Beautiful sky, amazing view of Charles Island. Beautiful park. Great place to walk the water so clean. Gorgeous sand and shells. Great place to go miles of beach and walkway

By Thei J |

Except for the benches, boardwalk and parking lot this little beach does not look like it was touched by man. It looks likes it's literally in the middle of nowhere: a little wetland ecosystem right on the Sound with lots of shells and twigs. The water is bathtub warm and shallow perfect for the little ones. Please don't expect bathrooms and concession stands, there are none, but you don't pay to park either. On the day I was there, there was a really strong ocean smell, there were no lifeguards on duty, and Charles Island was closed.

We stopped by for a little walk on or visit through Milford. The parking was easy to get to from 95. We got a 2-3 mile walk in early on the boardwalk and beach. It's a very flat walk and easy. A great way to spend the afternoon at Mitford.

Even in the windy weather, a beautiful walk

Would love to go back in the summertime. You can walk to the island that is connected to the beach.

We actually kayaked there one summer

By Gene G |

We were visiting relatives in Milford this summer and went to this beach only to discover that, like many East Coast beaches, it was nothing like our CA beaches in places like Malibu and Coronado. We heard a rumour that the state of CT was going to start charging a fee to visit this small beach. It's worth taking your kids there for free, but I would never pay to visit it.

By Chezkm |

Nice place to bring the family and sit on the beach or enjoy a picnic on the grass! Beautiful view of Charles Island and surrounding areas! I love walking the boardwalk too!

By Nancy D |

Nice boardwalk for a stroll. Beautiful beaches have with iews odds Long Island Sound and Charles Island.

By SammiDeRosa |

I came here on a Saturday morning and there was plenty of parking available. The beach wasn't too busy and there was plenty of space for people to lay out. I noticed there was a decent amount of garbage in the sand however. Despite that it was very pretty and the boardwalk made for a nice walk. There aren't any showers or restrooms, so important for anyone who is looking to have those!

By Jonathan C. |

Lots of fun at this beach! During the low tide, a sand bar opens up and there is a path you can walk to the island. A little more than a mile round trip. Island is closed during the summer for bird migration/conservation, but you can walk up to the edge.

By Carol P |

Under construction restroom and snack stand will improve this soft sandy beach area. Currently there were PortaPotties at parking area a distance from the beach. There are picnic tables near parking but no tree shade. A sign states No Pets but many dog owners take their dogs along a boardwalk that connects to Walnut Beach a MILFORD City beach. There is a trail dog owners could use. Beach goers are warned to watch tides and not to walk sandbar to Charles Island. The island is off limits.

I've been going to Silver Sands since I was a child 30 years ago. Things of changed over the years and only gotten better. The Park itself is free and one of only three free state parks in Connecticut. That said, there is plenty of sand, a great boardwalk to walk on out houses which are kept clean and the water fountain in the summer. This is only place in Connecticut that I know of that has a tombolo . This thin sand bar goes out to the Charles island. Please be sure to make sure when it's low or high tied so you don't get stuck on the island .In the summer there are lifeguards and park rangers on hand to make sure everything goes the way it supposed to and what is an enjoyable experience. Oh and did I say ample parking as well, though the walk to the beach from the parking lot might be the only downfall . This is because it could take you about five minutes. Otherwise enjoy silver sands state park in Milford as I have for over 30 years.

Silver Sands is one of my favorite go to beaches. It's hardly ever packed and the water is always warm and clear. There's a lot of seashells on the shore, so be careful as you walk into the water, or bring water shoes. Many people also like to walk out to Charles Island as the tide is often low. I haven't been brave enough to do that just yet, because I have watched how quickly the water comes back in. Be careful!
I often like to go here after work to watch the sunset. I don't know what it is, but Silver Sands offers a beautiful backdrop with breathtaking views.
I only wish you didn't have to walk across the boardwalk while lugging all your beach stuff to get here, but given the free parking and easy access, that's easily overlooked.
Come down and take a nice walk over to Walnut Beach, or take a nice swim, or just simply relax.

Silver Sands State Park is quite beautiful. You access the beach via a wooden bridge leading to the boardwalk that runs the length of the beach with spectacular views of the water and the wild life. The beach has bird nesting areas and an extensive marsh area. . There is ample parking and even on a wintry day, there are people walking as it's a quiet spot and the views are spectacular.

Visited this area when staying in Milford
this week and was very impressed. Must be lovely in the summer would recommend any one to visit .

Milford Connecticut is a beautiful place with lots of nice beaches. The silver Sands State Park is a local gem and worth a visit to see the wildlife habitat and gorgeous beaches. It’s a picturesque part of Connecticut. Well worth a visit.

By Julie |

Hugging the Connecticut shoreline, Silver Sands boardwalk is a treat and retreat. While gazing out at the beautiful horizon, don't forget to glance down and around. Speckled among the sand, you may find a kindness rock that speaks to your soul, a unique zen rock formation in a sacred space or a ribbon dressed prayer net. These treasures abound and there's always something to ponder and wonder!

By Jeanette524 |

Nice place to visit and pack a lunch. Good for biking as well. Parking is a bit away from the beach area, but it's a pleasant walk.

By Kristy T |

Silver Sands has a very nice boardwalk. I did not swim here, but it seems rocky, but calm. Sand is rough so wear shoes. A lot of cool little seashells. Great place to sit, relax and enjoy the views. There are also sand dunes and saltwater marshes. It's cool to see high tide roll in. Free parking!

By MAMA G |

Great strides along the beach... the walkway nicely maintained, some liter along the way but great to bring the stroller and enjoy.

By MikeI283BL |

Fun beach to explore. Plenty of parking and a casual work to get to the beach. The grounds are kept well and there are lots of neat sea shells.

By Linda |

Not kids friendly. The park rangers are mean and nasty. I left the beach just to get some food, but came back found out that they closed down the beach without any notices. They didn’t let me know even I was begging them to let me in just so I could pick up the family cuz only my husband and my baby girl on the beach with tons of beach stuff. They said No. If you have kids, do yourself a favor, don’t even bother to go there. Btw, the sand is not good with many broken shells, it’s easy to get cut if you are not being careful.

By Becky123q |

It was an unusual 50 degree sunny day for beginning of February - and I wanted to go for a walk. Silver Sands is the place i like to go to walk. The views are beautiful and the boardwalk has seats along the way - for sitting and enjoying the view Been going there for years. Check it out - you will like it too! it was low tide today but still just as nice as any other day

By Stephanie M |

Great oceanfront beach. So many shells - AMAZING! All locals were so sweet and kind! Great location close to many things.

By Rebby2k |

The most interesting thing about this park by far is the sandbar. In order to make the most of it you need to time it to visit at low tide or else the sandbar will be submerged and unable to walk on. Still no guarantees. I arrived right at low tide, however the wind made it to where water still covered half of it and access to the island was not possible. They had a park staff member there at the end to make sure people didn’t wade out past. I was able to ask some questions but it looks like he wasn’t there to give information as much. Still it was neat to see and walk on and look for shells. The park also has a well maintained boardwalk that runs parallel to the coast which makes for a relaxing walk. There is a large marsh area between the beach and the parking lot where you can spot a little wildlife. No trees to speak of so take sunscreen on sunny days. There are also a number of uncovered picnic tables near the parking lot. The only restrooms I spotted were some port-a-johns. Overall a decent park with a beach and place to swim in the summer.

By Catie V |

This beach has plenty of parking available, nice boardwalk to see the sights, and an island not far offshore that you can explore during low tide. Somewhat a very rocky beach, and was very muddy when we visited, but overall easy to find and lots of room to explore and spread out.

By WilsonFamily1234 |

The beach was beautiful although very "shelly". Walking on the sand was a little difficult without shoes. The walk to the island during low tide was wonderful. Its about a 3/4 mile walk which was beautiful. Our 9 year old had a lovely time. The only thing I was not crazy about was how far out exactly the water went during low tide. It was a very long walk to reach water in the late afternoon. It is also a rather far walk from parking and the only bathrooms available at this time are in the parking area. Its well worth the trip if you don't mind a lot of walking.

By Jeff C |

I love to start the say with a view of the rising sun. It is a beautiful reminder that there is beauty waiting for us to discover. Each sunrise is a promise of a better today. Silver Sands park provides a long stretch of beach from which we can watch the sun rise over Long Island Sound. With Charles Island in the foreground and passing boats in the mid view the skyline lights on fire as the sun nears the horizon.
AS you walk along the beach you can admire the mandalas that have been erected by previous walkers. The birds play along the water's edge rising and falling with the shore breezes.
As morning gives way to afternoon Silver Sands is also a great place to come and take in the waves and work on your relaxation.

By Laura0209 |

Silver Sands state park has a nice boardwalk. It is a great walk along Long Island Sound. Plenty of parking and during the holidays they open up the overflow parking. Nice Beach. People do swim there but I would not, as the water in Long Island Sound is definitely getting cleaner, but I still do not consider it clean enough for swimming. The only thing missing is a small snack bar.

By Feike v |

we brought our metal detectors and while the adults were looking for treasures the kids were playing in the sand looking for crabs.
the beach was a quiet place that's kept clean and it's a fun place for the family to visit.

By turnkeyloan |

This beach is free to enter. It has minimal facilities but a great boardwalk that takes the walker to Walnut Beach which charges out of town visitors a parking fee between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The beach is clean and wide. However, it really suffered from the Irene and Sandy storms as the sand is no longer fine but filled with small rocks and shells. I grew up at this beach and was shocked to see its deterioration. Be aware that it is very dangerous to walk out to Charles Island on the exposed tombolo. You must know the tide schedule and be very aware as the water sweeps over the bar very strongly and the current is strong. The restrooms are portajohns. Pleasant day at the beach, enjoy.

By Andy S |

Silver sands is a great park. There is a beautiful boardwalk that you can walk on. There is great birding also. This park is a gem.

By Moni3kids |

Great local beach. You can walk out to charles island - beautiful location. Clean with a great board walk.

By Jamie D |

Go here stupid! It's awesome for a stroll and a serene setting. Sunset walks with the tide in the right spot will get to you a little island.

By Dimitry K |

If youre looking for a quiet walk or a day with the little ones, this place is great. They are expanding it as well. A myriad of wild plants, insects, birds and seashells will give your kid something to do while you enjoy some rare for the eastcoast peace and quiet.

By JohnBCt |

We came for a short visit to check the park out. Beautiful location There are plenty of picnic tables and a nice beach on the other side of the boardwalk

By Tom L |

Multiple parking areas only a short walk to the beach. Boardwalk extends from Silver Sands to Walnut Beach. Sand bar exposed to enable a walk out to Charles Island (bird sanctuary, so you cannot explore the island itself.) Nice sandy beaches on the Long Island Sound.

By Tammy F |

I like to come to this beach for the boardwalk. Safe to walk alone and it's so beautiful you almost lose track of how far you've walked. Relaxing, has great things to stop and look at along the route.

By Judith B |

My husband and I enjoy walking the boardwalk together… although there are numerous signs stating ‘No Pets’ there were many people walking their dogs… yes they were on leashes but when two dogs walk past each other and are jumping and barking and growling it makes walk past them a tense situation…. Some how this should be monitored more frequently …

By kris s |

A beautiful site and wonderful in winter or summer. Great restaurant down the road called The Greek Spot Cafe and Grill. Would suggest a walk at the park and then go have a meal there.

By cruisingqueen |

Currently in the midst of "improvements", but a wonderful board walk along the edge of LI Sound, shore birds to see

By Tim H |

My wife had wildlife class there. The group walked and talked about what they saw. Lots of people walked on some of t the boardwalks there just watching the birds and the boats sail by.

By cathyklim |

Great views. The board walk is well maintained. The trails could use some work. Good place to run 🏃‍♀️

By 579dianneo |

Free parking. Wide beach. Clean, shallow water for wading. Boardwalk connects to walnut beach. A good place for a visit with little kids.

By OldeBear |

Hi Folks. Besides having a nice beach, it also has nice wildlife too. The birds are deer are North and West of the parking lot. Regards, OldeBear

By Mindy and Roger A |

Stopped here for a quick look at the beach and stayed 2 hours! This is a great little beach park with easy access from I-95. The elevated wooden boardwalks provide an excellent view of the wetlands as well as the beach and off shore activity. There is a nice sandy beach for lazy sunbathing or strolling also the shore in sandals. On the surfaced walkways were people of all Ages walking, strolling hand in hand, joggers, people with canes or wheelchairs, etc.. Sailboats & Fishing Boats. Someone said at low tide you can walk to the offshore island!

We found a few small stones and were surprised to find "Sea Glass" along the shore. An added attraction in this urban environment is the variety of wildlife. Very impressed and glad we stopped by!

By Jane M |

Amazing Boardwalk super-wide always tons of foot traffic great place to run into friends or just pop in your earbuds and go for a walk

By Gloria W |

We had a relaxing family outing here on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. We were delighted with the pretty water view and also were able to see people flying kites. We brought our lunches and were lucky to find a picnic table under a tree. If a person is handicapped, the overflow parking lot is close to the tables. This is a state park with no entrance fee. For bathroom facilities, there are only porta potties.

By Tara W |

The beach is very clean and not too packed. There is a food stand that is a bit expensive but the food is good. The only issue is at low tide it gets extremely low and it's not good for swimming at that time of the day.

By Skater |

The beach is nice, water is warm, and the breeze is welcome!
The shore is very shallow at low tide and very adequate at high. You need flip-flops: the sea shells are in abundance on the shore and in the water. Bring water, snacks, all the beach stuff need. Be prepared to carry it from the parking lot to the beach. The parking lot is ample, but was completely full at 2 pm on Sunday.

By Sherry |

We arrived early on a sunny October morning. I cannot imagine a better way to spend a morning. It was absolutely beautiful and so incredibly peaceful. After a short walk from the parking lot (there was plenty of parking) along a wonderfully maintained walkway, we went towards the right to continue walking along the boardwalk. Around every turn were spectacular views. Although we only spent an hour there, we could easily have spent way more time.

By Donna A |

This beach was amazing and clean and a good place to walk and unwind. We walked several miles and when its low tide you can actually walk over to a separate island. It was really a beautiful place and we are looking forward to going in the summer again..

By Ima P |

We stopped here to stretch on a drive down the eastern US coast. This was a terrific stop for a walk. The boardwalk is large and runs almost two miles along the coast. The beaches are large and the scenery is pretty. I can only imagine this is a popular spot in the summer - and probably stunning, too.

By rl8587 |

We found this park to have a great walking “boardwalk” type path and a few different beach spots. Great to be able to walk along side the ocean. Found it to be a busy/ popular spot.

By DadaSuzzy |

The Silver Sands State Park is extremely well kept and clean and certainly feels like a safe place to enjoy a walk on the beach. There's ample parking and the walkways are even and wheelchair accessible.

It wasn't the case during our visit, but apparently you can walk to a nearby island when the tide is low.

By Janteuwen |

Great place to go to the beach, hang around, take a walk... free parking on the park side, beware of 100$ tickets outside of that.

By Paulabina |

Our beach visit today July 19, 2017, went not as good as expected. In past years we have gone to the beach here and we had a decent time, but this afternoon when we arrived it was super low tide and the tide was just started to come back in; therefore, it smelled really fishy (excuse my French, but it was a fart like smell). Go during HIGH TIDE. BRING BEACH SHOES. I really wouldn't walk around bare feet because with shoes the sand felt a bit slimy and there were tons of shells all over the beach-nice for shelling, but terrible for walking. The beach also needs to be cleaned up a bit. Also, if you have never been here before, pay attention to the buoys because they are there for a reason. There are strong rip tides out in the sound. Watch your children! Next time we go, we'll try at high tide like when we used to go to see how that goes.

By Waleed A |

We timed our trip with low tide and had a fun walk around the island, and my college kids enjoyed the return walk when the tide began eating into the sandbar. Be aware the park entrance and parking were under construction in mid May but not a big deal.

By Vicki A |

We were looking for a great walking path (because we love to walk and we are visiting from out of town) and we found it here!! We actually walked 3.2 miles on the boardwalk!! GREAT scenery walking along the shoreline! We wore our masks, as requested by signage, but noted that a number of others did not. Point of note on parking: being out of state (Maryland), we noticed the parking QR code and information on the signage. We followed all of the steps but could never get the information to load so we could pay for the parking. A couple of locals came by and they even tried to help us but to no avail. We/they even called 4 different organizations, including the local and state police, and no one could help us with paying for our parking. We ended up just staying parked there and did not get a ticket or towed!! Not sure what was up with the parking but we appreciated being able to park there and take our walk!! Thanks Connecticut. You are great hosts!!

By Amy A |

I took my two children (6 & 9 years) to walk out to Charles Island on the sandbar at low tide. We made sure to get to the beach by 1 hour before the lowest tide and had no problem hiking out, circling the island, and coming back. Kids loved collecting shells and looking at the tidal pools. We also had some blackberries on the island. You can't go to the interior of the island because it is a bird sanctuary but it's still great fun. We brought our lunch and had a little picnic while out there. Highly recommend!

By Judy S |

Fabulous boardwalk for long or shorter walks with plenty of free parking. Beautiful view of beach...beach is also great during season with lifeguards. Few barbecue grills also! Good handicap access also!

By Morgan D |

Nice area, free parking, security and beautiful views. Lots of sea creatures during low tide. Bring shoes as the broken shells are sharp.

By LibbyG911 |

Always our favorite beach. Over the years the sand has been less...Ummm..clean and smooth. Great views. You have to watch the tides for timing. Low tide is not a pleasant smell. LOL

By Mary S |

Cute park with on a beach. Parking was free. We only had about an hour or so and really wanted to just be on the beach. Beach is sand with a ton of broken shells and full shells. Beach is clean and peaceful.

By colemanharbor |

Beach, Boardwalk, Scenery. Low key outing. Limited activities but a nice place to just, relax. No Cost to get in.

By Zoe L |

She'll collecting, bird watching, soaking up the sun and a lovely stroll along the shoreline and that doesn't complete the list of things to do! We saw a couple doing yoga and many picnics happening. The water is calm and warm. Just beautiful!!!

By NY319 |

Beautiful, relaxing clean spot. The kids loved the water and looking for rocks and shells. Would like to visit again soon.

By morena523 |

This beach is very nice with a lovely boardwalk. We love to go walking and swimming. My Fiancé likes to fish out there. Best part is the free parking. I enjoy it every time.

By maisiemom |

This is one of the only free beaches in this area that doesn't require a beach sticker. We love to go down here and take a walk along the beach. Boardwalk is fairly new and perfect if you don't want to walk. Beach area is wide. Two negatives is that if you are going to the beach for the day, the beach area is a long way from the parking lot and there are no bathrooms or food service. Plan accordingly!

By bauschbernard |

If you like the beach, its nice to know Silver Sands. Not a large beach but it has what you need. Sandy beach for getting a tan, great board walk for a long stroll, clean water for a swim and last but not least plenty of area to fish. Oh almost forgot a picnic area.

By Pathfinder14 |

The view is beautiful and the walkway is great for exercising. Enjoy relaxing on the beach or walking to Charles Island - only at low tide!! It's a perfect place for residents close by or travelers.

By Mr10701 |

Beautiful day at the beach. For families, couples and friends. At low tide you can actually walk over to an island. Water was warm today. Also heard the fishing is fab

By Nancy T |

Silver Sands is a fantastic getaway and still free! You can walk to Charles Island at low tide, but be careful and know exactly when the tide changes. You can also take a lovely walk on the wooden boardwalk, and see lots of sea birds.

By Gaynor B |

Too hot to stay in the city so we drove an easy 30 minutes from New Haven. The parking was free with plenty of space. We walked along the boardwalk for about a mile until we came to Walnut beach. Stayed for the afternoon, even went for a swim in the sea. Nice clean restroom and a lovely walk back, watching the birds and butterflies. Can recommend the park for families or couples, it’s lovely.

By C M |

This is a more remote ocean front park. It only has port a pot restrooms. There is a nice boardwalk you can walk right beside the beach on. I don't think pets are allowed there. There were some picnic tables and a few benches.

By John M |

This free state beach on the sound has a very nice boardwalk and pier. The beach, as many on the sound, gets its share of shells and sea weed. At low tides, you san walk the sand bar to Myst Island.

By JLBD100 |

Great place to walk & enjoy the ocean. I prefer off season. Very crowded during summer & it takes away from its beauty.

By ModernWanderers |

First time here ... and hopefully won't be the last!

Came near low tide, so had a chance to walk out to Charles (?) Island. Lots of teenagers smoking weed on the island, so headed straight back to the more family- and kid-friendly beach area.

Fantastic long boardwalk along the beach, with lots to see along the way. Birds nesting so many protected areas where one shouldn't walk. Quite crowded for 7pm, but probably to be expected due to the 90o day.

Great for picnics, kite-flying, bbqs, strolls/jogs, and general lazing around. Fabulous way to end the weekend!

By Jane M |

A hidden Gem. Beaches are wide and clean, Charles Island is accessible during low tide (book a guided tour with the Audubon Society) Ample parking and free

By Glenn L |

Great beach and views of Charles Island. Good for exploring on trail, boardwalk, and she'll collecting. Also good spot for birders. State of CT adding new facilities in 2019.

By Providence_RITom |

I've loved going here for years - it's a relatively low-key, peaceful beach and not extremely crowded like other beaches. The sand is full of broken shells so it's best to wear swim shoes or flipflops. The causeway to Charles Island is fun during low tide. And the long boardwalk connecting it to Walnut Beach is just great, especially in the off-season. It too bad the state is going to add concessions, changing rooms etc and start charging a parking fee - it'll change the whole feeling and dynamic of this place, for the worse, I believe.

By kansasphotogal |

Not great for swimming at low tide but very peaceful. I great place to walk or just telax. You can walk out to a small island or along the boardwalks.

By Jen63 |

There is a small hike from the parking lot to the beach, but it was worth it.
Once at the beach, it was not crowded and was very relaxing.
If it is low tide, a walk to the small island is great for calorie burning.

By Mssftnss |

A great walk on the boardwalk near the beach and the marsh. I heard there are plans to put buildings here and I hope this is not true.

By Lj G |

A great place to go for an afternoon stroll to relax and take in the breezes off long island sound. The weekends are usually packed with beach goers enjoying nice weather.Stay all day or go for a walk along the boardwalk either way take in all the beauty around you.

By Clashing with L |

This is a very nice beach and a state park, however the boardwalk is ridiculously long. There is no way to go around the boardwalk.

By Catherine S |

Nice sandy beach with a gong boardwalk.Awesome place to stroll the beach and enjoy the sights. Plenty of parking and picnic tables

By Maritimes |

Not a beach for children.Sand is full of broken shells. Water is also full of shells and dirty. Must wear water shoes at all times. No washrooms or showers...only smelly portable toilets. There are certainly nicer beach options in the area.

By Ally T |

Came for a few hours to relax. The beach is the attraction. There is a nice boardwalk and ample parking and potable potties, but not much else to this park.

By BASTripper |

We had a lovely walk on the boardwalk and saw some brant geese. Just perfect for an off season stroll. We’ll be back in the spring to see the wildlife in the sea grass.

By 2BTRAVLIN |

Love the park but why wouldn’t I? I live near it.
Especially on a summer morning, sipping a cup of coffee, watching from the deck - the Egrets fishing in Great Creek, deer in field and sometime you hear the gobbles of turkeys in the marsh. There are the joggers, the walkers, people with their dogs enjoying their mornings. Love the board walk, especially in the fall, the air is brisk and the sound of water rushing against the shore, melancholy but soothing. It makes me happy. Sometimes on a walk I just sit on a bench and watch the gulls and the water.
So what if it once was a dump. It is being reclaimed and a piece of heaven in Milford.

By dgarz0ne |

Very nice beach and recreation area
Might need a Milford CT resident sticker for parking
Enjoy!! Not the Atlantic Ocean rather LI Sound so safe for young children

By Special_Deluxe |

I cannot give an impartial review of this area since my earliest memories were looking out on the expanse of water while walking along the sand to the island. Please be careful to look up when low tide is, and then make sure you leave the main shore well BEFORE low tide. Thus you will leave a safe margin of time to walk out to the island and back. Too often I see people walking to the island and they don't have a clue whether the tide is coming in or going out. Also, the moon has an effect on whether the low tide is truly low, allowing more time before the bar gets covered up. Do not underestimate the rip tide current if the bar does start to get covered and you think you can wade back. Best to stay put on the island, regardless of the weather and temperature... wait for the next low tide to walk back. Marvel at the nature along the way. The birds, the many creatures living in shells, the crabs including the horse shoe crabs. If it is mating season for the horse shoe crabs and you see an unfortunate one that someone turned upside down, please do not be afraid of it. Pick it up by the tail and flip it over on its right side again. You will have saved an ancient life.

Silver Sands State Park just keeps on getting better and better! Beautiful area, lots of walking areas to enjoy the views and the water. Great place for a picnic, watch the tides go in and out, and of course the beautiful sunsets!

By regina mary |

I've been in the summer but it is just as good in the winter. They have wooden pathways and bridges that were mostly cleaned off. It was beautiful and so much fun. The perfect pandemic day.

By MICHELLE K |

Long Island sound! Clean on sand and beach, huge walkway. Summers over concert series!
Has a pavilion for consents. Food trucks and the Greek spot close by.

By Christine R |

Came here one morning to meet the sun. Wasn't disappointed. Very clean.

At low tide you can find countless amounts of shells. Great boardwalk.

By Ekimotcer |

Clean and nice place to walk. always does my morning jogs/walking in this place. Quiet and clean. You can even walk to Charles Island in a low tide. The only downside, too many shells and sand are not as powder as you’ll expect.

By Samantha N |

I love coming here for a quiet day at the beach. There are a lot of options here- walking along the sand bar, walking on the boardwalk, collecting seashells, catching some sun etc.. Always a good time and a low key environment.

By GRANDTD |

Love Silversands!!! Relaxing walk in the boardwalk with a few stops to look for shells. Very peaceful the day we want. Parking is great . Overall this is a gorgeous place to visit and have a relaxing time p, even a picnic!

By Dorothy T |

Best day best weather made my afternoon after leaving work enjoyable and relaxing met up with some friends and just enjoyed their company

By Paula B |

Great for a morning jog. I did not get a chance to see Charles Island but maybe on the next visit I will make it out there.

By P&K9219 |

What a beautiful place to go and relax. Sometimes I go to have lunch in my car at the beach. I see many many people come in to enjoy the beach. It's very clean and scenic. The parking lot fills up extremely quickly so people need to be sure to come early. I believe at this point only Milford residents are able to come due to Covid-19.

By John W |

Easy walk on the boardwalk, with nice breezes off the Long Island sound. Time it with low tide, and walk out to Charles Island.

By Melissa C |

View was gorgeous. Didn't walk the whole boardwalk but it looked pretty long. Pretty rocky in many areas. Didn't swim, so no idea what the water is like. Kites were flying and there was fishing. Mostly went to try seaglass hunting. Found a few pieces of dark orange and Emerald green sea glass.

By dogfishead |

Nice sandy beach and the water is clean. limited facilities but the entrance is free so what would you expect. Charles island is closed when it is warm enough to swim and it is easy to get stuck there at high tide. There is not much to see as all past structures have been flattened long ago by storms. There is a bit longer of a walk from your car to the beach than you might expect so plan accordingly

By ohsoirish11 |

A beautiful sandy, shell covered beach. Long wooden and poly boardwalks take you over the marsh and across the beach. Clean! Not many people around as it was October. Plenty of portapotties around.

We had lunch on the chairs and then We went to the beach when there was very little water on shore so we went upto the island and roamed around it but it has nothing. The best part was it was soothing as the sun sets and the water has completely took over the road to the island. All in all a good place to stay cool and have some refreshing views.

This beach is easy to get to as it's just off route 1 in Milford. The parking can be a bit iffy on a hot August day, but I have always been able to find a parking spot. The facilities are minimal. There are only port a potties.
The beach is accessed by a boardwalk. It's not a bad way to spend some time reading a book by the water.

By morewierd |

It has been MANY years since we've been here............lived in Trumbull for 18 years....Milford for 2 years......and then headed out West to paradise in 2002.

But we were on the East Coast for 20 days visiting friends and family and looking up our old haunts. HAD to stop here.............WOW has it changed.

The best part for us was walking the boardwalk. Yes there were peoples on the beach, but no one was in the water.

The walk from the parking lot was a non-issue for us...rather enjoyed it.

if you can plan your trip to coincide with low tide it reveals a shell covered sand bar with easy access to Charles Island. This island is a nesting ground for Heron and Egrets through most of the year. During our visit we also saw many canada geese and two oyster catchers (birds). There are many colorful seashells between the main beach and charles islands. The island supposedly has a history with Capt Kidd and buried treasure.

This park is easy to access and unlike many parks in Connecticut it's free to access. There is a boardwalk connecting Silver Sands State Park with Walnut beach (10 minute walk).

definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

By Michafog13 |

The beach and the boardwalk are very clean and inviting. We visited in the winter right before a storm and it was very windy. The sand was nice and golden, not too many shells. You get a nice view of the whole beach and the small island not too far off. The surrounding park has benches and picnic tables where you can eat or just lounge while smelling the ocean waters. I understand that it gets very crowded during the summer but it was nice to walk and enjoy the view.

By Laurelbeach |

Parking is easy and free. The boardwalk was rebuilt and is easy to walk on. There are benches to sit on and enjoy the Long Island Sound and beach. Relaxing place to visit.

By Dmonaco62 |

The beach walk way is a great spot for some power walking with beautiful scenery of the water. No dogs allowed though.

By slawd76 |

My favorite place for a sunset walk on the boeardwalk while listening to the seagulls and smelling the sea air.

By ItIsSunny |

Parking is free and, after leaving the parking lot, the paved & wooden walkways are well-kept. The walkways do drop abruptly into the sand, causing an unexpected drop & twisted ankle if you're not watching. The only toilet was a portable type in the parking lot. There were a few benches from which one could sit and watch the beautiful shoreline. Nice place to walk. Beaches were well-maintained.

By LucindaPORANGE_CT_ |

I hadn't been to Silver Sands State Park in a few years, and I was very impressed with how clean the beach was and plenty of room to spread out. It didn't feel even though there were many people. The fun part was walking, at low tide, to Charles Island which was on my "bucket list" for years. I was always afraid I wouldn't get back before the tide came in, but they post the times that you can safely go across to visit. Even though I only live 10 minutes away, in another city, I felt like I was on vacation at a resort because of the beautiful boats/yachts all around and beautiful views no matter where you look. It is breathtaking.

By Road573540 |

Milford is a beautiful town! We enjoyed dinner at Gippers (sports bar) and had a fun chat with the owner. Took a walk on the boardwalk and shore of Silver Sands State Park. It would have been amazing to walk all the way to Charles Island but not possible with the tide. It was fun and so peaceful.

By Jin C |

This is a nice beach with a well-maintained boardwalk. It's a quite a long walk (especially under the sun on a hot day) on the boardwalk to the actual beach from the parking lot. Also, on a weekend in late July, the beach and boardwalk were quite crowded with people unlike in a lot of the photos shown here. The scenery is worth the trek though!

By CarolTop |

I really loved when this place was called Silver Beach and owned by the town where you could drive along the water park and go to the beach. The boardwalk is nice, But it's a walk to get to the water. I grew up in this town and I used to love to just park at the beach and watch the water and have the beach right there.

By CATTSAR |

Even on a gloomy day this beach was appealing. Serving as a great local beach it is not overly developed or over groomed. There is a great boardwalk that takes you through the marsh and tidal pools allowing for a great stroll any time. In the distance is Charles Island Natural Area.

By Popcorncora |

I say "hidden gem" because as of summer 2018 this was a NO CHARGE state beach/park! Great boardwalk, regular (perfectly fine) porta-potties. There are some additions/improvements that the state is doing (not that it needed anything) so I'm hoping they're not going to start to charge. Picnic tables on a grassy area where you can fly your kite and enjoy lunch. Ample parking.

By Jill L |

Really enjoyed my last visit to Silver Sands! Spent time walking out to the island that you can only reach during low tide. Had a nice walk around there, then walked back in so we could stroll the boardwalk.

By SDP556 |

Very nice beach and boardwalk, water seemed clean. A very nice area to visit. We didn’t stay long because the beach was closing shortly after we arrived!

By TravelingReese |

This beach is great to walk on and catch some sun and enjoy the atmosphere. The sand/ beach is extremely rocky and filled with shells. I would not suggest walking barefoot even in the water. I do not go in water I cannot see through so I knew I would not go in. I would not suggest putting a towel down either its quite rough. Chairs are best. This beach is good for fishing and catching clams, muscles and other small shelled creatures. Another great aspects is that they do not charge for parking but I got there after 7pm Friday so I could be wrong. Also saw people taking wedding photos there.

By Jennifer O |

Easily accessible beach with well maintained boardwalks. Clean beaches and never ending views were just what this family needed after a long winter.

By Tecla M |

This is a park so nothing commercial. The parking was plentiful, close in parking is handicapped only. Nice board walk to the beach from parking.
Abundant shells can be a bit tough on your bare feet but also lots of shells to explore. The hidden treasure appears at low tide when the sandbar comes above water and you can walk to the island!

By THGroup |

A beautiful place with very knowledgeable, friendly park service members..lot's of small wild life ...We had a blast with our kids... thank you so much......

By CTtraveler777 |

This was our first time at Silver Sands State Park. After all the rain that we have had recently we needed to get out and get some fresh air. It was a very comfortable breezy Sunday morning with just a few people at the park. More visitors came around noontime. What a treat! Lots of shells and the marsh was golden in color. Will definitely go back and explore some more!

By Avi K |

This place is really good for picnics (they have wooden benches). Also, they have a beach area. The coolest thing is that the beach has a peninsula (land becomes a strip, with ocean on both sides). Be careful...this is not the best Beach for barefoot walking....it is a Rocky Beach with lots of sea shells on the shore. There are improvement opportunities in the picnic areas...the tables could use some shade, and the picnic area could use some trash cans...to avoid having to walk back to the parking lot to dispose of garbage.

By June M |

Nice beach to relax on, free entry and free parking. The walk from the parking lot to the beach is a little long if you have mobility issues. You can swim at your own risk after the lifeguards leave for the day. I appreciated that. At low tide you can walk out quite a ways on the sand bars.
We ate seafood at Seven Seas restaurant afterward. All in all a nice day trip.

By Budget Traveler |

Only positive is nice long boardwalk and free parking. Other than that it's an average beach with no other facilities or attractions. Being Milford on I-95, If city can develop it like Hammonasset state park, it will be a big crowd puller against those packed long island beaches and nice stop on I-95. Water is not great for swimming here.

By modlifer |

Want to collect shells and park for free? This is the place for you. Piles and piles of shells. Want clean water? Well, keep looking.

By RDM777777 |

We went to Silver Sands State Park to walk along the shore by the Long Island Sound. It was a beautiful beach with lots of opportunities to pick up pretty shells! There are very long stretches of boardwalk at various locations at the shore. The beach was very clean and there is plenty of parking. The sea gulls are very friendly there as well as the other birds we saw (Plovers). If you love to walk along the beach at the shore this is a great beach to do so!

By decostanza |

This is a beautiful beach with an interesting history. It is a state park set on many acres of property which is home to deer and rabbits and probably a fox or two. At one time there were residences here which were taken over by the state by public domain. A brave, crusty, old woman named Doris Gagnon refused to cede her property but returned home one day to find that her house had been razed. So she lived on her property in a trailer without electricity or running water where she raised chickens for many years until her death. Many people wanted the park to be named for her. Today the park also houses the local animal shelter. The beach itself is picturesque and there is a nice boardwalk which many people use for their daily exercise. At low tide there is a sandbar ( I think it is called a tombolo) that you can walk to Charles Island which is rumored to have buried treasures left by Captain Kidd. However, you have to either be knowledgeable of the tides or part of a group led by the Audubon Society in order to not get stranded on the island. People who do not know what they are doing have drowned in the riptide. This, however, should not dissuade people from using this beach which is a popular site.

By jandlUk |

Very brief visit in passing. Unimpressed. Limited signage, poor parking facilities. Just a stretch of beach really.

By James M |

Took my 5 and 6 year old grandsons to this beach. It was close to my hotel, may ordinary shells on beach but to the grandkids it was the best. They had an opportunity to see hermit crabs in tide pools, find Horseshoe Crabs and play in the sand. I'm easy to please at my age but to see my son and the kids take it all in was awesome. Also when the tide goes out there is a sand bar that leads you to an island. Be careful you might get stuck on island if your not watching tide

By Kenichi48 |

My wife and I enjoy walking from the parking lot of Silver sands, the boardwalk paralleling Long Island Sound, to Walnut Beach Fishing Pier, then back to Silver Sands parking lot, which is abouit 1.5miles. It's always refreshing.

By Joseph1319 |

A gem close to home. This state park is still in the ruff., no concessions etc. If you want a place to relax during a nice day go to Silver Sands. We love to park and read a book and look out on the Sound. Lots of walkers . The summer weekend are very busy.

By JenAries321 |

This beach is very clean and free all year long. A nice boardwalk that goes to Walnut beach. low tide you can walk out to the island as long as it is permitted.

By MikeI283BL |

I have enjoyed my visits to Silver Sands State Park. Parking is very convenient and found the beach to be gorgeous. It is a bit rocky but has a great ambience to it.

By Robert K |

The boardwalk here is the big attraction. It’s beautiful, new and a great way to see the shoreline. Walking out to Charles Island during low tide is a very cool experience too. I prefer the sand at Walnut Beach better, the beach here is average.

By Catherine D |

I'm so grateful that I live nearby and am able to come here often. Parking is free and the boardwalk is well-kept. The boardwalk leads to Walnut Beach. It is great to walk or run. The beach is nice too and you can see Charles Island. Some people have ventured off to Charles Island, but be careful or at least know when the tide is coming in. It is a beautiful place to come to relax and gather your thoughts.

By Michael W |

Hidden away off Route ! in milford is this gem of a beach. Great for all fun family activities and also no activity if that is what suits you..

By horvad |

On a beautiful day, the boardwalk is the perfect place to take kids for a walk. Parking is a manageable distance to the boardwalk, and beach facilities are available nearby. For a good experience, walk all the way west to the pier at Milford's Walnut Beach.

By h0ylandm |

Had no issues with parking, nice walkways to get to the beach. Beach very clean and well maintained.

By Steven M |

Very nice place quiet. Free parking , clean porta potties, nice small Beach. Going back for August of 2017 4 annual Oyster Fest

By Dave P |

Great views, great walking environment for people of all ages. What a transformation since 15+ years ago when the place was a mess.

By itwasfunwhileitlaste |

I visited a half dozen beaches after dropping my daughter off at school and Walnut Beach/Silver Sands were the best with Norwalk being the worst. You can collect seashells on Silver Sands (which has a large nature preserve to explore) or wander up the beach to Walnut Beach which has fewer shells and finer sands.

By DCLOrange_CT |

I love taking walks at Silver Sands State Park. Beautiful view and nice boardwalk. Make sure to bring your camera to capture the scenery. Easy free parking.

By Mksolly285 |

We had a great picnic with friends. There are picnic benches provided on the grassy areas, but there's not a lot of shade. The water itself doesn't have me dying to go swimming, but walking along the shore we collected some fun seashells. It's a great beach to hit up close to new haven.

By Marcela M |

Just know that its a GEM! Also, you can not use those big canopies on the main beach. I loved it here.

By SRPFamily |

We visited Connecticut with our family as a weekend trip near the end of the summer last year. This was our last stop prior to heading home. It is a fantastic park with a wonderful beach. Walking the sandbar between the mainland and Charles Island was a special treat.

By Janetoboe |

My husband and I love to visit Silver Sands and walk along the boardwalk down to Walnut Beach. It's about a 2 mile walk round trip, and you can't beat the beautiful view, especially around sunset.

By Chris S |

This park provides picnic facilities and a beach on the Long Island Sound. It has a wooden boardwalk that runs to Walnut Beach which has plenty of benches to sit and soak in this beautiful site. The locals love to talk so stop and say hi. A great place to spend the day.

By Shellyrubenstien |

Nice quiet beach, a little bit of a walk from the free parking lots, there is Handicap parking closer then the other lots are. Clean beach with lifeguards, has volleyball nets for anyone to use. Only facilities are portta-potties. Recommend it for relaxing day at the beach.

By KVJ166 |

We wanted some lazy time during our road trip of New Hampshire and took time out at Silver Sands, I loved the tranquility of the area, the boardwalks make for easy access, the beach is clean and there is plenty of car parking too.

By Wendy Kelly |

Such a pretty beach with gorgeous views.... Plenty of picnic benches and a great little gem to visit! Plenty of parking and a nice place to enjoy Milford charm.....

By martingreen2017 |

This beach is a little small by the standards of beaches on the northeast, but it has a nice board walk and a small community nearby. You can see Charles island from the beach. The sand is a little rocky there is always a pile of fresh sea weed and debris. It does not smell bad and has a nice breeze.

By Nicole |

First time here and it was a cool beach. A long boardwalk. It was low tide when we went so we could go out far and collect shells and rocks

By Frank F |

With the many improvement, it looks as if there'll be more parking available. I wish they could screen the beach areas. Also some additional jon's would be nice too. I think they should do a debris and metal clean up of the water areas. A lot of unsafe pipes and such in areas people my go. Also, block off ramps where there are not landing or dangerous landings.

By Christenthia L |

I would love to return here in the summer. This is a beautiful spot for any activity - a romantic stroll, an upbeat run, a quite place to sit and watch the sun set or listen to birds or read. And of course, I’m sure during the summer it’s a great place to go swimming. I liked it here a lot.

By Robert M |

Had a great walk on the board walk. It was a warm day but the ocean breeze made it quiet comfortable. The walk is short (1.5 miles) compared to Seaside park (4 miles). Free access after Labour Day.

By jmurphybrown |

Nice shoreline beach, accessed without need for permit or cash. Great view of Charles Island and nice boardwalk. No permanent washrooms, just porta potties.

By diceccod |

Daughter wanted to experience the walk out to he island. unfortunately we got there around high tide so we did not have a chance to go...but we walked along the boardwalk for a few miles and back again. it was okay...nothing great and nothing bad really designed for sun bathing and fishing. cannot go swimming out there

By Wendy M |

Have to stop and pause for a moment on this gorgeous stretch of beach just outside of historic downtown. It has a spit of land that reaches an island during low tide. Well maintained and good facilities.

By Valeria I |

My bf got off work early so we decided to go check it out. He hadn't been there in years so he was pleasantly surprised how nice it was. We made the trek to Charles Island during low tide. We admired lots of beautiful sights. We saw an egret, neat shells and stones, and a beautiful sunset. We also walked the long boardwalk as the tide came back in. We took some awesome pics.

By Adventure Diva |

Located in Long Island sound in Milford, this park has acres of beach, dunes, salt marsh, grassland and an open area of woods to explore.

By domfig |

Great place to spend the day, bring the family or walk on the boardwalk. Be careful going out to the island, make sure and know the tides.

By Lucas W |

Make sure what time the tides are so you can walk to the island. Nice beach. Not crowded. Free parking although they put up new booths.

By Christian M |

Nice beach not the biggest but still very nice has a great view of a island nice big boardwalk over the marsh has picknick area all in all great place for a family day

By CarolTop |

I used to love cruising by Silver Beach, years ago. You could park and go on the beach or just cruise and enjoy the shoreline. Now that the state owns it, it's hard to access...you've git to park a long distance away and walk to get even close to the water. I liked it better when you could drive by and enjoy the shore. Too bad. And so very horrible about the terrible fire. Hope at least they can rebuild.

By Brooklyn |

Beautiful place to take a walk. We actually were able to take really nice photos on the rocks. The area is very pleasant.

By pjtj2012 |

My wife and I like to take walks on the boardwalk that connects Silver Sands to Walnut Beach. Evening walks here are great even on the hottest days because you get the ocean breeze and the scenery is beautiful.

By Suni33 |

Our family stopped in for a quick visit. What a lovely beach! Great boardwalk, parking is awesome, and views are awesome. Picnic tables nearby, too.

By Chelsea G |

I've been going to this beach for a long time. It just gets better and better. Free parking. A beautiful clean beach & a boardwalk to walk to Walnut Beach.

By Curt K |

If you are seeking a location to get some exercise the boardwalk at Silver Sands is a great place. The City of Milford and the State of CT have done a great job converting a former garbage dump, yes dump into a scenic location its views to Charles Island and dunes.

By CarlaZ513 |

Nice boardwalk along the beach. Perfect for an afternoon stroll to soak up the sun and sand. We took some food with us and had a little picnic on the benches. Beware of parking violations. If you don't have Connecticut plates, you have to pay a $15 parking fee for out of state plates. We were only there for an hour and didn't pay, but saw the parking police issuing citations.

By Stephsea |

We made a few visits here in Oct/November 2017. This is a great place to enjoy the beach and beautiful views! You could make this a daily routine walking or jogging along the board walk or beach. Or if you time it right when the tide is out walk across to Charles Island on the sandbar! Unfortunately I was never able to time it right but its still a great place to visit!

By eve09092014 |

If you like small beaches, this is a place for you. The beach isn't crowded, which is good, but if you need to use a restroom, you have to leave the beach and walk to nearest parking lot, where you can find a portable toilet. I didn't see any shops around, so I was glad for bringing water and snacks with me.
Other than that, this is a clean beach, with lots of shells and crabs.

By Michael B |

The boardwalk at Silver Sands is a wonderful way to get some exercise and see nature at the same time. The boardwalk extends to Walnut Beach where there is a large pavilion as well as picnic tables (note: you can park at Walnut Beach for free if you have a permit sticker). The beach itself is not large and the water is not our favorite for swimming but it lovely for relaxing and reading a book. Note that the gate opens at dawn and they close PROMPTLY at dusk with no second chances or warnings so make sure you are to your car before the sun goes down. They will lock you in.

By Ken D |

We spent a nice day at the Silver Sands State Park. This is not a manicured white sands beach, but it is very nice. The sand is full of shells and rocks, but there is lots of space and the water was great. We walked along the beach for quite a ways in either direction. Highlight of the day was being able to walk on a seashell walkway out to the island at low tide. The island itself is a protected area but you can walk up to the beach there. That was very cool. The only reasons to note mark this a five star was the roughness of the beach due to the multitude of shells and the port-a-potties as the only place to change or to to the bathroom. But for free, this is a great deal!

By calypsoray |

The park was free, construction did not effect access, park was thriving with wildlife, and it was exciting to see the direction the park is going! Great place!

Question, does anyone know what the first picture was built for years ago?

By Gary K |

Love going for walks at Silver Sands. Quiet, peaceful, great view of Charles Island and Long Island. In the summer, weekends are very busy and the park nears capacity. This is the only state park at this time that does not charge an entrance fee ( state is discussing charging).

By CTMermaid |

If you get there at low tide you can walk a sandbar to Charles Island. The boardwalk is lovely and the parking excellent. Worth a visit.

By Xeuropn |

My son brought us here for a pleasant walk with views of Long Island Sound. Plenty of beaches, parking and fresh sea air. I have been coming to visit here for many years, so it was nice to finally come to the beach,

By neurorad |

Boardwalk on nice beach. Very clean beach. Not often crowded.
You feel like you are vacationing in your own back yard. Great picnic area close to parking. Good area to through around a Frisbee!

By Emily E |

Enjoyed a beautiful walk on the beach. Tons of shells and some good sized pieces of sea glass (mostly brown). Would love to come back in summer! There were mounds of limpet and jingle shells 2 feet tall.

By adventuregurl44 |

How many state parks boast an island that you can actually walk to! Charles Island is the jewel in the crown of Silver Sands. Free parking to boot! Bring your picnic and chairs and watch the sailboats and kite boarders making the most of the breezes. If you plan it correctly you can walk out to the island at low tide but please do consult with a ranger or life guard if you are unfamiliar with the tides and currents. Silver Sands also has a lovey boardwalk that allows you to stroll all the way over to Walnut Beach where you can enjoy home-made ice cream and fresh Maine lobsters. You can also rent kayak, paddles boards and scooters. Really lucky to have the beautiful place.

By vinmarine1 |

The boardwalk at Silver Sands at any point in the year is peaceful, clean and beautiful. The beach itself is kept pretty clean and the trek out to Charles Island (during low tide) is pretty cool too. One of the better beaches and parks in the greater New Haven County area....

By Xeuropn |

Great way to start our morning. We are visiting our son from out of town, and the park is close and convenient. Excellent, well kept boardwalk on the Sound. Wasn’t too busy, but we could see that this is a hot spot for walkers and joggers alike.

By Julia L |

Beautiful views at sunset... no matter which month... living nearby such incredible locations allows one to take them fo granted... such a great place for a walk, and of course, best location for sunset pictures

By Dmax32 |

Long walk from the lot with all your gear. We live local and walk the boardwalk all the time. Disappointed that no kind of enforcement is done on bikes and dogs. Just a free for all.

By TinaConnecticut |

if you want to run without pets and people getting in the way then silver sands is the place to go. It has a great boardwalk and in the mornings its the best time.

By Stacy E |

This beach is great for shell collecting. The water is swallow so not much swimming unless your 2 feet tall. At low tide you can cross the sand bar to an island, that was fun to explore. The boardwalk was fun to explore. There are also lots of crabs and snails which the kids thought were cool. Free parking is a plus.

By Jon L |

I know the main attraction at a beach really should be the beach itself, but here, it's the wildlife. This is a small tucked away park, that was not just impressive for the sand and water and there nice little boardwalk... The backside of the parking lot seems to be like a nature preserve, with lots of turkeys as well as a nice herd of deer. This is not the only time I visited here and had this experience, the presence of the animals as well as the sound of the waves make this a very peaceful place whether you're just sitting to have lunch or taking a nice little walk

By Subhajit Bharadwaj |

Parking js issue and you need permit to park
Water us stale and no waves.no restrooms alo to change.good to stroll

By Martysue |

We spent a lovely summer day at this beach. It's a little rocky but with low tide you can walk out to a small island and explore. Our teen boys thought this was pretty cool. There are picnic tables if you want to bring lunch and stay for the day.

By Cate D |

Peaceful before all the tourists arrive! Love the views of Charles Island, the beach, the boardwalk.
I grew up here, before the state created Silver Sands. Just love it!

By KKSuhre |

Although the weather in late April was still chilly and drizzly at times, we enjoyed the park. The weather cooperated long enough for the hike out to Charles Island on the Tombolo (sandbar) at low tide. We had close up views of nesting geese and white egrets, and many different viewpoints of sea and shoreline as we walked around the island. Seeing the island completely surrounded by water at high tide the next morning really gave a sense of the forces of nature. The park has extensive boardwalks along the beach and through marsh areas, which made for a nice long walk even on a drizzly morning. The beach itself is pebbly and covered with tons of small shells in places. There was construction of some new parking and other facilities going on. The Greek Spot cafe nearby is very nice for a casual lunch or dinner. Presumably the beach has a different vibe on a sunny summer weather with swimming and sunbathing, but in April it was a good place to experience nature.

By Stuti D |

On our visit to New Haven, we discovered Silver Sands State Park. We were there jus before the tides were setting in - so we walked up half the way - caught a beautiful sunset, and then walked back.

I can imagine beautiful photo shoots, a great setting for a wedding.

I am sure summer must bring great outings.

By LauBauMtAiry |

On a whim, my family stopped by here today and we were pleasantly surprised at how beautiful this park was. Long, clean boardwalk, not crowded, free parking, and gorgeous views! Unfortunately we couldn’t do the sandbar walk to the island this time of year (May to August) due to nesting season but that seems really cool!

By Jonathan C. |

We snagged a picnic table under the shade for lunch, then started walking out towards the island. The tides change every day so be sure to check if you want to go so the way out. Got to see some horseshoe crabs as well!

By lovestheheat2014 |

I found this while googling for a beach that had free parking. I was looking for a quick getaway day at a beach that wasn't crowded or noisy. Bingo. Lots of space to choose from. Loved the longer walk up the boardwalk to get to it over the windswept lush sea grasses. Parking spaces plentiful. Light crowds. I got this at a great time for low tide and there was so much space to explore. A little bit of a smell but it was great to see the schools of little fish while exploring the flats. There is a whole other ocean side with more rocks & waves that I did not get a chance to explore. Next time. There were a lot of shells in the sand so be aware. If you are careful walking in these areas it is not an issue.
The construction occurring is not intrusive at all as it is further from the beach.
So as I was not looking for a lot of social interaction, it was extremely aggravating when towards the end of my stay, a family of 8 came and set up not 2 feet away from me. Seriously! The whole expanse of empty areas and they chose to be that close to me. I was speechless. Another beachgoer nearby gave me a chuckle & put up his hands so I knew it wasn't just me being overly sensitive. Why aren't people more considerate of the needs of others? I moved at that point as it was easier then to fight. I
Overall a nice beach experience to avoid crowds and get a beach experience.
Highly recommend The Lazy Lobster nearby for their hot buttered lobster roll as well.

By MikeI283BL |

Great state park to visit in the area. Grounds are well kept and you get a great view of Charles island. Parking fills up fast so be sure to get there early.

By dogfiend |

Boardwalk was wonderful for walking, which is what a group of us went to do. I can’t speak for the beach, other than people looked like they were having a great time. Beautiful views!

By edwardbN7977UG |

I grew up 4 blocks from this beach it is one of kind the chicken lady is no longer there you can walk the sand bar and around the island but the island is off limits

Spent a sunny September morning at the beach. Big parking lot, nice and clean beach and boardwalk. Lots of people having fun at the beach and in the water. At low tide you can walk to the island.

By jciant |

Some parts of this park are currently under construction. Still a lovely place to enjoy the beach , have a barbecue or take a walk.

By adona_williams |

Silver Sands is a nice place to chill and also if you are an avid Volleyball player, this place will not disappoint. Also folks so some swimming in the Ocean. The rock formation by the shoreline was cool.

By Jules A Roth |

It was a great place to explore, and see animals with my 10yr old! Millions of shells on the beach to look at, and she found hermit crabs during low tide.
