Beautiful Falls! Get enough time at Upper and Lower

By Denise M |

We visited the falls at Pictured Rocks prior to coming to Tahquamenon and I have to say, the falls here were the most impressive we saw and well worth the 2 hour drive. We stopped at the Upper Falls first and have to say we made a mistake in taking the trail that takes you between the Upper and Lower Falls. We started around noon and there were no shuttles running - by the time we went to the Lower Falls we were too tired and anticipating the hike back to enjoy the area! If I could redo it, I would start at the Lower Falls and explore the island trail that takes you to different waterfall viewing spots, then hike over to the Upper Falls and either hike or take a shuttle back. Nevertheless I'm glad we went, but wish we'd done it a different way.

There were restaurants (including a brewery with medicore beer) and a gift shop by the Upper Falls, and I believe just a gift shop at the Lower Falls.

Very much worth the drive

By Kathy R |

We made the hour and a half drive from Christmas, Michigan to Paradise, Michigan to walk the trails and enjoy the falls. It was well worth the drive, we were in the UP to see Pictured Rocks and didn't want to miss seeing these falls. There are upper and lower falls so make sure you see both. The lower falls have a paved trail for most of it and while there are stairs it is an enjoyable trip even if you can't do the stairs. We brought our two small dogs and carried and walked them, lots and lots of dogs were there. You can get into the water in the lower falls if you follow the paved path and wooden walk way.

I looked at some of the reviews and was a bit worried about going because they noted how crowed the park was. We didn't experience that, there was a bit of a line, maybe 5 cars, to get into both the upper and lower falls but it moved quickly. You don't have to take the shuttle to get between the falls. You can pay for entering at either and then drive the 3 miles to the other falls. That's what we did but you can also walk there.

We spent about 3 and a half hours there but could have stayed longer if we brought something to wear to get in the water and towels. Maybe bring swim shoes, the rocks are a little slippery.

Beautiful place

By romanpiekosz |

I was visiting the upper falls during October's changing colors.
It has given additional beauty to this place.
The falls are great and big(Upper one is the largest in Michigan State).
You can feel the power of falling water…if you go downstairs(94 steps) to the platform.
It’s worth! Don’t miss the opportunity!
Small advice for the photographers…..in October if there is a sunny day, the worst time to visit this place is late afternoon(the time I was).
The sun operates straight to your face, so falls are “covered” by the strong sun light. My guess, the best time for nice pictures are the morning hours.
I recommend this place.

Nature at its best!

By Sarah C |

Definitely worth a visit! We did the Lower Falls first. Easy walkways and nice views from multiple places. Drove to the Upper Falls and once again amazing views. Nice paved paths or boardwalks to see the Falls.

A must water experience!

By Matthew S |

Amazing views and waterfall experience. We enjoyed the lower falls where we can explore the river and falls. Great experience but watch your step in the water!

Beautiful falls!

By Krr1975 |

These are beautiful falls! They call them “root beer” falls cause they do look like root beer. Easy 1/4 mile walk to the closest point to the falls. There are 2 other viewing areas before you get to where you can get the closest viewing area. It’s a nice paved path. If you want to get to the closest platform, it does take 94 steps to get down to it and what goes down, must go up! However steps are well done and there are platforms in between sections of the steps.

Nice Walk and Beautiful Falls

By Denise P |

We absolutely loved this walk. The path is easy and there are benches to rest on. It was quite busy with a lot of people but there is plenty of room to pass people. Actually, we were the ones getting passed because we just took our time and enjoyed all of the beauty. The trees, the landscape, and the awesome falls. This was a treasure to find, and we highly recommend a visit.

Falls visit

By Pam C |

Very worth the drive. So pretty. Great shops. Beautiful falls. Lots of cute doggies. Great paths. Would definitely visit again. Can row across the river. Great day trip. Make sure to go to both upper and lower falls.

Lovely Autumn Day

By joynel48 |

We went yesterday from our Traverse City home where it is not quite peak color yet. Up there it is peak to slightly past peak but still Beautiful. Worth the trip. Great weather. Can take wheelchairs to viewing area. We had never been before despite living in Michigan. Thoroughly loved it. Had a nice meal and a beer at the upper falls. Great day!

Stunningly Beautiful Place

By Debbie V |

We visited from the U.K. on 17/09/24.
The Lower & Upper Falls were easy to access. Plenty of car parking, and impressed that the area was litter free and had toilets too.
The trees were just beginning to change colour, this is a stunningly beautiful sight to see. We drove 2 hours to get there and it was well worth it!
I would highly recommend a trip here.

Great place to viait

By Misty B |

Beautiful falls, not too far to walk. Beautiful pls e to take pictures. Highly recommend. Some stairs. We went to the upper falls.

Gorgeous!

By Brooklyn2213 |

We did the hike from lower falls to upper falls with our dog it says it's 4 miles but overall it's closer to 5 to see the lookouts for the falls. The trail was well kept and clean as were both areas for near the falls. We had some beers and food at the Upper Falls before catching the shuttle to take us back to the lower falls where our car was. Dogs are allowed on the shuttle, it was $20 for 2 of us and our dog. The Upper Falls are very ADA friendly as well! Definitely a must see in the UP!

Stunning!

By Kristin |

Wow!!! This place is absolutely stunning! We came to the UP for the famous Mackinac Island, but Tahquamenon was the highlight of our trip. Great hiking trails, amazing views, all the fall colors and updated amenities. Highly recommend!!

Worth the trip - Yes! visit Tahquamenon Falls

By George614 |

We actually visited Tahquamenon Falls twice on our recent visit to the UP. Our first trip there, we went to the lower falls first and then "hiked" to the upper falls. They do warn you, that it is difficult and time consuming, but the hike seemed a lot longer than four miles, and it is more of a hike than a walk. And yes, you will get bit by whatever is hanging out along that trail. It is worth the hike, but be aware, it will take you the 2.5 hours or longer to complete the hike. (But they do offer a shuttle to take you back to the lower falls - it is pricey - but - you sort of have no choice, if the hike takes you too long and you need to get back to your car at the lower falls)
That is why we went back a second time - to play in the falls. So the return trip, we stayed at the lower falls, and did rent the row boat to see the falls close up and yes, play in the water. The $20 for the row boat (family rate) -was worth it. You can play in the water for as long as you want. So yes, if you have the time. I would hike from the lower falls to the upper falls one day. And if you are staying up in the UP longer, go a second trip back to the falls, stay at the lower falls and just play all day in the water. its a cool spot to enjoy and take in nature. We (all four of us) recommend it.

Beautiful State Park

By Mary Beth C |

The park has several waterfalls and two main parking areas to walk to view. The is an entrance fee that covers all the area. Each area has several places to view the falls and some are accessible. There is also a gift shop. It's a lovely place to stop and stretch and visit when traveling the UP.

It is beautiful!

By Wendy B |

The parking and the falls are close together. There's a nice paved walkway. There was also a nice concession area and shop.

Fun place to check out the upper peninsula.

By rockazrealtor |

Well maintained park with clean bathrooms, food and a couple of shops. There is a walkway between the upper and lower falls. We decided to drive to each one. Spend a few hours next to the falls and feel at one with nature.

Return trip to the Falls

By A Koos |

A very beautiful place! I have been there both with and without children, I would recommend the trip either way. Be prepared to climb stairs to the lookouts for a closer view, definitely worth the steps!

Must see!

By witchbroomstick |

Nice place to enjoy Michigan's Upper Peninsula! Stop at both the Lower and Upper falls, as they are so close to each other.

Amazing time!

By ThonS |

We went on July 4 and had a great time! Was less busy than it was last year on a weekend at the end of July. We started at the lower and did the hike to the upper so we could eat afterwards. Loved the hike!! Take mosquito spray, water, snacks and wear tennis shoes!

100 years ago would have loved to visit

By LenHarris |

parking lot full. anthill like..was middle of week and a long drive.
disappointed. Was middle of week and not during peak time. had to wait in line to get people to move so could take photos. Was beautiful and seriously overcrowded.

Must See In The U.P.

By SteveSly |

If you are in the U.P. of Michigan this is a must see attraction. Make sure that you go to both the upper and lower falls areas.

Beautiful!!!

By TravelingGirl0809 |

My husband and I walked the trails to see the lower and upper falls. The views were SPECTACULAR! Beautiful and would highly recommend a visit. Plus, there’s a brewery at the end of the trails to eat a meal and relax in a pretty setting. Cool place! A must see!

Be sure to do upper and lower falls!!

By Sondra R |

This was a great stop. Be sure to do upper and lower!! Upper is a quick view whereas there is alot more to see with the lower trail and a lot of smaller falls. They have an adorable gift shop as well.

Amazing fall colors

By Terri G |

Visited the lower calls first, saving the 96 stairs of the upper falls for the end. My friend with asthma was able to handle the steps without using at any of the convenient rest benches. The beautiful falls were even more awe-inspiring - and photogenic - when surrounded by the multitude of autumn colors.

Worth the trip!

By Monica2941 |

Beautiful falls! My 2 teens, husband and I decided to walk the 4 miles to the upper falls. For not being hikers, we made it ok. Not sure I'd do it again but it was fun! We took the shuttle back to the car so we didnt have to walk back. $17/first person and $3 add'l which is way to high but had no choice because we werent walking back and it started raining. Overall good day, be prepared LOTS of walking and stairs if you plan to get close. Michigan is so beautiful!

Great waterfalls. Should be on your bucket list

By Rick |

Great state park. Should visit both Lower and Upper Falls. At the Lower Falls, I highly recommend renting the row boat and making the circuit of the island in the middle of the falls. Even better views than the mainland. The place is Pure Michigan.

A required park as you travel the UP

By Itinerant_Foodies |

We went to the park solely for the falls but the park areas themselves were very nice with easy walks to the falls. The falls, both lower and upper, are required visits. The color of the water due to the iron makes for a unique experience and picture.

Incredible scenery!

By pconrad02 |

Three day camping experience at the lower falls campground. We were in the " high number " sites. The sites the are nicely spaced out, very wooded with new fire pits. The bath house/ restrooms are in need of a refurbishment, but the visitor center is new and beautiful. The falls are awesome and the hike from the lower to the upper falls is well worth it, with a shuttle back if you don't want to hike back. Highly recommended!

Beautiful falls

By MLB1221 |

We started our visit by going to the Upper Falls. The falls themselves are large and beautiful with several vantages points for pictures and observations. The trails were well maintained and marked. The only real issue was mosquitos were heavy in spots so be warned and have repellent with you. The lower falls were smaller but just as beautiful It has nice trails leading to it as well.

Just breathtaking

By Erin W |

We always love to visit the falls when in the area. The Upper Falls are our favorite. A “must do” if you’re up that way. The sound of the River, the sound of the falls, being in nature... it’s so lovely.

Beautiful Nature

By Leslie |

I have wanted to go here since I moved back to Michigan. We finally made it this year, I'm in love with this place, I love waterfalls and nature. The bugs were a bit annoying but that's to be expected. Our dogs were welcome, and we didn't do the stairs, but we saw plenty and the falls are amazing. I will be back!

Nice walk

By Beach1001 |

This is a nice place to visit, but definitely not Niagara. There are two falls, the upper and lower. After about a quarter mile walk, there are steps (92) to walk to see the upper falls closes. The lower falls is a shorter walk, but if you want to rent a boat, the walk is longer. There is also a place to go into the water near the falls. The park has very good restaurants and of course, a tourist shop full of t-shirts, etc. Worth the walk and visit.

A Michigan venue for the family to enjoy

By Larry T |

walking around this lovely state park in the Michigan UP just miles from Lake Superior and Paradise, MI is well worth the time and effort to visit. And walk a bit to see the falls that have been there for many many years. The recorded history dates back to a 1671 French map detailing "Outakouaminan" . Take in the beauty of the upper and lower falls which can be viewed in all seasons.

Michigan's Natural Beauty

By Erik L |

We have been to Tahquammenon several times, but always just the lower falls because the weather did not cooperate. But this time, we made it to both, and we are so glad we did. Both falls are so beautiful; the pictures can't really do them justice. But here are the things you need to know. First, you will have to buy a parking sticker. It is $16, but it is good for all of Michigan's state parks. (Non-residents may have to pay more.) Both sets of falls have plenty of good parking and picnic areas. They have gift shops, food, and bathrooms. The upper falls had a brewery/bar. We strongly recommend buying some insect repellent. The mosquitoes were not too bad because it was a nice day and we had sprayed ourselves liberally, but the potential to get chewed on by bugs is there. Spray the kids down, at least. The walk from the parking lots to the falls is not bad, but be prepared to walk down (and back up!) a lot of stairs to the falls. But there are landings on the way, and it is totally worth it. For those who cannot handle steps, there are observation areas on the main level. You can hike from one set of falls to the other, but this is about a four-mile walk, one way. We recommend just driving it. Your sticker works at both. If you are a birder, you might see a pileated woodpecker. We did!

Too many stairs

By Ruth L |

Viewing spots required lots of stairs. Not fun for me in warm humid weather. After Niagara Falls, this is underwhelming, so have your expectations in check.

A Must See when in the U.P.

By Gary E |

The views were beautiful and we enjoyed the hiking. The area is clean and having food, etc available is very helpful. For most people I would recommend driving between falls and taking the rowboat to the island at the Lower Falls. We enjoyed our time there. Most people were very considerate when it came to using masks and social-distancing.

Very scenic water falls

By Brant P |

My wife and I visited here while staying in Paradise Michigan. Very scenic water falls and the trails were all easy walking. The one trail does contain 125 stairs though. A well worth it place to visit, and the state park there also has a very good micro brewery in it, and I recommend the blueberry beer.

Gorgeous

By SMCMichigan |

Our autumn visit was terrific. The falls are beautiful. Park staff were professional and helpful. Restrooms were very clean. Trails were well maintained. Appreciated that visitors were generally respectful about wearing masks during the Covid-19 pandemic. Great visit

Great experience!!

By Sherie T |

The Falls are beautiful! We really enjoyed both the lower and upper falls. Great paths. Will want to take the stairs for the really great and close views but can still enjoy even if stairs are hard for you. Can do both the lower and upper in one day. We also really enjoyed lunch at the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery! Great food and beer, cool decor, and just a nice vibe!

Rootbeer Falls

By marta z |

The falls are beautiful, the walking paths beautifully maintained. We would have loved to hike from the lower falls to the upper falls. The shuttle is limited after labor day.

Tahquamenon Falls Trip

By Anil |

Awesome place. Colorful place, very nice destination.
Both upper and lower falls are excellent.
Go through 94 steps to see the beauty of upper falls

The falls!

By kimberly t |

A drive to see the falls is a must do anytime I am in the UP. The whole area is so beautiful it almost looks fake. But be warned all of those steps you have to go down to see the Upper Falls you also have to hike back up. Whew! Nice that they also have a food truck next to the brewery.

Worth the drive!

By Homecroft56 |

Wonderful falls - the upper and lower - four miles apart. Each have paved trails the falls.. Several viewing positions along the way for great photo opportunities. Plenty of parking at each location. Really something to see.

Beautiful place

By Willam D |

The views of the falls (upper and lower) are breathtaking. The trails are easy to navigate and there is plenty of parking. Recommend going early in the day.

Nice place to visit, highly accessible

By Stephanie T |

A relaxing place to visit with boardwalks and paved paths to most viewing areas. This would be a good place for those using wheelchairs and walkers to enjoy some nature. Both the lower and upper falls will require some distance to go to get to the falls areas but it would be relatively easy to do so with the right mobility equipment. The upper falls requires going down 94 steps in order to be AT the falls but there are two viewing areas that don't require going down steps.

Stairmaster

By Savannah S |

Get ready for stairs on stairs but it's worth the workout. The lower falls had lots of little ares to explore for kids but the upper falls has the grander view.

Falling for the falls

By Explorer11132027761 |

The park is amazing. Worth the walking through the trail. Falls incredible experience. I went with family. Everyone enjoyed it. It was cool to walk in the lower falls too

falls are good, skip the pub

By c g |

saw the falls both big and small and was nice. the brew pub is at the large falls. my wife wanted the beer cheese soup.....it is thin not a thick style so don't be surprised if want thick soup. I ordered smoked whitefish salad.......I do not recommend as it tastes like tuna dumped on salad (same consistency I thought would be flakes style but it wasn't I should of asked though so my fault. the food I would grade as average you could miss it and not be disappointed.

Awesome Falls

By E2121POangiel |

Easy trails take you to the strenuous stairs if you desire to get a closer look at the falls. Beautiful setting, tannin colored waterfall, just gorgeous! I didn't do the hike between the upper and lower falls, but it is there and you can do as much of it as you want.

easy walking path to upper and lower falls...

By culpdavide |

went on Labor Day so the park was extremely packed...lots of spots for viewing, wish we would have rented a row boat to take to the island, but was very windy day. although lots of paths to falls, there were areas with several stairs.

Beautiful falls

By 773charlenec |

Two 60+ ladies visited the falls without doing the 94 steps and we saw plenty. We drove to the Upper Falls parking and did the walk of about 1/4 mile. Plenty to see, then drove to the Lower Falls parking and also had a short walk to see the falls. They are beautiful!

Beautiful natue!

By tefsearch |

We visited on our recent trip to upper Michigan for the first time. All museums and most shops were closed but how nice to find this state park. It was 22 degrees that day but we easily hiked to the lower falls which are spectacular!

Worth the Hike

By Erica |

There is a bit of walking involved to see all of the falls up close but so worth it! They were amazing and beautiful too see up close and the walk was also just as scenic. I wish we had put more time into going here to kayak around. It would also be a great place to picnic, go for a walk, or a long hike. Dogs are also allowed which is fun if not just cute to look at. Great place to get some cool photos or memorable merchandise.

Great winter outdoors destination

By acs898 |

We visited Tahquamenon SP in January 2020 to snowshoe their trails. At park HQ, Cheryl provided extensive information about where to hike. For two days, we had the trails virtually to ourselves. Hiking could also be done without snowshoes, as long as one is careful near snowdrifts, and there was a groomed track for XC skiing on one lomg trail. It was a great winter outdoors experience. The Falls are very scenic, and the brewpub on site was a good place to hang out, along with the groups of snowmobilers who use the area snowmobile trails.

100% worth your time

By Kristen C |

This park is great. The whole thing leading to the waterfalls is a boardwalk. This is easier to do if it isn't super hot out, but it's not much of a hike either way. It doesn't take much walking to get your first glimpse of a waterfall. Don't forget your sunscreen and sunglasses. There are great photo opportunities along the walk as well.

A nice stop along the way

By Ski361 |

Definitely worth the trip. Free parking, free admission. Very well-maintained wooden board walk through the woods. About a 1 mile easy hike to the top the low falls. There were a few falls there with outlooks they go right over the falls.

You had the option to hike off boardwalk to the upper falls. The terrain was more challenging so we kept our experience to the lower falls

The only word of caution is if you’re relying on GPS make sure you Matthew coordinates first because GPS service was non-existent

Beauty and bug spray

By Lucinda L |

Beautiful place that we enjoyed. We started at the lower falls and hiked to the upper falls. The hike was fun yet challenging, over 8 miles round trip taking several hours. Bring your bug spray! We start at 10a and did the 4+ miles to the upper falls, lots to see and places for pictures. We brought lunch and lots of water for the trip, ate lunch at the upper falls and then returned for the 4+ miles back. Two healthy adults with lunch included took us 4.5-5 hours total. You could get in the water at places yet we skipped that part.

Beautiful Falls with great walking path

By Ginny A |

The falls were great just beautiful. You do have to buy a day pass to go into the state parks if you live out of state but it’s reasonable it’s $11 per vehicle and you can go in any state park all day long for that.

I suggest you go to the lower Falls first, and then the upper Falls next. We did the opposite and the lower falls are not quite as impressive as the upper falls. Both have an easy walking path for handicapped people with walkers, canes or wheelchairs. both have gift shops and the upper Falls has walk up restaurant with picnic tables.

Beautiful place

By MinjaJovovic |

Beautiful place. We went 2nd week of October. We started from Upper falls and then we went to Lower Falls by River Trail. It took us 2 and a half hours to reach down but it was really worthwhile. Make sure you wear proper shoes, there are some muddy parts. Enjoy the beautiful view 👌🏻

Beautiful waterfalls

By Bellsc22 |

Great park, I did the lower falls. Very nice boardwalk trail for most and a nice bridge to get to another trail with more beautiful views. Was debating on if I wanted to stop, it was well worth the visit. I went around 9am or so, not that many people out so it was enjoyable. When I was making my way back a lot more people were coming so I would recommend going early morning if you want to avoid crowds.

Don't miss it!

By Jordan S |

The falls were fantastic! Beautiful sites. Paved trails. Easy access to the views at both upper and lower falls. Lots of steps go go down at the upper falls if you want to get close. Check out the brewery if you have time. Great food.

State Park worth the small Fee !!

By DannyWasserman |

Pay the small fee and enter the park. There are winding roads throught the park, then you get out and take some dirt roads to the upper and lower falls of this amazing Waterfalls. Not a ton of wildlife, but very surreal to watch the crushing water of the falls and its powerful sounds.

Nature at it’s finest.

By I5015TAjillp |

Beautiful State Park with multiple falls and nature trails. It is a spectacular place to visit. There are trails for every ability.

Great fall fun!

By EagleEngineer |

Visited the upper and lower falls during the fall. Well kept park, wonderful boardwalk and beautiful scenery. Hope to return to take a row boat to the island.

Beautiful Park

By Kevin C |

Very nice hikes to the waterfalls. You can rent canoes to paddle beneath the one large falls. Ice cream is available at the snack shop and it's delicious.

Not Niagara Falls, but Great

By Cynthia D |

Okay, there is no comparison to Niagara Falls in New York but if you want to enjoy a beautiful waterfall in Michigan this is as good as it gets and a lot closer than New York. There is quite a hike to get to the fall, up and down steps but if you take your time it is well worth the effort. We did the entire trail, steps and all and recommend you do the same.

Wow, and this is in Michigan. We are fortunate to have this State Park.

By Cynthia W |

BRING BUG SPRAY! When ever I have visited the mosquito are always there and very active.
The Falls Lower and Upper are unique with the brown streaks in the falls. The water is notably brown in color from the tannins leached from the cedar swamps which the river drains. Mosquito repellent is mandatory.

We camped in the LOWER CAMPGROUND, it has the largest sites. Water fill up is at the entrance where the sewer dump area is. We reserved a spot for a RV rig up to 40 feet and it was a back in spot. There are some pull throughs also (which seemed smaller than ours), but our lot was very large. There is only electric at the site and water spigots randomly around the campground.
1 restroom and1 shower building per section, can make for a long walk if you are on a far end, so make sure of your location and needs are met. Restrooms are fairly clean, but old. They need a update. The Lower campground, has a trail from the campground to the Lowoer Falls, about 1 mile, through the woods, or drive the 1 mile down the road to the parking area. Bike riding from the campground to the Lower falls is fun, down a steep hill and you get to pedal up it on the way back.
Lower Falls parking area is large. Some parking for buses and RV’s if there is room. The area is handicap accessible, but taking a wheel chair on the boardwalk may be challenging. It is about a 1/3 mile walk from the parking lot to the falls on the board walk, or you may just view the falls from the paved area from far away. You may also rent a boat to row a short distance to the other side of the creek to view the falls from a different direction. There an ice-cream shop and a gift shop that is well stocked except that they sold out of Mosquito netting for your head. (hard to believe since the mosquito's are guaranteed to be there and are usually quite bad. They should really do a better job of stocking the head nets) The mosquito's were very heavy, making it uncomfortable for some in our party to view the falls. You can hike to the upper falls on a trail, about 4 miles. (remember the mosquito repellent). Arrange someone to pick you up or walk back the 4 miles. Driving the car is about 4 miles also. You can spend about 1 hour or up to 3 hours if you rent a boat.

Upper Falls has a brewery and a gift shop and a grill. There are two locations at opposite ends to see very nice views of the falls, so take the time to walk around. The walk to the falls from the parking area is paved, so wheel chairs will work to see the view of the falls, but there is a stairway with 94 steps that take you down to the falls for a closer viewing. To view the falls, you will spend about 1 hr. This area is open year round is beautiful in the winter, but drive a 4 wheel vehicle because the area gets lots of snow. Enjoy.

NOTE: Bring a camera; and bug spray. Head net is great also with shirts having long sleeves.

Beautiful park!

By Kate T |

Beautiful place with an easy hike to the falls if you do it in two segments and move the car. If you are in the mood for more walk from the upper to the lower and back, 4 miles each way.

Beautiful scenery

By Kristi V |

Upper falls are beautiful and well worth the trip. If you are in the area this is a place you need to visit.

Beautiful Views

By Sherry C |

Tahquamenon is always a beautiful and enjoyable park to visit. A must have trip every year for us. Upper and lower are just amazing.

Stunning

By NormaRae03 |

The falls are absolutely gorgeous. We visited the upper falls first. There are 94 steps going down. Then to go down the gorge side, there are 116 steps. All these steps are worth it. We drove to the lower falls. We did not take the whole walk but walking to the falls were beautiful. The restrooms at both locations were very clean.

Love This Place

By MI_BRDNRD |

Tahquamenon Falls State Park holds a special place in our hearts. We first visited on our honeymoon, 10 years ago, and have come back nearly every year. Our favorite thing to do is hike the lower falls to upper falls trail. It’s considered an intermediate trail that’s about 10 miles in total. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart but is worth hiking at least once in your life.

Must See

By Margaret B |

This is Michigan's largest waterfall, and a must-see for anyone in the area. The falls are spectacular and can be enjoyed year around. Be prepared for crowds as this is a popular site. The adventurous can hike between the falls; (plan on at least 2 hours for the walk).

Great Family Day

By Beepa1942 |

Our visit included both the Upper and Lower Falls which are spectacular scenes. All paths to both Falls are accessible which made this visit especially enjoyable for my wife who depends on an power chair. With the new boardwalk to the Lower Falls, she was able to get close to the Falls, closer than ever before. The Michigan Parks Department "hit a homerun" when they expanded the nearly half-mile boardwalk to enhance access to the Lower Falls. Parking, restrooms and buildings are state-of-art making the visit easy and comfortable for families with accessibility needs.

A must see!

By Linda L |

We enjoyed a very pleasant walk from parking lots to both the upper and lower falls. If you have the time, I would take the trails between the falls. The falls and the area are beautiful! We got some lovely photos and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery.

Great place to visit

By buckeyeblazer |

This park is truly an exceptional Michigan State Park. The hiking trails to the Upper and lower falls are awesome. The transportation between the two falls is not in service at present, so parking can be an issue. The lower falls campground has a trail right from the campground to the falls.

Beautiful Park!

By Rhonda M |

We really enjoyed both the Upper & Lower falls. In our opinion, the lower falls are better so don't skip it. Both areas have food, gift shops, nice & clean bathrooms and easy to walk paths to view the falls (many benches along the path to rest if need be).

Wonderful

By Jane H |

Not to be missed. We went years ago and were surprised at the trails, walks, etc. It is much easier to walk, but you must do if you want up close somewhere around 100, but they are done well. So beautiful even with the tamarack brown to the water. Plenty of beautiful scenery.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park

By lithlith |

Tahquamenon Falls State Park is great! There are good trails and great view points. You'll get some great photos of the river and falls. Make sure to visit both the upper and lower falls while you're there. If you want to avoid the crowds, go earlier or later in the day.

What a beautiful day we had walking along the falls in between the rain drops. The colorful foliage really added to the views. It was a pleasure seeing so many people saying “Hi” and being nice to one another.

Beautiful, clean and safe

By Angelique L |

The falls are beautiful! Both Upper and Lower. They can both be viewed by a short walk. Wheelchairs are available for use if needed. The park and bathrooms are very clean. The giftshop is recommending mask use. Pets are welcome on a 6 foot leash.

Swimming & wading at the falls

By reneewoods |

The falls were beautiful. At the lower falls we were ALL able to wade and play in the shallow water around the falls. It was a great experience. I’d recommend bringing water shoes & towels. EVERYONE can walk in the shallows at the lower falls , very young and very old. Great place for a family outing!

A Must-See in U.P.

By Vicki Hill |

Now-paved trails lead to upper and lower falls, brown from water’s high tannin content. There are many lectures and summer activities for children and families before setting out, lots of tourist treats to buy and food trucks for snacks o meals. But nature itself is the great attraction, ADA access except for 94 steps to lower falls. Don’t miss anything natural in the Yoop, as natives call it: God’s country. Can be buggy...prepare!

Nice state park

By mailstop |

Upper falls is a 4, lower is a 3. Overall, though, a pretty, fairly large park, with gift shop, restaurant. We'd visit again if we lived near there.

Beautiful park

By cbthies |

Very nice paved trail to both the upper and lower falls. There are several stairs required to get near the falls, but there is good viewing along the trails. Our senior adults enjoyed the gorgeous views. The park even has wheelchairs available for those who need a bet of help on the trails.

Beautiful Falls and easy to walk to and around

By Bernard W |

Lower Falls—series of 5 waterfalls around an island. Here rent a rowboat and paddle to the island after Memorial Day. Wonderful, easy walk along boardwalk with very rewarding views.

Upper Falls (200’+ wide and 50’ high). Beautiful falls at the end of a tower of stairs. Stunning and powerful. The area at the entrance ($11 for non-Michigan residents) has nice restrooms and a large picnic area.

Awesome!!

By Cristi Payton |

Both the upper and lower falls are amazing. The upper is very impressive and the lower is beautiful. Definitely take the canoe over to the island to explore the lower falls up close. The boat rental is $7 person or $20 per boat. The boat holds up to 7.

Amazing Park!

By Dragon2075 |

This park is beautiful! $11 entry for non-Michigan residents. We walked to the Upper Falls, the paths were wide and easy to navigate. After, we drove to the lower falls and were pleased with the paths and views. This is a must-see if you are in the area!

Falls Visit

By ssgtsuave |

The falls are absolutely beautiful. Both upper and lower falls are a must see. We saw deer grazing. Their is a fee involved to enter. MAKE SURE you take bug spray. The big flies and mosquitoes will eat you alive!

Good place to visit and hike

By Zaphod |

This is a good place to visit and take photos. We liked the restaurant in the little "mall" at the entrance.

Vacation 2019

By da120757 |

Went to see the Falls. Easy half mile walk to see them on a paved pathway. Very nice walk through the woods to the falls.

Beautiful Falls

By DianeP48 |

Not at all a bad hike, wear comfortable shoes and bring some water, all those steps will get to you - but worth it!

pretty nature

By hahaterri |

The falls are really pretty. There were several lookouts, some of which had lots of stairs, but not all. Before we went we had two basic questions that were unanswered: how long should we plan on spending there and are the bears a problem for hikers. In some places we've been you don't want to hike with snacks in your backpack because of bears. We found answers to these.

First of all, one day is plenty. You can hike, see the upper and lower falls, and even go for a boat ride in one day. We spent two full days there (and two nights nearby) and while the falls are pretty, that was too long. There is nothing to do once you have seen the falls.

Secondly, bears did not seem to be an issue. We did not encounter any at all. No one nearby seemed concerned about bears either.

Amazing!

By RunningGirl14 |

We happened to go to the lower falls first. There are a lot more falls there, and a gift shop. We then drove to the upper falls with the incredible view that everyone sees pictures of. They had another great gift shop here, and a restaurant where we had lunch.
It is a state park, so if you are from out of state, it is $11 to visit the Falls, and it covers any state park for the day. You can pay at the entrance of either one of the falls, Worth every penny. Between the upper and lower falls, we easily spent several hours there. If you’re physically able, on the pathway to the left of the upper Falls. There are a lot of stairs to go down, but if you can do it, you get even more incredible pictures, and views of the upper Falls.

Incredible stop!

By HTCWI |

Beautiful waterfalls and scenery! Definite must stop while in the Upper Peninsula! Updated park facilities, clean restrooms, gift shops, camping, restaurant, boat rental, and stunning views!! Bring the family & stay for a while!! Large state park filled with natural beauty!

Great

By Monica F |

Everything was great - from seeing a bear while on train going to the boat to feeling sunshine on your face

Nature at its finest

By Joanna F |

This is a MUST SEE if you are traveling in the UP! The upper and lower falls are available, with a 4 mile hike between the two if you are up for it. You can swim in the lower falls, which we didn't know we could do. We ended up driving from the lower to upper falls, there was plenty of walking to do at each individual stop. The upper falls is truly breathtaking! We went in the late afternoon around 5ish, so the sun was at a perfect angle on the falls. We stopped at the brewery afterwards for a nice cold beer! I would go back in a heartbeat.

Hiking the river trail

By AAmbrose |

A beautiful and well-marked Trail along the river. Heed the warning concerning areas that could be muddy and underwater. And also think about insect repellent as the trail does go through some dense forest with plenty of mosquitoes.

Stunning!

By Martha G |

It is always fun to read other's comments, but this is a lovely park with easy walking back to the falls. Strongly recommend! By the way, the water is brown due to the tannins from cedars in a swampy area...

Too busy to be fun

By saddi |

The falls are beautiful but there were too many visitors to the park for it to be fun. The trails were crowded and it felt too commercialized. There was no opportunity to enjoy the falls unless you hiked between them. My husband has back problems and we were unable to do that.

The Roar of the Falls Was Powerful

By 19twotots20 |

This park is quite large. We visited the upper and lower falls. The upper falls has a nice gift shop and an amazing restaurant. I tried the wrap they had on special the day we were there and the chicken inside was amazing. I also tried their whitefish sandwich. The fish was great! Service was wonderful.

The upper falls could easily be heard from quite a ways away. They are absolutely breathtaking. The lower falls is just as powerful and beautiful. There is a bridge to walk across the lower falls.

While it's POSSIBLE to walk from the upper/lower falls I would only recommend that for experienced hikers. We drove as it's a 3 mile hike and it's not 100% paved and part near the lower falls is quite steep.

The midge flies and mosquitos are quite thick in places so bring repellent or do what I saw some of the people on the trail did.... They had hats with netting that tucked into their shirts. Brilliant!! We had some masks to cover our mouth/nose and sunglasses for our eyes but the trail is quite shaded from the forest so it's a bit dark for sunglasses.

What a beautiful place!

By RA S |

We haven't been here in several years and are so glad we came back! We went to both the lower and upper falls. The lower falls are a easier to get to -- especially if you don't want to go up and down a lot of stairs! The walk is easy; there are several lookouts where you can take pictures. You can reach the upper falls by taking a 4-mile hike or drive directly to the station. We took the stairs to see the upper falls and it was worth it. And we had a great lunch at the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery & Pub, which is located right in the park.

Pretty falls and lovely park

By ARB1615 |

The park is well kept and has very nice boardwalks. The falls are pretty and worth seeing. There are two gift shops and places to eat in the park. Clean bathrooms and friendly park staff.

Easy walk to view the falls!

By GeeGee220 |

Absolutely beautiful! Well kept park with easily accessible paths. A highlight of my recent trip to Michigan's fabulous upper peninsula!

See the falls

By 1966Airstream |

A nice small state park. We walked the trails to the upper and lower fails and enjoyed our time there. They are doing some trail renovations so expect some closures. Our only disappointment was trying to find a place to have our picnic lunch. We did finally find a place. It was an enjoyable time.

Must See!

By Stephanie F |

We visited at the end of September and saw both the lower and upper falls. Both were beautiful falls, but to me the upper falls were more stunning. Worth a trip if you are in the area to see.

Beautiful!

By Ministicgirl |

As far as the waterfalls and go, this place was quite beautiful. It was however, crazy busy with tourists. There were a significant amount of stairs however it was worth going. Bring your camera!

A must see if visiting Michigan's upper peninsula

By Veronica S |

This is truly a wonder of nature that is enjoyable in any season. There are miles of trails that can be hiked through pristine, gorgeous forests. You can also walk from the upper falls to the lower falls and there is a shuttle service to take you back to your parking lot. Though there are view stations from ground level, additional viewing stations for the upper falls can include a trek of 96 or 116 steps. At the lower falls, there are trails along the river with numerous viewing spots. You can also take a rowboat at the lower falls to the island in the middle of the river for additional exploration and viewing. There are clean rest rooms, gift shops and a brew pub at the lower falls with some excellent food.

Great Experience

By goatguy46 |

Great natural beauty. This is a must see on any trip to the UP - the falls are amazing and the park is very well kept. Allow enough time to see the upper and lower falls.

Tip: Go the the falls in the morning. In summer they are quite crowded by afternoon.

All I can say is Awesome...

By Terry F |

It's worth taking the time to drive up the falls. It's beautiful. There's a lower fall and an upper and there's also a gift shop.. Go a little farther north and you will be on Lake Superior...

This park is truly outrageous!

By TennisStar602 |

My parents and I came to this park. The Lower Falls had more hiking trails and many smaller waterfalls, but the Upper Falls had the better and bigger waterfall. The waterfalls were brown like coffee! There was tons of parking and many boardwalks. There was a a slight change of foliage in late September. The Upper Falls had a true restroom, but the Lower Falls had portable toilets. To get better views, one should try to descend the stairs or take short hikes on some dirt roads. This park even had wheelchairs for free for people with mobility issues. It was not terribly buggy on a late September day. The admission price was ten dollars ($10.00) for an out of state vehicle. The Lower and Upper Falls were perhaps a three (3) mile drive apart.

Lovely state park

By traveler59 |

This is a wonderful wilderness park. Views are amazing. Lots of kid-friendly hiking and great wheelchair accessible paths either on boardwalks or asphalt. Upper and lower falls are great. Upper is more impressive, lower is better for hiking. New bridge is cool and allows you to hike the island. Interesting facts posted throughout. Nice brew pub onsite. We went for a day trip but lots of campsites available. Bring your bug spray! Lovely park and extremely well maintained and large. Bathrooms were modern and nice.

Beautiful Falls with plenty of outdoor activities.

By Bus1313 |

Spent some time camping at the Rivermouth Modern Campground at Tahquamenon Falls State Park. This campground is not located at the falls, but is a short drive away. It's a very nice campground, nice large sites, located on the Tahquamenon River, with excellent restrooms and shower facilities. Good opportunities for kayaking, fishing and bicycling. Beautiful Whitefish Bay is right outside of the campground entrance.
There are nice trails at both the Upper and Lower Falls with observation decks, as well as a approximate 4 mile trail between the two falls. There is also a shuttle that operates if you only want to hike that one way. There are rowboats available to row over to the island between the lower falls, and there were many people playing in the water below the lower falls. The color of the water is unique and really evident in the falls.

Beautiful falls!

By parksvisitor |

We stopped in quickly on our way from lower Michigan to Munising. Even with the stairs, it is a nice easy hike/walk to all the viewpoints and overlooks. On a chilly mid-September Thursday, it was still quite busy. The falls are beautiful.

The gift shop needs to pare down its offerings. It was almost overwhelming. Sometimes less is more. We were going to stop in for a beer at the brewery, but after waiting a minute or two, it seemed too confused and busy, so we opted for the food truck instead, which was great.

Lower falls the best to experience water on multiple levels

By bluerev1 |

Amazing Falls, easy to use walking trails, great "off the record" river walk to island at trails' end for more trails and epic water-fall sitting by the lower falls (really--we found a spot we could walk under and sit under a smaller waterfall near the island.

Simply Breathtaking

By Owlflurry |

This was our first trip to the falls and it was incredible! The upper falls is truly impressive, the photos don’t do it justice. I wish I would’ve scheduled a kayak tour or something to get even closer. You can feel the waterfall mist on your face and it’s so refreshing! I’d recommend bringing bug spray, seemed like a lot of mosquitos around. The restrooms were clean and convenient. They also had a brewery/restaurant by the upper falls and it was OK. Only like 3 beer choices, no IPAs and the food was mediocre. Not a lot of options in the area or gas stations so make sure you are prepared. We did this and Oswald’s Bear Ranch in the same day and it worked out well. You can easily do both :)

Great Park: Keep people out of the water

By fossmoj |

I always enjoy visiting the falls. Beautiful scenery and plenty of outdoor activities available. Concessions provide a great selection and the pub at the Upper falls has great food and brews.
Why I give this a 2 star: People need to stay out of the water. I swear there must have been upwards of 75 people scattered among the lower falls.
One, stay on the trail. This helps prevent advancing erosion and ensures the falls are there for years to come. Second, this is rushing water with slippery rocks. Any slip could send you down river and cause injury. Not to mention, some deadfall flowing downstream nailing you in the head. Then you’ll blame the park rather than yourself.
Third, you’re ruining the beauty of the falls. Who can enjoy their natural beauty with a bunch of flat-landers wading around. There are plenty of other swimming holes on the river.

First trip to the falls

By SpartanFIJI |

Very enjoyable trip to see both the upper and lower falls. The
Upper falls are much larger and drop about 50 ft. You can walk down about 90 steps to a viewing area that is very close to the falls and provides a scenic view and is a great spot for pictures
Remember, it’s also 92 steps back up. The lower falls are several miles down the road or a four mile hike along the water
Not as tall, but there are five separate falls to see. Several spots
along a well made walkway to see the different falls. There is
also a spot to take a boat out into the river near the falls.
The park is dog friendly and a nice way to spend a few hours
in the UP.

Two parks, two falls, one admission

By Kathy O |

The lower falls are beautiful, and it’s a pleasant stroll all the way to the brink. We watched kids playing in the water and ducking behind the falls. Lots of family fun!
The upper falls are also beautiful, but a little harder to get to. It is much bigger than the lower falls. There are many stairs down (and back up!) into the gorge for the best view.

Tahquamenon Falls Great Day Trip for all ages

By Mary Jane Campbell |

Both the upper and lower falls have paved paths to the overlooks and benches so you can rest. Wear walking shoes. At the lower falls, there were areas to rent a boat so you could explore the lower falls. There were lots of steps at both and so anyone with mobility issues couldn't do all of the steps but they could still have great views. A wonderful and beautiful area.

Falls are great, but be prepared to be swarmed by people

By Karin S |

Could not believe how tourist-filled this place was. It was like a step down from being at Disney or Niagara Falls or something! Big sign over the entrance, wide paved walks to the falls views. The falls were cool, but not "pack the parking lot" full. The gift shop was mediocre, and there was a line for ice cream, which was one of few food options. Kind of strange for a place with this many people.

Family time

By sign101d |

My friend and I brought my 3 boys here on a long weekend excursion. We had a blast. We camped here and walked up to the waterfalls. BEAUTIFUL. We hiked to the lower falls and then drove to the upper falls (just because of sunlight). We had a wonderful time. We are from WI and I would come back.

We did not fall from our feet...

By siglerk76 |

The falls are very nice. The upper falls are more of a fall, the lower is more of rapids than a fall.
You can walk inside the river in the lower falls and my kids loved it. At the lower part you can also rent a boat to go around the lake.
If you want you can walk from the upper to the lower part and vice versa. It is a four mile walk one way. If you want, you can park your car at one of them walk one way and come back with a shuttle that cost $17 for the first person and three more for each extra person.
You can spend there between two to three hours.

Great View!

By Mrs. W |

There was a line up in the road to even enter the park! We started at the upper falls, there are a couple spots to see the falls, very beautiful. They had a nice little shop and brewery! The beer was delish! The shop had a lot to pick from! There was a little food spot but they didn’t have much. I order the “nachos” it consisted of old chips and a tiny 2oz cup of cheese, not worth it. Next we traveled to the lower falls by vehicle as it was a couple mile hike down there. The lower falls were awesome! We paid to take a little boat over which we didn’t wait in line long for that (cash only). We paddled around the water then went ashore to the lower falls and explored! It was a perfect hot day to walk through the water and around the trail to see the entire lower falls island. Well worth it! You can even see the upper falls from here. Many great pictures were taken! There were tons of people there this day as it was during Labor Day weekend but it never felt crowded!

Nicely Built Up State Park Showcasing a Beautiful Natural Feature

By kedalion1 |

My family and I stopped on a sunny afternoon in August and we went to the Lower Falls. The place was surprisingly built up and beautiful - the river breaks around a small island in the stream and drops from a 10-15ft falls on both sides as the Lower Falls empties into a large lagoon. There is a boat dock where you can rent boats and explore the lagoon, including the island. All over above and below the falls people were exploring and playing in the water, building little "Zen Jenga" towers and enjoying the summer. This is one of the most built-up places in the UP I've been to with a snack bar and a gift shop, flush toilets, paved walks - a very, very cool place.

Trip to snowy UP

By J Durnbaugh |

Despite white out conditions and bitter temperatures eventually the hike was worth it. Only issue was at the lower falls the drive to the parking lot was closed off. But we decided to make the mile and half hike down plus the third of a mile hike back to the falls. It was nice the trails were groomed.

Our Anniversary Destination

By FrannRA |

Nature at it's finest. Walking from the Lower to the Upper is our goal every year. Gift Shops and dining are great. Can't wait to go back every year! Make sure you get the State Park Pass on your license plate tabs every year for free admission.

Great place.

By crpete |

Lovely place with lots to do. Short paved hikes followed by longer boardwalks followed by dirt trails for the experienced hikers. The falls are beautiful and in July was a great place to dip your feet!

Get there early to avoid crowds.

By TheBoyneFamily |

We hiked the lower falls before 10am. It was getting crowded as we were leaving. No restrooms at the lower falls but some are currently under construction. Upper falls was busier but still able to walk around with ease.
Beautiful area!

A must see!

By Connie B |

We went here without too much expectation. It was truly amazing and we highly recommend everyone to go. It is easy to walk and see the natural beauty surrounding you! We loved it!!!

Beautiful Falls but People leave your pets at home!

By Alisa H |

We always look forward to visit the falls and understand that walking can be tricky in the winter. The park had the trail to the upper falls plowed but still had some icy spots to be careful with your footing. That wasn't the problem! People that feel they need to bring their dogs to the park, need to clean up after them. This is similar to littering!! These people let them poop wherever on the trail and NOT clean up after them!!! There were numerous spots of poop that if you weren't looking down you would step in it!! If you are going to take your pet clean up after it!!!

Upper Peninsula Must See

By Wildflower |

Trails with boardwalks are well-maintained. Some have many stairs to descend and thus ascend. There is no entry fee. Tahquamenon Falls are magnificent. Restaurant and gift shop on site.

Beautiful Falls

By Tracy D |

There is a day park fee if you are out of state but you can go to any other state park that day with the one pass. We first visited the lower falls. They were very nice and there was a boardwalk along the trail. There weren't a ton of people when we got there. We then drove to the upper falls. Upper and lower falls have separate parking lots. There is a trail between the two but is a 2 1/2 hour one way trek on the trail. (They have shuttle service you can pay for to take you back to your original parking lot). I don't know if it was timing related or popularity, but there were a lot more people at the upper falls which are more impressive. The upper falls walk was also nice and there were steps at each end that you could go down to better access some views. Without the stairs there were still views, but the stairs got you closer.

See the Falls from All Angles

By William W |

They are doing extensive work to make the paths accessible and easy to navigate. Perfect! The signs are accurate, encourage wandering to see the Falls from different perspectives, and help you make the most of your experience. Take the walks. Explore. Stay on the path to protect the area, but walk and walk and walk! I would recommend coming in every season and at different times of the day since the views were spectacular and all but say, "Come back soon!" Cleanest and most spacious restrooms nearby!

Beautiful falls

By readingteach627 |

Although we were planning this trip to coincide with the fall colors most of the trees had not changed color yet. BUT we still enjoyed viewing both the Upper and Lower falls in this state park. It has easy access and beautiful views along the paved paths. There are bathrooms available at the beginning of each site. It would be pretty to view at any time of the year.

Wonderful sights

By Dave J |

First visit since childhood, it was just as amazing as what I remembered.

Paths clearly marked, good parking and refreshments. Only issue was access, couple of us don’t get around well and struggled with the walks to the access points. Only an issue for the mobility impaired though. They do offer wheelchairs and even a motorized chair free of charge.

Well worth going an hour North if you visit Mackinac Island. A true UP treasure.

Nice Stop

By Eisme77 |

This is definitely a high-volume tourist state park. Having a state park sticker on your vehicle expedites your entry. The path to the falls is paved and quite accessible. However, if you want to go down river to the bottom, there are a LOT of stairs. The falls are a beautiful reward for putting up with the crowds. The park facilities even feel a little more amusement-parky with large buildings, restaurant, and brewery on-site. While this is absolutely a must stop if you are in the area, be ready for the peeps unless you are lucky enough to be traveling off-peak.

Both falls worth seeing

By Alexcat |

We visited the state park on the 4th of July. The weather was quite hot but beautiful. Be sure to arrive early to ensure a good parking spot and avoid lines. We visited the upper falls first and then drove to the lower. There is a shuttle available to drive you back to the upper falls if you decide to hike the 4 miles to the lower falls. Make sure to apply bug spray and sun block, those Michigan fly bites really hurt. You can rent a row boat to go out to the lower falls or go out into the water.we didn’t do it but it looks really fun. There are many vantage points for photos so be sure to use them all to get the best photos.

MUST SEE if in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

By stephentS2039QO |

Tahquamenon Falls is tucked away in the far reaches of furthest north Michigan, about a dozen miles south of Lake Superior. But if you are anyplace in the area -- including Mackinac Island -- It's worth the one hour extra to drive to the falls.

The Upper Falls is a mini-Niagara Falls -- second only to Niagara Falls in the easter U.S for total water flow, it bears a remarkable resemblance to Niagara's Horseshoe Falls. The lower falls are nice, but not nearly as spectacular as the upper falls.

Both falls are easily accessible, with close parking, paved paths. It is only 1/4 mile from parking to the upper falls. There are excellent viewing spots that do not require any climbing. The view from directly adjacent to the falls does require negotiating a 94-step stairs.

The lower falls are about 3 miles away, but you drive between them -- in fact, they are accessed through separate park entrances. Parking at the lower falls is only about 100 yards from the viewing area.

Both the upper and lower falls have convenient and clean restrooms, snack bars and gift shops.

Loved Seeing Tahquamenon Falls!

By Mark E |

I was recently at Tahquamenon Falls on a Tuesday afternoon when passing through the U.P. I was not able to make it to the falls on my last visit to the U.P., so I definitely wanted to get there on this trip. I was not disappointed, and the falls were incredible! The Upper Falls are beautiful and only second to Niagara Falls in terms of water flow east of the Mississippi River. I only had time to see the Upper Falls on this visit, but these clearly seem to be the more popular. They are pretty easily accessible, as the walk is only about 1/4 mile from the parking lot, and you can hear the falls pretty much right away when you begin the trail. There are lots of stairs, however, if you choose to see other vantage points of the falls. I enjoyed spending about 2 hours here, and it was cool to see these falls from a variety of vantage points. It was kind of busy on the day I visited, as the weather was beautiful, but I still enjoyed myself. There was also a nice gift shop to browse on the premises, and there was a small restaurant, but I ate lunch prior to my visit. I enjoyed Tahquamenon Falls, and this is another beautiful landmark in the U.P.!

Just see in the area

By Audra M |

Really loved this stop. It was great. We enjoyed the lower falls more than the upper falls just due to advisability to the water. The walk was easy for my husband who had heel surgery earlier in the year on both sites. There is food and shopping offers at each location also. Buying access to the state park at one site, gets you in at the next. If you are a hiker you can like from lower to upper falls and vice-versa it suggests 4 something miles and about 2.5 hrs. A must see.

Just Beautiful! A must see!

By Alex |

Amazing views between the Upper Falls and Lower Falls. The more views you want to see the more walking required. Lots of stairs on Upper. Lower offers the closest views and less stairs

A MEMORABLE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Gorgeous scenery and accessible lookouts.

By Pete Campbell |

While much of the country was in 90°+ heat, Paradise & the park were 68°. Getting to the falls was easy enough for all - like my wife with a problem knee.
I took dozens of impressive pictures & videos of more water falling than we had seen since Niagra long ago!

Amazing

By tina |

It is Amazing what beuty there is all around us. they did a great job making it an attraction with easy access.

Stunning View of the Falls

By Hoover |

The lower falls were beautiful and the walking area was nice and well kept. Attempted the hike to the upper falls (thought that was the only way to see it), but it was hard and we turned back. Didn’t realize until after we left that you can drive to the upper falls! Wish we would have known that so we didn’t waste our time with the hike. But overall it was a good experience!

Our favorite of our Trip!

By Robi0376 |

Favorite stop on a very cool 9 day trip we took! Kids (16, 13, 11) loved this. Wish we would have spent all afternoon, but we ended up only being able to have about 1.5 hours at the lower falls. We camped at the lower falls (nice big sites). We had a camper with W/E. The park is huge and we drove around. First we went to Upper falls (about 3 miles away?) and it was very urban like (no rough trails to see it). Went to the restaurant and brewery (very busy and put our name on a list, one hour wait, so we walked down to the falls and back and still had time to wait for our reservation). The upper falls are large and good for a nice pic. The store here is good and funny enough, the stores at lower and upper are owned by different families and carry different things (if on the fence, buy there or you'll be coming back!). Lots of nice seating areas and variety of food.
Then we went to lower falls and weren't prepared, so had to drive back to the campground to get our suits! In order to really see the falls, you'll need about $20 cash for a row boat to get across the river (easy paddle your own). I don't know of any other way, unless you want to hike a ways they said. You take this little row boat across and then play in lots of amazing waterfalls! If someone were to build a perfect .5 mile round island with waterfalls, they would have built this island. It's amazing! Kids had so many options to play around in. We have amazing pictures from here and loved it so much! They could walk behind the taller ones or sit in the small ones. The walk around the island is short (half mile) and super fun!

Two very large nice Falls worth seeing

By Global196909 |

The whole park was very nice. There are two quite wide falls with in a short walk from each other. Walk is short and easy so any one can see them

Yeah, go here

By lyle7692 |

This is a natures gem, now understand, it is popular. If you go at noon, it will be tough to find parking. In the evening it slows down. The lower falls are right there, the upper falls are a 1/4 mile back on a asphalt path. If you’ve made the trip here, you must go. Give me a vote if this was helpful

Great day for a walk into the woods and wilderness. God’s Country at its finest!

By JanCan |

We went to the upper falls first. Beautiful falls.94 steps to get a closer view. Worth every step back up.Decided to drive to lower falls. Walked to bridge and over to get into water by lower falls. Nice walkway and moderate walk. About 2 miles round trip. Beautiful day! Brewery at the upper falls. Buy a state park sticker with car registration. Much cheaper. Nice views if you can’t walk far.

By Lisa J |

What a great park. The upper Falls is about a 1/4 mile walk. They have these fancy wheel chairs that they let you borrow if you have trouble walking. Right now they are renovating one of the overlooks so it is closed but you can see it at the other overlooks very nicely. There is a pub and restaurant, a snack bar with hotdogs and ice cream. The gift shop is very large with everything Tahquamenon Falls. The lower falls is 3 miles east of the big falls, the park is just as nice but shorter walk.

Worth stopping to see

By Lin B |

The walk to the falls was pa Ed and easy walking. Both falls are worth the stop. Very pretty. Ended with an ice cream cone. Yum

Beautiful fall viewing with accommodations for those with special needs.

By MaryEllen B |

We visited first week of October when the weather was unseasonably warm. Fall colors were just beginning to peak and just gorgeous! My husband uses a rollator to walk and we found the upper falls totally accessible for him. Of course, we couldn’t take the steps down to the falls, but were able to get stunning views of the falls from the many lookouts along the way. I highly recommend this beautiful park for seniors or those needing special accommodations.

if you can't get to Niagara, go here!

By Chantelle |

After several other waterfalls in the UP, we finished up here. The granddaddy of them all, it was good to see this one last! For the upper falls, I recommend starting at the farthest viewing point first. The water is brown from the tannin in the area trees, but with thousands of gallons of water flowing each second, it's a sight to behold.

Gorgeous state park!

By NeoAxion |

Definitely one of the highlights of my trip to the upper peninsula! When I first saw the falls, it reminded me of Niagara in some ways. We went during the fall season which was especially beautiful.

Beautiful UP Destination

By sarah b |

If you're a nature lover, then this is a must do. The falls are beautiful, especially in the winter. You pay a very little admission to park, and there is a nicely paved parking lot. There is a very short walk on a walking path to a set of 94 steps which you walk down to see the beautiful Upper Falls. Breath taking views!

Beautiful falls

By rdsm77 |

Most of the drive to Tahquamenon Falls was pretty boring. Just a lot of trees. Also heading east I never saw the sign toward Dollarville so I took the long way through Newberry. Once I got there, I noticed the entrance was for the Upper Falls. I could have sworn when I mapped the trip that the Lower Falls were much closer and I thought you could drive there. Apparently not. I have no freaking clue how to get to the Lower Falls so I just did the walk to the Upper Falls overlook not realizing it was likely the same trail for both. Not like there was wi-fi to check a map.

This place was packed and I barely got a parking spot. There’s a paved trail but closer to where I parked was a nature trail which I took instead. So many stupid dogs. It’s ridiculous. Dogs do not care about waterfalls. Leave them at home where they're not scaring any wildlife!

Then once I got to the river it was over 100 steps down to the overlook. I went down the steps knowing my knees would not like it. It actually wasn’t too bad. I didn’t go all the way to the end since it was so crowded. There was an area where I could take pictures and I’m thinking the photos were better from there rather than getting too close.

Going back up wasn’t too hard. Luckily there weren’t a lot of people going back at the same time so I could pause at each landing to rest the knees and not worry about being crowded by idiots not wearing masks. Covid is real and it hasn't gone away! Not a bad hike. Apparently I was simply there on the wrong day to do it.

Beautiful Waterfalls and Scenic Trails

I visited Tahquamenon Falls State Park and it was an amazing experience
! The waterfalls are stunning, and the park has beautiful, easy to walk trails. Definitely worth the visit!

Awesome

By L B |

The hiking and sight seeing is beautiful. Take your time and adventure. It is beautiful here. Upper and lower.

Very pretty!

By Brian O |

The falls are beautiful! Make sure you have your recreation passport or you will be charged for a day pass. The lower falls is a nice easy walk. The upper falls has 96 stairs to get to the falls.

Meh.

By Robyn R |

I always hate giving nature an average rating, but there were far more beautiful waterfalls we saw on our visit. This was underwhelming, It didn't help that it was a rainy day so we couldn't take the rowboats out. I guess I probably had overhyped it in my mind. It was also really busy (even on a dreary day) which isn't really our thing. Easy paths to get to all views of the waterfall. Well maintained. Excellent bathrooms.

Cool to see once

By Sara O |

I personally think the falls were cool to see once. Probably wouldn't need to see them again. I have kids ages 1-8 so we only stopped at the upper falls. A little bit of a walk to get to the viewing area and if you go far enough to take the stairs down to right where the falls are its 93 steps. Be prepared to be out of breathe on the way back up. They have a brewery right on sight but if you are looking to budget then pack a lunch and a picnic blanket and you can sit on the grass by the parking area.

So beautiful!

By Lauriamom |

This park is so beautiful! We live about 2 hours south of the falls, so we’ve been here many times. I love that it’s dog friendly and also many areas are handicap accessible. Definitely rent a row boat and go to the island (lower falls area). It’s a very beautiful walk, not super long, but you can walk into the river at certain places. It’s an amazing experience. So beautiful!!

Stunning falls from several viewpoints

By Jewelsworld |

I drove up to the falls on a very gloomy day with tons of rain but just as I arrived, the sun came out and lit up everything and it was just stunning, especially with the brilliant fall color. The walk to the falls is longish if you aren’t entirely mobile but the paths are pretty even. There are some steep steps down to the best overlook but there are other places for stunning views if you aren’t able to do stairs. The falls have tea colored water because the river feeding them goes through a swampy area full of cedars. It makes them quite unique. Certainly worth the trip off of Highway 28.

Equally As Beautiful In Winter

By MI_BRDNRD |

My husband and I take a trip up to Tahquamenon Falls every fall. We’ve always wanted to see what the falls look like in the winter time and this year we made that dream a reality. Needless to say it was breathtaking! It was really cold but worth it. I would highly recommend visiting the falls in the winter at least once in your lifetime. You get to experience the falls in a way that you’d otherwise miss out on any other time of the year. There were no crowds, no bugs and the trails to the various observation decks were well maintained. Just be to sure bundle up!!

Must see

By Mark M |

Beautiful place, well maintained walking paths, and great roads getting there. We read the bugs could be bad but had no problems while there. Have a beer at the brewery at the Upper Falls.

Beautiful

By Vickie M |

I can't count the amount of times I've been here and still enjoy every visit! The falls are gorgeous and the River Trail between the upper and lower falls is challenging but awesome!

Favorite spot

By Diann M |

We love to visit the Falls. The fall is such a beautiful time to see the colors and the Falls. Reasonable hike to see the Falls. Lots of steps to get closer.

Awesome!!

By SidSidow |

The Lower Falls was a pleasant multi-Falls with a rather distant view. But, the Upper Falls had an awesome view at the brink. It takes a pretty long walk from the parking lot to the Upper Falls (the Lower Falls is right off the parking lot) but there are several good viewing areas before you get to the brink.

Upper and lower falls

By Lila T |

Beautiful falls with access to upper and lower falls via short paths. We drove first to the upper falls and walked the paved path and climbed the stairs to view the upper falls. It is an easy walk and very pretty. I recommend then driving (saves time) to the lower fall access point and parking again to walk to the lower falls viewing area. The best thing to do here is rent the row boat for a tiny paddle to the inner island where you get a view of all the lower falls and it is easy to wade and swim in the falls, and walk around the little island. Nice picnic spots too. we purchased a day pass that allowed us to park in both parking lots and was around $10.

In love with this place

Amazing place we love this place I am in love with the falls and hike every morning we went we we camped and beautiful camground will be back soon people at campground nice friendly make sure bring lot food camp no store around great sub shop in tow they are huge sub u can share 😀

Worth the trip

By Lori L |

This was not a strenuous hike like other trails I have been on to see waterfalls. Not a long trail maybe a 1/4 mile with 94 steps going down and of course you have to come back up them. The water was brown from the tannins comming from trees, leaves, etc. in the area and leach into the water. That's why it is called Root Beer Falls because the water is brown. The weather was cool on July 2 with some light rain. There are clean restrooms, a restaurant, food truck, and gift shops. We paid $11 I think it was for non-resident for a day pass for state parks. If you park by the upper or lower falls there is a shuttle that will take you to either lower or upper where you park. Shuttle is not free I remember seeing the sign $17 for first person and $3 per person after you pay for the $17 for everyone in your group. We opted to drive the 3 miles to lower falls. Lower falls has a bridge that you cross by foot and the trails are longer than the upper falls. We only saw birds along the hike. It was worth the $11 and not very crowded at noon. We ate at the BBQ food truck which only takes cash. Bring cash for food and souvenirs. If you use a credit or Debit card there is an upcharge of 4%. We had a great time at the Falls. It's about a hour and a half from St. Ignace where we stayed while we were visiting the Upper Peninsula.

Wow - Beautiful Falls!

By Joseph H |

My wife and I enjoyed hiking around the Lower Falls and visiting Upper Falls. These are grand falls - one must stop by if in the 3-hour radius of Traverse City. One item stood out at this state park - accessibility. The trails to viewing platforms were either paved (upper falls) or wood platforms (lower falls) were all accessible to individuals in wheelchairs - this is rare at both state and national parks. Kudos to Wolverine nation (please note the sarcasm as I am an Ohio resident) for providing such awesome accessibility - the rest of America could truly learn from this state park!

Incredibly Beautiful and Relaxing Place to Visit

By Howard Steffey |

The Tahquamenon Falls State Park is a 46,179 acre public recreation area and is the second largest of Michigan's state parks. The park borders Lake Superior and follows the Tahquamenon River as it passes over Tahquamenon Falls and drains into Whitefish Bay, Lake Superior. The Tahquamenon Falls include a single 50-foot drop, the Upper Falls, plus the cascades and rapids collectively called the Lower Falls. During the late-spring runoff, the river drains as much as 50,000 U.S. gallons of water per second, making the upper falls the second most voluminous vertical waterfall east of the Mississippi River, after only Niagara Falls (Wikipedia).

Incredibly beautiful views of nature throughout. Thought about hiking up the River Trail until we saw how rugged the terrain was to include a 2.5 hour average hike time with poison ivy along the way. See attached photo of the warning sign.

Must Visit for someone coming to Michigan

By vamsi s |

- Started with Lower Falls and then drove up to the Upper Falls. We wanted to do the river trail but it was cold and it snowed on Halloween in 2023. The views of both the falls are spectacular. The color of the falls is so unique. If someone is visiting Michigan, I would recommend they drive upto these falls and it should be a day trip from anywhere in Michigan

Nice Soft Insoles a Must

By Creg S |

A beautiful day contributed to an enjoyable experience at Tahquamenon Falls State Park. First, we ate at the lodge where we had a great meal. The food was good and the portions plentiful. It was decorated with various nature related decorations such as animal heads and skins. Outside of the lodge was a gift shop and a place to get drinks and ice cream which we enjoyed. Lastly, we took an approximately 1/3 of a mile hike to the Tahquamenon Falls. You can get up nice and close if you take a multi-flight set of stairs which says that it is 94 steps. Beware, you have to climb back up the stairs and it is actually 104 steps (we counted).

Our group had a very relaxing day and enjoyed the hike to see the gorgeous falls. Nature lovers will consider this a must see.

Scenic, worth a look.

By Troy R |

Nice park. Disappointed to have to pay to see it. (Park entry fee). The upper falls are pretty spectacular.

A Can't Miss Stop

By WeatherWizard |

Popular, but maybe not as well known as it should be due to its relative remoteness. You'll do some walking to enjoy each of the falls the most, but I (in my mid-60s) didn't find them difficult at all in either location. (The hike between the Lower and Upper Falls is for serious hikers only.)

New facilities are being constructed at the Lower Falls which will make this well-kept park even better. It's already spectacular and a must-see, and there's more to do there outside of the falls.

Top Notch!

By robertmoffett |

The falls are beautiful! The upper falls you see from four vantage points and from a distance and the lower falls are more experiential— rent a row boat and get closer to the falls for photos. We loved our visit!

Amazing place to explore!

By Vicky S |

Family of 5 including grandpa and small children ages 6, 8. We purchased a row boat for $20 per family ( includes the day) to go out to the small island which the lower falls surround. Everyone in our family was able to get in the water and explore the falls. I wished we would have worn our swim suits so we could have actually gotten in but we waded around caught minnows and enjoyed nature at its finest. It would have been great to have water shoes and a picnic basket as we would have stayed all day. My kids absolutely loved being able to get in the water. We will definitely be back another time pure Michigan. ❤️

Spectacular

By visamastermichigan |

The falls never disappoint. They’re beautiful any time of year and it’s all left up to nature and nature doesn’t disappoint. Niagara Falls is nice, but these falls are gorgeous with the setting being perfect. Expect a nice walk on paved paths. Views along the way are great.

Beautiful

By cjb526 |

Beautiful falls, even in the rain. the walk to the falls is't too far and it's paved. Nice gift shops and the restaurant looked good, but we didn't eat there.

"Root Beer" Falls

By NYTravelerBD |

The upper falls were very powerful and impressive, although my wife was turned off by the brown water flowing from the falls, which she quipped reminder her of something grosser than root beer.

The falls were quite photogenic, but I wish that the park would more properly maintain the overgrown foliage that prevents a clear view of the falls from the viewing platform. The overgrown branches and leaves were quite annoying and messed up my photos.

Powerful, impressive falls!

By eet2live |

The upper falls are quite impressive. The water pours over the lip and drops fifty feet where it thunders into the riverbed below. If you like waterfalls, I think you'll like this one. The hike out to the falls was nice also, winding through the quiet, dense, northern Michigan forest for a half mile or so. The stairway down to the falls is well-made and fits into the forest setting. It is wide and sturdy, made out of steel and timbers. The observation platform is long and on multiple levels, and lets you get right down near the top of the falls.

The lower falls were enjoyable also, and the gift shop is nice, but the upper falls were the best.

We did not take any of the many other trails, but the State Park offers a wide selection of hiking trails through heavily forested areas. If we had had more time, we would have liked to sample some of them.

Put this on your bucket list

By Holly B |

Such an Outstanding and beautiful place. The falls ate amazing, the weather was great. Easy access for young and older.

Lower falls is beautiful!

By RachaelMarie |

We loved the lower falls and the little island. If you don't rent a boat, be warned, that it is a challenge to walk across the water and to the island. I fell no less than twice. My husband and kids didn't have any issues. But the island is great - there are areas to play in the falls. Parents, please watch your children. We saw many children next to the edge of the falls - the falls are beautiful and fun, but also deadly. Another one was running in the falls (about 2-3), slipped (it's slippery) and cracked his head really hard. He was ok, but that is a reminder to treat the falls with respect. No running, I would recommend water shoes, and keep tight reigns on your kiddos - it's for their safety. Bring a towel, be prepared to get wet if you want to have some fun, and even a snack would be good.

Lower falls to upper falls perfect hike

By Tom T |

Hiked 4 mile route from lower falls to upper falls and back with stop for a beer at upper falls brewery. Hike said primitive trail but really more of a moderate trail. Somewhat muddy areas and some up and down with lots of tree roots. Suggest hiking boots and take water, We are in our sixties and did the 8 miles no problem. Perfect Oct. weather and colors were stunning. Great hike. You can drive to both lower and uppers falls viewing area and many did and walked around with children,

Right here in Michigan

By Mahodawn |

The upper falls were beautiful. I guess I was a little underwhelmed after seeing Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. It’s nice these are in Michigan.

Nice area

By greeneyes630 |

Very nice easy walking area. Gift shop and bathrooms available. There’s several large stairs for better viewing access. 100 steps, 181 steps. There’s a shuttle that will take you to both falls. We drove and easily found parking. I’m not adding photos, mine aren’t better than those already shown.

Impressive falls, grandeur enhanced by fall foliage. Crazy busy during our visit.

By ImmerWandern |

We visited the state park for the waterfall, specifically the Upper Falls which are the primary attraction around which the state park was created.

As an out-of state visitor I had to purchase an annual pass to the Michigan State Parks; the upper falls area was so packed that we had to park on the street leading to to the fall. There was a long line of vehicles leading to the booth at the entrance. On the way back we ran into a state park ranger placing tickets on cars parked on the street leading to the parking area. We approached her stating we had wanted to buy a pass. She took cash, gave us the pass to affix to the windshield and came with us to our car where she took the ticket and tore it up.

Back to the upper falls. These are the 3rd largest falls east of the Mississippi, 200 feet wide and 50 feet tall. They apparently also have the nickname of “Rootbeer Falls” thanks to the brown-colored water. Tannins leached from the surrounding forests and marshes are responsible for the color.

There are 2 main viewpoints for the falls, the overlook platform right at the falls and another one downstream. There are several spots along the paved trail downhill with views of the upper falls.

We did not hike the other trails and did not make it down to the lower falls.

The trees’ leaves had started to turn and there were enough fall colors to add even more to the already impressive scenery. Not surprising, then, that there were so many visitors here to savor the beauty The upper overlook was packed, not all were wearing masks, but there was a stiff breeze that fall afternoon. Strongly suggest arriving early if visiting in the fall.

The best

By LisaMNUSA |

We were visiting up peninsula for a week, saw several water falls. This water falls is the best. It was the biggest water fall we have seen on this trip. You can see the falls from different angles. I enjoyed watch both upper falls and lower falls. The trail that onnects lower falls and upper fall is 4 miles one way, we didn't have time to take the trail, so we drove to each location. there is a parking lot in each location, and its just a short walk to see the water falls.

Beautiful park with two waterfalls

By Sue Richter |

This park had two beautiful waterfalls just a few miles apart. For the true nature lover and hiker there is a trail about 4 miles long from one fall to the other fall. At the high falls area there is also a brewery and pub that we loved. We will go back again.

Beautiful waterfalls.

By Fred O. Maples |

I stopped up here during a road trip through The Upper Peninsula. These falls are the big ones they say of Michigan. It’s a beautiful area just to be near the falls and in nature. Give yourself some time to explore this entire park. I recommend it.

Nature’s Glory at its Finest

By Mary A |

If you get a chance to visit this State Park in mid-October, you will see some of the most beautiful fall colors of the year.

Visit both the upper and lower falls

By Garden guy |

Both the upper and lower falls are very scenic. Be aware that the restrooms at the lower falls are under construction and there are only four port-a-potties. Two were locked and the other two needed to be emptied.

Nice state park with good views and hiking

By Tom |

There is a $9 entrance fee for a day pass and it's worth it. I recommend stopping at both the lower falls and the upper falls. You can do some hiking in the area, but the shuttle isn't running between the two areas of the falls (4-mile hike one way). The boat rentals and store at the lower falls were closed, but this could be a nice activity on a summer day. Well worth the stop on a drive along south Lake Superior.

A can't miss experience for the family

By dstampor |

Just an absolute blast for the whole family. Went with my wife and 11 year old and spent a solid 4-6 hours checking out the upper falls and the lower falls. The upper falls are beautiful and scenic, to be viewed at a distance. The lower falls involve a rowboat ride (I think you can pay to have someone boat you over too, but we rowed ourselves) for a more immersive viewing of the lower falls from the boat, or take it ashore a small island where you can walk around. Here you can partake in the fun stone structure builds, or, some people go for a trip behind the falls. Our 11 year old had a fantastic time. We all did. Beautiful, refreshing, and a good little workout. There are a bunch of waterfalls int he UP, but these are probably the best. A must if you visit the Upper Peninsula.

Amazing

By Rachel C |

This was the highlight of our trip. My kids and I enjoyed the view and well as the opportunity to play in the lower falls. We will visit again.

Michigan's greatest falls

By Jim K |

Haven't been here in over 20 year's.. Such a beautiful place well worth the drive. Make sure.you check out both the upper and lower falls !

Beautiful

By Brian R |

Gorgeous waterfalls in the UP of Michigan. The upper falls is a short distance from parking. There is a paved walk with lookouts. A 90+ step stairway will get you up close to this large waterfall. Go down another path for a 181 step staircase gets you to a little different view from down the river gorge. The lower falls are nice but are 4 miles away. You can hike or drive, or hike 1 way and for a fee you can grab a shuttle back. The lower falls have a little longer walk. You can now access the island by a new bridge and explore the falls up close.
Back in the lot by the upper falls they have restrooms, a lodge with food and drink and gift shops. They are in the process of building more by the lower falls. Beautiful area!

Gorgeous Unique Falls

By luvthingsold |

Gorgeous Falls that we have enjoyed both times we have visited. Day pass was $11.00 for out of state. That is fee for both upper and lower falls which is in two locations. Or you can hike the four miles in between. Note that as of this review both areas were under renovation to take out steps and provide accessible wood walkways. Lower falls has full walkway for all views and out across bridge to Island. Upper falls viewable in two locations with walkway which was steps in places under renovation and blocked to go down further. Indicates on signage to be completed by August 2026. Would not miss this even with construction at upper falls. Will be great to have accessible trail in future. Also many trails with plenty of opportunities for hiking, public restrooma on site and food at upper falls available when we visited. Gift shop closed as it was out of season. Color was also gorgeous as it is fall.

First time at Tahquamenon!

By lilhouseinthewoods |

The falls, Lower and Upper, are stunning. It's not just something to look at, but to experience. The trails to the falls are paved and an easy walk. The hike is as enjoyable as the falls. I LOVE the woods in Michigan!

My husband opted to hike between the Lower and Upper Falls which is about 4 miles. The trail has medium difficulty but he enjoyed it.

Restrooms are provided at both falls.

Nice

By Bob T |

There are actually several falls here at two locations. Nice large viewing areas accessed by paved walks, but some of them are partly obstructed by trees that detract from an otherwise very user friendly and pleasant visit. Nice facilities, so-so restaurant.

Tahquamenon Falls is worth the drive

By mgabbard |

Tahquamenon Falls is definitely worth checking out if you are in the U.P. It's about a 90 minute drive from both the Mackinac Bridge from the south, and about 90 minutes from Sault Ste. Marie to the east. You can make a short afternoon trip of it if you just want to see the upper falls and get some lunch, or you can make an entire day of it if you want to hike the entire trail path. There is a fantastic sit-down restaurant at the park entrance that has one of the best pasties in the U.P. and their whitefish is excellent. There is also an outdoor snack counter with ice cream and other snacks, and a decent souvenir shop with t-shirts and the like. The walk to the upper falls from the parking area is only about 5 minutes. There are spots below, at, and above that give great views of the falls from the north side. The walking trails are very well maintained and are handicapped accessible.

Falls that ALL people can access!

By Jennifer O |

Bring bug spray for the lower falls!
We have hiked many places in different states and Michigian does an OUTSTANDING job at making the trails accessible to ALL people! I LOVED seeing the wheel chairs available at the upper falls. I loved there was boardwalks at the lower falls. This was a highlight of our trip and well worth the hiking we did.

A spectacular hike to enjoy beautiful fall foliage. The waters are such a unique color and trees in full color.

Niagara of Michigan

By Justin P |

Tahquamenon Falls is the "Niagara of Michigan", the highest volume waterfall in Michigan. The state park contains two waterfalls. The Upper Falls is the big one, a 50-foot high and 200-foot wide waterfall with average flow of 50,000 gallons per second. The Lower Falls is a series of cascades around an island. Canoes can be rented to paddle out to the island. A 4-mile trail connects the two waterfalls or you can drive between the two. My only complaint is that the park is super crowded. We visited on a weekday and it was still extremely crowded. If I visited again, I would try to get there early to beat the crowds.

As always...

By Dwight L |

This is a place to see. Came here as a teen with family and this is the first time returning over 60 years between and it is as it was back then!! Even though the colors were a bit late this year in the UP this place is a must see. You have two sets of falls, the upper and lower falls a few miles apart. You can actually hike from one to the other, if you are prepared for a arduous and long hike. Otherwise, there is plenty of ways to see them. Lot of stairs to climb at both Falls, but worth every step.

Ease

By Ashley Gaines-Conte |

Pleasantly surprised by the ease of the visit. This park is laid out very well, and makes it easy for people of all abilities to see the beauty of the falls without worry or struggle. Loved the walkways through the woods to the different look out areas. If I was a local, I think I would find myself here often.

Top 10 must see UP attractions!

By k c |

Beautiful! Top 10 must see in the UP. We did the both the Upper and Lower Falls. I don’t know how to improve on what others have said. It is located in a state park, so you will a pass to gain access. We stayed on the covered paths, even though there are hiking trails that veered off. We spent a couple hours touring both falls.

Beautiful

By Joan S |

Beautiful scenery. Nice hiking trails. Dogs friendly. There is a lot of steps if you want to go to the bottom viewing platform.

Amazing

By rdvance |

It's a little out of the way, but I'm sure glad we made the trip. Easy walk for the upper falls and it really does look like root beer. Be sure to pack the bug spray (goes for all the UP) and they do swarm you.

Beautiful

By bobber84mn |

I love waterfalls! This was no exception. It was quite a hike to view the upper falls, but definitely worth it. We also visited the lower falls, but did not explore too far because it looked like there was a lot of walking involved.

Worth the trip!

By Letitia S |

Beautiful! I hadn’t been in years. So proud of our state parks. Asphalt paths make it easy for those who are less able to see the natural beauty that are these Falls.

Beautiful falls in Paradise, MI

By Jackie F |

Beautiful falls, easy walk (can't call it a hike). There is a nature trail from the lower viewwwing area back to the parking lot. Highly recommend the nature trail rather than the paved trail. Very scenic.

Natural Beauty

By pie18320 |

Said to be the 2nd largest East of the Mississippi, it is an inspiring sight to see. You then need to go a few more miles and see the lower falls too.

TFSP

By theoljohnnyboy |

Our second visit here. The place was unbelievably crowded for a random Thursday in August! A spot did open up quickly, and we felt that it was well worth the $9 price of admission to enjoy the falls. The view on the deck right beside the platform is most enjoyable, listening to the falls and trying the appreciate the decieving size was interesting!

Beautiful falls - not a welcoming community.

By Michelle B |

The falls are beautiful. Unfortunately, the neighbors on private land on the main road leading into the park make their politics clearly known, and it feels incredibly unwelcoming to anyone not of their same point of view. The park has good accessible trails, but it was surprising how many people were letting their kids go into the falls area - it's dangerous and while there are many signs, there was no enforcement of the rules.

Beautiful.

By John G |

These are beautiful waterfalls. Go see both upper and lower falls. It's a short walk (about 1/4 to 1/2 mile. It is handicap acceptable except for the stairs to the upper falls.

Hike or not

By R3514RTjessicac |

We live only 30 minutes from the fall so we visit often. Lately we've hiked between the falls which considering the rain we've been receiving was a wet mess but we were really happy to see the various forms of repair that has been keeping the trail safe for even our toddler who likes to hike by himself.

Lovely Walk to Falls

By PasssionateTraveler |

Two falls here (upper and lower). Short walk to both. We liked the upper falls because you can get so much closer. Must walk about 1/2 mile. There are a few overlooks along the way but go to the last one, then walk down about 90 stairs but worth it. It appears many turn this into a day trip hanging out enjoying the cooler weather and amenities. We were warned of mosquitoes but didn’t experience any. A must do when in the area.

Not too hard to get to in the Upper Peninsular of Michigan

PET FRIENDLY

The views and the quite pet friendly trails were very nice. We have 2 well behaved yorkies that go everywhere we go. Very good store with great prices! Fantastic Brewery on the grounds too was a very nice treat with our picnic lunch.

Upper and Lower Falls

By Twhatty |

It cost a few bucks for our one day pass, but we were able to visit both the Upper and Lower Tahquamenon Falls, with a 5-10 minute drive between the two. There are nice, paved parking areas at each site and it was a fairly short walk to the viewing areas. We took nice photos of the two falls sites on the beautiful day we visited, although I would strongly suggest using insect repellent before you head off to the Falls. There are gift shops, rest rooms and restaurants at both sites. Although my wife and I only spent a hour or so here, it would be easy to spend significantly more time, especially if you wish to do some hiking.

Hike

By darenpadgett76 |

Couple retreat. Great place to amazing views and nature. Easy hike. With some stairs. Inexpensive daily pass. Relaxing

Remote location yet very crowded

By Gorton54 |

After living in Michigan for several decades I finally got to see the famous Tahquamenon Falls and scratch it off my bucket list. After a long drive on route 123 to get here I was surprised to see that a few thousand people beat me here. The parking lot was overflowing but I was lucky to get a handicap space just as someone left. The falls were pretty and the view downstream from the falls was gorgeous. There was a paved walkway which made it easy for me to get my wife to the falls area in a wheelchair. But to get close up required going down 94 steps.
A pass is required for entry. It cost $17 for Michigan residents to get an annual pass to access all State parks. No daily pass is available for Michigan residents but out of staters can get one for $11.

Hike and picnic

By Meg A |

The falls were beautiful, we did not know that they are the second largest falls East of the Mississippi, second only to Niagara Falls. We hiked from lower falls to upper falls then back down. It was a 10 mile total with all of the viewing platforms etc. Trail is muddy and narrow at points with lots of poison ivy and wild raspberries. Would recommend starting early before it gets too hot. Must have a park pass or pay to park at the entry.

Beautiful, lovely walks to both waterfalls!

By friendgetaway |

Sept 11, 2025 we paid $11 per car for a daily, non-resident MI Passport for Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Great time at the Lower Falls--big sign at entrance, gift shop, cafe, picnic area. The 6' wide footbridge was 350' long (installed in 2022) over the Taquamenon River and led to an island in the river. We meandered on the path to several observation platforms with amazing views of the falls, very tall trees, blue sky, white clouds, few red leaves. 5 distinct 15'-20' cascades were separated by small, rocky outcroppings.

Wood sign with Prayer of the Woods, “I am the heat of your hearth on the cold winter nights, the friendly shade screening you from the summer sun, and my fruits are refreshing draughts quenching your thirst as you journey on...” A stainless steel bowl of water on the ground was for pets or unsupervised children! Plan to spend at least 1 hour. Then we drove 15 minutes/4.8 miles to the Upper Falls.

Taquamenon’s Upper Falls (passport works at MI state parks all day) had a wide, paved path 1/4 mile to the overlook. The 200' wide falls drop almost 50'. Locals call it Root Beer Falls since it’s frothy white foam, and the tannins leaching from cedar, spruce and hemlock swamps at the river’s source create a deep amber shade. A 900' new boardwalk is being constructed to replace 94 steps to a breathtaking vantage point. Amenities--restaurant, brewery, picnic area, nice restrooms, gift shop. Plan to spend at least 1 hour.

Visit both upper and lower falls

By Emily M |

We started with the upper falls, then drove to the lower falls. Both were unique and spectacular. The upper falls is the big falls; the lower falls is a big complex of small falls. Plan on 2-3 hours to see both. Highly recommend!

Tahquamenon Falls is a great set of falls that I am glad we finally got to visit.

By Julie H |

Easy hike to the Lower and Upper Falls of the Tahquamenon Falls State Park. We paid a $10 state park daily fee to enter the Lower Falls first and then the Upper Falls was free if done the same day. Both falls were beautiful and we got some good pictures. The Lower Falls is in the process of building a gift shop and restrooms. The stairs can be a little challenging to ascend, but going down was fine. Nicely maintained pathways help alot.

Row, row, row your boat.

By witchbroomstick |

A very little walk to view the falls. If you're in the mood, row the boat to the Island for a closer look at the falls. This part is a must during warm weather.

It's a beautiful place, which makes it popular.

By Have Camera, Will Travel |

Tahquamenon Falls is one of the major attractions of the Upper Peninsula, which makes it a pretty busy place. If you are going in the summer or fall, expect to see a lot of people.
The falls are beautiful. You can see the Lower Falls from a distance with minimal effort. It is a bit of a walk to get up close, but it's mostly boardwalk, so it's not too difficult.
The Upper Falls is a bit of a walk via trails and there are steps involved to get up close. There are areas you can see them without the stairs, but if you can, you should really make the climb.
There is also a trail that connects the Upper and Lower Falls areas. I believe it's about 4 miles one way. We didn't do the trail, but it was tempting. If we were staying a few days, I would have. Obviously, easiest way to see both falls is to drive to each. We were there on a weekday, in the summer, in the afternoon and didn't have an issue parking. I know there is a lot more to the park than the two falls, but they are the main attractions. We were only there for the afternoon, so we just hit the main sites.

Michigan’s Best Waterfall

By Joyce N |

The place is beautiful! I’ve never seen water such a beautiful amber color! Had it not been for my neigh or’s recommendation, we would have missed the gem!

Beautiful, unique falls. Worth the drive.

By 913janellek |

We visited the falls in mid June. It wasn't too busy. We only walked to the falls on the paths and did not hike in the surrounding areas. Those trails seemed to be well marked. There were also boats that you could rent to take across the water, which we did not do. The look out areas give a great view of both the Upper and Lower Falls.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park

Wow. Magnificent Waterfalls. Nice. Simple walk too. Easy.

If you haven't seen Tahquamenon Falls you are missing out!
This is one of the biggest waterfalls in Michigan. Hands down great. Expect to get wet too. The falls is deep, but the surrounding water is OK to dip in.

You will not be disappointed!

Highly Recommended

The Falls have a lot to offer!

By WJA81 |

Enjoyed both the upper and lower falls.A nice amount of walking and stair climbing( especially on upper falls)but the payoff is worth it. Gift shops are both great. Enjoyed the brewery and eating options at the upper falls as well. The blueberry ale is a winner, the sandwiches mouthwatering!

Excellent!!

By tammylm1065 |

We loved it here!! Stayed in lower falls campground in travel trailer w husband n our doggie. Walking distance to lower falls, how much better can you get.

Just Beautiful!

By GrandCayman123 |

We used our state park pass to visit the upper and lower falls. Very pretty. Fun to see all the people enjoying nature with their pets. You can hike but we drove to both falls separately. Plenty of parking at both. There is also some kind of paid shuttle service people can use. Both falls had a gift shop and food. Beware, the upper falls had 98 steps and that is a lot! We ate at the upper falls as it had a sit down restaurant with air conditioning. There was a mini brewery with 3 types of speciality beer and a bar area. Also had a mini gift shop inside. We had to wait a few minutes to be seated for lunch. Reasonable prices and nice portions. My pastie came with a real flower decorating it, very pretty. There were row boats for rent at the lower falls. Looked like fun until we saw a map of the limited area you could row to. Still, families seemed to be enjoying it. We were actually staying in Mackinaw City and even with the additional drive, definitely worth a visit.

Experience the roar of the falls!

By psutuckers |

Wonderful and beautiful experience, would highly recommend! Visited both the Upper and lower falls. Ate lunch at lower falls concession stand, very reasonably priced and very good (pleasantly surprised). Take your camera! So close, we could feel the mist! Was worried about bugs from previous reviews, but didn't see any Labor Day weekend. Would definitely go back when visiting the area. Next time hopefully swimming/wading in the lower falls. Looked like fun!

Easy access to both falls, beautiful fall colors, great viewing points

By GreggMS |

Off the M-123, the first stop is the Lower Falls. The hike to the falls is 1/3 mile and the trail is lined with trees which are beautiful in October. The Upper Falls are 4 miles away so we drove there. Again, an easy leisurely hike to the falls with great views. Best time to go is the first week of October so you can experience the fall colors.

Absolutely Beautiful State Park .... the Falls are awesome

By Joel K |

Nice walks to the Falls. Nice views. Lots to do in the park. Picnic. Camping. Store. Very beautiful site to visit.

Nice waterfalls but skippable for my family

By Theresa C |

We stopped here on our way to Munising. It's a nice walk to the Lower Falls and you can get in the water on the rocks and kind of hang out, but it's not swimming. Water shoes are a must because it's slippery. We saw one little boy slip (he was fine). Then we drove to the Upper Falls, which were nice. My kids and husband were underwhelmed in general. Overall I wouldn't say this was a must stop for my family. My kids enjoyed being in Lake Superior much more than getting in the water here. It was only maybe an hour out of our way, but in hindsight I'd skip it and get to our destination faster and get in the water there. It's a busy destination but I wouldn't say it's too crowded.

Well maintained, beautiful, with an easy hike

By SaltyKansan |

Michigan is a beautiful state outside of metro-land, and Tahquamenon Falls is a highlight of that beauty. This park has excellent and abundant parking at both north and south areas, with many amenities including a gift shop. The hike is well over a mile but mostly flat on the lower portion. If you want to see all angle of the upper falls, there are 200+ stairs in total. Enjoy!

Wished we started with upper Falls

By Hollyhawkskitchen |

We did the lower Falls first but wished we done the upper Falls first. The line is get into the upper park was super long so we left.

Nice place to explore

By elizabethw001 |

This was a nice place to explore
It is clearly marked where to go
The parking lot and path are paved
You could take a stroller all the way to the stairs.
You can see the falls without going down the stairs but of course the view is better at the bottom.

Pretty park

By Cheryl B |

Don’t miss this if nearby. Large well kept park. Great boardwalk trails. Upper Falls are for a look (big and impressive). Lower for splashing in and renting a rowboat. Also lots of hikes, plus shops and snack bars. We spent a few hours and feel we saw highlights but can easily spend longer.

Beautiful Place to Camp/Explore

My parents ended up camping here in August 2019. The campground is beautiful and quiet. I enjoyed driving up.for the day and exploring with them. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys camping and nature.

Take Your Time and Enjoy

By Trevor_from_MI |

This State Park encompasses two of the most scenic falls in Michigan. The Lower Falls are downriver and are a series of smaller cascades while the Upper Falls are 4 miles upstream and a majestic 50-ft drop. I personally find lower falls to be more scenic and beautiful. Both falls have handicap-friendly viewing platforms, but the upper falls is best experienced by going down a set of stairs to the brink.

In late July I did not have an issue with insects, but at other times of year mosquitos or flies may require spray. Be sure to check the Park website prior to your trip. There are daily Park Ranger talks at various locations in the park, but we were not able to make it to any of them. The gift shops are large and well-stocked too.

The upper falls can be seen in less than an hour but I recommend taking your time at the lower falls. Rent a rowboat ($20) or in late summer when the water is low enough, wade out to the island at lower falls and walk around. There are more cascades to see from the island than can be seen up close from the mainland. This is definitely a "stop and smell the roses" place, you don't want to feel rushed to experience lower falls.

Nice walk through the fall woods

By Pamela K |

Pretty falls, both the upper and lower falls. Both were a easy walk on paved footpath. Nice state park for an afternoon

Massive Fall Crowds!

By Pam |

Go early, pick a less traveled hike, and get out before the afternoon crowd arrives! Don’t expect to find inexpensive gas anywhere near the park! Plan ahead

Amazing Hike for Late August 2023

By Scott R |

We hiked Upper Falls to Lower Falls on Aug 27th. It was about 65 degrees and sunny. It had not rained for a few days. Our hike took just under 3 hours parking lot to parking lot. Fortunately, we were wearing hiking shoes which we highly recommend. The trail has quite a few ups and downs--sometimes with stairs, sometimes not. You need to be in reasonable health to undertake this hike. There are no facilities its entire length and cellphone coverage is very spotty. That said, it was a beautiful hike and we highly recommend it. Surprisingly, there were no insects and traffic on the trail was minimal. The shuttle service returned us to our vehicle.

Excellent stop in the Michigan Upper Penninsula

By Efi C |

Our first time in the U, P, and this was a great stop. The falls are amazing. It definitely has trails for short walks.
If you are planning to use a grill for lunch, bring your own. Not a lot of picnic tables, so plan accordingly.

I would definitely go back during the fall when all the leaves are multi colored.

Must see,dog friendly.Start at lower falls first.

By Shirley A |

Busy in the summer, dog friendly.Wear bug spray. You can hike from lower falls to higher falls about 4 miles. Or drive.

Best falls in the U.P.

By Matthew L |

Taquamenon Falls state park is located in northeastern U.P. We started at the lower falls and walked to the far viewing platform. Nice easy walk and awesome view of the falls. Start your trip early on weekends because the parking lot started filling up at around 10am on Saturday. Our second stop was at the upper falls. The walk to the last viewing platform is down 94 steps. Be careful because some of the wooden steps are slippery when wet. Hold on to the handrails. Make sure if you are in an out of state vehicle to ask for your vehicle pass when you pay your $9 entrance fee. We did not know that we were supposed to get a pass when we paid and luckily a lady working at the gift shop told us to ask for one before we drove to the upper falls parking area. This is a must see if you are in the U.P.

All the beautiful in the world have mosquitos

By Ashley |

Hike to the upper falls it a very short and paved trail. It leads to a beautiful waterfall. If you are in the area, it is a nice little day trip. Bring some bug spray though

Underwhelming overpriced

By Jerry S |

To be fair we only did the lower falls (mobility issues). But the cost for this experience was way too high. A trickle of a waterfall far from the observation point. Left us feeling underwhelmed to say the least.

If you plan to just experience the lower falls I would suggest just skipping it altogether.

Michigan fall trip

By jeant548 |

My husband and I visited the first week in October and were able to enjoy the beautiful foliage already changing in the upper peninsula. Tahquamenon Falls State Park is a must see. Lots to see and do. Waterfalls, hiking. Enjoyed a nice lunch in the State Park restaurant. It's very clean and a well maintained park.

Well worth the drive!!!!

By Patricia F |

The power of this waterfall!!! Wow!!! It is an easy hike back to the falls, with multiple viewing sites.

Extremely popular park. By Fritomann

By Fritomann |

We came on a hot day in July. 2021. There were only 5 or 6 cars in front of us, and of course, everyone had to wait for the driver at the head of the line who didn't have 9 bucks in cash and was using a credit card to pay the entrance fee. Sheesh.
It's an easy walk down the trail to the Upper Falls, and then you have to climb down 94 steps to the base of the falls. And then back up the steps. It was pretty easy, even for senior citizens like us.
The trails and overlooks were crowded with families, kids, dogs on leash, all very nice. The falls are pretty great, and people watching is nice too.

Afterwards we drove down the road to the lower falls where there is another gate but this one was included in the State park day pass so all we had to do is wait for another cashless Joe to pay with a credit card.

Beautiful Fals

By Nick K |

The falls were beautiful however the hike from the lower falls to the main waterfall have very muddy and fallen apart trails where the sign said it was 4 miles;however, it was much more than that so we had to turn back around because it had already been over 4 hours of hiking.

Beautiful falls

By Renae H |

Nice hike to the falls. Bring bug spray. The hike from the lower falls to the upper is 4 miles but you can drive to them as well and the signs are clearly marked on the roads.

Disappointed

By Bill L |

Disappointed. We came up from southern WI on Tuesday 8/18/20. There was a sign at the Upper Falls turnoff saying "Parking Lot Full", with around 30 cars on the road waiting to get in. We drove 3 miles North to the Lower Falls road, same Full Lot situation. So we went up to the Whitefish Point Maritime Museum and had a great time. On the way back 2 hours later, we again tried to get into the Falls. Still backed up, Lot still full. Too many people.

By Rick R |

We had a spectacular time! Be sure to visit the Lower Falls and bring a swimsuit. Cross the bridge (about 3/4 mile) and then wade in the water to your delight. We climbed underneath the falls and witnessed first-hand the power of the water! We were disappointed the steps to the Upper Falls were closed but look forward to visiting again when the work is done.

worthwhile walks for viewing

By Diane W |

Upper and Lower falls. Both beautiful. 3/4 mile walk from parking to upper falls. Lower falls have less of a walk. Lower falls are having construction done for new restrooms and visitor center probably done by summer 2023. Upper Falls already has that and a nice store and brew pub/restaurant with good food and friendly staff. You can even hike from one to the other falls, but you would have to walk back to get your car, I guess.

Beautiful All Year Round

By sland1225 |

Tahquamenon Falls are beautiful no matter what time of year you chose to visit. There are nice pathways and trails to walk and several scenic overlooks for photos of the falls and your group. There are several stairs to get down to the top of the falls, but are easy to walk and have handrails and landings. There is also a restaurant on the site for visitors, as well as wheelchairs available for those with mobility issues.

Must see waterfall of Michigan!

By scelestini83 |

Awesome...just awesome! We visited on Fathers Day and it wasn’t that busy. It’s a short hike to the falls. You can hear their roar as you get closer. There are several lookout points for photo ops. Definitely bring your camera! Also bring bug spray! There’s a stairway that leads you closer to the falls..do that! It’s worth it! They have a nice gift shop and snack bar. Their bathrooms are also very clean

Visually Pleasing

By Arlene |

Every bit of this fall was beautiful, lower and upper. Went with two Besties, two teens, a 9 and 12 year old. It was beautiful and the walk through nature was so awesome. If you have not seen this, it is a must - truly spectacular. The train and the boats were not running when I went on August 18th but the sunset walk was pleasant and visually pleasing.

Don't Miss It

By Dave48838 |

We had an enjoyable afternoon at the falls on an autumn day. The colors were full and the crowds were sparse. The park has good parking and is handicapped accessible. I had hurt my knee and we took advantage of the free wheel chairs at the beginning of the path. There is also a gift shop and a place to get a bite to eat. Interpretive boards and displays were well done. The viewing does not take a long time so make room for it on your itinerary.

Great!

By hinerism |

just a great place to visit. a can't miss attraction if your in the area. It's a nice walk to the falls.

Proof that there are elevation gains & losses in MI

By Camper812306 |

easy short walks to the upper & lower falls provide multi-faceted viewpoints of both areas. You can drive or (arduously) hike between the 2 falls.Shuttles are available too. Both spots have extensive gift shops - 2 of the most extensive I've ever seen in any public park. The gift shop at the upper falls is 2 stories - truly unexpected and amazing for this sparsely populated area. Wear insect repellent and/or mesh net over your head in warm weather.

Beautiful waterfall with color matching the fall foliage surrounding it

By Kiiirtiii |

Very beautiful. We went to several viewpoints, taking turns to carry our 1 year old and being led the way by hyperactive 6 year old. Wonderful to see the falls in an orange brown shade. Beautiful fall colors around it.

Excellent vacation

By rb_dowg |

The campground is quite beautiful and clean. For the most part large sites that drain great when it rains hard.
We spent 10 days there and never lacked for a great activity.
The hiking trails kept us busy enough at the park, and the waterfalls were great. There are a lot of steps involved to view some of the falls so be prepared with good footwear and water.
You can rent a rowboat to visit a small island near the falls or you can use your own kayak/canoe/raft to get there as well. However, there are no good access points to get in the wate.
We also spent some time driving around the area. We visited Whitefish Point, Timber
Charlie's Restaurant (so-so food), Pictured Rocks Nat'l Lakeshore, Sable Falls and Grand Sable Dunes. We kayaked a portion of the Tahquamenon River and that was a nice peaceful paddle and there was an access point not far from the S.P. The brewery at the S.P. was a nice break after a long hike. This is a great place for couples, singles and families.
Be cautious of the water you purchase in the area. The stores closest to the park sell local water and has quite a sulphur odor and taste. We found it better to purchase water on our out of park excursions at larger stores.
Firewood is plentiful and not horribly expensive just a quarter mile from the park entrance.

Visits the falls, then get off the beaten path

By LittlePaint |

Understandably, there's were lots of people at both the Upper & Lower Falls. They are gorgeous and with the visit.

But it's way too crowded.

See the falls then find a trail, any trail really, and enjoy the forest. Most visitors see the falls and call it good. The rest of the park is fairly deserted.

The Rivermouth campground was nice and had any exceptional area for primitive camping.

A state park for all seasons

By Karen O |

We were amazed on our visit to the falls. Both upper and lower falls. This is well worth a visit to see. This was our first visit and we really enjoyed it. Easy to see and if you are a photographer you will love it. If you like to hike there are several hikes to different views of the falls. We plan to visit in every season.

Brief Hike | Big Amazing Waterfall

By Steven D |

We “tacked on” this stop at the Upper Falls location after spending all day driving back and forth to visit to must-see lighthouse stations (Crisp Point & Whitefish Point). So we arrived late afternoon around 4:30 pm but the short 1/4 mile hike out to the waterfall overlook stations left us plenty of time to enjoy the amazing views and capture lots of photo memories. There are additional trail routes available to those seeking greater adventures.

The Lower Falls section of the State Park (entrance three miles up the road — offers the longest trails and time commitment for those planning an all-day excursion.

Take some time at Tahquamenon

By Monique K |

We viewed both the Upper Falls and Lower Falls of Tahquamenon. Spent about 90 minutes at the Upper Falls including the viewing (which you can do in less than an hour) and a relaxing break at the visitor's center which has a tourist shop, a coffee / ice cream kiosk and a beer garden restaurant with a full menu. The Lower Falls took us more than two hours to visit. You can take a quick peak at both Upper and Lower with a visit of less than 90 minutes but to fully appreciate the area, allow yourself at least three hours total and I would recommend four hours for a full, leisurely experience. The Upper Falls offers views of the iconic tall water fall which is impressive. We were surprised that we enjoyed the Lower Falls more than the Upper Falls. The Lower Falls has a long trail that goes through the woods and onto the island, with views of many smaller falls and other interesting formations. There are spots where you can wade into the water if you like. Restrooms are available at both Upper and Lower. The Lower Falls also had a cafe and plenty of picnic tables.

Beautiful

By lynn07141215 |

The falls were beautiful and the walk was easy for us. We enjoyed the scenery and the restaurant. We do wish that the restaurant had WiFi so that we were able to get our maps loaded before we left. The beer was good we wish they would have had more than 2.

Breathtaking views

By lawtonjl2002 |

As part of our bus tour we had a guided tour of the falls. So educational to learn about some of the local trees and how one of them gives the falls the brownish color.

very beautiful, especially hiking along the waterfalls, just be aware mosquitos can get incredibly annoying to say the least. We went in June and the weather was great but with warm weather come lots and lots of mosquitos. Still worth it though.

One of the better waterfalls you can go to

By Matt |

I ended up going to the upper and lower falls. There is a trail you can take and walk to both which I attempted to do. But if it rained hard it gets a little too difficult to walk it. So I ended up just driving to both. The bigger waterfall is up top. You can really only view it from a distance as far as I saw. They were in the middle of construction when I went, so maybe they’re maybe a closer viewing area I’m not sure. The upper falls was also much quieter as not many people seem to go there. I do think the lower falls were better overall. There were more waterfalls to see there, and you are even able to swim in them if you wanted to. It is much more crowded, so odds are there will be people in your pictures. Guessing you’ll have to get there right as the park opens to get pictures without a crowd in them. I’d definitely recommend this one if you’re looking for waterfalls you can get closer to. Also seems like a popular choice for families since you can swim there. It’s also not a crazy hike to see either of these. You can get to them in maybe 15-20 minutes from the parking lot.

Beautiful

By Shannon M |

As always, tahquanmenon falls never disappoints. It is very beautiful and mesmerizing to watch the water fall down on both the upper and lower falls. There are also some hiking trails which are fun to hike through.

Enjoyed the visit

By Dorothy H |

The falls are beautiful. One person in our party has walking difficulties, we ordered a special device with a motor that made it possible for him to enjoy the falls and trails with the rest of us. This was at no cost. There was a place to eat, which made our visit pleasant.

Serene

By Doug R |

Despite a lot of people visiting the Falls that day, it was quiet and peaceful. The sign saying its 92 steps to the viewing area should be corrected, its more...and thats 92+ STAIRS, not counting the steps to get to those.

Road trip around Lake Superior

By alpw |

My husband and I were on a road trip around Lake Superior and we stopped near here for an overnight stay. We decided since the falls were so close and it had been many many years since we've both seen the falls. We started with the lower falls and then worked our way up to the upper. We didn't hike between the falls since we were expected elsewhere later that day. Both falls have paved walkways down to the falls, and the upper falls had a observation deck near the water but require stairs to get to it. There's about 75-100 stairs, but if you have difficulty with stairs, you can see the falls without doing the stairs. Well worth the stroll to see the falls.

Pretty waterfalls and hiking, but busy campground!

By Tammy S |

On M123 enter at the sign "Lower Falls - Tahquamenon" if you are camping at Hemlock or Portage camgrounds. We camped in site 126 in the Lower Falls Hemlock campground with a 26ft. camper. This site was very private, unlock all of the inside site. Other sites that looked decent were 105, 109, 110, 112, 169, 171, 173, 181. Our kids were ages 11, 14 and 16.
You can hike the trail to the Lower Falls starting by campsite 125 and to the right towards sign "16". It is a nice wooded and sandy trail. Walk .3 miles to the "16" sign, then another .3 miles to the left to the "13" sign. Walk along the boardwalk and when it ends, you can cross the river to the island - it is only knee deep at it's deepest. Don't pay for a row boat, walking across is just as easy. We walked through the river a little before getting on the island and hiking that trail. Kids were swimming in the water all around the island. Then we hiked towards sign "14" by the bathrooms and took the trail towards "15" and walked right back to near site 125. (.7 miles) The total hike was very sandy and full of pine needles, lots of stairs, but we never saw any nature- animals.
There is only 1 bathroom/shower house and the showers are in separate rooms which we like. Very hot water!
We explored out of the campground and Clark Lake Roard to a small parking area by Clark Lake - this road was very narrow and sandy. We carried our kayaks the 1/4 mile to the lake which was VERY disappointing - it was basically a small pond with tons of mosquitos. There was no wildlife to be seen. My husband got off his kayak and walked through the marsh to try to find the portage trail to Betsy Lake but never found it. Complete bust - don't waste your time.
We then drove to the Rivermouth Campgound area and launched our kayaks at the boat launch across the street. We kayaked up the Tahquamenon River about 1 hour to where we could see the campsites at Rivermouth, then turned around. Not much of a current. We saw muskrats, geese, a mink and turtles - very beautiful area!
We drove back to the Lower Falls Parking lot which was packed, and the little gift shop was completely packed and I was not impressed with the overpriced products there. There was concessions and ice cream but due to the large crowd of people, we chose to leave. There is a very large hill to bike up when you leave the Lower Falls and bike back to Hemlock!
We drove to the Upper Falls and again the parking lot was packed. We walked to short path and down the stairs to the Brink View - you are right above the falls basically. Very pretty view! We skipped the Gorge View as we felt we had seen enough. We didn't spend much time here since we preferred the Lower Falls and getting into the water. There was a large awesome gift shop at the Upper Falls!

Very touristy area. Probably won't return. We prefer a quieter environment.

Love this place

By ChristineBrown92 |

A must visit. Go to both the upper and lower falls. Nice wide, flat trails. There are options if you want to go further with stairs, but this is totally worth the trip here.

Beautiful

By cadillacandchevy |

There are modern bathrooms at the trail head and it's approximately 1/4 mile to the stairs. You can go left or right and down stairs on either side. There are viewing areas along the way so you don't have to use the stairs to see the falls. It's a short and beautiful hike. There is a privately owned brewery/concessions before the hike.

Beautiful falls - restaurant is shaky though

A little crowded but the falls were beautiful and a short hike, Was disappointed in the brewery though as we changed our schedule on their advice to be able to eat outside, (order take out and eat at the picnic tables outside the entrance ) and when we returned although they were no longer busy they stated they were no longer doing takeout orders as they had been too busy earlier - first of all - arent restaurants in business to be busy and secondly, arent we in a pandemic and told to eat outside. Definitely check out the falls - skip the brewery/restaurant.

Best of Michigan

This is an absolutely beautiful state park. The routes to the falls are easily accessible. This was our first time here. Been waiting for years to see the falls. Beautiful. The park is easy to find. The staff are helpful and friendly. We didn't get to go into the park store as we arrived fairly late. Great visit regardless.

Great Day, would bring the family back.

Really enjoyed it here. We parked at lower falls, walked the 4 miles to upper and there had a beer, listened to live music, and got some yummy soft tacos from a stand. In the UP the whole time there weren't alot of restaurant options let alone safer outdoor seating - so to surprisely to find a great place to hang after seeing waterfalls and a doing a hike was a real treat.

Then we hiked the 4 miles back - the trail between the two was about two hours each way and some of the trail was washed out so muddy. Not a place I'd want kids if they only had one pair of shoes for the trip. But we did NOT have any issues with bugs, didn't even pull out repellent, and it wasn't too crowded and at least some of it is near the river with pretty views. If the shuttles had been running we probably would have preferred to hike just one way.

We had a challenge finding any breakfast on the way up for the day - apparently there is only one restaurant that serves breakfast in Paradise and it's closed on Tuesdays. That seemed odd given the amount of tourists that pass through. So good to keep that in mind if you are visiting.

Lovely falls and hike

We parked at the lower falls and hiked up to upper falls. It was a little more than four miles. Lovely views along the way. We took the shuttle back to get back to the lower falls. It was a wonderful experience for us.

Upper and Lower Falls Worth a Visit!

By Brooke F |

Both Upper and Lower Tahquamenon Falls exceeded my expectations. We started at Upper Falls, which was a short paved walk from the parking lot. (An out-of-state park pass was $10/car for 1 day. $36 for an annual pass, so decide based on whether you plan to visit multiple state parks on different days.)

Our visit was in July, but I was still impressed with the amount of water flow at Upper Falls. There were look outs for pictures, but it is so much better from the top of the falls, so I recommend taking the 94 steps down (modern sturdy stairs with railings and landings). They weren't very strenuous and I'm not physically fit. The Upper Falls also featured clean, modern restrooms by the parking lot.

We drove to the Lower Falls instead of walking 4+ miles on an unpaved trail. There were several viewing points a short distance on the trail of multiple smaller falls. It was absolutely serene and wooded. The trail was paved and included an accessible walking bridge over to an island with a loop trail. I recommend all of it. The island trail was not handicap accessible but was not strenuous. Very doable for all types of people.

We spent 2 hours total at Upper and Lower Falls (the majority at Lower Falls). I don't recall any stairs at Lower Falls until after the walking bridge. Upper Falls was less crowded, and we saw people of all ages at both locations.

good falls easily accessible on short paved paths

These are fairly good size waterfalls, both lower and upper, accessed from different parking lots. There are good asphalt paved paths to overlooks about 200 yards from the falls. There is one trail that goes close to Upper Falls, but it was closed. There are visitor centers with gift shops. Admission is around $10 per car.

Upper Penninsula splendor

Stayed nearby at Paradise Lakefront Inn, excellent hotel, cute town. Loved the onsite restaurant as well. Excellent view of Lake Superior and convenient location to Tahquamenon Falls. Watched the sunrise from the shore front beach chairs while enjoying our complementary coffee and breakfast! The Falls were amazing, got our steps in hiking up and down them. Loved that you could get up close at some parts. The colors of the water and velocity of movement were spectacular!

Amazing

This place is amazing. The iron color in the water makes it look so unique. I would recommend visiting this landmark or at least putting it on your bucket list.

Beautiful Upper Falls

We're from FL, so we had to purchase the $9 recreational passport to be able to enter the park. It was packed, but really didn't feel that busy. There's a gift/souvenir shop there as well if you're looking to do some souvenir shopping. The Lower Falls was packed with people swimming. We weren't aware that people were allowed to swim in the falls and river, and it kind of detracted from the experience of a state park. Luckily, the Upper Falls had no swimmers and it was peaceful and beautiful. The paths are paved and easy to walk on. The mosquitoes weren't bad at all either (we went the last week of July). If you're looking for something a little more peaceful, just skip the Lower Falls and go straight to the Upper Falls.

Took our 17, 15 yr old boys and 10 yr old daughter to both the Lower and Upper Falls. Amazing! Be sure to rent a row boat at the Lower Falls and go to the island. Wade upstream. Water shoes recommended.

Stunning views

Great park with easy walks around the two falls. Add a little extra effort to take the walkway to the lower view of the upper falls. Stunning in the fall.
