Beijing Summer Palace Marble Boat

颐和园石舫

The marble boat in the Summer Palace in Beijing is also known as the Qingyan Boat. It is decorated with marble patterns and has brick carvings on the top. It is exquisite and gorgeous. It is a famous water architectural treasure in the Summer Palace. When it rains, the rainwater falling on the top of the boat passes through the hollow columns at the four corners and is discharged into the lake through the four dragon heads on the hull. The design is very clever.
The cabin on the boat was originally an ancient building, but when the British and French allied forces invaded, the Chinese-style cabin on the boat was burned down. In the 19th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu (1893), according to Empress Dowager Cixi's intention, the original Chinese-style cabin was renovated into a Western-style cabin with colorful glass inlaid on the windows. It is the only Western-style building in the garden. It was named Qingyan Boat, which means a quiet river.

Stone boats. Empress Dowager Cixi would rather build stone boats than update the equipment of the Beiyang Fleet. It was natural that the Battle of the Yellow Sea suffered a disastrous defeat. It was a pity for the naval officers and soldiers who fought so hard.

The Beijing Summer Palace Marble Boat (pictured), also known as the Qingyan Boat, is located in the northwest of Kunming Lake, on the western bank of the Wanshou Mountain. It was built in the 20th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1755). The boat is carved from huge stones and is 36 meters long. The two-story white wooden structure on the boat is painted with marble patterns.

A stationary cruise ship was a place for ancient emperors and Empress Dowager Cixi to eat and rest.

The Stone Boat is located at the lakeside at the west end of the Long Corridor. It is a large stone boat, which means "clear sea and peaceful river". It is also called Qingyan Boat. It is located in the northwest of Kunming Lake, on the west bank of Wanshou Mountain. It is the only building in the Summer Palace with Western style. Its predecessor was the release platform of Yuanjing Temple in the Ming Dynasty. When Emperor Qianlong built the Qingyi Garden, the platform was changed into a boat and renamed "Stone Boat". The Stone Boat is 36 meters long and is made of marble carvings and piles.

A large ship that never moves, decorated in a completely Western style, is placed in the northwest of Kunming Lake, and it blends in well with a group of ancient Chinese buildings. It is even more interesting in the red, yellow and green colors of Chinese buildings.

Qingyanfang was originally called Shifang. It is one of the famous landscapes in the Summer Palace and a famous water building in the park. It is OK to look at and take pictures from the outside, but there is nothing to see inside.

I personally find it amazing how a stone boat can float on the water and rain can flow out from the middle of the stone pillars.

It is simply a viewing point for integrated sculpture art.

It's a pity that I couldn't go up there, and I didn't see any clear introduction to the layout inside. I could only look at the exterior and take photos.

Welcome everyone to visit my Beijing travel notes. This is my two and a half months of internship in Beijing. I will answer any questions you have. Please leave a message below =v=

You could ride in the Qing Palace once, but it is old and in disrepair and can only be used as a photo background. It is very unique. You can only experience the modern cruise ship.

Compared with the small model of Peking University, the marble boat here is amazing. In winter, if you walk along the long corridor along the frozen lakeshore, you will find the marble boat at the end. The cold color and the cold stone complement each other.

Listening to the explanation, I feel it is ironic that the Navy’s military funds were used to build this, implying the hope that the Navy will return safely...

Qingyanfang is a large stone boat, which means "peaceful sea and peaceful river". It is the only building in the Summer Palace with Western style. Its predecessor was the release platform of Yuanjing Temple in the Ming Dynasty. When Emperor Qianlong built Qingyi Garden, the platform was changed into a boat and renamed "Shifang". I stayed with the tour guide for a while at that time. He explained it in detail, but now I can't remember anything. In short, the emperor often came here to hold birthday banquets for the empress dowager and liked it very much. There is also a large mirror on the boat, which is convenient for leaders to observe their subordinates.

Qingyanfang, commonly known as Shifang, means "clear sea and peaceful river". It is the only Western-style building in the Summer Palace. Shifang has two floors of boathouses, which are made of marble carvings. As the old saying goes, water can carry a boat, but it can also capsize it. The Qing Dynasty was afraid that its country would be overturned, so it built a stone boat that could not be overturned. However, it capsized in the end.

The Marble Boat in the Summer Palace in Beijing is a famous scenic spot in the garden, which perfectly interprets the meaning of the ancient poem "The boat drifts by itself at the wild ferry without anyone on it", proving that the water of Kunming Lake is alive and can be traveled by boat.

May I ask the flying snow: Who are you for? Yesterday's love is left, but the old people are gone. The cold chrysanthemums are hard to find, and the tears are shed on the empty branches without dreams. The footprints left by stepping on the snow cannot be hidden, and the sparse shadows also herald the arrival of spring.

The marble boat is an element found in many gardens, implying peace and tranquility. This marble boat is very unique, combining Western oil paintings with classical pavilions.

The Summer Palace, an ancient imperial garden in Beijing, formerly known as the Qingyi Garden, is located in the western suburbs of Beijing, 15 kilometers away from the urban area, covering an area of about 290 hectares, adjacent to the Old Summer Palace. It is a large landscape garden built on the site of Kunming Lake and Wanshou Mountain, modeled on the West Lake in Hangzhou, and drawing on the design techniques of Jiangnan gardens. It is also the most well-preserved imperial palace and garden, known as the "Royal Garden Museum", and a national key tourist attraction.

The Shifang, also known as the Qingyan Fang, is located on the west bank of Wanshou Mountain in the Summer Palace. It was built in the 20th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign (1755). In 1860, when the British and French allied forces invaded, the Chinese-style cabins on the boat were burned down. In the 19th year of Emperor Guangxu's reign (1893), according to Empress Dowager Cixi's intention, the original Chinese-style cabins were converted into Western-style cabins and named Qingyan Fang, which means "a peaceful river".

The stone boat in the Summer Palace is as high as a two-story building and is carved from a whole piece of stone. To its east are Tingshao Pavilion and Baizhang Pavilion, and to its south is a large Kunming Lake. The tour guide said that in order to celebrate her 50th birthday, the Empress Dowager Cixi ordered the construction of the Longevity Garden. She asked her personal eunuch to prepare for this. When the personal eunuch saw that it was the Empress Dowager Cixi's errand, he knew that the Longevity Mountain opened up by Emperor Qianlong in the past should be changed into the Longevity Garden. Because there was not much money in the treasury at that time, the military funds of the Beiyang Navy were misappropriated for construction. Later, the Empress Dowager Cixi's birthday came. She led all the officials out to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the lake and mountains. Walking to the west end of the corridor, I saw a large stone warship with stone cables and stone cannons on it, which was very majestic, and the muzzle was facing the Longevity Mountain. The Empress Dowager Cixi was annoyed when she saw it: "Why built such a monstrosity here? Tear it down quickly!" "Your Majesty, please calm down. We can't do without this warship. Otherwise, the navy's military expenditure will be bad..." The personal eunuch was just saying this when the military minister came up and said, "Your Majesty, this is just a facade, please don't mind it." The Empress Dowager Cixi understood it in her heart, but she felt that this warship was too ugly in the Summer Palace, so she said, "Take away the cannon." The ministers all understood that what the Empress Dowager Cixi wanted was a carved building and a painted boat so that she could drink and have fun. So the stone cannon was dismantled and rebuilt into a very luxurious and spectacular stone boat. This is the origin of the stone boat.

Legend has it that it was built with embezzled naval funds to celebrate Empress Dowager Cixi's 60th birthday, which led to China's defeat in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895. However, the marble boat in the Summer Palace in Beijing has made a great contribution to the scenery of the Summer Palace. The exquisite marble boat attracts countless tourists every day.

The inspiration for the Stone Boat comes from the saying “Water can carry a boat, but it can also capsize it.” A cruise ship made of stone - for the rich!

The Marble Boat is the only Western-style building in the Summer Palace. It is said that when it rains, rainwater will flow into Kunming Lake from the hollow stone pillars, but it never rains.
