Summer Palace - Suzhou Street

颐和园-苏州街

Suzhou Street is a shopping street built on both sides of Houhu Lake in imitation of Jiangnan water towns. It was built in the Qianlong period in imitation of the Jiangnan water town style. It was a water street specially for the emperors and empresses of the Qing Dynasty to go shopping. During the Qingyi Garden period, there were various shops on the shore, such as jade and antique shops, silk shops, snack shops, teahouses, gold and silver jewelry shops, etc. The shop assistants in the shops were all dressed up as eunuchs and palace maids. The shops started "business" when the emperor was on a tour. Dozens of shops on the shore of Houhu Lake were burned down by the powers in 1860. They were rebuilt in 1986. It is the only copy of the ancient "palace market" in China.

The first attraction after entering the North Palace Gate is Suzhou Street, a shopping street built along the Back Lake of the Summer Palace in imitation of a Jiangnan water town. The prototype of Suzhou Street is the Qilishantang, the first street in Suzhou, which was supervised by Bai Juyi when he was the governor of Suzhou. During the Qingyi Garden period, there were various shops on both sides of the Back Lake, such as antique shops, jade shops, silver shops, silk shops, tea houses, and snack shops. The shop assistants were all dressed as eunuchs and palace maids, and they would open for business when the emperor was on a tour.

During the Second Opium War in 1860, dozens of shops along the shore of Houhu Lake were burned down by the British and French forces. The current landscape was rebuilt in 1986.

There are four attractions in the Summer Palace that charge separate admission tickets, and Suzhou Street is one of them.

Suzhou Street in the Summer Palace is located inside the North Palace Gate of the Summer Palace, very close to it. It is a street built in the style of Jiangnan water towns, with dyeing workshops, oil mills, money bureaus, cake shops, etc. It was a place for emperors and concubines in ancient times to have fun.

Suzhou Street is a very beautiful place, with a very distinctive architecture.

By John |

In the cold winter, the water surface is frozen, making it a great place for ice skating!

By A little flower |

The royal family in ancient times really enjoyed themselves. They wanted to enjoy the scenery of Jiangnan in the capital, so they sent people to imitate it and built a lot of buildings. However, the craftsmanship of ancient craftsmen is still amazing!

By Fantasy Snow |

There are few people on Suzhou Street in the morning, and the flowing water under the small bridges is very pleasant. I am afraid that even the real Suzhou today rarely has such tranquility.

By Every day is sunny |

This is a shopping street built in the Qianlong period to imitate the Jiangnan water town. Maybe because it was still early, most of the shops in Suzhou Street were not open yet, and it was quite deserted. In fact, there were shops selling small accessories, specialties and restaurants. I don't understand why they had to sell extra tickets.

By The road is too long |

The scenery is very similar to Nanjing Confucius Temple, very beautiful - small bridges, flowing water and houses.

By Windmills fly into the sky |

When I went there, half of Suzhou Street was under repair (early June), and the other street (compared to the Long Corridor and the 17-Arch Bridge) was relatively deserted.

There are a few shops open for business, but there are relatively few people.

It was not easy for Karl Lagerfeld to move Suzhou Street here because he liked Suzhou. I also guess that Karl Lagerfeld also came here by boat when he came here for vacation.

Suzhou Street is also included in the pass, but not in the ticket. It is recommended to buy tickets via WeChat, and you can check the ticket by scanning the QR code directly, which is very convenient.

Welcome everyone to visit my Beijing travel notes. This is my two and a half months of internship in Beijing. I will answer any questions you have. Please leave a message below =v=

If you are tired of visiting the Summer Palace, you can go to Suzhou Street for dinner. This is much better than the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. Suzhou Street was also built in imitation of Jiangnan at that time. You can experience the garden thousands of miles away without leaving your home.

Maybe there wasn't much to see at this time, most of the shops were closed, and the road was very narrow. If there were too many tourists, it felt like someone would fall into the river at any time.

Suzhou Street is also known as the "Buying and Selling Street". It was built in imitation of the Jiangnan water town - Suzhou. It was burned down by the British and French allied forces in 1860 and rebuilt in 1986. The shops now open are special tourist souvenir shops.

Suzhou Street was built during the Qianlong period in imitation of Suzhou City Water Street. It is a common "one water, two streets" pattern in small towns in the south of the Yangtze River. It is said that there were so many shops at that time that all walks of life were covered. The sellers were played by eunuchs, and the buyers were played by palace maids, to entertain the emperor and his concubines.

On the streets of Suzhou, the shops with green tiles, gray bricks and white walls are mostly plain and elegant, while the archways are tall and eye-catching, embellished with the rich colors of northern architecture.

I personally think it's quite beautiful, especially when the lake is frozen in the winter. Fools from the south especially like to look at the frozen lake, because they have never seen ice before, haha, so they think it is very beautiful. The water is very clear, and has a crystal clear texture.

By Huahua |

Suzhou Street is not as big as imagined, it is very small. Standing on the river bank, tourists can see the panoramic view on the bridge.

By Muzijiuri |

It's pretty good. In winter, it freezes and there are several layers of ice. The well-preserved ruins can be regarded as a small market. There are food, playthings, and things to take away. It's just like shopping in the countryside now...

The natural environment is very good, with a river below, buildings in the middle, bridges on high ground, mountains, and trees, all of which are very tall, so they appear blue when reflected in the river...

The ticket price seems to be 10 yuan or something, but it is worth a visit anyway. It is basically a miniature version of Suzhou's small market.

Near the North Palace Gate of the Summer Palace. It is also part of the Summer Palace. However, you need to buy an extra ticket. You can take a boat tour.

By Muzi Lismile |

(Need to buy tickets separately)Combination tickets are available.

By Small ears. |

I think Emperor Qianlong built such a street in Dayuanzi because he loved Jiangnan so much. He was really willful.

By She doesn't understand↗ |

The scenery of Suzhou Street is very beautiful. There are many unique shops where you can buy souvenirs. There is also a special snack shop. The waiter’s shouting is quite entertaining. After strolling around Suzhou Street, we took a boat directly to the 17-Arch Bridge. The scenery is really beautiful and worth a visit!

Suzhou Street has a long history and is located in Beijing. There are Suzhou Street in Haidian District, Beijing, Suzhou Street in the Summer Palace, and seven Suzhou Streets in Beijing. In the past decade, with the construction of Zhongguancun Science Park, some buildings and shops, science and technology buildings, etc. have been rebuilt in some sections of Suzhou Street, making the ancient street gradually prosperous again. Now Suzhou Street is a comprehensive and prosperous commercial street integrating science and technology, food, books and education.

After entering Beigong Gate, you won't have to walk very long to Suzhou Street, which is a shopping street built to imitate a Jiangnan water town. Its prototype is the Qili Shantang in Suzhou, and it has a Jiangnan flavor.

By Wang Tuantuan-Ai Yangyang |

Suzhou Street gives you a sense of déjà vu as if the emperor was cosplaying the Suzhou street scene for trading and entertainment. There are many shops along the lake and two streets, including restaurants, teahouses, pawnshops, banks, jewelry shops, pharmacies, dyeing workshops, printing houses, official uniform shops, weaving houses, Pingtan halls, pastry shops, snack bars, etc. They are all antique buildings, decorated with lanterns, dragon flags and other elements.

By September Day |

There is a street behind the Summer Palace in Beijing called Suzhou Street. It was built in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty according to the streetscape of Jiangnan, so it is called "Suzhou Street". There are many shops along the street, pavilions, towers, bridges and flowing water, which is completely the style of Suzhou gardens, making people feel like they are on the streets of Suzhou.

By Anky |

Suzhou Street is one of the paid attractions in the Summer Palace, but it is also the most worthwhile one. I went there early and entered the palace from the north gate. It was very quiet and harmonious with the people skating on the frozen lake.

By Stewing a goose with an ice cart on its back |

I still think the Suzhou Street on the bridge is beautiful, imitating the Jiangnan water village, with some small shops below. I guess the emperor loved the Jiangnan water village so much that he sent his subordinates to build such a place, which was too willful.

By Rise from Fire |

Suzhou Street is also known as the "Buying and Selling Street". Suzhou Street is a shopping street built on both sides of Houhu Lake, imitating the Jiangnan water town - Suzhou. There are various shops, such as jade and antique shops, silk shops, snack shops, teahouses, gold and silver jewelry shops, etc.

I went there in 2006. My phone was 300,000 pixels. I went there with my sister.

By Walking like a leisurely |

As soon as you enter the South Gate of the Summer Palace, you can see Suzhou Street, which has the feeling of an ancient town. Classical pavilions stand along the river and are shaded by green trees. It is very beautiful.

By Cape of Good Hope |

Suzhou Street is located in the north of the Summer Palace. It was a commercial street built in the Qing Dynasty in imitation of the Jiangnan water town - Suzhou. It was rebuilt in modern times, as the old one had been burned down during the Eight-Nation War. There are shops on both sides of Suzhou Street, such as silk shops, tea shops, gold and silver jewelry shops, snack shops, etc. When we went in, some were already open, while others were not yet open. We did not stay long and went straight to the Wanshou Mountain inside!

By Mr. Yu's Xiao girl |

When Emperor Qianlong visited the south of the Yangtze River, he liked Shantang Street very much, so he built a Suzhou Street when he returned to Beijing, but it was later destroyed. He left another Suzhou Street in the Summer Palace. Suzhou Street is on both sides of the Summer Palace, with green water in the middle and shops on both sides, which is very impressive. But of course it cannot be compared with Shantang Street, and it is only for tourists at night.

By Light blue |

They are quite old, and the water is not clear. I think it is better to just look at it from the shore. There is no need to spend money to go in.

North of the Four Continents, continue north along the road and you will reach Suzhou Street. Suzhou Street is also known as the "Buying and Selling Street". Suzhou Street is a buying and selling street built on both sides of Houhu Lake in imitation of Suzhou, a water town in the south of the Yangtze River. During the Qingyi Garden period, there were various shops on the shore, such as jade and antique shops, silk shops, snack shops, teahouses, gold and silver jewelry shops, etc. The shop assistants in the shops were all dressed up as eunuchs and palace maids. Walking among them, it feels like being on the banks of the old water town in the south of the Yangtze River.

Suzhou Street is a shopping street built in the style of a Jiangnan water town. The prototype is the Qili Shantang, the first street in Suzhou, which was built by Bai Juyi when he was the governor of Suzhou. The shop assistants in the shops are all dressed up as eunuchs and palace maids. The shops open for business when the emperor visits. (Baidu Encyclopedia) It happened that I visited Qili Shantang Street when I visited Suzhou last year. Suzhou Street always lacks a bit of the Jiangnan feel. However, the biggest feeling I have is that the emperor was too good at having fun.

By Sea Breeze Boat |

Suzhou Street is a major attraction in the Summer Palace. It was built by Emperor Qianlong. In addition to presenting the style of Suzhou streets, he also asked eunuchs and palace maids to dress up as merchants to sell goods, creating a real market atmosphere. You need to buy a ticket for 10 yuan to enter the street, but you can see the whole picture on the bridge. It was winter when I went there, and the river was frozen.

By Cat walking on zebra crossing |

Suzhou Street, also known as "Buying and Selling Street", is a shopping street built on both sides of Houhu Lake in imitation of the Jiangnan water town of Suzhou.

The snow that fell the day before left a touch of snow on Suzhou Street because it was on the shady side. Suzhou Street was even more charming under the snow.

By lukefish |

All the small shops on Suzhou Street are built along the river. There are no guardrails on the riverside. Students should pay attention to safety if there are many people. We entered the park relatively early, so there were not many people. The river had frozen after the snow in the previous two days. The blue sky, the red lanterns, and the white river surface were beautiful.

By Shirley Sydney Jam |

Suzhou Street is usually as boring as its origin.

However, due to the snow in the previous two days, the originally wide river in Suzhou Street also became the "thousands of miles of ice and thousands of miles of snow" described in the poem.

The characteristics of Jiangnan and the scenery of the north can only be cleverly integrated in places like Suzhou Street in the Summer Palace.

On the third day of the Lunar New Year, most of the shops along the Suzhou Street were closed.

The few shops that are open sell some common tourist souvenirs.

Far less intriguing than the building itself

By Listen to the Waves |

There is a Suzhou Street on the right side of the exit, which has a Jiangnan charm. Don't be careless and go out directly. It is very pleasant to walk and rest on Suzhou Street after a day of fun. This is also the reason why I recommend entering from the East Palace Gate and exiting from the North Palace Gate.

By lam-fin |

There are shops on both sides of Suzhou Street selling travel souvenirs, and all the staff are wearing old-fashioned clothes, as if they have traveled through time.

By Ding Ning |

Actually, it is a place to buy souvenirs, and you have to buy a ticket separately. I read in the guide that it is not worth seeing, so I didn’t waste my time and money, and just took a picture.

By Momo~ |

After going down Wanshou Mountain, the last place is Suzhou Street. It was built by the emperor for people to experience folk life. It is really small and far from the real Jiangnan water town. Now many shops on Suzhou Street have been closed.
