We took the free tour of the building offered through the Detroit store in the lobby area. We learned a lot about the buildings history and got to see some amazing views of Detroit from the top floor.

A Gorgeous Deco building in downtown Detroit.
Beautifully preserved, a fabulous lobby that shows you how prosperousDetroit must have been in the early 20th century.
Make sure to visit the Pure Detroit shop to get some great homemade home grown local products to take home 🏡.

Stumbled inside this building but did not expect to be absolutely blow away at its ornate decor! The Guardian is definitely worth popping into for a few minutes, and if you have time to spare read the Wikipedia article about it's history while you're inside-- it explains the meaning behind most of the art!

By Ldruks |

This is my favorite building in Detroit! It’s colorful Art Deco architecture is breathtaking. I am always taken by the incredible tile work. There are occasional tours of the building available which are very worth it. There is a lot of history in this gem.

By DDebbyy_Bo |

Every morning I come here to walk around this wonderful place and grab a brioche. For tourists this is the perfect place to walk and grab something to eat, absolutely to visit!

By ManchesterMarc |

I'm not sure if we just had ane excellent tour guide but this trip should be on every persons itinery in Detroit. The building is impressive on the outside but stunning on the inside. The guide had first class knowledge and very professional, taking the time to answer lots of questions as well as making the whole experience interesting and memorable.

By juliesew |

This is an incredible tour. We learned so much from Davey of Detroit Food and City Tours while gazing at the absolutely gorgeous building. No expense was spared in its design. Definitely put this on your list when visiting Detroit!

By Lisa N |

Art deco at its best. History is seen through the mural, quality material and beautiful results. Find out about the mural before you go to get the most of this visit.

By zoes101 |

If you're in downtown Detroit, definitely plan on stopping in this building - it's amazing. Pure Detroit offers free tours of it on the weekend from their shop inside the building, and it's worth doing one of those.

By jbjo13 |

I just dropped by and walked inside the building. The foyer area is spectacular and worth a look. I didn’t do a tour and couldn’t see any signage suggesting one was possible. There is an eating area inside the foyer so you can sit and make the most of the incredible ceilings. Pity that someone approved a walkway connecting the exterior of this building with the one next door - it has really spoiled the facade.

By Shitake |

Great Architecture right in the heart of Detroit. Photographer friendly. Go when the bank is closed to avoid crowds and a lot of people. We went early Sunday morning and it was great.

By FamilyOrganizer523 |

If you plan it right, Pure Detroit offers tours of the building free of charge. It was a quick stop for us, but I’m glad we went. There’s a coffee shop and seating inside if you want a little something to drink while you look around.

By peanutsNewYork |

Try to take a walking tour in Detroit and you can be sure this will be one of the stops on the tour. You need to check out the ceiling of this place and the architecture in general.

By Carlos T |

This is the first time visiting this building and the over experience was good. The building inside is beautiful. They offer free tours inside the building. However, our tour guide was not very good! He could not be still and it was a distraction! He was suppose to take us to the six floor but lost or misplaced the key to the elevator. After waiting twenty minutes we left without seeing the rest of the building.

By Dunc1971 |

You must see this building if you're visiting Detroit. The outside is visually appealing, but it's the inside that took my breath away. It's free to enter. Colourful ceilings and breathtaking art deco design. Every inch of space is wonderfully presented. Even if you just put your head in for 5 minutes, it's worth it.

The Guardian Building is Magnificent. A truly Extraordinary Beauty.. New York City has The Chrysler Building, Detroit has The Guardian Building.
A Detroit Must Visit.

By Judy S |

This is a beautiful building on the inside and outside. We were only allowed to wander on the first floor, but it was worth it. The receptionists gave us an information paper about the building and a postcard of it. We really appreciated that.

By Heather C |

Couldn’t go on “the tour” we heard about (not like a walk-in, buy tix kinda thing). Parking across street is $4 for 20minutes, $8 for 40min—keep that in mind. Good for a coffee—shop inside building and sitting area was perfect to check out the building. Lady at desk was extremely sweet & helpful (gave us a little flyer with some info about building). Building is really cool (don’t judge it by outside, trust me).

Learned of the Guardian Bldg tour from PBS's UTR ( Under the radar ) show. Lived up to all the praise from the television show. First it's FREE, second it's led by a knowledgeable docent, and third it's completed in 90 minutes. You'll learn the history of this 90 year old architectural gem located in the financial district of downtown Detroit. Reservations not necessary; sign up at the gift shop & enjoy. Information at Pure Detroit website. Parking nearby in ramps or street.

By Arty_mom |

The Guardian Building is a remnant of the golden age of Detroit. The Art Deco interior make this gem one of the most beautiful buildings in the city- all the fancy gold on the ceilings and balcony is breathtaking. This is a must see for any visitor to Detroit! Once in a while there are free yours, otherwise you may walk in and see the main floor 7 days a week.

By auditor_g-s |

This is an amazing building in down town Detroit, with great view over the city from the top. Make sure you book your tour with Pure Detroit so that you learn more about this hidden gem. Our guide was phenomenal, very patient and shared a lot about Detroit history on a very cold day when we stayed most of the time indoors. Thank you!

By Glenn S |

Very interesting design and interior finishes. If you are in the downtown core, definitely take a few minutes to explore the lobby. Very unusual décor and interesting shops.

By product-of-canada |

We came upon a free tour going on at this building, quite by accident, on our way to a Tigers game. We had lots of time, so we joined the tour.

The tour was surprisingly detailed and interesting. The tour takes you outside, in the lobby, and up to the top.

Sometimes you need to be a tourist in your own neighbourhood!

By JKorW |

A group from Wixom took the Tour Detroit tour of this landmark art deco building once known as the Cathedral of Finance earlier this week. So grateful this National Historic Landmark wasn't allowed to decay like some of Detroit's other beautiful buildings. From the 32nd floor views to the Promenade level mural to the vaults which went from housing money to feeding locals as the Aztec Cafe, this tour is worth every penny & every step. Enjoy!

By markjholloway |

We visited the lobby and the retail area off the lobby.

Beautiful colors, design and tiles.

Friendly lobby security guards as well

A lovely place to spend an hour.

By Andrew T |

This building is well worth a visit. The foyer is stunning, I spent at least half an hour looking around.

This is nothing like the bland modern architecture you see nowadays, incredibly detailed and visually stunning. You will not be disappointed

By Diane B |

This is a gorgeous building both inside and outside. Make sure you take the time to go inside. A must see. When we were there, we saw a schedule that noted different food vendors that sold lunch inside on Mondays and Wednesdays. We were there on a Wednesday and wished we hadn't just eaten, There were several different food vendors and the food looked and smelled incredible. There were tables inside to sit at and eat. There were also couches/seats to sit on and rest and just enjoy the view. The ceiling and the naves are incredible.

By Suzan J |

Without doubt the most gorgeous commercial building in the world, built in a time when money was NO object.....and it shows. Sundays the doors are open but you really can't get a feel for things so make sure you visit on the other days. Great little coffee shop in the lobby where you can admire the lobbies beauty. Also a "pure Michigan" store selling locally manufactured goods. Don't miss this building on your vist to Detroit!

By Marta P |

One of the most impressive buildings we have ever seen. We had a chance to take a free tour guided by a local guide (ask in the souvenir shop in the main hall of the building). We learned about the history of the building and its current status. We also had a chance to see the vaults and the magnificent view of Detroit from its 32nd floor. Both the adults and kids loved it! A big "thank you" to the Guide who showed us around.

By Mary S |

It's amazing with the art deco vibes! It's seriously so beautiful and a short walk from Campus Martius, across the street from the Detroit river which separates Canada from the US. And near the Joe Lewis fist and the Spirit of Detroit. It's right there so you might as well pop in!

By samanthabL5582SQ |

The Guardian Building is one of Detroit's most beautiful buildings. I loved going inside to see the huge Michigan mural as well as the ceilings. I love how there are Native American themes throught the building.

By Poemkat |

If you love architecture, you will love the Guardian Building, both inside and out. Be sure to check out the little shop, too.

By Debbi B |

This is actually now the inside of a bank and just beautiful. Part of a walking tour I was on. It is amazing how the new was merged with the old to create something so beautiful in these buildings.

By karbety |

The history behind this building. The Tile work. The artistry. How could you not love this. I learned the ceilings are painted canvas with horse hair behind them, to limit the acoustics for banking.

By FussyGrl |

The Guardian Building has so many architectural features in one place -- tile work, murals, painted ceilings, Tiffany clocks, stained glass windows. You can give yourself a self-guided tour (just meander through the lobby and "shopping" wing, or take a free tour offered by Pure Detroit on Saturday and Sunday. We took a tour after we happened to stop by the building the day earlier, and it was a terrific tour. Great information that helped understand the beauty of the building.

By 1mo-traveler |

The stained glass is worth the trip here. The Aztec artwork is good too; however, I believe the better building to view in Detroit is the Fisher building, built, about the same time.

By Bruce P |

Amazing tour by Pure Detroit staff of a beautiful architectual gem in downtown Detroit.
Our guide not only gave us the facts about the building but about the era it was built and what was going on in Detroit in the late 1920's when so many of the "skyscrapers" were being built. Well worth your time to see the building and hear the history.

By MinnTraveler89 |

Very cool architecture, did a quick walk thru the lobby as it is a functional office building

A few retail shops in the 2nd floor lobby area.

By pkmcallen |

THis building is a standing work of art, for those who love art deco this is nervana, the workmanship is superb .its a work of art both inside and out

By tommyboy48331 |

After a Detroit Tigers game, a friend and I dropped into the building for a quick view. First of all the guard was welcoming and offered us a flyer which highlighted the obvious and not so attractions in this building. T

This building shows the magnificence that Old Detroit in the early 1900's that was commonplace. A Grand banking hall that is reminiscent of the great old buildings of yesterday is just one of the things you should not miss.

If you have heard that Detroit is terrible, this building will tell you that this is not true. While Detroit is coming back, this structure will tell you that some of the greatness never left. Don't miss it on your next trip to Detroit.

By Michael C |

Whilst in the D chckout Guardian. Its a trmrndous showplace of art deco 20s stile mosaics many i believe from detroits reknowned and histric Pewabic factory, which can also be toured if so desired
GUARDIAN has coffee banking and food s well

By lotsohobbies |

Definitely go in and see the lobby if you are in downtown Detroit. I walked in and stood and gawked for about 5 minutes. The security guard didn’t bat an eye. I have traveled many places and this is unlike anything I have seen. The pictures will give you an idea of what to expect but actually being there is breathtaking.

By Pesce23 |

Our tour guide was intelligent and full of interesting information regarding the building and surrounding area.

By Jonathan |

The lobby and arcade of this fantastic art deco building is open to the public free of charge - great place for a coffee in beautiful surroundings. Right at the heart of Detroit's art deco quarter. Be sure to pick up the leaflet explaining the history from the building reception.

By 355zaibam |

We were unable to join a tour of the building but visited the lobby on our own. It is a beautiful example of art deco architecture with a unique twist. It is well-worth a visit.

By Linda D |

This historical building is unlike any. It has beautiful and colorful tiles in Art Deco design ceiling to floor. There is an area where you can enjoy a coffee and then stop into the Pure Detroit shop. There are tours of the building offered by Pure Detroit also. I will want to take the tour when I visit again and enjoy this amazing piece of Detroit history.

By Sarah V |

My husband and I went on a tour of the Guardian Building and although we went for free, it we had to pay, it would be well worth it. Paul was a great tour guide and really knew his stuff. On average, the tour last one hour. You do go outside to see the structure of the building, but only for 5 to 10 minutes. Just be prepared given the weather that day. You get to see the executive board room on the 6th floor and you go to the 39th floor to see great views of the city as well as a room that was used for a dining hall. The best part of the whole tour was going into the basement to see the vaults. There was about 1 flight of stairs to get to the basement and a half flight of stairs to get up and down to the promenade, where you start. You do take the elevators up to the 6th and 39th floors. Paul did warn us that our ears might pop going up to the 39th floor and mine did! This tour would be great for anyone. We live in the metro area all of our lives and never knew of this treasure. It would also be great for kids, families, couples etc. I am not sure about older folks or strollers, but you should call and ask. Don't go to the Guardian Building website to book, you won't find it there. You need to book through City Tour Detroit.

By LookingForFamilyFun |

If you're in Detroit, this is a definite must see! The outside of the building is interesting, but the inside is quite amazing, especially for the middle of a city like Detroit. It's easy to just step in and walk through the lobby and experience this blast from the past...even during covid you could still see the main atrium, although you couldn't walk around in it...an opportunity for people-free photos.

By slartymiec |

A very oppulent and beautiful temple to money! this is an achitectural beaty full of lovely design features and

By nriemen |

This was included in our walking tour and Bob our guide had great info. If you love colorful murals and design, the inside is something you must see while in Detroit.

By Jeff K |

Beautiful Art Deco building in the heart of Detroit. The grandeur is amazing, but we actually liked it best when we could spot the tiny details of excellence, like he lamps and stained glass at the elevators.

By 4luvely1 |

Yesterday I had the fine opportunity to be toured through the Guardian Building. It was very informative and tastefully Done. Our guide was humorous, thorough and entertaining. The specifics of the building was unimaginable. The colors are amazing and to learn of the “why’s” associated gave a deeper sense of appreciation! This a must see for anyone visiting or like me..born and raised in Detroit!

By 99KimsWhims |

Discovered the Guardian Building on a pub tour. A few years later, we took a free tour with Pure Detroit. Do not miss this tour. It is fabulous and the building has amazing architectural detail.

By Christine G |

The building is absolutely stunning!! It is an architecturally gorgeous property, inside and out. You really need a tour guide to explain all of the architectural features. I cannot begin to describe how amazing it is. If you love architecture, design, and history, you will appreciate and enjoy it.

By no1norm |

Prime example of Detroit architecture at its' automotive zenith. I get to do my banking in the Great Hall - what a privilege.

By Cheryl G |

Really beautiful building. Stopped in by chance, had no idea it would be so beautiful inside. Won't take long for anyone to see.

By Brian D |

This building is worth a visit while in Detroit. It is absolutely beautiful and offers opportunity for great photos.

By 66dino66 |

Just a quick peek inside the lobby. Beautiful building just a short walk from the river front. Free!

By drasch4100 |

Pure Detroit Tours provides a free guide through this magnificent building. A true tribute to the architectural craftsmanship that cannot be seen today. It is truly the Detroit financial birthplace. When you enter, you a struck immediately by its majesty..Our docent was knowledgeable and friendly.

By Cowboy1953 |

I was staying at the Foundation Hotel down the street from the Guardian Building. I was born and raised in Detroit and lived there for over 60 years and today I discovered I had never visited the Guardian Building. So I took a short tour, this is just a beautiful building. I can't wait to take a longer tour, I hope somebody does a guided tour. I would like to find out more about the building.

By Jayne M |

We had our wedding there. This Venue is absolutely gorgeous! Old Gothic appeal with 4 floors of high ceilings, ornate pillars, stonework and stained glass windows. I felt like I was in an old castle. Our guests were all impressed by this beautifully unique building.

By JXXXR |

I came to The Guardian Building on a Sunday when lots of the shops were closed. The architecture is nice and is worth viewing if you're in the area but there is nothing overly stunning here so probably isn't a must visit.

By Sue S |

What an amazing building!!! Toured with a friend recently and our guide was the same history grad from Wayne State who guided our Fisher tour last May. He is the BEST ambassador the city of Detroit could have. He knows so much of the city’s and each of her buildings’ histories. And he fills each tour with so many interesting tidbits. The Guardian with its Aztec Deco architecture, Tiffany clock, red marble from Tunisia and gorgeous Ezra Winter(artist from Traverse City) murals is a wonderful example of Detroit at its finest. The view from the 32nd floor and the Indian headdress in the lobby were amazing. This is a must see for every Michigander. We toured the Detroit Library and took the Q line downtown for this tour and lunch at the Grand Trunk Pub making this a very memorable day in Detroit.

By LKM |

A visit to the lobby and the hallway only takes a minute. What were they thinking? A mish-mash of Central and Native American motifs makes for an unbelievable decor.

By Anthony T |

Just two steps inTO the Guardian Building will bring an instant understanding that this is not your run-of-the-mill"glass box"skyscraper!! You will agree that the craftsmanship of the"good ole days"was implemented wholeheartedly in the construction of this 495 foot sculpture of the"Roaring Twenties"!! Take your best camera when visiting herein,as you'll be compelled to take plenty of pictures of the magnificent architecture to refer to years afterwards!! This gorgeous towers' architectural splendor even eclipses that of the grand,award-winning Fisher Building a mile or two to the north!! Don't dare neglect to visit the"Pure Detroit"store in the lobby, which'll offer a multitude of dainties(everything from apparel ,books,ink-pens,postcards and refreshments) on the"Motor City". So MANY red bricks were custom ordered and shipped-in to construct this stately tower, that there was assigned an actual NAME for them:"Guardian Red"!!

By LynneS |

Detroit has some incredible art and architecture, and this building is one of the stars. Really beautiful and amazing to learn about how the interior art was done!

By Pmc108 |

This is an amazing building to tour and our guide was very knowledgeable. He was ready to answer questions and shared a lot about the history of the financial district in Detroit.

By Valerie S |

I wasn't sure what to expect when I went here, but wow - this place is amazing. The architectural decoration is like nothing I've ever seen anywhere.

They were running free, hour long tours when I was there and I listened in for a few minutes. The guide was knowledgeable and interesting, and if you can arrange it, I'd recommend trying to register.

By Brooke |

Absolutely loved the architecture and intricate detail this building had. It seemed like no matter where my eyes went, there were details to be seen. Has some gift shops, I believe a coffee or drink shop, and also a bank with a teller line. Very neat to just stop in and see for yourself.

By Josh D |

Wasnt here for a good while but was told about this staple of Detroit history and couldn't resist not at least stepping inside and view the beautiful piece on the walls. They are currently celebrating their 90th year.

By Justin W |

The Guardian Building is a timeless depiction Art Deco design. The creative use of space and materials represents a past era of the Motor Cities greatness. The guardian building is a designated National Historic Landmark.

By MidwestKathM |

Detroit's Guardian Building in the heart of downtown is a stunning red brick Art Deco building that pays homage to its roots as a financial institution in the 1920s and 1930s. Enjoy the lobby with its Rookwood-tiled ceilings, mosaic wall, and sumptuous elevator lobbies. Walk up into the Cathedral of Finance (the original bank lobby) and enjoy the painted ceiling and the Michigan mural on the far wall. As you depart the Griswold Street entrance, be sure to look up over the door for the carved figures and tilework executed by some of Detroit's greatest artists!

By Kathy W |

I went on a tour with Lori. The check-in process was very easy, and the tour started and ended on time. There were about 10 minutes outside to gaze at the structure so be prepared to be dressed for that.
The building is lovely and Lori was a great guide. She shared the history and pointed out many design aspects. We visited the vault which you cannot do without being on a tour. We also rode the elevator to about the 22 floor which gave us wonderful views of the city (again, need to be on a tour for this).
The price of the tour is extremely low ($7) and totally worth it. I'm glad I made the time to do this.

By Flyer32326036296 |

Paul was my tour guide and he was awesome. The place is beautiful and I learned so much about a place I drive past on a daily basis.

By AnnP |

I recently took the Pure Detroit tour of the Guardian Building and loved it! Our guide Joshua was informative and interesting. Would highly recommend this to people interested in architecture and the history of Detroit.

By BrakiWorldTraveler |

Just across the Riverwalk and the Hart Plaza is this beautiful old fashioned skyscraper.
The entrance is around the corner, from a side street. It's a working office edifice and basically you can see only the lobby which is really an amazing work of art with its colorful tiles.
The only thing that annoyed me was the security officer was following me all the time (of my 5 min I was there) asking me if I need something.

By billyboy07 |

Tour was very reasonably priced - adults were $12 each - and it was led by a member of the Detroit Historical Society. Davy was fantastic and extremely informative. Apart from the msin trading floor, we had access to the old vaults in the basement and the old Guardian Union Club on the top 32nd floor. Fantastic views there. Really excellent.

By patlv23 |

With this building it's all about the interior. It was a weekday so visitors only have access to the lobby and atrium. It was very nice though, resembling the interior of a cathedral. Hopefully someday we could come back on the weekend so we could avail of the tour. We noticed workers seemed to be preparing some displays/info about the building. Hopefully this gives weekday visitor a bit more to do instead of just taking pictures without learning anything about the place.

By Mary W |

If you love architecture, this building is worth a visit!
We visited late in the day, so most of the shops were closed. Luckily my sister, who lives in Detroit had taken a formal tour and was able to explain the fascinating history of this building. The interior decoration is modeled after native American designs in an Art Deco style. It's beautiful, much in the way Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is beautiful. There are many restaurants and other interesting building nearby, but we only had time to briefly tour the inside of this one.

By Paul F |

My words fail me to describe this gorgeous building! How lucky the Wayne County staffers are to work here. The colors, the tiles, the floor, the marble, the windows. Truly a glorious cathedral for the financial sector. Buildings like this will never be built again. My sincere thanks to those who refurbished it. Make sure to see it if you are in the downtown, financial district of Detroit.

By 23Pesce |

We took this tour with visiting family members over the Christmas Holiday. Our tour guide was very informative and you can't beat the view of the city from the top floor.

By CDR1857 |

You simply must step into the Guardian building when you're in Detroit. A former bank, the expansive interior is ornate with colorful tiles, paint, and stone work. It's positively stunning. There are some cool shops inside as well.

By Dorothy W |

It's so worth it to visit this building - such a beautiful piece of architectural history that has been immaculately maintained. There are free tours of the building on Sundays. The tour guide Lori is very knowledgable and friendly. Highly recommend!

By Alan Naldrett |

Easily one of the most beloved of the Detroit Icons, the Guardian Building, architect Wirt Rowland, is an art-deco masterpiece. Aztec and other American styles are used and the ground floor has a great gift shop with lots of Michigan items. Check it out!

By beckymulligan |

We were at a restaurant nearby and decided to stop in, after seeing the building on The Amazing Race. It was incredible. Words can’t really describe how beautiful the tiles and architecture are...a definite must see if you are downtown

By Josephine Bites |

If you come to Detroit you have to visit the Guardian building! Even walking into the building can make you feel like you have stepped back in time. Inquire about a tour, perhaps one of the best things you can do to get the real experience.
Check out Pure Detroit, I believe they offer free 30- to an hour tours.
We tipped our guide when we did the same at the Fisher Building where they also offer complimentary tours. Give the guide a little something, It makes their day! So so worth it!

By travel-hawthorne |

Spend even 15 minutes walking around the lobby of this building and you will love it! You can read up on the history, etc. before or after you go. Well worth the stop.

By Fred O. Maples |

I ❤️the inside of this building. They also give tours on certain days through the store, Pure Detroit, that you will find in the lobby. I recommend stopping by this building to take a look at the architecture.

By Geisha514 |

I went to this building on a site tour to see if it would work for one of our events. The artwork and architecture is stunning! If you love architecture than you will love this building. We had a guide that gave us the background of this building and that made it more intriguing!

By JohnJovi |

Beautiful building inside, particularly during the holidays. The architecture of the building, ceilings, lighting, etc... are magnificent.

By chuck k |

This was an outstanding tour and our guide with very enthusiastic and entertaining. The tour covered much too, main hall, downstairs and 33rd floor. You got you rmoney's worth.

By David M |

This is just a beautiful building, if you are interested in history, architecture and building art then you are not going to be disappointed. I enjoy photography and I was captivated during the tour. I also took a ton on photos.
The tour guide was excellent and very knowledgable. The tour was free, but I would have happily paid for it. If I know anyone who is travelling to Detroit I will happily recommend they pay this American classic building a visit.

By Porthos7 |

We didn't get to take the full tour - so a self guided tour was in store for us...
This building... smh... Just simply gorgeous! This is a must see in Detroit! Handicap accessible and you'll need about

By marcain |

The exterior is quite interesting, but obscured by all of the other tall buildings nearby. The interior is amazing. Well worth a pop-in visit only takes as long as you need to see the decorations. Bank of America branch office in the atrium, very nice gift shop. They offer tours of the building ONLY on Sundays (as of Aug 2023), so plan accordingly. Without a tour, it's VERY worth seeing for a short visit. I wasn't there on a Sunday, so can't speak to the tour.

By poltor |

A great gem of Detroit. Full of stunning architecture and history. I enjoyed the free tour by Steve and his colleague. He was friendly, passionate and knowledgeable. The views of the building were cool and the intricate ceiling and wall architecture was beautiful. Highly recommend!

By 4fairfax |

This a “do not miss” Detroit landmark. Just park on the street and open the beautiful Art Deco doors to the lobby. The elevator areas have stunning tile work. Walk up the stairs under the Tiffany clock to see a soaring hall with amazing murals. There is a small Detroit gift shop to the left.

By Sapphron G |

This gorgeous building is a MUST SEE for anyone who values beauty, art, or architecture. We don't build objects as offers to the gods of art anymore, and the Guardian is not to be missed. I will never forget the first time I walked into this building and looked up: the beauty made me weep. I feel so fortunate that I live where I can go see monuments to the best aspects of humanity.

By Nancy D |

This may vie for my second favorite all-time art deco building (don't worry Chrysler, you are still the best!). Built as a bank, and no corners cut. Tours are free at noon, and worth it.

By Craig H |

Just step inside. You'll be amazed. As a Bank of America customer, I had some business at the bank as well, but the lobby staff welcome visitors to take pics--DO IT! Catch the detail in the elevator waiting area and do walk into the banks lobby, which also has a couple of bistro like eateries.

By Liliorel |

Must see building in Detroit ! Interesting history and great colors !! (and great coffeeshop inside !)

By Michelle C |

We were able to attend the last free tour of the guardian bulding. Our guide Lorrie was so informative and patient. She made everyone feel welcomed. This amazing building is so full of history that if you visit Detroit it is a must see! The cost is a mere $6 for a tour and is well worth it!

By AlexeyGerbovoy |

The building is by the waterfront, and if you want to take a full picture of it, the best place is closer to the kinayeoel spirit of Detroit. The architecture is good, the interior decoration is even better!

By Karen H |

If you're every Downtown Detroit PLEASE take 15-20 minutes to drop in and look around. It's totally free and one of the visual highlights of the city.

By M C N |

This building is spectacular. One could have envisioned it as a church with its' artwork. The exterior is a magnet for the eyes and the interior is even more spell-bounding. Sit in the great hall for coffee and be astounded by the acoustics.

By Dennis R |

Pure Detroit does excellent tours of this great monument in the heart of the once famous financial district. No charge but tips are welcomed. Fascinating facts from the vault in the basement to the top floor. Lobby is so impressive when you entered

By bobhrobl |

Wonderful Art Deco building! This has been on my bucket list for a long time and I was not disappointed. The beautiful workmanship is a must see for all Art Deco lovers!

By Madhatr |

A fundraiser we attended provided us with the opportunity to tour the building. What a gem! Particularly the art deco interior design and the vaults on the lower level. The opportunity to view the city from the higher floors was rewarding. Detroit is coming back!

By Darlene D |

A friend recommended a tour of this building. Wow, knock my socks off beautiful! The tour was fantastic and really highlighted the history of the building and the city. The Tiffany clock made me literally drop to my knees (I'm a Deco clock collector). A glimpse into the Golden Age of Detroit and the Roaring 20's. A new restaurant will be going into the basement vault area, so I hope to visit that at a later date.

By ConciergeInNewYork |

I didn't want to see this and my wife talked me into it. Glad she did. You never see these type of buildings anymore (and I live in NYC!). Take a book, grab a seat inside and enjoy a really elegant building with some amazing features. Really beautiful!

By KK78 |

We just stopped in and walked around the first floor to look at the beautiful art deco architecture. Imagine this being your office building!

By Beata Z |

Laurie, our guide had amazing information about this building, she answered all our questions. We were so impressed with her knowledge. Highly recommend Laurie!

This building was so interesting to see. The tour guide gave us some incredible history. At one point, at it’s peak, the bank had 80 tellers a day.

By GENEVIEVE W |

It was just beautiful. I wish there were more stores, but it was just so pretty and it was worth stopping in.

By palisades76 |

What an amazing architectural jewel! We highly recommend taking the free tour offered on the weekend. Our guide was full of interesting information and stories. They request that you sign up online, but a few people just showed up and they were accommodated. Visiting this building was a great addition to our trip to Detroit. And if this isn’t enough for you, tours are also offered at the Fisher Building which is equally beautiful.

This building is a must see if you are exploring downtown. In our case we were giving our new friends who just moved here a tour of downtown. I knew we had to walk in and look at the ceiling. The building is art deco completed in 1927. It has cathedral vaulted ceilings with pewabic tiles. This skyscraper is a national historic landmark. The lower promenade has some nice shops where you can buy some great souvenirs for gifts. This building is a must see if you are into history, architecture or art.

Everytime I come to downtown Detroit I have a wander through this gorgeous 1929 skyscraper. This building is truly a cathedral of commerce. It rises 39 stories in the city's downtown financial core. The exterior is a unique terra cotta color with Mayan Revival accents that carry through to the massive 3 story lobby-all done with an overall Art Deco finish. If you love Deco, this building is a must see!

Once inside check out the riot of colors used in the elevator lobbies & main concourse. Look up to see brilliant tile, glass & stone murals. The State of Michigan one is a particular favorite of mine.

I have visited on Sunday and there seems to be no problem wandering around the entire ground floor. There are a few places to eat as well as a Detroit gift shop. You can even still do some banking here! I would love to see the upper floors but the building is owned and operated by Wayne County, so unless you have government business I'm afraid you can't go up. I do know the local historical society periodically gives tours of this and the nearby and equally stunning Fisher Building. You may want to check that out-my visits never sync up. Enjoy this magnificent building-definitely worth 45 minutes of your day!

Found free 15 min street parking right up one block lots of parking garage near by also ,.really incredible inside lots to see , it also has a bank of America inside really worth the time if unique architecture is your thing did we mention it's free to look.

Hi, I recently relocated to Western Michigan from North Carolina with my Wife, we took the chance to spend a few days in Detroit over Thanksgiving weekend. One of the places to visit in our list was The Guardian Building, I’m glad we did, the architecture is fascinating by itself but after going through we saw a gift shop where we were told about a Guided Tour to the building, it was great, our guide Steve is very knowledgeably and makes the experience very enjoyable. I recommend anyone who wants to know more about the City and enjoys architecture to go, for sure. The tour was free, I believe you can sign in online, but I’ll let you Google the latest information!
Cheers!

Visited this building while on "Detroit's Rise, Fall and Renewal" historic walking tour. This red-brick Art Deco skyscraper is a true architectural gem, beautiful inside and out. Definitely a must-see for history and architecture lovers. The lobby, elevator lobbies, and nave are absolutely stunning. Amazing, colorful tile work, magnificent ceilings, beautiful stained glass. A stunning piece of Detroit's Roaring 20's history.

By Txncraig |

Don’t miss strolling through the lobby of this downtown masterpiece. It’s filled with Pawabic tile, back-lit glass and a stunning map of Michigan.

By Michigancritter |

Wish we had been able to be there for one of the tours of the building. We had to settle for the lobby area and looking through the decorative gates to the rest on the bottom floor. Free tours show much more.

By Jay I |

This is a great place to have a small meeting with a friend or clients over a cup of coffee or a sandwich or two. The decor is amazing, stunning, frozen from a time long gone. You feel like you are in a museum showing the past but it is the present with the past elegantly preserved for today's use.

By Leslie S |

I've never done a formal tour, but a walk through will be pretty overwhelming. The Guardian was built just around the time of the depression (I belive just prior to it) and features exquisite bronze work (look at the elevator doors), breathtaking tile and a really European feel.

By Torte_Sue |

My husband and I make a point of visiting Art Deco buildings and going on Art Deco tours. This one is over the top in color, even gaudy. We preferred the Fisher Building. That said, the Guardian is worth a visit. We liked the bank area (bank still in operation) over the lobby. We were there on a weekday, so no tour was available. We parked in the ramp across the street for $6.

By Yogesh L |

This is a must see building if you are in Downtown. Very impressive and provides a pleasant mood when you are In there.

You can't miss this place if in Detroit.

By The Happy Traveler |

This is an amazing building circa 1928 that’s still gracefully intact. Amazing architecture style outside. Inside the main hall is a beautiful full length wall painted mural including the demographic map areas of Michigan. On each lower side of the mural you’ll see painted depictions of the agricultural and industrial aspects of what Michigan was built from.

The entry atrium has amazing perfectly matched geometric colorful patterns. A must see building done in art deco; beautiful inside and out!

By 1Rahhalatun |

This unique building has quite a story and the guide from Pure Detroit did an excellent job telling it. I took my morning coffee from the building every workday in the 80s, but had never been on a tour. Very interesting architectural design and details. I recommend. That said, no great event transpired here, no famous historical figure spent time here. It is interesting for the architecture and the building's relationship to the history of Detroit.

By CR2700 |

If you're into office buildings and the way things used to be done (right) then this building is worth a stop. We were not able to go up to any floors but the lobby is amazing.

By Barry J |

Unless you have business with the county, you can only get to/see the first floor, but that is enough. this is a stunning building and well worth the visit. There is a bank of America if you need cash, and an OK eatery (you can do better in Detroit)

By laxman78 |

The Guardian Building is a wonder to behold. Exterior and interior show the work of a genius architect and designer. Our tour guide brought it to life—he knew the building and also the context of the era it was built and the other buildings in the area. A must see for any architecture lover

By Irene L |

Definitely worth a few minutes of your day exploring downtown Detroit. Essentially, you are visiting the lobby of the Guardian building with its elevators and stained glass windows and an operating bank branch. We wandered in after business hours, so it was relatively quiet, just a few tourists gawking at the spectacular ceilings covered in intricate mosaics. At the rear of the bank is a fresco reminiscent of Soviet Art: a celebration of the worker and farmer. I didn't realize that this was a thing in the US in the 1920's as well.

By JRJT_Travel |

The Guardian & Fisher Buildings alone make a trip to Detroit worthwhile. Don't miss them!! The lobbies of both are incredible. I was so awed I forgot to take pictures! I wish someone would publish a great book about the Fisher Building (there is one for the Guardian from Wayne University Press). There is plenty of beauty to see in this great American city!

By rmujicar |

The place really stands out as a testimony of the peak of Detroit importance. Take the tour to understand more of the history of the place. Quite interesting

By Susan G |

Just spectacular. Everyone who goes to Detroit needs to see this gorgeous homage to capitalism and Mayan Art Deco style.

By Lenore J |

Beautiful building, great tour! Everywhere you look there is something that catches your eye. The tiles are colorful works of art. The outside of the building is gorgeous too. Parking was easy. The Saturday & Sunday tours are great because there are fewer people if you want to try to get some photos.

By VtTravelerUsa |

We were in Detroit for a wedding and wanted to see a little bit about what Detroit was about, having known about its past better days and heard that it is coming back. We took both the tours offered by Pure Detroit, which are conveniently connected by the new Q line trolley car. The tour of the Guardian Building downtown was the best, as it also takes you outside, pointing out other notable buildings in close proximity. Plus the public areas of the Guardian are just stunning. The area around the Guardian was teaming with people, which was great to see. The Fisher Building was also an impressive building and the tour gives a little insight into the auto industry history in the area, but not much going on there on the weekend. The trolley up Woodward (free until early Sept) was also fun (and it goes right by the art gallery, too). It would be best to start at the Fisher Bldg. as that tour is shorter and gives you more time to make the second tour at the Guardian; we did the reverse and got there a little after the tour started.

By kjps35 |

We took the tour, which is free, of the Guardian Building. The tour guide was an historian who informed us not only of the Guardian Building, but the history of the development of the Detroit Area. I feel most children would be bored.

By Chris Taylor |

This building is absolutely stunning, with far more than meets the eye from the outside. This building offers gorgeous views of the City from the 32nd floor, and offers a spectacular glimpse at Detroit's history.

By Chips2615 |

Pure Detroit tour was very well done - informative and entertaining guide. He shared a lot about the architecture and motivation for the way this was built. Great tour.

By Connector401767 |

I was in town and just stopped in for a visit. The interior arches, wall murals, and clock made it well worth a stop.

By Spoon2012 |

The Guardian building was built to be a bank but looks like a church. Apparently the original owner told the builder to spare no expense, "I want people to think this is a safe place to put their money." The detail and the architecture is really one of a kind. Be sure to walk in and go upstairs to get the full affect.

By Linda F |

Went on the free puredetroit 313 tour and Jacob was our tour guild. The tour was about an hour and was worth every minute. Jacob was very fun and extremely knowledgeable on the history of the Guardian building. It is definitely a must see building. I am definitely going on the tour again and highly recommend it for all. Thank you for sharing the history Jacob. Much appreciated😁

By tropicalrumfan |

If you're in Detroit on a weekend and don't take the free tour of the Guardian Building, you will miss an incredible insight to the heritage of "The D" and the foundations of the city. Not that there aren't other great examples of exceptional architectural genius around Detroit, but you get a feel for how special this town is from the cultural influences explained so well as you tour this building. Did I mention... FREE?

By pogee06 |

Pure Detroit offers another of its unique, free tours of the Guardian Building at selected times weekends (check its website). From first entry to the building one can’t fail to be impressed. The Pure Detroit docents are amazingly knowledgeable about the history of the building, its construction and the materials and decorative/artistic elements intrinsic to the original and surviving structures. If you have any interest in history, architecture, art or the ethos which created, destroyed and is now restoring and recovering this unique structure this is something you should NOT miss. It says as much about the human spirit and the renaissance of downtown Detroit as about a beautiful building.

By Travelme25 |

In just one hour we learned quite a bit about the 1920s architecture and history of Detroit. We spent time inside and outside of the Guardian building and also learned about a few buildings nearby. The Guardian is well preserved (thank you Wayne County), the design and craftsmanship are exquisite. Jacob was a fantastic tour guide. Don't miss this free tour!

By Mei |

The building exterior only hints at how elaborate the detailing is on the interior. Absolutely stunning! Definitely walk in if you get the chance! The lobby and main hall are open to the public.

By alexisrachelletx |

My brother and I were visiting Detroit for a weekend, and we're both sort of architecture nerds. When I learned about Pure Detroit's FREE architecture tours, I wanted to do them all. We were able to squeeze in the tours of the Fisher Building and Guardian Building.

THE GUARDIAN BUILDING IS BONKERS. I've seriously never seen anything like it. Designed by Wirt Rowland and in the Art Deco (or "Aztec Deco") style, there is SO MUCH to look at in this building. The building (completed in 1929) has monel metal, Tiffany glass, mosaics, an enormous fresco, and custom tile work. It has a hand-painted canvas ceiling to dampen sound! It's thought to be the first air-conditioned skyscraper.

The Pure Detroit tour of this building is SO WORTH IT. Our tour guide was excellent. And we learned so much about this fascinating building. The tour runs an hour or a little longer, but you won't be bored - NOTHING about this building is boring. I took some pretty amazing pictures in this building - but they don't do the building justice. This is simply a building every Detroit resident or visitor should see for themselves!

(You can just wander in and around the main lobby and the banking lobby by yourselves for free if you want, but I highly recommend the Pure Detroit tour!)

By JVM-Milford-MI |

Stop in on the main floor to catch a glimpse of this amazing building. There is a bank and a Pure Detroit store on the first level, with some great Detroit items.

By GSSATLANTA |

This is a "must see" and dramatic example of wonderful art deco style and attention to detail, The original Tiffany glass and clock is spectacular.

By cdeli2016 |

paintings on archways and ceilings are amazing. Random guy walking around told us the history of the building. I don't think he was part of the staff at the building

By tap |

Awesome one hour tour takes you to the banquet hall on the top floor for a view of the city and a walk around the outside and details about its construction and place in the history of Detroit.

By marriedin03 |

My wife and I walked the two blocks to the Guardian Building and were blown away by the building. You can take a guided tour and learn all kinds of amazing facts about the architecture of the building or simply walk in and have a tour of the bottom on your own for free. Either way, it was a neat thing to see in Detroit.
PS. They have a great gift shop too!

By Lonny |

Breathtakingly beautiful Art Deco building in the beating heart of downtown Detroit. Stunning interior with stunning mosaics, stained & leaded glass panels, mosaic marble floors, etc. Retail Concourse also has incredible architecture & vaulted ceilings. Worth a visit just to savour the talent & craftsmanship of a bygone era. Simply Beautiful.

By Shawncago |

Well, this is a gorgeous building in the heart of downtown Detroit (which, btw, is really, finally, revitalizing). The facade of this redbrick skyscraper is lovely, with interesting details, but it's the interior lobby and an extensive 'retail hall' that are the real stunners. The tilework is exquiste and very ornate. The retail hall has the feel of a cathedral, but with funky aqua glassblock windows. If you spend 10 minutes here, you'll have a great experience. I recommend at least 30 minutes so you can linger and take in the details. A 'don't miss' for architectural fans.

By BigMerk |

It’s centrally located in downtown Detroit and well sign posted. Outside it’s a great looking building but inside it’s stunning. The Art Deco styling, the colourful decor, the glass and the vaulted ceilings all contribute to a great architectural masterpiece. It’s free to enter and they don’t mind you taking photos.

By Shannon H |

As the property manager of the Guardian Building I'd like to provide tips on visiting the building.

Most importantly consider visiting on Sunday's. City Tour Detroit offers FREE historical tours of the building at 12pm and 1:30pm. You will visit not only the main lobby and banking hall but also:
-One of the original vaults (featured in the film Game of Death)
-The original bank board room (featured in the film Game of Death and Bruce Wayne's conference room in Batman V Superman)
-The original bank staff cafeteria on the 32nd floor that is now a banquet room.
This tour offers historical information about the building, its architecture, the original owner and architect.

If you are self-guided and just swinging by, stop at the security desk and pick up a fact sheet.
- Be sure to marvel the Pewabic Pottery installations over the Griswold St. main entrance and around the Congress St. window.
- Spot the carved sculptures flanking each side of the Griswold St. entrance by Corrado Parducci.
- The check stand near the bank is original to the building.
- Admire the stained-glass installation in the elevator banks.
- Examine the ceiling in the banking hall. It was originally installed by Eugenio Painting from Grosse Pointe Michigan and is the only company to do any repairs or restoration of the ceiling. The ceiling is a hand painted and silver/gold leaf perforated canvas with 3 1/2 inches of horsehair behind it applied to the plaster form. The application is intended to make the banking hall acoustically sound.
-The two clocks over the banking hall Monel metal screen are from Tiffany & Co.
-The tile mosaic behind the security desk is the original bank's creed with a figure of a tree, depicting the Michigan state tree, the white pine. This mosaic was was designed by Ezra Winters, who also designed the Lady Michigan Mural in the banking hall.

Enjoy your visit!

Unassuming from the outside and easy to miss, this gem of Detroit history is worth seeking out. If you go to Detroit and want to get a sense of its history, then include this building in your walking tour. (See my other reviews for other don’t miss downtown spots) When you step into this building, it will take you through time. Visit if your feeling troubled, suddenly your problems will feel smaller.

By Kaz K |

this building is well worth to pay the visit. It is gorgeous, elegant and bring me to the era of Detroit of Glory.

By Mary F |

The building was magnificent. If you are a fan of architecture this is for you. Did not due tour, just walked around and if you ask the person at front desk will give you a paper with all the information about the building.

By 1234567890val |

I had the pleasure of working in the Guardian Building in downtown Detroit in the early 1970’s. One of Detroit’s greatest examples of Art Deco architecture. Stunning 40 floor skyscraper.

By Beach1001 |

This is a beautiful building. The art deco ceiling is spectacular. The colors and shapes are beautiful. We did not go on the tour. They are only available on weekends. We walked around the building to look at the architectural features. It is a beautiful building. This was build to be a banking building and no expense was spared.

By Tanya O |

The Guardian Building is a must see! It is a beautiful reminder of times gone past and a true testament to American architecture. Davy gives the best tour!!

By Suzie_Anon |

Wonderful to be able to pop into this building and sit and enjoy the glorious architecture. There’s a cafe too.

By Laura M |

This is an amazing art deco building with intricate mozaics and stunning interior. The shop inside offers unique Detroit souvenirs.

By fozjon |

this is an iconic Detroit treasure. It was great to stop in and visit. Definitely worth a look as you try to envision Detroit in its glory days a few decades ago.

By beverleyb229 |

If you love to look at old buildings from a different era this is the one to see. The ceiling to the walls are magnificence. The colours are alive and tell the history of the city and Michigan.

By IA_Hawks |

Just walking by the outside of the building, you get a sense of the grandeur of the architecture with the design of the arched windows, colors, and tilework.

Inside is where the magic is. An great display of Native American influence with color and design and a custom brick that eventually was named "Guardian Brick" because of it's look.

Fans of Tiffany clocks should be impressed to know that above the entrance to the "Banking Hall", there is a Tiffany glass clock which is only 1 of 4 that exist of that style.

If you are doing an Architectural Tour of Detroit, the Guardian Building is a MUST see, and if you are just visiting it is definitely worth making a small detour to see.

By forestoftheunicorn |

We stopped by during our afternoon in Detroit and it was one of the nicer things to see in the city. Beautiful.

By lpmcguire |

We visited on a cold windy weekday. The tours are apparently around lunch or early afternoon on weekends. Charming lobby and then main hall which continues to be the lobby for a bank branch. I don't believe you will get much value visiting without the tour to add color. I was disappointed that the main hall ceiling was covered with fabric imitating tile work. I am unsure if that was the original design, but definitely unlike any period work, I had ever seen.

By Elizabeth K |

I had the enormous pleasure of taking part in all three of the FREE tours offered by puredetroit.com (check page for current dates/times) of and departing from The Guardian Building directed by Michael Boettcher (of the Guardian, skyscrapers in the area, and the architectural art of Corrado Parducci - each lasting about 90 minutes). He was absolutely outstanding! While he said he has been volunteering to give the tours for some four years (his "real job" is as a Community Development planner for Macomb County), it is obvious that he is not just doing it out of “obligation” or “for the money” (even though the delighted participants spontaneously gave him tips for his free tours due to their excellence), or that he is just repeating a memorized script like a bored robot. He was super well-informed, open to and encouraging questions throughout all three tours, enthusiastic, has a sense of humor, and all around, very evidently loves what he is doing and made the outings a wonderful experience! I would definitely recommend these (all 3 is the best option for a complete overview of downtown Detroit) for an awsome outing! (P.S. There is no way to include a truly "representative" group of photos, due to the scope and number of beautiful places, you just have to see them all!)

By LanceCT |

Not much to say here but make sure you walk in to check it out, it is very cool and you will not be disappointed

By yopinhu |

This was the highlight of the tour. I've been to Downtown Detroit many times, but I didn't know there were such beautiful buildings and spaces so close by. It's definitely a must-visit spot.

By SusanTitus |

The first floor lobby with its magnificent tiles and stained glass is something to behold. The Guard station has a page that describes the history of this outstanding building

By kennewicktraveler |

The building speaks for itself, but our tour guide, Laurie, with Tour Detroit added her knowledge and insight. What a wonderful building and one of three designed by Wirt Rowland with a block of each other from the late 1920s. No expense was spared in this building and there is so much to absorb, from the art to architecture to the view to the care that has been taken with this building. There are many gems of building in downtown Detroit, but this is tops.

By Bellecoop |

My 10 year old daughter and I drove right in front of the building and parked on a Friday evening about 6. Lady at the desk was very kind and helpful about things to do in Detroit. To get the best look and pics of the guardian be there before 6PM. Gate wasn't locked yet so she let us take a quick peek.

By Shaun S |

This is a beautiful building in Detroit. Definitely stop in and check out the lobby. Only takes 10 minutes but completely amazing.

By R. Stanley |

The lobby of this building is usually accessible and definitely worth a stop. It's simply the grandest example of art deco architecture and design in the country.

By jpeytonm |

I visited this "cathedral for financiers" on a walking tour, and it was so beautiful! I definitely want to take the building tour next time.

By Greens |

We did the tour on a Sunday afternoon and returned with friends for our own walk around. Beautiful building everyone should see.

By Michele A |

The art is stunning and the history is amazing. This is a feast for the eyes. You can book a tour or just go inside for some coffee in the cafe and explore on your own. The design and opulence that is inside is just amazing.

By MidwestKathM |

Through the years I have shared this Art Deco skyscraper masterpiece with local family and friends as well as out-of-town visitors, mostly recently a Detroit native back for a visit. Designed by architect Wirt Roland, it was built in the late 1920s for the Union Trust bank. Start by checking out the building's main entrance from across the street. It's Guardian Red bricks make the building stand out in the city's skyline. The dome above the entrance is made of custom Pewabic tile, and on either side are sculptures by Corrado Parducci. Walk inside the lobby...it's free! Enjoy marble floors, walls, and stairs. Look up and all around at the Rookwood tile ceiling...and at the mosaic tile mural by Ezra Winter behind the guard desk. At the top of the stairs, note the Tiffany clock set in a beautiful Monel steel screen. Walk up the stairs into what originally was the bank lobby and look up at the indigenous-inspired ceiling done on horsehair. Another Ezra Winter mural depicts the industries and natural resources around the State of Michigan. Before you leave, check out the elevator lobbies with beautiful stained glass, ornate elevator doors, and reproduction light fixtures. Definitely worth a visit to appreciate this Art Deco treasure...a sign of the 1920s boom in Detroit.

By LiketoeatCincinnati |

This is a very old style office building with awesome architecture. There is a shopping promenade with a bank and coffee shop. The outside is great too.

By Stephen N |

The Guardian Building's interior harkens back to the days when Detroit was one of the most prosperous cities in America and reminds me of bank buildings I used to see as a kid. The interior is immaculate and colorful though not at all big. To walk in and have a look costs you nothing but 10 minutes of your time. We did it but I don't think it's a must do.

By PDKCanada |

The architecture in Detroit is amazing & this is the jewel in the crown.Any time I have guests & am in Detroit this is a must stop.Often a busy area (parking) in daytime . I'm often in Detroit socially at night And will stop out front and have my guests go in since the doors are not locked (guard inside). They always come out with a look of amazment. You just dont see this in new buildings. Please stop.P.S. Detroit from downtown to midtown is booming

My husband and I joined Pure Detroit's free noon tour on Memorial Day Sunday. Our tour group had 25 people, and the tour was about 1 hour. The current month's tour schedule can be found on Pure Detroit's website.

Our guide was a recent History major graduate from Wayne State University. He was extremely knowledgeable and engaging. We learned not only about the history and architecture of the building but also the history of Detroit, especially during the roaring 20s, the Great Depression in the 30s, and the WW2. As non-Americans, we had no idea that Detroit played such an important role in the war. It's hard to imagine the city's hey days now given how rundown it looks.

We spent time discussing the Native American-inspired motifs on the ground floor, the important meetings that took place in the beautiful boardroom on the 6th floor, as well as random tidbits about Detroit while enjoying the view from the 32nd floor. What a gorgeous view of the Detroit River, downtown Detroit, and Windsor! Thank you Pure Detroit for securing public access to this historical building. If you have time for only one attraction in Detroit, make it the Guardian Building.

By CanDog |

Well preserved. A must see while in Detroit
Within walking distance, not off the beaten path. Take the time to visit, 30 minutes max.

By Uma R |

The tour guide was amazing, explained the art and architecture of the building very well. It's well worth the time to add this tour before or after the walking tour of the city.

By phvi2617 |

The Guardian Building is a wonderful example of Art Deco architecture. The lobby features metalwork, a mosaic, murals, and a stunning vaulted ceiling, all beautifully decorated. It's free to stop in the lobby during business hours.

By Lux2 |

They just don’t construct buildings like this anymore. This fabulous place is a must see. The attention to detail is amazing and worth the time to walk around.

By YetanotherCATravler |

Amazingy building. Built in 1928. Art deco Aztec style. Majestic. Perfectly preserved. It came alive through the tour by Davvy with City Tour Detroit.

By Mickey M |

Beautifully handcrafted
Ceiling made of entirely of cloth. It was a site to see. I highly recommend this.

By Anthony H |

We heard bits and pieces of a tour that was wrapping up (not sure how or where you sign up for these), so I would recommend finding that out. The tour guide seemed very knowledgeable and took folks into areas that the general public did not appear able to go to. Just walking into the first floor of the building though is well worth a stop. I've never seen a building like this one anywhere in my travels. It has some very incredible art deco features including a beautiful clock and windows. Surprisingly, most everything is a canvas painting and not a mosaic.

By CaseyJones6325 |

This is a very beautiful building. Pure Detroit does excellent tours of this building. It fells like you are in a church.

By Kylie D |

I dragged the whole family into this building and it did not disappoint. It's gorgeous and wonderfully maintained. The teenager even said, "Wow, this is neat", which is high accolades coming from a 13 yr old! Take your time to look around and be sure to see it from the outside too. It's worth the stop!

By Julie R |

If you love buildings and/or history... don't miss... I suggest giving the guy a nice tip at the end... well worth it.

By skaszab2016 |

A self taught tour showed us wonderful art, architecture and turn of the century genius. Was like going into a cathedral in Europe, the walls spoke to us of creativity and history. Wonderful.

By diane j |

Jacob from Pure Detroit was an amazing guide. He told us the history and interesting stories about the architecture and designs throughout the building. I highly recommend this tour and Jacob as your guide. Hope to take his tour of the Fisher Building in the future.

By SharonB231 |

This is a very architecturally stunning building. Look up Pure Detroit website for times of free tours to really enhance your experience. We came here at 1 PM on Saturday for a tour. Tours last one hour and you see the main entrance, the second floor where the Pure Detroit store and a bank are located. Then you ride the elevators to the 32nd floor for great views of the city. We learned a lot about the history of the building and Detroit on our tour with Jacob. If you cannot do a tour, you can still enter the building and look around. This building is worth a visit!

By Ben R |

I've never seen a place with such unique design inside. I really wish we would've been able to go on the tour, but they are only held on the weekends & we were there for the Lions game on Sunday and unable to do both. I thought it was worth the short walk we took over from our hotel. Very different & classic.

By Brookref |

My sister was visiting me in town and had been nagging for a long time about wanting to sign up for the Guardian tour, so I caved in for the weekend. It was actually very interesting, the view from the top floor is impressive, our guide was very funny like he enjoyed his jobl

By threeamigos59405 |

Opened in 1929. Not sure of hours, but if you stop by the desk, they will give you an information sheet on this building. It is so lovely and the history is something! The outside of the building is very pretty, I was encouraged to come here when I was on another tour. So glad I got to come and see this!

By Davor A |

This art deco building in Detroit is truly beautiful, imposing and full of details to admire, unmissable!

By Trevor L |

Very fascinating tour. Was very interesting to see the history of Detroit though the eyes of the building.

By Chris W |

The one hour tour by Pure Detroit is outstanding. Free of charge. It runs every weekend every two hours. Great history of the building and the people involved in building it.

By K. Nock It Off |

This is a great example of an art-deco skyscraper, a must for anyone interested in 20th century architecture or Detroit history. Heavily ornamented and well maintained it is a gem in the financial district. Visited this building many times over the last 20 - 25 years. In 2022 and 2023 took some Detroit architecture tours and visited the building already with professional guides. I come here every time I bring visitors to Detroit, it is now part of my own route.
I recommend taking one of the available tours to appreciate parts of the building that are normally closed to the public. Plus, you will surely get more information that way. If tours are not available, at least do some basic reading prior to the visit. It will help to appreciate the grandeur of this structure.

The inside of the Guardian Building is just beautiful in it's intracacy. It was late in the day so parked across the street and we only saw the first floor but it was worth it.

By Eric B |

Art Deco classic finish at the beginning of the depression. Colorful tile called guardian brick with Tennessee stone. Meticulous detailing in the interior. Built as a bank building originally. You can self tour if you want. A lot to take in interior and exterior

By Lori L |

beautiful inside very surprised to see how lovely cute stores inside nice for a hour long visit and learning the history was great too

By Don G |

I was told my a friend to visit the guardian building while in Detroit or I would have never gone there. The art deco lobby and entrances are stunning -- some of the most spectacular art deco work I have ever seen in person. The people at the security desk seemed oblivious to the art around them and seemed perturbed to have someone in their lobby, but that did not detract for the art deco.

By David T |

Jacob from Pure Detroit did a great job of showing us the fabulous Guardian Building. It is truly a must see if you have any interest in Detroit history. Very informative and personable!

By tworoadsconverged |

Arrived just before closing on our only day in Detroit, but were so happy we didn't miss this. Architecture and attention to detail of construction of this time is not to be missed.

By Taylor B |

The Guardian Building in Detroit, Michigan, is a landmark skyscraper whose nickname, Cathedral of Finance, alludes both to its resemblance to a cathedral and to New York City's Woodworth Building, which had earlier been dubbed the Cathedral of Commerce. Located at 500 Griswold Street in downtown Detroit's Financial District, it was constructed in 1928-1929 and is a bold example of Art Deco architecture. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989. The main frame of the skyscraper rises 36 stories and capped by two asymmetric spires, one extending four additional stories. It features major innovations in both design and technology. For example, designer Wirt Rowland specified Monel metal instead of the commonly used brass and bronze for all exposed metalwork on the building. Rowland also dispensed with traditional forms of decoration, preferring colored brick, stone and terra cotta set in geometric patterns on the interior and exterior of the structure. The elevator system represented the first use of technology which automatically stopped the car level with the floor and opened the doors. The building's three-story, vaulted lobby is lavishly decorated with Pewabic and Rookwood tile. On the second floor, note the clock by Tiffany. And the mosaics by muralist Ezra Winter, the sculptures of Safety and Security that flank the main entrance, the semi-circular dome and the Montel metal gates in the basement.

By LoraxGirl |

Truly awe-inspiring architecture that transports you to another time. We did a self-guided walk through in less than 15min.

By Raymond S |

Just walk in and head up the stairs. The first thing you will notice is the Tiffany and Company Clock. The main hall is just beautiful.

By tnknitter |

We arrived early for a 2:00 Sunday Pure Detroit tour (free), and enjoyed browsing the gift shop, looking around the lobby, and relaxing in the many lobby chairs while we waited. The tour ended up being a very large group, so we dropped out after seeing the top floor and the wonderful view from there. The noon tour was much smaller, according to the guide, so I would suggest trying to get that one if you have the choice. Also of note are that street parking was free on Sunday, and the restrooms upstairs were much better than the lobby (which has no men's room at all). The Guardian Building was the only landmark we visited as we passed through Detroit, and it was well worth the stop to see the unique architecture.

By beachbum40w |

If you happen to be walking around Hart Plaza or the Financial District, stop by the Guardian Building. It looks like an old church that was converted to a bank. They have a small souvenir shop inside to buy Detroit branded stuff. Only downside is no water fountain inside. The coffee shop was closed when we were there on a Sunday. I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to see this place. Only if you happen to be in the area for something else.

By Sharon S |

The art deco design is lovely. I wandered around the lobby taking lots of photos. Even the elevator doors are decorated.

By Ben W |

I visited this building on a walking tour of the city and did not expect to discover this gem along the way. It's really worth dropping by for 20 minutes to take a look at the foyer and the main hall.

By SBlisa |

Highly recommend seeing this gorgeous early 20th century building. Contact the Detroit Historical
Society and see if they can recommend a guided tour of all the buildings in downtown Detroit. So worth it.

By PaulYYZ |

The interior of the building should be seen by all who visit the city. It is one of the most incredible things you will see in the city.

By Mollie O |

This amazing building boosts of an Art Deco feel with an Aztec influence. It is colorful and beautiful. Use of locally made Pewabic tiles add to the local gel. It is the home of a bank but small business also are off the lobby including a store featuring Metro Detroit gifts and items. Great stop.

By Maria R |

Beautiful inside and out. Definitely worth a look. Don't be shy, come in. There's no admission cost. You'll feel like a Hollywood movie!

By Tropicalmich |

A stunning building. You can just wander in and take a look. It's a combination of art deco and Aztec design which sounds odd but works beautifully. Not to miss.

By Jason C |

This building has some cool architecture inside and out; was not able to do the guided tour but did visually see some awesome and odd features! The facility is free to enter and explore and photograph!

By StockholmKindaGuy |

Detroit has many fine examples of Art Deco architecture, but none might be as stunning as the Guardian Building in the heart of the city's downtown. The height of this National Historic Landmark will require standing back a ways to take in the buildings exterior. The main entry features beautiful ornate stone and tile work.

Hold your breath when you walk inside and be prepared to be dazzled by the building's stunning interior. Take several moments to enjoy the Guardian's lobby, including the elevators and stain glass windows. Be prepared to spend a lot of time looking up, the ceilings in this building are highly decorative. Walk up the stairs to the banking hall, on either side of the doorway are beautiful Tiffany clocks. Geometric patters adorn the beautiful curved ceiling, with the focal point being the Michigan map on the back wall.

The Guardian Building is a great place to take a break and enjoy the splendors of of this historic city and the building's 90th anniversary.

By julie |

My sister and I were in Detroit and we went to see the Guardian Building. As soon as we walked in the building we were told about the tour that had just started. The man leading the tour was full of interesting information about the building, the city and the history of Detroit. My sister and I were so pleased with the tour. The building is beautiful and the tour made it so much better. If you are in Detroit this is building is a must to see and the tour is so worth it.

By M K |

Unless you go on the official weekend tour, all you can see is the lobby. Yes it's a very nice lobby, but I saw the whole thing within about 5 minutes. Along with that, the security guards just act annoyed that you are there at all.

The Fisher building is way better. You can explore more of it and security guards don't hassle you.

By Doug48864 |

What a gem. Built in the 1920's with style and sophistication not found in new construction. You need not take a tour (though that would be great) to appreciate the beauty, simply look up at the exterior and take a stroll though the lobby.

By Ava I |

If you love architecture and hand-crafted design, you'll love this building-as it contains stunning architecture and amazing motifs.

By Olaf61 |

This building literally took my breath away. When I walked into the foyer area I just gasped. The colours and grandeur of this building is astounding. Take the time to walk through the bank area toward the back wall and enjoy the beauty of the mural. You can take photos of the mural but not of the banking area. The coffee shop is pretty good too!

By xris2018 |

The building is impressive on the outside but the real wonders are inside in the lobby and nave. beautiful glass work, tile frescoes and stone work. Lush.

By Bob-in-Wells |

You are able to visit the lobby and atrium of this fabulous building. The staff gave me a page of background information. The design and detail are breathtaking. I spoke admiringly with a man who works in the bank located in the building who said, "When I first came here I couldn't believe my eyes. I try not to take for granted working here."

By George H |

The Guardian Building has a beautiful classic interior that has to be seen. Easy to find and no charge to stop in and look around.

By laurie a |

This building is so beautiful inside. Every detail is Art Deco. Wandering around you see more and more including the elevators and ceilings.

By Luciebelle |

Exceptional building, a must to be seen visiting Detroit. Interiors in the hall but also the 32nd floor and the basement need the visit. Ask for a free tour. The City Tour Detroit team is wonderful, especially Melissa Wilson who spent the all visit explaining and answering questions with a great smily knowledge

By EllenChr |

Absolutely wonderful. Really a must see if you like art deco or/and architecture. You just walk in from the street and get awed by the lobby

By Liz G |

Great place to visit. I wish we had the forethought to schedule a tour of it. I'm sure the history of this beautiful building is impressive. Worht the trip to at lest step in and admire the architecture and beauty.

By Renee C |

This was worth visiting. The lobby and banking hall are beautiful. Amazing Art Deco. You can walk in and the banking hall has a souvenir store and coffee shop.

By Brandon |

Most shops were closed when we visited, but the one shop was open and the staff were amazing. I have forgotten the name, but they sold Michigan trinkets. The building it's self is beautiful, and the architecture is something to be appreciated.

By Barbara S |

$6 tickets are sold in the small gift shop on the first floor of the Guardian in the retail promenade. Tours of this no-expense-spared American Art Deco "Cathedral of Finance" are an hour and include the marble lobby; the Tiffany clock promenade, formerly lined with 40 teller booths; the giant underground vaults; and the 32d floor with its terrific views of the metro area. Our tour guide Davy was incredibly well-informed about the building and Detroit's history.

By Nathan W |

We take all of our friends here who are in town to show them the interior of the building and the murals. It's great because there is casual sofa seating and a coffee shop in the main hall, so you can stop by and relax for a while. I highly recommend seeing it.

By Lynetric R |

This building is absolutely amazing! We saw this building on TripAdvisor but were unable to get the tour. However we were able to go into the bank part of the building and you can see that architecture on the outside of the building in the front of the building as you enter it’s amazing. If you like history and appreciate different art and architecture this building is a must see! I only wish we had been able to take the tour we will get it next time!!!

By Jason G |

Seeking refuge from the sub-zero temps last weekend, the Guardian Building was a convenient (and free) stop right in the heart of the main downtown sites. Interior is gorgeous and certainly worth a look.

By Brian S |

Not much to see or experience here as you can't get to the rooftop which would have been very cool- the architecture is nice but nothing unique.

By elJefe_TO |

This stylish red brick building has impressive exterior accents of colour, including designs at the entrances. But the lobby, elevator lobbies, and retail court really have impressive design and colour schemes. It's a well-kept building (at least from the public view) and worth at least a quick visit.

By AmyLynn1980 |

The Guardian Building simply must been seen with your own two eyes to be believed ... such incredible beauty, grandeur and attention to detail. An Art Deco masterpiece heavily influenced by Aztec styling, built during Detroit's more prosperous times when clearly no expense was spared.
Kudos to anyone involved in ensuring this building is kept up and never allowed to become vacant like so many other beautiful structures in Detroit.
It is well worth spending a few minutes wandering about to check everything out!

By DickandRobin |

The most beautiful building in Detroit. On our must see list for visitors. A challenge to park nearby because many do the same. Mosaics are unparalleled--like a cathedral.

By Fred O. Maples |

I recently visited the inside of this building and I was right in time for a tour. There is a store on the inside called Pure Detroit. They have them there during the weekends. It's about an hour but it goes into the details of the building as well as a short walk around the building and also the 32nd floor. I highly recommend checking it out.

By Kathleen W |

Just the architectural beauty of this building inspires a person. Worth a quick walk through. The elaborate detail and colors are splendid

By TravelerCentralFLA |

My wife and I visited the Guardian Building in the financial district of Detroit to see the amazing architecture. The building was built in the late 1920s and is a wonderful Art Deco design. The interior is amazingly designed and painted. I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful historic building. You have to see it yourself because photos don't show how amazing it is.

By allisonodenthal |

Just GO see it! They don't make them like this any more! A real marvel of architecture and design. A MUST SEE if you are in Detroit!

By Mike |

Participated in a free tour through Pure Detroit (held regularly on Saturdays at noon and 2pm). I’m not an architecture aficionado, but this was a stunning display of the Art Deco style. Our guide, Steve, was remarkably knowledgeable about the history, design and craftsmanship of the Guardian Building. The tour was not overly crowded, and there was plenty of accessibility for questions. The attention to detail in the construction of the building was well represented through Steve’s presentation. All in, building and the tour were time well-spent and I highly recommend.

By JimDeBerry |

inside and out, it is amazing to see the Architecture. The Guardian building is a True Treasure. Its worth stopping in.

By yellowbirdVermont |

This building is so impressive inside and outside. The stained glass is magnificent. The lobby is a museum of architecture in itself. The colors and workmanship are definitely worth a visit. This is a must see building.

By aurora g |

A must do for anyone visiting the city! We toured the Guardian Building with Lorrie and had a grand time. The amount of detail Lorrie went into was impressive. She let us tour at our own pace while simultaneously keeping the group on track.

Lorrie has a beautiful way of explaining things and answered all our questions better than I could have expected. I had actually taken this tour once before but I still managed to learn new things the second time around.

We live in Detroit but our tour mates were out of towners.

By Latty |

Unbelievable architecture! What a beautiful building, so well preserved. The Stained glass windows are wonderful! It deserves a visit!

By ZxTravel |

This building is amazing beautiful Art Deco Aztec. A must visit when you are in Detroit. There is a small coffee place inside the building. We took a tour on Saturday at 3 pm. It was great. Out tour guide was knowledgeable and he took us to the 32nd floor.

By KathleenAnn1956 |

Great tour, worth the $12 ticket. Beautiful building. Nothing like it elsewhere. Guide had some interesting facts and good pace.

By mrsirin |

This building is interesting from the outside, but the inside is as beautiful as a cathedral. Well worth seeing.

By TakeFiveTravel |

If you enjoy architecture or history, you’ll enjoy seeing the Guardian Building. We saw it as part of the Downtown Architecture tour, which I also recommend.

By Mark B |

No words or photos can possibly explain what it's like inside this Gem. GO see for yourself, but call first so you get a tour and don't miss anything, you won't be disappointed.

By Allan L |

The lobbies of the Guardian Building are equal to or better than the most fabulous office builings in Manhattan. The design and workmanship is truly amazing and, with its Aztec motif - is quite different from what you might expect.

By jabb |

We were told to go see this building and I'm so glad we did! It's absolutely beautiful!!! Every detail of it. Do not miss out, the elevators even!!

By Joan Y |

Yes, this building is beautiful. Do I think it's a must see top 5 spot in Detroit (as google suggested?) ...no. Sorry. The Art Deco, colors, and design are amazing and I'm grateful to have seen it, but you can appreciate it all in 5 minutes if not quicker. The lobby is open 24/7 but they to put gates up when the building closes for business (yes you can peel past the gates to catch a look). There are free tours on the weekends only (12 and 2p) where you can see a little bit more from the upper floors.

By RozzyW |

Detroit has many beautiful art deco buildings, the Guardian building being the crown jewel. Take the trip to enter this skyscraper and marvel at the ornate lobby and corridors.

By James L. Oswald |

Don't Miss this Great Time Capsule left in Detroit. When in Detroit this is a must see building for anyone who love architecture and old buildings.

By Igorek007 |

This is very interesting building. Definitely worth few minutes to walk in and take a look at this beautiful mosaic. And its free!

By kburkhal99 |

The inside is nothing like I would have expected in downtown Detroit. I wish they more information aboutt he history of this building available for visitors.

By charmking |

We stopped by the Guardian building late in the day about 5:30pm. We stood in the lobby and looked up around and we amazed! Gorgeous Art Deco is everywhere so go crazy will your camera/phone. Walk up the stairs into the retail hall and, wow, even more. There are a couple of beverage stands and a Detroit themed souvenir shop there. Restrooms are available, just ask the lobby desk for a key and where.
Afterwards walk a couple of short blocks toward the river area for nice views of Canada across the water.

By CanadianNomad |

You don’t need a tour of this place if you don’t want one. The outside of the building is beautiful but the start is inside! The colours and the lighting once inside are spectacular photo opportunities. Awesome Art Deco style architecture!

By Rose Marie P |

Could not leave Detroit without seeing The Guardian Building. They don't make 'em like this any more. So much Pewabic tile. Fabulous!

By niliad |

Well, this building and the architecture was great in midwest; however, it was not as special as it is advertised! You are easily able to find similar places in different cities of the world. Take care of time if you are eager to visit the main room.

By tymetraveler222 |

This skyscraper was built in the 1920's. It was built in the ArtDeco style of architecture. It simply is a stunning building, with wonderful creativity throughout. First thing that caught my eye was the array of colors. Phenomenal displays of intricate tile work, unusual art pieces, saturated stained glass, murals/mosaics/marble and more! Many textures used. Marble, travertine, metal, stone. I personally loved the domed ceiling. A treat for the eyes every where you look.

Street parking or nearby garage. A few shops, small snack shop, seating arrangements, tours. No charge to enter. Check out the bathrooms! Nice maps/info given out at welcome desk. Very nice docents. Snack shop is good, also.

By Tina W |

If you are in Detroit, you have to see this Building. Beautifully hand painted in every room. Stained glass windows that are out of this world.

By Bruce S |

If you are downtown and have never stopped in, I highly recommend a visit. Be prepared to get a kink in your neck looking up at the ceiling. Check out the evelators as well.

By Michael B |

We just dropped in because we saw a signboard outside suggesting we come in for tacos! We were able to recharge our phones and our bodies in this beautiful old bank with vaulted cathedral ceiling views. The first-floor lobby is a public space.

By JJTOH |

We were visiting the area and were tipped off to the building by a local resident who had worked in the building for a long time. I like architecture and appreciate Art Deco, so a few blocks were no problem. We looked only at the first couple of floors. They were jaw dropping: nothing on the outside prepares you for the detail and profusion of color inside. Not to be missed.

By Jam Tart Travels |

Such an unsung gem in the heart of Downtown Detroit. Whenever we take visitors here they’re stunned by the building’s interior design.

The Mayan influences, the Tiffany clock and so many details to take in, which makes for an extraordinary sight.

Pure Detroit run free guided tours at the weekend and are well worth the 45 mins-1hr to get a greater insight into the building’s history.

By LeeAnn B |

Whilst we didn't go on a tour I hear they are wonderful we did walk around the foyer and shop are to admire the art deco. Lots of locals use the building for wedding pics but the security guards ensure they do not inhibit others viewing pleasure. The building is magnificent and you can spend as long as you like and take as many pictures as you want.
A definite must see.

By Andrew S |

I always suggest my Airbnb guests visit this building and stop inside. I recently was driving around some Chinese investors and we stopped outside and had them run in really quick to get a look. You don't need to stay there long, but you will really appreciate the high art deco ceilings and Michigan mural up the steps.

By James M |

Lobby is magnificent - so much color and detail in ceilings and walls. Now offers area for a drink or small bites while soaking up this grand old beauty. Well worth popping in when visiting the revitalizing Downtown Detroit.

By TruBlue97 |

The tour was wonderful, full of very interesting details that greatly increased my appreciation for the Guardian Building in particular, and the surrounding buildings in downtown Detroit in general. I think people will find this tour fun, as well as educational.

By LowtideLowlife |

Free Tours! on Weekends. You could tell the Tour guide was passionate about the history and art prevelant in Detroit, especially this building. All kinds of nuggets of interesting facts and unique tales that make this building both a treasure and a landmark. Get on one of the free tours offered by Pure Detroit. Really a cool thing to see!

By John M |

The building offers free tours that give you a good overview of this historic landmark in downtown Detroit.

The tour’s highlights are the stunning lobby (featuring colored terra cotta tiles and a huge mural of the state of Michigan-see photo) and an elevator ride to the 32nd floor where you can enjoy sweeping views of the Detroit area.

By LulusOtherMom |

You might not have thought to come to see this incredible structure, but if you don't include it in your visit to Downtown Detroit, it'll be your loss.

By clh3132017 |

Anyone who is downtown visiting Detroit, must stop by the Guardian Building, especially if they like Art Deco. The mosiac tile is amazing. A real architectural treat.

By Michelle S |

Laurie was an amazing tour guide! Very informative and passionate! Beautiful building and even more impressive history of the city of Detroit.

By StockholmKindaGuy |

Detroit has several architectural jewels, this is one of their best. If you love architecture or just love beautiful buildings, this historic downtown building is a must see and it's free. Opened in 1929, the architect Wirt Rowland designed a real masterpiece. Everything from the entrance to the interior, is dropped dead gorgeous. So many great details, including a Tiffany clock . For Michiganders, there's a beautiful map of the state showing it's most important industries.

A must see.

By artgurl33 |

We visited the Guardian Building on a Saturday morning for the guided tour. Unfortunately, the tour guide was a no show. Without the tour guide we were only able to visit the first floor. But, what we did see of the building was beautiful! A lot of the decorations are actually fabric and the stained glass windows and lights are breathtaking.

By kathie l |

We decided to walk down Griswold St on our way to the QLine and someone told us to walk inside the bank building. It is a wow factor. I know you can tour but we asked the desk info if we could just visit for a short while. Find one of the chairs against the wall and sit for 10-15 minutes and just look up down side to side it is amazing mosaic title and arched as the pictures show. Art Deco at its finest. Should have signed up for tour to see the top floor view. Not open at night-but worth the quick side trip. These vaulted ceilings are amazing. Elevator leads to offices. Free and worth the view. You can entry on either side.

By ChopperDopper |

Was trying to find the bathroom and ended up in this basement filled with taxidermied animals and Harry Styles merch the vision still keeps me up at night

By bobca1947 |

This 40 story skyscraper is impressive inside and outside. You can't craftsmanship like this in today's more modern buildings. You can feel the grandeur of this unconventional building from the outside, and you feel it even more once you see the interior. I was awestruck by the explosion of color and the blending of Native American, Aztec, and the Arts and Crafts influences. This building was completed in 1929 just months before the start of the Great Depression.

By Davidgoodkarma |

Beautiful building if you enjoy architecture then you will love this beautiful American treasure! Very well maintained and some nice shops inside..

By DisneyDarwin |

Yes, it's only a building, but if you can only step inside one building on your visit, then make it this one. We had a tour and were told that the architect (who also did the Penobscot Building down the street) used Indian art and themes and strong coloring over the prevailing conventions of the time. It is easy to see in the beautiful elevator lobbies, arches, walls and more. The details on the outside are impressive as well. Worth a look, even if only 15 minutes.

By Cynthia B |

Gorgeous art deco skyscraper. We did an outside tour of downtown only. There is an audio tour on Trip Advisor for downtown.

By RoseloverTroy |

We took a tour with Pure Detroit. What a Gem. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. The view of the city from the 32nd floor was great.

By Faustine A |

Laurie our tour guide was amazing!
She knew a lot about The Guardian Building, was pleasant and on time.
I recommend this to everyone visiting Detroit, especially since this tour was FREE!

By Gary S |

I only realized of the existence of this amazing building and it's gorgeous interior after watching an episode of DETROIT 187.
I lived in Metro-Detroit my whole life and I never knew this architectural gem existed.
I recommend a visit to this beautiful building for locals and visitors alike!
Take some time to view and take in the craftsmanship that just doesn't exists in today's world.

By James A |

This building is old, but it never gets old, it only gets more refined and better with age. This is the Clint Eastwood of buildings.

By Eliz H |

The building itself is nice to go in, grab a coffee & a Pure Detroit T-shirt while you look at all the colors everywhere. The tour is worth it!
