Really interesting Museum on the Airport. I was born in the UK during the war and know a lot about it but totally ignorant of the role of gliders and the major contributoion they made, it was very humbling how brave the pilots were and the sacrifices they made.

This museum honors the World War II glider pilots who guided their aircraft into some of the most dangerous spots of World War II. They were the stealth planes of the war. Carrying men and equipment, they were a serious factor in many Allied battles including D-day. The museum houses a full size glider and a good number of exhibits and displays. Stop to see the video first especially if you are unfamiliar with the glider pilots. Good place for people of all ages to learn about a little known aspect of WWII.

I learned so much I did not know about world War II even though my father served in it and we had been on the honor flight to Washington DC. Go seem it when you are in the Lubbock area

The Silent Wings Museum is a can't miss in Lubbock. Depicting the troop carrying gliders of WWII. The reconstructed gliders and toe plains along with the mock up scenes of the Lubbock air field are very well done.

If you are interested in WW2 history, this is definitely worth your time. The 15 minute video is a must! The 12 year old grandson with me was only interested in looking at the exhibits (not reading all the titles) but he later accurately described the gliders and the part they played in WW2.

Our multigenerational visit was a success at the Silent Wings museum. Cool exhibits, great videos, a unique part of our history.

The price was reasonable: around $7. When we visited there were dozens of WW2 photos on loan from the WW2 museum, which made the displays even more interesting. There is a short film which gives you a lot of facts. I was especially interested to learn how the gliders were returned to base after their missions. There was an interesting display showing how flight simulators were invented. Probably best for teens and adults. There is a gift shop.

This place is worth the visit. Stay in Levelland and drive over for the day it's a great day spot for the whole family.

It's a great museum! There is plenty to see and read, so plan on a leisurely trip through the building. Certainly impresses with the size of the gliders used.

This place tells the story of the unsung heroes of the glider pilots during WWII. There is so much learn about here that is normally glossed over. It's worth the admission price if you enjoy WWII history or history in general.

My sons loved seeing and hearing how our city had a major roll in WWII. It was fun, interactive and started some good conversations.

My father was in the Army Air Corp his C47 troop carrier pulled the giders when he wasn´t dropping the Band of Brothers. On D day he flew 5 conbat missions he said it truly was the longest day. I was suprised to see how large the glider were. The fact that they dismantelled then reused them is truly amazing. Lot´s to see in this wonderful museum. Tons of WWII maps and interesting military information. Be sure to see the glider video it is well worth watching. Tears are shed and so it goes... Note If you go to the Buddy Holly Museum you can get a discount coupon for this museum.

After visiting this museum, I realized how little I knew about the usage and impact gliders had in the war. This was a fantastic exhibit with such rich information. Although my young kids didn't care to read the details, they still enjoyed seeing all the items on display. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Lubbock.

The museum is dedicated to and contains memorabilia about the giant wooden gliders that silently flew behind the lines in WWII Europe. Its pilots were trained at the Lubbock Airfield to launch and maneuver the silent wings for the element of surprise and relief. Located in the old terminal of the Lubbock Airport, the setting encourages all visitors to see the photos, listen to the stories, view the uniforms, and learn about the lives of the pilots sometimes forgotten -- they too are part of "The Greatest Generation." The museum is almost a reverent place.

We stumbled upon this exhibit while passing through Lubbock. It's easy to find, right off the highway by the airport. Very well out together exhibit showing the contribution of glider pilots during the war. Starts with a 15 minute video. We were amazed at how big the gliders were and all that they carried. You won't be disappointed when you see this. Fee to enter is very reasonable.

The Silent Wings Museum in Lubbock, TX is a must see for all WWII history buffs, like myself.
The museum is dedicated to the contributions of the glider pilots (hence, Silent Wings) that served during WWII. Lubbock was a main training base for these pilots during the war. There are serval mock-ups that get the visitor up close and personal with both the equipment and history. The displays certainly make you appreciate the contribution made by these individuals.
My hat is off (literally) to those involved with this museum - you have done an outstanding job in paying tribute to these great men and women.

My father actually pulled Gilders in prep for World War II and the Korean Conflict so this museum had special meaning to me. It has full gliders in the museum which are much larger than you would imagine. They can actually carry 28 troups or small bulldozers, jeeps and such right into enemy territory without hearing anything coming. They were used in many locations for a secret landing. My father before he died enjoyed talking about him being involved with gliders in preparation for the war. I really don't believe he ever pulled one during the wars but did a lot of training prior. He flew C47's hauling personnel, ammo, high octane fuel and Doctors and Nurses on R & R. He flew 187 combat missions over enemy lines but mostly in the South Pacific.

I only had enough time for a quick walk thru and the movie but this was so cool! If I'm back in Lubbock, I'll return for a real visit!

This is an impressive little museum dedicated to the glider pilots of WWII. It includes some extraordinarily interesting photographes of early U.S. and British glider prototypes, full-size and partial examples of glider craft, and an informative video of the short history of glider-bourne troop transport. Fascinating for a military history buff.

I love the historical memorabilia. This is a great a museum and local area attraction. Make sure to add this to your list of museums to check out while in Lubbock!

This museum is excellent. You will have a much better understanding of the WW2 glider program after your visit. The various displays and exhibits are well done and informative. Take the time to read over the exhibits, it’s well worth it.

The Silent Wings Museum brings to life an important part of American history that everyone will enjoy. A quick tour that is tastefully done with a great atmosphere. Go see it and enjoy a beautiful West Texas view, to boot!

This was an awesome museum. We didn't know about the gliders used in World War II prior to going to this museum. We learned so much and it was worth it. So amazing what they did to help win the war. Well worth a visit.
This museum was incredible. We knew nothing about the gliders used in World War II before our trip. We learned a lot and it was worth it. It's amazing what they did to win the war. It's worth a visit.

This museum is a nice tribute to the gliders used during WWII. There is a glider on display, as well as many military artifacts. The galleries are nicely set up. There is an audio tour available, but I did not participate in that. Worth a visit.

Cool museum which commemorates the actions of a not often mentioned group of vets. Admission included Buddy Holly Center.

This is an outstanding museum covering the history of glider operations in WWII. They had lots of photos and descriptive information on the walls. They had the nose of a CG-4 that you could poke your head into. A small tractor used to tow gliders around. They had displays showing the contents of a K-ration box, glider mechanic tools, survival vests, ration books and weapons. There were flight jackets with glider designs on the back. They had 1 of only 6 full size CG-4s on display.

Combine your ticket with a Buddy Holly Museum visit for a significant discount. Buddy Holly Museum is right in the downtown, so you may prefer to get your tickets there before going to Silent Wings.

I visited (finally! I live in LBB) sometime late last year. Interesting displays, oodles of history, and an appropriate setting for this unusual museum.

I live in Lubbock and shamefully must admit I don't go to Silent Wings as often as I should. I attended a most excellent program on Veteran's Day complete with a dedication of a historical marker, excellent speaker on gliders and their pilots, buffet and music. After learning a lot more than I had known about gliders walking around looking at the exhibits was so much more meaningful. I will be making more frequent trips there just to learn more. Watch for special events on holidays. The first time I ever flew it was from the building where it is housed, the former Lubbock Airport.

We had driven by many times & never stopped...I can't believe the amount of history we had missed all these years.
My son & I enjoyed all the exhibits & the short history movie. Some of the exhibits are interactive & very interesting. We learned so much during our visit.
No stairs to climb & it was nice and cool.

We had the opportunity to have as a guest speaker a POW from WWII for our annual company dinner. With the museum as our setting , we had a meal catered in the hanger with tables surrounded by gliders and displays from the war. Guests toured the rest of the museum prior to dinner and everyone thought it was a wonderful evening. We were able to seat close to 120 guests.

From ages 8 to 40 we were all in awe of the exhibits at this museum. This history we learned about was fairly unknown to all of us and ability to see the gliders and their parts gave real perspective.

Well worth a visit. Very well laid out and an interesting part of history. Excellent introduction video - see that first

I've heard of this place and finally had the opportunity this last weekend. Very impressive. This museum tells a great story about a little known community of aviators from WWII. These glider pilots and the Soldiers who rode to war inside them were a very brave group of young men. The timelines, photos and displays are very well done. It's pretty easy to find. I love the old DC-3 parked out front.

I confess...I'm a history nut. Silent Wings Museum tells and shows an important role of gliders and the men who flew them in WW II. Very educational and well worth a visit to this historic site where so many young men were trained to carry combat troops and equipment into war. We owe them so much gratitude and respect. This museum tells their story well!

Wonderful museum. Full of information on a little known branch of the military during WWII. Excellent exhibitions and films. Very well organized. Extremely clean. Enjoyable and educational. Highly recommend

Just a sweet day to spend with the grandchildren they see the old planes....... and wonder about the days gone by

A unique museum with information on an aspect of World War II that is quite unknown.

We went to the Silent Wings Museum after the Buddy Holly Museum. The Buddy Holly Museum offered half priced admission to this attraction, and I feel like we should have payed the full price, so we donated the other half of our entry back to the museum. The set up and the information was amazing. Watch the short film in the theatre and the displays are self explanatory . We were lucky enough to have a veteran volunteer talk us around some of the exhibits, he was lovely and full of info. The staff were really friendly and very helpful.

I am amazed at the sacrifice that these men made whenever they were flying gliders into enemy territory and crash landing Kama knowing they were going to crash while taking off. Trying to go at a time when there is a good narrator sometimes that you and have some Veterans there talking to the cisitors. Amazing story, amazing men.

This is a wonderful museum if you are a WWII buff like I am. This is a division of the military I never even knew about. What these brave men did is just awsome. You need to go check it out.

This is a hidden gem of WWII museums! We were greeted at the door by a WWII veteran who showed us around the entire museum and told us stories from his service. The museum was very peaceful and uncrowded (there were less than 10 visitors while we were there).

This was truly an adventure. There are some amazing displays with great historical writeups. Great old Military uniforms and equipment of various types to see and read about. If you are a military buff then this is well worth the small price of admission to see and experience.

It was a very interesting part of the war not many people know about. It was a big place, a lot to see, and many exhibits with displays. If you don’t want to read a lot, there is an audio package you can get. It’s out by the airport and easy to find.

Really well kept secret in Lubbock. If you are looking for a place to go take the family, your should try the Museum, it's awesome!

this was an amazing museum and really enjoyed it, really big and chocked full of great items, they have a HUGE window that faces the air strip so we got to see black hawk helicopters train, i highly recommend this place

See the cockpit of a WW2 glider that was used to ferry troops, weapons and jeeps to the battle lines. Good film. Lots of textual placards. Some WW2 uniform and weapon examples. Located in the old airport terminal with lots of windows facing aircraft taxiways.

This was an unexpected attraction we only discovered while visiting the Buddy Holley Museum.
Silent Wings is the only museum in the world that celebrates Glider Pilots and their gliders. It's very moving, well equipped with exhibits and very well supported. We visited while DDay was being celebrated and there were hundreds of visitors, a band playing Glen Miller Music and a C47 flying short tours around the area.
There were exhibits from many countries but mainly from USA and UK. The photographs were some of the best of WW2 that I've seen.
A very moving, nostalgic and carefully presented museum that so well represents these men who flew into battle encased in fragile gliders that may have been more dangerous than the enemy they faced.
Wonderful, thank you.

My father flew sailplanes and his first was a war surplus train like the one in this museum. I did not know much about the air core glider program and this told me things I liked learning. I did not expect this museum to take long but I ended up there two hours, a long time for me

Simply wow! If you’re a history buff, and you find yourself passing through or in Lubbock, make sure to stop and check out Silent Wings Museum. The curators have done a tremendous job telling the story of WWII glider technology and how our military employed the aircraft. I was amazed at the great quality of the entire museum, and the layout of the exhibits were very well done. The museum is very low cost, and free to military. The place is just a couple miles north of Lubbock on I-27, and just west of the Lubbock airport terminal.

My husband and I love silent wings!!! It was neat to see how the history of these planes had so much to do with Lubbock Texas and even Texas Tech.
My husband has lived in Lubbock his entire life and I have lived here for 10 years....I can't believe we haven't been sooner.

A must see while in the Lubbock area! Well organized and just a short drive from downtown, the museum is located in the old Lubbock airport.

The Silent Wings Museum was an eye-opener for me, as I had only heard mention of gliders in WWII. The museum is large, with great full-size dioramas and examples of military weapons, equipment, uniforms, all used by soldiers in the Military Glider Program. The short video about the program is very interesting and a perfect start to the tour. The fully restored glider in the last gallery really brought the collection together. A great experience and recommended for anyone interested in military history, World War II, or the history of flight.

First time here. Free parking in lot. Located near the LBB airport. This museum tells the little-told story of WW2 Glider Pilots. Yes, planes with no engines. There is a good movie and many exhibits with lots to read and learn. Note: Would not be of any use, and would be a waste of time, to take a child here who cannot read and comprehend. Preschoolers there were inappropriately touching and climbing on exhibits, despite signs to the contrary. Otherwise....Lots to see and learn here. Many well-displayed artifacts. Small fee to enter.

Very well done and interesting World War II and aviation history. It is an excellent museum. Audio tours available.

A very nice display of a little known aspect of WWII aviation. I've been to several aviation museums but never seen reference to the glider regiments.

I visited the museum in April. I was interested in the museum since one of the glider bases was near my hometown of Dalhart, Texas. While I knew that gliders played a role in the Normandy invasion, I was not aware of the other battles in which gliders played a key rol.

This was our first visit and they treated us very well. Everyone was very nice and the museum is very clean and well kept. I was worried it was not kid friendly but for a 6 year old it was!

The Silent Wings Museum at Lubbock airport is dedicated to telling the story of the glider program during WWII and is the only museum of its kind in the world. If you're interested in military history this place is definitely worth a visit. The museum is quite spacious and the exhibits are laid out extremely well. When you see how flimsy the planes were, you appreciate the courage of the pilots and the men who flew in them. The Americans and British co-operated very closely during the war to develop and fly gliders and there is a nice hat tip to that relationship. Be sure to watch the short film presentation about the gliders which contains some rarely seen footage taken during the war.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and definitely recommend this museum!

From the literature you might think this would be a small and underfunded place perhaps, but that is not at all the case. This museum is well done and really honours the story of the men and machines to do with the Glider squadrons.
Recommended!

This is a wonderful museum that focuses on the use of gliders during WWII. Really interesting stories and artifacts. Short film to watch. Note that once you pay for admission here, you get half off admission at the Buddy Holly Center.

Really well done and laid out museum covering a lesser known part of World War 2. There are plenty of displays and information and you could spend about 1.5 hours there.

The Silent Wings Museum is a must see attraction for aviation or history buffs visiting Lubbock. Not only does the museum offer several glider aircraft on display, it also has displays covering various other World War II topics. A very well kept and maintained museum dedicated to a relatively unknown aspect of America's past military operations.

This is for some an unknown part of WWII history. There is a nice collection of memorabilia from many countries and full scale mock-ups and original equipment. There are some very good videos to watch that chronicle some of the training and service of the gliders and their pilots. A fairly short trip and you could spend quite some time there if you wanted, well worth the visit.

This museum is well worth exploring. You will be amazed at the exhibits. We did not know that they used glider planes in WWII. These were amazing people flying into combat with no engine. The movie is excellent. We normally do not frequent war museums however this one is amazing.

We went to the glider Museum and I thought it was done very nice period learned a lot about the history of the gliders in World War II. It is not expensive to get in. As an added bonus they had a display on the Challenger disaster which was very interesting and informative. I highly recommend going to this Museum. My wife

This museum is housed in the old airport terminal building which is a perfect setting for it since the Lubbock airport was a key base for training glider pilots in WWII. We had no idea that roughly 10,000 gliders were used in the war and how important they were to several major campaigns. If you think flying a wooden box behind enemy lines isn't scary and brave by itself, wait until you see the videos of gliders being "snatched" by low-flying planes so wounded soldiers could be taken away to safety. The glider pilot lucky enough to be picked up safely still has to land his flying box back safely when he gets back to his side of the front.
The museum exhibits are excellent, albeit a little random in order and a bit repetitive. However, I don't know of any other place where you can see a restored CG-4A glider in nearly mint condition. Make sure to see the video first, it is excellent and puts it all into perspective.
Your admission here is reciprocal with that for the Buddy Holly museum; we thought this one was better by far.

This place is awesome! We were very impressed with all of the displays and information that was given for the artifacts. This place is definitely a hidden gem!

I always appreciate every one of our service personnel, no matter how or when (s)he served. Thank you all. This museum was great for it's historical information about a critical, and yet little known, group of servicemen who served during WWII. It was both interesting and educational. My parents were alive during WWII and they didn't even know how much the glider program contributed to the war. This is a must see for anyone who loves history, is fascinated by WWII or who just wants to understand and appreciate another of the many sacrifices that our military personnel have made through the years.

While visiting relatives in Lubbock, TX and being a big World War II history buff I had to make a visit to the Silent Wings Museum. I was not disappointed. I learned much about this little known very dangerous and short-lived part on the army airborne. I found the introductory film & short video vignettes throughout very informative and the exhibits nicely laid out and entertaining. In my opinion a must visit if you like WW II history.

Gives a much broader and more comprehensive view of the role played by gliders in WWII and the courage it took for the men who flew them.

I finally worked in time to visit this museum and enjoyed it very much! It was at the old Lubbock airport terminal and that too was fun to see. I thought it was interesting and informative and definitely worth seeing.

This is an incredible museum to visit. We learned about a part of WWII history that we really were not aware of. It's well organized, has many interesting exhibits, and was not crowded.

Do not miss this treasure! Gliders were used during WWII to bring heavy payloads to the front line. I'm not a history buff, but this was amazing. What brave pilots and then, after they glided to the drop area, you learn how they got them home. Interviews with the pilots and even a glider is on display! Looks like the Museum took over the old Lubbock airport and did a stunning job--very professional--of making the space work so well.

Gives lots of great info about the glider program in WWII. Something most people probably don't know much about. The exhibits were very well done. The museum is by the airport and has nice facilities. Short film available to tell about the use of gliders and the background about the program.

We stopped in after getting a free admission with our Buddy Holly admission. What a great little museum that tells about the bravery and heroism of a little known group of WW II pilots. Well done and not to be missed.

It was very interesting to learn about all the planes and many other things from the service men and women to just what was happening in the world at that time

This beautiful facility is very well done. Skip the Texas Tech museum and go here!

If you are a fan of WWII or aviation, this museum will really speak to you. The price is reasonable and the quality is very good for a museum of its size. Time frame to explore it is approximately 1-2 hours depending on how much you read.

I never realized how much gliders were a part of WWII before visiting this museum. I only thought they were used on D-Day. The museum sits on the actual training bases from that era and is filled with artifacts including the gliders and equipment used during that era. It is worth seeing for anyone passing thru Lubbock, TX.

The Museum made an impact before we even entered the doors. Easy to get to, and park. Walking up we appreciated the air traffic tower. And when you stand in front of the building and plaque the acoustics are amazing. Just like you are mic'd.
Inside staff are helpful and gift store reasonably priced.
The displays including uniforms, planes and info panels pull you through to an amazing great hall. The hall has a fantastic view of the airfield. And is filled with gliders and trainers.
Recommend a trip.

This is an interesting part of our history in which gliders played an important role in the support of our troops during World War II. The displays are great and the old C47 (DC3) at the museum is exactly like the one I flew down from Lubbock to San Antonio when I entered the Air Force years ago.

This is a great place for the whole family. It is all about the glider program during world war II. It is a wonderful facility, well lit and wide open. It is safe for kids and has great staff and lots of free parking. The "extra" programs that are presented on and around holidays with military significance are great with live music, costumes, and sometimes plane rides. It is a good reminder of one of the effort made by the "greatest generation" to help us keep our freedom.

Wow so glad we went there. Lots of exhibits and historical information. Yeah Lubbock for having such a treasure.

A stupid place was all we saw was some old people and some old cracked up "artifacts" do not recommend at all!

Nice little place. I enjoy history and learned some facts I'd never heard before. I recommend spending about two hours going through this museum where you can see the different displays and models relating to aviation on a self-guided tour. Watch the video about gliders and the dangerous jobs they performed in the war. The fact that they could tow more than one glider at a time and made a system to pick up gliders from the ground amazed me. A must for history or aviation fans. There is a small gift shop and the staff is friendly.

very educational and is an incredible museum to visit. to learn about a part of WWII history. It's well organized and detail oriented.

A "must see" in Lubbock! We loved it! I had no idea what a glider plane was or that it was used during WW 2 . Do not miss this! It is so well done and informative. The highlight of Lubbock.

This highlights the glider pilots and troops who flew in the gliders during WWII. There is a full size glider, a great video presentation of the gliders, and diorama's of various elements. We spent about 2 hours seeing everything.

I live in Lubbock, but had never visited. When my brother and family from Iowa came for a visit we thought it was a perfect opportunity. From kids to adults, the museum was informative as well as exciting to see. You don't see movies made too often of the glider pilots and what sacrifice was made by them, but it was great to see it in person. From the errors that were made as well as the successes, the stories told were enthralling and to be able to have actual equipment that was used only enhanced the experience. The history lesson told was one we shouldn't forget.

I had no idea gliders were used during the war. I was amazed during the film to learn the history and the sacrifice that was made by so many. Everyone will love this museum.

Visited this museum with a family member born during WWI, so he added special insights to the tour. Very spacious with displays to appeal to all ages. Gift shop has something for everyone. Information Desk was most helpful in providing a wheelchair for my comfort as well. Would visit again.

The Silent Wings Museum pays tribute to a significant group within the military during WWII, but a group that I never really heard of before my visit. There were a collection of old photographs from WWII on display from New Orleans which was rather intriguing, but go fast; it's a limited time display and photos will return to New Orleans shortly. The museum offers a video on the history of the gliders and aircraft used in WWII and then has static displays of the various aircraft that were flown. Great for aviation lovers and families!

The museum is very complete re WWII gliders. It's here on the (remote) Llano Estacado because the majority of WWII glider pilots were trained here. First-class displays, including several partial gliders and one whole one.
(There is also a reconstituted glider and in St. Marie L'Eglise in Normany).
Take exit 9 off I-27, and it's within view. The Google map on my smartphone erroneously took me to the current Lubbock Airport terminal, where you won't have a clue. Allow an hour to 90 minutes. At this time it doesn't open until 10 a.m., so don't arrive before that.

I learned a lot more than I expected at this museum. It contains many artifacts from WWII including a complete glider. I found it very interesting and well laid out. Can be viewed in an hour or so.

We saw a B17 flying around during our last day in Lubbock. When we were leaving town we could see the plane sitting at the airport / Silent Wings airport area. We jumped off the highway to investigate. They were offering tours of the plane ($10?) I can't really remember. It was nice to hear the stories & information about the plane. We felt lucky to stumble on this. We want to go back & see the museum. From what we could see, everything looked awesome. We will go back!

This museum is the only one of its kind in the entire world. If you are going through Lubbock you need to see this place. They have the only existing G4 Waco WWII glider. The displays and life-size dioramas are soooo cool! Go see this museum.

Every child and adult should visit this museum as there is so much history that is shown here. Better than reading about it in a book. It is a must see for every one in Lubbock and also visitors.

Tremendously enjoyable military museum of WW2 memorabilia. Located on the west side of Lubbock International Airport, just off I-27. It is housed in the former main airport building. My first impression was "Holy Cow", what a testament to the glider pilots of that war! The many exhibits, and mock- ups, were very professionally done. My favorite area was the exceptional weapons display. From the moment you enter the facility, you are transported to the 1940's, and the education is well worth it. Well done Lubbock, I salute you....

great history on gliders use in military history; paid attention to details in restoration and I was able to chat with veterans on the premises that live out the history.

so inspiring! The stories hit me like the wind and melted my heart all at the same time. Much love and respect to all of the WWII vets

The exhibit is not much, the general video in the theatre does provide the summary of what it is. the exhibit gives a bit more detailed on the physical item, the additional info in the specific exhibit is ok. If you are interested in WW II stuffs & do spend 30 minutes to 1 hour here.

This is a very good little museum, easy to get to, right off the Highway. It is affordable, and can be combined with other attractions. There is no other museum like it in the world, and I suppose that is because Lubbock was one of the few places where glider pilots were trained. The amount of captured memorabilia is impressive, I saw stuff there I have not seen in any other museum in the world. There do a great job telling their story. Very Well Done!

We live in town and had never visited the Silent Wings Museum. We had some family come in town and took them (2 60+ adults, 1 40 year adult, 15 year old, 12 year old and 9 year old). There was something for everyone. We enjoyed the "preview" film that gave you a general idea of the role the glider planes played and were amazed at the extent of the displays and memorabilia. What a rich heritage. Truly a treasure in Lubbock, TX!

I was very impressed with displays and information about the world war two glider pilots ,and their role in helping win war, definitely a good place to stop, interesting even if not history buff, great helpful staff, traveling exhibits from time to time,

Wonderful museum - did a great job of telling the history behind the use of gliders in World War 2.
I have been to several other CAF museums and didn't know they had one dedicated to gliders. Exhibits were very well done and very informative.

Sometimes a small museum, with a narrow focus, can do far far better than a larger museum. That’s exactly what these fine people do. Excellent facilities, great staff, exhibits are well done, well organized and tell a compelling story. Very much worth a stop for history people, aviation people etc. Suggest also taking younger generations to show them what the Greatest Generation did.

Ever heard of the gliders and their assistance in WWII? That story is told at the museum where all of the pilots trained for them. An amazing story with actual pieces of equipment, gliders, guns, and even a jeep that was carried in a one of the gliders.

Located in between airport and highway by the aero club hangers and NG armory off 27. But wonderful little museum with quality exhibits. Free to military also!

I never knew we used glider planes during WWII and this gave me an entirely new perspective. Small place but enjoyable and I learned a lot. Older children recommended.

Lots of well presented information on the US glider operations. The film theatre was a good place to start and then the static displays filled in the details. You can take photos in the museum so another bonus.

If you are heading to see the Buddy Holly museum you can visit this on the way back to Amarillo if that is your route. We were offered a free ticket to this Museum when we visited the Buddy Holly Museum. I didnt know anything at all about the role gliders played in WWII but I do know now. This is a very well done Museum.

Wow!!!! We learned so much at this very well done museum! Very interesting in the role that gliders played in WWII. The details were incredible.
We would recommend watching the video first and then go through the exhibits.
You can get half off the admission if you visit the Buddy Holly Center first.

We take small over night trips to Lubbock all the time I have two boys and they love the sent wings museum. It has so much history in one place not only amazing exhibits with playing but also a theater with videos about wars. We spent so much time just walking around over and over its so much fun and educational at the sametime for only $1 a person.. a much do for people living in or visiting Lubbock tx

Great exhibits with actual WWI & WWII relics. Some interactive exhibits. Admission fee is very reasonable. The planes and other equipment were really good to experience. This museum is quite the find and a well preserved history lesson for all ages.

An excellent way to remember, refresh or learn about the training grounds for the "D" day gliders. Drop in for a few minutes and leave a few hours later with a memorable lesson in U.S. history.

I had no idea what a glider plane was until I visited the Silent Wings Museum. What a neat part of history to learn about! There was a LOT to read- I did not read it all, but I did stop and read some very interesting stories. The bicycle story, the blood chits, the opportunity to look in a full size glider- the rope! I loved it.
I could not get over the low cost to get into the museum- a discount was applied since we did go to the Buddy Holly museum prior to this museum.
Thank you for this opportunity to come to this well laid out museum and breathtaking room that opened up to a real glider and planes.

This museum is owned by the city and located in the old airport terminal. It is well done. It is located in Lubbock because a critical part of the glider training program was based in Lubbock during the war. The glider service is a regularly overlooked but critical part of the success of the US during the war once the bugs were worked out. Anyone that is interested in WWII should have this excellent museum on their bucket list.

I thoroughly enjoyed what was my second visit to the Silent Wings museum, my first being in 2021. Both experiences were fascinating. A vast collection of weaponry, uniforms, and equipment are on display. One does not need to have a strong knowledge of World War II to appreciate the sheer bravery of the glider troops. When you look at the wooden gliders that transported these soldiers into battle, you get a feeling of the guts and dedication to duty they possessed. I highly recommend this museum to anyone interested in the military, World War II, and American history.

The 30 minute movie was amazing and really opened my eyes to what these forgotten glider pilots accomplished in WWII. Also, the static display gliders were in great condition and really cool to see in person.

The museum was a little hard to find but very informative. So little has been said about the glider program of WWII but it contributed a lot to the final phase of WWII. The museum is well appointed with many pictures and has a actual glider. This will add knowledge to any WWII buff plus it is interesting to see how the pilots were trained and all the problems they would face after cutting the tow rope from the pulling plane.

This museum does a great job telling the lesser known story of the glider forces of WW2. The story is complete with as little or as much detail as the individual museum goer could want. The artifacts of the collection make it easy for the visitor to understand the story and how amazing the acheivements were of this group.
Don't miss it. Just turn right when you get to the freeway as you exit the airport terminal and spend a couple of hours learning about this unique history at the beginning of your visit to Lubbock.

Must see!! We learned so much about these brave American Heroes in WWII!!
Very well done and informative museum on our Silent Wings Infantrymen!!
Amazing what these Glider Pilots sacrificed to win the War!!

seeing the video explain the heroism our soldiers displayed was amazing. Over 1/3 of those that piloted the gliders died. It is truly something that all kids should see and understand the scarifices that have been given for our freedom

I love taking the family here once a year. Very fun to look through their exhibits, especially when they have the C47 offering tour flights! Highly recommend.

Well spent afternoon.. The exhibits are great and the museum is very clean and organized. I will go there again soon

I have done a great deal of reading about WWII so knew of the gliders. Learned a lot about the museum I did not know. Knew they were used in D-Day but they were used elsewhere. They have a glider and you can look inside. Lots of interesting information.

I went to an Employee Recognition being held there and decided to use my time to look around, it was AWESOME and very Interesting, a "must see Museum".

It’s a small but okay museum for the history of glider program. Good for who likes history, especially World War II. Somehow my 11 years old boy liked it!

Wonderful History Journey - Back to WWII. Gliders, uniforms, equipment of the WWII era. Reservations can be made for a ride on a WWII era bomber. Clean, weill displayed exhibits with helpful staff.

The Silent Wings Museum, is a museum dedicated to the history of Gliders used in World War II. The Lubbock airport was used as a training base for the glider pilots. It was really an awesome museum that was very well designed and looked new. They had great exhibits and an adjoining room with actual planes and life size replicas of gliders. This room contained one wall of all glass that overlooked the Lubbock airport and tarmac. The entire museum, from the exhibits to the building itself was very well designed and informative. It was very interesting to have a museum dedicated to a specific item of World War II that you don’t hear about often, Gliders. As an added benefit, as we purchased our tickets they told us that if we could take our ticket stub to the Buddy Holly Museum and get half off admission.

We spent about 5 hours here enjoying the in-depth information provided about the WWII glider pilots and program. We already had some familiarity, but this museum provided incredible detail that makes you want to learn even more! Really an outstanding tribute to a little known segment of the Army Air Force.

We went here because of the good rating, however I had no special expectations. I was surprised, however, because these gliders were much larger than I had thought them to be. They even carried cars. And I was amazed by the courage of the pilots and soldiers.
We used approximately 1.5 hours. I guess you will need more time if you have a spesial interest in planes, and a bit less if you just want to have a quick look.

The museum tells the history of the WWII Military Glider Program. They have a fully restored CG-4A glider on exhibit as well as stories from the Glider Pilots as they flew these huge cargo gliders into the combat zones. Their exhibits do an excellent job of describing this WWII program that many people do not know anything about. The movie is excellent and helps explain how the gliders helped the war effort.

We visited the silent wings museum and were blown away. We had never even heard of these guys. The video was very informative and the items on display showed just how skilled The fabricators of these machines were. The men who were transported in these incredible machines must have had enormous faith in the pilots. I know some didn't make it but those who did were very brace. Thanks for expanding our knowledge.

We recently went to this museum. We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of items to view. It is very well laid out. The short video at the beginning is very good and helps you to understand the mission these pilots carried out.
There was a volunteer veteran there when we went and he was so nice and accomodating. He really wanted to share his love of the museum.
The ticket is also good for the Buddy Holly Museum. Even with our musical sons with us, the Silent Wings museum was much more interesting to them.

We enjoyed visitng the museum and learning about the role of gliders in the military. Also, our admission ticket from the Buddy Holly Museum also gave us free entrance into the Silent Wings Museum!

Absolutely had no idea about the glider pilots during WWII. Wonderful exhibit and history. The movie explains their history very well and puts into perspective what they did for us during WWII. Highly recommend.

I was going to wait in the car while my husband went through this museum but he came out and got me because he said there were many things I would like to see AND he was right!

If you have a son who loves planes, like I do then this is your place. My son is three-years-old and loved this museum. It's a nice gem I found from living in Lubbock. Students can get a discount and the gift shop has tons of airplanes for kids.

I surprised my husband (he's a historian) with a visit to the Silent Wings Museum and I even surprised myself when I realized how much I enjoyed it as well! We loved the short film and enjoyed getting to see all of the planes in person. Really puts things into perspective. The staff was very friendly and there were even war vets walking around that my husband got to visit with. I recommend this to anyone who loves history.

Out front is a WWII plane used for dropping US Airborne troops and pulling glider planes. Inside is a small movie theatre showing WWII glider and various other WWII actions. There are many relics from WWII as well as a restored glider plane. All in all incredible interesting.

Dedicated to pilots who flew troops, cannons, and equipment into invasion sites in Europe and the Pacific. You come away wondering if you would have the courage to do the same thing! Very interesting dioramas and lots of military equipment. An actual Waco glider is on display as is an under-reconstruction Horsa. Easy access from interestate and airport. Battered C-47 out front. Been to this museum several times and it is always of interest.

This was a very nice museum with great history! Our family enjoyed the visit and the staff working there were very helpful.

Spend as much time as you can spare! Irrespective as to how much knowledge you might have on the WWII Glider program prior to your visit, you will definitely learn much more. The displays and full size dioramas are well done, and bring you into the story. You will see Jeeps, howitzers and even a small bulldozer - all carried by gliders into combat zones.
Included as extra to the exhibit is a great display on firearms used during WWII - including a British Sten and a German Machine Pistol. There are many war souvenirs displayed - some quite rare.
Start your visit with the 10 minute movie.

This unique museum dedicated to the glider service during WWII is well worth your time while in Lubbock, TX. Displays provide a detailed history of the glider service and its contribution to the war effort. There is a full size glider and other training aircraft inside the museum. Several kiosks give visitors the opportunity to learn more about pilots, the aircraft and their missions. Video recorded histories feature actual glider pilots who flew combat missions. Don't rush thru this museum, plan to spend a couple of hours, taking it all in.

A must when visiting Lubbock, takes 2 to 3 hours
This museum is about the glider pilots in WWII and really tells a story. exhibits are great!

The Silent Wings Museum in Lubbock, Texas is a must see. I was not familiar with the WW II Military Glider Pilots and all they did during the war.The museum offers a wonderful documentation in pictures and video of the glider program, as well as memorabelia and actual gliders used during the war. This was a very well spent afternoon. I came away with a huge appreciation and respect for these men who took the "one way ride" in the glider in order to help in the war effort. Do not miss the opportunity to see this museum. A true gem.

Great museum, in a fabulous building! This is a hidden gem in Lubbock and needs to be brought to the attention of locals and visitors alike!

A perfect example of the reuse of an older building in town, this museum pays a great tribute to the glider pilots that trained and participated in a pivotal moment or WWII. The staff has taken great efforts to document and provide artifacts of each part of the training and participation of the glider crews during the war. The highlight is the restored smaller and the work in progress of the larger glider used in battle.
Exhibits draw visitors into each aspect and with parts that allow kids to interact, this museum is worth the stop.

Great museum dedicated to the gliders and paratroopers of WWII. Very informative with a very well done exhibits. My wife usually does not appreciate these museums but was impressed with this one.

My wife and I are both museum directors, and I manage a great aviation museum so we probably can recognize real quality. I cannot say enough about this wonderful museum. Not only are the exhibits first class their collection management is great and they do it all with a very small staff. They have one mission-tell the story of the World War II Glider Pilots-and the do it well. I learned a lot and Claudia was super impressed. We both found ideas to borrow for our own museum exhibits. I'd give this a five star rating. It's worth a drive if you want to really learn about an under-known story of WW II heroes.

Museum dedicated to the first stealth aircraft pilots - World War Two glider pilots. Exhibits include a WWII glider, and the troops, jeep, and equipment they carried. A professional and respectful museum of WWII veterans and their sacrifices for our freedom.

This museum was the dream of Dr. John Buesseler who fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. The founder of Texas Medical Center Dr. Buesseler kept close to his heart the men and women who fought in Europe flying the silent winged gliders. The museum holds many restored gliders. Volunteer docents will share the stories of many brave soldiers who fought to keep Europe from being overtaken by the Nazi's. Bring your children to learn the real history of World War II.

The Silent Wings Museum commemorates the South Plains Army Air Force training center that provided the final training phase for the troop carrier glider pilots of WWII. Watch their 15-min video first to understand the important context of this daring WWII combat effort. Then enjoy the exhibits, including a troop carrier glider, all inside a compact, air-conditioned environment. I'm ex-AF troop carrier pilot (C-130E, 1967-1971; our name changed from' troop carrier' to 'tactical airlift' just before I got in), and was very impressed with the quality of the information available at the museum. Also, I had no idea that the gliders were a part of my troop carrier heritage! Easy parking and little walking required. We spent about an hour and a half there.

We attended a wine festival here and it was absolutely the perfect place. It had a great combination of outdoor space and indoor space. I believe if you are in Lubbock you should stop by the Silent Wings Museum. I think it's a place the whole family would enjoy.

An eclectic selection of equipment used in the Operation Overlord invasion of Normandy in June 1944.
Centre piece is a range of gliders that carrier troops and other small equipment.
Other displays include a small dozer and rocket launcher.
Entry was inexpensive.
Interesting.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but it was a cold, rainy day and figured this might be something good to see on such a day. I found the museum to be fascinating. We spent a little over two hours there. I had no idea of the roll that gliders played in WWII so it was a real learning experience. The video shown in the theater and clips available in the displays were especially interesting. I'm glad that so much information was saved on this little known element of WWII.

I have worked out at LIA for over 25 years and was there when the silent wings museum was built. I have visited the museum many times over the years by myself and with friends and have always enjoyed the static displays and museum pieces.
What really blows my mind is how people flew in the gliders. The story is very interesting and makes you wonder if you would get in one of these with several other people and be towed behind a aircraft and then cut loose to glide to the ground with an inexperienced pilot and landing under fire in a unimproved field.

Here you can learn all about the WWII combat gliders program, including seeing restored gliders, observing the newspapers from the (long since shut down) training bases in the area, and seeing how the students / soldiers lived during their stay on Lubbock Army Air Field. Don't miss the C-47 out front or the displays of weapons inside.

If you like aviation history, this is a great place to visit. To start with, it is located at the old lubbock airport. The aviation displays are well maintained and full of history. This is a good place for the hole family to visit with lots of educational history for all ages. I highly recommend it.

This museum is dedicated to the men who flew gliders in WWII. The glider corps was part of the Allies invasion strategy particularly during the invasion of Normandy. There are several items associated with the glider service. I really enjoyed myself here.

Loved the retrieval video in the main hanger. The theater had a informative movie that made me go back and look at the gliders.

Most extraordinary place giving due credit to a very. brave group of men.
It was most beautifully laid out Museum. Everything done most thoughtfully. Clean and smelling wonderful!
Brilliant place to visit!

If you are into old planes at all...do not miss this one. They were giving rides on WW2 planes during my visit...but the wind got too strong and they had to stop.

I would not recommend this museum for young children. However, it is a very well done museum with an excellent, interesting display of military history. Gliders played a role in the allied victory in WWII and this museum does an excellent job telling this story. I'd highly recommend this museum to anyone interested in military history.
The people at the museum were helpful and friendly. I learned a great deal and enjoyed this visit.

Aside from being an important part of our history, the Silent Wings were just pretty tough! Definitely take this place in!

Great Museum. Several videos. Interesting displays. We were aware of gliders being used during WWII but until we visited this museum, we were not aware of the extent to which they were used. Well worth stopping for.

This is a cool place with a lot of unique history to tell. Definitely worth a look if you've got time in Lubbock.

Fun interactive museum that explains about a facet of WWII about which we knew nothing. WIsh we could have spent more than an hour there.

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at the Museum dedicated to the heroes of WW2.Very well laid out and informative. A great experience for those interested in history .We would not have known about it if we had not gone to the Buddy Holly centre.Get a dual ticket for both at a very reasonable price.

Very nice display of plans and history. Great thing to do on a hot or rainy day...Wont take to long but worth a stop by

My three sons (5, 8, 11) and I love to visit museums around the panhandle in the summer. We were happy to find this museum on a visit to Lubbock. They love planes, guns, and army guys, so Silent Wings definitely held their interests. Under 6 is free, so admission was only $18. We were there almost an hour. There were great planes, gliders, uniforms, artifacts, weapons, and more from both Allied and Axis. There were a couple of touch screen, interactive displays that the boys really liked. The impact of the glider in the war was a new piece of fascinating information, just like learning about the value of the Higgins boat at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. I will definitely return to this museum with my WWII obsessed husband. Great Job, Lubbock!

This is a very interesting and and entertaining museum, pictures, info, films and lots of stories explaining the trials and hardships of the Silent Wing's Crew's gliding into enemy territory mostly in the night...Wonderful Info. Again this was June 2014 , site below will not let me post correct date .

Nice museum. A good and quiet museum where you really had time to see interesting objects. A great VW2 museum that really has a personal touch

You will get the feeling that you can experience the sacrefice and dedication those young men had to win the second world war.

The glider patrols were amazing. Truly heroic. This was very informative about a branch of the Army that is not very well known.

My husband and son in law found this place extremely enjoyable. Me...not so much, but I'm not into war memorabilia. They have a nice walk through/self guided museum, film, gift shop was nice.

Here's another little gem of a museum! Having been a paratrooper in the 82d Airborne, I'd heard about glider-infantry units in that and other airborne divisions during and for a short time after WW II, but this museum explained everything very well. Training of glider pilots took place largely in the Lubbock area, as well as glider-infantry assault tactics. If in or near Lubbock, I highly recommend visiting this museum which is easy to reach off major highways!

We have taken all of our grandchildren “TheNine” to this unique museum. The museum provides a wonderful collection and commentary on a part of our history we knew very little about. The ‘Legacy of The World War II Glider Pilots’. It is very interesting and engaging for us and our 5-12 year old grandchildren. Well worth your time and the admission fee for adults and children. The museum is a very useful visual history for Homeschool families studying World War 1. We love that the museum has chosen Lubbock’s retired airport terminal building as their home.

This is my 2nd time here. My Father was a WWII glider pilot and also an instructor at this location. History at it's BEST!!!!!

I especially enjoy bringing my grandsons to the Silent Wings Museum to see the exchibits, touch the gliders and watch planes and helicopters take off. The Aviation Bootcamp for kids is super!

In the old Lubbock airport terminal just north of the new terminal.
has great old planes, gliders, and exhibits of the gliders used
in WWII.

We were very pleasantly surprised by the extensiveness of the exhibits here. There's a movie that puts it all in context, and then quite a few displays with WWII memorabilia, Allied and Axis, including weapons, uniforms, glider pilot jackets, propaganda art work, a huge room with a full-sized glider and other aircraft, an Army jeep and bulldozer/tractor, and more. Well worth the visit!

My trip was a tribute to my DADDY on the 5th banniversary of his death. I finally was able to see how dangerous those GLIDERS really were and know how much courage it took to be a GLIDER PIOLET. I saw just how terrifying the blue SS uniforms were even without a mannequin inside them, forget a living being. I saw the guns my Dad carried and the kind of JEEP that almost killed him on D-DAY when his GLIDER crashed.
I also realized how very very young those BOYS were. ( When one is facing such terror and responsibility at such a young age, anything under 36 years old is a BOY.) and how many never were able to grow older. My Dad never said much about that time, but he told us the places of his missions. I wish he had been well enough to have seen the museum and added to the memories he shared. I wish there had been more personal memories from the
Flight Officers, but those Officers just went on with their lives and kept the war years wrapped up inside themselves. The SILENT WINGS MUSEUM is a place to learn, remember, and never forget
how big a price freedom carries and the large debt we owe those BRAVE MEN and Women.

My son is the history buff in the family but I enjoyed this museum as much as he did! Awesome pieces of American history.

This proved to be an emotional experience as I stood at different scenes thinking of cousins who were there. As a teenager in WW II I was captivated by the gliders and this proved to be a realistic extension. Thanks Lubbock and all the volunteers who provided this opportunity!

Introductory movie was a little 'echo-y' which made parts of it hard to understand. Interesting to hear the story & see a glider. Didn't spend a lot of time here.

We did not even know this was there. There is a ton of history lots of videos there are some inter acting screens. Planes a must see for any plane buff but everyone should see it to see what these guys did and went through

Glad we went here. I learned a lot about the gliders roll in WWII. Excellent exhibits. I enjoyed listening to the video stories from the pilots. They were very brave.

Wow what a chance to see some of the gliders used for the war. Really impressed by the displays and videos on how they were able to recover the gliders once they had landed.

Visited here in March 2016. This place is worth the trip. The cost was minimal and the value is great. A short film and many displays of WW2 memorabilia. A barracks setup, weapons displays and of course gliders and their development and use in WW2. Well worth the stop.

Great displays and information on the WWII glider services and D-Day activities. Located in the old airport terminal.

We enjoyed our visit. It was very informative and had cool displays to view. We had no idea how important and how much used the gliders were.

Highly recommend this museum. It's amazing to see these small aircraft and realize what a heavyweight job this division of our military performed.

What a fantastic museum! Dedicated to the glider forces of WW2. Lots of memorabilia and several restored aircraft, including a Waco glider. A must see for all history buffs.

Lots and Lots of wonderful information about the use and value of Gliders during war time. You will learn information you never knew. Many great artifacts to bring to life this amazing piece of history. While little children may get bored quickly after walking around and seeing the displays, adults interested in history will thoroughly enjoy the exposure to this little piece of history that is seldom talked about. If you are in Lubbock you need to include this in your visits.

one of the top museum in the south-plains very worth going to see one time with some unique things in west Texas

Well worth the time to explore. Be sure to rent the audio tour. It's a deal for $5 and is very informative.

A fitting memorial to the brave glider pilots of WWII. I didn't know gliders were used in so many venues. Excellent refurbished glider and an excellent collection of war items, both sides.

This is a well-done, smaller, museum dedicated to gliders used during World War II. There are few museums in the country that cover this aspect of the war in as much detail.
If you are not interested in military history, the facility probably won't mean that much to you. If, however, you are a student of WWII and/or aviation of that period, you will enjoy it very much.
The showcase of the museum is one of the few remaining Waco CG-4 gliders. There is also a nicely restored liaison aircraft. There are plans to show a British Horsa glider - another rarity.
There are several displays of soldier's gear and uniforms from both sides of the war. Artifacts from the training field at Lubbock, newspapers of the period, and a film outlining glider operations from the war fill out the rest of the museum.
It is easy to get to, just off I-27 at the airport. You can't miss the C-47 outside.

We came here to fill some time and ended up having a good time. The museum is well done and has a ton of artifacts and memorabilia. I learned a lot of new information. Definitely worth a visit.

Very nice museum about the history of WW2 gliders.Very nice displays, Very nice use of the old airport bldg.

We were very pleasently surprised at this gem hidden away in the old terminal building on the west side of the Lubbock airport. The educational aspect and detail of the exhibitions were truly outstanding. My knowledge of the glider involvement in WW II was certainly lacking and has been enhanced dramatically. Outstanding collection of photos, artifacts and the presentation is great. A film presentation in the theater adds many details.

My husband is a WWII history buff and knew about the gliders but appreciated the additional info and learning about additional impact of gliders he hadn't known about before. Also great to see actual gliders and other historical artifacts. Well organized museum.

My kids, 9 and 11 at the time, were so interested in the museum and its exhibits. You can learn so much about the World War II glider program. They offer tours for both schools and groups of 10 or more.

Informative, well laid out… Several of the artifacts are generic WW II such as uniforms but the signage is informative but not too much . Mock up of training barracks, partial glider.. I had no idea of the role gliders played and came away with a new appreciation.. our admission was 1/2 off by showing the receipt from Buddy Holly Center.. great road signage helped us find it easily. Recommend for history buffs

Has hours of planes and other historical military items for kids to look at. My children enjoyed it. Military discount as well.

Went here out of boredom while visiting Lubbock. Did not expect much. I was certainly wrong! The museum staff have done an excellent job in presenting the story of a comparatively small and specialized service of World War 2. First, the building it is housed in is interesting in its own way, being the old Lubbock Municipal Airport. The main display is where passengers once boarded and so you get an excellent view of the runways.
The weapons display is interesting. The informational film conveyed just how dangerous was this service. The pilots who volunteered for these one way, almost at times, suicidal missions were certainly real heroes that are often overlooked. The restored glider was amazing in how something so lightweight could carry such heavy cargo.
If you are in Lubbock, by all means stop by it. I learned alot.

I went to the Silent Wings Museum after visiting the Buddy Holly Museum. With the paid admission to the Buddy Holly Museum you get in free ... what a value!!
I wasn't too exposed to the glider history during the wars and beyond, but this museum packed a lot in! Unfortunately I didn't have lots of time to go through it, but did have a chance to appreciate all that it had to offer. There was a short video that gave an overview of the glider squadrons in the war and then everything from war memoribilia, to documented timelines of events, to diorama's to life size scenes, and finally several gliders in a large auditorium.
I've been to many museums in large and small towns. The quality of this musuem was comparable to what I would expect to find in a larger town that had a large arts program. Extremely well done!

Absolutely loved learning about all these men did for the love of their country! A part of history we knew very little about until now.

Wow, this museum is informative and very interesting. Prior to our visit, we had no idea how important gliders were in the war effort. We learned so much. Truly amazing! This is an amazing part of history and definitely worth the stop.

I've been to many a WWII museum but this one is full of unique artifacts.
They have an actual glider in the building and one room holds all the various items it would hold. From troops, to a jeep, to a cannon. Amazing!
A wall of weapons used by both sides is a wonderful surprise. The woman who greeted me provided a quick overview of the museum and the history of the airport.
Well worth the time to visit. A $5 entrance fee is very inexpensive for what you get. Show up. Support the museum.

Spent the afternoon here because it was half price if you went to the buddy holly center. It is 10x better than the buddy center. A lot of great WW2 artifacts, actually have one of the fully restored glider and a massive window you can watch the planes take off from at Lubbock airport. Don't miss it.

Who knew that gliders were so important to invasion plans in WW II? I've seen lots of movies about D-day and other parts of WW II, but I can't ever remember seeing Gliders. But how else would you get a fully-loaded jeep behind enemy lines. It is certainly not going by parachute! The museum makes an excellent presentation of a) the problem b) the planned solution and c) the implementation of the plan!

Unexpected fun! I didn’t know how big or interesting this place would be. We spent a couple hours here. Lots to see and learn. I had no idea military gliders even existed before coming here. The museum is housed in the original Lubbock Airport. And the large room that hold the big glider is a great place to watch planes take off and land at the new airport. Bonus!

All were deeply touched by the exhibits
As a veteran myself I was very moved
The children learned a great deal of our history.
I keep going back
It is like a step back in time.

The museum is at the old general aviation part of the Lubbock Airport. Be prepared for about 2 hours here and it's worth every minute. Lots of displays and very well presented. The Waco glider room opens up to let you look at the airfield.

Highest possible recommendations for the Silent Wings museum in Lubbock. This museum focuses on the little known contributions of the glider pilots supporting US military operations in WWII. Especially impressive is the comprehensive examination of the history of gliders in the military, the development of military gliders, training of pilots, employment of this system, and the high cost of these operations. Societal impacts are also examined with a superb set of period toys associated with the war. We had a chance to talk with the historian who brought to light many facet of the glider employment that were little known - she is a gem! A good, but short, movie has some priceless contemporary interviews with some of the men who flew these gliders into combat.

This is a spectacular museum that everyone should see. The story of the glider pilots and soldiers that flew in them is really inspiring. The museum actually has a lot of artifacts about WWII in general and not just about the gliders.
The half hour (or so) move was excellent. The main room in the back that housed an actual glider and a couple other plans was awesome, partly because of the huge windows that look out onto the Lubbock airport runways. It's a perfect setting. I would have paid four or five times what they charged for admission.

WOW! This is really a don't miss museum if you are anywhere near Lubbock. There is a reason they call our World War II veterans, the greatest generation! Everything in this museum is amazing. The videos are especially informative and impressive especially those where they are interviewing the veterans who flew the gliders into combat. They all thought they were just doing their part - but the bravery it had to take to fly these aircraft into combat had to be amazing! At the beginning, it was trial and error, they just kept learning and improving at each operation - WOW!

Very nice place to visit. They also often have special concerts or attractions for specific holidays. We first went because this was included in the tickets for the Buddy Holly Museum. Worth your while to do both in the same day. Great place to take out of town visitors.

Nice little museum on a little-known topic. This museum contains some very interesting items. I just wish the gift shop had some more WW II items, and perhaps less items made in China.

I have lived in Lubbock for 40 years and had never visited this museum, until last weekend. I wound up spending 2 hrs and will return. If you are a history buff or WWII buff, you dont want to miss this! Be sure to see the hour long film. I usually dont watch the movies, but I did this one and it seemed to only last a few minutes. Well worth your time, trip and money!

If you're in Lubbock for a few days, this is a great place to visit. We hadn't heard about it earlier and in the space of three days had a few free hours and chose to go to Silent Wings. I'm so glad we visited. Bonus - if it's hot outside and you're looking for something to do - the museum is all indoors and air conditioned!
World War II history buffs will love the stories about gliders - I learned a lot and have been a student of WW2 history for a long time. The 15 minute video gives a great overview and then there are displays of aircraft, equipment, uniforms and weaponry.
I was with my 23 year old son, who is also a history buff, but I'm sure that when my kids were younger they would have enjoyed the displays and probably would have spent an hour or so. As it was, we only arrived an hour before closing and wished we could have stayed for another 30-60 minutes.
The museum is out at the airport, so only 15-30 minutes from most places in Lubbock.

This gem of a museum holds a large and well presented collection of stories, equipment, and personal effects of the glider units used in WW2 to transport troops, equipment, ammunition, medical supplies, etc. silently behind enemy lines. And knowing it was a one way trip as they could not take off again! We went because my husband’s father was one of those who was landed in a glider during the Battle of the Bulge, but there is plenty to keep even non-history buffs interested. We were stunned when we realized that we had already been there 2 hours! Uncrowded, good introductory video, and tickets are under $10.

We visited this museum as my husbands father was in the RAF during World War 2 and we wanted to find out a bit more about the glider pilots and their role in the war.
Here we found a mass of information and stories from many of those who played a part in the glider involvement.
As we’re British, we also gained a good understanding of the collaboration between the British and the Americans, us being rich in trained pilots and the USA being rich in the capability to manufacture gliders.
I suspect that there are low numbers of visitors to this museum, but if you’re in the Lubbock area it really is a must visit place.
Here is a wealth of World War 2 historic knowledge that should not be forgotten and should be passed on to the next generation, as these brave men and women should never be forgotten.

great little museum which honors those who risked much to keep us protected. You can be in and out in a few hours. well worth your time and attention. My ten year old had a great time.

We stopped in Lubbock specifically for this museum and were very pleased with how well done it is. It doesn't take long to see everything and the displays are very nicely set up. Much more memorabilia than just related to gliders, but the glider information is excellent.

We got a 50% discount because we had gone to the Buddy Holly Museum earlier. If you love aviation and WWII plan on spending 2 hours there is a lot to see. Wonderful displays and lots of great information not covered in other places we have been to.

if you like WWII and aircrafts, this is the place you must see!
my family and I went to this about twice a year.
it is a great place to take young children and learn more history.

When I first starting looking at the exhibit, I said to my self these soldiers were crazy to even consider this type of operation for combat. But looking at their faces and determination in the pictures, they were going to make it work even if it killed them. And, many did die. But now, it is clear to me they were the bravest of all and the most silent of WWII soldiers both figuratively speaking and literally.

This is a great place for adults and kids. From the memorabilia to the video to the actual planes, it is very interesting and educational. It's closed on Sundays.

Spent an hour going through this important military museum. I had heard of gliders being used in WWII but learned so much here where pilots trained. Watch the video first and then enjoy the displays, arms, and planes. A very well put together museum.

Honestly deserves to be in the top 15 of military/ww2 museums in the U.S, I have been to 7 of trip advisors top 10 and this museum was better than some of them. Although a slightly smaller museum, definitely worth a visit.

Really enjoyed the story of the use of gliders during the war. We were not aware of the extent of this effort by the US military.

The “G” on the pin of the pilots that flew the gliders should really stand for “Guts”. Amazing history there.

If you enjoy history, especially WWll history, this is a must go. The folks that piloted gliders during this terrible conflict had to be incredibly motivated and brave. See the gliders and marvel at the story told in the movie theatre!

Until we had been to the Silent Wings Museum, I hadn't heard of the glider program in US military history. It was a vital part in war efforts that isn't often discussed in history classes. (At least ones I attended!)
The museum itself is on the small side, with lots to see. It houses many artifacts from WWII, including a variety of vehicles. The gliders are the Silent Wings amd are featured in a large gallery overlooking an airstrip where antique aircraft, modern helicopters and the like are flown in for days of remembrance and reflection (DDay, Veteran's Day, etc). There is an admission cost, but it is usually waived on days with events occurring. The kids enjoy it, but it is smaller, and younger children may get bored quickly. Older kids will enjoy exploring all the details and facts posted on the walls, and looking at items only read about in classes.

A great museum about the WWII Army Air Corps/Army Air Force Glider force. Located on the old Lubbock airport, it contains hundreds of exhibits and artifacts. The museum also has a 20 minute video theater that gives a short history of the Glider force. Staff is very motivated to answer any and all questions.

If you are interested in World War II history this is a must to see in Lubbock. I could have spent hours just reading the stories. I makes you realize the courage our fathers, grandfathers and in some cases great grand fathers generation had.

My husband and I stopped at the Silent Wings Museum in Lubbock in July. I had read previous reviews and the museum lived up to them. It had excellent displays of all types of WWII memorabilia. My husband is the WWII buff but I was totally impressed. So very interesting! Would suggest for adults as lots of reading. Wonderful photographs!

Where else can you see a restored WWII glider? Plenty of other WWII artifacts. In fact, I would have rated the museum higher had it kept more focus.

Provides interesting overview of use of gliders for troop and cargo transport during World War 2. Nice mix of artifacts and displays. It means a little more given that many of the glider pilots were trained in Lubbock during the war. Plan on about an hour.

I enjoyed everything about the museum. I recommend it to anyone children and adults. It tells a great story of men who came from all over the world to train in West Texas to fight in World War II. I was totally impressed, I didn't want to go at first but this is the kind of thing my wife loves, so I went as she kept coaxing me. I learned there were glider planes in the war and what the glider men in combat faced. I walked away with a greater respect for our men in combat today and in our past.

Very interesting museum. I learned quite a bit. Lots of things to see. It'll keep your interest from beginning to end.

Silent Wings Museum is a must see when you are in the area. It will not disappoint anyone, there are so many things to see for all interests. Amazing history, sights and facts.

If you are interested in World War 2 and how we fought when we got into the war, this museum is for you. The Silent Wings were glider planes able to silently fly behind enemy lines. The training center is here is Lubbock and you can't help but admire these men. And you get a half price entry to the Buddy Holly Center

Do not pass this up, especially if you like WW11 history. We had a connection because my wife's dad was on a glider and because we had a connection I gave it a 5 but if you just like history its a solid 4.

This is a very cool museum about a little know part of WWII. There is a great introductory movie that will set the stage for the whole experience, a number of interesting displays and interactive stations.

How many people know that gliders made such an important contribution to the success of World War II? You will after a few hours in this museum. The Army Air Corps realized that moving large numbers of troops, jeeps and small arms into a battlefield could be accomplished with non-powered aircraft. Lubbock was one of the major bases that taught aviators the art of landing these gliders in small fields usually behind enemy lines and under heavy fire. The nation owes these brave men a great deal and this museum is dedicated to them. It has a fully restored Waco CG-4A glider, a dioramas of WWII including uniforms, equipment and typical camp barracks. This is a not-to-be-missed attraction when in Lubbock. Plan on spending a few hours as there is a lot to see including video experiences of some of the surviving pilots.
Admission is only $8 ($6 for seniors) and is well worth it.
Interesting and Informative
An absolutely fabulous experience. First hand stories from the Glider Pilots of their experiences really makes this a unique experience.. which is expected given the museum was created BY the glider pilots.
$5 or less entry fee is a great deal for the exhibits and history lessons that are here.
And for those who don't know, these are not little one or two person gliders, but gliders that delivered things like bull-dozers, or jeeps to positions behind enemy lines!
