This beautiful garden nestled in the hills of New York City is a beautiful hidden gem. Smaller than Central Park and actually in the Bronx - you would think that you were in the country side. The children will love exploring the area and you can have a leisurely stroll. Highly recommend it!

Set in such a gorgeous part of the Bronx; who would know?! Wonderful time strolling the grounds; enjoying summer flowers; sure that it is pretty and unique in all seasons. Very reasonable admission. Had a lovely lunch at their cafe. They offer unique and interesting items in their gift shop, as well as live plants for sale, too. They have various special programs and music events too. Look at their website for details. I'd say, don't miss this gem of a site off of the beaten trail(oh, but easy to reach via public transit!!)

Get there Saturday before noon and it is free, thanks to Target.

Travel on the #1 train to the end of the line and arrive before 11 am.
There is a shuttle at about 11:15 from in front of the Burger King.

And Wave hill is fun, but bring your own food.
They are not incredibly expensive, but it is a bit overpriced
and you can have a picnic near the entrance.

Great views of New Jersey. don't miss it.

What a lovely destination! At the last train stop in the Bronx, you descend a long set of stairs to a busy urban street. A courtesy van whisks you away through a bucolic neighborhood with lovely old, stately homes and gorgeous foliage. You depart the van to enter a peaceful respite with views of the Hudson River and over 20 acres to explore. One can meander the extensive gardens, tour the Wave Hill House, walk through the green house, or grab a snack at The Café. Pack a picnic lunch and recline on the many extensive lawns overlooking the Hudson River.

I spend a lot of time visiting botanical gardens- this one is worth a visit- not large- pretty views and relaxing areas for my husband to sit while I geek-out over plants- enjoyed the wild garden where you can really see how the plants perform and spread!

By Annie K |

Wonderful place to relax, walk around, admire the beautiful flowers and trees, enjoy the magnificent view or just sit down with a great book. You can bring your own food and have a picnic in the designated areas or enjoy a snack at the cafe. However, the menu is very limited and expensive. Great experience and will definitely go back to enjoy all that it has to offer.

It has taken me 19 years of living in New York to make it here, but so happy I did. I visited on a recent gorgeous Saturday.

Getting there is relatively easy if you time it right. You can take the 1 train to the end of the line and a shuttle will meet you at 10 minutes after the hour. It only runs once an hour, however.

We also happened to arrive just as a tour of the grounds was starting. This lasted about an hour and a half and took us through a couple of the main houses and provided a lot of interesting historical context for the grounds. The guide was very thorough and knowledgable.

There are lots of gardens and a couple of conservatories to wonder through, a very nice gift shop, plus some trails through the woods that you can also explore -- though we didn't have time for that. Best of all, sit on the hillside in one of the big wooden chairs and watch the river roll by with the all the amazing scents around you.

There is a cafe, but it filled up quickly. It might be better to take a blanket and a picnic, which several groups had done. This is a really wonderful way to spend the afternoon, especially if you want to escape the mania of New York City.

TIP: If you make it to the gate by noon on Saturday, admission is free!

Wave Hill just reopened the grounds. All buildings are closed but it's a lovely spot to walk around. There are woodland trails, gardens and beautiful waver views. Looking forward to returning when everything is open.

Beautiful, smallish garden with exquisite plantings and trees and fabulous Hudson views. Tuesdays are free parking sponsored by Target.

It's a must see estate and garden in the Hudson Hill section of the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx. Just follow the signs to Wave Hill from the 249th Street exit off the Henry Hudson Parkway. It's a beautiful scenic route that takes you past the Cloisters Museum. I would have never known about it had I not purchased the New York Pass. The pass allowed us admission to the gardens. We only paid $8 for parking.

It truly is the best kept secret of the Bronx. The view of the Palisades and the George Washington Bridge was the main attraction for me. The surrounding gardens are amazing and well-kept. I can see why couples choose to have their wedding photos taken here. Make sure you bring a camera to capture the beauty that surrounds you. It was the highlight of our trip to NYC. What's amazing is that many people in the city don't know about this place, or don't take the time to explore it. My only regret is that we didn't have enough time to walk along the woodland trails, or have coffee in the café. I would visit it at least once a month if I were living in the city. It's such a beautiful and peaceful place. A great respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

By hmfeder1 |

Great place to visit. Parking is difficult. Great for walking and views of the Palisades can't be beat!

By Michele L |

Wave Hill is 28 acres of lush and beautifully tended gardens and hiking trails overlooking the Palisades right on the Hudson River. There's a lovely terrace cafe, a fabulous visitor's center, an exciting contemporary art gallery and special programs for families each weekend. You can reach it by public transport easily. In the summer the garden stays open on certain Wednesday evenings with live music and dancing! There's really no place like it.

By Marciana P |

Great place! We went there several times, the restaurant is nice, the gardens are terrific and the view is amazing!

By grrprr |

We came on the recommendation of a family friend. We had high hopes.

Getting here is a journey. We opted to take a taxi, though we returned by Metro North taking advantage of the free shuttle.

The grounds are nice. Very walkable even for the impaired. There are various gardens that depending on the time of year can be more interesting than others. You must time your visit so you can take the garden tour. You will get a better appreciation for the history, and the tireless staff who maintain the gardens.

The cafe was a real disappointment. A panini with stale chips, oddly seasoned chicken tenders and two slushies- $35.

By JuancitoCaminador55 |

Great views, beautifully kept gardens, an art gallery displaying the work of established and up and coming artists, in short a treat to the senses. As a resident of the neighborhood I consider this jewel as my own backyard.

By MAtravelbug |

Our son was married at Wave Hill, which is a gorgeous public museum with incredibly beautiful gardens, a greenhouse and a gorgeous mansion which has been recently restored. The cocktail hour was held on the beautiful green with views of the Hudson River and the Pallisades in NJ.
The service provided by Wave Hill was excellent, along with the exclusive caterer they use. We were exceptionally fortunate as the weather was absolutely perfect. We have visited in winter, spring and summer, and each season has its beauty in the gardens.

Great place to walk around and have a snack or picnic. Nice way to spend a beautiful afternoon! Beautiful grounds and gardens.

By Lisa G |

My family and I love spending the day here. Bring a picnic or buy one on the grounds and spend a few hours exploring. Come with friends.

By Chip P |

Entrance fee is $8/adult and $4/senior.

Great place to relax and beautiful well maintained garden.

Also great spots for picnic, bring own food and has a nice cafe.

Definitely a must visit spot for folks in and around NYC

Wave Hill, nestled in the Riverdale section of the Bronx in New York, is a great park to spend your entire morning, afternoon or the whole day. The gardens are so beautiful and the views are so picturesque. I've seen flowers I've never seen before. I would recommend going to this place in the fall and spring. It would be amazing. Do not forget to bring your best camera because trust me you going to be taking a lot of pictures. It cost $8 to park inside and $8 per person admission. If you spend $40 in the gift shop they will refund your admission. They have picnic designated areas if you are bringing food, otherwise you can buy refeshments from Wave Hill House Cafe.

By TPM17 |

This place is heaven in the Bronx if you can believe it! What a hidden treasure that I hope and pray never goes away! They charge a fee for admission but on certain days and time it is free to all thanks to large donors. They have a small parking lot which is $8 for as long as you want to stay and there is an over flow lot that is free and provides a free shuttle to get you up and down the very steep hill. They have annual memberships so you can pay one fee and come and go as you please and which also allows you to have member only special perks!

By Sandy S |

Just a short drive from the Henry Hudson Parkway is this charming and peaceful retreat. We walked the grounds, from graveled paths to wooded trails, and admired the gardens and the lovely views of the Hudson River and George Washington Bridge. A real breath of fresh air (literal and figurative) so close to the urban bustle. An art gallery occupies one of the historic homes, with the cafe and meeting space in the other. Would love to return for lunch on the deck.

By Leda M |

Combines careful landscaping with a naturalized, lush look. Especially spectacular in May and june if you are looking for floral and fragrant abundance.

By Andrea L |

What an interesting day we spent touring Wave Hill. If you have an interest in gardens this offers a wonderfull look at the different perennials, annuals, bulbs, and shrubs all over looking the Hudson River. It is quiet and the staff will allow you to sit awhile and enjoy your surroundings.
Wave Hill House was built in 1843 by George Perkins and the property includes the Glyndor House. It was deeded to the City of New York by Perkins-Freeman estate.

I think that if you were to be married in the spring this would be the perfect location with it's many different "picture sites". The Pergola Overlook has a beautifull view of the Hudson River. The Uupper Pergolas has a view of the Monocot Garden adn Aquatic Garden allowing for some great picture ops. The Conservatory and Great Lawn also would work for weddings.

There are 28 acres and its has free Garden Tours on Sundays and Tuesdays. Admission is $8 for adults and 4 for seniors. On the grounds you will find clean restrooms, Ecology building, food service, gift shop and a Visitor Center where you can register for programs andthere is the Glyndor Gallery which has featuring contemporary art inspired by nature with free tours.

Wave Hill House is currently being restored for a Family Art Project, and a Cafe.

One of my fav places in NYC overall. Right in the Bx, this place is very peaceful and not crowded at all.

By marianc95 |

Who knew that such a lovely park existed in The Bronx?! Apparently the property was deeded to New York City back in 1960. Aside from a lovely array of trees, plants, and flowers which vary from season to season, Wave Hill boasts a superb view of the Hudson River and the Palisades. In addition to well-maintained grounds, there's a greenhouse, a gallery, a visitors center, and a main building where concerts and children's programs take place and where patrons can purchase a light lunch and (weather permitting) eat out on a terrace overlooking the Hudson. The acreage is not huge, but one can certainly spend a very pleasant full day at Wave Hill.

In the middle of Riverdale New York a hidden gem. Gardens and rolling hills. Beautiful view of the Hudson River. A lovely place to stroll, sit, and take in the sights, smells and sounds.

By Feenix17 |

I always find peace and serenity when I’m here. The views are spectacular and the grounds are so charming. Best kept secret.

By yismus |

Lovely garden. You can get there by car or via 1 train and then hop on the van that picks you up at the train station and drops you off at the garden.

By Michelle S |

Great views. Perfect place to sit and reflect. There are benches and chairs and nothing but scenic views of the Hudson River. They have some good events.

By Abe H |

Small garden. Quite. Great place to get away from the city life. Good place for kids to visit. Beautiful view of Hudson!

By monique l |

Wave Hill is a beautiful amazing garden overlooking the Hudson river where you can spend a day walking around, looking at art work and having coffee with friends

By LeahV80 |

I beautiful escape from the busy city. A great way to spend a Saturday or a Sunday afternoon. Beautiful views of the Hudson River.

By rsmrylugo |

I attended an awesome workshop and then had the opportunity to share the experiences with my class. My class was able to see the amazing view, check out the gardens and participate in a workshop geared for them.

By Nomychavez |

Stunning views and beautiful gardens!
Me and my family have enjoy this gem for few years now it’s absolutely beautiful any time of the year even when snowing! Views are amazing and gardens are beautiful. Highly recommend family activities specially if you are visiting with kids. Small restaurant is pricey but food is good and many organic options. There is not parking space for know but shuttle vans take you quickly to a near by parking lot. Overall every visit has been great for us

By wher2next |

This beautiful and compact place is ideal for a light lunch and an afternoon walk. We arrived late afternoon and there were fewer crowds. There are MANY spots for pictures throughout. If you are getting there my subway then their free shuttle, be sure to time your arrival at the subway station to coordinate with the shuttle. Otherwise you have to wait a long while for the next free shuttle.

By Angie W |

We loved the beautiful gardens here and highly recommend taking the Dead Botantists walking tour. It might only occur in October for Halloween but don't miss it if you can go. The guide takes you to flora and fauna and explains the history of who discovered it and how they met their untimely ends! The shuttle to/from the 1 train is super easy. I believe if you go in the morning it is usually free to enter vs. $8/person after 12pm. Get the yummy homemade apple pie and sit on the beautiful cafe patio. Also stock up on gorgeous cards and honey products in the store.

By Mike R. |

This place is a must if you're seeking peace and nature. It provides physical and mental relaxation. It has a beautiful view from one of the balconies. The reason I said it has potential is because it really could be better. It's a very picturesque place but it could be even more and attract more people by its beauty. If you want to spend a chill day here just; go bring some food or snacks and something to read or if you're with a couple just go there and talk to each other. Either way wave hill is a good place but could definitely be better! Oh, and just remember to bring money if you don't want to spend much! They provide a cafe but it's expensive!

By Louis G |

In Riverdale on Hudson with great views, this historic garden has great plantings and several historic buildings with nice displays. A number of historic figures have lived on this site

By Paintedgodess1 |

Very happy. I actually emailed Wave Hill yesterday to say I was coming there today and needed the parking lot address. Very helpful they got back to me quickly. We drove there today and lo and behold…… closed 1hr and 13min drive. I found a nice lady that lived in the neighborhood and she told me they do that sometimes. How inconvenient and disappointing!

By T G |

Wave Hill is a hidden gem. Breathtaking views of the Hudson River. Spectacular gardens and grounds. A perfect place for an afternoon stroll.

By Aragorn65 |

This is an excellent place for picnic or quite time. There is a sitting area, picnic area, restrooms, restaurant (open weekends only) and shop. In greenhouses so many flowers in blooming. The best view for Hudson River. Highly recommended.

By Bronxista |

Beautiful views from the Adirondack chairs scattered around the grounds. There's a covenient free shuttle that will pick up in front of the Burger King near the 242nd Street 1 train subway.
There's a great cafe and a gift shop that has some unique and interesting items. You can visit the greenhouse and take a hike around the grounds.

By lordiluv |

Great escape from the city. Wonderful view of the Hudson River. Beautiful flower exhibition of cacti

By Carolyn G |

We just moved to Riverdale for my job and every realtor we spoke with said we had to check out Wave Hill. We were not disappointed. We went over Labor Day weekend. The gardens were all gorgeous, the views over the Hudson were spectacular. Absolutely worth the $8 admission. You can walk as much as you'd like, or just hang out and enjoy the grounds. Looked like great food at the cafe too!

By BarbaraGee |

I go here whenever I need some calming. It is not as big as Botanical Gardens, but it is more serene! Less crowded and just as beautiful.

By Bwatsweeds |

Someone needs to privately message me to explain this place. I don't understand it! So we get there and they say we can't park in the car park unless we want to spend $8. However we can park in another car park a few minutes away and get a FREE shuttle there and back. Surely they can just have a cheaper car park and save money on employing shuttle drivers and shuttle cars!? The shuttle driver was really nice, and a top driver, though the stench of his burger made me hungry. We asked him what is Wave Hill!? And he said its a 20 acre estate with cafes, art galleries, mansions, walks and gardens. Someone needs to explain to this guy the difference between plural and singular, and the difference between acres and square foot!!! And arriving there you never want to hear your gf say "oh I remember this place, I went here with my prom date and took a video of him!".
It is really nice there but it is a genuine 1 hour activity and no more.

By Carol G |

This is a respite from the City with a convenient location.

By James T |

Explore the trails along the river, the cliffs and beautifully landscaped gardens...great gift shop and many special events.

By vjcg5 |

Beautiful Scenic Location! Lovely gardens both floral and herb. Situated with a great view of the Hudson River.

By Phillips3675 |

Truly beautiful spot w lovely gardens, two classic houses and a great view of the Hudson
Very peaceful very lovely

By YOLIENewYork |

I live within walking distance of Wave Hill and have enjoyed it many times over the years. It is a beautifully preserved estate for a nature walk, fabulous views of the Hudson River and the Palisades of NJ. They have a very nice restaurant to have a light lunch or snack and enjoy the view. On occasion, they have musical presentations, art exhibitions and other events. Check their website for events. They have these wonderful Adirondack chairs all over the property to sit and relax to take in the views, read a book or chat with a friend. No ball playing or skating allowed. It's a chill out place.

By theresa c |

Easy to get to from CT, just below Cross County Shopping Center, about 20 minutes south. The Hudson view, space, greenhouse, pond with unique water plants (including mosaic ones) and free weekend art for kids of all ages. Incredible art room, better than ones at museums. Saturday before noon is free admission otherwise $8 for adults and $8 for parking, tiny lot. Great, and a nice gift shop.

By Bobby44881 |

Wonderful gardens and conservatory. Free admittance on Tues and Sat. Pay $8 to park close or $0 to take the shuttle. Nice gift shop; quiet.

By Jack026 |

Wave Hill is a famous garden North of the City and certainly worth a visit. You can easily get a train from Grand Central and buy a package with your ticket that was incredibly inexpensive!! You cannot believe that in 20 minutes or so you are in this lovely rural setting with a wonderful little greenhouse and beautiful gardens. It is the perfect depressuring 2-3 hours away from New York! Go if you ever get a chance!

By Rutaxsiempre |

Lovely garden, specially in autumn...Take the subway to Van Cortland Park and get on the shuttle bus to Wave Hill ( check schedule)...Once you get here, you´ll feel overwhelmed by the beauty of this place...You´ll find amazing views of the Hudson River and even GW Bridge.....Very romantic, perfect place to relax with your partner!..There is also a trail throughout the Garden which I really enjoyed!!

By Ken B |

This is a great place to spend a leisurely afternoon strolling through the gardens and greenhouses, or just admiring the scenic views, with the George Washington Bridge silhouetted against the southern sky in the distance Guided walks are sometimes available, and there is also a gift shop and a cafe. Check the website for info on public transportation or driving directions.

By PeterDerrick |

With beautiful grounds overlooking the Hudson River and the New Jersey Palisades, this wondrous garden, with fantastic trees, is not to be missed. Also has good art exhibitions.

By Harriet M |

It is wonderful to walk in a leisurely manner and enjoy the beauty that surrounds me. I also went into their cafe and I had the greatest tasting lemonade so refreshing.

By Diane O |

Beautifully kept gardens. Spring flowers in bloom wonderful carpet of blue Scilla flowers. We were very disappointed that the café only offered hot drinks in paper cups. As Wave Hill prides itself on growing different plants we had expected a more environmentally friendly place where the café would use China or glass cups. Such a pity!

By Allan S |

Love coming here for the day. And listening to concerts or just having a picnic or dining out. With friends. Beautiful gardens . Come here and see for yourself

By Frank Irizarry |

Fantastic gardens overlooking the river in a secluded place in the Bronx. Worth a visit any time of the year but especially beautiful in the mid to late spring for the tulip display

By Vagenende |

This is my second time here - it is so very peaceful, and such a pleasure for the senses - the amazing views, scents, colors, varieties, sounds - even the taste of the food in the café can be good; and it awakens my sleeping passion for plants - so many varieties and varietals. A full sensory gala experience!

By MS06 |

What a beautiful spot, with wonderful views over the Hudson and the Pallisades. A number of different gardens to explore. Don't miss the Aquatic Garden (which used to be a swimming pool) with its gigantic water lily pods from the Amazon. It is $8 if you want to park in the grounds, but you get it back if you spend $40 in the gift shop. The day we were there it was honey weekend, and really cute seeing little kids dressed up as bumble bees after a craft wrokshop. Also had honey tasings in the gift shop

By tyagi |

Went on a Wednesday night for the concert series in the summer. Enjoyed strolling through some of the gardens. Wonderful cafe and gift shop.

By rala14 |

If you want a place to wander about undisturbed this is the place. The grounds and gardens are beautiful and the river views are so peaceful.

By RocklandMom1 |

Wavehill is a gem in the middle of the Bronx. It offers a historical estate that is both serene and peaceful. It is easy to forget you are in the Bronx. However, there is not that much to see at Wave Hill, which is the reason I rated it average. Go on Wednesday to get in for free.

By Passport590427 |

I love Wave Hill in the Spring, when the trees are competing to have the best blooms;
I love it in Fall, when the Autumn colors rival in firing hues;
I love it in Winter when all is white, clean, silent..
I like it in Summer too still gorgeous with full green trees & flowers.
I love the Winter garden, one side dedicated to tropical plants, the other one to cacti.
And I do love the golden fish pond, its mini frogs, and its nénuphars..
I have seen weddings there, been to concerts, eaten some tasty healthy food at the cafe,
shopped at the boutique for unique items, walked all around, never getting tired of its serenity & beauty.

By Uweekend Traveler.com |

We had an very relaxing afternoon at the wave hill. It was my moms birthday and there was no better place to think of taking her.
This place came as the number one choice as she loves flowers and nature. We go to see a good variety of plants and cactus flowers.. Very neat place to visit and relax and read you favorite book..
This place is not crowded at all and could be a perfect meet and greet or first date for your dear lover.
The place is beautiful all around specially the pond and the large lawn overlooking the river.. It's a great scape from the city and yet not so far. Prices are reasonable
We ate a very healthy meal at the cafe. Overall this place its a must visit..

By sesglbm |

The title tells it all. The views high above the Hudson make this a world-class destination, not to be missed. The combination of tranquility and beauty of the gardens is unsurpassed.

By jvh212 |

Wave Hill is an amazing place. It's botanical highlights include varied environments--a woodland, hilltop 'forest', a wildflower garden, a sun-drenched lilly pond, meadows, Hudson river vistas replete with sailboats and barges, and bird sanctuary, and much, much more. Now that Wave Hill House has reopened, it's even more spectacular. You can have a picnic or just melt into one of the Adirondack chairs sprinkled across the property, wander footpaths and gardens, or just soak up quiet and peace in a shaded pergola. It's free On Tuesdays! Take advantage!

By Barbara T |

I have always loved Wave Hill but have not been for a few years. This summer I have been back more than once to enjoy the new(ish) and breezy stone patio, the fresh food and iced coffee at the cafe, and the pleasures of sitting under some of the oldest trees in the Bronx. And although I come for the peace and quiet and the lovely view of the Hudson, I recently enjoyed an excellent short documentary film program and discussion in the main house. I'm also happy to see that so many young families with children are enjoying programs there on the weekend. Kudos always to the friendly and helpful staff, and congratulations on another successful summer. P.S. There is plenty of parking for bicycles.

By Elizabeth M |

When I lived in Manhattan, I visited Wave Hill at least once a year for the natural environment, occasional concerts, and the gardens. The walks are enchanting, particularly with views over to the Palisades in New Jersey. The main bulding, a former mansion, has been lovingly restored into attractive event space. At that time, the greenhouses were not open to the public; this may have changed.

By seanworc |

Wave Hill is a jewel-box beautiful garden and former home on an overlook in the northwest corner of the Bronx. The views of the Hudson River and the NJ Palisades are stunning. It is particularly resplendent in the fall when the fall foliage color flourishes. There are occasional exhibits in the house and there is a small cafe. If you are a fan of the TV show, Billions, one of the outdoor funeral scenes was shot at Wave Hill. Worth a visit if in the area. Not sure it is worth a trip in itself because it is small.
A hidden gem.( I have been here about 5 times.)

By Michael P |

It is one of the most tranquil places in the BX and is a great place to get some down time in a peaceful space. Food was pretty good too.

By saltesh |

Back in the neighborhood, parking and delightful buildings and lovely gardens. Right near Clositers on other side of highway. Easy to get to from NJ via GW Bridge, Spring and summer gardens lovely

By cavu0531 |

Beautiful gardens, views (Hudson) and greenhouse. Not a common destination - especially for tourists. But if you are in NYC for an extended time, and you are near, it is totally worth it if you like plants.

By Elizabeth D |

If you love outdoor life, castles and beautiful flowers - it’s for you! One little hint - Saturday free admission 10am -12 pm. I love this place any season is beautiful!

By Negrita680 |

Very beautiful, peaceful, a great place to walk, relax, get away from the bustle of the city and smell the flowers!

By dridr |

mostly locals in Riverdale know this beautiful location with view of the Palisades and lovely gardens. The mansion is lovely, used as a venue space. There are tranquil paths, well kept lawns, and a very peaceful atmosphere. Limited parking is available and it is a bit of a walk from the nearest bus stop. There are no nearby subway stops although MetroNorth Riverdale station is a formidable up hill walk away

By Cindy M |

If you've been holding your breath, hoping to find a special place to escape the pressure cooker that is Manhattan, take the A Train to Riverdale in the Bronx and visit Wave Hill. A shuttle will pick you up and bring you to the gates where you can purchase a ticket to spend the rest of the day wandering through the green houses, the gardens and the elegant mansions gracing twenty-eight acres overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades. We were there on a gorgeous, mid-September day. We tried out the views from various Adirondack chairs and benches on the sloping lawns and under the enormous shade trees. Many people who must have visited before brought sketch pads and easels, books and newspapers and snacks to share. Each grotto and garden entices, there are plenty of seats but the rules state "no blankets".We took close ups of the overblown flowers. We composed artsy photographs of the trellis with heavy green gourds. At two o'clock, we meandered to the patio behind the main house and thoroughly enjoyed a formal English tea. Advance reservation and prepayment of $26 per person not including gratuity is required, but it was so worthwhile. Probably the best high tea presentation I've experienced, with the possible exception of the Russian Tea Room in New York City. Mini versions of Croque Monsieur, curried chicken salad and smoked salmon Napoleon, assorted scones, petit fours, nuts, Devonshire cream, preserves, dates, grapes and dried apricots will delight you. For $10 more per person, you can include sparkling wine and strawberries and cream. After we'd stuffed ourselves, we did a little shopping in the elegant shop. I purchased local honey with sprigs of lavender in it, which gentrifies my jasmine tea at home. I also chose a honeysuckle scented soap and batiked cotton dinner napkins. Wave Hill does cultivate their own bees and honey, but they only offer it for sale at their fall Honey Weekend in early October when all things bee related are celebrated. Our daughter, who lives in Manhattan, took two friends to Wave Hill for the Honey Weekend and bought enough milkweed flavored honey to make a honey cake. We loved Wave Hill! After an afternoon of soaking up the gracious ambience, we took the shuttle to the train and watched the Hudson River flow past our window on the way back to the crazy Friday night Manhattan bustle. If you live in New York, or if you plan to visit, don't miss Wave Hill.

By anonj |

We were there on a perfect sunny morning. What a jewel! In addition to the rolling green lawns overlooking the Hudson, the gardens are exceptional in their design- this is not a typical botanical garden or collection of plants but more of a work of art. Marco Polo Stufano, the original designer, must've been a brilliant guy.

A fabulous escape from the crowds and commotion of Manhattan.

By Silverw0man |

Wave Hill is a lovely, historic setting, at the northwestern part of the Bronx, easily accessed by subway or train. The two houses on the property are filled with history, and one serves as an art gallery most of the year. It is, however, the gardens which are the most captivating part of thus attraction. Framed by a stunning view of the mighty Hudson River, many perennial flower beds are well-cared for, and put on an amazing year-round show for visitors. The gift shop is filled with well chosen art and crafts, along with local honey and jams, and seasonal gifts.
You won't be disappointed if you visit Wave Hill!

By Cassysj |

Beautiful hidden gem. You forget you are in the city. I took the 1 train to 242 street and then the free Wave Hill shuttle outside the Burger King. Thank heaves they have that shuttle it's five minutes in a car but over 20 minute walk. It was peaceful and some nice Adirondack chairs to relax in.

By linda g |

Our tour bus stopped here on the way to the NY Botanical Gardens. We were surprised to find a lovely garden setting with a beautiful view of the Hudson River. Take a tour with a volunteer guide and enjoy the gorgeous "artistic" plantings - chosen for color and texture, often in surprising combinations. Lots to look at and enjoy in a small area.

By lauraj3117 |

Been coming to Wave hill since I was a child with my grandparents. I took my husband here this summer and absolutely loved it. So many new additions since I been here years ago such as gift shop, cafe and water gardens. Only downfall never remember it being so busy years ago. The parking lot was full however the shuttle service was great.

By Meg F |

I love to go to Wave Hill any time of the year. I have taken art classes in the summer which took place outside. It is a beautiful day trip retreat for nature lovers.

By Mónica M |

Weather was perfect to walk around the gardens and admire the beautiful flaura. There are couple of gazebos and resting spots to seek shelter from the sun. Not sure if weekends are crowded but I enjoyed not having crowds trying to look at flowers at the same time I did. It felt as if I had the garden all to myself.

The cafe offers a variety of choices to eat and drink. You can eat indoors or outside with a beautiful view to garden. Glyndor Gallery has AVIFAUNA exhibit through June 24

By lubger |

I went there with my family just out of curiosity, and was simply stunned by that place. The landscapes, the views over the Hudson River, the layout - be-a-u-ti-ful.

Most importantly, this is a fairly compact grounds, so you can go there with little kids without reservations for the length of your walk. They have an [obnoxiously overpriced] cafe there - your average selection of chum and quite good coffee, with a terrace to enjoy it all outside. Also included is a mini-gallery hosting works by modern artists.

A thoroughly enjoyable visit. Please mind the limitations on car parking: it's hard to find a place on the outside, and on the inside, the number of parking slots is limited, and you need to pay $8 per car.

Oh, and don't forget to make a good use of your new NewYorker ID card - you can get a free annual membership with it.

Wave Hill is a perfect destination for a couple of hours of pretty gardens and a view of the Hudson River and the Palisades in NJ that will clear your head and brighten one's day.

By JodiFulgione |

Wave Hill has it all, beautiful views, historical meanderings, room for the kids to roam and, even, a place to get a bottled water and coffee.

Bring your most comfortable shoes as it is "hilly" and can get "chilly" by the Hudson.

Fall is a favorite time of the year but I love Wave Hill in the summer when the breeze off the Hudson cools one perfectly while the city below is steamy and hard on the eyes.

We all long to visit special spots that feel exclusive, elegant and enchanting.

Wave Hill does not disappoint.

Pretend, for just an afternoon, that this is your family's estate and bring along your favorite book of poetry and a blanket and read some poems aloud to a dear friend.

By Serenidad Q |

I brought my girls to one of their free Saturday art workshops a while back. We all had a great time making boats out of loose art supplies and seeing if they would float. I for one loved that Wavehill hosted these workshops free of cost! Afterwards, we hung around enjoying the scenery for a little while before heading home. I would definitely go again.

This is my first time visiting since I was a little kid. Peaceful place to alone I think.
My Elementary School used to take us there and we'd we learn how to waltz and do a few other kids activities.
This recent visit with my children was just okay. I will say the day we went, theyre wasn't any activities scheduled, so there wasn't much to do but walk around. But worth taking the trip you enjoy being around nature.

Wave hill is one of the most beautiful places in NYC. On top of that, the Sunday kids programs are fantastic. The summer concerts are lovely. This is one of my most favorite places. The cafe has great coffee and snacks too.

By Factnotfiction86 |

Wavehill did not disappoint. The views were stunning, the trees were in all of their fall foliage glory and even the coffee from the cafe was great.

I lived in the Bronx for 21 years and never visited before. The 28 acre estate has short hiking trails and on certain weekends activities for children under 7 . The manor houses have art work on display and many times small but very talented music ensembles. Check their web site for details. The day we visited the fall colors were close to peak and we had a very relaxing time roaming the grounds and visiting the green houses that to a lay person like me seemed very well cared for and nicely laid out with many different species of plants and fauna.
The down side was the entry fee, parking and food prices. You can picnic in designated areas but it still cost $8 to park and $16 for 2 seniors

By ETPhoneHome2328 |

I think this place is better for the native New Yorker as an attraction vs. someone who is just visiting needing to see it. Wave Hill is one of those peaceful places that lets you forget that you are in the . They have different attraction per season. I found it a very relaxing and beautiful place to visit when I needed to, the price is reasonable as well.

A secret of the west Bronx located in Riverdale. A beautiful, romantic and peaceful time in a place that overlooks the Hudson River. You'll enjoy it.

By RSL_10 |

This is a place for a leisurely afternoon alone or with family. Not "exciting", just places to stroll and rest, including large goldfish pond, greenhouse, herb garden, nature path. On weekends, great art activities for kids. Our 6 and 4 year old grandchildren love to visot.

By Christopher H |

You would never believe such a place exists just outside Manhattan. This is an ideal half day trip for any visit to NYC. The gardens are amazing and the overall location with the view of the Hudson River is impressive. I pleasant surprise is the Cafe, which offered very good food and reasonable prices. I would recommend Wave Hill as a lunch date location.

If you want to see several types of gardens, then Wave Hill is the place to be. There are also plenty of walking trails that show just how large the grounds are, and add tot he overall experience.

By UWSMom |

Nice place to spend a few hours. I used to go often but this spring and summer they don't have any food for sale. The restaurant is closed for another year or so for renovations. You can bring your own and eat at tables they provide, but you can't picnic. Parking is a hassle but worth the effort. You can pay to park or else take the bus to a nearby lot. My friends like the store but I think their stuff is expensive. They have really nice jewelry for sale. Go on Saturday or Tuesdays in the mornings and it is free to get in. Little kid art programs are great on the weekend.

By Karlpizza |

The entrance fee is cheaper than the NY Botanical Garden, but it's smaller. It's still very beautiful and a great place to photograph. They gave me a discount because I got there so late, which was nice of the staff.

Wonderful gardens, view of the Hudson, crafts for kids and adults, bee keeping workshops, recipes, and more. Lovely for photographs. Have been visiting for more then 20 years.

By Oliver S |

If you are in search of history, you won’t find it here. I have recently seen a note that you can see some of Bashford Dean’s armor collection and decided to give it a go. He was the first curator of Arms and Armor at the Metropolitan Museum and that’s where the rest of his collection ended. But he rented the house for a while and even convinced the then owner, the Perkins family, to let him built an impressive Armor Hall incorporating some recycled wood from the construction of the Lexington Avenue subway.

I had vague memories of a visit to Wave Hill some twenty plus years ago and pleasant visions of large sloping lawns, gardens and beautiful views on the Hudson River and Palissades were dancing in my head. So, a pleasant Saturday morning in October I got on Metro North and made the 25 minute trip to Riverdale. The museum runs a free shuttle from the Station to the Estate, the trip takes less than five minutes. Admission, while modest, is too much for what it is: the original house was built in 1843 by a prominent New York lawyer, it changed hands several times until William Henry Appleton (of publishing fame) restored it and transformed it into a Victorian Villa around 1870. A New York financier acquired it twenty five years later and added to the grounds by subsequent purchases of adjacent properties, transforming it into a very pleasant 28 acres estate with swimming pool, gardens, and most of all, gorgeous views.

Famous people rented the house, including the father of Teddy Roosevelt, Mark Twain and Arturo Toscanini in more recent times. Perkin’s daughter managed to remove all Victorian details from the house and it was finally left to he City of New York sometimes in the 60s. As often is the case, it lingered for a while, then went down and down.

A recent (2011) renovation is supposed to have done much for it, but I did not see anything I liked. Empty halls, plenty of offices, uncared for gardens. I don’t know if it was my luck, but every room and every building I entered had some unpleasant smell: not the same mind you, different but all of them unpleasant. The Café was the worst: stinky, crowded, disorganized, with food leftovers left on the tables, it was so sad to think that this was the former Dining Room of a magnificent house. Glyndor House hosted an exhibit of modern art for which I did not care at all. As for the armor, oh, yes, there was ONE KNIGHT’S ARMOR in a corner under the stairs.

Absolutely not worth it. For my money, I'd much rather go see Kykuit, John Rockefeller's Hudson estate, also a museum, currently operated by the Hudson Valley Historical Society.

Despite all the activity we have just outside our door, sometimes NY-ers fall into a rut, and need a change of pace too! Bird watching is NOT my thing, but a tour was being conducted at Wave Hill (2nd Sunday every month w/Gabriel) and I grabbed some friends and said why not? Car-less Manhattanite, it was really easy to get to (take the #1 train to 242nd St, and there is shuttle by Burger King 10 min past every hour) - and then...you don't feel like you are in NYC anymore. Lovely grounds, gardens, paths - views of the Palisades and modern Adirondack chairs from which to enjoy them. Wonderful, entertaining bird watching tour, that importantly gives you more of an appreciation for their interesting, unique nature - than on identifying them. Small cafe, serene art museum. Take the garden docent tour! Nice retreat from the City.

The Wave Hill Gardens came to be long after I graduated Manhattan College nearby. It was a pleasure to stroll the grounds and enjoy the formal and informal garden setting. The highlight was seeing a Giant Sequoia Redwood tree grown on the east coast let alone the BRONX. IT WAS A FASCINATING STRORY. I truly hope that in a few hundred years it grows to maturity and begins a grove of its own.

By Aabbady |

My friend suggested this place to watch and take some photo for the flowers. I drove in Bronx, when I thought I lost, the garden was there hard to find. I could believe how beautiful it is. It is from the time you walk in until the time you leave. I spent all day and I have to go back again to see everywhere. It is nice all shot at every corner and more you can see than most of other places in New York City

Wave Hill is a wonderful place to observe Greenhouses and their plantings from all over the world. The grounds are nestled directly parallel to the Hudson River which makes the scenery marvelous. There are benches located strategically where one can meditate on the majestic Hudson River, and the Palisade Cliffs. There is a food concession selling fresh eats,i.e.: sandwiches, salada, desserts,beer/wine, coffee and tea.One can tour the different houses on the property that sometimes have artistic exhibitions. Wave Hill is a hidden jewel that is worth the visit.Great day trip.Francisco🍷

Beautiful setting, great gardens, and a lovely gift shop. Trails through the woods, historical buildings, an art gallery ; it's a NY treasure, being kept alive & beautified.

By GreenJade123 |

I have visited many times. I love the place.

It is a "boutique" botanical garden. The views from the Hudson River are great. Also there is an art gallery with interesting work and a shop where you can buy pretty gifts.

If you have kids attend the art classes on the weekends. My kids loved them!

By ArmyNurseElPaso_TX |

A definite gem. Lots of grounds and flora. Beautiful views of the Hudson River. Very nice staff. Cute gift shop. A beautiful setting.

By Laurel31 |

This is easily overlooked, overshadowed by it's better known cousins, the Bronx Botannical Garden and the Zoo, but it's truly a little gem. Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood, it's the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the view of the Palisades across the banks of the Hudson River. I recommend the garden tour, about 1.5 miles around the entire estate, part history, part botannicals led by a very knowledgeable and passionate docent. There are hidden coppolas, 3 historic homes and art exhibits. Sit outisde afterwards at the cafe or overlooking the water. Enjoy!

The perfect place for an afternoon of relaxation. Wide lawns, comfortable chairs and a great view of the Hudson. Bring your favorite book sit and enjoy.

By Sharon M |

Well, it's not really hidden- you can reach it by subway but it isn't well advertised. What an incredible garden with views of the Hudson River and the Pallisades. The guides are volunteers but knowledgeable and the garden itself is so peaceful and beautiful you can forget the city. There is also a charming house on the property which has art exhibitions. We saw a beautiful juried show of botanical illustrations. There are plants for sale at the visitors center at very reasonable prices and other delightful mementos of your visit. I bought vegetable seeds which will be a terrific reminder of my visit.

Wave Hill is a few short blocks away from my apartment, and my husband and I go there almost every Saturday (and we're in our early 20's!). It is so relaxing and beautiful. They have interesting art installations and constantly changing flowers. Their gift shop also has a lot of specialty items which make great gifts. This is THE PLACE to go for autumnal photo shoots. The views of new jersey are breathtaking. Admission is free on Saturday mornings until 12pm.

Visited this garden in the summer of 2020, the beautiful, peaceful grounds were such a treat in the middle of the pandemic. Flowers, the hiking trail and views of the Hudson are amazing.

By Faye L |

Wave Hill, in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, is not the most accessible place, but it's worth the trip. It's incredibly beautiful with views of the Hudson River and the New Jersey Palisades. The grounds are groomed and beautiful with extensive plantings, flowers, gardens, sitting areas, and stately historic residences that now house art and serve as a venue for cultural events. There are very comfortable, stylized Adirondack chairs into which it's great to collapse with a book and relax. There's also a nice little cafe for snacks and lunch with indoor and outdoor seating, and a gift shop which sells items that are not the usual tacky gift shop fare. Parking is in a small lot, on the street, and on weekends, at a nearby independent school. If you're using public transportation, it will require a bus from the subway. Go there and indulge.

By TennisStar602 |

I came to Wave Hill in early December of 2020. People wore masks here during the coronavirus pandemic, which I thought was definitely an asset. There was free admission on Thursday, so I was really impressed with that price factor. There was free parallel parking on the street just a five (5) minute walk from the garden. I liked the hiking trails and the outdoor gardens. There were good views of the Palisades in New Jersey and the George Washington Bridge. Please be careful where you step as I thought that some of the surfaces can be difficult to walk.

By LAKYH |

This hidden gem is located in the five boroughs, but not known to many. I myself did not know about it till recently. The idea of just green grass and flower gardens if foreign for the ones living in NYC. So, having a spot not far out of the city is great!!

What I think allows for this place to so quiet, is the fee.

By ReadyToTravelYUL |

We visited as part of a tour of New York City and this came as a big surprise. We certainly did not expect such a beautiful tranquil spot with a lovely old mansion and accessory buildings overlooking the Hudson so close to the city. The gardens were well kept, and we spent a relaxing half hour on the terrace of the coffee shop enjoying the view.

By arissalovesart |

One of the most charming, peaceful, and overall lovely places in NYC. The grounds are just big enough to explore and always see something new but also small and manageable. My sister in law and I got some lovely photos with the flowers. We packed a picnic basket and ate at the outdoor table area before going into the gardens. The views of the Hudson River overlooking the Palisades across and truly inspiring! The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We also enjoyed the art about the environment in one of the mansions on site. We can't wait to go back!

By Laura K |

This little gem is tucked away in a residential area which keeps it off the radar from other attractions. It is well worth the effort to find it! There are numerous paths through woods and gardens with plenty of green space for kids to run around in the fresh air, too. The sweeping views of the Hudson and across to the Palisades provide a meditative setting for reflection and relaxation. Don't miss the museum and vegetable garden adjacent to it. Take note of specific rules and guidelines about cell phone use, no pets allowed, and other expectations for behavior. These guidelines are important for maintaining the peaceful atmosphere which allows all visitors to fully enjoy this special place.

My wife and I make it a point at least once a year to get to Wave Hill. It's not only for the beautiful plantings and greenhouses but also for the view of the Hudson River and the Palisades. From the perennial plantings to the shrubs and trees the 26 relaxing acres are arranged in a beautifully pleasing way. Anytime is good to visit but mid-April to mid-May offers a huge amount of blooming plants, our favorite time to go.

If NYBG is the getaway, hen Wave Hill is he hideaway. 18 acres is the perfect size to fully explore in one day. Or you can tuck yourself into one of the collections with a good book and enjoy the serenity. A part of me wanted to give this Garden a bad review just to keep tourists away and have it all to myself, but that would be a d move. Take public transportation bcs the parking is at a premium.

By michael g |

Wave Hill is a public park that encompasses two large estates. The homes are open and are nice, but the reason to come is for the landscaping. The entire campus is meticulously laid out to entertain the senses: expertly trimmed trees framing views of the George Washington Bridge, the Palisades or the Hudson River, an allee of scented shrubs that comes alive for a few weeks a year, the burbling of a koi pond blooming with aquatic plants. Set-piece gardens offer mood-specific vignettes: a gnarly twig bench in a gazebo amid a tangle of evergreen shrubs offers a spot favored by couples holding hands; a shade garden with a small mosaic medallion set in the grass is perfect for taking a nap; broad lawns for families to lounge [no picnicking or ball-tossing, except on designated days, alas].

The Wave Hill House runs great youth art programs integrating the natural surroundings, perfect for younger kids. The recently restored house is beautiful, and very significant historically, with many famous residents and visitors. The other big house, Glyndor, is a fairly pedstrian neo-Georgian manse. It is used for art exhibits, some good some not.

When we moved to dowdy, un-hip Riverdale from the much cooler Park Slope, much mourning set in. It was the discovery of Wave Hill, its grace, elegance, joy, and beauty, that soothed that adjustment. We have been in Riverdale now for fifteen years, and it has grown on us - no doubt we have become un-hip - but we still love, and often visit, Wave Hill.

By Citidweller13 |

was there in late June 2013 and still cant forget it. the main garden was in full bloom, the variety of plants was enormous, and every plant looked its best. a group of volunteers (some not so polite!) was weeding and taking care of the garden and deigned to answer a question, but i didnt let their attitude destroy the mood. Had to miss the 2014 June visit but will make every effort to go in 2015. there are also shade gardens, elevated gardens, hillside gardens etc. worth spending the whole day.

By fancy_ams |

The baby sister garden to NYBG. It's in a great area of the city so it's very nice and quiet, their garden is small but beautiful especially with the great view of the Hudson River. They also have a nice art gallery and the Wave Hill House museum to visit.

My wife recommended this place for me as teacher. On my day off I took my camera and headed there. I left home from Wave Hill very happy for what I see. It was nice day, nice view, a lots of knowledge, nice staff, good food in the cafeteria, great cup of coffee. All the aspect was in wonderful to make happy at the end of the day. I posted some of my photo to share with everyone.

By bek822 |

We love the Sunday morning art project for kids at wave hill. It usually has to do with nature, and the kids really enjoy the beautiful creative space provided. They also love to treck through the garden on the way to the art center. Watch out for windy days though, you may get blown away! The garden itself is amazing, with great views of the the Hudson River and Palisades. The parking is limited, so take the Metro North to the Riverdale Station and the wave hill van will meet you. If you drive, there is a free satellite parking lot on the weekend at the school next door. Parking in the main lot is not free, but you get parking vouchers if become a member.

Fascinating gardens and green houses, tremendous history of conservationist history and beloved guests.
I first went there to see about the famous Beech trees ... I was somewhat prouder that my own Beech is incredibly larger than theirs, being about 400 years old. Passing kids have called mine the "Winnie-the-Poo" tree....still, I only have one they have many of these absolutely gorgeous specimens, and that's only a part of the place's wondrous story.

By Maria R |

Just lovely! Beautiful views of the Hudson, very peaceful. Can be difficult to park. Bring a picnic or you can also enjoy the cafe on site - a little pricey but quality food.

We enjoyed a winter visit to Wave Hill and pretty view of the river. Since it is a bit of a trek for us, I'm not sure I would go back any time soon. What a delight to find this beautiful spot overlooking the Hudson River just minutes from the center of Manhattan. Located in Riverdale, in the Bronx, Wave HIll has beautiful gardens and green houses. It has a lovely cafe for a quick bite. My friend and I had tea and a light snack overlooking the Hudson River. There is a large lawn with plenty of room for children to run and play. Families can enjoy tours and special projects on weekends for children. It is a real gem, worth visiting if you want a quick getaway from the business and harried life of the city.

I've been here only once so far but this place is really gorgeous. It has a great view of the Palisades. My wife, two daughters(7 and 9), and I walked around most of the place in a couple of hours at a leisurely pace. We sat on one of the benches while the girls ran around in the grass bare footed at one of their many sitting areas. We even took a petite walk along a small wooded path on the outskirts of the garden. There were also some really romantic spots there too. All in all we had a good time and look forward to join again soon.

By invertpaleo |

Wave Hill is, to my mind, the most beautiful place in New York City. The views across the Hudson River to the Palisades are breathtaking. And, if you are a serious gardener, this place will blow your mind -- you will constantly be coming across fascinating plants that you have never seen before.

Wave Hill is extremely peaceful, and is a very restful and soothing place to be. Surprisingly, in the winter Wave Hill is just as gorgeous as it is at other times of year. The gardens are designed to be beautiful at every time of year. There is always something that is in flower, even in December and January, and not only in the greenhouses. The gardens are really lovely in the snow.

If you want to warm up, there is one building that is a very nice art gallery, and then of course the elegant main house itself, which was renovated last year. The main house has a cafe with a brand new food service, offering a good choice of healthy foods if you need to sit down and have a little something to eat.

I really enjoy Wave Hill and I am a member; I live in Manhattan and I visit there often via the express bus.

By JimmyM10465 |

Went there and visited the place with friends several times a couple years agao and it is a place of tranquility and good place to stroll and relax.I am sure there more to it than what I saw but we only were there a brief period each time so probably need to go visit it again to see what it can really offer us.

By Shaaybo |

Just 25 minutes from Grand Central Terminal or accessible via the No. 1 Subway line (shuttle bus takes you for free from both the subway and Metro-North stations), as soon as you're in here you might as well be 50 miles up the Hudson Valley. Reminded me very much of Boscobel though with much more of an emphasis on he gardens (the big house is currently under renovation).

Beautiful grounds and gardens, great view over the Hudson and Pallisades with the GW Bridge to the south to remind you just how close to Manhattan you actually remain.

Compact and manageable with kids, there are half a dozen individual small gardens, some woodland walks, an art gallery, shop, and dozens of traditional chairs dotted around when you want to take he weight off.

Terrific customer care. The shuttle was not there to meet out train and when we called, they were ultra-apologetic and sent another for us immediately.

Only downside was that their cafe is closed right now (not sure why) so the only food is a not too terrific food truck.

The Metro-North package for two adults and a child was just $35.50 - includes return fare form Grand Central and admission to Wave Hill.

Well worth a trip.

We always had a family membership at the Bronx Zoo and my kids loved it. We tried the Botanical gardens and it was too restrictive. We can walk to Wave Hill and the kids can run around. We bring bagels and the Times on Sunday. Or we eat there. The Saturday art class is great for the kids and free. The views are amazing.

I hadn't been to Wave Hill in 10+ years and I forgot just how wonderful it is until I recently went back with my husband. It's a quiet escape from the typical NYC excursions, and at just an $8 entrance fee, you'll feel like you really got your money's worth. Plus if you park down the street at the school, they don't charge you for parking and they offer a free shuttle!

By scouternurse |

You can enjoy nature's life during the whole year ie, flower blossom in spring and white world in winter time. Whenever you visit the Wave Hill, you feel the very precious time of the season at any time of the year.
I recommend you invite friends and family on a tea time. In addition, there are so many interesting classes and concerts during the year. It is very easy to access from the city using subway or bus.

In all honesty, I had never heard of this 28 acre garden way up in the Bronx looking over the Hudson River to the Palisades in New Jersey. It seemed a well-kept secret. We were part of a 35 person garden tour of NYC and Wave Hill was one of 5 places we visited over 4 days. I think I enjoyed this garden for the solitude and the very clever landscape architecture that lent elegance and beauty to grounds. There are two large houses on the property as well; one that is an art gallery and another that offers a cafe with outdoor or indoor seating. The various garden "rooms" are the true focus however. There was no sense of cramped overfilled beds like was seen in some other gardens. Rather, each different space was widely separated from others by expansive lawns that gave you time to digest each space as you moved to another. Very remote with limited parking, one is well-advised to arrive early especially on a sunny weekend. I'm glad that I just saw OttoVonMismark's comment about shuttles and the like which will be useful when we go back on our own in the future.

Just discovered Wave Hill Gardens in the Bronx. This is a lovely little park, which previously was part of an estate. It has expansive views of the Hudson and the palisades, beautiful gardens, a romantic pond and a great lawn with chairs where one can relax and read. Its definitely a worthwhile place to spend a leisurely afternoon.

By Andrew M |

make sure to allocate several hours as YOU WILL WANT to make a complete walk of the entire gardens, greenhouses and paths. just so much native plants, flowers, trees, and on and on. do half, making sure to sit on many of the specially designed benches of stone and wood, then go to the cafe for a quick energy boost to do the 2nd half. i wouldnt want to name any special plants etc as that would ignore the ones i miss....and there are thousands. best part might be going home and then stopping at a nursery to TRY and add a piece of what you absorbed at this hidden gem in your own home!!! and at this riverdale location you miss any traffic digesting at the henry hudson bridge-thats a bonus. z"l ruth schapira

Very peace filled day there on Thursday; little crowd; gorgeous views; wonderfully maintained gardens; like the art display in one building and the small cafe was wonderful in its offerings...

the gardening staff were most friendly when I would stop them from their jobs to ask questions.

we were able to park there too(although costly at $13 non member price; otherwise, it is at the end of a narrow little road; would not trust finding a parking spot on busy days...then, one would have to use public transportation..

a very nice asset to a quiet part of the Bronx...don't miss it!

Wave Hill is probably one of the most unique sites in New York City. It is a beautiful estate that became a public place with an art museum, fantastic gardens, and great activities for children. It overlooks the Hudson River with the New Jersey Palisades on the opposite shore. When I've taken people there in the past they could not believe they were in New York City let alone The Bronx. Admission is quite affordable, and it is easily accessible via of railroad, or mass transit using train and bus service. The surrounding neighborhood - Riverdale - is probably the most unique in NYC with beautiful estates on old streets. So in addition to Wave Hill walk around the Riverdale street.

Nice peaceful place if you need to escape Manhattan and its tumult. Follow the woodland trails for a more ‘rustic’ experience, even cool on rainy days !

By Susan B |

Late September in a heat wave is not when a garden looks it's best but Wave Hill is amazing even then. This is much smaller than NY Botanical Garden but makes up for that with intensive planting in unusual plant combinations. A gem of a garden with a great overlook of the Hudson River. Very peaceful. Some parking at the garden with overflow parking with shuttle available. Simple lunch on the terrace was tasty and the entry cost is very reasonable.

By Glory316 |

If you are ever in the Riverdale area....a must see. They have beautiful gardens, a nice restaurant and souvenir store. It's breathtaking during the spring....overlooks the Hudson. For the creative, a great place to sit, paint and write poetry.

By Bhajji |

A sunny day in mid spring was a delightful time to take a walk here
Although the parking was offsite as the park lot was full, they accommodated for it with a shuttle service.
It was a terrific walk among new and mature plants, old and specimen trees and a garden that overlooks the Hudson.

By Ana C |

It's a nice place to walk and talk enjoy the scenery and just breath and take a timeout from the world.

By Walt L |

This is a place off the beaten path that shouldn't be missed by nature lovers. Set in a serene hillside, just north of NYC overlooking the Hudson River, this is a great place to spend an afternoon.

By Beth N |

The grounds are well maintained, and the gardens are beautiful. I especially enjoyed the wild garden and the greenhouses with the smaller, potted cactus. The woodland trail is pleasant as well, and you can see the Hudson River from several lookouts. When you want a peaceful oasis, this is a nice place to come and relax. Saturday mornings are free before noon. Tuesday's are free as well. Otherwise the entrance fee is $8. There is a free shuttle bus to/from the number 1 train and the Metro North stop.

By LyRae |

It's a beautiful & tranquil place. It has well manicured gardens & lawns. Beautiful views of the Hudson river & Palisades. It's the Bronx best kept secret.

By Alexandra |

Beautiful gardens and walkways along the Hudson River. Small cafe but gorgeous patio for lounging. Great views.

By David B |

Mothers Day excursion from Brooklyn, NY, it was only about 30 minutes to get there after picking up food for a picnic on the North lawn.

We were able to park at an elementary school and get shuttled back and forth. Place was busy of course with families.

A real nice place to visit the outdoors. Take the whole family!!!

By Patrick Q |

One sunny afternoon decided to do a family outing at Wave Hill. The scenic views of the Hudson River are spectacular. The grounds were perfectly manicured. I would recommend even taking a book with you as they have nice benches and chairs to relax enjoy a beautiful day. We also had friends stay with us and recommended they visit there and they enjoyed it as well.

By Alexander R |

Nice place for a day of relaxing, reading a book or just enjoying the view. They have a nice venue for meetings or gatherings. A tour of the facility is available.

By RHS1946 |

This visit was late May with several family members on a recent trip to upstate NY. Cousins said this was a "must visit" if we were already going down to The MET Cloisters and we would be close enough to view both worthy destinations. It was quite warm but comfortable walking through the gardens. An enormous and stately Beech tree was the first to catch my eye. A great photo shoot opportunity! Hand crafted chairs akin to a scaled down Art Craft styled Adirondack chair were scattered under trees and a bench under a formal columned overlook for viewing gave beautiful resting spots. There are buildings with events and special exhibits but we opted for viewing outside on this trip. A small gift shop has a variety of things to take home and some exquisite jewelry. The cafe is completely organic and using sustainable tableware. Plantings and trees were everywhere as well as particular gardens; herb garden, aquatic garden. I saw the most magnificent peonies I have ever seen. For a peaceful, serene space in the day visit Wave Hill!

By italotrip |

Very well kept and wonderful for a peaceful, relaxing day to take in the views of the Hudson and Palisades.

By riossant |

It’s a beautiful place, my job it’s close to Wavehill, and during my first visit, I was so surprised that this place was so close to me and so beautiful. Landscape, the gardens and the architecture are amazing- a must see.

By julie248 |

I had heard about this place for so many years that I expected rolling lawns and vast open spaces... and it's not like that. It's a beautiful home (that you can't really go inside except for scheduled events or to use the bathroom or cafe) with gardens and grounds overlooking the Hudson River and NJ Palisades. But once other people show up, there is no solitude or finding a quiet corner, because it's just not that big. There is a stroll through a wooded path and you can walk through the gardens. It's definitely beautiful. But not the kind of place I'd go back to spend time. However, I will say there seemed to be plenty of parents with young kinds, so maybe it's a convenient place to let kids run around in the grass, and it also seemed like they had some kids programming or art things, so perhaps I'm just not the target repeat guest for Wave Hill!

By Lisa Z |

I had the pleasure of attending a wedding at Wave Hill. The grounds are breathtaking. The food was amazing. The service was top notch. There was not a detail missed. A great wedding venue to say the least!

By anorth52 |

Short hop on the metro north from grand Central, beautiful landscape and great views across the Hudson Valley. There's a free shuttle service that picks you up from Riverdale station.

By M D |

If you want to see the Hudson River and uninterrupted sky views head up the the Bronx, or Riverdale as it is commonly known and visit Wave Hill. It is like NYC like you never seen. A bit of an oasis in an otherwise overly crowded city. People in the Bronx have known it for years.

By Andrea F |

Great views of the Hudson and walking in the gardens was very relaxing. A good escape from the city. Looking forward to checking out their events and returning.

By Jerry H |

From the unique arts display in one of the buildings, to the outstanding floral displays, to the relaxing water views from the plentiful Adirondack chair, Wave Hill is worth a visit. There is a restaurant, but I did not try it. Pick a sunny day and relax at this oasis.

By JB789 |

Pleasant getaway from the congestion, noise and traffic of the city. Beautiful river views and nice hikes. Cafeteria food is a bit pricey, as is to be expected, but offers good hot entrees. Free shuttle available to/from the Metro-North station, but please tip your driver!

By Susan G |

Definitely a floral oasis in the Bronx on the Hudson River. Easy to walk around. Had a sandwich and drink as we overlooked the river and the George Washington Bridge. Beautiful.

By Kathy V |

Wave Hill is one of the country's best botanical gardens, with an active program of family activities, on a spectacular site overlooking the Hudson River to the Palisades. You would never know you are in the Bronx, in a corner with no tall buildings in sight. It is easy to get there by Metro North and Wave Hill runs a shuttle from the train. This is so worthwhile!

By Shappy |

Went on Saturday morning, didn't even have to pay admission before noon, only had to pay for parking. There is an option for taking a parking shuttle. What a view of the Hudson Riven, especially with autumn leaves. The cafeteria there is excellent, organic fresh foods. Best chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies ever! Beautiful adjacent park.

By SyJ J |

An oasis of peace, solitude, calm, joyful experiential adventures strategically placed in one of the best kept secrets in New York City. It is an opportunity to commune with nature, reflect and embrace a meticulously manicured landscape that allows one to dream, meander hallowed grounds (walk ON THE GRASS) and be greeted by WH personnel who are professional, friendly and have an allegiance to natural beauty in the midst of active urbana. As a retired educator, my friend and I were admitted free and because we spent a certain amount in the book store, parking was also free, but the excursion was and would have been worth whatever the charge was or would have been.

By clayt0np |

Wave Hill takes a bit of effort to get to, but it's worth it if you love flowers, gardens, and trees. Take the 1 subway to 242nd, and catch a shuttle to the park. We found the place to be beautifully laid-out. There are several flower gardens with paths that wind through and between them. They are designed so that each one is hidden from the others. There is also a nice woodland path. The plants and trees are well-marked for anyone interested in what they are. We also saw a pair of Baltimore Orioles starting a nest. The whole place is very quiet and restful with extremely comfortable wooden chairs to relax and enjoy the view. My wife and I also ate in the cafe and found the food extremely good. She had a beet burger, and I had grilled salmon on a quinoa/vegetable bed. Very yummy, and what a treat to eat it outside on the terrace surrounded by beauty and the nothing but the sounds of birds. Admission is quite reasonable.

By Margaret G |

I've been to Wave Hill a few hundred times. It is in North Riverdale, in the most northern part of the Bronx. It never feels really overwhelmed with visitors, which is part of its incredibly restful appeal. A former estate, Wave Hill is now a public garden, open to the public for an admission fee. There's a big lawn to relax on and watch the Hudson River roll by. There are beautiful gardens and a small but interesting greenhouse. There's a lovely fish pond surrounded by plants and benches. There's a lovely cafe, with seating overloooking the Hudson. There's always one or two art exhibits. On weekends, there's a wonderful art making workshop to bring the kids to. It's definitely worth a trip.

By Perry G |

Totally great place to visit. We took my mom who is 84 and difficulty walking. It was perfect for her, she got to see so much, so many flowers, and cacti and other beautiful sites. The gift shop is super as well, not expensive and lots to offer. Great day trip from NYC or anywhere. Definitely worth making the trip.

By Louis G |

wave hill is amazing set of gardens and house where a number of historic people lived, including Mark Twain. It is a TR era estate

By NewYorkCityEscapee |

An oasis in the Bronx. A Gem! Well worth the trip! At it's best in the early spring. An now a cafe has been added. Come early for that.

By Dante-Donna |

Our trip was grand, this place is cute with tons of charm, well worth the trip and right in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, Friendly staff and awesome views. Enjoy....

By Nancy S |

I visited Wave Hill for the first time recently and am so glad I did. It is a beautiful garden with a majestic view of the Hudson. And they have a lovely cafe with outdoor seating for a welcome and delicious respite!

By neilepi |

Beautifully situated on the Hudson with very nice views of the Palisades. Nice gardens with lots of seating to relax and enjoy the place. Galleries with some interesting and unusual modern art exhibits and an excellent shop.

By Cindy H |

This was located by the Hudson River. The view was great, but it was hard to see what else was there. I did see the green houses and rolling hills. I know there was more here, but I just couldn't find it. Don't bother with the gift shop. It offers prices that aren't affordable to most people.

By Juliet B |

Perfect spot to meet with friends and enjoy the view and friendly conversation. Perfect place for a stroll down a hillside looking off into the distance at the Hudson River, while appreciating the flowers at your fingertips. Perfect place to ponder the lush lily pond as the frogs and gold fish lazily move in the water. Good spot for tea with your friends and family, or a healthy meal on the veranda. Don't forget the art exhibits at the Wave Hill House. Is this a preview of heaven?

By TourGuideTom2014 |

My wife and I have opted to take one day "stay-cations" around NYC this year. (btw - highly recommended) On Sept. 15 we visited Wave Hill in The Bronx and left refreshed and renewed. The houses are beautiful but the gardens are extraordinary! They are extensive and varied and hold the beauty you would expect from a great garden, but also some special surprises in layout and "horticultural" special effects. But the setting is unique in all NYC - the beautiful property is perched very high above The Mighty Hudson River with truly breathtaking views of The Hudson River Palisades across the river. There is no way to adequately describe the view - it has to be seen to be believed. From the great houses, the beautiful gardens and grounds to the extraordinary views - Wave Hill is a NYC treasure hiding in plain sight! We'll go back in each season.

By JDW952 |

We've been several times, most recently for a wedding, which was done in grand style. The caterer, presumably connected to Wave Hill, was one of the best we've ever experienced at a wedding.

By Joyce S |

The winter is not the best time to view because so many trees are bare but if you like cold weather it is still nice
peaceful serene scene! The views of the Hudson are just as magnanimous as always! You will enjoy it just the same!

By V M |

While I agree that the admission is a bit high, I believe it is why the grounds are so well kept and free of trash. If you have a CUNY ID you can get in for a discounted price so check to see if your school ID will work for a discount.

We went in the Spring and there were two buildings under construction and there was a food truck but mostly we just were able to walk around outside. We did go inside a greenhouse. This place has the feel of a secret garden and it's a wonderful place to walk and just forget you're in the city.

I like that they have several benches for the elderly to sit and enjoy the landscapes. It's quite romantic and makes you hopeful that you and the one you love will spend afternoons in your retirement years side by side on a park bench enjoying the beauty of nature.

By Mildred G |

So many Beautiful pieces of Culture n History! Lots to do there especially Arts n Crafts Classes. Musical events there too!

By David R |

The Bronx is always one of my favourite places to spend time in when visiting NY. I love it's parks and historic houses. I'd heard of Wave Hill and seen photos online but this was my first time visiting. Typically these places won't look their best in December but as soon as we entered the gardens we were blown away by the view. It doesn't feel like you are in the city anymore. Despite the cold weather we had a lovely walk around the gardens and some delicious hot chocolate in the cafe. It might not seem expansive at first but you could spend all day just trying out the different trails.

My one and only complaint is that I would have liked to have seen more in the house itself on it's history and the families who once called it home. It would also be nice if the shuttle bus ran more regularly but it's not that much of a walk to the nearest bus stop

By Travs |

Good for a few hours respite from the noise of the city. Pleasant grounds to just sit and read. There are art exhibits in addition to the plantings

By Jacqueline E |

This is worth going if you love the outdoors and like going to different parks. They have a food truck on the premises typically outdoor eats so dress appropriately. They have a greenhouse and grounds for you to walk on and explore. I prefer this spot in the spring summer and fall but I’m not a lover of it in the winter time. It’s well hidden if you don’t know New York in the back of a residential neighborhood but getting there is beautiful.

By vasile123 |

This peaceful garden with great views is also home to many species of plants and trees. Get a walk with a botanist ( check their schedule). We understood much more and enjoyed it better when we knew the stories, history. You can bring a picnic and spend a beautiful, peaceful day .

By EGFlores |

Wave Hill offers lush gardens, hidden walking paths with charming pergolas, a koi pond and lots of nooks and crannies to explore. There is an art gallery and weekly cultural events. In the summer, ou can sit on the grass and listen to world music during Sunset Wednesdays. In the fall, it's a wonderful way to enjoy the changing foliage.

By Rena Matison G |

We love the views, the walking, the gardens are among the best we have ever seen! The gift shop has good selections for presents, for kids and for gardening.

By RuthRogersClausen |

Don't pass up a visit to this wonderful garden with fantastic views of the palisades across the Hudson River. Very fine collection of garden plants and many of collector's status. Programs for kids and adults and a good Gift Shop with unusual items. Don't pass this up if you are interested in gardens and visiting NYC

By Emz M |

With a background in early childhood education, I highly recommend this program to families. It is well organized, the staff looks excited to be there, and even when it's busy, visitors seem calm and engaged. I have participated in this program a few times and they provide me with a lot of great ideas to use in teaching and at home with my daughter. They also promote literacy by incorporating books.

Gorgeous vistas of the Hudson. Many plants and trees. So peaceful. Smaller and less expensive than NYBotanical Garden.

By sweltwoman |

Wave Hill has gardens and grounds that are wonderfully maintained. Hard to believe we are in NYC. Lovely cafe, reasonably priced. Views of the Hudson. Hard to get here by public transportation.

By Abubacarr |

I enjoy how you're still in New York City, but yet, it feels as if you aren't. You'll be amazed by the views, history and the atmosphere. Once you step foot on the grounds you won't want to leave. I highly recommend visiting the aquatic garden and the wave hill house... Most importantly, there is a big hall that goes by the name of "Armor Hall", it's a must see. Also don't forget to bring a camera... Enjoy!

By Katlyn R |

I went with my boyfriend and had a relaxig time the gardens where beutiful and every peaceful. There was an lot of art mixed in as well

By dumptrumptoday |

Wave Hill is one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever visited. Every season is gorgeous, but spring is perhaps my favorite

By Gillette18041 |

A small botanical garden but we'll worth a visit. Concerts on summer Wednesdays with a beautiful view of the Hudson. Go at sunset

By Carol S |

Wave Hill is perfect for an afternoon getaway for relaxing peace and quiet. After eating lunch at nearby Liebman"s Deli, we toured the grounds which included a small art gallery, awe inspiring views and beautiful gardens, Oh, and I almost forgot we visited an excellent gift shop where both couples purchased memorable takeaways.

By Ma T |

Wave Hill is a lovely, tranquil spot with wonderful views of the Hudson River.
It has activities that would appeal to the old and young.

By NYC_Retiree |

The second you leave the main road toward the gates of this magnificently landscaped estate you'll feel as though you've crossed into a magical emerald forest. This place is one of the best kept secrets for enjoying the beauty of the Hudson River and playing out that vintage Vanderbilt stay cation fantasy!

By And G |

Whatever season you go the views are lovely. It's an incredibly serene place as well. The only problem is that it may become a victim of it's own success. As more people discover it the more crowded it gets. Well hey - guess I can't be selfish. There are numerous cultural and educational aspects as well.

By Chipperhigh2 |

Attended an outdoor wedding at Wave Hill. Very pretty location for the wedding with a view of the Hudson River. Drinks were served outside and the dinner and dancing was in the Main House. Food was very good and service was excellent. A wonderful time was had by all.

By kamommy |

Wavehill is beautiful year round but when the trees are in bloom and the spring flowers like daffodils etc come out it is absolutely magical. Magnolias were blooming last weekend and we will be back this weekend to see them fully bloomed. The kids also love the family art project (every sat/sun 10-1), it is a nice activity especially on rainy days when you can't do much outdoors.

By JosephfromNYC |

An out of the way gem of the city parks. Overlooking the Hudson River, the gardens and grounds are designed for relaxing. Chairs and benches abound for you to sit in the shade and contemplate life, or just to look at the clouds and sky. They have a shuttle service to help you get there from the subway/train system. Use your IDNY Card to get in for Free. Light foods and refreshments served. Tours also. Go to the website.

By imurbanwalker |

You really have to love the 1% in that they had all these wonderful homes they once lived in - and then they left them for the rest of us to experience. The grounds are well maintained, the greenhouse exhibits wonderful & the Hudson views spectacular. parking may be an issue, but it's worth the tri-. And if you ended up here unexpectedly as we did, you'll marvel all the more at this urban gem

By Sam11_nyc |

We love Wave Hill. It's beautiful and scenic in any season. They have a wonderful Family Art Project program year round every Saturday and Sunday where kids can work on unique art projects. There are lots of lovely places to sit and relax.

By Knollsgerbils |

Magnificent in every way! HIGHLY recommended! Gorgeous scenery! A paradise! Gorgeous flowers, trees, landscaping. Wave Hill House- where Mark Twain used to live! The view of the Hudson River and Palisades is magnificent. A lovely place!

By hrobinson1114 |

Beautiful spot in the Bronx, headed toward Yonkers. Gorgeous overlook of the river and Devine landscaping. Lots of different plants and flowers. Spectacular greenhouse with some very unusual species. Very colorful, a feast for the eyes. You can smell the heavenly batches of lavender as the scent fills the air. Also plenty of benches to sit and admire your surroundings, quiet and a great place to reflect. They also have a nice pond. They have a small art gallery included in admission as well as the historic Wave Hill house, where Mark Twain and Teddy Roosevelt summered. Pretty architecture. Nice little cafe. Food is average at best, but wonderful patio seating, so it was worth it. I fed little birds tiny pieces of bread. Entrance was 10 dollars. Parking directly on site was 13, though I believe there is a shuttle from farther away if that price rubs you the wrong way. Wave Hill and Untermeyer gardens are about eight miles apart, so you could easily do both and have a great outdoor day.

By Aviva F |

It was beautiful. Its nice to go at other times than spring or summer. We went on a foggy drizzly day and it was its own kind of beautiful. First, the view of the Hudson is magnificent. Even fogged up. As the day went on, the view got clearer. The fall foliage was stunning. The different gardens were nice too. I wish they would have labelled the plants in the greenhouse. I loved the herb garden- the plants smelled authentic. There is no onsite parking at present, which is a bummer, but the shuttle runs basically on request which is nice. Also bad is no indoor picnic area, so you cant eat your own food on grounds when its rainy. ( we did anyway, hiding from the powers that be). The shop on grounds is overpriced and the installation we viewed did not work- we tilted the camera toward the picture but nothing happened, and there was no one available on grounds or on the phone to help us. Some of the directions to get to gardens were unclear. It was just as well that we used the culture pass and did not pay. It was beautiful, however.

By Vibrant77 |

Wonderful relaxing and tranquil place for families, couples, singles alike. The vast grounds boast various species of trees especially. This year they didn’t have as many floral displays as in previous years. The mansion use to be open and display art but this year they had a private event going on(wedding) and only the cafe was open. The conservatory has an abundance of cacti plants to view. The gift shop items are pricey but it’s understandable because they need to make money somehow. They have clothing, books, honey and other light food treats. The only con is the limited spaces in parking lot. Fits about 25
Cars only. the tiny street which leads into the lot is supposed to be a 2-way but looks more like a one-way so you may have to reverse back if you’re coming through the entrance and a car is approaching from the opposite direction in the lot.

By anakmelayu |

Taking about a view of Hudson river..wow...
Nice small and easy to stroll garden.
Parking may be difficult on weekends or special activities.

By Kineret M |

We are checking out tea rooms in NY/NJ. This time we went to afternoon tea at Wave Hill. The gardens and view were beautiful to walk around. Afternoon tea we sat outside on the balcony overlooking the forest, which we loved. It was great weather so we were lucky. The food was very good and generously portioned and service was attentive. Reservations are needed and the tea seating is seasonal. Really recommend Wave Hill afternoon tea.

By jpuente009 |

I was very pleased to find this place. It is very quite, clean and have gorgeous views. It is nice to just sit with a good book to enjoy the sound of nature or to relax and wind down on a weekend.

By M D |

It is a small place and parking can be difficult, but for outstanding views of the Hudson and an escape from NYC this is the place to be. It is clean, has a really nice coffee shop that is up to date and is lovely to walk through.

By foodlovergirlny |

A hidden gem in New York. A bit far to get there from the center of Manhattan, but it is so worth the trip for a nice, quiet relaxation. It is a 28-acre estate overlooking the Hudson River. The estate has two houses and a botanical garden, but much, much smaller than Brooklyn or other major botanical gardens. They have a small parking lot which can get full quickly. They do have offsite parking lot with free shuttle as well.

My favorite part of this estate is the walking trail that goes almost all the way around the estate. If you look at the trail on their map, it looks like such a long walk, but it really isn’t. Whoever designed the map was some kind of genius… The estate looks 10 times bigger that it really is on the map. Kind of funny…

They have Café at Wave Hill inside the main house. They offer baked goods, salads, sandwiches, etc. You can go to the ordering counter where friendly staffs will take your order. After you get your food, you can sit wherever you like.

We had a special, seasonal, off-the-menu, almost secret item. It is their quite impressive Afternoon Tea! It is offered during limited seasons, and you have to pre-reserve and pre-pay for the tea. We actually upgraded our Afternoon Tea to High Tea which adds sparkling wine along with strawberries and cream.

It was a wonderful high tea experience, felt like a royalty enjoying the tea, sandwiches, desserts and champagne in “our” castle terrace somewhere. Our server, Charleen was simply amazing! She certainly elevated our fancy High Tea to the next level, thank you!

So, next time you are feeling like escaping the concrete jungle, or just want to go chill out in a beautiful green space, or have a great afternoon tea in the nature, you know where to go!

By nycmom22 |

Wow. An outdoor concert. Views of the Hudson. Greenhouses and gardens. A historic mansion. A good cafe and bathrooms. Really. Who could ask for anything more? We came by metro north and then a slight hike because we did not wait for the shuttle. Subway and car directions available too. Free admission Saturdays 9 to noon

By Michael F |

We only found out about this place a couple of years ago, and we're glad we did. It's convenient to Westchester and Manhattan, and provides fine views of the Hudson, as well as lovely vistas and floral attractions. There are many levels and trails to explore as well. The 28-acre public garden also includes a house with art displays and a cafe that serves afternoon tea (but that's expensive). Admission is $8 for Adults, $4 for Students and Seniors 65+, $2 for Children 6+, and free to Members and children under 6. Google it for more detailed information.

Wade Hill recently was awarded the title of "best attraction in the Bronx". It's definitely a quiet, nature-filled outing. Mostly you walk around and enjoy the gardens and the view of the Hudson river and the Palisades. The view is nothing short of stunning.

They have some small galleries with exhibits that always change. They have programs for kids on weekends. It is free admission Wednesday morning and Saturday morning. Very peaceful.

By Pamela R |

Wave Hill is a gem for anyone living in or visiting NYC. Easy to get to in the Bronx. A great combination of nature, botanical practices, history and art. Easy to navigate is a couple of hours or stay longer and sit back and enjoy the views.

By backhauk |

A beautiful property. Probably great in season. Nice greenhouse. Very pleasant place for a Sunday afternoon.

By Carol M |

I lived in New York for 15 years before I discovered Wave Hill; it's now my happy place. It's a practically perfect garden and arts center in the north Bronx, perched on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River and New Jersey Palisades. There's always something happening on the weekends: family art projects, grown-up art and craft workshops, birding walks, yoga, garden tours, and so much more. But it's also wonderful if all you want to do is sit in one of the comfy chairs on the grounds and read (or nap!). Highly recommended for both travelers who appreciate gardens and the arts and for residents who haven't made it up there yet.

By Judith G |

We have had afternoon tea at many venues, including the Savoy in London and the Plaza in New York, and we can honestly say that this one had the best, most delicious selection of teas and food! Wilfredo’s service was excellent as well, and sitting outside in the beautiful garden alongside the river was amazing! We will be back!

By Back-in-Bklyn |

It's so peaceful at Wave Hill, it's hard to believe you're still in NYC. Absolutely beautiful grounds and gardens. Decent cafe and nice gift shop as well.

By Jess S |

If you're looking for a relaxed, beautiful, clean space that is conducive to a relaxing and meditative atmosphere, you may not immediately think to yourself "I know! I'll go to the Bronx!"... but you would be missing out.

Wave Hill is an absolute jewel in the crown of NYC. Located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, it is a magnificent 28-acre estate with rolling hills, manicured lawns, beautiful gardens and greenhouses and absolutely stunning views of the Palisades in New Jersey and the Hudson River.

I've only ever enjoyed Wave Hill for the escapism. It's the perfect place to wander and clear your head. To have some peace and quiet and people watch. But they also have activities and events which some of my friends have attended and absolutely raved about.

You can bring a snack and eat at their picnic tables or have a snack at their cafe.

I cannot recommend Wave Hill highly enough. Get away from the noise and seek this place out. And if you're a visitor to NYC you'll be one of the few insiders who knows about this secret garden!

By Jennifer P |

I loved it there, very nice and peaceful. A hidden treasure in the Bronx, couldn't believe I am so close to it and never been there before. Lots of different trees, flowers and birds. I believe it is the first Saturday of the month that the entrance is free before 12pm

By Monica M |

This is a natural garden that you will enjoy to expend your day along with your love ones. Is very refreshing and it takes your mind out of the main city and it helps you to relax. If you enjoy a walk in the nature, you will enjoy this place.

By Gloria H |

This was our first time visiting the gardens. We had a very enjoyable time walking around and seeing all the beautiful flower beds and greenhouses. The grounds were well kept and there were many benches and chairs to relax on. In addition there was a gift shop, cafe and picnic area. We look forward to returning in the near future.

By marabel100 |

I want to visit Wave Hill in every season. It's a delight. The art exhibits, the botanical garden, the many different gardens all over the property, the delicious food at the cafe, and the opportunity to walk several miles -- it all added up to a wonderful afternoon. You can also just go and sit in one of the enormous chairs and watch the Hudson float by. It's extraordinary. As a lifelong New Yorker, I can't believe I had missed this all these years.

By Andy L |

A lovely oasis where you can feel (and actually be) pretty much in your "own" gardens - my partner loved it as it so reminded her of British gardens, bountiful yet not fussy.

By Jemlnlx |

Beautiful place. It is steps away from the city, but it feels miles and miles away. Very relaxing environment and though it is no where as close to the New York Botanical Gardens in terms of size, the lack of crowds, setting on the Hudson and being more than less than half of the admission price ($20 vs. $8) make it a suitable substitute. The shop is great as well, selling everything from baked goods, to natural soaps and even jewelry.

By Thomas S |

Set in Riverdale along the New York side of the Palisades . Lots of hiking trails and gardens . Indoor spaces and garden store . Eat outdoors at the Cafe and take in the views .

My gardening friend and I stopped at Wave Hill in the dead of winter to see the bones of the garden and we were not disappointed.

There was about 1.5' of snow on the ground, the winter silhouette of the trees and shrubs was terrific, and the winter color and bud set was inspiring. My friend loved the greenhouse; I like that had a healthy, yummy lunch at the cafe.

Super views of the palisades. There was zero traffic getting out of the city on Sunday morning and we got there in about 15 minutes.

Will def go back in spring on my next trip. Loved it. Big, Beautiful old fashioned garden. Lovely.

Great place to relax and do nothing. Appropriate for all age groups, friends, family, etc...
Small but nice. Not a lot to see but very restful, peaceful and just great place to stop and smell the flowers. There us a nature walk. This is small but through the woods. So, be careful. There are bathrooms to use and a very small cafe. The have pre-packaged meals. They are good. Some drinks and snacks. If you have nothing to do, it's worth a look.

If you have some free time and in the north part of the city (way, way north) a stop at Wave Hill is in order. Approaching the place will have you thinking you are lost and driving around a residential neighborhood on country lanes. Alas, Wave Hill appears. The grounds are situated along the Hudson River with a great view of the bluffs in New Jersey. Stroll around and take in the gardens or sit (and nap) in an Adirondack chair under the trees. We chose the chairs! The old residence is in great shape and open to look around. It appears to be mostly used as a meeting/reception location. There is a small cafe, too, but we did not visit.

As I said, this a remote and definitely worth a stop. I think visiting Wave Hill is going to be a tough sell to children as there does not appear to be any activities geared to their age. .

I LIVED 5 minutes from here... An AMAZING place that would be worth any side trip to NYC... unusual in its solitude and breathtaking in its views

Pleas come to this excellent garden to have a good time and relax, have maybe a picnic and read a book.

This place will be for your comfort with the excellent green fields, the flowers, the plants and the beautiful little fountains.

Also you have a great option to walk over long passings aside the house of this garden. Over here you can walk between the forest and just feel yourself like really in the nature with all kinds of trees and other green plants.

It is really a space for you and your body to have a time for yourself and forget about your problems or stressful things that you have maybe in your work or in your house or other places. You will recharge all your energy to later give the best of you.

100% recommend the view of the garden in front of the Hudson River.

One of New York's hidden gems , great views os the Hudson River and The Palisades.
More like a large private garden than the usual botanical garden.
A pleasant two hours stroll covers the visit with time for a coffee, nice restaurant and pleasant choice of food.

With its beautiful views of the Palisades and the Hudson River at any time of the year, Wave Hill is a place of beauty, peace and relaxation. Seasonal and perennial gardens, green houses, art exhibits, concert series, family programs, cooking classes, a terraced cafe, walking trails and a gift shop offer something for every individual and family. Parking is available on site for a nominal fee.

A place that should be visited more often but somehow is over looked. There is public transportation and free van service from the train. Views that can not be beat, very relaxing chairs. on the splendid lawns- great for quiet conversation. Nice but small gardens. Good food and coffee available.

By Gina H |

Wave hill is so quiet and peaceful you can have a cup of tea or coffee on the terrace or lunch and a glass of wine. I love having my coffee on the terrace and then finding a chair on the lawn and reading, so relaxing and the scenery is beautiful!

You will not believe you are in the Bronx! This garden (not a public park- you must pay to get in) has paved and rustic paths, willows you can sit beneath, and beautifully manicured gardens. The views are also lovely. Picturesque sitting areas overlook the Hudson and there’s a gazebo in the woods if you venture past the pavement towards the river. It’s 100% family, couple, singles friendly and Wave Hill occasionally runs programs open to anyone (like a yoga class on the grass) so definitely check their website before visiting

Breathtaking views of the Hudson River and the Pallisades. Charming gardens with beautiful blooms during open season. Summer offers weekend cocktails and music. Great place to relax and enjoy nature. Who knew it was right here in the Bronx.

You don't go to Wave Hill for history, you go in late October to see the trees change color along the Palisades, and it never disappoints!

This garden is close to Manhattan and the small size makes it the perfect outing for an after-work get-away. A real treat before winter sets in.

Free grounds admission and free crafts and activities on Saturdays here! Fall and winter characters really phenomenal. They guided us through candles and corn husk dolls!! Kids loved it! They have a fantastic gift shop and nice cafe to grab a bite. Parking on site is about $8. Riverviews are incredibly beautiful through the year. Check the website for family fun!

This was my first visit to Wave Hill and I was really impressed. It is a most delightful garden with high quality planting and maintenance and sufficient variety of habitat to allow a great diversity within its plant collections. With great views across the Hudson, plenty of open space for relaxation and a good cafe, Wave Hill makes a good afternoon visit.

Just off the Henry Hudson Parkway, Wave Hill is very close to downtown Manhattan but feels like you are in the most bucolic countryside miles from any city. We bought sandwiches and sat on the peaceful walled terrace (no view but very pretty) and then walked around and we just kept discovering new views of the Hudson and we came upon innumerous small interior tucked away gardens, Spring was in full bloom but i canc imagine that the gardens are beuatiful as they change all year round. There are Wave Hill chairs (a version of an Adirondack chair) scattered around the property and it seemed like lots of people brought their books and came to relax for an hour or so. The shop is beautiful and has a nice variety of garden things, fashion, children's things and homewares. Being a weekday we were able to park in the lot on site.

Beautiful spot on the Hudson with great views of palisades
Great "Japanese garden" and short walking paths

We had a lovely day exploring the gardens, conservatories, gallery and main house. The cafe in the main house had just opened after some extensive renovations and the food was fresh, tasty and nutritious. We happened to be there during a celebratory weekend so admission was free and there was live music and crafts for the whole family. It is definitely worth it to take the time to explore each garden, even though they are small they are connected by small paths and just delightful. It was so easy to get here by MetroNorth (30 minutes from Grand Central) and a shuttle bus was waiting for us when we got off the train to take us to the garden. We didn't want to wait for the shuttle going back so we walked the train station, an easy 15 minute walk. The grounds, bathrooms and all of the facilities were meticulously clean and well designed. It was real treat, one of those adventures where you say to yourself "I can't believe I've lived in NYC for 19 years and never been here."

I highly recommend making the trip to this beautiful oasis. It will ease the rush of NYC. Take the uptown A train to the end of the line, walk up the street a little and get picked up by the free shuttle to Wave Hill. Check out their website for further details. I did the tour which was fantastic - the guide shared her love with the garden and gave wonderful historical information. Great views across the Hudson to the Palisades. A great 'hit' of nature away from the city noise.

Gotta go here, if you are anywhere nearby. Beautiful gardens, immaculately kept, with glorious views of the Hudson and George Washington Bridge.

This is such a wonderful gem on the Hudson River in Riverdale. The views are spectacular and I love the changing art exhibits in the gallery.

Wave Hill doesn't rank among the largest or best-known gardens and parks in New York City, but it may well be the most special. Located on the Hudson River in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, Wave Hill offers indoor and outdoor gardens, an art gallery, a nice gift shop, a mansion that was once the home of many notables, and beautiful grounds with a magnificent view of the river and the palisades in New Jersey. The recently renovated mansion now has a lovely cafe with a nice menu for lunch. Parking is available with quick shuttle service. Exhibits and a variety of educational and cultural programs change regularly, and memberships are offered. You can come for an hour's visit or grab one of the lawn chairs to spend the afternoon reading and enjoying the views.

My daughter and I visited Wave Hill one Saturday morning/afternoon. It was a lovely, serene oasis with many different flower and tree varieties. If you are expecting a New York or Brooklyn botanical garden, you'll be disappointed. This is a gorgeous large mansion overlooking the Hudson River with pockets of flowers and trees on the grounds. The grounds have inviting chairs to sit, relax, and reflect. Watch the tugboats on the river below. In one area, small pathways weave through shade trees and onto a wildflower field. I came across two beautiful bright yellow goldfinches looking for seeds. We brought our lunch and were delighted with the clean patio with chairs and tables for us. If you go during certain hours and days, your admission is free. Beware of the small parking lot; if it is full or you do not want to pay the $8 fee, you'll be directed to a free offsite lot with a free shuttle bus to the front gate.

A satisfying counterpoint to the hustle and bustle of the city, this is a beautiful and serene spot to spend the afternoon. We strolled through the many gardens, contemplated the views from the very comfortable lawn chairs at several vantage points, and enjoyed a lovely lunch. All the staff we met were very gracious and helpful.

If you love nature and beautiful flowers this is for you. Approx 35 mins on line 1 from penn station plus a free shuttle from 242 st ( last stop on the 1 line ). Shuttle is every 10mins past the hour. Alternatively a faster route is with the metro north rail again with free pick up ( web site has all the details. ) Tip your metro card is valid outside rush hour. The main house was used by the British Ambassador to the UN also by British Queen Mother Elizabeth 11, was the past home if Theodore Roosevelt, Thackeray and others. You pass the past home of JFK ' s father on the way up. Has food and drinks, a picnic area. Check out the hidden pond and lots more

Absolutely well maintained oasis in the Bronx!! The cafe the food was incredible!! Sweeping views of the Hudson and palisades, very serene .. Hidden gem in the Bronx!

This is a smaller garden in Riverdale. It has an amazing view of the Hudson River and the Palisades. The grounds are kept impeccable. It is a very serene place.

This is a wonderful cultural institution. You will find art, workshops and performances there. Of course, there are all the gardens to be admired and easy walks. There are plenty of sitting areas, bring your sketch book and cameras. You will not regret going there.

We were looking for a good place to view fall foliage on our recent trip to NYC. Several people suggested Wave Hill, so we went on a Saturday morning. Took the 1 train to the end of the line, and caught the free shuttle bus just outside the station. Wave Hill is a secluded estate overlooking the Hudson River above the George Washington Bridge that offers spectacular views over and across the Hudson. Their are two large houses on the property, along with a woodlands area, formal and informal gardens, conservatories filled with non-native plants, and a general atmosphere and calmness and serenity. Lots of families with strollers, but there is enough room so that it did not seem crowded. Good cafe in one of the houses, so that you can spend as much time as you desire, without going hungry.

It was an awesome tour. I would recommend anyone visiting nyc to take a tour. The fauna was lovely. This is a place you must visit. For singles, groups, couples, families.

A beautiful garden in the Bronx overlooking the Hudson. Definitely worth spending some quiet time here. Cafe service slow, depending on what time you're there but then it's not a problem if you have time and the whole loin of going to these gardens is to make time.

By campeddeer |

Wave Hill is a small park that historically was used as a home by some wealthy and famous people. It's right on the Hudson and the view and the breeze are delightful. Some gardens, an art museum and a place to eat all add to a lovely visit.

Wave Hill is a quiet beautiful place on the Hudson. The bees are fantastic, and it’s a great place for a picnic. It also has a couple of nice at galleries and a cafe.

By holly433 |

This is really a hidden gem in the Riverdale section of the Bronx (the beauitful, wealthy section of the Bronx). It overlooks the Hudson River and has beautiful views of the New Jersey Palisades. You can sit at the benches, read (or write). They have rotating exhibits and lovely grounds.

By Leonard R |

This is a former estate overlooking the Hudson River. The grounds are well-kept, with abundant outdoor flowers, a greenhouse, an herb garden and a pond containing waterlilies and goldfish. You can relax on one of their chairs with a good book or just admire the magnificent views. Bring your camera! No picnicking on the grass is permitted but there is a cafe in the restored manor house. You can also bring your own food and eat in a small, dedicated outdoor area next to Glyndor House, which contains an art gallery.

By Rosa H |

A wonderful place to go relax and forget about the hustle and bustle. Eat your lunch in the picnic area and then go walk it off in the trails and park.

Starting with the amazing beech trees near the entrance, this place is fabulous. The views of the Hudson River are lovely, the many different gardens offer something for everyone. Be sure to check out Armor Hall too.

Went on a whim. We had not heard of this place and found out by accident. Glad we did. Nice place to walk around and enjoy nature. Check their website for directions keeping in mind that you can get close by public transportation and they have a free shuttle bus from the subway. Nice pleasant, laid back environment. Great place to catch your breath...

We first dame in summer, a much nicer time...now, nothing is in bloom, and buildings were closed! In summer, there are lectures and concerts..look and plan ahead..

By Ladyrams51 |

I have lived in NYC for close to twenty years and have only been to Wave Hill three times. I'm not sure why, it's just magical and really only about a 45 min subway ride away!! Not to mention we got to hear a free concert!!

Wave Hill is beautiful. River views are magnificent and the private guided tour is highly recommended. Make sure to visit the greenhouses and devote at least a half day to this attraction.

By Gershwin12 |

Wave Hill is an oasis in the city. The grounds and gardens overlooking the Hudson River are magnificent. This is a route that birds follow for spring and fall migration. This is a must visit for all birders. We planned our trip to walk and bird with Gabriel Willow from the NYC Audubon Society. Gabriel was so informative and really knows his birds!!! Bird migration had not yet begun however we did have a satisfying morning seeing 'the usual suspects". During our walk we viewed the beautiful well maintained gardens. Varied activities are offered; check their website for details on Yoga, bird watching, tours of the gardens and buildings and Art exhibits. We enjoyed a visit to the café and sipped our creamy cappuccino and eating a muffin while enjoying the view. Indoor and outdoor dining was available.
Entrance fee was $8, $4 for children and seniors. Off site parking was free with a shuttle up the hill. On-sit parking was limited and cost $8.

As I live actually within walking distance form Wave Hill, I am here weekly.....and here is my secret...i pretend it is my home, my own private country club....This is the best kept secret in NYC....accessable by public transport and well worth the trip..idyllic settings, a fish pond, beautiful trails and walks..and don't miss the art projects for families on the weekends..the cafe is sweet, and the outside seating is on a slat patio....art work is displayed in one of the houses...this oasis was once home to some of the most notable people of the centuries..like Toscannini!!! so come and sprawl on the grass...know though, no picnic allowed on the grass, no spreaing of blankets and no pets..with the exception of assist animals...but who cares!!! the view of the Hudson and Pallisades are awe inspiring..a greta way to spend the day...oh and yes, you are welcome to my (pretend) private home!

I didn't know what to expect going to a green spot in the Bronx? First thing to catch my eye was this very very unique tree. Beautiful!, never saw a tree like it. The walking trails were tranquil. However as your walking towards the gift shop you will come across the one and only special view. They have a sitting area overlooking the Henry Hudson. Amazing! The water the trees the view!!!!! You could sit for hours!!!

Always a pleasure visiting this local somewhat Botanical garden in the Riverdale area of the Bronx. Lovely view of Hudson and the Bridge and wonder garden flowers variety...Lovely quaint hike. Visited October 4, 2021

By cindela |

This is a lovely garden to walk around, or to bring your family for a picnic, or even for some yoga. It’s very well kept and overlooks the Hudson so the views are just beautiful- especially near sunset. There are woodsy parts, grassy parts, and flowery parts, and even a short trail that leads to a gazebo. The vibe here is definitely more neighborhood-y since a lot of folks opt for the giant NY Botanical Gardens, but I like that Wave Hill is big and diverse yet still walkable and cozy. There is a charge to park and get in.
