Baili Landscape Gallery – Baihe Gorge

百里山水画廊-白河峡谷

Baihe Gorge is a river canyon that runs from Baihebao Reservoir in the northeast of Yanqing County, through Huairou, to Miyun Reservoir. The upper half of the canyon is from Baihebao Reservoir to Tanghekou in Huairou. Baihebao Reservoir is the first scenic spot, followed by Xiaoshuikou, an important pass of the Great Wall of Ming Dynasty.

Introduction

  • Attraction Location: Huairou District, Beijing (北京市怀柔区白河峡谷), approximately 80–90 km northeast of central Beijing along the Baihe River (白河) valley.

The area has been admired for centuries for its dramatic cliffs, clear waters, and lush forests. Recently, it has been developed into a protected scenic corridor emphasizing eco-tourism and river valley exploration.
  • Architecture: The area is mainly natural, with minimal human-built structures. Wooden observation decks, eco-friendly trails, suspension bridges, and small pavilions have been constructed to allow safe exploration and photography without disturbing the natural environment.
  • Cultural Value: The gorge embodies the traditional Chinese concept of “Shanshui” (山水, mountains and water), often represented in classical Chinese paintings. Artists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts are attracted here to capture the poetic landscape, contributing to cultural and ecological tourism.
  • Other Information: The gorge features river rafting, small waterfalls, dense forest hiking trails, and serene lakes. Wildlife such as birds and small mammals inhabit the forested slopes. The Baili Landscape Gallery is surrounded by the Baihe River, and the local government has done a good job in environmental protection and leisure facilities. It is worth visiting all year round. It is recommended that tourists who visit the gallery consciously protect the environment and take away the garbage! !

Baihe Gorge is a river canyon that flows from Baihebao Reservoir in Jiuxian County, northeast of Yanqing District, through Huairou, to Miyun Reservoir. Its main canyon section is in the area of Huairou Liuxin Road. There is a viewing platform overlooking the Baihe River's big bend. The scenery is very magnificent and shocking. However, the mountains here are high and the roads are dangerous, with many bends and steep slopes. The road surface is not bad, so you can only drive there by yourself. If you encounter a sea of clouds, it will be the most pleasant opportunity.

Baihe River is a long river flowing from west to east, passing through Yanqing and Huairou, and merging into Chaobai River. Wherever Baihe River flows through can be called Baihe Canyon, not a specific place.

The photo was taken in the Baili Mountain and Water Gallery Scenic Area. You can find it by searching "Deep Valley and Secluded Mountain" on the highland map. The water is clear and the scenery is beautiful. You can barbecue by the river.

On March 11, 2017, we drove from Tianjin to Baihe Gorge. The navigation was not very good. We drove into Beijing's Fourth Ring Road and then returned to the Sixth Ring Road, which took an extra hour or two. Along the G111 Beijing-Jiaxing Line, the up and down routes are separate, and you can see the scenery along the way. However, it was very windy that day, and it was cold in the mountains, so it was not very suitable for sightseeing. The navigation was located at Baihe Gorge in Liulimiao Town. When we arrived at the navigation location, we found that there was no entrance. We might have gone to a fake Baihe Gorge. Then the navigation was located at Baili Mountain and Water Gallery. Because there were few tourists in this season and few cars on the road, it felt very good, but the trees and grass had not sprouted. All the farmhouses in the scenic area were closed. It is said on the Internet that Baihe Gorge is suitable for barbecue, but no place for barbecue was found. .

I climb mountains everywhere. I was originally taking an old man and an old lady to visit the Baihe Canyon, but I found a mountain that I could climb. It's not high, 540 meters high. But the scenery is quite good. Mark.

The Great Wall stretches across the mountains, with a few white clouds floating over the towering peaks. The mountain stream is even more dangerous, and the road is completely carved out of the cliff, with one side close to the cliff and the other side facing the abyss, and the Baihe River flows through the abyss. On the side of the road near the cliff, there is a huge stone platform. Climbing up the steps, you can see the Baihe River like a green silk in the vast mountains, bypassing two adjacent mountains. The lightness and etherealness are breathtaking, and you can't help but sigh at the magic of nature.

Baihe Gorge is more than 100 kilometers away from Beijing. It enters the gorge from the northeast of Baihebao Reservoir Dam in Jiuxian County, northeast of Yanqing, through Huairou, to Miyun Reservoir. The total length of the gorge is more than 100 kilometers. The upper half of the gorge is from Baihebao Reservoir to Tanghekou in Huairou, and the lower half of the gorge is in Huairou and Miyun, crossing the Yunmeng Mountain Scenic Area. At the junction of Huairou and northern Miyun, there is a forked road connecting National Highway 111 through Liuli Temple, running through the north and south of Huairou. If you start directly from Beijing, take the Beijing-Chengde Expressway, exit No. 15 Yangyan Road, and take the watershed tunnel and Liuli Temple to Tanghekou. There are few villages in the gorge and no complete buses, so there are fewer tourists. The original natural landscape is quite intact. There are cliffs on both sides of the gorge, and the Ming Dynasty Great Wall stretches through the mountains. The mountain road twists and turns, like a hundred-mile gallery, with shocking scenery.

I came here once in winter. Walking on the ice, I could see under the water. It was quite a feeling.

Baihe Canyon is a natural canyon with its original features well preserved. The roads along the canyon are steep, mountain springs converge into mighty rapids, and the bizarre scenery of nature is quite shocking, making it suitable for self-driving tours.

The most beautiful road in northern Beijing that I have walked so far

The winter in Beijing this year is relatively warm. Although we have entered the coldest days of winter, the Baihe River has not completely frozen. But I think it is good this way. There is water and ice, which is varied and not monotonous.

The Baihe Gorge stretches from Yanqing to Huairou and then to Miyun. The mountains are steep, the rivers are winding, and the vegetation is lush. In Miyun, there is a scenic spot called "Beijing's Yarlung Zangbo Big Bend" called "Jingdong First Bend". There are roads connecting the two routes along the way, so you can stop wherever you see a good view, which is very pleasant.

The scenery here is so beautiful that I really want to set up a table and chairs on the shore, chat with friends, or be alone, close my eyes, lie in a hammock in the sun, and enjoy the tranquility. I'll wait for next time, maybe this time next year.

As the altitude drops, some wide areas get more sunlight, and the leaves have not fallen yet. Going into the woods, the dense yellow leaves are very beautiful.

It is still very nice to go to Baihe in winter. Walking along the way, there is ice everywhere, a bit like a glacier... It is worth going together... I went there in February 2014, sharing photos

This is a natural canyon with its original appearance well preserved. Baihe Canyon is known as the "Hundred Miles Gallery" for its magnificent scenery. In addition, there is a magnificent view similar to the "Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon" in the valley called "Yuntai Lansheng", which is even more worth visiting.

I went to Baihe in winter and it was a great experience, especially on the ice in the middle of the river. The thrill was great.

The innermost corner of the Baihe Canyon rafting is suitable for camping in spring, and the scenery will be even more beautiful if there is a heavy snowfall!

This is a great place for barbecue, with a large area, few people, and convenient accommodation. Since this is a newly built folk village, the house layout is basically the same, and the price is about 100 yuan per room. Farmhouse meals are a la carte, with roasted lamb and barbecue stoves provided by villagers. It is recommended to bring your own equipment so that you can choose your favorite place to barbecue. Breakfast is 10 yuan/person (a bit expensive), and reservations are required on weekends. The hot water is solar-powered, which is not very convenient. It is estimated that the rafting season in summer will not feel slightly cold like in spring.
