I have been to several capitol buildings over the years and WV has one of the prettiest. The gold dome is very visible from the highway. Although the capital was closed we were able to view the outside and grounds on a beautiful fall day. I have been inside before but my daughter who was with me has not had the opportunity yet. Perhaps I will be able to bring her back in the future. Don't forget they also have a fine museum in the grounds, too.

The WV State Capitol Complex is home to beautiful, historic buildings and statues. The landscaping, especially in the spring and summer, is beautiful and a pleasure to stroll through between meetings. My favorite spot is the Lincoln Walks at Midnight statue on the south-side of the complex, facing the Kanawha River. It is so significant due to the historical origins of the state but, history aside, makes for a nice place to take in the Capitol dome (when it isn't under construction).

Visitor Friendly. A great afternoon with grand daughter. The personnel allowed grandfather/granddaughter to visit locals of state legislators. A fun and educational day.

A great stop if you're looking for a bit of West Virginia history. Free too! A nice area to walk around as well.

Visited on WV Day...very empty and quiet. Had time to roam and look. Be sure to exit on 2nd floor toward Kanawha River for great pictures.

the staff at this "place" was rude, sloppy and poor employees. we shall never return to this location. for a government building the floor was dirty and dirty dish's left on tables shame shame

Interior dome under construction. Exterior dome beautiful. Tour guide lacked passion and personality. Loved the chandeliers, variety marble and ceilings.

I walk all the time at the State Capitol with my dog. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. There are no thru roads so you can walk safely with pets and family. I suggest going to the cultural center

We took a tour of the Capitol and everyone was so nice and welcoming. Our tour guide Grace, loosened up after awhile but at first appeared almost rude but that was the only negative of our trip though. My mom has a walker and we were able to tour the building. My parents are both elderly and wished to tell stories about the countless times they were in the Capitol back when, but every employee were gracious and listened with interest. I was so thankful to be able to take my parents to their home state (I was born in WV as well, moving away when I was 9) as it may be the last time they get to visit and reminisce. I’m grateful for my rich heritage and it was such a lovely trip. The Capitol building is gorgeous and the tour walks you through the history of the building, governors and landmarks, as well as other points of interest. Another couple on the tour with us said that they are touring all the states capitols and this one was by far the most lovely so far! So proud of WV!!!!

Don't waste your time unless you want to hear ALL about the governor. Just another beautiful expensive building,
Highlights was meeting th 1st lady who was extremely gracious & friendly.

We took the interesting half-hour tour of the building that included the House of Delegates and Senate chamber. The highest capitol dome in the US is not accessible as in the second highest—Kansas.

When you first get a glimpse of the West Virginia State buildings you are truly stunned, its absolutely gorgeous. The stunning shiny gold dome is amazing. There is a massive car park with meter parking around the back of the building. Don't let all the workmen and their machinery put you off, as there is a lot of building work going on. Its well worth stopping and having a walk around. The monument to the war dead is also very respectfully done.

One of the most beautiful capitol buildings that you will ever seen. It was nicer even than the US Capitol. The free guided tour was fine, but the building itself was the highlight.

Wow! It's almost like being in Washington, DC. This building (and the grounds) are really exquisite. We arrived in the pouring rain but endured to find the public entrance to the building and were able to register for a capitol tour starting 15 minutes later. The guide was very knowledgeable and we saw and learned a lot about this impressive structure. Certainly not a site to miss with in Charleston, a town that offered us little else. The gold dome, the intricate marble carvings, access to both the senate and house chambers... learned a bit of history and politics too.

I gave this three stars mostly because the capital is undergoing a renovation and you see nothing of the capital dome. The renovation isn’t going to be completed for two more years. Alex, our docent, was good. You visit the Senate Chamber and the House chamber, and the Governor’s reception room, but that’s about it.

The building and the grounds were really nice. Easy to find and convenient parking but bring change because it is metered parking. The dome is covered in gold leaf impressive. The staff was helpful. We joined and tour of school children and the guide was very patient. We were able to visit the House and Senate.

Excelent walk beside the kanawha river to the capítol area. Great view of colonial Houses . The capítol view and monument cert impressive

Unique capitol as it is set up as a complete center with multiple buildings and museum as well as a memorial. The entire place was well maintained and manicured. It provided a fantastic place for an afternoon stroll.

Our grandson is very interested in state capitol buildings. This is a magnificent building. Built in the 1930's, very ornate with lots of marble, brass, crystal chandeliers. There were no sessions that day, so we just wandered around the building. They offer guided tours but our grandson wanted to go without a formal tour. We were able to go into both chambers and pretty much anywhere in the building. The rotunda is closed while the dome is being refurbished so that was a little disappointing but still we were able to see most of the building. Everyone we encountered were super friendly and helpful. They have brochures and booklets available. The entire experience was pleasant and cost-free. There is a gift shop next to the building.

West Virginia has one of the prettiest Capitol buildings in the U.S. Tours are offered, there's a cafeteria on the bottom floor, and the grounds are beautiful. I see lots of tourists and school groups visiting frequently.

This is a pretty Capital Building.... Beautiful river across the street; but some observations It was difficult finding parking nearby and "meter parking" is limited. We went to the information desk about 12 noon and no one was there (at lunch ?) ? We tried to locate the "Museum" on the grounds and no luck, and no signs (used Google Maps ?)

The exterior and most of the interior of the building is beautiful, however the men's rooms could use some work,at least, the one I was in had cracks and holes in the walls.
the Senate and House Galleries are showing some wear give you a good view of observing the legislatures when in session.

Now that our state has taken to frisking visitors and restricting us like criminals I have grown to detest visiting for any reason. The grounds are still nice, but you are under the thumb of security with every move. IF you so much as attempt to look into the capitol building there will be security at your heels. I grew up walking on the grounds and playing frisbee after a picnic, but now you cannot do a thing. My kids used to feed the squirrels and now they have kids, but the grandkids are not permitted to feed the squirrel thanks to father-law. Once an educational, interesting piece of history, now just another restricted mess.

Stop by the State Capitol if you get a chance just to admire the architecture and learn some history! It's a great way to spend a few hours while in Charleston.

Stunning architecture and richly appointed legislative chambers. Fitting for a state capitol of West Virginia.

A visit to the State Capitol is a must when in Charleston! It truly is a beautiful building...worth a walk around the exterior and through the building upstairs as well as the first floor. Recently renovated, the building is stunning! Designed by architect Cass Gilbert (Woolworth Building, Supreme Court Building, Detroit Public Library, among many others), the Capitol dates back to the 1920s. Check out the beautiful marble (three different kinds) throughout the building and the Czech crystal chandelier. Look up at the dome, with its gold leaf! Enjoy the galleries of the official portraits of the many West Virginia governors, including John D. Rockefeller. For parking, use the metered visitor parking lot; note that on-street parking around the capitol is permit only. And don't forget to return for the nighttime view with the capitol dome all lit up!

This is the most beautiful state capitol I have ever seen! There is also a very nice cultural center attached, as well as a very moving veterans memorial. It was just to difficult to capture in a photograph, but if you stand in the center of the memorial and clap or shout, the sound echoes. As a veteran, I also appreciated the statue in homage to women veterans.

The roof gleams in the sun, and the building looks just shy of majestic; it looks solidly built and safe. A feeling of security seems to accompany the building.

The gold top of the capital was interesting. Just ran around the building during an afternoon run along the river.

Our beautiful state capital is a must see. Take unsalted peanuts to feed the squirrels outside. It's a nice place to take pictures and inside is quiet and breath taking.

My family and I stopped here briefly and were so very impressed! The West Virginia Capitol Building is absolutely gorgeous. The majestic dome is truly stunning... especially in the bright sunlight! We did not have time to tour any of the buildings but hope to do so during a return visit.

Stunningly beautiful. It is across the river from University of Chatleston and you have a beautiful view from either side of the Kanawha River.

Stop here at night to take pictures. Minimal Christmas decorations. Nothing special but worth a pit stop. Free parking, near governors mansion & university of Charlestown

It's always nice to visit at State Capitol. Ufryhyihguujgy ygffuy fgnnbgukkdnigf kdykiddiyfvhi hhffg

We had decided to take a scenic drive from Summersville, West Virginia. We ended our trip at the Capitol. It's a beautiful building. They do guided tours, but they were not the day were there. We walked around on our own and were able to take lots of pictures, etc.

The best part of the visit is a walk around the grounds. But they do leave their doors open to visitors, including on the weekends for a self-tour.

This museum was quite large and wound its way through eons of history. Several exhibits were displayed as though they were in the building of that period. There was a log cabin and a company store for example. There were voice overs explaining displays that sometimes ran over each other. They needed sound cones overhead to limit the bleed. You definitely need a couple of hours to fully explore this museum.

I travel frequently, but this was the first time that I have been inside a state capital. They have tours or you can walk around common areas. There is also a West Virginia History Museum with free admission, just a one minute walk from the capital. This was one of the most beautiful buildings that I have been in.

I've just been on a 3 and a half week solo adventure of West Virginia and decided to visit the state Capitol complex on a really hot 38 degrees afternoon. There is excellent and inexpensive parking on site. The park land and complex is lovely and peaceful the day I visited it was mid week September and there was no one around. I walked the complex first trying to find a way into the Capitol which I had assumed would be on the front road side but that was locked, tried a side entrance that was also locked, so with no one around to ask I visited the state museum first which was excellent (5 stars) they told me the entrance was opposite them but at 4.30pm when I arrived it was then too late for a tour. It looks like a fascinating and beautiful building. I just think the signposting to the entrance could be better.

Easy to get to and park. Metered parking 25 cents per half hour. Enter on the sides of the building. Confusing to navigate and somewhat dirty but impressive. A little history but don't need a ton of time to go through it. Beautiful grounds!

Friendly staff as we wandered around marble lined hallways touring at our own pace. There is help desk to pick up literature and answer any questions. The footprint of the capitol is massive so if you exit building to front entrance, be aware its a fair walk back around to cultural center museum. Be aware that the dome is being repaired until 2020 so dome interior is obstructed by temporary walls. There are still plenty of elaborate chandeliers and chambers to see.

The staff was friendly and helpful. Got in, took care of what was needed, and got to enjoy a leisurely lunch afterwards.

The West Virginia Capitol is a very nice building inside and out. The place has so much history. There is a wonderful memorial to the soldiers of all wars. It is a must see when in West Virginia.

the grounds are beautiful however the inside of this building is spectacular. Marble floors that shine like the moon....beautiful wood everywhere. Photography from most of WV famous artist.

I am making it a point to visit all the US Capitols, and this is the last one on the east coast for me. What a wonderful trip to see these beautiful mountains. The Capitol itself is a very large building surrounded by a campus, This alone was a good walk, I always try to tour the building, and did this one on my own, As I was there toward the end of their day, I didn't see everything, but enough to appreciate its structure. The Rotunda is being repaired, so I did not see the interior dome. Must come back someday to do that. What I saw, I enjoyed, and recommend that parents take their kids to state capitols to learn some history. The museums are also a must. Some statues to note are Booker T Washington. Stonewall Jackson, The coal miner, and Lincoln.

Unlike most state capitols, this building is open on weekends. However you can only self tour then as the tours are weekdays only. I was only here on a Sunday so I did the self tour. There is plenty of metered parking around the complex. The building is huge and well sign posted. You enter thru security. It’s huge inside but on a self tour you cannot see the senate or house. The dome is currently under repair too.

I was amazed at the beauty of the Capitol. We drove by on a bright sunny morning and the Gold Dome was brilliant. Once inside we were in awe of wall to wall marble, and the beautiful chandeliers. You will not be disappointed. Plus the Cultural Center and War Memorial are right there. Make it a day of fun.

I went on a Saturday and there is not a guided tour on Saturday. An expansive and beautiful old building, but nothing special. Check out the museum across the way for the history of WV. That is more worth the time.

We called a couple of months ago and tours were out because of covid. When we got there the tours had started up again but needed a 24 hour pre order. Oh well we saw the rotunda and the House room. Very nice building inside and out

Every May for about the past 10 years we have visited WV and we make sure to always see the capitol building. During the week you can have a guided tour of the inside and it is a good tour. This year we got there around 5PM and just strolled the grounds. The flowers are beautiful. The statuary is amazing, Our favorite is the WV coal miner. We also visit the war memorial each year--WWI, WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War and the list of names. Thank you for remembering.

We didn't get to do our usual 'stand under the dome' picture as after lots of walking round looking for it we found out it was cordoned off, but the rest of the building is just as beautiful as other Capitol Buildings.

Saw the brilliant gold dome from the road and had to drive by. Great architecture capped by a golden dome that dazzles. Worth the drive by and around the area.

We love touring the State Capitol. If you appreciate historical architecture or just history, this is a great place to spend an afternoon.

The capitol is a beautiful building to visit. The people working there were very friendly and will answer any questions that you have. All of the state offices are within the complex area and even the Governor's Mansion is next to the capitol. If you are hungry, there is a great cafe in the basement with reasonable prices. Parking is not free and you will be ticketed if the meter runs out. There were several cars with tickets.

I am here on a regular basis, and the architecture is quite fantastic. I have visited many state capitols, and West Virginia’s is the most beautiful.

Superb example of neoclassical architecture... an American Pantheon, with pediment, dome and columns.

This is a very impressive structure. And the history that has happened here and is still happening just blows your mind. Don’t try to see it in just an hour. Take a whole day if you can.

Hours are nice. If u want a guided tour u need to call ahead for reservations. Otherwise u are on your own. The entrance is on the side not the front like u would think. U go through security and then just wander around. We went on a Saturday and I wish we would have had a guide. Looking around alone we weren't able to appreciate what we were looking at.

The grounds, buildings & statues of the West Virginia State Capitol are perfect for a variety of occasions from a simple relaxing walk to a glorious wedding.

The West Virginia Capitol grounds are extensive. The capitol building, itself, is immense. Words fail to explain just how this building can make you feel insignificant compared to the collective whole of the state government. The grounds also include the Governor's Residence and several buildings dedicated to various departments. Be sure to walk around and view the public art and memorials dotting the grounds.

Tour was just bare bones mediocre, lasting 1/2 hour. One learns more at the cultural center across the street. We were disappointed after visiting pa and nj’s capitols.

We were traveling to North Carolina and stopped to stretch legs. It is an amazing capitol. We were able to have a personal tour. I really enjoyed our visit. Don't forget to visit the state museum in the complex!

So far I have personally visited 45 out of 50 states and I always try to make a point of visiting the state capitol building whenever possible.
So that being said I would have to say that West Virginia's capitol building is one of the most beautiful I've seen. Its gold covered dome is impressive and its porticos with stately columns are grand indeed, all West Virginians can be proud of this grandiose capitol building on the banks of the Kanawha River! Do take the time to walk around and see some of the monuments on the grounds surrounding the capitol building itself. You'll find a monument to this state's veterans and the state museum and governor's mansion are here as well. While walking the grounds look for the all black squirrels along with the usually lighter colored ones running about the grounds from tree to tree,I've rarely seen these and I'm not sure if they're a different species or more likely just an uncommon color variation.
However brief your visit is in West Virginia's capital city do take the time for a close up view of their capitol building. There are also free tours offered of the capitol but we unfortunately didn't have the time to take one but it probably would be a worthwhile endeavor if you choose to take a tour.

You do not want to miss going into this Capitol. The feeling of greatness and peace. The Capitol is beautiful at night with the Gold Top that you can see from far away. A don't miss sight to visit. My visit was in 2016

The building was closed when we got there so we walked around the grounds. The grounds are very nice. The capitol is a gorgeous building with some great views. Very enjoyable

Beautiful architecture. Friendly staff for tour. Got to observe Senate session. Amazing marble, carvings and portraits. The grounds are beautiful as well.

We could drive by & see it however since we were on a Sunday it was closed to visitors. We think it's very hard to close down on a weekend since that is when most people are traveling. We met another couple that was very disappointed as we were

Tour is only about 30 minutes long. Tour Guide very informative and answered all questions. This State Capital Building is better that seeing the Capitol in DC. Would recommend taking the tour.just to see all the Marble & Chandlers - very Opulent.

We enjoyed touring the building with one of the employees. It's a beautiful building and everyone we met was friendly.

It definitely is a beautiful building. I brought my 8 and 11 year old there to enrich there homeschool lesson of the branches of government. They had a BIG pharmaceutical student group there, so we unfortunately we're unable to do a tour, per the tour guide, bc of the noise. We tried to sit in on a session but after waiting 20 min for it to start my kiddos were quite bored. I wish the self guided tour book was more interactive or had a map of things to go look at in the book. But, bc it's a federal building I see the security risk of doing so. Hopefully next time we make it up there we will be able to take a tour. Other than that everyone seemed friendly and answered any questions we had.

The WV State Capitol building is so beautiful. There's something about that gold dome that just makes it special, like the state of WV itself. The grounds are open to the public and the architecture and sculptures are amazing. I read that the architect liked his design of the interior chamber of the WV Capitol so much he used it for the Supreme Court as well. Larger version, of course. But the State Capitol is a great place to visit and is part of a Capitol Complex that includes the museum and Cultural Center. So much to see.

A LOT like the nation's capital in D.C. just less crowded. Beautiful grounds and scenery all around it. Lincoln Walks At Midnight (statue) is solemn and breath-taking. The Cultural Center and W.Va. Museum are close by on the grounds. (don't miss them) The marble interior and view up into the dome is unbelievable. Lots of history inside also. Old style architecture.

You can either take a guided tour or do a self guided one. There is much information available to do either. We loved the marble all over the place, many great crystal chandeliers and light fixtures that just gleamed. The governor's office reception room ladies were so welcoming and lovely to chat with. All kinds of free information available there also. The dome is one of a kind that is so beautiful in the early morning sun. Very enjoyable.

The grounds and buildings are beautiful. We visited on a brisk fall day. The statues and military monuments around the capital campus are so interesting.

The capitol building was beautiful. The dome is unique and worth the stop alone. The statues around the capitol are neat to see, also.

Walked around, the grounds had statue and memorials that were interesting. Parking was easy ( this hasn't been the norm, when visiting Capitols). The only problem is the rotunda is being refurbished. The 3rd picture is of the closed off rotunda.

Stopped by on a Sunday on our way to NC. Beautiful dome, marble and location right on the river. Can't comment on tours since everything was closed.

We are visiting all us capitals. This capital was not very interesting and our tour guide was terrible. There was information that could have been talked about
but she was not interested in talking about much at all.

We enjoy visiting state capitol buildings across the country. WV has one of the most beautiful capitol building of them all. When we drove across the bridge, the gold-leaf dome lit up like a beacon. The rotunda has a 2,000 pound chandelier and marble everything. Truly, it is one of the prettiest in the country. It is worth the stop.

The West Virginia capitol grounds are beautiful. Parking was great and close in. The capitol itself semed to be under renovation. The dome was covere in plastic. Still a very good experience.

The West Virginia Capitol is an imposing reminder of the past wealth of the state. Modeled on the U.S. Capitol, it is surprisingly grand for a state with such current budget and economic problems. Also, the dome and rotunda are shrouded completely for extensive repairs due to water damage. Given the scale and high quality of the exterior and interior elements still visible, the covered portions must be impressive.

in the middle of town located next to the river its worth the visit.
When you really look at the architecture highlights you only begin to enjoy the setting and beauty of it all. Highly recommend this walk

Interesting history. Cool structure and monuments along the riverfront. We didn’t stay long. Not teenagers favorite thing.

Beautiful architecture and landscape. It's a nice stop for pictures if in the area. Plus, the way there was beautiful too!

I am kind of partial to WV but this has to be one of the most beautiful Capitols in the world. Sits along the Kanawha River with a spacious grounds. A golden dome like no other.

Beautiful WV Capitol building on the East End with easy interstate access. The beautiful & well manicured grounds are inviting to enjoy by foot. The gold dome is a welcoming sight to travelers & locals. The interior is worth some time touring.

This was very clean and full of beautiful trees. It's so quiet. Nice to walk around. Visit the cultural center and gift shop while in the area.

It’s an impressive building but it is protected like the Capitol in DC. Most other state capitals have more access so that wasn’t great. Nice building in general.

Went to state capital to see chandelier with Czechoslovakia crystals, went through security and were told it was not on site as it was in Pennsylvania for repairs. Do not know when it will return.

A lovely place to visit, nice architecture and a wonderful memorial to the soldiers of all wars. Bring a snack for the nearly tame squirrels.

For a State historically muddled in corruption and confusion, it is remarkable that the West Virginia Capitol, and it's campus grounds, is among the most beautiful in the USA. A visit should include a lingering encounter with the main building, from the Governor's Office, at the entrance to the west wing, to the AG's Office at the east end of the main corridor. This will take you under the spectacular rotunda. The second floor of this same path includes the Senate and house Chambers, and another view of the central core under the rotunda. The chandelier is remarkable, and views to the river and the inner courtyard are also worth the look in this central core area. Note the many alabaster lamps that line the hallway. Allow at least an hour or more for the Culture Center. The state museum in the lower level is over the top! And it's all free and enjoyable for all ages.

Gorgeous building, marble everywhere and the dome is spectacular. We would have liked to have done a guided tour but were there 2 hours before it started so we did a self guided tour. We enjoyed it very much.

I love to visit the state capitol and it's museum. When ever we have company a trip to the capitol museum is a must. It's large, very clean and filled with history. There are sound effects in different areas that really takes one back in time. Their service and bathroom facilities are excellent. I recommend a quick stop at their gift shop and across the courtyard is the capitol building also fascinating visit.

In the few years we have lived here in this hidden gem of a city, we have visited the Capitol building on several occasions. It is a lovely building with rich history. iews of the chambers are awesome as is looking up in the center of the Rotunda. When we have visited, there have been guides that have been helpful. Last time there two months ago. In the evening when the lights are on in the Dome, the view of the building is spectacular.

This was #12 of capitol visits for us and one of my favorites. We found it easily and parking was simple; we actually had an employee approach us as we parked and tell us not to put too much in the meter, as he would quit checking after 5:00. Very nice, plus he told us which door to enter which has been a major problem when visiting most capitols. We were pleasantly surprised with the beauty of this Capitol. The only complaint was no one was manning the visitor desk so we had to leave the building to find the stamp for the Capitol Passport.

We went on a Sunday so there was no guided tour but we were able to walk around at our leisure. The building and decor are amazing. Grand! I'd go back to do the tour and learn more.

This is a beautiful building sets alongside a working river. It is very easy to access and has adequate parking. Nice grounds maintenance with lots of trees and wildlife around. Don't pass it up.

Make the most of visiting this beautiful building. From the outside, walk around the whole building, seems to be something beautiful from every angle. The inside is gorgeous, the detail in the interior design is amazing. Would recommend the tour but if it's not available when you're there, still take the time to walk around. Make sure to stop by the museum also, it's well worth the visit.

Took family to visit the WV State Capital and nothing but positive things to say from the treasury worker who walked with us to show us where to entry to House Clerk who took time to discuss and mock a debate bill with my son. And a private tour of Del. Cowles office and the Speaker of the Houses office. It gave my 10 yr. old son an insight he will not forget. It's nice to see the people we send into government give back even if for a few at a time. The security police did well also except for trying to have my boy root for FSU instead of WVU......he was having fun.....keep up the good work and continue to always do what's best for all West Virginians God bless.

The Capital building is gorgeous on the outside. We went on a Tuesday around 130 and it was practically empty. We climbed the steps and realized there was no entry (good workout). There are no clear signs telling you how to get in but we finally found an entrance. Inside is okay but again no clear flow or direction for self tour. We walked up two staircases that just went to offices. Frustrating. Okay for something free to do. We had a nice time outside looking at memorials and statues'.

If you ever visit Charleston, WV, go ahead visit the state capital building. It's marvelous, worth the trip. Locals consider it's one of the most beautiful capital buildings in the US.

We were here for fun and we had a very fun time!!! Our names are Kittyllama and Aubryllama and we are from Paris. We suggest you go to Paris and whatever this place is called. I had to do this for school, so did my friend.

I see why residents ofWV were upset in 1932. This place used the best of the best when building the latest generation of the state capitol. Currently much of the ornate dome is covered and getting a facelift. I recommend you also visit the state museum right there next to the capitol.

The Capitol building is stunning, an outstanding architectural work by a well-known architect. In addition to the most beautiful dome on any capitol building, the interior of white marble is exquisite. You can explore this awesomeness all you want as long as you don’t go into occupied legislative chambers. The Capitol staff are incredibly welcoming. They stopped to talk with us and make suggestions for things to see in the building. During a legislative break, one of the legislators introduced us to a man who knew the history of everything at the Capitol and who entertained us with anecdotes. The interior of the dome is closed for renovation during 2018 and 2019, but everything else is open. The grounds are also beautiful, a lovely place to sit and rest or enjoy a picnic. Metered public parking is available on the grounds. If you have trouble walking, you may want to bring a portable seat as there isn’t any public seating in the hallways.

There are fountains flowers and stairs. Great place to walk, relax and take great pictures of family

It is a nice capital building. Shows so history. It's free. Nothing stood out but if you have the time or like to look at capital builds its for you.

On our way out of Charleston while driving along the New Rriver, we passed West Virginia's Capitol. With is sculptured golden dome, it is one of the most beautiful Capitol buildings in the U.S.

Very nice, welcome. Ace, lots of history and plenty of grounds for pictures, near downtown. Lovely place.

Beautiful building in a wonderful park setting. We were disappointed that guided tours were not available on our travel date, because we would have loved to have seen more of the building and learned more about WV.

The family did not have any guided tour, but we explored the building and the surrounding areas. We were able to see the Chambers for the House and Senate. It was a very nice display and was enjoyed by all.

Still on my quest to score all 50 state capitals. This is a very nice bluiding well worth your time. The tour was short and quick. Nice gift shop. Museum is closed on Mondays

The West Virginia state Capitol building is wonderful. It's dome is one of the most beautiful of the 32 state capitols I have seen. The gold is very cool. The grounds are a nice walk and parking is easy and close - but on a meter (they could do without those at their capitol)
If you are passing through or visiting - take an hour and see this wonderful state Capitol.

Free to walk around. Pretty building. Would be good if they had more information about the state or things going on in the building

Really organized, well ornamented and the architecture is just somethin that you can wonder upon. Entertaining for a walk and getting to know the different parts of it...

Typical state capital with tours Monday through Saturday (but make reservation for Saturday). Bring change for parking. Entrance on California St

Many people may have never visited a Capitol and more than one of them may be kind of off the beaten path, difficult to get to or just intimidating for one reason or another. West Virginia's Capitol is super easy to get to, easy and inexpensive to park at has very nice grounds to walk and is just plain stunning with its gold dome. See the Capitol the War Memorial the State Museum and many outstanding statues in a relatively short time and be prepared to come away impressed.

very beautiful. we walked around it and there was a festival right next to it when were there. nice to walk around the capitol and around the festival to see things from west Virginia

The capital and surrounding grounds are worth a visit. The museum is outstanding , educational and free . The museum is a history of West Virginia with beautiful exhibits. The capital is very accessible and tourist friendly. One of the nicer capital buildings in the US.

The Capitol Building is extremely clean spacious and very well maintained. This is the first time i have visited a Parliament building and I must say that it was very insightful taking a peek into a piece of history, and getting some sort of idea how things are done in this August institution

I have heard about the WVA capitol dome for years and finally had an opportunity to see it. WOW. It really is difficult to comprehend the effect of the Gold Dome until you see it from the outside and the inside. Quite frankly it is dramatic.

The Gold dome is just the beginning of our beautiful Capitol, as you walk around you see the carvings on the building and the beautiful doors, inside are the beautiful marble accents and ìn the very center the Magnificent Crystal Chandaliers, Paintings of past governors are beautiful.

Great place to take the kids or dog to run around! Restaurants close by. Lots of open space and fountains!

Believe it or not this is a very interesting place to go inside an check out. Even has a small museum. Beatiful grounds along the river. Go in and check out inside of the dome. Cool.

I am on a quest to visit all 50 state capitols. The capitol in Charleston did not disappoint. The grounds are gorgeous. There was plenty of street parking nearby and access into the building was organized and quick. We were able to wander around the inside and capture some great photos of both the house & the senate. The rotunda, both inside & out, is absolutely phenomenal.

I have gone here since my youth. My father never came to the Capitol without walking me over the grounds and into the building. He was so proud of it. I've continued this tradition with my own children who are now grown. My daughter and son in laws had never visited before. We viewed the grounds then went inside to the rotunda. They loved its beauty. Then we walked the marble steps to where the House and Senate chambers are. To our surprise our Delegate from Fayette County, Tom Fast, was at his desk working. He gave my family a your that they enjoyed. We then went to the Senate chambers to take pics in there. Senator Greg Boso walked up and offered to take a pic with all of our family together. This was a treat for all of us to be in our State Capitol where laws are made, and the business of our State is conducted. No matter your party affiliation this is a place to take pride in for all West Virginians.

I've seen alot of Capitol's in my time and this one takes the cake as 2nd behind the US capitol. The gold dome sticks out. If you're in Charleston you need to stop by to see it. Parking is free all around it in the off hours or weekends.

We enjoyed the tour of the state capitol building. They are restoring the tower and dome, so we were not able to see that part of the building. A lot of history about the building and previous capitol buildings.

Awesome place to visit and middle of the state Capital and near to all the museums and in the weekends parking is free right in front of the monument. You can also cover the Botanical garden here.
You will be able to cover everything in 3hrs time and then can go ahead and visit the near by museums.

There is plenty of metered parking and access is through the east or west wings of the capitol. There is a security screening, so leave knives and mace in the car. The history is very interesting and the 2 ton chandelier and gold leafed dome are impressive. It is a nice stop and a beautiful setting on the river.

There are many things to like about the capitol. It's gorgeous from the outside, there is nearby free parking, and it's an interesting walk around the building.
Yet the interior of the capitol feels cold and sterile. There are empty spaces within the capitol where it feels it's incomplete, as if something, anything, should have painted to reflect the history of West Virginia.
This doesn't mean you shouldn't visit. It's just odd that the grandeur of the exterior isn't supported by the interior banality.

We have always been in awe of the Capitol's beauty. Granted, our Capitol may not be as big as other states have, but it is a wonderful, historical landmark definitely worthy of visiting.

While in town, my family and I decided to pay a visit to the WV state capital.
Such a lovely gold dome building sitting alongside the Ohio river. Immediately next door is the governors mansion. A beautiful red brick structure that subtly screams history.
If you're in the area, definitely check these two beautiful buildings out.

As a history buff who enjoys traveling through the United Sates, We often visit state capitols and when available take tours. We were overwhelmed at how beautiful the building was with it's gold dome and understated but stately assembly and senate rooms. In the governor's office there is a great selection of magazine and tourist brochures. Our tour guide was well versed in the history and function of the Capitol building. If you are in downtown Charleston, be sure to visit this state capitol. Everyone in this building was polite and friendly.

The capital grounds were well kept and in good condition for the festival. . We did not tour the inside of the capital.

The Capitol really is worth going out of your way to visit. I always enjoy the portraits of past governors on the walls. The Supreme Court is quite impressive, so don't forget to stop in there after seeing the House and Senate chambers. The cafeteria isn't bad, either. You can really get a feel for the state workers and the culture of the place in there.

My spouse and I arrived just as a free tour was concluding, and since another one would not begin for some time, we opted to do a self-guided tour. After being welcomed by the people at the front desk, we were told to make ourselves at home, and to feel free to explore where we desired. Now that's southern hospitality! Be sure to pick up the Walking Tour and Visitor Information Brochure!
From its magnificent 292-foot gold dome (it is 4.5 feet taller than that of the US Capitol) to its sculpted mythological figures above entrance doors, the building has an abundance of details to enjoy.
We began by climbing the marble stairs of the West Wing to the floor above where one finds the Senate and the House Chambers. Since neither was in session, we had the opportunity to linger and walk about at leisure, and to take photos galore. From this level, we were also able to look up to the dome. Currently, the rotunda on the ground floor is surrounded by scaffolding due to renovations, which was disappointing. Since few people were around, we poked about on this upper level, taking our time, peeking into offices, and just being plain nosy.
We wanted to see the chamber of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, which is located on the third floor. Unable to locate it on our own, we were aided by one of the House Delegates who happened upon us looking lost. He led the way outside to the East Wing (who knew?), and then showed us an elevator that deposited us at the door of the court. Again, southern hospitality at its best. However, the door was locked since court was not is session. Again, we were rescued by a wonderful person, a secretary this time, who found the key, unlocking the chamber for us. She gave us our own private tour, explaining its details, and that is a smaller version of the US Supreme Court, both designed by Cass Gilbert.
Finding our way back to the West Wing and those magnificent staircases, and then down to the rotunda area, we walked the Hall of Governors featuring portraits of W. Virginia's past chief executives. We concluded with the stunning blue and white Governor's Reception Room that features a parquet floor laid with herringbone patterns. The portraits of W.Virginia's immediate past two governor hang in this reception area.
Wow! We had a great time. So glad we did this on our own!! And again, thanks for the southern hospitality!!

Having recently moved to WV, we heard about the statue of Abe Lincoln at the State Capitol...What a beautiful tribute to WV and Abe Lincoln..very moving to know you are standing where Abe Lincoln once stood.

This is a beautiful building and area to visit. We loved seeing the ornate style of the Capital building and especially enjoyed the museum next door. We learned a lot about our great state by walking through the exhibits and reading as we went.

The Museum was the highlight of our statehouse tour because it was next door and the rotunda was closed for repair for about two years. Still worth avisit because the guide (Royce) was excellent.

The tour of the building was an official one. Tours are scheduled every half hour. You are taken to the Senate chambers, the governor's reception area, etc. You learn some very interesting key points of West Virginia, such as the fact that it decided to secede from Virginia during the Civil War. If you do not feel like walking to a local eatery in the wilting midday heat, there is a spacious cafeteria in the basement; the chicken pot pie was excellent and the cafeteria employees were welcoming and friendly. Later on, we visited the Supreme Court chambers, where the security guard had the time to give an unofficial tour, relating all sorts of interesting info about the recent impeachment of every single member of the Supreme Court. Also, he made it interesting for kids as well. Despite the fact that the stunningly beautiful dome is covered because of repairs, this was a very cool place to visit. Generally speaking, West Virginia is an excellent tourist destination - beautiful green mountains, the gorgeous Kanawha River, and welcoming people.

Of course, our beautiful Capitol is the No. 1 visitor's stop in town. There is a BBT ATM on the first floor of the East Wing, next to the main entrance toTreasurer's Office where the flags are, by the door.

The WV Capitol is a must see whenever your in the area. Open to the public where you can go in and enjoy the history & richness of the state building. The outside grounds, fountains, statues, and the War memorial are all very beautiful & educational.

We were quite surprised that we would be admitted to the building on a Saturday afternoon. After we went through security, we were given free roam of the building. The dome is closed due to refurbishment, but the rest of the building holds many interesting artifacts as well as paintings. One of the guards took us outside, up on the lower roof, so that we could view the dome from a closer view. The hospitality was amazing! We were even given a pamphlet on the history of the Capital building by the guard, AND there were free bottles of water for us to enjoy due to the heat outside.
I was definitely impressed!

The WV state capitol is probably the most impressive capitol building in the country. The exterior and interior are magnificent. Grounds are beautifully landscaped, and other fine building are part of the complex. The lighting at night on the capitol building is something to behold.

Was here to visit the museum but we walked the grounds and enjoyed all of the wonderful sculptures which included a VERY nice Veterans Memorial.

We walked right-in (after going through security of course) and did our own self-guided tour through the building. We were also able to observe debate on the house floor from the galley.
Parking isn't easy, but we were able to find a meter in a lot near the building. Veterans memorial and state museum are on the same campus - both worth checking out.
I would recommend any group spend a couple of hours at the capitol, museum, and memorial. Interesting mix of architecture, history, and government.

We arrived too late for the guided tour, so we followed the recommended self-guided tour. We made our way through the building, visiting the legislative chambers, the rotunda and the portraits and sculptures.
In the House chamber the Sergeant-at-Arms gave us an impromptu tour of the House and info about the building. We got to talk to a couple of the Representatives.
This building's dome is more decorated than most we have visited.

We have been to the nation's capitol and about ten state capitols and this was the least informative, instructive, and interesting of any. Our guide clearly had a memorized script, which largely consisted of where the marble came from and dates of construction. No anecdotes on interesting politicians, past of present, noteworthy legislators or governors, nothing about how the functions of the branches of government evolved in West Virginia. In addition, there are very few exhibits or displays in the public areas to obviate any of these shortcomings. To compound the disappointment, the capitol is undergoing renovation and parts of it were not available for viewing. Tour guide was not chosen for outgoing and engaging nature, which you think would be part of the job interview process. Tour is free, and you can add a little meat to your knowledge by visiting the free state museum/cultural center next door.

Beautiful buildings. The great laden dome was amazing. The war memorial was nicely done with life like statues.

2 stars only because the rotunda is under renovation and was not visible. We went on a Saturday and the House & Senate & Court chambers were all locked up. Not even a glass window to peek through. So we didn’t get to see anything on the inside. The outside is lovely with the gold dome.

Of all the 50 State Capitols in the U.S. none compare to the State Capital of WV. Easily stands out against all other state Capitols. A masterpiece in architectural design. Something that all WVians can be proud of.

Never been here. Wow this is so amazing. Everything inside the capital is marble. Just amazing. I will be back to go through more when I have time.

This is probably the most beautiful state capitol. The gold dome is exquisite. Although the crystal chandilier was off getting cleaned and repaired we still enjoyed seeing the inside of the building. The senate room was very nice. People in the building were very gracious.

I'm amazed at the true beauty of our Capitol. Parking isn't great but it's worth a walk from a neighboring street to go into the atrium. The lawn is beautiful as well!

My Wife and I had an Awesome Summer traveling through so many cities and states We were looking forward to visiting Charleston We had made reservations at a local motel and planned to visit the Capital first and stay a few days and seeing the local attractions When we got to the Capital we were treated very rude by a Guard so we decided to skip the Capital visit. On our way to the motel we stopped at a convenient store for drinks "a few blocks from the Capital" and were approached by 3 Young Men knocking on our car window asking for Money. We decided then to cancel our reservations at our motel and leave Charleston. Drove to Williamson WV and stayed at a Historic Hotel and truly enjoyed our stay there

West Virginia’s capitol and complex are just beautiful. It’s nice just to walk around or to visit the various monuments and museum.

The capital is beautiful and full of history. The tour guide explained how they clean up chandelier every fall. They are gorgeous.

Unfortunately, the day we arrived there were no tours available nor could we find a brochure to help with a self guided tour. The building is absolutely beautiful. We did find both legislative chambers. The dome, inside and out, is stunning. The grounds are beautiful as well. And there is plenty of metered visitor parking available. Even without a tour, we are glad we stopped.

The state capital is well worth a visit. The capital is very impressive. Employee are very helpful. Wish we could have visited to rotunda, but it was under renovation.

West Virginia has one of the most beautiful capitols in the country. Well worth a visit. Currently the dome is being repaired and the interior rotunda is block off. Also, if visiting while the Legislature is in session anticipate a wait to get through security.

Beautiful chandeliers. There were great videos to describe how it was built. It would have been better to know where to go -- kind of unclear where to go to see more than just closed doors. Great to walk outside -- river is across the street.

Be sure to take the tour. You learn so much about this beautiful building and also about WV state government.

This is the most beautiful state capital I have ever seen! The cultural center is adjacent and a tour is a must!

I've seen the golden dome from the highway several times...finally made it to Charleston with time to see it up close. It would be fun to have a picnic on the lawn. This is such a pretty building and lawn, especially at night.

Easy to get to and very convenient from all highways and downtown. Just as pictured and great to learn about local history and the area.

My wife & I have visited 48 of the 50 state capitals in the US & this was by far the worst one we have visited. The website states that the capital is open on Sundays. However, it doesn't give any information on where to park or how to enter the building. We happened to be in Charleston on a Sunday afternoon on our way home from the east coast & decided to visit. I dropped my wife (who has a hard time walking) off at the front hoping we could enter close by & I found metered street parking on the east side. When I went back to rejoin my wife, I couldn't find a public entrance, but I happened upon a state employee about to enter via a locked entry & he directed me to towards a public entrance towards the back of the west side. I found the entrance & 2 security guards let us in. But everything except the bathrooms were locked up & there was nobody working there to give s assistance. I did find the tour desk & picked up a booklet titled "West Virginia State Capital Walking Tour & Visitor Information". Inside was a map that showed the capital complex & provided all the information on parking & entering the capital. I wish this brochure has been on the website instead of the useless brochure that is there now. We used the restrooms before we left & my wife told me that the restroom she used was one of the grossest ones she had been in. Bottom line: If you advertise that you are open on Sunday, you need to have a few people there to help visitors. Otherwise don't say that it is open.

It was nice to visit the capital. It was very quiet . Learned a great deal about the building and how they constructed it. Very impressed to see the rotunda up close. The gold detail does it no justice from the road . Need to see up close

The capitol in Charleston, WV is one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever been in. I grew up in WV but am now living in Florida, so anytime we go back for a visit, we have to walk the grounds and take some pictures. My husband is from NJ, so having the opportunity to give him and his parents a tour was a dream come true. They all thought it was breath taking.

It really is a beautiful building. It's nice to visit at least once if you are in the area. We decided to spend the night during a ride trip and the done is easily visible from the highway, so we decided to get a closer look

The capitol is accessible by pubic transportation, which is wonderful. The building is in the middle of the Capitol Plaza, which houses several government buildings, including the Governor's Mansion. I gave the Capitol 5 stars because of its beauty and because it's open on the weekends. Weekend openings are nice because working people can visit the building without the need to take time off from work. The building is beautiful and cost about $10 million to build in the 1920s and 1930s (during the Great Depression). The Dome has 23-karat gold atop it and is 5ft taller than the Dome on our Nation's Capitol Building in Washington, DC. I just couldn't stop taking pictures of this majestic building that faces a river.

Nice visit. Signage could be better for admittance. Detectors are in place at the two entrances. I parked at the meters on the front and needed to go through the detectors to get in and then again when I was done with the museum. Only I had to do it again when I needed to put more time on the meter. I had a nice gentleman let me in their Supreme Court Chamber and he informed me that theirs was designed by the same man who did our national supreme court building. Neat.

Even with security a high concern, we were treated very well and was able to sit in the gallery on the house end for a bit to see our state government in action. It was a great experience.

This is the most spectacular capitol dome you will ever see -- anywhere. You can see it from miles away and it just demands that you drive to see it up close (our trip was a Sunday, so little traffic, which might not be the case weekdays). Amazing!

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. Being in the House and Senate chambers was incredible. The structure was overwhelming.

Bill my tour guide was interesting and informative. The tour was about 45 mins and the capitol has an interesting past

This building is beautiful and has so much history. We took the guided tour and enjoyed the narration. All of the chandeliers had just had their fall cleaning and they glistened in the sunlight. What a photo!

The West Virginia State Capitol is perhaps the most beautiful state Capitol I have ever visited. The building and grounds are stunning.

The State Capital building is magnificent! The golden and black dome sits atop a classical design that looks like a Capital Building should look. The setting across from the river is idyllic. The inside of the building uses beautiful marble extensively. The view of the dome from inside is amazing. Be sure and take a peek at the chambers that house the Senate and House of Delegates. The grounds of the Capital are very nice and well-maintained. We definitely recommend stopping to visit the State Capital Building if you are in Charleston.

Each capitol that we vist we learn more and more educational things about our states. This capitol building was no exception. Our tour guide was knowledgeable about the history of the state and the bulding. The building was easy to get around. They had good artwork.

This is one of the prettiest capitols we've ever visited. It is so scenic as it sits on the Kanawha River. The whole building is open to touring.

We like to visit state capitals and Charleston is the least interesting one we've ever been to. West Virginia is a beautiful state but it's capital isn't.

they offer free tours here, not hard to get in, we were in the room where govenor holds his press conferences. There are beautiful chandeliers and Italian marble throughout. Many pamphlets you can pick up here on things in the area to do.

The West Virginia State Capitol is absolutely beautiful, inside and out! You can view this beauty from Interstate 64 and 77, East and West bound, as she stands proud for all to see. Go inside and be prepared for its charm! As you walk down the marble and granite halls, you will see all of the Governor's paintings of West Virginia's past. In the center of the Capitol you will see a breath-taking crystal chandelier that weighs over a ton. You can marvel in all that your eyes can take in! There are tours for you to take and when you leave this great place, you will understand whey people who visit here say they have encountered the friendliest people anywhere! Go visit and you will see why! Enjoy!

The West Virginia state capital is one of the prettiest capitals in the United States. When you walk inside the marble floors and the highs ceilings especially where the center of the dumb is and the chandelier are absolutely gorgeous. The grounds are well-kept and always perfectly groomed. I would suggest a visit of the capital and cultural center which is one the same grounds. The gold diamonds actual gold overlay with blue that represent the state colors, it's a beautiful block of walking and strolling and The gold diamonds actual gold overlay with blue that represent the state colors, it's a beautiful block outside of strolling around and the inside is gorgeous !

It's a nice place to visit and take in the architecture and beautiful surroundings. They are very nice and friendly here.

Unfortunately, the rotunda was currently under renovation and repair so we were unable to see that, but the pictures of it looked like it would be very nice. Legislative chambers are pretty and it was interesting to see that lobbyists set up their tables right outside the chambers to "grab" representatives before said lawmakers enter chambers. Tour was about a half hour in length.

We have visited several State Capitols over the years and we enjoy the history and information, including the architectural details. We were lucky in that there were only 4 of us on the tour, and the people in the Capitol complex were all very friendly.

Across the street from the West Virginia Museum they are a nice pair to visit when staying in the city. We had an overnight stop in Charleston and stayed a few minutes from the capital building. Very nice walking area to a shopping area and then over to the history in the museum and capitol building. There are guided tours, though they were not available when we were there.

Always interesting to see capital buildings. Very pretty, but was hard to get to, due to construction. I was really impressed with the veterans memorial right by the capital. If you live in WV you should make the trip if you are traveling it is well worth your time.

The coolest thing is you can literally just walk in and look around without being on a tour. Then when you've looked around the tour guide is sitting right in the center and can answer any questions. The dome is amazing. The chandeliers beautiful. The other neat thing is the gift shop and cafe. It really felt like we were one of the gang the way everyone was so welcoming.

We arrived later in the day in Charleston and stopped by the State Capital of West Virginia. The golden dome is bright with lights at night. Taking pictures on the steps of the building was a highlight.

Very pretty state capitol and easy to access. The rotunda is especially beautiful and everyone was very friendly. I'm still kind of confused as to the gold leaf and who thought that was a good use of taxpayer money, but overall a nice visit.

Love, love, love the Capitol Building. It is usually my destination for morning runs in the city of Charleston. Running along the Kanawha and seeing that dome is a highlight.

A fan of state capitols, I seized the opportunity to tour West Virginia’s while in Charleston. The decor is impressive with marble flooring and walls, delicately engraved flowers made of West Virginian woods throughout the legislative chambers and waiting rooms. Do not miss the Austrian crystal chandeliers in the House and Senate chambers and the Bohemian one in the Governor’s Reception Room. While not the most ostentatious state capitol I have toured, it is worth a visit.
We enjoyed watching both the House and Senate in session. The tour guide was very informative. I am glad I took the tour.

The West Virginia Capitol sits along the Kanawha River in Charleston, one block off of the I77/64 interstate. The Capitol, which is free and open to the public, was designed by Cass Gilbert, the architect that also designed our nation's capitol. From the gold dome to the marble floors, it is a beautiful edifice. The rotunda is always a temptation for children, teens and even some adults, to test out the acoustics. IF you are fortunate, someone will be singing- a treat to the ears. In the rotunda, be sure to admire the chandelier made of Czechoslovakian crystal. The view of the river from the steps is a must do for photos that will capture the statue "Lincoln Walks at Night". On the opposite side of the building, steps lead down to "the circle" which has a fountain. The grounds are shaded with large trees, green grass and beautiful flowers. The Capitol squirrels are used to people and will come close for treats. Put this on your list if you like to visit state capitals.

My brother & I walked 2.5 miles from our hotel to the Capitol! It was great! We talked to someone that cleans for a while and were able to get some great pictures of it. It is exactly like the Capitol in DC except the difference here in Charleston it has the gold dome which makes it beam in the sky!

This Capitol and it's grounds are beautiful. However, be aware that the only entrances open to the public at the West and East side entrances. Also the beautiful crystal chandelier is being repaired.

On a Sunday afternoon, I walked around the grounds of the Capitol building. The grounds had a nice landscape with tons of trees and statues. The Capitol building was also a pleasant site to see from the outside. Yet, the surrounding areas near the Capitol building were a bit rundown and sketchy to me. There was parallel parking near the Capitol building. Interstate 64 was also very close to this vicinity.

I’ve visited many state capitols in the country, this is the more impressive one. The State Capitol building is facing the Kanawha River. When we visited, the Capitol is under renovation, so unfortunately, we couldn’t see the rotunda inside the building and the outside dome has scaffolding. What’s interesting is that all 3 branches are hosted in the building. The Governor’s office/reception area is open to the public. It’s beautiful. We visited both the House and the Senate. Both are in adjournment. While visiting the Senate Chamber, we met the Republican Senator Greg Boso and had a chat. Interesting experience.
On the ground there is also the Veteran’s Memorial dedicated the West Virginians who died in the First and Second World War, Korean and Vietnam War.
Parking is in a large lot, free on weekends and metered during the week.
The free State Museum is also onsite. Unfortunately, we were there on Monday and the museum was closed. All in all, a pleasant visit for 1-2 hours.

This is a beautiful building. Old and lots of history around it. Really great learning about the history of the building and reading about Lincoln. The grounds are also really spacious and beautiful. I didn't go inside but the outside was great. There is also a great swing photo op.

Great architecture in the capitol along with exhibits and working offices. Neat photo opportunity involves setting up the perfect dome shot.

Wow! What a beautiful building! We were able to call early and get into the last tour for the day (3:30), which was very informative! We're from TX, visiting our daughter in grad school across the river at UofC, so the history is fascinating!! Make sure to go early enough to check out the Cultural Museum outside the Capitol, as we didn't have time to really enjoy it all! And you can't beat the scenery-not even in Austin!

Outside is rather impressive but the inside was disappointingly plain. Couldn't get a tour as advertised because they had only one person working and they had to stay at the information counter. However, we had to wait on anyone to come because they had just given the only tour of the day. Tours were supposed to be more frequent during the day. Given a nice booklet of pictures and information instead. Might call ahead if you want a tour. Not plainly marked how to to get in the building. Put plenty of quarters in the parking meter if you want to go to the State museum on the same complex and it is worthwhile. Long walk back if you don't do it.

I heard the top of the Capitol was real gold... I still am not sure but it truly looks like it is painted in gold. Amazingly beautiful.

We drove here to see this historic building. The grounds were pretty, and I am sure when the golden dome us refinished, it will be pretty again, but right now it is under tarps and can't be enjoyed.

Not much to really see inside the capitol but interesting to walk through and point out various rooms. Grounds are well kept. Beautiful building and the location is perfect as you can see it driving along the interstate.

With little kids you can probably get away with spending maybe a half hour inside. Definitely worth a visit as the building is gorgeous. Certainly allow a bit longer if you want to walk around the grounds outside.

Today we went to the WV State Capitol Building. We walked across the street also and found a great path along the riverbank. You could see part of the University of Charleston and some beautiful houses. The grounds as everyone mentioned were clean and easy to walk. Fountain on the east side and statue and parking on the west wing. Next to this beautiful building is the governor's mansion which we also walked pass. You can not visit it but still nice location to walk around. The capitol building all visitors must enter on the west wing side-look for sign. Go to screening and walk all the way around. We saw door signs for the state auditor, sec of state, treasurer, etc. They do not charge admission and the marble is amazing. I was impressed that the building was open on Saturday and even parking is free that day. Other days they have meters, bring quarters. Enough spots for handicap parking also. No drop off close though. Rotunda has amazing light fixture worth the walk. Not many places to sit, remember this is offices in the working. Also go across the street to museum, gift shop and theater. Not open on Sunday or Monday but another freebie. Recommend

Many things are overlooked in West Virginia, but the State Capitol is not one of them. Possibly one of the most beautiful capitol buildings in the country, the gold dome is the perfect addition to the gorgeous mountain landscape. Lots of rich history too.

I say "unexpectedly" because visitors tend to under rate West Virginia, but the capitol (part of a multi-building complex which includes the Culture Center) is a gem. It was designed by Cass Gilbert, who also designed the capitol in Washington, DC. The surrounding statuary is marvelous - especially the one of Abraham Lincoln on the south front. If you go, wear shock-absorbing shoes - the floors are marble. And be careful on the stairs! There is a cafeteria, which in my experience has ranged from very good to mediocre to closed. At the moment, I am told it is back to being good. If you have a camera with a long lens, shoot for the detail way up high on the building. Public access is now restricted to two entry points with metal detectors.

We visited the West Virginia Capitol Complex in Charleston last week. The grounds were beautiful and a nice place to walk around and dog friendly. We went inside and there is free tours during the week. We were there on a Saturday and you can walk around on your own . Well worth a visit.

The building is beautiful the grounds are beautiful. There was a festival happening so I would say it was family friendly. The building itself is an amazing work of architecture.

My reserve unit conducted a change of command ceremony in courtyard of the capitol. Beautiful background for a military ceremony and I really enjoyed walking around to the various museums. Worth a trip! Parking is available on site, but most is metered and they ticket aggressively! Bring change or park somewhere else!

A great place to tour when in town. Walking around the grounds and inside and just admiring the architecture. A beautiful place in Charleston. Would be a great place for a picnic!

I came here to visit a friend who live in Saint Albans. When I saw the golden dome like state capital , I decide to make a visit. It s surrounded by the park like environment , very relax , nice river view .

As noted many times in previous reviews, this is a great capital building and worth a visit if you are in town.

We stopped in for 90 minutes and did a self-tour. Just a beautiful building that words can't describe. Staff were very friendly and helpful. It's a must see for any West Virginian.

We toured the grounds of the Capitol beautiful gardens and a very beautiful building, Unfortunately the Museum was closed (no hours posted on the building)

The self guided walking tour is so interesting you can pick up the literature in the rotunda and entertain yourself for hours on an afternoon. West Virginia is blessed with one of Cass Gilbert's most amazing feats of architecture. Yes our nation's capital is beautiful in Washington DC (Also by Cass Gilbert), But I do firmly believe that Charleston West Virginia has one most beautiful state Capitol buildings in our country. As you walk in the beautiful halls you will see portraits of previous governors and senators. During select state celebrations there are even guided tours. You will find a snack shop and a cafeteria downstairs open during Monday through Friday. While visiting the state capital do not forget to walk the grounds to see some amazing statues and a beautiful memorial to our country's soldiers.

I have been to several capitol buildings and this was the most unfriendly one. There was supposedly free parking for visitors in the garage but you had to have a code to access it, so I wound up paying a meter and still had to walk several blocks. There are no signs for the entrance which is on the side. There is no information of where to go after security check. Finally finding the information desk there were two half empty bottles of water sitting at the two stations but no one manning the post or any information to when they might be back. I finally ran into a tour group of two people on my self tour of the capitol but after hanging around them for a while was not invited to join or even acknowledged of my presence. If you plan to visit this capitol building be prepared to be on your own and ready for a self guided tour because the people there are unfriendly and uninformative.

I've been to the capitals of almost all of the 48 contiguous states, and in most of those towns or cities I've at least driven past the capitol building. Some are very plain and others more ornate. A handful (Georgia, Vermont, Colorado come to mind) also have gold-leaf domes, but none is more striking than West Virginia's.
The Cass Gilbert-designed main building along with its east and west wings is considered by many visitors to be more beautiful than the nation's capitol in Washington, D.C.; though the general layout, including the dome, is quite similar, there is definitely something about the West Virginia Capitol, with giant oak trees on the surrounding campus, the Kanawha River on the south front, and tree-covered hills to the north, that makes this place worthy of photos and videos to remember it by.

Breathtaking! We saw this at night and it was beautiful. A very nice drive along the river gets you there. Some beautiful architecture from late 1800's and early 1900's along the way. A great place to visit!

We visited the Capitol during the weekend so it was quiet and most of the offices were closed. I think a guided tour on the week days will be the best. The building itself is great so as the surrounding museum, buildings and the Veteran Memorial. A must see if you are visiting Charlston.

I walked around the front of the Capital building and learned from the signs and statues about the building and history. Beautiful location for photos and across the street from a river walk.

Not the most interesting capitol I have ever visited. The building is impressive but there are no exhibits related to the history of the state of West Virginia.

We have not been inside but we have driven and walked past it a hundred times and it never gets old. The gold dome makes it stand out from any vantage point.

The West Virginia capitol is a beautiful building with lots of marble and special features. It has a unique dome that is blue with gold leaf. It was opened in 1932, so it doesn't have as much of a historical feel as some state capitols, but it is well worth a visit.

Beautiful, one of the tallest domed capitals in the US, taller than the US capital. Stunningly beautiful inside. Took the guided tour. The tour was ok, informative, but hard to hear in the great halls. I recommend going to the Beckley Coal Exhibit and the State Museum first to learn more about the history and culture of the state and then to the Capital; I think you get a better appreciation of the capital building knowing more about the history and culture instead of trying to learn it there.

The Capitol grounds in Charleston is beautiful and the area around it just as nice. Just watch your back a little as you wander onto the side streets. People very friendly.

Enjoyed our visit to the State House of West Virginia. Beautiful grounds and located across from the State Cultural Building. Statue of Abraham Lincoln in front of building.
Beautiful rotunda and inside!! State residents will enjoy the hallway showing paintings of the governors.
Open door policy to the governor's office. Beautiful office entry with chandeliers.
Governor's mansion next door!!
A must place to visit if you are in the area.

Very good place to visit outstanding war memorial on grounds and you can go to gallery and watch legislature in action

We toured the Capitol of West Virginia in Charleston. This is actually the 5th building, completed in 1832. The dome and rotunda are closed for renovations which began this past January and are anticipated to take two years to complete. We got to go into the Governor's Reception Room, where Press Conferences, Bill signings, and meetings are held. We looked in both the Senate and House Chambers with their beautiful chandeliers (pics don't do them justice) and the ceiling in the lobbies are covered in these florettes representing the three state trees: Oak, Maple, Magnolia. These and the chandeliers were my favorite features here.

I will start off by saying parking was not fun. There are metered or pay lots all around, but still not a joy. You enter through the public entrance at the back and can go by the visitor's information booth - but they didn't have any self-guided tour maps. I walked around aimlessly taking in the building and artifacts. They do have guided tours, but I didn't arrive close enough to take one.

Another fun visit to another nice state capitol (after having visited the ones in Sacramento, DC, Raleigh, Tallahassee, Columbia and Salt Lake City) - the gold-leaf dome is especially impressive. The Charleston capitol was under renovation at the time of our visit, so some areas had scaffoldings in them. Still, we had a fun time visiting the governor's office (among other places), where we got free West Virginia bumper stickers and pencils. We didn't take any tour, just strolled around on our own.

We have visited several State Capitols and this one in West Virginia is one of the most attractive. This place is a great reflection of the people of the state. The river running in front of the capitol really adds to the overall atmosphere of the place.

The state building had beautiful architecture. It sounds like you need to make arrangements in advance for tours but self guided tours work. The Supreme Court Room was not open but the Head of Security opened it for us. Beautiful!! He was so kind and helpful. I made the comment to my husband that I hope the people in our State Capitol are as nice to tourist as they are in W. VA.

I would have rated this place terrible but it is the state capitol. Where is the security to keep people from making this place smell like urine. The only other place i have been that smells like strong urine is in DC. And what is up with the workers not finishing the gilding on the dome? Who is in charge of these people. We have one of the most beautiful capitols in the nation and for it to be disrespected like this. What a shame. Won't be coming here again.

Haven't been to the West Virginia state capital in over a decade. In town for a couple of days and decided to go by. If you've never been here it is worth the visit. It is a majestic, grand structure. Designed by Cass Elliott. The building is huge as are the grounds. Other state capital buildings pale by comparison. The grounds are tree covered and beatiful. If you're ever in town, make time to swing by - you will not be disappointed.

Glad we included a stop at the Capitol. Beautiful building with very friendly staff. The free tour was great - informative and educational.

There was a festival going on when we were visiting. The capital itself wasn’t open but the grounds were gorgeous.

This Capitol is one of the most beautiful that I have been inside. The interior is something to see with wood from the state, marble and chandeliers. The grounds are beautifully maintained and used for some festivals. The dome can be seen for miles around.

This is a great state capitol building. While security concerns nationwide have caused greater examination of visitors, any tourist can get in easily and enjoy the beautiful building. There are many good displays in the halls and rotunda, and everyone --- legislators, office workers, police, and lobbyists --- are very helpful and friendly. Elected officials....Secretary of State Mac Warner comes to mind.... are most welcoming and personally give tours around "the people's house". The building and grounds offer beautiful views of the river and city. This is a great place to visit and just wander around.

We were in Charleston for the night on our way to Charlotte. We went to the Capitol to see some history. Parking cost 50 cents for an hour. Meters take only change. The rest of the visit was free. The museum was great. Our family was the only family so we were able to enjoy it all to ourselves. Lots of history and the kids all had a great time. I would go again and I suggest at least 2 hours to see everything. Everyone we encountered were polite and very helpful.

My mother and toured the Capital building Sunday while passing through. It is a beautiful building and the people who gave us a mini tour were very friendly.

I always enjoy looking at this when we take an East coast trip South from Ohio. It's such a pretty U.S. Capitol building! It's great even to view from the road. The gold dome made with real gold leaf and copper is the main attraction!

We wish the exterior dome hadn't been all wrapped up and the interior closed off to the public because of badly needed repairs to it. We were able to go inside a courtroom and wander around the halls, but we didn't really spend that much time there.

The Gold dome is actually painted with gold leaf and very unique in that it stands on the bank of the Great Kanawha River and where it can be viewed from the river or Interstate 64 which is just a few blocks away.

The capital is in a nice complex that has other buildings, including the governor's mansion. It is very nice looking.

Did not have time to go in as I arrived on Sunday evening, but just to walk around the outside and admire this beautiful building and the statue out front is worth the trip. Not to missed if you are in Charleston.

After the security check we went to the information desk for a guided tour. Unfortunately the rotunda is closed because of restoration for the next two years. Alex, our guide did a good job and answered all our questions. You will see the senate and the chamber of the representatives but not the supreme court.

Road trip! This was our 29th Capitol visited. The building is beautiful. Unfortunately, the dome is undergoing restoration at this time. The exterior of the dome is currently somewhat visible, but were told that the dome and the scaffolding is about to be covered in plastic and the interior space under the dome is entirely blocked off. We did a self guided tour because the tour guide evidently didn't want to do a tour for just me and my wife. We arrived about 9:15 for the 9:30 tour mentioned on the website, but were told instead that we could join a school group of 4th graders at 10:30. The person at the tour desk was less that friendly. This is only the second time that we have encountered a tour desk attendant that was on the surly side. We were lucky enough to run into the head security guy for the Supreme Court who unlocked the chambers and turned on the lights for us. He then spent about 15 or 20 minutes talking to us about the supreme court. He saved the day for us.

Made a quick visit. Much like any other Capitol building. Did a self guided tour although they do guided tours if you want.

I've visited here twice (primarily to photograph the interior, and especially, the interior of the soaring dome high over the rotunda)---but I've not yet taken a guided tour -- I think it would be a great option, to have the building explained thoroughly. But as a self-guided visitor (aiming on photography) it is a gem. A Cass Gilbert design (also did the US Supreme Court in DC) it is stately and elegant clad in marble, with a soaring dome (gilded outside, and slightly higher than the US Capitol!) fitted with a 2-ton crystal chandelier inside. Set along the river (the more attractive part of the grounds, probably, vs. the interstate side) it is a proud and handsome capitol building. Be sure to bring a telephoto and a super-wide-angle lens, if you're after photos of the impressive rotunda space.

Another beautiful State house on our US tour. It’s definitely worth a visit both inside and around at the outside. Spend at least two hours for the visit.

Incredibly beautiful, Cass Gilbert designed this building to be an impressive representation of the people of West Virginia. The entire structure is covered in marble and carvings. It is full of history and tells the story of West Virginia's government. Definitely a must see if you are visiting the state.

The campus is immense and well manicured. With the Capitol's lawn, memorials, and museum, it definitely has the feel of Washington D.C. Inside the Capitol building are several, giant crystal chandeliers, gigantic arches, and beautiful Italian marble columns. The Capitol's dome ranks at the top for the most picturesque in the nation. A must see!

The actual capitol building is by far one of the prettiest I have ever saw. That's real gold at the top of the dome. Grounds are large and the little squirrels will come right up to you. Inside the capitol building is just as beautiful too.

We used this as our half way stopping point on our drive to North Carolina. I always have enjoyed it from the highway going South, but this time we got more up close.

This is a must if your in the w. Virginia area bring a blanket some sandwiches and enjoy the view of the Kanawha River. While your kids run up and down the capitol stairs make sure you have your camera handy.

After looking at TripAdvisor for things to do in Charleston my family and I decided to go to the capitol. We went on a Sunday. We did find where to go in to the building, kind of by accident. Once inside and through security we said we are hear for a tour. The security guard said, "Have at er" and pointed down the hall. I guess I kind of assumed that there would maybe be some self guided tour brochures or something. We just wandered around the empty halls for a bit and left. The halls were beautiful, but I would have liked to know some of the history.

we were there on a Saturday and they don't have official tours then, just we walked around inside and it is a truly beautiful building.

The only cost is the metered parking. You'll have to go through airport-type security screening, but the security people were very kind and offered help with directions. The rotunda is awesome and the 30 minute free tour was interesting and informative. Good exhibits while you're waiting for the tour to begin, also.

The West Virginia State Capitol is one of the most beautiful in the United States! The exterior of the classical-styled building is made of limestone, topped by a magnificent 293-foot dome covered with 23 1/2 karat gold leaf. The interior is decorated with nine varieties of marble and there's an amazing 4,000# chandelier in the center. The black walnut desks in the Legislature are the originals, built in 1932.
You'll find an informative video on the lower level of the WV Capitol, but you can also schedule a guided tour by phoning 304-558-4839. Next door to the WV Capitol is the Culture and History Center where you'll find the wonderful WV State Museum with loads and loads of interactive exhibits. Don't miss it! There's also a gift shop there where you can buy hand-blown WV glass and other locally made souvenirs.
Make sure you walk around the West Virginia Capitol Complex grounds because they're beautifully maintained. There's a great statue of President Abraham Lincoln out front. He created the State of West Virginia through a proclamation during the Civil War. You'll also see a statue of West Virginia native, General Andrew Jackson, and memorials to both Union and Confederate soldiers. If you head to the rear of the capitol, you'll find a replica of the Liberty Bell and a bust of West Virginia native, Booker T. Washington, founder of the Tuskegee Institute. The state's war memorial is also on the grounds, honoring WV's fallen from WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

So....the website may say "open" the day after Thanksgiving, rest assured it is not! Still, we were able to wander around inside - no sight of security, rotunda closed for repairs, and legislative chambers locked. Great grounds, however. Not about to return to Charleston, WV, for sure (that's another story) so will have to wait for the virtual tour!

Our quest to see every state capitol brought us here briefly. Beautiful building on a great setting on the river. Open area with easy access form highway and convenient metered parking on one side. No problems stopping and walking around plaza getting our pictures on a perfect clear and sunny fall day.

We didn't go in but, my son and grand daughter pretended they were in the Rocky movie and ran up the LONG set of steps...lol It's right along the river which is very pretty.

We called ahead to verify they would be open on Saturday of memorial day weekend.
So we knew their would be no guided tours but it was open for visits, however we called twice we could have used a mention that the Rotunda was closed. Also there was a bluegrass festival outside, that day. Give it a mention over the phone.
The grounds themselves are quite nice, like a lovely park. The building itself is nice and worth a look even without rotunda, but Rotunda is obviously main stage. The next door museum is a must as its downstairs exhibit was excellent. Not sure what they do normally upstairs as it was taken over by the festival. Schedule an hour at least for this little gem.

It was a little confusing as they only had 1 door for the public (this was a Saturday), but after walking around the building we found (ok we asked at the museums across from it) it. I was surprised we had to go though a metal detector, but it is a working government building. The building is larger than it appears, both the east and west wings add to it. And it is not as old as I would have thought. I was surprised by all the state offices (governor...) in the building and a little disappointed both chamber balconies were closed. I would have like more history, I had to Google to find it was the 35th state admitted to the union. The grounds are awesome, there are many monuments scattered around. It is worth a trip (and it is free)

We did no go in as the parking was a huge issue! However kids and myself jumped out as husband went around in car. We grabbed a few pictures in front of the capital which is beautiful! The swing was neat and we learned as we were heading out of town about the huge swings, I wish they would make a trifold with maps like a scavenger hunt. Also, the West Virginia outline of the state is to close to the swing, they are great photo moments, but you can’t get one without the other with the capital as a backdrop. However parking all over is an issue p, could be expensive. The homeless are at every turn, but unlike Clarksville, TN they do not approach you and did not make me feel uncomfortable with my or the children’s safety at all! Would have loved to go inside as the outside is amazing!

When going inside the various buildings are are security check points where you have to go through a metal detector as well as your purse or personal items going through the x ray screeners. Personell are polite and help to direct you to what area's you would like to see. Lot's of history around the capitol building itself. There was some construction going on in some area's.

My wife and I stopped there while we were in town for a Garth Brooks concert. This is a very iconic and stately building. The capital building faces the river and has a wonderful statue of Abraham Lincoln in front to greet you. This is a must see. Please take 30 minutes and at least visit the grounds.

Huge and it was interesting seeing the Lincoln statue. There is current construction going on so you can't really see the entire thing but it's still worth seeing.

Spent about 3 hours touring the grounds and inside. We enjoyed ourselves, stop by the gift shop for all things WVa.

Massive, impressive and stunning, this gold domed, marble giant will really impress. Many beautiful statues of Booker T. Washington, Lincoln and more. We were stunned by its magnificence. After going through the Capitol, we walked over to the museum gift shop for some West Virginia souvenirs. Equally impressive, but we didn't have time to view it ... next time we will.

We love visiting state capitols so I wanted to be sure to see this one. I was at first disappointed that it was undergoing remodeling of the dome but glad we went inside because it was very pretty. Upstairs the Senate and House were both open to the public and they had beautiful chandeliers. Each room had a large great room before you entered it with enormous black and white historical murals. Also, I loved the old fashioned doors and doorknobs reminding me of the 1950s or earlier. The Governor’s Office had its door wide open as if to send a message all were welcome! We enjoyed it!

I love WV and it’s state capital but I am giving a low rating due to the fact that I do not feel like it belongs to the people anymore. I hate the fact there a tight security checks. If you do not mind that it is a lovely structure to visit.

Don't miss if you are close by. I was lucky enough to tag along with a school group on their tour. The rotunda is spectacular.

The Capitol Building itself has been called the one of the top 12 most magnificent state capitols. I believe if you are travelling through WV it is a must stop. Beautiful grounds and multiple places to explore (and squirrels to feed). Great for kids and families alike.
WV Cultural Center, WV Museum and Veterans' Memorial are on the grounds of the Capitol. By the way early spring when all of the trees are in bloom the grounds are beautiful...
A must see @ the Capitol - made of Czechoslovakian crystal, the great chandelier that hangs in the rotunda of the WV state capitol. The chandelier puts out light equal to 15,000 candles. It is 8 feet in diameter and weighs nearly 3,000 pounds. It has 96 light bulbs inside and around 50,000 hand cut crystals.
Not very many places to eat nearby - but down Washington Street you have the Town Center other eating establishments...

The State Capitol is very pretty with the dome along the river. However, there was not one at the tour desk for over an hour. And there were no tours as advertised cause the tour lady did not come in that day. The Supreme Court room was very nice.

Since the Republicans have the majority votes now, they have made it that one has to go through security to enter and only 2 doors are available for entry...East or West Wing. This is our State Capitol and they actually close doors on certain days not to allow entry! ??????

This capital state dome really stands out in this picturesque location. Lots of parking, free tour. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Museum was informative and well laid out, also free to visit. Great area to walk around.

The capitol was beautiful on the outside, but the rotunda was closed for repair. The website said there were tours on Saturdays, but there were not. Another family was also there for a tour. We were told by a capitol employee that there are no tours on Saturdays, so that needs to be fixed.

Walking through the Capitol building was a wonderful experience. Walking down the marble hallways looking at the artwork on the walls. Seeing the young children on tour with their classmates learning all they can. It’s definitely a place that you want to stop in and see.

Beautiful building inside and out. Stopped by on a Sunday and after viewing the memorial, we went to State Capitol. The public entrance was easy to find, clearly labeled. Being Sunday- there were no tours, but security let us in to look around.
We were not the only ones there. 6 other people also were walking about and looking at the pictures, the impressive marble, the Governor's office doors.
Do wish they offered tours on Sunday- seeing as that in that the 1 hour we were there- we saw so many other people come through.

Great place for adults and children alike to find out all about this beautiful state Well worth the side trip. Have passed this building for many years and never knew the wonders inside, the museum is a must

We did the tour of the capital building because we really love the history associated with the building. The tour was pretty informative and nicely put together. The building is under construction so not everything was there to view.

This beautiful, historic building is currently undergoing a renovation of its rotunda and dome but don't let that stop you from seeing it. The marble halls, portraits, Legislature and Senate chambers are well worth the visit. You're pretty much free to roam at will and there are maps at the visitors desk that will help you get around. If you can sit in the gallery during a session be sure to do that too.

The state capitol, located downtown on the Kanawha River, is worth the trip for its beauty. It was closed during our visit so we were unable to tour the inside.

Unfortunately we weren't able to see the Rotunda because it's being remodeled and will take 2 years before it's completed.

Beautiful building. Worth seeing inside and taking a walk around the grounds. Wonderful statue of Abe Lincoln in front on the river side.

It is said that Cass Gilbert perfected the beauty of his buildings in WV before designing the U.S. Supreme Court. I believe it. The State Capitol is a group of buildings that include the Main Building and the East and West Wings, all physically connected so that all 3 branches of government, the Legislative, Executive and Judicial branches can conduct the state's business essentially under one roof. There are other buildings on campus, but the majestic and elegant Main Building should not be missed. You can peek into the chambers of the House of Delegates and the Senate, and there's a spectacular light fixture in the dome rotunda that according to the legislative website "consists of a graduated imported crystal forming a ball eight feet in diameter, suspended on an appropriate specially designed chain."
The Main Building is crowned by a dome of majestic proportion which is covered in authentic gold leaf.
Interestingly, at its birth, the wings of the complex and then the central domed unit were each contracted for separately. Each was paid for before beginning the next phase. Built for less than $9.5 million, we have certainly gotten our money's worth! It is a magnificent place to visit and tours can be arranged.
Also on campus can be found the Culture Center which houses the State Museum. Another must see on your visit!

The museum and the docents who were available to educate and shRe stories about early WV were really feel full. I enjoyed mt visit!

This is not only easy to find, it is hard to miss. It is the State Capitol and dominated the skyline along the river. It is the building with the large dome in the middle of the state capitol complex located Kanawha Blvd E. There is street parking and a parking garage off of Greenbrier street. It is a short walk past the Veteran’s memorial and the West Virginia State Museum. I would highly recommend paying your respects to the former and spending a good amount of time visiting the latter. We entered through the West entrance. You go through a security checkpoint and then can go to see both chambers or the various offices of the building. It is a beautiful building in the style of many state capitals. We were lucky to arrive when the crystal light for the central rotunda was at ground level and the chandeliers in both chambers were being replaced. Around the rotunda are several display cases showing sights for the various places in the state. There was an information booth on the north side of the rotunda. If you are new to the area, they can give you ideas of things to do and see for the state. The staff was very friendly and it is a wonderful working capitol building.

The capitol is a magnificent structure - filled with history. And, it has a gold dome! Beautifully situated, overlooking The Kanawha River.

You cannot visit the State Capitol of West Virginia without being in awe of the beautiful architecture, both inside and out. And of course the one of a kind, outstanding gold dome!

Great! Must visit if in Charleston. Residents and visitors would find the museum interesting and full of history.

I was able to walk through the entire building from one wing to the rotunda under the Golden Dome and the end wing which offers the governors art exhibit of young residents' art.
The helpful people at the I formation desk oriented me to see the Supreme Court and to observe sessions in the Senate.
Accessible restrooms in each floor.
Paid van accessible parking in main lot

The building is beautiful. Architecture and layout of building is as nice as any capitols we visited. We could not get a guided tour but there was enough information available to self guide.

We took the nice walk along the waterside to visit the State Capital on the Sunday morning, but on arrival to the Capital building we discovered that it was closed!!
So we decided to return the following day.
But it was also closed on a Monday!
The gift shop was open but everything else was closed.
We were only in town for two days so never got to visit it properly, but did visit the outside grounds and surrounding area.
Yep, it's a Capitol all right!
The most interesting parts about West Virginia's Capitol are visible from the outside - the distinctive gold dome (which really is beautiful) and the statue of Lincoln walking at night (which isn't an original, I don't think). Otherwise it's really just a functioning Capitol building where lots and lots of people work. I never thought about it being a tourist attraction.
