Years Eve. A Must See when visiting the southern Oregon Coast.

Great year-round

By Steve J |

This beautiful seashore park is amazing year-round. Gorgeous rocky coastline perfect for wave watching. Hiking trails in the coastal forest. Huge beautifully landscaped garden that is a destination for Christmas holiday lights. Lots of parking and a gift shop.

Whale watching was a surprise treat

By gingersnaps |

This is absolutely our most favorite State Park in OR. It is well maintained, the gardens are beautiful, bathrooms clean and the volunteers are helpful. The gift shop is not filled with the usual tourist gimmicks and the prices are reasonable. Today, a whale surprised us by swimming close to the shore. It will be a day long remembered!

lovely gardens

By Laura B |

Lovely, well manicured gardens. Fun to visit, any time of year, but in late April, rhodies and many spring flowers were in gorgeous full bloom. Not Sissinghurst, but not as far away, either.

The gardens

By Doug W |

While there are great views of the ocean, the gardens are why you stop.

We were there in early fall but the colors were far from over. There was lots of flowers still in bloom and it made for a very enjoyable stop. The volunteer gardeners are doing an outstanding job of restoring the gardens.

Beautiful Gardens Amazing History

By Jeff R |

This was an incredible find tucked away along the coast in Charleston. The grounds, history and gift shop are top notch. The scenery is incredible.

Holiday lights unlike any others!

By Brandi P |

We love going to see the holiday light display every year! If you go at 4 you can watch the waves and explore before seeing the lights at dusk and after. Best time to enjoy as much as possible in an evening! Visit the little garden house for refreshments and see Santa upstairs!

Beautiful!

By Joan J |

We loved this park. We walked to the observation building, enjoyed the history, and then continued onto the additional trails towards the beach. The gardens were beautiful and I could have spent the whole day walking around looking at the different flowers.

The gift shop had interesting items and was very reasonably priced. Art in the gift shop was very helpful about information about the Oregon Coast.

We will go back!

Wow

By The Ruppanners |

I've never seen the ocean at its most powerful as we saw it at Shore Acres State Park. The Pacific Ocean was pounding the shoreline, the seals were barking and the flowering plants were spectacular. Do not miss this Hidden Gem and Coos Bay.

Botanical gardens, Ocean views, Tidepools, etc. in a beautiful setting

By Dave L |

In addition to what I wrote in the title, there's also hiking trails, various animals you'll see and amazing crashing waves. Shore Acres and Cape Arago are really one large park than you can do in half a day.

Definitely a must do if you're in the area.

This State Park consists of beautiful botanic garden

By Michael T |

We got to Coos Bay not knowing this garden. It turns out to be one of the very best part of our trip to the state of Oregon. This park is worth of many more times of visits.

Take a good camera!

By Mike D |

This a special place, don't miss it! Large waves break spectacularly against a rocky shoreline producing amazing photo opportunities. This happens.up close and personal and you might just catch some spray! Best wave action in Oregon! There are beautiful gardens as well, with many events scheduled around them. The Chri lights display was the best I've ever seen!

Wy out of the way but worth it

By Robert G |

Driving up the West Coast this was recomended for a visit and it was well worth the effort to get here. The gardens and fantastic and the views are also. Highly recomend the effort to get here.

Mixed bag. No pets. Great view.

By willabbott |

This site is a mixed bag. It’s beautiful and an awesome coast line.

Cost $5 to park. However no one was at the booth and the self ticket station was out of order.

The major downer is it’s a big park and you aren’t allowed to let pets out of the vehicle. So no potty stops. No walking etc. seems like a disaster waiting to happen with someone’s dog dying in a car in the summer. We would have loved to walk our dog. She was not happy to be left. There is absolutely no obvious reasons to not allow pets out of the vehicle. Especially with parks on Both sides that do. I can see not in the gardens but everywhere else makes no sense.

The views are great. Best seen on a nasty stormy day. The story of the site is pretty cool for someone who usually doesn’t care about the history of sites like this. This one was intriguing and neat to know.

Mini Buchart Gardens

By Moira G |

Just came to see the holiday lights and was very glad. Beautiful and comparable to the famous garden in Canada on a small scale. Well worth checking out during the holiday season

Incredible gardens

By dbonds404 |

Don't miss this delight if you are in the Coos Bay area; a short drive to the coast. In my opinion, May would be the best time to visit if you like Rhody blossoms. Later in the summer for Dahlias. A truly unique park.

Be ready for spectacular views!

By bren2915 |

This must not be missed if you are around Coos Bay and North Bend. It's a beautiful drive with a number of scenic over-looks. The gardens of Shore Acres are an opportunity for a peaceful stroll through colorful beauty that varies with the seasons. In winter there is a light display.

Gorgeous!

By Keith L |

Unspoiled, clean, refreshing, natural. These are all words that come to mind in this park and other nearby state parks. They're very organized, uncrowded, and so naturally beautiful. Peaceful, easy to access, easy hiking trails. in other words, a great place to go and unwind.

Great place to relax and watch the waves crash in.

By aray213 |

If you are lucky enough to make it here when the waves come in the sights can be spectacular. They can often time top the cliffs that overlook them. Don't forget to walk through the gardens while you are here.

Shore Acres

By Strange Trippin |

A very beautiful place. Gardens are amazing and were blooming beautifully. I was told about the lights they put up for Christmas, and we will have to visit again in the winter.

Nice Variety

By JefCin |

I had read about the beautiful garden and I do agree, it is worth walking around. We had just gone to Victoria, BC and had gone to a really elaborate garden so this pales in comparison but it was a cute garden that you should definitely check out while you are there. From the garden we walked up a path to view the ocean. It was calming and beautiful. We drove a little bit in the car to an area where we could see sea lions and seals. As soon as we opened the door you could hear them. That was an amazing sight and sound for us southerners.

Beautiful

By Amber Roberts |

A wonderful place to see. Great views of the ocean and coastline. With different areas to stop at. Lots of chances to see the wildlife.

Spectacular Views

By Jennifer W |

If you want to see some spectacular views of the Oregon coast this is the place to go! Especially during a storm - it's amazing! Walking trails are easy for just about anyone. Lots of places to stop and rest. Beautiful gardens in the spring and summer and a magical wonderland at Christmas.

A fun -- but wet visit.

By rickh57 |

We came here to see the Christmas lights -- which were wonderful.

There was a storm coming in when we arrived and the waves were huge.

Stunning Seascape and Gardens

By AliceMariam |

The coastline is mind blowing! The waves are monstrous and come crashing over some of the most unique rocky shoreline I have ever seen. The walk above the shoreline always leaves me in awe and makes me want to study geology. I got dry weather which was wonderful for enjoying the trails. Recent rains had brought out some amazing Amanita mushrooms. There is a shelter to observe the crashing waves, but I did not need it. In addition, to the crazy gorgeous natural beauty they have planted a botanical garden which is decked with a stunning display of Christmas lights beginning the weekend of Thanksgiving. I loved the creative sea, forest and garden themed lights. This park is truly magical in so many ways.

So pretty, come here!

By amzdunlap |

This was one of the best stops of our week long trip. Breathtaking, award winning roses, lotus ponds, dahlias the size of your head. I'm in love.

Great Views Unusual Rocks

By zigglovers |

Great views and a covered observation deck. There is a path that leads to several observations. There was a really cool tree here. The rocks have rare and unusual wear because of the strong water.

Christmas lights

By Glen K |

Coming to Shore Acres was the best place our family visited during the Christmas holidays. It is by far the best display of Christmas spirit we encountered this past December. E plan to make this an annual trip.

Afternoon filled wth beautiful cost line and wild life.

By blc45reb |

The rugged coast line and wild life was fantastic but it was all but surpassed by the gardens. Why wife and I must have taken nearly 100 photos of the gardens.
This is an area not to be missed, words do not do justice to the coast line or the gardens.
I have great difficulty selecting only ten photos.

Beautiful views of the ocean.,

By krnchapman |

We stopped here on our way to Cape Arago State Park. This place was beautiful, and great introduction to the coast of Oregon.

Shore Acres Garden

By Carol F |

Gorgeous. The rhododendrons and azaleas were spectacular. Very peaceful place. The surf pounding nearby was equally awesome.

Spectacular

By imaginelove |

Visited in the afternoon and was amazed by the beauty of the surroundings. The botanical gardens were just spectacular. Highly recommend spending an afternoon here...

Don't miss this park, it's awesome

By Wandah F |

This is a great place to visit. It has a beautiful gardens, great view of ocean, and a great moon rock like area. All the areas are only a short walk on good ground, so it's easy. You will love it and only fee is parking. Has a great gift shop too.

Magical

By travel4funwc |

This place is just beautiful. The weather is crazy sometimes but it is a stunning place. The garden is not the best if your kids are crazy....

One of my favorite spots on the Oregon coast

By Diane M |

We are fortunate that we live about 25 minutes from this park. Love to visit. Some days the ocean is calm and subdued and others it is booming and explosive.

Great View

By Sherrie W |

Our friends took us here and it was really nice. It was cool but the view is worth it. We walk around some of the area and then walk down to the beach area.

Amazing Botanical Garden

By TucsonTraveller2 |

This is a place one should see. Acres of gardens. So many plants to see. Maintained beautifully. The Rose Garden was in full bloom. Very peaceful.

Beautiful sight to see and explore

By Fbv |

We've come here twice for the Christmas display in December the past couple of years. Its beautiful, well taken care of and just a sight to see. Love that they offer hot chocolate and cider (yumm). We've always had a good time coming here and hope to do it again this year.

Hidden Gem of Roses in a seaside location

By Erickroses |

We had visited Shore Acres on a late September day in prior visits to Coos Bay. Our adventure in June 2017 was blest with sunshine and warmer temperatures. I cannot add to the comments on the seashore side of the park - however the beautiful designed gardens were just coming into bloom. The early blooms on the roses in the formal garden were intense colors and had benefited from the seaside moisture. The big surprise was following the signs to the enclosed garden behind the Japanese koi pond to see the All American Rose plantings in full color. These would rival the test beds of the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park, Portland

Christmas Lights

By Sescenee W |

We really enjoyed the Christmas Lights. They were beautiful. We took some older ladies from our church. The ladies enjoyed seeing all the sea creatures and the beautiful animals. We enjoyed the yummy apple cider, punch and cookies.

OUTSTANDING

By Richard B |

Outstanding Christmas display. Over 350,000 lights made a prefect trip for our group of 17. They charge by the car so fill it up with friends and enjoy!

Wonderful!

By Andreea P |

Please do visit the Rose Garden here as well! And yes, do take the time to smell the roses, literally: any perfume that you might loved to wear ever will pale in comparison with their heavenly scents. Have I mentioned some of their names; Marmalade Sky and Cherry Parfait? :)

Oh yes, the coves, the vistas and the trails! A place that might tempt you to relocate to this area!

Quite outstanding

By Geoff R |

Although we visited during the festive season, we saved the lights for another year. There is just so much to see and enjoy in the daylight, and for a $5 parking fee, this was amazing value.

Wonderful tourist attraction for lovers of nature

By tam625 |

This park is a wonderful beautiful place to visit with a lot of history...the Christmas light display is not to be missed...our local volunteers do an outstanding job with lights and arrangements...

Family in town

By 359arlenes |

Went to Shore Acres to share the beauty of the Oregon coast with family from out of state. The garden is wonderful especially the rose garden. We also enjoyed browsing through the gift shop. Kudos to the friendly volunteers who work there and share their knowledge with visitors. Great experience in a beautiful setting.

Sea and gardens!

By FLOGROWNGIRL |

This is a wonderful stop along the way. This plays tribute to the lumberman and shipbuilder Louis J. Simpson who built a home on the cliff. The first home was destroyed by fire and upon building a second home during the depression it fell into disrepair. On part of the property is a lovely home with flower gardens that are absolutely beautiful.

Gorgeous morning in September

By Ginney E |

The botanical garden has a beautiful display of dahlias this season, plus much more. The morning dew and sun filtering through the trees offered photographic prizes. The ocean view was spectacular, too.

Beautiful year round views

By Janelle |

Shore Acres has wonderful ocean views and garden walks. There are different events in the garden during various times of the years. The Christmas lights in December is always beautiful. It has become a tradition for us.

Florida Visitor !

By Bob S |

Very nice area - Botanical Gardens were lovely - love the ocean - so many seals and sea lions - were amazing - high tide coming in and could hear them barking from being pushed off the rocks.
State does a wonderful job in upkeep to park after seeing so many parks in decline! One of the cleanest public bath rooms ever !

Unexpected Surprise

By 8abug |

We were driving down Highway 101 from Astoria and I happen to read on my IPad about a botanical garden in Shore Acres State Park by Coos Bay. It is a little off the path of 101, but happily we decided to take the detour. It is small, but what a delight! There is a charming gift shop as well. Please note, animals are prohibited outside of vehicles. There is a $5 fee at the entrance. Take the time to enjoy the garden as well as spectacular ocean view.

Holiday lights

By Tracy B |

Oh man the lights are amazing! I have told guests to the area I am taking them to see holiday lights and they are like whoopie... and then they see the park! Knocks you off your feet

Christmas lights

By mmtdaily |

I enjoy taking my kids out there to see the lights they add more and more. All though some nights their are long waits but it’s worth it.

Beautiful!

By crosscourtforehand |

We started our 3-day exploration of the coast here, finishing at Cannon Beach. This was one of the highlights - beautiful views, fun to figure out a route to climb toward the water on the unique rock formations, peaceful and varied gardens to wander through as a bonus.

Flowers in bloom

By shawn |

I'd been here a couple of years ago same time of year but the flowers were not quite fully blooming this time. However, the roses, rhododendrons, and water lilies that were blooming were lovely. You do have to pay $5 "to park". I did not do the walking trail near the bluffs, maybe next time.

Beautiful Views - Stop and Smell the Roses

By Veronica H |

The views here were beautiful and so were the roses. I was a few weeks late for the peak of rose season, but they did not disappoint. They were beautiful and fragrant.

Shore Acres from around the world aboard the sailing ships of pioneer lumberman and shipbuilder Louis J. Simpson.

By Sue R |

since its beginnings as Louis Simpson’s private estate, the plantings at Shore Acres have been designed to take advantage of the area’s mild climate. These gardens are designed to have blooms year around. The Christmas lights are the most wonderful display I have ever seen. This is a must for all. Good place for kids too.
Wait till dark to go through it but get there early as the Christmas time visiters can be numerous.
Plan to spend 2 hours at least, so much to see!

Two treats in one.

By Terry F |

This is probably my favorite stop on the Oregon coast. I did lots of photography. The flower garden there has many photo opportunities for flower photos. A short walk away from that and you are at the side of the ocean. That spot is well known for its huge breakers during stormy weather. A walk along the rocky area above the ocean offers some unique rock formations one can photograph. There is also a campground with showers less than two miles down the road.

F I L T H Y ... rich

By doublemdoublet |

Simpson was rich. Filthy baron rich – he picked an incredible peninsula because he loved gardens and the shore. Thank the lord his legacy remains. Stop here for a few bucks and discover his wild shoreline with sea lion islands and an incredible botanical garden that revels America’s best formal green settings.

Great visit

By David S |

The park was very nice as usual. We were also able to see a whale and calf just off shore and the whale actually watched us. The gardens were well maintained as usual and are lovely year around.

Wow! Great Christmas display.

By Thomas B |

We took friends to see the lights and it was just wonderful. Great static displays, and even better motion displays. Well worth the trip and $5/car entry fee.

Really nice gardens

By RC30319 |

Might not be the biggest gardens you have ever seen, but they are well kept and free (once you pay the park fee to get in). It's obvious that someone cares and wants it to be a showcase. Well worth the roughly 60 to 90 min it would take to visit. Be sure and hike the short trail to the beach for some really nice views as well.

Beautiful!

By Fdelidude |

Gorgeous Park right out of town!
Very well maintained and the views from the trails are amazing!
Off season and NO crowds!

Beautiful, artistic botanical garden

By RvnLinda |

The botanical garden is beautifully maintained and updated seasonally. By September, many gardens are spent. There is a lot of color, as well as mature plantings, all beautifully sculpted. There is a trail down to the bay and you can hear the seals and sea lions barking. It was too steep for my scooter, but we saw many people using it, including senior citizens. The work-campers in the gift shop gave us a lo of information and were helpful. It does cost $5 per car to enter the park, but it is well worth it. I would rate it a "Don't Miss!"

Christmas Light Display is Pure Fantasy

By Jeanier34 |

The Christmas lights that are on display are unbelievable! We have visited here several times at other times of the year, and came again because the weather and the tides coincided with our schedule.
The light display is open at 4:30 p.m. and you want to get there early as the parking is at a premium. Adults and children alike are going to enjoy this...such care has been taken to develop a delightful experience. It seems that everything is draped in Christmas lights, and the entire garden area is ablaze.
The pond is surrounded by decorated bushes, and the reflections are stupendous. Check for the frogs--not all of them are jumping--and the koi in the pond itself.
There is no fee for the light display. The state park itself has a $5 park fee; in the evening the entrance cubicle doesn't seem to be manned.
You can enjoy refreshments and a visit with Santa in the garden house, if you wish as well.

Beautiful and serene

By Karli036 |

We visited the park and gardens on a weekday when there were few other visitors. It was our second time there and it was just as beautiful as the first time. Rhododendrons, calla lillies, roses and other plants were in bloom. There is a day use fee for the park and donations are accepted for the gardens.

Beautiful morning hike

By sekhmet78 |

At 9am, on a clear day, I began my leisurely hike along the bluffs just north of Shore Acres. It was an absolutely perfect morning. There was no one else about, it was just me, the sound of the waves and all the little creatures that call the area home. I went on a recommendation of a friend who grew up in the area and I am so happy I did. It's a very easy walk, the trails are well maintained. There is only one area of a decline and slight incline, otherwise it's mostly flat ground. I would like to return during whale watching season, maybe during one of the fantastic storms as well to see the waves crashing on the bluffs. The botanical garden is also very beautiful with plants from around the world, I've never before seen a spiny rhubarb and it's fascinating! The rose garden is beautiful, even with most of the blooms past their prime, there were plenty of gorgeous flowers out. The bright blue hydrangea are still one of my favorites. All in all, a wonderful trip, alone or with someone special.

Shore Acres a must visit if visiting the Oregon Coast

By Scott Z |

Beautiful stop if in the Coos Bay/North Bend/Charleston area of Oregon coast. You will enjoy Flowers, Ocean Views (maybe whales) and hiking trails. While you visit Shore Acres, you should also check out Simpson's reef lookout.

Hidden gem!

By Sarah F |

Spent about two hours at the lovely park. Interesting history, views of the rocky shoreline, trails, beautiful pond and gardens. Definitely a don’t miss, in my opinion. Make sure you read the history I the little gazebo!

Picked wrong day for big waves

By oregonpoppa |

After years of wanting to go here to see the huge waves breaking on the rocks at the base of the cliffs, we picked a day when the sea was flat and even the seals and sea lions were sunbathing on the exposed rock shelf. Maybe next time...when we can brave the winter storms and get the photos seen in the trave guides.

Absolutely beautiful and well maintained gardnes

By barbiept2000 |

Most of the gardens are easily accessed by wheelchair, but there are a few small areas are not. The Christmas lights from Thanksgiving to New Years Eve are absolulety phenemenol and beautiful show case of our natural habitat.

Five stars plus

By Michelle R |

This place held me in awe, be sure to walk the entire ocean side as the view changes and amazes at each curve and angle, cliffs and waves stunning, the botanic gardens are free and just beautiful, the gift shop is large and more than postcards souvenirs, garden jewelry decor pottery etc

Wonderful Botanical Garden

This is a quiet, peaceful setting with beautiful plants and flowers. Very nicely maintained. Looks like they may have accommodations for weddings, but don't quote me on that. Nice gift shop, free parking. Plan on doing a bit of walking. I am limited but they have use of wheelchairs for those that need them.

Christmas Lights are definitely worth checking out

By JB. |

Visited Thanksgiving night to see the first day of the holiday light display. What a great experience for any age! The whole community is involved with sponsoring the displays which was cool to see. Cookies and hot cider in "Santa's house." And it only costs $5 (park entrance fee) or free if you already have your yearly state park pass. Oregon State Parks are THE BEST!

A Natural and Floral Wonder

By 858marca |

Much of the state park was originally the home of the ancestors of the founder of North Bend, OR, Asa Simpson. This and other land was acquired to finally become Shore Acre State Park that now comprises about 745 acres of land.

Shore Acres State Park has an entrance fee booth that is sometime maned or else uses an honor system for payment. Most of the area and exhibits are ADA compliant. There are restrooms at the parking area, and a combination Information & Gift Shop at the entrance to at he Shore Acres Gardens

There is a wonderful year-round garden, Shore Acres Gardens has offers visitors, year-round and seasonal blooming plants and flowers. The Gardens are comprised of the following areas: the Formal garden, the Rose garden, The South Rose garden, the Pavilion, the Garden House and the Oriental garden and Lily Pond.

Also included in the Shore Acres State Park are Hiking Trails, Scenic Vistas for Ocean Viewing, Picnic tables, and /Ocean/Beach access.

By itself, or in combination with the other State Parks and activities, Shore Acres State Park is a great way to get up close and personal with coastal Oregon. The Views are Spectacular!!!

Gorgeous Park & Garden

The garden alone is worth the visit - so much color! And now the holiday lights are ON! We missed them by a few days. Still a beautiful garden and the trail around the cliff and down to the beach is fantastic. An incredible hike.

Shore Acres—more than just a seaside garden!

By Th3HappyTraveler |

We visited on a cloudy, misty Easter Sunday & found we had the grounds and Simpson Beach almost to ourselves. Lovely formal gardens, Japanese Garden/Pond, many unique plant varieties (Monkey Puzzle Tree) not found elsewhere. Enjoyed watching the crashing waves at the beach—also saw deer & snails. Worth the $5 fee if you’re in the area.

Amazing Show

It was well worth the $5. I went for the Christmas Lights but got to see an amazing show of waves. Great place to go to get some great pictures.

Awesomeness in Coos Bay

By MarleyMe77 |

Hard to believe this exists in Coos Bay, but it does. And IT, is a full on beautifully designed and maintained city park, with lakes, trails, flowers, trees, ducks, and oh so much love planted and nurtured and growing. Awesome park that just goes on and on. There’s the Japanese bridge from the sister city, the quiet duck filled pond, the arbors with drooping blooming flowers, the majestic native trees, the divine little design elements from the gardeners! Great place to walk, hike, or just hang out. Fishing too. Picnic spots, ample parking, easy access for all ages. You just gotta go!

Christmas lights

We caught this on the last night. I'm glad we didn't miss it. The Christmas lights were lovely plus free cookies and cider. Will be back again!!

An unexpected rush of beauty!

By tlstrong2017 |

We were exploring the coastline, dipping into every state park along the way south to see the stacked rocks at Banden. We enjoyed the Shore Acres ocean overlook and only on our way out, we spotted the botanical gardens' stately columns and stopped to see what it was. We were soon intoxicated by the immense beauty of the gardens and spent two hours there. (I'm a photographer and could have stayed hours longer) but hubby was ready to go.

Coastal Beauty

magnificently kept gardens in an environment beyond compare. It is miraculously manicured. The rose garden delights the eye and the nose. If in the area, see it.

Stunning place

By Ken B |

This place is a hidden gem. Photo opportunities are everywhere. The sea coast is stunningly spectacular and the gardens are absolutely beautiful. it's a wonderful place for a walk, a picnic, a morning jog, an afternoon or sunset stroll, or whatever strikes your fancy. Spend at least an hour here!

Christmas at the Botanical Gardens

By Thomas C |

I think they were up to 800,000 thousand lights in 2019. Get there before 6 if you want to see it and avoid the crowds. Very nicely set up with a nautical theme this year. Weather can be cool but we were lucky with no wind or rain. Well worth visiting if your in the area. Stay at Sunset Bay State park (reservations required). Eat in Charleston. You won't regret it.

Beautiful gardens

By Natalie K |

Just up the road from Cape Arago State Park, Shore Acres has a beautiful garden and history about the mansion that once (and again) graced the cliff here. Cost is a $5.00 day pass, but as we watched a couple before us feed money into the machine and NOT be given a ticket, we (and they) decided to head up to the gift shop for guidance. We were told "not to worry about it"; not sure if the other couple was getting a refund or some sort of note for their windshield. In other words, the folks at the shop don't handle park fee money. We were there for probably 45 minutes and had no problem. Anyhoo, worth a stop if you are interested in beautiful flowers and another great coastal view.

Beautiful Spring Blooms!

By lonil990 |

I'm writing another review because my last visit was in October. A visit in May rewards you with many varieties of rhododendrons in a multitude of colors blooming all over the gardens! So spectacular for the formal gardens! The Japanese garden and lily pond was also gorgeous with blooming flowers! I love coming to this beautiful garden! The ocean was much calmer this visit but still mesmerizing to watch the waves crash into the fascinating rocks along the shore. If you don't have a parks pass, it's well worth the $5 to stop and wander through the gardens and pathways towards the ocean. Better yet, go online and order an annual pass for $30 that gets you in to all of the beautiful state parks in Oregon. You can print a temporary pass for immediate use!

Truly a Hidden jewel

By richard c |

We travel in an RV and have visited most major gardens in the western US. The one at Shore Acres is great. The main plants are dahlias and roses but there are numerous other bedding and other plants. Two caveats - there is no food service around so pack a lunch and they water the lawn heavily in the morning so bring some boots.

Amazing Christmas Lighting Display

By Susan B |

My parents now live in Coos Bay and told me about this display. We went early, and watched the sunset then went to the Christmas Display. Just magical. If you wait till dark you will be unhappy with the 4 mile line of cars of a two lane road to get in. Plan you adventure, it was so worth it.

Fantastic Views

By Yosemitesteve |

$5 to park but worth every cent.Plenty of parking.Spectacular ocean views in every direction. There are trails that will lead you to some amazing waves crashing into the rocks sending water high in the sky. There is also an enclosed viewing area in case of wind or rain.
There is a botanical garden too.

Spring Break Trip

Wow! What a large and beautiful area this park covers. Ample room to spread out. Picnic tables scattered here and there. Fantastic views of shoreline, waves, seals and well kept botanical gardens. We had a wonderful time exploring this area of Oregon.

A Decent Botanical gardens - Rose centric

By Craig H |

Free with Sunset Bay State Park fee. Nice pond. The focus is roses (not native). Small gift shop. Park Service employees were knowledgeable and helpful.

Beautiful but definitely off the beaten path

By eraestua |

There is a $5 fee to enter the park. There is a spot to look out at the ocean and the view is beautiful. Gardens aren’t huge but they are beautiful. I especially enjoyed the South Rose Garden and the dahlias that we’re blooming again. The gift shop was ordinary. There was access to a small beach but we didn’t go down there. The only downside is that it is down a winding and hilly road but the place was not overcrowded as so many places have been along the coast in peak tourist season. I would recommend this park to anyone who loves gardens.

Christmas lights

By meriley2015 |

OH my, the Christmas lights were gorgeous!! Lots of moving displays, create and easy to view.

This display was a community effort, many businesses and service clubs as well as individuals contributed to the effort. Approximately 450,000 lights!!!

A A Very Nice Surprise

By Robert G |

This is a park that has very nice grounds that incudes a beach area and gardens that include a variety of roses. We both enjoyed a relaxing afternoon strolling around the park. We could hear sea lions barking in the distance and the area around the pond is beautifully done.

Incredible shoreline views!

By Gina A |

We stopped at all of the overlooks and were mesmerized by the rock formations. There were thousands of sea lions and seals with eagles perched on the rocks - incredible. We spent hours just watching the wildlife and waves smashing into and over the rock formations.

We stopped here on our west coast road trip and were pleasantly surprised. The gardens were beautiful, a nice pond area, formal gardens, a rose garden area and lots of nice pathways - nothing to hard to walk for all ages. A nice little gift shop and there was no charge to the gardens. A nice break to a long drive with a car full of kids.

What a beautiful setting. Who knew their were so many varieties of Dahlia's? Forget roses. The Japanese garden was very nice, but all of the interior gardens were filled with amazing Dahlias. Don't miss out.
