Fantastic journey through the life of Christ. Lovely, picturesque outdoor reenactment of the life of Christ.

If you are in the area the Wichita Wildlife Refuge is a great visit. There are plenty of hiking, buffalo (bison) and longhorn cattle. The Holy City is a nice place to visit while there. It was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps founded in 1933. If you are not familiar with the CCC look it up. They did a lot of great projects. Plus the boys and young men earned money for their families.

Beautiful place. Amazing how much this area looks like Israel. Fascinating how they've kept it going all these years. Fun to climb around on things and view the area

If you are here for BCT/AIT graduation or visiting the Lawton/Fort Sill area, I highly recommend visiting The Holy City! The chapel alone is worth the trip out there and they have a few other interesting areas to see. They have a small gift shop where you can purchase a block to dedicate to someone to put in the general pathway, Veteran pathway, or couples area! Overall, it is a great trip, just not too much to do and it's a bit of a drive.

We drove up and were not impressed. Not what we were expecting. I would say it’s a miss unless you are interested in things like this.

We picked our son up from fort sill after basic training. We spent some time here and got some great pictures. Not much to do but enjoy the view, which is great. Take the time to go here and Mount Scott, which is amazing!

Stopped by here after hiking up Mt. Scott. Not a lot to see really but if you are passing by worth a quick stop and view. Nothing exciting though, but not worth a trip out just to see that alone.

This is Inside the Wichita Mountains National Park. Design has an eye for detail. You will recognize different venues from the Bible. I felt as if I’m walking in the steps of ancients. I have always wanted to go to Israel and have not had the chance to do so, this only made me want to go more. It was very hot out but I did not mind the heat the buildings were so interesting. Not a lot of people so I liked this that much more. If you live close this is a must to go see. I have not seen it for Easter Services but I will for sure go back.

This location is within the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in southern Oklahoma. I wouldn't make a special trip to see it (unless you are going for the actual performance), but it is interesting from a historical perspective. The indoor space with the Moses display is a little creepy in my opinion. It is populated with what appears to be discarded department store mannequins dressed as biblical characters. This room does have historical photos of the site as it was used back in time beginning around 1930.

Really enjoyed the visit. Walked around all the buildings, quite amazing how they were built. The gift shop was closed. My husband went several times to the show as a child and still talks about it. But we enjoyed just walking around. Some areas were labeled, and there is a small museum of the history of it. Highly recommend.

Great place to take kids to walk around and worth stopping by. Have never attended their sun rise service but here its fun as well.

I visited the Holy City with my family and we were completely moved and blown away by what we saw. What an incredible place, with such a rich and interesting history. Be you religious or not, this is a must if you're in the area.

Has the longest running play at Easter in the USA every year definitely worth seeing
Even not at Easter has a lot of history and nice view

I am from Oklahoma and never knew this existed. A beautiful place! Can’t wait until the summer when the play is taking place.

Was awesome to see, Very spiritual and serene. Would recommed others to take the time to visit the Holy City.

Very run down and difficult to walk in due to broken steps
The gift shop was closed and no one around
Hot and dusty grounds
Not a good place to visit with kids

My wife likes to go here sometimes when I take the family to see the mountains. This year she wanted to go to their Christmas show. I didn't enjoy it mainly because of my kids being with us. I should've brought some of my cold weather backpacking gear, but keeping them warm, trying to get a jogging stroller up the rocky hill, and make our way back to the truck down the rocky hill in the dark isn't something I would do again. Maybe we'll try again when they're older.

Eh, wasn't really that impressed, however I am not a religious person so it wasn't anything special to me. It was in the wildlife park so we swung by to check it out.

We just drove through because the land management guys were performing a massive “controlled” burn and the smoke was very thick. Stunningly beautiful though.

I was sad that my children did not get to walk the entire city due to preparation for their Easter pageant but we will be back for them to see everything this summer

The city was built out of rock from the area to depict the last few days of the life of Christ. It is great to see how it was made almost a hundred years ago. Also the chapel is a must see.

This is very close to base and interesting to see. It's a little creepy. I didn't know anything about it and thought it was ruins, so I was disappointed that it was just built to look like ruins from Jerusalem. However, it was something interesting to see and we also visited the wildlife preservation center and Crater Lake and saw prairie dogs and a buffalo in the area, so all in all, it was cool.

Only 2 plays are held yearly - one before Palm Sunday and and one before Easter, and they are definitely worth attending. Dress for the cold and wind. No charge, donations are accepted, though. This is the longest running passion play in America.
Besides the passion play, you can visit the Holy City daily. They have a small gift shop and restrooms. The buildings are interesting to walk through, especially after attending the play.

Traveling west, along hwy 49, thru the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge:
You first come to Mount Scott Observation Area; The road is closed, however you can hike to the top.
Next you come to the Holy City of the Wichita's; This where you find the Easter Passion Play. It was raining cats and dogs the morning we came. We were the only car in the parking lot. BUMMER. The ground hogs would come out and they head back down the holes. The buildings from the outside looked great
As you drive west you will find many buffalo roaming the grasslands.
What a beautiful drive. We will be back and spend more time

We enjoyed the short walk around this area. There is no charge to walk around the rock structures and church buildings. There is a gift shop onsite.

We weren't expecting much from this place, but it was an interesting stop that all the kids enjoyed.

Grab a book and enjoy the peace. Historic replica if a beautiful time. Tis time of year very relaxing and enjoyable.

The old "city" has been a part of the mountains for many years and is the site for a Pasion Play each Easter. It also has a chapel you can schedule for weddings, etc.

My husband and I found this to be a charming stop while visiting the Witcha Mountain Refuge. It’s well maintained and has beautiful structures for taking pictures.

I have never heard of this place. I have never been to Oklahoma. Came into town for my nephews basic training at Ft. Sill. After graduation we came upon The Holy City and its amazing. It was perfect blue sky and even if you aren't spiritual, this place is something awesome to see. The hand painted ceiling in the one building was gorgeous. This is something everyone should see atleast once. Its a little hard to find, but for good reason.

Apparently they only staff this part of the Wildlife Refuge in the summer months. So if your an older couple who likes to travel in the fall when the kids are back in school and its not hotter than blazes your out of luck!

If you love the Bible, art and history...then this place is for you. Entry is free and the chapel is beautiful. Miss Irene Malcolm spent 7 years painting all of its murals! As long as you're in the area, you must visit Meers Store and Restaurant. They're famous for their longhorn burgers and BBQ. I put together a really nice YouTube video about this place. You can find it by searching for Nash Potatoes Outdoor Show...enjoy!

Loved it. Loved the stops, love the views, the whole experience was worth the price which is FREE!! The Buffalo and longhorns were bigger than my little VW. Kindah scary but if you don’t bother them they don’t bother you.

It was something to do, bathrooms were very clean. The buffaloes and long horns were neat and we were treated to a gagle of turkeys too.

The Holy City is a man made structure using all of the red rocks in the area. It seems to depict a religious city. (I tried to find brochure on it at the gift shop and could not.) It does not take long to see it. I would love to see a Passion Play or a Christmas nativity there. The Wichita mountains are in the background, so it is quite scenic.
I would have enjoyed knowing the history behind it.
But if you are in the refugee it is worth a stop.

While driving through the Wichita mountains wildlife refuge, we stumbled on this area where the Passion Play is performed. There is a chapel plus other buildings and scenery that tell the story of the birth of Christ. Restrooms, also. A fun thing to see while you’re out looking for Buffalo.

Stopped by just since it was there. The history of the development of this "city" was quite intriguing and the shear numbers of large "cobblestone" type rocks used to build each building and station is a marvel. I saw a mix of scripture and superstition though and was not at all inspired. People left food in the chapel (bread, fruit, and a dozen eggs). I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the beautiful turquoise bodied/yellow-headed lizards on the property! The state reptile.

This is a very unique place that has a beautiful church on the premises. There is a play that is put on during the year close to Easter but I have not attended. Lots of prairie dogs around. Buildings are made of stone which is pretty neat. Just one of those places to say you have been there.

Stopped by while in the area. Don't think I'd make a special trip to see it. Nice bathrooms. Lovely chapel. They have a nice memorial for the Oklahoma City bombing. Can wander around and all over the rock sets.

Well we did not know that a play was is performed here. It was closed by the time we arrived. The buildings are beautiful. Would recommend a visit just for that. I would suggest checking the performance schedule. Appears to be about the life of Jesus Christ.

I gave the holy city a try but only spent about a half hour walking through the buildings. Luckily it's free so if you're looking for a new place to explore I wouldn't say don't go here unless you're pressed for time. This church is worth a look however most of the other buildings and areas are very ill kept and the one building with all the dusty and broken mannequins was just weird. I'm sure this place is a great setting for the Easter pageant they put on, maybe seeing that would change my opinion but as is I just wasn't impressed.
The lady in the gift shop was really nice though! And there's a couple of cute little souvenirs and collectible things in there.

very cool place - can only imagine how it transforms during the Easter season. gift shop had some cool items which were locally made. be sure to check out the Wichita Christ statue !

We almost missed this Area of the wildlife refuge. Two ladies in the gift shop told us to see the Holy City. We were blown away by what we saw. You can't get too close because it is fenced off for the passion play; however, you can get into the chapel, gift shop, and walk around a little bit. Be sure to see the huge marble statue of Jesus. The Stone came all the way from the Mount of Olives where Jesus prayed and lived. It is so moving even if you are not overly religious

So I rated this excellent but we never got out of the car. Just drove by but it was pretty neat to see and kind of creepy at the same time. Would have been to visit around Easter.

There isn’t really any staff but the scenery is magnificent! And I can’t wait to come see the Easter pageant

While in the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge we had to stop. It was an interesting visit. There were a lot of places that were roped off (manger/tomb,etc) and closed to those visiting but you could make out what they were and imagine their role in the re-enactment. They had a tiny gift shop and clean restrooms. It was interesting to read on the stone Jesus that the stone was from the same village in Jerusalem where he was crucified. We went with our 3 children, and 2 dogs. Dogs are not allowed in. This attraction took about 30 minutes.

Found this attraction on here. So we went to go visit it and wow it is very beautiful especially the chapel. It is hot out there but the giftshop offers drinks at reasonable prices. Got a surprise when we noticed several geckos roaming the rocks. All in all well worth the drive from Lawton only 15 miles of scenic wonders. Would highly recommend to anybody looking for something to do while in Lawton.

So this is free, they run on donations. It was a unique experience and you will want to check it out if you're in the area. It looks a bit run down and needs a few updates and areas restored but it doesn't take away from the beauty. They seem like they are just reopening up from covid so maybe they'll restore some of the things in the future.

Love the arcitecture. One of the best chapels i have seen in a long time. The whole city is built with area stone. Recommend going when they perform the play

Very cool experience seeing what the vision of others can create. A recreation of Old Town Jerusalem and the setting for an Easter Passion Play. Photographic historic chapel, the whole thing operates by donation, so be generous.

Cool place to visit. Makes you feel like you have traveled back in time. If you are in the area, I highly recommend stopping by to see.

I have always heard about the Holy City During Easter time and it was more than i even expected to see the story of Christ played out.

Its old and still functions. The Church is like stepping into the 1950s. It is enjoyable. I did not know about this place when i went so take a bit of time and read up on it and get the full effect.

Nestled in the Wichita Mountains is a Stone Built Passion Play Site called the Holy City. Here hundreds of watchers sit on a hill on a cold April night to watch the story of Christ unfold and build to a crescendo of his resurrection according to Christian beliefs.

Beautiful, take time to walk and enjoy each part of the scene. This is really a unique and pretty place. It was a great place to be outdoors getting exercise while walking around and seeing it all. I can only imagine how neat the Easter play is they hold here. I hope to come back and see it one of these days. I only knew about this place because we were visiting the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. It is a shame it does not have more advertisement. I imagine more people would visit if they know about it. Hopefully I will be back with my family at Easter.

We have been going there for 50 years ,more now because we have grand kids. We love to remember the old times of the pageant and the kidos just like being on stage!

Very interesting area to walk around. Great history. There’s a Buffalo on the property who roams freely. Cute little gift shop, clean restrooms. Definitely worth the visit.

This is a nice half-day trip. Many rock wall/stone sets to explore, made from local cobblestones. The chapel has been restored in the past 10+ years, with retouching of the hand-painted frescos. Worth a trip, regardless of your spiritual beliefs.

While fishing and visiting the wildlife refuge, we made a brief visit to this amazing "city" made of stones. Really interesting and worth a visit.

We were just out riding around one day and found this place. It was interesting site. Lots of history from the old west. Worth the trip!

The rocks stand tall and beautiful in color (red), but the story behind the rocks and community is what complete this place. We were amazed with the use and formation of the rocks, not what expected at all. I loved everything, every story and most of all I enjoyed the time.
We went on a very hot day, so make sure to bring water with you, there is very little shade. The gift shop is limited with cold water, but very, very pleasent people.

It is a good effort to replicate the Holy Land and the sentiment is good but it is not great. But it is a must see for the area and it will help you think of the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. But if you think of it as the backdrop for the Passion Play at Easter, you will forgive all the "hokiness".

Such good memories of long ago. Place is run down but to very moving. Church was beautiful hope this place makes it for the future.

This place is beautiful. The GPS was wrong and it took a while to figure out where we really were going. The kids had a great time exploring all the buildings. The scenery behind the buildings is amazing and fabulous for picture taking. The walk up to the buildings is short and no fee is required, but donations are welcome.

Holy City is an inspirational and peaceful place to visit. You can walk the grounds and see all the buildings made of cobblestones that have been constructed for the Passion Play that is reenacted at Easter. The chapel has been used for many weddings and has beautiful scenes on the ceilings and interior. Don't miss this great experience!!

We live very near the Holy City and always take guests to see it. It is in a beautiful area and is so historic. The chapel is beautiful with inspiring music playing. The setting of the passion play is an attraction in itself.

Didn't spend as much time as we would have liked, very pretty and peaceful area. Would love to have had more time to truly enjoy!

We went during the Easter festivals and it was amazing. They had a live play going on and the kids loved it. Being an adult it was so life like it gave me chills at times. All around great place to visit.

We vistied the Holy City when there for our son's graduation from boot camp. The place was interesting but if you're not uber religious I'd skip the tour and just roam around on your own.

Read the history of the Holy City (HC) from the website before arriving. The chapel structure, design and windows are interesting in itself. You can stroll or race through the HC. But be careful climbing the highest structure, as the stairs are uneven. We did enjoy the view of the Wichita Mountains, spiritual aspect and history. Traveling to the site is not well marked and HC website doesn’t have an address only PO. However, the HC is in the Wildlife Refuge (set GPS to refuge) and we enjoyed watching the Bison, Prairie dogs and Longhorns and museum.

For any Christian this is a great reminder and recommended for anyone. Nice at sunrise and sunset, way to hot here in the summer afternoon. It is in the middle of the wildlife refuge so you can sit under the Jesus statute and watch herds of bison roam nearby

I took my Dad (in his 80s) and two grandchildren, 5 and 9 years of age and everyone loved it. The kids got to walk around, climb and really experience the "Holy City." My grandson said to me, "Best Day Ever!" Love it when that comment is made by my grandchildren after a day we spent together. We also had gone to Mount Scott.

I took my 3 grandsons, ages 6, 9, and 10. They were fascinated with it. They enjoyed going in each building and knowing what it represented. They loved climbing the rocks to the cross. It gave them exercise plus being close to Christ.

If you're in Lawton, you definitely need to take a stop at the Holy city. It's a great display. Additionally the prairie dog fields surrounding it are better than the actual prairie dog village!

I think it looks kind of creepy. The chapel looks weird. I’m catholic and you can’t compare that to any catholic chapels.
We didn’t look at everything. We left after 10 minutes. It’s hard to describe, but it didn’t catch my attention at all.

Definitely worth going to specially during the Lent season. The drive is worth it. You pass by Meers, museum, buffaloes, long horns, and refuge where you can drive up a mountain to see the sites.

The backdrop is beautiful and the stone buildings are neat. I know it is meant for theater but I wish that they had descriptions about what each building is meant to depict so you could more easily get a feel for it as you walk through.

On a recent family visit to Lawton, OK, we returned to The Holy City of The Wichitas, and the memories of years gone by just flooded my mind. Whether a first time visitor or returning for your umpteenth time, you'll be greeted with the beauty that could only be created by God. Growing up in Lawton, the "Easter Pageant" offered our family an activity that we enjoyed together for scores of years. While you could walk the grounds and visit the exhibits in two or three hours, The Holy City is best "seen and experienced" in a half day visit with a picnic lunch that you can enjoy on the grounds or at one of the many scenic picnic areas in The Wichitas.

Very nice replica of the holy city. Clean and well maintained. A few buildings were closed along with gift shop secondary to Covid-19. Lots of good photo opportunities.

Beautiful set for the play, authentic buildings, oldest passion play on US, started in 1929. The play is put on two Saturday evenings before Easter each year. The set and stories great, just too long for young children. Glad we visited and attended. It gets cold as this is set in the Wichita mountains, take blankets and dress in layers.

We stumbled across this little hidden gem. I strongly recommend stopping if anyone is in the area. We were unable to watch the passion play but still had a great time

Every year theconduct the Easter Pageant. I had the opportunity to view the pageant and enjoyed the 3 hour long pageant. The setup is created using red stones which gives it a rustic look and will transport you to the era. Besides the eastern pageant the area is located near the Wichita Mountain Refuge area where you can enjoy the view of some long horns and buffaloes.

It is kind of a fun place to walk around and see the stages for their Easter pageant. if you are in that area swing by just for fun

We totally enjoyed strolling around looking at the magnificent representation of how things looked during the time Jesus walked this earth.

The Holy City is definitely worth a visit. My family really enjoyed visiting. It's a great place to take pictures, we spent longer than we expected there. Very happy we stopped there.

One of the many amazing places that Oklahoma has to offer to their local and tourist from around the area, the best off it is that its free and you can see so much wild life on your way there. Its a most if you happen to be around the area.

We went here just to look around and we fell in love. The place is so beautiful. So peaceful. We had an amazing time here.

Once in a lifetime experience. Really enjoyed our time there. Highly recommend if you're in the Lawton area.

Being Catholic, this place was very cool. They have an Easter vigil here every year. I think that would be cool to see.

Located on the National Game Preserve, this is the site of an annual sunrise Easter pageant. It has a nice chapel and is worth the stop when visiting the preserve.

Beautiful scenery and wildlife awaits your journey to the holy city. Amazing structures that are worthy of a trip.

This place was free, beautiful, and peaceful. We took our soldier and it was a great escape for a little while.

Stopped in while exploring the refuge. As we were pulling in the ground hogs were running around and quite funny to watch, then a bison was grazing right next to the parking area so great up close pictures (keeping our distance of course).
Was just fund to see the buildings and picturing the story they act out on the Easter holiday. I have seen a similar play in Arkansas and could guess on the areas for which part.
The most spiritual for me was the Christ of Wichita statue which is the walkway by the bathrooms. If you climb up to the side of it there is a very special stone that will pull at you - I recommend you go and see for your self.

The kids really liked it as we told the stories and significance of each building,, was our 2nd trip and still found it inspiring and have suggested it to several people going that way

I'm not a religious person, but this is a great place to visit. Love the history behind it all. We took our Grand Daughter and she had fun. We got learn about Oklahoma's history

It was interesting to see something that was started and completed in a different time. Glad we stopped to see, nice walk around the structures and could imagine the pageantry during the time when there were no grand scale productions.

This place is a must see. Any time we have family in town we always go here. Beautiful artwork. It's nice to go out and walk around on a nice summer day!

Religious or not, your family will appreciate this monument. First you get to drive down a winding road passing by roaming Buffalo, 100’s of prairie dogs and long horns along the road. Once you arrive, you get to roam the Holy City at your leisure and take as many photos as you please, of your family actively sitting, standing and walking along the trails to each monument. Highly recommended...

While living and working in Indiahoma Oklahoma, I had the opportunity to visit the holy city. It's located on the wildlife refuge. They have a great Easter pageant the evening before and the evening of the holiday. You can also see a variety of wildlife while on the refuge. My favorite was the Buffalo herds.
The wildlife refuge is located about 20 minutes west of Lawton Oklahoma. There's also some great camping and fishing site's on the refuge.

Another must see if your in the Lawton area. This is free, although they do except donations to help keep the live "Story of Jesus" running. It runs April 13-19 in 2019. You are able to enter most buildings and an easy hike around the grounds. This is a great place for the littles to stretch their legs and take in an education as well. It's very peaceful here and interesting for all ages. Don't forget to sign the guest book located in the church. The surrounding views are beautiful.

This is a group of buildings made of rocks and the site of an Easter Pageant the night before Easter ending with Christ rising from the tomb at day break. It's hard to stay awake for the pageant and ruins Easter because you're so tired.
If it's not when the pageant is on there is really no reason to go that I could see unless your a big fan of mediocre buildings built out of rocks.

It was a shot in the dark as we were heading home just stopped seen hi way signs. Really worth the drive seen Buffalo a dam and beautiful areas Free. With plenty of signs along the way

Everything was roped off, so you could really walk around. And I guess my husband and I missed the appeal. It kind of just looks like a messy theatre set.

With kids ranging from 6-19 it's hard to find something to do as a Family. The refuge and Holy City are amazing we love walking around and the chapel is so beautiful. Really worth the stop.

Such an amazing site to see! Even found the elusive collared lizard sunbathing on the stones. His color was so beautiful. Must see sight filled with wildlife:bison, long horn bulls, Prarie dogs, and elk.

We love visiting the Holy City! Such a beautiful place. The pageant they put on for Easter is amazing although very long!

I figured the kids would be bored but they really enjoyed it. We spent over an hour there. The statue of Jesus is very impressive.

We walked around this attraction with family members for about 45 minutes and that was enough time to see the whole thing and take photos. There is a walkway there paved with bricks that folks can pay to place there in memory of their loved ones. We found the one that our family had placed to honor someone years ago and it was touching to see it still there. There is a pretty little chapel there that was being set up for a wedding that weekend. It is a beautiful spot for an event. It is free to walk around, there is a donation box in the chapel.

The surrounding landscape & buildings is very much like the Holy Land in Jerusalem. It is a spiritual experience. The statue of Jesus on the hill is magnificent.

This is a large area with lots of buildings and things to see. One should plan on at least an hour to get around and enjoy the buildings, the views, and more.
We spent about three hours looking at everything and got some very nice pictures of Holy City and of the surrounding mountains.
There were a lot of people at Holy City the day we were there and it was much appreciated that people followed social distancing and wearing masks.
The gentleman in the gift shop (Paul maybe) was very informative with information to people asking questions. The gift shop is nice, but not a lot to choose from.
There is a re-enactment of some sort on Easter morning and maybe someday we'll take the opportunity to see this. We hear there are many, many people who attend this so we'll see.
Very enjoyable time!

While getting ready to leave the plains (which we didn't see much of except prairie dogs) we decided to check out The Holy City. All I can say is I'm sure the locals really enjoy the services held there since the site is beautiful. Wet took some nice photos & visited the gift shop. It was worth the trip.

Visit the church. It is so beautiful and you can get married at this church. Check out the walkway with the memory pavements. We just did a memory stone for my husband and it was very inexpensive. Walk around and watch out for buffalo "do do".

if your in lawton, this makes a nice outing for the day. Stop in Medicine Park for lunch, and then head to the Witchita Mountain Wildlife refuge, which is where this is. Saw alot of wildlife, and checked out the church here.
good time overall.

We took a spontaneous trip to the mountains, had so much fun seeing, buffalo, long horns, geckos, lizards. The Holy City was rich with history and excitement. Be sure to climb up mount Scott when you go.

An amazing visit in the Wichita Mountains and is truly represents itself as a destination of enlightening enjoyment.

We enjoyed the Holy City very much. The Chapel and Museum were well worth seeing.
I was going to buy something from the gift shop but it was closed. I would love to visit during the Easter season.

My husband and I visited after visiting the Wildlife Refuge. The Holy City is three miles from the Visitors Center at the refuge. I just didn't feel anything here. Nothing inspiring and surely not anything deeper than looking at a few rock buildings. I'm not religious but if it is beautiful and inspiring, it does have deeper meaning for me. The Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona, AZ is just such a place. This place here, was just a few building near some high tension wires. Honestly, I couldn't wait to leave.

We stopped to walk around the site where the Easter Sunrise Service is performed every year, weather permitting. Interesting set built to resemble The Holy Land in the time of Jesus. A nice setting in the Wichita Mountains. Never been there for the actual play during Easter.

Nice views great stop if your on your way to other areas of the wildlife refuge. You can tour this in about 30 minutes

We had actually visited the holy city on April of 2013. We got to explore the whole area and all of the things there...the forts, the boat, the manger, the crosses...not this time!
I guess because they were prepping for the Easter event it was all roped off. We were really disappointed that we couldn't walk around. What's really bizarre is there was an elderly man set up with a table and a karaoke machine right outside the chapel. Random people would go up and start singing. Didn't seem like the right place to be doing that, AT ALL. Then there's the "gift shop"...we walked up to it and a lady was outside smoking a cigarette. I was like gross who smokes anymore but whatever. I walk into the gift shop and no one is in there. A minute later the lady that was outside SMOKING walks in and she is the gift shop attendant!!! This was the most bizarre visit yet at the holy city. There was nothing holy about it and NO CITY.

This place is really interesting to tour, but even better if you can attend a passion play - the weekend before and Eater weekend. Built by the WPA, the play celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2015 - so it has a legacy of the past on which to build the future. The passion play is long and complete - stretching 3 hours and will stretch the audience as well. Take seats, not a blanket, for the ground on which to view is a hillside and you will find the seats more comfortable. Also, dress warm and for wind - it was the wind that got us up and moving before the end of the play. There are a lot of performers and readers - a lot and hats off to them for a job well done. The actual performance could use a bit of freshening - a better soundtrack with updated music would really help. And the play is a little long for families - many were leaving before it was over. It WAS worth seeing and the sets are spectacular - it's really hard to imagine how they work until you see an actual play...I say dress warm and go!

This 'reconstruction' is a popular place for an annual Easter pageant and is designed to maximise the viewing for that event. At other times it is more of a curiosity than a 'must see' attraction.

We arrived right at closing time and didn't get to walk thru the Holy City but still enjoyed seeing the structures from outside the fence. Was able to give a little bit better idea of what it was in biblical times for my young children...how much this world has changed. We'll go back when we can tour and hopefully be able to see the Passion Play some day.

My wife and I, as well as a couple of our granddaughters, visited the Holy City while crisscrossing the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. The various buildings are unusual in that they are used to present the Passion Play. All of the structures are built with rocks from the surrounding area. The place is pretty cool whether you are religious, or not. There is no admission and there are restrooms.
Ask for a “Discovery Trail” card that you can get stamped at any of 8 Lawton area attractions and receive a free gift. Unfortunately, we didn’t get our card stamped here, so we do not know what souvenir that is given.

Nestled in the gorgeous Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge, you'll see why this is the perfect setting for this place. Enjoy the hand painted ceilings in the chapel or roam around the set (66 acres) where they perform The Passion Play. It's a nice free place to visit.

Having grown up in the Lawton area, I have visited the Wichita Mountains many times. The Holy City / Easter Pageant area has been there since the early 1900's. My mother and her twin sister were raised in Medicine Park, and were the first "Angels at the Tomb" at the Easter Pageant. People from all over the area and the US have traveled to attend the Easter Pageant at the Holy City. Many couples have exchanged wedding vows in the Chapel.
Built from the round rocks of the Wichita Mountains, the oldest mountain range in America, one gains a sense of the areas roots. Easily walkable, it is mostly historical in interest. The Cruciviction and Resurrection Bible story was played out by live actors and animals.
A drive up Mt. Scott, viewing buffalo, and visiting Medicine Park are but a few of the local interests. Visitors from all around the world come to Meers to eat a famous Meers Burger. There will most likely be a line to get in!

Beautiful place!! So much to see and learn about it. Appropriate for any age, very well take care and they have an event every year for Holly Week.

I grew up in Lawton so I have visited the Holy City out at the Wichita Mtn Wildlife refuge many times over the years. It's a lovely location, the buildings are just so cool to see and walk around. Highly recommend you check it out at least once.

Great place to be, sometimes if fortunate youll run into a buffalo but wouldnt mind them, as they mind there own business and great history too.

A really neat experience. Walking among the stone structures was inspiring. The chapel was beautiful. Definitely worth the trip even on a cold blustery January day.

Enjoyed the refuge and park with the Holy City accessed from a turnoff the main route. Drove up to the site but did not go into the church or walk around. Site seemed kitchy, not a former mission. Drove through the parking lot and returned to the park.

The annual Easter pageant has been performed since the 1930's. The outdoor docudrama is well attended by local and out of state visitors. Nearby Lawton is well suited to support those visitors with hotels and restaurants. Fort Sill, also nearby, has a great museum displaying military weapons and equipment dating from the Indian wars to modern Times. Entrance to the post is a bit cumbersome to those without military identification but well worth it. The holy city during the rest of the year is open for visitors and free. If you squint your eyes just a bit you'll find yourself in the days of early Judea. A pleasant stopover for travelers on I35,I40 or I44 in Oklahoma.

This is a very nice place to visit. This is located right in the middle of the Wichita mountains. If you ride motorcycle this is a very nice place to ride to.

Went to the Easter Pageant as a young child and this was a magical moment. Its definitely worth a quick drive by, photo op when in the wildlife refuge.

This city is very sacred and serene. They still do the Easter Sunrise service there. It has been here since the 30's and if you are here during Easter, it is worth the trip thru through mountains to see the play.

Came across this on a visit to the Wild Life Reserve and have never seen anything quite like it. They were preparing for the once a year climax and so some areas were closed. If you are close pop in but do make a long journey to see it

My parents were married here years ago. Its a beautiful place to take your children to climb and explore the old buildings built to resemble Jerusalem. They do an Easter pagent here every year, that's the biggest in the state. And yet their bathrooms are out of order... They they need more funding, if they are going to continue to be a landmark.

We had such a ball we enjoyed everything that we saw I could tell him a little bit about Christ what they didn't know and they had lovely time spending with their great-grandmother

The holy city is a true gem in the Wichita mountains. Nothing beats the Easter Morning sunrise service here!!

We walked all around the Holy City it's especially great for taking pictures. The museum, church and bathrooms are pretty run down but I appreciate the fact this is stated to be the longest running set for the passion play. I appreciate their efforts to maintain the sets and backdrops to tell the story of Jesus Christ. They have donation bricks you can buy with you or a loved one's name that are used to extend their sidewalks. Really a unique place that is worth a stop as you go through the wildlife refuge.

WOW, when we came over the hill in the Wildlife Refuge & the Holy City was spread before us, it took my breath away. It is amazing. It was late in the evening, just before closing time so there was no one there but us. It was surreal & very respectfully quiet. I can't wait to visit in April soon & witness this spectacular event. I loved it.

It replica of the holy city was nice. It was a very hot day so we didnt climb the stairs to the top. The views great. I wish we were able to see the play!

When we arrived, there was weird music playing and the place felt kind of creepy. It didn’t feel religious at all. The buildings were neat in the way they were constructed, but it’s an odd place.

Beautiful place to take pictures and visit love visiting there year round but definitely love it at Easter time

This is in a peaceful serene sitting in the Wichita Mountain Range. Inside the Wichita Mountains National Park. Design has an eye for detail. You will recognize different venues from the Bible.
I felt as if I’m walking in the steps of ancients. Humbling. Refreshing. Comforting.

This is an interesting spot, but it was a little boring. If you are in Lawton, OK, take the time to go by it once.

WOW what an amazing beautiful place. We can not wait to come back in April for the Play. I will be coming back time and time again. I am sad it took me so long to find this place. My kids were in aww over the chapel and the history that it carried.

A feeble attempt to recreate the Holy Land on Federal property. Not sure how that happens. Church/state. Mildly entertaining.

I've lived in Lawton a few times throughout my life for a total of about 3 years. In Lawton, you will find a community of criminals- which include organized crime as well as freelancers. My ten year old sister attends Carriage Hills Elementary, where she is tormented by bullies. Murder is very common here, someone was killed at McDonalds just a few days ago. Break-Ins as well as gang threats are also extremely common here. If you walk into any store, you are probably in the midst of a criminal. If you have the intention of boarding up your home and car, and never stepping outside to see daylight so that your kids may just live another day, this might just be a great place for you!

We came out on a group of bikes interested in driving up the mountain, seeing the scenery and the wildlife. We had no clue this Holy City was even out here on the refuge. We pulled on in and decided to see what it was about. The information stated that this was the longest running Passion Play. Even though we were not there during the play, it was still very interesting to go thru and look at the set up and check out everything they had. There is a gift shop on the grounds but it was also closed while we were there. As mentioned, even if you cant be there during the play, I still think it is worth a stop just to tour the grounds.

Its a neat little place with a gift shop. It's tucked away in the wildlife refuge. It takes about 10-20 mins to see everything.

I was pretty impressed with the Holy City. The backdrop of the Wichita Mountains really makes this place feel special. The structures were very carefully created too. It would be really cool to witness the Easter festivities.

Neat place to visit. I've never seen the play but have heard wonderful things about it. I don't recommend going in super hot August like I did because it was unbearable. It's worth stopping to see.

Amazing, is the only word that I can think of. The Holy City is Surreal and very peaceful. Made me feel like I was in the mist of the biblical times. And the 3 crosses took my breath away and almost had me in tears. A must see when you are in town.

Not crowded and you can tour at a leisurely pace. The chapel was beautiful and so full of history. The gift shop made it all a little cheap, but was nice to pick up a rosary for mother.

A great stop while in the Refuge. Has clean restrooms and a gift shop. Definite stop while visiting. Interesting to see no matter what the age.

Take the time to visit here...the chapel is so cute and quaint. They have a great Easter pageant. We found the schedule in the gift shop with days and times.

truly gives you a sense of peace as soon as you step out of your car. From the paintings on the walls to the walk down to the cobblestones. Such a peaceful place to visit.

I just learned this place existed recently. We visited Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and therefore stopped at the Holy City. If you are a fan of work done in the 1930s by the WPA, it is definitely interesting to see that this too was completed by them. Basically it is a little chapel with several replicas of Christian holy sites made of red rock. The empty tomb and Golgotha were my favorites. Definitely worth a stop. And, you get to see some AMAZING prairie dog towns as you drive into the place too!

We spend a lot of time in the Wichita Mountains, which is a really cool wildlife refuge. The Holy City is adjacent to it. We stopped in to see what it was all about.
Based on someone's idea of Jerusalem, the Holy City is a place for an Easter pageant. The chapel is really small and cute. The restrooms were completely dirty, and apparently there's been e-coli in the water since 2015 so there's no way to wash your hands.
Go for a hike instead.

Loved visiting this place. It was so peaceful and beautiful. It was like stepping back in time. I wish I could be there on Easter Sunday for the play.

Very nice place to visit and lots to see in the area. I only live about 20 miles away and have been many times. It is always one of the first places I take friends and family when they come to visit. A must stop for anyone in the area. Highly recomended..

I hadn't been to Lawton in over 30 years. My mother and I decided to revisit some of the places that used to be our favorite sites. We always loved Holy City and still do.

Just a bunch of rocks. The chapel was pretty though and the Christ statue. It sits in the middle of nowhere.

What a beautiful and relaxing place. You walk among the almost another world beauty of the Wichita Mountains. Listen to the wind blow and you can hear the whispers of God. A short way from here take the drive up Mount Scott for breathtaking views.

The place is getting pretty wore down from all the visitors. Noticed new bricks were being laid with people's names on them which is nice.

Very impressed by this little diversion. One of the highlights of the trip. Very inspiring, but thankful for the gentleman who warned us to watch out for the snakes. There were 3 visible that day.

We did this as a family outing and enjoyed it all. Be sure to also visit Top of Mount Scott. Both is really Beautiful.

This Holy City is small vllage type place depicting places that is written in the Bible. It is starting to deteriorate a bit but it is still a nice place to take a stroll around, beware there are roaming Buffalo and Longhorn that are in the area at times

I have visited multiple times, sometimes with family(young children) and sometimes alone( to enjoy the quiet and solitude) and I haven't been disappointed yet. I love the little chapel, and really enjoy walking the grounds. Climb to the statue and rub the stone..... Don't know anywhere in Oklahoma to feel closer to God!

We really enjoyed walking thru this beautiful place. A must see!!! I wish that the gift shop would have been open so that we could have taken some souvenirs home with us but we took lots of pictures.

There are several buildings you can walk through and many steps you can climb to see what the actors go through each year at Easter time when they tell the story of Christ. The best part for me was reading the bricks on the walkway.

The place was kind of abandoned and only one out of six of the toilets flushed :/ the chapel was cute, but overall the place wasn't that exciting. Honestly the drive out there was the best part.

Nice and friendly staff, clean restrooms, nice little gift shop, you can walk and look around at your own pace

This is a must see when in the area. I lived in Joplin for many, many years as a child and never visited. That has been fixed and I will visit again with my family.

Some parts of this place are very scenic and beautiful despite a few tacky scenes. The inside of the church and the stones with scenic backgrounds are great.

This has always been a consistent point of interest in the heart of the Wichita Mtns Refuge. Watch-out for the bison/buffalo and their dumpings. We had to negotiate around a bull that had entered the fenced in vistor's area. We were up-close and personal.

Wasn't sure what to expect but it is an interesting stop. The interior of the church was not what I expected from the outside.

We wanted to show this to our young grandchildren on our drive through the Wildlife Refuge on the way to Mount Scott. They didn't understand it, but enjoyed the beauty.

Nice a little historic place in National Wildlife refugees with both man made and natural rocks and landscaping. They have a very nice life play at Easter Eve every years. Bring bug spray, good working shoes and sunscreen if you visit during the day.

We visited and toured two years ago and said we would return eventually for the annual Easter pageant. We returned this year, arrived early for the pageant and enjoyed the experience.
The Holy City itself is just a marvel to me. Though it's not flashy by any means, when you view it through the lens of history, it's truly an amazing endeavor.
I would recommend taking a tour of the city and scheduling your trip so that you can catch the Easter pageant.

The Holy City is a beautiful place that makes you feel like you were in the days of Jesus. Went there for Easter and they had the Easter parade and it was amazing. They told the story of Jesus in a play and it was awesome! Definitely will go back!

The Holy City didn't open till Easter but I like unique places and this was one I will be back to see in the future. The structures looked like ones in Jerusalem and you can walk around and climb walls and go into a church. I would recommend this attraction.

Phenomenal attraction! Easily spend an hour just walking around and enjoying the city. If they added some sort of dining, I believe this would be a much higher visited attraction.

Interesting place. Beautiful setting. Fun way to spend time out doors. Kids can run and play and pretend.

The Holy City is located within the National Wildle Reserve and is definitely worth your time. It is the setting for an outdoor passion play and the church is quite unique.

I had looked you up on the internet and where it had hours, you did not have them listed. When I watched a video all it said was it’s open year round until dusk and the gift shop was only closed Christmas Day. We live 4 hours away and it was a disappointment when we went this past Sunday to find out that you didn’t open up until 1:00. We were there at 10:30am. We had other things to do so we left without getting to go in and I had really looked forward to seeing it. It’s a shame you don’t list your hours so people won’t show up while you are closed. Hopefully I will be able to come back next year.

After coming to the area many times we decided to pull in and see what was here. This was apparently built as a depression era project and it provides a backdrop for the annual Passion Play put on each Easter. Enjoy this out of the way experience and let it touch you as a memory for the great sacrifice that was made for us so long ago.

While visiting my daughter at Altus AFB, she took me here. Remarkable place. While we were there, we were limited on where we could go because they were preparing for a wedding. It's a great place for a wedding. We enjoyed sitting in the giant stone chairs! and the gift shop was nice too.

We didn't stay long due to time but there was instantly a feeling of reverence. It was well laid out with the various replicas you will recognize. You could imagine you were at the real locations. I wish we could have seen the play.

This site is fantastic. A definite renewal of faith. We went on my brother's weekend pass after USA BCT graduation. A wonderful family trip, well worth it.

This is a iconic place located in the Wichita Mountains--- the Passion of the Christ is played here during the season of Easter------ took a huge amount of work doing this back in the 30's---- like taking a trip to the Holy Land------

Its a small cobblestone spot to see thats nesttled in the Wichta Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Every year a Easter passion play is held there. I enjoyed seeing it many times.

Travelling through the excellent Wichita mountains we were thrilled to find this place and a very knowledgeable local who told us that the church on site is modelled on George Washington's own in Virginia

Interesting architecture. The little shop looked interesting but was closed when I visited. Bathrooms and parking available. In Spring and Summer you can see Black-chinned hummingbirds at the hummingbird feeders.

They use this area to put on the Easter play once a year. the time it must have taken to build this and make it seem autentic is impressive....

A little run down. People were allowed to wander around and unfortunately there was graffiti inside some of the structures, as well as trash. I am sure they are probably understaffed, but it would be nice to see someone on duty outside to maybe deter defacing the area. I remember going there when I was in elementary school. Some people just disrespect relics no matter what.

We stopped because we heard it was unique. And it is. I wouldn't go out of my way to see it, but if you happen to be in the refuge - where everyone SHOULD go - swing by and take a look.

The set up is quaint and unique, not sure about accuracy. Overall the people were nice, one of the groundskeepers was publicly humiliating an employee which was not cool. He was nice to us when he greeted us, but that was kind of a turnoff. Grounds are well kept, everything was clean and neat. Passion play is suppose to be really good, perhaps keep that in mind for next spring.

This was a wonderful secret we accidentally discovered when leaving Medicine Park, someone said to be sure to see it while going to the Wichita Mt. Refuge Center. The young man in the gift shop was such an uplifting addition to the experience

While this place is nothing frilly or fancy, it is still a wonderful piece of history and worth visiting. I visit at least once a year. The chapel is beautiful on the inside. I liked the place much better when you were allowed to roam over all of the buildings but understand that due to vandalism they have had to fence certain parts off. Make sure you stop and see the prairie dog town located on the grounds right by the turn off to go into the Holy City.

My daughter, granddaughter and I were in Lawton OK for my grandsons graduation from boot camp, we all went to holy land and on the way you drive through a free range wildlife park Longhorns and buffalo are all along road right next to car and prairie dogs are abundant. The holy land has great views and is very peaceful, take in the fresh air and enjoy

The look of the place is unique. Great visual of biblical stories and symbols. Cool place to check out while you are touring the wildlife refuge!

Apparently, The Holy City of the Wichitas held the nation's longest running Easter passion play "The Prince of Peace". The native granite buildings reside against the backdrop of the Wichita mountain range half way between Lawton and Altus. A donation box for contribution since the visit is free to roam and enjoy the tranquil park.

We thought we'd stop to have a wonder around. There was nothing going on, so it was just a walk around the grounds. I guess the overall feeling was that it left us a bit underwhelmed. The chapel was pleasant inside, but that seemed about it for us. The variety of stone structures were mildly interesting.

I was visiting friends in Texas, and we came here. It was amazing and we had a blast. Would definitely come again.

Don't get me wrong it is definitely a place that was fun to go to. But overall they didn't have it very well marked so a lot of the buildings didn't make complete sense to me and there wasn't a clear walking trail. I think the best time to go would be when the play is actually going that way it makes sense.

We had a wonderful time. Absolutely loved it! Great place for a little family time! We even saw a snake nestled in the side of the building. Got exercise and good viewing.

Gorgeous stone building, replicating The Holy City in Jerusalem.
A buffalo grazing in the nearby field.
I would have loved to spend more time here, unfortunately it was put in a day trip that toured much of the surrounding area and there just wasn't enough time.
Deeply Spiritual for me.

Have visited the Holy City twice now and was amazed both times. How they built it with all those cobblestones and rocks is amazing. I can only imagine Easter morning. Nice gift shop. The bathroom however both times left a lot to be desired.

Easy to find location to see where they old the passion play yearly. I found Mount Scott on my way to see this due to the reviews. Beautiful to see the stonework with the landscape of the mountains. You can leave an optional donation.

I LOVED this hidden gem. Would love to visit during the annual Passion Play pageant as it must be very moving, I appreciate the love and sweat that went into building this amazing setting. Especially touched by the beautiful statue of Christ on the hill.

The Holy City was a very pleasant surprise! It's kind of an oasis in a very bleak landscape.
Actually, the Wichita mountain range is fairly impressive as well, IF you're already in the area.

This is a rare find. It is a mock up of Jerusalem on a lease property in the middle of a Wildlife Refuge. It has been there since about 1928. It is used for the longest running Easter Pageant in the nation. The bookstore and the Church are terrific to visit. The entire area is overlooked by a statue of Jesus made of Italian Mabel.

We took a drive to see Holy City and saw wild Buffalo right outside the entrance. They do reenactments on the weekends

This place is designed to take you away from those things that bring stress into your life. The unique structures are ideal for climbing around on, or just sitting for a while and listening to the sounds of nature around you. You'll find your breathing comes easier and the peace and serenity that surround you will fill you, if you let it.

A beautiful spot in the middle of the wildlife refuge, a must see. Great place to take beautiful photos.

Even if you only drive by, it is educational and inspiring to see the life of Jesus on the side of the hill. It is a rare religious experience seen in the confines of the Witchita Mountains Refuge.

Saw this on trip advisor & wanted to definitely check it out. I'm so glad we did. It was beautiful & very serene. The views are also amazing.

We enjoyed walking through it. Will love coming back for pagent. A lone buffalo was blocking the ladies room. Was desperately walking around him. He just stared at me like he was bored.

Had a wonderful time at The Holy City. It is very peaceful and with such a beautiful background. The gift shop had a variety of gifts and snacks and drinks as well.

This was an interesting place to visit. Would be nice to come when the Passion Play is being performed.

Family came to visit and we planned this trip to the Holy City based on other reviews. It was smaller than I thought and the chapel was nice. I wasn't impressed with the gift shop that was on site but the rest of the buildings and grounds were nice. Overall experience was serene.

Take the time to visit this city. A lot of work has gone into building this. For 94 years an outdoor Passion Play has been performed here with thousands of folks attending. You bring a chair or blanket to sit on one hillside and watch it on the other. There is a small chapel where they perform marriages, a museum of the city and a neat little gift shop. Most interesting. The surrounding mountains is absolutely beautiful.

Have been before, but got enticed back for a wedding which went fairly well with a small group of about 60. Looks like about 150 would be comfortable there. Bit of a drive, but sometimes the buffalo are out, and no doubt the prairie dogs will be active as that clan in the reserve has really taken over the place. The attraction is meant to highlight the crucifixion and the decorations and buildings are somewhat interesting. If you are in the reserve, worth the few miles extra drive over to it.

Drove past this several times before actually turning in to explore. This is well worth the visit. An amazing set, home to the longest running passion play in the US.

I grew up coming to The Holy City and the place is so enjoyable. We love looking at the round-rocks and taking photos.

We traveled to this place during an off season. I cant wait to go back when they are reenacting the Life of Christ.

This is an absolutely amazing place to see. When we walked into the entrance we went left on veteran's walk. You pass the inn, stable, mary's house, Lazarus' tomb, crucifiction hill, pilatas court, temple, Archway, Herod's court, garden of Gethsemane, chapel, Moses House (with narration), Museum gave me chills, and the gift shop. All of this from the natural stones of the witchita mountains!

A great attraction within the Wichita Mtn. Nature Preserve. You can easily spend an hour here just studying the architecture or a few quiet moments in the Chapel. The bison are free range so watch your step!

The scenery was pretty. The play is probably nice. Other than that it isn't spectacular. The handicap entrance to the chapel features a drop-off that is decidedly not handicapped-accessible, just FYI. They're putting in one of those brick walkways where you pay to have a brick engraved. They're just laying it on top of the existing sidewalk. Where they've run out of engraved bricks, it just drops off. Wheelchair accessible with a buddy, probably not by yourself.

Just went out for a drive and took lots of pictures .it is absolutely beautiful a must see the chapel is beautiful the crosses are nice the whole place is just so wonderful and very picturesque and true to believe the way it should be

Every Easter season the towns-folks put on the Passion play at the Holy City. It always ends up being cold or wet or some other weather so dress warm and pack for all contingencies. Bring butt pads or sleeping bags, etc. The show is very long but a must see since it is one of thee longest, continuously running Passion plays in the country.

It was a very nice family outing. The old church is very beautiful.. It has a quaint the souvenir shop. Someplace you can go back to continually. Very peaceful and beautiful

It was a very good trip lots of history but the girls restroom was out of toilet paper and the gift shop was closed so nothing cool to drink on the hot day

I am glad we stopped and took time to enjoy the Holy City. It was part of our trip the mountain refuge. It had some great views and was a nice place to get out and stretch our legs and let the kids run around a little. Would like to have been their for their Easter pageant. The gift shop was a nice little store with some religious shirts, rosaries, etc. Prices were average. It is worth the side trip to check it out.

This place wqa really beautiful, I loved on the way to see the holy land that the mountains were BEAUTIFUL on the way up,thank you !

Part was blocked off and the museum was smelly and if you blinked while in there you would already be outside. The church was pretty and the statute pretty neat.

Must see these structures and the annual Easter pageant here! Amazing! In the National Wildlife Refuge close to the Romantic Mountain Cabin where we stayed in the historic town of Medicine Park in SW Okla!

My friends took me around Oklahoma to see all these small towns, but my biggest surprise was to learn about Holy City in the Wichita Mountains. Worth the drive. Small, free museum. They have a chapel and you can walk around the stations outside from the various events in the life of Christ. They do an annual event for Easter. You really have to check this place out when around the area.

Everything was made out of red stone which made it different. It was a very beautiful setting which brought glory to God in a different and unique way. They have a wonderful gift shop,

I called, the week of my wedding by the way, to see if by a miracle that their chapel was open for the upcoming Saturday since we were expecting rain. The woman on the phone heard the panic in my voice and was so kind about helping me out. The pricing was great and if anything else, she would at least have a room ready for me to get ready, because there aren't many places down in the wichita's that have an indoor space for you.
When I arrived, we had a lot of trouble finding the place we were looking for and the room wasn't ready but once I linked up with her again, she was so sweet and offered me several places that I could get ready in the peace and quiet.
I will tell you that they don't lock down the property, so there were tourists everywhere even though we had rented the chapel area during that time. That was something I was glad we didn't end up having to deal with but the chapel itself is straight out of game of thrones and would have been perfect had we needed it.
Luckily we were able to go with our first plan of being married outside (in the parallel forest) and I only used this location to get dressed and touch up makeup. But they saved the day with having a facility, indoors that could accommodate our guests at a VERY reasonable price!
We will most definitely be back to see a passion play or just to explore again!

A must stop during our drive through the Wichita Mountains Wild Life Refuse. Interesting symbolic depictions of Jesus’s life on earth. Loved the art especially the ceiling art in the Church. Pets not allowed so we had to leave Bella in the truck running the engine and aircon and do a quick walk through. If parks every where can get visitors to manage pets adequately why not this place. Therefor 3 stars. Not worth a return trip.

While in the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge area we already knew we wanted to visit this place. For us we really enjoyed the chapel and the symbolic 3 crosses. The buildings look literally like what you would expect in biblical times. Every year the buildings and grounds are used for a Easter program. Could only imagine how cool it would be-never been to program. If in area make sure to check it out!

Driving through the mountains, this is a nice place to stop and see. The new bathroom pavilion was nice to use.
My parents were married in the chapel in 1975, so it was nice to see where they got married.

This is a nice stop if you are already inside the refuge. I wouldn't make a special trip though. This may have more to offer during the Easter celebration it's known for but offers little more than and interesting walk in August. There are a couple good views of the mountains while here but that's about it.

My husband and I took a trip down to the Wichita Mountain. As part of our visit we toured the Holy city. Very neat place to visit.

If you want a unique experience experience inside the Wichita mountains then you have to visit the holy city.
Built to look like the old city of Jerusalem during the time of Jesus, the holy city is such a beautiful place to visit. Every year around Easter they hold a passion play and I'm already planning a trip back to see it next year.
Follow the path throughout the city and see how Jesus lived and died. There is an older chapel with beautifully painted ceilings, the cross at calvary, ect. Such a unique place that I'm glad I got to see.
Don't forget to visit the gift shop for unique souvenirs. Also the christ statue is a short walk from the bathrooms and is really cool! I would definitely recommend a trip here! Oh and did I mention....it's free

This site is unique as it is the only attraction within a National Wildlife Refuge that has religious significance. FDR was influential in obtaining a Use Permit for the 160 acre site and the WPA built most of the structures using local stone between 1935-1938. Today no government funding is involved as all money comes from contributions and grants from the private sector. The Holy City is open 364 days a year and is free. It is the site of the longest running Easter Pageant in the world and in 2015 is celebrating its 90th year.
I was impressed by the size and number of structures including a museum honoring Rev. Wallock whose vision and dedication led to the Easter Pageant, Chapel, Veteran's Walk, temple, Crucification Hill, Garden of Gethsemane, a tower and tomb, gift shop and restrooms to name a few.
There is a gravel path which winds up the hill to the temple and around the other structures. Wheelchair users may need some assistance in certain areas, but even from the parking lot you can see everything. The museum, gift shop, and restrooms are fully accessible. Music plays throughout and there are beautiful gardens which provided a lovely scent in the air when I was there.
There is also a 12' white marble statue of Christ of the Wichitas dedicated in 1975. The man and his wife who operate the gift shop have been here for years and have participated in the pageant. He was kind enough to tell me lots of info on the pageant even though I was not there when the pageant was being presented.
I really enjoyed the hour or so that I spent here. You really must see it to appreciate it as it is amazing in its size and beauty (the area was chosen because it was felt the terrain was similar to that where Jesus lived).

we drove to the Holy City and decided not to get out due to my handicap - I walk with a cane and I don't do uneven surfaces. We could see it from the car window and we were glad we did. They say they have a passion play and that would have been good to see - amazing rock houses and formations which are visible from the car - saw many families walking and taking pictures --since it is in the Wildlife Refuge then it's worth the stop

We were there on Sept 9. I liked the place and ofcource the chappel.
The stone architect is very good. Must to see and hangout in Wichita mountain.

My son and I really enjoyed touring The Holy City! It is breathtaking. Just wish I had taken my umbrella with me for some shade from the sun.

They tell me that this place has really changed from the old days, but it was still a very nice place to visit. We only drove through but we are glad that we did.

This site is somewhat interesting, and is worth the time. They do a Easter reenactment there, but, we didn't see it because we visited in December. The drive to get there was a bit desolate, but somehow beautiful in it's own way. We had hoped to learn more about the origin of the City.

The so-called "Holy City of the Wichitas" is the least interesting part of visiting Medicine Park and the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. This "Holy City" sort of resembles a kitschy roadside attraction on Historic Route 66. Built in the 1930's to resemble someone's vision of Jerusalem, and to provide a staging area for a yearly performance of the Passion Play, the architecture is somewhat peculiar, but for us it was hardly worth more than a stop of a few minutes while driving through the spectacular Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

This place is a must see for anyone going through southwest Oklahoma. It is located just north of Lawton-Ft. Sill in the Wichita Mountains. There is an Easter service held every year that is worth a planned trip to see.

Probably wouldnt drive just to see the Holy city but its pretty good.the whole area, medicine park and the wildlife refuge makes the drive worth it.

Nice to walk around and take pictures, really nice view of the mountains and spotted some prairie dogs!
There is a gift shop but it was closed on our visit.

It was okay here, just a bit boring and not really anything amazing unless you're religious and enjoy these things. Architecturally and otherwise unassuming.

We just happened to drive up on this place. Got out to see what it was and were happy we did.
The next time we visit the refuge we plan to spend a little more time looking around.

The Holy City is a series of rock-built structures that are primarily used as props for the Easter show. Some members of my family really love this place. I have always found it creepy, especially the little museum that looks like a Klan convention, and smells like pee. However, they put on a great show at Easter. I rated it average because of the mixed experience I have had there.

Visited this place after the Mt. Scott experience. A good place to see for some good and creepy views.

Very interesting buildings. Lots of opportunities for a photographer as the buildings are beautiful. Gift shop too.

The Holy City is located just around the corner from MT Scott in the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Reserve. The Holy City is my favorite spot to visit on the refuge and my family visits here often. The scenery is breathtaking and the terrain is said to be much like the that of the Holy Land where Christ was crucified. You can see a large white statue of Jesus Christ looking over the entry way to the Holy City and you can hike up to look more closely. There is an annual Passion Play which is held on both palm Sunday and Easter Eve. You can walk thru the entire pilgrimage Christ traveled and be up close an personal with Jesus and what he went thru when he was crucified. The buildings are rugged and built to stand the test of time, weather and thousands of visitors climbing all around and on them. If you are looking to find peace and serenity, or just wanting to hike around this is a must visit site. There is an old church you can visit and also a wonderful gift shop on the site. The history in this location is amazing and you will not be disappointed regardless of your reason for visiting.

The Holy City of the Wichitas has been a part of the refuge for decades. Each year at Easter, the passion play of Christ has been enacted for more than 80 years. This is a must see location in the Wichita Mountains. The refuge itself is a hidden treasure in Oklahoma and the Holy City is certainly a golden nugget.

This venue shares a lot of history in not only Lawton and surrounding area but also in the life of Jesus. This venue is truly amazing when they put on their Easter or other shows. The city is lit up and they tell the story using actors and actresses. It is truly phenomenal.

A recreation of the life of Christ. Have a live show on Easter Sunday and the Saturday before. Great stop while on Refuge. Many buildings that are part of the Easter pageant to explore.

This is a replica of Jerusalem around biblical times. it is interesting to see, especially in Oklahoma.

We went to The Holy City on vacation and it was one of the best parts of our vacation. It really gave a sense of peace and comfort walking around looking at all the scenes. It gave us a sense of actually being there during the time. Truly breathtaking views and so much to see.

Beautiful place to visit any time during the year. I wish I could visit during the Lent Season, but November 2022 will do. i love the small church, and the significance of all the areas available for viewing and walking. It reminded me of the time I went to Athens, Greece and I could feel touch a lot of the columns, monuments, rocks, etc., which were built by hand, and thousands and thousands of years ago. You must come here with more than a couple hours to view everything, and visit the little shop, which is very welcoming. This is an excellent place for a family visit, before going back home, and after a visit to the Wichita Mountains and Wildlife Refuge.

I actually remember the WMWR back when I was nine years old or so. I never got closer to The Holy City until today chasing a geocache. I went to their store and talked to two very charming people who worked at the store. The setting is well done and seems to show the Biblical narrative back to at least Noah's time. To be a pageant this long, one must assume it's good. It would be interesting to see it,

A wonderful place to bring your family for a day's outing. Beautiful!!! Here you can see a beautiful piece of Oklahoma's history, well preserved!

Beautiful chapel and amazing craftsmanship in the rock formations depicting Christ. Possibly a little better when not too hot. Lots of walking on gravel/sand pathways. Really unusual to see in Oklahoma hills.

A beautiful place to visit. We have never been here during the Easter Pageant but I hear it is spectacular. Even if you don't go during Easter just take a day to go explore the sight.

Been here many times, and have seen the Easter Pageant back when it was the Sunrise Service. We used the costumes when i was a kid in our school Christmas program. Long time ago. But worth seeing, more a giant outdoor stage set but has a cool chapel. And located in the wonderful Wichitas, the main reason to go there.

My bff from high school and I took a little trip down memory lane.... we LIVE the holy city and the wildlife refuge.

Did not know what to expect. Basically the set for the outdoor annual easter "passion play". Husband remembered seeing the play 50 years earlier. Sitting on the hill. Picturesque red rocked buildings. Gift shop had snacks and rosaries and misc crosses, jewelry, etc. not wheelchair friendly. I have bad knees and did not walk through everything. No fee. Am glad we stopped by but would not call it a must see.

This was an interesting visit. But a little dissapointing. Hours of operation open at 10am. But acess is limited until later in the evening when actors arrive. Had I known this I would have planned our trip a little differently.

Must see I loved seeing how they use to live many years ago. Absolutely breathtaking. As you go there look for the wild buffalo & the Prairie dogs to see the wildlife running free is awesome.

Very interesting and beautiful in a way. There is an old church where people can get married. Very old and authentic. The Passion play is peformed here at the Holy City every Easter for 2 weekends in the evening. You bring blankets and sit on the hill to watch the play of the Easter story peformed by actors who volunteer.

Very interesting stop in the Wichita mountains. Built entirely from rocks. Lovely break from driving.

We enjoyed our time at the holy city. It is beautiful. The passion plays must be amazing. It is a nice walk through the life of Jesus. Make sure you wear good hiking shoes here as it is rocky.

We didn't know about The Holy City prior to our visit in Lawton. It is unexpected little treasure found in the Wichita Mountains. There is a church, gift shop and restrooms (Thank You Jesus!) Then you can walk through replica settings of Jesus' life; from his birth to the crucifixion. There is an older gentleman working in the gift shop that is a bit gruff. I don't think he's mean spirited, just a bit rough around the edges. Kinda reminded me of my Papa. :)

Great place to visit and recall Biblical events. After COVID is gone, I would love to see the place come alive with actors and portrayal of Biblical events. Souvenir shop and chapel available for small weddings. Place is run down, but lots of potential still exists.

Quite bizarre for anyone not from the area. They preform a Easter ceremony here for the death and rebirth of Jesus. Sounds like a perfect time not to be in the area. It's on the creepy side

This is a good place to stop in the park to take pictures and view the Jesus of the Wichita's. The site has a small church that gives you a New Mexico type vibe. It will not take very long to get through the stages of the cross and it's time well spent as you get to the explore the park as a whole.

It was snowing the day we visited the wildlife refuge and the Holy City was closed. We plan to return in the spring of 2015 to walk through this area. If you get to this area be sure to drive though the Wildlife Refuge, we saw a lot of wildlife and had a great time getting up close & personal to the buffalo. Topped the hill and two were standing in the middle of the road, since they were larger than our vehicle, we waited patiently until they decided to move.

I have visited the Holy City many times. It's a beautiful place and children like to go there. (at least the children I know). The caretakers are making improvements often. They hold an Easter pageant there were they act out the story of the resurrection of Jesus. I have not been fortunate enough to be able to go to this, but I hear it's wonderful and many people go every year.

Enjoy learning about the life of Jesus, taking pictures all along the way. Visit the church on sight and enjoy the view of the refuge.

My wife son and 2 grandchildren visited the Holy city. This was my wife and myselfs 2nd time this year we had visited the Holy city Easter Sunday for their reserection play so beautiful. This trip however was for the grandkids they enjoyed all the things they could climb on and see as well as the giftshop and wishing well. We had a great time and my grandchildren aren't the easiest too please.

Great visit with The Grands, ages 7&8. Construction is very unique and similar to those found in Israel.
Free to run and make your visit fit your family situation. Also very nice gift shop.

while visiting, little ones like to explore....a learning experience to relate biblical history to the different enities located with the "Holy City"
Try to plan your travel to see the Easter Pageant every Easter

My mother and I had talked frequently about visiting the Holy City. She had visited several times when she was a child and wanted to return for a visit. The Holy City is definitely worth the visit. Some of the areas were roped off as workers prepared for the upcoming Easter Pageant. The gift shop was open and had a variety of goods that were actually quite appealing. The areas were well kept and views were gorgeous. I would absolutely visit the Holy City again.

Great little area that was totally different to anything we had seen on our travels! Well worth a stop

There isn't a lot here. The actual plays are cool, but for just a regular day don't bother. The whole place is falling apart. It is a good place to stop for a restroom break if you're out in the refuge and need a stop close by.

Interesting to see another of the WPA projects still in use. The sits on land of the Wichita Wildlife Preserve. The longest running outdoor Easter Passion play in the country. Nice gift shop.

If you are of the Christian faith, this offers spirit of a pilgrimage with opportunities for contemplation. I certainly don't think one has to be Christian, though, to appreciate this quirky attraction. I imagine it would hold interest for anyone who studies world religions or biblical literature. Or, if you are a modern art buff, the Holy City reminded me of a modern art installation out in nature, not unlike the outdoor installations in the art mecca of Marfa, Texas. This is unusual enough that you won't regret seeing it. I think it would be most striking closer to sunset. Plus, since it's in the Wildlife Refuge, you are also getting an opportunity to see the Refuge.

Oct 2017
In the most unexpected place are these amazing stone buildings, including a chapel with a magnificent fresco on the arched ceiling.
Site of the Easter passion play for over 90 years.

This is such a beautiful place. It is an replica of Jerusalem. The whole area is great. There is no admission fee just a donation box. However its unfortunate there sewer system needs repair and the are in threat of closing. That would be ashamed. They have a gofundme page for help. Anyone who visit or cherish this place it would be nice to donate at least 5.00. They have been doing passion play for 90 years.
Worn down
So disappointed that this place hasn't been keep up... We were first here years ago and saw the play at Easter time, it was really neat and the gift shop had a decent selection. Now- there was very little in the gift shop and the outside was really written down and weedy
