Splendid drive...narrow windy road...so driver's need to pay attention. We were too early on September 28 to have leaves in color. Maybe next time. Great views of Lake Michigan, forest, old style homes and farms

We decided to take the scenic route from Mackinac Island to Petosky for our Summer vacation. I had lots of recommendations to drive thru the Tunnel of Trees. It was a great choice. Very relaxing and beautiful. I would suggest you use much caution. The road is very narrow and you share it with other cars, motorcycles and bicyclist. Use caution.

We found the Tunnel of Trees disappointing. It is a road lined with trees, but actual tunnel effect is pretty brief. We did enjoy lunch at Legs Inn in Cross Village, sitting in the garden with a beautiful view of Lake Michigan, so all was not lost.

This was a scary drive and not worth doing. There are far much better drives to do in MI.
It's basically a one lane road ---this past week there was even a sport's car race happening! There was more then one occasion I felt that someone was going to crash into me!
Run run far away from here!

Nothing spectacular. The trees before the tunnel looked better. I thought it would be more picturesque but it wasn’t. Breaks between trees too. Save your time,

This drive is so pretty. And there is a cute little cluster of shops along the way that includes a bonfire out back. Be ready to go slow and enjoy the scenery.

There is no doubt this is a beautiful drive. We took it on our way to eat at Legs Inn on a Sunday morning. Maybe the fact that it was a Sunday is a partial reason why my review is lower. I do wonder if I had been on this road during the week when others are at work if the experience would have been different....maybe keep that in mind when scheduling your events.
It is a very winding road and, at times, it is quite narrow. The driver must concentrate, which is kind of a bummer for the driver if it is the first time going through. I do not get motion sickness or car-sick, but a friend with us did suffer from that. The biggest challenge though, that kept even me as a passenger a bit stressed, was the number of bicyclists on the road. I know that bicyclists may share roads, but there were times it was just downright dangerous. There are sharp curves, oncoming traffic, and all the sudden a bicycle. Even going the recommended speed is too fast at those times. There were also places where people who live on the road stood IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LANE chatting with neighbors. We had to come to a complete stop to wait for oncoming traffic before we could pass the neighbors chatting on the road. Overall, our experience was mediocre and we took a shorter route home.

Beautiful adventure driving thru the Tunnel of Trees just before dusk October 2, 2020. We drove from Cross Village to Spring Harbor. Colorful trees, sunset of Lake Michigan was spectacular, beautiful homes, wildlife grazing in the open fields - this was such a relaxing road trip. Highly recommend. I’m sure it’s something beautiful to experience in every season.

This narrow, curvy state highway is a classic! If you go, be sure to see it during the fall when trees are at their peek colors.
BREATHTAKING!!

We took this drive on Saturday, October 22 and are so glad we did! We began our trip at the northern end of the trail and were pleased to find that we had chosen correctly, traffic from the south was quite heavy. The trip can be done in under an hour, but you should take longer and enjoy the many stops along the way.
The only disappointment was that Leg's Inn was closed for the season, but appreciated that their grounds were still accessible and we were able to take some spectacular pictures. We also enjoyed our stop at Pine Hill Brewery for wine and beer tasting and a delicious meal. We plan to visit again soon!

Fun to see the lake and cabins/houses along the way. Fall time the trees will be amazing. I would recommend taking a drive.

Narrow beautiful road with trees forming a lovely border. Take your time driving this road that is preferable to being on a freeway or a State Route. There is no place to park and walk around other than at the towns you pass.

Whether one chooses to drive slowly along the 20 miles of this historic highway hugging Lake Michigan or bicycling, the experience is breathtaking. Be sure to bring your camera. The stretch of M-119 called the Tunnel of the Trees extends from Harbor Springs north to Cross Village.

I would highly recommend this drive to anyone that has a little extra time. It was worth it! The whole time I felt like I was in old Michigan and it was beautiful. Definitely one of the highlights of our Michigan vacation. Be sure to stop in Good Hart at the general store and pick up a snack. My son saw a black squirrel there and talked about it all day.

This is a cool drive - but very busy on a Saturday in the fall. And it is also sort of long. But it's nice, very nice

if your looking for a twisty ride through a tunnel of trees this is the place. If youre looking for fall foliage beauty this isnt the place unless uellow and brown is your thing. Ive seen more vibrant colors on the drive into work.

Pretty vacation homes along Lake Michigan but nothing spectacular. There were no signs to let us know we were on the right road but we were guided there by Google maps. It is pretty but we must be spoiled because our street at home is a tunnel of 20 yr old pinoak trees, but we don’t have the lake!

This was a trip to remember. I calming car ride with the family. A must ride thru Michigan nature!!!

A friend just happened to alert us to this magnificent site. The leaves were near peak so the color was spectacular. A great drive through a tunnel formed by beautiful trees. I am so glad we found this drive. It is a wonder! Enjoy

I just didn't get this? I guess depending where your from it will impact you differently. This scenery is typical everyday for us so it wasn't anything out of the norm for us. Don't get me wrong, It was a nice ride and all but we didn't need to drive over 300 miles to see what I see everyday on my driveway.

The color was not quite what I would call peak yet, but we can't control mother nature. I am sure it is beautiful when at peak. The bad part is that everyone is driving it at the same time so it was a slow parade of cars in both directions which takes away from the picturesque nature of the area. Maybe the traffic is less during the week.

We did go through the Tunnel of Trees a few years ago and it was out standing. There are several small businesses to see during the trip and we did end up in Harbor Springs. A great place to visit. We did stop for coffee and lunch at a small restaurant ( Can't remember the name) We plan on staying spending time there next summer. At Best Western Location.

Drove this highway in the past, decided to do it again. This is a nice drive, just wish it opened up more to lake michigan. Tunnel of trees may be more optimistic. It's more like driving through national park land. Many spots the sun is visible through the sky. I would say if you had other attractions don't give it up for this...

"Tunnel" is a clever local marketing ploy that really just means they have a lot of trees along a narrow road. There is a small area just north of Harbor Springs with trees that form a tunnel, but at least 80% of the drive is just a lot of trees along the road, the same as hundreds of other roads in Michigan, where they are designated as Natural Beauty Roads (search on that term for more info). Not sure where all the high ratings come from, unless those folks are just not accustomed to trees along their roads. It's worth seeing if you happen to be in the area, or on the way to a great meal at Legs Inn, but otherwise don't go out of your way to visit the "Tunnel" of trees.

Drove through the tunnel of trees as part of our fall colors road trip. The leaves haven't turned completely, mostly greens mixed with yellows, and peak colors are atleast a week away. But the drive was fun nonetheless. We started at Cross Village and drove south on M119. Traffic was sparse when we drove, but we pulled over for any vehicle that was going faster than us. The roads leading into and out of M119 had great colors though, most of them near or at peak this week.

I'm sure this would be a beautiful drive in the fall. Lots of trees, winding road. Lots of houses to look at but no where to pull off to get views of the lake when there is a view.

We met a couple from Michigan, while we were on vacation in Hawaii. They recommended this drive and since we were here we decided to do it. We were a tad early in the season to appreciate its full splendor, but it was still quite enjoyable. The Trillium flowers were in bloom all along the floor of the woods and this was worth seeing. The town of Harbor Springs on the south end of the drive is beautiful and fun to walk around. We stopped at the Good Hart General Store on our way back along the same route. Very cute store/post office that had the most delicious fresh baked cookies. Worth a stop!

We started at Cross Village and followed 119 South, it’s well marked so it’s easy to find. The road is twisty and hilly, it’s very narrow with no shoulders. Lots of trees, lots of nice views and gorgeous homes. Plan on driving 30-40 mph. Keep watch for on coming traffic around bends. Most part it’s easy to drive and 119 flows right down to Harbor Springs. From start to finish we did it in 45 minutes, we didn’t stop but there is a brewery and winery along the ride. Well worth the time and I bet during Fall it would be gorgeous.

I’m sure this is a beautiful drive in the fall and it’s the change in colors. It’s a road that goes nowhere lol. It was never ending winding road. I didn’t do so well with that.

The trees were a let down as we were early for the fall colors there. There were so.e interesting historical sites and some beautiful views of the lake.
The trees did not form a tunnel except in a short part of the trip.

My mom and I take a road trip each summer from Mackinaw City to Harbor Springs. The tunnel of trees is a must see! It's like riding under a canopy of trees and you go through CrossVillage and Good Hart. Along the way you encounter twisty, narrow sections of road and many backdrops of the Great lakes. Take your time and absorb all of the beauty this roadway has to offer!

We were glad we went for a drive to see... The colors of the leaves were beautiful and the views were amazing. We got several nice photos.... We also stopped at an amazing place called Pond Hill Farm and spent almost half the day. Check them out, your welcome in advance.

Stunning trees, beautiful views and truly a spot away from it all. It may only be 20 miles but it takes time to drive through and there isn’t much once you get to Cross Village.

We went to see the fall colors. Not too much yet but the drive is still beautiful. Take the lower shore drive as it is closer to the lake. We will go again.

The trees make a lovely canopy over the road for miles on this beautiful drive on M-119 from Harbor Springs to Cross Village. The road is winding making it a favorite for cyclists and motorcyclists, so move slowly and enjoy the view. To the east side of the road you’ll see the beautiful waters of Lake Michigan with several opportunities to pull over for a picture!

The Tunnel of Trees is interesting. It’s a State highway that is lined on both sides by mature trees that create a canopy over the road. Very nice in the fall with the color. It may be about two miles and had very nice homes both older and newer along the route. You will enjoy the scenery of Lake Michigan along the way.

Although the tress are not turning yet, the drive today was beautiful. The winding road, next to the view of Lake Michigan was just wonderful. We are going back in a couple weeks to do it again when the autumn foilage is in full bloom!

Forget the tunnel of trees and take State Rd. The colors are really brilliant there and the road is WAY wider

The perfect alternative route from Petosky to Mackinaw City! Great views along the lake. Just beautiful. Only added 20 minutes to our drive. So worth it!!

This is an absolute must adventure. We rode our Harley from Cross Village to Harbor Springs and back. Views are stunning and the homes are amazing. Plan to go back for fall colors. Stop in Legs Inn in Cross Village for good polish food and beautiful views of the lake.

We were staying in Petosky for a few days and driving through the Tunnel of Trees was a must for us! What an enjoyable and picturesque driving for our final destination the Legs Inn in Crossville. Along the way we stopped at the general store and gift shop, which added to the atmosphere of driving on a road too beautiful to describe! We drove the Tunnel of Trees in August, with the green trees acting as a canopy driving along. I would imagine driving the Tunnel of Trees during the Fall season would be breathtaking! Don't pass up this drive while in the area! You will enjoy it immensely!

I have done the Tunnel of Trees many, many times ...it is a very slow driving tranquil 20-mile 1-1/2 lane beautiful winding scenic drive along a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan and is gorgeous anytime of the year, but the carpet of Trillium in the Spring, and canopy of humongous hardwood trees during fall color is exquisite! Lunch or dinner in Cross Village at Leggs Inn is the icing on this journey.

We checked out M-119’s Tunnel of Trees which is a 16-mile scenic road that begins in Harbor Springs and ends in Cross Village. It is very overrated and did not really see 137 curves they advertised but it was quite impressive when I saw the drone video advertisement on the internet.
To add negative experience, many tourist cabins and locals placed big stones on the shoulder of the road so that cars can not stop and take photos of somewhat decent views and curves on the way. Narrow road and busy traffic too.
Don't waste your time here, go up to Upper peninsula, views are 100% better than here.

I bugged my family for years that I wanted to see the Tunnel of Trees. And to tell you the truth, I can only imagine the beauty of this drive in the fall... It must be spectacular. The views in November were gorgeous. The lake can be seen along the way and there were plenty of locations to stop and take gorgeous pics. A country store was a hit. The children loved seeing a more relaxed and country aspect high above the water. This is definitely a trip to do again... but at the peak of color in the fall. Don't miss it. It's a gorgeous drive.

Probably the best part of my time up here. The views of Lake Michigan and the lush trees are just gorgeous and breathtaking.

Highly recommend this if you're in the Harbor Springs area. Residents there said it is especially lovely in the fall. At the end of drive, we stopped at Legs Inn, a very rustic place built by a Polish immigrant with lots of wood carvings and good Polish food. We stopped for appetizers and would recommend the smoked whitefish and potato pancakes.

We were expecting the trees to be in a tunnel during our drive but there were only a few spots that this actually happens. It is a tree lined, peaceful and scenic drive, just not a tunnel effect. I was expecting to have places to pull off the road to take scenic pictures but most places that had panoramic view were private property. The roadway is narrow and winding. We did pull into a driveway a few times to let cars pass. I was surprised that there were so many homes along this roadway and so many for sale signs. I actually think we saw prettier trees along route 131.

If you want to see something different take a drive through the Tunnel of Trees. 27 miles...it does take some time but the views are worth it.
Also stop at Hart, MI and visit the Good Hart General Store and Post Office. Great place for a quick lunch or a bottle of water.

Gorgeous Fall Drive along the lakeshore and through lots of beautiful trees. The road is a bit narrow - but the drive is worth the time!

This was a pretty drive on a lazy Sunday morning. It was not spectacular, but something you might not find in different parts of the country. I bet it would be amazing when the trees change colors.

Fall colors are spectacular right now! We had a beautiful drive north along the lake. Road is tight for two cars so try to let drivers in a hurry pass you so the views can be enjoyed!! We just put location in our gps and the drive was beautiful!!

The road narrows and is curvey and hilly and bicyclist made it difficult to navigate. The road I lived on was like in the coutship of Eddies father this was not a canopy of trees as in where we live.

Definitely worth the drive if you are not in a hurry. We started at the top in Cross Village and did the 20ish miles down 119 towards Harbor Springs. Was a lovely, scenic drive of riding through the forest with the veiw of Lake Michigan and many beautiful homes. The road is quite narrow so would not recommend in a big class A etc. Nice drive.

For those that live in Michigan, you can get the same drive on any back country road with trees. Sure, the lake is sometimes visible and nice...but it's just the same lake over and over. The drive north of Traverse City on 37 to the Mission Point lighthouse was much more scenic and enjoyable. Ok, but not a highlight of our stay in Petoskey.

Gorgeous drive with many scenic views. Trees still had lots of color for many picture opportunities!!

We happened to pick the perfect time for our trip to Michigan from about Traverse City north. The southwestern part of Michigan was pretty and starting to change, but from about the midwestern section of the state to the north was spectacular. We were headed from Traverse City to Mackinac Island, and this was not on the route that a GPS would probably take you. However, if you do your research, there is a series of towns on M31 that will lead you right there and the place itself is on Mapquest. Definitely worth the drive. The road is very narrow.

We were not fortunaate enough to see the leaves change, but the drive was still very beautiful. Took the 27 mile drive twice while we were staying in Petoskey, but the leaves just weren't changing much for us. I would recommend calling first to find out what the colors are doing. on line it said that the colors should have been in their peak during our stay, but alas the computor was wrong. Still worth the trip though.

This is a really nice drive along the lake. The trees are very beautiful. The lake peaks out here and there. The houses along the route are very nice. Its a fun easy drive.

Having done our share of walking around Harbor Springs we decided to hop in the car and take a drive through the Tunnel of Trees. The entire route runs just north of Harbor Springs for 14 miles / 30 minutes and ends at the quaint little hamlet of Good Heart. The views and the canopy of trees are a great combination. Driver, keep your eyes on the road as it winds and the drop off is steep. Be sure to stop off at little coffee shop along the way.

Great drive with spectacular views. A few places to stop and take photos and take in the view. Even when the tress are just green it's still beautiful.

The drive is a very interesting one. Very narrow road with lots of traffic. Unfortunately the peak color is probably 2 weeks away in this area. We stopped at the nature center on 119 and it was interesting. I would recommend going back down C77 when you head south. The color was better on that road as it is inland a ways.

We had been told while visiting some friends in the area, that as we travelled down to Traverse City, MI from Mackinac Island, we should not miss going through the "Tunnel of Trees." It WAS scenic, but no more scenic than other country roads we'd been on during our 3-month long summer road trip. However, we couldn't really appreciate the scenery because the drive was too harrowing with our truck and 25' trailer. This is basically a little-wider-than a one-lane unstriped road, and there is little to no shoulder to move off on if you meet an oncoming vehicle. We were really lucky that we didn't meet but an occasional car coming from the opposite direction. Don't know what we would have done if it had been a truck or worse, an RV. There may have been some sights worth seeing on the way, like little cafes or antique shops, but didn't notice because of how stressed we were in navigating the road. Plus, the ground between the road and the lake is so heavily forested that you can't even see the water. For sure, DO NOT DO THIS DRIVE in a large RV, like a Class A or diesel pusher! We did this drive on a Thursday in mid-August.

I love nature and have some stunningly beautiful moments on other parts of Michigan, but for me, this NON-Tunnel was a huge fail. The fact is, the road is narrow so the same trees that you find on all the roadsides of Michigan or any wooded northern state are just closer together and some meet in the middle. There was no point in the 8 mile trail when the sky was not visible overhead, so for me, that is not a tunnel (and this was in mid-summer, full foliage). Of course, it would be lovelier in autumn and if you are from a tree-starved part of the world, go and enjoy! But anyone who has driven an Adirondack byway will not be impressed.

This is a nice trip and wonderful views. We wish we had been there during the fall colors. My wife gets motion sick so we took it slow. Be wary if you have a motion sick prone traveler as this road is narrow and curvy

We went Thursday October 17, 2019
The road is very tight and curving in some spots. The colors were not anything to talk about. We had better colors when we ended our tour and drove down Robinson Rd.
I hope it was just wrong timing for us.
So we drove back to Indian River Michigan and had a much better experience seeing the fall colors.

Drive slow Nd watch where you go. Good architecture, wonderous views of lake and end at the Inn of Legs

We loved this tree-lined drive where you feel like you are in an enchanted forest of great beauty! Its so worth the drive especially in the fall where the colors are gorgeous!

We enjoyed the Tunnel of Trees. Beautiful, relaxing drive with gorgeous fall colors. We went in October and as the route starts in Petoskey, there is always construction going on so be prepared for detours.

Took the road due north out of Harbor Springs down the road locals call the “tunnel of trees M119”. This route goes right along the lake on a road that NO LARGE camper vehicle should ever take. Lucky for us the tourist season is over and thus traffic on the road (just barley wide enough for two vehicles) was minimal with a posted speed limit of 40 MPH but where best you can do is 25 MPH. With all of the twist and turns in the road, we would call it an excellent road trip for motorcycles (observed a number).
The homes all along the road were mainly large estates with most looking closed up for the season --- Wow all those great views going to waste!

We have done this ride on a motorcyle and a car. Very scenic of Lake Michigan and the homes. We take it from Petoskey to Cross Village. Stop in Good Harbor at the general store.

We were on our motorcycles and everyone said this was a beautiful road to travel. So we took this route up the coast.

Had a lovely visit! Wish we could’ve stayed longer. The Fall Colors and views from every angle, in every direction are breathtaking! Absolutely PureMichigan!

My husband and I really enjoyed the drive. It was beautiful. Along the drive we saw deer and turkey. Along the drive there was a pull off with a great view of Lake Michigan.

This is a road you should not travel if you are in a hurry. The road twists and turns along with being narrow. There were times when large trucks were coming the other way and we had to get way over on the shoulder of the road. This road would be wonderful during the fall when all the trees are in color but we did enjoy the trip.

During a long weekend trip we made the M-119 drive from Traverse City to Mackinac Island. It was a beautiful journey as trees towered us and we enjoyed the winding roads of water, sunlight, and Mother Nature. Keep in mind, I am not the outdoor type, but this drive was very relaxing and provided a nice scenic route to my most favorite place in the world, Mackinac Island. Whether it's a Sunday afternoon, vacation, or you're just looking to get away from the hussle of everyday life, this drive is very nice! It takes longer than the GPS states so make sure you leave extra time. Also be cautious of the potential of getting stuck behind a slower driver of you have a set arrival time (such as a ferry schedule) as it can take longer than usual to get there. Overall, a worthwhile trip and certainly worth the extra hour!

Very busy road. 10/08/2017 colors have not changed much. Some funky antique stops along the way. (That was fun) There was a little village that had a restaurant called "Old World Cafe" a must stop for sure! Nice shore line views as well from Mackinaw City to Harbor Springs. Advice....do not go on a holiday week-end.

We drove this for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed the views of Lake Michigan and the many beautiful homes along the way. The tunnels are so relaxing to go thru and be sure to stop in Hart on your way to Cross Village too. We drove this road both ways so we could enjoy the trip twice.

This is a peaceful drive through the northern woods. The trees reach across the road so that you drive through a natural tunnel. The forest is so close to the road that the drive is effectively an automobile hike. Lovely views of Lake Michigan and interesting small towns lie along the way. This is not a trip for those interested in the fastest route or frightened by narrow roads but it is a trip well-worth the making.

Great for the passenger, driver needs to concentrate on this narrow winding road; maybe 20 miles. Probably fall color tour would be optimum time to travel either way.

We saw this as something to do and we are glad we did because it was absolutely beautiful trip into nature. Would definitely do again in the fall, but it was still beautiful in the summer.

This was amazing! It was so cool to drive thru the tunnel of trees, beautiful colors, scenery. I cant wait to go back I don't think we drove above 25mph.

A very worthwhile drove through the forest one one side and the lake on the other. Beautiful homes and interesting scenery. Worth the 30-40 minute roundtrip

I had my little sports car for my road trip, so the Tunnel of Trees was a highlight for me. No need to be in a hurry or anything, but it does bog you down when a huge travel trailer and a bus are in front of you. I pulled off and got some distance between myself and the bus.
The road isn't wide, so you have to pay attention. There are also trees right at the edge of the road. Again, this isn't the Tail of the Dragon or anything, so take your time and enjoy the views. It's very pretty.

Sigh. I hate to say this but I should have listened to the reviews that said it was overrated. In the fall, I’m sure it’s gorgeous but it’s a view you can see 1000 other places in the US. We hiked a couple of places that were beautiful but again, not anything you couldn’t find a bunch of other places. Probably part of my issue was that we stayed overnight and drove completely out of our way to go through. Would not do again. And the small towns sprinkled along the way? Cute and quaint but very very very small. The view of the cross with the lake in the background at Cross Lake was beautiful (as was the neighbors garden right next to it).

The name understates. It's 20 miles on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. The Pebble Beach of road biking. The trees and the curvature of the Earth are the only things that keep you from seeing Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan the whole way. In summer one sees much on a bicycle that you would miss in a car!

The Tunnel of Trees is beautiful and was almost at peak fall color when we drove through. There are ample areas to pull over to take photos. The area is a two lane, paved road, and feels very narrow. There are cottages along the road on the inland side and it is an extremely popular destination. I was there on a week day and there was still a lot of traffic. It did move along well, but you need to watch people pulling on and off the road. Traffic did prohibit me from getting some of the photos I would have liked.

Tunnel of Trees is a 20 mile two lane stretch of M-119 between Cross Village and Harbor Springs. It winds through a canopy of tall, mature trees which parallels Lake Michigan to the west. There are some gorgeous homes along the drive set back from the road and a few little places to stop that you will miss if you blink. We went in June and it was a nice drive but I was underwhelmed I plan to do the drive again in the fall which I am sure will be stunning.

This was a very pleasant drive along Lake Superior and through the surrounding forests. The homes along the route vary in sizes and opulence.
Be aware: the road is narrow. There is enough room for cars to pass but there are no lines and some people drive too fast.

This is a beautiful drive. We were traveling from the Mac bridge to Traverse city. This is a 20 mile drive through the woods and along the lakes shore at times. It begins in Harbor Springs off 31 and ends at “the famous Legs Inn” (great Polish food) it is a winding road that is about a car and 1/2 wide. Harbor Springs, Charlevoix. Petosky, Elk Rapids are all lakeside towns worth visiting.

On a Fall weekend, It is a very scary drive as the oncoming traffic is almost non-stop. The paved road is just a hair wider then a one lane one and with one curve after another. You are constantly pulling over to the side allowing the right two tires to travel off the pavement, to allow the oncoming traffic room. Perhaps the road is less traveled on the weekdays. But Sunday, October 8th, I wish I had not been on 119.

great drive through the tunnels of trees..even summer green can be awesome if you dont drive during fall..you have to pay attention as some of the curves and roads are tight..no need to speed at all.just pull over if you want someone to pass....take it up to legs inn for a meal or drink

Worth the trip. It's a fun drive with little places to stop along the way. We've done this a few times now and it's always fun. Legg's Inn is a must for food.

I'm a biker and have pedaled M119 (tunnel of trees) numerous times. Views of the lake are numerous as are blind turns. Bikers should wear highly visible gear and / or hve lights on bike. THis is a wide one lane road and you will be riding in the roadway. Drivers of vehicles should maintain speeds in line with speed limit and be on the lookout for bicyclists

My wife and I rented a cottage with our family just off the Tunnel of Trees, so we drove this road frequently to go in and out of town. We were disappointed at the lack of an actual "tunnel" of trees: it was very inconsistent, with trees only on one side or the other. Additionally, the width of the road didn't make for an enjoyable drive. Any other cars on the road meant slowing down to pull to the side. The drives on this road would've been more enjoyable had even the lake water been at least visible.

You start in downtown Harbor Springs, usually at Toms Moms Cookies, then head North on M119. Of coarse there are numerous places to stop along the way like great coffee at the Trillium. Of course you will have to stop in Good Heart to do some shopping. Continue North on M119 to the Leggs Inn for Lunch in Cross Village. The ride to Mackinaw from there is still pretty good but not as scenic.

Located just north of Harbor Springs, this 25-mile scenic drive hugs the Lake Michigan shoreline with breathtaking views, beautiful homes, quaint shops, and a canopy of trees that create the 'tunnel's effect for most of the drive. In October, the fall colors are magnificent! Put this on your 'must-do' list!

Wonderful lake views, fun little shops to stop at along the way, interesting homes. Winding, a bit narrow, with some blind curves, so drive carefully.

An brilliant ride up to Good Hart or beyond, all the way to Cross Village or farther North to Sturgeon Bay.

A lifelong Michigan resident and motorcyclist, I've heard many tales over the years about the famed "Tunnel of Trees" in the upper reaches of the northwest lower peninsula, so after 55 years of waiting, I decided to knock this destination off my list.
GETTING THERE
The "Tunnel of Trees" is a 16-mile scenic route along M-119 in northern lower Michigan running between Cross Village at it's northern terminus south to Harbor Springs. Harbor Springs is approximately 1.5 hours north of Traverse City, Michigan while Cross Village is about 30 minutes south and west of the Mackinaw Bridge.
If you're heading north to the Tunnel of Trees, I highly recommend taking M-22 from Manistee to Traverse City and then 31 North to Harbor Springs as M-22 is also a gorgeous stretch of road.
THE RIDE
M-119 is a twisty, narrow road that was once an ancient Native American trail that is now a designated Scenic Heritage Route. The Tunnel of trees runs along a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, and while it is heavily wooded for long stretches, it also opens up to beautiful views of the Big Lake. The Tunnel is also dotted with some magnificent homes as well as the tiny hamlet of Good Hart, Michigan and it's iconic General store.
As stated earlier, the road is narrow, twisty and hilly, and there is no centerline, so don't get too distracted by the beautiful surroundings while driving.
Our group of four motorcycles started out from Cross Village at the northern end of the Tunnel on Sunday October 16 after a hearty Polish meal at Legs Inn. Our trip took place during peak color tour season, so we knew it would be busy...we just didn't think it would be nearly as busy as it was.
M-119's posted speed limit is 45 miles per hour, but I don't think we ever got over 15 miles per hour, and there were long stretches when we were at a near standstill due to the traffic. Most of the traffic jams were due to bicyclists using the road, but there were also slow downs caused by excessive rubber-necking at the most scenic areas. And there are some very tight turns that caused some slow downs as there was heavy traffic in both directions.
Try to divert your gaze from the lake from time to time to take in some of the magnificent homes along this stretch of M-119...and then try to imagine living in one of those home and having to deal with that crazy traffic eight or nine months of the year!
The upside to the slow pace is we had plenty of time to take in the gorgeous vistas and surrounding woods, and had the fall colors been at their peak - we were about a week early - I would have welcomed the slower pace even more.
Overall the Tunnel of Trees did not disappoint, and I would recommend you take the journey when travelling in northern Michigan. But if you have the choice between taking M-22 or M-119 (do both if you can!)...I'd opt for M-22!

M119 did not disappoint- yes there were quite a few cars and some pulled over in random places but the colors were just glorious.

It was fun to turn off the tunnel road and check out local churches and views. Biking looks great based on the amount of two wheelers. To me it was a winding road with trees which was a bit over rated.

nice ride thru the trees by the coast - we went to see the color change but we were 2 weeks early due to the weather this summer - it would be really nice if the colors were there - will go back again when they are

We went to the Tunnel of Trees specifically to ride our bicycles and were disappointed to find that it was a narrow road with no shoulders and too much busy traffic to ride it safely at this busy time of year. We drove half of it and it was pretty.

This was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. With most of the stores in town closed there wasn't much else to do but take this drive. Oh but what a drive. Fabulous views of Lake Michigan from high above. Twists and turns galore. Make sure you stop in Cross Village and have lunch at Legs Inn.

This is an awesome drive. Beautiful. Just be ready to drive slowly as the road is filled with curves and edges of the road with drop-offs. If you easily get motion sickness make sure your driving or at least in the front seat. Bring a camera. Make sure you stop off at Pond Hill. See my review of Pond Hill!

We were driving from Traverse City to the Saint Ignace and thought we’d Stop by at Legs Inn for a Polish dinner. We took 119 which is the scenic drive. It was a little early and the trees weren’t in their fall colors yet, but it was still nice. The real prize is at the end. Legs Inn. This is a must if your in Petosky.

I really didn't know what to expect, but we rode through the Tunnel of Trees on our way from Mackinac City to Harbor Springs. The trees kept it cool & it fact it rained a bit, but we hardly felt it. Not a lot of traffic which was great!

Expected more, but would still do it again. Do it with an open mind and relax and enjoy the drive. We did it in a small class A RV with no trouble ( despite some advice from others).

It was a nice drive but very very busy!!! For us we went end if October and the color was still a little green and brown. We were not in a rush so when people would start to ride are bumper we would pull off let them pass. We just was to enjoy the ride.

We drove 119, “The tunnel of trees” from Harbor Springs to Cross Village MI. Such a lovely unspoiled drive. The road is narrow with the trees crowding the edges of the right of way. One could imagine it was the 1950s traveling the Lake Michigan shoreline in Northern Michigan. Very relaxing with peeks of Lake Michigan frequently. Highly recommend.

This 25 mile stretch of Lakeshore Drive is an ideal example of all that the Great Lakes region has to offfer travelers- pristine beaches, deep green forests, and wildlife. Absolutely beautiful and Pure Michigan. Happy trails.

This is very pretty, spring, summer, or fall. Avoid in bad weather and in winter as this is a very narrow, twisty road. Think of this as more a cruise than a drive--as in, you will not be moving fast--and you will enjoy. Want to get somewhere fast? Take another route. Driving anything larger than a sedan? Don't go. You won't be happy. Nervous driver? Don't bother.

After two mile my wife and I were torn to continue or turn back. The narrow road is over developed with seasonal/vacation home that block the view of the shore. There is no access to the water and I can find a road with trees many places in the US.

We took this drive while we were in the area it was beautiful the trees were changing color there were some very beautiful homes on the drive but it can be a little narrow at times but still will take it again

We decided to take the tunnel of trees through on our way back home in lower Michigan from the U.P. We started at Cross Village as it was the quickest route from M-31 west to the highway M119 that the tunnel is on. That was a mistake. As soon as I pulled onto the road there were motorists zooming my way in what seemed like it was a 1 lane 1 way road not a "highway." The road is dangerous and felt like I was trapped on it for the entire length of the drive since there are minimal connecting roads on the 30mile ride from cross village to Petosky - Tip: ONLY get on M119 for the length of the tunnel DO NOT do the entire drive as you will be dodging oncoming traffic the entire way driving about 25-30mph - the drive took forever!

Beautiful drive. We took our time driving through but needed to pull over a few times to let others pass. This is a very narrow road and not only are there others viewing the scenery but those that live on this road. We went the second week of October and the leaves were in full color. There are many great views of Lake Michigan but unfortunately not many places to walk out to see the view.

Wonderful color in October. Do be aware this is a narrow road and traffic can get challenging at times.

This is a pleasant drive under a canopy of trees. As mentioned in alot of other reviews- the road is narrow and curvy so plan on taking it slow. We drove up from Petoskey to Cross Village- even though we knew it would be slow driving, it seemed to take longer than expected. There are some gorgeous, huge homes throughout the area which surprised us and most seemed to be summer homes.

This attraction is similar to the Smoky Mountain National Park.
Why?
You have to be lucky enough “to hit the date”.
During our stay in the area, trees just started to change the colors. I knew, that they need couple more weeks to be in the “Fall Beauty stage”.
Anyway it’s worth to drive whole 20 miles through this “tunnel”.
It’s nice even if it’s green.
I recommend this place.
When you drive from south to north, at the end of the tunnel, there is Cross Village with its famous Leg’s Inn Restaurant.
You can combine these two attractions together.

Visited 4th of July weekend. I've always wanted to take the drive so we spent Sunday doing just that. Beautiful drive along the shoreline. The road twists and turns through the woods for 20 miles and it's a nice, leisurely drive. There are some nice, quaint shops along the route which we stopped at and I bought some nice things. There are many beautiful homes along the way, with breathtaking views for sure. I would love to see the view from some of those homes! I will definitely take the trip again but take the drive in the fall sometime to see the beautiful foliage. Stopped a winery on way home and that was nice as well. Take the time to take the drive!

We decided to take this scenic route from Petoskey to Mackinac, and boy were we glad we did. The road was beautiful, as it winded along the shore of Lake Michigan. We stopped at the Good Hart general store halfway through to pick up some snacks. One person in our car got a little woozy from the drive, but most of us were just fine.

Interesting roadway along Lake coast with views of Lake. It is a very narrow road that will not accommodate large vehicles, especially RVs. There is no center line so may have to drive on shoulder when meeting another vehicle. Many 25-30 mph curves. Infrequent turnouts so not many places to park off the road. A one-time experience is enough.

The Tunnel of Trees is a very pleasant, winding, thirty minute drive from Harbor Springs to Cross Village. Great glimpses of Lake Michigan as you go.
Drive all the way to Cross Village and stop at Legs. Get a seat out back and enjoy the spectacular view of the Lake.

The M119 is an iconic drive. If you are traveling from the Mackinac City area done toward Charlevoix take the time to take this route. We went in June and hardly saw a car in either direction. I can only imagine though what it might be in peak summer or fall season. It can be curvy and narrow in areas but we were glad we did it. There are a few little gift shops to stop at as well as Pond Hill Farms to sample delicious wines and farm-to-table foods.

So beautiful! Have a full gas tank. Amazingly beautiful drive. Not a lot of traffic this time of year. A few places to pull over and take photos.

Traverse a winding road through a canopy of trees. Great drive on a warm summer afternoon. Stop at Good Hart General Store about half way through the 20-mile drive. This quaint General Store has awesome home-made pies! At the northernmost point along the Tunnel of Trees stop at Legs Inn in Cross Village. You'll notice the aroma of Polish food from outside the restaurant. Check out the magnificent gardens in back of the Legs Inn, with magnificent views of Lake Michigan.

Do not miss this treasure in northern Michigan. The trees hadn’t started turning yet but it was a gorgeous and spectacular drive.

The road is literally lined with trees that reach over the road in a forest. You'll also get views of Lake Michigan as you drive. Don't drive too fast so you can enjoy it.

Yeah, it's not worth the drive. Narrow highway with people parked all over the sides of the road.
Pretty but just take other roads.

This was a great way to spend about 3 hours! A beautiful drive through the forest with breathtaking views of Lake MI. Once you get to Cross Village you must stop at Leggs Inn for lunch. Plan to wait, but grab a drink and head out to the garden. Beautiful flowers and view of the water.

The tunnel of trees is an ideal location to view fall colours , we visited the place just in time .
The place has some winery and farm on the way , apart from the scenic route the place has nothing much to offer .
This could actually be combined with Mackinaw tours.

The trees were beautiful. Had quaint little towns, but it was off season so a few places had already closed down. Go before the last weekend in october.

We love going up through the Tunnel of Trees! It's a great relaxing ride no matter the season. And in t he Spring and Summer you can stop at Leg's Inn for authentic Polish cuisine -- with a spot out back overlooking Lake Michigan that's amazing. The gardens out back are amazing as well -- sit outside if youcan!

I highly recommend this drive in the fall during those 2 weeks or so when color is at its peak. It's beautiful. I didn't realize ahead of time that the M119 is an elevated road along the lake shore with frequent opportunities to stop and look out over the treetops onto the lake. On a bright, sunny day in the fall this is a spectacular place to see color in Michigan.

I have yet to do tail of the dragon but, a friend and I traveled from Appleton, WI area and rode our bikes up to and through the UP, over the Mackinac (twice), followed to Petoskey and the tunnel of trees. It's a nice, quiet narrow road for miles, some twisties, nothing crazy. Due to the tree coverage, homes and cottages on both sides of the road, there was little lake and sky to be seen. It's just a nice ride via motorcycle. Watch carefully for oncoming flying traffic, the twisties were slightly "slick" from dew or oil (no rain that day). Stop at Legs Inn at the end, popular and very busy. Great Polish food.

The Tunnel of Trees was okay and provided excellent views of Lake Michigan. Only about half of the 20 mile stretch was covered were you get the whole tunnel effect. The road is very narrow with no painted centerline. Sometimes the drivers coming from the other way seem to forget this and it can be a little unnerving at times. To be fair, we didn't do this trip at the best time of the year. I would imagine the fall colors would be gorgeous. The roadside park were you can pull off to enjoy the views was closed due to construction. Would recommend as a check off the bucket list if you go in the Fall and allow a large amount of time to get through the 20 miles.

We went through the tunnel on October 3rd. There was very little color in the tunnel. If you are looking for that drive to have color I would suggest another two weeks. That being said there is excellent color just east of there. If you take the back roads from Petoskey to the start of the south end of the tunnel the color is excellent now.

Was a little disappointed in the lack of color, but this is a beautiful scenic ride. Very narrow winding road with a lot of stops on the way. So glad we made the trip.

beautiful drive in the fall. The colors were fantastic. The drive through the tunnel of trees was beautiful.

Very serene and peaceful! Not something you experience every day. A state treasure for sure. You won't be disappointed.

Not sure why people rave about this. It's a VERY narrow road, it's private property the entire distance, so you can't get out of the car and enjoy the views, so it's covered with trees. Oh boy. Lots of places you can go with a canopy of trees that's less than 22 miles and you don't have to worry that huge RV isn't going to stay on their own side of the road. Way over rated in my opinion.

This is an amazing little ride between two cool destinations. We went North from Petoskey. The road narrows quickly, but it is in good constitution. Take your time and enjoy the views. Lake on one side and forest and homes on the other. There are no real pull offs for pictures, but a nice relaxing ride indeed!!

There is no tunnel of trees. Just a road with trees that do not form a tunnel. We drove many hours the previous day to get to northern Michigan, and here we were driving a lot again to not really see anything spectacular. We did, however, discover Pond Hill Farm (winery) so that was a good way to finish up our drive.

This is the fourth time that we have done Tunnel of Trees on M119. It is a beautiful drive! It is difficult to select the exact time for the color change in the fall, but it's such a scenic ride that it really doesn't matter what time of the year you take the drive. It's a narrow, winding road that gives beautiful views of the lakeshore as you travel.
I do feel sorry for the people trying to drive their large motorhomes, trucks, etc., on this narrow road. It is difficult for them to pass the on-coming traffic.
We were told by a local to go back to Petoskey on C-77 after coming through the Tunnel. We did this the past two years when the color did not seem to be peaking along the lakeshore. It certainly was beautiful on C-77! Everyone should have the Tunnel on their "Bucket-List."

The "Tunnel of Trees" just north of Petoskey MI is a famous narrow winding drive that is pretty any time of year. The road is so narrow there is no center line. The winding road takes about an hour to go 20 miles from Petoskey up to Cross Village. There are no services or bathrooms so be sure to use services in Petoskey,. The road is residential winding up the coast of Lake Michigan with estates on the shore, a few views of the lake but the tree canopy over the road is notable because they grow close to the edge of a narrow road, In fall it is supposed to be spectacular but only very late in the fall color as the lower leaves of the trees and under growth turn. Only near noon or the middle of the day will the sun light up the tops of the trees for earlier fall color. Still in any season this drive is nice but if you take it in mid fall for color, up to Cross Village (from Petoskey), there is a better way back. Stop in Cross Village at historic Legg's Inn for authentic Polish food (they close for winter - this year Oct 20, 2019). Then take State Road (left off M119 just south of Legg's Inn) back to Petoskey for great fall color. State Rd is straighter but more open with vistas of hillsides covered with color and trees beside the wider road are set farther apart allowing more light to show off the colors. Way better than the oft touted "tunnel of trees" for fall color unless it is very late in the season, with most leaves already down when the Tunnel of Trees gets better.

We drove from Roscommon, MI to Cross Village, MI where we took M-119 south through the "Tunnel of Trees". Twenty miles of 'tunnel' under gorgeous trees with Lake Michigan peeking at you on your right. It was raining pretty hard the day we took this trip, but it was still beautiful. Would like to go back this fall when the trees are 'in color'.
I highly recommend the time to drive through here, no matter the season.

Although the lake isnt always in sight, the drive is lovely. The road is winding and narrow, so its a drag when you encounter a large RV or truck and have to carefully work your way by them. We were very fortunate that parts of the road were closed, which meant a lot less traffic! We drove all the way to Mackinaw and it was scenic and fun!

Quirky twisted narrow road with fabulous tree canopy! We enjoyed it very much! Views of Lake Michigan at times. Be careful of the deer crossing! We saw several. Would highly recommend the drive!

The Tunnel of Trees was a great scenic drive. The weird thing is that there is not a center line painted down the middle of the road.
We drove through in mid November so a good majority of the leaves had fallen. I'm sure it is even more of a sight to see in early Fall before the leaves fall and are changing color.
Don't get me wrong though, the drive it still a wonderful sight to see.

Although we took this drive in the middle of summer instead of the fall it was still beautiful and worth the drive.

Most beautiful drive!
Told the locals ,that they need a sign saying " If in a hurry, take other route.Take time, enjoy scenery, this route is best!"
Had one driver in a convertible, driving fast, tailgating, passing everyone.Causing people to hug shoulder.Very irritating! Have gone here for years.1st time experienced a road jerk,on this area.Otherwise beautiful ,enjoyable ride!

I love everything Michigan! We took the tunnel during peak color, but the color along the tunnel was not a vibrant as that getting to it. There were many, many cars as the only day we could go was a Sunday. I think a weekday would have been better. And don't miss Pond Harbor Farm along the way. The trees there were beautiful and the activities were so fun!

The tunnel of trees is a leisurly drive along the Lake Michigan shoreline just north of Harbor Springs, to Goodhart. But don't stop there, keep going until you reach the Polish restaurant Leg's Inn. Treat yo' self!

I was really not too impressed with the Tunnel of Trees. It was kind of a let down after the wright ups. We later went to the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes and the journey around that area was better than the Tunnel.

Very peaceful drive through about 10-15 miles of tree covered roadway with many glimpses of beautiful Lake Michigan. Can only imagine what it would be like with the Autumn color!

Though a nice drive along Lake Michigan, we were not as impressed as expected. Some places the trees did create a tunnel effect, but not during the majority of the 22 mile drive. The number of houses were a distraction. We saw much more spectacular color views on the way up and home. Nice, just not outstanding.

We followed the tunnel of trees for part of its route. The trees were starting to change to fall colors. Along the way we found a cute little coffee and souvenir shop that made the trip even more memorable!

So excited to do this! The weather was rainy when we started out. Not too much color as of yet. There are spots. Narrow country lane with no center line. Friendly people at the stops. It's a great trip to do. However, I would say to do it while there visiting the area; its a long day trip.

The tunnel of trees stretches for approximately 20 miles with 137 curves. You can start from Harbor Springs on M-119 all the way to Cross Village. It was fun on our motorcycles, even being seniors. The Devil's Elbow is a sharp hairpin curve, and there are two of them. The road is narrow, but everyone was very cautious and it was a nice, fun scenic ride. A must for motorcycle riders.

What a gorgeous drive! The leaves are still vibrant, but they are falling fast. We went Oct 28 and I wouldn’t wait too much longer if you want to see the fall colors.

A must-do, especially in autumn.- - - We have done this several times, and it never ceases to amaze. Stop at Legs Inn at Cross Village when you are done.

Purposely chose to follow the Tunnel of trees on our way up north. We were there a little before the trees started to turn color, but if you like a curvy scenic drive, you want to go.

This is a beautiful narrow, winding, hilly ride. Most cars were courteous and gave plenty of space. The views of the water are beautiful.

A very pretty drive in any season. Can be a busy road and parts are narrow with curves or sharp turns. Don’t be in a hurry. Lots of beautiful views and homes.

We were traveling north from Traverse City to Mackinac Island and had read about the tunnel of trees. We decided to trek through the twenty mile beautiful stretch of road just north of Petoskey, Michigan. It’s narrow and winding along the coast of Lake Michigan with stunning views. Fall leaf colors were just starting to change while we were there so it gave us a taste of autumn season. Well appointed homes in enchanting settings dotted the route reminding us of the northeast coast which is one of our favorite areas to travel.
It took a while considering the speed limits of Highway 119 at 25 mph and the jaw dropping views so traffic can be dicey depending on the season. We were fortunate to have fairly light traffic but we’d pull over onto the side of the road at mailboxes to let the faster traffic by. It went pretty smoothly for the most part but by the end of the journey we were getting tired and ready to move on.
It was listed as one of the top eight things to do in Petoskey and I can see why.

Go and experience yourself.
Its one of the best scenic drive in the Michigan.
Start from Petoskey -> Harbor Spring -> M-119 -> Cross Village.
I have driven through it last week in Summer and was amazed by the views. Its one of the best nature has to offer out there.
Its going to be fun driving in Falls as well.
You can drive through this and then visit Mackinaw City/Mackinac Island.
Would recommend riders and drivers to visit this route.

It's not a "tunnel" of trees, it's a twist 1 and a half lane road with WAY too much traffic during Fall color tour. It's a great road to take on a motorcycle when it's not October and is no more than a slow moving parking lot jam packed with tourists.

What a pleasure to drive the tunnel of trees M119 during off season when there wasn't much traffic and one could enjoy the sights and peace of Gods beauty. the road is narrow but I drove slow and pulled over if others were in a hurry. highly recommend you do this any time of the year. I'm sure it's more beautiful in fall, but then a lot more traffic also.

I've lived in northern Michigan my entire life. I took my wife thru the tunnel of trees location and was completely disappointed. We found that it must be a publicity stunt to bring people to the area because we have had better views and tunnels driving along the m-55 , M-18 and old 127 corridor. There was no tunnel of trees, just a very thin road with expensive homes in the area. I will give props to the farm at the very northern part of the tunnel area.... they have a unique place with great atmosphere and tasteful food and drink...

This is absolutely one of the most breathtaking drives we have discovered. The leaves were phenomenal colors. Every turn is more beautiful. Stop halfway at the general store for refreshments cavtrue gem off the beaten pathZ

I drove this about 20 years ago on my motorcycle and have wanted to return ever sense. Its a 40+ mile stretch of road that is barely wide enough for two cars, is completely covered with trees for much of it, and offers some of the best views of Lake Michigan in the entire state. We drove it again today and its just as awesome.

I expected the tunnel of trees to be amazing in early October with fall color... nope. No real fall color to speak of but it was a kinda cool drive. Lots of twists & turns with a few beautiful views of the lake. We drove about 45 mins out of the way for this and i thought it wasn't worth it. If you are going to be in the area already, then its worth a drive through.

Take your time to negotiate this winding narrow road and you have beautiful views of the lakeshore passing some neat log homes, both modern and and historic. Don’t miss the turn to the secluded middle village beach near St Laurentius church in Good Hart. In May you see carpets of Trilliums and lots of other wild flowers in this area. At the end you must at least stop at the enchanted Legs Inn with its esoteric decorations and fascinating history.

The narrow road is beautiful and unique scenery.
However, in all the length, both side are line by private properties. As a result, there is no spot to stop and honor the nature. I had to keep driving, or trespass a private property.

The only thing that would have made this experience better would be if it wasn’t raining. But even through the rain it was so pretty.

Has all the elements of a road race circut (except there are speed limits) ... great turns, great hills, and occasional views of Lake Michigan (through the trees). If you are headibf North out of Harbor Springs you will end your journey at Leggs Inn ... Yum, Yum!

Beautiful drive along the coast in mid October 2021, which might have been later than recommended, but loved the twisty turning nature filled road. Finished the drive with a stop at the Iconic Legg's Inn.

Area has go e from 80 degrees to snow flurries. No real frost. Colors limited to greens and yellows. Not vibrant.

The colors were beautiful. The drive was very nice. The road is narrow but the views are incredible.

Took the nice drive through the tunnel of trees. I drove for 5-8 miles or so to see the tunnel. Really nothing there, this attraction should be removed from Trip Advisor.

A pretty drive, but a little overrated in my opinion. Maybe a fall drive is a lot prettier than a June drive through? I was more sad about how many trees were down and how many lots for sale. Pretty soon, this will no longer be the tunnel of trees, but instead, the tunnel of houses 😓

This is such a beautiful drive. We were there during the first week of October. Some of the leaves had changed but a lot were still green. Mid-October would be a perfect time to enjoy the foliage. The homes along side the road are stunning. They were just as enjoyable as seeing the colors of the leaves. Definitely take you to a slower pace of life. You could totally get lost in the countryside there.

Beautiful drive during the color season. Then at the end a fantastic Polish restaurant! Look forward to doing it again this fall

If you have the chance, I highly recommend this route if you have the time. It’s slow paced and lovely if you like nature and water. Quaint little shops along the way, places to pull off and see the water, scenery that’s stunning along the upper coast of Michigan. We always stop in Good Hart and get snacks at their fantastic little deli and make a picnic of it.

this road is so cool!
what a nice relaxing drive.
Love the twists and turns, and the beautiful houses along the way.
you have to dine at Leggs Inn on the north end of the drive.

We were there in mid-September 2020. The drive from Charlevois took forever, between construction delays and the winding road, probably 90 minutes until we got even close to the "Tunnel of Trees". That was probably another hour drive on a narrow winding road, and even in the best places, it looked no more like a "tunnel" than the street we live on in suburban Chicago! NO color on the drive, even though there was color in other places. Our biggest fear was that we'd have to turn around and go back. Luckily we figured out how to get back on (straight) country roads. Don't waste your time - wish we'd explored Petosky instead!

We went on the Tunnel of Trees drive in Michigan in late September. It is a drive down a narrow roadway that is tree-lined. The speed limit is 45 MPH which cannot be safely attained on the winding, tight road, still, some people try to maintain that speed. Several of these motorists were right behind us in tailgate mode.
Here is my advice; drive down a forested country road in your area. You will get the same affect without the annoyance of someone right on your bumper mile after mile.

Was quite excited to drive the tunnel having read lots of reports of how great it is. Not sure what is so great, it was a nice drive but not a tunnel, and the leaflet we picked up which described stops and views bore no relation to the road. There are so many more scenic roads than this which have no official recognition

I thought it was going to be more of a tunnel than what it was. It is a narrow, bumpy road with trees on either side that occasionally will touch in the middle. Most of the road/tunnel was just normal with trees on either side of the road like most backwoods country roads. Not very impressed.

Gorgeous drive. Good for kids and photography. Beautiful year round but fall is stunning. Love this drive. Grew up enjoying it miss it being so far away now.

We enjoyed the drive through the tunnel of trees. Beautiful scenery but the road is way too narrow for two way traffic. We drive a full size truck and there were a few near misses even when we were over to edge of the road as far as we could. Nice roadside areas with scenic views and recommend the road side hike through the woods to the Lake Michigan shore.

We were heading to St. Ignace from southeast Michigan, and we chose to detour over to the west coast and drive the tunnel of trees. I tried to plan this Michigan trip so that we would hit the fall color change, but it was all green. It was still very peaceful and pretty. The narrow road wasn't too busy, and we didn't have any problems with sharing the road. I would recommend driving this route if you're in the area. Do it at least once.

You should allow plenty of time to take a slow drive along this narrow and winding road that is canopy of trees along most of this route. You will need the time to take in the beautiful architecture of the homes and estates, the views overlooking Lake Michigan and the abundant black squirrels. You also need to pay attention to your driving. This road is very narrow, barely enough room for 2 average size cars to pass each other. With mature trees right at the road's edge or guardrails as close it is unforgiving. On a cloudy day the light is blocked by the trees so much your auto headlights will come on. Do not try to negotiate this drive with a large truck or RV or towing any size trailer.

Don't expect too much. Not much colors or look out points. They could have created more lookout points and other enhancements besides marketing this tunnel in websites! Quite misleading!

An overlook
Trails .. or signs to mark them
That's all I got
Thata all I got
Nothing you can do
Why j

My husband and I found the Tunnel of Trees by happenstance. The restaurant where we had planned to celebrate our 3rd wedding anniversary was closed, and we decided to drive to Harbor Springs to celebrate over dinner. That's when we found this natural treasure. With the curvy road and spectacular views of Lake Michigan, we felt like we were enjoying a true adventure. The lakeside properties were beautiful, and we felt so lucky to have come across this waterfront wonder.

A wonderful winding road to soak in the beautiful lakeshore and wishing that you could snag one of the homes along the way.

I went into the M119 being told only that it was a road with a tunnel of trees, and expected a road with a short section covered in overhanging trees like someone's Instagram vacation photo. This is not at all what I expected! It is a long, windy road that is relatively wooded with a fair number of lake views and beautiful, fancy houses. This would be an amazing drive in a little zippy car! It is do-able in an RV (even a class A) - but not terribly fun. There are a lot of low handing branches that with brush the top of your RV enough to make you nervous, and the road is narrow enough that cars will need to pull over for your RV to fit (difficult when the road is too windy to see you coming!)

Another find we can thank Trip Advisor reviewers! This scenic drive took quite awhile because we stopped whenever our hearts desired. Mostly through woods, we caught glimpses of lake & sky, beautiful homes tucked in the trees, and small villages. We stopped at the Good Hart General Store & had a lovely dinner at Legs Inn (see additional review). Lovely way to spend an unhurried afternoon.

The temperature dropped almost 12 degrees along the tunnel of trees compared to nearby Petoskey. This is a great place to roll down the windows and just drive slowly along. It's curvy and slow moving with a few places to stop along the way.
The start of the tunnel is marked by Pond Hill farm (offering farm-to-table dining, brewery and market with some fun kids activities). Pond Hill is sunny so start there early if the day is very hot.
There is an antique & coffee shop as you head north, then the teeny village of Good Hart (offering three places to shop - two of which offer food options). Get something to go and head down Lamkin road to the St. Ignatius Church (1.5 miles from 119). Take a walk out to the beach behind the church for a quick dip (beware undercurrents--it is open water here), towel off, head in to the church to light a candle before continuing on the tunnel.
The end of the tunnel is marked by Cross Village where you can visit the famous Legs Inn (even if you don't eat here, go to the back yard and check out that view!). From here you can head up to Wilderness State Park or Dark Sky Park for some peace and quiet.
All-in all, this is a great way to spend a day!

We enjoyed the route but would I go out of my way to see this again no. If you are in the area I would say you should enjoy but not worth going out of your way. It was nice but after being in South Dakota last year it did not compare.

If you hit it just right, the sight will be spectacular with fall colors. They lake in view and the beautiful drive are breathtaking. You drive through a couple little towns with shops and restaurants. Great way to spend a leisurely day.

Great drive but pay attention the road is narrow with no middle line. We almost got hit by a driver not looking at the road on a curve.
Beautiful drive though on a well maintained road.

Took this drive a week or so after peak color, however, it was still striking and in particular at the several spots which offered scenic overlooks of Little Traverse Bay. ThereU will be drivers wishing to drive the gamut of speeds, so be aware.

I live in a rural area and can think of a half dozen streets with as many trees as this one. Road is also very windy and narrow - 2 cars can barely pass each other. Many spots overlooking the lake but local residents have filled them with large rocks, logs and anything else they could find to keep tourists from stopping in their neighborhood. Do NOT go out of your way to find this.

Be sure to clean your car windows before you go so you can get the full effect. Very pretty. In some places the lake is visible. Great views! Trail is longer than we expected. We started in Harbor Springs, made a stop at Thorne Swift nature preserve for a hike, continued on the tree trail and then turned around at Goodhart. Didnt go all the way to the end. Saw some wildlife and cool houses on our drive too, a bonus!

The road is very narrow and when it is busy, you not only deal with driving behind someone else which spoils the view but you also have to watch for oncoming traffic.

Take the time to slow down and enjoy the scenery as you make your way from Harbor Springs to Cross Village. Would be especially beautiful on a sunny, Fall day.

We found the drive thru the tunnel of trees amazing esp as the fall colours were starting to turn. A winding road spectacular forest and every once in a while you get a wonderful view of Lake Michigan from up high. The drive reminds me of a Grimm Brothers Fairytale we were expecting to see Little Red Riding Hood or even Hansel and Gretel. I would go out of my way to take this drive again. Highly recommended.

Tunnel of Tress is truely gem in Michigan to enjoy Fall colors. One can enjoy this road drive in any season because of the beautiful trees covering road and on one side the wonderful Michigan lake view. But I would say that Fall is a season to see the specacular color. You should follow the Michigan fall map and visit this road. We visited when fall colors on their peak and the view was awesome. During the peak season the Cars moves very slowly but more slow you go more you enjoy the road.

What a beautiful drive.
Driving on M119, your drive consists of 17 miles of greenery. You literally drive under a 'tunnel ' created by huge beautiful trees on both sides of road. Be ready to do lots of curves. And since the width of the road is not quite two full lanes wide, you need to pay attention to oncoming traffic.
At the end of your journey, you can relax and enjoy a great meal at ' LEGS Inn.
Definitely worth the drive. Summer is beautiful greenery.
Hoping to do again in the fall when trees are in full color bloom.

Slow down and enjoy the scenery. Yes, you will see wildlife if you look carefully. We happened to see two fawns. The road has some interesting turns and curves. A lot of great views of the lake. Take the road to the end. You won’t regret it.

I love nature and traveling and I have NO idea why anyone would bother to market the "Tunnel of Trees"--except maybe the historic restaurant in Cross Village. The road is narrow and FULL of amateur joggers and bike riders who have no idea of the correct rules of the road. Jog against traffic, cycle with traffic on the SHOULDER. It was miserable!! There are plenty of other scenic drives in Michigan--you can skip this one.

Second week in October, a Thursday, my friend and I thought this would be a nice Fall color tour from Harbor Springs up to the crossing... WOW we’re we wrong!! Traffic was heavy, drivers are rude!!! One and a half lane and drivers still were trying to pass us, missing us by inches with an On coming vehicle next them!!! This happened many times in just the first 6 miles.
By car, still not much of trip... and again local drivers are just plan rude!!!

The road itself was fine but the “highlights” and “scenic turn-offs” were non existent due to individual owners along the route buying up the land and blocking any access to the “views”. I was very disappointed.

Great relaxing ride under the trees. A bit narrow, and off camber in places, so not for race speed, but relaxing cruising. On the North end is the Legs Inn, very cool Polish restaurant. Great view and the food was wonderful!

Beautiful anytime of year but of course the fall time is the best! Very tight winding road. Travel slowly and take in the views!

If you have a wonder lust for beautiful relaxing spectacular nature drive M119 is a must see in the ring finger of Michigan's lower peninsula.
119 is not for racing and I strongly suggest you stay under 45 MPH and rather enjoy the ride at a leasurely 25. The winding narrow road courses through beautiful forest with glimpses of Lake Michigan on the west side. A tunnel of trees is an apt name for this gourgous way leading to Mackanaw City while northbound or Petoskie while southbound.
Driving can be all too stressful so a route like this is like a gift from God to relax and greet nature.
Spring is glorious, summer is beautiful, Wnter is for expert drivers and Autumn is the most glorious beautiful experience. The colours will blow you away.TAKE pictures to remember this drive!

Went on a saturday, not peak color and it was very busy, almost bumper to bumper, I didn't see much, having to watch the road as it's very narrow and opposing traffic. I was a little disappointed by the amount of development along the route. I'll stick with the U.P. version, that we drove on a Saturday during peak color and never saw a single car or house.

Great drive one to take slowly to really enjoy the views
The views are wonderful
Would make a great fall drive

Take your time and enjoy the beauty as the fall colours are in their full glory. It truly is beautiful.

Great sections of drive with a look of the coast as well as different canopies of trees! We loved the scenic drive!

We've lived in Michigan most of our lives and have never experienced the Tunnel of Trees. We drove through October 22nd and enjoyed all of the fall colors. We were hoping to go to the Polish restaurant at the end of the tunnel but it was closed....so was the other restaurant. That was disappointing.

I have made this trip several times. Once in spring, but mostly in the fall. The colors and the views of Lake Michigan are amazing! The road is a little narrow and there can be some traffic at times. If you're a person that is always in a hurry, just remember that people come here to take it slow and enjoy the scenery. It is a little less congested during the week. Check out the Legs Inn for lunch or dinner, but call ahead as they do get quite busy. There is also a beautiful paved bike path from Petoskey to Charlevoix for you bicycle enthusiasts.

Curvy, and covered with trees this narrow lane drive is fun with sime great views of Lake Michigan. We were surprised to see a lot of farm land as well. We drove back roads from Mackinaw down towards M-119 and then into Harbor Springs. We drove the entire route. I was on my bucket list and I will return in the Fall of the year to see it in its prime. A Must See!
Thanks for reading my review. I hope you decide to make this trip a priority. Happy Vacationing!

Took my partner for a long drive up the Michigan coast and it is a worthwhile ride. The road is very narrow so if you have a large SUV I would suggest you skip the tour, but otherwise it is a fun afternoon driving along Lake Michigan's western coastline. There are few places to stop for food and no gas stations along the way, so be prepared before you launch off on the trip. This is probably not a great afternoon if you don't like unspoiled forest land, but if you appreciate the rugged outdoors, this will fascinate you.

A pleasant drive but we were there before any of the leaves changed colors, so it was rather boring. I'm not sure why people rave about this drive.

We took this as a scenic route from petoskey to Mackinaw city. Stressful drive if you are in a large vehicle and not used to windy narrow roads. A Motorcycle trip through this route would be awesome. Otherwise it takes forever and as mentioned other trips though trees would be just as good in any of the local parks which would not have the houses lining the road. The glimpses of the lake were beautiful.

If you have the time, take this route between Mackinaw City and Harbor Springs/Petoskey. Very scenic and relaxing, with a few quaint little coffee shops/general stores along the way.

If you're in the Little Traverse Bay area, especially in the fall, there's no better Sunday drive than the Tunnel of Trees. As the name suggests, a narrowish two lane road leads north through a tunnel of trees with amazing views of Lake Michigan as the trees part. There are a couple of stores along the way and you can end your tour at the Legs Inn, enjoying a plate of pierogi's and a Polish beer. Enjoy!

So glad we took time to explore this route with lush woods, beautiful homes, breathtaking views, and a little history thrown in. We spotted two deer, a fox, and two black squirrels while driving. Note: it takes a good hour to enjoy the 20 miles stretch.

drove this starting from cross village to harbor springs. amazing views and unique places to stop along the way. dont miss legs inn, good hart general store or boyer glassworks all along the way.

Used to own a cottage on the road so I've driven it many times. It's a great way to go to Cross Village.

We took this winding two hour drive from Traverse City to Harbor Springs just to see the Tunnel of Trees and eat dinner at Leggs Inn. Maybe the Tunnel of Trees would have been nicer if we had done the drive during the fall colors but I thought it was hyped up way too much. The dinner at Leggs Inn was mediocre at best. If I rated the place on the grounds/scenery it was a 10 out of 10. Absolutely beautiful, however, the food was not great and way over priced. It was supposed to be a polish restaurant but there was NO FRESH KIELBASA, only smoked. The pierogies were puny and the price for a pierogi dinner was $18.99. If you must go there, take pictures, leave and eat someplace else otherwise just save yourself the time and money and skip it.

Great drive with beautiful views of the lake, we were there when the leaves were turning and it was breathtaking.

Given that some of these 'Tunnel of Trees' reviews aren't very complementary, I wondered what I'd really see. But the nearly 8-mile stretch of M-119 from Cross Village south to Good Hart is absolutely gorgeous -- and I was raised in Michigan and have been on beautiful tree-lined roads many dozens of times in the past! Further, I made my trek down M-119 in mid-September when all of the deciduous trees were still completely green. I'd guess that this extremely narrow, twisting road -- without a painted center line and almost no shoulders -- would be an amazing blaze of fall colors in late October! But, given the width of the road and its dozens of sharp curves, this is no place to be pulling a trailer or even driving an overly-wide vehicle. And getting around folks on bicycles can be difficult as well. So take it easy! And if you can only average 25 MPH, so be it. This is a scenic drive, not a road rally!

If you are in this area of Michigan, you should either drive through the Tunnel of Trees north to have lunch at Leg's Inn in Grove Village or have lunch there and drive south to the beautiful towns on Lake Michigan. But the 20 mile stretch of winding road through the trees is absolutely lovely! Some beautiful homes on the way too.

Glad we took State Rd north to Cross Village as the colors were vibrant and trees were plentiful. We then went south on M119 to drive through the tunnel. It was pretty yet mostly green and yellow leaves today.

An interesting and fun drive if you're in the area. As some reviewers have said, it may not be worth a special trip but certainly worthwhile if you like winding roads, woodlot and coastline scenery and want to get off the interstates for a bit.
The drive from the interstate to Harbour Springs was interesting too.
We stopped at Leggs Inn at the other end but didn't eat there due to a 45 minute wait.

We went the second weekend of October and the colors were not yet at their peak. There was still quite a few trees that were in the process of turning colors. We took the northern route out of petoskey all the way up. The south bound side was absolutely packed. There were people stopped everywere along the road and at all the little stores and activities along the route. Northbound traffic was surprisingly light. The major problem was trying to navigate around the parked cars, vehicles that were too big(surburbans, yukons, large pick ups) just to name a few and of course people on bicycles. The road is very narrow and people on bicycles run a very high chance of getting hit or killed. Also, people with pulling any type of camping trailer or in a RV need to stay out of the tunnel of trees, the road is just too narrow.

Such fun we had driving through this scenic Lakeshore Drive. We were charmed by the fall colors and the lovely homes. Our first visit to Michigan broadened our love for America "from sea to shining sea." Please take time to be here.

Reccommended as a day trip/ per travel book. Pretty yes. 2 couples, in a truck camper and a 5th wheel camper took this scenic road. There are no pull overs. Sharp curves making it a watch the road , not the scenery road. Many cars traveling to fast and no regard for large vehicles. Bicycle riders another concern.2 larger campers would not be able to pass each other or pull over. Many golf courses, homes / horse ranches along the side. One can drive thru most state/ national parks and enjoy the same views

What you need to know about this road is that it is two-way, barely wide enough for 2 vehicles, has no center lines, and has a pretty high speed limit, considering some of the curves. I thought it was fun to drive, but it could be terrifying for someone who's not used to driving on narrow, winding mountain roads, as I am. If you're going in fall, keep in mind that this coastal road will change well after the surrounding area. It was still pretty green in mid-October. Also note that there is pretty much nowhere to stop to take pictures.

I guess if you live in a city this might be a nice trip. We live in the suburbs with lots of back roads and trees, so this was a waste of our time. We thought that the trees were going to be growing toward each other from each side of the road forming a tunnel...nope!

This is a place I have always wanted to see- what an awesome drive and great views - even in the rain the view and colors could not be diminished!! So well worth the drive and a mini vacation away from home - I was able to get some fantastic photos through the rain drops- beautiful

We decided to take the long drive through the tunnel of trees and we were not disappointed! We were hoping it was peak season for the leaves but it has been so warm that they still needed a bit more time. We traveled October 17 so they should have already changed. Either way, it was a lovely drive and I was able to get out quickly and snap a pic. It was a rainy day when we went so the road wasn't as crowded. I can see how some people would be annoyed if he road got crowded (people go 20 mph) anyway, do it u won't be disappointed!!!

We drove this stretch of road on a beautiful fall day. Very pretty drive through the trees. We didn't go the complete way, but enjoyed the road and scenery.

We took the drive during the summer and it was absolutely gorgeous! Don’t get me wrong, fall is beautiful, but so is summer. I would also love to drive through after a snow fall.

WOW, this was beautiful, too bad the trees were not changed for the fall yet, must be too early. It was raining, but we did not know it was raining until we came out from the tunnel of leaves. Beautiful homes right along Lake Michigan. Lived in Michigan my entire life and never traveled this road. I would highly recommend this.

Overrated, but if you're just looking for a nice drive, then sure, go for it. If you're looking for something really spectacular this is not it. The road is narrow in some places and frequented by motorcyclists and bicyclists, so be on the look out for that while driving. The drive is mainly surrounded by dense trees, but only in a few places does it have a tunnel feel. You'll get a few tiny glimpses of the water from time to time. The road is mostly in good shape, but the roads that cut over to it from 75 or 31 leave something to be desired and are in major need of repairs.

The view on this drive is incredible. It is a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. There are stop areas that you can enjoy the view.

If you've got the time, definitely drive this route to your next destination. We chose this road as part of our Lake Michigan circle tour this summer and enjoyed the narrow, curvy roads and big beautiful trees!

We started at the north end at Cross Village and drove south. Some very beautiful totally covered wooded roadway - for miles!. Pay attention to the highway sing - lots of curves and you can see around then due to the dense trees. Wished it wold have been fall!

We were quite disappointed with the Tunnel of Trees and only went about 12 miles until we decided to turn off. We found the trees and overall color much better around the lakes more inland. I would not recommend the 20 mile drive just to turn around and come back to Petoskey.

The best lazy drive EVER. Glimpses of Lake Michigan, tiny towns, and gorgeous homes make it a must-visit. Definitely roll down the windows as another reviewer said here (the new asphalt smell is sure to dissipate soon), and we'll add that taking a little detour to visit the historic St. Ignatius Church is amazing. Native American cemetery and a silent, holy church, perfect in its simplicity. Beautiful beach access right there too. We even saw both a family of deer (2 fawns with spots!) and a fox, who happened to be carrying off a black squirrel. Truly a miraculous afternoon.
Others here complained of the narrow road and lack of shoulder, but really, it's all part of the experience. You just need to prepare yourself for "old school" and "drive slowly."
A walk through Thorne Swift Nature Preserve and beer or wine tasting at Pond Hill Farm (Tunnel Vision Brewery and Harbor Springs Winery) completes the day.

A must do if you are up that way. Lots of bikes, motorcycles and hikers. Plenty of stops on the way to take in the view. Drive with caution, enjoy.

We took the drive and it was very pretty, but there was no fall colors showing in the “tunnel” yet. We stopped at Pond Hill Winery & Market for a wine tasting. We also stopped at Thorne Swift Nature Preserve and hike it’s trails down to the beach. We also stopped at Leg’s Inn at Cross Village. It was a beautiful drive. We took backroads back to Petosky, where we were staying.

What a hidden gem in the upper peninsula. We were fortunate a friend told us about this beautiful drive. We were there near peak leaf changing and were great leaf peepers. What a marvelous drive! Don’t miss if you are in the area ! It is awesome

Just drive it through. You feel you are under a lovely tunnel of trees. It is on 119 and on the way to more interesting places to see.

The tunnel of tress has always been one of my favrites. The road winds and turns at random. Let's hope you do not get stuck behind a Buick or trailer doing 10 mph below the limit. Best to enjoy while driving a 5-speed stick shift. Enjoy!

Nice relaxing drive with glimpses of the lake. Enjoyed it on the road to Petosky. Well worth the time to take the long road.

Beautiful drive, especially when the the leaves are changing color. Not very much to see. Lots of trees. Kids would be bored silly.

Certainly a beautiful area of N. Michigan. Wildlife galore. Excellent area to spend October and November. If your a fudgee on a bike get the heck out of the way of cars- you don’t own the road and can’t expect everyone to go your speed as you peddle down the center of the road!

This windy road goes thru the countryside and passes some very nice houses. The trees are planted very close to the road and leaning out so the branches from each side meet and enter twine in some spots. Not very busy so we were able to pull off and take photos. The tunnel effect is not thru the entire route, only in some sections. We were thinking that once the trees get all their new leaves, it might be better.

This is an original Native Trail from Little traverse Bay which goes up the shoreline through Cross Village to to the top west side of the State. There is a white painted line to mark the edge of the pavement and just grass, brush, and forest. It is not really a 2 lane paved road but has space for about one and a half cars, no dividing line, no drainage ditches, no bike lane, and no shoulder to pull over on. The road is sloped slightly away from the center in a rounded crest style which prevents water from accumulating in most areas during wet weather. For these reasons, large vehicles, campers, and trailers are difficult to pass on the opposing traffic side, so be very careful! It's basically 22 or more miles with no passing zone. In good weather with little traffic it is possible to go maybe 45 mph safely, but with traffic, motorcycles, and bikes, it is more reasonable to be doing more like 25 or 30. In most places there is no guard rail and a 200 foot sand dune on limestone bluff drops off near the side of the road on the west side. All this being said it is just a beautiful ride, winding along like the native trail that inspired this road, traveling up the coast through some gorgeous nature preserve lands and past several of beautiful log cabins. There are some private summer estates that look out across the lake toward Beaver and Garden Islands in the distance. Sunsets are breathtaking, and the slow churn of the big waves rolling by is peacefully hypnotizing. Mid to late fall is a knockout of color and scenery. Winter is spectacular with snow drifts and ice flows on the lake. Spend some time slowly rolling by and take a moment to explore and treasure one of the most amazing places in this wonderful Northern Country.

Boring & long, and I usually love this sort of stuff. We went out of our way just to take this drive and it was disappointing—not worth it. Very little along the way, ok scenery but Ive seen much prettier tree-lined drives in the northern parts of Indiana and Wisconsin. The lake is gorgeous of course but not visible during much of the drive this time of year. Traffic thru Charlevoix to reach the drive was awful (on a Thursday) so beware if that’s part of your route.

Beautiful area. We were hoping for more fall color but sadly it was minimal. Hopefully more color in a couple weeks.
Weather was perfect and we did enjoy the experience. Definitely recommend.

On a hot July day, the ride was lovely but it would be spectacular in the fall with the changing trees. Take your time to enjoy the winding road.

This is a beautiful drive that is quite gorgeous. There aren't any pull-overs (which I think is the reason for negative reviews), but I still think this drive is worth it. I went in the summer and the trees were fully grown with leaves -- I can only imagine fall foliage is majestic during peak.
It meanders through the thick woods of the area and provides a great dose of Forest Bathing with your car rather than with your feet.
I am very glad I did the drive and I found it worth the trip and it was one of the highlights of the Petoskey area.

We were fortunate to do the drive between ice, rain, sleet, and snow yesterday the 17th. The trees were at peak. It was on a list of the best of Michigan and should be. We also did Highway 31 between Traverse City and Frankfort which was also fabulous.

We visited Harbor Springs in early autumn and enjoyed a drive through the Tunnel of Trees. This scenic heritage route is an amazing drive through a tree-lined canopy road with views of Lake Michigan and the truly picturesque countryside.

It's truly a sight to behold, and the smell was perfect. This is how fall was meant to be experienced, and I would urge anyone who can go, to go when the fall is in swing in Michigan.

We took the scenic route on our way home and it included the Tunnel of Trees. It was us and the deer. The road is not your typical two lane road. At best it’s one and a half lanes. There wasn’t a ton of fall color yet but it was still beautiful. ( more color on the trees before and after the tunnel) Because we went as soon as the sun came up we didn’t have to worry about traffic and were able to enjoy the scenery around us. I would definitely do this again.

What a beautiful ride! Beautiful homes along a beautiful shoreline. From Glimpses of Lake Michigan to full views! Curvy roads, fun on the motorcycle. Slow and easy!

It's worth the drive. It's a narrow road but a beautiful drive. It's about 25 miles down a tree lined road along the lake. If you're in the area, don't miss the opportunity to take this drive.

We drove down the tunnel from Mackinaw to Harbor Springs. The views were breathtaking and there was some hidden gems along the way. Although mileage wise the rode is not that long, the narrow street and lots of turns makes the trip longer. Overall it was nice to drive in such a scenic location.

In any season, this is an interesting ride. Beautiful views of Lake Michigan on the west and lovely homes on the east. Take your time; a very curvy and narrow road. Stop at the Thorne Swift Nature Preserve.

It is truly as if entered another world when driving M119. My favorite time is in the late afternoon when the sun reflects off the Lake like dancing diamonds. The trees are beautiful in the Summer. The drive is magical in the Winter, too.

The leaves have not turned yet. However the drive with the family was very enjoyable. Stopped at Pond Hill Farm, General store in Good Hart and Legs Inn in Cross Village!! Will drive it again next year and hopefully the leaves will already have turned.

I wished to avoid lots of cars so we went south on the tunnel of trees after an early dinner at Legs Inn. It was dusk when we were done. However almost no traffic at all. More residences than I imagined which must be a bummer for them to have cars in front of their houses all season(s). Anyway beautiful trees saw several deer and one jumped across the road in front of our car. The roads out to M119 from US31 were just as beautiful I have to say. The whole area is beautiful. Well worth the drive.

Head north for Harbor Springs and just enjoy a slow-paced tour of the trees with occasional glimpses of the water. Fall is like a storybook in colors but we also like summer as well. Try to stop on the roadside to enjoy the sounds too.

This is a beautiful drive on a narrow road with glimpses of Lake Michigan. The tunnel effect is the attraction, and it's shady and very wooded. You should definitely drive the Tunnel of Trees if you are in the area.

Very unique. Beautiful drive, backroads of Michigan. Something you don’t see ever way. We nicked named it the winding tunnel of trees

During the fall color season this is a great drive. You'll get to see every imaginable colored leaves. The "highway," Michigan M119 (16 miles) is very narrow and very windy and it also runs next to Little Traverse Bay. Be prepared to take your time. The sightseers in the cars in front of you go slow and many times will stop to take a picture. There's virtually no passing for most of the way and It's tough to get two cars by each other without going off the road and there are little or no shoulders in many places.

My wife and I drive through this once every year going between Mackinaw City and Petoskey. It is very beautiful. Not a quick route at all and not a lot of places to stop, but a good way to spend a relaxing hour. Just take it slow. The road is very narrow and winding, and you'll find the occasional cyclist on the road.

One of the scenic drives we went on while visiting Northern Michigan was the Tunnel of Trees. Well it wasn’t. We have driven on roads with little sunlight due to all the branches over the road. This one was treed with branches reaching out. But wasn’t a ‘tunnel’. A great drive anyways. The road is narrow. A bit wider than the car. Two cars could pass with care. No center stripe. The road wound along the lake shore with peeks out to the water. Here and there were houses. And some log cabins that must have been old. One of the most enjoyable drives of our trip. Be sure to travel the drive when it isn't busy so that you can go slow and soak in the scenery (and don't crash into any other sight-seers)

HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR ANYONE ON MOTORCYCLE!!
BUT BEWARE!
Very narrow road, sand/gravel on pavement on some corners, and trees (that look very painful if hit) are within inches in places from the road.
With that all being said - a well worth trip!!!

While in Mackinaw City, we found ourselves with time to burn during the day, so we decided to take a drive through the Tunnel of Trees. Due to the timing, we saw beautiful fall foliage at every turn, aside from the pines which don't turn. It was a scenic ride along much of the road. If you're a nervous driver, be wary because the road is narrow with two way traffic.
Stop in the little town of Good Hart...they have the most adorable general store with assorted snacks, drinks, souvenirs, as well as a deli counter, homemade soups and pot pies. For lunch, we grabbed two soups which were delicious! Pumpkin/apple soup! We also got a pot pie to go and had it for dinner back at our cottage.
The owner is a friendly guy and a veteran (we overheard him as he was thanking another veteran for his service).

Caught the last of the fall color. And caught the first snow of the season as well. Nice drive down narrow winding road. Not good for those prone to motion sickness. Scenic view of the harbor and makes you wonder how they get up those driveways in the winter.

Gorgeous views and fall colors are amazing. You haven’t seen Michigan unless you’ve seen the Tunnel of Trees.

Had the pleasure of taking this tour along M-119 on the shore of Lake Michigan. We waited until October hoping the colors would be out on the trees but no such luck!
So our next thought was to stop at Legs Inn, sit outside and maybe get a view of a sunset but ~1,000 other people had the same idea! It was totally packed late afternoon/evening and you had everything from rude drivers fighting for parking to hungry crying kids.
The canopy of trees is simply amazing along with many historic villages with beautiful old homes, manicured yards and views! Can’t imagine owning a home along here with all the crazy/rude people stopping in your driveway or yard though.
I would suggest doing this drive during the week. This road is very narrow and has no center line. I think the MPH was 45 but there were a lot of slow drivers and we never went over 20 MPH which was ok with us because we were trying to take it all in. Many drivers became irate because of the slow speed and tried to pass along this winding road.

A must do for anybody visiting in or around Harbor Springs. Very relaxing drive with amazing views of Lake Michigan along the route.

This is a gorgeous drive. The real tunnel doesn't start until after Pond Hill Farm. You will need to just take your time and enjoy the drive. The road is narrow.
It is beautiful any time of year, but quite crowded in the fall during peak colors.
Although we stopped at the Good Hart General store, we didn't want to wait in the huge lines to purchase anything.

The tunnel is approximately 20 miles long at 45 mph. Road is fully paved and well maintained, about 1/2 cars wide. LOL. Add extra time for the drive just in case you get behind a slower driver. We got there too early for the Fall color we were searching for. The counter lady at the gift shop in Good Hart (half-way stop) said it's one of the last places to turn, much better in late October. We ended at the Legs Inn for lunch. Our trip home to southern Michigan took us East to Interstate 75, and the color along the state highways was beautiful.

Every time you saw a scenic spot you couldnt stop and take pictures the owner on the other side put huge rocks on the other side so you wasnt able to pull off

The Tunnel of Trees drive was beautiful. The leaves were just beginning to turn and it was a warm sunny day. The scenery was very relaxing and enjoyable along the lake. Take the time to do the drive!

I love the road, and it’s very pretty with a lot of views of Lake Michigan from up high. Well worth to do.

A must do any time of the year. The trees engulf the road along Lake Michigan for many miles. A beautiful winding ride on a motorcycle or car. Spectacular views above Lake Michigan.

I wouldn't change plans to enjoy this route or make accommodations to experience it, but if you plan to travel from the South (Harbor Springs, MI) toward the North (Mackinaw City, MI) then I definitely recommend taking the slow and scenic route to drink in these views. We saw several bicyclist but the roads are narrow and with increased traffic I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending biking this road unless you are in a group.
Gorgeous scenery
If you are traveling between Traverse City and Mackinac City and have the time this drive is gorgeous. I took the drive in the summer so the trees do make beautiful tunnels. You can see Lake Michigan most of the way and there are some great scenic turn off. There are also some cute touristy store that were fun. I would highly recommend it.
