Zhengyang Gate

正阳门

It was first built in 1439 and was originally named Lizheng Gate. It has a history of nearly 600 years and is the symbol of old Beijing.
One of the “Nine Gates of the Capital”, Beijingers affectionately call it “Qianmenlouzi”, and it is also the only relatively well-preserved old city gate in Beijing.
Zhengyangmen consists of three parts: the city tower, the arrow tower and the barbican. The barbican has been demolished. The city tower and the arrow tower are separated on both sides of Qianmen Street.
The city tower is near Tiananmen Square. Climbing up the tower, you can learn about Beijing’s history and customs in the exhibition halls on each floor.

It is the northernmost end of Qianmen Street. You can't go upstairs, so you can just look at the exterior and take pictures. It has been well restored. I remember when I went there in 2005, this place and Qianmen Street were still in a shabby state. I walked there this year and it seems to be in good shape.

The classic architectural complex of Qianmen in Beijing includes Zhengyangmen, Zhengyangmen Arrow Tower, Wengcheng and Qipan Street. Now Qipan Street and Wengcheng have been submerged in history. Only Zhengyangmen and Arrow Tower remain.

The sense of the capital city comes naturally, with gorgeous archways and tall gray city walls. It is a good place to go. Next to it is Qianmen Street, where you can go shopping.

You can see the Zhengyangmen Arrow Tower when you get out of Qianmen Station on Metro Line 2. Almost all the gates in Beijing have been demolished, with only two or three remaining. Deshengmen and Zhengyangmen have long lost their city walls and look like they have been renovated. The big fence blocks people from getting close. In this thousand-year-old capital, there are fewer and fewer historical sites, either demolished or over-developed.

I took a picture when I passed by, and I felt that there was not much difference whether I went upstairs or not.

Zhengyangmen, also known as Beijing's Qianmen, was the south gate of Beijing's inner city during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Now only the city tower and arrow tower remain. It is the only relatively intact city gate in Beijing.

The rebuilt reinforced concrete structure and the suspended five-arched archway have long since become history. The three large characters "Zhengyang Bridge" are inscribed on the archway, recreating the archway that was once the largest, most exquisite and most spectacular in the capital. However, it is just a replica of the original. The ancient monument left behind by people hundreds of years ago disappeared into history as early as the 1950s along with many ancient buildings in Beijing.

It is right outside the subway station. The building is very majestic. After seeing it, you will see Qianmen Street, Dashilan and many small alleys. If you are tired of shopping, you can find a teahouse to rest or a snack bar to eat some special snacks. You can spend most of the day slowly.

Walk to the end of Qianmen Street and you will see Zhengyangmen. It looks deserted in winter and you are not allowed to enter. You can only look at the exterior.

Zhengyangmen and the Forbidden City were built in the same period. There are two towers, one is the Zhengyangmen Tower and the other is the Arrow Tower, which echo each other. (In fact, there is also a urn city that has disappeared, but you can see the superimposed effect of these three towers in the exhibition hall inside the tower)

In the past, the Zhengyang Gate Tower was where the garrison soldiers climbed up to look out and command battles, and it was also the largest of all the city gates. So in fact, Qianmen = Zhengyangmen, but Zhengyangmen was a more formal and official name in the past, because it was right in front of the Forbidden City and the Imperial City, so it was called Qianmen.

The Zhengyangmen Tower can be climbed, and at the top is an exhibition hall, where there is a display board of "Emperor Qianlong's Southern Tour. Starting from the Capital", which allows one to learn about the social structure during the Qianlong period. The original picture is collected in the National Museum.

Zhengyang Gate was the main gate of the imperial capital when Beijing was built in the Ming Dynasty. It was the south gate of the inner city after Jiajing and in the Qing Dynasty, and was commonly known as the "front gate". There is a bridge across the moat outside the gate, named Zhengyang Bridge. There is a memorial archway to the south of the bridge, with the inscription "Zhengyang Bridge". Because it is five bays wide, it is commonly known as the "Five Archways". They are an important part of the national gate etiquette group and an important landscape landmark on the central axis, but they disappeared after 1955. In the restoration project of the historical features of Qianmen Street in 2006, the reconstruction of the Five Archways and Zhengyang Bridge was one of the key projects.

The real Qianmen, or the Great Qianmen, is here. But now it seems that Qianmen Street is more famous. It used to be a city wall, but now it is divided into two towers. You can go up to see the history of Zhengyangmen.

If you have watched the TV series "Under the Gate of Zhengyang", you can feel the emotional color of this place. Next to it is Qianmen Commercial Street. The surrounding hutongs are still worth visiting. As time goes by, a gathering area of hutongs has been formed. Qianmen Dashilan is home to hundreds of shops and theaters such as silk and cloth shops, pharmacies, shoe stores, and restaurants. Langfang Toutiao and Langfang Ertiao were once jewelry and jade markets; Zhubaoshi Street was home to 29 official furnaces that melted silver ingots; many Qianshili silver shops were opened in Qianshi Hutong, Shijia Hutong, and Xiyanhe; and Wang Guangfu Xiejie, Shaanxi Lane and other eight hutongs were where brothels were concentrated, commonly known as the "Eight Great Hutongs"~~~~~~

Zhengyangmen is the so-called front gate, a more commercial place - Qianmen Street. It was formerly called the Barbican. The transportation to it is also relatively convenient. There is a subway line 2, and it does not take long to walk out of the station. Although there are many people on Qianmen Street, the place is relatively large, so it is not very crowded. It is one of the few remaining city towers and arrow towers in Beijing. The arrow tower can be seen from Qianmen Street, and it feels very handsome. The Zhengyangmen Gate is also free to visit.

Whenever I walk under the Zhengyang Gate Tower, I look up at its majesty and imagine its mystery. Defending against enemy invasion is the main function of the city gate, and Zhengyang Gate, the first of the gates in Kyoto, is no exception. The defense function of Zhengyang Gate is achieved by the moat, suspension bridge, gate, city gate, urn, city wall, soldiers and combat weapons. Zhengyang Gate has a history of nearly 600 years since its construction. In the long historical process, it has gone through many vicissitudes and still stands in Kyoto. It has not only witnessed the rise and fall of the feudal dynasties of Ming and Qing, the honor and disgrace of emperors and generals, but also experienced many major events that affected the development of Chinese history, and witnessed the earth-shaking changes and rapid development of New China after the reform and opening up.

There is a big brass sign at Zhengyangmen, which indicates that this is the "0" kilometer. The country's well-connected mileage starts from here. The questions I have always wanted to know are answered here. Standing on the Zhengyangmen tower and looking around, the prosperous scene of the Qianmen area today forms a strong contrast and comparison with the historical records. An ancient, historical Zhengyangmen and a modern urban landscape are presented to people. Under the feet is the starting point of the "0" kilometer of the motherland, which extends from here to all directions. It is really emotional and can't help but make people think of it.

Zhengyangmen was first built in the 17th year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty. It was originally named Lizhengmen. Because it is located right in front of the Forbidden City, it is also known as the "front gate". Zhengyangmen is one of the "Nine Gates of the Capital" in old Beijing. It integrates the Zhengyangmen Tower, Zhengyangmen Arrow Tower and Zhengyangmen Barbican into one, and is a complete ancient defensive building system. According to local chronicles: the tower and arrow tower at that time were magnificent in scale and tall in shape; the Barbican was majestic and was a representative work of the old Beijing city wall architecture. Over the past 500 years, Zhengyangmen has experienced many vicissitudes and has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. Now only the tower and arrow tower remain. It is the only relatively intact city gate in Beijing. There is a Beijing Folk Customs and Folk Exhibition Hall on the tower.

The Zhengyangmen Arrow Tower was first built in the fourth year of the Zhengtong reign of the Ming Dynasty (1439). It is a brick fortress-style building with a 12-meter-high city platform. The gate is a five-vaulted five-vaulted arch-style gate located in the middle of the city platform. It is the only gate in the inner city with an arrow tower and is used for dragon and phoenix chariots. The arrow tower has a double-eaved hip roof and gray-tile green glazed edges. There are four floors in total. The arrow tower has four layers of arrow holes, 13 holes on each floor, four layers of arrow holes on the east and west sides, and five holes on each side of the east and west sides of the porch, a total of 94 holes, for external archery. The arrow tower is seven rooms wide and 62 meters wide. There are five rooms in the north porch, 42 meters wide, and a building height of 24 meters. There are two doors, a hanging gate (i.e., a jack gate) in the front, and a double iron leaf gate in the back.

There is a plate with longitude and latitude written on the ground inside Zhengyang Gate. This is the center of Beijing! There is a round plate at the gate below Zhengyang Gate showing that this is the zero kilometer point of China Highway. Originally, there were two towers forming a circle, and there were also Guandi Temple and Guanyin Temple, which were said to be very effective. Now they have been demolished and moved... It is still very necessary to go out for sightseeing, listen to the tour guide's explanation, see the photo exhibition, and understand its past and present. Otherwise, if you just look at the appearance and don't know what it is, it will definitely be a wasted trip!!!

Zhengyangmen, commonly known as Qianmen, is located in the middle of the southern wall of the inner city. It is the main gate of Beijing's inner city. In the Yuan Dynasty, it was called "Lizhengmen" because it was the gate of the capital. Because Zhengyangmen is located on the central axis and is the "national gate", its regulations are taller than the other eight gates in the inner city.

Zhengyangmen is the south gate of the capital of the Ming and Qing dynasties in China, commonly known as Qianmen. It is an important carrier of the history and culture of old Beijing and a visual embodiment of the military defense of ancient feudal society. What can be seen now are the two main buildings of the Arrow Tower and the City Tower. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the gate of the Arrow Tower could only be opened when the emperor went on tour or offered sacrifices. I watched a TV series "Zhengyangmen" two years ago and was very impressed. This time I had the opportunity to come to Beijing and specially went to see it. Now this gatehouse has been renovated and has lost a bit of its quaint flavor, plus the Qianmen commercial district opposite, which makes it less interesting. However, climbing up the city tower, browsing the traces of history on the first and second floors, and going to the top floor to see the surrounding scenery, sitting on the stone bench and occasionally feeling a breeze, it feels great. This location is very easy to find. It is on the south side of the Forbidden City on the central axis. If you go straight here, you can get there by exiting Qianmen Station on Metro Line 2.
