Parked the Car in lot in Catawba, purchased round trip tickets for the Miller Ferry. (Showing our shore discount card that we got at the visitors center we received $1 off each of the four tickets we purchased) The ride over was great! We arrived on the island around 1pm( about a 18 minute ride), all 4 person golf carts were sold out at both cart places near the ferry dock. We ended up paying extra for the last available 6 person one, so reserve before you arrive. "E's" was the cheapest, but we ended up with one from "Island Bike and Cart Rental" since "E" was completely sold out. Its quite a walk to the next nearest Cart rental place, which is at the airport. You do have the option to ride a taxi or a bus downtown for a couple bucks to other rental places. Driving the golf cart around the island was the best part of our day. Some good clean fun, tooting horn at passing golf carts, High fiving passing carts, our 17 year old loved joking with people that we passed, telling them their shoes were untied, complimenting people on their attire, hats, shoes, etc...harmless good fun, and the peolpe were having just as much fun with him. The fellow vacationers had so much fun with us, laughing and joking. Don't take your car, rent the golf cart, you won't be sorry, people are there to have fun and let loose, everyone was having a good time and were really friendly. We did notice that the car would have been dificult to get around in and park, very limited parking for cars, it is all golf cart parking. We visited Perry's monument first thing, excellent view, and the rangers gave us a brief recap of Perry's battle... very interesting. We then went to Perry's Cave, very steep, some steps only wide enough for your shoe sideways, not for anyone with walking disability. Cave very small, a little disapointing if comparing to the Caves/caverns in West Virginia, however our two teenagers only remember those caves from photographs so it was still interesting for them. A small antique car museum right next to cave was nice. We then grabbed some lunch at the boardwalk, ate on the top deck, had Taco's and Nacho's, Salsa was a refreshing change from what we usually get. Nice View of Lake. We then drove to some of the museums that we wanted to see but they all close at 5pm. so if you want to visit them, get an start early. We went to Adventure Bay Fun Center, it was not a very happening place at this time, we were the only 4 people riding the go carts, and only about 10 people in the gameroom. We went shopping in town then just drove around in the golf cart - still having a great time. Our 2 boys ( both teenagers) want to go back, just for the fun that we had on the golfcart. We noticed several bridal shower parties, and bachelor parties. Lots of bars, but we were there early, It seems like it could be a rowdy place at night. We boarded the ferry to go back to Catawba at 7:30. Couple places to play putt putt, next time we go it will be easier since we kind of got the jist of where things are at. The entire place was very picturesque. Lots of Mayflies there, but they were harmless.

Had a wonderful day. Rented golf cart. Island Carts needed a credit card which I didn't take so went across the street and to ECarts and they took cash. Printed off coupons off the Miller Ferry website. Also woman was passing out maps and coupons to this golf cart rental as we got off Ferry. Also from Miller's website had a coupon for Dairy Isle for:
Hamburger or hot dog or chicken fingers and side of fries refillable drink and ice cream for $7.00. One coupon could be used for up to 4 people. It was only 2 chicken fingers but with all the rest it was plenty for meal. Couldn't take car for round trip on a Sunday but really had fun on golf cart. $10 per hour with a $65 max for all day. We used for 3 hours. We did no tours or caves or anything just carted around to the State park, nature preserve, walked trails (saw ratsnake) and watched the boats and jet skis.
Was a nice diversion of usual weekend.

Its a great very small island to see. not much of traffic. Rent a club car (Golf cart) and go everywhere in the island. It is the common mode of transport. Of course, you can take your car in the ferry. But, I would recommend renting a golf cart to have a different experience! We loved it. And I have NOT seen any parking issues. There are lot of restaurants. you can do a few fun activities too (Jet ski, cave, butterfly house, mini golf, helicopter ride, etc.) Its a different experience! If you wish/have time, you can go to neighboring islands and back. I would recommend going at least once to have a different experience!

We went to South Bass island for the week Monday thru Friday had a great time. We heard Christmas in July was coming on the weekend and we're happy to have planed to leave as the boats were full for the weekend. Would recommend midweek for families.

First, thank God Topsy Turvey was open or we might have starved.
I had not been to the island in over a decade so a few family members & I decided to go over for lunch and the sites.
We discovered most of the top 10 restaurants were already closed for the season or were only doing a dinner service.
We were there the second Friday of October and 85% of the island was shut down. (No thanks to the Fed. Shut down, but even the private owned sites were shut down.)
When I called to rent golf carts and check on the ferry rates, no one mentioned that nothing would be open. Also make sure the rates are what they quote. I was almost charged an extra $15 for the golf cart. So speak up.
We went looking for coffee & dessert and no one had dessert??????
A very disappointing visit.

I’m the only review of cabents at South Bass Island State Park! We stayed for 3 nights in Cabent 1. There is no a/c or heat but they provided 4-5 fans. There is a couch, chair, & small kitchen, dining table & high top table with chairs. I wish someone had told me to bring the following: cutting board & knife, hand soap for the bathroom, towel for bathroom floor, dish towels, dish scrubber, wine glasses, mixing bowl. The kitchen drinking glasses are like someone’s college collection of mismatched leftovers :) there were 2 pots, 3 frying pans, silverware, plates, 3 soup bowls. They do warn you to bring all your own linens, toiletries etc. In cabent 1, you cannot pull your car or golf cart up to the door, you must walk all of your things 50 feet, but cabent 2-4 have parking in front. There were tons of electric outlets, & plenty of hot water. The cabent is not the cleanest thing ever, but it’s better than tent camping. There were spiders, the dishes were mismatched & semi cleaned. The dining table was dirty. The couch has some stains/ wear. It wasn’t terrible, we just arrived & cleaned. It is camping after all.

South Bass Island is about 3 miles out into Lake Erie from Catawba Island near Port Clinton. The island is about 3.7 miles long and 1.5 miles wide.
U.S. Navy Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry secured its place in American history with his naval victory on September 10th, 1813 during the Battle of Lake Erie after setting sail from Put-in-Bay. Between 11:45 AM and 3:00 PM, Perry’s nine U.S. Navy ships damaged and captured a British Royal Navy squadron of six ships despite being at the big disadvantage of having shorter-range cannon than the British. The victory gave the United States control over Lake Erie for the duration of the war, and Detroit was retaken ~ which were the objectives.
Today, South Bass Island is a tourist mecca for recreation and relaxation. It’s a very laid-back place. It’s Lake Erie’s version of Key West.
The local tourist board encourages people to slow down to island time and rent golf carts and bicycles. That’s fine for those who can go there almost anytime. But, some of the local transportation options can be expensive.
The island is served by two ferry lines ~ Miller Boat Line and Jet Express. I took Miller Boat Line so I could take my own SUV so I could roam the island and see as much as possible in one trip. The R/T for me for $14.00; the R/T for the SUV was $30.00. The total was $44.00. I had the freedom to go places on my own schedule and had no problems finding parking spaces at my destinations.
Major attractions there include Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial, South Bass Island Lighthouse, South Bass Island State Park, and Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center & Put-in-Bay Antique Car Museum, as well as wineries and Stone Cove Beach. There are number of restaurants in the village.
If using Miller Boat Line and plan to tour the island, I suggest taking your vehicle or bicycle because, once on South Bass Island, you’ll need transportation to get to the village and/or attractions ~ most of which are near the other end of the island. Options are hiring a taxi or pedicab, renting a bicycle, moped, or a golf cart for 4, 6, or 8 people. The 4-person golf carts run $60 for weekdays and $70 weekend days. Expensive! Other options include a tour train and a one-destination bus.
The sightseeing Put-in-Bay Tour Train makes stops only at Heineman Winery, Perry Cave’s Family Fun Center, and Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial. Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $4.00 for children ages 6 - 12.
If just going to the downtown area for restaurants and shops, there is the Lime Kiln Bus that goes from the Miller dock to The Depot in the downtown village area for $2.50 each way and puts one within a mid-range walk to Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial.
Although the ferry itself is wheelchair accessible, transportation options once on South Bass Island could be very limited, depending on one’s mobility restrictions. Taking one's own vehicle is probably the best way to go.
There is no shortage of places to stay or places to eat on the island.
Since I had only about half a day on the island, I concentrated on Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial and South Bass Island Lighthouse because I’m a historian and a New England lighthouse preservationist. I also left ample time for exploring, relaxing, people-watching, and dining in the village. I had a Seafood Salad Croissant Sandwich at $14.99 at The Boathouse Bar & Grill on Hartford Avenue in the village.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time on South Bass Island. I would like to return in the near future.

Not to many people know about South Bass island in Lake Erie. Unless you have a boat and can navigate tricky waters I would suggest Miller's Ferry. There is a danger zone from the nuclear power plant to the west that stretches to a national guard camp. All along the way are reefs and you must have a good GPS and map to avoid them. The biggest danger though is inexperienced boaters. Miller's Ferry will take you across for a very reasonable fee along with your vehicle. Don't bring a car if you don't have a hotel or cabin to park it at. Parking is extremely limited and pretty much useless on such a small island laden with golf cart and bicycle rentals. The only drawback to Miller's Ferry is that you don't arrive in downtown, but for 5 dollars or so a person you can take a bus taxi. The Jet Express is overpriced and always overcrowded even though it gets you into downtown. Timing is everything on the island. If this is a family vacation then go in the morning first chance possible. Even by noon you will see drunk 20 somethings stumbling around. The island is filled with many bars (good ones at that), but there is also a family side like the crystal cavern, go karts, and a nice bike ride around the island. If you are going with friends I would suggest a cabin rental or Commodore Perry. The hotel rooms on the island are small and not luxurious by any stretch of the imagination, but you will be spending most of your time outside of it anyways. Don't just stay in the downtown area though check out the island!

We took the Jet Express boat over to the island for the day. Having no knowledge of what was really over there, we were pleasantly surprised to be able to visit the "longest bar in the world", Mojito Bar, Put-in-Bay Winery, Put-in-Bay Brewery, Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial & "the smallest margarita bar". I would have loved to stay longer and do some more bar hopping or even rent a golf cart for the day. There were hundreds of golf carts driving all over the Island. It was busy and crowded since it was 4th of July weekend but still very enjoyable. We stumbled upon a small parade of clydesdale horses delivering budweiser beer to the bars...very cool! Beautiful Island to walk around with a great little park and nice places to sit outdoors in good weather. What a fun time we had!

Take the Miller ferry if your bringing your vehicle over to the island then rent a golf cart & explore. We had a great time walking or riding to the shops & restaurants/bars

Great get-away weekend. Lots of restaurants and bars to enjoy along the harbor. Fun to rent a golf cart to explore the island. The island offers hotels, bed and breakfasts and camping facilities.

We recently moved to Ohio and it was our first trip to this island...infact more like a stop-oveer to Gibraltor island's Stone Lab for work. So we had little time but made the most out of it. The Boardwalk looked like quite a fun place , people were jetskiing, partying in the pretty parks and driving around in their golf carts. The place was very festive and worth several more visits.

Good place to spend the day and better to go in season since end of October is getting pretty sparse.

The adventure starts on the mainland in Port Clinton, OH with the Miller Ferry ride over to the Island. So much fun. Be sure to bring something to fee the seagulls. Much to do on South Bass Island. Plan to take comfy shoes and take your time!

I spent a day with family here. local transport in the island is great, they makes the trip more interesting with history behind every old building and island. Also you will get golf cart to roam around as per your wish.
There plenty of local restaurents and winery are there to enjoy. No fast food chains are present!
The best way to enjoy is go with family or group of friends.

The island is not all about partying. Check out PutInBay.com for virtual tours of the things to do and see while on the island.

The Island is a fantastic place for adults (parents and grandparents) with young kids. Make sure you ride over on the Jet-Express! It is also a great party spot for party-goers of any age. Bars, restaurants, entertainment galore.
However, be careful if you are planning on taking young teenagers there. About all there is for them to do is ride around on a golf cart, eat ice cream, or have dinner.
The Commodore Perry Historical Site and Tower is great, but it only takes about 30 minutes to see it. And, if your teenagers are not interested in History, they won't see the value of the experience.
I just want to make sure no one makes the mistake I did, and take young teenagers to place where there is nothing for them to do.

I agree with others with kids, not much to do. Went over on Miller boat line and rented a golf cart, $20/hour. Perry's cave was a huge disappointment, damp rock hole underground.Butterfly house fun but very warm. The maze thing was OK. Other than that you drive around or eat. Good for couples.

South Bass Island is a unique place! I love almost everything about it, location, atmosphere, every weekend special events (Octoberfest is my favorite weekend of the season) and islanders. The only thing I dislike is the fact that some popular weekends (especially Christmas in July) attract party craving crowds and the downtown turns into madness. If you want to come with family or you are not into heavy drinking, try to avoid these particular periods.

This was me and my wife fourth trip to South Bass Island in the past 15 years and have always had a great time. We've been there twice by ourselves and twice with our children both times we found plenty to do this was me and my wife fourth trip to South Bass Island in the past 15 years and have always had a great time. We've been there twice by ourselves and twice with our children both times we found plenty to do for us and our family. Lots of bars lots of restaurants lots of activities for the kids but but swimming all kinds of things to do I would recommend going.

South Bass is a tail of two islands. One is the weekend getaway for the drinking and boating party set. That is not my scene. I, on the other hand, love to get to know the local culture, piece together the history, visit the graveyard to see who settled the island, have conversations with people out and about behind the scenes. This is a wonderful, Great Lakes Island, but you have to get beneath the crazy party scene to find it.

I know COVID had to hit them hard, but a lot of places closed down and service in the bars/hotel/shops were not very good. T&J's Smokehouse isnt open and for sale if you got 3+ Million and $$ and time to fix it up. Dont get me wrong, our group had a blast, but if you were there pre-COVID, I am told it still working its way back. Just need people willing to work!

My son and I decided to splurge and go to put in bay. We drove about an hour from our home to Miller's Ferry. We heard the ferry hit its horn. We thought that it meant last call. No, it was leaving. Upon running to find this out, we ran into puddles of water from waves crashing over onto the pavement. It gave me time to take my socks off. The ride over on the ferry was a bit windy. Not bad though. The ferry price is 7.50 each way per person. This really isn't bad considering that their only competitor is the Jet Express which costs more. When we got to the island we decided to go E's Put-in-bay golf carts. We used a coupon to get $5 off. Golf cart prices can be expensive for some - between 40-60. But we did enjoy driving around on the golf cart and it did add a lot to the experience of the whole trip. We drove around downtown to get an idea of what to look at and see and do. We walked a bit and the smell of BBQ drove us to T & J's Smokehouse. We ate outside. The service was just fine. There was like only a few other patrons here at the time. We both had the BBQ brisket entree with fries and coleslaw. Boy, I was impressed with the portions they gave you and the flavor was really good. It put a smile on my face. From there we checked out a few shops (got my car decal) walked over to Perry's Monument (didn't go up it) and then headed to go Perry's Cave area. We did not go in Perry's Cave. We did look at the antique museum - 5 mins worth of looking at some very unique and old cars and items. We did play putt putt. I did not win - that one hole got me. We did not go in the butterfly house. We did stop by the winery and had two samples and looked at the geodes. We did not do the maze or the Crystal Cave. We did stop at the chocolate museum. I did buy a shirt. We then headed back towards town. We decided on The Beer Barrel Saloon. A guy was playing live music on the patio. We each had a drink then we had a strawberry shot (vodka). We drove around some more and looked at the various venues. We even drove around the island and tried to get lost. But we didn't get lost. We got back into town and said let's have one more drink. We decided on Last Resort Engine Company. It is a unique venue. It's a firetruck turned into a bar. As a former firefighter it was neat to be able to sit on a stool with Wakeman fire department coat on it. They have helmets from all over. The bar stools are extinguishers and coats. They have tv screens to view also. But we had really good Jim Beam and cokes and got to keep the cups. We headed back to the ferry then drove home and made it home in time for dinner. A nice trip with my son. You can do more or you can do less. It was nice to go when it was not a crazy drinking atmosphere that we might have found on a weekend.

We had a great day here. We have 2 young children and took our bikes over on the ferry so we did not have to rent a golf cart. It was much cheaper to do and saved a lot of time having to wait for a golf cart. We stopped and got a map and spent the day exploring the island. There was a great playground in the downtown area for the kids to play on. We also played mini-golf, visited Perry's Monument, watched planes at the airport, and did some shopping. You could spend at much money or as little money as you want here depending on what you planned to do.

Summer travels take us aboard our 40 ft. sailboat. Put-in-bay is a day's sail from Detroit. We like to anchor in the bay...attached to mooring ball. Fee is $30/weekday night $40 on weekends. The fee includes unlimited use of their shuttle to and from the island, its entertainment and restaurants. Swimming from the boat is fine. If going on a weekend plan to arrive early Friday because the mooring anchorage will fill up. There is fuel and pump out available but no potable water at the gas dock. There are other "docks" available for overnight stays that have drinking water and electricity dockside.
We were weathered in for 5 days this summer....not our plan...but amused ourselves with all the island activities.

We love our time away on Ohio's great island getaway. This is a very friendly and great adult getaway. It is close to home (Cleveland) and yet it helps things get so far away.

I've been to South Bass and Put-in-Bay (the only town on the island) several times, and I always can't wait to go back again. If you go during the week, there's less of a Spring Break vibe. I don't go to bars, so I can't speak to that side; when I go I camp at the South Bass Island State Park. During the week it's not as loud, and is quite pleasant. I always get a cliffside site (#s 112-117) - only tents are allowed on those sites. You can rent kayaks or jet-skis at the dock. The only things I don't like about the campground are 1) Mayflies can really dampen your enthusiasm if it's a heavy year, and 2) The beach at the park has stones instead of sand. Bring your water shoes!
I also really like "downtown" Put-in-Bay. There are quaint shops, and restaurants with lots of seafood overlooking the bay. (I've reviewed a few on TA). There's Perry's Monument to visit, but I like to go to Perry's Cave and Crystal Cave on the way into town - I love caves & rocks! My mom says the winery tour is great, and she goes every year.

I have been going to Put in Bay for 30 years by boat and car, and air. There is one thing to remember about Put in Bay. There is a party at every bar in town And any other place there is. There 's plenty of these bars where ever you go. The main sport is drinking. There are plenty of just 21 year olds that don't drink and are there to drink. This is not a place for kids in the town area. In the past it was not unusual to have fights. Dont take this as a attack on the town, this has been going in for years. My wife and I have been enjo0ying the Island for a long time. If you are staying on the island you will have a goodtime because you have a escape from all the crazies in town. See the whole Iisland by a golf cart they are rented on both side of the island. Suggest you go early. Lunch at the Upperdeck of the Boardwalk. The island is one big party. It starts on Memorial Day and ends on Labor Day

My husband and I decided that we wanted to get away for a few days and decided on PIB. Neither of us had ever been there, but heard great things from friends. So I started doing my research on Trip Advisor.
When first starting out, I wasn't very impressed with the reviews on the hotels in the area. Mainly loud party hotels that aren't kept very nice. We weren't looking for the party scene, we wanted relaxation. Maybe this isn't the place for us?? When I was about to scrap this trip and find somewhere else, I just by chance looked at a Bed In Breakfast. (Not our usual thing. We like our own bathroom and privacy.)
I found that they get great reviews!! And they also have private baths and privacy. Now one thing, they don't have an actual breakfast. So know that before hand. Anyhow so we decided to stay at the Ahoy Inn. The price was great. They rooms nice. So close to town. We rented a golf cart and cruised all over the island. It was great. We ate some really great food and just had a blast. We were so glad we didn't scrap this trip. I can say that I don't think I'd go go during the weekend and major tourist season if partying is not your thing. We enjoy having our drinks and relaxing, but some of the stories of the craziness we heard from locals just isn't our thing. We will definitely be coming back as it's only a few hours away. We just will make sure it's a weekday.. lol

A great island to explore on your bicycle or rent a golf cart or take your car with you. There are many things to do and see on the Island from Perry's Monument to wineries, to exploring the island on a bicycle or golf cart to water sports. Nightlife is a big activity on the island, which has many bars and live entertainment.

Always nice to visit - nice laid back atmosphere - fun for family during the day or adults at night.

I have been a long-time visitor at the island, always something new to discover. So much to fill your days, and nights. Wineries. Food. Fun.

Loved Put In Bay. If you go during the week it’s fairly family orientated. Our kids loved it too. I would avoid it at the weekends, it becomes a tourist hell with a lot of drunk people. The ferry over to the island is fun and very efficient and clean even if its a bit expensive. Great choice of restaraimts to eat in and visit. Some fun bars as well. Away from the center the island can be really peaceful and calm as well.

This was our third time back to the island in 6 years. Many things remained the same - shops, dining, parks - which was awesome. One thing changed, however, and that was the demographic. Younger, more obnoxious individuals seem to have taken over the northern side of the island. Loud, smoking (cigarettes and weed), inconsiderate (stopping carts in the middle of the street to talk to their friends, profanity), no consideration with the individuals driving the carts for pedestrians (almost hit twice in a crosswalk). Not sure if this is just a one off because of the COVID release or if these morons are here to stay. If the latter, I'd definitely recommend another location. Highly disappointed this go around.

We go to the island a couple of times every summer. There are several good restaurants (The Boardwalk, The Round House for chicken), more than enough great bars, a winery, and lots of local Ohio history. Rent a golf cart or bike and ride around the island at your own pace. You can take your car over on the ferry but parking is a pain in the summer months with all the people. On weekends at night it gets a little crazy and not what I would call family friendly. If you want to avoid that go during the day or during the week.

This was our first visit to lake erie and we will be back. We took the jet express from port clinton to put in bay for the day. We rented golf carts and toured the island to sight see. We stopped at wineries and a couple of parks. Kids loved it, we had the best time. Only regret was we only planned a half a day , we could easily have stayed all day or even over night. Kids called it the miami of the midwest ! We will be back!

We enjoy going to South Bass, there is always something to do or see as you tour around, things are changing, new homes being built and construction going on. There are beaches open to the public, some bar/hotel pools open to everyone. We enjoy going thru the week instead of the weekends, less crowded and not as much of a "party crowd". If you like the young party atmosphere, I would suggest the weekends for you.

The island is so lovely and picturesque. There are many things to see and do while there. You definitely need to rent a golf cart as that is the primary way around the island. We did the train tour and it was outstanding!! So fun to learn about the history while seeing the sights!

We went on a Tuesday with my 65 yr old parents and a 12 and 13 kids and had a nice time. The island is quaint. I'd recommend getting s golf cart to ride around in. We were told not to bring kids on the weekends because it gets really wild with parties but it was fine during the week. Lots of cute shops, homes and restaurants.

Been going here for 20+ years and have had a house on MBI for ~15 years. There is something for everyone, history, family and plenty of bars. From afternoon (adult humor) entertainment to quieter places and/or golf carts and bike rentals. There is jet ski and kyak rentals, swimming beachs and small golf courses. If you don't find something to do for fun you must not have gone beyond the boat that got you there. And even then, depending on what you used you still would have found something fun.

We stayed in port Clinton and then took the ferry over for a day and had an amazing day! We took the first ferry over, had breakfast and then hit the main attractions, like the caves, the wineries and then restaurants. We were finished with the main attractions around dinner time and then drove the golf cart around the island and had some drinks after that until it was time to leave. I think one day is about all you need to visit everything, but the island is truly beautiful and there’s lots of little parks all around. I definitely recommend renting a golf cart to get around, it’s super fun! There’s not a ton to do for families with children, but a lot for adults! This is definitely a great spot for a weekend getaway!

I would recommend taking advantage of the large & free parking lots located near the ferry to the island. It is just $14 round trip per person to the island and there are many golf cart rental locations within walking distance when disembarking on the island. The island itself is flat & very easy to get around. At high tourist season it would not be easy getting around the island in a car.
There are many hotels and restaurants to fit your pallet & wallet. Many boat docks. I would say a fresh water boaters paradise. For landlubbers, the Oliver Perry Memorial & trip to the winery would be highlights.
A safe day trip for children...

Overall it's a nice island, but is definitely a party joint on Friday and Saturday evenings. The downtown scene is probably not a good place to take the kids on these dates, but the rest of the time it's fine.

It is hard to beat the Great Lakes, They are amazing! Every person that can should see them at least once. South Bass Island is an easy place to start. We had a beer at the brewery and the kids played in the park. Everyone loved the put-put golf. The golf carts were fun and the water was beautiful. We camped, shopped, had desserts, and wished we had another day. It was a perfect spot for our group, most of us had kids, but a few of us didn't. It worked well. If you are offended by alcohol another place might be a good idea, but it is my kids that are pushing me to plan another trip here, not the adults.

I would suggest that anyone who has a few hours to rent a golf cart and explore this lovely island!
It’s not just about partying and loud music as some would assume. There are amazing restaurants and wonderful happy customer service. Nooks and crannies await you!

This was our first trip as a family. Traveled on a Tuesday so it was a little more calm. Enough for the kids too do. Had a great time. Friendly people.

My dad, my brother and I go camping at East Harbor in Marblehead around the 4th of July every year and make our trip to South Bass/Put N Bay on the fourth during the camping trip. Let me begin by saying that this place is NOT INTENDED TO BE FOR FAMILIES (or at least that's not the priority for 75% of those who visit the island). That's not to say that there aren't family activities to enjoy, but family things play second fiddle to what most people (us included) do on this island...... chill out, and enjoy some beers with some friends (perhaps bar hopping in the process). You don't come to this island without money. It is expensive but it is what it is. If you do want to bring the kids to the Island I suggest getting here in the morning (before 10) and leaving by 4 PM. Take a trip to the top of Perry's Monument (this year 2017 however, you can't because I think theirs construction in progress), visit the monument's visitor center, check out the world's largest geode, check out the butterfly place. There's camping at the State Park on the back side of the Island and you can also visit the Lighthouse which occasionally offers tours and trips to the top I believe. The reason most folks go there is to enjoy the alcohol and musical entertainment offered by the numerous bars on the main strip. I highly recommend the chicken at the chicken patio next to the roundhouse, as it is very good (so it's not cheap). The waterfront bar at the Boardwalk is a cool place to enjoy a beer (my favorite place, as I enjoy being close to the water). The perch as well as the crab bisque at the Boardwalk are very good ($$$). Love this island. Wouldn't be summer without at least one trip to south bass/put n bay. If you're going here for the first time, just understand what you're getting into, it's expensive, and there's plenty of alcohol (which is perfectly fine). Don't like that? Don't go.

I’ve been coming here for 38 years! Please don’t forget your history, don’t loose what makes this island unique. STOP the Caribbean take over! This is not Florida or the Caribbean. Stop the tiki bars, keys, margarita bars, and palm trees. Stand tall and strong against the palm island takeover. Build a gazebo instead of a tiki hut!!!
We can still have fun!
Concerned visitor

Having never been to Put In Bay, I neglected to look up the events scheduled for the weekend of our arrival. It turned out to be the 3rd Annual Jeep Invasion. Needless to say, there were jeeps everywhere you looked. Some were quite impressive and my son loved seeing them. You know someone is a serious jeep enthusiast when their child has a mini version to match their parents Rubicon!!! Some serious amount of cash spend on some of the jeeps we saw. People looked like they were having alot of fun and even though LOTS of alcohol was flowing, everyone seemed pretty respectful. Very happy there was no repeat of violence from last weekend!!
South Bass State Park is a nice state park. The staff are very helpful and welcoming. Monica is amazing and very knowledgeable about area. Stayed 1st night on ADA compliant Site 43B, literally right next to bathhouse and showers. It has a full concrete pad but only electric. For remainder of stay wit be on full hookup site 62. Its a narrow site but back of lot is roomy with fire ring. Trees make it hard to fully extend awning and be warned, roads are pretty tight. Had to go wrong way on one way road with our 32" travel trailer because angle going correct direction made it impossible to get into site 43B. Sites are well maintained and staff was seen out all morning cleaning sites for next arrivals. Bathhouse and shower are are clean but VERY dated. When all showers are occupied, water pressure is really slow almost to just a trickle, better to go early morning or late at night when not busy.
Playground is small but nicely maintained and is close to beach/boat ramp area. Views are pretty spectacular despite having the nuclear reactor off in the distance lol.
There is a small cafe in same area serving breakfast/lunch/dinner however prices are quite expensive. They also have golf cart rentals which seem more convenient for campers than having to travel down towards village.
Looking forward to visiting The Keys tomorrow evening for their Full Moon Luau. Monica recommended this as a fun, family experience. Price for adults $10.00 includes lei and rum punch...yummy. Price for kids $5.00 includes lei, glo stick, and mocktail.
Have heard ALOT of mixed reviews before arriving about village being quite the party area, hence the reference of being known as the North's Key West. Hoping all the party crowd left with the Jeeps :) Told we should splurge on golf cart for a day to explore and hoping for nice weather tomorrow for our island adventure.
Enjoying our visit so far but not a place we would most likely would visit again. Prefer Mackinac Island much more over the hustle and bustle here. Only drawback to Mackinac Island is no campground and prices to stay on island aren't exactly family budget friendly!

We only spent a day here, but I intend to go back to spend longer! A lot of the reviews said this place was best for adults because of all the bars, but we went early in the day and stayed until 8 without seeing any drunk people or partying. Fantastic place to take kids.
-Rent a golf cart for the day! Do it! Too far to ride bikes and you'll get much more done than if you walked
-Drive outside of the tourist area and see all of the amazing houses on the island. It's a lot of fun!
-Restaurants are great!
-Kayaking was a ton of fun!
-Park the golf cart at the north tip of the island and walk along the beach, there are some paths you'll find, TAKE THEM! It's quite fun wandering around and we found a really cool place.
Also try...
-Butterfly house
-Perry's cave tour
-Put put golfing
-Heineman's winery and world's largest geode tour
I tell everyone I know to go here at some point. You will have a good time I promise.

Though visiting Put-In-Bay has been on our bucket-list for quite awhile; we were unaware that South Bass Island was so much more.
After the enjoyable Miller Ferry ride over to the Island; we rented a cart and spent about 7 hours exploring the Island.
We did several of the main attractions (the spectacular Peace Memorial, the informative Island Museum, the antique auto display, etc.); but we spent the majority of our visit riding up & down the roads... enjoying the architecture, views and natural beauty.
And, conversing with some of the people....
We had a wonderful talk with a worker repairing a section of coastline, gained some Island insights from the docent at the Museum, gained some perspective from Park rangers at the Memorial, etc.
We learned Put-In-Bay is the attraction; but South Bass Island is the community and history.
We hope to make a return visit to this interesting and engaging area (off-season again, of course, from everything we learned).

Let me just say.. I want to move here.. That should tell you how awesome this place is.. People were super nice, beautiful scenery and overall a fantastic vacation!!

If you are going for the day- I highly recommend that you read the review from Wayfairing-Man on November 3, 2018. We did as he suggested and had a great day.
A couple of notes-
1) Millers Ferry is a great way to go. You can buy tickets on line if you are going during a busy time or save the service fee and buy at the dock if things are quieter.
2) Check prices on the golf carts. Between the coupon on the Miller's Ferry website and by calling around, we saved about $20 on a one day rental.
3) There is quite a bit open and the places that are open are doing a decent job keeping things distanced and clean.

Love every thing about visiting the island! Great food, beautiful scenery and exciting nightlife! Our destination of choice!

There are many reasons why vacationers and island aficionados take the Miller Ferryboat to Put-in-Bay, one of several Lake Erie islands situated off shore in the upper northwest Ohio region. Put-in-Bay (or South Bass Island) is less than 4 miles long and is relatively flat. It’s walkable, driveable, bikeable, and golf-cartable. For the normal traveler arriving without motorcraft or under sail, getting to Put-in-Bay is a simple matter of purchasing a ticket on the Miller Ferry Boat Line which leaves the Catawba Island docking facility at the farthest point of Route 53N.
Once on the island, newcomers have the option of renting one of several thousand golf carts on the island from various agencies at the landing dock and in town or hopping a transport bus ($2.50) for a leisurely 10 minute, 2-1/2 mile ride into town.
On the island, there are numerous attractions for visitors: a narrated island tram tour, a butterfly house, an historic home, miniature golf, gem mining, cave tours, arcades, and an honest-to-goodness colorful carousel. The Commodore Perry Victory and Peace Memorial museum and site is a short walk or ride from the center of town.
For recreational enthusiasts, there is charter boat fishing, kayaking rentals and a nine hole golf course nearby. For the shopper and browser there are various spots to hone this craft, art galleries, and a wide (really wide) selection of restaurants and pubs. Numerous lodging establishments, a couple of wineries and a microbrewery round out the scene for those wondering what to do.
So what if one prefers to hoof it around Put-in-Bay rather zip around in a rented golf carts Very doable. In fact, walking around the greater downtown area provides excellent opportunities for photos with an amazing selection of scenic angles.
The townscape is a bright pastiche of colors, tints and hues. Under the glint of the sun, well-maintained buildings simply gleam. We’re talking color saturation here. It’s that vivid a sight. A tree shaded park at the center of the town provides a nice restive area for tired feet. Marina areas sport an array of sleek recreational and pleasure craft. And doubtless to every visitor’s sense of relief, Put-in-Bay has no shortage of public restrooms. Put-in-Bay is meticulously clean. Everything appears new and in pristine condition. It’s picture postcard perfect. With no disrespect meant, one wonders if the Stepford Wives vacation here.
If one is looking for a serene island outpost far from the madding crowd, Put-in-Bay is not that destination. It’s very definitely a locale that thrives on people. It’s well managed with its island feet solidly planted on the ground and most definitely conscious of its bread and butter – the tourist trade. It should also be mentioned that like many coastal island there is a smaller year-round population as well. The in-season people count swells as one would expect. A varied calendar of events throughout the year with special emphasis in 2013 on commemorating the island’s storied naval history -- the re-enactment of Perry’s 1813 naval victory over the British fleet during the War of 1812.
Come for the day, come for the weekend, come for an extended stay. Enjoy the hustle and bustle and activities on this picture postcard island world only twenty minutes from the mainland.

We’ve come here three times now and it’s always a fun place to be. You can rent golf carts, bicycles and even motorcycles to get around. There are many great places to eat, a huge grassy area with a playground for kids, a carousel, beach sides to get to the water - overall lots to do and see. Easily a full day of fun things to do.
Note - in the summer it gets very, very busy with a diverse crowd of people. I was unfortunate to come across some racist folks during my recent visit - which was a huge downer to my overall visit this time around and possibly a deterrent from future visits. Just know that this is a very tourist driven island. There will be people coming from far and wide to visit. If you go, have fun and let others too :)

If you want to visit a spot where you can take in all of nature and enjoy an island life style but can't afford to go some place exotic then this is the spot for you!! Take in the nature and water in the day time then when it gets dark...talk about an island that knows how to have a good time!! There's good food and drinks to be had all over the island. So many bars to choose from up here. My personal favorite are Joe's, Mr. Ed's, Topsy, and The Brewery to finish the night. The locals are friendly and are ready for you to enjoy what the island has to offer.

This island is amazing! Taking the Millers Ferry or Jet Express is exciting, and once you get to the island, it's like a playground for adults and families. You won't need a car, so rent a golf cart or bikes. We rented mopeds and it's a blast! The small village surrounding the central park is charming and fun, with restaurants, bars, shops, games, even an old-timey carousel. Be sure to have a cold one at the historic Round House Bar - it's exactly what you think it is. Wander the huge marina, and be sure to visit Perry's Monument - the 3rd tallest national monument (behind Washington Monument and Gateway Arch I think). Whatever you do, you'll feel like you're on "Island Time." Enjoy!

My trip trip to South Bass Island,Put in Bay, OH.
I would recommend Put In Bay, Oh to anyone it is a a beautiful area to visit and very clean.
There enough restaurants to satisfy anyone a play area and park for the kids to enjoy. We only spent the day there and when it was time to leave we were sorry we didn't make arrangement's to stay over night.
I would suggest not going on the weekend because it get's very crowded. The next time we go I will make arrangement's to hold a gulf cart as the gas ones were all rented we had to get a electric one. Although they are nice a quiet the electric ones are slow but my grand-sons got a big kick out of it.

We went during the week and it was very peaceful. Although villagers told me to avoid Friday and Saturday. Realizing and the whole family enjoyed the experience. Driving a golf cart instead was a blast. Outdoor chicken patio was the best chicken I ever ate.

Mostly a hang out for the college crowd. Not as family friendly as years ago. Restaurants seem to all serve the same thing and it gets a bit "rough" in the evenings when the party starts.

Do NOT buy from the t-shirt shop between TJ smokehouse and Misty Bay boutique. Place doesn’t have signage (might be the shirt shack). Employee was completely rude and called me a ignorant m** f*** when I tried to verify the price of a flimsy tank top (came up on the register as 30.00 sweatpants). The customer behind me was appalled and put their items back and walked out. The island has many reputable places and bend over backwards for tourists but not his place. Not worth your time or money.

Wonderful place to get away. Daytime golf cart riding around the island with stops at wineries, caves, monuments and shorelines can be relaxing while evenings are off the hook. Also quite a few great pool bars to spend the daytime as well.

South Bass Island in the western basin of Lake Erie is home to the festive, historic village of Put-in-Bay, a name derived from a directive of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry during the War of 1812, when he commanded his men to "Put the ships in the bay". The island is famous for being a refuge for Commodore Perry and his men as they fought one of the most important battles of the War of 1812 just a few miles from South Bass Island and won the decisive battle which took place on September 10th 1813, thus guaranteeing that a large part of the upper USA would remain so and not fall under British rule. A 352 tall monument commemorates the victory, the Perry's Victory Memorial Monument is the 4th tallest memorial structure in America, a viewing platform near the top can be reached by elevator and offers expansive views of Lake Erie and into Canada which is just 5 miles from the coast of South Bass Island.
Over the years Put-in-Bay has developed into quite a tourist attraction, hosting nearly a million tourists each summer season. The resort boasts numerous hotels, bars, restaurants, attractions and shops. There is something for everyone. From famed Great Lakes Troubadour Pat Dailey to kayaking trips around the island. The abundance of bars-restaurants will please even the most discriminating palette. The Jet Express Ferry boats reach downtown PIB from docks in Port Clinton and Sandusky, Ohio. For schedules and island information log on to www.jet-express.com. The Miller Ferry transports tourists, cars and food and beverage trucks to Put-in-Bay from Catawba Island which is at the end of Ohio State route 53 North. www.MillerFerry.com.

What a wonderful week day family visit! The reason I say week day is the island is a party goers dream on the weekend but during the week it is the perfect place for a family to visit! So much to see and do! It will keep everyone happy no matter what their age is. Great shopping (be sure to stop at Compass Pointe - cute shops!), caves that the kids will love and Perry's Monument is something for the whole family. The boat ride over is fun and gives you an insight into what it is like to live on an island. A truly magical day!

The golf cart is a must if you want to see as much as you can while you are there. We hit all of the top highlights of the island and enjoyed hitting the backroads, too. Lovely place to visit - relaxing and beautiful! Shoot you are on a huge body of water, what is not to like!

We had a nice day on South Bass Island, and the golf carts were a fun way to get around.
One issue we found was that much of the waterfront is taken up by private homes. Meaning there are only small sections of the island where you can ride the golf carts along the lake. Most of the time you are riding down your average country road.
So it would have been even more great if there were more public open spaces along the water.
Some of the places like winery with the cave in it need a good renovation and sprucing up. As many of the places give off the vibe of being there just for people to get drunk and not much else.

We went out to Put in Bay on the Ferry on a weekday in off season. We visited the Perry Memorial, the Heineman Winery and Crystal Cave and the Lighthouse. It appeared that most of Put in Bay is bars and restaurants.

Everytime I visit cedar point I always visit Kelly's island & Put-in-Bay. I catch a boat from either Sandusky Jackson st. Pier or Port Clinton. The islands offer great shopping, homemade crafts & great food. Put-in-Bay also is the place to go for the partygoers. There is something for everyone no matter what age. There us even hotels on the islands. The boat ride is great to get there and the fun never stops. The locals that live on the islands are very friendly and laid back. Some things are a little pricey on the islands, but that's what vacations are for. There are secluded beaches around the island that I have found within walking distance. Another option is a golf cart rental. There are plenty of benches by the dock marina to relax & playground/bathhouse after you exit your boat. The live entertainment throughout the main st areas creates a good atmosphere.

This is the place to go for single, adult night life. It's not very kid friendly. Attractions are limited and the bigggest attraction is the bars and social scene. If you're looking for something family friendly try something different. I was suprised that there is only one beach on the island and it doesn't even have sand, but is covered in rocks/pebbles. Not what you expect from an island, even if it is in the middle of lake erie. Fun, but a specific kind of fun..

A few nights on this small island was a highlight of one of our many trips this year. Safe - Clean - Colorful - Good Food - Unique - Good Bars - Friendly - Beautiful Scenic Bay.
We stayed at Bay Lodge & walked two short blocks to town each day.
Most won't even need golf cart to get around. We even rolled our luggage to & from the ferry. The ferry was only a 22 minute ride from Port Clinton. (But first we drove Five minutes up the road & stopped at Fireland's Winery which was very nice.) There is free parking a block from ferry & you can drop luggage off first by ferry. Awesome time & we met other nice couples at the Mohito Bay Bar which is a large tiki hut with swings for seats all around a half-circle bar with sand as floor. And they have lots of other high table seating. We enjoyed each & every place since we were there four nights. The whole town is a two-block square. (2x2). We go to Key West FL each year & heard about Put-in-Bay's Key West Days at end of August, so we tried it. Some of the entertainers from Key West actually came up & performed. However, some had cancelled.

awesome place to take your family, I recommend as soon as you get there make your way up the hill and rent a golf cart, ( get it for all day) that way you can take your time and explore the island, cheap family memories !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The park is pretty, campsites are narrow as are the roads but it is nicely wooded and has beautiful views. We enjoyed our first few nights - then came Friday. Very noisy, loud groups, lots of drinking, the sites on either side of us both had 3-4 camping units per site. Apparently this becomes a party park for the weekend. Ther seems to be no effort to enforce site limits, parking, quiet hours. Really unpleasant - we left Sat am and had trouble getting out of our site as the road was blocked with excess cars and RVs not parked fully on their sites. We are not like Kelly to return.

1. Everything is expensive.
2. Very little to do unless you like to party.
3. No real beach access.
4. It is only worth visiting for a day.

It was a wonderful adventure and I can cross off one more thing from my bucket list, going into Crystal Cave, the largest geode in the world. We explored the island via golf cart but had to cut the visit short due to the rain. I would like to try this trip again, to see the things that we missed.

South Bass Island is a wonderful place. Great for families, friends and couples, there is a lot to do. You can camp or stay in a resort, cottage, cabin, bed & breakfast or hotel/motel.
There are many restaurants with great food and bars with great drinks and live entertainment.
There is great architecture and lots of history. There are shops and boutiques. There are parks and marinas, family fun and party spots.
Give yourself two-three days to really see it all and enjoy.

its a fun place to be , not far off either n convenient and happening . Its has lots of options to do n spend some quality time . Water sports like any shoreline town , kayak, canoe, jet ski, rent a boat , parasail . Go on . Or just lie in the parks n have a beautiful view of the mighty lake . Pool parties, sunday classic car rounds, biplane rides . So much to do . Rent a golf cart for the day n u r set to explore The island . Good variety of pubs n bars to grab a beer .

We tent camped in the state park on South Bass Island. Lots of touristy things to do. The big thing is to rent a golf cart and cruise around the island. Lots of night life - would not recommend children after 8 or so. If you take your car, you must take the Miller Ferry. Was not a good idea on holiday weekend. Waited an hour and a half in line to get on ferry to get to island and and 2 hours on Sunday to get back to mainland.

The island offers plenty for families but adults really love the island with it's bars, wineries and boat docks. I have been enjoying the trip throughout my life. Just sitting in the park enjoying the marina and downtown wild life is great entertainment. I have always thought the tee shirt with the picture of the Round House Bar and the inscription 'Innocent Looking - Isn't It' represents the island flavor well.

My family and I had a great time on South Bass Island. We hopped on the Miller Ferry in Port Clinton and within 15-20 min we had arrived. There are 2 golf cart rental places right by the Miller Ferry dock - E's Island Golf Carts and Island Bike and Cart Rental. I believe a few of the other cart rentals will pick you up or meet you there if you pre-arrange it with them. There's also the taxi option to get into town. The main part of the island is about a 5-10 min ride away. For a small island, it's packed with lots of fun! Lots of restaurants, including restaurants right on the water, and lots of shopping. And a beautiful park right along the water front. There were so many beautiful boats/yachts on the water too! We had tons of fun riding around the island and sightseeing.

South Bass island is quite diverse. One can visit on Sunday and it's a great place. to enjoy the day with the family. Visit at night, and the island turns into a party place. Rent a golf cart, and explore the island.

I usually go here once a year and always have fun. There are a lot of bars here so it earned its reputation as a drinking town. The world's longest bar is here. There is also a variety of restaurants.
To get around you can rent golf carts or bicycles. On Saturdays it gets very busy so you may want to reserve a golf cart ahead of time as they do sell out. There are lots of golf carts but they are set to not go very fast.
Perry' monument is here and when open you can go up to the top for great views of the island and Lake Erie. It is currently closed for renovations but you can see a short film in visitor center about the war and Commodore Perry.
There are a couple of wineries here you can visit, one has a geode you can walk into. They have a cave you can tour, mini golf, butterfly house, maze, mining and small climbing wall.
There is also an airport here and they offer plane rides. A state park is located here and you can rent boats and kayaks.
Very fun island to visit!

Definitely worth a day trip - or two! Lots of good eats and drinks. Plan ahead and leave plenty of time to get around and to get service in restaurants. Be on island time!

We haven't been to Put-inBay in years but had a comprehensive coupon for the ferry, several restaurants plus attractions on this island. What a wonderful day! We had a golf cart, so got up close and personal with the road and attractions. Would definitely do this again.

This island has a lot to offer for families. We took a morning ferry from Kelley's Island to Put in Bay and spent the day until about 4:00. We rented a golf cart to get around which was so fun. Golf cart rentals at the ferry drop off are almost twice as expensive as rentals a block away. Walk around the shops across from the park and you can find daily golf cart rentals for $60 or $12 per hour. We visited Perry's Cave, Butterfly House, Perry's minigolf, Chocolate Museum, park, Perry's monument, and the Boardwalk. This was the funnest day of our trip. Adults and kids both loved it! The Put in Bay central park is beautiful with great playgrounds. Walking around the marina and shops is fun too.

A 20 minute ferry ride, cars and motorcycles are permitted, we went as pedestrians. You then rent a golf cart, bicycle, or take the bus downtown. There is a tour tram available that gives a nice tour of the island with narrated history and stops at a few of the highlights, like Perry's Cave. If you don't take the tram you will need to rent a golf cart. The downtown consists of bars, restaurants, the harbor, bars, a few t-shirt places, and ice cream shops. Definitely the place to go if you want to party otherwise, not much to see or do. Downtown appears to cater to the younger drinking crowd (20-40 something) rather than families. Fee for the ferry to get there, or fee to dock your boat.

Everywhere you go are every kind of bar you've ever seen. This reminded me of Key West. This is a good place for families during the week and during the day. It looks like a big party place at night. ( this is in the eyes of a dad, grandpa). Constantly spending money for every 20 minute attraction. It is a great area to travel around on your golf cart and take in the scenery. Golf cart rental place by Smokehouse grill was only $45 day. During the week, you have to catch bus back to ferry by 7. There is no beach here. Really enjoyed ourselves, but 2 days was enough.

We planned our trip to South Bass Island on a Sunday. It was a beautiful day although the water was a little rough( worse coming back) .We arrived by boat from Port Clinton and docked by the keys( nice people there),I wished we would have found trip advisor earlier and avoided Perry's cave (see my other review). We rented a 6 person golf cart (17.00 dollars an hour )also $46.00 to dock the boat overnight cheaper then $10.00 an hour. It was an expensive day.Food and drinks were expensive(They were tasty). My husdand and older daughter rode a double person Jet ski ($68.00 for 1/2 hour) They enjoyed it very much. The drive around the island was very beautiful, relaxing.Go see the lighthouse, great grounds and view of the lake (free ). Go see the Monument Great view($3.00 to go to top). All in all it was a good of vacation. Other reviews wrote that the butterfly house had a lot of butterflies and was worth it, but we were so dissapointed in the cave we just wanted to leave there.

Great state park to spend an hour or a week. Camping is available with fun activities on both water and land. If you want restaurants, shops, and night life during your stay, downtown Put-in-Bay is just a short bike ride a couple of miles away.

As I wrote in my review of the yellow tree B & B, I was really blindsided by this place. My wife had heard about it so we made arrangements. As I was researching it, especially a couple of the seedier motels on the mainland, I was pretty darn unimpressed. It was hard to find a place to rent and I figured this was just a sleepy island with a couple of fishing shack’s, maybe a couple of mediocre bed and breakfast, and a couple of forgettable restaurants. My first clue that I was wrong was when we got to the ferry which was mobbed. Somebody said that it isn’t a good place for kids, but there were scads of them on the boat including the loads of teenagers and college-age kids. Put in Bay is the town which is actually 2 miles north of the Millers ferry landing on the island. As soon as you get off the ferry you have a variety of options, including renting a golf cart or a bike. I would recommend the golf cart, there were hundreds of them buzzing around. You can also bring your own car over but it’s really unnecessary and kind of overkill as there’s only a couple of roads. Put in Bay is very festive with some really gorgeous restaurants and lighting and Perry‘s victory column, which is worth seeing, is just on the edge of the town. We ate at the local brewery, but there were a lot of very good choices. It looks like it could either be a wild place, there were venues for bands and there was an IV bus to give people saline infusions for their hangovers as well as a warning on the bus that if you do any of the three “P’s” you paid to clean it up. As I saw the number of young adults there that seemed to have a bit of a Mardi Gras mentality I kind a got what they meant. But loads of families and young couples as well as an older crowd. But my wife and I had a very enjoyable romantic walk around, took the cab which is really a small bus three times, and then used bikes the next morning to ride the length of the island. I would definitely go back. In fact I hope we do

Loved South Bass Island and have recommended it to my family and friends. May come back next year for a Girls weekend. Plenty of things to do, but not too much. Love it.

The island is home to Put in Bay, which is the party center of Lake Erie and a fun place to visit with lots of restaurants, shops and bars, and live entertainment during the season. But there is more to the island that the village. A winery, small state park, interesting homes and a nature preserve, as well as the Perry Peace memorial. There are places to stay in town near the action, or places farther out in quieter surroundings. Lake breezes and views make for a nice change of pace.

We enjoyed walking around the town and island and occasionally would bike to the "far" points. Typically would stop in somewhere for a quick bite and a drink.

I just recently went to Put-In-Bay over labor day weekend, when the Tall Ships and the Lake Erie Battle was going on. It was a lot of fun. The Shops were cute and I had a great dinner at the Irish Pub. With all the other people on the island for the Tall Ships, the town center seemed to have a great, care-free atmosphere. Also the boat ride was nice and very enjoyable (I took the Jet Express). Put-In-Bay is definitely a party island but very nice during the day for families. Hope you try it out :)

We had heard that Put-In-Bay was only for adults but I disagree. Our family reunion included 4 children under 3 and they had a great time at the park playing on the playgrounds and the carousel.

We visit South Bass Island every year at least once, usually for a long weekend, and have always had a great time. The fun begins with a pleasant ferry ride on Miller Ferry which departs from the northern tip of Catawba Island (not really an island) near Port Clinton, OH. Note that auto access to South Bass Island is limited for visitors but this is not an issue as the most popular alternative is much more fun, renting a golf cart. The ferry disembarks on the southern end of the island while the center of the island’s activity is Put-In-Bay at the north end, so one will want to rent a golf cart from one of the nearby vendors (reservations recommended; a web search of Put-In-Bay transportation will provide links), or if one does not plan to venture too far from downtown and does not mind walking a bit, simply take one of the shared taxis (usually 15 person vans) to downtown for about $3. Other options include bicycle or moped rentals. Once in downtown Put-In-Bay, one will find many restaurants, bars, night clubs, dance clubs, wineries and more to engage adults as well as more family oriented activities nearby such as arcades, the National Park Service’s Perry’s Victory Memorial, the amusements at Perry’s Cave (the cave itself is not worth the time or money), the Butterfly House and the Aquatic Resource Center to name a few. Other opportunities include kayaking, power boat rentals, parasailing and ferry trips to several of the other nearby Lake Erie Islands. If planning more than a day trip, there are many accommodations to choose from including vacation rentals, bed & breakfasts, several smaller hotels and resorts, and even camping at South Bass Island State Park. The prime season for South Bass Island is from just before Memorial Day to just after Labor Day; outside of this season, many of the facilities on South Bass Island are either closed or have greatly reduced hours. We highly recommend a day trip or more to South Bass Island and if you can’t have fun there, you can’t have fun anywhere.

It was a beautiful day on the island. Loved sipping margaritas atop of the Boardwalk.
Tons of things to do, lots of bars, shops and restaurants

During the week days and during the day on weekends it is family friendly. Evenings on the weekends are like Mardi Gras

Island is small enough to get around by golf cart, so make sure you take advantage! Needs a bigger beach though.

The island is a great spot to reconnect with family scattered around the county. We meet every year at PIB, rent a house and just relax. Highly recommended

Rented a golf cart and drove around. Kids LOVED it. We paid 97.00 for an all day rental of an 8 passenger cart.

No matter when you go, you will have fun. We went to South Bass Island in May, for my birthday. Nice

My husband and I came here for the day for our anniversary. It was a blast! It was very crowded due to Jeep week but still fun. A few hours to visit a few attractions is more than enough unless you visit the beach or wineries. I am 5 mths pregnant so wineries were out for us. The weather was beautiful. It was sunny and warm but the breeze cools everything down tremendously. We will be returning when we can visit wineries and a prego body doesn't keep me from walking and exploring. I definitely recommend!

I've go up there ever week I have a house up there is amazing the ice in the winter gets so thick u can have fires in it and car races

South Bass Island is a fun place and the fun starts with the beautiful views from the fast ferry you take to the island. If you don't take your car across the ferry you can rent golf carts to drive around the island. Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial and the nature center are seasonal only. Be sure to go inside the giant geode at Heineman Winery. Beautiful beaches all around. Sadly, the chocolate museum is no more. Lots and lots of bars on the island.

We very much enjoyed our visit to South Bass Island and Put in Bay the last week of Sept. It was the end of the season so very few people were there. Enjoyed riding around in the golf cart and just touring the island.

Hubby and I took the ferry over to Put In Bay from Kelley's Island (where we were staying) on a Saturday. It was crowded but not too horrible. We didn't rent a golfcart and just decided to walk around town, and I'm so glad we did because otherwise we would have been sitting in golfcart traffic. The amount of golfcarts on the roads was incredible. We enjoyed visiting the shops and listening to the bands at various restaurants. All the bands we heard were very good. We had lunch at The Keys which was decent and the music there was Tobi Lee from Nashville and she was very good. Put In BAy is THE place for the younger (20 & 30s) crowd for sure. Hubby and I are in our early 60s but we still enjoyed it. After several hours at downtown Put In Bay, we were ready to go back to the quiet relaxed atmosphere of Kelley's Island!

Spent the day there. It's a nice place to just walk and take in the lake. So much to do from shops to bars . Would recommend renting a golf cart. Got a little bit of everything. Hotel are rather expensive on the island. I would recommend saying at port Clinton and taking the jet express to the island

We just took a little 2 day trip to PIB & stayed at the State Park in a tent. Our campsite was beautiful but packed in tight next to our neighbors. Some of the sites actually look out over the water which would be awesome. Firewood & ice were very reasonable! Our only complaint about the State Park was how loud it was Saturday night. We didn't realize what a party atmosphere it would be before going. Both couples on either side of us were there to party so we had the 'pleasure' of listening to them get tanked beforehand as well as listen to them come back at 3am. It was the loudest campground we have ever stayed at. Between the parties and the golf cart races, it was beyond loud. Thank goodness our little ones are hard sleepers. Sunday was so nice once they all left!
We ate dinner the first night at the Bayshore Inn because we got on the island so late. Great restaurant! Very affordable & the food was tasty! Most important, it was so quiet which was nice after the campground.
We had a great time just putzing around the island, renting a golf cart for the kids to have a little fun, went swimming & spent time poking around the marina. All in all, we had a great time! We will be back for sure....just not on a Friday or Saturday.

Th is was the perfect weekend get-away for the two of us. It was just a 3 hour drive from western Pennsylvania. The island is very quaint, with a a good bit of restaurants and attractions to spend a long weekend. Golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation. We stayed for 3 nights the first weekend in October (Thursday thru Sunday). There was lots to see and do and lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. But we noticed that there were not a lot of beaches, so I don't know if I would enjoy the island as much in the middle of the summer.
Favorite things to do: bike all around the island and explore a few short hiking trails on the far east side of the island, visit Perry's Victory monument, tour Heineman's Crystal Cave and Winery, catch the sunset at Stone Cove, sample wine at the Put-in-Bay Winery, and enjoy a beverage at Mojito Bay's Tiki bar with swing seats and toes in the sand. Favorite restaurants: Reel Bar, the Old Forge (the truffle fries are amazing) and Mossbacks (try the Lake Erie Perch and Walleye). We had a fantastic romantic weekend!

It always feels as if we are 'far, far away' when we visit South Bass Island (rather than just a couple hours from our house). We like exploring with a golf-cart. Sometimes there are gorgeous sunsets, too.

First of all I live on the island. It is a great place to visit. The monument is the third highest in the US. The caves are interesting and the winery is a good time especially the grape juice. Plenty of night life too.j

Whether you are there to party, enjoy a couples time away or a family trip, camping with your buddies, there is something to do for everyone. The island has a lot to offer.

Although this was our first visit to Put-in-Bay, we did our due diligence and had a good idea of what to expect ("Key West of the North"). Also, we visited during the week, not on a weekend, to avoid the extreme rowdiness. With those qualifiers, we had a great visit. Stayed in a very nice B&B just outside the village, toured the island in a golf cart, did a little bar hopping (during the afternoons, we're not night owls), and generally had a relaxing visit. A good percentage of the other vacationers were about our age (50-60ish) and well behaved, though we were back sitting on our front porch after dinner each night so not sure what happens when the sun goes down.
It's a nice relaxing island getaway if you avoid the weekends and know what to expect!

Wonderful little island. I rented a Bicycle as soon as I got off the ferry. I spent most of the day riding around the island, looking at little shops and doing a wine tour. I wish I had planned more time to spend here.

When you get off the Ferry, leave the fam at the ice cream shop & get a $3 cab to the Put in Bay airport to get the island's best rate on golf carts. This is the only Co. who rents overnight if you're staying. Book online, especially for busy busy weekends. Friendly & helpful, they have all the tourist info w/out the crowds. Biplane rides from there, too!

Visiting South Bass Island on a weekend in the summer is a great get away choice! So much to see and try!!! Using a golf cart to get around, or ride a bike!

This is the best place to watch the sunsets!!🌄 Great way to get away from the crowds!! Go in the Fall or during the week in summer. Less people!

We go there quite a few times in the summer - great music when Wally and the Beavs or the Menu's play - always a nice time - they have that new Speakeasy which is fun, nice shops - good restaurants - makes you feel like you are so far from home.

My husband and I thought this was one of the most beautiful places either one of us had ever been to! We drove all around the island and found different places where we could just stop and look at gorgeous views! We can't wait to come back and stay longer! The evening sunsets are unbelievable!!!

My husband and I went to Put-In-Bay just after we dropped our boys off at college! I think our timing was perfect! The crazy days of summer were over though the place was still brimming with activity! Everyone we met, staff and guests alike, were super friendly! The entertainment at the bars and restaurants was awesome! Great food and drink and TONS OF FUN!

We had a nice time, but found that most of the island was very expensive. After being there for two day, everything that we wanted to do was covered. If your into heavy drinking, it's definitely the place to go. The bands at the bars were top notch. Plenty of bars to hit. The local attractions are nice. Hit the Put in Bay Winery and the Perry Memorial.

The wife and I went there for our 5th anniversary it was nice scenary, good atmosphere, the food was great and prices were reasonable. We enjoy the day riding around in a golf cart site seeing. would definitely go back. Kim and the staff at the Holiday Inn were fantastic, the room & decor was above average. Keep up the good work.

Came to south bass island to celebrate the CAVS victory. Had a great time on the town and camped at the state park, which was wonderful. The I'm

Took the kids (11 and 13 years old) and pretty much did everything there was to see and do in one day with the exception of parasailing/jetskiing. They really like the Butterfly House, the rock wall, Perry's monument and riding around the island in a golf cart.

Just spent twelve days based on a boat moored at the Village's Docks. The dockmasters were very professional, friendly, and knowledgable. There is a wide selection of food, drink, and entertainment. Make no mistake - the weekends are focused on the young adults who are there to party hardy. During the week, the pace is less frenetic and better for families with youngsters and those who like a slower pace.

We spent a great day with two 12 year olds, an 11 year old and an 8 year old grandchildren at Put in Bay on South Bass Island. We weren't 100% sure that the kids would enjoy it there but we gave it a shot. First of all, they loved the Jet Express, such fun. We had a good lunch at Mr. Ed's Bar and Grill, the perch baskets were great and the kids loved their wings and the entertainment. Riding all over the island in a 6 seat golf cart was fun and breezy on a hot day. The kids, in spite of their "advanced ages" loved the playground in the park by the bay, so much that we had to stop 3 times for them to do so. They had a great time at Perry's Cave running through the maze and we really enjoyed watching them from up above the action. They also played miniature golf there. We were having so much fun that we missed the 7:00 express and had to wait till 9:15, so we had dinner at Mossback's, another great meal. All in all, a perfect day.

Everyone hears about the PIB party scene but if you're looking for a quiet relaxing few days where you can enjoy the water, sun, and scenery, you've found the right place. We came here for a no frills, low cost getaway and we find it by renting a cabin, bringing our bikes, and packing our own food.
I think Put In Bay needs to update and enhance their marketing and promoting to offer more than just bars and shopping. They could also give more information and invest more money into those geared toward a more organic experience.

If you like setting up your tent on a hillside to let the blood rush to your feet whilst you wiggle back up your bed all night than this is the place for you...

I love South Bass Island...even the parts outside of downtown. We go there at least once a year and have been there at different times of the year and there is something for everyone. The parks are nice (except the restrooms are not); there are several places to swim in pools; jetskis to rent; bars to listen to music or just hang out; tons of entertainers; a winery, several marinas and some great restaurants!

If you're lucky (or book early enough) to get a camping spot in the state park along the water, you will have zero regrets! We camped at the South Bass State Park last year and it was an unbelievable experience. Very low key, and families were surrounding us. The views were breathtaking from our campsite. The campground is on the other side of the island, so you are far away from any partying that may be happening downtown PIB. There are showers and bathrooms for anyone to use in the campground. There is a small beach closeby, along with a little trailer where you can grab coffee or breakfast if you don't feel like cooking over the fire. :) Can't wait to return this summer.

We enjoyed our visit here, did a fun package with Miller's ferry, which included Perry's Cave, Butterfly House, Heinemein's Winery Tour & Cave, the Tram Train History Tour etc.. Everything we did was so fun & the island is really relaxing & so pretty. I can't wait to come back. It was very hot though, & a bit touristy, everything was very pricey in the gift shops. We r very frugal & on a budget so we will have to save up some more for when we come back. It does feel like you are visiting a tropical place instead of still in Ohio, or the midwest. It has that island vibe going on. Wish more had been open as the day wound down as we decided to stay to see the sunset over Lake Erie on the ferry ride back & most things closed at 5ish so we sat in Derivera Park & perused a few shops but overall its so pretty just enjoying the ambiance was nice too.

We arrived Sunday on labor day weekend, rented a golf cart and headed for our bed and breakfast hotel. The wife wasn't too thrilled on renting a cart when we got there, but she was so happy we had it for the three days two nights we were there. This place is really set up for a party place...I was here 40 years ago and remember that part of South Bass...but now i was more about learning about history, eating in the different restaurants and just traveling around the island. The place is a whole lot bigger now, and more commercial. There is plenty to do, for young kids too.... . it is really fun to travel by golf cart, driving through the town...visiting the Perry Memorial, and traveling the country roads looking at the beautiful homes....On Sundays they have the Antique car parade....and there are a ton of cars here...it's amazing to see so many. this is a very wonderful and relaxing place...i hope you get a chance to visit.

This is very charming. Another thing it’s a long walk up to top . Also the view is great. Lastly, I would go back in a hart beat .

This is usually a day trip for us. It is a beautiful boat ride over from Port Clinton. We rented a golf cart to drive around, stop for shopping, sightseeing and food. This little gem of an island has a lot to offer and it's just a nice getaway, even for a day, although there are plenty of places to spend the night if you choose. Lots of shopping and dining options available. Love it here.

Good place to handout in the weekend. I'm lucky to bump into the Octoberfest event to enjoy good beer n German food in the special event.
Entrance fee is $4 per pax but beer n food are sale separately. There is live german music band while u enjoying good n drink with many people around. A lot of beer, food n people around 🍻

Fun driving around in a golf cart.Careful renting,
many are missing windshields and are out of alignment. Lots of great restaurants. Beaches are all rocky. Glacial grooves can be seen in the state park camp grounds. World’s largest geode is at Crystal Cave. International Peace Memorial is beautiful.

A short drive away and easily accessible by two different ferry lines, South Bass Island offers the perfect locale for a fun-in-the-sun day trip or overnight getaway. The downtown commercial district's many restaurants and bars are fun and are a short walk or golf cart ride from the nation's smallest National Park which boasts the only peace memorial honoring the ongoing peace among the US, Canada and Britain. Local wineries can be found in a couple of different locations. Watch the sunset from South Bass Island State Park. Accommodations range from hotels to campgrounds to B&Bs.

If you are anywhere around Cleveland, take the hour or so drive to Port Clinton and take the Jet Express over to South Bass Island. Whether you want the beach, a visit to on of the tallest monuments in the country or one of the many great eateries, this Island is for you. There is a winery as well! Rent a golf cart and tool around the streets or head off on one of the winding roads and check out the Islands old homes and Bed and Breakfasts. Several small motels and house rentals for weekend stays. The views on the ferry over are fantastic and the Island is extremely picturesque.

The 200th year re-enactment of Perry's Victory at Sea was made great with the appearance of the "Best Damn band in the Land"--OSU's marching band, and the assistance of Miller's ferry, Harriet's House, and PIB Car Depot staffs, we had a memorable time again on the island.
Despite their best efforts of deceit, despicable business tactics, and bait and switch tactics, the Edgewater Suites and Carts did NOT ruin our day visit.

The Ferry ride to the island, renting golf carts exploring the island and the shops are all alot of fun. It is a summer tradition in our family.

We try to visit here once a year. Rent a gulf cart and take drive. Best way to get around. Lots to see and do.

It wouldn't be summer without our annual trip to South Bass Island and the village of Put-in-Bay. The village is lively and colorful and the later in the day, fills with a younger (and livelier) crowd. The middle and other end of the island are more low-key and relaxing...see the lighthouse, visit Goat soup and whiskey. A nice escape and island fun without leaving Ohio.

South Bass Island, (Put in Bay), has something to offer for everyone. Many fine places to eat, or indulge in your favorite cocktail. Whether it be The Keys and their delicious menu, the Boardwalk, with several eating venues in one building, the Reel Bar with its delicious menu, or any of the fine restaurants in between and too numerous to mention, you'll find something to satisfy your appetite. For music buffs, Put in Bay has a huge variety of live music day and night! You can take the Miller Ferry or the Jet Express to and from the mainland! Activities begin in early Spring and continue through Halloween. So pick your event, and be ready for a really good time on South Bass Island, Put in Bay, Lake Erie, Ohio!

I have stayed a handful on times on the island, and very much enjoy the campground. It is clean, friendly staffed, and pretty as a picture. If your staying in a tent, try to get close to the cliff, for the best scenery!

I have been to South Bass Island many times over the years for vacation or a long weekend, and have always enjoyed myself. My most recent visit was a photography workshop on Gibraltar Island, sponsored by Ohio State University, my first visit to Gibraltar, and my first visit to South Bass as a "real photographer". The island is packed full of unique and beautiful subjects to photograph, and I really enjoyed viewing the island from this new perspective. You can find a wide range of architecture, wildflowers, boats, bald eagles and tons of water fowl, the party crowd at Put-In-Bay, and of course the lake. There are landscape opportunities everywhere, with gorgeous sunrise and sunset locations. Macro subjects are equally numerous, and abstracts too. I could easily spend a week there and not run out of things to shoot. The light has a wonderful quality and the island is still very "green" and park-like in many places. The ferry ride over on the Miller Line from Catawba Island is a joy in itself, and really sets the mood for your time on South Bass. It takes about 20 minutes to cross the channel and the ferrys are well-attended by gulls during the trip. I will be back as often as possible to this gem!

We have visited a number of times. The energy is so much fun. While it is not in the Caribbean, it feels like a little bit of the tropics. This is for families during the day, but the definitely for adults at night. Be prepared for higher prices for food. We stayed at the state park and loved it.

A quaint, victorian-era community with many things for a family to do. There is a state park, lots of water sports, shopping, fishing, tours, restaurants and plenty of attractions. We will always travel to South bass island.

Beautiful Island with very friendly residents. Great to visit with family during the day, and adults only in the evenings.

We had an enjoyable time here. We took a little ferry from the mainland which was fun but a little too expensive. We rented gold carts but I think they had bike rentals available as well. No cars allowed. The gold carts were the best part of this trip. It was like driving miss daisy. Cool! They also had a couple restaurants, shops, golf, mini-golf and caves. Actually visited in May 2013.

I enjoyed a dy of exploring the island by golf cart, shopping, brunch and playing in the park with my dog. Alot of places are pet friendly. We came to the Island on Miller's Ferry. It was only $13 with online coupon. I had my dog in his carrier backpack/car seat. His carrier was easy to seat belt into an E's gas powered golf cart. Picking up my reserved golf cart was easy and quick. It was a gret way to get around. We were all over the Island. He ran around the pack on his leash and had lunch at the Boardwalk. I put him back in his carrier for shopping. No one seemed to mind him shopping with me and several people complimented his behavior. He is quiet and loves being carried around. Del Sol with color changing gifts was my favorite store. Although the rain cut our day short we still had a wonderful time.

Put-in-Bay is a typical touristy place. Tourism and wineries are pretty much their entire economy. There are very cute shops, lots of local watering holes and food joints--you won't find a lick of fast food on the entire island! You can rent cabins, homes, hotel rooms or even camp at South Bass Island State Park (I give the bath houses there a B+) like we did.
One thing I will caution, even though they have some fun things to do for kids, it's really not kid-oriented. Way too many drunks (even in the middle of the day) to really let you feel at ease about letting your child have too much freedom, and come on, it's their vacation too.

This is a fun and interesting place to visit. It is just a short ferry ride to the island from Port Clinton area. There are many things to do there. They have plenty stores for shopping along with restaurants and bars to cater to all visitors. The state park is nice for relaxing and they have restrooms easily available. You can rent a golf cart or bike for getting around. They also have a trolley for getting around. Perry's Monument is there and you can go to the top of it. It is over 300 feet high so you can see the island and the area. Crystal Cave is a good place to check out. It is the largest geode in the world and you get to go into it. There is a butterfly house on the island. There are hotels there so you can stay rather than just visit for a day.

Taking the Miller Ferry from Catawba to Put-In-Bay put us on South Bass Island. We drove over and was able to visit most of the island during the day. If you cross as a passenger you can rent golf carts which seemed to be the preferred transportation. It makes it a lot easy to get around and park with a golf cart but we made do when we found a good spot to park. If you get to downtown - a lot of things can be easily walked to in that area. Very nice clean island

We enjoyed a couple days here. It was Sunday through Tuesday. If you don't like a lot of people, don't go over the weekend. Take bikes or rent a golf cart. (which is expensive) The Beer Barrel has good entertainment most of the day.

South Bass Island Well where do i start LOL well for kids & older people there is camping, fishing, swimming, putt putt, butterfly house, air port, golf carts to take your kids on and all ages and tour trains to enjoy the sounds & sites of South Bass Island.Alot great places to eat mm candy ! ice cream & many good places to eat too many to name .You do have handy cap parking and we found a handy cap restroom by the Jet Express area in there park area. They have swings there and picnic tables & you can watch the boats & Jet Express come in and out.On the other side of the Island you can take the ferry to south Bass also and its abit slower one but so what relax & enjoy the veiw ! and theres golf carts at each area to rent. You can take a taxie around also it sure helps if on one side the island or the other! you can bike also and walk of course.dogs are welcome just so under control & on a leash & clean up your mess of course. We love Lake Erie Always have! to us its Beautiful & always will be to us!!! alot nature to see just at the right moment. To se the glistening crystal waters glow in the sun ! wow what a wonderful feeling of warm sun on your face & the waves gently or slaping the shores what a wonderful relaxing feeling. We like to go on sunny days who would not ! The island has everything to fill up a day trip or a week. Live music, water recreation, entertainment, food, drinks, events, relaxing. Get to it. Or don't, that's more room for me on the island.

this small island has loads of history. It is easily reached on the Miller Ferries from Catawba and you can walk or push bike or catch a bus, or hire a golf cart to get to the village centre of Put-in Bay. There is an awesome playground for children, a lot of variety for food and just fun strolling around

South Bass Island Put-in-bay is incredibly nice place which we visited during our stay in Ohio. All of Iceland is overcrowded by visitors because it was weekend. Everyone was enjoying on roads by traveling through Golf cars which are easily available on rent. So much restaurants and bars are there full of people.

We stayed 2 nights, did the touristy things, Perry Monument (great), rented a golf cart for a day ( $60), ate out twice ( Hooligans and The Goat - both great ), Nature hike (good but really buggy), walked the downtown several times, Heineman's Winery & Cave ( great ), .. I had always wanted to go there but I came home disappointed. There seemed to be alot of smokers so to sit anywhere ( bars or a park ) the fresh air was not always there. People watching was fun and it is nice to have live music at 3pm and then again at 9:30pm. I know I won't go back - we were there during the week and were told the weekends get mighty crazy. The longest bar was interesting to see and most of the hotels pools were closed because it wasn't warm enough ? I think it was high 70's when we were there. We took Miller Ferry from Catawba ( $ 15 RT pp - 20 mins ).

This is a hidden gem that we discovered several years ago and just got back to after 15 years and it still does not disappoint! Such a cool place to take the kids or just as a couple. You can rent a golf cart or bikes and go all over the island. There are numerous small gift shops and a huge marina. Many restaurants, a winery, caves, a state park!

Rent a golf cart and enjoy the island. The weather was perfect and the business employees/owners were friendly and helpful. We rode all over the island and had a wonderful time. The ferry ride over is very pleasant and offers amazing views.

South bass island is better than ever. Took in some nature trails. Road a golf cart all day. Went to the top of the monument. Went kayaking around Gibraltar island. Toured the island. Saw outstanding scenery. This was an above average day. Thanks for sharing the island!!!

My credit cards that had 0 balance on them before I went was compromised, I had 3 credit cards I had to destroy, bring cash folks! I had a great time but beware of 2 sour pusses. Perry cove and front desk off bay lodging. Both to young to have such an attitude.

We went over to the island in July it is open a couple of months in the summer and was really nice. everyone was friendly. We did the island tour and found it very enjoyable and relaxing. The only negative that i can say is as this is a tourist attraction so everything is expensive but hey life is about having a good time and this island provides something for everyone very nice place

When you talk about visiting an island for vacation, most people tend to think of something tropical or exotic, but South Bass Island is a fun getaway and a great place to spend a day or so on Lake Erie, just a jump and a skip from Canada.
With this visit, I’ve spent a total of five days of my life here. This island is a relaxing and pretty place and I’ve really enjoyed my time here.
This particular visit, which took place on a Sunday, coincided with the last day of daily ferry service to the island for the 2013 season, so most of the businesses were closing up, and there was an end of season car parade that we enjoyed seeing while eating lunch. Within two months of this visit, the island’s Facebook page showed photos of the island as a winter wonderland.
It’s fun to ride the Miller Boat Line ferry over. You can take your car if you’d like, but it costs a lot more and I prefer to rent a bike just up the hill from the ferry dock (they also have golf carts) and explore the island that way.
There’s actually quite a bit to do on the island. I never miss visiting Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, which commemorates the Battle of Lake Erie that was part of the War of 1812. There was a nice visitor’s center, which has been redone since I last visited, and you have to go up the 352-foot tower (the world’s most massive Doric column) for the great views of the island and a few surrounding islands. There’s also the Heineman Winery (try their ice wine - it’s kinda expensive but very good); two caves you can tour - Perry’s cave and Crystal Cave, which are nearly across the street from each other; the 1.5 acre Oak Point State Park; browse the touristy shops and restaurants in the small downtown strip; or you can just pedal around and enjoy the scenery.
I’ve wondered about staying overnight at one of the island’s hotels someday, but have never done that. I highly recommend visiting South Bass Island and hope I can get back here again sometime!

About 65 miles from Cleveland, South Bass is the most developed of all the Lake Erie islands. Take the short ferry ride and then rent one of the many golf carts to explore this small island. There is a nice commercial area with shops and eating places, as well as rural areas. Do not miss the Perry Memorial Tower with the National Park Service center. It is worth the trip by itself.

South Bass is one of my favorite places to hang out. Driving around on a golf cart all day, meeting new people, do a little shopping, lots of places to eat, and many things to see and do. There is much history there, and it is a fun place to hang out!

You make it the day you want it to be. You can rent an expensive golf cart after you get off the ferry (80-100 a day). You can rent bikes or bring your own. It is not bad biking all over the island. We discovered you could rent a golf cart in town for $12 an hour. That was all we needed just to try it out. Otherwise we rode our bikes. Eating will cost a lot. Hot dogs start at $5. There is a nature center that charges $3. We didn’t think that would be worth it. The tower is $10. I believe most attractions are around $15. So you can spend a lot of money or take a good ride around with out paying too much.

Went here for the first time in a long time and it was a blast! Went with some friends and had so much fun that we ALMOST missed the Jet Express back. I recommend not taking small children, especially after dark because it gets crazy. It is a very relaxing day riding around in golf carts, and a wild night at the bars!

This place reminded us of Newport, RI, but much smaller. It is truly a beautiful place to visit. Most everything to see can be done so in a couple of days, making it a nice short get away. We will be returning next year.

Fun for all people , fisherman, fun seeking Adventures, Beer Drinkers and Hellraisers, history Buffs, and people who just want to shop. Beautiful picture of homes and wonderful Lake scenes.

We went to Heineman's winery and went into the world's largest geode! Then we went to the mini golf/maze/caving place across the street - fun!
Recommendation to rent mopeds ahead of time for when you get off the ferry; otherwise you can rent bikes there or take a bus for $2.50.

What a place - only way to get here is by boat (as a passenger) or with your car (Miller Ferry) but is it worth it - HELL YES......romantic, fun - way more than most places - get a golf cart or bike and tour the island - but downtown is the happening place - with WORLDS LONGEST BAR - BEER BARREL (Guiness Book of World Records) to the Roundhouse and Mad Dog Adams - entertainment is everywhere in every pub/bar and you cannot go wrong anywhere - many folks do get to "tie one on" here and the later it gets - well - you get the picture......BATTLE OF LAKE ERIE Momument is here - Museum is awesome (watch the movie - REAL AMERICAN HISTORY here) - all kinds of places to stay all over the island (hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts) and there is an airport in case you have a plane.....SPECIAL PLACES (REEL BAR, JOE's BAR and many more) - this is an adult playground to be sure.....

Quaint little island that is mostly walkable but a golf cart is all you need to see everything. Cars are discouraged but doable on the ferry. Interesting military history, lots of great bars, and this time of year still great weather without the college kids!

We've been going every year! Read the reviews and watch the weather. A very nice casual island with much happening. Take the Miller Ferry and research all there is to do. The Jet Express offers more time on the island, but is more expensive. There's something for everyone! Lodging is high for the season and many people come for the summer. There is a minimum two night stay on weekends. Lodging is cheaper Sunday through Thursday. The food is great and restaurants have great reviews. A golf cart makes the trip pleasurable. The main park in the downtown area is well maintained. We can't wait to go back and visit the Lonz Winery again and Kelley's Island! Would love to check out St. Hazard's Resort, too!

There is very little reason to go here unless you own a boat and/or if you want to party. The lake and "beaches" are not good for swimming. The rest of the island is a tourist trap. It's not all bad, just not worth spending any money on, unless you want to party. If the weather is perfect, then spending a day sight seeing is worth the charge for the ferry. Renting a golf cart will cost you $50-100, so you might want to bring a bicycle. Unfortunately, the lake is still not clean, and the blue-green algae is downright disgusting.

This was a late summer, last minute trip. We took Millers Ferry to and from the Island. We really enjoyed the ferry ride and Millers Ferry does a great job taking folks to and from the Island. We had planned to visit on a week day, but the weather didn't cooperate, so we went on a Saturday. BIG MISTAKE! If you want a golf cart on a weekend, you really need to reserve it ahead of time, otherwise the chances are great you won't get one. We took a taxi into town, and took the trolley tour, which was a good way to see and learn about the island. We came to the realization that golf carts are mostly PARKED, as the majority are there to drink and party. The main attraction appears to be hanging out at the bars. We didn't find much in the way of kid friendly activities, or points of interest other than bar hopping. Perry's monument was closed, but we did enjoy the museum and the grounds. There is a Central Park with beautiful playground equipment and restroom facilities and picnic tables and this is where our grandson spent several hours playing and where famililies appeared to be spending the majority of their day. We found a little bakery just past the carousel and near the trolley depot for our lunch. The workers were friendly and food decent. If you have a sweet tooth, the pastries looked delicious! They had a few tables to sit outside. Of course there are many BIG restaurants along the main drag, we chose to skip the crowds. The carousel is worth a stop and a ride. For about 5.00 you can ride more than once...hope I saw that correctly...so I would recommend stopping early so the kids can ride several times during the day. It is the oldest wooden carousel in the world, and lovingly taken care of! The shops are mostly t shirts and beachy trinkets...not much of interest. On a beautiful day I imagine riding around the island on the golf cart could be fun...the weekends I think there's just too many people zipping around on them and we witnessed the police on five different occasions pulling a cart over. We ended up leaving the island by 6 as it just wasn't a good environment for the evening. We were disappointed, as we had been to the island many, many years ago and didn't remember the excessive bar scene. This is definitely an adult destination. All in all a pretty place, but not the best family destination.

My husband and I took our 3 year old son to Put-in-Bay for the 4th of July. It was our first time and we had a great time! We took the Miller's Ferry(military discount!) over to South Bass Island. Kids 5 and under are free. Ferry has a top deck and our son LOVED it. Ride was about 20-25 min. We had reserved a 4 passenger golf cart from E's Cart Rental a couple nights ahead, but they said they keep plenty on hand for "walk-ups". They were the closest to the dock which helped, $70 for the day(had a $5 coupon which they gave us or if you're military). They also provide car seats for kids 4yrs/40lbs and under so that was awesome. BEST way to get around the island, golf cart parking EVERYWHERE so super convenient. We visited Perry's Family Fun Center and went to the Butterfly House(SO neat!). We also toured Perry's Cave which was ok, I've been on better, but it was neat. Stairs down to the cave are narrow and get really steep, and it's about 50 degrees. We ate lunch at the Upper Deck off Bayview. It was right in the middle of everything and got to eat lakeside. Food and service was good. Spinach dip is AWESOME!! Kids can watch the boats/helicopters/birds so there's plenty to keep them occupied :) Kids menu is pretty varied which was nice. We got dessert at the Dairy Isle which has burgers, shakes, malts, etc. There's a couple playgrounds and a carousel($2 per rider). The lighthouse, beaches, restaurants, picnic areas, and shopping are all right there so you can park and walk easily. They also had an antique car parade which our son loved. After walking around for a bit we headed back and turned our golf cart in and took the ferry back across to Catawba Island where we parked our car for $5. There's 5 lots you can park in for Miller's Ferry passengers. Tip: DO NOT LOOSE your ferry tickets. They don't issue receipts for cash payments and you'll just have to buy another ticket. Hope this was helpful!

Great place to visit for long weekend vacation. Rent a golf cart for Island transportation or relax by the pool.

A great get away weekend, renting a golf cart a must. So much to see, explore, shop, winery, eat, fish, scenic boat tours, helicopter rides, it's impossible to do everything the island offers in a weekend.

Great little island vacation weekend after the rush of the youngins summer infestation. Enjoyed renting a golf cart and enjoying the laid back atmosphere.

My 2 boys (9 and 11) loved our day on the island. The best part was renting a golf cart and simply driving all over the island. The parks are beautiful and the marina is fun to watch. We probably wouldn't have been able to stay for several days because the town is mostly restaurants, shops, and bars. However, this was an awesome day trip!

This is a great place to spend an day or overnight. You can totally relax, driving your golf cart around all day, soaking up sun and breathing fresh air. You can also party like a nut. Or make it a family thing. For such a small island, you can accomplish a lot. Save money by taking Miller Ferry.

I go on trips with the kids and trips with the girls. they are different. When you go with the kids go on a weekday or early on a week-end. See the butterfly house, the park, ride around on a golf cart, parasailing or whatever. If we go with the girls it is a little more adventuresome. We go in the afternoon on a week-end and stay until night time. We are in our 50's and love the party atmosphere. We like to go to Heinemans winery and sit in the garden and people watch. You can see and meet some really interesting people. People come over to your table and just start talking. We take a deck of cards and play cards with people. Go to cheese haven the day before and get some food for a picnic. Then, we go to the bars at night and some nice restaurants. Get some chocolate at the chocolate factory. See the museum. Yes, people like to party there and you will see a lot of tipsy people but they are not hurting anyone. I go there to have "no worries" for the day. I would not suggest taking kids on a late week-end night. There are too many partiers doing too many crazy things. Some of them wear hats made out of balloons that look like body parts, others may be flashing at people. I saw someone relieving themselves at the side of the road......you get the picture. But be warned: you sign your life away to get a golf cart and the police are vigilant about people driving golf cars while drunk. You get the same consequence as an OMVI!!

so much war history I had no idea happened. Fun historical museum. The majority of tourists go there for the nightlife and drinking. it was modeled after Key West, and gets pretty crazy during the high season.

Great place to go for a day trip or for the night life. The people on the island are so friendly. Plenty of place to let your hair down, anything from dancing the night away to relaxing under a shade tree. Seems to be something on the island for all ages, great for a family trip!

a few friends and I visited here when it was cold and windy in April and rented a gold cart and it was absolutely beautiful!!! A place I would love to visit every day!!! I wouldn't recommend going in April because everything is closed but you basically get the Island to yourself!! lol

Our recent trip (my first) to Small Bass Island, home of Put-In-Bay exceeded my expectations for enjoyment! There were plenty of golf carts and bicycles to rent (we elected to leave our car on the mainland of Ohio), restaurants and pubs in which to eat and drink, shops to look for unique gifts and mementos and places of interest encouraging activities and exploring . It really seemed like the "Key West" of Ohio! It was clean, well designed and welcoming. The individuals in the various service positions (wait staff, hosts, bartenders and cashiers) were all friendly, professional and well-trained. I was also happy to see many families participating in the various attractions there as well.

Expect to spend $80 per couple to get onto, and travel the island. $32 round trip on the Millers Ferry for 2 ppl, and $50-60 for a golf cart. AAA Members get $5 off at the rental on top the hill.
Decide on your budget and then have fun. On Sat 9/29 the last ride back to mainland was at 6:30pm. Golfcart had to be back by 6:30pm, too. Enjoy the gift shop atop the hill from Miller's Ferry. The Upper Deck restaurant has a great view of the lake, while the monument is worth visiting once. $7/person to get to the top.
Heineman's Winery has the only crystal cave and it's worth their $8 tour, which includes the cave, winery tour and a free sample. Their outside patio is very nice!

Really pretty place. State Park campground is nice right on the lake. Overall place is picturesque.
Being said they call it "key west of the north" I felt the night life shut down Early every night I was there. (July 2021) if your going a weekend I totally recommend. But any longer than that. There just isn't enough to do. Especially for families.
The problem is the ferry that takes you on and off to other islands. Are very EXPENSIVE!
And long waits. So be aware. Our family had 6 nights on the island. And we left early tbh. All because getting anywhere else is a pain. -make sure you have all camping gear. Diapers anything you'd need before getting on island. Very few stores and they have nothing in them. I'd love the place if ferrys were free.

We have been visiting The Bay for over 20 years, up until a few years ago, always by boat. We've learned to arrive on a Monday or Tuesday and definitely be off the island by Friday morning. Weekends are an unending spring break party, not good for families with young children or people who just don't appreciate that atmosphere. We love the island and enjoy shopping and dining there every year.

We try to make it to Put-in-Bay every summer! Take Miller's Ferry from Catawba Point, rent a golf cart and spend the day visiting the many shops and eateries in the island. Stop to have a drink at the Round Bar and Mojito Bay and listen to the entertainment.

Put-In-Bay is a great place to visit! My wife and I took the Jet Express over and experienced a great day of fun. We did not rent a golf cart and found that walking was just fine for us. We visited the Perry Monument and checked out several places to eat and bars. Some places are not very suitable for children but you can figure that out pretty easily. We had and great time and look forward to a return visit!

The whole island is well cared for, neat and tidy. I spend several hours driving around and looking at things. Golf carts outnumber cars about 5 or 10 to one. It's really a very pleasant island. The Miller Ferry to the island was quick and painless, except for the fare. I went on a Tuesday in mid-June, and it was not really busy.

If you are looking for nightlife and a place to party hardy then this is the place for you. Drunks in golf carts are not my idea of fun. While the scenery is very pretty, it is a tourist trap with lodging being somewhat expensive. Not a place for large families with little kids. 18 to 40 crowd for sure. Costs you money for ferry even if you don't spend a dime for anything else. Don't bring your car, parking is at a premium. Been here, will not come back.

South Bass Island was just OK in our opinion. Some shops were closed, the water side of the shoping area was under construction, and it did not have the same historic feel like Mackinac Island that we had hoped for. More geared for adults than children, our grand daughter loved the ferry ride out to the island, and the golf carts on the island, but if not for that she would have been pretty well bored. Just an average an OK experience.
J.

Excellent spot to party!!!! It is geared towards young adults however there is something for everyone. There are a few family based activities for children like Perry's monument and the caves. I plan to go back later this month!!

My neighbor has been asking us to go to Put In Bay for 4 years and the time just was never right, but this year it hit on a perfect date and we spent a 4 day weekend on the island. It was perfect weather and the camp site was beautiful. We came over on Millers ferry and all tent camped - the tent sites are the best, they over look the beach and lake from a small cliff. The park is small and you have to book early if you want a prime site. Most weekends of the summer are booked if you don't get them 6 months in advance. If you have been there before be careful they are under new management and have changed some of the site numbers.
The town was nice and in the day busy and welcoming, on weekend nights very busy and more like a college frat party. We did all the sites and the tower was a great view. We rented a golf cart one day for 6 and did everything in a day, the rest of the time we relaxed at the campsite and beach.

Clean, lovely island. Plenty to do. Take a jog along the waterfront. Drive the golf car around. Lots of fun for young and old.

My daughter asked to come here for her birthday. We had been once before and while it was fun, it also got pretty dicey in the evening so this time we went early in the day on a Thursday in fall. This was a much better option with kids in tow. It's a pretty low key day trip. I think the kids' favorite part was having the playground to themselves. We'll probably be back.

We had fat-tire bikes and cruised around the island for a long morning this fall. The tourists were all gone as were many of the seasonal, local residents, so we had the island to ourselves. It is mostly flat so the old Huffy's were just fine. It was so peaceful!

Took the ferry to the island for the day; it was crowded but not in a terrible way. All the golf carts near ferry dock were sold out but there were more available after we took the bus into town. It was a fun day tooling around the island and seeing the sights in our 8 person golf cart! Lots of restaurants and bars, shops around the park in Put-In Bay; nice views of the marina. It was lovely!

We enjoyed a couple nights on the Island in September. Toured the Crystal Cave, Perry's Cave, Perry Memorial, cruised around the island on the Golf Cart. The Vibe we got was this place is probably party-city in the Summer (Northern Key West atmosphere).

We took the ferry over and visited the island on a Monday. It was slow in the morning and the crowds picked up slightly around lunchtime. We rented a golf cart and drove all over the island, which was nice. We didn’t really go into many shops, we just enjoyed the island. We kept seeing signs about respecting the community, but there were a few obnoxious people on carts and I could totally understand why. It’s worth a visit as the island is beautiful and we loved the Perry monument.

This island feels, on a hot day, like a resort in the Caribbean. It feels like you've just got off a cruise ship and you're in a port or in a town and what's most interesting is you're essentially in Sandusky. This for me is the good part!
The bad part is it is really just a big bar, feels a little lawless with the golf carts though they do seem to check your bags when you enter bars so not completely lawless.
There doesn't seem to be much of a beach or at least not easy to find. I was looking for a beach like Myrtle Beach because of the whole vibe and it doesn't seem like there is one.

Put n Bay has the Bar crowd for adults and it also has many things off the bar road for family's.
Just depends on your thing. Don't take the kids down town especially at night and on the week ends if you don't want them to see all the goings on.
Boats and more boats and of course the Miller Ferry or Jet Express. Your choice. If your planning a week end get away, do it in advance. Most week ends will find the sleeping areas booked solid.
Dockage is also getting hard to find. So plan ahead.

We took the Jet Express over from Kelley's Island and spent the day at Put-In-Bay. I definitely recommend renting a golf cart and exploring the entire island first. Then you can have lunch at The Upper Deck at The Boardwalk. Be sure to check out the Monument and then you can go bar hopping :)

If you love the smell of grapes growing and fall colors this is the place to visit! The weather is still nice being they are on the lake and water temp helps them stay warmer than on the mainland. We rented a golf cart to get around to see the sights and views from the shore. We stayed at The Commodore Resort and had a spotless room and very helpful, friendly staff. We have stayed at other places in the past and will return to the Commodore from now on!! Heineman's Winery is also a great place to enjoy a bottle of island wine. At night Mr. Ed's is the place to be.

I have visited Put-In-Bay many times over the last 25 years and have enjoyed the wonderful scenery, historical landmarks, food and drink. I wanted to share the experience with my children and grandchildren but South Bass Island (particularly the town of Put-In-Bay) has changed from a family-friendly coastal getaway to a loud summer drinking party fest. If you wish to visit the Island and enjoy its peaceful, relaxing seaside vibe, be sure to either visit during off-season weekends (early-mid May or after Labor Day) or during the week (Mon-Thurs). Summer weekends bring large crowds of raucous partygoers and relaxing with a picnic in Harborside park, finding a parking spot for your golf cart or even walking the sidewalks/shops is difficult. Keep in mind that many PIB attractions (Perry Monument/Museum, Caves, Antique Car Museum, etc.) do not open until right before Memorial Day. We loved our stay in Port Clinton/Marblehead but will probably skip Put-In-Bay in favor of a destination our whole family can enjoy.

In September 2018, my wife and I spent a relaxing day at Put-In-Bay, Ohio, which is on an island in Lake Erie just north of Port Clinton/Catawba Island. Put-In-Bay/South Bass Island struck me as a mini-version of Mackinac Island except cars are allowed here. Some ferry lines to Put-In-Bay shut down in September which is why we took the Miller Ferry over to the island as pedestrians. Transit time was around 20 minutes. Do note the dock locations for the Ferry lines in Put-In-Bay as the Miller Ferry Dock there is around 2 miles to the center of town while another Ferry Line has a Dock within walking distance of the town.
Regarding the Miller Ferry, they have gift shops and restrooms at both of their docks. Their fares seemed reasonable to me and they operate on a first come, first served basis. Note-Consider printing out the restaurant/lodging/things to do discount coupons on their website. On the mainland, Miller has 5 free parking lots with Lot 1 being the closest to their loading dock followed by Lots 2 & 3 which are west of the dock on Water Street. There is also a pay parking lot near the dock which during peak travel times you may have to use. Miller transports a limited number of cars and even bicycles, but gives priority to walk on pedestrians if space becomes a factor. On our trip over, there were two eighteen wheeler trucks that consumed most of the parking spots available on the ferry. Do note Miller's vehicle guidelines particularly on roundtrip restrictions between the mainland and the island.
Ok, you're now at the Miller Ferry Dock at the south end of Put-In-Bay. To get around the island and depending on your lifestyle, you can walk, jog, rent a bike near the dock, rent a golf cart near the dock or you already have your car and are ready to go. Personally, I'd pass on bringing your car over (unless you're staying for a bit) and apply the car ferry fee to a bike or golf cart rental. The car option just doesn't give you the same up close island experience. As we wanted to see as much as we could within our allotted time, have some protection against inclement weather and have a spot to store my wife's shopping purchases, we opted to rent a golf cart for the day (instead of being charged by the hour). Plus its fun to tool around in a golf cart and feel a fresh breeze in your face.
After getting a golf cart, our first stop was to visit the nearby South Bass Island Lighthouse and see some views of Lake Erie. We then travelled on Langram Road for around 1.5 miles and peeked into a General Store and got some refreshments. We then travelled another mile to the intersection of Catawba and Delaware. From this intersection, we were able to walk around and hit the various shops, boutiques and restaurants in this quaint town. The tree covered town park starts at this same intersection and contains public restrooms. As it was September, many shops had end of summer sales going on.
Just northeast of town is the (Commodore) Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial and visitor's center managed by the US National Park Service. Tour$ are available including access to the monuments observation deck which is 317 feet above Lake Erie. We visited a winery on Bayview and another one on Catawba for wine tastings. We passed by at least three neat outside bars. One had a Tiki Hut theme. Another had a Margaritas theme. Beware of the Chocolate Cafe. If you go in, you won't come out empty handed. Kids might like seeing Perry's Cave, the Crystal Cave, the Butterfly House or the Carousel on Delaware Street.
My wife and I rounded out our day by driving our golf cart around the outer fringes of the island and taking in the views. We came across several grape vineyards and unique homes. In short, we enjoyed our day trip to Put-In-Bay.

The island has a cape cod feel in a small way it’s very pretty but we were there on the weekend too crowed. Go during the week.

Beautiful island with lots of restaurants, bars, & fun things to do! Kayaking, parasailing, Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial, etc. Short ferry or jet express ride over to it.

If you are a mature adult and want a relaxing stay visit this island during the weekdays.
It is a more party atmosphere on the weekends. Everyone we encountered was very pleasant and welcoming. We really had a wonderful getaway.

We took the Jet Express over to Put-In-Bay, South Bass Island on Labor Day. The Jet Express boat was very nice. I thought the ride over was so enjoyable with the wind in our hair and the beautiful scenery around us. The company that runs the Jet Express does a fine job. The boat is extremely well maintained, has friendly folks working the line and is SO punctual on the coming & going times.
Once over on S. Bass Island, Put-In-Bay, we rented a golf cart and drove all over the island which, took us about 1.5 hrs to do. We made a few stops at each of the beaches just to have a look. We had a blast riding around on the carts. After checking out the island, we decided to have lunch on the "Boardwalk" and then did a little
shopping. Everything is right there. Unfortunately we had to leave around 3:00 to head back home for the work week. We definitely want to go back to the island & stay in one of the Put-In-Bay hotels. We would love to check out more of the restaurants & bars in the evening. Definitely looks like a fun place!

Gorgeous Island. My family and I never wanted to leave. We rented a golf cart for one day and day dreamed about every house we found for sale. ;) The island is fairly small...we walked everywhere we went and rented the golf cart just for fun one day. Affordable and beautiful. We can't wait to come back!

Yes this place is in Ohio. The Key West of the north. There is great food and live music. Dance the night away or relax on a golf cart ride around the island.

I have been visiting South Bass Island (better known as Put-In-Bay) since I was a child. My husband and I visited this island several times a summer when we owned a boat. Now, we travel by ferry at least once a year.
You may have heard of some wild partying on Put-In-Bay, so if you are not into partying, I suggest you visit the island on a week day. There is something for every age group on the island.
For children, there is the 1917 Herschel Carousel which is one of the last merry-go-rounds in operation in the country. They will also enjoy exploring caves or visiting a butterfly house.
For the millennials, there are many bars and entertainment spots throughout the island. Other visitors will enjoy the many restaurants, gift and novelty shops, wineries the South Bass Island Lighthouse, Perry's Victory and International Peace Monument and so much more!
Whether you would like to walk the docks in the marina, or just sit and relax in DeRivera Park, your trip to Put-In-Bay will be memorable.

This was a fun day trip for 4 people & 1 dog. The only reason I didn't give 5-stars is because a lot of the shops are filled with cheaper "touristy" klitsch & things are overpriced. It was a lot of fun riding around the island in a rented golf cart, the only way to see the whole island, although golf cart rental was quite pricey. We were told that if we returned the golf cart early, we'd get a partial refund, but that didn't happen...different person running the place when we returned that afternoon. It was about a 15-20 minute ferry ride over to the island & the same amount of time back, $15/person round-trip to walk on. Dogs are welcome on the ferry as long as they are leashed & are friendly, no charge. We were there in the off-season, but it was apparent that during the season the wait to catch a ferry could be quite long.

The island is loaded with restaurants, shops, and places to visit such as historical sites, wineries and natural areas. There is also various types of lodging if you want to stay overnight. Nothing spectacular, but you can enjoy a very pleasant visit.

got there late in the day, but what we did see was great, you definitely need a way to get around, get there early to get a golf cart.

We rode the Miller Ferry over to the Island and rented a 4 person cart from E's Carts. Millers has a handicap service up to the top of the hill if you need it! Signed up and paid online for the cart and walked up to the window and it was ready to go! We stopped at the Biergarten at the Goat and they let us sit outside and eat the picnic lunch I packed while enjoying a cold drink from their menu! Then off to a couple parks and the Perry Monument! More carting the Island, more parks and a stop downtown to look around. Later in the day we ate at the Boardwalk Restaurant overlooking the lake, Wonderful meal!

Weather was good for our stay. We took an SUV over on the island. Rented a condo that sleeps 8. Pretty nice accommodations. Toured a winery resale shop and lots of bars. Service at all the establishments was good. We traveled on Wed. to Fri. to avoid the younger crowds

We had our first trip to Put-in-Bay, First of all you need to have a Big Wallet as everything is very expensive! Jet Express with rack you $60 for 2 people, a day in a golf cart for 4 was $80 (no coupons accepted on Saturdays) food and drink is just as bad...it is more of a party place then a tourist attraction, it was fun for a day trip but I couldn't afford to be there more than one day. I would never bring children with me, just stuff they shouldn't hear or see! they have a few attractions that are not really much to see or do.

This Island has a ton of history, activities, like biking, golf cart rentals, a short fun par 3 golf course, down near the beautiful island heavily treed campground as well as a few winery's. and a ton of other activities. Or you can stay in a historic B&B & make your own fantastic walking or biking stroll to tour the island homes (very friendly owners) or go down to the historic light house near millers ferry. Also there are a ton of bars & restaurants with bands playing ALL types of music.

Golf cart rentals are the easiest way to get around but look for a coupon in the local travel brochures for Miller Fairy and the golf carts. Lots of restaurants/bars, tshirt shops, and Heineman winery was a must for this return visitor.

This was our third visit.......relaxing, partying, all around good time what ever your taste. Nothing to dislike, however if you are not into late night partying.....get off main street by around midnight.

When we went to PiB 20 years ago it was a beautiful quiet island. However, the last time we went, it was quite the party town. You can still rent bikes or walk around the island, but it is definitely more of a tourist trap than it used to be.

There is so much to do. There is way more than just restaurants, and bars. There are small museums, Perrys monument, a fishery thats owned by The Ohio State University, a light house. There is a state park where one can camp, two wineries, a cave, the worlds largest Giode that you can walk inside. Also you can walk through shallow water, and walk around Buckeye Island which is uninhabited.

We took a day trip to visit this island for the first time. We arrived, took a shuttle bus downtown, rented a golf cart for about an hour and a half until we decided to turn it in and just walk. There is a huge amount of touristy things to do but if you are looking for quiet and relaxation you can find some areas where that can be accomplished also. I feel it is safe to say that there is probably something for everyone here.

I love Put In Bay! It's quaint and has great restaurants and shopping. I recommend taking the Jet Express over. The ride is quicker only about 30 minutes. The is a small playground in the park when you first get of the boat. Also rent a golf cart. You will happy you did. I have not spent the night there, but I have heard the hotels are small and have very friendly staff. Go and enjoy!

Rented a golf cart for our day excursions after coming over by ferry. Easy island to navigate good food available many places, ice cream shops, usual tourist shopping. Camping sites available on the island and many options for lodging.

Friends living in western PA have been trying to visit Put In Bay for years and we finally made it for a weekend. Being Sept we took Miller's Ferry because Jet Express was running on limited schedule and besides Miller's Ferry is less money and Lime Kiln Dock was closer to where we were staying near the south end of the island. Free parking at Miller's Ferry can be found in the nearest lot so get their early before it fills up. There is a large bus that takes you from Lime Kiln dock to downtown but does not stop along the way. There are smaller taxi buses that for $3/pp will take you just about anywhere on the island. The island is small (3 miles long and 1.5 miles wide) and very navigable by bicycle or golf cart so no need to pay the high ferry prices to take your car over. Besides, a golf cart or bike is much more fun! A 2 person to 8 person golf cart ($60/day) or bicycle can be rented just about anywhere on the island and during the summer I would suggest making reservations prior to arrival. Be aware vehicle driving laws apply when driving a golf cart; no drinking/driving, use of turn signals, etc. Except for a few restaurants and Heineman winery/cave most shops, restaurants, bars, winery, brewery, etc. are located on the waterfront in Put In Bay proper. There are lots to do for a weekend; 2 wineries (one that includes a tour of the cave underneath & wine tasting and an outside wine garden); the other inside a historical mansion that includes a tour of the property, a brewery/restaurant, a few wooded parks each with a short 1 mile hiking trail, a lighthouse, some great restaurants (gotta try the fried perch at Topsy Turvey's, fancy dinner at Goat Soup & Whiskey and breakfast at The Forge). In the summertime be sure to make restaurant reservations. The Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial with a visitor center and small swimming beach and lots of souvenir shops; something for everyone at any age.

There is a lot of things to see and do on the island, but be prepared to pay for them. Nothing is real cheap, especially the food.

I used to go camping here every year with family growing up & always looked forward to it because it was so much fun!
I went back earlier this month & it was just like I remembered!
It's great for any reason to visit. It seems to be a party town but it's very family-friendly!!
& my cousins wedding was beautiful!

This is a fun island. State Parks, a national monument, history, bars, pubs, shops, and attractions. You can rent a bike or a golf car to bomb around. Plenty of hotel/motel/B and B choices for an overnight stay. This is a great choice for a family, or for those that enjoy a good pub crawl. Have fun.

This was a great weekend getaway before the kids went back to school. Lots of fun things to do!! Really nice getaway!!

just a lot of fun - lots of things to do and see. People couldn't be nicer and more helpful. The scenery is beautiful

Rode Miller's Ferry over, then rented a golf cart. Had a wonderful time scooting around looking at homes and visiting shops. A little research revealed there are only 70 households on the island with a permanent (not seasonal) population of 138.

I took my son with me to South Bass Island during the week. We took the Miller Ferry from Catawba. They have free parking nearby. You will pass parking lots charging $5.00 to park to get to the free parking. The ferry runs often during the summer so we had minimal wait time for the next ferry. Based on another person's review, we rented our golf cart from E's Golf Cart. They were excellent. Renting a golf cart was the best way to see the island. Parking can be difficult in the town, but just have patience. We ended up having a ton of fun going around the center of the town looking for a parking spot.
Perry's Monument was wonderful. We had our national park pass so we were able to get in free, otherwise it was $3.00 per person to take the elevator to the top. The views were fantastic! Definitely stop in the national park center to view the short film about the Battle of Lake Erie.
I also agree with another reviewer that if you are family oriented, go during the week and leave earlier in the day (we left at 3:00).

We rode the ferry with our bikes and spent the day riding bikes around the island, stopping in a few stores, and eating lunch/dinner. It was a really fun and relaxing day! It reminds me of Key West but not as big or as tropical.

The Bass Islands and particularly South Bass Island and Put in Bay have a special place in my heart. It is my first memory of a family vacation. It is also where I had my honeymoon.
There is so much to see and do on the spec of land in the Western Basin of Lake Erie. From the downtown saloons and restaurants where there is always a reason to be festive to the back roads and byways that transport you to a different world. Unique properties and spectacular views of Lake Erie and adjacent islands truly will make you feel like you jetted off to a foreign land. The pace is slower, there is no need to try and out do someone else. If you just relax and enjoy what is there you will have a wonderful time.
Generally, this is a family destination, with bike and golf cart rentals, with caves to explore and unique historical and educational points of interest, with the most prominent being the Perry Victory and International Peace Memorial.
One of the biggest weekends is the third weekend of September. It is an early New Year's celebration and official end of the tourist season. It is one huge party. Mardi Gras meets the Midwest. This weekend is primarily for adults due to the party atmosphere.
If you are a boater there are excellent docks and anchorages. Be cautious of Storms particularly from the southwest. Lake Erie is notorious for horrific waves during storms.
If you plan to stay on the island book far in advance, B&B's and other lodging is sold out weeks and months in advance.
Reading back on what I've written trying to capture the vibe of South Bass Island, I think it in a sense feels like a New England fishing village. It has a very romantic maritime vibe and if you squint your eyes and listen to the sounds you could imagine being in the Florida Keys.
When you have a chance to go, GO! Whatever you take away in your memories of this place, I'm sure it will be great.

Love the island beautiful place to visit :) great entertainment day or night... family stuff to do during day then adult nightlife begins must sees are Crystal caves

We weren't sure whether it'd be worth the trip but we had s great time and we're glad we went.
The Jet Express ferry was fun in itself, only took 30 minutes and was very scenic.
We rented golf carts which I highly recommend so we saw and experienced a large portion of the island. There are a ton of restaurants and bars and plenty of things to do with the kids.
Definitely check out Put in Bay if you get the chance.

This island is dominated by Put in Bay, which from our visits in 2006 and 2014, is becoming more of a hard-core party destination, as time passes. Its now more difficult to visit downtown, with a vehicle, because of all the golf-carts and the restrictive parking, particularly with the construction going on by the water-front. Still and all, the island has several days worth of interesting sights to see, shops to visit, and some neat historical and natural wonders. Definitely a place to add to your itinerary, just be aware that the real action begins at sundown, and doesn't end until the wee hours, and if you don't want to deal with the aftermath, you might want to seek lodging on one of the other, quieter islands nearby...

The major attractions Perry's Monument, and the PIB museum were very nice, and the staffs at each location and the visitor information center as well were very friendly and helpful. And the annual historical auto races were also great as r=there were for them many last years I attended them. . Unfortunately, the new paid parking rules were very poorly done and unsatisfactory, There were signs up every ware saying paid parking,. But no clear information about how to pay them. Being old fashion, my cell phone isn't a smart one so it was impossible to pill any information up. So we avoided or boycotted all the downtown restraints that didn't have their own lot,

We were really looking forward to this trip but were very disappointed. We went during the week to avoid the drunk parties. The problem is that many of the business's are still not open (due to Covid and labor shortages) but no one tells you this until you get there. The business's that are open are open very odd hours. We always got the feeling that no one wants tourists there. The food is awful. Truly awful. The only good place to eat is Goat, Soup Whiskey. Most of the places that sell breakfast are closed during the week. The public "swim beach" is a joke. Looks like it hasn't been maintained in years. Perry's monument is closed. We still had fun cruising on golf carts and taking in the scenery; but it wasn't at all what we thought it would be. Biggest mistake we made was not bringing our car over. Take your car! We will not be back.

We just spent 5 nights on the island at the Chapman House. The holiday weekend crowd in town was pretty loud and a bit crazy:) But into the week it quieted and we visited a lot of sites that most people probably don't even know exist. So make sure to check out some of the parks, museum and visitor centers. We really enjoyed biking our way around to various spots, it really allows you to see the scenery is a slower manner that zipping along in a golf cart:) We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will return again!

We were surprised to find this little gem. I had been to Put in bay a couple times before, but never knew this was here. Beautiful lake area with kayaking, boating, and even a nice park, where you can relax, and pack a lunch and sit at the picnic tables to enjoy. So pretty here. We enjoy it a lot There is a rock beach here, but many people were laying out on the grass and on beach towels. Also, there is a small walk -up deli type stand that served various foods. I think Ice cream too. There is also a campsite up the hill. Great place to have a fun time.

Some truly lovely natural areas, but if you visit in the summer expect rowdy crowds, lots of people drinking, expensive meals / hotels and way too many golf carts! Too bad they can't restrict the numbers who come. Also, very few street signs.
The tour bus was great - very informative, highly recommend.

There’s really nothing else like Put In Bay. The island is a lot of different things to a lot of different audiences. The partying and the bars take center stage, but nature lovers, history buffs, geology fans, artists, campers, tourists and more can enjoy this one-of-kind Island. Kelley’s Island is the girl you take home to meet your parents. Reserved and demure. PIB is like rough one night stand. You’ll wake in the morning hungover, broke and a little bit guilty but, man you had FUN!

We should have turned around as soon as we saw the line to get over to the island, nothing but a bunch of drunken 20 somethings. I had been to Put In Bay as a child & had fond memories of it but it's nothing like I remember. Golf carts for days, no escaping the obnoxious drunks. Screaming & yelling all night long. Couldn't get out of there soon enough. Luckily we only booked 2 nights. Will never return. All that being said, my husband and I are far from prudes, we like to tie one on as much as the next person but this place is a tourist hell. If you like Daytona beach on spring break then this is your place. Otherwise do yourself a favor & avoid it.

Unfortunately, we opted to stay at the State campground. Stay away on the weekends because it tends to get loud from people coming back from the bars. We had 3 bad experiences camping there, despite the fact that we specifically planned our visit during the week to avoid the weekend craziness. The camp sites are too close together, especially right on the lake. If you have a 50-year-old couple looking to relax and enjoy the view, right next to a bunch of 20-year-old rowdies, drunk and whooping it up, it is a recipe for disaster. What does this campground want to be - a party place or a nice family relaxing get-away?? We were there 6/5/18 thru 6/8/18, had yet ANOTHER issue with fighting and rowdiness right next to us. This time, with one of the maintenance employees, no less, who was planning on having a party right next to us until the office put a stop to it. We are never coming to this state park again, which is unfortunate because it is beautiful, but we're not there to party, we're there to get away from it all.

I enjoy the ferry ride to Bass Island and walking around watching people and eating. Some times I meet up with friends that have boats and we hangout on their boat.

Went on a Saturday. Arrived 10am and had no problem with parking ($10 daily). Walked right up to purchase our tickets for the Ferry over to the Island. The golf cart rentals were sold out for the day. We arrived around 10am and there were plenty if carts to rent, but going fast. Golf cart is a must to have if you plan on site seeing. If you are just heading into town for the day take the $3 bus ride.
Plenty to see and do with the kids and can be done in a day.
Planning on returning for an adult trip!!!

Having an adult playground in your back yard cant be easy, but the residence of the island seem to take everything in stride and with no small amount of grace, turning everything into a part of the island charm decorating houses to reflect the island vibe.

South Bass Island is Superb Place which we visited during our trip of Ohio. Put in Bay is excellent place which I remember forever.

I grew up in Florida, and know how overdone the tourist trade can be. Not here. The island is a get away from the "real world". I loved ever second. The fact the cars aren't encouraged on the island makes even more lovely. I recommend even person go here to just de-stress and focus on enjoying life. :)

There were many different things to do. Our favorite part was really just driving the gold cart all of rate island. We'll definitely be back!
Note - there are restrooms and showers in the park in the center of town.

I had previously visited the island so I knew what to expect. My wife and I thought we'd take the kids out for a one-night trip, knowing our kid-friendly attractions would be limited.
The kids had fun, mostly riding in the golf cart. The attractions were way too pricey and lacked fun. Video games, go karts and a cave tour are pretty much it as far as the kid-friendly attractions go. They had the most fun at the playground in the park.
For the adults, there's a lot of food, drink and shopping to be had.

Spent Labor Day weekend on Sound Bass Island. The island was celebrating the bicentennial of the Battle of Lake Erie with the Tall Ships so there was a lot going on. The history of the island is interesting. A visit to the historical society museum is worth the time. Didn't spend much time visiting the bars but there a plenty of them if that's what you like to do. Leave your car on the mainland and take Miller Ferry service then rent a golf cart. It's much easier to get around the island on foot or by golf cart (plus it's just fun). If you like boats and laid back living Put-in-Bay will meet your needs.

Rent a golf cart ($54 for the whole day--way cheaper than Kelley's Isand) and tour the island. About the only thing missing from the island, and thus no excellent rating, is the lack of real nice beach. There are some decent pools and a waterpark, and the state park beach is Ok, just not as big and sandy as you'd expect.
Weekends can get nutty with the party-goers and the crowds, but a beautiful July Wednesday was low on both--plus the last ferry out to Catawba on a weekday is 9pm most weeks, so you miss the craziness anyway.
Lots of quiet roads to ride along, a few nature preserves to walk through, and one is on the water. A huge harbor to check out, Perry's Monument, Perry's Cave, a 3 par golf course on the water, a trip to Stone Lab on Gibraltor Island, and too many shops to hit in 1 days time. Islanders are a friendly bunch as are most of the workers in the restaurants and shops.
Don't worry about the negative reviews, the island has changed--but for the better for families. Islanders and the working staffs watch out for kids and families, and most of tourists are families buzzing around on golf carts, The police also keep things in line for the most part

This Island is one of the neatest places around. With all the shopping, museums, wineries, swimming, touring, restaurants and much, much more you can't get enough! Take a day trip there and you'll want to go back and stay for a week!

We visited Kelleys and Put-in-Bay on back-to-back days and it was quite a contrast. Kelleys was very quiet with not a lot of visitors while PiB was very busy with a lot more activity. If you like quiet PIB is not your location. Having said that, really enjoyed the variety in restaurants and shops that PiB had to offer. We rode Miller Ferry which is much cheaper than jet boats and were pleased with service. We went during wesk so avoided party crew.

We took the ferry over from Catawba Island. Miller's Ferry was $7 per person one way, and if you took a car, add $16 each way on top of that. Once you are on the island, you can rent a golf cart, as we did, or catch shuttle bus to downtown. The bus is only $2.50 per person, but they hadn't started running when we got there at around 8am, so we rented golf cart. It would have been $55 for all day. We only used it for about 2-3 hours and the cost was around $24 or so. That was plenty of time to tool around town and visit a few places and go on a hike through the woods. Downtown was very quaint and inviting with lots of shops and eating/drinking places. We didn't see a place to swim, but they did have a marina. Beautiful homes on the island also.

We head up to SBI at least two times a year. The trick to having a nice relaxing time is to head up on Sunday. The island is much quieter between Sunday-Thursday. The weekends can be pretty loud and crazy. Lots of restaurants to choose from.

When you read the reviews this is the place to be:/ Haven't been here for thirty years, wanted to see the old girl once again:) Its been turned into a bar partying beach town for college kids and older senior wanna be kids:) The ferry ride over is beautiful:) The island shoreline with the boats in the water is equally beautiful. But, on the weekends this place is nuts:( Golf carts are out of control:( If YOU want to rent one, reserve one a month in advance, probably NOT going to get one walking up. I heard soooooo many people disappointed they couldn't get a kart. At an average price of $55 a day and toooo many in the streets, I say keep it. Would I rent a bike? No! Once again the streets are narrow and over crowded with golf karts:( And it's only a matter of time until someone gets killed on the main road going into or out of town:( The roads once again are NARROW as can be and no wider then thirty years ago when I was here last:( If your going to book a kart or bicycle, do so in town, your survival rate will increase greatly:) Souvenir shops are weak overall in my opinion, once again you won't see anything here you won't see at any beach touristy town. So, if you drink and party, then go. Food everywhere for the most part, with more drinking:( Is it a place for young kids? NO!And THAT is a solid no! Parking so you can take the ferry over to the island can be at least a 1/2 mile walk:( We were on the island and around the town in a few hours, then time go:( That was with eating lunch, simply not much to see or do.

We went there for the fishing. The beach was clean. The pier was very nice to fish. Great place for families.

When booking a room on South Bass ask if there are any golf cart specials that accompany the room. It is well worth it.

I had not been to Put-In-Bay in nearly 15 years, and it was just as I had remembered. My husband and I needed some much needed adult time away from our 7 month old and this is just the place. Mainly catering to an adult party atmosphere there are many places to grab a quick meal and a drink (or two, or five) all within walking distance of each other downtown. If you're on a tight budget, this may not be the ideal destination. You'll be hard pressed to find a drink under $5 and most meals are $10 or more however, the island and good times make it worth the investment. Even if you're not a huge partier, you can rent golf carts or bicycles and tool around the island for the day.

Went to South Bass Island also known as Put-In-Bay. Took a ferry ride to the Island, nice pleasant ride. When we got tho the Island we rented a golf cart, I highly recommend this. Went to the Perry Monument, it was great to be at the top and see everything around the Island. We rented a jet ski, the water was very rough, thirty minutes was enough. Over all pleasant visit.

We came here twice a year and it's a lot of fun. Jet ski rental Is right here and they have locked showers and bathrooms close to eat campsite. New picnic tables and fire pits were placed this year.

The island is wonderful. The best way to get around is by golf cart. They are rented everywhere. I prefer the electric. Much quieter. Lots of fun.

We come to the Bay once yearly with a group of friends. It's so much fun with something for everyone - great restaurants, shopping, dancing and boozing! We personally don't travel here with our kids but see several families having a great time in the park, at the go carts or at Perry's Cave and putt-putt. Take a quick boat ride to Middle Bass or Kelleys island for the day. Take a biplane ride. Or just kick back and relax on a wonderful Lake Erie island!

What a great island to visit and have fun on. Yes, there are lots of bars, but there is still plenty of family friendly activities to do here. Make sure to rent a golf cart, so that you can get the whole experience of the entire island.

From Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial to the restaurants and winery, I recommend the place. Have money for the ferry ride, unless you are lucky enough to have a boat.

As a day trip, a trip to South Bass Island is a fairly expensive proposition for a family. There is the cost of the ferry and then the cost of transportation once you are on the island.
We took the Miller Ferry which puts you on the island away from the downtown area. I will certainly check into the Jet Express next time which I hear is a little more expensive but does let you off closer to the downtown area.
There were buses available at the dock, but we were not quite sure how much we could see from them so we chose to rent golf carts. It was $70 for a 6 person cart for all day. Even though this was more expensive, it was a better option because we had several people who couldn't walk far.
There were many great restaurant options on the island and everyone raved about their food at the Boathouse grill.
It was quite cold and windy on the day of our visit so we didn't get to take advantage of everything that the island had to offer. There is shopping, caves, historical sites and just enough of those touristy things your children are dying to do!
I would live to return on a warm summers day and take advantage of all this island has to offer.

Put-in-Bay also called South Bass is an island in the western end of Ohio's Lake Erie. Erie all around in its purple blue and a wide variety of yachts, sailboats and luxury ships cruising or stationing just in front of you and you are circling the whole island in a bicycle or in a golf cart enjoying each inch of the landscape and occasionally stopping over to sip the locally produced wine or grape juice is something marvellous which no traveller will ever forget.

Gorgeous and quiet this time of year, easily accessible by ferry, easy to navigate entire island with rented golf cart.

The south bass island state park is primarily for camping and has a limited space for visitors who can relax and enjoy the beach. Restroom, volleyball and food facilities were available. People were either relaxing under the shades or playing on the beach or enjoying the water activities. It's a place where you just lazily do whatever u feel like!

The camp sites are poorly designated and cover large rocks and hilly.customer service is hostel and basically unhelpful.
Showers are run down and poorly maintained and the rest rooms are inadequate for the number of guess.
Put-in-bay was interesting and fun.

We have been coming here for 20+ summers. We love it here. So many things to do and see. And plenty of places to destress!!!

This is a great day trip as it is located about an hour from Toledo or Cleveland.
Of the three islands (middle Bass and Kelly’s Island are the others) South Bass/Put in Bay has the most things to do and is the most visited.
Plenty of things to do on the island for a day including the Perry Memorial National Monument, and a family fun center that has a cave, mini golf, and gem mining. There are also several small nature trails and it is fun to rent a golf cart and just drive around the island.
However, on summer weekends, the island can get rowdy and it is definitely not a place for kids. Would not recommend staying overnight either on the island, if you have kids, as almost all the hotels are adult oriented.
However, coming here on a fall weekend after Labor Day or during a summer weekday is much more relaxed and family friendly.

We went over on Miller's Ferry on Monday and returned on Friday. It was less crowded in the middle of the week.

Came with husband and young adult family. We stayed Sun-Tues. it was perfect. Great weather, enjoyed some crowd Sunday at restaurants and bars but rest of visit was toned down and family/couple oriented. Loved the golf cart transportation and very easy to get around island. Visited Perry Monument, Lighthouse, State Park, PIB Winery and of course the restaurants and bars. Great music/bands, food and service. Used Jet Express and very convenient. Definitely will return.

We rented the carts and we were ALL OVER that island. Plenty to see and lots of eateries. Fun for all ages.

Make sure you visit Ferrell House Bed & Breakfast, Debbie and Scotty Ferrell offer an amazing level of hospitality! The breakfast they serve is to die for...and well worth over $20! It was nice to cart into "town" and then have a quieter place to relax, siesta, nap, or just chill out from the day of adventures!! We promise...this B&B is THE place to stay if you are respectful even when you are on the island to party...and truly appreciate awesome hospitality!!

Great resort style ambience. Great visit! Lovely restaurants and attractions especially Perry's Monument. Taking the car onto the ferry to the island and back was fun!

Make sure you see the lighthouse there.
You can get around by foot, bike or golf cart.. The fees are not bad at all for the golf carts!!! We rent one for a couple hours or so!!
We have not stayed all night on the island, but plan to soon!!
We take the Jet Express over to the Island, it is the fastest way over there.
They have a putt-putt on the island, it is fun, generally pretty busy though.
There are cute shops and music to enjoy at some of the taverns.

I saw all the bars in town, but I am glad that during the weekday there were no drunk people to be seen. The place was quiet and clean. I gave it an "average" rating because I was a little overwhelmed by the number of golf carts. I worried every time I saw them sharing the roads with big trucks. It was too windy and foggy for kayaking, but I enjoyed seeing the water fowl and lake sights. All the shops and attractions I visited were manned by friendly, polite people. I appreciated that!

We have been visiting the island annually together for over 40 years. In the beginning, it was more laid back and intimate. Just a few restaurants, bars, and wineries. Over the years it has grown into a crowded mess. Nothing intimate about it. Too many businesses crammed into a small place. We did manage to find sanctuary at the Put in Bay winery. I fear our old go to place has turned into the Walmart of islands.

A dozen or so bars have bands starting at 2pm. Don't miss Mad Dog at the round house at 2pm almost every day.

For our trip, the island and this campground worked great! My sister and our friend wanted to do a 2-day lake camping trip where we did nothing but relax and take a break from our crazy schedules. Our friend is volunteering in Indiana for a year, so we were looking for a place where we could meet half way.
We booked a campsite overlooking the lake for two nights mid-week, and spent almost all of our time at our tent site or at the beach -- it was wonderful.
Thursday afternoon we did go in to town to the Boardwalk. (Parking was a bear.) We got ice cream and popped in and out of shops. As evening approached, the crowds and noise levels grew. We retreated back to our campsite and did some star gazing.
The main things we didn't like were: the tent sites overlooking the lake don't have electricity, are really small, and have no barrier between you and your neighbors. But we brought a battery pack and inverter along, had nice neighbors, and really wanted the view. Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be easily bent out of shape. :) All in all it was a wonderful time!

I’m glad we picked a Tuesday to go to the island, crowds were small:) Taking the Miller’s Ferry over and back will cost you $16 a person😳 We rented a golf cart as soon as we got off the boat at the top of the ramp, $85 all day. We had a great lunch at Hooligans Irish Pub:) Drove around the entire island:) and walked around the very small square. What few shops they have are way over priced. Many places were closed maybe due to no help. We spent 4 hours on the island and the party was over:( Simply didn’t get a bang for our buck:(

This island is hopping! We rented a golf cart at Jet Express (Port Clinton) prior to ferrying over to the island. This island clean, pretty, and much bigger than I thought. There's two wineries, lots of restaurants and bars, places to camp, kayak, and Perry Memorial.

South Bass island/ Put in Bay was recommended to us vs. Kelley's Island as having more to do.. Really?! We had nice weather and struggled to find stuff to do, this place has a couple of tourist traps, a bunch of bars, and is not what we would consider to be a relaxing vacation spot!

Love Put in Bay. More family oriented during the week. More party atmosphere at night on weekends. Great place to relax and hear live music. Plenty to do.

First time ever coming here and I loved every minute of it!!! The drinks the food the wine the bars the pools and the cabin we stayed in along with the lake and golf carts shopping and activities and things to do and see!! we will be back again!!!

The island makes you a lay back. You can wonder about on the train, bike, golf cart or on foot. It is a small town created just for fun. The attractions are expensive, and really not very attractive.
Drunkards Paradise
I am by far not a prude, but I wish I had spent the day elsewhere than Put-In-Bay. I was planning on going to Kelly's Island, but several locals convinced me to go to South Bass Island because there was so much more to do at Put-In-Bay. I soon realized that so much more to do equals drinking. If that is what you are looking for, it's a great bar hopping area. But I was wanting more of a sight seeing excursion. The ferry ride to and from Sandusky is a about 45 min and it made stops to Kelly's Island as well. The loud obnoxious drunks on the ride ruined both trips. I did rent a golf cart, for a reasonable price. There are lots of rental options. The further inland you get, they are a lil cheaper, but I got the one right by the dock since it would a close walk to get back on the ferry. There were also a lot of food options, but I was not going there to eat. The lighthouse memorial was a nice spot. There was also an old beacon house that had a lovely view. If you are looking to camp, there was also a park with several camp sites. There are two caves on the island that you can go into for a fee. I did Perry's Cave. While rich in history, very disappointing as far as a cave tour (especially when compared to other caves such as Blanchard Springs Caverns, AR). But it was not that expensive, so no harm no foul. Overall, meh.
