Rockin rocks and a nice body of water in the high desert

By ronestout |

This park is very close to Prescott. It is definitely something to see and a bit of a surprise since the parking lot faces south, but to the north, over a rise are the granite dells rising out of the lake. It is a very pretty scene. It is definitely worth a visit. If you do not want to use the facilities and only sightsee, you do not have to pay.

I used to go there almost everyday after school, the place really quite and pretty beautiful and peaceful relaxing place you can enjoy the view or go hiking or kayaking the best time to visit is the early morning or sunset

I've hiked here before, this time we went Kayaking and it was so much fun

By Kimberly I |

The website for the Prescott outdoor adventures could have had some better info. My 10 year old daughter, who loves to Stand Up Paddle Board, was really excited to see that they had SUP rentals at Watson lake and was really looking forward to it. The website did NOT mention the minimum 100 pound weight requirement to take out any equipment on your own. So we got here and they wouldn't rent any SUP to my daughter, nor would they allow her a single kayak. As a result, she spent the first half of our Kayaking adventure feeling very disappointed. So they can certainly improve some of the upfront info that you receive. We also didn't find out until AFTER we paid, that our rental time started as soon as payment was made (meaning you definitely get less than an hour on the water if you only want an hour rental.) BUT... all that aside, the lake is gorgeous and very fun and easy to navigate on kayaks. We "docked" on some rocks and explored a bit and just enjoyed the scenery. The equipment was all in good shape and it was a great morning. Note--if you want to kayak, they don't rent them every day. Its usually Friday thru Sunday unless there is a special occasion or holiday.

Beautiful and Easy Hiking

By Greg B |

We stopped here on our way from the Grand Canyon to Prescott. Just a beautiful lake with many hiking options around the lake. It seems to be enjoyed by the locals using non-motorized boats and kayaks. Definitely worth the stop.

Visually amazing

By Brusta63 |

What an awesome place, you. An just sit and stare at all the rocks and colours and is has a peaceful and tranquil feel about it. Highly recommend you take time to check this place out

Spectacular

By Maureen R |

Wow, I was not expecting the beautiful scenery that Watson Lake provides. The rock formations against the lake are gorgeous. Pictures don't do it justice. It's $3 to park and you can walk the trails. You can stay for a shirt or long visit. Gym or hiking shoes are better but we were in sandals and did fine. A must see if you are in the area, you won't be disappointed.

AMAZING HIKE!!

By Rachel J |

This is by far one of the best hikes I have ever done. I even went back the next weekend to hike it again. First started at the Peavine trail and we ended up on the loop trail which was beautiful and a really great hike for those who love hiking over rocks and a more intense hike. I have recommended it to everyone who goes.

Beautiful lake with great views

By Kelly K |

Beautiful lake surrounded by mountains. Fantastic views. We played the frisbee golf course - super challenging with amazing views.

Lost By The Lake

By FiftyFifty5050 |

What a fabulous resource for the town of Prescott. For just $3 per car, we accessed the car park at Watson Lake on a Saturday afternoon, where a baby shower was taking place in the bandstand, families were playing on the field and lots of people were walking both themselves and, in some cases, their dogs around the lake, serious hikers, cyclists and runners were also out in force.

The rock formations around the lake are stunning, a weird reference but if you have seen the movie 'Galaxy Quest', it looks as if an army of rock monsters has tumbled down along the shore. The creamy yellow colour looks lovely in the sun and, further along the shore you find yourself walking through woods, at times waterlogged which, at this time of year when the branches are bare of leaves, look almost ethereal.

We studied the information boards and decided that we would walk around the lake and set off in good spirits. About half way around there was an option to stick with the main path - at that point still the Peavine Trail - or to go onto another path which takes a route closer to the shore of the lake; we decided to take the lakeside trail.

Further along this trail there was another decision to make, either stick to the 'water's edge' or take the higher trail. As the path by the water's edge was, at times, dipping into the water, we decided to go with the higher trail. The instructions were to follow the white spots, painted along the way on the rocks. The information board stated that this was a 'technical' trail and should be taken with care.

We followed this for quite some way and enjoyed it, apart from one spot where.we had to scramble down, it could be followed easily and without too much exertion. Then the dots seemed to run out and the trail rejoined the main pathway for a bit.

On finding the dots starting up again, we went back onto the technical trail but soon ran out of dots again and being in a very boulder strewn area and time getting on, we decided to back track.

Thankfully, we had a mobile phone with us with sat nav on it and we navigated our way back to the car park, although this did involve walking along the main road for a while. The only plus point to this was that we passed a garage and treated ourselves to an ice cream as consolation. It was disappointing but we still enjoyed the walk.

If there are detailed guides available for these trails I would strongly suggest not setting out without one, but don't let our experience put you off, the scenery is stunning, in general the walking is light and, if you don't lose your way (!), the distances are not too great.

Special Place

Great place to hike around and enjoy some beautiful rock formations . A photographic gem. Hiking around the lake is very enjoyable

Peavine Trail for an easy stroll.

By bbtraveler_11 |

We strolled along the peavine trail to the lake. It is an easy walk on a large path. Wish we had brought our bikes so that we could have expored further. We will definitely return.

Lovely

By annekeenan1 |

Have gone here many times. Its free on Wednesdays! You can bike around it, canoe/kayak/paddle board on it. Hike around it. It's a lovely setting. Very relaxing.

Spectacular views!

By thegoodlife28 |

It had rained and we were blessed to have it stop so that we could enjoy the area. It is really breath taking and gives you many opportunities to take nature photos. Good shoes are a must. The rock surfaces are uneven if you venture off the main trails. Also a good idea to have plenty of water. If you love hiking and nature, it is definitely worth seeing. We were there on a Wednesday.

Must Do/See when in Prescott - Unique Scenery

By Christopher K |

The scenery around the lake is unique. We did a hike around part of the lake and then back. The trails are very well marked and maintained. We could see people enjoying kayaking and paddle boarding. This is very peaceful place with amazing energy. We will be heading back to Prescott in July and look forward to doing some stand up paddle boarding.

The Lake is Full!

By Boomer |

The rains of 2019 have filled the lake to the top. It looks spectacular. An excellent lake for kayaking or fishing. Lots of picnic areas and many local hiking trails. Parking is inexpensive, but free on Wednesdays. A great place to take the family.

Love this trail!!!

By Nelly Z |

It may not be the easiest trail but it's so beautiful and definitely worth the trip to Prescott. There is no shade there so dont go on a hot day and bring with you a hat!

A bit low

By az2woodridge |

A family outing to the lake on a Monday. Still moderately busy. Spent 4-5 hours. enjoyed the area. Some of us spent time out on the lake. Unfortunately, the weather was hot for Prescott. the lake was low (unseasonably low). Overall- still a lovely area with the rock outcroppings and flora.

Unusual granite formations

By nighthawkriparian |

Unlike what other reviewers have said you cannot swim legally in Watson Lake. If you accidentally on purpose fall out of your canoe or kayak to use as a excuse to cool off you better make it look good because they keep a close eye on the lake and you could be fined and/or barred from coming back. The public lakes around Prescott supply drinking water all year round to Prescott and other small communities in the area. You can't swim in any of them legally this includes "wading." You can Kayak, canoe and fish there.

Nice family atmosphere

By Dawn R |

We stopped here and walked around the lake a bit, then had a picnic lunch, while waiting to check in at an Airbnb. They have clean restrooms, a playground for the kids, camping sites, and kayak rentals. It looked as though it would be a busy place in the spring and summer months with plenty to do for the family.

Great hike with a beautiful scenery

By zamdesserts |

Great place to hike with friends/family. Enjoy the outdoor and beautiful weather in Prescott, AZ. The hike is good for any skill levels.

We attended Dogtoberfest Adopt-A-Thon

By Patricia D |

It was a beautiful day in a peaceful and serene area with great vistas. They have kayaks and canoes for rent and lots of hiking over the rocks. Beautiful place - clean bathrooms (NOT port a potties), clean picnic areas, some with shade, and places for kids to play.

Just like in the photos

By J W |

I loved this hike. Shy was so blue and the water was the color of sapphires. We started at the boat ramp and did the granite dell side first. Challenging hike. Wear good shoes, take plenty of water and allow time to really enjoy the hike. Climbing up, over, and down the dells is work but so much fun. Scenery is breath taking. If you make it to the peavine trail it becomes much easier. Flat, well groomed. Now you can look out and see what you just hiked over.

Best "unknown" hiking ever

By NorCTDnL |

We saw a brief write-up about the Peavine trail at Watson. After an ankle sprain, I needed a flat, but nice walk. Peavine was fantastic, alongside the lake, and through the unbelievable granite dells. a 6 mile round trip. worth every step!

Hike a challenge but fun!

By Bonnie M |

We hiked all the way around the lake which is about 5 miles. Most of it is a pretty easy hike but the hike over the mountain area is definitely a challenge but not impossible. You need to be in shape to do it but it is rewarding! Very beautiful and scenic. Well marked trails (just follow the white dots). We would recommend this trail but not the mountain part if you are not prepared. Bring plenty of water and snacks.

Annual car show and swap meet

By Edward J G |

Every Summer there is a unique car show and swap meet unlike any other. The proximity of the lake, the trails and the variety of items for sale make this an unusually entertaining spectacle of wares. Many of the vendors are also fabricators. Custom auto work abounds and many connections can be made for refurbish work. Makes me want to but one last car! Entry fee was $5.00!

Too much dog poop

By Ellen D |

It is a beautiful setting but seems like it's not being taken care of. Maybe have more dog poop bag stations and trash cans. The ground is pretty gross.

Zen tastic

By stephen n |

I have kayaked many bodies of water and can truly say this was very unique experience the landscape inside and outside the lake spectacular words can’t describe

Beautiful scenery with unusuak rock formations.

By GMDesert |

A nicely maintained park with a beautiful lake in the center and unusual rock formations all around. Well marked trail provide hikes up to the rocks and around the lake. Well worth a few hours for easy hikes in beautiful scenery.

One of a kind!

By Sarah |

Unique, gorgeous place to kayak. Rentals or bring your own. $3 entry, cards accepted. Bathrooms on site. Nice lawn and shaded picnic tables with a view of the water. The Watson Lake Loop is a decently challenging hike. I recommend wandering the trail to the north of the boat ramp and enjoying the view from a bench up there, if you have adequate fitness to hike over a rocky boulder path. Then you can turn around or continue the loop if you want the challenge.

Beautiful

By Veronica C |

who would think something like this is in Arizona? The views are breath taking, the lake is HUGE. The rock formations are giant

Great Hike

By georgeg4 |

The Watson Lake Trail was great. At our age, it offered an unusual challenge but we were successful. The boulders have white dots that make it easy to follow.

Beauty - a 10

By ptrainer0920 |

Stunning views, disc golf, kakaying and walking trails. This is a must. Will be back to visit this area again.

Just Wow!!!

By Scruffybiker |

Just amazingly beautiful scenery!! Walked up the hill from the parking lot to see the rocks sticking straight up out of the water!!

Kayaking Watson Lake

By Lionhunter33 |

Had a great peaceful day out in the lake renting kayaks and exploring all the nooks and crannies of this unique area. Great wildlife here too. The guys at the Hassayampa Hotel where we stayed this weekend recommended this, and we’re glad they did!

Outdoor Wedding in February was amazing!!!

By John_Janine W |

My youngest brother and his finace held their wedding there and it was beautiful!!! I loved the background of the Lake!!

Beautiful view

By traveltowisconsin |

Beautiful view, see in the early morning on a sunny day for great photo's. We were very glad that we went around 8:00 am for amazing light and photo's.

Beautiful water surrounded by boulders

By Laura P |

Such a special retreat - good parking, inexpensive admission and many secluded places to hike or sit. Lovely! desert oasis.

Watson Lake

By MICHAEL H |

I love walking the dogs around Watson Lake, which is right next to the riparian area in Prescott Arizona. It is absolutely beautiful, granite rocks, lots of Wildlife which include geese, ducks, heron, bald eagles, red-winged blackbirds, and javelina. The granite Dells in Prescott Arizona are absolutely gorgeous and unusual. I highly recommended any time of year!

Beautiful rock formations

By Buckshot5255 |

The rock formations on the north side are spectacular. There is vey little shade so it is best visited early or late, but worth the $3 admission.

Wedding party

By 10grandmaR |

We really enjoyed this venue to celebrate the wedding of our son and his bride at such a beautiful and unique place.

Amazing views!!

By jswhit |

So glad we stopped to check it out...totally worth the $3 entry fee. We spent about an hour or so just walking the trails, climbing the rocks, and enjoying the amazing views. Definite must do if in the area!! Our 15 year old loved it as much as our 8 year old.

Pretty

By lindakerr8 |

Heard so much but was disappointing....only a couple of roads into lake but can't drive around! Great lake for water sports, not so good if you just want to drive around

Nice lake but beware of the trail around lake

By sactokw |

It’s a beautiful lake with the rock formations. I parked free along the road lookout on Route 69 and walked down to the lake. The Watson lake trail around the lake is not well marked so beware as it’s easy to get lost on the trail. A ?5 mile hike around the lake can easily take >1.5 hours due to getting lost frequently. Trail needs better marking; otherwise very enjoyable.

Beautiful views!!

By MarciaRI |

Beautiful views, clean, restroom facilities
There are some picnic tables. There are walking trails around the lake, unfortunately it was a little too hot in the sun yesterday July 4th to go walking very far. But we did sit down on a nice bench in the shade and took in all the beautiful scenery.
We will go back most likely in the fall and take a nice long trail walk, to get the full experience of Watson Lake.
Wear comfortable walking shoes or sneakers
Enjoy!

lovely lake scenery, but trails not always marked

By elderlyones |

but trails not always marked and map is not too helpful
also, got $50 parking ticket for not paying at "kiosk" - entry gate was closed and "kiosk" was a machine on the side of the restroom

RIGHT IN TOWN

By cam l |

Of the magical lakes within a stones throw of Prescott CBD this may be the Jewel in the Crown. Wide range of recreational facilities, have a rugby match on the expansive lawn area, picnic at the lake, play Frisbee Golf, kayak, fish and paddleboard all with a majestic background of the granite rock formations.

BREATHTAKING!!!!

By Hot-Tati |

i Love it here. well worth the long drive from Phoenix. We arrived later in the afternoon. Lots of parking considering the covid restrictions on several areas. This is an amazing site to experience. We did a portion of the hike, our goal is to come up and do the entire loop next time. The textures and variety of scenery is awe inspiring. We came for a photogrpahy shoot that ended up cancelling due to the weather, BUT we got a great hike in and some great images of the landscape. Highly recommended stop even if just for a picnic. $12.oo for a day pass. No camping overnight currently Can bring own boat. Lots of great photo ops

Great Rock Formations

By Ishpudejko |

My wife and I went hiking one day around the rim of the lake and the next day went kayaking. We paddled from one end to the other and saw many wonderful rock formations and various types of birds. Kayaks can be rented at the boat launch area. Staff was very helpful and accommodating. A great way to spend a morning.

Through the vortex

By Paul S |

Watson Lake and the uniquely etched granite of the Prescott Dells is an incredible sight right off hwy 89. Depending on the time you have, you can see it from the road, from a scenic overlook, or stop in at the park to picnic, hike, or actually get out on the water. It's hard to believe that you are only 90 minutes from the sprawl of Phoenix. In fact, It is so different from almost anywhere else in Arizona its hard to believe you didn't accidentally drive through one of those so-called vortexes and wind up in a different state, country, or even galaxy. A definite must see if you are in Prescott and worth the detour if you are on the way to Flag or Phoenix.

Fun at the Lake

By Juanita Torres |

This lake is so beautiful and calming. My boyfriend and I wanted to have a little getaway, we rented a cabin on Friday 08-23-2019, we came to Watson Lake on the 24th. The people are nice and the water temperature was not cold but definitely not warm, it was perfect. They have kayak rentals for a single it’s $15 an hour and a double is $20-25 to be honest I’m am not too sure which price it was. They rent other things such as prattle boards and little boats, unfortunately we did not get one so I can not provide a price. They do allow pets and fishing but unfortunately no swimming. My boyfriend and I spent 2 1/2 hours on the lake in our single kayaks you pay for the first hour and if you go over you pay at the end. Such a wonderful relaxing area. We will definitely be back for more.

Beautiful Landscape!

By Phyllis10 |

We did a little hiking around the lake. Spent most of the time taking pictures. It is absolutely beautiful and so unique! The water level was a little low when we were there, we didn't get to kayak, maybe next time!

Lake in the desert

By Richard H |

Driving along, and all of a sudden, here is this gorgeous lake! Is a spot to pull into and park, trails to walk if you choose. Least there were when I was there.

One of the best sites in Prescott!

By Marisa O |

Watson Lake is one of the must-see spots in Prescott. It’s great for a stroll, camping, a picnic or just taking photos. It can get crowded during the summer and holidays. It’s wonderful how it changes with the seasons. IMO, fall is the best time to visit.

Gorgeous! Best lake I've ever seen

By Steve H |

This lake is unique with the gorgeous granite dells. 4.5 mile hike around the lake. So crazy awesome for hiking, bouldering, enjoying the cooler temps (20 degrees cooler than Phoenix). Reminds me of Vermont and just over an hour north of Phoenix.

A wonderful natural and recreational treasure

By Eaglesinflight |

Watson Lake and the Granite Dells are amazing man made and geological attractions. Beautiful and amazing views, great places to kayak and hike, and very quiet given their proximity to Prescott.
We are camping at the Point of Rocks RV Campground, which is adjacent to the Granite Dells. Everything is so convenient to town as well as to a multitude of hiking and biking trails.
Well worth a visit.

Great Views!

By Jelias A |

This is a great stop if you’re visiting with your family or friends! Very cool views of a bunch of interesting rock formations and great picture opportunities!

Kayaking Watson Lake, Prescott Arizona

By Jodeen S |

A group of older women reserved a time online for early morning, meriting a nice discount. Cody was there to get us setup with life vests and kayaks. The service was great! (And he's handsome!) A good demonstration for novices and help getting in and out of the kayak! Watson Lake is beautiful, surrounded by granite dells. Pretty and interesting formations, very relaxing and rowing is easy, well worth going and doing!

Beautiful!

By Sandy S |

Beautiful spot for a walk/hike for varied abilities. There were boulders for some climbing. A small golf disk course. Or just a destination for a ride to visit for some beautiful scenery Watson Lake is a great.

Outstanding Rock Formations

By PhilS85622 |

This lake offers a stark but beautiful shoreline. Very crowded on weekends. There is a loop trail around the lake perimeter.

Fell in love with the Lakes in Prescott

By Moneen Louise |

We spent 4 glorious nights in Prescott - We explored all 4 Lakes! Watson, Willow, Goldwater and Lynx….My favorite was Watson Lake right in the Granite Dell, huge bolders all around, like the Flintstones… Excellent area for viewing and walking, lots of picnic tables and cabana’s. But the actual geography is a sight to behold. Lynx Lake also fantastic, tree’s surround approx 3 mile walk, all around the Lake, great trail to walk, boating, lots of canoeing in both area’s and a birders paradise…..⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Scenic beauty but the Watson Lake Loop Trail is tough!

By Vacation257112 |

Watson Lake is a scenic gem not far from historic Prescott. The lake is stunningly beautiful, surrounded by rounded rock formations. We decided to hike the Watson Lake Loop Trail as it was reviewed as moderate by most hikers. Beware: it is truly a technically challenging hike through many parts of the rocks. You follow white spray-painted dots to guide you through the Trail. A walking stick and hiking boots are mandatory. Scenery is lovely but if you are not prepared for a tough hike, you’ll spend much of your time watching the Trail instead of appreciating your surroundings.

Beautiful!

By biker53x |

Watson Lake/The Granite Dells is a Prescott main-attraction. The lake & rocks are beautiful. Less than 10 miles from downtown Prescott it's a must-see for travelers. You can camp nearby at the Point of Rocks campground. Parking is plentiful & only $3.00 (free on Wednesdays). Although swimming is not allowed boating & fishing are. I'm a professional photographer & cinematographer & I've shot music videos here, landscape photos, portraits & engagement photos. As of August 2019 Watson Lake is threatened with housing development. I hope this does not happen because it will take a beautiful & unique place a way from the general public. See it while you can!

Beautiful place

By lotsagoldens |

We were here in the afternoon so it was quite windy. If we go again, we'll get there in the morning. Plenty of people were kayaking anyway. The scenery is beautiful. There are campsites, bathrooms, and picnic areas.

Small but beautiful

By Sharon O |

Watson is a beautiful lake but only for "looking". It's difficult to use the lake for water activities as it is over taken by underwater grasses. Swimming is too dangerous because of the possibility of getting tangles, so paddle boarding is also dangerous in case you fall off. Motors or oars get hung up on weeds also. The lake needs to be dredged to get rid of underwater growth. Beautiful though!!!

A Beautiful Lake

By John V |

Beautiful lake with hiking trails, picnic spots and a boat ramp, lots of spots to go rock climbing. A great place to hang out.

By BuenViaje68 |

This little lake is a gem. It is such a nice recreation area. They don’t allow motorized boats, just kayaks and paddle-boards. There are all sorts of slots canyons to float into and explore. There are also tons of hiking trails around the lake to hike or even mountain bike. We did a loop hike around the lake. We made a few diversions and ended up hiking around 7 miles. If you simply do the loop it’s about 4.8 miles. You will be hiking over granite rocks where it’s hard to see the trail, so they have painted whit dots along the way to help keep you on the trails and from getting lost. This was a great way to speak half a day, you could make an entire day of hanging out at Watson Lake.

Great place for a hike and to relax

By Mountainman827 |

Did the 5 mile hike that circled the lake not east but fun walking thru all the rocks. If you are not a hiker just visit to enjoy the beauty of the area.

Scenic Park Worth The Visit

By Rankbronc |

We visited the Watson Lake Park to see what it has to offer. The park fee is a self service kiosk $3 and at the top of the road from the entrenched is parking providing views of the lake. The lake at the Dam end is surrounded by pretty rock formations. The is an i testing trail through the rocks which has you follow the white dots painted on the rocks to keep you safely on course. There is also a frisbee disc course nested along the rocks over looking the lake that we will have to try next time.
Over all a very nice park to visit while in Prescott!

Beautiful Lake

By Darla A |

Watson Lake is a must do on your trip to Prescott. It offers stunning views of the lake and rocky landscape. We highly recommend viewing it via kayak as well as hiking around the lake. Just beware that is you hike the Watson Lake hike you only see the lake at the beginning and end of the hike. The majority of the hike is navigating over boulders.

Pretty

By AdventuresofNomNom |

This lake is so pretty with unique rock formations piercing the water. Several walking trail options and viewpoints. There is a fee for entering via car.

Great place for fishing

By Hannahbears_mom |

Stopped for a bit of fishing. While the odds weren't in our favor that day, I cannot wait to come back and try our luck again!

Spectacular views in the Dells & great hiking

By dkelch |

A variety of hiking trails around the lake with great views of the Dells that are 1.7 billion year old granite. Unique formations & you can fish the lake.

Well Worth the Drive!

By RIAlba |

Easy to get to and enjoy. Lovely place. Just like the photos shown. Scenic. Great place to take a photo for a Christmas card!

Beautiful but polluted

By 4leglover |

Saw the lake and commented on how beautiful it was but a local standing there told me it was so polluted swimming was not allowed. Shame.

Wish we had known!

By FlymanOutdoors |

We got some information about how beautiful Watson lake was, so I took my family with two small children to the main attraction “the water”, to find out afterwards about how polluted it was. There is a charge for visiting, only three dollars, but if it is as polluted as stated it should be closed! It’s truly a beautiful place, but access to the water should not be allowed, neither should there be a charge. Shame on the authorities for misleading people into visiting such a foul cesspool.

Great day trip!

By Melanie H |

A beautiful lake! We did a quick stop there just to enjoy our lunch and check out the view...which is so cool. Those rounded rocks were so cool and not terribly hard to climb. We took a few trails and made a few of our own. Had nice options that we didn't have time for...like kayaking!!

Take some time to enjoy the views

By Ralph P |

Make sure that you drive to both boat launch areas and walk around. The rock formations are spectacular. Access is easy. Unfortunately water is polluted-stay out

A gem!!

By agr8scot |

Super walks for the whole family. Ideal for pick nicks and strolling around. Fabulous and breathtaking views.

Great hike

By Dee D |

Start at the boat launch and hike CCW. It’s helpful to have a trail map as there are numerous intersect trails. Fairly well marked with ‘dots’ and trail names. When you come to the end of the rocky part it’s pretty flat and boring. We turned around and hiked back. Good workout.

Stunning!

By Cinderbug |

A very beautiful lake with stunning views all around. Great hiking trails. Canoe and Kayak rental. We were on a short day trip but look forward to going back so we can be on the lake, not just on a trail looking at it.

New Favorite Place in AZ!

By Sentimental Nomad |

Finding this place was an unplanned happy accident! I mean WOW! This lake is just spectacular!! Gorgeous water & rock formations. Just mesmerizing! Such a cool place to explore! I also really enjoyed climbing all of the rocks- Really fun! You can kayak in this area also. It’s in a larger park, & you have to pay $3 to enter, but it’s totally worth it. The park itself is nice as well. Watson Lake was one of my favorite spots while in Arizona... a real hidden gem!

follow the bouncing white ball

By wannago2 |

Lovely "city" park with a great hiking trail and it seems like lots of other bike trails that come and go in and out too. Fortunately they have marked the trail with white spray paint dots. Good thing because even with the dots we couldn't always stay on the trail.

Mile high lake

By sallyjn |

Really enjoyed the hike around the lake experiencing rocks, meadows, trees and plenty of wildflowers. Going clockwise from parking area, it doesn’t start out easy. First couple of miles there’s a lot of clambering over boulders but takes you through some interesting vegetation. Take plenty of water and wear good shoes. Well worth the $3 entry fee.

Great open air getaway

By Maggie E |

Great place to experience nature, and enjoy some fresh air. After being stuck at home for two months this was a great way to get out and still keep my distance.

Missing coat at Watson Lake

By cccanada |

Was at the Granite Dells at Watson Lake January 3rd-started hike at the boat launch and went towards the dam. Got caught up in the scenery and left my favourite gray coat on the rocks on the trail. If anyone happens to find it -I will gladly pay to have it shipped home. Cheri@hotmail.ca Thank you!

Unbelievable View

By chonrey |

We've come to Prescott for the last 5 years and each time we visit Watson Lake with the family. Walk the trails or just sit atop a boulder and relax as we look at this amazing view. We were fortunate to bring lots of family this last visit. It's even more amazing after it snows. I highly recommend a visit.

Disc golf

By Mountainstormer |

Came over from Sedona because I read that they now have 18 holes. 3 dollar admission to the park isn't horrible, its actually "per car" so grab a couple of friends and its a buck a person. The course is awesome. There are elevate baskets, elevated tee pads, a couple of uphill throws. I wouldn't say any of the holes are technical or hard. In the beginning there are some amazing holes where you throw across little washes while overlooking the lake. Easily one on the most beautiful courses I've ever thrown. The back 9 (which I think is the original 9) puts you out in the open for the most part and is less scenic. The first time we played here the lady at the entrance said wind is usually an issue. It was beautiful that first day. Second time there we tried to get there a little early to avoid wind. That didn't work. I think it was 8:30 and the wind was blowing pretty hard already. The course plays through a granite boulders that will chew your discs up. I showed up with a new condor and my better half with 3 new discs. By the time we finished they looked like we had owned them for a year. Almost forgot, it seems like people lose discs there. Watch where they go. In the two times we have been there we found 6 discs and lost 1. Its nice though because I got a call on my disc which never happens in cottonwood. You lose a disc in cottonwood say goodbye to it because nobody will call you.

The park itself I can't say much about. It looks like a really nice place to go hike or picnic. I think they have camping. You can bring a kayak or SUP and cruise around a gorgeous lake. There is fishing. It looks like a fantastic local park that we would go to a lot if we lived near there.

Amazing Little Lake

By beverly1160 |

Watson Lake is a sweet little lake, beautiful granite boulders, hiking and they rent Kayaks in the summer. Beautiful area.

Local lake to us, we love it!

By Hillary H |

This is the largest of the 3 nearby lakes (within 15 mins) of us. Much bigger than Lynx Lake, there is also Goldwater and Willow (Willow is quite close to Watson.) I love this lake cause it just stunningly beautiful. It's pretty big (it you paddled all around from the edges it would take you like 3 hours) and so there is a lot of different areas to check out and explore. NO swimming is allowed, but the boating is what I want anyway. We take our Kayaks out here all the time and it's so nice and peaceful. There can be a lot of other folks on the lake and you would hardly know they were there. For those in your party not into water, there is a nice hiking trail that gives some just amazing views. All sorts of bird life (including a couple of bald eagles) are around. The north boat ramp is a prettier place to get in, but the south is a bit easier entry. Be aware that the wind pick up many afternoons and this time of year (late June) we get monsoon rains. Both can make the return to shore a bit tricky. I would strongly suggest early mornings in the summertime.

The area is beautiful and clean. The walking trails are easy to find and follow. And the memorial benches are a great idea.

Must see

By Bkbak |

This is a must see if you are in the area. It's such an unusual reservoir as it has so many unusual boulders lining it. There were quite a few visiting Canadian geese which were fun to watch.

Gorgeous!

By janedoe32 |

One of the most beautiful lakes I have seen! I love to do outdoor photography and this is an excellent place for that. I will definitely go back next time I visit Prescott.

Stunning surroundings but went when it was a little too hot.

By laura d |

I have gone to this lake twice and the first time was awesome. I got right by the boat landing and ate some lunch, next I tried to take a trail but it just got to difficult for me. It was amazing tho, absolutely stunning and as a new photographer, I gotta say, one of my best shots was taken here! Definitely not your average looking lake!

Great lake for kayaking

By RTKDMD |

The rock formations around the lake are famous for good reason. They are mesmerizing and surreal. Paddle around the lake to get myriad views and different perspectives. Bring a fishing rod, too.

Breathtaking views - fabulous hiking

By Robin L |

Took our Phoenix friends hiking all around the lake - 2 1/2 hours round trip and most of it was pretty challenging. We all LOVED it. Bring plenty of water and walking sticks.

Leaving the bike path is difficult hiking

By Peggy A |

It is a beautiful lake with unusual rock formations and well kept public facilities such as restrooms and picnic areas. We left the easy to walk 'bike path' to hike through the rocks after reading the sign regarding the path becoming more difficult. This is a huge understatement and we felt was a bit misleading. It is definitely a hike for 'advanced' skills. We had to find out way back to the bike path to get back to the car. Be prepared if you hop off the bike path!

Watson Lake is cool.

By DogDoggie |

Enjoyed the views and a quick hike at Watson Lake Park. It a beautiful area with easy access from Prescott (approximately 5 miles).

Beautiful year round

One of my favorite parts of Prescott, it is just breathtaking. It changes colors seasonally in parts and a great place to Kayak

Watson Lake is a must see. One of God's wonders. So very close there is no excuse to not drive on over!

What a wonderful surprise!

By Chris D |

We were in town visiting a relative at the V.A. hospital with a little spare time. We were just wowed with the beauty of this lake. We hiked and climbed on the boulders, the views are simply breathtaking. On our next trip here we're planning to go kayaking and picnicing and making a day of it. Can't wait to come back!

Very Nice Walking area

By mgtnjm |

The is a very nice area for a walk. You could spend an hour or several hours walking around. I would recommend good shoes, some places are narrow and uneven. There are several parking areas.

Hike around Watson Lake

By LNE44 |

This is a fabulous hike that takes about 2 to 3 hours based on how much stopping and picture taking you decide to do. The trails themselves are visibly marked with a white dot so you can follow as you hike over the rocks on half of the trail. The other part of the trail is around the lake and not much climbing but nice Prairie Like scenery. There’s an amazing amount of birds green herons, Hawks & ducks to enjoy.

Must Do/See when in Prescott - Unique Scenery

By Chris K |

Amazing and unique views all around the lake. We did some hiking and the trails were well marked and maintained. They were mostly in direct sun with some shade down in the canyon below the damn. We could see others enjoy some kayaking and paddle boarding. We'll be back in a coupe months and will be taking the paddle boards.

Beautiful place but not the water!

By Amy B |

Watson on Saturday. Beautiful scenery, but the water is DISGUSTING!! Will never paddle there again!! Didn't want to step foot in the water and not to mention the fresh water weeds you can barely get through from the launch. On the coast was nothing but duck and geese poo everywhere!! It is a no swimming lake for good reason and no place to get out or places to get back on your kayak or SUP if you tip or fall off. Nope! The water is grossly green and murky, yuck!! I'd hike here but never paddle again! I have no pics to support my negative, but trust me on my review! They do have a nice bathroom in the parking lot, clean.

Beautiful on COOL days

By Jack P |

Hooked up with kayak rentals from Maryah at Born to be Wild Adventures for a late morning cruise on the lake. She'll make sure there's kayaks there and you just leave them and go when you're done. The longer you paddle the better the value for the daily rates. If it weren't for the 90 degree temps it would have been a lot more enjoyable. It's a beautiful lake but was filled with green algae (this was mid September) especially at the launch ramp where it seems to concentrate, maybe due to the direction of the winds. High summer temps and lack of rainfall may have contributed. Others on the lake enjoyed and soaked up the sun, but it was too much for us. Would suggest going out on a day where the temps are no higher than 85. Wednesdays are also preferred for the free parking. Any other day you'll have to pay that fee also.

Scenic Setting

By Scott B |

Many hiking trails around the lake and thru the Granite Dells. Kayak rentals are available and there is plenty of parking.

Watson Lake is really Pretty

By Violette54 |

We enjoyed a brief stop at the overlook area above Watson Lake. There are several trails that take off from there and we walked a short distance. It is possible to hike around the entire lake. On a clear day, one can see the San Francisco Peaks about 50 miles to the north. Good hiking shoes are necessary if you want to climb around on the rocks.
There is plenty of parking, but there is a Day Use fee of $3 for the picnic facilities. There are two boat ramps and a separate area for handicap access to the water.
And a place where dogs can be off their leash.
This is a great place for family events with playgrounds and large fields for games.
The swans will bite.

Worth a walk!

By huberschweiz |

At a cool 15 degrees we took a short hike along Watson Lake. Very romantic, very bizarre rock formations, very quiet.

Fantastic hike

Started at the boat ramp and went left on the white dot trail. Great trail through magnificent boulders.

Simply beautiful!

By jvptravels |

We recently stopped by this gem on a day trip to Prescott, Arizona. The park has picnic areas, restrooms, hiking trails and a boat launch for canoes and kayaks (rent one or bring your own). The lake with all of the beautiful red-ish boulders is breathtaking. The hike along the marked trail is a little bit rugged, but well worth the effort. We spent a couple hours here. You can easily spend a full day at the park, enjoyng the lake. There is no swimming or motor boating. The parking fee is just $3 per vehicle, and free parking is offered on Wednesdays. Historic downtown Prescott is just a few miles away, and well worth a visit.

A Great Spot with Multiple Options for Recreation or Just Sitting Enjoying the View

By TheBoujCrew |

What a pleasant surprise! We visited here during a mother daughter trip. My mom likes to get out and explore but hates hiking. So, I convinced her to go and just checkout the lake and it kept her entertained for a good hour, which is tough to do LOL.

There are many picnic tables, barbecue grills and more. I was surprised to see 2 boat launches, kayak rentals, restrooms, horseshoe pits and more! This place is DEFINITELY large, so I would do your research ahead of time on where you want to go as once inside, if you don't really know where you're going, you might be driving around a bit!

AMAZING AMAZING!

By ruby |

We drove in not knowing what to expect. The hiking and views were truly exceptional! You can hike for a long or as short as you are up to. Wear good shoes. We did see a few kayaks but did not rent them. Good toilet facilities.

Awesome Park!

Rock climbing, kayaking, hiking in one pretty little package

By Oscar N Barbara Z |

We visit Watson Lake often for opportunities to rock climb, kayak, and hike. It is so easily accessible. Small enough to get around quickly, but big on views and fun! Great place to spend the day.

Fun hike!

By Katie K |

Really enjoyed our hike at Watson’s Lake! So fun to climb on the dells and it was very quiet and relaxing. Would recommend if you’re in the area! Remember to bring some cash for the entrance fee. Very worth it though!

A Must See

By MBN |

What a beautiful lake! We went for a short hike and were so surprised by the rock formations and spectacular view. We didn’t have time to go boating but it looked like it would be peaceful and beautiful to go canoeing or kayaking there. People were also fishing from the shoreline, others just basking in the sun or picnicking at picnic tables. Oh -just be aware of the disc golf course-we heard the yell of a “heads up” once or twice while walking the trails.

Beautiful hiking around the lake

By Patricia C |

Can be warm in the summer, go early. The south end of the lake is shaded and more flat. The north side is more technical and boulder areas. Beautiful and peaceful with benches scattered around the trails. Canoes and kayaks are allowed on the lake.

Amazing!

When my wife suggested we stop, I was skeptical. My mistake. We were all amazed at the site. It is such a beautiful, unique and peaceful place. I would highly recommend stopping.

Very cool

By Courtney P |

We stopped by on the way out of town. It’s not too big but it is mesmerizing. The rocks( boulders ). I guess you could say, they are just so cool and the color is just way different than everywhere else in that area.

Beautiful Rock Formation

By lmarciniuk |

Watson Lake is a beautiful lake to spend an afternoon hiking or just sitting on a rock and taking in the beautiful view.

Watson wreck

By kathryn b |

Located immediately off the main drag, accessible to the retired residents and their RC sailboats- the only watercraft witnessed, although there is a launch. The water level was critically low, which I think contributed to the swarms of buzzing insects along the trail that we tried. Red-winged blackbirds remind you that this area should have more water and more trees available as habitat- just not on our visit.

This place is stunning! What an excellent hike around the lake! Lots of boulder scrambling

By Heather T |

We hadn't planned to hike the entire way around, but that's what we did. It was a blast, lots of ups and downs, boulder scrambling, super fun! The hike is not for people with physical limitations, however, it's easy to pull in, park and enjoy the lake from the boat ramp area. There were geese and ducks swimming around and this place is just stunningly beautiful!

Watson Lake

Went on a few short hikes down of the water and back climb on the Rocks a little bit. It was absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful day very few people were there. I would advise this for anyone.

This place is beautiful and the Dells with the water can give really nice background for pictures. It can get really hot, we visited here on a month of April but I can still feel the heat eventhough its 80°(im from tucson so 80 chilly to me 😄) so bring protection from the sun and lots water..

I have lived in Prescott for over a decade and truly love this lake. We have used it for kayaking, stand up paddle boards, sailing, photo shoots, and countless hikes. No visit to Prescott should skip this Yavapai landmark.

Get your heart pumping!

By 904bkel |

We did the 4+ mile Watson Loop Trail, on a cool-ish sunny day. Go counterclockwise if you want to do the more strenuous part of the hike first. AllTrails calls this moderate, but I would consider it on the more strenuous end of spectrum. Got out of the car, and was swarmed by bugs, but started walking briskly & they abated somewhat, as we made our way around the lake. Follow the white dots to stay on the trail, as there are many spurs & offshoots. I felt silly carrying my hiking poles at first, but there was enough scrambling over boulders & elevation changes, that I was glad I brought them. The trail finishes on the Peavine bike/hike/walking path, which was nice, because it was level at the end, with a bit of shade. Entrance to the park is $3, but supposedly free on Wednesdays. We parked at a small lot off 89A, and began the hike a little bit west (?) of the boat ramp & entrance, so we didn’t pay the fee anyway. Take lots of water & some snacks—there are plenty of places to cop a squat along the way.

Great place for a variety of activities close to town.

By Robert S |

Watson Lake is open year round for hiking, canoeing, other boating, fishing, kayaking and having picnics. Very crowded on summer weekends. Cost is $6 per vehicle per day except Wednesdays, which are free. Best of all, it's within the Prescott city limits. Swimming in the summer is okay if the water is fairly high, but the temp is relatively cold and there are no sandy beaches.

Walking tour

By ephraimmassey |

Nice views and the rocky path is well marked. Almost no one was there. A boat launch is available. It looks ideal for canoeing or kayaking. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout. One could spend a few hours or most of a day here.

Save your money and drive along the road for best view

By Sweetsforall |

Don’t mine donating to the parks but I could have just threw my 3 bucks out the window driving by
Unattended money ticket machine with no map or way to find the best place to see the lake or find a view
Just follow the willow creek road to see the water

Beautiful granite bolder's surround this lake on the north end. Rent a small boat or take a hike on a trail surrounding the water. The lake fluctuates based on rainfall but is always scenic. Picnic tables and camping are available.

Scenic Hike

By baseballmom2012 |

Nice, easy, scenic hike once you get past the industrial area. Pretty views and benches to rest. Not too many people on the trail midweek.

Beautiful Area

By JDLipps |

My wife and I, and our daughter and her husband, visited Watson Lake and did the Loop Trail including the Over The Hill part. Amazing scenery, and pretty good workout, especially the first 1-1/2 hours from the north boat launch going clockwise.

I’d really encourage hiking boots and sticks for this (which we thankfully had). Not a lot of total elevation gain, but it was a lot of up & down over rocks and slick rock. The trail could be marked better as well. Definitely follow the small white paint dots located here and there along the trail. It would be helpful if there was better signage indicating when one trail was joining or departing from another.

All in all it was a very pleasant time.

Don't Miss This

By Travelinggirl |

Very unique park. Wear ankle supportive shoes when walking around on the big boulders. You can explore to your hearts content.

Beautiful area

By Laura G |

We went with my older dog and my friends 1 year old pup. The area is beautiful and the section of the trail we walked (about 2 miles each way for 4 miles total) was well groomed and easy. There is an opportunity for a boulder scramble too.

Rock hopping

By Wrldtraveler |

We explored twice while staying at Point of Rocks Campground. The water in Watson Lake is not good for dogs, algae and very stinky. Not sure I would even paddle there. Hiking is great though. So convenient from the campground.

Beautiful!

We were told second most photographed place in AZ next to the Grand Canyon- worth the stop. Very pretty. Rocks.

Inflatable Boat Adventure

By Gwen C |

This Lake is relatively small and primarily used for kayaking and fishing. It has areas for horse shoes, bocce ball, frisbee golf, grassy areas, picnic tables and camping, don’t think there are any hook ups. There’s also a 5 mile trail around the lake that we’ll do next time.
This trip was on the water fun! My husband and I brought our 10’ inflatable boat to go out to the beautiful granite boulders and explore the lake. There are always a lot of kayaks on the lake on weekends, many people have their own or you can rent them...we have the boat.
The Lake is $3.00 per day use, pay at a kiosk. (Wednesday’s are free) $15.00 per night to camp. There are 2 boat launches and a pier.
Our boat has a trolling motor that we thought would be perfect to be able to take our time and leisurely explore the lake and granite boulder areas...no such luck... the lake is thick with lake grass that made using the trolling motor impossible. We rowed instead but decided that kayaks are the perfect mode of transportation on this lake because they sit higher in the water and glide across the surface...the kayakers made pretty good time compared to our boat with oars.
The granite boulders are so unusual and so beautiful.
It was a Thursday morning and there were only 2 other kayakers on the lake at 9:30am to 11:30am. We would have stayed out longer but a monsoon headed our way with thunder, lightening and rain so we rowed as fast as we could to the pier and made it out just before the down pour...something to keep in mind during the summer months in Prescott.
We’ll be going back soon to rent a kayak 😃

Good walking.

gorgeous. this initial view of the lake is the normal lake view until you turn the corner, phenomenal. I am not a nature guy unless if offers exceptional views, this area offers such. I did not kayak, which I regret but walked/hiked the area, it was wonderful. I did view many parents w/ children, adults and etc kayak the lake and I was envy. the initial view of the lake is a normal lake until you turn the corner, the view is exceptional. I viewed folks kayak between rocks, it was so cool. Viewed many parents w/ their young children kayak the lake, the kids were thrilled. Oh, kids from 5 to 17. Also viewed couples kayak the lake. Many hiked the trails but please, wear tennis shoes or better, you may climb rocks that offer a wonderful view. Yes, many played Frisbee golf and the course is ridiculously difficult but an incredible walk.

Hidden gem within the city

By WanderingWithUsTwo |

Prescott is a small town a little less than two hours from Phoenix. Since it is at higher elevation it is usually much colder and even gets snow during winter. It is mainly known for the university, Embry Riddle, which is located here. It’s a great small town with a historic downtown district great for walking through. This particular lake is located just north of Prescott and is right off of the local highway. During summer months they offer camping and have year around access for all other activities. If you just plan on visiting for the day they require $3 all day parking that you pay as you enter. Since it is a city park all discounted rates for national holidays that parks service offers do no apply here. There are several marked trails that take you around the lake but there’s also many areas to explore on your own off the path. We will be making a trip back during the summer months to experience camping here as well!

Very close to downtown Prescott. Huge boulders surround this lake. Some of the area is easy to climb on rocks. Very unique lake because of the formations.

Very relaxing

By solem8s |

We have been to Watson Lake quite a few times over the years. It is very relaxing there. Plenty of trees and grass. It's nice to just be near water. The park attendants are always nice and friendly. There is some camping areas, but we never used them. There are plenty of clean restrooms around the park.

Amazing Kayak Adventure

By 1bowers |

i finally kayaked at Watson Lake, it was amazing! The most unusual scenery and rock formations. its a photograpers dream! i rented the kayak through Prescott Outdoors Adventure Rentals which is located at the south end of the lake. Very reasonably priced and most helpful. While its a short drive from the valley it makes for the perfect day trip.

VERY PICTURESQUE

By Warner L |

I was expecting a stroll around the lake with wrong boots. The stroll came close to rock climbing - not full bore but getting close. It was a pleasure seeing this with the excellent lighting of 0630 in the morning. Iwas graced with several gray herons. GREAT FOR PHOTOS. Take the right boots!

A Different World Set in The Granite Dells

By Tom B |

This park offers a lot-camping, day use area, Boccie courts, Horseshoe pits, hiking the many trails around the lake and Kayak rentals. Paddling on this lake makes you feel like you are on a different world with all the different and strange rock formations the Granite Dells provide. Scenery is just spectacular. Plenty of bird life can be seen, we were able to view a Crane nabbing a fish from the waters edge. The park is well cared for and clean. A small day use fee is required and is good all day and including their other parks in the valley. Plenty of options for the whole family.

Kayak and hike around Watson Lake

By Ben S |

My wife and I rented a kayak that sits two people for $25 for one hour, and kayaked around Watson Lake. The kayaking was easy and the huge boulders around the lake were great to look at. They charge $15 for additional hours of kayak rental, and they also rent single kayaks and canoes. Then we walked next to and above the lake for great views. What an enjoyable two hours.

A tiny piece of the Grand Canyon...with a lake.

By Alan Foster |

Beautiful and easily accessible lake with spectacular granite backdrops. Kayaking and canoeing, hiking trails, and views. Lake (and nearby Willow Lake) are major waterfowl stop-over points...you can occasionally spot a bald eagle or two. As of the first of March, 2019, both lakes are currently full to the brim.

Incredible rock formations

By Marilyn M |

You really cannot see much from the road so you need to pay the $3 entrance fee, which is good for the day at all local lakes. Be sure to bring a hat or visor and sunglasses as there is virtually zero shade. The views are pretty spectacular. There are no hiking trails that we saw. Not conducive for getting around if disabled (in a wheelchair, rollator, walker).

Great lake in Prescott

Beautiful lake. Clean, well marked hiking trails, pet friendly. North end has the huge granite dells. Picnic areas and camping areas. Whole park seems well maintained.

Days of hiking and kayaking

By Kathie M |

Our first jaunt to the lake was a hike and recon mission. It costs $3.00/car and the hike was cleared paths and rocks. We went back on Wednesday which is free day at all of the lakes and kayaked, tandem $20 /hour. We were out 2hours which was plenty of time to explore,. Outfitter only takes cards.

worth a stop

By jfd |

Even if you don't hike this is worth a stop to see the huge rock formations and the water. Unfortunately the water level is pretty low having been a very dry year but the site is still impressive. Bring water if you are going on a hike.

What a beautiful place to relax

Beautiful hiking trail and amazing bird watching opportunities. Great scenery. Our hike (watson lake loop) took roughly about 2.5 hours. Worth every minute!

Great Day Trip Area near Prescott - Phoenix

By L_Schafer_426 |

Watson Lake is a relatively small lake, nestled in the Prescott Dells. It's a very pleasant area to Hike around or just sit near the Lake and Watch. The day we were there we saw bright green algae, which is unusual but made the view spectacular. Each season ans each day is a bit different.

Great little lake for kayaking, hiking, photography, and birdwatching (saw several cormorants). Very scenic!

didn't want to leave

By kbyarlay |

This lake was amazing. The granite dells sticking out the water were fascinating and added so much interest to the lake. The hike around the lake starting at the granite dells was so fun because the hike is all up and over the granite rock by following white dots for trail markers. Such a fun and beautiful hike.

unusual rock formations, hiking, park, boating - great for family, solo, etc - only $3 park fee - area for families

Beautiful scenery, poor trails

By MattDamon94 |

The scenery itself is beautiful and not something you'll see everyday. Outside of the main trail, the trails are very poor and not marked well at all. It's very difficult to actually stay on the side trails and very easy to get lost. There were several times where we thought we couldn't possibly be on the trail, but later found out that we were. I'd recommend just staying on the main trail and getting a few good pictures.

Beautiful and unexpected scenery in AZ high desert.

By franciehomewood_IL |

This is a beautiful lake with rock formations called dells. Boating in the form of kayaking and canoeing is available. There is also a fishing pier. A variety of birds can be seen. Picnicing and hiking trails.

A neat way to spend a morning - such unique scenery!

By Riplee04 |

SUCH a cool experience. This lake has many (rocky) trails to explore and wonderful scenery and birds to see. Fun watching the ducks & geese in and out of the water. I'm not a skilled hiker, but we walked the many, well marked trails for about 2 hours, stopping to rest and take in the nice breeze. A must-do if you're in the area!

Beautiful lake with noise pollution

By RJ |

Beautiful lake, but the insane amount of air traffic is ridiculous for a “small town”. So much noise pollution. It did not use to be this way. If you want a peaceful experience on a lake, I would suggest somewhere else. Such a sad thing when a small town is attempting to be hub for the sky.

What a unique spot almost within town

By cndrocks |

Can’t say enough about the beauty and surroundings of this spot. We took the dot hike which would be great with sure footed kids, as you follow the white dots painted on rocks to navigate the boulders and trail around lake. We got about 1/3 of way around and returned upon learning the true length of trail.
From the boat ramp , if you take the trail to last facing lake you are immediately in to the rock scrambling and fun. Also while we were there if you go on Wednesday’s you avoid the $3 park fee. We will go back a 2nd time but next time I will bring good soled hiking boots.

Beautiful! Must see!

By Jeanne H |

Beautiful lake and scenery all around! Since it’s a State park, each car paid $3 to enter, and it was well worth it. You could spend the day there, but we walked around d and took some great pictures. There’s camping, at least one playground, boating, fishing, hiking, and grilling.

Amazing park just outside Prescott that isn't a full day excursion

By HaveBagsPackedAlways |

The scenery around this lake is completely different than any other place we have been, and we come from an area of 1,000s of lakes. The rock formations are so unusual it had an other worldly feeling about it. Hiking around requires some good footwear, but is worth the effort. (watch the kids!!) There were quite a few people there, but we enjoyed the views and people were considerate and friendly as we were all trying to capture the views in our cameras. Small fee to park, but no park entrance fee.

Watson Lake Dam

By John H |

Although the water in the lake is down quite a few feet any hikes along the lake or down to the bottom of the dam are well worth the hike. Lots of migratory birds right now in January. Saw a number of canadian geese, bald eagle flying over and a few blue herons.
The Flume trail down to the bottom of the damn and in the canyon below goes up and down over a lot of granite outcroppings and rocks. RECOMMEND good boots or shoes as a twisted ankle could be an easy goops. This flume trails were mostly constructed by the Over the Hill Gang a group of senior volunteers.
The 3 three dollars for your vehicle go towards maintenance of city parks.

Beautiful day visit

Beautiful lake for kayaking. With all the boulders and lots of geese and ducks. I enjoyed my visit. $3.00 fee to enter.

Do the loop trail.

By Scuffy13 |

The loop trail is the reason why I gave it an excellent rating. After parking at the boat ramp, the trail goes to the left and offers great views.

Beautiful

By n s |

Go see it! The rocks are.called.the Dells. Remember to ”save the dells” kayaking and canoeing available on the lake. No swimming as it's a reservoir for the Prescott region.

Perfect picnic lunch spot

By Cheryl M |

We went to Watson Lake for a Mystery Picnic Lunch and we were able to find a table for all 6 of us and all the food containers that we collected on our scavenger hunt. There are a lot of picnic table scattered all over the place and plenty of walking and hiking trails. The water is a brilliant blue color and mesmerizing to view. Playgrounds in a couple locations also.

Nice view of the lake. Looks like a great place to visit. Lots of wildlife (Canadian Geese). Wish we had more time to visit. Fee for day use areas.

Kayaking on Watson lake

By Kathleen L |

Kayaking on Watson lake . Rented a double kayak and had a great time ! Absolutely wonderful! Was wishing I had my fishing pole!

Green Water

By Scott B |

This was last year in August, 2017. The lake's surroundings are beautiful, but the water kinda makes you not want to touch it. Once in my kayak, I was OK, but it would be much more pleasant were the water not so clouded up with algae. The park itself is wonderful, & the hiking / walking trails are nice. Better water quality would earn it more stars!

Beautiful!

By Wander582130 |

Very close to town and a nice place to stretch the legs after a long drive. The rock formations are reminiscent of Joshua Tree - only with LOTS of water. When we visited, some of the trails were quite muddy and the water level was so high that portions of the trails were under water. Once the water recedes, it would be a lovely walk all the way around the lake. Worth the $3 entry fee.

This restaurant has a very nice view of the lake. The food is good, it will cost you $40 for lunch for two people.

Best hike ever

By DonnaSchenck |

We hiked about 7 miles on a beautiful trail through a wooded area, along the lake, and through the most unusual rock formations. We also saw various birds and large turtles along the way. Highly recommend. You won’t regret it

Scenery unlike other places

By Susan L |

Started at North boat ramp heading counter clockwise. Confusing marking of trails. (Seriously, white spray painted dots?) Very little shade, lots of people out and about.
$3 for entry into park area. Beautiful park. My dog had a great time scrambling on rocks! Lots of lizards sunbathing and had a snake slither across trail.
Also did Geocaching here.
Take plenty of water!

Good place to hike.

By Michael S |

This is a good place to hike. There are several options. There is a trail that winds through the area over rocks, and then there is the Peavine Trail nearby.

Do Not Miss the Scenery

By Sherri D |

This might be one of the most beautiful places that we’ve been to In Arizona. The lake and rock formations were just breathtaking- a great place to hike and spend the day.

Chased away with a rifle

By cmlvngstn |

I was hiking in the area with a friend. My parents had married there 70 + years before. I heard someone yell at me and could see a man with a rifle pointed at us. I did not open any gates or cross any fences or keep out signs. This man told us to leave or he’d shoot. Never going back again.

Lake Loop Trail review: best "bang for the buck" along the northern half

By Jim L |

Since I’m not a very experienced hiker I decided to see the really cool stuff first … before I got tired. I started at the eastern end of Watson Lake Park Road, and headed to the left (while facing the lake) to go clockwise around the lake trail. This way took me immediately into the most rugged areas where the views are the best. The rock formations bordering the northern half of the lake are the most otherworldly, and I really enjoyed the hike. Got tired, though (read on).

Thanks to the park staff who marked the trail with white spots on the rocks! Without the markings I might have gotten lost for days and I’m glad there were very few places where I couldn’t see the next spot from the previous one. Because of the ruggedness of the trail combined with my desire to take lots of photos, I was moving at way less than a mile an hour.

The best scenery was between my starting point and the dam at the northern end of the lake. The trail then goes behind the dam into low lying areas that are possibly squishy and muddy (February), and the dam is just not gorgeous from that perspective.

Continuing around to the east side, the trail alternated between rugged and flat(er) stretches. Fully halfway around the lake, the terrain became flat, with the great rock formations behind me. I was tired by then, my foot was hurting and I lost the trail markings. I wound up on the [gravel] Peavine Trail—behind a treatment plant—where numerous other people were walking, so I took that south to what turned out to be the parking lot for the trailhead. I was way more tired than I expected, but I saw all the amazing rock formations next to the lake and got some great photos. All told, I was on the trail for about 4 hours.

great natural beauty

I made the short hike from the point of rocks rv park.. some many different types of birds and wonderful rocks

Scenic circular hike - what’s not to like

By islandgirlcityboy |

Fancied a hike and thought to take the Pealine Linear Trail...so glad we didn’t. The Watson Lake Loop Trail is a moderate hike over granite rocks, climbing high then dipping down to secluded coves. Posted as just short of 5 miles but, with the heat and altitude (we live at sea level) and time to take photos (every 5 mins!), it took us 4 hours give or take. The way is well marked, there are toilets and water stations near the start but we didn’t see a soul on the way. If you want a bit of a hike, a bit of a scramble and beautiful scenery then you can’t beat this place. If you are too tight to pay the $3 dollar parking charge the you can find other access points but, hey, toilets, maps, way marking costs money......do your bit and enjoy! PS wear good approach shoes for grip, lots of water, mozzie repellent (not sure we needed it but plenty of midges) and SUN BLOCK!

A very pleasant surprise

By Anne T |

We decided to do a day trip to Prescott, and to check out some places we hadn't been before. Our first stop was Watson Lake, and it far exceeded our expectations! It is absolutely stunning. There was beauty everywhere we looked. We weren't prepared to hike, but did walk part way around the lake - we will come back when it's cooler and do the whole loop. There was even a disc golf course! And lots of picnic areas and fun places for kids. Not sure how we missed it on our other trips to Prescott, but we will return and bring friends and tell others about it. As a bonus parking is free on Wednesdays.

Great getaway!

By Abdul Alyaarobi |

Located just 4 miles from Prescott, this beautiful lake is an oasis when you are looking to escape the desert heat. Though swimming is prohibited, there are many other fun activities to do at Watson Lake including fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, hiking, and camping.
Local rockclimbers use the granite cliffs above and adjacent to the lake for top-roping and lead climbing.
We have visited in October & it was awesome experience.

Granite dell rocks

By LaPaj |

These rocks vary in size from small to humongous. Surrounding the lake, they provide an incredible hiking and photographic experience.

WOW! What a Lake

By csatths |

Great place to enjoy a hike, especially on the North side of the lake. Beautiful rocks and gorgeous water. The trail is well marked by white dots and as long as you follow them you will not get lost. Plenty of places to stop and enjoy the view, take a nap, have a snack. Lots of up and down but not too strenuous. However, pack plenty of water....you will need it on a bright and sunny day!

My wife and I took a very nice day hike around a part of Watson Lake last month.
A very beautiful lake with fantastic rock formations! We were amazed that this lake was so close to the city.

Kayaking the Boulders

By 254teresak |

Relaxing lake to kayak with young and old, fish, picnic and relax! Some Camping sites as well. They rent boats and kayaks on weekends as well.

Very nice way to spend an outdoor day.

By xnycop |

Very scenic. Lots of kayaks in the water. I was not sure if we had to bring our own or if there was a rental available. Plenty or parking. Lots of easy to navigate trails.

Beautiful lake

By JoySteve |

Stopped along a new route for getting to Sedona from PHX. This Arizona area is too beautiful to keep driving on I-17 to Sedona. After seeing photos of Watson Lake online, we decided to take a detour and glad we did. A very different look that we haven’t seen before. Not a big area, it was a great break and leg stretch before. If you have time, they also rent kayaks.

Amazing scenery

By Laura L |

This was a bucket list item for me, and I'm so glad we were able to make it to this amazing place. We started our looking around from the top parking lot, and the views were incredible. We made our way down the road to where you can launch your canoe, kayak or rowboat. From there, you can hike all the way around the lake I imagine. We went part way and then turned back. All in all, we got some fantastic pictures and I would recommend you stop by if you're ever in the neighbourhood.

Great place to kayak!

By Buckandtheteacher |

My wife and I had a fun day kayaking on Watson Lake. It only cost $3.00 to enter (It's free on Wednesdays). It costs $15 an hour to rent a single seat kayak and $20 for a double seater. The water was calm and the wind didn't pick up until later. The views of the rock formations and birds coupled with a good upper body workout made it a fun experience. Paddling and trying to steer the kayak against the wind can be challenging, so I suggest getting there early (kayak rental starts at 7am) because the wind starts to pick up later in the day.

Fun outdoor activities

Beautiful views. Hiking all around. Ducks near the water. And plenty of trails where you can be alone,if you wish.

Outstanding place to visit in Prescott, AZ

Outstanding place to visit in Prescott, AZ.
Gorgeous lake, nice formations. Beautiful scenic to take there photos

BEAUTIFUL

By Lauren D |

First time visiting the lake and wow! Just wow! It was beautiful. We parked at the bottom of the hill and walked up to the viewing area for the lake. After taking many photos up top - there is a trail marked by white dots to follow down to the bottom of the lake. The hike down and back takes 15 minutes tops. It was beautiful! We want to go back and kayak next time. Parking was only $3 for access 6am-10pm - Wednesday is free.

Granite boulders

By dt95 |

Go up to the top for the view to start your visit. It is beautiful with all the granite boulders and out cropping. Enjoy some of the hiking trails.

Pretty but not many services other than a big grass area.

By ALYYH654 |

This lake was OK but not many picnic tables. Go to Goldwater lake instead. This lake is $3 except Wednesdays are free.

The only reason to go to Prescott!

Kayaking around Watson Lake was awesome, and made coming to Prescott worthwhile. Prescott Outdoors was great. Initially the lake looks pretty sleepy, but around the bend its just great!

Hike in granite

By Wendy K |

Beautiful place to unwind and do a bit of rock climbing or hiking. Kayak rental was closed but would have been fun too. They are having a Celtic festival this weekend in the park.

Nice and scenic lake

By Quadyak |

Our second time kayaking on this lake. Very nice once again. The rock structure and all the little fingers, coveys, coves and rock islands make this a very nice place to kayak. The camera does not get much rest. This late in August there was a lot of algae present in the water but it was still well worth kayaking. We were here 5 or so years ago in early August and we could not remember if there was any algae on that trip. Still very nice and a must do whether kayaking or just checking it out. Hiking loop also available.

Very enjoyable hike to the Watson Lake Dam

By Greg P |

We hiked as a large group with children from the Watson Lake Parking area along Watson Lake until we were on Granite Creek below the Dam. We walked up Granite Creek on a trail to the dam. It was a very enjoyable hike. There was some areas that were a bit strenuous especially for the kids.

Great place

By Cindy S |

A wonderful place. Trails all over the lake and adjacent area and a nice main trail on which to bike. You can also challenge yourself through the rocky sections. One can enter through parking areas both north and south of the lake for a $3 daily pass. Keep an eye out for the bald eagle soaring through the sky.

Hike it or Kayak it

By gregriordon22 |

Either way you will enjoy the views and prehistoric feel of the rock formations. There is a bike trail, a hiking trail and a place to rent kayaks

Beautiful lake, with granite dells along the shore

By Kenneth J |

Unhappily, the City of Prescott is now charging a fee for access to the path.....
I guess we don’t pay enough taxes!!!

Fascinating!

By MarkR |

The photos speak for themselves. The rock formations are truly unusual and strangely beautiful, especially as reflected in the lake. There seem to be a few trail options, ranging from very easy to moderate. I was there late afternoon and had fabulous views.

Great place to spend the day!

By kistlerb |

We brought our own kayaks and used the south boat launch area to put them into the lake. You can rent kayaks there and there is also a north launch area. We had a picnic lunch there. Also played the disc golf course - not the best when you have to trample through grass and thistles. The hike around the lake is awesome!

Picturesque Watson Lake

By Cie S |

Yes, it is as beautiful as the photos. I think I will buy a kayak so I can enjoy itmore. Quiet and great photos are guaranteed.

Very scenic lake

By staffy02 |

We did the trail around the lake. What a super walk. Well signposted and easy to follow. Take water with you as this is a 4 hour walk and there are no places to get food or drink once you leave the lakeside.

Chilly and snow covered when we went...but amazing views, birds, rock formations. The photographers among us had a great time. Looking forward to going back in warmer weather with my paddle board and a chance to also do some hiking.

do not build in the dells

By 113mion |

wonderful lake year round but city keeps draining it to build more. the lake is owed by the city of prescott and they use it for water credits . water mark now at -5 ft. this lake should be for the people to enjoy.

Most amazing location

By Lisa O |

This is one of my favorite spots in Arizona. The fact that developers want to come in and develop all around this lake , sadden me. There's so many great amazing trails to go around and spend the day bring a light lunch or snack and there's a large shoreline that you can just sit and enjoy the water and the birds and the breeze. During the summer months you can rent kayaks and go out onto the lake and it's just amazing the clouds, the view ,the colors.. I highly recommend it! And if you love it just like I do , let's all try to save it!!!

A Great Day Trip

What a great hike!

We did the clockwise version from east parking lot. It was not strenuous for us but we are very active. The views were beautiful, just watch for the white paint which lead you through the rocks. 5.5 miles worth of pure joy!

Great place

By creeperking190 |

The Granite Dells are a great place to go to if someone wants to relax and think. Firstly the lakes beauty is calming and is great to sit, watch, and relax to get their mind off things. Second the trails are long enough so that people can relax and stare off into space or admire the scenery. Lastly, there are many secret nooks and crannies that barely anyone knows about and they make a great place to stop for a break or to sit and read a book.

The lake is a beautiful place and is a great site to visit and to many it is calm and relaxing. The lake is dammed off so it doesn’t have strong natural waves. The lake moves slowly to where they people have to pay close attention to how it moves. The center of the lake is filled with islands that add to the scenery. People are able to rent a boat or kayak so they can travel out around these islands and around the lake. Many animals make up the surrounding areas of the Granite dells and almost all of them will eventually make their way near the water. Two of the most prominent animals that people will see are the ducks and the geese. As long as they stay away and don’t mess with them they can be calming and relaxing to watch.

The trails are one of the Dells best qualities and make up the main purpose people go to them to walk. Hiking along these trails are what will make up most of their day unless they have a specific place to go to. On the weekdays almost nobody is there since they have work or school. Having a day off on one of these days can be the best even if it's difficult to get these days. The trails lead through beautiful scenery that include many things from the green plant filled areas that fill the air with a fresh smell. If someone were to follow one of the trails on a offshoot trail that most people don’t think about will lead them to a dam that holds the water in Watson Lake. This path will only take about forty five minutes to an hour depending on how fast they go. The area of the dam can be two ways. If there was rain recently then the dam could be overflowing and have a mini rapids at its base. The other way would be when it has been dry for a while and the bottom will be dry or have stagnant water at its base. While walking on the main trails it's very easy to zone out and be able to walk along them without much effort so that you have plenty of time to think.

The Granite Dells are filled with many nooks and crannies that almost no one knows about. These are mostly off of the trails and most people don’t know about them. These such places are can be climbed to or walked to in some cases. One such places is a cave that is a bit away from a trail. This cave is small and not to out of the way but still offers a great view. This cave also has a miniature secret about it also, If someone were to climb up a rope that is tied to the top of the cave then they can go up to a secret second story that is actually pretty large. Another place would be a hole in the middle of two trails that pass by. If someone were to go off one of these trails then they can easily find this area. It is hidden in a divite in the mountains plus it has a natural bench. There is many others in the area that you can only find by exploring. The areas that are hidden like this are great places to rest and take a break. If someone were to find a place that can negate sounds it can be a cool place to sit and relax. Someone can also bring a book to read if you want to spend your day in a relaxing place.

The Granite Dells are a great place to go and relax. They are filled with caves and secret areas unknown to most people that make a great destination to relax or just to read a book. The trails are great and are a good place to zone out. Lastly the lake is a beautiful area that is filled with islands and animals that add to its beauty. Some people may believe that there are better places to go to relax. In my opinion, the Granite Dells are the best place to let go of all worries and reconnect yourself

Stunning Rock Formations

Beautiful setting for hiking, picnics, kayaking or just relaxing. Rock formations are fantastic, great for photography. Hiking trails around the lake, with a waterfall on the backside. Inexpensive self pay parking & free on Wednesday.

Amazing!

By N0ah_H |

Its all true. Do not miss this place. Kayak or canoe on the lake and explore the majestic scenery around endless unique rock formations. Loop trail hike around the lake involves some significant climbing and is somewhat lengthy, maybe not for families with kids to do the whole loop.

You must go here

Go here and hike around the lake. It will blow your mind. I’ve never seen rock formations like this. Very cool 5 mile hike around Watson Lake

Unique and Picturesque Lake in Prescott

By Cindy Metz |

This was my second time - 1:45 min drive from Scottsdale so an easy day trip. I kayaked the last time - rentals were easy to access and affordable. This time we must have missed the fine print and came up on a Thursday to find that rentals are Fri-Sun. No problem - we also planned to hike the circumference of the lake, so that was the focus of this trip. A little warm in late June so advised to start early - which we did at 7:30 from the boat ramp by the kayak rentals. We went clockwise which seemed opposite of the signage. The trail is a little confusing as there is ultimate frisbee along side the hiking trails. When we finally got to the Granite Dells we began to see the white dots that marked the way - most of the time they were easy to find but there were times we could not find them and bushwacked our way back to the trail. Due to the bushwacking - we completed the whole loop in 2.5 hours. There is some shade but not much, so go early in the summer months and Fri-Sat if you want to rent a kayak or paddleboard. Highly recommend visiting the lake and then going downtown for lunch.

Super awesome Sunset!

Will be back in the summer.

Great place for hiking/bouldering

By Jj____ |

Make sure you hit this place up if you’re visiting and are on a limited time scale. Very unique formations and really fun to climb all over the boulders. Makes for some really great scenic pictures to send back to your family or post on Facebook. It’s 3 bucks per car to get in but well worth it.

Fun, fun, fun

We spent most of one Sunday in kayaks, on Lake Watson, and hiking around It on Watson LakeLoop Trail. Do not miss this gem when visiting Prescott.

Lovely views of the Granite dells. Worth the short drive out to see the lake and rocks. Hiking trails go around the lake.

Beautiful afternoon hike

By KatliFitora |

We went to Prescott (pronounced Preskitt) for a quick day trip to beat the heat in Phoenix. Watson Lake was the end of our day, short hike before sunset and to check out whatever a granite dell is. It was beautiful. Small fee to get into park, no attendant so you probably didnt have to pay, but hey, support the Parks. We went for a 20-30 minute hike from the boat launch to the dam. Lots of ups and downs over the hilly shores, but nothing too strenuous. Loved climbing up and on the dells, with beautiful views of the lake. There were benches scattered along the trail at picturesque points where you could sit back and enjoy the view. We were there on a weekday and basically had the place to ourselves. Would definitely go again, I want to hike the whole train next time!

I've been in better smelling outhouses

By TravAlinMan |

People calling this place a gem???? Lmao.....it us a disgusting looking and smelling algae pond that will KILL you and your pets if you ingest it.

Seriously folks....IT IS DISGUSTING!

We drove out to check out the lake. The views are pure beauty. The large rocks all over are very cool to climb on. We didnt get to do much as a massive storm was just coming in but even though just being able to look around was great. We will definitely go when weather is better

Great Picnic

By Timothy C |

Our realtor had a picnic here this past weekend to thank all her clients. The picnic was in a covered Ramada with great views of the lake, and the folks kayaking, trying paddle boards or sailing. It is much larger than you realize driving by. This would be perfect for a family get together, team or office events as well. Parking is plentiful. Cost to park is $3. There is some camping as well, during the summer. Really a great spot.

We had seen pictures of the Watson Lake Dells but seeing them in person was worth the trip. Beautiful foes not describe what you see. Definitely a must see. Rent a canoe or kayak and really enjoy the Dells.

Great hike around the lake! Be prepared to climb up and over boulders. Take plenty of water and pictures!

Reasonably Nice Hiking Available

By GEDLosAngeles_CA |

While it's not exactly an Adirondacks Lake, Watson Lake provides a reasonably ok place for a few hours' hike, or less. Rocks at one end are striking and trails vary in length. One trail circles the modest sized lake, but if you have less time or inclination, there's a shorter trail that takes you down to the water. Trails are reasonably well marked.

Geese flew directly overhead, but I wasn't quick enough to take a shot with my iPhone. Morning starts colder but area heats up pretty well by mid-day, even in winter, so take a pack into which you can stuff your jacket. Parking lot is ample and directly adjacent to the lake and trails. Entire place is just a short drive from downtown Prescott, so that's a good thing about this pretty diversion.

A perfect day trip

By ThebestofKendell |

Beautiful Lake in Az. Good place for kayaking and paddle boarding. There isn’t a ton of shade, which is too be expected for the desert. Bring water if you plan on hiking. Great spot for kids, however no swimming as the water isn’t very clean. Wednesday’s are free to enter the park and plenty of parking on site. Be aware of the bees if you have an allergy. There are bathrooms and parks to play at for the kids. Really a beautiful place. I took a book and some snacks and relaxed by the lake all day. Highly recommend for a day trip out of Phoenix.

This is a prefect place for hiking beginners and it offers beautiful views. I do suggest wearing hiking shoes rather than sneakers for better traction when going up the rocks. Trails are clearly marked by following the white spots. Bring water.

We did not walk around the lake, though there was a path available. Picnic areas with tables and a gazebo. We drove up by the gazebo and took photos of the interesting rock formations. We were lucky since there were no day fees on Wednesday.

It's always a dazzler

By tibber55 |

I was here with a photography workshop but I've been here twice before in the mid 2000s so I was excited to be able to use my big camera to photograph the place. We were up for the sunrise. From our perch on the west side we didn't get any cool clouds or anything, but the views were incredible as you looked into and past the confines of Watson Lake.

Later that afternoon we went up the Peavine Trail for about 1 3/4 miles. We enjoyed the scenery along the way and of course once you get to the lake, you get to see lots of ducks and we saw a couple cormorants. Where we did our shooting there was a Great Blue Heron high in the boulders peering down on us. The sunset was a bit disappointing but we made the best of it. On the way back, I was able to get some pretty colored sunset shots.

The next morning's sunrise had that pink hue for maybe 5 minutes. We were down at the boat dock. Fortunately there were a couple geese that entertained us as well as several ducks including a beautiful Golden Eye. I also saw another Great Blue Heron in the distance and we had some geese flyovers.

It's a wonderful place so if you get the chance to visit, no matter for how long, I highly recommend it.

Hidden Treasure

By RedRocksPhoto |

It took me by complete surprise. There are multiple trails in the park, but make sure you don't just go to the overlook to snap a picture and turn around. If physically fit, park near the boat ramp and hike INTO to rock formation, or if you are really fit, go wild there. It is amazing to be among the 1.5 billion years old rocks with shapes only you can imaging. Bring your lunch, you can certainly find a quiet niche to enjoy it.. just make sure you don't leave anything behind.

Beautiful but disappointing

By Campagna49 |

My husband and I went to Watson Lake with the intention of walking/hiking around the lake. Following the white dots was very difficult since many of them were not easily recognizable. I'm sure with the amount of rain that Prescott has had, that many got washed away or faded. The terrain was more difficult that I had expected. I wouldn't recommend it for people unless you want an obstacle course. The lake is beautiful. You'd be better off going kayaking.

Understated Beauty!

By SeSe |

We visited Prescott the same day as Sedona and decided to stop by Watson Lake around 1 PM. The parking ticket was $3. The lake was absolutely beautiful with a deep blue hue. There was definitely an understated beauty to the lake and the surrounding rock formations. It was one of our favorite stops on our road trip. Around sunset we decided to stop by again to the lake to take pictures. We missed the peak sunset time. Still, our pictures turned out gorgeous. Loved this lake so much! It is a nice break from the grand rock formations of the surrounding area.

Great Scenic Hiking Spot

By Jerry P |

Very cool topography and hiking is scenic and varied. Would do it again! Finish the hike on the north end of the lake, it is the most scenic and rugged terrain.

Must stop if in the Prescott area

By Rimrock52 |

This State Park is a gorgeous spot for hikers, dog lovers and scenic photos. It is well maintained and there several different ways to reach the lake. There is access above the lake where all the unusual rock formations are on vivid display and a lake access with boat ramp at lake level. There is a hiking trail that goes all the way around the lake for those looking for a real hike, but other trails give you access to rocky areas to take pictures or just sit and take it all in. Some boys were playing frisbee golf and a lot of people were walking their dogs as it is very dog friendly for “friendly dogs on a leash”. The blue sky and water are breathtaking against the backdrop of the red outcropping rocks. Loved it. Plenty of restrooms and playgrounds. Worth the stop if you’re anywhere close.

Nice lake to explore

PROS: idyllic location with trails and looked like there were boat rentals.
CONS: not sure it is open to swimming

Fave place to oogle Red Rocks

By Rich O |

All time favorite place to take in and enjoy AZ Red Rocks. Added to that is that it is best observed from the water in a kayak or canoe, allows you too enjoy looking at the waterfowl.

Unique lake to kayak

By April J |

We rented Kayaks from Prescott Outdoors - 2 tandem kayaks. Very reasonable prices. Beautiful lake area. The rocks were like something out of a movie. Very unique area. So very peaceful and calm. If we lived nearby, we'd definitely buy kayaks to use this lake often. We also picnicked after in the park near the lake. It was beautiful. Lots of open area -- people playing frisbee, tossing a football, soccer, etc. Very pretty.

Awesome Tranquil place to chill

By Traveler121429 |

Visited Jan 2019. Quite a tranquil place to relax and enjoy the wonderful view of the majestic lake. Take a short hike to the water level and take some awesome pics. I think the entrance was around $6 per car but well worth it. Kinda like an oasis in that area. Well worth the visit.

Interesting hike. Beautiful rock formations

By Valerie9992 |

Flat but difficult terrain with all the rocks, so hiking boots are helpful. We got caught in a rain storm, but it was warm, so it made it more interesting. People were kayaking on this lake that you cannot swim in...so I would take my kayak next time.

Lake view

Very nice view of the lake. rustic atmosphere, food and service is very good. Prices are very reasonable!

Watson Lake Loop is one of my favorite hikes ever

By Mariah BN |

If you're physically fit, take the loop trail all the way around the lake (we went counter-clockwise, traversing the flat section first). Simply stunning views of the lake and the ancient, oddly shaped boulders, many of which one must scramble over. Highly recommended. Well marked with signs and white marks, which are more important than you might think, since there are options along the loop, and much of the trail is over boulders. Took us 3 hours. Carried 2 bottles of ordinary-sized water each, and ran out at the end. Be sure to take at least that much water. AZ is not only hot but dry.

Lovely area to walk about except it always windy, so picnics are kind of challenging. Fun area for all levels of walking

By Amy K |

Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Prescott. It is a lovely area, and very pretty for photos. Plan on wearing sneakers or hiking shoes because there are lots of rocks that you can hurt your toes on if and sandals.

New Years 2019

By Duane P |

We welcome in the New Year with a lovely winter snow in Prescott. Perfect time for a visit to Watson Lake. Just us and the Geese. If need to to hang out with nature for a little quiet time. This is the place.

Over night

By paws0810 |

Beautiful. Lake. Scenery is amazing. It was why we drove from mesa to stay over night and visit. We did not bike or kayaks. Would visit again

Very Enjoyable Landscapes!

By Barb P |

When we visit our granchildren in Prescott they always want to take us to Watson Lake! Great views of the lake and rock formations! Have an updated playground and picnic area for the youngsters to play on. Also have a large grassy area to fly drones, play football, play with your dog etc. Great hiking trails also!

Hiking

By ilindac |

Watson Lake is beautiful! I like to hike, but Watson is too hot for me in the summer, so I’ll be there fall, winter & spring. Lots of hiking available & beautiful sites! For families, there’s a playground, a picnic shelter, and other picnic tables. They have an annual dog competition, I believe in August or September. $3.00 to park unless you have a Prescott pass (not a national park pass, this is different). Enjoy!

Beautiful Hike Among the Boulders

By Gwen C |

One of the most beautiful places to hike! Some sections are level down by the lake, others are more rocky with trails through the granite boulders. The views from all trails are absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. Wednesdays are free to enter.

Beautiful

What a wonderful resource for the prescott area. There is so much to do from boating, canoeing, hiking and cycling. Many points of access off Rt 89.

Fabulous!

Loved the rock formations! The snow made it extra special! The park is well taken care of as well! A must if you're in town!

Good hike

Great hiking with some challenging rocks and climbing and some leisurely walkable trails. Very well marked and a lot of fun.

Very Pretty Rocks and water

By Tom M |

Didn't realize there was a place like this in Prescott, AZ. Kayaking and canning only, but a very surreal place to be. Water level is currently down substantially due to the drought. But still capable of handling the kayaks and canoes. Very pretty area.

Lots to do !!

By UKVISIT |

Go for a hike, or a kayak ( rentals available on site). The scenery is beautiful ....lots of huge boulders, water is pretty clear. The park entrance attendants were fantastic and so happy to help. The trails are pretty good too. $3 to get in is very reasonable.

Perfect, Peaceful, Prescott.

By Scott V |

Took a one day trip from Phoenix to Prescott. Went to whiskey Row & Watson Lake. Great little town. People very friendly.

Beautiful area

By Mark S |

Excellent area for photography and kayaking. When my father was alive and living in the Prescott area I would always go over to Watson Lake, being a photographer by trade it was a beautiful place for photographs. It is also very peaceful there and I enjoyed the solitude

Spectacular

By pamela t |

We pass this lake frequently.
It is just awesome. It matches equally to other spots far more famous. In Prescott we are fortunate to have such scenery from historic downtown to mountains, to valleys, and to radiating red rocks.

Great walking paths

By Tom Y |

Very nice local park. Plenty of walking paths along the lake. Nice picnic area and boat launch. Would be an excellent place for a quiet paddle or a swim in the heat of summer.

A lovely delight!

By Rhea A |

Watson Lake is a lovely destination while in the Prescott area. I lived there for 5 years, and love to return to the lake. So many things to do at the lake. My favorites are hiking on the many trails, having a picnic, and bird watching. Plus the water and the rocks are beautiful. A great place to walk dogs as well.

Stunning in the AM sunlight

Well worth the stop ... the main trail will give you the views you want to see ... super place for great photos ... panoramic shots galore

Awesome View

Watson Lake is a great place to relax, picnic tables, large grassy area, super view of the lake, camping area

Hiking close to town

By Lee Ann T |

Very close to the center of Prescott. A nice place to hike, various places for a picnic (some covered areas), kayaking rentals available, interesting terrain.

Hiking Watson Lake

By Mike S |

Awesome place to hike, well marked trails with paint dots to keep on trail and lots of sinage at forks.

Blue skies and Boulders

By Teresa Deprez |

We enjoyed the beautiful, breathtaking views, the gorgeous blue sky, and the hiking trails. Since we went in May it was a little hot for us, and there’s no swimming in the lake. You can rent a boat, can you or kayak and enjoy the lake from the surface though.

Kayaking on Watson Lake

By cathy l |

We had the most beautiful, clear day. The rock formations were beautiful and it was very peaceful. I would definitely recommend Watson Lake if you like to relax or kayak.

Beautifull Serenity

By Scout4x |

Although we visited during an August weekend and expected it to be overrun withpicnickers, there was plenty of parking and many places to walk or hike without being overwhelmed by too many people on the trails or by screaming children. City owned, we couldn't use our "golden passes", but that hardly mattered as the fee is reasonably priced.

Other Worldly

By LifeIsGoodGuy |

The area around Watson Lake looks like a setting in some Sci Fi movie. Huge granite boulders in and out of the water. My favorite lake in the Prescott area...... Life Is Good

Spectacular views of lake surrounded by giant boulders

By Ana V |

Do not miss visiting Watson Lake. The hike involves a bit of a rock scramble at times, so it may not be for all ages, but you can still enjoy viewing this lake. There is a local company that will rent kayaks and canoes and bring them to the lake for you. Next time I plan to do this. The hike starts to the left when you arrive and you will see great views of the lake along the way. You get the best pictures early in the morning, or as the sun is setting.

Beautiful

By DOCBABE_SCOUT |

This can be viewed from highway or walking. The granite and contrast with lake is very, very enjoyable and worth the short drive from town.
