This is the location of the Hebei Buddhist Association, but it doesn't look like the pure land of Buddhism that I imagined. The temple is full of tour guides, taking pilgrims to various halls for worship, but monks are rarely seen. I met a monk and chatted with him for a while. He said that their abbot graduated from Peking University. What's the point of talking about graduating from a certain place when you have escaped from the mundane world and are no longer in the invisible?

The temple is full of vendors soliciting tourists to buy incense. Although there are notices in the temple saying not to buy incense privately, the temple obviously does nothing about the vendors. The temple also does nothing about the beggars inside and outside the temple. If they are real beggars, will the monks be merciful? If they are professional beggars, will the monks allow pilgrims to be deceived in the temple?

The Berlin Zen Temple is located in the southeast corner of Zhao County, Hebei Province (formerly known as Zhaozhou), and is across from the Zhaozhou Bridge, the world's first bridge. It was first built during the Jian'an period of Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty (196-220 AD). It was called Guanyin Temple in ancient times, Yong'an Temple in the Southern Song Dynasty, Berlin Zen Temple in the Jin Dynasty, and Berlin Zen Temple since the Yuan Dynasty. In the long river of history, although this ancient temple has experienced several ups and downs, it is still popular and has produced many eminent monks. According to the monk's biography, the famous Buddhist translator Xuanzang came here to study the "Chengshi Lun" with Master Daoshen before he went west to India to seek Buddhist scriptures. In the late Tang Dynasty, the Zen master Congshen (shěn) lived here for 40 years, spreading the Dharma and forming the far-reaching "Zhaozhou School Style". Therefore, the Berlin Zen Temple became an important ancestral temple in the history of Chinese Zen.

It was first built during the Jian'an period of Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty and was called Guanyin Temple in the ancient times. It was called Yong'an Temple in the Southern Song Dynasty, Bolin Zen Temple in the Jin Dynasty, and Bolin Zen Temple since the Yuan Dynasty. Bolin Temple has many famous buildings. The ancient tower standing in front of the Pu Guangming Hall in the temple is the stupa of the Zen Master Congshen of the ancient Buddha Zhaozhou. Because it is in Bolin Zen Temple, it is commonly known as Bolin Temple Tower.

The upper floor of the Guanyin Hall is the Sutra Library, which houses rare Buddhist scriptures. The lower floor is the Guanyin Hall, in the middle of which is a statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva carved from a dead thousand-year-old cypress trunk from the Berlin Zen Temple and covered with gold.

The Wanfo Building is 37 meters high, with two floors, covering an area of 5,000 square meters. The first floor is a bodhi field, with five bronze Buddha statues in the center, each 4.8 meters high, representing the five Buddhas of the five directions. There are a total of 10,480 small bronze Buddha statues, and their production method is also arranged according to the doctrine of the five wisdoms, five directions and five Buddhas. Among them, there are 2,016 statues on both sides of the north wall of the first floor, which are the central Vairocana Buddha; 2,010 statues on the east wall of the second floor are the eastern Akshobhya Buddha; 2,010 statues on the south wall are the southern Ratnasambhava Buddha; 2,010 statues on the west wall are the western Amitabha Buddha; and 2,010 statues on the north wall are the northern Amoghasiddhi Buddha. In 2009, 900 statues of the four great Bodhisattvas, Manjusri, Samantabhadra, Guanyin and Ksitigarbha, were enshrined on the east and west sides of the first floor, totaling 3,600 statues. The decorations on the top of the Berlin Zen Temple building are very beautiful.

Located in Zhaoxian County, Shijiazhuang, the temple is very grand and attracts many tourists.

It is a large temple. When driving, you must hear the traffic sign "Berlin Zen Temple Free Parking". Except for the police, other villagers who direct the parking are charged. The location is very far away and it is not convenient to enter the official parking space.

It's not very convenient to get there without a car, and it's even dirtier and messier than Zhengding County. Berlin Zen Temple doesn't charge admission, so there are so many people that I don't want to go in. In addition, I found that there is no delicious food nearby.

There is a temple because there is a pagoda. The temple was rebuilt in the 1980s and the pagoda is a treasure.

Zhao County is not only home to the Zhaozhou Bridge, but also to the Berlin Zen Temple, which was built during the Jian'an period of Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty. Master Xuanzang came here to study Buddhism before his journey to the west. The Zen master Congshen came to Zhaozhou on foot at the age of 80 and preached Buddhism in the Berlin Zen Temple for 40 years. He was known as the "Ancient Buddha of Zhaozhou".



Due to repeated disasters, only the stupa and more than 20 ancient cypresses from the Tang Dynasty were left in the last century to prove the existence of Berlin Zen Temple. It is believed that Berlin Zen Temple got its name from the lush and green ancient cypresses in the temple. Under the restoration led by Master Jinghui, Berlin Zen Temple was able to restore its former glory. The current abbot of Berlin Zen Temple is Minghai, the president of Hebei Buddhist Association. Berlin Zen Temple is also the location of Hebei Buddhist College, and it can be called the Buddhist center of Yanzhao.

To be honest, I was quite disappointed when I came here. The buildings were all newly built in modern times. They look magnificent, but there is no regulation at all. The roof of the whole temple is made of bright yellow glazed tiles. If you don't know, you will think you have entered the palace.

This is a very popular temple, free to enter, and there were a lot of people when I went there. It is said that making wishes is very effective, and there are enlightened monks.

The Berlin Temple Pagoda, also known as the Zen Master Congshen Relic Pagoda, is 33 meters high and has seven floors. It was built in the third year of Tianli in the Yuan Dynasty to commemorate the famous Tang Dynasty monk Zen Master Congshen Zhenji. It has a history of more than 670 years.

Zen Master Zhaozhou Congshen was a remarkable master in the history of Chinese Zen Buddhism, known as the "Ancient Buddha of Zhaozhou". He taught in this temple for forty years. His famous cases such as "The Cypress Tree in the Courtyard", "Go and Have Tea" and "A Dog Has No Buddha Nature" are still circulating among Zen monks in China, Japan, Europe and the United States, and are known as the "Zhaozhou Style" or "Zhaozhou Zen".

The only attraction is the tall Ten Thousand Buddhas Building at the back, which is a product of contemporary reconstruction and a testimony to the revival of Berlin Zen Temple. In general, there is no need to go to Berlin Zen Temple specifically.

An important center of Zen Buddhism in the north, Master Congshen came here in the late Tang Dynasty and started the "Zhaozhou Family Style". "Learn Buddhism with a Normal Mind", "Dogs Have No Buddha Nature" and "Go and Have Tea" are all Zhaozhou cases.

Finally, you cannot play with your mobile phone or cross your legs. Your feet must be placed on the ground. Of course, it is best to wash the dishes yourself after the meal. Do not waste food!!!

The Bailin Zen Temple is very popular, and the architecture and religious paintings inside the temple are worth appreciating. You should burn incense early on the first and fifteenth day of the lunar month.

It is crowded with believers or people praying to Buddha. It is best to find a non-holiday, when it is very quiet. The ancient trees and houses inside have a unique Zen feeling. This place is not far from Zhaozhou Bridge, but the cultural display of Zhaozhou Bridge is not as strong as here. And if you catch up with the Qingming Festival and the half month after, there is a pear garden of 10,000 mu 20 kilometers away. The pear blossoms are in full bloom like a vast ocean, and you can't see the end at a glance. When you are surrounded by the fragrance of flowers, the white flowers, and the tranquility, you can see its Zen feeling.

After Master Zhaozhou Congshen attained enlightenment from Master Nanquan, he traveled with a staff, "trampling the clouds on the top of the mountain with straw sandals", and settled in Guanyin Temple in Zhaozhou, Hebei Province in his later years. One day, a Zen monk came to study with Master Zhaozhou. Zhaozhou asked him, "Have you been here before?" The monk said, "Yes." Zhaozhou said, "Have some tea." After the monk left, Zhaozhou asked another Zen monk, "Have you been here before?" The new monk said, "No." Zhaozhou also said, "Have some tea." The abbot was puzzled when he heard this, and asked Zhaozhou, "Why do those who have been here before have some tea, and those who have not been here also have some tea?" Zhaozhou immediately called the abbot, and the abbot agreed. Zhaozhou said, "Have some tea!" This is the origin of the case of Master Zhaozhou's "Have some tea".

The environment of Berlin Zen Temple is very elegant, with cypress trees being the most common!

Berlin Zen Temple is the only large Buddhist holy site that does not charge admission. It does not have a strong commercial atmosphere. It only has a distribution center for Buddhist scriptures, and all Buddhist objects have been consecrated.

Zhaozhou Berlin Zen Temple is about 50 kilometers away from Shijiazhuang, less than an hour away. Every year on the morning of the first day of the Chinese New Year, our whole family goes to Berlin Zen Temple to burn incense. We don’t ask for anything, it’s like going home...

On the morning of the first day of the Lunar New Year, when we lit the first incense of the New Year in Berlin Zen Temple, amid the sound of Buddhist chanting, all the blessings, all the thoughts, are no longer the prayers of one person. At this moment of the New Year, the first thought in the heart is pure and exudes fragrance; bowing to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is the first good thought that arises in the New Year, and the first good wish sent to the world.

Pu Guang prays for the auspicious light of all Buddhas and the praise of dragons and gods; it gathers the condensed fragrance of sandalwood and the elegance of Mantuo, so that one may have infinite wisdom, freedom of body and mind, and good health and happiness and longevity!

This is a very famous temple in the local area. You need to go to Nanjiao Bus Station to take a bus. There is a special bus that goes directly to Berlin Zen Temple. You can buy the ticket directly. The fee is 12 yuan. There are also places to get off along the way. It takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to get there. If you go directly to the bus station, you need to go back about 1,000 meters. You can also take the bus at this bus station. The door will be open and you can get on if there is a seat. The last bus is at 5:30. It is quite convenient to go back and forth.

It takes about half a day to go around the temple. You can pray for blessings and worship Buddha. There is no entrance fee here, but you are not allowed to eat after entering. You must eat outside before entering. Lay Buddhists can stay here for 30 yuan per day. You can cultivate yourself in peace! There are vegetarian dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but you cannot talk while eating, and you cannot waste food in your bowl. If you believe in Buddhism, you can go in and worship. If your wish comes true, you have to repay it!

Different from other temples with a strong commercial atmosphere, this Zen temple is worth careful appreciation both in terms of architecture and connotation.

We arrived at Berlin Zen Temple and entered the temple. Since it was not the peak tourist season, there were very few people.

As we came in a hurry and did not do enough homework beforehand, we arrived in Zhao County after many twists and turns. What we did not expect was that in this inconspicuous county town there would be such magnificent buildings, such sacred temples, and such quiet and pure land.

This is the magnificent hall below. Each of us can receive a copy of the sutra (textbook). The ages of the lay Buddhists vary greatly. I was patrolling the hall and the monks began to line up.



As we entered the hall with instruments in hand, the atmosphere was immediately different. When the scene that I had only heard and seen on TV appeared before my eyes, I felt an indescribable reverence.



I was surrounded by solemnity and shock. The evening class lasted about an hour and a half and had many procedures.



It was Qing's first time experiencing this, so naturally there were many things we were not used to, which now seems funny. For example, the lay Buddhists would chant along, because there were textbooks, but I often



If I lose my concentration, I will lose track of which page I am on, and I will run back and forth like an ignorant child, trying to find where I was at. However, Qing stood there calmly, with the book on the cushion.



I thought she was listening, but just as she bent down to pick up the book, we entered the kneeling phase, and then I saw her following us in a hurry, going back and forth like this.



It's quite interesting to think about it.

This was the first time I participated in such a grand French event. We all stayed inside the temple. We slept quietly on the floor. There were about 20 women crowded in the house. I was very tired from standing. I couldn't feel the silence well because of the ride, the fatigue, the activities, and the photography. We fell asleep with the silence to the sound of the clappers.

The gate of the Bolin Zen Temple faces south and is located on Shita Road, not Bolin Street. The parking lot in front of the temple is under renovation and is temporarily closed. Tourist vehicles can only park on the sidewalks in front of shops on both sides of the road. The shopkeepers will diligently lay the ramp for you, guide you onto the curb, and then charge you 10 yuan. If you bargain with them or question them, they will say that it is the peak tourist season and they have to make some money.

It has been a week since I returned from Berlin Monastery. I often wonder if there is a small world in the universe where people can live like in Berlin Monastery? Every day, life is very simple, with only five to seven things to do. I seldom talk and just sit quietly to concentrate on thinking about the meaning of life. All the volunteers are so dedicated and work passionately according to the rules. It is really a beautiful little world.

After having lunch outside the temple, we entered the temple. There are accommodations specially prepared for lay Buddhists in the temple. Although simple, they are very clean. There are 6 people in a room. There are toilets and water heaters in the room. We were received by the monk in charge of handling external affairs, whose Dharma name is Chuanxue. Master Chuanxue has pure eyes.

After explaining the precautions for activities in the temple, Master Chuanxue took us to visit the Ten Thousand Buddha Hall, which is the largest Buddhist hall in Berlin Temple. It is solemn and magnificent. It is the place where monks hold morning and evening classes and perform rituals. It is usually not open to tourists, and tourists can only take a look from the outside.

After a short rest, we practiced the kneeling taught by Master Chuan Xue in the Wanfo Hall. At nearly 4 o'clock, the monks filed in and the evening class began on time. In my opinion, the chanting of scriptures in the morning and evening classes is chanting, with a certain rhythm and beat, and the breath is long and distant. One or two monks lead the singing. At the beginning, the rhythm is a little slow, and we can recite along with the scriptures, but then the rhythm becomes faster and faster. Fortunately, we put our hands together, close our eyes and feel it with our hearts. This ritual chanting transmits a kind of energy, an energy that can calm the heart, an energy that is consistent with the frequency of the universe.

After dinner, I took a short break. At 7:30, the Zen master gave a lecture. It was still early, so I took a walk in the temple. It was completely dark, with almost no street lights and only a few corridor lights. I am a timid person, but I feel safe and comfortable here. There are pavilions and towers everywhere, as if I have traveled through time and space. What else can I do except enjoy the present? Turning a corner, I arrived at the Wanfo Hall again. The bright moon in the sky illuminated the square in front of the hall. The bright moon accompanied the ancient temple. This beautiful scenery cannot be described in words, and I will never forget it.

The so-called study and practice means eating and living in the temple, experiencing the temple life, participating in morning and evening classes, dining, sitting incense and other activities. The temple is dedicated to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions and three times, and there are monks and nuns. It is a solemn and pure place, so it is required not to wear shorts, sandals, slippers, and girls should not wear short skirts or overly revealing clothes. Zen should be silent rather than noisy, and laughter, joking, or any inappropriate and unlawful behavior should be restrained. We arrived in Zhao County at 11:30 noon. This was the time for dining in the temple. We were afraid of causing trouble with so many people, so we found a vegetarian restaurant outside the temple to fill our stomachs, and then entered the temple to report to the guest hall.

There is no entrance fee to Berlin Zen Temple. It welcomes saints from all over the world and allows people to come and go freely.
