Hongcun and Nanhu Academy are places you must visit.
Nanhu Academy is a major tourist attraction in Hongcun Scenic Area and was built in the late Ming Dynasty.
At the end of the Ming Dynasty, people in Hongcun built six private schools on the north bank of Nanhu Lake, which were called "Yihu Six Academy". During the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty (1814), it took four years to merge the six academies and rebuild them into a large-scale private school named "Yiwen Family Academy", also known as "Nanhu Academy".

If I had gone to school here, I could brag about it for the rest of my life.
Nanhu Academy is an ancient academy with traditional Hui style architecture, also known as "Six Academy of Yihu Lake". It is a private school built with donations from the Wang family. Children with the surname Wang can study here for free.
Hongcun classic attractions, worth a visit, it's a good experience to be a student
The Hui-style village and the academy highlight its unique temperament. Thumbs up.
It can be regarded as an educational base in the village. It is said that a few years ago, this was a primary school classroom!
The fire prevention notice board at the entrance of Nanhu Academy is also deliberately made to look like a book! There is a brief introduction to the history of the academy next to the hallway at the entrance of the academy!
Zhidao Hall is where teachers give lectures, and there are tables and chairs. Many tourists also come here to let their children sit on the desks and bamboo chairs to feel the characteristics of the teaching environment of Nanhu Academy!
Behind Nanhu Academy is a large square courtyard, and the houses on the side have been turned into Nanhu Academy of Calligraphy and Painting, which serves as a literature and history exhibition area.
There are many free tour guides in Hongcun. When they explain to the tour groups, you can also follow and listen. It is very nice to walk to a building and listen to the explanation. I didn’t take many photos of Nanhu Academy, so I took two photos standing at the entrance of the academy.
This one is average. I guess it’s the last one. There were a lot of tourists, so I didn’t pay much attention.
The sun shines in the main hall. Seeing this scene, I envy the students in ancient schools, who can bask in the sun, breathe fresh air, and study in this spacious hall. But I don't know what will happen when it rains or snows, or when the summer heat is overwhelming.
It is said that people with the surname Wang can go to school here for free. The area of the academy also shows the importance that the ancient Hongcun people attached to education.
There was nothing to show, no cultural heritage, so it felt meaningless and I left quickly. I personally feel that the 104 yuan ticket to Hongcun is not as worthwhile as the 10 yuan ticket to Chen Clan Academy in Guangzhou. However, the Hui-style buildings along the way, with white walls and black tiles, are still worth appreciating. There seems to be no difference between the buildings inside and outside Hongcun. It is difficult to find toilets in the scenic area, there are few signboards, and there are only a few trash cans. The few places where you can see the scenery are mostly occupied by students sketching, and electric cars in the scenic area honk at will. Hongcun, I personally do not recommend visiting.
The ancient academy is full of age, and there are classrooms for students of different ages. There is also a playground for students to play in, which is our modern playground. The academy is much larger than expected, and there is also a residence for the old commander. The whole set of facilities is very complete.
Every time I walked into a courtyard, I would sigh, the patio is so beautiful! The stacked wooden eaves formed a wavy outline, forming a regular rectangle. The contrast of light inside and outside the house made the sky particularly bright, like a vivid framed painting. I told my parents, look at other people's ancestors, building some beautiful houses, so that they can benefit future generations. It seemed that an exhibition was being held at that time, and I also sat at the wooden table to pretend, imagining that the students in the audience were shaking their heads and reciting "When people are born, their nature is good, and their natures are similar..."
The gray stains on the white walls are the result of time. They distinguish them from the bright new houses and give them a sense of historical weight.
I was standing in Nanhu Academy. There were many tourists taking photos by the lake outside, but there was no one inside the academy. I looked up at the tall plaque with the words "Weiwei Guohua" and then at the tables and chairs with no one sitting on them. The extremely quiet environment made me yearn for the sound of children reading aloud in ancient times and the majesty of the teachers knocking on the tables and hands with rulers. All of that is gone!
After crossing the bridge of Nanhu Lake, we arrived at Nanhu Academy. To visit these cultural buildings, you still need to listen to the tour guide to understand some things you don’t know. It is still very helpful. You can choose some older elders. Generally, those with experience will talk very excitingly. When I looked up, I found that there were scenes carved in detail on the door beams. I have to admire the craftsmanship of the ancients.
Turn right after leaving the inn and the first stop is Nanhu Academy. Nanhu Academy is located on the north bank of Nanhu Lake. It was originally six private schools built in the late Ming Dynasty, known as the "Six Academy by the Lake". In the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty (1814), they were merged and rebuilt into the "Yiwen Private School", also known as the "Nanhu Academy". The rebuilt academy consists of six parts: Zhidao Hall, Wenchang Pavilion, Qimeng Pavilion, Huiwen Pavilion, Wanghu Tower and Zhiyuan. It has white walls and black tiles, clear water and blue sky, and the environment is very elegant.
Zhidao Hall is a place for lectures. Wenchang Pavilion is where Confucius' tablet is enshrined, and students pay homage to Confucius. Qimeng Pavilion is where students learn to read. Huiwen Pavilion is where students read the Four Books and Five Classics. Wanghu Tower is a place for sightseeing and resting in leisure time. Gion is the inner garden.
Nanhu Academy is an ancient academy with traditional Huizhou architectural style. Sitting at the desk, before I could fully experience the cultural atmosphere of ancient students, another wave of tour groups arrived...
Nanhu Academy is located on the north bank of Nanhu Lake. It was originally six private schools built in the late Ming Dynasty.
The pink walls and black tiles reflect the blue sky, and the environment is very elegant
Strolling leisurely in the alleys, the leisurely feeling is so strong that it makes people intoxicated.
The mottled walls are very old.
The local private school of Hongcun people still retains its original appearance.
Crossing the painted bridge, you will reach Nanhu Academy. In the late Ming Dynasty, people in Hongcun built six private schools on the north bank of Nanhu Lake. In the 19th year of Jiaqing, the six schools were merged and named "Yiwen Family School", also known as "Nanhu Academy". Located by the South Lake in Hongcun, it was a private school for Hongcun people during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. There are guides at the entrance of South Lake to help explain.
We chatted and looked around Nanhu Academy slowly, and it really felt like "traveling in a painting".
Nanhu Academy, as the place where the children of Hongcun were enlightened, also reflects the importance that the people of Hongcun attach to the education of future generations.
Although there are only tourists, you can still feel the reading sounds of the former academy.
The courtyard inside is quite large, with a very ancient architectural layout where you can appreciate the architectural style of that time.
The carvings on the porch of the academy are very interesting, like ice cracks. But from any angle, they are composed of countless "人" characters, reminding the students of the academy that "only those who endure hardships can become successful people". The academy is a "cool in summer" type, and it was a little cool when I went there. I guess it must have been a pleasant thing to study in the academy in the summer before.
Nanhu Academy is a private school for Hongcun people in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is located by the Nanhu Lake and is just across the arch bridge. It is best to claim a guide at the entrance of Nanhu Lake, and there will be a tour guide to help explain. We didn't claim a guide, so we walked in and came out.
Nanhu Academy on the edge of Nanhu Lake. It is said that the people of Hongcun attached great importance to education. Wang Daxie, who served as the Cabinet Secretary of the Qing government, the Minister to Britain and Japan during the Republic of China, and the Acting Prime Minister, came from this academy.
It was almost evening when we arrived at Nanhu Academy. We happened to meet a Hongcun staff member leading a group of people from other places to visit and learn, so we listened to the explanation. In fact, the stories of these old buildings are worth knowing. It would be better if there were some more meaningful explanations for tourists to understand.
I came here during the May 1st holiday in 2012. A private school for Hongcun people.

The academy on the edge of Nanhu Lake was a private school for local people in ancient times. It was also used as a school in modern times and was later protected as a cultural relic.
Nanhu Academy is right by the lake, a must-go place for tour groups. I went in three times following the guide's explanation.
Nanhu Academy is located in Hongcun. It is an ancient academy with traditional Hui style architecture.
The buildings in Hongcun are very historic and worth remembering.
It is a small village, but there is also a college, which shows that education is given great importance here.
On the playground of Nanhu Academy, a 200-year-old tree stands in the center. Before 1994, this was Hongcun Primary School, where students from the village studied.
You can go in and take a look, sit in the school and take a photo!
Nanhu Academy has an irreplaceable position in Hongcun. It is said that a high-ranking official born in Hongcun proposed to fund its construction. Later, it developed into a place for the enlightenment education of local children in Hongcun. There is also a complete funding system to subsidize those talented Hongcun students to go out to study and obtain fame. Nanhu Academy faces Nanhu Lake, and the scenery is quite good. It seems that the feng shui is also good. I don’t understand this. This is what they said. In it, you can feel the atmosphere of respecting Confucianism and Taoism by the ancient sages.
Nanhu Academy is located on the north side of Nanhu Lake and was built during the Jiaqing period.

There is nothing special about this academy in Hongcun, and there is nothing to see inside.

Nanhu Academy is the first building in Hongcun and is a private academy in the village. Being a merchant and a Confucianist is a major feature of Huizhou merchants. They have received a good Confucian education since childhood. "Without poetry and books, one cannot show one's family honor, and without diligence and thrift, one cannot manage one's life." This is the unswerving way of managing a family that Huizhou merchants adhere to. Many Huizhou merchants also spared no expense to build their own academies and schools to revitalize culture and education, which is enough to show that Huizhou merchants value education and respect etiquette.
A relatively representative building with a large area, carved beams and painted buildings, very simple and ancient. You can worship Confucius
The strength of a family is inseparable from a school. This is Chinese culture.

The academy is no longer as lively as before, with only tourists coming and going.

This is like a ancestral hall with several rows of tables and chairs inside!
Nanhu Academy is the former school of Hongcun. Now Hongcun Primary School has moved to the road from Hongcun to Lucun, about 20 minutes away.
Not far from the entrance of Hongcun is Nanhu Academy. The students here should be children from the village. The academy is simple and generous, and the environment is quite good. It is built in a village in a painting. The academy is not very large, and there are desks and other things inside. It is still nice to walk around and have a look.
