Worth the drive

By Jay C |

I'll echo the points made by others re: the road, the distance, the latrine...all things to consider/plan for. Still, this is worth the drive. Even on a somewhat cloudy/overcast day, the views are spectacular.

nice place

By Geoff56t |

I am sure its under costruction now cuz was burned in wildfires in 2016. Its a nice vision of days past

Gorgeous overlook ❣️

By SisterJane |

when we visited there was a roof on the upper portion. Unfortunately forest fires in fall, burnt this down. Currently under construction for replacement roof. The fall colors are spectacular from this vantage point.

It was snowing ❄️ at the top

By Jackie B |

The drive up is a bit rough once you get on the forest service road but it is so worth it. There was only one other person the whole 3 hours we were there. It even snowed ❄️ at the top and it was beautiful. Plan accordingly because there was a 15 degree temp drop from the bottom to the top. It was such a beautiful place!

Worth the drive

By hardendorf |

It's the top of the mountain so a winding twisting road is expected. The road is in good condition so it's not problem unless your brakes fail on the way down. At the top you take an unpaved road for four miles to the tower. The unpaved road is narrow in places but the gravel is packed down so it's easy driving and not too steep. The tower is just a short walk from the parking lot. The view is worth it.

Beautiful Views on a Clear Day

By CountryTravelerUSA |

This has some spectacular views of the mountains of Western North Carolina. On a clear day it is worth seeing. Area is rustic but has restrooms and a camping/picnic area. There is an old fire tower with a bit of history surrounding it. Several hikiing trails as well. The altitude is around 5000 feet. Only draw back is the drive to get there. Once off the highway it is a long drive on gravel to the top.

Great stop along the AT

By bksilver |

If you visit, bring some snacks for the thru hikers, it will be greatly appreciated. Be a trail angel!

Great view, out of the way mountain drive

By gramasherry |

The journey to wayah bald from Franklin takes about an hour with one stop at the Ranger cabin. The walk from the parking area to the tower is paved and actually follows a portion of the Appalachian trail. We spoke to a few through hikers , enjoyed the drive and the short walk to the tower. It was a clear day with a lovely Early spring view and little traffic. This is an opportunity for the curious to hike a bit of the Appalachian trail just for fun. The trail here is much less strenuous for the short time hiker ( a mile or so) than the access at Newfound Gap.
No picnic area but restrooms. No water available. Really nice views from the Tower!!

The most amazing view!

By Stephanie M |

We went on a Monday afternoon and were the only people there. Directions confused us a little, but when we finally got there, it was so worth it! The view is fantastic and it was so quiet you could hear bees buzzing! Easy hike from parking area.

Outstanding scenic views!

By DrCarraway |

The tower and views are great! There are accessible outhouse facilities. The road to the tower is very bumpy and could use some maintenance.

Friends and family

By eagle4332017 |

We had never heard of this place. Not sure exactly how we found out. Having already been to Brasstown Bald, we decided to check it out, The drive from Andrews was great. Winding roads, beautiful scenery and the drive by the lake was really nice. The 4.3 mile dirt road is pretty wide. If you meet a vehicle, one or the other may have to pull to the right. The view from the top, 5,243 feet, is really neat. There are "primitive" bathrooms and they are just that "primitive". May have to hold your nose while you're in there. Did I mention it's free to drive up to it and enjoy the view?

Worth the drive

By R C |

Winding roads and hills. A little narrow in some spots but not scary. Parking and a restroom up top. Short walk to the tower. Great views all around. I found it exciting to see the Appalachian Trail which cuts across the top right past the tower.

Breathtaking

By Kelli |

I drove the 4.4 miles on the well-maintained gravel road. I had already hiked 8 miles that day! It was not a totally clear day. But the clouds added to the beautiful pictures I got. There are still remnants of the fire from a couple years ago. It is an amazingly beautiful place.

A Must See in the Mountains

By ehaggart |

It is one of the most incredible views of the western North Carolina mountains around, as well as being easily accessible to all ages. A 35 minute drive to the parking area and then a 5 minute walk up a paved path opens up to an incredible eastern view that is more than 180 degrees. A must see if you're in the area!

Great view (if only the weather permitted)!

By Tim L |

Even though the rain had caused us to negate walking to a water fall, we elected to drive on up to the lookout tower. This requires several miles of travel via curvy mountain roads, paved and unpaved. The unpaved road had a very good base but extreme caution must be used in that the road is often narrow for two-way traffic, the curves are ofter sharp with at least one switchback, and vegetation foliage from overhanging limbs are obstructive to viewing oncoming vehicles.

But, at the top, what a view! Drive just past the walkway to the tower and around the curve and there is ample parking with restroom facilities. The road ends with a circular loop and a picnic table is available under the trees.

An asphalt walkway leads up to the tower with an upward incline, but smooth walking. We were in the clouds on our visit else the view would be unbelievable. There is no charge for this attraction. The hard part is the drive to/from the tower. Once there the walking is fairly simple with the paved grade and tower steps. In accessing the location remember, this is the land the Cherokee people once called home.

We definitely plan to return on a clear day where we can see forever!

Close to Heaven!!

By kchancey3 |

These vistas are breathtaking!! It's an amazing site to see the new growth come after the fall fires. Very romantic and also family friendly. We only wish we had brought a picnic!!

Top of the world

By Amy S |

One of my favorite spots to visit in Macon county. Beautiful 360 view of the mountains. Roof was burned in the fires this past winter bit still safe to climb

Excellent scenic views and hiking trails

By FloridaGals |

Lookout tower and hiking trails were well worth the long drive up the somewhat rough dirt road. Just as beautiful in the summer as it was last fall with foliage changing.

Great views

By Shanon911 |

Great views! Not sure how it looks now after the fires but a must see! You can see for miles and miles.

Beautiful views

By Jill M |

Love this place!! The sites are absolutely beautiful and great for the whole family!! The road getting there is in need of repair but other than that it is beautiful! Great place for a picnic!

Breathtaking view. Everyone says WOW!!!!

By b_guile |

This is a great place to visit if you're looking for a walk that isn't strenuous, and a great view. I take all my out of town visitors here. It's a short drive from Franklin, but the drive up the mountain slows you down a bit. You have to drive slow on a gravel road with some ruts and holes, but it's nothing a car can't handle. When you arrive you will pass the entrance and go to your right for parking. Then walk back to the sidewalk, a little uphill but not too bad. It's a very pretty stroll to the tower.

On Top of the World

By AHullFamily |

Lookout is impressive but the drive up is a little scary. Parking was limited due to high number of visitors for the eclipse.

Awesome place to visit

By Kerry S |

Not recommended for motorcycles (unless you ride a dirt bike), the last 4.4 miles are dirt. For a mountain dirt road it's kept in very good condition. Don't be in a hurry, it's a slow ride, ENJOY IT! The most amazing view in the NC mountains. We liked it much more than Mt Mitchell.

WOW: GREAT VIEW!

By Elizabeth A |

We hiked to this spot, but a drive up a steep winding road will get you here as well - and the view is worth either way of getting there! I am not sure how many miles you can see, but it's a long way over many mountain ridges - breathtaking!

Great day trip for the area!!

By Melissa C |

Breathtaking views!! Even the drive is spectacular!! The drive is a windy, narrow, gravel road. Just take your time and enjoy the trip to the top...it is worth the drive!! Area is well maintained!! They even have restrooms at the top!!

on a clear day one can almost see forever

By john e |

Once used a a fire look out post now open to the public. The view itself looks out at 4 different states. Easy to walk .

Beautiful

By Kathy M |

The views are amazing. 5345 feet above sea level. The tower has been rebuilt since a fire. Some trees near the edge are burnt but still look really cool. The drive up is not for the faint of heart but a lot easier than some made it out to be. Just slow down and you may have to pull over for someone but generally speaking there is enough room if the person on the mountain side pulls over to the side and let's the person on the side looking down the mountain.

worth the trip up

By Cecilia Y |

this is a worthwhile venture that offers a fine view of the surrounding countryside. It rained the day we visited, which made the overall atmosphere even more etherial.

Awesome view!

By Steve Mullen |

Quite a drive, but the parking area is close to the 300 yard paved path. Breath-taking views at 5300 feet

beautiful

By SabrinaBSuber |

I was a little worried about my Camry making the haul to the top but the road was great even with all the rain the area had been having. In fact it was Camry day i guess bc total I saw about three on the trip up and back down the mountain. The drive up to the top was beautiful and though I am terrified of heights it was the most spectacular view. I highly recommend this stop and will definitely go back.

BEAUTIFUL VIEWS!

By MostellerShaw |

The views from the top of the mountain are beautiful! I was glad to have a JACKET with me for the temperature drop and the winds. Don't forget your CAMERA.

Must see!

By BackPacker762086 |

If there is a Western NC must see site, it’s Wayah Bald. You can see for miles and at least 3 states. The history, the colors, the hikers, the view. I ❤️ it there!

Gorgeous views, easy to access

By Stephanie H |

Some of the best long range mountain views you can find in the Smoky's! Easy walk to the lookout tower, suitable for all ages.

A Way stop for a long hike

By Mary F |

Stopped here during one of the Make A Wish 28 mile hikes. It was a welcome stop, believe me. Plus, it's very cool to see this space in the middle of a trail. We took photos, laughed and had a nice stop over. Then on. You should visit here.

Views to die for.

By scott m |

This bald provides 360* views of the western North Carolina mountains. Full access about 10 miles out of town. Pack a lunch for a spectacular picnic.

Experience a Few Miles on the AT!

By pianohiker |

It's February 2021, cold, wet, some snow and not very crowded on the Trails up here in the Nantahala Forest and Great Smoky Mountains. Which is exactly why we rented a cabin for the month in the Cowee Valley 10 miles north of Franklin. Beautiful in the winter. You can really see the "bones" of the mountains without all the greenery. So having been up to Wayah Bald in the summer, we were anxious to see the fabulous views in the winter. Surprise! Before we could get on the road that climbs 8 miles up to Wayah Bald, there was a gate closing the road off. BUT we saw a couple cars just parked on the side and then the sign "Appalachian Trail Georgia to Maine" with arrows left and right. Wow a chance to walk a bit of the AT in the footsteps of so many other (braver!) hikers. So we chose the 'To Maine" trailhead which was up toward Wayah Bald, and did 1 mile in, turned and 1 mile out. Easy walk, too cloudy to see all the mountains, but the magic of the AT sufficed. Great fun.

Must see!

By ct103 |

Beautiful view of the Smokeys. We made this an afternoon trip during our short vacation, if you are a nature lover and hate the crowds this is the place for you. It's off the beaten path. You turn off of the paved road and ravel 9 miles up into the mountains on a national forest dirt road so be prepared. There is a bathroom at the tower parking area but it's just an outhouse and has no water so bring your own.

FUN hike!

By MajorQuilter |

Lovely, single-track, pedestrian only path, which is also part of the Appalachian Trail. Nothing what so ever to say negative about this experience.

Incredible View

By Samantha B |

If you love history, walking and nature then Wayah Bald is the place for you! While it may take a good 30 minutes from town and then a 7 minute walk to the actual tower, the view is worth it! The tower has great slabs of information regarding the history of the tower! It is beautiful during fall, where the leaves are changing and its a great place to watch the sunrise!

Spectacular view to the East

By Roscoe F |

The new restrooms and the completed walkways make the trip from the parking to the tower easy. The view to the east is best at noon when the mist has been cleared. the Trasils lead from there to the north. It is a great place to see the terrain of the "APP TRAIL".

Spectacular Clear-Day Views, Ridge-Line Hiking.

By Jennifer Hawkin... H |

Visited this landmark several times throughout the years - even attending an ash-scattering memorial here. Beautiful views on clear days, nice hiking and picnic location even on cloudy days. Not too far from the town of Franklin NC.

Great Views and interesting climb

By VQuesada |

Great Views and interesting drive to the top. I think it is worth the trip. It would be a good spot for a picnic!!

All the Way to the Top Fun

By angelaohedgepeth |

I love wildflowers and I love mountain views. On my third visit to Wayah Bald this weekend, the skies were not fully clear so the views were not as far, but even the ride up the mountain is worth the trip. I saw Bee Balm, Rhododendron, Turk's cap, Fleabane, Hempvine, and Queen Anne's Lace to name a few. The wildfires had blackened some of the trees, but even that made for interesting contrasts between them and the wildflowers and mountain backdrops.

Vacation

By Kathleen M |

Great place to go visit in Highlands, NC. Beautiful scenery. I am a grandma that went with my daughter, son-in-law, nine year old granddaughter, and one year old grandson. It had great mountain scenery. We are from north Florida so it was a welcome change.

Fantastic Views

By MooreCreek |

Loved the views, and the road up to the Bald was a true mountain road!!! The history of the lookout was interesting. A well maintained facility.

Great views, off the paved roads....

By KPS34997 |

Trust your map (or GPS)! Despite the sense that you've left civilization, will run out of gas and never be found, you're on the right road. The view from the Bald is worth all of the questions from the back seat. ("Really? You're sure this leads to the Tower? I think we're Lost!") You're rewarded with a magnificent view of the NC Smoky Mountains at the intersection of the Appalachian and Bertram trails. If you're a pilot you have a great view of Macon County Airport 1A5 in the distance. It's all off the usual tourist track, and absolutely worth the time!

Spectacular View

By Claire M |

Though the ride up to the tower seemed long on a dirt road, the view is well worth it. It is an easy climb to the top of the tower and the 360 degree view is fantastic. There are so many ridges they are hard to count. The Smokies are hazy in the background. You go past the forest ranger's cabin on the way up.....in the early 1900's, it took the first ranger and his wife a full day to drive from Franklin in their model T, stopping every hour to fill their overheated engine with cold water. It must have been a lonely existence. You can pick up the Appalachian Trail near the tower and you can walk as far as you want.

Sunday drive led us here for the first time

By rallwine2000 |

Wow, what a drive. Beautiful flowers, trees, on the ride up. Will be going back. It was a surprise to find a bathroom there as well. Will be back when the tower is done.

Beautiful view! Spectacular!

By kcojan |

Beautifully breathtaking view! This place has a really nice access into the AT. If you go to the lookout tower, go to the opposite side too and you'll find a high meadow and a nice place for a picnic on a warm spring day. The fall is the best time to get a very awesome and colorful picture at the top.

Spectacular views

By Ned K |

The gravel rd that you can take to the parking area is in good shape most of the time. From the parking lot there is a short walk on a paved trail to the lookout tower. The fires in 2016 burned the roof off the stone lookout tower, however, through generous donations by businesses in Franklin the roof has been replaced. There are steps to climb to the top of the tower. At over 5000' in elevation the views are spectacular on clear days. There are signs that tell you what mountain peaks you are looking at. The Appalachian trail comes right through here.

One and done

By jaxjohnson |

The drive up is pretty but about half-way up the paved road becomes narrow, gravel, rough. The tower and many of the trees up there were burned in a fire last year. The view was nice but all things considered, I probably won't go again. There are many other places nearby with easier access and spectacular views. The highlight of my stop up there was running into 3 interesting people who were hiking the entire length of the Appalachian Trail. One had no water left so I gave her the 2 16-oz bottles I had in my car. They amaze me.

Directions on google are wrong

By Debby C |

Hard to find. Don’t use the directions link in the app. We went on a foggy day but it was still interesting. Couldn’t see anything and the road was very slippery.

Great stop

By nerak50 |

This was a good stop with a great view.
We hated that it had a recent fire up there but the mountain view up at the tower was still great.
This is a small walk up hill and then some stairs in the tower.

Thanksgiving Drive

By Flamingazalea |

We enjoyed going up to Wayah Bald so our gkids & niece & nephew could see snow... They loved the tower & the view was amazing.. Beautiful in the fall when leaves change!! Planning ti do it again this Thanksgiving 👍🏻👍🏻

Just out sightseeing

By tcreech68 |

Out driving around, just sightseeing, and saw the sign for the Wayah Bald Lookout Tower. Decided to check it out. Plenty of parking and very clean. Nice walk up to the tower.

God's creation is awesome!!!

By Elaine H |

We visited here in early September 2016. Well worth the curvy national forest road to get up to it! Views in every direction when you are up in the tower! We really want to return in the fall!!

Beautiful views

By U8298FRmarys |

Love winding gravel dirt road leading up to a short walk to the tower. Loved the magnificent views. So cool on top of mountain with the wind blowing. Must do again.

Good hike worth the view

By gfp76 |

We enjoyed this walk to the tower as did our reluctant kids. One of the best in franklin in all seasons. Go on a day w good view

Interesting, but ...

By Sergeant Major Michael H |

Good place to visit if you have an hour or so to kill. Short, paved walk from the roadside parking. Gravel road most of the way. Good views to one side, however, nearly 50% of the long range views are obscured by the over-growth of trees. Something to do if you have children I suppose.

It burned in the Nantahala Fires, but it will be good as new by now

By michaeldavispio |

The Wayah Bald Lookout Tower was burned over during the fires that impacted the area in November of 2016. The wooden roof structure and the visitor signs were are lost, but the stone tower its self, was unharmed. The Forest Service will rebuild the roof structure and the fire will be just another colorful note in the twoer's history.

Must see

By JulieTMX |

We stayed in Franklin, NC this is a bit of a drive but well worth the view! Once you park a quick walk to the tower that is remaining after the fire from 2016

Scenic.

By Susie W |

We went there when it was raining and it was incredible. Not many people and we got to see where the Appalachian and Wayah trails cross. I can now mark this off my bucket list.

Amazing Views

By Jack-n-Jill-1 |

We are Leaf Lookers and come to this area in October but venture further north for our outings so we had never been here. It was spectacular! The incredible vista is well worth the drive and short uphill walk.

Great Views

By TexasJo |

We could see great views from the top of the tower. Not many steps up and an easy climb. Worth the trip.

Absolutely stunning views

By ffmiller74 |

The drive up was long but the hike to the tower is short. Once we got there the view was beautiful. We took our young children and my parents. Everyone was able to walk up to the tower.

great views clean love this place

By mjmusicsc |

the wife and i went for a picnic and had a great time
easy access for all..
last fall we saw a bear on the way up that was nice....

Beautiful

By Foodat |

Longish drive -awesome in the fall. Short walk for gorgeous views. A few other spots to explore on the way. A nice afternoon.

Beautiful place to visit on a clear day

By Shara Post |

This is a gorgeous place to visit on a clear day. I believe you can see three states from the tower. I believe it is NC, TN and GA. The tower has changed since the fires that burned the structure but it is still beautiful. I believe the elevation is around 5400 - 5500 feet. It is a beautiful area to hike.

Beautiful Views But the ride Can be Intimidating

By travelwriter52 |

The road to the lookout tower was steep and the last four miles were on a forest road that was graveled and narrow. But if you are comfortable with the drive, the rewards are worth it. View of many mountains. HIstorical lookout used to be a forest fire lookout. Easy hike from parking area, but parking is limited.

Lovely drive and view

By Mary G |

Late spring brings lovely flowers along the road and at the top: flame azaleas, native azaleas, mountain laurel. View from the top is lovely on a clear day. Appalachian Trail and Bartram Trails cross the bald. Easy paved path from parking area to the tower. Picnic area is not well maintained. Every year I visit alone or with family and friends. Single lane road is unpaved but graded occasionally.

Must See Landmark

By Lori L |

Great views, but don't go if it is foggy!
Nice trail and restroom at the top.
Long narrow road to the summit, but easily accessible.

What A View!!!!

By DEBORAH H |

After driving on a curvy road for 8 miles, we took a gravel road for another 4.5 miles. The gravel road was easily driven on in our Camaro but don't expect to drive fast. Once you arrive at the top, we found burnt trees but new growth was noted. The view from the tower is amazing. There are map information boards that tell you what the names are of the mountains you are seeing. You can see for miles.

Gorgeous

By Getaway726399 |

What an incredible view! Quite a drive to make it to the top, but oh so worth the incredible views and amazing tower! We didn't expect to walk quite as much, but it wasn't a bad walk at all and paved! Must see for a gorgeous view of the mountains and town below

Stunning 360 View

By Michelle M |

This was a 900 foot climb in 2 miles... took us approximately 1.5 hours up. The hike was beautiful even without water. The payoff was the breeze and view at the top of the fire tower.

This trail head isn't easy to find and is only marked by a tiny forestry service sign, surrounded by houses. It's lined with Rhodos and Mountain Laurel... stunning.

A must see when in the Franklin, NC area

By KMA6 |

A beautiful drive to the parking area and then a slow incline walk to the tower itself. One you are on the tower the views are so expansive views are so worth the trip. Information as to what mountains you are see is provided on the tower itself.

Great place to see. The view is incredible and the hike is easy.

By Lonnie Pate |

If you go on a sunny day you can see for 100 miles! We always meet a hiker or two who are on the AT or the Bartram Trail. Defintely worth the trip.

Gorgeous views!

By gagirl75 |

First, be warned that the drive up is rough. This was not the first mountain I'd driven up, but the last leg of the drive up was extremely rugged-in fact we saw a huge muffler lying in the middle of the road, which based on all the bumps along the way, we assumed fell off some poor truck/van along the way up or down.
Right as we were approaching the top where you park, there was a cluster of vehicles and folks standing outside of them. I have no clue what they were doing but it was a little unnerving seeing them eye us as we drove by. When we parked, we were the only folks going up to the lookout-it was a Thursday morning so that makes sense. We just felt a little uncomfortable being that far off the road with no cell reception. Alas, all was well and we were able to enjoy the view.
What a view it was! We were there in November, and sadly after peak leaf season, but we enjoyed the view nonetheless.
They have primitive bathroom stalls in case you need them, and picnic tables if you want to enjoy a meal while you're up there!

Beautiful

By Sparklygirlchef |

We really enjoyed this trek. The drive up was a little intense but totally worth the end result. The view is stunning

A beautiful view of the NC country side

By keaheyc |

The twisting turning mountain roads delivered me to a most enjoyable location. Elevation of the Wayah Bald Tower is almost a mile high and provides a most beautiful location that provides a view of Franklin in the distance.

Spectacular views

By Angelakbd |

This is a great place to visit if you just have a day in Franklin. The views are beautiful the hiking trails around the area are moderate to strenuous. The view stretches for miles on a clear day and it's a great place to take a picnic lunch.

Beautiful view

By courtleister |

My husband and I stayed in Franklin and if you are in the area, you should definitely make a stop. The drive itself is beautiful but keep in mind that there are a lot of switchback roads and you drive for several miles along a gravel/dirt road. Once you arrive, there is a short uphill walk to the lookout. If it’s a bit cloudy or overcast, give it a few minutes as the sight is absolutely beautiful!

Quiet meditation with a view

By tlmittel |

Easy walk from parking with a maintained outhouse restroom facility. Breathtaking views year round. Don't forget your camera.

Views for Miles

By Christine_in_Va |

While you can drive almost all the way up to the tower, we chose to hike over from Wayah Gap (about an 8.5 mile, round-trip hike). The view was spectacular and we liked seeing peaks along the Appalachian Trail that we had hiked over earlier (like Siler Bald).

The best and highest view in the area!

By Joan R |

The road to the tower is closed until Mar. 15, but we hiked up on the Appalachian Trail, through some snow on the shady side of the mountain. It was about 4 miles each way, but not that strenuous.
We were rewarded with the most amazing view on the beautiful clear day! Needless to say, we were the only ones there since it was rather cold and in the middle of the week.

Gorgeous

By renatruex |

Stunning beauty! If u haven't visited here. Please make it happen if possible. The view is breath taking. And a nice hike to the tower as well.

Amazing View

By Kate W |

The gravel road is about 5 miles to the top. There is ample parking. The view is spectacular. The day we went was cloudy and misty. The combination of the dead trees from the fires last year and all the bright green new growth was a stark contrast and gave it a cool, sort of spooky atmosphere. If you are a hiker, this is where Bartram Trail intersects with the AT. We hiked for about 2 hours on Bartram Trail and it was beautiful and peaceful.

Amazing Views, kept the kids entertained for a while

By Nancy W |

I brought the grandkids here, hoping to spark their interest taking a nice hike on the Appalachian or Bartram Trail, but the party pooper boys decided to be totally contrary to what I wanted to do on this trip, so I forced them to go to the top of the overlook and stay there while my granddaughter and I explored a bit. Needless to say, we didn't get in much hiking before having to return to quiet them down.

Driving here is very long haul up the mountain with lots of switchbacks, very slow going. This is a larger area than I had expected, with good trail markers and background posts, adequate bio facilities, and ample parking.

Spectacular views from all sides, can't imagine the fall color from here! What finally excited the kids was that at some point during our visit, we ended up above the clouds. They really wanted to "touch" the clouds, so we waited at the top of the tower as they silently crept up the hillside and fully engulfed us in fog. That made this a special visit, something we will all remember.

Absolutely Beautiful

By Marj T |

My mother was raised in Macon County and I have a lot of family still here. I get here as often as possible. Wayah Bald is always on my list. Serene and beautiful. Last night's visit was at sunset which is wonderful but busier than usual. Still well worth the trip.

Totally Engulfed in Clouds

By JKorW |

Fortunately I've been here before, so know it can be a much better experience. Be aware, the trek up is about 5 miles on a rugged dirt road.

Nice EZ Hike

By RoverToad |

We drove up the mountain to this tower after church wearing our Sunday best..It is an easy walk on an asphalt path. The view is great and you get to meet the hikers of the AT trail. There is a picnic area on the outskirts of the parking lot.

Amazing View

By NiteOwl7 |

The view is amazing – and the AT goes right by the tower! That is the good. The bad is the road. We took a full sized pickup truck up the forest service road to the tower. The road turned out to be barely wide enough for one full size vehicle and it is gravel. On one side you have the mountain side to slide off of and on the other side are deep ditches caused by storm water run off. So as long as you don’t meet anyone for the 4+ miles up the mountain you are o.k. – But this is a popular site so you will get enjoy the challenge of threading two vehicles through a one lane road.

Amazing views!

By Ybutterfly9 |

Worth the drive and short walk up to the tower. The views from Wayah Bald Tower were breathtaking. We had a gorgeous sunny day and you could see for miles. Might want to bring a light windbreaker as it is a bit chilly up there. The drive up was an adventure indeed but once you get there, you quickly forget about it! Kids 9 and 6 were awestruck. They also got to see one of the hikers from the Appalachian Trail coming by.
While you are out in this direction check out Rufus Morgan Falls as well.

Awesome views -- be careful as you drive up narrow road -- scary drop off --no guard rails.

By Candy R |

When you park, there's a short walk -- all uphill though! You can see forever once you climb the tower. Saw some girls walking the Appalachian trail which goes through there. Cars coming down the mountain in a hurry and road is narrow -- so be careful! There are picnic tables a little ways away from tower. We saw a grouse (bird that looked kind of like a chicken). Will come back when things are blooming or in the fall.

Amazing Views

By Anthony P |

This stone fire tower sits on Wayah Bald. There is parking and bathrooms nearby. The Appalachian Trail and the Bartram trails cross at the tower.

The tower is well interpreted, providing some natural history as well as American history of the area and the tower. The view from the tower is amazing, as is the air, and the people - we met several through hikers on their way North.

This was a beautiful experience and one that I am very happy that I stopped - and you will as well.

Spectacular views

Right on the Appalacian trail and most of the time when you go you will meet hikers. You can have a really nice hike on the trail but for the novice, remember the hike out is all downhill and you are going to have to come back up hill all the way back to the tower. The views are worth the short walk from the parking area to the tower, even if you choose not to hike. The tower has been restored and is safe and easy access.

Forever View

By georgiatraveler92 |

Amazing day! We could see several states as we looked around. Luckily we had a clear day. It would be tough if it was a "smokey mountain" day!

Great View

By dodmead |

We were looking to do some walking, but this is too far uphill to walk (around 4 miles). The road is in good shape and most vehicles should have no problem with it. The view was great, even on an overcast day. The view is undoubtedly spectacular on a clear day. There are also a lot of information signs providing background on the location and its history. We will visit again and hope for a clear day.

Love love love

This is one of my favorite views in all of North Carolina. We hiked up here halfway through our section hike and actually stayed the night close to the summit - the sunset was incredible and the sunrise breathtaking. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

I Think I Understand Landscape Painting Now

By Jaquie C |

Stunning. I didn’t want to like it, but I think I saw God. There are so many mountains! Also the road was lined with the precious little cabins that I’m sure were full of happy vampire families or children-eating witches. Enchanting! Beautiful views all around.

Great views

By Regina F |

The drive is beautiful and worth the hairpin turns! The road is paved some of the way and then turns to dirt but it is well maintained. The views from the top are spectacular.

Beautiful views!

Little bit of a drive from Franklin but so worth it. Once you get there it's a 5 minute walk to the tower.

Great find with Awesome Views!

By Pam D |

While heading down to Georgia, my friends and I decided to stay off the highway and find local stops. And Boy, we were glad we did! The drive up to the tower was Awesome, including seeing a Mama Black Bear with her young family!
Then to walk up to the tower to see phenomenal views of 4 states was Wonderful!
Make sure you take the time to stop here!

Wayah Bald visit

Took friends on a Jeep ride to Wayah Bald and had picnic lunch. Gorgeous site. Windy, cool day. Met other friendly folks visiting there.

Incredible Views

With a small hike the payoff is tremendous. The lookout tower and views are incredible. I highly recommend this to visiotrs

An exceptional climax to beautiful winding trip through the woods

By BobF1947 |

Yes, the road is long and curvy, but the trip and destination (elevation 5345) are worth every minute. The 360 degree view from atop this recently restored stone fire tower is awesome. The view from Wayah (wolf) Bald is perfect for sunrises, sunsets, and Smoky Mountain vistas. Easily accessed from a convenient parking area the tower is suitable for all ages. And if the tower steps are a barrier, the views from ground level are still spectacular. For long-hikers, the Appalachian Trail and Bartram Trail meet at the tower and Wesser Bald and Lake Nantahala are only a few miles away. A great stop for tight budgets and large families — it’s free. Don’t miss this, it’s a special place.

Fantastic views!

By Pat W |

This small hike to tower is easily accessible for all ages. Views are beautiful. Latrine bathroom available. Drive to top is an experience in itself...

A must take to place

By mountainlaker |

When I have visitors to this Franklin area, I always take a drive up to Wayah Bald...always impressive and well worth the drive and time..no matter what time of year. Obviously need thought to road up when weather is predicting snow, as being 4,750 elevation..snow can be on the roads. Most time all year road is clear. Don't miss this location for a real mountain treat.!

Beautiful

By Ashtb03 |

We were the only ones there. It is a far drive up but it is definitely worth it. The views are amazing and once there it is a quick walk to get to those views.

Great Views

By teatee99 |

Went here on a tripadvisor forum recommendation & boy am I glad that is was recommended. This is not a common tourist spot so you have it basically to yourself! The road leading up to the tower is a dirt/gravel road, once you reach the top there is a paved walkway that takes you to the tower. The views are amazing!!

Excellent observation post to explore!

By rolltideTCP14 |

My wife and several other couples had a great time exploring this tower. Getting to the tower wasn't difficult (typical NC mountain roads). The final part of the road is gravel but it is wide and well maintained. There is a very short walk to the tower. The view is spectacular as you get to see NC and Tennessee. There are several maps that point out significant points that you view. Well worth the time and drive, we had a great time!

Worth the trip

By Jerry B |

Beautiful, stunning views. There is no bad time to visit. I love to go in the summer because its so much cooler than the valley. I love to go in the winter because you can see for miles. Definitely worth the hike to get there

Unsurpassed views of the the Smokies. An enjoyable out of the way stop along the Appalachian Trail - perfect for our kids aged 13 & 15 at the time.

Great Place to Check Out off the Beaten Path

By Ali |

Found this awesome little spot on Trip Advisor. We stayed in Franklin over night and thought it would be fun to check this out before heading into the Smoky Mountains. You must take a very, very, very windy road to get up to the lookout tower. It is a one lane each way paved road and then turns into a gravel road. Takes awhile to get to the top, but so pretty along the way. It was foggy the morning we went and we could not see the views, but still super cool and we had the whole place to ourselves. It is a pretty high elevation and such a neat tower to explore (even in the fog). Check it out and beat the crowds in the Smoky's!

Beautiful view

This is one of the best views in Franklin. It is a easy walk from the parking area. A great spot for a picnic or a photo shoot. It would be a romantic setting for a wedding.

Great views.

By jrkautz@frontier.com |

A drive along a winding highway and long gravel road is rewarded by excellent views. In late spring, the laurel and rhododendron are spectacular. A favorite of many locals.

Watching the sun rise or set here would be amazing, the views are spectacular!!! There are restrooms but take some paper there wasn't any.

Nice views, scary drive!

By heather11183 |

I decided to visit the lookout tower after reading and researching reviews on here, but I do want to add, make sure you print out directions, my GPS and phone had NO signal on the way up the mountain. Now when I say a scary trip, I'm a Floridian, from south Florida where the land is flat and the roads are straight, I was a little "freaked" to be traveling such winding roads with such steep close to the edge drop offs. The other thing that threw me off was the last leg of the trip you travel on a gravel narrow road, for a while I was doubting that we were even going the right way! Lol, but once we got up there the parking lot was well maintained, with mini bathroom and a nice path to the lookout tower. In the end I was so glad we took the time to find this hidden gem!

Beautiful view - knuckle-whitening drive for those who are afraid of heights

By MHJR |

My family enjoys visiting Wayah Bald every time we come to the Franklin area. It's a beautiful mountain and the drive to the top is worth the gorgeous view (even though I am terrified of heights and annoy my husband by gripping the handles of the car door the entire way up). The road is well maintained, but halfway up the mountain, it turns to one lane dirt/gravel and be warned, there are no guardrails. But we've never had any problems...just took our time and watched for oncoming cars. As I said earlier the view is lovely. We were surprised to visit in April 2017 and see that the area had experienced a major fire. The roof of Wayah Bald Observation Tower had burned (so it's an open viewing platform now), but luckily, the ranger's cabins further down the mountain escaped the fire untouched. It'll be interesting to see how the forest recovers. Most of the larger trees seemed to be okay - with just the underbrush cleared out.

Great off the beaten path activity!

By Tracie F |

Grab Subway in Franklin and head up to Wayah Bald.... you can eat lunch there and enjoy the short trails and views. Beautiful spot, off the beaten path. Enjoy!

Amazing view but scary drive up and down

By Lisa K |

The view is worth the crazy ride up. Several people hiked up and said that the hike was not too bad.

Good dirt road sight seeing experience

By James B |

A bout 5 miles of narrow dirt/gravel road to Wayah Bald tower is worth the time and effort. The views are great from the surrounding area as well as from the top of the tower. A lot of butterflies feeding on the plants on the short walk from the parking lot to the tower.

100 mile view

By Reb C |

I believe you can see 4 states from this tower. It's a short walk from the parking lot. If you are driving from the NOC, the 18 miles is a beautiful drive along the river and there are 2 or 3 large falls along the way. I bring guests here when they come visit Bryson City.

Our second trip and will be returning.

Wayah Bald Tower!💕

By Irene B |

The tower, which was just reconstructed due to forest fires in the area is beautiful. The views from up there are quite literally, breathtakingly beautiful.

I hated the road

By ACTtherapist |

Of course, you cannot say a mountain view like this is not worth it. But after spending an entire day on the BRP the day before looking at views that are very easily accessible, the road up to this view was not something I would ever want to do again. Maybe it was because on the way up (before we ever got on the gravel forest road) we saw a wrecker coming down with a smashed SUV that signalled foreboding to me. We went up on a bright, sunny, dry weekday and I'm so glad we weren't having to share the road and didn't pass any other cars. We did pass several exhausted looking hikers on the way up. Truthfully, the road wasn't quite as bad as I thought it would be, but I just don't find windy, loose gravel, high switchback type roads with no guardrails to be a fun experience. I was also concerned about how far the litlte path up to the tower from the parking lot would be as I had an ankle injury. The path was paved and I had no problem walking up it. There were restrooms that were not bad at all, typical of the type found at these mtn stops in western NC. The view was nice but not the best view I've seen in western NC. I'm glad I went but I certainly will not come again. The part we liked the best was the approx 8-9 mile narrow, windy well-paved road before you get to the gravel road. This road was very scenic and beautiful and I believe had guardrails where I thought there should be guardrails! Beautiful creek, fields, homes all along the way. I guess everyone should go once if you aren't afraid of heights and scary roads.

Breathtaking views!

By Robert L |

First off everyone mentions the the gravel road on the way up. It's a gravel road going up a mountain. So you get what you get. We took a midsize SUV up no problem. There was a gentleman that had rode a Harley up when we were there. Not as bad as some of the reviews. Just take it slow. It is a long ride up. But definitely worth it. It is beautiful!

Great view for a Picnic

Lovely respite stop for a picnic and refreshing. We met many thru hikers and stretched our legs on the nearby trail.

By gapeach305462000 |

I loved going up there some one said it burnt down and that is so very sad that someone can disreguard the beauty in the world as to destroy our natural habitat.....

Long drive, but great views

By Glen W |

Worth the trip, but don't go on a rainy day because you'll be in the clouds and won't see a thing. The roads leading there are in good shape, but not so well marked. Recommend.

Mile high wedding ceremony

By Jim M |

Tough 20 minute drive to get there but well worth it. To see this otherwise hike the Appalachian Trail.

Fabulous Sunset

By PhilatStoke |

A little research revealed that Wayah Bold was the nearest location to see a glorious sunset. 4.4 miles of gravel track made our journey slow and it took longer than we anticipated, but we were in time to see a wonderful sunset from the tower. Our local friends tell us that the area is beautiful in every season but most especially in the fall when the colours are at their peak. In winter the road can be closed and the gate locked. One has a feeling of being on top of the world. Well worth the journey.

Wait for a clear day.

By hornbender |

We had no choice about which day we went, and were totally socked in by clouds. Visibility about 200 yards. Mention had been made of a meadow of flowers in May/June. There was a small grove of Rhododendrons and Mountain laurel, but not much of a show. Six mile gravel road can really ding up the underside of your car, if you care about that.

Paved road "hike"

By Michelle C |

Very short, very easy "hike" (more like stroll) up to the tower. We were nervous about the ride up the mountain based on other reviews, but it wasn't bad at all - and we're lifelong Floridians. The view is gorgeous and there are some side trails you may want hike along to extend your visit. Make sure you stop at the old ranger station on the way down!

We went with recommendations from trip advisor ad it was worth the lengthy drive up to two main roads. Especially in late Octob

By kinematic11 |

It is not a hike, it is a very easy stroll up a paved walkway from the gravel road. The gravel road will take you at least 15 mins drive and there are NO guardrails, and it is no made for 2 cars to pass at speed. You can pass an oncoming car, but you will slow to 3 mph. The bathrooms are simple but there are two of them. There is room for the kids to run around and plenty of places and space to take pics. Even if you do not walk up the steps to the two story tall tower, there is plenty view. The bartram and Appalachia trails both cross here at this fire tower area, we saw the bartram trail signage but did not locate the Appalachia trail itself. Male sure you have gas in your car and a jacket, cause if the sun ain't shining, you are going to be cold.

Follow Hwy. 64 west through Franklin, NC, and turn right at the Wayah Bald direction sign. Take the first left onto Wayah Road (State Road 1310). There is a gas station that was closed on the left when you turn. Stay on State Road 1310 past FS 388, up winding road to top of the hill (Wayah Gap). Turn right on the gravel road (FS 69) to Wayah Bald. Drive about 4.5 miles on the gravel road and you will finally come to a parking area near end of the road, there is also a 180-degree circle up to the right from the entrance to the paved trail to the tower. It is a short walk. If you can walk to your car after Parkin at the mall, you can walk to the tower viewing area. Have fun.

What an awesome 360 degree view!

By smcdaniel |

The drive up to the top is not bad and from the top of the Mtn is good but take the time to walk up to the Tower. Man, what a mountain view from there! I thought I'd seen all the best views of the Smokies but this is far better. It's an easy walk too which makes it good for everyone!

Worth the anxiety

By Lisa W |

The drive up the mountain was extremely intimidating. If I’m being honest..my family and myself were very anxious at certain points as the road is very narrow so much so if another car attempts to pass we were praying. We even thought about turning around but that was impossible. Needless to say we made it to the top…went to the bathroom… and then enjoyed the breathtaking views. Oddly, going down the mountain was less stressful. Highly recommend.

Beautiful views!

By Babetha297 |

Great place to visit. Beautiful views at the top. Nice historic buildings on the way. Great grassy area for picnics.

Great day trip

By Stormy F |

One of the best day trips in the Franklin, NC area. The best view the mountains to be seen. You will enjoy the ride up also.

Pleasant Drive and Amazing Views

By RVnChick |

We are staying in an RV Park in Franklin and were looking for an easy drive to view local color. Wayah Bald is about a 20 mile drive (one way) from Franklin. Most of the drive is on paved road. The last 4.5 miles are dirt/gravel with significant dips, potholes and narrow lanes. Passenger cars can make it but having one with good clearance and suspension will make the drive much more pleasant and less worrisome. The views are worth the drive. Take caution....many of the downhill drivers are moving quite fast for the curves and conditions and take their half out of the center of the road. Pack a lunch....there are picnic grounds at the top.

Must see near Franklin, NC

By Barb D |

This is well worth you time for the expansive views. Unfortunately the tower burned down during last year's forest fires. However, the views are still fabulous. There are some short hikes in the area that are worth while, as well.

Don't miss this!

By Dabrielle W |

If you come in April/May bring a coat. This is so worth the drive! Beautiful views from the tower and surrounding area

Beautiful views

By Beth B |

This is a really nice place to stop at. The mountain views are beautiful. There are picnic tables and we enjoyed a lovely picnic here.

Amazing view

By Jessica |

We went on a weekday and there was hardly anyone there which made the views extra special. The gravel road to the top is narrow in a few places, but overall, feels safe to drive as a one lane road. The view from the top is worth the drive. The access road is closed in winter, though, FYI. We visited in mid March once and it was still closed for the season due to some icy weather.

Worth the drive

By 162aubreyh |

A spiritual experience for certain. Reset my system, went on the first day of Autumn weather, crisp bright and beautiful. Felt in a zen state after my family left. Amazing. Definitely go.

A Must See!!

By ahclark2016 |

I had some anxiety about making the drive to Wayah Bald. I REALLY REALLY don't like driving along cliffs w/o guardrails on very curvy roads. The fact that it is only 18 miles from Franklin but takes an hour+ to get to made me wonder what I was getting into. Not to mention I was carting around my car sick Mom. I decided to just take it slow like one review said, give my mom a barf bag, & (try to) enjoy the ride.
I guess because I expected the worse, the drive wasn't that bad. It was very beautiful. It was a Wednesday evening and we didn't pass anyone while driving up. The road wasn't that bad except for a couple of areas where it seemed to get a little narrow & there were a lot of potholes. I have a trailblazer so I could image that a smaller car would get bumped around if you tried to go faster. There wasn't many hairpin turns. We drove about 15-20 mph on the dirt road & hugged the inside of the mountain for what seemed like forever. We got to the top about 30 minutes before sunset w/ a non-used bag. The viewing area & tower is about a 500ft walk from the parking area.
The view & experience would have been more than worth it even if the road was bad. I can't explain it to you & pictures do not do it justice. You'll notice when you get out of the car the air is thinner, cooler (You may want to take a jacket if you plan to be there late). You are looking down on everything. You can see everything for 180 degrees. It is actually very intimidating you are so high up. When you climb the tower, you feel like you are on top of the world.
We found where the paths of the AT run through the tower. That was cool. My sons & I walked about 50 feet down the trail just to say we walked the AT. We only stayed as the sunset began & the sky began to change. It was beautiful. Even though I didn't think the road was that bad, I still didn't want to drive down it in the dark.
Definitely a MUST SEE if near the Franklin area. Absolutely gorgeous & amazing! Don't let the road scare you.

Excellent views in Fall time

By The_Crafty_Beer_Mermaid |

Many trees and leaves have started to change in this area and it was gorgeous to go look at them. It is a 4+ mile dirt and gravel road so it takes some slowing down and patience to get there but we did it in a regular car so it can be done ( you will just need a car wash afterwards).

Lots of great history to read about and only a short walk from the parking lot. It is paved on the walking to the actual tower portion.

Worth the trip

By AEASAGAFTRA |

A great view of the area. Also the trip markers and the historical information is very interesting. I would rank this with other great visual and historical American sites

Fogged In

By Dean_Amy-2004 |

We took the long, winding road to the lookout and were rewarded with a great view of fog. The road is well marked to the dirt road turnoff, but it gets fairly narrow most of the way up. Be cautious of driving any extra-large vehicles; a large RV would definitely be a challenge to not only make some of the turns, but it would be very difficult to navigate past oncoming traffic.
I can imagine the view would be spectacular on a clear day, but it was a huge disappointment to get all the way there and only be able to see fog. I'm rating it 3 stars for the potential and hope someday I will be able to see the amazing 360 degree view in person. If there is any chance of fog blocking the view, you'd be happier waiting for a clear day to make the trek.

Amazing view!!!

By OTRA2013 |

Don't let the last 4 miles of gravel road deter you. The road isn't that bad and awaiting you at the top is a breathtaking view of the mountains. There is a very short (paved) walk from the parking area.

A Stunning Vista of Mountains and More Mountains!

By Connie S |

Our group (ages 3 to 70 with one very poor walker) made it up the broad, paved trail at the top. We could have taken the wheel chair, but we chose not to. The view is spectacular with mountain upon mountain spread out before you. The entire family enjoyed the walk, the stone tower, the incredible views, and the information boards. The children were happy to learn that Wayah is a form of the Cherokee word for wolf. The gravel road is intimidating for people from Florida, but we are glad we slowly made it up the access road.

Amazing View!

By Jeff H |

Amazing view, well worth the drive. Short walk at top to tower, paved pathway. 360 degree view, beautiful. Drive there is beautiful through narrow valley on Wayah Road beside Wayah Creek. Once you turn on Forest Service road it becomes gravel, but is well maintained with plenty of room to pass anyone going the other way. Any type of car can easily make the drive. Usually not crowded at all, often we have been the only people there or maybe one other family.

Outstanding view

By Milton S |

Its worth the time to go and visit this place. Stay in Franklin NC and a short drive from any were in the city.

Awesome long range views.

By Victor K |

There is a long drive on the gravel road to the tower and a short walk with a gradual incline. The tower is very near the Appalachian Trail.. Awesome views of the mountains.

Great views

By Serena H |

At the top of Wayah Bald Rd. you turn onto the gravel access road to the top of the mountain. It is worth the trip especially during the changing of the seasons!

Worth the drive up

By Miller |

I'd put this on the list of things to do. The drive up was adventurous and fun. Also the Forrest Service road was a hoot. Its off to the left about halfway from the main road.

Curvy Ride Up with Amazing Views Across the Mountain Range

By LavFam |

Pretty popular site as you can tell by the amount of foot traffic and it connects up with the AT. Amazing view and well worth the drive up.

Definitely should be on your list of places to visit.

Worth it

By G5reviews |

The long windy road plus the additional 4+ miles of gravel road just about did me in. If you get car sick, take the Dramamine. The last 4+ miles is unpaved and bumpy. Watch the bumps. We were driving a Beetle and made it up the road just fine, but some of these "craters" were no joke. Use caution. The hike is a simple walk along a nice walkway. The views are AMAZING. Take your time enjoying the beauty around you. Also, you may see some hikers as the tower is in the middle of the Appalachian Trail. We saw 2 hikers while we were there.

Magnificent views

By rwpatton |

Wonderful views. The drive is on a twisty paved road followed by almost five miles of gravel road. The roads are fairly well-maintained but the gravel road can be washboard-y and somewhat rough in spots. When we were there on a beautiful Saturday in early June the mountain laurel was in bloom and it was not crowded at all. Highly recommended.

A must-see

By Joe58156 |

A 45 minute drive from Franklin (most of those minute on the last 10 miles, it seems) takes you to the tower. The 4-mile drive up the gravel road was easy!

Once there, you have a 100 yard walk up a paved path to the tower. If you are blessed with a nice day, you’ll have views of 30, 40 miles or maybe more (we were told sometimes you can see Clingman’s Dome). There’s also an information board, rest rooms, and access to the Appalachian Trail and the Bartram Trail.

A beautiful place!

Great View

By ajones0455 |

If you're in the Franklin or Hayesville NC area a ride to the top of Wayah Bald is a must. Wayah road can be accessed from highway 64 outside of Franklin or highway 74 heading into the Nantahala gorge. The road to the summit is gravel and wide enough to pass easily. On a clear blue sky day the views are great. Get out and enjoy!!

Not to be missed

By Bonnie P |

What a lovely old tower and a beautiful view. The drive up is always lovely and the short hike to the tower always a treat.

Great Views on a Clear Day

By Edistotiger |

If you want some great mountain views, this is the place to go. However, make sure it is a clear day or you won't see much. Be aware that once you leave the main road you go on a narrow gravel road for 4.5 miles with lots of switchbacks. As this is just a Forest Service road, it is very bumpy. Go slow!. Also recommend keeping your headlights on as you go up & down the road so others can see you easily as this road is very narrow. Once you get to the Bald, the short trail to the Fire Tower is paved and easy to walk on. Make sure to read the history of the Fire Tower; it is very interesting (the tower itself is on the National Register of Historic Places).

Worth Driving to the Top

By CZiegler04 |

We found ourselves visiting the Wayah Bald Lookout Tower quite by accident Sunday afternoon. We were searching for the Rufus Morgan Falls (which we NEVER found) and decided to take a slight detour. We drove and drove and drove some more, but the view was worth the drive. It was peaceful and so beautiful, and the abundant wildflowers in the area were buzzing with bees. The drive is actually less than five miles, and the gravel road is in excellent condition. The curving climb makes it seem much longer than it is, but don’t let that deter you. It’s free, and there’s hiking if you’re interested.

Stunning view!

By Pat S |

One of the few beautiful places you can drive to. Very few people there. Can be chilly so bring a jacket. Don't forget your camera. This is a truly awesome view. Definitely worth the drive up. For the more adventurous, try hiking up.

Great spot for a family visit

By partywithaka |

We took our family to the Lookout Tower. Spectacular. Very toddler friendly with restrooms and paved path that leads from parking area to Tower. View was incredible! Worth the drive up winding mountain roads.

Great Free Views, but at Price of Car Sickness

By Gail B |

Even though we were socked in with clouds and rain, there were a few breaks. The views were very nice. The warning I would give to others is that it is very easy to get car sick on the drive up to the Bald. You are about 1 mile up (5342 feet) and between the elevation and the extremely long and windy road, it could be too much for some group members. Car sickness will ruin the fun for those affected.

Awesome overlook 20 minutes outside of Franklin

By hlew123 |

At 5500 feet the views are endless. After a 10 minute drive to the lookout, walk about 5 minutes to the top.
This is one of the highest points in the area. Make sure to plan your trip on a sunny day, as there is often a very heavy cloud cover

Worth it even on a rainy day

By FLkasee |

This was a great stop!!! We drive out even though it was rainy and ended up timing it perfectly between two showers 😊 I was worried about making the journey on the gravel road in our dually truck but there was room to pass other trucks and cars.. the gravel road is pretty compacted and wasn’t a bad drive even in the drizzling rain. I’m hoping we have time to go back before leaving on a nicer day but wasn’t disappointed by the views we had between showers

Excellent views from here

By Ken S |

I enjoy going to Wayah Bald several times a year. Both the Bartram and Appalachian trails cross this mountain. It is off of Old Murphy Road, about fourteen miles from Franklin. You drive to the summit via a seven mile graded gravel road. I have seen reviews here that say it is difficult. Maybe if you are from the flatlands. It is a fairly well maintained road. I have never had a problem when passing another vehicle, going the opposite direction. Once at the top, there is a parking area with restrooms ( pit toilets though, rather smelly ) The path to the tower is maybe a quarter mile further up hill. Someone with a disability or the elderly could have difficulty. There is only a stairway to the top of the tower. Fantastic views on a clear day. It only open during Spring and Summer months. Closed in the winter.

Breathtaking

By Arleene W |

Had always heard so much about this place. My husband and I finally made a trip there. The views, as talked about, were magnificent. Amazing to be able to see such expansive sightlines.

A little piece of Heaven

By fionad1382018 |

On a clear day you almost can see forever. I never cease to be amazed at the shapes of the mountain peaks. The colors as the seasons change and the absolute silence. Just close your eyes and take a deep breathe then exhale your tension away.

Wow, just wow!

By Keith P |

Read some reviews that made us second guess wanting to do this based on getting there. Don't listen to those reviews. We made it there in a Nissan Altima with five passengers - no trouble at all. The 4.4 miles of gravel road to the top was a beautiful drive. Just take it slow and enjoy it. Once you get to the top the view is breathtaking!

By Dudette537 |

The views are spectacular from this lookout. After the fire last fall, you can see the new growth on the trees. While we were there there were several flowers blooming, with bees and butterfly's. the drive is steep, but can be done in a car easily.

Storm the Castle at Wayah Bald!

By Carl D |

Only a short walk from the parking area to the Old Stone Lookout Tower is well worth the winding drive to get here. The best of CCC Architecture and views with 360 degrees of mountain range and placards telling you exactly what you're looking at in the distance. The drive is long and winding up a dirt road, not for the faint of stomach, but the payoff is excellent...both the Appalachian Trail and the Bartram Trail pass through this spot. Great plae to pretend you're in a Highland Scottish Castle :)

Panoramic views

By Faye J |

Easy walk up to a lovely WPA built stone tower with 360 degree views. There are also places to picnic nearby.

Beautiful view

By GailK1975 |

The tower is in the process of being re built right now. The forest fires from last fall burned the wooden part of the structure!! The views of Macon County from up there are worth the pretty drive to see it. Cant wait to see it when they get it fixed.

top of the mtn

By Marianne J |

We loved the view and the trip up the mountain -recommend this to anyone -nice hike up the drive if you don't want to drive -this should be one of the top destinations in Franklin area

Breathtaking...

By Mary R |

This place has a very scenic drive to get there.. once there, you have Mountain views surrounding you in every direction.. There is a nice walk to the observation tower, where there is some history of the place... There are also a few other places to see, an old farm place and of course some more walking trails.. Definitely a family outing destination... Bring a picnic, and wear comfortable shoes..

Beautiful 360 degree view of Nantahala.

By bargin gal |

Just a beautiful, quiet place to go and get a 360 degree view of Nantahala. We came through on our hike back to NOC, a thunder storm was brewing and the sky was just glorious. Storms on one side and the sun and blue sky on the other. Once in a life time view.

Long & Winding Road to a Great View

By DrNickatNite |

If you're visiting the NC mountains, then even the circuitous drive is part of the scenic experience, but the view at the top is spectacular. We met a number of people who were hiking the Appalachian Trail, which runs through this point, so we didn't complain about how long it took us to get there.

Great get away

By ksasha |

Great place to get away and see nature for free. It is a long drive up the mountain on a main road. Make sure you have plenty of gas before traveling up the road. The view is beautiful in the fall.

Amazing view

By Susan K |

The view is amazing. The walk from the parking lot is easy. The drive was longer than expected but worth it. The road up is gravel and dusty. Some deep ruts so drive with care.

Great view....

By Janice B |

Loved the drive up to Wayah Bald,,,not far at all from Franklin....beautiful view of mountains with leaves beginning to turn....

WOW What a view!

By Ellen H |

The ride up there is a bit fun and dusty(when the weather has been dry) but the views are spectacular. As part of the AAT and Bertrams (sp?) Trail you see folks hiking thru. Don't stop at the first parking area...go just a few hundred feet farther and park in the upper area. Easy walk to the Tower.
Road accommodates 2 cars side by side - but be careful.
I saw cigarette butts on the ground - look around people - it's a national forest!!!

Worth the 23 min drive up!

By mrm1008 |

A 23-minute ride up a steep, rough, gravel road was absolutely worth it to see this view. About 10 degrees cooler, nearly a mile up and mountains for miles, this was a favorite stop on our trip to Franklin. Met a few adventurous hikers that opted to take this journey by foot; apparently great hiking trails here as per them. It is only a short 5 minute walk to the tower once you finally park at the top of the mountain.

Beautiful sunset and sunrise

By boyd40 |

Saw a beautiful sunset and sunrise after a tough hike from winding stair gap. The view from the tower is extraordinary and the recently refurbished tower is pretty

By darlenebillings |

The road from Nantahala up to the lake has 3 nice waterfalls and is as curvy as the dragons tail --- we call it the little lizzards tail. The trout stream is perfect as is the vista views from the tower at Walah Bald and over a mile high !!!!

Amazing views, fun drive, nice piece of history

By kats4098 |

I would personally rate this the number one attraction in Franklin! My husband and I stayed for 7 days on our trip, and this was my favorite place we visited. We followed the route suggested by the Franklin city guidebook, which took on a quite long, round-about drive through the countryside to reach the Nantahala gorge area, but it was a fun adventure, nonetheless. The road past the river and lake is a stunning drive in late October, and we stopped several times to take pictures. When we finally arrived at the road that led to the Fire Tower, we drove slowly up the narrow dirt road in case we met any cars coming back down- its a pretty tight squeeze when two vehicles meet, but it is doable. On the way up, you pass an old ranger station/house that's worth a look. The walk to the Fire Tower is short, and on a paved path. The view is simply breathtaking! Be sure to dress warmly, as it was windy and much colder on the top of the mountain! There are restrooms (outhouse-style) located just up the road from the parking for the tower, but it's a good idea to bring your own tp. Just beyond the restrooms is a grassy area with large stones, and picnic tables just past that. Even though it was cold, we enjoyed our picnic lunch in relative seclusion. Very few visitors were there on that Wednesday, and we even had the Fire Tower all to ourselves for about 10 minutes! If you are anywhere near the area, you will definitely want to add the Fire Tower and surrounding Nantahala area to your list of places to see!

Gorgeous views

By howilovetotravel1 |

A great alternative to Clingman's Dome. You have 360 degree viewing of the Smoky's. Worth the drive.

Every time I am in town I make the drive here!!

By Nicole A |

Gorgeous view! I went before and after the fire that burnt down the town and what a difference! I heard now they have a new tower built and the view is just breathe taking! Make sure to have a good vehicle to get up there, I don't recommend a nice car.

Gorgeous views

By Anne F |

The drive up is totally worth it - especially if you want to cool off. There must have been a difference of about 10 degrees in temperature from where the dirt road starts to the tower. Glad we did it. And kudos to the brave, athletic souls that actually hike the whole way!

Look out and hiking visits

By Charles H |

Actually my visits were in late 70's & early 80's. Vacation on Brush Creek and also trip to Worlds Fair? In Knoxville. Kids really enjoyed the visit and seeing me off as I hiked onto the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Also the old steel and wood fire tower along that trek.
I WILL RETURN TO WAYAH BALD AND GIVE A REFRESHED REVIEW (35-40 years fresher) Now I live in Cullowhee. Much closer than Albany, GA.

Wayah Bald

By Ted McKim |

This peak is just over a mile high and can be accessed via two routes: the Appalachian Trail or via paved Wayah Road and then about 3+ miles of graveled forest service road. (Wayah means wolf in the Cherokee language). Late October is a good time to visit and see the colorful fall beauty, but pick a clear cloudless day for the best views. At the peak is a converted fire watch tower for visitor observation providing nearly 360 degree views. And on a good day, one can see 50+ miles. If you like to hike, the AT can be used to get to the peak and most folks start where Wayah Road crosses the AT. Winter is also a good time to visit for better long range views, because the leaves are off the trees, but there can be occasional snowfalls. Ample parking exists at both locations, but if hiking plan on all day and bring water.

The views are breath taking

By hikinggirl70 |

Be sure to bring a camera first off!!!! The small walk to the tower is very easy on a paved path. Once you reach the top you will see the gorgeous view. We were lucky we went on a bright sunny day so we could see the mountain ranges for miles. I can only imagine how it must look when the leaves change. The view from the tower is amazing too. While we were there we actually met a few hikers from the AT trail and saw a couple get engage. Now the bad part, the drive to the tower starts off easy on a paved road but then turns into a gravel road with plenty of HUGE pot holds. I would not recommend driving a low car, we were in a Ford Explorer and had a few deep potholes that could not be avoided and felt the jarring. The ride to the tower is gorgeous though.

Off the Beating Path and a Nice Day Trip from Franklin, NC

By Terry S |

Had heard about Wayah Bald and the lookout tower and it being close to Franklin, NC and not a moderate to stenuous hike - my wife and I decided to check it out. It's a lot further out than what you may think and the dirt / gravel Forest Service Road is not bad - but slower going.

The tower is pretty cool, albeit not like the original as the signage says of it's past - but does give a pretty decent view of about 270 degrees. The north face is blocked by quite a few trees which may not be a problem from late Fall to early Spring when the leaves and other foliage is not in the way. Nice short easy hike up to the tower from the parking lot - which is not very big, but almost empty on our trip in late August (after school opens).

Looks like a lightning strike or fire happened towards the top of the bald sometime in the near past, as many charred trees are still standing up towards the ridge line on one face (looking south). With that - it did provide a clear view around the area.

The best thing was the change in temps for mid 80's in Franklin to low 70's up on the bald - which would make for some great hiking around. Since the Appalachian Trail and another known trail are close to the bald - those whom are more adventurous would like being able to check those 2 trails out - even for a short distance.

For a simple day trip - I'd give it 1.5 thumbs up; especially when it is much warmer in the valleys and being cooler up top.

Take your camera! On a clear day you can see forever!

Nice parking and a very short walk to this tower. Lovely views of Macon County and Franklin areas. Bring your cameras

Short walk .... tremendous views. Great for both sunrises, sunsets and all day in-between. If you visit Macon County ... you NEED to make your way here.

A must see!

By dpmartin70 |

I've been to this tower over a dozen times and it never get's old! The view is amazing! This is a must see attraction in this area! Don't miss this North Carolina treasure!

This Prize was worth the Drive

By James N |

At times going up the mountain on the dirt and gravel road, we thought we were never going to get there. But eventually we made it and found a truly beautiful sight. It's one of those "glad we did it"excursions. Probably wouldn't go back but glad we were there.

Great View

By Kenneth D |

Great view, very small 'hike'. Only about a 2-3 minute walk from the parking lot. Paved the entire way. This was worth the effort.

Powerful reality of fire danger!

By Sharon M |

This was a nice drive . Everyone should bring their children for an up close and personal reality of fire danger. Lovely views.

Beautiful Views, fun drive, gorgeous place

By Meander724425 |

The paved road to this place was fun but very curvy and winding, the road itself is fine just a typical mountain drive, coming down you may use your brakes a lot. The paved road leads into an unpaved road which we loved. It was so quiet and beautiful. It's well maintained but taking a SUV or truck would be best. The climb to the lookout tower is not bad. There is a circle drive we let the kids ride bikes, a great picnic area, 2 grills, a bathroom with no running water and it's just a neat place to explore. There is also a homesite on the way back down with some interesting history,

amazing views of at least 3 states

By onemichael |

Pretty easy to get to. The road becomes gravel for a mile or so but not too bad. You park in a decent lot and take a short walk to the tower. The views are spectacular. The tower roof was burnt off last fall but who needs it. The trees around it are burnt and dead and provide a somewhat eerie scene. But it is another spectacular view. Enjoy

Wayha Bald lookout tower

By Elisha A |

Could not find this place. Must not be in Franklin North Carolina. Poor directions. Need better description of where it is.

Good to go back

By Mongo1234 |

When our family started vacationing in western North Carolina about 35 years ago, our Sunday afternoon destination was always Wayah Bald. We would pack a picnic lunch and let the kids run around inside the grassy circle area. We went back today and found nothing has changed.
It is a 4 mile gravel road up to the bald from Wayah Road. The road is in need of some grading so take it slow. Once at the top there are a few parking spaces. There are picnic tables and grills at the circle. The lookout tower is a 1/4 mile walk up a paved path. The views from the tower are spectacular on a clear day as it was today. And since the Appalachian Trail crosses the bald, there is always a chance you will see a through hiker.
It is worth a couple of hours to visit.

Amazing View

By Rebecca W |

Beautiful ride through the countryside from Franklin to Wayah Bald. Once you reach the top there is a short paved walk to the Lookout Tower. The view is beautiful. You can drive (or walk) beyond the stop for the tower to a clearing which has a nice grassy area perfect for a picnic.

Short walk with Amazing Views!

By Kayla M |

This is a "hike" that anyone can do! From Franklin, it takes maybe a half hour to drive up, but its absolutely gorgeous. Once reaching the top, its maybe a 200 yard walk to the fire tower which provides 360 mountain views and an amazing view of Franklin. This is definitely for people who are not into hiking, but still want to appreciate the beautiful mountains here.

Breathe Taking View

By Warren75 |

After driving which seemed to be forever we arrived at an ample parking area. After a short walk we arrived at the tower and viewed the autumn leaves in full color. At 5300 ft and 50 degrees with a 20 MPH wind it was a bit chilly. There are a number of trails off the main trail leading to the tower. Rest rooms are available.

all time favorite

By Dustin W |

whenever i think of home i think of the Wayah Bald tower. its my favorite place to go when i need to just think. the views are amazing during the day but you haven't taken in the full potential of wayah bald until you visit at night on a clear night and see the bright, clear stars. with the silhouette of the mountain range in the near distance. the wooden roof did burn in the 2016 wildfires but its still beautiful. it shows that no matter what the little community of franklin goes through we can overcome. definitely a place to visit if you come to the mountains.

Piece of home

By Deago A |

I live just over the mountain in burning tw from my grammys front door it's an 8 mile hike up an over the mountain good place to go an relax take in the scenery an clear your head sounds of nature all around you

Great views

By John M |

When I was a kid, you had to hike far to get a view like this. Now, you can just drive right up. I love it. We have a very beautiful state!

Park and walk to the top.....

By bagelsnob |

Unless you are hiking the A.T., the lookout tower is a pretty reasonable walk from the parking lot at about 1/2 mile in length. Best to go on a sunny day, otherwise the tower views will be at best drab and at worst socked in with clouds. Views are of the surrounding Nantahala National Forest.

A real adventure

By FaithLadyMAC |

The trip up was breathtaking. Narrow winding mountain road with abrupt drop off. 4 miles nearest the top dirt road with minimal room, cars had to stop so oncoming traffic could go by. Pretty fall colors on the way up. Can not take pics though, no pull off. Clouds moved in so no view from the top, definitely a factor no one can control. Restrooms primitive quality at the top. Bald area surrounded by big stones and surrounded by a circular drive so easy to see. Did not do the tower part. Too scary a ride for me to consider again, although some said other roads are much worse.

4.5 miles of gravel road is a lot

By JandL51 |

We came here because my 85 year old mother was with us. She cannot do hiking and we read that from the parking lot to the lookout is an 800-foot paved walkway, which is true. She was able to handle it, and it is wheelchair friendly as well. The view is beautiful and you can see mountain ranges in three directions. However, while the initial drive from the main road is beautiful and newly paved, the final 4.5 miles is a narrow, treacherous and rutted gravel road that took us about 30 minutes to cover. We were in a regular sedan but I would recommend a pickup or 4-wheel drive for this road. We saw similar though admittedly not quite as majestic views from nearby places that were much easier to get to.

Appalachian Trail!

By tamera n |

What a surprise to drive then hike up to Wayah Bald Lookout Tower and read that I was standing on the Appalachian Trail! Wow! The view is magnificent, and in my opinion worth the peaceful, winding drive to get there. Simply stunning!

Beautiful Views

By David S |

We have made this trip several times. It is a long steep gravel road but it is more than worth the trip up the mountain. The views here at any season is fantastic. You'll not be disappointed. If you pack a picnic lunch there are tables at the parking area for a nice meal.

Exquisite View!

By CarMa555 |

It is a fairly easy walk to get to the look-out tower after parking the car. Once there, you quickly become enchanted with the panoramic view of the mountains. You may even meet some backpackers traversing the Appalachian Trail.

Awesome for ANYONE

By Kate J |

We drove up to the tower parking lot. Amazing views! My husband and I brought our 3 boys ages 10, 8, and 3. The walk is incredibly easy if you park in the top lot. My city slicker 3 year old survived. LOL. Take the gravel road ALL THE WAY to the top. I'm always nervous we are going the wrong way on our hikes and driving adventures. You pass several buildings and the power lines. Wow you can really see how high your climbing! Awesome for all ages and fitness levels. Also, bathrooms at the lot. We will explore surrounding trails next time.

Beautiful View!

By Carina W |

Definitely worth the drive - some nice little stopping points along the way (Old Ranger Station). My kids absolutely loved it. Not crowded at all and the short walk to the tower was a very easy one. Beautiful!!

Great Mountain Views

By burgosa631 |

If you are the kind of traveler that like mountains do not leave Franklin
without taking a drive to the wayah bald tower . the drive up the mountain to get to it is by itself an adventure. and then the views once you get there are amazing . you can really see far, best direction for pictures is south looking
towards Georgia . take your time once up there you will enjoyed .

A rough road but worth it!

By Debbie F |

This is a beautiful area to visit! The road to get there is not bad but there are a lot of hair pin turns. If you’re prone to car sickness you might want to take something before you go.

Before you get to the top there is an old ranger’s house that you can stop at. Make to check out the out house-it’s 111’ from the house. Heaven help those who really had to go in the middle of the night!

When you do reach the top, there are modern outhouses to use. A short walk up to the top to see at least three states-Georgia, South and North Carolina. We took our dog on a leash and saw others with their pooch.

Just past the turn around there are picnic tables to have your lunch or snack.

Don’t be deterred by the road-it’s not bad. The view from the top is worth it and the road up is covered with foliage.

We had our pick up but any SUV will make it. I wouldn’t take a luxury car, though!

Awesome views!

By Darlene B |

We took the shorter, pretty strenuous hike from Tellico Gap. It was a bit worrisome getting to the parking lot. The dirt road leading there has a lot of switchbacks and appears to be deserted. If you feel like you've gone the wrong way perhaps (like I did) keep going. As long as you're on Otter Creek Rd you'll get there eventually. Take the trail where there is a gate. The views are worth every breathtaking step.

Gorgeous Views

By Heather Iseminger |

Make sure you choose a day free from rain or wait for the clouds to break. The drive is winding, but don't let that scare you. The views were just gorgeous.

To say the view is timeless is an understatement

By HelenaAL2 |

For some the getting here by foot is a mission worth completion. For many, like us, the drive on the winding road and the last few miles of steep, rugged gravel road were a serious discomfort. The paved path up to the tower is a gentle overture to the wind thru the gnarly trees clinging to ground and pointing in all directions to the beauty below and afar off.
Don't miss a chance to experience this.

Top of the Clouds

By Victoria C |

Beautiful place however GPS mislead us we got a locals advice on how to locate the correct path. Once we found it it rained but we were able to experience what it feels like to be high up into a cloud high up into the mountain which was very quiet and peaceful would love to come back when it isn’t flash flood season to enjoy the panoramic views.

Great views on a clear day.

By Doubleplay4 |

Unless you are hiking up on the AT driving is easy and pretty straight forward on a dirt road. There's a short path to the tower itself from the parking lot. If it's a clear day long range views are amazing. Also on the way up or down stop by the old ranger station and read the history. Worth it if you are in the area.

One of the best views in the area

By Darren K |

Used to visit all the time when I lived in the area. Relatively easy drive up, short, easy hike to the tower, and it's simply a beautiful view.

Stunning views

By salinalocke |

Beautiful overlook of the valley! However the drive is very twisty and on a gravel road... keep going it’s worth it at the top! There are places to stop on the way up for hikes too!

Whether you like hiking or want a good family outing don't miss out on visiting this historical site.

Great mountain views, easy access

By _cobanco |

Very easy drive here from Franklin. The views today were a little cloudy yet still spectacular. Easy access to Appalachian Trail so expect to spend a little more added time since it's easy to follow. Yes, it's worth the drive time to see the views!

Highest point in far western North Carolina

By Pamela C |

As you ascent the well maintained, gravel road to the top of Wayah Bald, be sure to stop and see the picture boards and read about the people who, before automobiles, made the trek in mule drawn carriages to hold church services there at sunrise. The vista is magnificent.

Love the trip away

By Steffy S |

Nice curvy drive , only about 18 miles from Franklin, but takes 30 minutes, but that's ok. I like the short trail walk up to the tower, we have gone twice in 30 days, we went on May 5th and it started snowing while we were up there,it was funny, because when we got home it was 60 degrees. Just 30 minutes away. We always take pics. Anyways nice view of the mountains

A beautiful spot but a really long drive

By carynman |

We went up to the Bald last week while visiting Franklin. The drive up is extremely steep and is basically one lane so you really have to be careful. We enjoyed stopping at the old ranger station on the way up and the children loved seeing a real outhouse! The view from the top was lovely and the tower is pretty to see. You can see for miles and there is a map at the top of the tower that names each peak in the distance. There were hikers there as this spot intersects with the Appalachian Trail which was neat to see.

View of countu

By vickih8282017 |

Beautiful view of franklin and Macon county. Nice drive. Picnic area. Good for picture taking. Good trip for family.

Wow, what a view!

By BradandStacy41 |

At 5,342 feet, the lookout Tower is one of the best views in the Nantahala National Forest! It's just a short paved walk to the tower and when we were there, the Mountain Laurel and Rhododendrons were blooming. We met an Appalachian Trail Hiker who was drying out his gear from the rain the night before and spent some time talking with him about his adventure so far on the trail. The view is incredible and definitely worth the drive up the mountain on a gravel road.

A must see when coming to Franklin!

By dbw122984 |

This is an iconic scenic spot in Franklin to see the beautiful mountain views. The tower allows spectacular views, great spot for a picnic or to see a beautiful sunset! Its a decent drive up a gravel road, but worth the drive!

August 19 2016

By Dana E |

To get to the tower you travel a dirt road..lots of ruts.Once at the top the tower view is beautiful! It was a rainy day when we were there but we are planning another trip in the fall to see the beautiful colors!

Fabulous Scenery from High Up.

By rockdoctor48 |

This location is great to watch a sunrise or sunset any clear day. It is easy to get to for anyone. The Wayah Road uphill is somewhat steep but is worth the drive.
Coming downhill one day I saw a Timber Rattlesnake crossing the road so watch for the wildlife as you drive.

Amazing views!

By HappyTraveler915 |

So glad we made the trip up the mountain! It was a pretty twisty drive up and took longer than expected, but totally worth it. I agree with a previous reviewer that it is a challenge for people afraid of heights (really no guard rails all the way up), and I'll add that my husband and I were feeling a little queasy from all of the twists and turns on the way up. But, once you get to the top, it's worth it. Great spot to take photos and get out and explore. There's also a little ranger station almost at the top that is worth a stop. Really the only downside for me was an abundance of little bugs on the top of the lookout tower, but wondering if that was a seasonal thing.

a pleasant rewarding experience

By WilburNorthCarolina |

The view is always breathtaking even having visited the site many times. I do trail
maintenance on the Bartram trail which crosses the AT near the tower. I always
spend some time enjoying the view before going to work on the trail.

Stunning views of the Smoky Mountains and the Town of Franklin!

By Brad T |

This is the first place I visited when I moved to Franklin, NC in 2000, and I never get tired of going there, especially in the fall when the leaf looking is nothing short of spectacular!

Beautiful

By Anna L |

We went based on reviews and were not disappointed. It’s free, fun and beautiful. It you want to escape the tourist traps and enjoy beauty this is the spot to see. Great hidden gem.

Unbelievable views!

By Cheryl S |

The views from this site were absolutely amazing! Every direction you turned was just as pretty as the last. It was nice that the walkway to the site was paved and relatively flat, which made for easy access. It is quite a twisty drive on a narrow road, which you would expect going up the side of a mountain, but totally worth it!

A Long And Winding Road!

By RMDMarshall |

That leads to one of NC’s best views.
We decided to drive because the Holiday menu has been too good to resist and we never would have enjoyed it. Glad we did! The forest road was in remarkably nice condition and the day was unusually sunny for December. Even though it was past leaf season, Mid December proved to be a wonderful time to see for miles.
After an hour of relaxation at the tower and surrounding beauty, we sadly returned home.
Highly recommended for views rivaling any in NC.

Incredible view

By Jane O |

Nice drive to the parking area and easy hike to the top. Beautiful scenery and incredible view along the Appalachian trail. Well worth the trip

Great alternative to Clingman's Dome

By airpizz6 |

We tried to visit Clingman's Dome a day earlier. The access road was backed up and painfully slow. And the parking lot was a joke. Cars were parked a few hundred yards down from the lot. Did a U-turn and headed out.
The next day we headed west from Cherokee on US 19, then left on Wayah Rd toward Lake Nantahalla. Was a great drive. Stopped at Cooper's Creek Trout Farm. Several miles on a gravel road. Great for kids. Continuing on. Many rafts and tubes on the river. Beautiful views of the lake. About a third of the way from there to Franklin we came across the turn for Wayah Bald. Several miles on a lonely curvy gravel road. Not concerned about the road. More concerned that we might be in the middle of nowhere with no cell service. Felt better to find several cars at the parking area.
A short walk up to the tower for marvelous and uncrowded views. As others have mentioned, this may not be the best drive for those who suffer from motion sickness. But we enjoyed it thoroughly. Highly recommended.

Beautiful and majestic landmark.

By Eric B |

The labor and task of building the must have been a major project. Fire must have come through here in the past year and stopped at the tower. It must have had a roof at one time, but was burned in a forest fire. The wild flowers are beautiful. So many humble bees you can hear them. The road up is scary, but can be done with a 2wd truck or suv.

Top of the World!!

By Stephen S |

My wife and I were going to Murphy, NC and decided to check out the Wayah Bald tower. We were so glad we did! It is a drive, to be sure, and once you get to the entrance you still are not there, as you have to drive a few miles up the mountains on a dirt and gravel road. But WOW! It is worth it one you get there to see the view. Just make sure the day is not cloudy or rainy, as I could imagine you may be a bit let down. We were lucky, the rain let up for a few hours and gave us a fantastic view!

BREATHTAKING VIEWS!!

By TracyNCliff |

Something free to do and I could have stayed there all day if it hadnt been so cold! I would recommend taking a picnic lunch and making a day of it!

Beautiful place

By rwtaylor78 |

Amazing panoramic mountain views. Great place for a quick hike with incredible views. Highly recommend a visit.

A must to head up to!

By Breanarms |

When you're in the Frankin NC area this is a great place to visit. Enjoying the views from "high in the sky"! We weren't aware that this was a crossing for the Appalachian Trail as you climb toward the tower. Definitely a memorable landmark and memory. We hope that once this beautiful area has recovered more from the fires two years ago that they will bring a Nat'l Park office and gift area near. We tried to find a badge for the Balsam Trail but so far no luck. Great times and very clean with restrooms!

Great off the beaten track excursion

By UGA_guy_Athens_GA |

I was in the area on a short motorcycle trip and decided I must not miss Wayah Bald. I know it would be difficult for most motorcycles on a gravel road but riding a dual sport bike it was really fun riding up the mountain. It would be a slow but easy ride in a car or truck, for a forest service road it’s well traveled and maintained. There is parking and restroom at the top. A short easy walk to the tower and outstanding views. A great place to take the family and have a hike or picnic. A bonus, it’s free!

Spectacular Views in every Direction

Wayah Bald standing at 5,342 feet in elevation in the Nantahala National Forest use to be a Fire Lookout Tower for the Forest Service for many years. But now it is open except from January - April due to icy roads and possible snow. When planning a trip be sure to allow several hours. The Drive to the top of the mountain is about 8 miles long around a very narrow and extremely winding 2 lane road. Then 5 miles on a gravel and dirt road that is no less winding. So if you get the least bit motion sick be sure to pack something. Also be sure to have plenty of Water and snacks for there is no restaurants or places to find anything until you arrive back in Franklin. Once you arrive at the parking area you have short paved trail up to the tower. The tower has undergone some much needed renovations. The stone tower is 53 foot tall so use caution when climbing the stone stairs if there is any moisture on them it will make them very slick. There are many education markers to give you the history and other information. Sit back and take in the breath taking views. On a clear day you can see Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee. There are restrooms near the walking path to the tower but FYI bring some TP and hand wipes cause they run out fast. Also keep an eye out for Hikers who are hiking the Appalachian and Bartram Trails that cross the bald at the tower. Another thing to keep an eye out for is Wildlife. Beware of bears , snakes ect. it is the wilderness after all. This is an amazing day trip. Don't forget your camera and a light jacket as it may be somewhat cooler at the top and the weather changes at the drop of a hat !

Beautiful wedding venue

By esme2orenday |

We had a family wedding at this venue. The amazing views made for stunning wedding pictures. A storm came through before the ceremony, but everything worked out in the end.

Quite a trip to get there but worth the effort.

My husband and I went to the Wayah Bald Lookout Tower while we were on vacation in March of this year. It isn't the easiest place to find but your efforts are rewarded with unbelievable views and be sure to stop off at Wilson Lick on the drive up. It's a really neat spot with a vintage cabin that was used by park rangers many years ago. We would definitely make the trip again.

Stunning views from top

By William R |

It took about 45 minutes to drive up to the top but it was worth it. A little windy and cold at the top. We were the only ones up there when we went. Nice place to take the kids

Worth the drive

By Godby |

This place is worth the drive up the well managed dirt road. Once at the top it is a short stroll to the stone structure where you have clear views in all directions and the scenery is beautiful. We were there in August but I'd like to go back when the leaves are changing, I bet it is spectacular.

Beautiful hike

By Pam G |

Drove up the twisty road to the tower. If you get car sick not the drive for you. Beautiful view. You can walk up to the tower easy climb.

Nice views and great for Picking

By Ed C |

An old building and a great stopping place on the hiking path. There are generally a few people around so it is secure.

Beautiful vistas

By mitzibt |

My spouse and I drove up today as our Tennessee Valley weather is about 10 degrees warmer than usual for this time of year and I thought the wild azaleas might bloom early. These mountains are over 5000 feet and a season behind as the trees are budding leaves. No azaleas yet but breath taking views at every turn. The spring rains have produced gushing mountain streams and lush promises. Wayah Bald was named by the Cherokee Indians, meaning 'wolf' that once made their home there. I understand that the Cherokee hunted there and arrowheads found were eleven thousand years old. The road seems nicely grated flat and gravel covered. When once only 4-wheel drive could make the climb, you should be able to drive the family car though expect dust in dry weather. Plan to visit mid-June for a better chance to catch the woods full of azalea color!

Worth the effort

By journalmytrips |

Directions to this site can be confusing even when copying directions and using a GPS. But with perseverance we found our way. The paved road to Wayah Bald has many twists and turns and you wonder when you will find Forest Service Rd.69 when suddenly you see the sign. The road is hard packed but bumpy so take your time for it is a seemingly long 4 1/2 mile drive. At the top, there is a large parking area, picnic tables and toilets.
The walk to the tower is paved and not too steep. I would like to say that we visited on a beautiful day but it was misty though what we did see was worth the effort. The tower is not too high and if you decide against climbing the stairs the view is still good from the lower level.

220 yards from the parking lot.

By James H |

The five mile dirt road was not that bad in June and the old Ranger station about 3 miles in made for a nice break. The tower provides a wonderful view of the mountains and the drive up and back was dotted with spring flowers. Plan an hour and a half at the minimum to enjoy this secret. Hint: Since the path is paved to the tower 220 yards, it is accessible to the handicapped.

Worth the trip!

After driving up the 8-9 mile gravel road mountain in two cars with two young children and my 80 year old mother, pushing her in a wheel chair to the over view, we were not disappointed! The view is spectacular. Take some bug spray and stop along the way and have a picnic. Perfect day!

Bike trip

By Lori M |

NOT for street bikes. Road is ok for cars, but is tricky here and there to meet another one. Clay and gravel. View is spectacular!

Worth the Visit!

By Ron B |

We made the drive up to Wayah - honestly I did not find the road as challenging as some have mentioned. You do quite a bit of gravel and there are a few rough and harrowing spots but passable in all cars I would think. Once you get there you'll find a small parking area and pit toilets if you need them. Short walk up to the tower itself. The tower is a very cool stone structure. As of the fall of 2017 the roof that was burned off in the recent fire has not been replaced but no big deal in my opinion. The views are amazing. We were there on a clear day and some of the pics I took have become home pages on my phone. Definitely worth checking out if you have not been there before.

Wayah Bald

This should be on your list if traveling through or near Macon County, NC. The area has seen major improvements recently. The road in is slow and beautiful with old structures along the way. The scene from the fire tower is stunning. A great day trip.

Beautiful overlook with interesting history

By WB2OBX |

Beautiful drive up to the tower. Add driving time into your visit, as it took us a good 15 minutes each way on the rd to the tower. Plan ahead if you do not like to drive in the dark. You will see people parked at the trailhead which is paved and a short walk tower. If you keep driving up to the right there is a turnaround with an ok view if you can not walk to the tower and bathrooms with a larger parking area. Like many have said it is a narrow winding dirt rd up to the parking area so be mindful of drivers coming the other way. We did not have service on the way up so make sure you have written directions or a map in case gps doesn't work. the Ranger Lick station is worth the stop on the way up or down. It has a neat history and pretty scenery. The tower itself has some very interesting history as does the entire Wayah Rd area. There are some informational signs on the walk to the tower. It is best to go on a clear day, but we did not and it was still a beautiful spot. The pictures turned out great. On the drive back down we saw a mama bear and her cubs cross the rd. I recommend this stop if you are in the area.

WOW

By Karen W |

It was a crazy ride up the gravel road to the tower and a mildly strenuous walk to the tower, but WOW. The views changed with the clouds drifting by and made it somewhat surreal. I want to come back when the azaleas are in bloom but even with just spring green leaves, it was an amazing experience. A MUST DO!

Worth the drive

By EDF1958 |

I had talked myself out of going but got talked back into it thanks to the woman at the visitor center. The 4 miles of gravel road is very hard packed and not dusty. No problem in an 8 year old sedan. The view is amazing and it's so quiet up there. All we heard were the bees on the flowers. Go check it out!

Above The Clouds

By RickCreel |

It's nice to get up here just before sunrise. The clouds are below and you can watch the sun rise over the top of the clouds. I actually have time lapse video on my YouTube channel at "Roamin' the Mountains."

Couldn’t get there by car January 2020

By JAH |

Forest Service Road was closed January 19, 2020! We drove all the way there on Wayah Rd and the forest service gate was closed and locked at the top of the mountain where you turn to drive up Forest Service Road. We decided we didn’t want to hike the 5 miles to the top. We were very disappointed!

Great trip

By KristyMcCullers |

Easy to find, worth the drive. Beautiful views. Well maintained. It even snowed and selected for me.

Fantastic view but it was cold

By Mark E |

It's a bit of a drive up a gravel Forest Service road but worth the effort. The view is a fantastic as is the tower. There is a latrine style restroom so take some hand cleaner.

Excellent stop, beautiful views!!

By jhammLiveOakFL |

A must see!!!! Our family was visiting Clayton Ga and decided to drive up, it was worth the drive. We will do this drive again...! Perfect views, and perfect for pictures!

Some of the best views in the area

By N9cap |

Easily accessed, this tower has views in three directions. When the weather is great, the sights are incomparable.

Fantastic views

By FloridaNative1944 |

360 degree views. You can see the Smoky Mountain chain all the way to the northern end. To the south is a great view of Albert mountain and Standing Indian Mountain, all on the Appalachian Trail. The AT runs through the tower. Began a hike from here to Nantahala Outdoor Center in 1984.

Beautiful views, some fire damage

By Steve J |

The view of Franklin and the valley and all the surrounding mountains from what remains of the tower after a recent fire, and the ground level at the base of the tower, is spectacular, well worth the drive up the quite narrow windy dirt road (a bit nerve-wracking when opposing traffic appears). It should be even better when the fire-destroyed interpretive signs on the tower are replaced (hopefully they will be).

Awesome view!!

By James C |

The wife and I drove up to the look out tower today. The view is out of this world.
Caution!!! The road is really rough. Lots of pot holes. Drive it slow, it is well worth it!!

Very cool, but strange

By Rachel F |

Such an awesome view from the tower!!! We were literally in the clouds, even though it was a sunny day. It was really strange to see one side of the mountain burned away, but the other side left completely untouched. Really cool experience, but I wish I'd have thought to bring some trail magic for the AT hikers.

Must See

By JuneNCrealtor |

If you are in the area this is a must see attraction. You can see for miles up there. There will be a little bit of a hike but smooth sailing on the way back to the car. Worth the hike and its really not bad at all. It is a gravel drive all the way up.

Breathtaking!

By Peggy P |

My husband and I drove up to Wayah Bald on one of our visits to Franklin. The view is out of this world. On a clear day it seems you can see forever. The ride up is a little curvy but not too bad. I recommend this as a must see when in the area. You won't be disappointed.

Go one time

By dkpruitt |

You really should go see the view from that vantage point at least one time. Nothing to do there but quite a view.

Long drive and even longer hike, but worth the effort

By Michael K |

We drove up and it was foggy, rainy and windy, but after waiting about ten minutes the clouds cleared up a bit and the view was amazing. The pictures, as usual, don't do it full justice. Its a panoramic view of mountains all around.

Both the Appalachian trail and the Bartram Trail take you up to this point and it is believed Bartram came up here during his travels in the 18th century.

Historic stone tower built by CCC, beautiful mountain view

By Susie G |

We visited the tower May 7. There were only a few other people there. It took a long time to get there from the main road because about four miles of the road is gravel. The road is in pretty good shape, but there are some holes and washboard areas. So, I had to drive slow. I really enjoy seeing areas that the CCC created. This tower is beautiful. It has very good concrete steps to the top of the tower. At the top of the tower, I could see beautiful scenery in all directions. There were signs to identify the places in each direction. On our way back down the gravel road, we stopped at a lovely roadside historic area, Wilson Lick.

Spectacular View!

By NCEmie |

This was a spur of the moment trip up the mountain. And yes, it is quite a drive up a dirt road to get there. It was a well maintained road and easy to drive. The wildflowers were beautiful all along the route. It was not the ideal weather day, but the view was still breathtaking! I would love to go again on a clear day in the Fall. I imagine how spectacular it could be!

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!

By jannabreton |

The trip to the top was great. Yes the road is curvey and the gravel road is narrow, but what do youe expect?, You are traveling to the top of a mountain. Beautiful clear day, blue skies. I want to go back and see the sunset. Worth every second. On the way down we stopped at the Wilson Lick Ranger Station. I love seeing buildings that take you back in time. A lot of scenery along the way. I'm sure in the spring or even the fall the trees are really something to see.

Interesting place to visit

By norme-ormond |

On a clear day it's a great view from here. We met some Apalachian hikers there. It's about 5 miles of gravel road once you turn off Wayah Bald road. Be patient and drive slow!

View makes it worth the dusty ride up.

By Lawrence P |

Just under 14 miles to reach it from US64 and the last 4.5 miles is an unpaved mountain national forest road, but not a bad drive except for the dust. The Appalachian Trail passes through Wayah Bald. The fires of 2016 burned off the roof of the observation tower but you can still choose to go up and the forest is already healing itself, not detracting at all from the views.

Wayah bald way.

By LightPacker535989 |

Great place and wheelchair accessible! AT and Bartram trail cross here. If you want a challenge, park on the paved road where the AT trail crosses and hike up to the tower. A nearby bald is a nice hike but the top has no view and cell towers ( you'll see the sign when driving up to Wayah).

Nice drive up to Wayah Bald, Then just a short walk up to the tower

By LadynNC |

The views from Wayah Bald Lookout Tower are incredible. You have a wonderful 360 view. There are maps in the tower that show you what mountain or city you are looking at. Just find the hump on the map to identify the city or mountain.

Long trip with an awesome pay off

By Jaimeow |

First of all, you have to drive about ten miles around a mountain to get to Wayeh. If you can handle the ride, the destination is totally worth it. You can see as far as South Carolina and Tennessee on a clear day. There's a reason this place was chosen as a lookout for the early forestry service, the view is simply astounding. Bring your camera!

Could not find

By Mountainman827 |

Drove around Franklin per Gps instructions and ended up in residential area. Finally gave up and went downtown for some shopping

Easily accessible mountain views

By Monica Leavell |

The road to get to this spot is harder than the walk to it itself. It's a gravel road you'll be on for about a half hour but I drive a Civic and can do it just fine :P At the end of the road, the walkway to the tower is paved, so it's wheelchair and stroller accessible. I'm a wedding photographer who photographed a wedding up there once, it was just beautiful.

Nice view

By Hanna D |

We went in April and it was extremely windy and cold. We didn’t have any issues with GPS as other have stated. A was a beautiful sight to see.
