Nice church and place to see. The inside is beautiful and super to see up close. Stop in if in the area.

A very unique, beautiful and welcoming church. Even if you are not religious, the cathedral is a must-see.

The cathedral is breath-taking, many beautiful paintings and religious icons, and amazing stained glass windows. The first day we tried to visit it was on a Monday when they should have been open, except it was Martin Luther King day so we had to come back the next day.

The interior of the church is interesting. Quite a few stained glass windows. It does look old. I took quite a few photos with no problem.

Greek culture is new to me and we got quite an exposure here in Tarpon Springs. Religion is an important part of culture, We were luck to find a parishioner onsite at St. Nicholas Cathedral, and she explained much about the Orthodox church structure and the individual church itself. She even described the Easter worship and the wedding ceremonies. All of this information was shared in the sanctuary which was modeled after Orthodox headquarters in Constantinople(Istanbul) Turkey. The ornate artwork was breathtaking. It is likely we will not see such a place of worship such as this anywhere else in the United States. You can tell the members love it dearly.

A must see! Church is open daily for visits. Absolutely stunning replica of a cathedral in Constantinople

.Although I have been to Tarpon Springs on several occasions, I have never actually been inside St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral. On my most recent visit to Tarpon Springs in January 2016, I finally had the opportunity to do so. I was excited to finally see the Weeping Icon of St. Nicholas. It is just inside the entrance doors. It is said that the icon weeps during the Christmas season. The last time that he wept was on December 8, 1973. After close examinations by experts, no one can explain the phenomenon. I did purchased a pamphlet to learn more information about the icon.
The pamphlet also gave me a history of the church. Greeks, mostly from the Dodecanese Islands in the Aegean Sea started immigrating to Tarpon Spring in 1906 to work in the sponge industry. They brought with them their families, their culture, their traditions and their deep faith. The Greek community purchased property in 1907 and built a frame church with a seating capacity of 250. By 1935 the Greek population reach 2,700. The original frame church was no longer adequate. The community began the tough job of raising enough money for a new larger church. In January 1943 the new church was dedicated by Archbishop Athenagorase, late Patriarch of all Orthodoxy in Constantinople (Istanbul.) The beautiful domed church was built in the Neo- Byzantine style of architecture. Its model was Saint Sophia Cathedral in Istanbul. It is said to be one of the most beautifully decorated Greek Orthodox Church in the US. The marble altar was a gift from Greece and part of the Greek exhibit at the first New York World's Fair.
Although I am not of this religion, I was very moved by the many exquisite, ornate religious icons, paintings, art work and 23 stained glass windows in the church. It was very uplifting to sit in a pew and gaze at the beauty of the interior. There is so much to see and absorb. The three large chandeliers came from Czechoslovakia. We had called to schedule a talk but the church could not accommodate us. A very devout Greek lady, a church member was there and answered our questions, instead. She was so proud of her church. She explained the significance of the paintings and icons to us and showed us a relic on display in the church. If you wish to visit the church, it is open to visitors between the hours of 9-5. There is a book store on the church property. Outside, in front of the church there is a statue of an Epiphany diver.
On January 6th, the church holds an Annual Epiphany Celebration. The Epiphany is the celebration of the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist in the River Jordan. The Epiphany Celebration focuses around a blessing of the fisherman, their boats and the waters. This is followed by a Traditional Procession that includes the clergy, local children dressed in traditional costumes, a girl carrying a dove and the boys who will dive for a white wooden Epiphany cross. The cross is thrown by the visiting dignitaries into the Spring Bayou. Local Greek Orthodox boys between the ages of 16-18 dive into the water to retrieve it. It is a great honor to be the boy who retrieves the cross. He is said to be blessed for a year. I hope someday to attend this celebration.

Visual images on the walls and stained glass are spectatcular. Beautiful architecture. Transports you to a serenity of peace.

This beautiful cathedral is definitely worth your time. DONT miss it, very inspiring and peaceful place, regardless of faith.

We parked free right in front of the church. We loved the memorials and dedications outside. They speak of the rich heritage of this remarkable community.

After seeing a photo of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Tarpon Springs, Florida, we made a special trip to see it. What a beautiful church. It was open during the day and we were allowed to walk around and see all the wonderful art work. Worth the trip!

You won't regret it, it is beautiful. It is only open during service hours, there is a 8:15 and 10:15 service on Sundays.

The church was so beautiful. We learned much about the Orthodox way of doing church. The lady was so knowledgeable about the history of the church and the city.

Food was authentic and reasonable, rides and party, carnival atmosphere - What a beautiful church and very nice people.

This is a fine example of a traditional Greek Orthodox Church. Very important since the Epiphany Service and then the procession to the bayou is celebrated every year for the last 110 years. The traditional diving for the cross is seen all over the world and featured in the tv news and newspapers.

Every year they celebrate the birth of Christ on the first Friday of Jan. 1000's of people come celebrate the release of the Dove and the Kids diving for the Cross. The one who gets the Cross is said to have good luck for the year. Wonderful Celebration!

Very ornate. My niece and her hubby were married in this church. Reminds me of the churches in Greece. Traditional.

Maybe your diet needs a little inspiration from above. You'll be enchanted by the undisturbed presence of this local pillar of religion and history. It is a magnificent structure. Full of uncomprimising statements of the Greek Orthodox Faith. It is the strong tower of the community and often is used for the milestones of the people here. When available don't be timid to go and explore this beautiful icon of real estate. You'll be inspired.

Take lots of photos. The caretaker was very insightful and knowledgeable. Beautiful and historical. You won't regret stopping by.

How lovely for this cathedral to be open to visitors to Tarpon Springs. We visited late in the afternoon and were greeted by an older Greek gentleman who encouraged us to walk freely throughout the cathedral. The middle aisle is roped off, but the rest of the church is very open to explore, and that is what we did. How nice to be able to quietly and respectfully view another culture up close. The artwork is stunning from floor to ceiling, and wall to wall. The stained glass windows are amazing in the afternoon sun. A few other patrons sat quietly visiting, but otherwise it is a quiet place.

Just mind blowing- the stained glass will take your breath away. Paintings were amazing, on the ceiling & walls. The energy of this church is profound. Just sitting in a pew, quietly, is transformative. There is a sweet little gift store worth checking out too. I just loved it. Really worth seeing.

The interior of the church is beautiful and a shrine to the faith. The dome, icons and stained glass windows along with the copper dome are all gorgeous.

I was a member of this church as a child and even participated in the annual Epiphany Dive on January 6th so St. Nicholas brings back many fond memories. The church is a landmark worth visiting in Tarpon Springs. I recommend a tour. The church has many beautiful hand painted icons and incredible stain glass work.

Beautiful cathedral with so much rich history. Absolutely amazing inside. Worth the time to check it out.

It's about 1.5 miles from the general Tarpon Springs sponge docks area but well worth the walk/ride. No one was there to give us a tour but we took in the splendor of the gorgeous crystal chandeliers, vivid stained glass windows and poignant frescoes on our own. Holy water and candles available for sale at the entrance. Light a candle and say a prayer for someone dear to you.

I disagree with the other reviewer. Doors are always open! It's beautiful! Everytime we have guests from up north, we bring them to the cathedral and the doors are always open. I've lived in Tarpon Springs for 17 years. Please visit -- you'll enjoy it.

A great place to visit. The staff was very knowledgeable about the history of the church. Enjoyable afternoon visit.

You can walk to this Greek church from the sponge docks, about .6 miles. The church is open to the public. It is beautiful inside with dome ceiling, stained glass, beautiful marble and paintings. There was a caretaker that answered any questions. Worth the visit.

I didn't go inside the cathedral, but the structure of the building is interesting and lovely. There is a nice plaza outside with benches. A glorious monument to our Creator God!

My sister got married here years ago and it's s beautiful church to be in. The walls are stunning and it's very large. Beautiful place to see

The Greek Heritage is strong in Tarpon Springs and this cathedral is at the heart of it. Every January 6th on the Epiphany the traditional Greek Cross Dive at the nearby Spring Bayou is held after the religious service at the church. The church is decorated with religious icons and stunning stained glass windows. There is even a miraculous weeping icon of St, Nicholas at the entrance of the church!

This is a rather small church, but it is breathtakingly beautiful inside. Murals, stained glass windows, chandeliers, and more. Candles burning and original wood pews add to the beauty. I recommend a trip to see this place of worship.

This cathedral was only a short walk from the tourist area and it was worth taking a look in. Very beautiful and ornate.

My wife is Greek Orthodox so we had to stop in to light candles. The dome over the altar is fabulous as are the stained glass windows. Be certain to visit the book store/gift shop which is located in another building behind the church adjacent to the main parking lot.

This is a nice example of a Greek church with icons and all.
It is worth a few minutes of your time to walk the aisles and if you wish say a prayer in a nice surrounding.

We walked here from the Sponge Docks and were glad we did. Beautiful cathedral-lots to take in. Good information in the foyer before entering the sanctuary. Much prettier inside than the outside of the building suggests.

I always love to have the chance to see lovely, well cared for places of worship. This church is a wonderful example of a caring and devout congregation. Very nicely adorned.

St. Nicholas Greek Cathedral is a must see during a Tarpon Spring visit. The church is packed with beautiful art, including frescoes and stained glass windows. It is a great place to stop for prayer and meditation.

What an amazingly beautiful Church!
You could see that the folks that contribute to build this church had our Lord in mind. No details were overlooked. I doubt that the church like this could be billed today.
Well worth your time

The Cathedral is the centerpiece of the Greek community in Tarpon Springs and involved in celebrating Palm Sunday and Easter and other seasonal religious events. The congregation takes pride in preserving and sharing Greek culture be it dance or music or foods. The stained glass windows and icons are a must see.

This is a very beautiful church and definitely just fitting for how beautiful Tarpon Springs is. This is not a tourist attraction. The church us just so beautiful good place to just come and meditate and feel the spirituality.

We thoroughly enjoyed seeing St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral. The church is magnificent and the stained glass windows are stunning. It is difficult to take it all in. We certainly felt the spirit of the many icons. We didn't have time to call for a guided tour, but fortunately there was a knowledgeable woman there who was happy to answer questions both about the Greek Orthodox religion and the building itself. It is beautiful.

This was my first time visiting a Greek Orthodox Cathedral and I was amazed. The icons are beautiful and the sense of holiness in the Cathedral was prevalent. The nice lady that welcomed us upon entering the Cathedral was very informative of the history of the Cathedral as well as the Greek Orthodox faith.

Attractive building that is worth seeing. Nice windows. You can attend one of the masses but I find that I don't do well with the incense.

This is a beautiful cathedral. You can have a tour or just go in and enjoy the art on your own. If you want to avoid the crowds on Dodecanese take a side trip here.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral is a bit of calm and peace in the midst of the busy tourist scene of the sponge docks and shops in Tarpon Springs. Using money earned by Greek immigrant sponge divers, it was built to resemble Constantinople's famous Sancta Sophia. Although the cathedral is built on a much smaller scale, St. Nicholas' icons, stained glass windows, and dome are breathtakingly beautiful. My husband and I are not of the Orthodox faith, but the cathedral inspired a worshipful hush and reverence as soon as we entered the main door. We also visited the book store nearby and spoke with a very friendly and knowledgable sales woman who not only knew about the Orthodox faith but also provided us with valuable ideas as to what else to do and see in Tarpon Springs. As she advised and we heartily agreed, the book shop offers a unique selection of books on faith as well as a stunning and reasonably priced selection of icons that a tourist will not find on busy Dodecanese Boulevard. She was absolutely right. We left with an small, delicate triptych of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child lovingly touching her face, flanked by the archangel Michael on one side and the archangel Gabriel on the other, and an awesome CD of choral masterworks from the Russian Orthodox Church with works by such composers as Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky. So, if you are looking for some peace and quiet in Tarpon Springs and maybe want to get in touch your spiritual side, check out this beautiful cathedral and book store. You will feel blessed.

If you have never visitedd a Greek orthodox Church , this is the one to visit. Not long ago this Church made the headlines because the icon of the Pananyia, the Mother of Christ was shedding tears. Many people visited. Many believed Tarpon Springs was spared being hit by hurricaines because of Holy Mary's tears. it was if she were present and protection the church.
When you walk into the Church you will see beautiful icons, stained glass portraits of St George slaying the Dragon, and the Archangels . The divine litergy is in Greek and English. The original bible as written in Greek. The Greek Orthodox faith believes it has preserved the bible in it;s purest form.

Our final stop after a day in Tarpon Springs. If you enjoy churches you need to stop here. Very beautiful inside. The curator spent time with us explaining several of the features. Definitely would stop here over and over!

I am sitting outside the church at 2:15 PM and even called in and spoke to receptionist asking if I can take a quick tour as I am leaving town tomorrow ..she said no -only open from 11 to 2 or 3! please call before you make the trip -what a disappointment!

The church was not open but just from the beautiful stained glass we could see from the outside I can just picture how it looks inside. Took some "postcard" shots outside.

The church is amazing. If you have the opportunity to visit Tarpon Springs I highly recommend that you stop by and cost the church.

A lovely Greek Orthodox church in Tarpon Springs. Beautiful icons and paintings. Was thankful to be there during Holy Week for a stop to light a candle.

Visited during Orthodox Holy Week. Impressive church and the parishioners were so nice and welcoming, offering in-depth explanations of their religious traditions.

This church is so very beautiful, the paintings, sculptures, and the icons are all amazing! The history behind Tarpon Springs, the Greeks and the Greek Orthodox Church is as colorful and amazing as this Cathedral. There is beautiful paintings and carvings throughout the Cathedral from top to bottom. Everythime I go I always see something different, and I am always in awe.

Please note there are two doors to this cathedral. The first doors we tried were locked, and we thought that perhaps it was closed, as we peered in the window and it was very dark. It turned out that there was another door that was open, one that faces North Pinellas Avenue.
St. Nicholas Cathedral is well-worth a stop if you enjoy church architecture, religious paintings and beautiful stained glass. You also really get a sense of the Greek history of Tarpon Springs there. Donations can be placed in a box in the front of the church and you may also purchase candles or holy cards.

Prettt church on the outside. Spectacular inside. Gorgeous stained glass windows from the 1940's. Paintings on the ceiling and walls is awesome. Everything is in Greek so you cant understand it and no one is there to help. If you look long enough you can pick out parts of some stories in the bible in the paintings and decorations. Lots of candles and a great feeling.

This church is absolutely Gorgeous and worth a visit to just appreciate the architecture, if you cant make a service.

While this is not in the tourist district, it is the best thing we saw in Tarpon Springs. Well worth a stop. Lovely stained glass and architecture.

If your an out of towner, you need to get to St. Nickolas Greek Orthodox church. It has been a place of worship even when i moved into town back in the 1970's . You need to see it. Don't miss out. Jesus loves Us.

Have been many time over the years a lovely peaceful place with a ton of history

Beautiful, traditional, cultural visit. By all means take the time to walk through this facility. It is ripe with Greek tradition and religious icons. Very well worth the visit.

We came in to check out the local architecture before it started the normal Florida afternoon thunderstorm. Wonderful works of art. Don't miss out and take the time to look at all the lovely sights.

Well worth the time to stop and go inside. There is usually a volunteer to answer questions and share some of the lore. This is a beautiful greek othodox church.

I was amazed that Tarpon Springs would have such an ornate cathedral, which is a replica of a famous Greek Orthodox cathedral in Turkey. It's worth a visit. When I went (on a Thursday morning) there was an elderly gentleman quietly at the door but no tours.

This Neo-Byzantine architectural style Greek Orthodox cathedral is TripAdvisor reviewer #1 rated Tarpon Springs attraction, for good reason. It is the center of Tarpon Springs Greek culture. St. Nicholas hosts an annual Epiphany celebration each January 6, when Greek Orthodox boys aged 16–18 dive into Spring Bayou to retrieve a white wooden cross, said to bring good luck to the finder. It is the Western Hemisphere’s largest such event. A statue of an epiphany diver is in front of the church.
The domed main building was completed in 1943 modeled in part on Hagia Sophia (an astounding architectural marvel originally constructed 1,500 years ago as a Christian basilica) in Istanbul, which features Byzantine and Gothic Revival architectural styles. The 23 stained glass windows adorning the dome like a crown depict episodes in the life of Jesus and the saints. The dome’s three enormous chandeliers were imported from what was Czechoslovakia. The incomparable 60-ton altar is made of Pentelic marble imported from Greece, and was part of a Greek exhibit in the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Mount Pentelicus or Pentelikon (Greek: Πεντέλη, Πεντελικόν or Πεντελικό Όρος) is a mountain situated between Athens and Marathon.
The cathedral was closed when I visited in early June. Viewing Internet photos of the interior caused me to plan another tour of Tarpon Springs next year. There are, however, many interesting features surrounding the structures. A member of the congregation imparted much information about the history of this magnificent cathedral.

Peaceful, gorgeous, awesome, architect, paintings & Spritual! Light a candle and let your prayers go up to heaven with your belief of healing, mentally and physical.

This morning we went first time to the liturgy of Christmas.Quiet nice atmosphere to go for the ceremony with parking space also

A very pretty church just outside of downtown area. Lots of stained glass. Great basilica with a depiction of God at the top. Wonder around and look at all of the murals and windows.

I t will always be a part of me. Our whole life revolved around St. Nicholas My Dad was a great benefactor of our grest St. Nicholas. So proud.

I was visiting Tarpon Springs with friends. The owner of the B&B we were staying at recommended visiting the church. We stopped in on the way to the sponge docks. We were so glad we did. What a magnificent structure! You are allowed to walk in at any time during the day. We wished we had arranged for a tour and hope to do that soon.

This Cathedral is a gorgeous building with beautiful stain glass, The architecture glorifies God to the fullest.

Wanted to get some pictures of this historic Greek church. People were super nice and I got to take my time and self-tour and take a lot of pictures. Beautiful!

This place is absolutely beautiful! Take a few minutes to walk inside and admire the artwork and soak in the history. Many thanks to Dale for taking the time to speak with us and answer questions.

Historic and an amazing landmark in faith and structure. Great time to visit is around Greek Orthodox Easter and Epiphany

Don't make a destination out of it, but if you are nearby and want a break from the bustling street by the sponge docks, this is a nice place. You can spend about 10 mins there, it's not very large.
We walked here from the docks, but it was not a very pleasant walk, just residential streets with mostly ugly houses, took us about 20 mins each way.

I visited the church during Epiphany this year. It is an awesome site and is kept in immaculate condition.

We were hoping to spend time looking at the church and the beautiful stained glass windows, but a wedding was about to begin. We went in for a quick stop and the formally clad wedding guests were very gracious to not be offended by our tennis shoes and tshirts.
It is a gorgeous church and well-worth your time.

Very beautiful church with interesting memorials outside in the plaza by the church. This is not set up for tourists--you are visiting a working church with a large local congregation. But very worth the visit.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral is a beautiful church filled with many Orthodox icons and rich in tradition.
It's a must see for anyone visiting Tatpon Springs.

So beautiful. Steeped in history. Very friendly members. Walking distance to many nice shops and restaurants.

we were lucky last time to have encountered a man who was part of the church who gave us much time and information regarding the church itself and the community, must visit once if in the area especially if of greek descent

We found this church while visiting the city. We were able to visit it since there was no service. What an amazing, beautiful church that is rich in tradition and history. Thankful to see it!

If you are in Tarpon Springs stop off and visit the Cathedral it is quite beautiful.Side doors may be locked-enter from the main street.

Very rich in tradition, nice icons. We visited when a children was baptized which was very interesting.

It won't take long, but stop to visit the St. Nicolas Cathedral. It's just beautiful, and it's moving to think of all the years of prayers wafting up to it's domed roof.

For over 100 years the Greek community celebrates The Epiphany with the throwing of the cross at Spring Bayou.
Over 20,000 people annually come to witness this celebration as young Greek men dive into the chili waters to retrieve the blessed cross. Celebrations abound with Greek food, street dancing, and Festivities

I was really impressed by the beauty of the inside of this church. It is full of beautiful stained glass windows, and many gold and silver icons along the walls, and decorated painted ceilings with many religious scenes. We visited in the afternoon, after spending a wonderful day at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks. We were the only visitors there. I highly recommend visiting this Cathedral on your way out of town. We parked easily along a street in back of the church for free.

The Cathedral is a land mark in Tarpon Springs. I remember when my parent's would come to Tarpon every summer we staied with family near the Church and as a chiled I would be amazed at it's beautie and size. They have the service for Aphionie when the boy's would dive for the cross every Year in January.

We walked in on a week day and were welcomed in to take a look at this gorgeous church. The marble, stained glass, religious icons.... it was fabulous!

A little out of town but easy to find and very pretty church. Typical white interior of Greek churches and beautiful stained glass windows.

The church was built in 1943. Take time to see the sun coming through the beautiful stained-glass windows. We were fortunate to have a member of the church there when we visited to answer any questions we had. Take time , stop and relax!.

Having witnessed our daughters wedding in a spectacularly beautiful Greek Cathedral, we were anxious to visit here & were not dissppointed.
Gorgeous stain glass windows and meticulously painted ceilings.
A beautiful & ornate church.

When visiting Tarpon the heart and soul of the community is the cathedral. This is the largest Greek community in the Western Hemisphere of the world and it was brought together in the 1920s by the establishment of the church. The beautiful stained glass and painted ceilings are any history and art lovers joy.

Well worth the few minutes to walk through this beautiful building. Well maintained, excellent architecture and stained glass. You don't have to stop in for religious purpose - just stop to enjoy the quality architecture - beautiful space.

St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral it is one of the best in the area for all the community in our area. I was able to go there for 20 miles from home but now I am not able to travel.

Stunning cathedral, with impressive stained glass and frescos. The church is open most days. I could hear a couple voices behind the altar but there was no one there to speak with during my visit. Being Serbian Orthodox, I would have loved to be able to chat with someone, but I was still very happy just to be able to see this beautiful cathedral.

Live here 20 years, will not move I love the town and it's history. Now that I am retired I go to the ceremony of the Epiphany beautiful traditions in the town of sponges.

Please everyone take the time to visit this church no matter what your religion is. The inside and outside are so clean. The stain glass windows and the painting on the ceiling what a work of art. It takes your breath away when you first enter. Had the honor to talk to a lady cleaning the church. She was a old member of 33 years. She gave us such in sight to the church a added bonus, Just to sit in the pew something comes over you it is breath taking and not a tourist attraction. Will visit again the next time in the area and hope to be able to attend a service.

The artwork and symbolism inside St. Nicholas is breathtaking. Take a a tour and learn about the widow's section, the archbishop's chair, the reason for the rooster in the sanctuary and the facets of the Greek Orthodox religion.

We were on Memorial Day, and even when the building was closed we took pictures of the great plaza outside. It is truly an amazing place.

Don't dare miss this. I was totally stunned by the beauty of this magnificent place. Don't miss it during your visit to Tarpon Springs.

I am fascinated with church architecture and really enjoyed the time I spent visiting this cathedral. While the style reminded me of other European churches and cathedrals, it was unique and inspired me to do research into the art and architecture. I would definitely recommend a visit.

an experience you will never forget, very friendly atmosphere to be in, beautiful statues, an absolutely beautiful church

We did not make it inside this Cathedral, but enjoyed a rather unique experience related to it: We were in Tarpon Springs on January 6, a discovered, thanks to our B&B hostess, Barb, (Ashley's Victorian Haven) that a very special ceremony takes place on Epiphany: a host of barefoot teenage boys dressed in white T shirts march, along with various Greek Orthodox officials and priests, from the Cathedral, about a kilometer to a body of water called the Spring Bayou, where they all dive into the water to retrieve a wooden cross which has been cast into the water. It is considered an honour for the boy who retrieves the cross. We saw a monument erected after the 2006 Epiphany and all the successful boys' names for each year were listed there.
This year, because of the polar vortex, Tarpon Springs was unseasonably cold, windy and rainy. But somehow those boys all managed to dive in without hesitation!
We suspect the fairly shallow water in this Bayou is warmer that elsewhere because a few days later we saw small Manatees occasionally surfacing right where the boys had plunged from the boats days before. We were told that Manatees regularly winter there in the cooler weather.

Visited the cathedral this afternoon in Tarpon Springs. It is exquisite, ornate, and extremely beautiful. The church is Greek Orthodox and is filled with smells, sounds and sights of another time and place. The stained glass has different scenes from the gospels and is quite lovely. Quiet and filled with the peace of God. It should not be missed.

Its a wonderful, small, Greek Orthodox Cathedral in downtown Tarpon Springs. Beautifully kept with great decorations on the walls. The interior is modeled on Agia Sophia in Istanbul, albeit on a much smaller scale.

If you like to visit churches in general or just want to see an example of a Greek Orthodox Church this is an excellent choice. This church sponsor the "dive for the cross" that take place for Epiphany (January 6th of each year) in Greece and around Greek Orthodox Churches worldwide. Young men dive in very cold water to recover a cross that a Priest throws in the water. The lucky winner get to return the cross to the Priest and receive his congratulations and blessings.

Beautiful cathedral. Take time to visit and maybe find a docent that was as nice as we had. (sorry, I didn't get her name.) They allow visitors daily if there is not a service being done. So pretty, you'll want to have your camera ready. (Pictures allowed.)

Have never actually been inside, but I imagine it's gorgeous. Make sure you snap a pic if you pass by. ;)

This Cathedral is beautiful inside and out...you can visit during the day. Generally there is someone at the door that can answer questions or tell you the history of the church...lovely, peaceful house of God.

Besides the usual tourist things in Tarpon Springs there is a bit of history that deserves a stop. This church, part of the Greek Orthodox tradition is an architectural marvel. Stone from the Greek pavilion at the Worlds Fair adorns the front of the church. Holy relic of Saint Nicholas is on display. If you come at the right time the rector of the church will give you the history of the church and its features. If you are not familiar with churches from the Eastern Roman Empire, this will be a learning experience. Traditions that extend back many hundreds of years are embodied in this religion. When the church in Rome was under attack, Eastern churches survived.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral appears as a latter day miniature Hagia Sophia (Byzantine style architecture). Its somewhat plain yellow brick exterior hides a richly layered interior typical of an older and wealthy Orthodox church.
While several reviewers mentioned the stained glass I was drawn to the rich iconic paintings on the walls and ceilings. Take the time to sit down and study the paintings as they illustrate Old Testament and New Testament individuals, events, and parables. A little preparation on learning some names in Greek would payoff greatly. Like a medieval cathedral this is a visually 'talking' church and there is a lot of layers to offer a patient viewer.
We stumbled upon a service in progress and they seem to be a bit old school in dress code--so if you are not sure you might want to cover up. There is a bookstore in the building behind it with a $3 self tour guide. I'd try to patronize that or through a few $ in the collection box--it looks like an expensive place to maintain. We are coming back.

I grew up near Tarpon springs, even lived there for a while after marrying, but never had a chance to go into the Greek Orthodox church which was one block off of main street. I had occasion to go there recently to attend the memorial services for a friend/high school classmate of mine, Raley Hourdas. I don't believe I have ever been in such a beautiful building, both inside and out. There were so many things inside the building I had questions about, but didn't a chance to ask anyone. I remember even seeing a rooster which represented the rooster that the Bible refers to that was supposed to crow three times when Christ was denied by Peter. I'm not familiar enough with it to state whether there was wheelchair access, bathrooms or questions below. There are steps up to the entrance, the cathedral appears to occupy almost a city block, parking was available in front and behind the building.

Take a step back in time when you visit the St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral...it is quiet, beautiful and there is usually a church member there to tell you the history.

a greek cathedral in florida is indeed a very special place to to see. Just follow the normal guide lines of visiting any church and remember this is an active working church

This lovely church is part of the Tarpon skyline (if you call it that). The building is a strong edifice of fatih and is always busy with weddings and services, especially during the holy days.

Even if you are not a religious person this church is a beautiful place to see and surrounding area is a sight to see too

We come to church here, have our funerals here, beautiful. well kept, classic Greek Church. When you walk in it takes you back 5 centuries with the chanting and Gold Leaf everywhere, truly amazing place.

The St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church is breathtaking! I am not Greek, nor religious, but I can appreciate history and beauty when I see it.
The exterior of the church is beautiful and well kept, but the interior is amazingly maintained. St. Nicholas church has to be one of the most beautiful and clean churches that I have ever been in! This coming from someone whose high school graduation was at the infamous St. Patrick's cathedral in New York City.

my son lives in tarpon springs and always talks of the beauty it has. i had seen it online and had to see its beauty. we went to the byou and had to stop and see this magnificant church. i had read all about i am so happy i got to visit. i lit a candle. the only other church i had ever seen so beautiful was st.patricks cathederal in n.y.. it is a MUST SEE!!!!!!!!!!!! a memory forever.

Beautiful cathedral. Visitors welcome. We were lucky to view service. Nice to see they have services in English and Greek

A very awesome place to visit. The church is a great visit for religious and nonreligious. I would check before going to make sure they are open.

It was locked... At one o'clock a Sunday afternoon ! We have tried every door and I can say that we were very disappointed. We were looking forward to do this activity.

This cathedral was very impressive and you found yourself whispering once inside. The ceiling paintings were simply beautiful, the alter area was designed to lift up the priests and you felt very small, much like in large Catholic churches. The condition of the church was perfect and they say the sponge fishermen came each year to receive a blessing for their safety for the coming harvest. People caring for the building were courteous and friendly.
The exterior of the church becomes the focal point for Tarpon springs as the large dome appears to the visitor well before you see the church. Very impressive from every angle.

One of the nicest forms of Byzantine Architecture in the area. Fabulous painting on walls and ceiling. As with all Greek Orthodox Churches there are no statues. If you are lucky enough to be in the area around Jan. 6th be sure to get their early enough to witness the annual Cross Dive.

The inside architecture with its colorful ceiling and walls was breathtaking. The alters in the front were beautiful. Their use of the color blue reminded me of being in Mykonos, Greece.

This is a gorgeous cathedral. It is a Greek traditional church but the architecture is definitely worth seeing on your visit to Tarpon Springs.

Like most of the other reviewers I also enjoy visiting the beautiful Catholic churches. This church is not Roman Catholic but Greek Orthodox. Everything in the church from the magnificent ICONs to the beautiful stained glass and gorgeous Greek marble has a religious symbolic meaning. If you call prior to visiting you can set up a tour where they explain all the wonderful stories and meanings all tracing back to the Bible. I take friends over there frequently and they are always amazed at the beauty and history in this church. They do have services in Greek and English if you have time to attend a mass. I've been to churches all over the US, Canada etc. and this is one of my favorites.

Don't leave Tarpon Springs until you have visited this beautiful Greek Orthodox Church right in the center of downtown Tarpon Springs. It helps to have some previous knowledge of the orthodox tradition and icons. The symbolism in the church is fabulous. You can't leave this church without being touched by the Spirit!

Beautiful church not far from Sponge Docks. Street parking available. Inside is just stunning. When you are finished, walk through historic downtown, and over to old train station, which is now historical society.

When you arrive in Tarpon Springs and driving on N Pinellas Ave, you are impressed by this structure. The exterior is impressive with the statue of the Boy holding aloft the Cross he retrieved. But if the church is not holding a service, the door is unlocked and you must go inside. The windows are spectacular, it always seems to me that the Saints eyes are looking at me as I move around the room. The marble floor and the alter is impressive. If you choose you may lite a candle and of course you may sit a meditate/and or pray.

the church is worth the visit. stop in and admire the wonderful icons and beauty of this old world style church! You should be dressed appropraitly to show the proper respect. You never know when you might happen upon a greek wedding, or a baptism.

St Nicholas is a beautiful church and temple of God. If youre visiting tarpon, take the time to visit and church. If you appreciate church architecture, art, and religious history, you'' really enjoy this. You'll see in the Greek Orthodox church, some of same traditions faithfully still being done, since the original tabernacle of moses.

A must see when visiting Tarpon Springs, FL. Also known as St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral. The existing building was completed in 1943. The marble in the church is from Greece and there's a weeping icon of St Nicholas inside near the entrance. A beautiful church, don't leave town before stopping to see it.

A beautiful piece of history, art and architecture. A must see if you're visiting Tarpon Springs. Definitely bring a camera the inside is just as beautiful with all the art and stained glass. Right down the road from the bayou where you can see manatees and dolphins.

This is not the largest Cathedral I have ever visited and it is not the most beautiful or elegantly appointed although it is beautiful inside and out. But the locals claim the reason that Tarpon Springs has not be hit by a hurricane is because of the presence of the Cathedral. I am not Greek Orthodox but I certainly would not argue with that. The Cathedral, on January 6th each year, holds a day long Epiphany celebration which apparently thousands attend with one of the high lights being the dive for the Cross in nearby Spring Bayou. I think I will try to join in the celebration next year. Regardless you will enjoy this Cathedral.

I live in Tarpon Springs for 25 years, born and raised in Manhattan NYC. I love this town and will not move, beautiful culture and the people are a joy to meet. I love the history of the sponges you are able to buy from The Gulf Of Mexico. The church is so beautiful inside, I attended a christining.

We stopped by this church while in Tarpon Springs. The church is fairly plain on the outside, but is ornate, colorful, and the church relics and stained glass are fantastic. A must see in Tarpon Springs.

A must visit. The inside is absolutely stunning. Everything is so well taken care of. So interesting to learn about this place of worship.

This is a really beautiful church. Have to see in inside to appreciate it. We just stopped by to see it... Doors open.

Rich in history and culture built in 1943 more beautiful on the inside than out. Check hours before visiting. Printed flyer in foyer with detailed history.

Enjoyed our visit!! The interior is beautiful! Lady cleaning the pews was very nice and informative!! Would definitely recommend a visit if in the area!

Whether you are religious or not, the cathedral is a must see while in Tarpon Springs.
Beautiful artwork, icons, candles, windows, flowers.
Greek Orthodox is quite different than what I, and probably most people, are familiar with.
I found it fascinating! And quite stunning!

We could not believe how beautiful the inside of the church was. Your first look inside the door is just breathtaking. We walked around thru it and admired the stained glass windows and the altar. Would love to come back and attend a church service there. Just a fyi they do close at 5.It is worth the time to stop here.

how can you not give this 5 stars? beautiful inside and out, respectable parishioners, beautiful mass (love that they walk around at one point), easy parking, be sure to make contribution, light a candle, $ into basket
and don't forget to go to the sponge dock area 5 minutes away

We have visited this Cathedral every time we visit Tarpon Springs, usually at least one time each year. We have been there when there hasn't been a service, so we have walked around looking at all the hand carved pieces and enjoyed the architecture. It is located just before you enter the busy area of Tarpon Springs, where all the shops and restaurants are located.

This was a beautiful church with a really interesting history. Well worth the time. Gave me a better understanding of the local population.

If you are in the area and the cathedral is open is worth stopping to see. Beautiful inside and enjoyed our walk through, especially with it being around Christmas time.

This church is beautiful. They have an event on the epiphany.where a cross is thrown into Spring Bayou by the priest and many of the teenage Greek members of the church dive in to retrieve it. Who ever brings it up is blessed by the priest to have a year of much blessings.

This church is well worth your time to visit. It is very ornate with large beautiful stained glass windows. The ceiling are even painted. It even has an artifact of St Nicholas. Take time and sit down and look at it and the ceiling.

The artwork in this church is amazing. Alot of history to the church and you can spend hours just viewing the interior. There was a gentleman there that told us alot about the church and about the work which has been completed...Definately worth the stop.

We were in town just to visit the sponge dock area and eat some Greek food. Decided to stop and take a peek. What a gorgeous church. Amazing Stain glass and wood work.

The outside was nice. But when you enter the doors of this Cathedral, you are transported to another time and place. The Artwork, the Icons, Murals, and Stain Glass Windows made me feel as though I was visiting one of the great Cathedrals of Europe. This experience surrounded me in beauty and spirituality. You might be sightseeing the natural and rustic beauty of Tarpon Springs in shorts and a tee shirt. But don't let that stop you from being immersed in this old world treasure.

A must see when visiting Tarpon Springs, along with the entire historic district and St. Michaels Shrine. The sponge docks are beautiful and educational as well.

This relatively tiny marble work of art is a must-see site in the Greek section of Tarpon Springs (near the Sponge Docks). Unfortunately, although the church was open for an upcoming wedding, there was no one present to answer our many questions. I am only slightly familiar with the furnishings of an orthodox church, but the icons were positively ravishing. There were relics of St. Nicholas and personal icons in a special chapel. Of course, we could not enter the sanctuary area sealed off by the iconostasis, but we marveled at all the furnishings and artwork.

This is a nice place to visit, full of history and the building is beautiful inside and is free with free parking

The St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral is a great church with alot of history. The church welcomes people from out of town.

A must see. Ben coming to Tarpon for 30 years and never went in. However, this year a couple was staying with us who were raised in the Greek Orthodox religion so we went in. It was gorgeous. The couple had been to Greece and said that this church was the prettiest that have been in. While inside sitting in the pews our friend said hello in geek to a staff member named Dale. He responded and came over and gave us insight on the church it’s rituals, events and recommendations of where to find good Greek food. We probably spent more than an hour inside in amazement and solitude reflecting on Christ.

The facility manager, I believe name was Nick or Mike, was excellent. He gave information in an interesting way and answered all our questions.

St. Nicholas is a beautiful church that is only 2 minutes away from the main tourist area. You can stay and linger as long as the church is open but if you have limited time a walk through is doable in under 30 minutes. It has an old world feel and the stained glass is not to be missed. The kids loved looking at the different icons.

This is a holy place full of history and beauty. The stained glass windows are incredible. We were met by a church employee and historian who gave us a tour of the interior and the history of the church. Very nice, worth the time. You might call to arrange a visit.

St. Nicholas is a beautiful very European feeling cathdral. The Greek community in Tarpon Springs should be very proud of their church.

Having been in several Greek Orthodox Cathedrals in Greece, we found this church to be outstanding. Spent about 40 minutes there, mostly in conversation with one of the caretakers. Very knowledgeable. YMMV.
Beautifully decorated as most Greek Orthodox churches. Worth a stop if you're in Tarpon Springs.

When we entered the church in late afternoon we could have easily been walking into a church in Greece. Two older ladies were seated in the back pew enjoying a chat in Greek. We quietly walked through the church after a brief welcome from the ladies, enjoying the light streaming in through the stained glass windows. As we reached the altar area we looked up to see a spectacular painted mural on the ceiling.
We truly felt as though we were transported to another place.
Well worth the visit.

Was a fantastic building in the Greek Orthodox style. Unfortunately when we were there it was closed but having seen others i would assume worth a visit when open to see the inside.

Such incredible architecture. The beauty and upkeep of this beautiful place reminded me how small I am in the grand scheme of things, but in a good way. Even children should be speechless.

i've always stopped by on a sunday while growing up when my parents took my sisters and I on vacation. lots of memories and so pretty.
well maintained

Definitely worth a quick detour into here. So peaceful and nice to get away for 10 minutes. Also it is a really beautiful looking building inside.

The temple is not a monument of the past (finished in 1943) but is a nice example of Greek church. We liked both exterior and interior of the temple

We are not of the christian faith, but are very impressed

Each time I go to Tarpon Springs I revisit this beautiful church, it is so special, everywhere you look, it is a spiritual delight. I love to pray here but the artistic view alone is worth going for. I recommend this to the spiritual and artistic eye. Easy to park, next to the Church. This church is a treasure!

Loved the Greek Festival, the food, the people, the church and its history.

This Church is amazing. The icons, the murals and the glass windows. It is a spiritual place. You can find peace here among the chaotic thrall of the nearby Sponge Docks. It is a national treasure. It has to be seen to know it's true beauty.

We visited Tarpon Springs Florida the other day with the intention of eating an Authentic Greek Meal. Friends had recommended the restaurant "Mykonos" and the sponge docks too. I always check out an area I'm going to visit for any "not to miss" interesting things. St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church caught my attention. From the outside you can see the unmistakable shape of the traditional dome. It was raining so we scurried inside. We lit candles, said prayers for our families, and then had the sanctuary to ourselves to enjoy. We wandered around with our necks craned, looking upwards in awe. The stained glass windows are really beautiful, and there are many, especially the ones way up in the dome. However, what makes this church special are the beautifully painted murals with the vivid colors. I imagine worshiping here would be very special.

You need to Visit St, Nicholas Greek orthodox Church, its a memory that you'll remember forever. This Greek Community and church Rocks. They do so much for the community. I love worshipping there. You will too.

A relatively modern church, built in the 40's, the artwork on the walls and ceilings were wonderful. Their giftshop sells the most wonderful icons!

Put this on your list of places. The architecture and splendid interior of this cathedral is a must see.

Right in the heart of Tarpon Springs. Great grandson was baptized here with a beautiful ceremony.

Suppose to be a replica of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. Wandered in following Sunday services and was struck by the beauty.

What a beautiful cathedral! The iconography is quite unique. There were many details I'd never encountered in an Orthodox Church. Luckily, Dale was on the premises and answered all our many questions! Can't wait to visit for liturgy.

We only walked around the outside but it was very interesting to see all the stained glass windows. Also had fun trying to read the sign in Greek. Looks very similar to what I remember from 30 years ago.

Very breathtaking view inside. We sat in silence & tried to take in all the wonderful beauty. However, our serene experience was disrupted by a noisy vacuum in the background - all we could do is laugh.

This Greek Cathedral should be a stop you make when in Tarpon Spring. It is a very moving experience. You can feel the hand of god here. Don't past it up. Its a moving experience.

Didn't get to go inside but it was still well worth seeing - it looks more greek than anything else in the area - beautiful design

We walked over to the cathedral midday during our visit to Tarpon Springs. The peace and beauty of the cathedral was a lovely break from the bustle of activity along the sponge docks. The stained glass windows are so beautiful. You may want to check their hours if you plan to visit. We were going to stop at the cathedral on our way out of town, but discovered the cathedral would have been closed by then. Hence, the midday visit which actually turned out to be ideal.

Beautiful architecture. Plenty of stained glass and many old icons. Peaceful way to spend an hour or so. No need to be Greek or religious to enjoy the beauty of this church.

Very beautiful. Awe inspiring. If you love stained glass. The artwork is so well done. There's everything you could imagine. Columns, paintings, stained glass images...

The best time to visiot this lovely Greek Orthodox church is during the holidays. The statue shows the close ties the church has to the development of America's first sponge diving community.
If you have never been inside an Orthodox church, please go in if it is open. The sponge industry is gone, but not the faith of the town's Greek pioneers.

I had wanted to go to Florida and the Greek section of Tarpon Springs for many years. Shamefully, I discovered Westjet flies into Orlando seasonally and so I finally I booked our first two week vacation to the States- usually we only go for one. After one week doing Disney and Orlando we drove to other cities, Tampa, Clearwater, etc. and of course Tarpon Springs. When I entered the beautiful St. Nicholas Cathedral I got very emotional - one of my dreams of visiting here was coming true. It is breathtaking and one of the main tourist attractions of little Sponge Dock Central, Tarpon Springs. Afterward, we went downstairs for coffee and dessert provided by their chapter of the Philoptochos Society. All in all, a spiritual experience. I noticed they have another hall a few blocks away for weddings, Easter, special occasions. Easter time seems to be magical, I am sure.

Stopped into the church to see the beautiful icons in the church. Lit a candle for peace and admired all the beautiful architecture in the church.

Beautiful cathedral with great history and charm.
Friendly staff a must see if you are visiting Tarpon Springs.

My brother and I visited here one day when it was open during the week. We'd driven past it for many years so jumped at the chance to see the inside. I've since been back for the Epiphany Service - packed!! Standing room only. The service was broadcast outside. Happy to have had a chance to participate .

This church is well worth the time to stop and visit. There is very little that can compare to an Orthodox Church's icons.

Really nice hour or so diversion. Just a block off the downtown area. Gorgeous artwork. I had three eleven year olds with me and they found it awe inspiring.

I have visited St. Nicholas cathedral many times as I'm Greek Orthodox and it is my church I go every Sunday with my family. I was married in 1986 at St. Nicholas and my 2 children were baptized in the church. Even if you aren't Orthodox, you owe it to yourself to visit this church to see all the beautiful paintings that this church has. It was renovated about 10 years ago and is stunning. It's wonderful to sit in the front pews and admire all the incredible sights. I'm sure if you call the office, a tour can be arranged. Please dress appropriately as this is a very old fashioned church and please show respect when entering.

I visited the cathedral during the Greek Easter and it was really a feel good experience. Beautiful decorated and a really warm atmosphere. Felt like being in Greece.

We stopped at this church as we were exploring Tarpon Springs and this stop was very interesting. The people in the church were welcoming and that was very nice.

My husband and I recently made a side trip to Tarpon Springs while visiting the Clearwater area. It was definitely worth it! The dome of St. Nicholas is visible well before reaching the town center. The cathedral is striking from the outside, but the inside is gorgous. Hand-painted frescos adorn the ceiling and walls, mosaics decorate the floor, and the stained glass windows and statues pay homage to Greek Orthodox saints. There are a number of iconsm, of which the icon of St. Nicholas is particularly well known. Highly recommend for anyone with an interest in religion or church history.

This Cathedral was absolutely beautiful and glad that we took the time to visit. The stain glass windows were remarkable and the history behind the Cathedral was worth the visit, as well.

The Church is just beautiful. It's very calming and lovely. I live in Tarpon Springs and I enjoy many of the yearly activities that are sponsored by St. NIcholas. The Epiphany cross diving celebration is the biggest event they sponsor. I highly recommend visiting the church.

Serene and artistic beauty. "Takes" you to Greece, don't miss it if you get to Tarpen Springs

I love the architecture and paintings in the church. It is most beautiful and historical preservation of Greek history.

We were able to just walk in and look around at all the beautiful architecture and stain glass windows! worth a look!

Take the time to take in the beauty of St. Nickolas Church. We were lucky and found a member who explained some keys about the Orthodox religion. The Church is easy to find and we were very welcome to visit.

The Spirit of The Lord dwells within this sanctuary!!! Come and relax in a pew...behold the glorious stain glass windows with their rich deep colors! Behold the sunlight dancing in the colors, that illuminate through out the sanctuary. The history is deeply intertwined with the Greek families of the area. The Greeks take so much pride in their heritage, culture and willing share their lives with non Greek's, that you can not help but feel the genuine love and openness. Their is an English service and a traditional Greek service each Sunday. If you are ever in the area of Tarpon Springs (north of Tampa 20-30 minutes) please stop in a visit this unique town.

This church is within walking distance of the Tarpon Chamber of Commerce. I didn't get a tour (next time!) and there was no one around when I was there so I did a quick walk though. The stained glass windows were beautiful! It was very serene and calming.

If you can get a docent tour, it'll be worth your time. If not, it's still a pretty place to visit and worship. Church often has special events so you may not be able to visit so call ahead.

This a beautiful Byzantine church with many stained glass windows and icons painted on the walls. Unusual and worth the visit.

Contrary to what was previously posted, the cathedral is almost always open. There have been times when the doors were indeed locked...but they were locked for a good reason. The cathedral had a few incidents of electrical problems that resulted in (thankfully) small fires that were quickly put out before any real damage could mar the beautiful interior. Since then the restoration has been done, electrical issues addressed and the doors are open and the public welcome .

The paintings and statues in this cathedral were beautiful. Typical Greek style, but well worth stopping for a peak.

It almost feels like a step into the past when you visit the Greek Cathedral. From the stain glass art on the windows to the amazing painted ceilings, all people can appreciate the talent and craftsmanship that went into this church. A must see when in Tarpon Springs

Beautiful, old world church. If you are visiting Tarpon Springs, it is worth walking into the church to see it.

Of course, the building is beautiful, overwhelming if you are a worshiper of Christ. We were able to be there for the Saturday evening prayer, which my wife and I both appreciated.

It had been recommended by a friend to be sure and tour the church if possible. We are so glad we did. The church was so beautiful plus peaceful and serene inside. Would highly recommend it.

Just walk through the doors of this Byzantine Revival architecture Church and be wowed. It is beautiful.

Very rare sight. This old cathedral has great history. Cannot take pictures inside. But you can take pictures outside.

A nice, big western style greek orthodox church with very strong influences from the venetian churches. Do not look for byzantine character here since all the icons are Michael Angelo style. The have 2 services every Sunday with the first one being in all greek.

My grandfather was one of the Sponge Boat captains who gave 10% of the catch for several years to build St. Nicholas. It is a beautiful church with a dome modeled on the dome of Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. The iconography is well done and for someone who has never traveled to Europe, a must see.

We always visit local churches when visiting new areas and this one was especially worthwhile. Although fairly plain and somewhat modern looking from the outside, the inside is gorgeous. The stained glass alone is worth the visit. Talked to a couple parishioners in the adjacent bookstore and they were very gracious and informative.

The outside appearance of St Nicholas will never give you an idea of the impressive interior. The stain glass windows, the wall paintings, the iconography and the simple but beautiful design, make this cathedral well worth it to visit.

Beautiful Cathedral and very spiritual. Peaceful and well worth the stop. The paintings, sculptures, architecture, and stained class are phenomenal. Very pleasant and informative staff, easy parking and near to everything else in Tarpon Springs,

The church is absolutely beautiful!! We spent about 30 minutes here. The church is open 9a-3pm for visitors. There was a nice lady sitting just inside to welcome us and answered our questions. There is a box for donations available. You are allowed to take pictures and it is breathtaking! Beautiful stained glass windows depicting the life of Christ, marble alter, chandeliers, etc. It is absolutely exquisite!! Definitely worth a stop if you are in Tarpon Springs!!

Great exerience for Orthodox people in the SE US on epiphany combined with the throwing of the cross in the sponge docks makes a nice trip to Tarpon.

It is wonderful to know we have such a place in FL. The awesomeness and beauty is inspirational. A must see in the area. To realize the families who attend invest in such an awesome place. The upkeep is impecable. WTG Tarpon Springs Greek community. It's free but I suggest a donation.

This church is a must see on your visit to Tarpon Springs. The paintings are very pretty, and the church is quite beautiful on the inside!

I have been to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral several times. It is an absolute beautiful church. It is located in Tarpon Springs, FL. Every year, the church hosts an annual epiphany celebration on January 6 in which Greek Orthodox boys aged 16 to 18 dive into Spring Bayou to retrieve a cross.

I loved this unusual Greek Orthodox Church which you will see as you drive towards the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs. The brick-built exterior has a traditional dome and a tall tower. In the forecourt there is a statue of a boy diving for the cross (a local tradition held in Tarpon Springs each Epiphany).
The church is said to be modelled on that of St Sophia of Istanbul, one of the most beautiful churches in the world. Inside St Nicholas Church at Tarpon Springs the stained glass, gold-topped columns and painted murals were just jaw-dropping. The beautiful colors and fantastically high standard of workmanship were wonderful to admire.
I wish there had been a leaflet or self-guided tour to enhance the visit, but all-in-all it is a great place to visit and admire.

This cathedral has the most amazingly beautiful decoration and painting I've ever seen . Certainly up to European standards and beyond. Well worth a visit.

A must see if visiting Tarpon Springs. Beautiful architecture. Serene atmosphere. It was awe inspring.

I have been wanting to stop by here for 6 months and when I did today, I wished I had earlier. Truly beautiful! I have never been in a Greek Orthodox Cathedral before and it was breathtaking. Be sure to read about the portrait of St. Nicholas.

I was lucky enough to get a chance to come into this church and I was amazed at how beautiful it was. I am NOT Greek Orthodox but a church is a beautiful place and I love going to different churches to see their windows. as we were leaving they were setting up for a wedding so we kept watching and it was beautiful how they had it set up. Tarpon Springs is lucky to have this church in their town

The first time I went the church was closed so I made an effort to come again a few days later while it was open. I am sure glad I did. The interior is stunning and must be seen. Not many churches here in Canada that compare, if any at all. The next time I am in the area I will make sure to visit again. Especially since St. Nicholas is my Patron Saint.

When you want to see tradition, history, and beauty, all in a quiet atmosphere, visit this iconic church in tarpon springs.I remember seeing it in the 50s and had occasion to visit for a friend's funeral.I had forgotten how dignified and beautiful everything in the building is.

The Cathedral was open to the public so we were able to wander around and take pictures. It is so very beautiful and worth visiting!

We had gone there several weeks ago and first visited their book store on a Tuesday. The man there asked us where were we from and we told him the Indianapolis area. He informed us that the Father their was originally from Indy. I told him that our priest from Indy moved to Clearwater 25 years ago...to which he added, yes, then he retired and came here!!! It was great to see Father James again after 25 years. He had babtised both my oldest sons in Indy. We went to the Wednesday evening Theotokos service and my fiancee, a catholic girl, enjoyed the beauty and friendliness greatly!

I had read about the cathedral and never had a chance to visit until recently. My wife and I were heading to Tarpon Springs and stopped-in to see the beautifully painted ceilings and exquisite stained glass. We were not disappointed. It was as if this European cathedral magically appeared in Tarpon Springs just sop we could all marvel at it's beauty.
When we return to the town, we'll definitely stop back since it's worth another visit to see what we may have missed the first time.

This cathedral has lovely glass and icons with GOD The Father reigning from the top of the ceiling. A visit here is worth the trip to Tarpon Springs.

This Greek Orthodox Cathedral does not look special from the outside, but it is on the inside. The color of the paintings and the stained glass is beautiful and brilliant. No, it isn't on the scale of an Italian Renaissance Church, but the vividness of the artwork and quality of the pews, pulpit, screen in front of the alter and other religious fixtures is well worth viewing and contemplating.

This is a gorgeous church - rivals the churches in Europe or anywhere. Don't miss this opportunity to spend some time inside - appreciate the beautiful artists and craftsmen techniques in all directions. You can tell this was built with loving care.

This lovely cathedral is well worth taking the time to visit. While not large, it is meticulously and beautifully decorated with icons and paintings.

Wonderful place to spend some reflective time....very quiet and full of wonder. A must see for sure......Check it out.

This place was closed but the cleaning person allowed us to go in and look around. It was fantastic. It was very reminiscent of the older churches you see in Europe. I would highly recommend reading about the church then coming here. The statue out front to the church itself.

A magnificent christian orthodox cathedral blessed with a large congregation. Father Athanasios very approachable his clever sermons so insightful. I am visiting from Auckland New Zealand the liturgy was a highlight with Saint Nicholas relics on display !

This Orthodox cathedral is a place of worship as well as a center for Greek life in this Florida enclave. It was built in the 1940's and houses byzantine religious art. Amazing dome. Sponsors annual retrieval of the cross from the nearby bayou on ephiany.

Go...see it ask questions and understand. We met the organ player and spent an hour with him while he explained the Church. It is simply beautiful and the people are so NICE. It is 5 minuets from Tarpon springs and is so worth the visit!!!! This is a perfect example of Tarpon Springs culture.

Visited at night and there were activities going on. Did not join in as it was a short visit. Plan to return on other visits there.

My parents got married here I love looking back at there wedding photos and then seeing the real thing. It's so gorgeous and comming on holidays may be a hastle to find a sear however it's beautiful when they sing the hyms. The busiest times are January 6, Easter, and Christmas. Each is just breathtakingly beautiful and so down to earth. St Nicholas Greek church is a must see.

St Nicholas Greek Orthodox church is the only church I visit for Easter, and any other time! It is the most beautiful church I've ever seen .. It has gorgeous stained glass, beautifully detailed paintings all around and nice gold accents, including the chandelier. All in all best Greek church in america, reminds me of Greece:-) ! I love it

Despite its name this is a tiny, old chapel with vivid paintings of religious figures in orthodox tradition. The atmosphere is very respectful since it is used for services and prayer. Votive candles and holy cards and items are available for purchase. The history of the church follows that of the town where the Greek imprint is strong. There is a booklet available in English giving a history of the church.

This was a beautiful and ornate church that is modestly sized. We were up from Cape Coral for a day trip and decided to stop here. We weren’t disappointed.

I am so glad I went in to check it out. I am not very spiritual but once you step into the aisles one can't help to be moved.

We stopped in on a Friday afternoon, because we had seen pictures of this church on the internet and were curious to see how magnificent it might be in person. It truly was gorgeous with the paintings on the walls, on the ceilings, in the dome, the stained-glass was gorgeous. We just didn't know what we were looking at, because there was no guide, so no explanation. But, still taking it all in, it feels like a beautiful place to worship the Lord. We are glad we made the trip and plan on going back with my parents.
Christos anesti!!!

We killed time on a raining morning and was glad we stopped. We enjoy looking at the architecture of churches and learning about different Faith's. The caretaker was on hand and spent close to a hour with us. He was very informative. The church was beautiful.
Another Magnificent Greek Cathedral!
Just go in! Whether during a liturgy or not. You would never think a small town like Tarpon Springs would have a church like this- but of course this is a very large and old traditional Greek community- so it makes sense!
