Beautiful service and great environment. Right on the water with a dock to the river. So much LOVE! I cannot wait until next service.

While this church is the oldest building in town, it's really that most of the town was devastated by a fire in the 1800's. As a result, very little other than the houses on this short street are authentic and original. The church is worth taking a photo or two mainly for the beautiful landscape. Walk down to the dock to get a nice view of the water. Not much else to walk to, although wandering around the neighborhood was fun for house watching.

As English people we are used to very old churches in England, but this little gem was so pretty with its beautiful location and gardens. Good to see it is still used and cherished by the congregation..

Beautiful Anglican church (formerly Episcopalian), still active today. Our knowledgeable docent gave us some historical facts and current events relating to the church. Definitely worth the time.

The location was so pretty and peacful. The scenery was beautiful. They do give a little tour which we did not do.

This historic church is well worth a visit to enjoy scenic views of the May River in Bluffton, SC and a well-preserved house of worship dating back to the antebellum years. A docent is usually on hand to give free tours of the church interior. While there, take advantage of purchasing a jar of "Holy Honey" made by the bees who reside far above the main entrance.
Very unique indeed.

The service was uplifting and the history inside was amazing.
It takes you back in time. You can imagine families of long ago sitting in those pews for Sunday service.

We attend the contemporary service on Saturday evenings and just love it. It doesn’t matter who is doing the service. They are all excellent. We also usher once a month. We have been members for about 8 years. Our first visit was Palm Sunday and we were so impressed with the service.

We took friends of ours to tour the Church of the Cross. I believe the church itself is over 200 years and it is a fascinating place to tour. One of the most interesting facets of the church is the fact that it is located on the May River. It is a wonderful and picturesque scene to stand up on the hill overlooking the river. All in all, this is a place you will want to visit if you come to Bluffton, SC.

We stopped by here when the church was closed. The grounds are pretty and offer a nice view of the May river. The dock is just down the small bluff from the parking lot. It was worth the quick look even if we didn't get to hear about the history.

Is truly a must see historic place of worship that has a real store to tell. It was built in the mid 1850’s and is on the National Register.

We went to Bluffton on a rainy day and looked to see what we could see. This was a must see place. We truly enjoyed the lady that walked around with us and told us about the history of the church. If it had been sunny we would of walked the grounds. They looked beautiful. If you enjoy looking at churches and their individual beauty then you need to see this property.

almost could not believe the wonderful condition of the church for its age of over 160 years, still with the woodwork that it was used to be built in the 1850's.. nice free tour, they do take donations for upkeep. still have sunday services. a great organ and grand piano. well worth a visit.

Be sure to plan your visit when the docent is there and get the tour of the inside including a bit of it's history not to mention the scenic May River, perfect for pictures.

This is one of the historical sites that you can still go into on the walking tour map we picked up from the Heyward House Visitor Centre. It has been amazingly preserved and continues to be in service to the community. The building is pristine as are the surrounding grounds that overlook the May River and scenic views. The church is within an easy walk around the historic area and does have on-site parking available when there’s no church service.

We got lucky- a docent who was preparing for a tour the next day practiced on us. We got the history of this old well maintained church.

This is a very pretty and historic church. Best part is that it is still an active Christ worshiping church!

If you're in the Bluffton area don't miss the chance to view this magnificent and historical church. The morning I was there they were holding a food drive so I wasn't able to go inside, which I'm sure is equally wonderful, but just walking the grounds outside is certainly worth the trip. There are many churches and chapels in the Carolina's that rise to must-see status, and The Church of the Cross is high on that list.

I am a wedding officiant and have married 883 couples and one of the prettiest venues is on the bank of the May River at the Church of the Cross. Very beautiful location for a small wedding!

Went there for Sunday services, Anglian, never been before, great pastors, great message, in a 200 year old church in old town Bluffton

Beautiful little church. The message was memorable and relevant. Pastor was very good. Eight o'clock service was somewhat casual. Congregation was welcoming.

This beautiful church sits on a bluff overlooking the estuary, a terrific view (and a great place to come and picnic, by the way), framed by oak trees dripping with Spanish moss. The street outside the church ends in a walkway down to the public dock, one of the most peaceful places we've been.

We visited several churches after moving here from Iowa. This church has a good mix of traditional for my husband and contemporary for me. It's a perfect fit!

Pleasantly viewed the church and the people who give you the history of this church also gives you a magnificent history lesson of the area as well. Truly dedicated personnel and extremely inviting. Enjoyed it greatly!

Beautiful original church in historic center. Beautiful location on the May River. Worth a visit and talk with the docents.

It's a great place to review slaves history in respect to there religion with the slave owners. It's a must see place when in Bluffton or Hilton Head SC. You will not be disappointed.
We bring all of our out of town gust there all the time.

One of the must do when visiting Bluffton for sure. The volunteer at the church described the history of the church from pre- civil war, to its use during the civil war, through the restoration to its original design after the war. Beautiful sight to visit.

This church is beautiful and has been well maintained. There is an active congregation there. It was amazing to think back to all the people that have worshipped here through the years. There are amazing stained glass windows that match the lovely shades the walls are painted. The rich polished wood has withstood the passage of time. It was a very moving and worshipful experience. Also enjoyed the delicous honey that is for sale here that is made by the bees on the church property.

Beautiful church in Bluffton old town. Located right on the water. Go at sunset, the views are stunning. Plenty of parking. Favorite spot in Bluffton.

I feel odd rating a church but they are so great, it's easy to term them excellent. They make everyone feel welcome and have terrific ushers. This might be a little biased since I am an usher there

We find a very delightful docent today at the Church of the Cross, and we learn that she was courted by a gentleman of French descent, who advised her that his French name meant Wild Horses (a romantic story.)
The Church of the Cross has a rather unique columbarium.
The Church of the Cross has a Saturday night informal service, a Sunday 8:00AM “aerobics” service with standing and kneeling (which we prefer.)
However, it is the Sunday 10:00AM service which we choose to attend. We take care to ask about which pew, and while the docent is ecumenical, we will ask again on Sunday morning.

Great church to go see in Old Bluffton. We went during palm sunday and went to the service they had, everyone was very welcoming and wanted to celebrate this day with anyone who wanted to celebrate it.

Very beautiful and historic church on the Maye River. Don't miss a guided tour.
This church is not to be missed.

This Historic Church dates back to the Civil War. It is situated on a beautiful site immediately off the May River. It should be must visit!!

Well worth the short walk to the end of Calhoun street. This church has an amazing history and the views from the grassy lawns on the bluff (Bluffton...get it?) are fantastic.

Oh, this is such a beautiful beautiful place to see. Ladies working on the church were friendly and so knowledgeable. Be sure to check out the bees at the church!

This church sits on a scenic bluff that overlooks the May River waterway. Although we had visited the grounds before, there was a sign outside that said a docent was on duty so we walked in and had a nice chat while admiring this centuries old church. It has withstood various acts of mother nature, along with the Civil War, but is still a peaceful, thriving house of worship. Take a few moments to sit in a pew - it is a lovely spot!

We were told BY THE RECTOR WE WERE NOT WELCOME AS MEMBERS
After months of attending services we wanted to become church members.
NO.

A must stop when visiting Bluffton, SC. The church is beautiful and calming. The guide is very informative.

Overlooking the May River, this church has an amazing history and is absolutely beautiful. Take the time to sit in one of the pews and absorb the serenity of the church.

We love traditional Anglican church in this gorgeous church. All pastors have wonderful messages and the location can not be beat.

We were just passing Thru Bluffton and stopped by. It was just about closing time but the docent was kind enough to tell us a bit about the church history and let us wander around. We will return for the whole tour and would recommend this stop if you are in Bluffton. We will also try to attend a service.

You feel the warmth of this Church even before entering due to well kept old style grounds. Inside, a wood floor and beautiful atmosphere. Sermon was inspirational and music matched the mood.

Prefect place to take pictures or have a picnic. really relaxing by the water. i love spending quiet time down here

Stop by this lovely waterfront church when you are in Bluffton, SC. Located on the river's edge, the grounds are picture perfect. A must on your walk around town.

Great place with some great history. Went there and got a small tour but just walked around the grounds and took in the area. What a beatiful church.

This church is simply beautiful. We enjoyed touring it. It is very simple yet stunning. The grounds on the bank of the May River are breathtaking. Well worth the visit.

This church and the location are both stunning. The best part is that they have bees in the rafters and sell the honey.

Let me tell ya,.....if the trees don't talk to you, then I don't know what does. This has been my little peace of heaven bringing my blanket, and whatever you like to sip on, and just look and listen. I'm tellin you,,,,,this place captures your heart!!!!!I fell in true love....in Bluffton.

Landmark in Bluffton. Very pretty church looking over the water. Grounds are nicely done. Good place to take some family photos

Just a beautiful building in a lovely location. I always walk to it after having lunch in the village.

I wish we had been in the area long enough to attend a worship service here. It was such a beautiful place, inside and out!

Historically beautiful church overlooking a 20 ft bluff on the May River at the end of Calhoun St in Old Town Bluffton. Most likely the most photographed of any place in the vicinity.
The church has a large and growing congregation that extends to several church campuses in other areas. Services are in the Anglican tradition with many generations of congregants mixed with new attendees. Very welcoming bunch of people and great, uplifting messages by three different ministers onboard.
Docents are often available for tours, or just go on Sunday for a sermon!

Honey bees in the wall of the church. Old church, locked. grounds kept up, I cant say anything else about it.

Beautiful Church with large amount of Activity, always people going in and out. Good services, friendly people, beautiful setting and building.

Beautiful place to visit! Was our 1st trip to Old Bluffton & I was amazed! This church is breath taking when you go inside.

This beautiful church anchors a public landing of the May River. It is lovingly maintained by parishioners. Not sure who provides the elegant, understated wreaths during holiday seasons, but sometimes I wander down just to be inspired by them. Bring your camera to capture the beautiful exterior. Having been spared the fires of the Union Army, The Church of the Cross continues to welcomes worshipers and visitors alike.

At the end of Calhoun Street right off the river in Old Town Bluffton is a gorgeous construction that speaks to you right away of spirituality. Walk around the exterior to find beauty and balance, take pictures of details to center and focus, and then walk into the church itself. As you open the doors, prepare for a sense of serenity--within the church and yourself.

If you visit Bluffton it is well worth the extra five minutes it takes to drive over to the church. The view from the well manicured lawns is lovely and serene.

Beautiful quaint church with original wooden pews and windows from the 1700’s. One of the local deacons was on staff and filled us in on its rich story including taking us out back to see where the honey bees have taken up residence and how selling the honey helped provide income in the lean years and still to this day, we bought 2 jars, um, um good!
The side yard overlooks the May River with its green luscious lawn and the cool breeze from the river made for a beautiful sunset!

This church is different in architecture than most church - it is rather new-gothic, the grounds around the church are also beautiful

Whether you're getting married or renewing your vows, you couldn't pick a more romantic place. Start at the alter with the view of the low country, reception at Buffalos and then end the day with dinner and beginning of your honeymoon at the Inn or private cottage.. Expensive , YES, but memorable. The people, the food, the accommodations and service is Montage famous. One of my top five destinations in the United States.

be sure to check out this historic and beautiful church and its properties. A docent should be on duty so you can get inside and also to see the famous bees. I could love here....

An amazing piece of architecture, the buildings on the grounds are beautiful. It is definitely worth a trip even if you don't go inside. However the inside is definitely something to see,

What an absolutely beautiful church! Inside and out, it's so historic and just so lovely!
The docent on duty was very knowledgeable and friendly. He made us feel very welcome.
We were there Christmas Eve (day) and the church was decorated for the evening's service. It was almost too lovely for words!

I can walk here from my house and e minute I hit the bluff any little thing bothering me goes away. The church is so beautiful and the land it sits on even more so.

Beautiful church, beautiful area, great people. Sunday services are packed. Get there early to get a seat.

We didn't go inside but the place is beautiful and its right on the May River. You can go down on the dock and watch the local boating in the river

what a great place to go and worship God. Staff is very friendly and the messages are always "ppint on". The scebery is breath taking. A true historical spot to be in a service with God

Beautiful classic old mission church on a Bluff right on the river. Open to the public and docent was there to tell us all about the history. It’s worth the walk to the end of the road to check it out.

Very impressive structure, landscaping and location on the river.
Too bad we couldn't get inside but that gives me a reason to return.

Old Churches are so much a part of our History here in the US and throughout Europe. The Church of the Cross is just another example. There was a Docent present and she made the visit even more enjoyable. The grounds are lovely. There is an informal burial ground right across from the Church. Lovely views of the May River too. Spend some time in the charming downtown too, several galleries featuring some very talented local artists.

Church is historic and beautiful. Chuck Owens is a wonderful minister and person. The services offer something for everyone. We will go back.

I have been to cathedrals, monasteries, and churches all around the world and I honestly don't think I have seen anything more beautiful than this place. There is something special about this place and it is evident as soon as you walk around the small property.

We were unable to get into the church, as it was locked, but walked around the grounds some. It is visually very appealing and scenic. They still have services here too.

The Church is in a beautiful setting along the May River. They have docents there that can explain the history. when down in a Bluffton, SC. A must to visit

The Church of the Cross is a great meeting place on the banks of the May River. It is open and there was a docent to tell us about its history. A lovely old building with lots of history.

Discovered The Church of the Cross quite by accident as we drove around historic Bluffton. One of the most beautiful historic churches we have seen in the United States. The flowers in the gardens were all in bloom and the contrast with the wood framed Church was spectacular. The Church also looks out across the river. Wonderful photo opp. The Church wasn’t open so we plan to visit later in the week,
.

This historic church (built 1854) is worth a visit, not least because the building is attractive and the longleaf pine construction is quite unusual. Admission is free, though donations are welcomed. The history of this church is fascinating. The docent who led our brief guided tour was friendly and very knowledgeable. If you have time, walk down to the nearby dock, which offers a photogenic view of the waterway and wetlands.

A very neat spot to see. It's a very interesting place architecturally, but also a good spot to note from a faith-standpoint. The grounds are also impressive. We attended the 5:28 pm service on Saturday night. Very glad to have done that. Good worship music and good message from Pastor Chuck. Highly recommend stopping in. (The picture attached was taken in a very rare moment when they had snow in early January 2018.)

Kay & I enjoyed visiting this beautiful old church overlooking the May River in Bluffton near Hilton Head. Had an interesting overview from a friendly Docent who described the Church’s history and a recent service with over 50 river baptisms. Kay found a recipe book to add to her collection. The Church has a great ministry in the area with a school and outreach programs.

The setting is peaceful and beautiful! History abounds! During the Civil War, the sanctuary became a stable for the horses. There is an active, working congregation.

So much history in this area, so much beauty also. Just walking around the church was interesting and the small town of Bluffton is delightful.

We love going to the Buckwalter Campus for the Contemporary Service. We also went to Midnight Mass Christmas Eve which will become a tradition for our family. Enjoyed the teaching and meeting others

I am a wedding officiant and have married 921 couples and one of the prettiest venues is on the bank of the May River at the Church of the Cross. Very beautiful location for a small wedding!

This is a beautiful and historic old church. Theresa Delefosse meet us at the entrance and she was so pleasant and personable. She told us all about the church and its history. She was full of information and you could tell she was devoted to the church. It is not just a little historic church., they have a very large congregation and many ministries. Theresa, i when we move down you will definitely see us again seating in those beautiful pews. I would suggest everyone stop in for a visitpi

We visited the church for the first time when looking at real estate in Bluffton. The church is very interesting and historic.
The docent gave us the history of the church and many interesting facts. We highly recommend a stop at the church.

Very old Episcopal Church at a fantastic setting. Two services on Sunday's traditional and modern. Pews have doors that I was told kept the dogs out of the pews back in the day?

Charming church on the river. Go late in the day when the sun is setting for beautiful rays casting on the grounds. LOVELY!

Do you like history? Do you like old Churches? Then if you are in Bluffton you need to stop in for a visit. The Docent was very informative and answered many questions from my young son. It’s a lovely place to visit.

Situated at the end of Calhoun Street, on a bluff overlooking the May River, the Church of the Cross offers a lovely setting just to walk around and admire the view. The doors are rarely open, but if you are lucky enough (or plan it right) to visit when the church is not locked, you will be able to step inside and see the beautiful, historic church. I recommend that you check out the church's website for the history of the church to help you appreciate it even more.

This church has an interesting history and is beautiful. The show-stopper is the location high on the bluff overlooking the May River. Park on May River Road or along Calhoun Street and walk down to the end of the street to the church. Take in the book store, art galleries, shops, restaurants and cafes along Calhoun.

This church has been lovingly kept in excellent condition. It is also right on the May River so the scenery is breathtaking. A must stop even if you aren't Catholic to view this place.

One of the only structures in Bluffton that was not burned by Union Troops during the Civil War. The Church is a Gothic Revival-style originally designed by Edward Brickell White in 1853. The church’s first service took place in July of 1857.
Located at 110 Calhoun Street, the Church overlooks the scenic May River. I'm told the Church of the Cross has survived hurricanes and wars, and has attracted generations of worshipers for more than 150 years.
The Church of the Cross, on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975, features heart pine siding, cathedral ceilings and pink glass imported directly from England. Fanned arches with a look of palmettos top its mullioned windows that are framed by latticed shutters.
Attended Christmas Eve mass this year. A beautiful service to attend.

The Church of the Cross in Bluffton, South Carolina, is a beautiful little church with a big history. The church sits on the bank of the May River with spectacular views. The one of a kind exterior is of exquisite rustic design with a simplistic interior. I would recommend taking a camera. There are guides inside to answer all of your questions.

An interesting old church that is one of the few Civil War survivors in Bluffton, SC. Docent provided interesting details about the history of the physical aspects of the church as well as current use / membership.

Right on the Bluff, gorgeous inside and out. Anglican service. Old boxed pews. Nice sermon. A must see for visitors but also very inviting for guests at services.

We toured the property on the outside and took pics of the building. Great church! Then we attended service on Sunday to see the inside, WOW. Really beautiful ceilings and woodwork. I can't believe how old it is and it still looks new. They do a great job keeping it up. Wonderful condition and nice people. Catholic mass in case you're not aware. I used to be Catholic so it was very familiar.

The guide was gracious and knowledgeable of the history of the Church and how it was spared from being burned down prior to the civil war.

The architecture of this church is simply stunning....a must see while visiting bluffton....the red trim windows, vertical wood beams and the stunning views makes this church one of the prettiest I have ever been to. I also have attended service here and the pastor was kind, friendly and gave a great message. We felt welcomed there even though we were visitors.

Beautiful old church in downtown Bluffton.
Great music and the priest delivers wonderful messages.
Easy parking and was nice to see so many locals attending the services.
Very welcoming congregation.

This is the perfect place to finish your day with a tour and then the sunset from the banks of the May River with this historical church as a wonderful backdrop!

One of my favorite places in Bluffton. Beautiful architecture and great views from the river banks. A must see! Easy drive and while we were interested in attending services.....we didn't. The size of the congregation was surprisingly large. If visiting the area you will not be disappointed!

One of the most beautiful and quaint spots in Old Town, a must see. The view of the May River is amazing, especially in Spring when the Azaleas are in bloom.

The church is simple but beautiful. Be sure to chat with the docent as the knowledge they posses is amazing.

It was a fun day in old Bluffton with little shops, restaurants and discovering this old church with its beautiful landscapes and view of the water. Very enjoyable outing !

This is a lovely church in a fine setting. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get inside the church to see the interior. Still, the church and its setting are splendid on a nice spring day.

We weren't able to go into the church on our visit, but walked around the grounds and enjoyed the views and gorgeous sunset. Definitely worth the short ride from the center of town.

A great and historic place to visit.
Depending on the day it is a great place to visit , stroll down the ramp to sit by the water and just soak it all in...
A great spot to enjoy.

Whether you want to worship or just explore this church is worth visiting. The Architecture, view and surrounding area is breath taking. I LOVE the Easter sunrise service that is offered at the crack of dawn. It's outside, you watch the sunrise over the May river and it takes your breath away!

Enjoyed a visit here with our entire family including two seniors and two middle aged children. Everyone had a wonderful time viewing the beautiful setting and the gorgeous inside of the church. The docents on site were amazing and we could have talked all day. Worth a visit while in bluffton.

This beautiful old Church is the #1 Tourist Attraction in Bluffton, S.C. It is located on a lovely bluff over looking the beautiful scenic MAY RIVER. Almost always there is a pleasant breeze, even on a hot, sultry day. To enter is to commune with God, you can almost hear the choir sing...it is good for you!

Beautiful historic church in a very historic setting on the river. Grounds were picturesque. Church was locked. Check their website for hours.

Tis a grand day.
We have been visiting the Church if the Cross for nearly 50 years, and today there is a volunteer docent to lead the group in a history lesson.
We are always indebted to local volunteer historians.

Church of the Cross is a beautiful landmark of Bluffton! You can attend church services on Sunday. The interior is old fashioned wood and soulful. Worth a stroll a stop if you go to Old Town Bluffton.

Stunning views of the May River and gorgeous grounds make for fantastic photo opportunities. Its so peaceful and quiet- just love it here.

A visit to The Church of the Cross while you are in the area will be well worth it. This Church is over 150 years old and sits on a beautiful bluff overlooking the May River. Tremendous history and very scenic.

Beautiful church. Was breathtaking and a great photo spot under the spanish moss. On the water so you have a beautiful 1767 church then the grounds to walk thru.

Saw this on our self guided tour of old Bluffton. Looked like a cool church but were there around 1000am on a Saturday and it was locked up tight.

Gorgeous church and grounds. Bring you camera for wonderful pictures from the bluff or with the church. Quick stop but worth it.

Beautiful old church right on the May River. Fantastic location in very quaint and fast growing Bluffton,SC. Great lunch locations within walking distance. Must see both inside and outside of church to appreciate. Well worth the visit.

Honey dripping off the cross above the door. No other words are necessary to describe this local institution. A "must see" if you are visiting Bluffton.

This is a well maintained old church that the Yankees didn’t burn down during the Civil War. It has gorgeous grounds set high on the May River. Definitely worth a visit to see. They even offer a tour if you’re interested.

Always a highlight of a trip to Bluffton. The church is well maintained and sits in a quiet corner of Bluffton along the May River. Stroll around the grounds and walk down to the adjacent dock along the river. A restorative and inspiring place.

beautiful pre-civil war church on bluff overlooking May River. Docent led tour very interesting. Grounds are also lovely and peaceful. Great place for photos. A couple was there having engagement pictures taken.

I love to take my company to Old Town Bluffton which includes this Church building right on the May River. We were fortunate to be there on Baptism day when there were about 40 to 50 People being baptized in the river. It was an amazing experience!

Saw this on a Visitors Map and decided to check it out. On the way we passed a cute European Bakery called Twisted and decided to grab a snack first. The girl at the counter told us the Church was right on the May River and had benches outside to sit and watch the boats and dolphins. So we took her advise and our “delicious” box of goodies to the river. The Church was really beautiful. Very unique, and quaint. Inside and outside was such a peaceful setting. We sat on the bench outside and enjoyed the view, the dock, boats, dolphins and great pastries from the bakery. Glad we found both spots and recommend worth the stop.

During a 2 week break in Hilton Head Island I was fortunate enough to spend an afternoon in Bluffton . The Church of the Cross is a beautifully preserved building in an idyllic spot looking onto the May River. Bluffton is a pleasant small southern town with lots of interesting shops selling crafts , art and trinkets. It has a homely feel and had a market running with local produce on the day we visited. It made a welcome and pleasant change from the gated communities on Hilton Head Island .

The Church of the Cross is located at the end of Calhoun St. in downtown Bluffton and is a charming historical building with beautiful architecture. The church has services on Sundays, but can be viewed during the week. There is a docent to give you the history of the church and a tour of the church and property. Bring your camera and this a beauty! You can come anytime and picnic on the banks of the May River where the church sits. It is such a beautiful setting and a peaceful one. The sunsets are the best there.

We stumbled on this church while driving around Bluffton, and what a find. We were fortunate to have a docent on site who took us through the church and it's history. The timber ceilings and the building are awesome. A huge pipe organ and real grand piano that was donated and recently refurbished must provide incredible music. Others have reviewed how the church was spared during the Civil War. Although the property is owned by the Episcopalian denomination, the congregation voted to be Anglican. That is an interesting story in itself. You won't regret spending time at this historic site.

One of very few structures surviving the Civil War. Docent excellent. Property is now in very good condition.

We stumbled upon this church while visiting Bluffton, and fortunately a member of the congregation was inside and gave us a comprehensive lesson on the history of the church and the role of Bluffton in the Civil War. Very educational and interesting.

Where Calhoun Street ends at the May River, the historic Church of the Cross consecrated in 1857 is located on a picturesque grassy bluff. The sense of peace and tranquillity on the church property is wonderful. The gothic cruciform structure designed by the architect E.B. White has palmetto topped mullioned windows with lattice shutters. The rose colored glass in the windows was imported from England. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic of Historic Places in 1975.

This old church has quite a history, and is located on beautiful grounds next to the river. A docent is available to provide helpful information. This is also meeting place to begin Old and New Bluffton Tours.

Just down the road from The Cottage Restaurant you encounter this historic church. It sits along the river where you can find a bench to watch the sun shimmer on the water and possibly catch a glimpse of some dolphins. The Cross has a beautiful construction and nicely kept gardens. You will enjoy a nice walk at this resting stop.

We were walking by and noticed a tour forming. The Docent ask us to join and we did. We learned a lot about the history of the area and the Church. The Church is one of the few building left untouched after the Civil War. The tour is free and well worth your time. If you are interested in the history of the area this is the tour for you.

The church is pre-civil war with a magnificent story of how it survived when 99% of the city was burned. The docent was knowledgeable and very interesting. The house behind it has an equally interesting story of how it survived. Historic downtown has great shops with crafts and home-made goodies. On Thursdays there is a Farmer's Market with everything from crab soup to chocolate.

The Church of the Cross is one of the few buildings in Bluffton that the Union army spared. It sits on a bluff overlooking the river and is accessible by boat.

On my way to visit Savannah River Front District for the afternoon I stopped in Bluffton, SC. I had seen other trip advisor comments on The Church of Cross and wanted to see it in person. What a piece of history sitting along side the serenity of the May River.

Worth your time to see and experience the charm of old town Bluffton. We highly recommend spending some time here. Quiet and beautiful. Church is very special and the grounds are very special

We are members of this beautiful, historic church located on the banks of the May River. It is not only a beautiful place to worship, it is like being with family.

During our Travels of the US, Old Towns are a magnet for us, and for many other History-minded Travelers.
A visit to Bluffton is certain to include a visit to The Church of the Cross.
The Church of the Cross provides parking for the many locals and travelers who enjoy the a visit.
The Church of the Cross has a rather unique columbarium.
The Church of the Cross has a Saturday night informal service, a Sunday 8:00AM “aerobics” service with standing and kneeling (which we prefer.)
We always enjoy visiting with The Church of the Cross volunteer’s Docent.
Dum Spiro Spero

Very welcoming and well attended but didn’t feel jam packed in.
A contemporary band and singers played from the balcony in the back, and the words and bible readings in large font projected on front walls both sides of the alter. Service was one hour including communion. Great sermon.
The park surrounding the church is the place to catch their famous sunsets too.

Always a beautiful place to enjoy the May River. I history of Church of the Cross is fascinating and a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas.

There was a free, informal docent tour of the small church - interesting to learn about the history of the church and Bluffton. Nice views along the water. Honey and cookbook for sale, or donations welcome.

Gorgeous old church. Large windows show view of May River. Old Episcopal Church has boxes and old pews. Docents are inside to show people around and answer questions. Still operated as an Anglican Church. Grounds are wonderful.

Much of Bluffton was burned during the Civil War, but this church survived. (It had been built just a few years before the war. A docent is usually available weekdays to describe the history of the building. The church grounds provide a wonderful view of the May River.

I may be biased given that I attend church here and got married there, but the church and grounds are spectacular, with a wonderful "high bluff" view of the May River and Palmetto Bluff beyond. The sanctuary itself is wrought with history and simple elegance befitting a building spared by "the North" when the Town of Bluffton was sacked in 1863. Take a docent tour or just walk the grounds. May be the highlight of your trip.

This pretty old church is worth a stop. It looks to be made of cypress but we aren't sure. The floors are pine and are original I believe. The stained glass windows are a pink hue and very subtle. It has withstood hurricanes, and the Civil War. The grounds are exceptionally pretty as it overlooks the May River and the original dock from many years ago.

Absolutely the most serene location where you can take time for meditation
Location is on the May River

You can buy honey from the bee hives in the front wall of the church. Very quaint old church with beautiful grounds and right on the May River

This historic church is definitely worth a visit. The church is beautiful, but the setting is even more wonderful. The visit really takes you back a few decades!

visit this church and the town in general serves, to those who have eyes to see and brain to think, to understand the drama suffered by the South with the complete destruction put in place by Sherman (the same one that then "solves" the "Indian problem" to the West) only for the benefit of the speculators who then bought an entire country for "four bucks"

This sweet little church sits like stop off in a southern fairy tale. A short walk along the shop-fronted Calhoun street ends in this delightful place to pray as if at the end of the world.

Thanks to Jan for such a wonderful history lesson of not only this beautiful church, but of lovely Bluffton as well.

This is an old but beautiful church right on the May River. The outside grounds are beautiful and the inside of the church is beautiful. Take the trip all the way down Calhoun. Walk it or drive it. So Peaceful

Lovely historic church located in Old Town Bluffton right on the May river. We are new to the are a and are looking for a church to call "home". Besides bring a lively historic church it was a very nice service.
Everyone was pleasant and welcoming. The communion service was very nice, and the sermon was relevant and pertinent to everyday life.
Of course it was air conditioned and comfortable inside with views of the water from the windows.
We will go back again to get a taste for the less traditional service held on Saturday evenings....this may be the one.
If you just want to see the architecture it is a beautiful church as well.

This church is a must see. Serene and well preserved. If you're lucky, you can attend a service there.

Magnificent and historical. Try and take a tour. It is well worth the time for the historical information. The services are beautiful.

If you are traveling to or from Hilton Head and decide to stop in Bluffton (which you should), a visit to the Church of the Cross is worthwhile. Located in a peaceful spot overlooking the May River, this beautiful building provides a moment of peaceful reflection during your busy travels.

We enjoyed viewing this beautiful property! Lovely old building and beautiful foliage and trees! We especially enjoyed watching the sunset on the May River from the church grounds!

Have visited many times with friends and family. Have also attended service there. Lots of history pertaining to this building during the Civil War.

If you go to Old Town Bluffton, make sure you stroll to the end of Calhoun Street and see this beautiful antique church. You can walk on the grounds and see the stunning views of the May River, and sometimes the church is open with a docent available to give you information on the historic church.

This is a hidden gem, unfortunately the inside is locked only open for church service, but this neo gothic wooden church is a marvel very well kept and the surrounding gardens remind of merry old England in a warm place with people on jet ski down on the estuary

Beautiful place to see. Public welcome, great public dock to bring a chair and watch the sunset. Love this town

Go for it - you will be glad you made the effort - OR drive down the street, park and just mosey around the grounds.

Was last minute decision to go into the church with out of town guests, and was surprised at the guide's knowledge. We thoroughly enjoyed going and they also sell local honey too (Holy Honey)!

Have lived in this area 40 years and visited this church numerous times. It's a wonderful place for visitors to enjoy and learn. Frequently there are very informed docents who give guided tours. A must see!!

A must see in downtown Bluffton. Such a serene scene from the Church to the May river. If you want to go inside the church, you must first see their schedule. Otherwise, the view if beautiful and you can walk to downtown and see the arts shops along the way.

Old town Bluffton is a throw back to the 60's with many artist shops and quaint little restaurants. The Church of the Cross sits at the end of main street bordering the May River. My wife and I love this place for its beauty and calming of the spirit. We can sit there for hours watching the boats, dolphins, and people enjoy the serenity of the location. The church itself was having service so we did not go in, but after the service we visited and enjoyed the beauty of its architecture.
A wonderful way to spend a quiet afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of highway 278.

So unique and the history is fascinating. Beautiful view overlooking the river. Nice picture opp. Worth the visit.

This church is perched on a bluff on a river. Many picnic there during the week. Interesting Church. I attended a service here and it is too large a church for me. I was a bit put off by the huge screens with the words to hymns on them...but that is just me. The service was very nice but you have to be comfortable in a big congregation for this church to resonate with you.

this is a beautiful church with lots of traditional church woodwork and decor. they have a full sized grand piano as well as a pipe organ which one rarely sees in modern churches. there are volunteers on duty to tell you about the history of the church and the town of bluffton.

Such a lovely old church in a gorgeous neighborhood. Loved the old church bell. Unfortunately we were not able to go inside that day but just getting to see the historic area was very cool

We attended a Christening in this beautiful old church. The people are very friendly. The church has a wonderful view. Parking is limited, so arrive early.

Go here to see the best view of the river. Check out the historic church and see where they harvest the honey they sell and go inside to see the pews, each with its own entry door.

I would definitely recommend visiting Church of the Cross. It was so beautiful and peaceful. As you walk up to the church you see a glimpse of the Harbor river.

This amazing church is situated on the May River and is beautiful both inside and out. The feeling of peace this church evokes is truly magical and it is worth a visit, regardless of your church affiliation.

This beautiful old church is right on the water. If you go inside you will find old pews and family pews from years ago. A beautiful church in a beautiful setting. A nice wLk from Bluffton city center.

Exceptionally well maintained old church (early 1800's) on beautiful water front setting. Docent was available to share history of the building.

This waterfront landmark is not to be missed if you appreciate beauty and/or history. Even our 12-year-old daughter stood in awe of this gorgeous old church perched by the sea. A very short drive from the heart of Bluffton, and not far from Hilton Head, this is a lovely place to visit and reflect.

If your into history and architecture this is a stop for you very old church and very well maintained.

Without going inside this is a place of respite for your soul. It is beautiful, historic, and timeless. It is the most photogenic spot in town. We love it so much. It is to be respected and loved.

This church has some interesting history and is probably the most photographed site in Bluffton. Definitely worth a visit

We have been going to the Church of the Cross for a little over a year and found it to be warm and welcoming. The pastors are all friendly and make sure they greet all comers. I encourage all to visit.

This is a Fantastic church located in downtown Bluffton. Sherman spared this church from burning. Well worth the visit!

The story of this place is hardly in its period-perfect architecture, or even the beautiful bluff on which it sits, and for which this town is named. This church building and its grounds, while interesting and worth visiting in itself, is really only a small part of the story of this congregation.
This church congregation and its then new Rector twenty some years ago decided to transform itself from a typical old southern "low and lazy" Episcopal Christian social club into the force it is in this community, and across the country today. This vibrant and welcoming Christian community is much larger than just this building, and its associated rectory, church office buildings and the Cross Schools buildings.
One of the fastest-growing christian communities in the Nation, the strength of this Church is felt throughout the town, the diocese, the region and North America.
Stop by to look at the building as a work of art, or stop by a for a service and find yourself caught in a strong current.

On the May River. Historic church with amazing views. Try to time when it is open to visitors because the inside is as interesting as the outside. Built in 1857 in funky "Bluffton is a state of mind," I take all my visitors to see its uniqueness. Worth a stop.

The man telling us about this beautiful church Was a very informative! The history of the church and how it was sparred from the fire and turned in a stables !

Lovely old church located right on the May river. Walk the grounds and view the river and marsh expanse.Lovely memorial garden

Unfortunately closed when we pulled up in the late afternoon but gorgeous old wooden church with immaculate grounds located by the river.

When friends come to visit, we always like taking them to see this historic church along the May River. Go just before sunset for the best views.

One of the most gorgeous places in Bluffton. Lots of history and charm... perfect place for a few photos and personal reflection.

A great stop if you're taking a tour of Old Town Bluffton. A very picturesque water-view from the church grounds!

We enjoyed our visit and had a good tour with a docent that provided a lot of details that added greatly to our understanding of the building and history.

If you're ever in old town Bluffton, which in itself is a real treat, make sure to take in the Church of the Cross. One of it's member's are usually there to share it's history and the role it played during the Civil War. And it's setting on the banks of the May River takes on a beautiful and serene view.

Wonderful that a town and a congregation have worked to keep a historic building for all future generations to admire. I only wish we could have visited the inside.

We live in Bluffton, and we have a lot of company , we always take them there. Everyone thinks it is just beautiful , both the church and the view of the May river

The Church is a wonderful symbol of the area, do not expect grandiosity, expect uniqueness, also a great location in the bluff. If you coordinate your trip with one of the boat trips to see the may river, if you are lucky enough there is a wonderful lady who is a marine biologist that knows the area like no other,, also stop at the Bluffton Oyster factory you will not regret the stops!

Gorgeous church by the river. We were there when the azaleas were blooming on a beautiful day. Families sitting on the rivers edge enjoying the peacefulness. Wish we could have seen the inside of the church. Beautiful park across the street. Truly a haven.

This Anglican Church sits right on the May River. Pretty outside but beautiful inside. Old style pew boxes and wonderful windows. Service is pretty high. They don't mind visitors but service is serious. Incredible water views of the May River

Pretty Protestant church on the best lot in Bluffton. The outside is charming and the inside is beautiful. The pink coral color of the windows and interior plaster cast a warm light that makes even the ugliest bride look good.

A very special place for fellowship with the Lord. Father Owens sermons are pure words of wisdom. Praise the Lord! Having grown up in the UK, I appreciate the traditional Sunday Service. The modern one is nice too.

Brought visitor here for the tour. Beautiful old church. Worth the visit. My Neighbors worship here and really enjoy the parish.

Loved this historic church and the facts the docent shared. Felt like a step back in time. The grounds looking over the May River are so beautiful.

Brilliant sermons, wonderful congregation and they focus on spirituality. Bible driven.
Believe in the Lord with all of your heart!

How have I missed this gem on previous trips? Makes me want to get married again and have a destination wedding. Simply gorgeous and steps from water/dock.

It is ild and beautiful and you feel like you are in the presence of God. Spend some time inside, especially a sunny day when the windows shimmer and reflect on your life. Very moving.

Thought everyone was very welcoming. We were greeted as we walked in. Plenty of seating. Pastor gave a great sermon. Will defininitely be back. Parking was substantial.

I had seen so many pictures of this church online, I knew I had to see it in person during our trip to HH and visit to Bluffton this year. It did not disappoint! It is in Old Town Bluffton, so even the walk down the street to get to the church is lovely, with old southern-charm homes lining the street. We did not go inside (though it was open with a docent on-site) but really enjoyed seeing the building and site it's on.

Beautiful, old Church that sits right on the May River in Bluffton. Provides lovely views from it’s serene location as well as a peaceful & quiet environment. It is worth the stop to learn about this little piece of history.

We weren’t allowed inside because it was after hours. The church and the grounds are in excellent condition and were really neat to walk around.

Such a beautiful and serene atmosphere. All of God's creation shinning through. My son and daughter n law just moved tobtge area and we were out and about in old town looking at the beautiful history of this quaint little town.

Will try to get you saved, even at a family funeral or Christmas Eve service. I would be in church if I wasn't already on my way to heaven, hand in hand with Jesus Christ. Exclusive, not inclusive!

If you like visiting old southern churches and historical architecture, this is your stop.
Landscape and the views are just stunning.
Historical enthusiasts will enjoy this quick stop and the way to Hilton Head Island

Interesting construction and size. Get a docent to give you a tour. Various stories on why it was spared the union torch while most of the town was burnt. Ask about the honey bees that live in the walls. Sits on a beautiful bluff over the river

This church is truly breathtaking- inside, outside and all around! It's definitely worth visiting. We got lucky enough to go inside but even the outside and surrounding area along the river is worth seeing. I would definitely recommend checking it out and I plan to return before my trip ends.

Wonderfully preserved church from our past, built about 1854, and survived through the Civil War (or War of Northern Aggression, if you prefer). Docent (guide) was very helpful and informative

We had time before the tour of the Heyward House was scheduled to begin. We heard about the Church of the Cross that housed bee hives and marketed the honey. The church was also very close to the Heyward House. There was a parishioner there that gave us a great tour of the church and grounds, answering our questions and providing a history of the church and the area. The church is simple in design but very picturesque on the banks of the river, with well maintained and beautiful grounds.

Visiting the Hilton Head area recently we came across this old wooden church right on the bay in Bluffton S.C. The structure was awesome both inside and out. The Docent on duty was very friendly and knowledgeable and had some great stories about the history. If you get a chance to visit be sure to ask about the Church bell. No fees but if you want to make a small donation they appreciate it.

What a beautiful sanctuary, inside and out! There's a sweet and informative docent inside who has lived in Bluffton his whole life. Definitely worth a visit, and a small monetary donation (not required).

The church and grounds are so welcoming and they give you a sense of tranquility. So peaceful. The workmanship of the church itself is amazing. Just gorgeous. There was a friendly, kind gentlemen there who gave us the history of the church. Definitely a must see to appreciate and feel the tranquility.

Something about this church sent a chill up my spine. The pews, the organ, the location on May River, the hand-sewn altar kneelers...a step back to a simpler time. Significant Saturday worship time at 5:28!

So beautiful we wanted to get married there. Sadly, we have only gone to funeral/memorial services there. Wonderful experiences. We go past it often when we have visitors.

A must see when visiting Bluffton SC. This old church is very unusual. You can attend services. It is located on the bank of the May River. It is a peaceful place to sit on the lawn by the river.

A stunning church that is totally different than many vintage churches! Wood with colorful trim, stunning doors and angles and on a beautiful property on the water. Make sure to stop by when in town. Easy parking near the church.

We were just walking around on a beautiful day and stumbled into this lovely little church. The volunteer inside was very friendly and we bought a cute ornament to take home with us.

We've visited as a sight seer (highly recommend) and for services. This is a don't miss for Bluffton History buffs.

We have visited so many churches around the world that they have to be of historical significance or be very unique to tempt us anymore. This Church is both.
We were here a few years back. We had a friend with us on this trip so took her there to see this beautiful building. I sat in the grounds, watched the river and enjoyed the sun while the ladies did the tour I did on the previous visit.
Our friend's "Wow, that's beautiful" when we first pulled up and her accolades when she emerged from the tour made the detour worthwhile.

Beautiful location, great drinks and very kind staff. It was raining and we found a great solution to spend a few hours in the company of a great cocktail

A very knowledgeable docent will place you right into the past present and future of this beautiful church. The grounds are so peaceful and the church will be sure to touch you in a very special way.

This church is definitely worth checking out, for it’s history as well as seeing the old original woodwork.

This is an absolutely beautiful historic church. The building is an architectural treasure and has a peaceful ambiance about it. The staff were friendly and accommodating, allowing me to enjoy a self guided tour and sit as long as I wished in the sanctuary. There was no charge (although donations are certainly appreciated).

Beautiful old church right on the river in downtown Bluffton. They sell local honey, delicious. The folks who are there to talk about the church are knowledgeable and so friendly

Just ok. They really should add a historical marker. Make a point to walk down to the water. Beautiful view.

beautiful church and setting. Right on the water so nice. Our family has had photo done here because of the gorgeous view.

Old town Bluffton gem. Very picturesque setting on the May River. Throwback to the days of old Bluffton.

You just have to see this to believe there is still a perfect place! Landscape, setting, pipe organ, pews, and I could go on and on about this church. Please take a short walk in Bluffton to see this church, it is opened during the week for visitors.

An absolute beautiful church that sits on the May river. The views are breath taking. The church's Gothic architecture is very cool. The lawn and grounds are perfectly manicured. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

This beautiful, historical church is worth the visit. We were not able to go inside, but the grounds & architecture were stunning. A panoramic view of the May River from its bluff is amazing and it is a peaceful place to meditate.

We found his to be a great little visit. The church volunteer was kind, passionate, and knowledgeable about her church. This is a great place for history.

Church of the Cross overlooking the May River is a must when visiting Bluffton. The setting is gorgeous.

The Church of the Cross was beautiful as was the whole town. We took a carriage ride and got some of the history as well as looked at the historic houses. It was a short drive from Hilton Head and well worth it!

I enjoyed this friendly Church so much I joined! Historic preservation and conservation of the time Views are best!

This is the main historic church of Bluffton. it was built in the middle of 19th century. It is part of Anglican Diocese of South Carolina. During our prior visit we were lucky to participate in a guided tour where the knowledgeable volunteers narrated the visit. This time the church was closed but accessible exteriorly. The location of this temple is truly beautiful on May River's bluff - in the park setting, on the water. The grounds are well kept. It is a part of the historic tour of Old Town Bluffton.

This is a beautiful old church. We loved hearing the history from someone who was very knowledgeable. The organ pipes were beautiful.
The grounds we beautiful also. Worth the stop if to walk the grounds.

Any trip to the Hilton Head/Bluffton area warrant time set aside to see this beautiful old church overlooking the ocean. Having seen churches all over the world this wood structure rivals any with its unique style and location.

This is one of the most beautiful settings you can imagine! Church of the Cross sits on the banks of the May River where you may see dolphins swim by. It is a place of serenity and incredible scenery. Also, the church is humble, historic and magnificent. Truly a must see!

Beautiful old wooden church spared by the war. Interior stained glass was all pink. Sun shining through gave the interior a pretty pink hue. Worth visiting.

Beautiful church which still operates in Old Town Bluffton. Open to the public today furing Mayfest. The docents give you a history. Church is very well maintained.

Stumbled upon this gorgeous church while walking in the area. It is simply stunning and such a beautiful landmark. Right on the water, so serene.

Beautiful church but you can’t go inside It’s near the water and has park nearby across the street is an old home being restored

Great place to have a low-key independent tour of the church and grounds. Free of charge with no pressure to follow a script or see anything in particular. Go in the evening and catch a casual seat on the grounds at sundown for an unforgettable sunset.

Pretty Church in a gorgeous setting overlooking the May river. Definitely worth a visit.
They decorate the church with fresh flowers at Easter. I come here to relax often.

This landmark Church should absolutely be on your list to see when visiting the Hilton Head area. Located in Historical Old Town Bluffton on the banks of the May River, it has Docents available for tours of the building and grounds.

A very historic old church on the bank of the May River. Beautifully restored and maintained and a very interesting part of our American history. If visiting Old Town Bluffton you shouldn’t miss a visit

Beautiful historic church still active and used for many occasions. Right at the end of Calhoun St. with it many festivals and farmers market in the spring to fall timeframe.

The church is beautiful and the guided tour was wonderful. The setting on the bluff is gorgeous. A must see when in Bluffton!

This old church is set along the May river. I’ve never seen a church with an exterior like this. Unique and beautiful

A true highlight of our visit to Bluffton. The docent provided a history of the church and how it survived when the union army burned most of the town of Bluffton.

This church has withstood so much history. It is beautifully kept and has a wonderful location near the water. Check out the hoof prints in the floors from Union solder's horses during the civil war.

I discovered Old Town Bluffton by mistake last year and now it is a stop every time I'm in Hilton Head. One of the highlights is certainly The Church of the Cross. On my last visit, I took a friend that loves history, and we were fortunate enough to find a Docent on duty. He was so informative and friendly, and was able to answer every single question. We even bought some Holy Honey, which was heavenly!

Nice to visit with history . Very friendly to all religions . A relaxing walk around by yourselves .

This place is stunning. Much historical background. Many great photo ops. Don’t go to Bluffton without going here. Make it near sunset and you won’t be sorry

The Union troops knew this place was special when they spared the church from fire during the Civil War. From the beautiful outside and grounds to the spectacular inside, this is a place worth spending time in. Go when there is a docent present and embrace the history of this holy place. Go near sunset and witness one of the best sunsets in the area. And be sure to get some Holy Honey!

First it was FREE!! But this beautiful gothic church situated on the May River is just perfectly peaceful. The view of the river is stunning. The architecture of the church is incredible.

Lovely Church over looking the May river, the view is beautiful and well worth driving to Old Bluffton. It is also great place to joy a picnic.

Guide gave an informative talk about the history of the church and the area. Also sold Holy Honey and had a story to tell about its origin.

Any time we have out of town guests who are here for the first time, we always take them to visit this historic church. It is generally open to the public and in a beautiful setting on the bluff overlooking the May River. It is especially beautiful in the spring when the azaleas are blooming.

This is a must see in Bluffton. My most favorite time to go down to church of the cross is near Sunset be able to see the beautiful church in the historic town and watch the sun go down over the May River the pictures are breathless all ages families and bring your camera

What a stunning historical church and gardens The Church of the Cross is. We were walking to see the Bluffton Public Boat Dock and gorgeous May River and were so happy to walk through the church’s gardens. We cannot wait to go back in Spring to see the church gardens when the Camilla and Azaleas are in bloom. Beautiful peaceful place. Built in late 1800s!

This is a beautiful old church located on the May River. It is constructed of wood from long leaf pines. Two docents were present to welcome visitors and share the
history of the church. The surrounding landscape is well manicured and provides
a picturesque view of the river.

Christmas Eve service was lovely. Very welcoming congregation and fellowship was awesome. My family and I will definitely attend again in the near future

The church is beautifully positioned near the water, with a lovely courtyard and organized interior. Worth a visit and quick self-guided tour inside and out.

OK - been going to HHI and Bluffton for years. It was only when I read a review on this site did I even KNOW to find and go to this site. It was so worth it. The grounds are immaculate, overlooking the water (May River), large trees (for the most part, Hurricane Matthew left them unscathed). Upon entering the church, I felt a holiness far removed from commercialism (they sell cookbooks and other items) - the pews are unique in that at the end of each, there is a door to enter. The stained glass rivals anything you have seen anywhere. The cross is calling, and knowing. Whether you stay for a few minutes, or longer, you will leave with a different perspective. I wish we'd had time to attend a service there. My only regret.

We were advised to go see this Historical Church, built before the Civil War. It is still an active church. We walked there while we were visiting the Farmers Market. The church was CLOSED! We were told it was always open. Very disappointed to say the least.

Stopped by to see this church and a lovely docent provided a lot of history. Certainly a gem to be preserved and sounds like a thriving current congregation

If you love studying history, this church has years of history. Our docent was very familiar with the history of this church and he presented it so well. It's amazing how a wooden structure like this can survive so many years. Be sure to buy the Holy Honey and if no one explains why it is holy, be sure to ask. Take a walk over to the May River and look down the river - and one can almost sense the boat travel that took place up and down the river hundreds of years ago.

This church sits at the end of a quaint little road, on the water, in the historic and charming town of Bluffton. Our first impression was just to be awestruck by the beautiful grounds and historic building that we found out is an active church doing God's work on a grand scale. We met a wonderful member of the congregation that gave us a wonderful tour and educated us on the church's history.
Interesting fact the church is home to several bee colonies and rather than have them destroyed or relocated they coexist and actually sell the honey. We bought 2 jars.

I have been to visit this historic church several times, as a tourist years ago, and now bringing my own outof town family to visit with me as a local escort. The church is staffed by knowledgeable volunteers who are willing to answer questions, tell stories, point out landmarks, and offer suggestions for other local sites and eats. Highly recommend - you can spend 15 minutes, or hours. Ask the tour guide about the honey - great story!

I am a member of The Church of the Cross so I am a little bias, but it is a beautiful place in a beautiful setting right on the May River. For visitors to the Hilton Head, Bluffton area it should not be missed.

The Church of the Cross is a beautiful church with an amazing location. The grounds are perfect for some great pictures. You can get some Holy Honey here as well! They have a bee hive in the building and collect the honey to sell.

Just dropped in to see this historic church that was built before the Civil war and was pleased to find out 1) there was no charge, and 2) a docent was available. We learned lots of interesting anecdotes from him. Visit on a nice day because the grounds, which are right on the river, are beautiful.

This church is gorgeous and most of the original church is preserved. We do wish we could have seen the inside, however it was nice to see the outside as well as the view and all the outside texture. I’d recommend seeing this as well.

I've visited the Church of the Cross many times, and always love the beautiful setting on a small bluff overlooking the May River. There are volunteers inside to tell you about the church itself, and the grounds make for a lovely walk.

Tried twice to see inside but it was locked. The location is very tranquil right on the May River. Def worth a stop!

My husband and friends went to see the Church 2 years ago. So, when we had the opportunity to take my sister and brother it was a must on our list of things to do. We weren't able to enter but they agreed the Church and grounds are beautiful.

Several times a year I take a detour from my usual travel on Rt. 178 between Bluffton and Hilton Head to spend some quite time on the grounds of The Church of the Cross. The view overlooking the water is gorgeous. There are several ancient cedar trees that I like to stretch out beneath. I often like to read there, but I often find myself waking up after a long, peaceful nap. While the inside of the church is quaint and beautiful, I find myself feeling closer to the spiritual world on the beautiful grounds outside of this church.
Just a side note, if you like great desserts, several years ago the parishioners of this church put together a cookbook that is filled with some of the best dessert recipes I have ever tasted. They are anything but lo cal, but they are delicious. If you eat these sweet delights too often you will probably be spending an eternity in the ground at The Church of the Cross. I couldn't think of a better place to be.

You don't even have to go inside the chapel to experience the beauty of the building, its location on the edge of the river to watch a beautiful sunset from the edge of the lawn overlooking the broad expanse of water. No matter what your faith The Church of the Cross is a spot to enjoy, reflect and contemplate life. And it's all just a short stroll down from the bustling activity of Calhoun Street and Old Town Bluffton.

The church is quite old, but beautiful. It sits alongside the May Rover, offering very pretty views and a wonderful breeze. Come on Thirsday afternoon during the Market time to take it all in.

The docent was an excellent tour guide, giving us a colorful history of both the church and the surrounding area. Very interesting and informative. Wonderful tour. Well worth the time to stop and visit. And, it's free!

If you are looking for a natural appearing , historic location, then at the "Church of the Cross" you have found it. We have been here three or four time with various sets of friends. The guide always does a personal tour ( because they are members of the church). The history of the church dates back to the Revolutionary War and it has a very natural appearance with a beautiful view of the May river. One unique feature is the bees nest in the belfry ( we can attest to these as we have seen them in the summer and seen the frozen ones in the winter). The church harvests the honey and sells it , which is unique. Services are held here on Sunday.
bill

This really is a great place. I feel like each sentence I write should contain the word "wonderful". It's set on a bluff overlooking the River. The building is constructed of wood that's wonderfully weathered. The grounds are well kept. The interior has a peaceful, serene feel. It's truly one of the nicest Churches I've seen. Props to our docent Charles. He made our visit that much more enjoyable

We did not go into the church as it was evening but it sits in such a gorgeous spot especially when the sun is setting. Someone told us it is the oldest church in the US but I am not sure if that is true. At night it is well lit and you just want to stand there and remark at how perfect the symmetry is .

This church was original built in 1851. A new church building began construction in 1854, and completed in 1857. The cost of this second construction was $5000. 00.
The first service in the new church was held 17 July 1857.
Federal troops in 1863 spared the Church of the Cross during the burning of Bluffton. The bell tower was added in 1878, and has a tone not often heard in modern bells. The bell strikes 1 time for each year of the life of a person at a funeral conducted at the Church of the Cross.
The interior of the Church is a museum in its own right. The wood pews in this church are rarely seen elsewhere. The grand piano and organ crown this one of a kind church! A tour of the church is imperative by a friendly, and informative docent. Do NOT miss the opportunity to see the Church of the Cross in Bluffton, S.C.

One of Bluffton's cherished landmarks. No only a spectacular building but regular services continue on Saturday
evenings and Sunday mornings. It is located overlooking the May River which is also another gem in our area. Both
of these treasures well worth seeing.

We came across this beautiful church on a stroll through Bluffton. The character and history of the church are interesting. The people inside were very informative. But most of all the woodwork of the old church, the pipe organ and colors inside were just beautiful.

During our trip to South Carolina we travelled out to Blufton for a wander and lunch. Very pleased and surprised to find a beautiful old wooden church. Not able on this occasion to see inside but a wander round the grounds which run along side the Blufton river is worth while.

Beautiful old Church right on May River in Old Towne Bluffton. Bring your camera & walk the grounds. It's a small church. You can also go inside. There is a small trail from the parking area at the church that leads to a public dock thats located right on May River.
Beautiful setting over the May River
This is one of the oldest churches with beautiful wood floors, benches and stained glass. It gives one the feeing you are visiting a very special place. Love to go in and just sit in the stillness. If you are in the Bluffton area, it's a definite place to put on your to go list.
