1 of 19 Best Attractions in Alexandria Bay

One of my favorite places. I have been there three times. Visited the Wellesley Island State Park, Keewaydin State Park, The Boldt Castle. I also took the two hour two nation Uncle Sam boat cruise which was amazing. Once I also took the one hour cruise. one can just take the ferry to the Boldt Castle. There are great hotels around the area, We spent one night at a motel. Though I did not participate in any water-activity but there are several options for those I believe.

always enjoy a stay in 1000, went to a concert at the pavillion, so good, Ferguson and Rogers Band. had a great time, they are so talented and so patriotic, fun night, alot of fun

My husband and I went to the Thousand Islands for our 27th anniversary and had a fabulous time!
We drove to Alexandria Bay and then rented a boat for three days which allowed us full access to the St. Lawrence River and everything in the surrounding area.
It is a beautify area with lots to see, especially Boldt Castle (separate review).

Fun place to visit! My husband and I went to the Thousand Islands after hearing our friends say how much fun it was. We booked a three day, two night stay right on the waterway. It either was cloudy or rained on us but we had a blast! The rain did not deter us at all! The fog made for some great pictures with the barges. Walked all over town, took a "Castle" boat tour in the rain with a great tour guide to explain the islands. Had a great time, highly recommend going!

The 1000 Islands area is one of the most beautiful places I have ever traveled! The water is so clean and blue, the hiking on Wellsley Island provided breathtaking vistas of the St. Lawrence and the many islands with a private home sitting on them. I had never heard of 1000 Islands prior to the trip, so glad we just happened to find them

This was my sixth time touring the Thousand Islands and Boldt Castle. Never get tired of it. It is also great to see the progress they are making restoring the castle.

If you love boating and nature and natural beauty, this is the place for you! I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to 1000 Islands. It was so relaxing taking boat tours and seeing the islands. I would love to live here and own my own boat! I was really impressed with the town of Sackets Harbor - it was beautiful! I thought it was much prettier than Alexandria Bay and Clayton. Altho I did enjoy the walk along the water at sunset in Clayton, that was stunning. And Uncle Sam's in ABay is the best for boat tours!

One of the most beautiful places upstate NY has to offer. Has everything from fishing to shopping. We toured around the many islands and enjoyed watching many different species of wild animals.

The 1000 island region is home of much history and year around activities, for both fitness lovers and families.

We came here with our tour,we had lunch first on the boat which was delicious. Then when we were half way through the heavens opened so we had to see everything from inside the boat, the part that we did see was beautiful. The boat staff were very pleasant and the tour lasted about 2 hrs with the meal. The place itself is lovely souvenir shops and restrooms.Worth a visit if you are in the area.

We walked all 3 bridges in TI going into Canada from USA. They are all free!! #1 is in USA and can be walked from Collins Landing visitor center. High bridge, view so-so. btw, You don't walk the bridge located at the border crossing that Google labels TI bridge. After you cross the border into Canada, Bridges #2 & #3 go over Constance & Georgina Islands. They were the most fun to walk. Great views of the river and small islands. For access, we parked at the shops located just past the 1000 Island Skydeck, also in Canada. Tip-When on the bridges, cover your ears when tractor trailers go bye! Bridge walks not good for kids due to closeness of traffic and height of bridges.

Stopped here for a night on the way to Montreal from Niagara Falls. Well worth the time and don't forget to take a boat ride. Boldt Castle was beautiful.

beautiful area. Well worth visiting if you are in the area. Make sure you visit the Castle while there. Wonderful sandwich shop there also.

It is a beautiful excursion to do by boat, Boldt Castle is also very beautiful and very well presented, the boats leave about every half hour, there are audio guides and everything is well documented.

Abay is a great little village and keeps getting better. All kinds of shops, restaurants, places for kids (beach, playground), and night life. Adults need to visit the Dark Island Distillery.

The historic town of Alexandria Bay has a quiet charm, scenic beauty, and many gift shops and restaurants. To truly enjoy the beauty of the area a pontoon boat is ideal. Swimming and paddle boarding in the crystal clear waters is amazing. Visits to Boldt Castle on Heart Island and to Singer Castle are both must sees but there are many other fabulous islands to see while traveling on the St Lawrence River. Watching the large freighters coming through the channel is also very interesting. Evening cruising, fishing from a dock, watching the sunset, and grilling s'mores makes for the ending to a perfect day

This was a very informative tour. Never being out in this area I was surprised to find this. Never head of this area and seeing it was amazing. Wouldn’t have thought you could fit such big houses on such little islands. Great information shared by tour guide. Will do this tour again if in area.

This was an unexpected place to visit, I am so glad I did, I saw the advertisements on the back of a tourist magazine and I took the four hour drive from Niagara Falls to see the natural beauty. It was clean air, clean water, just beautiful!!! Well worth the drive.

We had a lovely visit to Alexandria Bay, NY on the fourth of July. The town is so cute with lots of shops and restaurants. We took the boat trip around the waterway and to Boldt Castle which was terrific. We stayed until the night's fireworks over Boldt Castle and they were spectacular. Highly recommend a trip! Next time we will try to stay in one of the hotels which looked very nice.

Beautiful region with amazing cottages and boating. We enjoyed a few days at the local KOA and touring. The fireworks cruise and castle cruises were both a lot of fun. Probably renting a boat next time

We have seen lots of beautiful places – we were very surprised to find one of the most beautiful places in the world was so close by. We drove around lake Ontario on the Canada side, and we were just in awe when we crossed the bridge and saw the islands. We drove a portion of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail stopping at lighthouses and other scenic views on the way. We also did the Uncle Sam’s two nation tour. It was such a beautiful area we will definitely go back. Should be on your bucket list!

Spent most of my summers on the river at my grandparent's camp and then our own camp. Let the camps go since we didn't own the land and things changed in the park. Now my mom and I go camping again in the state parks. We spent last August doing some site seeing, touring castles and paddling for a purpose. Those are things that you don't do if you have a permanent camp so it was fun! Swimming, kayaking and fishing are the best and no one can beat a River sunset!

Visited the thousand islands for the first time with my husband this past weekend. He had been in Alexandria Bay 50 years ago as a little boy and wanted to see it again. We had a very nice time. Loved the Harbor Hotel in Clayton, much less the Bonnie castle in Alexandria Bay but overall the thousand islands are definitely a place to visit. Alexandria Bay is a very cute and quaint little town. Many of the Islands are beautiful when seen from the boat (we took the Uncle Sam boat tour... recommended as well), will come back to visit the Singer castle that we did not have the time to visit this time. All in all highly recommended.

The Thousand Islands area, of NY, is absolutely beautiful in any season. Take the longer cruise through some of the most beautiful islands and learn the history of this area. There are great parks to have a picnic or camp. There are also some cute places to shop and eat. Clayton, NY has more upscale eateries and shops than Alexandria Bay. But, both places have their charm. I love going to Boldt Castle and learning about the love story that brought that castle to this area. It is easy to get to and the fee is very reasonable. If you can, rent a place on the main St. Lawrence seaway and see the beautiful large ships passing through. During the holidays, many of these are lit up with lights! I would recommend this area for a family get away. A stay of 2-3 nights is probably sufficient to get a good take of the area!

My husband and I had never been to 1000 Isl before. What an amazing place! Lots of bars, great restaurants and great music. We went for our anniversary and will definitely return!

We just went for the day! It was a beautiful day and plenty to see. Bolt Castle was very interesting and we were there for a couple hours. The Uncle Sam boat tour was also very interesting the guide made it fun he had a great sense of humor. The boat ride was for 1 hour. They have several shops for everyone. We had a fun day.

Awesome little town to visit. Uncle Sams boat cruise is well worth it to see the river and Boldt Castle. Shops were really cool to visit and we got some great fudge. Perfect day trip.

Such a beautiful part of the country and in the summer so much to do on the water. Fishing, boating, swimming, floating and just enjoying all the river has to offer. We have been going up her for years and we are always sad to leave "The River".

We have traveled to the Alexandria Bay, NY area many times in the past 30 years. There is always something to do (in the summer months) and it is one of the most pristine, beautiful places imaginable for swimming, sunning, boating, fishing, sight-seeing. We recommend renting a boat (if you don't own one and you have a license) or taking a tour on any one of several tour boats. Visit Bolt Castle, Singer Castle, the Clayton Antique Boat Museum, any of which you could easily spend a half day on. Try renting a room/house/whatever lodging on the water so you can sit on your dock and watch the boats go by all day. A huge treat is always seeing the "big boats"---oceangoing tankers and other massive vessels that use the St. Lawrence shipping channel to travel from the Atlantic inland to all the Great Lakes. At trip to the Thousand Islands is sure to provide many wonderful memories.

Thousand Islands is a great way to spend a holiday long or short! There are plenty of water tours offered including Boldt Castle. (It's an American Island) If you want a 360 view head up to the thousand Islands tower which stands at more then 400 metres with three levels of observation. Check out some of the restaurants! Thousand Islands is a great place to explore and a photographers dream!

This was our first visit to the 1,000 Island area in the USA & Canada. We will return ! This is a nature lovers dream with much wildlife, clear waters & beautiful landscapes. The little town is quaint with a few shops & restaurants. The welcome center is a must - full of helpful information.

Thousand Islands is a beautiful area on the St. Lawrence Seaway. There is so much to see, and the area is very relaxing. One may take a boat tour, charter a boat, or bring their own boat to explore the islands and river. There are so many gorgeous homes on both Canadian and U.S. sides of the seaway. One could spend hours or days out on the river.

The warm summers in the Thousand Islands are idilic. Cruising the quiet channels by boat, anchoring in a bay for a swim, kayaking the out-of-the way places, watching the ships glide by...there are so many ways to enjoy this water-centric area. And while the winters can be very cold, they are still beautiful as well.

An absolute beautiful place to visit with tons of things to do. The boat trip and the boldt castle was better then I had even imagined

Beautiful place to relax and enjoy the scenery. We had a nice time on the Uncle Sams Boat tour, We stopped and saw Boldt's Castle, we got to imagine what it was like to live in a big castle. Definitely worth a trip to the islands if you want to relax and enjoy the water.

This is a very lovely part of the USA that makes for a great family vacation.. they have a little for everyone. fishing, shopping and castles!!

We drove around the area in late October. Most everything was closed up because the season was over. The wind was blowing like crazy. It is still a beautiful area to explore. I bet it is mobbed in season. If you have ever been to Maine it is similar to OOB.

So much to do and see in the 1000 islands. Loads of history, great to experience as a family. Slower pace, gorgeous surroundings. Highly recommend the getaway.

There are many awesome islands with different views. Each island has unique architecture. Some are castles and some are beautiful houses, villas and small homes

Consumer service was super, bar & food on the boat.... history lesson of the islands. Remember your passport and US dollars they have gift shops and ice cream at the Castle

Take the boat tour and see it all! Uncle Sam's has a nice 2 hour tour and it is well narrated. Big boat with three levels lots of seating. The have a snack bar and a BAR! What a nice day out on the river.

I think I've only scratched the surface of the area known as the Thousand Islands. There are actually around 1800 islands-many privately owned. You can hop along the St. Lawrence driving from town to town, or tour the islands on a boat. There are historic homes, museums, antique boats, dining and shopping, but more importantly, the 1000 islands area has one of the most beautiful natural attractions on the planet- a powerful river dotted with islands of towering pines, historic mansions and two countries!

I have visited it many times, first in the late eighties. Than a few weekend trips in the late ninities, than a long gap until now.
Just so many things to do. Rent a boat for a day and go exploring.

The Thousand Islands are wonderful. There is a lot to do and see and lots of places to eat and just enjoy nature.

This was fun and informative - I do suggest that you take the earlier boat tour so that you have enough time to visit both castles. Boldt Castle is AWESOME! and you want to have enough time to see it plus the boat house and playhouse and grounds - we ran short of time and I wish we would have had more time there. The story behind Heart Islant (Hart) is pulls at your heart strings and it makes you appreciate the amount of work over the last 40 years that has gone into restoring the entire place. You should read about the story behind this magnificent property before you go - and it is one of the cheapest attractions you can get into anywhere! Well worth the $8!

This is a stunningly beautiful area and we enjoyed seeing more of it on a boat tour with Uncle Sam Boat Tours out of Alexandria Bay (highly recommend this group). We enjoyed watching freighters go to (you can check to see where they are online) and watching the boat traffic as well as checking out all the various islands and beautiful homes.

I went with my Family...They give you boat tour to all the islands from outside except Boldt Castle...If you wanna explore it, you have to pay for it additional otherwise you can skip it. But if you really are a Castle Fan then you must visit Boldt Castle...it’s spectacular!...also beautiful views from both countries...:)

A brief visit but so much more time to truly immerse myself into the culture and lifestyle of the Thousand Islands . Captain Thompson's resort was a wonderful choice for our lodging. Balcony looked across the seaway to the Boldt Castle. Staff was friendly and helpful. Checkin was a breeze.

We spent four nights in Alexandria Bay. We took two sightseeing ferry tours to see both Boldt and Singer Castles and also Millionaires' Row. If you own a boat, this is a fabulous place to visit. The views on the water are breathtaking! If you love fishing this is also the place to come. There are lots of restaurants, shops, museums and also wineries. Lots of hotels to choose from or you can also go camping. Great place for a summer or early fall vacation!

This was a very nice boat ride to take but it's a lot of houses and not much else. Just not what I was expecting but still very worth seeing.

I’ve been to different islands in my travels but this one was extraordinary because there’s lovely houses or buildings in every island other than a castle . The boat ride from Canada to Alexandria Bay was fun although it’s this time of the year and wind so chilly the restaurant near the castle was our Saviour for hot chicken soup . The drive to the harbor for the cruise was scenic as well . Worth the journey . If you have US visa you can hop off in Boldt Castle and the pretty town of Alexandria .

Area is very picturesque with plenty of lodging and places to ea. The Boldt castle is nice to see. Not much for children to do

Beautiful area! We went memorial day weekend and it was great. No crazy traffic with just a bit of a crowd by the bay with the boat tours. They have a few wineries and distilleries in the area. I highly recommend dark island spirits it's a must visit. The area also offers scenic boat tours and tours of boldt castle, singer castle and rock lighthouse. They also have plenty of state parks and hiking. You can camp at grassy point. The bay area has options to eat and pubs. A small zoo and if you stay in Watertown you have access to chain restaurants, low rate hotel rooms and chain stores as well as a mall. The small towns have small museums with local history. You can also walk the thousand islands bridge for great views and to be able to say you walked to Canada. The bridge is a bit scary for some so read about it first. It's free to walk. They also have a few speedways in the area if you'd like to catch some local stock car racing!

Had a wonderful time. Spent 2 days there. Definitely not enough time. The shops were awesome as was the boat tours to the island's. Would go back in a heart beat

I had the special, which was prime rib. It was cooked perfectly and was delicious. My husband had perch per our servers recommendation, he said it was fantastic. Our server was personable and very efficient. It was moderately priced. We will definitely come back to Riley's the next time we are here in A Bay.

The area is so beutiful that it made me want to come back and spend more time in the area in future family trips.

Though I'm from Pennsylvania, I had never been to the 1000 Islands before. Wow! Look what I missed! I loved it! I love being around water. There are lots of nice places to stay. Visit the castles. Take a boat ride! Watch the water traffic go by. I plan on coming back next year!

It started with a sailing article and my desire to get my wife on calm water. We did go kayaking on the Saint Lawrence River that runs through the 1000 Island State Park.

I'm completely amazed that anybody but afraid of these anything less than excellent. Diffently worth the trip. Pay the money for a water boat or they can take you from island to island and even take you to some of the Canadian side islands as well. its just absolutely breathtaking!

What can I say, I was captivated by the peacefulness and beauty of this place. I targeted it as my next family vacation destination. Anyways don't miss it!

We took a boat cruise of the 1000 Islands. The islands, homes, boat houses, were all beautiful. Enjoyed learning the history of the area. Highly recommend this to everyone!

One of the most beautiful areas I have ever visited. Take tome to do a boat tour and visit Boldt Castle. We left our home at 5 am in order to do the a boat tour.

Wife and I had a great time. Weather was peefect for the past 5 days. The boat tour of the islands was nice. The ride over the bridge to Canada to go up the 1000 Island Tower was great.

This is a very pretty area of upstate New York! The views are amazing, and the area is very pretty! Stop by and see it!

You should definitely see some of these over 1800 islands and the beautiful houses on these islands.

Loved our recent trip here! There are great places to stay and eat while there are countless things to do!

great place to enjoy kayaking & boating among the many islands. amazing diversity between super mansions and simple cottages on islands that vary in size from teeny tiny to huge.

Simply amazing... Worth your hard earned cash, just simply beautiful and I can say cute to see a house on top of a small island

A recent short vacation to 1000 Islands and Boldt Castle makes me want to share information here.
If your trip includes both sides of Canada and States, then going to Boldt Castle is easier from Alexandria Bay in New York State. The parking lot for tours to the Castle is big enough and free, it takes less than 10 mins to arrive at Heart Island which is where the Castle is.
The cruises on both sides are nice and a bit different also. The one departing from Alexandria Bay passes the Heart Island and you can see more small islands with pretty buildings on them. The one from Kingston on Canada side allows you to see more natural scenes, wide open water, trees, windmills and feel lots of fresh breeze but you can't see the Heart Island since it is at the other end of the passage. I believe some of the cruises departing from Gananoque, Ontario, may pass the Heart Island also but I haven't gotten a chance to do it yet.
Anyway, 1000 Islands and Boldt Castle are great places to spend time during the summer on either the US or Canada side.

Awesome Gem on a place and well worth the visit and time to see. We were lucky and had splendid weather.

I was so excited to vacation in the Thousand Islands with my husband one week this August - What. A. Disappointment. Our friends and family raved and raved about Alexandria Bay, so that is where we based ourselves. We stayed at an airbnb (horrible, but that's another story), received TERRIBLE customer service in nearly every restaurant we went to, and were just overall very disappointed. The scenery is amazing, there's certainly no doubt about that, however there are amazingly beautiful spots all over the country, and even all over New York State. The best service of the whole trip we received by the 17 year old check-out girl at Price Chopper. We would not go back to the Thousand Islands. Obviously many others have a great experience as evidenced by stories we have heard and reviews we have read, however that was not our experience.

We took a boat ride up and down the st. Lawrence River and got to see all the different Islands what a nice place. The kids had a great time riding on the boat although this time of year I was kind of a little on the chilly side but we really enjoyed it

A fun spot to vacation and the fishing is great. Most of the food in the restaurants is pretty good too. No chain fast food in the area and we didn't miss it. Beautiful area of the USA.

This was our first trip to the Thousand Islands area of New York. It's breathtakingly beautiful in July! There are so many islands and homes to see in the river. The USA side and the Canadian side of the river offer interesting sites to see and stories to hear about. We took a guided tour and enjoyed the entire 2 hours tour learning about the history of the region, the two nations, and the river itself. This is well worth a visit!

This should be on everyone’s one bucket list, NOT.
If you are a person who supports kindness, racial equality, BLM, the LGBQIA+ community, etc., etc., DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT visit. Yes the views are amazing, the history interesting, and the castles are enchanting, but it stops there. The local stores carry anti gay t-shirts and bumper stickers that are truly offensive, and pro Trump shirts are in abundance both, on the rack, or people wearing them.
We are a racially mixed family and are trying to get out of our reservations because we do not feel safe here since barely anyone has made us feel welcomed.
I have never written a review like this before and I hope I never have to again. When did the North become the Deep South.

We always go here sense I was a child and now taking our kids it’s something special for everyone young and old and in between I love the Thousand islands many things to just look at so pretty and peaceful we will always come back

We like to just sit and watch the river (and the world) go by. So peaceful. Lots of ships to watch, as well as fishermen, boaters. Beautiful scenery, lovely area.

The 1000 islands is beautiful. The minute I arrive there with my family I take a deep breath and instantly feel relaxed. We live in the state of NY a few hours away but when we arrive in the islands it always feels like we are somewhere exotic and different.
We love boating around the river, looking at the pretty views and the cool islands. We also enjoy anchoring our boat and swimming. We're on/in the water daily when we visit over the summer.
We are usually lucky enough to visit around July 4th and the fireworks in Alexandria Bay are awesome! They shoot off the fireworks near Boldt castle and it is quite a show. Both the town of Alex Bay and Clayton are booming the week of the 4th with lots of tourists and people vacationing.
Visiting the town of Clayton is also one of our favorite things to do. There are so many cute shops and restaurants to visit. I always stop at Bella's for coffee and RiverRat cheese shop to stock up on our favorite cheeses. My husband and I enjoy stopping in the the Johnston House in the evening for a drink at the outdoor bar. And there's a huge playground in town that our kids love to go to.
We look forward to our trips to the 1000 islands each year. We go three times a summer and the beauty and fun never lets us down!

We spent a week-end here mostly on business but did have some play time as well. This area is full of eye candy. There is one georgous vista after another. There are plenty of entertainment options available including, fishing, boating, sightseeing, dining - it's a great vacation spot.wiuld go back in a minute.

I love the thousand islands! We went on a dive with Finger Lakes Scuba to an old sunken coal ship on the St Lawerence. Just walking down the street with all the cute shops. The water is so beautiful and town is super nice. So much to soon the thousand islands. Swan bay rv resort is awesome there too.

We were cleaning up, painting, clearing land, getting ready for the wedding on August 4th. We had a great time.

Be sure to take a boat ride to best see many of the islands and learn the history of the area. Beautiful scenery and local homes.

Thousand Islands in Alexandria Bay is situated at the Canada–US border, in the Saint Lawrence River. It's a wonderful place to visit, if you are on your way to Niagara or Canada. A guided boat ride in the river is a must do activity here, that takes you to many of the thousand islands while telling you stories related to those islands. I believe this place can be visited throughout the year. I visited during summer and I felt like it is the best time to visit, while you should positively carry your sun screen lotions.

Thousand Islands is really lots of pieces of lands surrounded by water. Obviously we didnt even covered a quarter of them. What we saw was beautiful. Perfect time we went because it was not cold or hot. It was memorial weekend. Heck I got to touch lake Ontario and the water was freaking cold and to my amazed I saw people scuba diving. Crazy people I say. We went to Alexandria Bay and we walked around those awesome shops and ate outside by the bay. What an experience? We recommend it!

The 1000 islands are beautiful... take a boat tour, have a nice dinner, visit the shops. ONE BIG WEAKNESS OF ALEX BAY: THE HOTELS ARE NOT GOOD. I've stayed at multiple locations and they're just run down and out dates. Do what Clayton did... put in a nice hotel A-bay!

Yep, 1864 islands in the Thousand Island area. Taking a tour boat is the best way to get aquainted to the area, but to see all 1864 of them? Book a tour of one of the castles located on the islands and you wont be disappointed. Or maybe rent a pontoon boat and party your way up and down the river. Many options to choose from. ENJOY!

The best part is the 2 1/2 hour boat tour. Alex bay is pretty honky-tonk, but pubs and restaurants are all over and generally good. Souvenir shops galore. Try a visit to Clayton off Rt 37 for a more laid back town that still has nice river parks, walks and restaurants

Most sublime and picturesque vacation spot I've seen in North America. The water flows smoothly, the islands and their "camps" are each interesting and well maintained. The boat tours are well worth the price - or rent your own boat , but observe the cross-border customs rules

took couple of boat tour around islands whick u dont want to miss.one where u see bolt and singer castles, if u dont do anything else u want to see bolt castle it is fantastic. very nice area to take a vacation.quiet peace full.

We took the Uncle Sam's boat tour...2-1/4 hours....from Alexandria Bay. It was the two countries, cost $23 pp/adult. Free parking. No need to purchase tix ahead of time. Lovely way to spend the day. We were able to get off at Boldt Castle and pay for our admission and visit and enjoy that too.
Look for the shuttles with the American Flags to take you back to shore.
Really enjoyed our day!

The islands and private homes are magnificent, but emphasis on the word "private". A lot can be seen from the mainland, boat tours and the few islands with car access. Accommodations are so-so. Clayton has a great new hotel. The NY State parks for camping are crowded but very nice. Most of the Canadian Park Islands are only accessible by your own boat (thats cool too). Two Island castles are open to the public with tour boat access. The Antique Boat Museum in Clayton is about the best in the world. Kingston Ontario is a charming old city with a fort from the 1700's. I'm sure I missed many sites. Oh yeah, the summer camp colony of Thousand Island Park on Wellesley Island is like stepping back into 1875, and you can drive there!

We stayed at Capt. Thompson's Resort for three nights.
We did the Two Nation Tour and the Singer Castle Tour. $114.00 for two combo tickets. We took the Two Nation Tour on one day at 10am and the Singer Castle Tour the next day at 10am.
We drove to Cape Vincent, NY to see the Tibbett's Lighthouse, stopped in Clayton and went into some shops and had ice cream. Stopped in Wellesley, NY to walk around.

Loved the 2-Nation tour done by Uncle Sam Boat Tours, especially the section passing "Millionaire's Row." Amazed by the number of islands that have houses. Well worth the time spent to sail through this beautiful area.

we rode uncle sam boat tour for over couple hours on saint lawrence river on thousands islands smooth and pleasant day .

Lived in the 1000 Islands for many years - it is truly an amazing area. The St. Lawrence river offers great boating, fishing and diving. After living here for more than 30 years I still have not discovered all the secrets of the 1000 Islands. Must see for everyone!

The thousand islands tour was first of the 2 day tour to Niagara. Arriving at the dock, your senses are treated to the fresh and clean air of the surrounding, topped with the breathtaking sights of nature. As you go on the boat tour of the lake to see the houses atop the islands, you can't help but get mesmerized by the beauty and unique characteristic of each house that you see. The houses are built with careful thought and are essentially a reflection of the wide imagination of its architects/designers/builders/owners. With the pristine waters and beautiful nature as the backdrop, one is overwhelmed by feelings of awe and wonder which ultimately leads anyone to wish they lived in one of the houses in the islands.

A 2 day quick trip to the 1000 islands turned into an amazing weekend. Staying at Angel Rock vacation homes to visiting Bolt castle, the weekend turned out to be better than expected. I would highly recommend Angel Rock if you are looking for a CLEAN,comfortable place to stay. Our trip was rather short, but will definitely be longer in the future. Loved it!!

Cool tour of the islands and the history behind many of them. Really 1,864 islands and all beautiful and lushest green. Water levels were high affecting some of the islands and occupancy, but still very pretty!

Yes, there are over 1,000 islands! Cute little town with lots of shops and restaurants. Great for all ages!

Visited 1000 Islands in July 2019, after putting it off for too long. It is a wonderful area of New York State, and you should put it on your list if you haven't already. The St Lawrence Seaway area, with the beautiful islands, small and large, set in the middle, is a scenic destination. If you love the water, as I do, and little riverside towns and villages, you will thoroughly enjoy the experience. You can watch the freighter ships pass by, as we did in Clayton, NY, and have a cup of coffee while sitting on a Park bench overlooking the water. Just do it. Take the trip for a couple of days. You will not regret it. Warmest regards, John J. Flanagan, Clifton Park, NY

We love the Thousand Islands! Being by the water and on the River is so relaxing. There is so much to do here. Places to eat..places to visit..places to fish and places to relax! Everyone should visit the Islands and take an adventure of a lifetime....you will want to keep coming back. We are there a couple times a month through out the summer and there is always something new to see or do!

Friendly town, used to tourists which is nice since they receive their business from travelers.
Easy and safe to walk around.

The Thousand islands are a hidden gem. There's an island feel all while being in Northern New York. It is laid back and friendly. Great town to stroll around. Nice for families, young couples, bikers, drinkers or adventurers.

I visited this place as part of my trip to niagra falls and I was not expecting anything much before we entered this quite little beautiful town of alexandria bay. Too pretty a place, relaxed atmosphere and lots of awesome ducatis and bullets. The cruise showed us different islands alongside the bay. I wanted to stay and spend some time in the town but had to leave considering the package. But if you visit separately do stay.

Visiting Thousand Islands is a "must" once in a life (this is my second, and I would do it more and more times).
St Lawrence River is the natural frontier between Canada and USA, a beautiful scenery where you'll find lots of amazing and beautiful islands, private islands, where the owners have their houses and gardens, in breathtaking surroundings.
Sailing between this islands is an experience that is highly recommended to live (there are several boat companies that offer excursions in the area).

A Beautiful place to visit or live here yearround. The channel is so wonderful w/ the big ships going up and down the River. And to go fishing w/ my husband . He is retired now and this has been his dream to move here ,

Ride the 3deck boat to thousand island with lunch.food is mediocre and see the boldt castle and I’m disappointed nothing much to see in the castle some of the room was not done yet.i will not come back to Alexandria New York .

The tour narrator was Rosemary & she is terrific!
Enjoyed the trips to the castles and the narration of the islands. Great Job Rosemary!!

An excellent village to spend some time relaxing and walking around. The scenery along the St. Lawrence is excellent

The guide was pretty good and told lots of bad jokes, but also included some good history and stories. I would say that as little as I know of he history, I did catch a couple wrong, but not significant, facts. The tour is probably as good as any of the tours. I got a little tired of smelling diesel fumes from the boat. The trip is very pretty.

I had no idea this little town existed! Absolutely breathtaking. Amazing views & fantastic food. Lovely little shops. You can’t help but fall in love with Alexandria Bay & the Thousand Islands. Highly recommend a boat tour. Well worth the money. Boldt Castle was fascinating.

There are lot of cruises which take you through these islands. There are about more than 1000 islands here. Some of the mansions on the islands are of famous celebrities. The boat ride is great and you can capture many pictures with great scenarios.

It has been several years since we visited the 1000 Islands. Looking to see what's new and what old favorites are still around This trip was no different. New adventures and remembered things. Looking forward to our next trip

A number of activities to do, though we got there late in the day and early in the summer before most things were in full operation.
Very scenic area.

This is my third visit to A Bay. Once when I was a teen- Loved it, nothing but gift shops, places to eat. Once in my mid twenties- Fun, nothing but the same gift shops, food, and bars. Last time- recently- over 40- kind of boring- same cheesy gift shops, restaurants and bars. My husband found a riverwalk that let you walk along the St. Lawrence. That was nice, otherwise water at either end of maybe a half mile strip. Reminded us of Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls. If you have never been, you need to experience it at least once. Take the boat tour, visit the castle, etc... As for me, I'll pass.

Well worth taking the boat tour; informative narrative about the Thousand Island history and the summer homes of the rich and famous.

Our first visit to the area was quiet a surprise. Over 1800 islands, large and small. Took an Uncle Sam's boat tour and enjoyed the trio.

Alexandria is a beautiful town with wonderful little shops and restaurants.. The people are friendly ,caring and welcoming..Thinking of coming back in August to spend more time and take the boat tour..

Visited the thousand island area (did you know there are actually about 1,800 islands!) in early October just after most owners have closed their island home for the season. So the river was uncrowded and made for a peaceful boat tour. The many islands, with their history are fascinating as well as beautiful. There are many sizes (with the smallest being called Tom Thumb island ... did you know that in order to be called an island it must have some sort of plant, be above water all year and be surrounded by water?). The history is rich in this area, especially from the prohibition years in the US when smugglers would run alcohol from Canada to the US across the islands.. There are many striking mansions on the islands and many different types of river currents caused by the islands. On a tour they will point out different types like the whirlpool area near smugglers cove which are very interesting. Another special note is that the water of the St. Lawrence in this area is about 95% pure(!) In addition to the smaller islands with houses there are also larger islands with animal life. One of the most interesting is Deer Island, which has swimming white tail deer (yep, you read that right!). All in all a great way to spend an afternoon.

The Thousand Islands is without doubt one of the most beautiful places we have seen, incredibly scenary mixed with clear water, what a place to come and see extremely relaxing.

We visited the 1000 Islands region for the first time on Oct. 10-12, 2015. This was a great time of year to visit because it isn't crowded, however we found out that if we had come a week later, most restaurants, shops, and attractions would have been closed for the season. We were told that the region basically "shuts down" after September.
So we lucked out in choosing the weekend that we did. We stayed at the 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel in Clayton, NY. Clayton was a nice quiet riverfront town, and the hotel was beautiful. The drive to Alex Bay was approx. 10 min. We took the Uncle Sam's 2 Nation Boat Tour of the islands & Boldt Castle- which was the highlight of our trip. This is a must do! Go at least an hour early, parking is not good. We were there at the very end of the season & still couldn't park. Alex Bay itself is a typical "beach town" with crowded streets, not enough parking, tons of "discount souvenir shops", dated hotels, and restaurants. But once you are out on the river, it is scenic & beautiful. To really appreciate this area you need to get out on the river. We also explored some of the nearby state parks, and loved Krings Point State Park-plan to come back & stay in one of their cabins. We would have liked another day to explore more of the region, but plan on returning soon.

Take the 2 hour boat cruise of the
Thousand Islands. Relax, enjoy the scenery, and learn a little from the narration about the history of the islands and its residences.

Alexandria Bay is a quiet, small town located on the 1000 Islands. The locals are very friendly and helpful.

We arrived at Thousand islands for a weeks vacation . We had a wonderful time. There is a a lot to do. We went to several wineries ,took two cruises to see the castles & the history of Thousand Islands, There is a nice little shopping area up & down the streets, Great places to eat while looking at the Saint Lawrence River & the boats going by, This is a good family vacation or for romantic couples. It was a wonderful trip.

It was incredible to cross US to Canada by boat, and see those beautiful islands, hear about the history and facts of the islands. Made me wish to live in there, or visit one of those islands.

The Thousand Islands area is a very charming, serene and pretty area. Alexandria Bay is located on the US side of the St Lawrence, and is chock full of boutiques and restaurants. The Thousand Island themselves are easily accessible by boat and I strongly urge you to take one of the many boat tours offered. It's a great place to enjoy the river views, Bolt Castle and good clean fresh air.

I visited the area for a few days and enjoyed it immensely. The castles and islands were beautiful, and the small towns offered a lot of fun shops and restaurants. The people are friendly and you really feel like you can stop and chat to people. The boat tours are very fun, and in the summer people love their water sports. I'd recommend at least 1 day, but preferably 2 or 3 to get a feel for the fun culture. Don't forget to buy some 1000 island dressing!
Oh, and don't be alarmed if you get a txt message from your carrier saying Welcome To Canada :P that's how close you will be.

This bat tour, which meanders throughout the St. Lawrence River, is quite an enjoyable experience. It show cases many of the summer cottages and mansions of those who can afford this life.

This trip was so great because of Andy, our boat tour guide. He is a pillar of knowledge and we learned so much history of the river it was mind boggling! Look for Andy at Clayton Island Tours and go enjoy yourself!

Whether by your own boat of on one of the tour boats, it is worthwhile seeing these islands. The commercial tours will take you through a loop by the more noteworthy islands and provide interesting commentary and history of the region.

Alexandria Bay is a quaint tourist town. There are many souvenir shops on James Street that are always fun to browse. You can see all kinds of boats, ships & barges going down the river. The town seemed to have a relaxed aire about it. We enjoyed it here.

Summer months are good to visit this place. It has around 1800 small little islands many of which is as small as a bedroom. Many of the islands are in Canada and many in USA. Worth visiting this place and spend some time during the day.

Our original plans were to go kayaking in the Thousand Islands in the morning and visit Boldt Castle in the afternoon.
The weather report had been promising, but changed suddenly just before we left to rainy, with poor air quality from the Canadian wildfires.
Since we already had hotel reservations in Kingston, Ontario, to be able to get to Gananoque for an 8:30 kayak session on a Monday morning, we started out from Toronto Sunday afternoon for the three hour drive; there is a lot of construction on the roads and we were tied up in Toronto traffic almost three quarters of an hour.
We had not actually made the kayak reservations, so when we got to Kingston and read the weather reports, we decided not to get up at the break of dawn and instead to eat a leisurely breakfast and cross the American border and take the Uncle Sam's two hour tour of the Thousand Islands, which has a stop at Boldt Castle.
One cannot drive to Boldt Castle. It is only accessible by boat.
Uncle Sam's Boat Tours is headquartered in Alexandria Bay, New York.
It costs $12 for the shuttle to Boldt Castle, which leaves every half hour, or just about double that to add on the two hour boat tour. Parking is free in the Uncle Sam's lot.
The Thousand Island tour is very informative and takes you to both the American and Canadian sides of the Thousand Islands.
Still, seeing the Thousand Islands from a guided kayak tour is more exciting.
We hope to come back in better weather.

This place is to total relax. The boat across the river is good. It takes like 45 minutes. It's a beautiful nature place

What a beautiful area. Full of great things to do at any age. Water adventure everywhere! I will definitely be coming back to explore more.

I hadn't been here since 1999 when I moved to another state. This place is a must see for the adventurous traveler! The scenic castles and the amazing homes are everywhere. The water is the draw but be sure to know your dates and seasons if you come to fish from a long distance, b/c catching fish is not guaranteed. Only disappointment is the building of houses seems to be out of control. Way too much building on top of each other IMO! That being said I am sure that I will return at another time of year (not August) and give it another go... I am hooked!😊

Looking for a place filled with beauty and rich in history then visit the 1000 Islands. With plenty of parks and sites at every turn pack up the family and head north. Crystal clear water, plenty of wild life, and lots of islands make for a great place to build memories and reconnect with family. Years ago this was the summer playground for the New York rich and famous. Peak season is July and August but some of the best quite days on the river are in September. Bring your passport so you can cross over the bridges and visit the river towns of Canada. With lots of things to do during the summer months this best kept secret of the north will please even the grumpiest of travelers.

Took a paddle boat tour through the thousand islands. So wonderful. Gorgeous day and went through Canada and the US seeing so many of the islands. Beautiful homes. Crystal, clear water. A must see.

Alexandria Bay is a very quaint little town in the scenic Thousand Islands area along the border of NY and Canada. Alex Bay is the jumping off point to both Singer and Boldt Castle, both muse see locations. Nice shopping area for souvenirs, ice cream, and home made chocolates.

1000 Islands is a must see area along the shared Canadian-USA border in the St. Lawrence River. Castles, mansions and adventure await you. There are many boat tours that offer cruises through the islands and stop at the castles. It is well worth the trip and really is a stunning region to visit. One of my favorite places.

This is the seaway that connects the center of United States to the Atlantic Ocean. A major boating, fishing, sight seeing and water sports area plus two scenic castles you can visit. One in Alexandria Bay, NY and one on Dark Island close to Chippewa Bay, NY. There are 1,800 islands in the area and many beautiful summer homes. There are many activities and resorts located along this seaway yet it keeps it's outdoor scenic beauty. One of the highlights of the United States and often one of the best kept secrets among our citizens. State Parks and marinas are located along Rt. 12 northeast from Clayton, NY to Ogdensburg, NY,

Take the 2 hr speed boat tour to get a great overview of the islands. We spent some time at the boat museum and caught the tour from there

We took two boat tours - one at Kingston, Ontario and one at Alexandra Bay, New York showcasing different parts of the river. Beautiful scenery and interesting information about the islands.

Took tour of Thousand Islands and St Lawrence River and found it to be worthwhile to understand the history of the area. Was fun to go across to the Canadian side and view the bridges across the islands from the USA to Canada.

There are a lot of interesting places on our planet. And of course no way to see all of them but when you have an aspiration to see them, don't put it aside!
Thousand Islands - tiny and big with castle or small mansions are absolutely impressive! I took my 14 years old daughter to that trip and was surprised that she stopped using her phone,(which she used all the time),and started watching around her. That was a sign that it was worth to see that place!

Our Uncle Sam's boat tour if the 1000 islands was great. We really enjoyed seeing some of these islands. We were amazed at how wealthy buy these islands then build mansions on them. Even today the rich buy an island and build on it. Cruising around them on a sunny, fall day was great.

We recently visited the Thousand Islands. Throughout our visit we found everyone we met to be friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the boat ride on Uncle Sam's. The narrator was very knowledgeable and the scenery spectacular. Our visit to stunning Boldt Castle was a highlight of the trip. The only downfall was the lack of good food. We did not find any fine dining or in general any delicious dinners during our stay.

Went to thousand islands for the first time. Really enjoyed visiting bolt castle. The tour boat ride to get to the castle was a little questionable, but otherwise it is a very beautiful place to vacation or take a day trip to.

Take the two nation (NY/Canada) boat tour by Uncle Sam from the bay docks, seeing lovely private homes on many islands, and
a narrated tour of the history of the area!

When anyone visits here please make sure to stop at the visitor center and get info, this helped us a lot. Also make sure to take a tour on Clayton Boat tours to really see and learn about the Islands. Very very pretty area and recommend everyone makes this a must do. Allow at least 2 days there. Visit Clayton and Alexandra Bay both. Have fun!!!

We had been travelling for more than 5-6 hours and were tired of sitting in the stifling environment of AC bus and this trip came as a boon to me as I could breathe in fresh air!
The scenic beauty is beyond words, each island presents a unique structure! Would love to stay at one of these after my retirement..

So much to do and see all summer on the river. We love exploring the whole river and coves. we enjoy swimming on grindstone island aka potters beach. Crystal clear water and sandy beach.

This place is magical and has serene beauty hidden in the 1864+ islands. This was my second trip to 1000 Islands and its truly a refreshing place. Must visit after Niagara falls to end your trip.

it is so beautiful here! You can do a boat tour and see all the different houses which are really cool to see!

Had a great vacation camping with friends. We rented a boat and visited Alexandria Bay and Clayton and swam in the lake of Isles, we stayed at Wellesley Island State Park. Just watch out for the Canadian police who were pulling over boaters left and right and giving them ridiculous fines for crossing into Canadian waters

The area is a great place for all types of travelers with varying needs. I stayed in Clayton, NY which offers a small town atmosphere. There was more to see and do than I could accomplish in 3 short days. The town offers a weaving museum and a boat museum which I hope to visit next trip! I did take a Two Nation Boat Tour and visited Bolt Castle on Heart Island. I want to return and visit Singer Castle on Dark Island. The purpose of my trip was
R & R so packing in lots of tours wasn't on the agenda - this trip! I stayed at West Winds in Clayton and it was the perfect place to relax. No frills, but a beautiful view of the St.Lawrence, a heated pool, campfire each evening and supplies to grill my meals if desired. It was a peaceful retreat. The area offers a variety of hotels and experiences. I toured an upscale hotel in Clayton and the lawn was set up for a wedding - I imagine it was quite beautiful with a view of the St. Lawrence. The places I visited were clean and I felt safe. Something to be said for that in today's busy world. Fishing, outdoor adventures, family fun, romantic get-a-ways - all perfect forthis region.

We jumped on board Cpt Eli's boat cruise and I was blown away by some of the nice homes and setups I seen while cruising around. I would LOVE to be able to tour through some of these mansions, although understandably this isn't a option as people live in most. The castle at the end was awesome

The Thousand Islands area is a beautiful summer playground for anyone who loves the outdoors. Cruising the mighty St. Lawrence River is so relaxing. There are many beautiful properties on the islands and mainland which make for interesting cruising. I highly recommend a summer vacation in the Thousand Islands.

Fantastic place! Suggest taking a tour and visiting - so much history! Whether its your own boat or a guided tour, its worth the visit. Visiting the Fall means colder weather but not as crowded.

Great place to enjoy the water the food and Canada which is about 15 minutes away. The people we meet along the way are great and so was our visit to Clayton about 7 miles away.

We went on the uncle Sam's boat cruise of the 1000 islands , It was amazing we had a great time the female that did the commentary (a school teacher ) helped to make our enjoyable day. Highly recommeded .

If you are around make sure you are taking the 1000 island tour. Its worth it..Alexandria Bay is nice too.

The many Islands were so Beautiful and the Water just Sparkled. It was Breath-taking. We enjoyed our trip to the Islands in Alexandria Bay very much. I have never written reviews before my trip to the Islands and Alexandria Bay but I just had to share our experience!

This is one of Gods beautiful place. The summer is a amazing place to be on the river. But the winter it is pretty but very desolate. But amazing to see!

The Thousand Islands are a real treasure that everyone should visit at some point in their lives. Located on the St. Lawrence River, the architecture of some of the large, stately homes is something to behold. It is so interesting to take a narrated boat tour which gives you the opportunity to see the beautiful Islands and find out about some of the better-known residents who have their homes on these islands.

The Thousand Islands area is a must see travel destination. We will definitely be back. While visiting, boating is a must. If you rent a boat, avoid Bayside Marina! See my other reviews. We had to file a police report and a fraud report with our bank. There are several other much more reputable marinas in the area just make sure you check reviews. Wellesley Island state park in a beautiful place to camp and visit. Lots of wineries and breweries and of course, make sure you get a bottle of the original Thousand Island dressing. End your day with an incredible sunset and a gorgeous nighttime sky.

Had a wonderful time in Canada at the Sleepy Hollow B & B in Gananoque CA. Took Uncle Sam's Luncheon Cruise and went to Boldt Castle. We enjoyed a wonderful Theater event and the Alexandria shopping was great/

Great place to visit. Lots to do and see. Must visit Boldt Castle and take an Uncle Sams Boat tour. People are fiornedly

did the wine & beer cruise. The food selection was better than expected. The beer & wine was very disappointing, both in quality & quantity. The music was terrible. The cruise itself was amazing. the islands are truly beautiful.

Breathtaking place, boats, restaurants, bars, little food shaqs, nice hotel/resort, theres a nice boat tour, people gatting married all sorts of great places. We just went for a couple hours and did not regret it!

A beautiful scenic tour with cheap beer prices 4 dollars for a regular, 5 dollars for a craft beer. 1.50 for a box of popcorn. Also heard one of my favorite all time lines uttered by the woman narrating the tour." If you don't start drinking in the morning, you can't say you've been drinking all day" Priceless.

We were a group of 11 people on 10 motorcycles who decided to take a day trip from the Ottawa area to Alexandria Bay. The route was very scenic and the town itself, just gorgeous!
We found everyone we met in Alexandria Bay to be courteous, friendly and very helpful. The shops were a little "touristy" for my liking but, the beauty of the people and the surroundings made the day very worth while.
Next summer, we will take this trip again and spend a weekend enjoying all that the area has to offer.

Our boat tour included a drop-off/pick-up at the castle and departed the marina in the early afternoon; it cruised up and down the St. L. Seaway, weaving its way to the most scenic sites. The boat tour was fully narrated. We were on a 3 deck paddle boat. If you sit on the top deck, you will need to stand to get good photos as the boat side rails obstruct the view if you sit. The top deck is uncovered; it got hot in the sun so be prepared. In hind-sight, we should have selected a covered deck. The narrator was superb! The views were georgeous.

We took the 2 nation tour in the morning and a dinner cruise at night. We had time to kill between trips so we walked the streets. Again, tourist trap stores, bars and restaurants. One bar was so busy when we sat down no one waited on us so we left. We found another that was not so busy, but most of the patrons were very much over the legal limit. We had our drink and left. A typical tourist town if you like them.

Spent a couple of days here before heading to the Finger lakes. Did a boat tour, visited Boldt Castle and hit the Sacket Harbor Battlefield. All in all an enjoyable two days.

The ride up Rte 81 is scenic and breathtaking at some juncture... Arriving at Alexander Bay around 2:00pm... Quint town with lots of eateries and bars with local products. Stayed at the Ship Motel which is walking distance to every thing in town
People are friendly and welcoming. Must see is the Boldt Castle..lots of places to see in and around Alexander Bay

This area stretches from upstate New York, well into Canada, and can be toured without a passport! There are many beautiful areas to glide past as the boat's narrator (ours was really corny) tells the history of the area and its interesting and unique homes. There are two American castles in this region, Singer (guided tour) and Boldt (self guided) which are both well worth taking an afternoon to visit. Singer castle is even available for weddings (they have a really, nice flat flower garden overlooking the river), and can even be rented for a night (currently $775 per couple per night), which includes dinner and breakfast!

The narrated ride is a leisure cruise starting in Alexandria Bay and cruising among some of the Thousand Islands. Our tour passed many notable houses and islands where the rich and famous had summer homes. We sailed under the international bridge and meandered across the border into Canadian waters and back. St. Lawrence Seaway passes through the islands too so we sailed past freighters on our cruise. It was a relaxing trip, punctuated by a generous stop at Boldt Castle.

Go on a cruise, rent a boat, fly over, whatever - but make sure you see this place. Serenity, peace, quiet (well, except for cruise boats and jet-skis :))... If you can, rent a place and stay for a few days. If you are financially challenged like us, grab one of the many boats to show you around and pretend, for an afternoon, that you live in that same world too.

Absolutely beautiful. Did a boat tour, the only way to see the islands. The area is very clean. Will be returning.

Over 1,500 islands and some of the most beautiful scenery around. Rugged woods and forests meet clean flowing river and bay waters. Lake and ocean freighters are always passing by. The area houses several castles while meeting the Canadian border .

First time visit and definitely will be back. So much to see, especially by boat. Don't miss Heart Island with Boldt Castle and the Yacht house as well.

Took an amazing tour of the Islands it was so peaceful and relaxing not to mention gorgeous and breathtaking at times. Its the perfect get away for someone not wanting to spend a lot of time traveling. It was a bit of a drive to get there but, well worth it.

Historic with beautiful homes on various islands. View especially nice on bridge on way to and from Canada. Boat rides are available and they are really an excellent way to see the 1000 islands up close.

this is a quaint, small little place that does not even have red lights! just a few stop signs. Shops are great, lots in walking distance. The Riveredge Hotel was a great place to stay for sure!!!

Exciting to learn about the heritage of how the 1000 islands came to be and the beautiful landscapng.

Alexandria Bay and the Thousand Islands is a very different time in the winter, but it is still beautiful. I had to go up there last weekend, and the scene is very different; most the stores and restaurants are seasonal, so they are not open. There are a couple places on the main roads of the town(s) that are open, but the more "touristy" the town, the less is still open. HOWEVER, any stores that are open in many of these small villages are offering great sales on merchandise, so it is still worth a visit. And the winter scenery is spectacular!

The St. Lawrence Seaway is beautiful and we enjoyed our visit immensely. Everyone in the motel, restaurants, boat tour, Boldt Castle, and wineries was friendly and helpful.

I'm always amazed at how many people don't know about this area of New York. It should be on everyone's travel list. It's just incredible. The river is bigger than many lakes, nice clean, clear and crisp water. Why travel abroad when this beautiful area is just a drive away. Visit both Alex. Bay and Clayton. There's plenty to do for the whole family but make sure you spend some time sitting by the river just "boat watching"
Have a salad with Thousand Island dressing.

Both Canadian and US sides of Thousand Islands are beautiful. Places to visit on US side are Alex Bay and Clayton. And on Canadian side, Gananoque and Ivy Lea.

Cruising around these islands is lovely, total amount really is 1,864, but thousand islands sounds better. Go if you can

It is called Thousand Island but there are far more than that. The definition of an island is a interesting in it's self.

My main goal in visiting this area was to see Boldt Castle, which we did and thoroughly enjoyed; however, I wish I had researched the entire area more and spent more time in 1000 Islands! We walked through Alexandria Bay after our ferry ride to Boldt Castle then had lunch at Cathy's which was very good and reasonably priced. There is a beautiful park and we easily could have spent an entire day or two shopping and exploring!

This is a great place full of both natural and man made beauty. Make sure to visit the castles and take a boat tour. We enjoyed wine tasting, mini golf, shopping and other fun area attractions.

Thoroughly enjoyed this cruise, also very relaxing. It's a one hour ride passing the many different islands and also the spectacular castle. Awesome day with nice sunshine on this boat ride.

Just about everything was closed. Only the tourist boats were one. No place to eat that looked "safe".

we took the boat trip and was very pleased with it the captain was very helpful explaining different things and the water was so clear.would do it again

Not knowing what to expect, we stayed 2 days in Clayton and 2 days in Alexandria Bay. It was the perfect amount of time in both places. Make sure you do the museum in both towns and the Uncle Sam Boat Ride and Boldt Castle.

We rented a boat from O'Briens U-Drive it's a great little business with great boats. We started to go around the islands it was amazing great views. We spend all day looking at all the great and different places. The only thing is that it doesn't have any beaches. I recommend renting a boat and just jump out the boat to enjoy the great refreshing water it was 86 degrees when we went. We really enjoy our trip to the thousands Islands

My husband and I went to Thousand Islands for a fall getaway on October 17th. The area is beautiful and we stayed at the Riveredge Resort, Alexandria Bay, which was also very nice. The room was great and the view overlooking Boldt Castle was wonderful. However, much to our disappointment, in researching the trip and attractions and restaurants, we did not see anything that mentioned that after Columbus Day nearly every attraction and restaurant close for the season. We were so disappointed to learn we were not able to visit Boldt Castel, even though we could see if from our room, because of the closure. The Uncle Sam Boat Tours was still running under a much reduced schedule. We were able to do the 2 hour tour which was very nice and I would recommend. The fact that most of the restaurants in the town of Alexandria Bay were closed was also a disappointment. I think this should be noted so that people realize that going after Columbus Day is not really worth the trip. One person said I should have researched better, however, I explained that I would be standing in front of a restaurant that on their website still stated OPEN but was closed for the season. Just wish the websites were updated with the information of everything being limited after Columbus Day. I would have rated this trip higher except for the limited availability of the attractions.

I've always hear raves about the 1000 islands. And if you have a house or boat or both it must be fantastic. We stayed in Alexandria Bay and took the Uncle Sam Cruise. The Town is a little souvenir shop heavy almost to point of cheesy but not quite. The boat tour was nice, I would had liked a bit closer look at the islands but it was a good tour and history of the area. I had somewhat imagined it something mystically beautiful. It was a bit disappointed. I think if there's a next time I would want a boat or jet ski or helicopter ride to really see the place. I feel like the greatness is there but I couldn't see it up close for myself.

We loved the quaint and historic streets dotted with great restaurants and bars. The uncle Sam boat tour with the Bouldt Castle was fantastic. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Love this place, wish we could live here all the time. Love the fresh water, boat trips and just fresh air. Plan to return next year.

Tons of great little shops, amazing views and plenty of opportunities to explore further around the north country. From camping to staying at hotels I've always loved this place!

It is hard to imagine unless you see it with your own eyes. I read about this place, but didn't know about houses on each island. Who owns them and the history behind each house until I visited this place. So many water related activities if you like them. Boat tour is a must if you go here.

I've been coming up to the Thousand Islands for 19 years. My father-in-law grew up in upstate NY and learned to swim/fish/life on the river. Now, it has been a family tradition for the guys to come up during opening week of bass/pike season. This trip is what we think about during the cold winter months, the hot August days in the south and when spring begins to warm up, we know the trip is just around the corner.
The weather (except for this year- hot!) is perfect. The fishing goes in cycles. This year was a bit better than last year. But there have been times when we caught fewer than 20 for the week. And that was 6 of us! Zebra mussels and cormorants, and now gobi fish, have devastated the fishing up here in the past 15 years. But there are signs an equilibrium is coming around.
The river changes every year and sometimes from day to day. When we're not fishing we sit around and just look at the beauty around us. Near Alex Bay and Clayton there are activities for younger kids if you're tired of the water. But the river is the main attraction.

The view was amazing. Anyone wanting to relax and enjoy nature will enjoy visiting this area. The locals are very friendly and eager to tell about the sights.

Once you see the many islands, channels and the river itself, yo will keep this area close to your heart. Alexandria Bay is a great starting point, nice restaurants and things to do, but either east or west along the river will keep your camera clicking.

Thousand Islands has so much to do and I loved it. They have great food places and so many activities to do.
It is a great family vacation and I do recommend staying here

A beautiful endless possibility of travel for a day or a couple of hours! You can travel to restaurants, beaches or shopping all on the St Lawrence River .

The 1000 Islands region is an absolutely gorgeous area of the river. It’s dotted with pretty islands & an eclectic mix of charming little cottages, massive summer homes, Boldt Castle, & more. Enjoy a laidback getaway with scenic cruising, recreation on the water, wineries, etc. Plan ahead for where to stay. There are some resorts, campgrounds, & appealing Airbnbs with river views & access.

We stayed in Thousand Island Park on Wellesley Island in a friend's cottage. It is like stepping back in time about 100 years to a time when people moved at a much more relaxed pace and were friendly. There's a wonderful, warm and healthy feeling to this place.
Once you park your car, rent a golf cart to get around.
There are charming Victorian homes in TIP, a boathouse with a small deck off which people swim, various game things (tennis, tetherball, swings, jungle gyms, etc.), a gazebo, open lawn areas, a riverside lawn area, and swimming off of one of the areas where there are large rocks.
Children freely play together outside without the need for their parents to hover around them---it's safe we were told. Everyone seems to know everyone else because they've been coming here since they were young.
It's definitely a place to experience once if not regularly during the summer months.

This place is so pretty, scenic & the people there were all very friendly & accommodating.
We spent two days there and I wish we had two more days to be there.

this place is really interesting multimillion dollar houses, beautiful landscapes ,the boat trip was great, staff was very informative

Located on the St Lawrence River between NY and Canada, there are over 1800 islands located here. Try to take a boat tour;

Breathtaking views of the Thousand Islands are sullied by the dump of a town that is Alexandria Bay. One of the worst tourist towns I've visited. People aren't friendly in the shops and restaurants. Everything there is tired and shabby. You have to make the best of your time spent there by finding hidden gems and fun tours.

well worth a boat trip - if you can avoid the dangerous jet skiers... 23$ for 2.5 hours with a very knowledgeable guide on Uncle Sams

It should be on everybody's bucket list, from May to October,Thousand Islands is just the most beautiful and wonderful area to visit. It is about 120 miles long and has 1708 islands in the middle of the great St-Lawrence river;you have Ontario,Canada on one side and New York state on the other with beautiful towns and villages such as Alexandria Bay,Clayton,Rockport,Gananoque with great restaurants on both sides of the river. You also have museums and parks galore plus Bolt castle,so much to do.

Just an amazing area to visit. The islands are beautiful to look at. Tour boat is a good mandatory activity. We stayed at Alexandria Bay. Very calm place so long as yoy stay away from Pirates week event.

Been here many times, and I just miss it when I don't come back for a few years. I'll be back next year for sure!

Enjoyed the peace and quiet of the motel.... Restaurant on the premises was great for a night.. Then you have time to look around for others if you are staying The staff is helpful in assisting you with directions, etc.

In recently was in the Thousand Islands area. I went thru a tour company and their boat. So many islands to see on the U.S. and Canadian areas. You will see beautiful homes and amazing scenery. A must see. If this review helped in anyway click the "yes" box below.

We drove to Thousand Island after visiting Niagara falls during summer . Around 6 hrs from Niagara.
We took 2.5 hrs boat trip which goes even in Canadian waters. Awesome houses in each small islands. Could see how rich in America lives. Beautiful scenic journey.

Absolutely beautiful and scenic. We were on a sailboat enjoying various sights: the birds, Boldt castle, the houses on the islands. Folks were very friendly and jolly at Alexandria Bay.

If you love to be on the water and tour the islands, it is a nice place to visit.
From your own boat or a tour boat you view many islands, some small, some large but all interesting to view.
KP

My cousins had a cottage on Stave Island and I went there many times as a child. We've been back many time as adults and we still love. Go on a boat cruise or rent a boat yourself. A relaxing day!

This is a beautiful place with lots of outdoor activity. Hiking, boating, fishing, etc. The water is unbelievably clear for a river.

It is actually 1862 islands. Beautiful natural place. We loved it. We were there for 4 days and when we were leaving, we just didn't feel like coming back home.

1000 Islands New York is taxing my family to death from town water and sewer project we are NOT connected to or using. This place will kill somebody you love with drug addiction and it supports alcoholism, Born and raised spending most of my days bored with hardly no job opportunity. This is where you come to die and collect disability and welfare. The weather sucks, the locals are stuck up and racist. We pay 40+ grand in taxes a year for muddy water front property next to a new scrap yard (solar panels). Highly DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!

The Boldt Castle and grounds were absolutely beautiful. Despite the high water level which kept anyone from touring the Power House or Yacht House, the rest of the grounds and the house were stunning. We found the unfinished upper floors and the basement fascinating. Would highly recommend this tour and the tour of the 1000 Islands.

This place is an amazing mix of geography and history. It's beauty is unmatched. There's Alex Bay and Clayton and everything in-between and across the bridge to Wellesley Island.

What an amazing place. There are 1,864 islands of which very few are reachable by car. If you don't have a boat, you can get tours from Alexandria Bay, NY or Rockport, ON. We did the tour from Alexandria Bay on Uncle Sam boats, they are so professional.
I can tell you how beautiful this place is, must see for everyone.

Took the Uncle Sam 2 Nation Boat Tour. Extremely interesting, scenic and enjoyable. We had fantastic weather, the tour guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. The houses on the islands etc are amazing. This tour drops you off at the Boldt Castle, which is a diamond attraction. One of the best tourist days I have had.

The Thousand Islands lie in the St Lawrence River - actually there are 1864 islands! The US/Canada border lies in the river, with islands in both countries. The St Lawrence River begins where Lake Ontario ends. The state of New York borders much of the river on the US side.

Lots to look at and nice that the tour guide had alot of history for the area. But the boat was old and the chairs do old they were rusted be and cushions very soiled. If you can overlook that the views are gorgeous.

If you are looking for rest and relaxation in tranquil beauty, this is the place. Looking to spend a day boating or fishing, this is the place. I have been going to the 1000 Islands for 45+years and I never tire of seeing it. Not a lot to do but R&R. Take a boat ride on a tour boat for sure. Go to Bolt Castle to see how the other half lives in a "summer cottage". It's just gorgeous

While visiting our daughter in Watertown, my husband and I went on the boat tour of Thousand Islands. There were many marvelous castles that we were able to explore during our trip.
We were told by the tour guide that many years ago the residents within Thousand Islands would gather from time to time and cook meals. Consequently, many of the friends and neighbors had mixed a little of this and a little of that together and came up with the thousand Island salad dressing. Good story.
Although you can only get the full experience by taking a boat tour it was well worth the money! It was a wonderful adventure!
Enjoy!

My wife and I joined another couple on their boat for a weekend cruise through the Thousand Islands on the St Laurence River. The clear waters and the numerous granite rimmed, forested islands are a summer time dream. Be sure to take your passport to be able to make a stop in Canada as the US/Canada border meanders through the entire area. There are a few castles as well as picturesque summer cottages scattered through the islands. Throw down a "lunch hook" for a picnic or a refreshing swim near deserted island or public park. Alternatively, stop at one of the attractive river towns for a meal or dock in one of the private marinas for an overnight stay. Public tour boats are also available from many river towns on both sides of the border.

For years I've heard about the great scuba diving in the Thousand Islands so I finally planned a trip to check it out and it was AWESOME!
We stayed on the American side of the river but wish we had stayed on the Canadian side since the exchange rate would be favorable for the US dollar but no matter the price, the diving was well worth it.
We did the Vickery, the America, the Keystorm, the Robert Peele and a 2 other wrecks - all of which were very interesting and easily navigable. The visibility was at least 40ft each day and the water temps in the low 60s - warm enough for a 7mm wetsuit. Even the boat rides out were fascinating - the islands are beautiful and full of history! All of this just a 6 hour drive from New York City - well worth the trip!

Just returned from a stay in the Alex Bay, 1000 Islands area of NY. what a beautiful area. tons of activities, boating, swimming. We were on a motorcycle trip and explored much of the immediate areas as well as into the Adirandack mountains. well worth the trip and highly recommend the area. Just beautiful.

We really enjoyed our trip to Thousand Islands. We took a boat and castle tour. And we really love both tours. I really recommend. We really enjoyed our trip to Thousand Islands. We took a boat and castle tour. And we really love both tours. I really recommend.

A boat trip among the islands on the Saint Lawrence is a must. See Bolt Castle if you can. Enjoy. Relax. The Town of Clayton just to the west of Alexander Bay was a very nice surprise.

Is truly a nice change & reminded me of some islands in thailand minus the heat. Got great insight into how things operate for islanders etc.

You will learn alot about the history of the area by taking the tour. The mansions you will see are beautiful. We went on an overcast day, during the summer. If tne sun had been out, it would have been too hot.

if you get bored here it is your own fault --there are hidden treasures and historical places galore

We were only in Alexandria Bay for one night. We took a boat tour and had dinner in well-review pizzeria. Everything was nice and we had a good time.

The Thousand Islands area is a beautiful playground for all ages. Take a boat tour to get the full history and a great look at some of the waterfront homes and the views. Sam's Boat Tours gives a great two hour tour with a convenient snack bar on the boat. The tour will deposit you at Heart Island for a Boldt Castle visit.

This is the second time we have taken a bout tour of Thousand Islands. Each in a different direction. OPnce from Cananda and once from the US side. Both were in the autumn. The area is spectacular, peaceful, and no wonder so many mult-millionaires have built fabulous homes here. Our tour guide on Uncle Sam's Tour was very informative for a 2 1/2 hour tour.

Some of cooworkers suggested to visit Thousand islands. We drove good 12 hours from Detroit and it was worth all the time we spent on the road. We took a ferry 1 hr out of Ganonoque on the Canadian side and a Boldt Castle trip on the American side and stayed on the island for a few hours. The Boldt island was so impressive for me. The island of hearts well decorated with great panaromic views .The Canadian side was morenatural, and less touristy. The American side in Alexandria Bay was full of tour buses and small shops, but the trip to Boldt Castle and Yacht house was worth it.

My wife and I visited the 1000 islands and were delighted with the scenery, the history and Alexandria Bay.
This is a must see area for visitors.
B.....Niagara

Taking time to spend on the river, especially a guided tour, is well worth your time. You will get an up close and personal look at some of the interesting history the area has to offer. The sights are wonderful. There are many shops to check out with a variety of offerings. Local wine and spirits is a "don't miss" for the adults !

If you want a late spring to early fall place to visit with lots to do and see, I would highly recommend coming up to the region. We stay in Clayton every year, renting a cottage there (West Winds Motel and Cottages). Once you have spent a day or so in Alexandria Bay, done the boat trip and hit the souvenir shops, there is still a lot you can do. Within less than a mi;e, you have the miniature golf, Go Kart racing, a hedge maze and an Aqua Zoo. There are lots of restaurants in and near Clayton or Alexandria Bay. Get a travel guide for the area, Wineries, distilleries, a dairy farm, plus War of 1812 battlefield site, to name a few places. Or, go fishing. Maybe just relax at a cottage and cook out. Tons of places to stay.

The Thousand Islands is a place that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. I used to visit there as a child and convinced my husband that he would enjoy it too. He Did!

A gorgeous area to vacation at. Lots of places to stay. Good places to eat and the best are the cruises on the St Lawrence river. You won't want to miss bolster castle for its history and romance

Love this area, there is so much to do: visit the small towns, do a boat ride, camp, just visit for the day. So pretty and unique, and I like the history of rich people of old buying up little islands to build summer homes on.

Lovely trip to 1000 islands it was. The day was chilli and we felt super cold in the open deck. The trip to the islands was guided knowing the history. The islands were super clean and have millionaires staying there. The views were awsome crossing the borders of Canada and USA.

Visited the week after Labor Day.it did rain the three days we were there, but found an unusually high number of places already closed especially in Alex Bay. Downtown here a little shabby as well. We favored Clayton to shop and dine.

The cruise around the islands and drives along the shore to Clayton and over to Wellesley Island will remain a cherished memory.

There is a lot to do in this region of New York. The Thousand Islands are a hidden gem to many. Outdoor activities abound like boating, camping, birdwatching, hiking, fishing, and more. If you are into architecture, take a boat ride past Millionaire’s Row. Bring your scuba gear if you want to check out the shipwrecks. Go to the local museums, and learn about history. Put the app called Marine Traffic on your smart phone, and watch for the ships to sail in. Practice your photography. Visit the wineries and farms. Go for a hike or bike ride, and eat ice cream afterwards. So, what are you waiting for? What’s not to like? Go, and have a great time.

Alexandria Bay is a cute little tourist town with lots of eateries and gift shops. Tour boats ride out to castles in the St. Lawrence River. This used to be the playground of the rich and famous 100 years ago. Accept it as a tourist town and just enjoy the visit.

Many Beautiful Homes on the Islands, ride the Uncle Sam's Tour boat if you get a chance. Very informative and fun!

I still remember the day I had visited Alexandria Bay. It was September in 2014. My father wanted to show me this place. So we went there. I didn't expect much because I didn't like to visit so-called 'best tour places'. Also, the weather wasn't good. It was couldy and I'm not sure but a little bit of rain drops were fallen. Anyhow, we arrived and stayed at Captain Tompson's. The next day, fortunately the sky became crystal clear. We bought tickets for two and wandered this little town. (If you're looking for a restaurant, you can check 'Riley's by the River'. I already reviewed that place.) I think I'm a little emotional now, okay, I'll cut unnecessary details. I used 'Uncle Sam Boat Tours'. There were several kinds of boat tours but I think one hour tour is enough. It takes more than one hour since the cruise stops by the island where Boldt castle is built. You can look around on your own and then get on other cruise.
It was so memorable experience.

We found so many state land camp sites that we never chose where to sleep until that day. The Thousand Islands has so much to offer any type of traveler. Fishing, grilling, swimming, boating, and sunbathing are just a few things that we did.
You can plan your trip out day by day; hour by hour. You can plan to go and see where the wind blows. No matter how you travel you WILL have a blast!

Peacefulness and tranquility in abundance. A magical part of the country. Lots of scenic highlights. Simply a million miles away from major cities. Very friendly people.A hidden gem.

I have vacationed in the 1000 Islands all my life. It is a much slower pace, but the region is picking up. The river has swimming, boating, and lots of wildlife. Living in the US, I also love going to Canada (don't forget your passport!) There are also cities on both sides of the river to explore, in addition to wonderful state and provincial parks. On the US side, Alexandria Bay has lots of nightlife, Clayton has the Antique Boat Museum, and Cape Vincent his the best of river village life. On the Canadian side, Kingston is a college town right where the lake and river meet, and Gananoque is a charming tourist town. There are many more places, but I don't want to give away all the area's secrets ;)

We took a boat tour of this island 1000 Island and guide were well aware of what he was doing. He informed us about each and every island on the route. This boat tour was on Saint Lawrence river which comes from Canada. It was thrilling to know one side of the river is the USA and another side is Canada and houses on Canada side were so close, the person sitting on his patio can even wave us.
Guide told us, for being an island, it should have 3 criteria, tree-house and the third thing I don’t remember. We were amazed to see island having just one house and no space at all. Wondering how a person living there was able to stay there so long. Guess they are done with humans :P
The beauty of Thousand Island is the bunch of unique small island in a vast water zone. The islands were super clean and have millionaires staying there. The staff was amazing and snacks on board we all reasonably priced. Our tour included 3 hours of time to get to the island and have a 1-hour stopover. Which was plenty of time. The way home included a stop to Bolt Castle with the option of catching any other Uncle Sam boat back to shore. The scenery is magnificent; the choice of things to do is great, but mostly it is a relaxing time. Enjoy both a sunrise and a sunset over the St. Lawrence.

Its a must visit place in Newyork state. The beauty of Thousand Island is the bunch of unique small island in a vast water zone. All the islands have their own meaning and beauty. You will lost in the beauty of each lsland and how they decorated.. Spent a great time with the exceptional creation of the nature..

We took the boat on a tour of the houses on millionaire's row and some of them are truly amazing (wish I had the money to live here!).

A boat tour is a must in this area if you do not own your own boat. Very relaxing and beautiful area with Boldt Castle being the main attraction.

I had visited Thousand Island many years ago; it was beautiful back then. In my recent visit, it didn't seem as beautiful as before.

We spent a Thurs-Sun long weekend. Brought our own boat and spent much of our time on the water. Stayed in Alexandria Bay but went abt. 10 miles in either direction, down to Clayton and up as far as Singer Castle. So much to see and do! If you have a boat, definitely bring it. Even without it, there's shops and restaurants and events. We were just off the summer season so it was less busy (we live neat Lake George, NY and know what "the season" s like!) but still very lively.

Basically, the main attraction would be the visit to the Thousand Islands Uncle's Sam boating company. The boat ride was a scenic trip to visit the many islands as well as a stop by Bolst Castle which was the main attraction.
The guide, Jill, was great and provided us with many information on the island.
If you are just looking for a relaxing weekend or even for just a day, this is the place to go for.
Alexandria Bay, the town where you can get the cruise boat will not be as interesting as the thousand islands

Alexandria Bay is a great place. WE love less than three hours away and never went before; we will go again soon. We took a dozen photos on our weekend trip and everyone had water and boats in it.

Thousand Islands is absolutely breathtaking. The water is beautiful and area so scenic. So much to do and see.

Had a great weekend get away! Alexandria Bay is a quaint little town on the St Lawerence River. Cute little town shops!! The town does seem to shut down towards the end if October. We went October 12-15,and a lot of the shops and restaurants were closed for the season. But the restaurants that were open had great food and the staff were very friendly.

We will definitely return to tour this area some more. We had just two days and packed a lot in, but must experience more!

Do the Boat Tours with Uncle Sam Boat Tours Great staff, explains the history of the islands and how Islands cameto be. Professional and entertaining staff.

One of the most beautiful places in the country. So many things to see and do. Gorgeous views. History abounds

First off, the beauty of the place. The islands, the river, the rocks, the trees. I don't know of any place anywhere else, that can match up to the beauty of the 1000 Isands. If you enjoy fishing, boating, camping, swimming or sight seeing, this is the place to go. From Krings Point down to Clayton, its a magical place to explore. And if you have a passport, cross over into Canada and explore that side of the river as well. You can't gp wrong.

We visited this thousand Islands on Mothers' Day. I was admitted free while other in my group bought tickets. HATS OFF TO THE ORGANISERS FOR RECOGNISING mothers. lt really good a good thought and I thanks them again.
We went in the queue and got into the ship. It was great fun seeing all the islands amidst greenery, water and breeze. It was such a good fun and they took us round the castles and showed us all the places of importance. It was a big surprise to us seeing such beautiful castles in and around water bodies.
We were allowed to get off and get on to another boat neat BOLDT castle, This was a great ride and we all enjoyed the scenery, the cool breeze and the castles.

The Islands on the St Lawrence are filled with rich history & marvelous views on both sides of the river. Castles in New York state! Take a boat tour from Alex Bay and you'll enjoy a great afternoon enjoying the natural beauty.

We took the boat tour of 1000 island and really enjoyed the scenic views and the entertainment. Make it a point to visit this place perhaps over the weekend and the town becomes lively around afternoon.

Thousand Islands are beautiful but if you're looking for lots to do off of the water this isn't the place to be. I didn't see alot for kids to do, and as adults we had problems keeping entertained. If I hadn't booked and paid for 5 nights we would've left 2 days early.

I had never heard of The Thousand Islands and thought that is a dressing. A co-worker recommended it and I am pleased we went. Was wonderful to say the least and gorgeous too.

What a beautiful area....my first time here. You must take a boat tour to get the full beauty of the St. Lawrence. You cross between NY and Canada without knowing unless your guide tells you. We saw a house on one island in Canada connected to a small cross-over bridge that was in the US. No island is divided...each in its own country.

Loved our Two Nation Scenic Boat Tour with Uncle Sam's Boat Tours. Knowledgeable/Funny tour guides. Great actually being out on the Seaway. Saw big ships moving along the Seaway. Great Boat ride!

We did the thousand islands boat tour and it was great. It was packed but not to where you couldn't get a seat. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. Whole tour was about 1 hour and 45 minutes. We didn't get off the boat for the castle tour. Def a just see for your trip.

My first trip to upstate New York-hope to return soon. Sitting here in the 100+ temperatures of our typical summer makes me wonder why everyone doesn't live there. Maybe I will buy an island there if I win the lottery.

I love the islands and all the rich history. the entire area is a true pleasure to experience. the seaway and stately homes to the tiny cottages and the shops and restaurants and all the fun festivals. a great place for romance or family fun or a weekend with friends. camp, boat stay at a local hotel B & B

Great view of the islands. There's so many to see with different sizes.
So many house styles. The cruise we took was great it was a little over an hour with breakfast on board.
Highly recommend.

We drove around from Cape Vincent, then went all the way to Alexandria Bay along the water front area.
This area is really nice and with beautiful water view... The sunset is great.
River walk is short but nice access to see the castle and other islands.
Nice town with finest friendly people in town, especially the lady at one of restaurtant across from River Walk sign.
thanks :)

One needs to visit this place to admire its beauty heritage and scenery
On our way to niagara falls we did a de tour to thousand islands
It has a total of 1800 plus islands which are private owned and surround by river channels
One can take the boat tours to see and listen to the history of this place which included the boltd castle and other famous people who owns islands here
Spent a day here and enjoy the nature and the boat ride

Went last weekend to tour the island. It’s a very touristy area with a lot of tee shirt shops and eateries but shouldn’t be missed. It’s what adds to the charm. We had pizza at a little shop on a side street and it was very good. Much better then Jersey pizza. We parked at Uncle Sams since we took a cruise but there is metered parking (25 cents for 30 mins) . This is pretty much a day trip if your in the area, no need to plan a whole weekend here. If you have time take a ride down route 12 through the small towns, Cape Vincent is a hidden gem.

This is always a great time with so much to do and see. I've been coming here since I was a baby and it really hasn't changed which makes me so happy. It's a quaint and beautiful place to visit. Great food, ice cream : ) and drinks. Boats to rent and tours to go on. Or just walk around and shop. I will always love it here

The four circle rating pertains to the 1000 Islands themselves. 1000 Islands Scenic Tours was exceptional, ••••• + Aside from water sports, which, after summer ends, also end, there isn't much more to do.
So happy that my husband decided to book a private boat tour of the 1000 Islands in Alexandria Bay, NY. The bay is part of the St. Lawrence River between Canada and the US.
Ed Peters is the Captain who picked us up in his pontoon boat. He was extremely knowledgeable about both the history of the islands and the history of those old mansions that still remain. I say still remain because during the 100+ years since the mansions were built they have been passed down to family members. But the taxes and cost of upkeep of the mansions caused many of the descendants to abandon the mansions which were eventually torn down.
One word of advice, bring a form of ID with you. I left my ID back at the hotel. I didn't that we would be crossing the border and entering Canadian waters. Before we knew it we had the RCMP border patrol pulling up to the boat. They were really nice and were content to take our husbands' ID's to run a check.
I highly recommend Capt. Peters' tour.

This is a wonderful area to visit, loads of history, lots of restaurants,
Be sure to take a 1000 Cruise by one of many cruise boats in the area,
Visit Boldt Castle, Alexandria Bay has lots of Hotels and Motels.

It is not a place to visit must, and I was not expecting much. Nice nature and clean water. A lot better than expected. Great place to visit.

We visited here but realized that a boat is really the best way to see the islands. If someone is visiting by car and not interested in a boat tour then the best way to see them is to take Hwy 12 north towards Ogdensburg and to stop at the scenic lookouts along the way (or alternately go to Hill Island in Canada and go to the tower.) In truth though, although ti is such a small area, it is easy to understand why these islands are so sought after and why the region is protected by numerous parks.

Loved touring the islands on a boat tour. Beautiful scenery and interesting sites. The Thousand Islands is a beautiful and unique area.
Houses totally surrounded by water! Late June was a great time to visit.
We visited Boldt Castle and highly recommend it as well.
nice stopover spot
Cute town to visit but not much there. Most restaurants were closed. beautiful area to stop by briefly. We were on way back from Toronto. There were no tours available when we got there on a sunday afternoon. which was strange that this is considered a tourist town Don't plan an entire weekend here.
