Great College

By Fiona W |

This college is very convenient for transportation. The school spirit is on point. The bell tower is very beautiful. It's also cool that my relatives had studied here before.

Campus Visit

By Michelle J |

Visited the campus and had someone show me around who used to attend. Nice campus, love the look of the library and the courtyard in front. Very big campus.

Beauty and history

By Mike L |

When in the Bay Area, it is always pleasant and interesting to stroll around the campus of UC Berkeley. The grounds are beautiful, the vibe is lively, and its history is significant.

Campus Downtown.

By Janice B |

Beautiful campus, right downtown Berkeley. Close to lots of culture with the New Pacific Film Archive and Bay Area Museum. Other Cinema's and great eating! Restaurants are abundant, from the very fine Dining to fast food. Good Bars and eating spots with live Music.

Beautiful campus, friendly environment

By FL600 |

One of the most beautiful college campuses I’ve seen. Lots of history and proud comes out of those buildings. This is one university that you can truly say has made life better for all people, environment and humanity. The history is on Cal’s side, the pride and joy of being part of this University is visible in students and faculty members. They are leaders, they do make a difference in our lives and they know it.

Wear Your Walking Shoes to the Cal Campus

By SoulfulNomad |

From the Downtown Berkeley Bart station walk east on Center and enter the campus - it's beautiful year round and feels like a park. Go bearing right (not on the main road) and through the redwoods. This path will take you to Sather Gate and Sproul Plaza which is UCB's answer to Hyde Park. Not so much free speech these days, as in the past, but if anyone is speaking, that's why. To your right is the campus store (plenty of stores on Telegraph with Bear wear). Turn left through Sather gate and walk up hill past lecture halls and you will arrive at the huge clock tower (3rd largest in the world) the Campanile. You can go up for $3 M-F 10 - 3:45 (check for hours & closures). Or hear it play carillon music (Sat) 12 - 12:15 or 6 to 6:10 -(Sun) 2 - 2:45 (M-F) 7:50 - 8 am 12 to 12:10 6 to 6:10 - now all of that is only during the Fall and Spring semesters when the students are around. Not in the summer. Look down at the view from there. To the right (south) of the Campanile is Stephens Hall, go through its portico and down the stairs, you'll arrive at a nice hillside - if you brought a picnic, to your east is the Faculty Club, or walk by the Music Dept and out to Bancroft Way. Across the street is a very nice pub (but open at 5 on weekends) or Cafe Strada. You can walk up (east) to the end of Bancroft and see International House and walk around the fraternity area, or head up to the Greek Theater, or walk down ( west) a block to Telegraph avenue, the once-hippy part of Berkeley. If you continue a few blocks down (west) Bancroft there's another nice coffee shop, Cafe Milano and University Press Books. To your right, if you continue is the stadium. There's more to see on campus but it all depends on how much you want to walk. If you walk northwards through campus, there's another area of coffee houses and restaurants at the exit at Hearst and Euclid. By all means schedule a campus tour if you have a teenager who wants to visit the campus, but you can also see many of its sights on your own.

Vibrant Community!

Vibrant community of scholars. Make sure to hike the Big C and the panoramic hills if you have time.

Beautiful campus- football visit

By worldtravelgurl |

We came to Berkeley for the University of Utah vs Cal football game. The campus is beautiful! The fans are nice and welcoming. Great place to watch a football game.

Pretty to Look At But a LOT of Unfriendly People

By Thomas_Jerome |

Beautiful campus to wander around on and absorb the history, but Holy Moses are the students and the workers here pricks! Couldn't see The Greek Theater because it was "closed" for renovation...BS.

Nothing open during holidays

By GiantsFanLosAngeles |

As an alumnus, wanted to visit the campus again. All the grounds are open, but all the buildings are closed during winter break. Wish they could have at least had the Campanile open to see the view of the city and the Bay. On the plus side, it was an enjoyable stroll through campus without too many people. Need to come back when school is in session for a different experience.

Nice place to take a walk

By Jim J |

Kind of a big, safe urban park. Beautiful architecture and grounds. Shady lanes, little forests, winding creeks and big green lawns.

Pleasant Walk

By Don C |

We walked around the campus on a Sunday morning. As expected, there wasn't much going on, but we still had a nice time seeing the campus and the views from the higher areas. Even though the buildings were closed, there were art pieces, a stream, trees, etc. to enjoy and photograph.

A great place to walk around

By Sharon H |

Lots of great sculptures around campus, libraries open to public for inspection - beautiful interiors. Interesting to see the various architectural designs, Faculty Club exterior, Sather Tower tour or independent tour: all equal a wonderful experience. Explore, and take a sack lunch or eat at several different coffee shops on campus. You'll walk away feeling reinvigorated: all for free! ;-)

A top west coast University

By Wynn R |

Just roaming around this campus is fun, Sather gate and the tower are must sees, the auditoriums and theaters host many world class acts. and the politics are world famous.

Beautiful campus.

By Stephen D |

Hopefully the school lives up to its reputation. The campus and surrounding g area is beautiful. Anyone spending any time here will get a lot of exercise walking up and down the hill.

Nice campus

By Senior Writer |

We stayed in Berkeley on a home exchange. Loved the driving and walking tour of the University of California. Worth a visit.

The best public University in the US ...

By sdkimbrough |

All the university reviews scores Cal Berkeley at the top. With that said, lots of people apply, and only a small number actually get in. It is a lovely campus with a nice mix of old and new buildings, and a mature park setting. So for those who are not the top of their class, you can at least walk around and enjoy the campus.

Love this town and University Campus the Clock tower is amazing after visiting go into town great vibe and food very reminiscent of 1960’s San Francisco

Beautiful campus

I visited the campus to get some idea for a leadership center. The campus is great and lively with students.

Campus needs work

By Hilltopman44 |

A university with a well deserved reputation for excellence needs some paint. The campus is a worthwhile visit but will not equal some of the Ivy campuses for sheer beauty. Sorry distinguished graduates of which there are many!

Berkeley

By Al Anoud S |

The location is perfect & the staff are friendly , they were cooperative & helpful by all means ..responding to our needs & make things very easy..

Great Campus!

By Sharon8here |

This campus is filled with trees! The buildings are interesting, too. The outdoor auditorium looks like it belongs in Rome. Put your walking shoes on. There's a lot of territory to cover!

Good interaction between Town and Gown

By KayusYussuf |

I stayed at an hotel around the UC Berkeley campus and you cannot distinguish between the university and the surrounding environments. The school is beautiful, with new and old architectural masterpieces. Something that stuck me was the large amount of squirrels on the grounds. It was my first time seeing these animals and I expected them to run when they see an human approaching but they stoodby, valuated you before jumping into the scrubs.

Dropping my sister off for school

By Lauren H |

The campus is beautiful and surrounded by nature but I'd be lying if I didn't say that all the students look about one more problem set away from a nervous breakdown.

Beautiful Campus

By Thomas V |

Lots of great architecture and gardens on this campus. Lively spots and some very tranquil. Some buildings not so successful, but go and see for yourself. An historic campus.

Splendid campus

By operalover939 |

150 years old in 2018, the University of California isometrisch of the great institutions of higher learning in North America. Walking around the campus is a pleasure, with Sather Gate and the Campanile as high points. Passing the Library, I think fond thoughts: I used it often 50 years ago.

Beautiful campus built into a mountainside

By GerfnitAuthor |

Others would say a hillside but I challenge them to walk up. Lush with a variety of trees. Assorted architecture. We visited on the UC FOR YOU recruitment weekend. Mobs of high school students looking the school over. All UC campuses represented. A nice visit. Too bad campus shuttles don't run on weekends.

Beautiful if crowded camps

By Seeitgo |

UC-Berkeley is one of the six most prestigious universities in the world, and the greatest of America's public universities. Its campus, though overbuilt, remains beautiful. I recommend the south-north axis from Sather Gate and Sproul Plaza to North Gate, and east-west from the Greek Theatre=Hearst Mining Circle-Memorial Glade to the Eucalyptus Grove.

One of the prettiest campuses in the US

By Berkeley_MS |

A compact campus, but not too dense, with hills, redwoods, lawns, a bubbling brook named Strawberry creek, beautiful early 20th century architecture, and the students of Berkeley - urban, engaged, but not too hipster. It's a nice place to walk around, see the political and social scene by the Sutter (Southern gate), the lightning struck but still alive 150 year (or so) old Buckeye tree by the wood shingled faculty club, wander into the Valley Life Sciences Building to see the life size T Rex skeleton, and the expose describing hominid evolution. Maybe then go uphill to the Botanical garden, or to get a feel of Bezerkeley on the adjacent Telegraph avenue, or just enjoy one of several bars and restaurant Just below campus, or the Berkeley museum and Film archive. Its a good area to spend easily half a day. And it's all just near a BART station (Berkeley downtown station).

UC Berkeley Campus

By GaryBrazel |

The campus has architecture worth seeing and some beautiful trees. They offer free campus tours. Try to be there at noon or 6:00 PM to hear the carillon in the tower. The Botanical Garden is great and should not be missed if you like plants.

A day in Berkeley is always interesting. The campus is clean and fun to walk. Off campus street life and restaurants are always gritty. Stimulating for all the senses.

Beautiful campus, stunning surrounds

By BiddyNZ |

We drove and wandered around Berkeley for a day. The campus is very pretty. Great buildings, old and new. Lush green spaces. And the vibrancy of student like.

But an added attraction - drive all the narrow roads up behind, and admire the houses. I imagined these fine houses, with stunning views, are where the professors live. We drove about and got lost but it was glorious.

Been there several times

By bobtrav |

Just walking around the campus is a delight be prepared to do some uphill trudging It's a happening join in the experience without the tuition

9to5explorer: 4* explore 5* college football!

By 9to5explorer |

It's a pretty nice place to have a wander around, the architecture on the old buildings impressive and a nice small park, with a hundred squirrels darting around. If you can, go when the football is on. Wow. They know how to put on a match and a show. Get there an hour or two early to enjoy the pre show festivities in the park outside. No shade in the stadium so take sunblock and hats for a hot day early season!

Don't miss the Carillon!

By Maria G |

University of California Berkeley is a beautiful campus full of glades and varying architectural styles. We especially enjoyed our elevator trip up to the bell tower. Unfortunately, We missed the 12:15 performance. Check out the doors on the buildings. There is only one handle because of the Free Speech movement. In the 60s, The students locked the professors in with locks around the door handles.

Take a free tour of campus

By luron |

Register online for a tour in advance, the tour is free, but you pay about $4 an hour for parking. They do a nice basic tour of the campus that goes from 10-11:30 and you can get a feel for the place. Enjoyed going up to the top of the campanile after the tour.

Huge campus

By tiredandtravelled |

With almost unlimited attractions. Driving around here is trying. My favorite is the ancient eucalyptus trees and the bear statues. There is a lot of different architecture and rolling hills, lots of eating places. So little parking.

Pink Rabbits

By Al H |

Had an unbelievable time at The Greek with The National. One of the best concert venues I've been to. Great access and just a beautiful night concert venue outdoors. I could not believe 8,000 people were there. Seemed more cozy than that.
Would visit again!

Where agony and ecstacy of true diversity can get amalgamated and ameliorated.

World wide, world class cosmopolitan metroplex! I have a B&B 21/2 blocks behind El Cerrito Natural Grocery Annex with Grid Alternative sign in garden out front.Berzerkeley is so expensive, I'm hosting profs and students from Inner Mongolia, New Zealand,South Africa,Argentina, etc.even NY!

One of America's great universities

By AVLwriter |

This university is impressive in its size and its scope of academic offerings, as well as activities. It is set right in the heart of Berkeley, so you have the advantage of a world class school combined with a hip, interesting city at its doorstep.

While the physical grounds are somewhat of a hodge-podge of architecture, a number of buildings are handsome in their own right, and the campus is softened by grassy areas and towering trees. The bell tower is a centerpiece of the campus and breathtaking in itself. There is also much to do on the campus, including sports, entertainment, and museums.

Unlike some universities, the football stadium is within the boundaries of the campus, with a public parking garage beside it, making it convenient to watch the Golden Bears.

A fine place to visit if you're in the Berkeley area.

The world knows UC BERKELEY.

By tongotuesday |

My daughter went there and every job interview she has gone on one ofthe first things they say to her is. "You went to Berkeley, You must be really smart"

Tour

By Greta P |

Awesome. If you are considering UC Berkeley, definitely go to the pre-admission talk (located at Sproul Hall). For us it was worth the trip from LA. We were very appreciative of Elizabeth's presentation (talk, insight, information).

Check it out

By Tamara W |

I've lived in northern California all my life and never walked the UC Berkeley grounds until recently. Beautiful buildings and gorgeous views. A true landmark of California.

Number one public University in the world

By GKohler |

Great school and very beautiful. The town of Berkeley sits right on the San Francisco Bay and the school is up in the foothills with great views of the San Francisco Bay. Go up in the Campanile Bell Tower to see an amazing view of the whole SF Bay Area.

Squirrel Lover

By Visiter l |

You must go there if you love squirrels. They are everywhere in the campus. You also get a nice view of the campus and San Francisco from the clock tower. It is a beautiful campus.

Lovely campus and great institution

By Roving_Bill |

A very impressive campus that must be a delight to live in. Full of character and well thought out landscape.

Willie Nelson at the Greek

By Cabo Bruce A |

My first visit to this campus. Wow very impressive. The Greek theatre has amazing acoustics. The show was over the top to say the least.

Vibrant place

By drbhairevi |

Had gone to drop our son off to college as a freshman & so we're anxious. Move in was v smooth & hassle free. Everything was v well organised & orientation was v good. Made us feel comfortable that we r leaving our child in good hands

Fun to see

By J R |

We went during winter break, but it was still nice to walk around the campus. I would have liked to go up to the tower, but thought the price was a bit steep to do so. Most buildings were locked for the winter, so it might be better to go when classes are in session.

Came to visit and was impressed, but....

By Mark H |

We came to show my son the University where two of his great grand parents graduated and had a great experience. The campus was beautiful and the people were friendly. Only complaint would be the numerous beggars and homeless people in the street leaving such a mess behind.

Don't Miss UC Berkeley: Beauty, History and Activities

By Jonathan R |

UC Berkeley is a large campus with many activities. Simply walking through the campus is a delight. There is the student center next to Sproul Plaza where one can absorb the student life, have a meal, go bowling, see demonstrations, and enjoy world class entertainment at Zellerbach Theatre. There are lovely walks along Strawberry creek and beautiful architecture spanning styles from 1868. Take a ride up the Campinile and have the best views of the Bay Area. If you are a UC Alumni from any campus, you can get a reduced day pass for the Rec Center or Strawberry Pool (in the summer). If you have hopes of having your children go to Berkeley, this is a must see. There are College Football games in memorial stadium during the season. There are intercollegiate tennis matches, track meets and soccer. There are fabulous concerts at the Greek mostly in summer. One can dine at the "I" house with students from all over the world. There is almost too much to see and do in just one day!

Gorgeous campus near the Bay

By maserk |

The campus of U.C. Berkeley is interesting to walk around because the architecture varies so much, from older, stately buildings with columns to the more modern and contemporary. The Campenile (formally known as Sather Tower) is the clock tower in the center of campus, and it can be seen from all the way across the Bay in San Francisco. There is an amazing grove of eucalyptus trees near the more western side of campus, which was planted in 1877. The campus is on a hillside, so from the top (east) side of the campus, you can see out across the Bay. Beautiful!

The school I went to study this summer

By Sihong |

As I lived a little bit far from school, everyday I had to take 51B bus to attend my lecture. The school was very big. You could see lawns and every old trees almost everywhere in the school. There was a big clock and it rang every hour. During the 2 months I stayed here, I often saw many people visited the school for trip. The classroom was very old and it seemed chairs and desks didn't update for a long term. Many students loved to go to school with skateboard and some students loved to sit on the grass and read books. There was a small hill in the north east of the campus. If you want to take a picture of the whole campus, you can go there.

The souvenir shop was open till 5 pm. There were a lot of interesting things, such as T-shirt with school logo and plush toys.

This is one of the best universities in the world. Having a trip there is really worthy.

22 Nobel Prize winners, a beautiful campus

By Sharon L |

Yes, it is competitive. Yes, some of the classes are large. Yes, the education received is top notch, and that doesn't include just the academics....meeting new people, and learning about one's potential is equally important to what is learned in the University....something that UCB gives their students the opportunities to do.

Great History

By Abel G |

Great University, quiet and very friendly people. Walked around and took lots of pictures. Would not mind taking courses there.

Fabulous campus

By permia |

A few hours we spent exploring the superlative seat of learning were marvellous. A beautiful sunny blue sky morning meant we saw it at its probable best.

Our first visit was to the Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive that had a number of engaging exhibitions.

We dropped into the Life Sciences school and viewed their mini museum of ancient fossils and skeletons.

Sather Tower is unmissable and from its observation storey gave superb vistas of the campus, bay and city.

Doe Library was fascinating, particularly the grand reading rooms. The two we saw have exquisitely crafted ceiling. In the Heyns one a great painting of Washington Rallying the Troops at Monmouth is the centrepiece of one side.

Great to wander through

By sharon33191 |

Great architecture and some nice plantings. Good for a walk away from the hustle and bustle of downtown;

The Best Public University in the World

By Darril d |

A beautiful campus with all sort of museums exhibits, performances and sporting events. A pleasant place to wander around on a warm day and experience a world class university

Wandered campus

By PJinAK |

Campus looked great though it would have been good to have bathrooms open in the Student Union. It was the day after Thanksgiving so no classes were going on but the campus clothing/gift store was open.

Beautiful Campus

By fiamma11 |

This is truly a gorgeous campus for visiting, walking and exploring. World class education in beautiful environs. Nothing not to like in my opinion.

Excellent campus 🏆

The campus it is just beautiful I grew up in the area there it is just beautiful Berkley is a beautiful spot , I didn’t go to the campus 🌴🌴

Wonderful walk on a beautiful spring day

By LeslieKchill |

As always, I'm a history buff, so this is quite an interesting walk. I live near here and several of my daughter's friends have gone to school here. Although I would not travel JUST to see UC, if you're in the area seeing the other sites, and enjoying the wonderful ethnic foods of the area (from all over the world, really) I would enjoy the walk around campus. As mentioned above, if I wanted to just see a campus, I would go to Stanford, over UCB.

Beautiful campus

By MrNicTan |

Take your time to explore the campus. There are plenty of beautiful scenery here. Trees, birds and squirrels. The squirrels are not afraid of you so you can take really close up photo of it.

There are plenty of small cafe everywhere and you can even buy some of their merchandise at this Bancroft Clothing Con(2530 Bancroft Way)

Beautiful Campus

By Philip S |

All the buildings in the campus have unique features. It was an enjoyable walk in the campus with many interesting buildings to see.

Green Urban Campus

By GlobalGypsy_13 |

Because it's 150 years old this urban campus has few parking spaces, but lots of green shrubs and trees as well as art work scattered amidst the campus. Because it's backed up to a hill you can get a good workout by walking through this campus from one end to the other. However, be aware of the skate boarders.

Lots of events at multiple venues

By NorCalBob |

Starting with the Greek Theater and Zellerbach Hall for major artists and continuing with museums, botanical garden, and several smaller performance venues UCB offers several events each weekend. There are plenty of restaurants from student-cheap to gourmet-expensive nearby. Oh, it's a pretty good school, too.

Great day to visit my Alma Mater

By Robert J |

Enjoyed roaming the campus and seeing what had changed and what remained the same after 50 years. We even went up in the Campanile, something I had never done before. It was a beautiful, clear fall day after a rainy Friday and the perfect day for viewing the campus and bay area. You could see all the way to the Golden Gate and the fog banks that hovered over Nob Hill and other high points in SF. The rain was welcome by locals as it had been a very dry summer/fall. We found a wonderful Japanese Restaurant on Telegraph Ave.

Gorgeous

By Cathy D |

Wow! We stopped here to just look around. We took a walk towards the clock tower. The grounds are lush and beautiful!

Historic Steps

By Acinonyx60 |

We had about an hour of spare time while staying in Berkeley for a family event, and decided to walk over to the Berkeley campus. It was a great idea. The Campanile is magnificent visually and aurally. Our favorite spot was the Mario Savio Steps, once ‘ground zero’ for the 1960’s free speech and war protests. Amazing to stand on the steps and imagine those tumultuous days of our youth.

Nice place.

By Pathmendez |

I went there to know, looks great, the library is impressive and if you want to walk inside you can do it.

Very Pretty Campus

By JHuante |

I was visiting a friend/student up there and enjoyed the campus very much. It's fairly easy to navigate.

Cal football

By toohuge |

What an incredible campus. Very old and well taken care of. The newly renovated stadium was fabulous and our seats were perfect.

Earn your on campus parking spot with a Nobel prize

By Will I Dream |

Earn your on campus parking spot with a Nobel prize. Yes that's all it takes to have your own parking spot. Otherwise enjoy your stroll on this beautiful campus as parking spots are hard to find anywhere in Berkeley

Berkeley!

By briian n |

My alma mater! The best learning environment:) best place to absorb the sweet magnolia and eucalyptus!

A place to definitelly visit

By Nando T |

As a university professor elsewhere I can really appreciate the environment at this academic campus. The educational quality of this institution is worldwide recognize and its location is definitely ideal: relatively small community (Berkeley) near a rather cosmopolitan city at large like the bay area.

What a venue for a conference!

By Gonzalo_de_Berceo |

I have just organized a conference on UCBerkeley. What a venue! Impressive buildings, stunning nature (impressive sequoia trees), bustling coffee shops, ...

A Beautiful Campus

By Mark Hubbard |

This historic university is in famous Berkeley, California, with winding roads, buildings set into hills, lots of students, hippies, whatever. I was there for a meeting with the Space Science Lab (SSL) and they were very accommodating as far as facilities, refreshments, parking, etc. I always enjoy my business trips to CAL Berkeley!

Be sure to go up the bell tower!

By yusqueya |

We had a great time wandering around the campus grounds - they are beautiful! Be sure to go up the bell tower for some great views of the campus and the city. It was $3 cash and we loved it. It was so clear when we were there, we were able to see the Golden Gate Bridge!

Next time we'll definitely plan to do a walking tour.

Superb

By Rabi_Sharma |

Went for a walk in the campus with my family while staying at Berkeley. Campus is really beautiful: clean, mixed of old and contemporary architectures. Sprawling campus and other facilities are great asset to intellectuals attached to institution.

Our Alma Mater

By Liars N F |

We also are donors, and have participated in alumni activities while living for close to four decades in Asia. We have helped get foreign students to Berkeley, and specifically donated for a building. I have even spoken a few times here.

Very nice campus

By mikefromwellington |

What a cool campus. My boys loved it and both want to be Cal Bears in a few years. Sather Tower and the football stadium were both highlights.

Urban Campus

By GlobalGypsy_13 |

Even in a pelting rain the UC Berkeley with many large trees, stately buildings, and the world's third largest bell tower is worth a visit. It's an easy walk from a BART station with many shops, cafes, and coffee houses spreading around the edges. The public can visit the libraries, campus museums (fee), and art galleries, but not park on campus.

Stunning University grounds!

By Corey Z |

Love this university! Wow, just to walk around and see the stunning architecture is a great way to spend an hour. Cute shops nearby.
Views of SF and SF Bay.

Beautiful School

By Dana P |

Berkeley is a really nice place to visit for a day. The campus is beautiful and the town itself is charming with a lot of nice shops and restaurants. It's also easy to get to on the BART.

Great architecture and interesting people

By Kaymtravel7 |

We enjoyed wandering around the beautiful campus, taking in many buildings with great architecture. Apparently there are campus tours every day at 10 AM, but we arrived later and decided to just walk around on our own. Definitely take time to go up the Sather Tower, with stunning views of the Bay Area and a played carillon! We enjoyed having lunch just off campus on Telegraph.

Nice Visit to University of California For Home Opener Football Game

By mini |

We went to UC Berkeley to go to the home opener game for Cal Footballl. Cal won.
We had a nice walk through campus as well. We parked in a university parking garage on North Side (Lower Hearst 1).

Scenic campus worth a visit

By glennharrold |

Great campus and some great views and architecture also great place to see the city from a different perspective - the Campanille tower is worth a trip to the top

Beautiful UC Berkeley

By jerry k |

When in Northern California UC Berkeley is an interesting and very pretty campus to visit. There are many aspects to the campus. Great buildings and multiple libraries. A hilly campus where you can cross a stream on a small footbridge or visit the tower which can be seen from miles away. Berkeley is the number one rated public engineering university in the world...a nice walking day around campus. Or walk into town for a great lunch or to shop in the small shops.

Go bears

By LckyS |

Came for a student led tour which was pretty informal and fairly short.

The campus itself is very nice.

Always Great to Visit

By Kittygal 🇺🇦 🌻 |

I've loved this campus since I first visited for football and basketball games against my alma mater, UCLA. And during my law school days across the bay, I'd escape to study at the Boalt library on occasion.

I returned for a visit during my first post Covid trip to the Bay Area. It was great to see the timeless beauty of the campus and marvel at all the new construction. Glad the old stand bys are still there, too (Rasputin's, Bear's Lair, Golden Bear, Smokehouse).

During my grad school days, we often said that you could see the bell tower from SF on an exceptionally fine, clear day. And I'm here to say that during my recent visit, I could see clear to the Golden Gate Bridge from my vantage point at the base of the bell tower. Happily, some things only get better with time.

World famous campus

By WorldTravla7 |

On the way to Berkeley over the Oakland Bay bridge a lady in my Uber pool suggested I visit the University of California Berkeley campus while I was there and I'm glad I followed her advice. It's a beautiful leafy green campus with beautiful old buildings, scurrying squirrels and a history of political activism which speaks for itself. It's on a hill so you'll need to be ready for some serious walking but there's plenty to see on the way including The Greek Theatre at the back which hosts international acts like Hans Zimmer, Radiohead & John Legend (though it was locked & gated the day I was there). I didn't realise at the time but apparently you can climb to the top of the clock tower for great views as well. A lovely place to spend some time.

A campus embedded in lush green

By Shogu |

A wonderful experience to visit the University of Berkeley campus. Very well kept, and beautiful vegetations between the different faculty buildings.

Worth a stroll through

By pdwschmidt |

First, as my authority for this review, I'm a professor who teaches the history of campus planning in America. For TripAdvisor purposes, why you are visiting matters a great deal. If you're just in town, I'd definitely walk through. The beauty of campus is the site/location, the topography, and the landscaping. Great trees and foliage. The buildings? Well...there are some engaging older ones and some important/interesting ones--Sproul Plaza is in that category, even if it isn't beautiful--and then there are a lot of rather awful buildings, in various designs involving concrete. As a total package, the campus is somewhat average among big universities, except for the site and trees. (The famous gates are wonderful.) It's worth a stroll around campus and a visit to the campanile. And it's all better if you know something about the history and politics of the place. I'm sure alumni are very attached to it.

Wish I were a student again!

By glorynan123 |

Growing up in the 60s, I had to walk Berkeley's campus. For me the history of political activism was a definite draw. The buildings and grounds are beautiful. The vibe is upbeat. True to form is was the site of love not hate protests while I was there. Loved it.

Well, my words alone won't be enough to describe how beautiful this campus is. Try to come during the weekends when it's more quiet and enjoy the breathtaking view from every single part of the campus. Be advised that it'll take some energy to walk around the campus due to the unforgiving hills.

Lively campus

Easy parking when you arrive after 6pm. It is a spacious and lively campus. We came from University Avenue.

Very nice campus

The night view of the city from the California Memorial Stadium is amazing as long as you are in the VIP Box of course :)

Beautiful campus with a long history of education, innovative thinking, and environmental consciousness. Stunning view of the San Francisco Bay.

Love the Campus!

By GOSIA P |

I love visiting my daughter at Berkeley. We always roam the campus, checking out the coffee, the spectacular library, the newly opened Gallery. Love the old buildings with such great architecture, the entrance gate, the beautiful old trees. I wish I was a student there.

Beautiful campus

By Alana G |

We visited UC Berkeley to check out the campus. The clock tower was great to go up and get some nice pictures of the surrounding area.
For an even better experience, come to watch the Cal bears play football!!

Another great university

By Dr S |

We have been on campus numerous times and always find it delightful. Most large campuses are worth spending time at, meeting students, faculty, and other visitors.

UC Berkeley - a Happening Place!

By hutchss |

Other than making me realize how old I am, walking through the Berkeley campus is always a great experience. Full of young students and lots of activity, there is always something to see, hear, read or do. Lovely campus to take a walk, surrounded by the interesting city of Berkeley!

A beautiful campus with stunning views down to the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Library especially worthwhile and the views from the Campanile.

Beautiful Campus, Great Culture, Awesome City

By TAW5 |

Definitely check out the campus if you have teens or kids in the family that you hope will go to college. It's such a special campus with beautiful trees and buildings and a truly stellar culture. Try to visit during the semester so you can get a real feel for the on-campus spirit and even visit some classes and buildings. I am a student here and truly love the campus and the surrounding area. GO UP TO THE TOP OF THE CAMPANILE (free for students with ID, $3 for non-students). You'll get a truly beautiful view of the entire campus, all of Berkeley, and the bay. It's a GREAT view that cannot be topped.

Historical and Beautiful

By Jake K |

There is a special energy that runs through the UC Berkeley campus. The landscape, the buildings, and the very diverse student body which occupies it seemed to merge and connect in such a way as to create an organic being of a higher existence. You can sense the purpose and the history that fuels this place and infuses it with an energy that invigorates you and makes you feel better about humanity's future. It's feels homey, personal, human, and a bit funcky even... it feels REAL... not sterile and/or pretentious like Stanford (manicured), or MIT (utilitarian), or Harvard (fake English University), or any of the other elite mega-campuses around the country. And, it's a public institution, which makes it doubly special.

World Famous University Doesn't Disappoint

By T H |

Made my first trek to Berkeley. My main purpose was to visit the campus store to pick up a t-shirt for my 17 year old niece as inspiration for her to apply in the fall. Street parking was tight; however, I was pleasantly surprised that there was an adjacent underground garage that led right to the store on the first floor. Since I decided to come on a Sunday, garage parking was plentiful.

One of the salespeople was very helpful in guiding me through the choices, even accompanying me upstairs. The selection of "official" t-shirts were limited (in particular the sizes), given the numerous graduation ceremonies that had taken place over the last couple of weeks. Fortunately, I found one I think she'll like.

This is one wonderful campus to stay in as any kind of student, the building are unique the atmosphere is fantastic and the social life is awesome,if you're Irish check the Newman Centre

Nice history visit

The campus was easy to get around and filled with tons of history. The parking is not easy but watch for side street. The library, gate, and landscapes are all easy to tour.

One of a kind!

By P David P |

They say about some cities, "Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there." Not true for UC Berkeley. Nice place to visit, but a nicer place to live an academic life--as a student or as a faculty member. Berkeley has so much to offer--intellectually, culturally (high brow or low brow), gastronomically, and socially--that it's not to be missed, either as a resident or a tourist.

Easy access to campus via the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system from either SFO or OAK airports (better to BART than to drive and try to find a convenient or affordable parking place.

Lots of must sees for tourists--the Greek Theatre, the Campanile, Sproul Plaza and Sather Gate, the wonderfully meandering Strawberry Creek that defines campus segments, Faculty Glade, the Doe Library (don't miss the Morrison Reading Room), Eucalyptus Grove, the gardens alongside the Chancellor's House.

Nearby Telegraph Ave (to the south) is a faded version of what it was in the 60s, but still interesting if you like fast food and and endless string of trinket stalls on the weekends. Shattuck is more interesting and has LOTS better food, both near campus and in the restaurant-laden North Berkeley neighborhood that USED TO BE called, the Gourmet Ghetto. But the best food, is a mile north, where 80-some restaurants dot the 2 mile stretch from The Alameda (on top at the east) to San Pablo Avenue (on the west).

Cal Performances, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and Freight and Salvage anchor a never-ending stream of the performing arts.

Nice place o visit, nicer place to stay for a long, long time.

Top state university in the country

By EuForia_01 |

Featuring California architecture with stunning views of the San Francisco Bay from many vantage points. Bright minds and young students everywhere you turn?
It's got history from the days of the free speech movement of the 60's, and protests or at least placards are rather common. Still, this place gives off a vibe that is energetic, bright and notworthy!

University of California, Berkeley, Atown Within a Town

By Rita S |

Touring the campus of Cal Berkeley is a great experience even if you are not a prospective college student and even more fun if you are touring with someone who is. It is an expansive campus right in the middle of the city of Berkeley. So much history has taken place there and so many brilliant minds have left their mark. It is an excellent example of how diversity can be harmonious including different architecture, landscaping, and of course the people who live and study on the campus. Definitely worth a visit.

Loved our tour!

By marinaLACA |

We came for a college tour during Spring break and were very pleased with it! One of the students walked us through the grounds sharing fun stories from the school's past and everyday life on campus. The only thing we missed were all the students - would definitely recommend to come while school is in session!

Graduation visit

By Connie L |

We visited the campus to attend our daughter's graduation. It's a beautiful campus with lots of trees and winding streams. Graduation was lovely, and we only walked a few minutes from the building before we found a nice place to take pictures.

If you are in Oakland, take a nice walk through this absolutely lovely campus. Took the BART. So easy. Visit the Sather tower for views of sf and Oakland. Cost 4 dollars, 3 for seniors and kids. Places to stop for lunch or snack. Everyone so friendly!

Beautiful campus

By Sharon L |

UCB is the flagship of the UCs. It is surrounded by the city of Berkeley, but once one enters onto the campus, it is easy to forget that you are within the city. The campus is encased by trees, immense lawns and Strawberry Creek. The ethnically diverse student body is another plus. The Campanile is located centrally and can be visited for a small fee. The campus is a great place in which to walk around and explore.

strolling around in the Campus

By Teresa V |

I was in Berkeley for only few days, but I must say that it is always a pleasure to take a stroll in the University area. The buildings are impressive, there is place for gardens and small forests (even an eucalyptus grove) and at the end of January you already see signs of Spring in the Magnolia, azalea and other bushes. Not to forget the sculptures around. I really like the one by Pomodoro (Sphere within Sphere). I have not been at the Botanical garden this time, but I rememberd from another visit that that was also very nice.
Best of all is to see the very kind students around and the fantastic atmosphere there!

Is There a More Beautiful University?

By 77mic |

As a Berkeley alum, I have fond memories of the beauty of the campus and each time I return I remember why I felt that way. In addition to being one of the premier universities in the country, the campus is hilly and in places, has a woodland setting with views of the San Francisco Bay. You can walk over stone bridges looking down at streams that run throughout, see giant evergreens, and feel inspired by the beauty and history of this great institution. It's also always fun to go to the top of the Campenile for an even better view of the area.

THE california university

Here for meetings and even though it rained cats and dogs it was fun to walk around campus, and then walk around the interesting (a wee bit run down) city of Berkeley. Hope to visit again.

A beautiful way to spend a day - walk through campus

By GoCalbeatSanford |

You do not need to be a student or an alumni to enjoly the beauty of the University of California at Berkeley ! Stroll across campus beside Strawberry Creek on the winding path beneath mighty Redwoods. Stop a the famous Shather Gate and have a student or a fellow visitor take your picture, or stand on the steps of Sproul Hall, turn around and make your speech. Look up and imagine a low flying helicopter trailing clouds of tear gas above you.
Walk down famous Telegraph Avenue and vist Moe's Books, drop in at Amoeba Records and check out the huge selection of quality used CDS.
Hike to the top of campus and have lunch at the Inernational House. Be sure to listen carefully and count the number of different languages you hear. A day cruising campus is a day well spent.

My Alma Mater

By Thomas V |

My graduate degree is from UC and it was a good experience to study here. But I was on campus for only 2 years and I have lived in the area for over 40 more, so I see it as a community space, with theaters, libraries and lots of park space. It's open to the public so come and wander.

The Bancroft Library Is Architecturally Stunning

By Robbie G |

The international world, it seems, converges upon Berkeley. We walked a good part of the campus (which we would describe as chill and friendly) to find ourselves beneath the campanile which is one of the most beautiful bell towers we have seen in the United States. Across the street was The Bancroft Library which oozed a reverence once you opened the front doors. The staff was remarkably helpful and the bright amber reflection off the floors an wall gave one the feeling of being on a warm beach. A beautiful community tucked away in an indefinitely-ending cluster of small neighborhoods.

University of California

By Compatible |

The buildings were absolutely gorgeous. The views were also beautiful, and the library was very abstract. The overall style is classic, sometimes putting in some modern buildings.

Not to Be Missed

By ronaldhecker |

No trip to the Bay Area is complete without a stroll through the University of California campus at Berkeley. This is the mother of all the UC system campus. Starting with Telegraph Avenue and moving through Sather Gate up to the Campanile every building is meaningful in terms of history and architecture. There are lots of places to eat on and near the campus and don't overlook the bookshop with its Cal logo items.

Spralling campus with a wonderful mix of architecture

By Jenny-Jetset |

Beautiful campus with lots of walking trails to wander through the campus and enjoy the trees, streams and buildings with a variety of architecture. The eclectic buildings range from new to old and small to tall. Highlights include the campanile, the men's faculty club, Sather Gate, the Coliseum and Memorial Stadium.

Beautiful Cal campus

By Angela B |

Here is one of the Bay Area's elite university. Students from all over the world come here for the STEM fields or get involved in politics. Because the campus is located in the downtown area, traffic can be a hassle.

Beautiful campus

By Natalie2 |

They were not giving tours the day we visited, but my daughter took me to the highlights. It's a large campus, and most of it is fairly level except for the western end. Classes were not in session so it was quiet. The buildings looked modern. Not sure if that meant they were fairly new, or if that was the style in architecture in California. Up to this point I've only seen college campuses east of the Mississippi. There's a quiet stream that runs through the campus that is very enjoyable to listen to.

Top notch education, at top notch prices

By jmg893 |

I have spent many a day and many a night on the UC Berkeley campus, and thereabouts. Affording, and getting admitted can be challenging to say the least. But the UC Berkeley is a wonderful campus that keeps getting better. The educational options can cover anything a person could want. Social and cultural options are plenty so as to keep one's downtime as occupied as one could want it to be, though you -are- there for an education (or work) first. Lots of variety, plenty of things to see and do from within walking distance to a few minutes drive or BART ride away. Checking out the UC Berkeley campus, it's educational options, it's culture and it's surrounding environment is not wasted time.

Cal Home Coming Week-End September 30 - October 2, 2016

By mini |

We visited the University campus on Cal Homecoming week-end. There are special events for students, parents, and alumni and their families. This included lectures, tours, and open houses. There was also the Cal vs. Utah Home Coming Day.

At the football game, they celebrated Oski Bear 75th birthday celebration. Oski is the Cal Mascot. Cal won over the Utah Utes at the game 28 to 23.

They also invited local high school bands and their teams (flag twirler teams, etc) to the football game as well.

Its always a special event to go to on the University of California campus.

Get up high on the hill at the top of campus to get great views

By Coastman3 |

Wonderful views the further that you get up on the hill. The campus is built on a hill with the football stadium and the greek theatre at the top.

I always love a walk through the campus

By Roland I |

Here in Berkely for a course. Stayed at a place just next to the campus for the 4th time. I have been here mostly during the summer months when the campus is quiet. This is an amazing place to take a walk or run. I imagine it is more difficult to do so when it is full of students. The buildings are amazing and there is a grove of tall red woods at the entrance that are huge.

Impressive campus

By eamorrowesq |

You really have to take a tour to get a full picture of campus. If you walk around the outskirts, you see a lot of homeless people, and that's heartbreaking. Once you walk through the middle of campus, though, it's hard not to be impressed.

Inspiring place to visit

By chsiung2000 |

Exciting place to visit especially during school terms. Vibrant and spirited, but it is always good to walk there since free parking is really a luxury

Fun weekend

We walk around this beautiful campus and enjoyed seeing students studying. We suggest you take a tour. Find the hudden bears and the stream. Shop at the campus stores, or others in the vicinity.

University of California Berkley

By Subramanian P |

I recently visited UC berkeley university campus. This campus is huge in 4 quadrants . The environment is lively and a good place to visit. I was visiting the campus and had difficulty in finding a place to park the car even with paid parking. Most of the roads are one way and most parking spots (paid ones) are occupied. A thing to note , if you are new to the place make sure to find a good parking spot.

Great school!

By callucan |

On a beautiful, eminently walkable campus!! Student housing a major problem, but they are quite able to build more without destroying People's Park! Qualified California residents, of ALL ages, should get priority for admission, at every level, not the wealthy from Asia, Middle East. This IS a CA. taxpayer sponsored university.

Fun to walk the campus

By Andrew M |

The campus is an interesting mix of architecture ... some buildings much more interesting than others. Be prepared for a uphill or down hill ... you choice.

TOP UNIVERSITY, BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS

By AEBBrenham |

We love visiting and walking around campus. Take a picnic lunch or pick-up some food on Telegraph Avenue and "people watch" around Sather Gate. Beautiful architecture, with some Julia Morgan Commissions around. Several Museums are available. See where Ishi , the last of his tribe, lived. Views, views, views. The Arboretum is spectacular, and the Berkeley Rose Garden is close by.

Nice School

By Joeray W |

Has a nice University feel to it! Every kid doesn't need to aspire to go there. It's more of what you can get out of it than where you went to school.

homage

By sunjoe075 |

Many years ago, the chancellor of U C Berkeley came to Princeton to give a talk. His opening remark was "I spoke with my secretary this morning. She said there were only three protests and a handful of rallies - we call it a peaceful day at Berkeley"

Its a beautiful campus with images of the movie "the graduates" all over the place. If you go, make sure you visit the botanical garden at the back of the campus. It is a joint venture with one of the universities in South East China. They list all the herbs and chinese medicines and the labels identified its medical use, the chemical contents etc. I can spend hours wondering the garden and mesmerised by the use of these wonderful plants.

Live and let live kind of place

We went to visit to see if our daughter wanted to attend UCB. The facility is beautiful. We loved walking around. Plenty of sites on the campus to visit. Very friendly people. The quad at noon was filled with students and booths. Very diverse. Very accepting.

one of the greatest universities in the world. Good art & paleontology museum, fun restaurants on campus and nearby.

beautiful location, on campus but also up the high hills behind it , from which there are great views of the entire san francisco bay. Need car to go up the hills, but can take Bart (subway) from SAn Francisco to central Berkeley, and the campus.

Stroll the Campus for an Uplifting Experience

By jgsobol |

Having graduated from UC some 54 years ago I am a bit prejudiced when it comes to reviewing Cal. Academically, Cal is one of the premier colleges on the planet. But it's beautiful setting in the Berkeley Hills is also exceptional. To visit the campus, off street parking is a bit of problem since it is mostly metered parking. Best to park in one of several private and UC parking garages close to, and in some cases, on the campus. Pack a picnic lunch and begin your stroll by entering the campus from either Sather Gate off Bancroft Ave. or from the West end of the campus on Oxford Street. You can also enter on the East end from Galey Rd. Strawberry Creek runs east-west through the entire campus and affords several beautiful places to stop to enjoy your lunch including the Faculty Glade. Visit the campus bookstore in the Student Union to look around. Try and strike up a conversation with a student who can direct you to interesting spots from their perspective. No visit would be complete with ascending Sather Tower (The Campanile) located close the main library. It costs a few dollars but well worth the ride up the elevator to see spectacular views of Bay Area. (note: not wheelchair accessible as there are many steps from top of elevator ride to viewing platform). Check out to see if any concerts are going on during your visit either at Hertz Hall or Zellerbach Auditorium. Both are on the campus. If you don't want to picnic, there are countless eateries around the campus. Most serve basic fare with reasonable prices. Don't expect great, exceptional food at most of the places as they are catering to students who are on the run and have few dollars to spend. If a hot dog will satisfy you, then you must go to Top Dog. There are two locations near the campus. Been around since 1966. I went there when they opened and have been going back periodically ever since. Go BEARS!!

Pretty campus in good location.

By dfbf |

This is a beautiful campus with stunning sunset views of the bay. It has a great area of college shops and eateries on all side, and it's close to the BART line. If you struggle with hills, be prepared for a challenge. The campus is on the upper side and top of a hill.

Cal vs University of Oregon Football

By Ken B |

It's a great old stadium ( California Memorial Stadium with all seats providing a pretty good view. Try sitting on the home side with individual seats as the rest are all aluminum benches. It's a hike up the hill and try to arrange parking ahead of time as it is extremely limited . The Cal fans were very cordial.. Have a great time!

Prospective Student Visit

By TheLeongOhana |

We just barely made the 10am campus tour and got assigned to the very last group leaving the Koret Visit Center. There is a public parking structure next to the California Memorial Stadium. Don’t use Waze to get here since it keeps defaulting the location to the Amazon lockers in Sproul Plaza. That is at least a 10 plus minute walk away.

Our guide, a junior biology major, was a wealth of information not just about the admissions, different schools, clubs, etc but also about some of the history of the school, it’s buildings and contributions (I.e. tater tots and the size of the letters in the eye chart).

The total tour lasted about 1.5 hours. Starting from the Koret Visitor Center end ending up in Sproul Plaza makes sense since the tour winds downhill. You walk through the Haas School of Business, Faculty Club (the only place to stay overnight on campus), Optometry, chemistry, engineering, by the Campanile (Sather Tower), Museum of Paleontology inside the life science building and the Haas Pavilion. There was lots of open space in between campus buildings (was not a planned university as buildings built when needed) and we caught the UCB quidditch team practicing (yes they had simulated broomsticks between their legs) in Memorial Glade. About once a day (check the schedule) the carillon bells are played (there is even a carillon class offered) and I heard it is very nice. You can also climb up the campanile for about $3 for adults and supposedly the views of campus and towards the bay are really nice.

During the weekdays you will see a lot more students and can peek into more of the school buildings and libraries. We wanted to see the library that runs complexly underneath Memorial Glade but ran out of time. If you want more information they also offer separate tours of Engineering and the residence halls or overviews of the admission process.

Once your are finished you can leave Sproul Plaza and head down Telegraph Ave to wander off campus, shop or grab a bite from the many eateries.

Street parking is free on Sundays.

Great Walking Paths!

By misopiso88 |

UC Berkeley Campus is eclectic and interesting. Definitely worth parking and walking around, especially if you have a teen who may be looking at applying. There are beautiful buildings and there are rundown buildings. Great walking paths throughout the campus.

I blame Vicky Galindo for getting me hooked on Cal softball now ever since 2004 I try to attend at least one game every weekend home series and love it so much fun go CAL!

Free Campus Tour

By WheelingTraveler |

We took their 1-hour free campus tour and had a great experience understanding the Berkeley culture. Interesting topics include the 4.0 hill and the free speech movement. Beware of the tour could run longer than the 1-hour allocation and the free 2-hour parking around that area could be an issue taking all the round-trip and wait time into account. Parking in the stadium is pricey but could be the solution.

OLD MEETS NEW

By Bill L |

The traditions of Berkeley and the future all come together on the Berkeley campus,
a great place to spend a day, adding in Telegraph Avenue and a wander around the neighborhoods.

Worth a visit as it has an important place in political and academic history.

By John M |

This academic institution has a long-standing reputation for leftwing politics and free-spirited liberal attitudes among the student body. In fact, it was at the very centre of the 60s flower power, counter-culture bohemian movement. It is now a key stop on the cultural travel scene in the Bay Area and Northern California. The beautiful campus is dominated by the campanile clock tower (Sather Tower), commonly known as the Campanile with clocks on its four faces, which offers an excellent view of the campus, and on a clear day you can see much of the Bay Area. The campus is built on a hill as it is expansive and extends to well over 150 acres. There is a variety of restaurants all around campus, including those on Telegraph, Bancroft, and a great BBQ in Durant. A scheduled tour of Doe library is available and other halls of learning include Dwinelle Hall, Evans, Tolman and Wheeler Hall for Political Science. There are also exhibits in the natural history science building and social gatherings at the MLK Student Union. Unfortunately, the area around the campus has become very dilapidated and run-down, with a lot of drug-related activity in the neighbourhood, but it's still worth a visit as it has an important place in US political and academic history.

Beautiful Campus with multiple reasons to visit

By KLE2013 |

Founded in 1868, Cal Berkeley was the first campus in The California University system. Sprawling across the Berkeley hills, the beautiful oak and eucalyptus covered 178 acre campus has 35,000+ students, over 1600 faculty and 94 Nobel Laureates among its faculty, alumni and researchers. Rated the top public university in American, Cal has a tradition of excellence in academics and a history of political activism.
The campus has a botanical garden, Strawberry Creek running through the campus, the open air Greek Theater, Memorial Stadium and multiple museums.

Nice cooler weather. Wonderful University, lots of trees, lots of squirrels. You feel like you are in a forest.

By Amy Y |

Great University. Coming from southern California, Berkeley was nice and cool. Many restaurants and shops within walking distance.

Awesome Campus to visit in the winter

By Andrew Tsui |

UC Berkeley is truly one of the nicer California universities to visit, especially in the winter with the nice cold breeze. All the buildings were constructed with architectural thought, and there was plenty of greenery to enjoy. The campus was extremely open-aired and felt more like a park at times.

The campus is extremely large and definitely takes a few hours if you want to explore it in more detail. The surrounding area also features many nice stores, including a few ramen restaurants and bookstores. The student shop had nice merchandise, albeit expensive.

Had an opportunity to be at one of the World's leading academic institution for two weeks.

By Satyendra Garg |

The University of California, Berkeley is one of the world's leading academic institutions. When I came to know that I am going there for two weeks I had extremely good feelings. Widely known as "Cal," the university is famous for the size and quality of its libraries and laboratories, the scope of its research and publications, and the distinction of its faculty and students. The University's high-acclaimed faculty currently includes: 7 Nobel Laureates, 225 members of the Academy of Arts & Sciences, 131 members of the National Academy of Science, 87 members of the National Academy of Engineering, a Poet Laureate Emeritus of the United States, and 141 Guggenheim Fellows, more than any other university in USA. It was in this University that two professors discovered plutonium in 1941. A host of other elements, including berkelium and californium were discovered here. Berkeley is known for its extraordinary students. While a large number of its 22,800 undergraduates are Californians, every state of USA
and more than 100 foreign countries send students to its campus.
We had two weeks at Goldman School of Public Policy learning Ethics in Administration, we had enough time going around the campus. A large number of Buildings are Heritage Buildings. It was good to be shown around the campus by a Professor of the University. The facilities here are world class and it was a privilege to be here for sometime.
Loved the experience of being on the campus.

Surprising Campus

By Steven |

We expected a large state school campus with many concrete buildings, Of course, our expectation in this regard was met. However, we dd not expect a Redwood grove, wooded streams, foot bridges or a (used) log cabin. The UC Berkeley campus environment is a mix of large university and small private liberal arts college.

Students at work

By Ulrich K |

We visited the well kept park of the university on a Friday afternoon. It was lovely weather and a lot of students were also strolling through the park. Before leaving the park I saw two students on the lawn under large trees pulling something that looked like a blackboard over the lawn and carrying high-tech photo equipment. Thy were friendly when I asked them what they were doing and gave me a surprising answer: they were exploring the biomechanics of squirrels. I wished them success in their scientific endeavor.

Great university, grounds, and people in Berkeley, CA

By Rhett L |

I'm biased since I went to graduate school here but this is a top rate university in a beautiful setting with views of the Golden Gate bridge, SF, etc. A great place to visit for school, a hike, and great restaurants/bars nearby.

Fantastic urban campus - once inside it is nice for stroll, lot of legacy buildings that have history, the tower views are great.

As a student, I LOVE IT!

By emmaranocha |

I'm from Massachusetts, but I am a student at Berkeley and I am obsessed with it. Beautiful campus, amazing city, great people, and very cultural place. Couldn't ask for a better college town! Totally recommend walking around campus, the buildings are amazing and the weather is always nice. Check out the libraries- they're great! Big campus, you could spent a lot of time here.

Lovely campus, world-class education

I am an alumna, so I'm not impartial, but visiting the campus after graduating over 45 years ago brings back a lot of wonderful memories of my education and friends, despite some of the grubbiness.

Attractive Campus with Hills and Redwoods

By IN_Travelers47906 |

We enjoy visiting college campuses wherever we travel and this is a beautiful campus for walking. It is not every university that has its own grove of redwoods. Be sure to take the elevator to the top of the Sather Tower for its 360 views of the entire campus and beyond. Wander into the huge library. The Student Union seemed uninspired. Business school is beautiful from the outside. Football stadium is beautiful.

Pretty campus

By Terry T |

Pretty campus with lots of mature trees. Nice walkways to guide you through the middle of campus. Unique architecture blends with 150 years of history. Definitely worth a visit. Lots of cool restaurants and shops near by. The campus seemed pretty congested, especially around the football stadium, so driving and parking may be an issue. Plan ahead!

This is one of the best public or private research universities in the world. Come for the beautiful campus and to experience being in the home of the Free Speech Movement! Easy to reach by bus or other means. Surrounded by coffee shops, bookstores, and restaurants. Enjoy!

I received a very good education here.

By Noelle M |

No one believes me, but Berkeley is a lot more conservative than it used to be. If you are going to visit, at least google "Peoples Park" and understand the history. If you arent planning to attend here, then I am not sure why you would come here.

My first trip to UC Berkeley

By Jodi B |

I was on a business trip and had time to spare. Decided to walk the campus. What history. The library was amazing. I also went up the clock monument to see the gorgeous views. Great place to just walk around.

Attractive Campus

By backpacker31 |

After visiting Stanford University, my expectations were set very high. However, while Berkeley isn’t on the same level aesthetically as Stanford, it is quite an attractive school with some interesting buildings. It’s setting nestled within the nearby hills makes for a pleasant atmosphere. Be sure to head up Sather Tower for amazing views of the San Francisco skyline and beyond. The city of Berkeley is a hive of activity with plenty of places to eat and shop. BART has a stop in downtown Berkeley, just steps from the university.

It Helps Make Berkeley the Unique City that it is.

By Intnl |

The main part of the campus is in the heart of Berkeley and the surrounding area is greatly influenced by the school and its students. The Greek Theater is an outdoor venue for all types of entertainment as is Zellerbach Hall as an indoor venue, On and off campus there are buildings in the classic style and others designed by Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck. Directly across from Boalt Law School is a delightful outdoor coffee cafe..The area is full of surprises and one does not know what to expect to encounter at any time such as demonstrations, debates, prosletizing.

An interesting mix of Architecture

By California Girl |

I think one of our favorite things to do once a year is take a walk through the UC Berkeley Campus. There is so much to explore with the newer buildings juxtaposed with the old. The vibe has changed much from the 70's however, it still remains the heartbeat of the city we call home!

Beautiful campus even for a visit

By northernk |

What a nice place to wander... rolling a bit of hillside wonderful buildings to look at and students excited to begin the new school year. If your visiting in the Berkeley area a nice place to hang.

Great campus to walk

By Gayle M |

Stayed nearby and walked through the campus, always full of energy, trees and flowers. On a sunny day near the Student Union saw many students demonstrating their commitment to causes.

Beautiful campus

By Ali G |

We enjoyed a stroll around some of the campus before heading for lunch. The campus is a large and lovely one. Positive, energetic atmosphere. Wish we had more time here.

Can be Enjoyed as a Park

By Thomas V |

I am always reminded of how beautiful the campus is. It is like a big regional park and can be enjoyed that way for long walks and even a picnic. The architecture is a mix. The site is on the hillside and includes a pretty creek bed with some bridges. Lots of people around all of the time. Take a stroll, it is open.

Berkeley

By David T |

This is supposedly a great university. I myself went there many years ago. I did not receive what I would consider a good education. if you know exactly what you want to do you can pick the classes you want to take and Achieve success in your field. I did not have any idea what I wanted to do. In that case Berkeley is too confusing and disorganized. I would never send my children there as it is located in a very unappealing Urban environment filled with homeless squalor and crime. Every day there are assaults and robberies and other crimes committed against students. At one time Berkeley was a paradise commit considered the Athens of the west but now, I would forget about it.

Different from Stanford, still worth visiting

By Acidov |

Although Berkeley is located only about 40 miles from Stanford University, the UC Berkeley campus represent totally different architecture style. It is more East Coast style or similar to European universities. Maybe it is not as unique as Stanford campus but still very beautiful. The architectural style is dignified, the area is clean and quiet (at least on Saturdays) with plenty of glades and parkways on campus. Don't forget to visit library, Sather Tower (scenic views from the top!), and the university store. Polish readers may be interested in the fact that Czeslaw Milosz, Polish poet and Nobel Prize winner in literature, was a professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of California, Berkeley from 1961 to 1998.

Gorgeous campus

By warren D |

Berkeley has one of the most beautiful campuses I have visited. If you want a spectacular experience while there, go up to the observation platform of the Campanile Tower, 3rd tallest bell and clock tower in the world, to view the entire Bay area or enjoy a carillon concert performed 3 times daily.

Downtown Berkley

By 50and5 |

UC Berkeley is the biggest employer in Berkley and a home of Nobel laureates. The campus is situated in Downtown Berkley, or rather Berkley grew around the campus. It is a great place to walk around, ride a bike or read a book under a tree. Zellerbach Hall often hosts cultural events, such as famous musicians, dancers, etc.

Beautiful location to study

By claudiaeva1500 |

One of the most prestigious and also beautiful universities I have seen so far. Lots of famous people graduated from this university.
So many beautiful old buildings with history, nice well kept parks and greens and a very relaxed atmosphere everywhere.
In between small cafes for a snack or soda.
How I would have liked to study here...

Major Public Unitversity

By Thomas V |

One of the most important public universities in the US, and also my alma mater,, is also a good place for a long walk to admire the architecture and landscaping. The hillside can be steep.

Have been going to UCB since I was a child

By catsterk |

Living nearby and attending the finest public university in America has shaped my professional career, and personal life. Always edgy, with an eye toward science and engineering. Marvelous grounds and buildings some dating back to the 1880's. Simply the best public university in America in my opinion.

Really super campus, must see !

By streetMartin |

Very bustling, handsomely laid out campus, interesting architecture: take the tour to the top of the tower, surprisingly awesome views of campus and whole Bay Area !

GORGEOUS gardens and campus

By janebeard |

It was a great visit to the campus, just to wander around the gardens. The iconic tower is beautiful. Carry food because the squirrels will practically eat out of your hands.

Pretty campus for an afternoon walk

By Tom |

Had some time before dinner on a sunny day, so walked up the hill through campus amount the trees and students. Enjoyed the tall, fragrant eucalyptus trees and the historic buildings. Sat in the sun at the base of the tower - nice view down the street and actually the bay to the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge in the far distance.

Walkabout

By John R |

First morning in Oakland and we took a Lyft to Berkeley to tour the art museum. Decided to take a quick walk around the campus. It was cold, so it was a brief walk. Wish I had known there was a botanical garden.

Excellent free guided walking tour

By Philip M |

This is a very impressive campus. We booked a free public guided walking tour, led by a postgraduate student. We booked this in advance on line (find it under campus tours on the Berkeley website) as, quite often, these tours are fully booked.
The tour lasted about 90 minutes and took us on a tour of various buildings and sites on campus. We were taken into several buildings including the main library and the biological sciences building where there is a full skeleton on a tyrannosaurus rex in the atrium. However, most of the walking tour was outside, in the campus grounds.
Our guide appeared very knowledgeable and was able to explain about the history, what goes on in various faculties and about the alumni of the university. As some of our tour party were prospective students, he also explained about entry requirements etc. He also gave some thoughts on his personal experiences at the University. It proved to be a very interesting tour.
Just wandering around the campus on your own is also interesting, there are campus maps at various path intersections so it is easy to know where you are.
We also had a coffee in the students union building.
We were there just before the Spring Semester started - the students were just arriving - so not all the buildings, including the cafes and art galleries, and also the Campanile tower were not open.

Half of the tour & friendly visit

By Agnes |

We planned to drop by and visit one of the research group there, but accidently happen to join a guided tour. The tour was run by a local student and it gave us a nice picture of the campus and students' life at Berkeley. We had to stop our tour while encounting staircase - hard to approach by 2-kids stroller.

Number 1 Public University in the US and beautiul campus

By 4onpark |

Had good fortune to be here for son's graduation and enjoyed every minute of the event, the campus and the weather.

Not to be missed

By ftringali |

Iconic US university that churned out a series of Nobel Prizes not to mention the world's number one operating system: Linux.

We stayed on a public holiday so we could not taste the guided tour organized by local students. Still a nice place to spend a few hours wandering between facilities/classrooms/lawns/etc

I love UC Berkeley

By prasan68 |

This is surely the finest University in the UCAL system and as such my daughter and I would be glad if she were to attend UCB.

It's one of the best university in the US

By Renato L |

A visit to the college town of Berkeley is not complete without a campus tour to the best public university in the world. See all the school buildings, sather tower and their mini forest full of oak and red wood trees.

One of the most beautiful campuses in the world

By suhruthu |

I have visited many campuses across the world. I can say with confidence that UC Berkeley is one of the most beautiful campuses in the world. Even if you are just a visitor to Berkeley, I would strongly encourage you to take a tour of campus. There are free guided walking tours on campus. It is recommended to take one of those tours to get a good overview of UC Berkeley and its campus culture.

Alive with a great history

This is the place in the 60s that shaped the generation with the free speech movement. Where the initial protest to Vietnam war. It's an open beautiful campus .

Great Campus

By Avantika S |

I am a Cal student, so might be biased but the campus is huge and gorgeous! If you are in the neighborhood definitely take a tour. There are so many interesting facts about our campus that still amaze me. My 2 favorite spots would be the Morrison reading room in doe library and memorial glade.

So much to see and do around Berkeley.

excellence

By JDZatSF |

An excellent university with interesting and eclectic architecture, amazing museums and libraries, fascinating history, and a cool vibe. Definitely worth a visit for a few hours or a few years!

Wonderful campus, wonderful people and great food around

By SanatBando |

UC Berkeley is a great university campus. I have visited it many times on account of my ties with the university. The campus is very colorful throughout the year (specially during Spring & Summer with flowers in full bloom). It has a lot of history attached to it and taking a student guided tour is worth it. If you are lucky, you may run into a Nobel laureate or a Field's Scholar.
The whole city of Berkeley is a food lover's paradise. There are many good restaurants and cafes. The "Asian Ghetto", as the student's call it, is a place to sample Asian food and cheap prices.
The only problem is parking. I would advise to take the Bart and enjoy the walk in beautiful weather.

Nice campus

By Nat |

This is a very nice university, clean, big, with a lot of beautiful green areas and kind persons.
However, I must say that it smells terribly bad because of weed. I know that it’s legal there and that people seem to be okay with it (at least from what I saw) but it definitely stinks. I think that, other than that it’s a nice stop, although I don’t think it’s exactly what you’d call a touristic attraction, but well, nevertheless it’s nice.

Also, it’s near a great Half Price Books store, which I recommend to visit as well.

Beautiful Campus

By urbanguy |

We didn't have the time to walk the entire campus, but we did walk a chunk of it. Great landscaping and classic architecture define this campus.

The best public university

By jawa13 |

University of California, Berkeley is undoubtedly one of the best universities in the world. It is no surprise that UC Berkeley certainly attracts the best students but is perhaps not well known is that the students' body is very diverse. The campus is beautiful and historical.

Great university

By Lan Z |

I love this campus. It is great experience to visit this university it is not like other college with very high tuition, hard for ordinary people to go in. This school has great financial aid program for meddle lower income family to afford.

Amazing place and great education

By Nav30 |

The university is good to go around , but has amazing views and a great rating for education. One of the best universities in the world and has amazing choice and quality of professors that are world class

Not impressed

By Amos C |

My adult son and I were in the area going to professional baseball games. When we visit new towns, we enjoy going to local college to tour the campus. My son was a swimmer at a Division 1 college and he has been to many universities.
We were staying about a mile from Cal Berkeley so we spend a morning at the campus. It is a city campus. City streets run around the campus and some streets run through it. The housing around the campus was old and run down. The campus itself was not well groomed. There was an internal area that was the quad area that was pretty nice.
Overall, we were not impressed. I know a degree from here is prestigious but we just did not like the campus.

Greatest university in the world!

By ChrisModesto |

Both of my kids are Cal kids and we have had the greatest time being a part of the Cal Bears community. Go Bears

Beautiful campus

By Malika A |

It’s a short walk from the BART station. And we were there on the weekend so we get to see the flea market right outside the uni which was a plus. They have beautiful buildings, and once you’re inside, make sure to walk all the way to the Tower, because you’ll get to see the prettiest part of the university.

Run Down in Some Spots, Beautiful in Others

By Gmoney221 |

I had high hopes for UC Berkeley as I had heard great things regarding its campus but felt a bit let down compared to some of the other campuses in the Bay Area. I found cheap parking in a garage near the football stadium and began my self-guided tour. The campus is set on the edge of the city and a residential neighborhood, all on the side of a hill. At times, the neighborhood comes up right next to campus and felt a little dirty or worn out.

After looping around the upper area, I made my way towards the center of campus. Buildings here felt fresher and had better upkeep. But with the better upkeep, everything still felt rather tight on the walkways for such a large university. Moving towards the student union, I was late to enter the bookstore but did get to enjoy the square around it. Lots of families and college students but did not several panhandlers and out-of-place individuals for the campus.

Some of the highlights of the campus are the small wooded areas seem to appear out of nowhere, the towering 307 foot tall Sather Tower, and the UC Museum of Paleontology. The people were friendly and mostly kept to themselves and there is some lovely architecture to speak of but I couldn't get past the dirtiness in sots and numerous panhandlers disrupting the experience.

An excellent university campus

By Hanni |

We visited the University of California campus in Berkeley with my daughters. It is a very beautiful campus.

Cherry trees were in full blossom: simply spectacular!
It is a very large campus and wished we could spend more time visiting its museums, garderns and beautifull buildings.

We walked nearly one hour, but could see only a minimal part of it.

Impressive

By FinnB66 |

Spent two weeks at Haase Business School with professor Danner and Coopersmith.

One word describes it all: Fantastic!

Beautiful but dirty

By evienicki |

The campus is beautiful, lots of natural features incorporated into the campus, but there was trash everywhere.

Wonderful place to study, work, and visit

By Teresa R |

Beautiful buildings and surroundings, excellent libraries and cultural events, highly recommend visiting here. I came as a student in 1997 and have never left! Got a job here and have been here ever since. The scenery still takes my breath away.

By Celia R |

I went to pick up my grand daughter for winter break, I can't believe how big this University is... Amazing architecture!

Beautiful

By Lauren H |

My husband and I went for a walk around the campus. It was quiet (summer break I suppose). It is a beautiful place, full of history and scenic views. Very peaceful.

A free, fulfilling activity

By Georgia S |

Walking through the Berkeley campus is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. The architecture, sense of living history and plantings, not to mention the creek, are fabulous attractions. Have a picnic on the grounds in a grassy field, on an historic bench, or aside a majestic fountain.

Worthy for a full day visit

By Franco0311 |

Having graduated from the place, the campus is a a must go for anyone who visits the city. Full of historic buildings, cafes and little restaurants.

Beautiful campus and Buildings

By PaloAltoHills |

Must visit the Campanile tower and enjoy the views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Area. Be sure to take a campus tour and look for Bear art and sculptures.

My alma mater

By Jean G |

It is a beautiful campus with redwoods, a stream or two and eclectic buildings. It is the ancestral home of the Free Speech movement and has academic departments that encourage students to learn how they can help in other countries as well as at home. The trip to the top of the Campanile (clock tower) is wonderful with its view of the bay area. There is so much to recommend the place but just remember, should you visit, that its east/west direction means it can be a tough mile long walk up the hill from West Gate to the stadium. The construction of the stadium is fascinating in itself since it was made to move and adjust, not collapse, should there be an earthquake. On the way, don't miss the life sciences building and its natural history museum.

Beautiful and Alive

By ElvisAndrus |

It is a beautiful campus both of the landscaping and the texture of different buildings built at different times. I was in the area for a month and I knew I was going and tried to find a listing of events such as special lectures or thesis defences and such and could never find that so I felt I did not engage with the campus in way I wanted to.

Apart from the academic challenges and debates, the grounds are enjoyable to wander around. So many nooks and crannies where you can while away the time. Check out the Campanile, worth the $3.00.

Great Public University

By gfsmoot |

UC Berkeley is consistently rated the top public university. Before budget cuts, it was considered one of the top universities in the world consistently beating or tying with Harvard but with more departments and diversity. Still is now an old (>100 years ) campus with many delightful things to see and cultural events etc. Around the campus are many businesses and restaurants catering to students, staff and faculty.
Very worthwhile for historical and cultural reasons and more so if interested in college and university life and learning

Infinite number of things to do

By Judith D |

If you only have time for a walk on the campus grounds, you will have a fine day. Follow Strawberry Creek or follow any of the other walkways around the buildings. Want a good view? Take the elevator to the top level of the Campanile. Interested in the performing arts? Check out the schedule for Cal Performances at Zellerbach Hall. Exhibits? The School of Journalism and the Hearst Museum of Anthropology have interesting displays related to their specialties. Some of the early buildings, such as the Hearst Memorial Mining Building, dating to 1907 and considered one of the state's most important structures, are fascinating to visit. I am lucky to live a mile from the campus and always keep track of the exhibits, lectures, and performances (noting that there are fewer events in summer). Sometimes, I just go there for a nice walk.

UC Berkeley, the flagship UC campus.

By Garry P |

I visit the campus several times a year because, because as one of it's alumni, I serve on boards. The campus has many museums, libraries, and cafes that would be fun for visitors to the East Bay to visit. Additionally, because of the typically mild Berkeley weather, walking around campus to see many of it world famous buildings is a joy. One can see all the NL parking spots that are for the faculty who have won Noble prizes for research done on campus. Getting to the campus is easy because of the proximity of Downtown Berkeley BART station, one block west of campus.

Beautiful campus

By SKC9318 |

The university is beautiful and campus is huge. Surrounding area is nice. Location is convenient with shopping and restaurants.
The kids love it.

Crowded and Uninteresting

By TravelPlenty5 |

The forested glades are gone. The crowds make the experience miserable. There may be a few weeks around Xmas when the crowds thin out. No parking.

Renowned Institution of Higher Learning

By ricsandimas |

I was in the area and had to pay a visit to this renowned institution of higher learning. Granted, I dropped by on spring break, so the campus was empty; but, still, you could breathe this sense of pride as I walked around, and I could only wonder just how many students must parade back and forth when classes are in session. Grounds are as expected: well kept, with plenty of green areas and dotted with Redwoods here and there, as is typical of the area.

Worth visiting

By Sachin K |

UC Berkeley as it is popularly called is worth visiting to view it’s campus. Amongst all the impressive buildings is the third largest clock-and-bell tower in the world. Would certainly very highly recommend visiting the campus.

Nice campus

By Kimberley G |

Check out the bell tower if you have time. It was fascinating to watch the bells chime up close and the views are really nice.

A park-like campus

By Filiz510 |

This campus has been the center of my life for over 50 years, and I still enjoy wandering under its redwood trees, visiting its world-class museums, picnicking on green places, and enjoying the sight of bright young students rushing from class to class or just enjoying being together there. Make time to go up to the top of the Campanile bell tower and see a matchless view across the whole Bay Area. Buildings range from hundred- year-old classics to glass towers built in the 2000s.

Beautiful Campus

By grace t |

Pleasant walk about on the campus where the hint of spring’s arrival is manifested in the blooming trees and flowers all around.
The ladies managing the visitor centre were friendly and helpful and the wall posters and photos with videos were informative.

It’s a college, big but unique

By jcl08 |

A campus and community of its own unique character. Near by running am biking opportunities. Don’t let the “liberal” rep scare you off... a great place for an education.

Lovely campus with wonderful trees!

By paula c |

I had never been to Berkley and was staying in SF. I took uber from downtown (about $20) and walked about 7 miles through downtown and the university. It was really beautiful and great to see the ambience of this college.

Magical Place

By Russ A |

This place is like no other. Don’t bring a watch and don’t be in a hurry. Visit the street vendors along Telegraph Ave. Grab an unbelievable donut from King Pin and enjoy it while people watching in Sproul Plaza. Walk up past the stadium and hike/run the fire trail just past Strawberry Canyon pool. Don’t stop at the connector - go on up and you will get the best views of the Bay. You will end up at the space expiration and research lab - don’t try to get in. Carefully walk down the road to the science museum. - great place for kids of all ages. Then get an uber back down the hill.

Walk through campus and take an elevator ride up the Campanile- time it right and you can hear the carillon playing. Then continue West and explore the Shattuck Avenue area. If you head north a few blocks you will find great restaurants.

Number 1 University in North America is a fun place to visit with many trees , hills , students, exhibits, lectures but many buildings including library’s require student ID cards to enter

One of the World's Greatest Universities

Lovely campus!

By Natalie V |

We were just passing through and took a walk around campus and it really was quite lovely!

The trees and shaded areas are gorgeous and the buildings are huge and impressive, just like an academic facility should be.

There's a lot of history here and if you are at all familiar with it, you will appreciate being here. But even if not, check out some of the interesting sculptures, the dinasaurs and a pretty sweet walk.

I work here!

Great place to work. Been with UC for 25 years, 10 with Berkeley. Most Staff here have been for years and years.

Architectural Paradise

By Robert B |

If you like classic, fin de cicle, or deco architecture the campus has it all. Very hilly, though, be prepared to hike. Make sure to hang around long enough to hear the campaniles.

Beautiful and friendly campus

I love the campus of UC Berkeley. It has so much space and green areas. Students are polite and pleasant, and the campus is just beautiful. Best university in the U.S. MAke sure you visit the Botanical Gardens, Campanille, the Stadium and the Lawrence Lab. Try to squeeze a performance, if available, in Zellerbach Hall or the Greek Theater. The campus is large, so wear comfortable shoes for walking.

Send your kid here for college— They’ll get a good job when they graduate, they will learn to live in the real world of bureaucracy and mandatory diversity, they’ll enjoy stimulating multicultural, international influences, they’ll have access to Nobel laureate‘s in the classroom and international figures in the auditorium, and they will be in a beautiful place with wonderful activities for those non- study times. And all this is offered for a very reasonable price!

Berkeley it's past shapes the future.

By John A |

Walk into Berkeley through Telegraph Ave. and you are surrounded with its achievements. Summer school was in full swing which added laughter and excitement as the kids moved around. Totally unaware of the influence had in the 60's and 70's, some of them may step up and add to the list of Nobel prize winners. Stand outside Sproul Hall (picture it as a sea of bodies), go up Sather Tower and when you go into any of the libraries, don't forget to look up.

Visit to University of California Berkeley

By Amrita P |

3.6.18_ we visited Sather clock tower popularly known as campanile , most enduring landmark, at Berkeley University, Sather tower has a height of about 328 Feet, was completed in 1915, was gifted by Jane K Sather. After taking entry ticket of 2 $ each,We went at the top by lift and could see the skyline of sanfrancisco, the Berkely town, the vast expanse of sea, Oakland town, the signature bridges of sanfrancisco- golden gate bridge and bay bridge, the whole bay area view surrounded the Sather clock tower. There is a speciality at the top, the students of 1928 batch have donated 61 Ringing bells weighing from 19 to 10500 pounds, known as carillon bells, which create beautiful sounds and everyday they ring it in the morning and afternoon and the sound is heard by students at all departments of Berkely University. The concerts of carrilon also take place. The bells are connected to piano like instrument which is called carillon. The bells are of different sizes, some huge, some small and are connected in such a manner that through carrilon symphony can be created, amazing it is. Another surprising thing was when this tower was constructed, fossils of extinct species dire wolf and saver toothed cat were found at that place.

University library is a huge pillared structure which is nice to see from outside but was closed, so could not see from inside. Metallurgy and mining department building is very attractive. During our stroll around the campanile, Saw many departments, some have ancient look depicting the long history of UCB, while other departments are modern constructions. Saw student activity centre and show room of exhibits of UCB for purchase, outside UCB campus there is Berkeley downtown, I saw many Cuban, japanese, Italian, indian, Pakistani eating outlets, bakery, icecream parlour, icecream cookie sandwiches, boba tea shops, big music cd, LP record showrooms, cloth shops, indian clothing showrooms, overall it is a happening place but with many homeless people on the roads

Disgusting

By MikeC |

Trash everywhere, stores along streets mobbed with kids many closed and fronted by chainlink fence. Homeless blight blocks on all four sides not far away. Not hard to imagine burning fires and shrieking mobs just under the surface.

My family attended the walking tour organized by Cal. Our guide gave us lots of interesting information about the university, campus and student life. We enjoyed it.

Wonderful city and School

I will suggest anyone visit the area. Plenty of restaurants and other activities within walking distance.

A great university - and so much more!

By Coconut_Grove_Dave |

I visited the campus one morning during a business trip to Oakland, walking from my hotel on University Ave. I entered the campus from Oxford Street and walked through the Eucalytpus Grove, just as I had done for 4 years while a Cal undergraduate over 30 years ago. This was my first visit since graduating and I was thrilled to see that the campus has retained all of its beauty and charm. The campus retains the old and the new - architectural styles span the history of the site. I was delighted that the University was in session so there were students everywhere. I walked to one of the large lecture halls (at Latimer Hall) and walked inside while the professor and 200+ students were getting ready for a lecture on general chemistry. At Sproul Plaza, where the campus meets Telegraph Avenue (a must see for visitors!), I witnessed young people entertaining an appreciative crowd under Sather Gate and a group of students protesting outside the ASUC book store. The campus has not changed - always a magnet for change, free speech and expression, and student activism. I left the campus and walked down Telegraph Avenue which has much changed from the incensed-filled stores of the 1970s that I knew. For visitors to the campus, there are numerous opportunities to walk and explore - Strawberry Creek, the Campanile (Sather Tower), academic buildings (many with departmental museums), a botanical garden, and Sproul Plaza, to name a few. You do not have to be a student or an academic to appreciate this wonderful setting overlooking San Francisco Bay.

Excellent stroll despite the smoke

Such a beautiful campus nestled on the hillside. Worth the effort to stroll through the campus beyond the main Sproul Plaza.

Campus is perfect for hiking

By Traveller_123 |

The campus premises are perfect for hiking and enjoying a walk up on the Berkeley hills. There is a lot of nice hikes once you go up the hills. Some hikes are harder but the campus and the bell tower is wonderful place to stroll and enjoy the day. Rest rooms are hard to find since all buildings are can be opened through badges only. The bio science building has a huge skeleton for a Dinosor and it’s worth seeing once.

summer time evening

By orang |

i have been there for a summer time evening music show, weather was perfect for a july evening, architecture was nice and people were nice and friendly.

Wonderful view

By Barnetjb123 |

Even with only a time to drive through and walk around a bit, touring this famous campus is a treat. Check out the parking spaces reserved just for their nobel prize winners. We took the hills to spots with great views and enjoyed the wonderful sunny climate.

Beautiful Campus!

By rduinc |

Really enjoyed wandering the campus where so much history and activism has taken place. Campus is large, there is plenty of green space and the buildings are spread out, so it takes awhile to get around. The student center has an information booth and we got information about where the art museum was and the museum. Both museums are small and it does not take much time to walk thru.

Historic Berkeley

By berkeleyres88 |

Must see for Berkeley trip. Sproul Plaza, clock tower, Sather Gate and the historic architecture mixed with the newer construction. Always some kind of activity. Don't miss Zellerbach, Haas School of Business, Berkeley Law, International House and the new Memorial Stadium.

Impressive intellectually and aestjetically

One of the great universities of the world, Berkeley is also one of the most beautiful. The state of California underestimates what a treasure it and the whole UC system are and underfunds them. This is slowly taking a toll. But Berkeley is still a special place.

Always Love to Go Back to UC Berkeley, November 2019

By mini |

My husband and I are both Graduates of UC Berkeley. We are also Cal Bear Football ticket holders.

As such, we returned to enjoy walking through the campus in the fall.

Its one of the leading universities in America.

Great place to visit.

So much happening on campus, as well as a great place for views of SF, San Pablo Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Amazing school in beautiful setting

By Been2Bagan |

Some parts of Berkeley are run down, but the campus is still beautiful. Graceful buildings, flowing landscaping, interesting campus characters, and the hilly backdrop make this a worthwhile visit. The tower was closed when we visited, but I'm sure the views are spectacular. The campus stores are fun, and we found some edgy T shirts which the teens in our group loved. Cute cafes and bars all around the edges of campus. A stroll through campus is interesting and enjoyable.

You don’t need to be a student to visit campus!

“Cal” is a beautiful campus! See the turn of the century buildings, walk along Strawberry creek in the Eucalyptus grove, go up Sather tower and look at the surrounding campus. The adjacent neighborhoods have great places to eat and so many places to visit.

Best years of my young life

By fishlovergirl |

I went to grad school in Clinical Psychology here. Great education from some brilliant and well-rounded faculty. I graduated in 1981, so the faculty has probably changed, but I owe them everything for the great career I've had.

World class University Beautiful Campus

By Kenneth E |

Anything and everything is available at UC Berkeley, to see, to read about and to appreciate. World class teachers and students come to one place to learn, to share and teach. Together with a wonderfully historic campus layout with awesome views, UC Berkeley is one of the best places to go to, to learn about and apply for.

My Alma Mater

Well I got a graduate degree here many years ago. In this era of confinement, it's a great place to stroll around and enjoy the architecture and gardens. The campus has great landscaping, but it's become a bit more crowded with buildings.

Love it

By Camilo B |

It’s beautiful and you can feel the student atmosphere.
You must go to the top of the tower and admire San Francisco Bay and university campus

Beautiful campus to walk around. First time there. I went to UCLA, so always wanted to see Berkeley. The surrounding community is much better at Berkeley. Westwood next to UCLA has never regained its footing since the 1990's.

Lovely campus tour!

By Zonadl |

We had a wonderful and informative tour of the campus. Make sure to go to the top of the clock tower, we didn't' get the chance because it was closed and have heard the view is lovely.

Very Pretty

The University gets more beautiful every time I visit.

By Marilyn D |

Although it isn't the "Berkeley" we once knew, it is a lovely campus and always a joy to visit. I especially like the University Art Museum.

Nice large sparkling campus

By Traveller_123 |

Easy option to park car and then hike in the campus up to the hills. We prefer to go when university is closed. It’s less crowded and easy to find a parking spots. Lots of eating options around the campus.

This university has a great collection of buildings for the tourist to see!

By sightseeing_US |

There are all sorts of interesting facets within the campus of the University of California, Berkeley. Once can approach the large campus from any direction. The southern and western portions are more flat whilst the northern and eastern portions have sloped hills. Approaching the campus from the south on Telegraph Avenue is pedestrian oriented. There are a series of shops and student geared eateries. Approaching the campus from the west on University Avenue, has the Bart (subway or metro) stations, and is automobile oriented. The northwest area has some more upscale eating. North and East of the campus are residential areas.

The campus itself has various departments. The style of buildings varies from mid 20th century industrial, to more modern, to even rural cottages with creeks and surrounded by rolling lawns. Many buildings are open to the general public for quiet observation during opening hours.

This place is famous for its consistent place as the most highly regarded public university in the US. Many departments are often ranked by highly regarded publications as among the best or as the best among all universities in the world. Admissions are quite competitive if you ask around.
