Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder

The Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder is located on the cliff at the northwest foot of the Lotus Peak. It is a steep and precipitous orange path with more than 100 steps carved out of the stone wall. Looking from the opposite Aoyu Cave, the path is close to the abyss, like a long ladder leaning against the cliff, often surrounded by clouds and mist, and very dangerous. This is the famous "Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder". At the exit of the Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder, not far from the "lotus stem", there are two huge stones, one shaped like a turtle and the other shaped like a snake, and the two stones are parallel. The two turtle and snake stones are just at the entrance of the ladder, like guarding it, so it is called "Turtle and Snake Guarding the Cloud Ladder".

The Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder is located in the Yuping Scenic Area of Huangshan Mountain in Anhui Province, on the cliff at the northwest foot of the Lotus Peak. The Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder is a steep stone path of more than one hundred steps carved on the stone wall. It passes through two rocks and goes down. Looking from the Aoyu Cave on the opposite side, the path is next to the abyss, like a long ladder leaning against a cliff. It is often shrouded in clouds and mist and is very dangerous.

This is also one of the filming locations for the movie "Little Flower". When I watched this movie as a child, I saw Liu Xiaoqing carrying Tang Guoqiang on a stretcher and climbing over the hundreds of stone steps. Her knees were rubbed bloody by the stone steps. It was this scene that scared me so much that I couldn't sleep at night and left an indelible scar on my young heart.

This is one of the traffic jams in Huangshan. I came here again in early 2024. I took the Yuping Cableway from Ciguang Pavilion up the mountain and took the Yungu Cableway down the mountain. I was stuck here for almost an hour.

The Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder is a series of steps on the cliff at the northwest foot of Lotus Peak in the Yuping Scenic Area of Huangshan. It is recommended to prepare a trekking pole, otherwise it will be a torture for the leg muscles.

It is said that the vertical inclination reaches 70 degrees. Although I have confidence and preparation, it is still shocking to witness this scene with my own eyes. After crossing the Aoyu Peak and stepping into the downhill path, on the way, I suddenly found a colorful ribbon floating in the towering ridge on the other side of the canyon on the right. The dark green ridge is tall and steep, and faint white clouds float between the slightly vicissitudes of the peaks. The scene is extremely dangerous. The ribbon runs from top to bottom along the ridge and turns to the cliff plank road on the left at the waist. There are steel railings and rope railings on both sides of the cloud ladder. Facing such a steep and dangerous cloud ladder, I dare not be careless at all. Holding the guardrails with both hands, I have to sit on the ground and rest for a while every ten steps to ensure that I am full of energy.

When we were about halfway up the mountain, our physical strength began to fail. Our legs felt like they were filled with lead, our breathing became rapid, and our chest felt stuffy and short of breath. We had to ensure safety in our minds, so we took the approach of sitting down to rest after climbing five, six, seven or eight steps, before our legs and feet became sore. We also moved our climbing position away from the railings on the edge of the cliff and towards the ropes on the side of the rock wall. Perhaps it was the lack of oxygen in the mountains. Every time we tried our best to breathe, our chests still couldn't get enough air, so we had to sit and rest for a longer time to relieve the discomfort. We followed each other step by step, encouraging each other. Although we were occasionally terrified, we still overcame the danger and finally reached the top.

By Forget more |

To be honest, if you go up the front mountain, walking down this section is quite exciting. When we go up the back mountain, this section is uphill, which makes us feel much better mentally.

By DeLia Jie |

The road is narrow and steep, and there are many people. You need to queue up and go up slowly. The scenery is beautiful when you reach the top.

By Yingge Feiyang Song |

The Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder should be the "One Line of Sky" of Huangshan. You can try it on a sunny day. Don't climb it if it is cloudy and rainy. It is very steep and the stone steps will be very slippery when it rains. It is very dangerous. It is not easy to climb the One Line of Sky if you have a lot of luggage. For girls, it depends on your physical strength. It is quite exciting to challenge it, but I remind you that safety comes first.

The Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder goes down first and then up, and you can view the Aoyu Peak from different angles. From one angle, you can see the amazing sight of "Aoyu eating conch". Below there are also pictographic stone landscapes such as an old monk in meditation, frogs hunting, a golden turtle exploring the sea, a tortoise and a hare racing, and a dolphin stone.

Finally I got to the top, more than 200 steps, so tiring! Hundred-step Cloud Ladder, I have seen you before.

By Rabbit |

The Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder is indeed very steep. Looking back, it is still very scary. It is a steep cliff and you cannot be careless at all. The lady who came down the Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder was so scared that her voice was shaking... The most beautiful scenery is on the dangerous peaks (borrowing a famous quote from Mount Lu here, haha). The scenery is still nice after climbing up.

By August |

I personally think that the Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder is a bit exaggerated. It is neither dangerous nor high. If compared with the similar ones on the way down the mountain from the new entrance of Tiandu Peak, it is actually very ordinary.

By Ci_ninon |

Once you climb the Hundred Steps Cloud Ladder, you're done. Only when you climb it will you understand that this is the normal route of Huangshan. It is notoriously steep, and is actually the signature of the front mountain. After climbing the Hundred Steps Cloud Ladder, I felt that I was very close to the Welcoming Pine, but the road was long and there was still despair that I couldn't see the end. Looking at the Hundred Steps Cloud Ladder on the cliff, I was scared to death.

By Stone |

The Hundred Steps Ladder is a typical narrow strip of sky, especially when you look down at the clouds from a high point, it is a bit dizzy. But in fact, there is no particular fear when walking on it, as the guardrails and stone fences on both sides are very well protected. However, looking back at the zigzag ladder coming down from the Aoyu Cave, I am a bit scared.

By Electric Fishing |

The hundred-step cloud ladder rushed up and passed by. We were swept forward by various one-day tour groups, and various voices spoke the same tour guide words - I wrote down one sentence: Going up the mountain is like the Olympics, and going down the mountain is like the Paralympics. I have a deep understanding of it!

By Coca Cola Party |

It's a relatively steep staircase going up, and there are pine trees and little monkeys on the cliff.

By osprey |

The Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder is actually quite steep, but after coming down from Tiandu Peak, the slope feels just average.

By Xiaoyige |

There are 218 steps in the Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder. When you climb to the middle, you can't see the end, which is a bit frustrating. There are many tourists around you who are out of breath and lack strength. However, the tourists who have been climbing up and down are very friendly and encourage each other. No one will laugh at you for not being able to climb up. I kept going and didn't look back, and finally I climbed to the top.

By Sakura~Maple fox |

The dangerous path opened between two huge rocks is incredible. There are more people than ants!

By Gao |

People with acrophobia should be cautious. In fact, I should be thankful that I was “going up” the Hundred Steps Ladder, not “going down”. The road is narrow and steep.

By Watching the clouds roll in and out |

Going down the Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder, there is a "Turtle and Snake Guarding the Cloud Ladder" at the entrance. The name means a turtle and a snake are literally performing their duties on both sides of the cloud ladder.

This is the filming location of the episode "Ronghua" in the famous "Xiaohua" N years ago. "The hard bones bloom, and the drops of blood dye it red." The scene of Xiaohua, played by Liu Xiaoqing, carrying a stretcher and kneeling up the mountain moved many people. It is said that it was so difficult to shoot this scene that it was called "Star Avenue". I didn't feel it when I walked there, but the photos I took later looked very steep.

Looking back at the Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder, I saw that the long mountain path spiraled upwards, becoming even steeper.

By The Wind in the Quiet Valley |

On the way from Lotus Peak to Aoyu Peak, when you see the two big rocks of turtle and snake, you have reached the Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder. Walking the Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder from Lotus Peak to Aoyu Peak is going down, but when you look up and see the steps of the Aoyu Peak not far away, you can't help but be shocked: the deeper you go now, the higher you will have to climb later!

The Hundred Steps Ladder is really difficult to climb. It is very steep and long. If you are not energetic, it is better not to climb it. It seems that Huangshan Scenic Area has built a tunnel or something. If you don't want to climb the ladder, you can take the tunnel, which is more labor-saving.

In November 2014, Beijing was on holiday for the APEC. In order not to add to the traffic congestion for the government, I decided to take a self-driving tour in Anhui, with Hongcun and Huangshan as the main destinations.

Huangshan is a 2-day tour. On the first morning, we arrived at Huangshan. Because the Ciguang Pavilion cable car station was under renovation, we chose to go up the mountain from Yungu Temple. The cable car queue was 2.5 hours.

After getting off the cable car, the mountain road was undulating and it took more than 10 minutes to walk to Shixin Peak, then to Heihusong and Guangmingding. After checking in, we passed Beihai, Xihai, Paiyun Tower, Feilai Stone, and watched the sunset over the West Sea.

The next day, I tried to watch the sunrise at Guangmingding, but failed. Then I walked down the mountain, passing by Aoyu Peak, Bubuyunti, Lotus Pavilion, Welcoming Pine, Banshan Temple, Ciguang Pavilion and other scenic spots. I was so tired that I felt my calves were turned to the front.

Huangshan is really beautiful, but unfortunately I was in a hurry and didn’t get to visit it all.

After coming down from Yuping Peak, we walked back, passed Yuping Station, and then climbed westward. We finally reached the most tiring section of the day, the Baili Cloud Ladder. As the road was very narrow, people going up and down the mountain would be stuck together. It should be said that it is still quite steep. The road is not very wide, and you have to crawl carefully here. There is a scene in the movie "Little Flower" where Liu Xiaoqing carries a stretcher to treat the wounded of the People's Liberation Army. It was filmed here. It seems that filming is really not an easy thing. I really saw that the road is halfway up the mountain. There is such a ladder cut out on the Lotus Peak.
