Great Experience

Having a Friend that lives in DC was great. This was a plus. But most of these memorials can be self guided little walk thrus so you can take as much time as you would like at all of them.

Gun fodder

By pneumotox |

An immense intensity passing through this memorial. So many people died for this Vietnam War. It’s a real slap in the face to see all these names of US Soldiers gone and never returned

weekend getaway

By 831patriciar |

easy to find. they have a books outside near the wall to help you find the people on the wall. lots of mementos by the wall. must see

Beautiful

By EmptyNest |

The most humbling of all the monuments. To see the names of all the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice is undescribable. A must see if your in DC.

Appropriately depressing. Buried in a dark hole. Good place to cry.

By Bleeto |

Was in DC for some exciting and uplifting events. Had one cold and rainy day to visit the National Mall and unintentionally came upon the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Over 53,000 American boys on that wall. One of them is Steve Vestal. Found his name with the help of one of the many guides. We used to play pickup basketball in his driveway when I was in Middle School in 1960s. It was sad, but comforting to see so many people visiting this unglamorous memorial on a winter's day to remember the young men and boys (mostly) who were so badly used by our politicians and stupidly wasted by their incompetent political generals. The real cost of bad tactics and policy.

Paying Respect

By Brian B |

Every time I come to DC I visit the Vietnam memorial. I come to visit friends who gave everything for this country. Its very hard for me to see their names on the wall and pictures I keep of them. But the respect for them and the others compels me to return each time and salute one more time. Semper Fi.

A sad reminder of a conflict

By Anthony C |

We went to see this attraction to see some of the names of the people that died during this conflict, they included servicemen, nurses and civilians. To see all the names was very humbeling, We were there at the right time as there was a guided tour about to start so we went on it and to say it was an eye opener would be an under statement, the man that did the tour did a tour during the war so it was a bit emotional for him as he knew some to the names. He gave a very interesting talk and is worth waiting by the wall to hear the how it was designed built and is linked to the surrounding statues to honour over the 58 & a half thousand that were killed

Beautifully Designed Memorial

By Nelson T |

This is a very fitting memorial to those who served and died in the Vietnam War. It is a very emotional experience to see all the names of those Americans lost against the black stone background. Directories are provided that allow you to find the names of any persons you might know.

A beautiful tribute

By Rosebud39631 |

A beautiful tribute to our Veterans from the Vietnam war. The wall runs along the park area and will make you really think about the loss that families feel . A must see

Imposing monument

By 157henk157 |

Not sure how to describe it, but what makes this memorial come to live is actually when you talk with one of the war veterans that are often around. That is when this wall really starts to come alive.

Great design

By Deanne D |

This is an important memorial for those involved in the Vietnam/American war. The design of the black granite memorial is very interesting. They have a couple of books there that you can look up to find family members involved in the war. There was also a veteran present who you could talk to if you wished.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

By Sheryl H |

A must for anyone visiting Washington DC. My husband is a veteran and we go every time we’re in DC. Very moving tribute to those who gave their lives. There are volunteers that will be happy to assist you with finding a name. Very peaceful.

A poignant gorgeous reminder of the war

By allezgently |

I first saw this memorial a few years after it was installed. Then, and now, it is a heart-warming reminder of all those who lost their lives in this awful war. It demands thoughtful, painful reflection. A short way across the lawn and down the path is the memorial to the Nurses in the war. This is THE most extraordinary sculpture I have ever seen! It's in the details that the sculptor captured and conveyed the raw emotion of these 3 women. The outstretched hand of the nurse looking for a helicopter and the resignation of the nurse kneeling behind her. Be sure to take the time to find it, only 100 yds from the wall.

Remembrance of friends who gave all.

By Carolyn L |

Very solemn place. Lots of family members finding and reflecting on friends and family lost to war. Sad to think they were lost defending someone else's land.

Unaffected design but really memorable

By Joelle D |

You feel the cost of this war for America by walking along the black walls of this memorial, designed like a scar in the soil.
Do not hesitate to ask for information from Vietnam's war veterans who are present all day long: they will be glad to share their history.

Place of reverence

By ESKK4 |

This memorial is very well done. It is indeed a place of reverence. The books for name reference at the beginning and end are an added bonus. We were able to show our kids a name in the book and see where on the wall it was matched. Very peaceful and a place to give thanks.

Don't Miss the Vietnam Memorial

By KatWat39 |

The Vietnam Memorial is very well done.....a wall that goes on and on with names of the people who gave their lives. There are books at the start where you can look up name(s) of soldiers killed in the war so you can find the name on the wall. Definitely a place that makes you stop and think.

Impressive stop when walking Mall

By Dear Virginia |

Knowledgeable & kind park guides on hand during daytime to answer questions. This memorial is simplistic yet impactful.

Don't Miss It

By Amanda&Chris |

Having bought a painting of the memorial when I was in New York in the 90's, I knew this would be a 'go to' if I ever got to DC. And it didn't disappoint. Beautifully done, thought provoking, poignant, a wonderful way to remember those who gave so much. Would recommend visiting during the day and night if you have the time

Beautiful & Informative

By ggtravels2018 |

Beautiful & informative monuments. Relaxing walking tour. Close proximity to the reflecting call and lots of other historical monuments. Easy to visit multiple in one day while enjoying the weather, getting in your steps, and learning a lot about various cultures and histories all with in a short radius of each other.

WoW

By F1LoverAnn |

A very sombre memorial. The place really brings home the sacrifice that the USA made in fighting this war. Very clean. Visiting in December meant that we had the place to ourselves. Felt very safe. Is very well maintained.

Emotional

By Pixelpanderer |

This place just gives me the chills and makes me angry about the stupidity of our government. Every time I go there I see someone honoring the dead of a fallen buddy.

One of my favorite places in the city

By smiller324 |

While this memorial is a solemn and sacred tribute to those who lost their lives, it is also a beautiful spot of remembrance. Highly recommend.

Powerful tribute to a controversial war

By John B |

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a powerful tribute to the men in the armed services who lost their lives in a controversial war. It is a simple monument, but it is emotional to see. No one in my family served during Vietnam, but I am touched every time I see it. The most powerful visit I had was in 2007. My class drove down to DC to read some of the names of those men on the wall. I read a name of a man whose son was there. It was moment I will never forget. Regardless of your feelings towards the war, visiting this monument is a moving tribute.

Emotional

By DesertRose |

This was so respectful and well done and thankfully even though there were throngs of other tourists all were also being respectful.
This was probably the most emotional of the memorials for me as I saw a older man reading the names and crying.

Moving Tribute to Those Lost

By Bill K |

This is one of the few memorials in D.C. that is better viewed during the day. This memorial has been openly criticized for its design ("Not grand enough" "Like a giant tombstone", etc.). With that said, I challenge you to visit and not be moved by the massive number of names on this wall. Visitors leave an assortment of individual tributes to their family and friends lost in this war...which adds to the feeling of loss.

Be sure to checkout the statues on the adjoining walk honoring the men and women lost in Vietnam. The male statues are purposely looking toward the memorial and their fallen brother/sisters.

Very Moving Experience at this Memorial Remembering Lives Lost

By TravelingSoccerLoon |

Visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a very moving experience. I find it best at night when crowds have quieted down and the scene is more peaceful. Completed in 1983, the simple yet powerful monument contains the names of over 58.000 dead and missing American soldiers from the conflict. For me it is a reminder of the wastefulness of war. Experiencing the Memorial is a must if visiting Washington DC for the first time and is easy to combine with a visit to the nearby Lincoln Memorial.

Words Don't Do It Justice

By Evil_E207 |

There are no words that can describe this place - a fitting tribute to those that have died in service of this great country. Even if you don't know anyone on it the memorial is more than moving.

Take the time to find a name.

By Scott J |

I looked for the name of a brother of a school mate. It brought the names to life, and brought back the feelings of sadness I felt for my friend so long ago.

I have seen the traveling wall.....

By Michelle B |

My uncle died in Viet Nam and I was able to see the traveling wall and find his name on it, but it was even more special to see the Viet Nam wall in DC and find his name on it. Its very beautiful and I am glad that I have now had the chance to see it in person, it was a bucket list item I was able to check off.

Tearful for my MArine husband

By GSOhio |

It is a great place to reflect on the sacrifices necessary to keep us free. It was really easy using the books to find the names we were looking for.

Very somber experience

By Passport53 |

The Memorial is extremely well done. I would suggest going on a tour so you can get the history behind it.

Moving Memorial!

By TravelerTrecker |

The Vietnam War Memorial is very easy to find. It is very close to the Lincoln Memorial and at the opposite site of the Korean war Memorial. I just arrived here by walking after visiting the World War I and II Memorials, the Washington memorial, the Korean war Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. All of them together teach you how the US has made an impact in the World History! The Vietnam War memorial honors all people who died in Vietnam in a very respectful and discrete manner. You can see your reflection in the black granite wall.

It is very informative! You don't need to take a tour to visit the Memorial Mall. Just live it on your own!

Like every memorial in the Memorial Mall, the visit is educational, generous, moving, respectful, balanced, and free!

Beautiful in the month October! The weather was perfect!

Visit with my friend

By William S |

Always stop to remember a friend who died in the war and has his name inscribed here. Solemn place. Everyone should visit.

Sobering but beautiful memorial to deserving veterans

By Lynn S |

This memorial will tug at your heart strings even if you don't know anyone who died in Vietnam. The size of the memorial and number of names on the wall is just mind boggling. I was emphasizing to my teen sons that each name represented a person who had given their life for our country. I am glad this country finally gave these brave young men and women the memorial they deserved. And while I shed tears seeing all the names on the wall, I am so glad I had the opportunity to visit and pay my respects.

Beautifully simplistic

By AdventureMN95 |

The memorial was so beautifully simplistic that you could really tell and feel the effort that they put into this. My friend was also about to find her family in the list of names so that was very moving for her to see and be a part of.

Beautiful emotional memorial

By Phil G |

Must see if you are on the mall. Very moving and emotional. Remember to please be respectful. You may see old men crying and touching the names of family members or friends on the wall. There will be pictures, flowers, flags and letters along the wall. The Vietnam Memorial is located next to the Lincoln Memorial towards Constitution Avenue. It is outside and open 24 hours a day. I recommend going early in the morning. The wall was dedicated on Veterans Day in 1982 and is inscribed with 58,281 names of soldiers who died in the war. Then names are listed chronologically from 1959 to 1975. There is a book with a directory of names to help people find where the name is located on the wall. This can also be found online. You should walk along the wall. It is definitely a moving experience.

Very moving and awe inspiring

By mjanedis |

You need to read these names and see for yourself how many people gave their lives to fight communism. Another powerful exhibit

Moving

By metrazol |

An architectural and sculptural masterpiece, that is as relevant today as when it was built. Startling how powerful such a simple work can be.

all alone

By paula c |

was there at 7 AM - quiet and serene. This monument is so important, and well done. Take the time to visit early or late in day when not crowded or hot.

Awesome memorial

By I W |

Designed as a slash / gash that heals from the middle, so the names are in order from the centre to the right, and then from the left to the centre, so the first people killed in action or next to the last. We went to see the memorial twice, during the day and at night. Seemed

A very nice memorial despite the sadness

By Wayne |

The memorial is a well thought out tribute. Sad to see over 58,000 names had to go on this. Plenty of walking space here. Nice to see people have put flowers and photos here upon their visits

Heartfelt & Inspiring

By Beth F |

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is very touching and surreal. It is worth seeing at night. I recommend this memorial for anyone who is a lover of history.

Let you deeply think about the war

By Eva T |

We read that Vietnam Veterans Memorial is one of the most visited and moving monuments in the United States. And visiting it I can say that also one of the most emotional. From the distance you hardly see it as it's like buried under grass - very symbolic to how the soldiers fought there.
It was designed by Maya Lin, a 21-year-old architecture student at Yale, it was controversial at the beginning, but became iconic.
It is composed of two adjoining 75 meters long walls of which each is composed of 72 black granite panels. Seventy of the panels on each wall are inscribed with the names of the men and women being honoured. The walls ascend from 20 cm tall to over 3 meters where they meet.
The Memorial chronologically lists the names of 58,318 Americans who died in service and those missing in action (MIA). Apparently there are about 30 names incorrectly included. Symbol at each name tells you if the person was confirmed dead or is missing. Reading the messages and letters brought tiers in my eyes.
At both ends of the Memorial you can flip through the directories of the names and their locations.
The statue of three servicemen was added in 1984 to complement the Wall.

Very moving.

By Robben T |

I have seen the traveling wall but the real deal is a must. The story of the arrangement of the names is very interesting.

Amazing memorial

By Pia S |

My first time in Washington D.C we went to see Lincoln memorial and then walked over to see the Vietnam Veteran Memorial and it was really beautiful, It was very somber and gave you the feeling of how much was lost during the war. Its chilling to see just how many names there are on these walls. Its a great place to go and remember history, to honor these soldiers who weren't honored at the time of the war.

Very very major and honored Memorial

By I visited this place🇮🇹🇺🇸🇬🇧🇳🇱🇫🇷 |

PROS
• Important and critical national monument
• Stark and meaningful
• A place of solitude and reflecting
• A place for honor and respect- for those who sacrificed and departed and for those family members who remember them
• Stunning meaningful architecture
• Next to Lincoln Memorial

CONS
• Crowded
• Terrible lighting at night- be careful

“I VISITED THIS PLACE”…
… because as an American who lived through that era, I wanted to honor the heroes and memory of those who sacrificed- and that’s what I tried to do there.

I went at night with the boys, when it was so dark after 2100h and downright dangerous and treacherous.

Then I returned on Sunday morning with Mrs Place, and we participated in laying flowers at specific names we were given of two of the 58,000 who died there.

This monument memorial is a remembrance of a major part of American history, and so tourists and visitors should include this on their agenda- citizens as well as foreign visitors.

Remember to see the adjacent Three Soldiers Statue.

I am placing here dozens of my photos from the night and the day visits- please let me know if you find this “helpful.”

Moving

By Gayle E |

This black monument is impressive. It is built below ground and is a reminder of the horrors of war. You can look up your person and find where their name is written and the stones are numbered in the corners. Sacred ground.

a memorable place to visit to pay homage to Vietnam veterans

By mehnaaz |

This granite reflected Memorial flares up the touching memories of the Vietnam war veterans of the country.

LUGUBRIOUS

By Juan Carlos G |

This monument is really a wall that symbolizes good and evil and lists those who fell in the Vietnam War during the years it lasted and which is still remembered over the years.

Very touching and sad

By paddyr919 |

When visiting the mall and seeing many vets and families visit the wall, it will never leave me and all the personal ute s left by specific points

The amazing solider sculptures are also breath taking in the stories they reflect

Humbling

By alltravellvr |

Quite humbling to see this memorial for the many 58,300 US armed forces who were lost or MIA during this conflict.

A constant reminder!

By phinal99 |

This wonderful memorial serves as a constant reminder that we must always thank our service members who go off to fight in unpopular conflicts. They do not make policy they carry out the business end of it, thank you Vietnam Vets!!! See this memorial and remember them, honor them!!!

A time of reflection

By Heather H |

Vietnam Memorial is an emotional site of how many soldiers that did not make it back. There were several vets there looking up their fallen soldiers.

Smaller than expected

By jane a |

It is smaller than you expect, designed to blend in but as it is in between the world war 2 memorial and the Lincoln memorial you will see it

Must See

By heddy g |

This was a must visit on our trip. So very emotional to see all the names and all the gifts being left by surviving family members. Very somber but also necessary to never forget.

Wow

By Corrie |

Respectfully we visited here!!! We were saddened and proud, in equal measures to see the monument!!!

Worth a Visit

By Dean_Amy-2004 |

One of many monuments on the National Mall area that’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Seeing all the names on the panels is sobering; don’t miss the 3 soldiers and women’s memorials at either end of the wall.

Very moving memorial

By sadieh923 |

I had a hometown man that was killed in Vietnam. The book by the entrance to the memorial made it easy to find his name. Very moving to see not only his name but so many others who lost their lives. Lovely tribute to fallen heroes.

Vietnam Veteran Memorial visit

By quadmw |

Our visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was awe inspiring. Such a wonderful tribute to those men and women who paid the ultimate price in service to our nation.

58,000 names

By Reslimpan |

The Vietnam memorial is a few steps away from the Lincoln memorial and worth a visit. The 58,000 names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall is a reminder of cruelty of war. In addition to the walk there is the three soldiers statue and the Vietnam Women’s Memorial. The wall is the part that gives you a long lasting impression in it’s simplicity it is sending a strong message.

One of the best war memorials I've seen

By Betty |

This memorial is a special place with a special message. It is unique. Beautiful in the simple way it conveys complexity. The individual sacrifice of every soldier, the total number of lives destroyed, the endless wave of destuction that is war. Not to be missed - and while you're there walk over to the Korean memorial - equally as moving, yet very different. We went to both at night and again in the daytime.

Vietnam Memorial

By @atracks |

This one was really disappointing. Not because it was lame but because it didn’t get the same treatment as the others. That was unfortunate even if it was an unpopular war.

Very nice and emotional

By nanaLowe |

My hubby is Vietnam vet. Those that are old Erich know this was a very unpopular war, but he did as his country asked..they have books with the names of the veterans so you can find the name of a loved one.

Survivor syndrome

By Michael E |

What a powerful reminder! I have friends on the wall. I went to Korea instead of Nam in 1971. So much pathos at the wall. For those of us who were military it is a tribute for all of us. We remember those who gave all.

Peaceful walk

By sharon s |

Be respectful as many go here to heal. There are other monuments where you can be loud and have a good time but this is not the place. One needs to be very aware how many served and died in this war.

Humbling Experience

By Robert L |

The combination of the setting on the National Mall, the massive volume of names engraved in the memorial, the frequent leave behinds (flowers, notes, mementos) along with the people make this a worthwhile experience for even those without a direct link to the Vietnam War.

A Somber but Inspiring Memorial

By Patricia B |

One cannot miss visiting this architectural wonder when visiting the National Mall. It is such a wonderful tribute to the men and women who fought and died during this terribly unnecessary conflict. Thankfully I did not know anyone personally who lost their life in this war.

for my family

By Mynewhomefor |

n my family we have Vietnam veterans, so I wanted to visit this place, very interesting and a lot of emotions

Heart-wrenching...

By Cindy R |

The magnitude of the Vietnam War Memorial hits you hard when you see all of the names up close, of those who died during the war.

No matter what side of the political party resonates with you most, the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for America, must be respected.

May they Rest in Peace.

And may their families find some solace in that their loss, was not in vain.

The most known

By sgavoyages |

Most famous memorial. Not easy to find. Quite cold monument dating from 1982. It is the attitude of the Americans which makes the monument moving.

Moving....

By Kevin Bond |

Respect the wall and the men and women that lost their lives fighting for our freedom. To deface a memorial like this is unfathomable.

A must see

By misoangry |

Very sad walking through all the names of our service men and women. People searching for the names of loved ones, touching their names.

Inponent

By michTI |

Very impressive as a building and as a park.
We know the story.
In my opinion it is a place to visit in Washington, in fact, not to be missed.

just wow, all the names.

By Eric L |

reading the names on the wall of fallen family, friends of family and all the other names just shook me to the core. This is a must do.

Very moving

By Stella-Dot |

Just by reading some of the names in this veterans national memorial makes you realise the devastation that it caused. The area is far larger than you realise and the quiet ambience never waned. It honours the U.S. service members who gave their lives in the Vietnam conflict. It makes you think and has an impact.

A very nice tribute to brave soldiers who were lost in the Vietnam War

By Ward D |

The memorial is located on the National Mall, to the east of the Lincoln Memorial on the north side of the reflecting pool. It can be hard to find a parking space depending on the day and time that you visit and it is better appreciated in the daytime as lighting is limited at night. It consists of three main components: the Wall, the Three Soldiers statue, and the Vietnam Women's Memorial. The Wall is the centerpiece of the memorial and the most recognized feature. It is made of black granite and is composed of two distinct sections that meet at a 125-degree angle, forming a V shape. The Wall is inscribed with the names of over 58,000 servicemen and women who either died in the war or are listed as missing in action. The names are arranged chronologically according to the date of casualty, with no distinction made between rank or branch of service. The reflective surface of the polished black granite allows visitors to see their own reflections as they approach, creating a powerful and personal experience. I remember when they dedicated in 1982. Many did not appreciate its beauty but I think it is a very fitting tribute to the fallen and allows people to touch the names of their fallen friends. I definitely recommend visiting this and the associated memorials if you are in the area.

Somber and impactful

By Jason S |

This is my second time visiting the monument. I didn't fully understand the significance this location had the first time. My stepfather was in Vietnam, and to think that his name could easily have been on that monument did choke me up a bit. It hit harder than I thought it would. I think the simple elegance of this monument makes it even more impactful. I noticed a lot of people making rubs of names on the wall, meaning the impacts of this war are still being felt generations later.

Overall, this is such a somber location and the vets from this war are still feeling the effects of the battle.

Somber

By MstqMI |

It's a somber walk along the Vietnam Wall, seeing the names of so many men and women that gave their lives in this war. My husband & I had been here before when he found the name of someone he served with in the Marine Corps. Also, we found the name of a classmate of ours that died then, too. The three servicemen statue is also very moving.

Thought Provoking Monument

By Christopher G |

it has to be visited, along with the surrounding area of the Mall with all it's iconic museums and buildings

Simple Yet Powerful

By erbyjones |

The Vietnam memorial is about 200 yards of black marble with the names of those who gave their lives in battle. The wall is divided in panels by year, from 1959 to 1975. At the entrance notebooks are available with the names of soldiers in in alphabetical order. There was a volunteer veteran answering questions, in addition to a park ranger. A beautiful way to memorialize the fine men we lost.

Moving

By Tracey B |

Easy to add into your walk around the National Mall. Please be respectful and keep your kids/tour groups in line while walking this space.

A solemn reminder

By ELIZABETH R |

We saw this as part of a tour; despite only having a short time there, it made a huge impact. The Wall goes on and on...and endless list of names and sober reminder. It is beautifully done and absolutely worth visiting on a trip to DC.

I was expecting more

By N D |

I appreciate this is designed to be a somber and reflective space but, having visited the sites dedicated to the fallen in Vietnam, I was expecting more.

Genius Loci

By Jack B |

What an experience. Before you go learn about the architecture so you can appreciate the experience further. And please, remove you hats before walking down that ramp.

Impactful

By aboydar |

There is little more to be said other than this is a truly impactful memorial. Abstract and respectful to those who lost their lives in Vietnam.

I am a Vietnam Veteran and this memorial is the most significant part of my visit to Washington.

By lrhamilton1968 |

The simple power of the The Wall never fails to bring me to tears. I see my friends names, over one half of my Infantry Officer Basic Course class are there - wonderful, happy, talented young men who died in their early twenties - a huge loss to our country, "When will we ever learn?"

Emotional, but still a must-see

By Sphynxlovers |

My Dad served in the Vietnam War and he had given me a few names to look for on the wall for him. I didn't think I would get emotional but when the reality hit me of why all the names were on that wall, my tears flowed. I am so glad my Dad made it back.
There are people there to help you locate names and I was able to find the names my Dad asked me to find. It's an emotional experience but one you can't miss if you go to D.C.

Very emotional

By Jon P |

This is certainly a must see when visiting DC. It's an easy walk from the Washington Monument and right across the street from The Lincoln Memorial.

A haunting memorial

By MAConvert |

This memorial is a haunting reminder of the losses sustained by this country during the Vietnam War. I'm glad I have no one to seek on the wall, and seeing others who weren't so lucky look for their loved ones was heartbreaking.

Moving memorial

By 974paulette |

Not my first visit, but emotional none the less. A volunteer docent at the site answered our questions and pointed out features we might have missed. The Nurses Memorial is very moving in its simplicity.

A must see

By Ceetje01 |

Very impressive. So many names, so many lives lost. It is also very nice that all the war monuments are so close together. Each monument is beautiful and you can reflect on all the wars for which the US has deployed manpower and the Americans who have given their lives for others...

A sobering reminder of war

By GMH153 |

The walls of names of those that gave the ultimatum sacrifice during and since the Vietnam War is a very sobering experience More so when relatives have left tributes flags and flowers

Like a blade

By Lorenzo P68 |

Like a blade that cuts through the green meadows and an infinite series of names on the black marble. In its simplicity this memorial expresses the drama of the countless losses suffered.

Very Moving

By Mark |

This was my first chance to see the wall. even at night, there is a somber majesty to the wall. well worth my time to come and pay my respects.

Bring your tissues

By Judy T |

The emotional impact this memorial has is astounding. To be able to just stand and absorb the history of the memorial is amazing.

Well Done

By Bertram S |

This memorial is really worth seeing. It’s beautifully done – walls and walls of names of Americans killed in this war. You’d never find one person in the midst of it if it weren’t for the books of names and directions on either side of the memorial.

Sobering memorial

By UCF_Shipper |

Absolute must see. Both my father and father-in-law were in Vietnam and fortunately came home when so many did not. As my son remarked, there are too many names. I don’t think he knew the truth to those words. An incredible memorial to those who lost their lives. A must see in Washington.

Visit to the Vietnam War Memorial

To do in Washington DC, the wreaths of flowers and the wall with all the names of the fallen soldiers are impressive!

By TravelrKB |

Amazing memorial to those who served and lost their lives during the Vietnam war. So sad that there were so many names on the wall.

incredible

By Tori |

the monument itself is a tad underwhelming, but seeing all of the names and being reminded of all of our soldiers is truly a humbling and intense experience.

Vietnam

By Bill |

It was quite moving to see such a long list of names of those who gave their lives in Vietnam. They also have a guide to look up names of your own loved ones.

Wreaths at memorial

By MariaWaltham |

This is such an important memorial to the Vietnam veterans and to those still MIA. I don't have a family member honored here but still found the directories of those honored important to look at. The sheer number of endless pages of names is enough to remind you of the losses from this war. I was with my 19 year old niece and I think those directories were a good start to understand this wall. We happened to be there as Christmas wreaths were laid by the panels and stopped to look at a Christmas tree filled with homemade decorations from groups honoring veterans.

Well done tribute!

By Anna M |

A little like walking into a trench... well designed tribute to those who died in this awful war. If you know anyone who perished, it is important to find their names to pay honor. The polished stones are so reflective and capture the light of the sky and greens of the trees. It is a restful place.

First trip to DC

By S6792XGmichaelc |

Well done, very touching when you see all the people that gave their lives. I feel very sheltered to have. It realized just how many people died. We owe so much to our armed forces . We have so much because of their sacrifice

Smaller than expected

By Stuart |

good to visit, but this is smaller than expected ... fits well into the area, and worth the visit. recommended

Chills everytime

A beautiful monument that deserves more recognition. Visiting on Memorial Day was a true highlight that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

A memorial with meaning

By WCoats |

The Memorial seems simple and somewhat unimpressive, but it is the most powerful memorial I have ever experienced. The names of our dead solders are carved in marble chronologically. A walk from the beginning of the memorial to the end reflects America's experience with the war itself. At first there are one or two names but as you walk through time the list gets longer and longer as your walk descends deeper and deeper. It has a powerful impact

Not just a marble wall, an experience

By Duane P |

Anyone visiting the DC area I feel this is a must see. It’s more than just a wall, It’s a sobering and humbling experience. The volume of names of lives lost is overwhelming. I had several family members that served in Vietnam, including a cousin whose name is one the wall. I put a lot of time into researching what happen to him and along the way learned details of the 29 Marines that died with that day. Each name is a person who had hopes and dreams that were cut short. Walk the wall, reflect the tragedy of those lost, the impact to their families, and the sacrifice they made for this country. If I had to sum it up I’d say it’s an experience, not just visiting a marble wall.

Patriotism

By Leonardo Martins |

The Vietnam War Memorial is a Patriotic Experience in the National Mall, it’s a respectful and a symbol of what war has caused around the world.

emotionally moving

By Cory |

The magnificence in this memorial lies simply in its plainness. The names etched on that wall are what it is all about, and should give anyone pause about the magnitude of war. My uncle served, (not on that wall thank God) and knowing how badly it hurt my grandparents to see him go, left me choked up walking by this wall. Worth visiting to anyone. 2013 visit

Family Name

I have seen the traveling wall before. Seeing the one in DC is remember able. We located my uncle's name on the wall dies in Vietnam.

moving and sad

By LisaMNUSA |

A very moving tribute to the fallen soldiers. It is just next to Lincoln memorial. I was sad to see so many lost lives during the war.

Names upon names......

By FIL M |

When you see the names upon names of the fallen, it truly brings a lump to your throat. This is a thoughtful tribute to all the fallen from this conflict.

a sobering wall that moves you to tears

By mwhamburger |

so many died and you can only wonder - for what? While there a group alternated in reading the names of each one which must have been a horrendous task (it was Veteran's Day).

Somber place to visit.

By 1chunkyguy |

This was our 3rd time in Washington DC and the 1st time visiting this memorial. It’s very somber with a lot of older veterans looking at names or just sitting around talking. As a vet myself I can only imagine the feeling of finding your dad, brother, uncle, or best friends name on the wall.

Beautiful

By haknyc |

This is a very somber memorial. It was so perfectly designed. It is stark and raw. Definitely visit-

Rolling Thunder

By Maritza C |

Always a moving and somber memorial to visit. It is quite lovely and serene. Everyone is so respectful when visiting. It always brings tears to my eyes to see the items left behind for those lost souls. Vietnam Vets were treated so poorly upon their return that it is a testament to their resilience when you see so many visiting the memorial and finding the names of those buddies they lost. It is an honor to be able to thank them and pay your respects. A must see in DC.

Great memorial

By Jack |

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a memorial dedicated to the many American soldiers who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. This memorial is on the National Mall and I highly recommend visiting it.

Eerie and beautiful

By Ajerseybear |

The amount of names engraved on this memorial is simply mind boggling and very tragic. The polish of the stone is so brilliant that everything nearby is clearly reflected.

We should never forget!

By Ajaxme |

This ia a beautiful reflective space in the midst of the monuments. The wreaths for the holidays were lovely and the park guides were very helpful and shared great information

Very moving and wonderful tribute

By Fair Pricing |

So very glad that I was able to spend time visiting this Memorial. This particular Memorial, and the Korean War Memorial are my favorites to visit for reflection of those who sacrificed so much for our freedom.

A MOVING EXPERIENCE

By Cary L |

I had been hearing about this memorial ever since it was built and looked forward to seeing it on my first trip to DC since then. I was not disappointed. The simple black granite walls covered with names of Americans killed during that war force you to pause and reflect on it. Nearby are statues depicting groups of male and female soldiers during the war. However you felt about the war itself, you will be moved by this memorial.

Take the time to think.

By SeniorTravelerTF |

Like the Lincoln Memorial, the power of this memorial is not solely, or even principally, in its design. This is a memorial that is best sampled slowly, bringing back the memories of that war and those times. The names forbid us to make it an abstract construct. Maybe its value is in the questions it forces us to ask rather than the answers it provides.

How could you not honor this memorial by going to see it ?

By Timezone Travelers |

There really isn't anything to say that hasn't already been said. It is perhaps one of the best known memorials. You can just feel the sadness and dedication oozing from the wall and the people there to see it.

A dream come true after 41 years

I've admired n respected Vietnam privates n soldiers who fought for our west n against the nasty Vietcong n communism since i was a kid of 7 years. I have seen hundreds of Vietnam movies n documentaries with my family n friends about this war. When I went to the military service i thought Im born too late otherwise I could have served in Nam. simple but elegant

one of the best/finest memorials on the mall. 10/10 definitely recommend. so simple yet absolutely incredible.

Must-See

By Shayla |

There's really no reason not to stop here, as it's right next to the Lincoln Memorial and it's a free walk-up memorial. It won't take long to walk it and it's really just a nice memorial to visit and remember our history.

Beautiful and moving

By MrMrsHappyR |

Very moving tribute to those lost during The Vietnam War. Features three names of all those lost over a large series of walls while serving during the war. Sad that the list is so long

A Memorial of the Soldiers of Vietnam

By Ilene B |

This Memorial is emotional to some people give people their space. There was a man who served standing by the names of the soldiers who gave their life for our freedom. We went early so not many people there.

A very subtle yet powerful statement

By Shelly M |

I had long wanted to visit this memorial and finally made it. I thought at first, just looking at the long strip of marble from quite a distance, it was too simple. As I slowly walked closer, I began to feel the enormity of it growing, in size and power. Finally within arms reach, I could feel the sadness and loss ovewhelming me.

Thought-provoking!

By Kathy D |

I was a teenager during the Vietnam War. I know many of my age-peers who served there. Some of them have been scarred for life. What they went through deserves a memorial like this one.

Vietnam Memorial

By Jessica K |

This memorial is easy to access and close to the Lincoln Memorial. The wall of names as well as the individual statues nearby are really a sad reminder of that dreadful war. There are bathrooms and drinking fountains nearby. There is a ledger for anyone who is looking for a particular name, and the wall of names is from earliest to last. Very powerful memorial.

Breathtaking and overwhelming

By shanac2008 |

It's been my dream to see this wall in person, as a family member's name is on it. It was overwhelming to see how many names are on the wall - it really puts things in perspective. Loved our visit.

Review

By Anne S |

Beautiful. Stunning. A quiet spot that brings in history and charming surroundings, along with the lessons of the past

Moving

By rmpangui |

This is a monument with the names of the soldiers and ictims listed in books and engraved ond a wall.

Sobering

By 2BEis2SKI |

This is a living wall in that visits often include mementos from a loved one placed at the foot of the wall. There are 2 books that allow you to better find a loved one. The wall itself sobering and heart wrenching. Regardless of the political discourse and reaction to the war here and abroad, these soldiers still made the ultimate sacrifice.

To see if you walk around the Mall

By Sylvie R |

We just passed this impressive Memorial, where all the veterans' names are written on a wall. This Memorial is located in the Mall, a huge park.

Thought provoking memorial

By SDCooks |

This is an incredibly moving memorial to the lives lost in the Vietnam War. It's simple and it's overwhelming....the population of a small city etched in stone. So much given and so much lost. It was very different in person than the pictures I have seen.

A must visit

By Leslie A |

This is the most sobering monument in DC. When you enter the wall's path you will be immersed in a low volume atmosphere. You might then see the curious, or the related. Maybe a tear, or someone weeping. It is still an occasion that resonates. And the simplicity of the site, a wall with names, was a master stroke of tribute.

Very Moving

By Gmabert |

Looking at 58,000 names and realizing that is someone's loved one who never came home, was very humbling.

A Solemn and Impactful Memorial

By the_tool_man |

Regardless of your opinion of the Vietnam War, or War in general, you cannot fail to recognize the enormous sacrifice of over 58,000 men and women who died in the war. The sheer magnitude of their numbers really sinks in when you see each and every name carved into the black stones. This is a must-see.

Impactful

By JNYCwriter |

There is something profound about this memorial. It seems understated, but as you walk in the wall keeps going and going. Name after name after name. If you are visiting the Mall this is one memorial you cannot miss. It is within easy walking distance from the Lincoln Memorial.

This is so moving, especially when you consider that we had no business being there.

By Kathy C |

I am 77 and it was my generation that fought in this war. It is a solemn place for me. I found it very moving even though there were young folks with kids who were (unmasked) fooling around in front of it and posing for selfies and pictures. Still, it is very moving to be in the monument when you are alone or with those who are moved by it.

You can feel the pain of a war

By stephenchan |

Another must visit place in Washington. Flowers, walls with thousands of names on it. you can feel the pain created by a war.

Could not keep my eyes dry.

By drtom100 |

Seeing this is a moving experience. It's unexplaonable what it is like to see your old high school friends names engraved on this wall. I can't even keep my eyes dry when thinking about it. Such a tribute to those who gave their lives for their country. We took our grandson to see it, and explained the great significance of the names.

Eye opener

By Steve L |

To see the amount of names on the memorial is a real eye opener. We went in the evening so saw it in the day light and night. A must see and so close to the Lincoln memorial.

Beautifully designed and attended to.

By Ann Capatch |

An actual vietnam vet was there supervising the taking down of the Christmas tree that had photos of lost soldiers on it. Worth visiting.

Moving if you understand the symbolism

By Scott M |

We were on a monument tour and the woman pointed out the nurse statue and the fact that the third soldier is a composite of all races in our country.

The names have the alpha and omega meeting in the middle - the first and last to die in the war.

It was a moving visit for us.

Moving, if you know one of the heros

By Kevin Y |

This is a lovely exhibit, and the sheer number of lives lost is overwhelming, as each person is listed. If you are not personally connected with the war, you might not find this a memorable experience, as I did not.

Beautiful Details

By Wright |

Highly recommend seeing this but specifically on a tour. I say this because there is so much history, thought, and detail that went into this memorial and all the others. The tour allows for you to learn all those fun facts.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

By Daniel Forssell |

A monument that must be visited during your stay at the National Mall. Atmospheric and very visual monument to the passions war creates.

A Sombre Moment

By Sandy H |

Many will say that Vietnam Vets are the least celebrated of all war veterans but this Memorial does them proud

Sobering

By Will J |

It's pne thing to see the photos of this monument, but it's entirely another thing to visit in person. Seeing all the names of those who were killed or are missing in action was very disquieting. So many young men and women..
Such a tragedy. One old veteran was there with his family looking for the names of his friends and comrades.

Definitely a Daytime visit.

By Greg E W |

Too dark and not as impressive as it is in the light of day. Especially if looking for a particular name.

Very moving!

By MabelSeniors |

Park Services volunteers were extremely helpful. They located our veteran immediately and offered to make a rubbing for his spouse that has never been. Rough ride for a wheelchair but they have added a rubber matting that does help greatly.

A must see. A great memorial for the fallen soldiers.

By NikaNumber1 |

It’s quite astounding to see the number of names engraved on the walls along their memorial. It feels like it goes on for a long jaunt. It’s haunting to see the names, even if none of them are familiar.

I can imagine what a pivotal moment it must be for the families left behind to see names they recognize on the wall or for those that survived.

It’s a wonderful memorial to all of the brave soldiers that fought so valiantly for our country and sad at the same time, to know they perished serving for our country.

Worth a Visit

By Mark&Rosa |

A fitting tribute to the US military personnel that lost their lives in this war. The order of the names on the wall was quite confusing, there did not seem to be any real order.

Honorable

By Shelby A |

What a beautiful way to honor our Vietnam veterans. A must see in the National Mall for sure and it is pretty close to the Lincoln Memorial.

Very moving

By Steven W |

We wen at night so it certainly added to the atmosphere. Easy to find names. A moving experience and worthwhile putting on the list of places to visit.

First visit

By Dean G |

I looked forward to this visit for years. It did not disappoint. A solemn visit, seemed so much quieter, peaceful, people touching names... it made feel more...more than other memorials I have visited.

Solemn reminder of the cost

By dbinhou7511 |

Always try to read some of the names on the wall, hoping that by reading them, they will be remembered for the cost they paid. I think this memorial was wonderfully conceived and executed.

Memorial weekend trip

By Steph361 |

Very moving experience. My husband, a Purple Heart recipient, had this on his bucket list. The memorial was not crowded at all. Rick received many “Thank you for your service” comments.

Sobering place

By Jay J |

This was my first time at the memorial. I located the name of the MIA bracelet that I have worn for over 30 years. This place will place you in a state of awe as you walk the length of the wall and see the 58,000 plus names. Do not miss on a visit to DC.

Overwhelming experience

By June W |

Seeing a loved one's name on this wall was an emotional experience. So many made the ultimate sacrifice. It's still painful. Don't miss this memorial.

great, ive been to DC multiple times but I always check this area out. Why not? You are so close. I really like DC

Moving and somber memorial.

By Chris D |

A solemn and moving tribute and memorial to those who did not come home from their service in Vietnam. The volunteers are excellent in assisting with the location of names for those looking for a particular service member. The items that are left at the Wall add a poignancy to the experience.

A must visit to remember and reflect.

So Many Gave So Much

By Jax Cracker |

Veteran Volunteers are at the wall to tell stories from history and explain the layout of the wall. I wish I had more time there. Chances are, there's someone on that wall from among your family or the family of friends

Such a Moving Experience

By Bob Kramer |

When we visited the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C., it was Fall season, and the main tourist season was over. I mention this, since you too will enjoy all these fine memorials much more with less crowded conditions. Now, back to the memorial. Our breaths were taken away. My wife and I just walked up and down the wall, and barely spoke a word, as we remembered these fine men and women who gave their lives in the war. I looked up a couple names of men from my hometown, paid my respects at the site of their names, and continued on. Such a moving experience, and I hope that you too find this a rewarding day.

An unpopular War!

Me being a Marine that spent two tours 64-68 wounded Purple Heart was a moving moment for me. Got to look in the directory for fallen brothers and touch their names. Chills....

Memorial - Vietnam War

By Robert S |

As a teenager, I experienced this war on television and in the news. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a national memorial of the United States of America, honoring members of the US armed forces who died in the Vietnam War or are considered missing. A sad memory.

Awesome

By Lynda P |

Hard to put into words the uniqueness of this monument. Hidden from the street / city, you can't see it. The wall is hidden and appears to just be a continuous, grassy hill that meanders as a park from The Lincoln Memorial all the way down to The Washington Monument. ( It's to the NW side of The Lincoln Memorial. ) Parking was not difficult on the street at this time of year. Definitely worth the effort. Don't miss the 2 statues close by that are very life like soldiers. One is dedicated to the women that served, the other are 3 male soldiers found near the flagpole.

A solemn tribute

By phvi2617 |

This a simple and somber memorial, unlike any other on the National Mall. The focal point is not a grand monument, but the names of the more than 58,000 fallen soldiers themselves. It has a lot of interesting symbolism and history, and is a very fitting place to honor the memory of those who served.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

By Lottelli |

The design is interesting and the memorial itself is quite moving. It is shaped like a V and on the wall it lists all of the names of the soldiers lost in Vietnam. There is also a podium with a file on where you can search a name and it tells you where to find it on the wall. I thought this was a great feature.

Somber Memorial

By DLP |

This memorial will have an affect on you as you read all the names on this wall. You will feel the grief and despair at the loss of all these young lives. This visit I went at night and there were spotlights on each segments of the wall. It was dark, it was quiet and it was sad, but a place that should be visited.

saddest spot

By mabjohnson |

I am a baby boomer and those that died during the Vietnam War were from my generation and this site is always very emotional for me.

Fifty years later.

A very moving memorial. Search names (there are books that aid in finding your loved ones) and say a prayer for these brave Americans.

Nice way to honor the fallen

By stewbaker151 |

I’ve been 3 times. My opinion is, it does not disappoint. It is sad and it is moving. Thank goodness this country has a memorial to Vietnam War casualties that we can all agree upon.

Very solemn

By Glenda C |

I always have to visit the wall. My cousin's name is on the wall so it has a personal draw for me. But seeing all the names really makes you stop and think about the lives that were lost to insure freedom for Vietnam as well as to protect this from spreading to other places.

Wonderful !

By karen19020 |

Great memorial, such a beautiful tribute. Well done and beautifully preserved. The grounds are stunning ! A somber experience.

: The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a moving place that honors those who served. Its evocative design and the Wall of the Fallen make a lasting impact.

Our Nation’s Open Wound

By jcantu409 |

This memorial wall is intensely moving and emotional to see in person. It’s designed as a scar in the earth to remind us that not all wounds heal but we can remember and mourn those that have fought for our rights and our freedoms, giving the ultimate sacrifice.

Powerful

By David |

A beautiful and impactful tribute to all those that were lost.e to use guide book to find name of a relative that drowned in 1968, 9 weeks after being drafted. We know nothing else of his demise. A personal touch to a life lost. I never met the man and not too many are left that knew him. I was glad to pay person respects to him and his sacrifice.

Beautiful and sad, all at the same time.

By Meg Takace |

Seeing all of those names was heartbreaking, and great perspective for my kids. A volunteer was really helpful, and found the name of a friend my father served with. She also gave us paper so we could do his name rubbing.

Sad but important memorial

By Vacationmode |

It was very sad to see all those names on that long memorial wall. It makes you appreciate, even more, the huge sacrifices each man and woman makes while serving in the military.

A must see

By Renee H |

I've been before, and when I have children who go, I made them search for certain names--really underscored how many names are on the memorial. Very few trinkets/rememberances left at the wall this time (could be it was right before Coronavirus social distancing was asked for).

Thank you for your sacrifice

By SER |

As a veteran, it is just a reminder that we do as we are ordered with no questions for our country. Great way to pay our respects for our fellow Americans that sacrificed more than we can ever give.

Touching visit

By Rosie C |

There is a book at the entrance to the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial which includes the names of those who were killed in Vietnam. This book tells you the location of service men and women on the wall so that you can easily find a name.
It is tremendously sad to see the wall but it is important.

Wall of names

By Acineto |

The memorial is located in the Constitution Gardens, on the Lincoln Memorial end. The long black wall is described with names. There is a single path along it so it can get packed if busy.

Moving.....superb mall

By Bernard H |

The monument itself (as well as the statues surrounding it) is quite sober,........just that the immeeeeeeeense list of "combat deaths" gives the scale of these tragedies!
We were there on “Memorial Day” and the devotion and signs of respect by a whole people united towards their victims gave us the shivers!
What (one more!) Beautiful unanimity in the star-spangled banner shows us this people.....all United! (that commands respect!)
Please note that you really have to explore this part of the mall (counting the morning) to discover all these beautiful country monuments, each more moving than the other!
God bless America!

Reverent Memorial

By Dylan3961 |

The Vietnam Wall Memorial is a must see though it is an eerie feeling thinking about all of those persons who sacrificed their lives. There is a list of people on the Wall who died in Vietnam so one can find the area where their name is listed. Although it is a somber feeling, it is quite moving.

Liked it a Lot more than expected

By lexi3 |

One end points to the Washington monument and the other to the Lincoln Memorial. We were guided by a Vietnam Vet who loved his work. The memorial contains the names of every serviceman and woman who gave his life for the cause, listed chronologically. I hope it brings peace to those who lost family and friends.

True American Heroes!

By Stephen S |

After exiting the Lincoln Memorial we walked along the wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. What a somber reminder of the price that was paid for our freedom by so many who gave all while under great scrutiny. Rest in Peace True American Heroes!

New emotions each time

By Chris L |

This was my third visit and it retains an emotional gut punch. This time we visited at night and that adds to the feelings one gets. I have been saddened at this site (I am a Vietnam Vet), but this time was angered when seeing all the names and knowing how much was mishandled by the war's civilian leaders.

Great memorial

By April C |

There isn't much to say or see here especially if you don't have anyone on the wall. However, it was nice just to walk along and see the things left behind for these heros. It was nice just to pay respects. If you do have someone on the wall you can pick up a piece of paper for an etching of their name.

Sobering experience of Vietnam War

By adventrskr |

If you look at this memorial in the context of the lives lost overseas, it is very sobering. Each one of the names was part of a bigger family and their lives were ended prematurely. Was the loss of life worth it? You decide as you walk among the names of those lost and imagine them as people not just a name on the wall.

Haunting

You have to go. You see your own reflection mixed with the names of our hero's, gives a chill as you remember them.

A Wonderful Tribute to Forgotten Heroes

By Anne O |

It is quite moving to see the name of every American who gave his or her life in the Vietnam War engraved on this monument. Although that war occupied a sad time in US history, I hope this solemn space in some way recognizes the bravery and patriotism of those who participated in it. It is a must see for all visitors to DC.

A must see

By Bergmom |

We saw this at night, which offers a sort of eerie reverence. I would like to see it during the day though, too, in order to fully absorb the sheer number of names on the wall. Overheard a tour guide here, talking about one of the young men on the wall and talking about the sacrifice of so many young men and women… something all Americans should see and hear.

Countless names

By Daniel C |

In a quiet park like area in Washington DC you'll find a long trench that you can easily walk through, on one side of the trench, the wall of the trench is covered in thousands of names; those who did not return from fighting in the Vietnam war. Beside the names of every soldier, it tells you if they were either KIA or MIA and the list goes one and on, stretching from the very small and razor thin edge of the wall, to the large and wide section in the middle. You may notice that the wall is curved, that it suddenly bends so many degrees, but the reason for this is that from a bird's eye view the wall looks like the letter V. Near this memorial you'll find statues to commemorate the Black soldiers and women's contributions to the war so if you find them first then you'll know the memorial is not too far away. I came here in 2012 on a day long bus tour; we were driven here on the bus so I don't know exactly how to get here by foot but you should be able to ask a taxi driver for a quick lift. While the monument itself does not take long to walk along, it would take hours to go through all of the names of those who did not return from a war that is still within America's living memory.

Spend a little quiet time here

For me, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is the most poignant of all the monuments and memorials in Washington. The black granite wall, with names of the fallen, is a spot that is always moving to me.

Quiet walk of remembrance

By Traveller |

I visited the Vietnam War Memorial several times during my visit to Washington DC in July 2021. The memorial is definitely worth visiting and can be combined with visiting several other nearby memorials such as the Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, FDR Memorial, Martin Luther King Memorial and World War 2 Memorial. I walked slowly past the walls with the names of the soldiers killed during the Vietnam War inscribed. All I can do each visit is pay my respects as the number of names is staggering.

Sobering

By Bcrots88 |

Unbelieveable to see all the peoples names on the wall. It's so sad and sobering to walk past and see the veterans touching the wall and crying. Worth a visit.

A beautiful and touching memorial

By Alejandro B |

I have visited this monument on two separate occasions and have been deeply moved both times. This is a must see sight on the National Mall.

Take your friends

Interesting location and amazing sculptures. This exhibit is in an area where you and your friends can see many things.

Been a long time, but still remember that visit on Veteran's Day long ago

By Brandon K |

I went to school here and was interested in a girl. She asked me to go with her to the Vietnam memorial on Veteran's Day. I said yes but had no idea what I was in for. I will always remember that day as it is etched in my brain forever. There is something that will never leave you when you see people at the wall finding their brothers (literally or figuratively) and breaking down in tears, leaving behind mementos, or just getting a rubbing or photo of a name. This trip to DC, I got to take my 8 year old to see the memorial. Coming back again brought be back to that day back in college and I teared up just a bit. This is still an amazing place to be and feel it come over you.

Vietnam Memorial DC

By RVSVD |

Very moving memorial. When you look at each stone and see all the names, you can't help but feel sorry for all the families and soldiers who gave their lives for freedom. I am a vet, so this really touched my heart. God Bless all the families of the Vietnam Veterans and I pray for the peace of God to be over you. Thank you to the memorial staff for keeping up all the memorials.

Fav place in DC

By seanworc |

Vietnam Veterans Memorial, designed by a very young Maya Lin, is my favorite and most sacred space in DC. Right near the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall.
A place of profound sadness and loss. I love the way that the names retain the moisture in the night and the water burns off in the morning sun. The honorees' names come to life. Please honor our war dead and visit.

A must see

By Richard B |

This is a special place for me. As you approach you there names and then you realize just how many panels there are, how tall they get and how many names. Each one is missed by their mother, father, sister, brother, daughter or son.

Humbling

By Sandy W |

Wonderful to see and very humbling. I think everyone should visit this memorial - not to be missed. Grounds very well kept.

The Wall stretches on, and on...

By Austin H |

The nighttime tour of the monuments made it difficult to fully realize the magnitude of this wall. But as I walked past, the names continued on. The layout of the wall is pretty neat as it rises out of the ground and then fades back into the ground, almost as if to signify the rise and fall of veterans in our country; the never ending need for their sacrifice, and the significant size of sacrifices that have been made.

Sooo many names, too many names

By 941debwagner |

I went here yesterday and since it was a cloudy day not many people around. I saw a guy in a wheelchair sitting looking at the wall then I saw him try to roll his wheelchair back up the ramp so I asked him if he needed a push at first he said no but then it started to rain so he said yes and we sat under a tree and talked for an hour. His name is Alan hes an American Indian homeless vet, his brother died in the war. He sang me a song he wrote with words that came to him while meditating at the wall. I gave him some lunch money and left him in a dry spot.

Through teary eyes, a friendship is remembered...

By Antiquetuck |

It is/should be hallowed ground. I got to revisit a childhood friend.
I'd been to 'The Wall' before, probably in the 80's or early 90's. I'd visited 'The Wall' to visit one of my school chums who didn't make it home from Viet Nam. I have a chill now just remembering touching his name and pointing it out to my wife - who had never been to D.C. or seen 'The Wall.' My eyes are misting now.

Brilliant in its simplicity

By montanapescado |

When I first heard what design had been selected for this memorial, I thought it grossly inartistic and unworthy of what was to be memorialized. When I saw it in person , I realized how wrong I was. This is utterly compelling and a must stop for DC visitors.

Solemn and Reflective

By Andrew Tsui |

We felt an immense amount of reflection and respect whilst walking past this structure. To see the names on the wall, each of which being a soldier who put themselves in front of our country in order to defend it. It's hard to imagine just how much courage it would've taken, and it is quite thought evoking to see family members, friends, and other relatives mourn and visit their deceased.

The architectural intent of this location matches the atmosphere perfectly. Whilst society has made strides to move on, like a lingering cut, it is still there deep within the history of the country and in our hearts.

A must see.

By Moira W |

Sad yet comforting to see that they have been honored in a beautiful monument. Easy access. For my generation a must see.

I Hate War

By Rita S |

The veterans coming home from this "War" were not welcomed home as they should have been and we as a nation should still be ashamed of the action of those who were so very hateful and disrespectful. Today when I see a Vietnam War Veteran, I approach them with a smile on my face, hand out to shake, I say "Welcome Home, Thank You for Your Services." WWII Veterans I approach the same way, Thanking them for their services. It was an honor for me to pay my respect to these amazing men and women who gave their lives to fight for freedom.

Hollow-Ground

By Kelly-ann Brooks |

Wow, you will not be disappointed. If you have family or not, knowing these men and women died for our freedom is humbling. Worth a visit, plus it's free. Don't do the BUS tours, it's absolutely foolishness. Google any info. you may need and it's basically a more accurate info, you will be getting.

A beautiful tribute

By jerserygirl5 |

Well done memorial to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Brought tears to our eyes to see how many young people died in what many considered a hopeless war.

A Must Visit

By Bill2025 |

A very moving tribute to the fallen soldiers of the Vietnam War. There are over 50,000 names on the wall, so if you’re looking for a specific name do your research before attending.

To cross in silence and think

By mikerusco |

Less conspicuous than the other memorials, perhaps because it is a historically difficult war for the USA, but it must be crossed, especially for those of my generation who as children lived it in the movies.

Very dispiriting to see all the names

By G_EvansWales |

A memorial to all the very many men that died in Vietnam. So sad to see such a pointless loss of life.

Very detailed

By helenandpaul13 |

We visited here during an evening guided tour. I twas late in the evening and it's situated just below and to the left of the Lincoln memorial as you stand with the memorial behind you. However, the memorial has the names of every American soldier who was a victim of the war and what's impressive is that the names start in 1959 from half was down the memorial, and in a circular route come back to the last victims of 1975, right next to this. This was a deliberate act by the sculpture. The names are listed from the date they were listed as casualties, while at the top of the monument are catalogues in a rain proofed lecturn detailing everyone's names.

Emotional

By Kenzie M |

This is a memorial that hits you hard. The names on the walls make their sacrifice very real and very personal whether you knew anyone or not.

HEART WARMING POOL OF REMEMBRANCE

By Naina-Damani |

It is a National Memorial in Washington. It honours service members of the U.S. armed forces who fought in the Vietnam war who died in service. Calming place for a walk.

Worth a visit

By alexisrachelletx |

On a recent visit to DC, I visited almost all of the monuments and memorials with a couple of friends. I hadn't been to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial before. It's certainly worth a visit (as are all of the monuments/memorials), but, completed in 1982, it's one of the simpler memorials. The largest portion of the memorial is the Memorial Wall, which is made of two black granite walls on which the names of servicemen who fought in the Vietnam War and were declared dead (though not necessarily killed in action) or are still "missing in action" are etched. There is also a bronze statue ("The Three Servicemen") and a women's memorial at the site. While we were there, we saw an NPS employee or volunteer rubbing graphite on paper over a section of the Memorial Wall to make an impression (presumably of a family member or friend's name). It's well worth a visit if you're visiting the monuments/memorials!

There is much more to the layout than I knew before today. Our guide was helpful in explaining the design.

By PaulineMike |

Make sure to research the layout and design, or visit on a tour. The organizations of names and how the memorial was designed adds to the story.

Powerful and effective, best seen when the whether is bad and fewer people around

By dcsween |

It doesn't take long to see, but the experience can be profound. Maybe better to start at the eastern end, but OK to start on either. At first, its just a low black wall and you don't really notice that the dark is getting bigger. Then the names start and they just keep coming and coming. Presumably there was a turning point in the conflict itself, like there is when you turn, but it isn't a very acute turn and the list of names gets shorter very slowly again, just like the conflict.

Dedicated to all American soldiers dead or missing in Vietnam

By Walther von der Vogelweide |

Another memorial dedicated to all soldiers killed or missing in the long war in Vietnam. A life-size statue depicts three fighting soldiers in Vietnam. On the wall of the memorial are transcribed all the names of the dead or missing soldiers.

a wonderful way to experience the weight of the historical moment

By Supriya S |

excellent and outstanding and very moving
I would go again in a heartbeat
Just forgot to take photos

Sobering

By Kmusikgal |

Met our expectations and then some. The reminder of the history was overwhelming which left us with a deepened sense of American pride yet, grief over the loss and the VW history. The anger over this "unnecessary war" is still fresh for my parent and it was really emotionally challenging being there.

Thankful for the ultimate sacrifice

By Greg2117 |

This memorial is a tribute to those who paid the ultimate price. I highly recommend taking the time to stop in and look for any names of the fallen either in the app or on the hard copy books and then go find them on the wall to pay your respects. It’s also close to the Lincoln memorial, reflecting pool and Korean memorial.

Best Memorial in Washington

By Patrick & Danielle |

I loved this memorial. I wish the statue had of been closer to the wall. We had the honor of coming across a note and ring left in a zippy bag.. very moving reading the letter. I'm not sure what I expected but it seemed unfinished. It made me wonder what the park service does with the things left at the memorial?

A Sober Place for Reflection

By TravelerCentralFLA |

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a sober place to reflect on the sacrifices made by the men and women who served in the Vietnam Conflict. It includes several statues that honor the courage of those who served. The center piece of the memorial is the long wall containing the names of those who were killed or missing in action during the Vietnam War. It contains some 60,000 or so names organized in chronological rather than alphabetical order. I was looking for a specific name on the wall and I was able to find what panel and line it was on with an online search. It is staggering to think that many of the names of men and women on the wall represent a young person of 18 to 20 years old. This is not a place to go to have fun, but it is a valuable place to reflect and be grateful. I was glad to be able to take my teenage son and explain to him the price his grandparents’ generation paid. I highly recommend a visit to the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial.

Very emotional

By sunni014 |

Walking by this wall and remembering all of my classmates that did not make it home from this war was very emotional. So glad we spent time here.

Good

By michelle r |

Good monument to reflect the tragedy of war and how many people are affected by it. So sad to see all the names on the wall.

Just Amazing

By cttcamarocar |

One of the best Memorials in DC. It is a must see when you are in DC. Along with many, this is a cornerstone of the mall.

Oh well

By meckioi |

What can I say?

It is a black wall with too many names inscribed to it, somber, yes, but underwhelming.

So much loss.....

By Ogadoo |

Thousands and thousands of names of the fallen in battle. If we could just make war a vulgarity, mankind would lose interest.

Just the amount of names is mind blowing

By Deana H |

The significance to the design makes the memorial that much better. The thought behind each aspect gives greater understanding. The sheer number of names on the wall is devastating. It is beautiful though.

Appropriate and Respectful

By Footprints and Forks |

I found this memorial very appropriate to commemorate those who fought this great war. All names are included on a very long wall, and lots of quality statues to symbolize the important moments and lifestyle of those in Vietnam. Definitely worth spending a solid moment here in DC to remember.

Overwhelming

By ctimms125 |

We were there on Veterans day. The names were read out loud continuously over our visit and to see the timeline and the love is overwhelming.

All countries represented at this memorial.

By DDR1234 |

It was great to see our own country being represented : South Africa. Life like images adds to the experience.

Somber

By Windygnf |

This memorial is very impressive and sad, but worth visiting. If you lost a loved one, you can locate the panel where their name is engraved through the directory at either end of the wall.

Fitting Tribute to our Fallen Soldiers in Vietnam!

By MidwestKathM |

A truly inspiring memorial to our soldiers who fought and died in Vietnam or as a result of that war. Having worn two POW/MIA bracelets for years, I visit the Wall every time I'm in our nation's capital and find their names to remember each man and say Thank You! It is so moving to see the tributes left, the rubbings being made, the tears and hugs of families and friends visiting to honor a loved one. Generally there are helpful volunteers stationed there to answer questions and help find the location of a particular soldier.

A great space to quietly reflect and remember a horrific war

By 321rupertr |

We came across this understated but emotionally charged memorial when heading back to the city from the Lincoln Memorial.

Vietnam was a controversial war as our many others in history, many thousands lost their lives and this memorial is a fitting reminder and a reason to pause and reflect in a beautiful tranquil setting.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

By The Baobab Republic |

Every time we come here, our memories take us back to the past. Hope our children will face no wars.

In memory of those who died for their country.

By Piotr B |

The outdoor exhibition and especially the wall - the Wall - make a colossal impression. There were no winners or losers in this war. There were only its victims... and this monument is a kind of epitaph for them.

Moving experience

By David H |

It is seemingly just a wall of names, but those thousands of names tell their own story of this event which happened, for many of us, in our own lifetime.

stark reality check

By kelly |

it is a little overwhelming to see all of the names on that wall. And so sad to see the familiy members and friends of those names who are there to pay tribute to their loved ones. It is a stark reminder of the loss and devastation to families, that war causes

Overwhelming

By 961daleh |

It's a truly sobering experience to walk the length of this monument, watch children transferring names of relatives, and finally begin to comprehend the tremendous loss of life war inflicts.

Interesting memorial

By Amy D |

I have previously studied this Memorial at university but was still impressed by it in person. It's a fantastic memorial that makes us question how we remember war.

Tribute

By Cacau E J |

Similarly simple , beautiful and sad because it honors those brave Americans who fell in the Vietnam War . Thousands of names.

Moving and thought provoking

By Travel_Girl_Reviews |

Irrespective of your background or interests, this is a moving and thought provoking site to visit.

Thankfully it is nestled in a peaceful park to relax and consider our history a little further.

A must do in DC!

A sad and stunning tribute to the men who lost their lives

By ThoughtsFromAPage |

I always make a point to visit the Vietnam Memorial to give tribute to the men who lost their lives in this conflict. The memorial is so well done and a fitting memorial.

Very dramatic, very beautiful, very moving

By kathymY1120SY |

You've all seen pictures of this memorial, but you're never prepared to see it in reality. It's a beautiful monument, that has a very moving affect on you. Very well done!

I shared tears with many strangers

By richard sargent |

Extremely moving. I visited my cousins names and cried for each one of them. It makes no time when you are there. someone always seems to be around visiting. If you are looking for someone a park employee is there with a book and can tell you what panel to go to. A lot of pain there.

Memorial

By Andres72423 |

An iconic tourist spot where we are able to honor the contributions of doors who paid the ultimate sacrifice. These young men sacrificed and were often forgotten. To all those names on the wall we are forever grateful.

So sad that we lost all these lives

By htwh |

Took my 9 year old through, explained that the names were people who were killed (and maybe still MIS, excuse my ignorance). So many lives wasted for politician's goals. I played the Vietnam War music from Forrest Gump as we walked though, especially Jimi's All Along the Watchtower - added another dimension. I left with tears rolling down my cheeks.

Moving and emotional, a must-see

By Sarah C |

This was an extremely moving memorial, so meticulously created and respectfully kept. We spent longer than anticipated here and could not help feeling emotionally drained afterwards. A must-see to appreciate what effect the War had on the US

Part of History

So many names, freedom isn't free. The area is well maintained. We took a night tour and had a history lesson from our guide.

Family Vacation / June 2025

By Juan Velasquez |

Must see on your next visit to Washington DC, will not disappoint and extremely empowering to see the names of soldiers who died in this war.

Somber reminder

By dustythoughts |

This quiet, somber memorial is a reminder to us of the cost of war, not financially but in the overall cost to human life. The memorial is situated in the shadow of the Washington Memorial, which also reminded me of the social unrest in the States at the time of the Vietnam War. There's also a women's memorial to all of the women who served during this war, mostly as nurses. This entire memorial is an experience in reflecting on the past and how to not repeat our mistakes.

Small but take the time!

By TXMARTINS |

A wall of names of those that were lost in this war tucked into the hill along a beautiful boarded path illuminated by lights. Not visible from the street the black granite walls rose from the ground that was dug lower to stand as a symbol to honor Americans that served & sacrificed their lives in the Vietnam War as well as those unaccounted for. Best viewed at night. A quiet protected place unto itself designed by Maya Lin.

Always a very sobering reminder

By James Y |

I have been moved each time I visit the Memorial. I got to see the statue and the Vietnam War Nurse Memorial as well. Very appropriate.

A very humbling experience

By FBH611 |

See all those names reminds us to really appreciate our vets. It's a beautiful memorial.
There are catalogs by year to help in finding family and friend's names. The sculpture of the soldiers to the side of the monument is also very beautiful.

I need to learn history.

By Mark T |

I stopped by here on my way to The Lincoln Memorial. Please check the map because it was hard to find. The memorial was so beautiful. I saw flowers and some letters. Unlike The Korean War Memorial, there was no statue. But I saw a lot of names who served in the war. I was from Houston, TX. I met a lot of Vietnamese immigrants. They were so nice. I  need to know more about the war. Please visit here!

Very impactful memorial

By RandS_TX |

The wall of names is overwhelming. The scope of the people who died during this was startling. I really enjoyed the statue of the three soldiers.

A Moving Reminder

It was very emotional seeing the names of so many brave men and women who sacrificed their life for freedom.
Having a brother who served in Vietnam and know how many “close” calls he had really hit me hard! This is a must visit!

What Can Be Said?

By lofar_dog |

This Memorial doesn't need words...All the "words" that need saying are on The Wall.

I'm a veteran ; NOT a Viet vet. But I need a handkerchief every darn time I visit. Enough words.

Beautiful place in honor to the falling soldiers. Arround a beautiful parcel in the green. It’s good for a long walk. Grat for my self

words cannot describe the atmosphere

By Joanne |

This was just so awe inspiring. There were lots of veterans and I stood by as one vet was describing to another about one of their buddies listed on the wall - and it was just so sad. Its hard to believe that so many of these men are getting on and soon will be like WWII memorials with no one alive who can tell the stories. It is nice that there are books at each entrance where you can look up names and find where they are located. One of the best things to visit in DC.

Moving Historical War Memorial

By Joan C |

This monument is powerful and moving and brings home the feeling of war and the losses involved it war. It only touches on the number of casualties, not including civilian and non-American lives lost. Don't miss the nearby memorial to women who served in Viet Nam, which is also very moving. If you have a loved one who lost their life as a result of the war, there is a system where you can easily look up the placement of their name on the memorial.

I enjoyed a stroll along the wall

By travelbug |

The memorial is a wall with soldiers names built into the slope of a hill. I saw national park workers helping people get an impression of a name by shading over it onto paper with a pencil.
