It is the oldest ancient bridge in Lanzhou's history and the first real bridge on the 5,464-kilometer Yellow River, so it is known as "the first bridge on the Yellow River in the world". Construction began in the 33rd year of Emperor Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1907 AD). It was initially named "Lanzhou Yellow River Iron Bridge". After its completion, two large stone archways were built, one engraved with "Benefits from Three Borders" and the other with "Peace of Mind from Nine Bends", with couplets on each:

I have seen thousands of waves in the sea and now I am crossing the first bridge over the Yellow River.

The natural dangers are transformed into a smooth road, and straight into the maritime building, where the law cannot be seen;

How can I get such a view from the cloud ladder to the sky when the river bank is opened?

In 1942, it was renamed "Zhongshan Bridge". In 1954, the iron bridge was reinforced and five curved arch beams were added.

Lanzhou was once an important city on the ancient Silk Road. Although it is not as dazzling as it used to be when all the major cities are developing rapidly today, its heritage remains.

The Yellow River runs through the city, and the aroma of beef noodles fills the air. I originally planned to rest in Lanzhou for a night, but time was limited, so I only stayed for two hours before rushing to Xining. Anyway, it was enough to stand on the Zhongshan Bridge and feel the beauty of the Yellow River and taste the aroma of beef noodles by the Yellow River.

Zhongshan Bridge is also known as the First Bridge over the Yellow River. No tickets are required. The entire bridge is not open to traffic, but you can walk across the Yellow River on the bridge.

An iron bridge across the Yellow River in Chengguan District, Lanzhou City, was built in the 33rd year of Emperor Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1907). All materials were shipped from Germany to Tianjin by sea, and then transferred from Tianjin to Lanzhou by the Gansu Foreign Affairs Bureau. It took three years to build and cost more than 360,000 taels of silver. It is known as the "No. 1 Bridge over the Yellow River in the World". The bridge is 234 meters long and 7.5 meters wide. It was originally named "Lanzhou Yellow River Iron Bridge". In 1928, it was renamed Zhongshan Bridge in memory of Mr. Sun Yat-sen and is still in use today. We went there on September 14th. Standing on the bridge, we saw the Yellow River flowing quickly and flooding the roads along the river.

The First Bridge over the Yellow River, built in the 33rd year of Emperor Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1907), has been a bridge for more than a century and has witnessed the vicissitudes of history and the rise and fall of honors! Now it is a pedestrian bridge and a famous attraction in Lanzhou. There are many tourists. At night, the bridge is decorated with colorful lights, which is also beautiful!

Above the Zhongshan Bridge is the Baita Mountain Park. It is said that the view of the Yellow River from the mountain is also very beautiful. We cannot go up the mountain at night, but the buildings on the Baita Mountain are all illuminated at night, and it looks a bit like Hongyadong when viewed from the opposite bank!

The steel structure bridge connects the north and south banks of Lanzhou City and has a long history. Climbing the bridge and looking far away, the Yellow River is like a belt not far away, with surging waves, sheepskin rafts, speedboats 🛥 and cable cars are all there. The most intuitive feeling: yellow! It can be said that one scoop of the Yellow River and half a scoop of mud. After we finished a circle, we just caught up with the lighting of the entire bridge. We squatted in various colors and it looked very retro like "Little Hong Kong". With the Baitashan Park behind it, the night view is super beautiful!

There is also a statue of the Yellow River Mother not far away. There are many tourists in Lanzhou. This feeling of huge crowds of people cannot be found in Hohhot. Lanzhou Yellow River Iron Bridge, also known as Zhongshan Bridge, is located at the foot of Baita Mountain. It was designed by an American bridge company, built by German Tailai Foreign Company, and constructed by Chinese craftsmen. In the 34th year of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1908), the Lanzhou Yellow River Iron Bridge project was officially started and completed and opened to traffic one year later. In the 17th year of the Republic of China (1928), it was called Zhongshan Bridge in memory of Mr. Sun Yat-sen. Lanzhou Yellow River Iron Bridge is the first bridge in the entire northwest region of China in modern history to be built with foreign technology. The bridge is 233.5 meters long and 8.36 meters wide. It has four piers and five spans, with a span of 45.9 meters for each span. The upper structure is a trapezoidal through-type steel truss, and each span is a truss system composed of an over-static structure, divided into five rectangles by a vertical steel frame.

Zhongshan Bridge was originally named Lanzhou Yellow River Iron Bridge. It is 234 meters long and 7.5 meters wide. It is a steel truss + curved steel frame structure bridge with six piers and five spans. On the front, the five characters "The First Bridge of the Yellow River" were written by Li Quan, a famous calligrapher in Gansu Province. The characters are slanted and square, vigorous and solemn, showing the style of a master. In 1928, in order to commemorate Mr. Sun Yat-sen, the plaque "Zhongshan Bridge" was handwritten by Liu Yufen, the then chairman of Gansu Province, and hung on the plaque on the south side of the iron bridge. Since then, the "First Bridge" was renamed Zhongshan Bridge and has been used to this day.

A must-visit place in Lanzhou, located in the downtown area, spanning the two banks of the Yellow River. It was jointly built by Americans and Germans in 1909, and the Qing government sent laborers to do coolies. It was originally called the Yellow River Iron Bridge. During the Republic of China period, there was a craze to commemorate Sun Yat-sen, and it was renamed Zhongshan Bridge. Later, the fame of this bridge was further highlighted, and a monument was erected, calling it the "First Bridge of the Yellow River".

Most cultural relics and scenic spots always want to push their history back a little to enhance their cultural status. The introduction stone tablet next to it emphasizes that "the predecessor began in the fifth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1372 AD), and was historically known as Zhenyuan Bridge", which suddenly raises the history of the bridge to six or seven hundred years. Please note that the key word here is "predecessor".

If you come to Lanzhou and want to relax, this bridge is worth recommending.

It is a free and open scenic spot, and it is best to go there at night. The bridge will no longer be illuminated at 10 o'clock, so you must grasp the time. The brightly lit iron bridge, the light decoration of Baita Mountain Park on the north bank of the Yellow River, and the lights of the tall buildings in Lanzhou city complement each other, which is quite beautiful.

Zhongshan Bridge, the first bridge across the Yellow River in the world, is no longer open to traffic and is only open to pedestrians for viewing and passing, but its commemorative value has long surpassed its transportation significance.

"Looking up, I see the White Pagoda, and walking slowly across the Yellow River. Two mountains stand on the opposite bank, and I feel very excited in the middle of the river," Zhao Puchu wrote.

People come to visit her and admire her in an endless stream. She is the best witness of Lanzhou's historical changes from ancient times to the present.

Come here in the afternoon near sunset and wait for the sunset. The golden light of the setting sun shines on the Yellow River. From time to time, large ships pass by, which is shocking and magnificent.

When night falls, the lights on Zhongshan Bridge are on. Standing in the distance, the willows sway swaying in the wind, and the bridge changes colors. It is gorgeous yet tender.

Zhongshan Bridge, as the first bridge across the Yellow River, was designed by a German engineer in 1904. Coincidentally, I grew up at the mouth of the Yellow River, where the first steel-framed bridge in the lower reaches of the Yellow River was built in 1984. Thousands of kilometers of heritage, decades of history, a bridge across the Yellow River, indeed recorded the honor, disgrace and revival of a nation for nearly a century.

The night view of Zhongshan Bridge is more beautiful and dazzling than that seen during the day. When night falls and the lights come on, it feels like a mixture of Shanghai Bund and Chongqing Hongyadong. It is really magical.

In his poem “A Journey on the Yellow River”, Gong Taifu of the Yuan Dynasty said, “The Yellow River is vast, boundless and bottomless, and its length is unknown for thousands of miles.”

In the Tang Dynasty, Liu Yuxi wrote in Lang Tao Sha that "the Yellow River bends and stretches for thousands of miles, and the waves are washed and blown by the wind from the ends of the earth."

When standing by the Yellow River, I felt that these two lines of poetry fully described the majestic and powerful waves of the Yellow River.

Unfortunately, Lanzhou has been experiencing heavy rain for a long time, and the water level of the Yellow River has risen and submerged the riverside viewing platform, so you can only stand on the bridge to enjoy the scenery.

Pass by and take a look

Before going to Zhongshan Bridge, you should search its history on Baidu, otherwise you may think it is just an iron bridge across the Yellow River. When I went there, the sun was setting. Standing on the bridge and looking at the rolling Yellow River water under the bridge and the setting sun in the distance, I couldn't help but feel a sense of the great river flowing eastward.

You stand on the bridge and look at the scenery, and I look at you from under the bridge. It is a bit like the bridge along the Huangpu River in Shanghai.

It is suitable to go at night. It feels like Afghanistan during the day.
