Xilin Gol is Mongolian, meaning river in hilly areas. Xilin Gol League is located in the north of Beijing, the capital of China, and in the central part of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It borders Mongolia to the north, with a border line of 1,098 kilometers. It is adjacent to Chifeng City, Tongliao City, and Xing'an League of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to the east, Ulanqab League to the west, and Chengde and Zhangjiakou of Hebei Province to the south. It has a total area of 203,000 square kilometers and is the closest frontier ethnic minority area to Beijing. The league has jurisdiction over 9 banners, 2 cities, 1 county and 3 autonomous region-level green industry development zones. There are 24 ethnic groups in the league, including Mongolian, Han, Hui, Daur, Oroqen, etc., with a total population of 920,000.

Horseshoe Volcano Roadmap:

After exiting the Huiteng River toll station, there is a fork road X515 to the south, which can lead all the way to the north shore of Lake Darinor. The first section of this road is a hardened cement road, and the second section is a cinder road, but the road condition is good, there are no big potholes, and cars can pass. (The previous guide said it was a crater road, which should have been repaired)

Drive along X515 for about 30km, about an hour, turn left and you will see a small village. At this time, there will be a three-way intersection. To the right is a road that leads to Darinor Lake, and to the left is a hardened cement road. After walking on this cement road for a while, you can see a small yurt in the small village. This is the owner of the grassland where the Horseshoe Volcano is located. After bargaining, the deal was made for 100 yuan per car. The owner led the way directly into the grassland, and it took only 5-10 minutes to drive slowly to the Horseshoe Volcano.

Xilin Gol Grassland is located in the east-central part of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, with a grassland area of 179,600 square kilometers. 50% of the grass is high-quality forage. We drove away tactfully, and on the way we saw many cars heading to the Xilin Gol Grassland destination of the navigation, probably all of them were from Amap. In fact, the Xilin Gol Grassland is very large, and the road along the way is part of the Xilin Gol Grassland. The so-called scenic spot is nothing more than a small area with a piece of land, a few yurts, some horseback riding and archery rides, and catering, accommodation and entertainment. If you want to experience the morning and night starry sky of the grassland, you can live in such places. Otherwise, you can drive to see where is good, find a convenient place to park the car, and go sightseeing at any time. If you don't want to live on the grassland, you can live in nearby counties and towns. The conditions are better than yurts and cheaper.

It rained heavily all the way, but it was sunny when we arrived near the Xilinhot toll station. The big white clouds and the sudden blue sky were definitely not to be missed. The grassland scenery was visible.

We arrived at around six or seven o'clock, just in time for the sunset, which was stunningly beautiful.

It is suitable for self-driving, the people are simple and honest, and the travel cost is low.

Although it took a detour and added nearly 2 hours of driving time, we saved money and unexpectedly enjoyed the scenery of Xilin Gol Grassland. This was really a blessing in disguise.

2011.7 The whole family stayed overnight at Darinor Lake, and drove to Xilinhot via Huitengxile Grassland the next day. We passed the beautiful Xilin Gol Grassland, and the wind power generation on both sides of the highway was spectacular.

This map is a bit tricky, and there is also Gaode. If you search for "Xilinguole Grassland" on the map, you will find nothing, only a grassland farmhouse in the distance (but horseback riding is cheaper, 50 unlimited time). And if you search for "Xilinguole League Grassland", there is also such a place, but in fact the accurate name should be "Baiyinxile Zagstai Scenic Area", which is charged.

The most important season to visit the grassland is generally from mid-June to mid-August. At this time, both the north and the south are hotter, while the Inner Mongolia Plateau is relatively cooler due to its geographical location. However, the rain was not good in 2018, and the weather was very hot. It was not until mid-July that the grass started to grow after several heavy rains, and the temperature dropped a few days before the beginning of autumn. However, after a few rains, the grassland has returned to its previous beautiful scenery. (The last two pictures were taken in 2017). Update at the end of June 2019: The grass in Xiwuqi is really good, and it gets better as you go east (starting from Xilinhot). The newly added 8 pictures were taken in Wulan Wutai. Even though the pixel of the mobile phone is not high, the pictures look like wallpapers.

There was a big temperature difference between morning and night, but the stars were beautiful. What we gained was that we learned to ride a horse on the grassland and trot around the grassland a few times without the guidance of local herdsmen. It was a great sense of accomplishment!

We arrived at Xilin Gol League on National Day. The heating was turned on on October 15th. The temperature was very low. The grass on the grassland had turned yellow, and occasionally some green could be seen. We chartered a car to go to Xilin Gol Grassland for 350 for two people, including the chef's lunch. We walked and stopped along the way. In late autumn or early winter in Xilin Gol, the sun was very warm and the grassland was very warm, but it was cold without the sun. There was nowhere to hide on the grassland, so we had to get into the car. It was super cold to ride a horse, so it was recommended to go early, but the beef and mutton were still great. We ate shabu-shabu all day to warm our bodies.

The grass is OK, but the scenery depends on luck. Different scenery in different seasons

Inner Mongolia is really big. It took us about four or five hours to drive from Hohhot to Xilin Gol Grassland. We originally wanted to go to the most famous Hulunbuir, but it was too far.

We lived in a yurt, which was basically a big kang that could sleep four people. But it was really cold on the grassland at night, so we had to bring lots of thick clothes. I almost caught a cold.

The grassland is vast, but the grass is a little less and not so lush. But it was really exciting to see the grassland for the first time. I saw many horses and sheep. In the evening, I had Tibetan cuisine and roasted lamb.

The climate here is too dry, so you must bring lip balm, otherwise your lips will crack.

I went to the prairie because I participated in a volunteer activity to prevent sand. The five days on the prairie were particularly beautiful days. The sunrise, sunset, breeze, and strong but warm sunshine were all wonderful.

After seeing the grandeur of Xilin Gol Grassland, those grasslands such as Tagong Grassland, Gannan Grassland, and Tonghu Grassland can no longer surprise you in the slightest. Although these grasslands are of different types, only Xilin Gol can be so vast as the "city of the plains". The sky is lower and bluer than that of ordinary cities in the Central Plains. The road is on the national highway and occasionally on the provincial highway. The road conditions are pretty good. Just be careful to avoid the trucks carrying grass. There is no "Watch out for pedestrians" on the road signs, but there are many "Watch out for livestock". Sheep, horses, and cows often appear in the middle of the road, which is a beautiful scenery. The grass is taller and pricklier than expected, so try to wear long pants~

We arrived at Xilin Gol Grassland in mid-July. There were herds of cattle and sheep everywhere. The sky was blue and white, which is rare in our south. We had hand-pulled meat and milk tea for lunch. Their milk tea is salty and we are not used to it. The wind on the grassland is too strong, so we have to wear two layers of clothes at night.

We parked the car on the side of the road where it would not get in the way, and walked into the grassland. There were many horses and cows grazing leisurely. The cows would stare at you, making you feel guilty.

Xilin Gol Grassland is the birthplace of the Mongolian ethnic group, and its name means "mother river" in the hilly area in Mongolian.

This is a place that opens your heart. When you come here, you just want to sing loudly like the Mongolians. Unconsciously, you will stretch out the ending of each sentence. This is the broad-mindedness of the Mongolians.

This grassland is the only reason why our trip to Xilinhot was worthwhile.

It is true that Xilin Gol Grassland is beautiful, rich and resource-rich. This is clearly demonstrated on the G207 National Highway from Zhangbei to Xilinhot. Fully loaded heavy trucks sped past our car windows, transporting various resources to the capital. The wind turbines on the roadside are like crops in the fields, densely packed and orderly arranged.

The scenery in the Northwest is really great! It is the right choice to avoid the crowds during the golden holiday and go to the vast grasslands and the desolate desert! A memorable trip in a lifetime!
