Not a destination

By Joyce G |

If you’re driving through Lubbock this is worth a stop. There’s some memorabilia but it’s not displayed very well, the informational writing is at the back of the window cases making it very hard to read. And some of the cases have no explanation. They have a brief movie which was interesting. And the house next-door is where he wrote some of his hits.

Buddy Holly

By Tom B |

Place was very clean looked almost brand new and RENEE was very helpful. Paying admission also gave you a discount on the Lubbock old airport glider museum.
Lots of stuff about Buddy, really liked this venue.

Sparse but key

By Thomas M |

A bit disappointing. Watched the video and looked around. If you have ever been to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, or to the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, this is sort of a let down. But, then, what I came to realize was that there can't be much because he died so young! He was only 22 at the time of the crash. The center is a tribute to the impact that he made on rock and roll in just the very short time that he was performing. His music and the impact really does live on. Disappointing that as sparse as it is they do not allow any photography. If in Lubbock, go ahead and visit the Center - it is educational.

Interesting place

Introductory movie was good & the rest of the display was organized well -- be sure to get the folded paper that tells you what you're looking at in each display case.

Excellent museum on the life and tragic death of Buddy Holly

By Connie W |

So worth stopping in Lubbock to visit this museum. Really enjoyed the film on Buddy's life; he was so talented. Sad that he died so young.

WONDERFUL MUSEUM CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF BUDDY HOLLY

By alaskan_red |

This incredible museum charts the career of the great Buddy Holly, Lubbock's favorite son, through a scene-setting short film with contributions from Paul McCartney and others, and many individual items from Buddy's personal memorabilia, even his guitars, high school diploma, many photographs and his own record collection on display There is an excellent timeline charting the evolution of rock'n'roll per se, which places Buddy's immense contribution and influence in context. We spent two and a half hours here and could easily have stayed longer.

Next door to the center is the original house where Holly's drummer in The Crickets, Jerry (J I) Allison lived. This is presented exactly as it was in the 1950s, when Buddy and Jerry wrote many songs there. You can also listen to an actual recorded telephone call between Buddy and a Decca records executive.

Amazing stuff - an absolute must-visit.

Nostalgic Visit!

By Darlene H |

It was very interesting to visit this museum since my husband and I are from the era of Buddy Holly.
We spent some very leisurely time seeing and reading the exhibits as it is a very small actual museum with an art gallery attached to it.
I don’t know if theJ. I. Allison House where the song “That’ll Be The Day “ was written is open for tours, but it wasn’t when we were there.
I knew that Buddy Holly was young when he was killed, but I didn’t know he was just 22 years old.
The film was interesting.

great museum

By frtliner |

Buddy Holly

We had a large group that was making the rounds in the Depot District and made sure to stop and see this museum. It was very nicely done...spread out and roomy, yet plenty to look at. It was informative and lots of fun.

Great American music museum

By XVictorious |

I wasn’t sure what to expect when we stopped in. We got the half price discount when we visited the Silent Wings Museum, and decided to try the Center. After just a few minutes, I was glad to have stopped in. I learned a lot about American music, and in the wake of Tom Petty’s passing, I learned a lot about Buddy Holly’s influences on American rock in the 50s-70s. The Center is well worth spending an hour there on a trip to Lubbock.

A must for Buddy Holly fans.

By Jeremy C |

Enjoyed seeing the artefacts and learning more about Buddy Holly, especially the film presentation. Low key and small museum but well worth a visit. Obviously an active museum promoting the arts. Low key and unfussy but well worth a visit.

ALL HANDS ON DECK! Show cast visits classy museum!

By DancingEagle71 |

Our cast and crew very much enjoyed learning more about Buddy Holly than we could imagine! A super informative museum about the life and times of Buddy Holly. Especially enjoyed meeting the wonderful staff!

WOW-very informative

By BarbJ816 |

It's small but nice and very well kept. I'm glad that we stopped to check it out. This gave my 12 year old a little history on music.

Must see if in the area

By gatorsos |

A nice small museum they have his telecaster in there and actually his glasses that were recovered in the crash, have a lot of his early momentos from when he was in grade school on up through Highschool, a good history of rock and roll and his influence.have a good movie 18 minutes on a loop where you learn that Paul McCartney and The Beatles said basically they would not be here without Buddy Holly also Keith Richard from The Rolling Stones.. influenced Elton John, Bob Dylan among others. My only criticism is they should allow a non-flash photography. They also have his drummer house that was moved there and restored ,that's pretty neat ,to see the bedroom where they wrote some famous songs

Great piece of History

By Erica M |

The museum staff are very helpful and there's an incredible collection of memorabilia. It's well curated and enjoyable to browse through. You can also visit Jerry Allison's house next-door as part of the tour to see where many of the crickets hits were written. Please note there is no photography allowed inside. There is a nice gift shop with some unique items in it as well.

An Amazing Place

By OnTheRoadAgain1056 |

So much information and exhibits about Buddy Holly that its amazing. Everything from the guitar he is last photographed with before the crash to his original bedroom. You also get to tour the house where some of the music was made and listen to an actual phone call between Buddy and his record company where he is trying to get out of his contract. Don't miss it if your in Lubbock.

Great place to visit

By 156jeffreyd |

Went on tour of the drummer house, found out about of changes to story made in the movie. Loved finding out more about the real person. nice things to see in the museum but would of liked to either be able to take pictures, or to purchase ones of some of the exhibits. Liked seeing the different guitars and his motorcycle

Music and repurposed train depot

By mrosas24 |

Fine venue, good displays, great restroom quality, shop good selection, pretty shady courtyard for a little rest.

Oh boy!

By Rebecca O |

Must see when visiting Lubbock. As a native from Lubbock I love Buddy. I went crazy in the gift shop! Best place to pick up souvenirs for others…well I’m keeping them all for myself.

Nice musical history lesson

By monkandthelaw |

Worth a visit, the museum is cool, the history better. I learned several things about Lubbock and it's music scene in the 50's and 60's. I enjoyed my visit.

Small but full of good informstion

By BigMerk |

We visited here -I believe it's a must-do for visitors to Lubbock. It's quite easy to find and there is plentiful parking. There is a great photo op in the car park next to the oversized traditional Buddy Holly spectacles. You had better take that photo op as there is no photography allowed inside the museum.

Entry is $8 each and the museum itself comprises about 20 glass cases containing the history of Buddy Holly along with some cool memorabilia. Some of the exhibits are difficult to read and I would recommend they look at the lighting which could improve this.

In addition there is a small theatre showing a picture reel of Buddy history -although a lot of it repeats what in the museum.

Overall it takes between one and two hours but it's time well-spent. I noticed they are closing next week (13th Sep) for a few weeks refurb.

Great time learning about a legend

By ferrelljennifer |

I learned a lot about Buddy Holly and also other singers and songwriters from Lubbock and the surrounding area I did not know. Very well kept facility definitely worth a trip.

Friends from out of town visit

By Nitza Melgar |

A bit expensive
Small exhibit and visit to the Buddy Holley house
Interesting but I would not do it again on my own.
It is a one time visit thing.

Almost Heaven for a Buddy Holly Fan

By Bill R |

My wife and I spent over an hour at the Buddy Holly Center. The center has an 18 minute video on the artist. The collection contains artifacts from Buddy's short but influential career. We also took a quick look at the drummer's house which is located next door.

A 60's music fan

By kwiezy |

Interesting displays of the Buddy Holly era. Particularly enjoyed the video that was presented. More meaningful because of my age group.

Entertaining

By LubbockFlatlander |

The Buddy Holly Center is a great museum with quite a bit of memorabilia promoting the legacy of Buddy Holly and the music of Lubbock and West Texas, as well as providing exhibits on Contemporary Visual Arts and Music. There is a park and Walk of Fame across the street with a statue of Buddy Holly.
The J.I. Allison House is on the grounds and is the home where J.I. Allison, drummer of the band "The Crickets," lived as a teenager and where he and Buddy Holly wrote many hits including, “That'll Be the Day.”

Wonderful.

By NYCPress |

I "discovered" Buddy 33 years after his death, so although I wasn't around during his career, his music was as much a part of my youth as anyone from the late '50s. Thus, it was certainly a meaningful experience to see the big things in this small collection. The Allison house was also a real treat, to stand in the very room where Buddy and J.I. wrote the songs—as well as the enlargements of candid snapshots that show everyone in the house. There's a buy one/get one half-off deal with the Buddy Holly Center and the Silent Wings Museum, so do both if you can!

If you want to tour the house, however, try to time your visit accordingly as one can go through the main museum rather quickly and then end up waiting for a house tour to start.

Got to see this.

By Ron M |

I've been wanting to see this museum for many years. Very well done. You can get through it easily in about an hour or less but it's got great artifacts history and articles. The movie is also pretty good so give it a try.

A Must for Buddy Holly fans

By TucsonPhil |

A great complement to the rock and roll museum and Norman Petty Studios in Clovis New Mexico. One hour needed.

Neat to see

By Marie P |

8 dollars each person is kind of expensive for very small museum of Buddy Holly, at least we re here to check it out.

WOW - a must-see for any musician, or fan of music

By Chris B |

I was in Lubbock for the first time, on a business trip. I had some free time and made sure to visit the Buddy Holly statue, and was pleased to see the Buddy Holly Center right next door. So glad I did! This is a must see for any musicians or fans of music, especially the early days of rock & roll. To see his personal belongings, including THE STRATOCASTER and even a gold-top Les Paul he owned before moving to Fender. Lots of photos, some tour itineraries, a motorcycle (later owned by Waylon), etc. Also, an 18-minute documentary film showing on constant loop. I could see visiting this museum again, even though they don't allow photos.

Not much to see!

By Todd T |

Small museum with some memorabilia. I would love to give this place a better review but there is just not much to see. You will be done in 15 minutes.

See the guy who many famous artists claimed was their rock n roll mentor!

By Diner E |

I was tossed between a 4 and a 5, since you couldn't take pictures in the museum. However, there was enough in the museum to see for the $10 entrance fee, lower for seniors. For his short life span, he did a lot to start the white version of rock n roll. Many big-time artists claim he was their rock n roll mentor.
Across the street is the park where his statue stands, along with plaques of many famous artists who called Lubbock home. Well worth the stop!
BTW, if you plan on taking pics of the statue, do so in the morning as the sun sets behind the statue and makes features dark.

A must if in Lubbock

By dmhintze |

This is our era so this is a must see. Nice video to watch, and then walk around and see pictures and stuff. Nicely done. Too bad his life was cut short.

Nice tribute

By Lynn S |

This is a nice tribute to Buddy Holley with lots of information and items. The only downer is the items are part of a private collection and no photography is allowed. I learned his Last name is spelled Holley but was misspelled Holly on his original recording contract and the spelling stuck. It isn’t a huge collection but his life and career were short but iconic. It is definitely worth a visit but probably only an hour or so visit.

Fun, Short Visit

By sascanlan |

We enjoyed our visit, though part of the gallery was closed for set-up and we would have liked to see it. You only need 30 - 45 minutes here. The displays are well done and there is a great history of early rock 'n roll. The gift shop is very nice. Senior rate was $6, which was reasonable.

Was good to see

By Kevin T |

Interesting located in a nice park which had yoga classes going on. Took some pics and read the info

Worth the visit when in Lubbock

By skuke888 |

Worth the visit when in Lubbock if you're a Buddy Holly fan. It's not the biggest museum, but I enjoyed it.

There was also a temp exhibit of Barbie Dolls next door that was included with the Buddy Holly museum admission. ...a little weird (some of the dolls) and weirder that it was paired with Mr. Holly's stuff.

Wow Seeing a musical genus’ worked and played

By ddmscool |

Great museum if you are into music. I am and really loved learning about his life and music and how his muon influenced so many other musicians .

Great History

By LannyH |

I have wanted to visit ever since it opened and was not disappointed. If you are expecting a place where you can spend the day-this is not it. But for the price and a little bit more time than a standard Movie, it is a very interesting history not only of Buddy, but of the birth of rock n roll and musicians of the South Plains of Texas. Holly was only 22 when he died. His was not a long, but it was a storied career. There is one main display hall with timelines & interesting artifacts of Buddy's and other artists. There are a couple of items such as Buddy's glasses recovered from the crash site & typed Winter Dance Party schedule with Clear Lake Iowa handwritten in that gave me chills. It was also fun to see a pair of glasses donated by Elton John with other celebrity mementos. There is a small theatre with continuously running 20 minute video interviewing everyone from Buddy's family to Paul McCartney & Keith Richards. A few years ago, Crickets drummer Jerry Allison's childhood home was moved on site and furnished with time appropriate pieces. It is a small house & the tour is short, but interesting. Nice to see where Crickets rehearsed & "That'll Be the Day" was written. To me the highlight is a wing for the Buddy Holly education Foundation where artists ranging from the Crickets to Brian May, Dolly Parton, Roger Daltry & Pete Townsend are pictured with their personalized Buddy Holly guitars & personal letters from Holly's widow. Paul McCartney, an avid Holly fan and supporter, is pictured and has donated a signed guitar. Museum really makes you wonder how music might have changed had Holly lived. Great way to spend a couple or three hours.

Nice for adult visits

By Riverbabe60 |

nice lil place to visit but my grand children were bored not knowing who Buddy Holly was or having interest in him.

Very Nice Museum

By susieQ304 |

This isn't a large museum but it has lots of information and lots of Buddy Holly memorabilia, especially considering what a short career he had. While not a major Buddy Holly fan, I found the museum fascinating and wish I had had more time to read everything. We spent about 1 1/2 hours but could have spent another hour. We were also able to tour the J. I. Allison house next door where Buddy Holly spent a lot of time with his friend who lived there. There is plenty of free parking in front of the museum.

Buddy Holley is a legend and this museum proves it. Great stop

By Dianne W |

We detoured to Lubbock to visit the Buddy Holley museum and was not disappointed. It is an amazing and informative gallery of Buddy's contribution to Rock & Roll. His life was cut short in a tragic plane crash but his music and legend lives on in Lubbock. Buddy accomplished more in 18 months than many could hope to achieve in a lifetime. Be sure to watch the short film before entering the museum.

Surprise quality and interest by famous Lubbock star

By Mark |

Here you learn how cutting edge Buddy was in his very short career. Although fairly small this is a well done museum staffed by very knowledgeable people. Gift shop is interesting too. Everyone from Lubbock should visit and visitors should go to Easy to get to. Good parking.

Impressive!

By ZinaMarie |

Went with a friend to visit family. Had read up on museum Trip advisor. It was very thorough a lot of personal items! Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Nicely stocked gift store with cool items for Holly and guitar t-shirts. Loved the giant glasses out front great prop for pics! Got to tour the house they wrote a lot of songs in. Very authentic to period. Loved that part of the tour. You could take pics and walk around as long as you liked. Tour Guide answered any question she could and never seemed eager to leave. I'd go back again!

Rock N Roll Baby!

By GotItDownPat |

Interesting for those who remember and enjoyed his music. Loved the story of his beginnings. Memorabilia kept you interested. It is a small museum but fun for us baby boomers.

good for Buddy Holly fans

By veritykalabash |

It's small, but has some interesting displays. Don't miss Elton John's glasses on show there! Also a nice little gift shop. In the summer, they have events and music shows in the courtyard. Much more worth it to find out when those are held to visit then.

Cute little museum

By MammaTate |

Cute place to learn all about Buddy Holiday and his impact on the music scene. Definitely learned a few things and enjoyed the super friendly staff!

Lots of music history!

By Ed S |

Great place to visiting and get more details about Buddy Holly life and carrier. I truly recommend coming to Lubbock go visit the Buddy Holly Center.

Worth the stop

By Bonnie J |

We enjoyed the center. It was very well done considering his short life 😢 worth the time and money. It was interesting learning his influence on music.

If I'd flown all the way to America JUST to visit here it would have been worth it

By Angie Mc |

I have been a BH fan my whole life and this was a dream come true. We visited on Sunday (check the opening hours as its 1-5 on a Sunday and closed Mondays) but we still had plenty of time to see everything. We got there 30 mins before opening so we had time to visit the walk of fame, statue, take photos with the famous glasses sculpture etc (I recommend doing this as it really helped build the excitement for when the museum doors opened!). I read EVERYTHING in the museum and it took me an hour. In fact we had time to do that, leave and go up the street for a sandwich, and be back in time for the Allisonn house tour at 3pm. The staff are super friendly and the gift shop has some nice items.

Note: no photography is allowed in the museum in most areas which is a shame (you can't photograph his guitars, clothes or his glasses....although people were. But there is CCTV so its at your own risk if you do). The gift shop staff have a photocopied list of the the places BH lived which they will give you a copy of for free if you ask them.

Poignant memorial to Buddy Holly

By wannabefoodcritic |

Maria Holly truly did a fabulous job in creating this small but poignantly sad remembrance of a young talent lost too soon. 21 yrs old is too young but his musical legacy lives on forever. I recommend allowing at least a hour to read the timeline and not miss anything.

Good place overall

By engr1981 |

They have great food and salads. Good environment and staff. Nice music in the background and interesting decoration inside and outside of the restaurant.

Don’t waste your money.

By Zespy |

Big let down!! Small museum with a few memorabilia of Buddy Holly. $10 per adult expensive for the little bit that was there. Do not waste your money.

My husband and I attended a Starwars concert a few months ago which was awesome.

By Departure783537 |

This Center is a gem in Lubbock. Top notch shows in a wonderful atmosphere. Plenty of restrooms, elevators available, and the smaller Cricket theater.

Worth the 45 minute walk to/from!

By CPFerret |

Buddy Holly had much more impact on music in his short career than I ever knew. All the way to the UK and back! His crash, I hear, started the FAA's Part 135 rules. They have so much wonderful information on his life, and it was a treat to walk past his high school on the way to the Center. Go if at all possible. The famous statue is next door, and again next door to the Center is the house his drummer grew up in, moved to that location, which you can tour as well.

Oh Boy ! well worth a visit

By lightfader |

Well worth your time to visit. Lots of memorabilia and stories about the short but brilliant career of Buddy Holly. Good video as well to set the scene with appearances by artists who were influenced by his music (e.g: McCartney). Its not a very big museum but the items they have on display are well laid out. Takes less than an hour . Good deal: If you buy an admission to this museum you get a discount at the Silent Wings museum near the Airport.

Lots of Reading

By susaninstlouis2014 |

We are huge fans of Buddy Holly but we're a tad disappointed with this exhibit. Lots of reading not enough music.
Good movie. Terrible gift shop. Very expensive CD's $40.!!!
At least sell a variety of post cards and turn up the music.

A fitting tribute to a music genius

By Texas Traveler 59 |

Just happened to visit on his birthday, 9/7. Very well done and organized museum. Only wish you could take pictures of his gutters, etc. Statue and Hall of Fame across the street. Street named Cricket.

Nice Way To Spend an Hour

By William V |

Sweetie and I are in Lubbock for a getaway weekend. Today we headed over to the Buddy Holly museum. I'm old enough to remember him from when I was a young lad.

The museum is in a nice building with plenty of parking. Admission is reasonable. It took us about an hour to go through it. It is kind of creepy.....it's a shrine to Buddy Holly, complete with his bedroom set (??), report card, letters to him, school stuff and quite a few of his guitars, testimonies from lots of his contemporaries, and displays of his records. There's a 18 minute movie that covers his life and 18 month rock n roll career.

All in all, a nice visit.

Nice Place for a Family.

By brunoj1988 |

Took my family out and we loved it. It has a nice family setting and some cool things too look at. Its a lot of walking but worth it.

Nice Centre for Fans

By EdithWales |

Small but good and interesting. The film is well worth seeing. If you do the Slient Wings Museum it's half price so well worth it.

Could be more

By Cynthia P |

Disappointing tributes to Buddy Holly. The house on site is from one of the band members. A nice story line in the center however it is all private collections and no photos allowed. Expensive for what you get.

Tribute to and memorabilia from Buddy Holly

By Dr Stephen |

$8 entry lets you access an 18-minute 1999 biography film, a hall filled with the Buddy Holly story - including letters, guitars, clothing, etc. and a room with his New York furniture.

There is a home next door where Buddy used to practice with him buddies (the drummer’s home). A guided tour is included.

There are big glasses outside, and there is also a bronze statue across the street (both free to visit).

Perhaps we should have known already, but Buddy died age 22.

You know the songs - a very nostalgic visit.

School Trip

By Terri M |

A great little museum about Buddy Holly. They provide a guided tour if you would like one. The tour guides add the "little" details about the life of Buddy Holly that you would not see/read on the exhibits. It also has a nice garden/picnic area. It also has a 1940-50 era home on display next to the museum. Recommend this to all who visit Lubbock.

Good musicians are always a product of good community

By Bishop Dunne Ca... S |

The Buddy Holly Center is a great stopping off point when visiting Lubbock. I enjoyed getting to know a "hometown hero" of the Lubbock area from the first half of the 1900s. We took the Bishop Dunne orchestras to the Buddy Holly Center to kick off our West Texas Performance Tour. As our first stop in Lubbock, we needed a place to stretch our legs and get perspective on the music of this area throughout the 20th century.
Sebastian, the education coordinator at The Buddy Holly Center, was fantastic with our kids who had lots of questions. I would expect someone in his position to be knowledgable about the professional accolades that Buddy Holly experienced, along with Buddy's colleagues such as JI, Waylon Jennings, Elvis, and other musical influences like Bessie Smith and Hank Williams, Sr. What impressed me was Sebastian's ability to answer questions about Buddy's extended family and the legacy Buddy has left for this area, and the music industry in general.
While we were in the area to visit the university, we acknowledge that there is a lot of music that happens independently of the formal education systems. It was a delight to hear about this "second chair choir member" who became so very famous!

Must see if in Lubbock !

By mptxmom |

Small but worth the visit!! Part of history you must see. Also swing by Buddy's final resting place at the city cemetery

"On worth seeing for free"

By Michelle P |

This place is "ok". Not exciting unless you truly love Buddy Holly. There's nothing really fun to look at. Just the same ol', same ol'. The only thing that changes is the art work opposite Buddy Holly museum. Save your money and go when it's free. Every 1st Friday of the month. They have snacks and appetitzers and OVER PRICED WINE AND BEER. If you di go to the art trail, start at the LUCHA. BETTER ART.

Great memorial to Buddy

By Trevi36 |

I was skeptical about seeing this as he was way before my time but I took my 88 year old Mom and she loved it. Turns out it’s way more than just a singer whose life was cut short. It’s educational.

Must see Attraction in Lubbock

By Monty R |

There is so much more to see at the Buddy Holly Center the I ever anticipated. I would set my schedule for between 1-2 hours to enjoy everything there is to see.

Interesting music stop

By gary19522017 |

If you are into musical history or a Buddy Holly fan you need to include this in a visit to Lubbock. Easy to find and nice photo op.

Finally made it in!

By Nick J |

After a few failed attempts on previous visits to Lubbock, I finally got in to see the museum. It's small, as mentioned, but moving. The art gallery attached was a neat surprise. The reason there aren't more photos on TripAdvisor is that they really police the "No photography in the gallery" rule. I was sorry to miss the tour of the attached Allison house.

Really cool place

By Joel M |

I had to go here. It was amazing. Everything about Buddy Holly and his life a career. I had driven by previously so this time I made it a point to stop and go in.

Buddy holly

A must see. I wish they blasted the music throughout the place. It was awesome.
The staff was helpful in other activities around. Thanks

Group tour

Enjoyed our stop at the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock. A very knowlegable tour guide made sure we enjoyed our visit. Spent an hour learning all about the legend that is Buddy Holly!

Don’t miss this!

By 404HappyTraveller |

Even if you aren’t a Buddy Holly fan, but who isn’t, this is a very worthwhile stop. A short film briefly outlines his short life, and all he accomplished in only a couple of years. The entire array of displays is extremely well done! Lots of memorabilia and personal items add to the overall insight into his life. The only shortcoming was they should turn the background music up much louder. 😀

Start with the film! Informative and enjoyable. An Australian couple engaged as we were stepping onto the curb were very enthusiastic! We were also upon experiencing the City provided museum.

Very interesting history on Buddy Holly.

By John B |

The exhibits were very interesting. I learned a lot about Buddy while visiting. Would highly recommend the Buddy Holly Center to everyone.

Neat little place

By Daniel S |

This is a neat little museum with everything Buddy Holly inside. It's smaller than I expected but they have a wing dedicated to rotating art installations. They have live music in the summer.

Quick and interesting.

By Paul S |

Unique experience in that there was only one Buddy Holly. I learned a few thing about this talented and influential musician who's songs are still familiar today. 18 minute movie sums up most of what you see in the display area. Displays have plenty of related things to read. The was also a contemporary art section. Spent just over an hour.

Amazing!

By Dave M |

The Buddy Holly Center was our main reason for spending the night in Lubbock. We are huge music fans and really looked forward to the Center. We were not disappointed.

While smaller than many museums, the quality was first class. They have his ‘54 Gold Top Les Paul — a surprise since you only ever see pictures of him playing a Stratocaster. But don’t worry, they have his Strat, too! Hey also have some of his acoustic guitars and even a special acoustic guitar the center commissioned for Sir Paul McCartney and signed by Paul.

The most amazing item was the exhibit case with Buddy’s iconic glasses. They were found in the field where the plane went down. Looking at something so personal was incredibly moving.

I highly recommend visiting the Center.

Loved it!

By Lynn M |

This small museum is very well maintained. Although we know many of the Buddy Holly classic songs, we really did not know much about him other than the tragic way he and the others with him died in the plane crash.

We enjoyed the documentary film on his life and hearing and reading about the many musicians he influenced, including Paul McCartney and Keith Richards.

The gift shop is really nice and I bought the iconic Buddy Holly sunglasses, the 3-CD set of his music and a lapel pin. The gift shop is almost like an exhibit in itself.

The letters written by Mrs. Holly to those who have supported the museum (the likes of Paul McCartney, Dolly Parton, etc.) were each beautifully crafted and individualized. I wish I could have stood long enough to read them all.

I also loved the letter written by Buddy Holly’s father. Beautifully written to give everyone a sense of who Buddy was. It was hard to believe Buddy accomplished so much in his short life. (He died at the age of 22 or 23.)

The room with the art (photography) was also exceptional. According to a staff member, they change this room out about every three months.

If we lived here, we would definitely get an annual membership, but will consider making a donation anyway.

Thank you, and we hope to come back.

Worth a visit!

By CathyDArizona |

Lots of music history here. Quite a bit of memorabilia too. No photographing is allowed. The 15 minute movie is worth seeing as well.

You also have access to the fine arts studio. In addition there is a nice shaded courtyard if you want to bring your picnic lunch.

Be sure to walk across to the park to see the Buddy Holly sculpture and the wall of fame plaques.

If You Love Rock & Roll, You Must Go

By Bob K |

Buddy Holly's short career (18 months) continues to influence the music he loved. The Center includes a Museum, gift shop, performance space, restaurant and the Home of J.J, Allison: Buddy's best friend and band mate. In this house they co-wrote "That'll Be The Day" and other hits. Holly was the first major Rock Musician to insist on and get complete Artistic Freedom - he wrote, produced and recorded all his music without record company control opening the way for Bob Dylan, The Beatles and Rolling Stones to name a few beneficiaries. His guitars, iconic eye glasses early kinescopes and photos tell a powerful story about this determined young man. The 20 minute video at the museum entrance is a perfect way to prep for the museum exhibits. The JJ Allison House has tours scheduled during the day but call ahead for times.

Fun stop! great museum

Took our teenagers 18, & 14, and they enjoyed learning about Buddy Holly. Really Well done museum. Price is reasonable. Our kids loved taking pics with the big glasses in front. Walk across the street to the statue while your parked.

Buddy Holly Center

By Ed P |

Nice small museum with lots of information on Buddy Holly's short life. Very dissatisfied that pictures are not allowed in the museum. A great timeline of his life up to his tragic death. Next door we were treated to a tour of his drummers home tha was moved to this location. Across the street is a statue of Buddy Holly and tributes to other musicians on The Wall of Fame.

For Buddy and Music Fans

By Charles S |

The Center, a former railroad station depot, is located on ‘Crickets’ Avenue and houses memorabilia and artefacts all of historical interest from the life of from Buddy Holly. Pieces include the singer’s Fender Stratocaster guitar, his famous horn-rimmed glasses, Ariel Cyclone motorcycle, outfits, film clips, photographs and fan mail. The museum offers free admission. The Center is across the road from the West Texas Hall of Fame featuring the centre piece statue of the singer. Worth a visit for fans of Buddy Holly and music fans alike.

Love!

By TexasGal806 |

This center is so neat. It has a lot of artifacts of his childhood and a lot of special things. The set up is great.

Lubbock's Fav Son

By M.Mays |

While visiting Lubbock with a buddy, we made a trip to the Buddy Holly center! A smaller museum dedicated to the memory of Buddy Holly and the Crickets, but worth the time. For a man who's professional career lasted only 18 mos, his influence in was far & wide. The museum does a great job of presenting a timeline of Buddy & the Crickets, as well rock & roll! There is an 18 min movie on a loop that presents a glimpse into the life of Lubbock's Fav son. No pictures can be taken in the museum. Expect to spend 2+ hours to tour the museum. The cost was $8 per person, which I felt was reasonable. Across the street is the Lubbock Walk of Fame with a statue of Buddy as well as all honored Lubbock folks. If you have a few hours, recommend making a stop!

Pretty Neat to See

By Amy L |

I was in town for a job training and went to visit this place that was close by. I didnt have much time for a tour but looked aroung. It was a quiet and calm place. Sad to know that Buddy died at the age of 22. Hopefully if I have time, I would do the gallery tour. Lady in shop was nice.

If you like music this should be a place to see.

By Astros80 |

Was not a huge Buddy Holly fan growing up but I always like to see how the artists did their thing. Interesting place with a lot of the history of his life, fandom, and untimely death. worth the visit!

Highlight of my Trip!

By ATexasMcKee |

I loved this place! We came on the First Friday Art Trail event. The Buddy Holly exhibit was very informative and interesting.
There was also a Dia De Los Muertos exhibit. Everything was so beautiful in there.
I’m so glad we went !

Very good small museum

By Jim C |

This museum is very well set out. it is on the small side, but if you are a fan it's worth the visit. You are not allowed to take photo's inside. Disappointed there was no programme in the shop, I messaged the museum and apparently it is in progress. If you are a Buddy Holly fan I would recommend it. Also got to the cemetery to se his gravesite

Excellent

By John T |

Very good. It’s definitely worth the time. Very well done and the front desk was very helpful. Exhibit was definitely an A+ experience.

18 Months a Music Star....

By steve b |

Definitely a must stop if you enjoy the roots of Rock and Roll. Some good photo ops too outside the museum--no charge for those!

As small as Buddy's life-span

By Chuck N |

It will cost you $1 per minute to view this quaint little spot dedicated to some of the best music in the Western world. Since Holly died (spoiler alert) in an airplane crash just a few years after becoming famous, he did not own much "stuff." But you can view what little stuff he had, even his little kid bed which is a feature in one of the 3 rooms, for $8.

Fun day

By ssbetts |

This was a fun day. There was a lot of things to see and do. We learned lots of new things. They have lots to see

Nice small museum

By Debby A |

We enjoyed the visit. The film was the most interesting part of the museum. Some of the exhibits verged on voyeurism - do we really need to see his junior high report card and a plain white t-shirt that he wore in high school? Although I'm glad we went, the house tour was not very interesting or informative. I noticed that they have some guitar classes, and at times have musicians who provide a musical experience, which would be fun, but nothing like that was going on when we were there. We noticed that most of the kids were bored with the museum.

A true look into the life of Buddy Holly.

By MarkFinATX |

I was amazed by how many of Buddy's items were on display. Great storyboards/plaques. He's a true rock legend.

Full of information

By glopaul |

This is a must for Buddy Holly fans; so much information and things of Buddy Holly to see. Also a visit to the home of J Allison the drummer in the Crickets. Lady in the center is very helpful and informative.

Must see if BH fan

By noonday_son |

Otherwise, it still is pretty entertaining for any fan of early rock and roll. Took a bit more time to complete because of the amount of info and artifacts. An 18 minute film, gallery of rock and blues pics from the 70s, and stroll thru drummer's childhood home round out the visit.

Small but Interesting

By SoloMode |

This is a pretty small collection but worth a look. There is a very nicely done short documentary that is definitely worth watching. The timeline was also interesting and I learned a lot. I enjoyed the house tour but check the website for times, it’s part of the entry fee but you can only see it with a guide. I also really enjoyed the little art gallery that isn’t Buddy Holly related but had a music theme. I am not sure if the gallery changes or is a permanent collection. I am not sure why they don’t allow you to take photos of the collection, seemed odd for a tourist stop but you can take photos on the house tour and on the grounds.

Great place to visit in Lubbock

By rubenaguilarr |

Lubbock is not very big and this is definitely a place to visit while there. Great spot for pictures outside and across the street

Vacation

By cindy c |

Interesting. Not very big. $21.00 for 2 adults and 1 teenager. I thought it was a little overpriced, but enjoyable.

Learn about Buddy and rock and roll history

By Eddie S |

Enjoyed it was not expensive, and has some great historical learning opportiinutites. They also have his child home home on the grounds for you to see. Buddy was making some really new roads on rock and roll music. I suggest you go does not take long. They have a 16 minute theater on his life. Tragic he died at 22. Glad I went

An emotional visit

By jetsetletsgo |

This was a 2day Buddy-fest - the first day at the museum and the second at Norman Petty Studios in Clovis. Both were exceptional.

I was a little wary as some reviews indicate there is not much to see at the museum. Let me put the record straight. Its no Country Music Hall of Fame in terms of volume but if you are a fan of Buddy and of music history then there is loads there to keep you busy for a couple of hours.

As such its a museum where you take time to study the artefacts, read their history, read the letters and get in to the whole intimate vibe of the place. Its very moving - no less so than the letter from Buddy's mother to the Editor of NME (British Music Mag) where a clearly still distraught mother wants to put the record straight and keep his memory alive. It worked !

Buddy's glasses are there, retrieved from the wreckage only relatively recently. Something so personal and yet his trademark which provided an insult to every glasses wearing kid (like me).

To finish off there is the motorbike that Buddy bought - an amusing and succinct little story so i wont give the spoiler of if you dont already know it.

No photos are allowed and i think overall this is a good thing - you have to go to see the stuff - not online.

The Center helpfully has info and addresses for other Buddy sites to visit - school, radio station etc.

Jerry Allison's house is a nice extra touch where you can feel the 50s atmosphere still - it looks like a great bedroom to rehearse in. I felt this bit could have been better though with the guide actually leading you through and pointing out interesting stuff. She did know it, but you had to ask. As a result i think a lot of people flew though this bit without really appreciating it.

Some of the exhibition spaces are actually a little overcrowded so you cant see the letters clearly and they are often at the back. It would help if there was a typewritten version of the letters so you dont spend so much time trying to unscramble the handwriting.

Just some well intended criticism of a great homage to one of popular music's legends.

Buddy Holly Center is Great!!

By Ovejeff |

Very well done museum that shows the big impact Buddy and the Crickets had on Rock and Roll Music!!
Paul Mc Cartney said: No Crickets, No Beatles!!
Also, you must visit The Silent Wings Museum!! We learned so much about our USA Glider Infantry Men in WW2!!

Must see if your in Lubbock

By KURT B |

Really nice museum and even nicer if you like the history of rock and roll. bussy Holly eas amazing and I learned a lot.

A must see in Lubbock!

By Karen |

This museum is well worth the time! We learned so much about Buddy Holly and his story! Alot of information if you have time though even hitting the highlights you get such an appreciation of his short but amazing career.
They offer half off the Silent Wings museum which we also did and recommend!

Limited exhibition but enjoyable for music fans

By Alan G |

Buddy Holly's influence on modern music was huge. Sadly, his life ended tragically at a young age and that's reflected in the content of the museum. When all is said and done, there's not a lot of things connected to Buddy that can be exhibited. The museum has done a great job in stretching out the material they have and it sends an ache through the heart to think what might have been had Buddy lived longer. It's definitely worth dropping by to take a look if you're a fan of Buddy or the music of that era. Guitar aficionados will enjoy seeing Buddy's first guitar and there's an interesting timeline of American music starting from Jimmy Rodgers, Leadbelly and Blind Lemon Jefferson through to the music of the 50's.

The gift shop is way overpriced. Don't bother with buying any of the music CD's as you can get the same albums online for much cheaper. The fine arts gallery attached to the museum is, well... meh. It didn't float my boat but is an extra thing to see. The Allison House (where Buddy and the Crickets used to practice) is only open (as far as I could see) three times a day with the first "tour" at 11:00 a.m.

Very interesting timeline of Buddy Holly's life.

By V G |

We enjoyed reading all of the events that happened in the life of Buddy Holly. Many things I did not know. If you are a fan of Buddy's you will enjoy.

Fun times

By Albert G |

We all enjoyed the museum.
Kids ages 5, 8, 9, 11. It was a really nice family day.
The kids favorite was listening to an actual phone call Buddy Holly made.

A surprise

By Duane W |

I was pleasantly surprised, not by the Center but by the fact that it used to be a great place to eat, drink and listen to music. Had been a while since i visited Lubbock. Wanted to find The Depot, place I referred to previously. Went to the area where I thought it was, after all this was a 35 year gap and no one knew about it. Even in the bars and restaurants nearby. We decided to go into the BH Center and low and behold, there is an area where they have the old Depot menu on display. Amazing collection for the hometown boy who would go on to leave numerous impressions on the musical world that are foundations of a change in so many ways. When in Lubbock, visit the Buddy Holly Center.

Short life big impact.

By Sandy M |

Great place and nice video of a bit of his history. Amazing what a 22 year old can do. Nice small displays

Happy it was here, a bit pricey

By Jeff K |

Was so looking forward to seeing the museum. A bit small, but they had some cool family and Holly memorabilia. The film was good and enjoyable. Seeing artifacts from his childhood through life was cool. The original house where some of the song were crafted was closed unfortunately. They also have a local artist gallery attached to look through. A bit pricey at $10 an adult, it’s a rock n roll legend but all good. Left feeling the vibe.

No pictures alowed

By JeMaSan |

A small center, but if you want to visit the museum, you have to know it is prohibited to take pictures in the museum. The cashier in the shop was not friendly at all and didn't seem to care. We left the place without visiting the inside of the museum.

Buddy is Lubbock, Lubbock is Buddy!

By Tracy M |

This is what brought us to Lubbock, TX. A few months ago, my 16 year old son asked, "can we go to Lubbock, TX?" My response was "what the heck is in Lubbock, TX??!" The answer of course is Buddy Holly! I am so glad he brought me here!!

The museum staff were wonderful. The museum itself was small, but filled with some really interesting items, detailed history of Buddy Holly and the musicians of that time period (and before!). I got chills seeing some of the items in the museum- won't give anything away.

My son bought a guitar and we were concerned about getting it back home to PA. The manger packed it so great and was so attentive to us- we appreciated it so much! The guitar made it home safe and so did my Buddy Holly glasses!!

This museum and adjacent house is a must see and I suggest all Buddy Holly era fans visit this museum!

Great Museum, Gallery & Center

By derrickwg36 |

The Buddy Holly Center is a must see if you visit Lubbock. I was visiting Lubbock for the weekend and decided to visit the center, it was amazing. The center provides a lot of history of Rock n Roll and Buddy Holly. The center has numerous artifacts of Buddy Holly and interesting parallels he had with great artist like Elvis Presley and the Beatles. I highly recommend visiting the Buddy Holly Center.

Must see for all who love music.

By TravelAmericaNow |

The Buddy Holly Center is excellent. It is a classy museum, spotlighting not only Buddy Holly but the great music talents of his time, and those influenced by him, such as the Beatles. Buddy Holly - a tremendous talent who made such a hugely significant contribution to music in his very short career.

Good museum

By Wendy V |

It is a small museum about the life of Buddy Holly. Lots of personal items, even the glasses he wore the night he died.

Great Tribute

By WallandTNgal |

Very interesting museum, loaded with memorabilia. Very fitting tribute to Buddy Holly. We toured JJs house and enjoyed it also. Don't forget to visit the Hall of Fame across the street

Hello music lovers

By Teresa F |

Located in the depot district of Lubbock, the Buddy Holly center has so much to offer a music lover. Thursday evenings in the summer features live music in the courtyard. This is a great place for the history buff too.

Renaissance man

By PookieandMoe |

This great little museum has so many interesting artifacts from Buddy Holly’s life. Don’t miss the movie. Paul McCarthy and Bob Dylan talk about what an influence he was on them(!) His famous eye glasses recovered from the tragic plane crash(!) What are the odds that he would have found a world-class record producer down the road in Clovis, NM?? It’s so interesting to see his schoolwork displayed. He was a talented artist-he was talented at everything!!

Great place for Buddy Holly memorabilia.

By Mrs_LPeckles |

The Buddy Holly Center was a pretty cool stop we made in Lubbock. It's a small place but full of info on Buddy Holly. We timed it perfectly and we were able to tour the home next door, where the Dummer lived.

Nice rock and roll history stop.

By Roxanne M B |

Nice piece of American Rock and Roll history. Spend some time reading the timeline of the Crickets and checking out the displays relating to the life and early death of Buddy Holly. Grab a brochure on the way into the exhibit for explanations of each window. Take a tour of J. I. Allison's home and visit the Buddy Holly statue at the walk of fame. Had a very nice visit, and had lunch across the street at the Cast Iron Grill.

Buddy Holly Centre

By Neville P |

Have wanted to visit Lubbock in Texas for over 40 years to pay my respects to Buddy Holly. I was delighted to find the centre dedicated to Buddy. There are wonderful items from his very early life and his all to short career.
The staff were knowledgeable and very friendly. We even visited the little house next door were That'll be the day was written. If you are a Buddy fan or just a music fan it's well worth a visit. Also visited Buddy's resting place.
For me coming all the way from England it was well worth the trip.
Thanks to all for keeping the music and memory alive.

Great appreciation for an american music icon

By GARY G |

Toured the Buddy Holley Center while traveling through Lubbock. A lot of personal Buddy items on display from his childhood through his death, including his black glasses that were found at the scene of the plane crash that killed him. All this along with an 18 minute video really gives you a good perspective of his influence on many musicians. This includes the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and others. The Allison house where many of the Buddy Holley and the Crickets songs were written is also on the grounds. Be sure to check out the large iconic black glasses out front and across the street is a statute of Buddy. An inexpensive self guided tour is well worth the money if you appreciate his music. Also check out the Lubbock City Cemetery where Buddy is buried.

Great way to spend an afternoon

By Patti B |

The museum had many interesting mementos and the printed information was thorough. We enjoyed the gift shop and want to come back when they have live music outside in the courtyard setting.

Quick visit

By Joe S |

Got into Lubbock at a time the Centet was closed. But the statue was open, great area for the kids to listen to Holly's music and swing to some Rock n' Roll.

Lindsey Stirling Concert!

By Janice B |

We attended a concert to see Lindsey Stirling play her violin while performing at the same time with her dancing and trapeze performance. It was amazing to listen and watch her and her crew perform together. Excellent show for the entire family. This was my first time to go to the Buddy Holly Hall. It was very beautiful building. Very impressed!

GREAT VISIT!

By Bob B |

Buddy Holly is a particular hero of mine, and I enjoyed seeing the Center. It is well organized and satisfied the fan in me.

Interesting but short

By Mary T |

Interesting and well laid out.. with such a short career and life there wasn’t a extensive display.. there were a few guitars he owned, a few letters and notes …. The bedroom set that was a high school graduation gift and dining room set that was a wedding gift.. much of it was signage/timelines…. No photos allowed … at $10/person a little pricey in my opinion

Ok, but it could be so much more

By Olathe1 |

It's nice. People running it are very friendly and it has a lot of Buddy Holly information. But it could be so much more. Nothing interactive, not even hardly anything with Holly performing live or being interviewed. Easy to get to and the price is right so it is fine to spend an hour or so off the road on a trip, but don't expect a place that takes full advantage of the amazing Buddy Holly story.

A Lubbock must-see

By Lucky_Eddie |

A must see for Holly fans and people who are fans but don’t know it, by virtue of his songs covered by others and the tremendous influence he had on major bands like the Beatles and Stones. They should play his music more prominently and the film really needs to be updated - it looks like something done 25 years ago or more.

Point of Interest

By lawbit |

Loving making pit stops to see interesting sites within towns/cities that I visit. This is certainly a must see if you are in the area.

Cute and interesting

By LAstuckinKS |

Great museum for an amazing artist. the gift shop is full of some wonderful items. So glad we stopped in and learned new things.

Best 20 minutes you can spend learning about Buddy Holly

By Martha J |

It's small, but well put together. There's a timeline, memorabilia, artifacts, lots of stuff to look at. We all know how young Buddy died, but it's really interesting to dive deeper into his contributions to the Rock n Roll world, and how tragically short his professional career actually was. It won't take you long, but well worth the 20 minutes!

Friendly City, Friendly Center

By damianbray |

An absolute must for anyone interested in 1950's rock n roll and the influences West Texas music played in modern rock as we know it. It's a very touching and poignant place to come and see. The staff I spoke to most - David, Jacqui and Geneva - were all very knowledgeable and couldn't be more helpful in terms of trivia. A printed sheet gives detail on all the exhibits in the Buddy Holly permanent museum and my wife would've loved the current temporary exhibition into the history of the Barbie Doll. Except she was at home, in Scotland :-). The home of drummer Jerry Allison was flatbedded and planted next door, lovingly restored and an added gem.

The West Texas Walk of Fame is right across the road and a great steak house and live music club next door to that. Buddy's grave is only up the road too. Lovely.

One reflection, I'm not sure the rest of Lubbock fully gets what they've got in terms of the influence Buddy Holly commands in the evolution of pop music - but then it was and always will be a great hub of C&W, Texas Swing etc.

Got to say I read a lot of negative stuff before I went there - but Lubbock is, coincidentally and by a distance, the friendliest place I ever set tourist foot in. Not Fade Away.

More than expected!

By TopazMonkey |

On a quiet Sunday afternoon during a visit to Lubbock, we popped into this museum and weren't really expecting much. We were happily proven wrong. This is a very well organized collection that walks you through Buddy Holly's life and key events (up to his death) in chronological order. Even if you are not a fan of Buddy Holly, you should take a stroll through this thoughtfully designed museum and learn about, or be reminded, of the impact he has had in the decades following his death. Definitely a must-see.

Offers great insight to Buddy Holly's life and career! A must see in Lubbock!

By Hilde B |

Easy to find and lots of parking. Small but packed with information end exhibits about Buddy Holly. Take a picuture at the oversized Buddy Holly glasses on the outside as cameras are not allowed inside. You can tour the hose where some of the music was written, as it has been rebuilt beside the centre. You can also hear an actual phone call between Buddy Holly and his record company. The staff was very helpful and informative so this is a great opportunity to learn how much Buddy Holly influenced bands decades after his death. Make sure you see the West Texas wall of fame just across the road which also has a huge statue of Buddy Holly. A must see in Lubbock.

Excellent Display

By Patty |

If you are a Buddy Holly can don't miss this! Excellent displays and wonderful staff to assist you! Gives a wonderful perspective on his life and music.

Seeing the local sites

By smlkennedy |

This was such a fun activity. We’re in town for a college visit and wanted to see some of the local venues. The museum has so much of the history of music with the contributions made by Buddy Holly.

Nice memorabilia if you are a Holley fan....

By audthad |

Be sure to tour the house that Buddy and Crickets practiced in....located just next store...takes about 15 minutes to tour...memorabilia in the center is priceless...

Had a terrific time and will return!

By Robert L |

We drove down from Spokane arriving on Saturday, September 7th, having no idea we’d participate in Buddy Holly’s 88th Birthday. What a great time and learning experience. We highly recommend the facilities and staff, as all were well worth the time and money!

Lacks enthusiasm.

By mtang072017 |

This is a small exhibit. I didn't think it was worth $8.00 for entry; for the size and information you get $5.00 would be a fair price.
It would have been better if they had his music playing softly in the background.
My personal opinion is that the entry fee and gift shop are both overpriced.

Friendly, welcoming and not overdone

By MNice |

Buddy Holly only lived to be 22 years old, but you will find out he accomplished more than most people have in a lifetime. A few months before we visited this attraction we drove from Minnesota to Clear Lake, Iowa and visited the Surf Ballroom (never seems to be open when we are there) and the airplane crash site which took the young singers life. The video (16 minutes) is totally worth doing at the beginning of your adventure here. Regular admission is $10 each with discounts for seniors, students and military. Consider it a donation and an honor to keep history alive and support the arts. We loved our time here looking at his glasses, guitars and clothing. His records are displayed along with pictures and a chronology of his life including his motorcycle. There is a gift shop with some fun stuff. We made a side trip from Amarillo to Dallas and it was totally worth it as we saw the cotton fields and changing landscape of West Texas from prairie to hills (near Dallas). We loved this place and the women who was working the desk at the time we arrived was fantastic!

Definitely go

By trn81 |

I think this museum is a must-see. It's not expensive to go there. They have a movie about his very short life. The displays are done very Tastefully and are very interesting. One quick note if you go to the air gliders Museum and buy tickets you get a half off coupon for the Buddy Holly Museum.

Enjoyed our visit.

By pasherry |

Traveling through Lubbock, we wanted to stop here. Cost is $8pp with discount for kids, students, military and seniors. The museum is small but does a good job of telling the story of Buddy Holly's early life, influences and career that only spanned 18mos. There is a film, music timeline, memorabilia and nice gift shop. You can take a tour of J.I Allison's house next door (drummer) and there were other art exhibits in the center. We spent 1.5 hrs here.

Buddy Holly remembered

By Symiman |

Dedicated to Buddy Holly this museum describes his short life and rise to fame very well, with lots of tributes and background stories relating to him. If you’re not a fan then probably not for you.

Lots of Historical Items

By Larry B |

Easy access from Interstate 27.

Charles Hardin Holley was tragically killed after chartering a plane. The pilot, Roger Peterson, took off in inclement weather, although he was not certified to fly by instruments only. The plane crashed Northwest of Mason City Iowa.

Closed on Monday!!!

By CathyP1953 |

Despite the museum being closed, we were able to take ample photographs. The glasses out front were absolutely "Buddy Holly"!!! Be sure and look across the street at the stage setup with his statue!!! What a great tribute to a music legend!!! Lubbock, be proud!!!

A great visit

By Hunda |

We have wanted to come here for years and were not disappointed, the entry price of $6 for us seniors was well appreciated and the museum is very well laid out and the video very interesting. The shop and staff also very good, it was a very worthwhile visit en route to Amarillo, but very sad to learn more of his life, Buddy Holly was so very talented and such a waste of that talent to lose his life so tragically at 22.

Must-Do!

By MiMi J |

This is a must-do for Buddy Holly fans. They have a house tour and a very cool room with many Buddy Holly original items. There is also a very interesting time line that gives a lot of info on Buddy's life! Nice gift shop on site too!

Good video, not too much to literally see

By PuzzleSolver855 |

Being too young to know about him, this was a good introduction before walking across the parking lot for lunch at the Cast Iron Grill. I'm glad I went but it doesn't take much time to see.

Very nice Operation.

By Bud B |

Very nice Operation, i did not pay to take the tour, just bought a T-shirt, but it looks great, although the T-shirt selection was small.

Showcase of Lubbock!

By _mevans1398 |

Anyone coming from England wants this to be the first place to visit. Visitors from other areas also it enjoy it. Always take my company here as it is a memory in time.
Great exhibits both of Buddy Holly and also the art displays. Summer music time in the courtyard is great also. Great gift shop. Place not to miss in Lubbock

Interesting

By msmith79413 |

I have lived in Lubbock almost my whole life, but have never visited the Buddy Holly Center, so a friend of mine and I went on a Sunday after church and I must say I have no idea why I waited so long to visit. It was very imformative about all kinds of music and the set up of the house and Holly's bedroom and all the musical information was eye opening and a great experience for me and my friend. Thank You for having a place with so much history.

Nice but small

By desifoto |

It’s nice to see a little about Buddy Holley. It’s a small museum, but you can tour the house where he and a friend in the band wrote songs in. The museum is nice. There’s a small gift shop.

Buddy Holly gone too soon! Great tribute museum!

By Lonna T |

The museum is very well done! Great exhibits and videos. Amazing singer/performer. You may wonder how anyone at only 22 when he died tragically could he have so much influence and success. Video includes Paul McCartney crediting Buddy with being a major influence on the Beatles! Great gift shop if you're a real fan!

Very Fun

By diananvrr |

Lots of interesting details in this exhibit
Don’t miss it when you come to Lubbock
You see other musicians besides Holly and it’s shows mid century modern decor from Hollys home.

Very interesting !

By Symi |

Such an interesting visit ! Well worth the cost ! The 18 or so minute video is a must ! Such a short life and was such a legend.

Sorry, But No Photos ???

By Skeney57 |

I have been a music lover my whole life and first heard a Buddy Holly song around 1972 and loved the sound ever since. Especially organised our trip to include Lubbock Texas , the Wife asked Why? I said Buddy's birthplace ! Enough said, Right ? The Center is pretty small & the additional black & white exhibition was lost on me, knew very few of the subjects ? What I didn't like is the photo ban !! My wife & I are avid travelers and love revisiting our travels thru our photos , not just the memory cells ! The exhibitions were great & well presented and told Buddy's & the Crickets story really well but Is one of my photos going to destroy the financial viability of the place ?? Entry at $6 for seniors was great but rescind the photo ban while his fans are still around! But as the Duke & Buddy said, "That'll Be The Day" !!

Brings Back Your Youth

By Reese K |

This museum is really informative. We know the music and the story of the plane crash well. This place fills in the blanks and tells the whirlwind that was Buddy Holly's short life. If you are the right age it is a must see and if you love the music you will like it too.

Never get tired of visiting

By Irish4love |

We love this place and live in Amarillo, so it's an easy drive. We came for a wedding so we stayed overnight and visited this afternoon. I find out new tidbits each time I come . We also took the Bill Griggs trivia quiz, and that was fun.
Take the Allison House tour if you can. It's good insight into JI Allison and his family. Buddy,,JI and Joe B wrote several songs in there. They also have a list of homes that Buddy and his family lived in. Most are still there today.
The center takes 1.5-2 hours to go through, unless you really hurry. Lots to read. And there is a short film on Buddy's life to watch. The center itself is not real large and does have a gift shop.

Quick visit

By bernadettepresta |

quick visit for a restroom stop and photo op. Didn't see the actual museum. IN a nice area. Be sure and check out the statue across the road.

We went and listened typo live music! Very fun. I would have liked it better if we could bring our own food. The patio was a good size and the muaic waa good.

It was okay!

By Jane Moppers |

There was some stuff to do my kids enjoyed it and we had a good time, but after 30 minutes there it gets very boring!

Love the old phonograph records

The first thing to do in the center is watch the video/movie so you will get some background. Everything you can imagine is in there about Buddy Holly. Memorabilia, things he wore (including the glasses he was wearing when he was killed in the plane crash), old phonograph records, letters, etc. There are frames with letters that other well-known artists wrote about him (Paul McCartney is one). The center is very well done. It has a gift shop with all kinds of Buddy Holly souvenirs so you will surely find something you want. The center is small, and you can spend a half a day reading and looking at the collection or you can view it in 30 minutes if you prefer. If you are a Buddy Holly fan, rock 'n roll buff or just interested in music paraphernalia, you will want to see the Buddy Holly Center. The venue has other scheduled activities such as concerts, happy hour, etc. There is a lifesize statue of Buddy Holly across the street. The center is located at 1801 Crickets Avenue (named after his band), and there is a Buddy Holly Avenue nearby. Lubbock is proud of one of its most famous favorite sons! I enjoyed every minute of my visit to the center. You won't be disappounted if you like music, history or a well-told story.

I found myself singing with the songs that we were hearing, so much fun. Lots of memobilia and pictures.

This is an excellent museum on the life of Buddy Holly, who was one of the founding fathers of rock and roll. The center has acquired the house where Holly grew up and is furnished in period furniture etc.

Loved this little museum

By Robin B |

I loved this little museum. Yes it is small and you won't be spending hours here. But Buddy Holley's career only lasted 18 months. There is a short film and a small museum with timelines of Holley’s life, photographs and furniture and personal belongings of Holley. Be sure to schedule your visit at a time when you can tour the Allison house. The women that ran the gift shop and conducted the tours were friendly and knowledgeable. There is a large parking lot, restrooms in the visitor center and a nice gift shop.

Never get tired of visiting

By Irish4love |

I am a fan and love anything to read or see about Buddy Holly. This review is more about extra events around the Buddy Holly Center.
The special event of "The Day the Music Died " on Feb 3rd features a trolley tour, weather permitting. The museum curator is very knowledgable and uses a microphone to guide us as the trolley tours 4 sites; Lubbock High where Buddy went to school, The Fair Park Coliseum, where Buddy played, the old KDAV station, and the Lubbock Cemetery where he and his parents and sister are buried. It costs $5 a person.
Another tour that is worth your time is of Lubbock High School. The building was finished in 1930 and has rich history and details along with a display case of items chronicling Buddy's time there. Call Lubbock High School to set it up in advance. It takes about an hour to see it all. The school closes at 1:00 on Fridays, currently. The assistant principal who does the tour is very friendly and knowledgeable.

Small but Very Cool Museum

By MadameReverie |

I really enjoyed this museum while visiting Lubbock. The museum is very compact and can be easily toured within an hour. There are a number of interesting artifacts on display with Buddy Holy's music being piped in. The museum also features an interesting film about Holly's life and influence. There is a gift shop and a lovely outdoor seating area to enjoy. Across the street is the Buddy Holly Statue. Museum staff were very friendly and welcoming as well. Highly recommended.

Nice Museum

By empressellen |

Made it a point to stop here on a cross country trip. Learned a lot about how much he accomplished before his untimely death. (Also knew nothing about Clovis, NM's role in early rock & roll - visited there the next day.)

More than Buddy Holly

By marianne b |

Such an interesting museum! If you love Rock n Roll, be sure to visit. This museum goes beyond the life of Buddy Holly, covering who influenced Mr. Holly and what was going on in that time period. Great music plays throughout the exhibits.

Buddy Hly centre

By HiggyJay |

This is a must for Buddy fans. Allow 3-4 hours as there is an art gallery attached in the old station building also worth visiting.
Check on arrival for the tour times of Gerry Allison house next door

VERY IMPRESSIVE & WELL DONE

By Cherie G |

Extremely well done with memorabilia from Buddy's life (including pictures, report cards, class ring, contracts, clothing, guitars, records, etc). His life story from beginning to end. Great pamphlet explaining everything in each area in detail so you can view things at your own pace. Short film documenting his life. Dining room and bedroom furniture that has made it back to the museum, along with his famed glasses that were found at the crash site. Impressive to see his love for music, how he made a dream come true and how he has been a mentor & idolized for his style and technology at the forefront of rock and roll by so many that came after him. A Memorial Park is across the street with a bronze statue.

small museum

the museum was small and lacking items, not much to see, the drummers house that is on the property is the best part, i do recommend this museum still

Pilgrimage

By mobile277 |

Hi, visited The Buddy Holly Centre in April 2019.
My Husband is A lifelong Buddy fan, so this was a big deal for him.
We were visiting my family in FORTWORTH and my son in law kindly drove us up to Lubbock and back in a day!
Found the centre very good, very informative, with many pieces of memorabilia from Buddy Holly.
From there went outside to the plaza and the Buddy Holly statue, which was very good also.
Then we drove just a short journey of about 10 mins to Buddy Hollys grave, quite a moving moment. Not a big stone or anything just a simple stone in the ground, but well signposted.
All in all well worth a visit, got the usual warm Texan welcome that we are used to now.
Worth the long drive from FORTWORTH and back again in the same day as we also took in the Texan countryside.
Only one criticism, taking of photographs are not allowed and was enforced on the day we were visiting, it's such a shame because we know people travel from all over the world to see this attraction. However we have spoke to people who have took them anyway, but as I said it was enforced ridgedly on the day we visited!
But please don't let this put you off, the gift shop is well stocked with memrobillia.

A long awaited visit

By Ge0rdie89 |

After wanting to visit the center for 50 years I was delighted to see how well run it was. it was so interesting for any Buddy Holly fan with lots of memorabilia to see including his trade mark spectacles which he was wearing on the night he died.

Small center, easy parking, but surrounded by a nice park to honor others from the town

TripAdvisor wants me to use at least 100 letters, hope this satisfies them, lol

Awesome tribute to Buddy Holly

By Healey2012 |

This was our second time through Lubbock and we were fortunate this time to see the Buddy Holly Center. What an amazing collection of news articles, memorabilia, artifacts and the spirit of the great Buddy Holly. We were able to see the inside of the house next door to the museum where Crickets drummer Jerry Allison lived and some songs were written there. If you are in Lubbock don't miss it.

Great movie, memorabilia, home and store

The Buddy Holly Center has a great movie, memorabilia, home and store. Don't miss all of the places to take photos, even across the street.

Got to see the Man

By Katie B |

Excellent display and video. Well laid out and easy to move around. Small gift shop. Pity no coffee shop

Not much to to it

By Linda L |

Went there, and there wasn't much to it. Not worth the admission fee. Buddy Holly was a little before my time.

Nice slice of Texas and musical history

By cowboyred |

This museum, located in an original Lubbock train depot, has several parts with half dedicated to Buddy Holly directly and the other half to rotating exhibits. Worth coming to see when you are in the area.

Very comprehensive

By Ed H |

Buddy died very young and it seems they have managed to gather an amazing number of artifacts from his life in Lubbock. From old drawings he made in school to a pair of glasses recovered from the crash that took his life. Well worth the small admission fee. There is also an older (1999) documentary film which sets the scene nicely.

Buddy Holly City and Family Ties

By EMoreno59 |

Such a sweet tribute to a wonderful young man, family, community that placed Lubbock Texas on the map. The tour guide was wonderful. The memorabilia was beautifully presented. Thanks for keeping this young man’s contributions to music at the forefront of Lubbock’s tourism circle.

Informative

By Melodycthomas |

This is a small museum with limited viewings of the Holly house that was relocated to the site. There was an 18 minute video recounting the life and times of Buddy Holly. The gift shop was small. Be prepared to spend your entire visit reading.

Vacation

Great center to visit . Learned a lot about Buddy Holly, about his name , wife and family. Great art work and gift shop is very nice, great customer service.

It's a Must

By Roger L |

Don't miss this important part of Americana! Buddy Holly's museum gives everyone an excellent idea of the basis of our rock a billy & early rock. Put it on your bucket list!

What a gem!

By Tirzah D |

Any Buddy Holly fan would love it. It's pretty small which was a bummer, but it was put together very well. I didn't think it would look as nice as it did in the exhibit but I was impressed with how everything was displayed. There is also a short 15 min film to watch about Buddy. There is a gift shop with some cute stuff to buy. The staff was nice to us so no complaints there. We only spent about 40 mins there.

Music History Revisited

By Ron S |

This museum was the primary reason I visited Lubbock, Texas. I found the exhibits most fascinating and informative. This is one of the BEST museums of any type that I have been in in the 50 United States bar none. I really hadn't expected it to be as good as it was. Therefore, it exceeded every expectation that I had. The art gallery was amazing by some very clever artists. The exhibits galleries were so well done that at times it was overwhelming. Since I wanted to go to another venue before they closed I didn't get to fully indulge myself in the offerings. However, I am returning in September and very likely will go again to pick up what I didn't get to experience. So repeat visits are definitely worth it. Once note of caution, the gift shop to me was way over priced on every piece of merchandise. However, that did not stop me from spending money there, just be warned that it is pricey.

Memories of Buddy Holly

By Tony V |

I have always been a huge fan of Buddy Holly so when my wife and I had the opportunity to visit Texas this was No/1 on my bucket list. The venue is faily small but intimate enough to allow you to browse peacefully among the many artifacts on show. From focusing on his early childhood and progressing through his life as a Son, Brother, Band mate, Husband and iconic musical artist. Buddy's famouse Fender Stratocaster electric guitar and his Gibson acoustic guitar are there with photos showing him practising backstage at the Electric Park ballroom in Waterloo Iowa. Part of the guided tour includes the small house next door to the centre which is owned by Buddy Holly's drummer (Jerry Allinson) his actual drum kit is on display and Jerry still visits the house to this day. For music lovers and those of us who were around during Buddy's short life on this earth, this is a MUST VENUE TO VISIT. I Highly recommend it as there is so much more to see which I sadly havn't room for on this occasion.

Well worth the stop

By Peglova |

Make sure you watch the video! The overview and tributes are amazing. As a baby-boomer pre-teen, I was so enthralled with his music, and the exhibits brought back childhood memories and emotions. Our 11-yr old granddaughter read all the placards and was fascinated with his life story. Holly's wife and parents have done an amazing job encouraging and supporting this center.

Excellent regional museum, lots of memorabilia, but also useful critical interpretation

By coyotebanjo |

Excellent regional museum, lots of memorabilia, but also useful critical interpretation. Housed in the old railroad depot. Knowledgeable staff, rare films, a Paul McCartney tribute, and the fabled garage where Buddy and JI learned to play, right next door.

The roots of Rock & Roll started here!

By SMLeek69 |

If you are a Rock & Roll fan your visit to Lubbock should include a tour of The Buddy Holly Center. Buddy Holley's life, music and tragic death are well presented here. The well maintained building and displays provide an informative view into Buddy's life, his influence on our music, with the house where The Crickets started and includes a recording of a telephone conversation between Buddy & the owner of his record label. The center is also home to music education workshops, concerts & reunions. Much to enjoy here!

An excellent timeline of Buddy Holly's Life

By Darlene M |

The extremely reasonable $8 admission includes a "fine art" section which we did not see as we were only interested in the Buddy Holly display. Great memorabilia but you cannot take pictures, which was extremely disappointing. This is not a huge museum, more like a selection of very specific items that were either owned or used by Buddy Holly. There is a lot of reading to be done as you move throughout the room. Some beautiful guitars, many photos, the glasses Buddy was wearing when he was in the plane crash.

There is a small theater showing an 18 minute film but we could never get a seat. The gift shop is excellent.

Don't forget to take a picture of the giant glasses outside the Center, as well as cross the street to see the Buddy Holly statue. Lots of free parking.

Out of Town Guest Go To

By Tanya M |

Had out of town family in October and took them to the museum. I had not been there is quite some time and it was really nice to see the improvements since my last visit.

Exceptionally nice museum for rock n roll enthusiasts

By jaxtax |

We liked this small museum tribute to Buddy Holly. Could have used some interactive exhibits to immerse you in the experience though. Inexpensive, plan to spend about an hour here. The iconic black frame glasses in the front courtyard are cool.

A perfect approach to Buddy Holly's life

By speedy45rpm |

If you have even a passing interest in Buddy Holly, you have to come here. The museum is impressively laid out with as much Holly memorabilia as you could want, from the guitar he used making his famous Apartment Tapes shortly before his death, the glasses recovered from the Clear Lake crash site, lots of photographs and documents, and a very worthwhile film of his life which includes contributions from Paul McCartney, Keith Richards and many others. The modest home of Crickets drummer and lifelong Buddy Holly friend Jerry Allison is also on the grounds, perfectly preserved in its 1950s glory. This is where several of Buddy's hits were written. There are some touching photos from a reception held in this house after his funeral, including some of Phil Everly and the Crickets. Rock royalty in such a humble setting in that very different era. All in all an excellent collection.

Great look at the impact Buddy had on music...

By Deb Knox |

From the front of the parking lot right to the end of the exhibit I was mesmerized by the life of Buddy Holly. As a long time fan and avid music history buff I was impressed with all the memorabilia and actual items of his that were on display.
The Cricket's drummer JI Allison's house has ben restored and moved to the property and offers a glimpse into rural Texas living in the mid 50's.

An interesting collection

By Joma |

I was born after Buddy Holly died however I do remember my parents listening to some of his songs when I was younger. As such I had some idea who Buddy Holly was and found this to be fascinating.

The centre tells the story of Buddy's short life-he was only 22 when he died. Whilst you wander through his music is playing and there are lots of items of his displayed including his guitars, clothes and some of the letters from his record label. Even his famous glasses that were salvaged from the plane crash are displayed.

My sons however are both teenagers and had not heard of Buddy so the centre was wasted on them really.

For all fans of rock n roll history

By newmexjags |

We were in Lubbock to visit the Buddy Holly Center. I always listened to Buddy Holly as a kid, my Dad was a big fan. He always said that if Buddy Holly hasn't died, that he would be bigger than Elvis. The museum is so well done, I learned so much about Buddy Holly and the origins, early days of rock n roll..I thought I knew a lot, but didn't know as much as I thought. The story of Buddy Holly is bittersweet. A very very young man at the height of his life. Successful, a new husband, about to be a father. He only had an 18 month career, but he accomplished so much ! Paul McCartney says, no Crickets, no Beatles! Across the street is the Buddy Holly statue and Texas, Walk of Fame. We also toured the home of AJ Allison , the Crickets drummer
It's on the premesis. There's also a very good art exhibit and gift shop. We were there most of the day.

Worth a visit

By Pete W |

Very nice collection of his memorabilia, Take a slow walk thru the place and be sure to watch the short video, you will learn a lot about him and the crickets

Buddy Holly and all his Glory

By TreasuredPearls |

Buddy Holly is a classic. Must see, there is an admission fee. It is very reasonable. There is a short movie about his history and his music. The display and museum is a beautiful dedication to a rock star with too short of a career. He made an impact to many muscians all around the world.

The Day the Music Died

By Randy VV |

If you’re into history ... especially Rock ‘n’ Roll’s ... then Lubbock, TX and the Buddy Holly Center is worth a visit. Despite a rather brief musical career before his tragic death in an airplane crash in a frozen Iowa cornfield, Holly’s influence on the rock legends of the 60’s & 70’s such as The Beatles, Rolling Stones and more is evident. This is a small museum with a film, memorabilia and more. Unfortunately photos inside aren’t allowed.

Wonderful Place for Rock History

By Mary Beth C |

Can't believe it took us 4 years of trips to Lubbock before we finally decided to go see this gem. Has a wonderful movie-on-a-loop to hear the history of Buddy's life. Great museum with cool artifacts that will help the visitor travel through the beginning roots of rock and roll, and learn about things such as how the Beatle's got their name (hint...Buddy's band were the Crickets :). Don't miss this tourist spot!

Nice experience

By L H |

This was my first time to this venue and recently attended an Opera by Texas Tech students.
The venue was easy to find and there is a large parking lot.
When we parked we noticed a sign out front that mentioned clear bags only of certain size and no bags or purses. So two of us had to leave our purses in the car covered and go in without items we might have needed that were in our bags. Disappointedly once we were inside and before the performance began, we saw someone with a back pack, many attendees with shoulder purses as well as others with purses. We did notice one attendee with a clear bag but it was the size of a tote bag rather than a zip lock size bag.
So it was a bit irritating that the large sign outside that we adhered to was not enforced.
They need to take that sign down or enforce it.
Picking up at "Will Call" was easy and then to enter we went through metal detectors.
The inside entrance has a grand spiral stairway on each side and a large gathering area. There is a small bar area with snacks and candies along with drinks including cocktails and wine.
The items and pricing are posted on a board in front of the bar so you know ahead of time the costs.
If you are buying a cocktail or wine you MUST by a plastic souvenir cup for $3. It is a nice cup though with a lid. One of us got a single wine in a Sauvignon Blanc ($10) and it came in a small cup. Then the other ordered a Fools Paradise cocktail single ($10) at the same price but came in a cup twice the size of the wine. A box of candy was $5.
The seating is fairly standard design but they do have cup holders on the backs of the seats which made it very convenient in not having to hold the drink the entire time.
The seat aisles seemed a bit wider than some which made it easier to walk through people. The only issue with our row of seats is they seemed to be loose in that if one person got up, the seats in the row shook.
The performance was wonderfully presented with lovely voices, great costume design and set design. The music was very professional and on point with the actors.
A very nice venue especially in this smaller town.

Like a book with a few artifacts

By John B |

Mostly like reading a book. Not much to see except a few guitars and glasses plus lots of text you could read online. What about letting people listen to the songs through headphones? Gift store was best part.

Need to be a fan of the music

By BCSchoolgroup |

Very informative about the history of Buddy Holly's music including the pitfalls. Not expensive for what you see.

Very informative.

This is a fun part of Lubbock's history and is in the historical downtown area. They have different exhibits here and it is next to the Cast Iron Grill which is an iconic West Texas cafe always full of characters who love to eat down home food.

Must See when Visiting Lubbock

By Bryan W |

I didn’t know much about Buddy Holly, other than he was from Lubbock and died in a plane crash, but found this museum a lot of fun and full of information that I was not aware of such as: a) Buddy Holly’s professional career lasted less than 2 years before he died; b) but even in this short period toured England which inspired the Beatles (both name and career); and c) pioneered certain recording and musical styles. They had several guitars, a motorcycle, bedroom furniture and many other items which were personal belongings of Buddy Holly. Another great aspect of the museum, was the guided tour of the house which sits next to the museum. This house belonged to one of Holly’s band members, known as the Crickets (J.I. Allison). J.I. was the drummer of the band and they practiced in his bedroom which contained drums and a piano. A few years ago the house was about to be torn down, they saved the house and moved it to its current location on the Buddy Holly museum grounds. The interior of the house has been restored and furnished to mimic the Buddy Holly years as closely as possible by using pictures and actual input from J.I., who grew up in the house and is still alive today. The house tours are a part of the Buddy Holly Museum admission but are only offered as guided tours. This was a must see part of the experience. I recommend calling ahead and determining the times for the guided house tours and visit the museum accordingly. The tour guide was very attentive and seemed genuinely knowledgeable and interested in the History of Buddy Holly and the Crickets.

Don't miss the film

By TheGoBird |

If you are in Lubbock, don't miss this! The Center does a good job telling the Buddy Holly story and the tremendous influence he had on other musicians. Don't miss the film.

Museum is great. Don't miss statue.

By FortunaFan |

Loved it. Very informative. Such a tragedy to loose a musical prodigy at such a young age. He had a tremendous influence in such a short time. One suggestion for guest relations.....please let visitors know that his statue is across the street. They did not tell us. It isn't mentioned in any of the literature. (It should be). We missed it. Luckily we had time the following day to go back and it was free.

Such a fine tribute to a musical legend gone too soon

By Elizabeth T |

Hard to believe after going through this well-executed museum that Buddy Holly only had an 18-month career before his life ended in a plane crash. His impact on early rock-and-roll is still felt today. Worth a visit, particularly if you have music interests. Nice statue of Buddy and plaques honoring other musicians/entertainers across the street at the West Texas Wall of Fame.
Don't miss the tour of drummer Allison's home (on property)!

Visit to Buddy Holly

By Martha L |

I took a grandson here this month. It was an interesting visit and we both learned things that we didn't know about Buddy Holly. Take time to watch the video. Hint - We got in for 1/2 price, by presenting a receipt from the Silent Wings Museum. The visit only takes about 45 minutes.

The Buddy Holly Center is not only a fantastic tribute to a pioneer in rock and roll music, it is a living, breathing entity that provides ongoing events that always feature local musicians in Live Performance.

Buddy Holly Center Interesting Museum

By Berkeleybarb |

The Buddy Holly Center is outstanding tribute. The center has an 18-minute video about Buddy Holly and his contributions to music. The Museum has many memorabilia including his iconic glasses! The center also contains an art gallery featuring local artists and a gift shop. The center is an interesting way to spend an hour.

Interesting, but disappointing

By James B |

We visited this, but were disappointed in the displays. There are several display windows with various artifacts, but very little in the way of description of the items. The few descriptions there are are a bit hard to read. If you buy an admission to this you get an admission to the Silent Wings musuem for 50% off (and vice versa).

Not that great

By soonerlegend |

It's okay but you'd have to be a real Buddy Holly fan to enjoy this. Lots to read & a few memorabilia. The house tour is only allowed on their schedule. It's an ok stop and no waiting but will only take 30 min to an hour to see.

Place to visit

By davidmende |

We were impressed with the memorabilia that was on hand for us to see. We also read a lot of history about Buddy Holly we didn't know. Took a tour of the Allison house next door.
Neat thing to do while in Lubbock.

Buddy Holly lesson

By Pushinhornz |

A really cool history lesson at an affordable price. I admit I didnt know much about Buddy Holly but I do now after our visit here. A really great visit with a bonus at the end of the house where some of the songs were written.

something new and different to see

By Donald B |

nice education on the roots of music in the area. the bbq place close to the museum was a good place to eat as well.

Very well done center honoring Buddy Holly

By knjones46 |

I was very impressed with the center. The Holly and Allison families were very involved in developing the center and the amount of memorabilia was quite impressive considering how short Buddy's career was. Buddy's impact on music, including those who impacted him, was presented well through a wall exhibit and a short film showing at the time (May 2015). If I lived anywhere local, I would make a point of visiting the center periodically. If you're a lover of music, you'll definitely enjoy the center. Also, the outside wall honoring Lubbock musician's through the years was a very nice touch.

Buddy

Small exhibit chronicling Buddy Holly. Well done. Expect to spend no more than an hour. Very clean and inside the historic Depot. Admission is low cost and the ticket can also be applied towards a discount for the Glider Museum by the airport.

Amazing

By Christian J |

The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The Buddy Holly portion tells about the short but interesting life.
They also have a very nice art gallery.

Tiny but Enjoyable

By Liza K |

This museum is set in an old train depot which I found interesting. There is a small collection of memorabilia, a movie chronicling Holley's life, a gift shop, and an art room featuring local artwork (not related to Holley). I loved the big glasses outside the museum for photo ops though.

Add this to your Lubbock to-do list

Nice little museum. Takes about an hour to go through. Some neat memorabilia. Our young kids didn’t really enjoy it bc it’s a lot of reading but the adults did!

The day the music died

By John S |

We arrived late in the afternoon, but were able to see the center. As I already knew, Buddy Holly died in my home state of Iowa on February 3, 1959. The Center has guitars and other Holly memorabilia (no pictures allowed).

A Must Stop while in town

By DamTeag2015 |

We arrived 15 minutes until close. We were still able to tour. They have a lot of great items on display here. Love the layout and the history, well done. Very friendly staff.

Buddy Holly, his life and impact on the world

By Jill B |

Very interesting walk through Buddy Holly's life. Gives you understanding of the era, what influenced him, and the influence that he and the Crickets had on the world. (Beatles and Rolling Stones, anyone?) Neat to see the house where the band used to practice, with many historic furnishings. Not a huge museum, so the $8 admission might seem a little high, but once you pay admission here, you get half off admission at the Silent Wings museum which is really worth a look if you are a history / military / aviation buff.

A blast from the past!

By Mama Dee Q |

If you like 50's Rock & Roll, this is a must see. We enjoyed the video and the nice memorabilia museum. So many things we learned about Buddy that we really didn't know. Lubbock was also much larger than we anticipated! Great food as well.

Our Time to Remember

By JRP |

What a tribute to his talent that ended far too soon. Just before our time as we knew the Beatles who took their name inspired by the Crickets. Not to be missed loving tribute to one if their own. The plaza across the street has tribute plagues to other sons and daughters of music from Lubbock like Waylen Jennings and Mac David

The influence that Buddy had on the Beatles and other groups in England was new to me.and very informative

By Carol Y |

It is worth an hour or 90 minutes to visit the center and the statue across the street with the walk of fame with other musicians listed on the plaques

Lubbock trip

By Jellybean900 |

Both my husband and I are avid Buddy Holly fans and so decided to pay the centre a visit on our recent trip to Lubbock. It's a nice little centre with a a lovely shady outside seating area. Lots of great memorabilia and interesting facts about Buddy. Lots of original paperwork that was behind glass to protect it however, it was a little difficult to read some of it due to the low lights , maybe installing an audio tour would be a good idea. Also, as I mentioned they have a lovely shady seating are outside but no cafe to buy drink or food 😞. But, well worth a visit if you're a music fan

Step back in time

By snappytraveler07 |

Nice small museum and tribute to the local resident musician Buddy Holly.
Although it may only take you 30 minutes to go through the exhibit and time line display cases, nicely done. They also offered a inclusive tour of the drummers house of Mr. Allison that was saved from destruction.
In the summer months, if you go on a Thursday late afternoon, stick around for the free concert series in the courtyard.

Small but Informative

By mikefF2556WW |

The museum consists essentially of two rooms, one showing a 1990s movie on a loop where people who knew Buddy Holly talk about him and his historical importance, and another giving a timeline of his career and of pop music in the 1950s. That room has a few artifacts, mainly things Holly owned and a few playbills of shows he played and of other 1950s acts. For someone interested in musicology and the history of American pop music, it's a good place to spend an hour or two. The museum is adjacent to the Allison house, where one of Holly's musicians (i.e., one of the Crickets) lived and where they wrote some of their songs. We did not go there, so I can't comment on it.

Loved this place

By toadsoup |

Yes, this is a relatively small museum and you can't take pictures of most of the rooms but still, Buddy Holly! Entrance fee is $8 but $6 for Seniors (me) and $5 for students (any type)...so not too steep. I loved watching the 15 minute movie and buying a number of souvenirs. Was never a die-hard fan, but listening to his story and remembering the number of hits in Buddy Holly's short career made me more of a fan. This is the reason I picked a day trip from Amarillo to Lubbock just to see Buddy Holly's museum. We also got a chance to go inside the house of one of his Cricket band members (next to the museum - guess it is a replica or was moved here). You can definitely take pictures inside the house. The highlight of my trip to Lubbock.

Great afternoon

Had a great time here with my parents. There is a nice museum with buddy holly history and artifacts. They also have a very nice gallery that displays new artwork often. Gallery is free and you have to pay for museum part.

Learned a lot about Buddy Holly

By ayw1977 |

Just the right size for a great learning experience. I loved all the memorabilia. I enjoyed listening to his music while viewing all the details. Definitely worth the $8.

A lovely trip down memory lane

By Nina S |

Remember Buddy Holly? Remember the wonderful music that made your toes tap and made you want to get out onto the floor and dance? Immerse yourself in the past and learn all about that time 'way back when' and feel the nostalgia. We spent a lovely two hours there, reading the documents on display, looking at all the personal items of Buddy's that grace the museum, and remembering where we were when this song or that song hit the charts. Going away with one of the music books that holds all his songs was icing on the cake. Don't miss this museum!

Learned a lot

By Kriss Elliott |

I have heard about Buddy Holly throughout my life and picked up tidbits about his music and career. Did not know until my first visit to LBK that this was where he is from. The center provided some eye opening information on Buddy's raw talent and leading edge recording skills. Truly ahead of his time. Be sure to bring a mask. The staff strictly enforce...

Must see

By Lisa W |

If you are in Lubbock, you absolutely have to stop by here, especially if you are a music lover and/or a Buddy Holly fan. It is small, but there is a lot to see, including many items that belonged to Buddy Holly. Even his famous glasses are on display. There is a lot of history here, and right nextdoor is the house where The Crickets recorded.

Not much there

By wick1979 |

$8 per person to get in. It's a 15 minute film and 1 room of memorabilia. Was quite disappointed. They only offer tours of the home next door 1 time of day and it's not convenient as you can't spend more than 40 minutes here even if you watch the movie.

Fascinating place

By Sean_and_Jayne |

How could you come to Lubbock and not visit this place?
We visited, and took the tour of Jerry Allison’s home, which has been relocated next to the Centre. It is considered to be the place where many of the early hits were written.
You’ll hear stories as to how many of the songs were titled, which include “Peggy Sue” and “That’ll Be The Day”.
In the museum you will find many other artefacts and memorabilia which adds to the overall excellent experience.
Finally you can cross the road and see the statue of the man himself, which is a stunning likeness.
If you live music, you will enjoy a visit to this place.

A friend asked if we were going here

By Donna C |

If you are a big Buddy Holly fan, visit. If you just really like an air conditioned place to hang out for a little while, visit. If you have nothing else to do and it's hot and you can afford to go, then visit here. For seniors $6 each. I think it's $8 under 62. I do not recommend otherwise. Sorry. It is a nice venue, just not much there.

Awesome homage to the great Buddy Holly.

By Diane B |

Oh the things you can learn here! Fantastic homage to the great Buddy Holly. Makes you a little sad though. He was only on the music scene about 2 years and look at the impact he made. 22 years old when he died. Love the video showing those who were so influenced by him. JI’s house was a great exhibit. This is a great place to spend a rainy morning and then walk over to the Cast Iron Grill for great pie.

Simple

Ok Being that I am not a huge Buddy Holly fan but I do enjoy art here is my review. For starts this place is very extremely small. They only have 4 rooms to show.

I really enjoyed going to this gallery/ museum dedicated to Buddy Holly. I was a little disappointed that I could not take photos in the one area as I love to post photos for my friends.
It was very interesting loved the displays.
The pictures in the art gallery were so much fun to see. Overall an enjoyable experience.
Glad they gave me a senior discount also.

Small but very interesting

By StamfordBridge1905 |

This is a small museum but packed with plenty of information about one of the greatest singer songwriters of all time. I'm not sure what we were expecting as Buddy came from Lubbock and the museum was the reason for going to Lubbock. We were not disappointed with the museum.

Good place to visit before leaving

By Sarah S |

Cam here w/ my husband over Labor Day weekend. Even if you're not much of a Buddy Holly fan, coming here is still worth it. Entrance fee is cheap. There's a short film to watch and you learn how influential he was in the music industry. We also went on the house tour which is next door - belonged to the drummer. House was great to walk thru. I like these old houses - they don't make them like this anymore. I enjoyed the bathroom and kitchen. Nice photo opportunity outside in front of the large glasses.. Wish the gift shop had more trinkets to offer

Rave On

By Lisa R |

The Buddy Holly Center was a good starting point in learning more about this Rock n Roll influencer. Also recommend the Nor Va Jak Music Studio in Clovis, NM to learn where he recorded.

Loved this one, and also 3 others we visited in Lubbock...

By RickBrosseau |

Who knew that some of the coolest museums we'd ever end up visiting (and we've actually been to quite a few...) would be in Lubbock, Texas? (The others? American Windmill Museum, National Ranching Heritage Center, the Texas Tech Museum, and wish we had time to have seen the Silent Wings Museum...)

Like many reviews, we knew some of Buddy Holly's story (Mostly through Don McLean's song...), but this museum gives the full story about this tragically-short-lived musical genius. It's plenty big for the stories it tells, and the film shown in their theater is great.

Friendly & helpful folks made our visit even nicer and honestly...If you find yourself in Lubbock, TX, please do whatever you can to take in this very-reasonably-priced piece of American musical history!

Preserving historic Lubbock memories

By KG_TXtraveler |

This center was both a museum to Buddy Holly’s career as well as an art museum. The exhibits are small, but are well put together and worth an hour of your time. A great way to preserve historic Lubbock. We had our young son with us, but it was difficult to keep him entertained as the museum isn’t geared towards young kids.

Cool place

By Fischcmt |

We came here to fill some time and ended up having a good time. The center is small, but chocked full of really interesting facts and memorabilia. If you have extra time, definitely worth a visit.

Must-See while in Lubbock

By Mary P |

We enjoyed the Buddy Holly Museum. We did not realize that his incredible career only lasted 18 months with his tragic death at such a young age. There was so much information about him that we learned. Highly recommend!

Buddy Holly

By Donna N |

If you call yourself a Buddy fan, you must visit! A wonderful display of Buddy artifacts--including his last guitar and those iconic glasses. Great trivia kiosk set up for testing your knowledge. Well thought out display. Wish you could take pictures--or if there was a book of pictures available for sale. Nice gift shop

Interesting and a little sad

By MARCIE R |

So we went to the Buddy Holly Center. The pricing to get in wasn't to bad. They showed a revolving video on his life that was really quite interesting. I never knew he had so much influence on everyone from Elvis to The Beatles!!! They have his original bedroom set from when he was 17 years old, and the drawing of the house he was having built for his parents.

If you go make sure you see the drummers house next door. That was really neat to see how it was set up in the 50's. They even have about 95% of the original decorations and furniture!!

Make sure you get pictures with the huge glasses!!

A little expensive for what you get but really well done

By KirstenJill |

The Buddy Holly Center does a great job telling Buddy Holly's story. We're sad that we didn't get the opportunity to tour the adjoining house but I'd definitely recommend trying to do that.

The movie is a don't miss, as is the gift shop - lots of fun stuff there. The memorabilia is staged very well and I love how they did the timeline so that visitors can get a sense of Buddy Holly, regardless of their level of familiarity.

My only complaint is that the admission prices were a little steep for such a small attraction but I understand that funds are needed to keep this going. The experience was first class but there's just not all that much to see and paying over $30 for a family of four seemed high...but we don't regret the experience. Go if you find yourself in Lubbock.

Wonderful and sad story of the life and death of Buddy Holly

By Ginnie B |

This museum is a real find. Make sure you watch the 18 minute film before visiting the very interesting museum and artifacts of buddy holly. Next door and includes in the tour is the visit of the home of his drummer where Peggy Sue was written. Nearby is the statue of buddy Holly and the walk of fame. Definitely worth the trip. The staff is knowledgeable and very welcoming and accommodating.

A must see

By melb1965 |

From the second you walk in you are surrounded with the best of buddy holly . A truly informative stop ! Any and everything you wanted to know or see about buddy holly is here !

Great Piece of Music History

By A H |

This was part of a family outing during a family reunion weekend. The 16 minute film and artifacts about Buddy Holly's life were very interesting. I did not know about the tragic ending to Buddy's life. In addition to the self-guided museum tour, guided tours are available for the drummers house next door. We missed touring the art gallery because it is kind of tucked away past the gift shop down a long hallway. The Buddy Holly statue across the street provided a great photo background for our family picture. The museum is small, but if you take time to read the history with the artifacts, you can easily spend an hour to 1 1/2 hours here.

Memorabilia of a short life and career

By Cassidy C. |

We visited on a Friday early afternoon and had the place almost to ourselves. Basically, there's one large room with Buddy Holly memorabilia: A few guitars, letters written to and from Buddy, school memories, tickets, etc. Probably the best piece is Buddy's famous glasses, which were recovered from the plane crash site. Obviously, with his sadly shortened life and career, there are limited exhibits, but we enjoyed it. There was also a short video of Buddy's life playing on loop in another room, and another room with some of Buddy's furniture. Museum entrance also includes entrance to an art gallery with several pieces from local artists. We found some cute souvenirs in the gift shop, and took pics in front of the giant glasses outside the museum. Enjoyed our visit!

A nice tribute to Buddy

By Mike A |

We took a detour to come specifically here. Well worth the half day detour from the I-20! The entrance fee was not expensive and the movie and exhibits were really neat. Take a tour of the house too if the opportunity presents itself.

Brilliant.

By travellingkid |

We took our 15 yr old Buddy Holly fan here and it was amazing. It was great to see all the original artifacts and the staff were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful.
If you are a fan, this is the place.
You can also visit the cemetery which was simple, but moving. It's a beautiful cemetery. There is also a statue nearby and a walk of fame. Lubbock is a friendly place and it was worth the 5000 mile trip to get here.
We also got to see the original house that was used in Buddy's song writing days.
A very reasonable entry price too.

We really recommend this place.

By Keith Aho |

If you love his music and the history of his rather brief life you have got to see this place. It is a rather new facility, ADA accessible and wonderful restrooms. There is much memorabilia here and is loaded with history and timelines.

Buddy Holly Center was Awesome!

By Lorie Luiza |

This was a really cool exhibit and very informative. From the childhood home to his motorcycle just a fun place to visit. Definitely worth seeing!

Travel Back...

By Deena K |

Travel back in time and revisit the 50s when rock n' roll was new and Buddy Holly was THE MAN. Lots of exhibits to wander through to really get the flavor and talent of Buddy, including his early days with the Crickets. If you are a fan of rock and roll you can;t miss a visit to the life of an icon like Buddy Holly. even a huge mock-up of his famous glasses sit outside, marking the place to learn more about him. Don't miss this little taste of what made Buddy great.

Cool Place

By Deana C |

Geocaching brought me here. Just snapped the required photo and had to keep moving on. I traveled from CA to Austin TX to visit my daughter and drove back with my best friend who flew in to Austin.

Not too much to see

By louisguitare |

Very small museum.
If you are a fan of Buddy Holly it worth the visit witch include the tour of the drummer house, Allison.
Photo are nor permit, this is bad, 3 Holly Buddy's guitars, one Stratocaster, other are Gibson.

Great learning experience.

By Big Al |

This was a wonderful learning experience to find out everything about Buddy Holly.

If you're in the Lubbock area be sure to stop by the Buddy Holly Center

Very Informative, but repetative

By Robert C |

Buddy Holly had less then a two year career. I learned a lot of interesting things about him during the 18 minute movie. Then everything was repeated. Still a very worth while stop for any music lover.

More than iconic glasses

By ramonjtexan |

The museum and adjoining house is fantastic. The museum details his life, family and of course music. Lots of great memorabilia and family artifacts. Be sure to check hours before going but worth your time if you have an interest in his short life or music.

Interesting place of a historical music maker

By Joe P |

Buddy Holly Center focuses on the short lived career of early rock musician, Buddy Holly. His career was cut short when he was killed in a private plane crash.

Small but great museum, not just a hagiography

By dsimberloff |

Well worth it. All of Buddy's life, not just his tragic death, and well located in the context of music and culture of his era, with much about other musicians. Many memorabilia.

Must See for Music Lovers

By Sonja M |

It was very interesting to see all the memorabilia from Buddy Holly. The center is set up very nicely. Loved hearing all the music playing. Great to see the time line of his tragically short life. Take the time to visit. Did not care for the "art" that was shown in an attachment to the center.

Texas Tech College Tour

By Pattty F |

My 17yr. old daughter wanted to visit the museum and she was very interested in the information she got. She Loves music of all kinds and she knew most everything they had. Small and spent about 2 hours. The entrance fee is $8.00 per person not bad.

Rock and Roll History

By IdaIllinois |

This is an outstanding tribute to one of the greats who continues to inspire generations of rock and roll musicians and fans. There is an 18 minute film to introduce you to the life of Buddy Holley; you are then invited to visit the “museum” area which contains timelines, storyboards, and artifacts—including his glasses recovered from the crash site in Clear Lake, Iowa. In addition there is usually a changing exhibition which you are invited to visit; we got to see an artist that had works of The Day of the Dead. The gift shop is quite well-stocked. Visit the statue and West Texas Walk of Fame across the street.

Very nice!

By MarissaP-EnriqueP |

Although we didn't have the time to check out the center it was very nice outside. We had a great time taking pictures on the outside as we drove by for a quick pass.

Music history

By niceonept |

Buddy is a rock and roll legend.
If you're in Texas and you love music I recommend you visit this museum and pay respects to one of the most inspirational performers of all time.
There's lots to see but the museum doesn't match Buddy's greatness.
The shop is particularly disappointing. Why no record store with all releases available??

Fascinating music info

By mbdawn1 |

West TX music is historically one of the roots of good country music. Buddy Holly was fascinating. They also have a great collection of other music. In the summer. On Thurs evenings, they offer free live music, which is excellent! Families come and dance, sing along, & toast one another. Great fun!

I thought it would be bigger and better.

By Mishlz1 |

This was interesting, but I thought it would be bigger and three would be more to see. If you are not there for events of shows, it’s not that great. There are only two galleries of display. There are personal items, and a lot of reading on the timeline presentation. The second gallery is some personal furniture, one room. No photos allowed. They did give a coupon for half off the admission to the glider museum at the airport.

Fun

West Texas Original

I have been a Buddy Holly fan for nearly all my life and I finally got a chance to visit Lubbock and The Buddy Holly Center last week. It is an interesting place full of his music, memorabilia and memories. Buddy's stardom lasted for only about 18 months before his untimely death, but what he accomplished in such a short time is amazing. His music seems as fresh today as it was in 1957. The Crickets were a tight musical group with nothing more than drum, bass and guitar and the music they created is timeless and everlasting. The Winter Party tour in late 1958 and early 1959 was a cold, depressing end to a rocketing career. This is a must-see for any rockabilly fan and I am so glad, at age 76, to finally experience it.

Music is always good

By Sheila D |

We stopped in Lubbock just to see the Bubby Holly Museum. We did find out it was open six days a week but closed on Monday. Well you know we were there on a Monday. Sooo we stayed an extra night and enjoyed our visit to the museum. I did think that the gift shop was very overpriced. I did buy a small key chain with those black glasses and I believe that cost almost $7.00. I would have bought more but the prices we just to high for me

Nice museum

By Myvette68 |

Stopped by to see the museum while in Lubbock so glad we did it's a really cool place with lots of history. Concert in the park at night was great the statue is a fitting tribute.

Fun fun

Oh Boy, this is really good

By puddinguk |

A small but excellent museum dedicated to the singer Buddy Holley. There is a small movie show and then you are free to wander around and take in personal memorabilia from his short life. Things like his old school report and his glasses we found particularly moving. The lady on the desk was particularly friendly and directed us to where we could see his grave.
Outside there is a statue and memorial.

Must-see for music enthusiasts when in Lubbock

By autumnpoem |

This small museum is very well done. You know how sometimes you go into a smaller, boutique museum and it's just a room and it's cobbled together and unimpressive? This museum is not that.

Entry is $8 for a regular ticket and $5 for students, not necessarily Texas Tech students. The primary room is super informative and readable. I feel like I learned a lot about Buddy Holly from this visit: His band was called The Crickets, which influenced The Beatles' name. He passed away when he was 22. He was married.

An additional room contained his high school bedroom furniture. There is a gift shop where you purchase your entry ticket. And there is an art gallery. When we were there, they had a photo exhibit. No photographs are allowed inside the museum.

I highly recommend a visit to the Buddy Holly Center if you're in Lubbock.

Poor visitor relations !

By Tammy K |

When out of your way to visit and saw a few guys working out front ask if it was open and trip advisor said the center was open . So We walked in . Looked around a bit we were quickly met with a sharp toned lady asking how did we get in and made us feel like a thief. She we should have checked the web site like normal people. As she showed us to the gate and then proceeded to scold the works for letting us in. We DID not know it was closed for a remodel. She sure made us feel like dummies

very cool memorabilia from the early years of rock and roll

By Cynthia A |

This was a short visit to the museum, usually 45 minutes or so for a tour of all the rooms in the museum. Nice memorabilia.

Great time spent

By DrLisa15 |

The museum is wonderful. Be sure to get there for the "house" tour, which is only given at certain times. This was Buddy Holly's drummers parents house where they practiced and wrote songs. It has been fully restored and brought to this location. The guide was young but well trained in all the information and trivia.
