Sacred Heart Cathedral

The most magnificent and distinctive cathedral in the Catholic Diocese of Guangzhou, one of the most magnificent twin-spired Gothic buildings in existence in China, and the largest stone-structured Catholic building in Southeast Asia.
Designed by French designers and built by Chinese craftsmen, it is one of the four all-stone Gothic church buildings in the world, comparable to the world-famous Notre Dame de Paris in France.
There are 10 giant stone pillars on each side of the church. The steeply rising pointed arch design gives the whole church a sense of rising. The roof is high in the middle and low on both sides, showing an undulating trend, rendering a solemn religious atmosphere.
The stained glass windows on the front door and surrounding walls depict biblical stories.

After the burning of Notre Dame de Paris, friends who were in Guangzhou all checked in at Guangzhou Stone Chamber Sacred Heart Church because both church buildings are Gothic buildings, comparable to Notre Dame de Paris. It is recommended to get up early to check in when visiting the Sacred Heart Cathedral. On the first morning, you can take a visit photo in the Sacred Heart Church Square without taking photos with many tourists. On the second morning, the church will open for visit at 8:30 in the morning, and you can also visit and take photos inside the church (but there are no activities and the lights are not on in the church. Tripods are not allowed to be used for taking photos, so you have to increase the ISO or take photos with your mobile phone). At about 10 o'clock, the lights will be turned on in the church and there will be volunteers to introduce the attractions or there will be church activities in the church. Taking photos in the church at this time is prohibited, and there will be volunteers to supervise the implementation. If you are interested in church activities, you can watch them. If you are not interested, you can walk around the periphery of the church. To get to the Sacred Heart Cathedral, if you take the subway to Exit B of Yide Road, you can cross Zhima Street to the middle of the Sacred Heart Church if you are interested. You can cross some small streets and alleys to experience the different lives of residents in Guangzhou, which is famous for its high-rise buildings.

Guangzhou Stone Chamber Sacred Heart Cathedral is located on Yide Road, which is very conveniently located. It is surrounded by dry goods streets and is relatively noisy. It is one of the four all-stone Gothic cathedrals in the world. It is very representative and of historical significance. It is very well protected from the outside. It is magnificent and distinctive. If you come to Guangzhou for tourism, it is definitely worth a visit and taking pictures!

The church is very large, and it looks even more magnificent up close. However, when we went there, it was almost 5pm, and the security guards were ready to kick people out... So we rushed in and took a look around, which was a bit rushed.

On the back of the church, the sunlight is not so strong, and the symmetrical architectural structure looks super beautiful in the photo.

The afterglow of the setting sun cast a layer of golden light on the bell tower on the top of the cathedral, as if there were really gods whispering at the top of the tower, it felt very sacred and pure.

The Sacred Heart Cathedral on Yide Road, when you come here to experience the "European style", you also have to accept the chaos of the seafood market. In the church bells, the smell of scallops, dried oysters, dried squid and other seafood hits your nose, as if you can light a fire and eat Cantonese seafood hot pot. Among the seafood on Yide Road, two tall Gothic spires are surrounded by arcades. This is the famous stone chamber Sacred Heart Cathedral. The church is open to ordinary tourists. Walking into the church, the umbrella-shaped dome is in the sky, and the gorgeous glass chandelier hangs below it, and a solemn atmosphere follows. Exquisite stained glass windows.

The Stone Chamber Sacred Heart Cathedral is located on Yide Road in the center of Guangzhou. The cathedral was built in 1863 and completed in 1888. It took 25 years to complete and has a history of more than 130 years. The Stone Chamber Sacred Heart Cathedral is a typical Gothic church, especially the twin bell towers are unique.

Transportation tips:

1. Take bus No. 4, 8, 61, 82, 238 or 823 and get off at Yide Road Station.

2. Take Metro Line 2 to Haizhu Square Station, take Exit B1 and walk about 550 meters to the destination.

The church opens at 14:00 in the afternoon and we waited outside for a while.

What I like more is the stained glass of the church. It is not very obvious from the outside, but it is really beautiful when you enter the church.

When we arrived at the church, the sky was gloomy and windy, but after we entered the church and sat down, the sky began to clear up and the sunlight shone through the stained glass, which was colorful and particularly beautiful.

If you are interested, you can also listen to the Catholic mass. We didn’t stay long because we are not religious.

By Xiaodie |

After we entered the wall, I started taking pictures. The building was really beautiful. When I was about to enter the church, they started praying and tourists were not allowed to enter. I regretted it. I knew this and went to the interior first. However, I have visited many churches in other cities before, so I didn’t regret it. I just wandered around the periphery. Basically, the basic configuration of each church is similar.

By MollyLee |

The day before New Year's Day, there were not many tourists, probably because of the gloomy weather. I was a little disappointed with this church. It was not big and the architecture was not particularly beautiful. Maybe I should learn more about the history of the church to understand its significance to Guangzhou.

On Sunday, there were many locals who came to worship, especially the elderly. Since we are not believers and have no faith in our hearts (so sad...), we could only experience the Cantonese mass superficially. We probably treated it as a Cantonese listening session, haha. We sat there for about half an hour and then left early. When the hymns sounded for the first time, I felt a little bit of piety, haha.

Visiting around the perimeter of the church, the intricate lines, complex floral decorations, carvings and stacking are all well-coordinated, highlighting the solemnity and simplicity of the church. Putting aside the religious and historical background, it is nice to simply appreciate it.

History is always heavy. The Sacred Heart Cathedral, which has a history of more than 130 years, still looks majestic and solemn. Of course, I don't know much about the architecture of the church, but the beauty brought by the exquisiteness and grandeur of the building is irresistible. Those colorful stained glass windows that remain in my memory are finally seen up close, and even the voice of the priest is so beautiful to me. Even the most restless mind, I think, can calm down at this moment.

Recommendation index: 3 stars

Tickets: No

Way to go: Driving or subway

Visiting time: half an hour

The reason why it only has 3.5 stars is that this place is a bit roundabout compared to other attractions, and it only takes half an hour to visit, which is a bit uneconomical. But as one of the most magnificent twin-spired Gothic buildings in China, it is still worth a visit.

By Yu |

There were many people taking photos inside, but since it was a place for worship, it was not appropriate to hold the camera and press the shutter all the time. There were many people, many of whom listened attentively. Neither of us were believers, and we could not hear clearly what he was saying, so we left after listening for a while~~ There were also a lot of people outside, and it seemed that they had walked around the church from front to back, inside and outside.

By Martian User |

Now I can't see any trace of sadness, because it is really beautiful.

Even if you are not religious, you will be infected by the atmosphere if you sit there quietly.

Take a Bible, read a story about Jesus, sing a hymn, kneel on the footboard and let your mind go blank; when your mind wanders, you can stare at the dome of the sky or feel moved by the colorful glazed windows.

After the mass is over, wander around this Gothic building, feel the beauty of its design, and leave with satisfaction...Hallelujah.

By Sunny Doll |

I came here because of its reputation. I heard it is a holy place for taking photos. It is much smaller than I imagined, and the transportation is not convenient (Guangzhou is really congested all year round). I parked a long way away. I suggest that you take the subway. When the church came into view, it was quite magnificent. The patterns on the walls, the stained glass in the church, and the explanations in the church. Babies who are interested in religious culture can come and listen...

By Zhang Xiaochengzi |

This is the first time I have seen the interior of a European church. It is magnificent and solemn. I was in the atmosphere of the mass, feeling the sacredness and marveling at the architecture of the church. It is really beautiful. (I am very sorry that I can only use such a pale word as "beautiful")

I hadn’t clicked on the details in the app before, so I didn’t notice the time of each mass (sigh…silly me).

I arrived at 9 am on Sunday, just in time to catch the Cantonese mass. I was confused as I couldn't understand anything the whole time, but even so, I still felt it from everyone's pious expressions and the solemn atmosphere - many of them were devout believers, with white hair, grandpa and grandma. Although they were dressed simply, their faces were filled with smiles. This is probably the so-called richness of the soul.

I seemed very out of place among them. I always felt that if I stood or kneeled among them without piety, it would be a blasphemy to the whole ceremony. This weird sense of self-awareness has existed since I entered the church, and eventually made me leave rudely before the ceremony was over.

The cell phone really can't capture one tenth of her beauty. The colored glaze on the glass is really beautiful.

It is also one of the four all-stone Gothic church buildings in the world (the other three are Notre Dame de Paris, Westminster Abbey, and Cologne Cathedral). The total area of the Stone Chamber Sacred Heart Cathedral is 2,754 square meters, 35 meters wide from east to west, 78.69 meters long from north to south, and 58.5 meters high from the ground to the spire. The Stone Chamber Sacred Heart Cathedral was built in 1861 at a cost of 400,000 francs, comparable to the world-famous Notre Dame de Paris in France. It was designed by French designers and built by Chinese craftsmen. It is a national key cultural relic protection unit.

It is accessible via Yide Road Station on Metro Line 6. It is closed on Mondays. No reservation is required for visiting and the admission fee is free.

When you walk through the noisy toy street in Guangzhou and suddenly find a Gothic church in front of you in a small square on the side of the road, you will be surprised. This is the famous Sacred Heart Cathedral. Spreading the gospel in the downtown must have been the purpose of the missionaries back then. Even if you can't go inside to see this exquisite building, you can still feel a sense of comfort by looking at its front.

By Mangosteen Coconut Jelly |

I took the subway line 6 to go there. It was Christmas that day, so the interior of the church was not open to the public. I don’t know if you can buy a ticket to enter during normal times. Everyone was taking pictures outside.

The Stone Chamber Sacred Heart Cathedral is not far from Shamian Island. It is the most magnificent and distinctive cathedral in the Catholic Diocese of Guangzhou. It is one of the most magnificent twin-spired Gothic buildings in China and the largest stone structure Catholic building in Southeast Asia. Its architectural appearance is similar to that of the Hongjialou Church in Jinan, but it is not as grand as the one in Jinan.

By Island Hill No. 17 |

The Stone Chamber Sacred Heart Cathedral is not only the largest Catholic church in the Guangzhou Diocese, but also the most magnificent double-spired Gothic building in China. It has a total area of 2,754 square meters and is 58.5 meters high from the ground to the spire. Since all the walls and pillars are made of granite, it is named "Stone Chamber". Although the church was designed by a French designer, the actual construction work was directed by Cai Xiao, a Hakka stonemason from Jiantian Village, Guangdong. Therefore, many Chinese elements were incorporated into it. For example, the water outlet on the roof of the church is in the shape of a Chinese lion, the floor uses Guangdong large-step bricks with better moisture resistance, and the gate is engraved with Cantonese wood carvings, etc., forming a very unique architectural style~

By Devinlf |

Very disappointed! It is considered good in China, but it is several levels behind Notre Dame de Paris! I really don't know why it is comparable to Notre Dame de Paris! The repair is very rough, and the details are of very poor quality. You can only view it from a distance and not up close. It seems that the churches in Hanoi, Vietnam are better than this one.

In a word, it is simply tarnishing the reputation of Notre Dame de Paris.

Seeing that I still had some time in the afternoon, I wanted to go to the Stone Chamber Sacred Heart Cathedral for a walk. The subway was not far away, only 2 stops away. There were also many tourists there, and it was Saturday and the church was in service so tourists were not allowed to visit. In the end, I took a few photos outside and left in a hurry! If you can reserve more time here, there are also delicious foods to choose from around!

This church is built entirely of stone and has a long history. It is also a classic Gothic architectural art. It is the largest church in Guangzhou. Although I am not a religious person, it is still worth visiting.

At first I thought it was just a church, nothing amazing, but after I took the photo, I found it was the highlight of this trip. By I want to change my life |

Personally, I think it is a very thoughtful church among many churches in China. When you enter, you will unconsciously feel a very solemn and dignified sense of ceremony. I want to get married there. Hahaha. When you enter, you will be given a small skirt. Don't be afraid to wear shorts or skirts. It is best to go early in the morning. The sun is so beautiful, it feels like being baptized when it hits your face. There are not many people at that time. Sitting inside and listening to the bells outside for a while, your mind will be very peaceful.

By Zhang Ashui |

The religious atmosphere is not strong today, but there are girls everywhere who want to capture their graceful figure, some with heavy makeup, some with Han makeup... We should really thank God!

It was a pity that I couldn’t enter the hall and see the stained glass windows in the backlight.

By Xiao Ningzi went out for a walk |

Next to it is a noisy seafood market. The road is very dirty when it rains. It doesn’t seem so bad from outside the church, but once you go in, the low sound of singing suddenly isolates you from the noisy world outside. It seems like another world inside, solemn and dignified. I like the stained glass in the church the most. These beautiful glasses always move me deeply.

I was arranged to visit too many cathedrals when I went to Europe, so when I saw the recommendation to visit the Stone Chamber Sacred Heart Cathedral, I couldn't help but feel that I had seen a lot of things. However, I was still shocked when I came here. The magnificence of the Stone Chamber Sacred Heart Cathedral is not inferior to Notre Dame de Paris, especially when it is surrounded by oriental buildings. The spectacular Gothic cathedral can give people a bright feeling. After all, it took more than 30 years to build it. The cathedral reflects the deep spirit of craftsmanship everywhere. Now the church also holds multiple masses every day, divided into Mandarin and Cantonese sessions, and there are English sessions on Sundays, which attracts a large number of devout Christians. There are some old Bibles that have been flipped through on many tables. The atmosphere can be said to be very strong.
