Laomendong Historic District

Because it is located to the east of the South Gate of Nanjing City, it is called "Mendong". Opposite to Laomenxi, it is an important part of the Qinhuai Scenic Belt of Nanjing Confucius Temple.
Laomendong is a gathering place for traditional residential buildings in Nanjing. Since ancient times, it has been a place where merchants from the south of the Yangtze River gathered, where cultural talents gathered, and where aristocratic families lived.
While preserving historical buildings and cultural relics, the block has renovated old factories into Nanjing Academy of Painting and Calligraphy, Jinling Art Museum, and Old South City Memory Museum.
Introduce studios, century-old shops, cultural entertainment, antique clubs, etc., and become a cultural district integrating historical culture, leisure and entertainment, and tourist attractions.

Old Mendong.

On this day last year, the faces of people and the red lights reflected each other in this door.

The lights are the same every year, but the people are different every year.

The east wind blows thousands of flowers into bloom at night, and blows down stars like rain...fishes and dragons dance all night long.

The weather in Nanjing/Jinling is horrible. It's sunny in the east and rainy in the west. When I came back, the cold rain was hitting my face randomly. A little cold current came first, and then my heart was frozen.

Happy Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month.

The city's ancient appearance is preserved here, and there are many delicious foods, making it the best place for aimless wandering.

It was the end of the old lunar year when we arrived there. Laomendong was already filled with a strong New Year atmosphere, with big red lanterns hung high. When we walked to the base of the city wall, we could also see colorful pig lanterns and koi carp jumping over the dragon gate... Against the backdrop of the gray old city wall, it looked even more brilliant and dazzling.

Walking slowly around Laomendongli, the most interesting thing is the details on the corner walls, which always make you stop and take a look. Because of these details, this city seems to have a little more charm. The slightly mottled colored paintings on the white walls make us feel the folk customs; the literary language outside the coffee shop makes this place more romantic...

The big bird jumping up and down in the cage, the small urban sculptures at the corner, the flying dragon and roaring lion with a prominent sense of three-dimensionality, the quaint little scene outlined by broken porcelain pieces... Each one is worth savoring, and each one blends harmoniously with Laomendong. It is also because of these little thoughts that can be found at a glance that Laomendong has more humanistic charm and feelings.

In these distinctive areas, you can often see young people taking wedding photos there. I hope they will not just use Laomendong as the background of the photos, but truly recognize the charm of this city.

While retaining the traces of the city, Laomendong has also incorporated a lot of modern atmosphere. Walking through the empty narrow alleys, you can see some fashionable symbols from time to time, such as this year's popular Peppa Pig and the smiling Uncle Jiang... They seem to have become the unique symbols of this place.

The mottled old wall is protected by glass, as if it freezes a memory and time. The rusty door knocker and the wooden chairs have long been engraved with the rings of time; the blue brick wall is covered with a layer of colorful new bricks, which has become a place for people to leave messages and express their love; there are some messy weeds on the door wall, but it still exudes green vitality.

When you go deep into Laomendong, you will find delicious food, such as steamed cakes, plum blossom cakes, and other kinds of desserts that are mouth-watering.

It was about 8 o'clock when I arrived at Laomendong. I ate some roasted duck intestines and the internet-famous osmanthus cake. There was a shop run by a few aunts in the corner, specializing in mini shortbread and preserved vegetable cake. In fact, I think the shortbread and pancakes I ate later were all evolved from these. I feel that they are more worth eating, but they are not as popular as the internet-famous ones.

Generally speaking, Laomendong is an ancient town that has not been fully developed. There are also some cultural and creative stores in it, which is a bit like Beijing's 798. It is not very commercialized. Why? Because the refrigerator magnets here are cheaper and prettier than those in Pioneer Bookstore. The distance between Laomendong and Confucius Temple is only 20 minutes on foot, so you can arrange to visit them together.

It takes only 10 minutes to walk from Zhonghuamen to Laomendong. Compared with the commercial area around Confucius Temple, this place is more peaceful and less noisy. When you step into Laomendong, you will see small bridges, flowing water, and various literary shops, which are particularly beautiful under the decoration of neon lights. The streets are all renovated old houses, and each one seems to be narrating the scenery and charm of the past.

When the Hui-style architecture catches my eyes, there is only one word that comes to my mind: worth it!

The point is that there are not many tourists here. I ate the plum blossom cake that I didn't eat last night, and the photos I took were also beautiful. The driver recommended a salted duck restaurant, but the two idiots forgot the name of the restaurant after they got here. Next time if a friend asks me to recommend a place to eat snacks, I will first recommend Laodongmen.

By Dalis |

The overall feeling of Laomendong is still that of a small street in the south.

It rained the night before and stopped in the morning, but the old street was still wet and had a feeling.

Occasionally, I see some modern colors, which are still very eye-catching.

I probably won't come to this kind of place at night, because I'll start to daydream.

In order to create an atmosphere, the streets also sprayed water mist. I don’t know if it was timed, but I caught the spray. In the mist and rain, it felt amazing.

By Zhang Xianzhi |

The renovated Lao Mendong also introduced water into the street, adding some vitality to Lao Mendong. Since Lao Mendong was only developed five years ago, not many people know about it, so it is particularly quiet compared to the Confucius Temple area with bright lights and bustling voices at night. Entering the Lao Mendong neighborhood, the first thing that attracted me was the Junhui Tree House at the west end of the street. This is a renovated old Hui-style building that not only retains the ancient and heavy appearance of Hui-style architecture and the carved beams and painted buildings inside, but also undergoes bold modern transformation.

As early as the Three Kingdoms period, there were residential settlements in Mendong area. In the Ming Dynasty, Zhonghua Gate and the inner Qinhuai River became the economic center of the city, and it became an important distribution center for commerce and handicrafts, presenting a prosperous scene. After the late Qing Dynasty, the old south of the city, such as Laomendong and Laomenxi, gradually became areas with residential functions as the main function, which concentratedly embodied the style of traditional residential buildings in the old south of Nanjing.

The Laomendong Historical and Cultural District stretches from Changle Road in the north to the Ming City Wall in the south, from Jiangning Road in the east to the inner Qinhuai River in the Zhonghuamen Castle section in the west. It covers a total area of about 700,000 square meters and has been one of the core functional areas of Confucius Temple in history. It has opened Jinling Scripture Carving, Nanjing Baiju, Deyun Club, handmade kites, cloth paintings, bamboo carvings, paper cutting, string puppets and other folk crafts, and has launched a variety of traditional food and snacks in Nanjing.

The transportation is very convenient. The subway can go directly to Confucius Temple. You can visit the two attractions at the same time. But I personally like Laomendong more. Confucius Temple is more messy. The bathroom in Laomendong is more attentive. Basically, the local building is converted into a bathroom, which is clean and hygienic.

Laomendong is very quiet and petty. Walking through the alleys on both sides, it feels like traveling back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is the kind of place where you don't want to go out after being so quiet. When the sun just came out early in the morning, the warm Laomendong really makes people reluctant to leave. I like this attraction and give it a five-point praise.

Laomendong is a place where snacks gather. Friends who love to eat should not miss it. I went to Laomendong late that day, so I didn’t eat much. I planned to come again the next day. The snacks in Laomendong are very unique, such as Jiang Youji’s beef pot stickers, beef wontons, Lan Laoda’s sugar porridge, sugar taro seedlings, Lu’s plum blossom cake, Xiao Zheng’s crispy sesame cake, and a stinky tofu (actually not stinky)

In addition to eating, the night view here is quite beautiful. At night, all the decorative lights of the businesses will be turned on, which feels very good.

Here, there are other delicacies such as beef soup, but I can't eat so many other delicacies by myself. When my friends went to experience it, they only ordered the most classic beef pot stickers and beef wontons. Pot stickers dipped in vinegar will be very good. Tips: You can order half a portion of pot stickers. I ordered half a portion for 8 yuan (4 pieces). The beef wontons are also good. All the delicacies are basically 5 yuan, 10 yuan, basically integer multiples. All merchants have Alipay or WeChat payment, which is very convenient.

Nanjing Laomendong Pedestrian Street is located in Qinhuai District, close to Confucius Temple, and is an important part of Nanjing's historical and cultural district. The pedestrian street is dominated by Ming and Qing style buildings, with blue bricks and black tiles, carved beams and painted buildings, and the overall atmosphere is simple and elegant. There are many shops on both sides of the street, including traditional handicraft shops, modern restaurants and cultural and creative shops, blending tradition and modernity. Visitors can taste authentic Nanjing snacks, such as duck blood vermicelli soup, xiaolongbao, etc., and can also feel the strong historical and cultural atmosphere. However, due to the large number of tourists, it is a bit crowded during holidays and the commercial atmosphere is a bit heavy. Overall, Laomendong Pedestrian Street is suitable for a short visit. It can not only feel the historical heritage of Nanjing, but also meet the needs of shopping and food, but the in-depth experience is slightly insufficient.

I studied in Nanjing for four years, but I had never been to Laomendong. This year I came back to attend a wedding and walked from Confucius Temple. Compared with the commercialization and congestion of Confucius Temple, this place is more romantic, a bit like the atmosphere of Gulangyu Island.

By Gai Gai Chen |

It is still highly recommended. It is very close to the Qinhuai River Scenic Area. Laomendong is located at the intersection of Hoop Tong Alley and Jianzi Alley in Nanjing Confucius Temple. Today, the Laomendong Conservation Area extends to Jiangning Road in the east, the Inner Qinhuai River in the Zhonghuamen Castle Section in the west, Madao Street in the north, and the Ming City Wall in the south.

The traditional Chinese wooden buildings and horse-head walls can evoke people's memories of the old south city. There are four groups of street sculptures around the Laomendong memorial archway. The four groups of lifelike sculptures of rickshaw drivers, sugar taro seedlings, old postboxes, and schoolchildren entering the museum are vividly displayed here. The costumes of the Ming and Qing dynasties perfectly show the life of the residents of Laomendong during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The style of the old city is also displayed between these sculptures. There are also many famous snacks here.

By Cookie |

There is a couplet on both sides of the Laomendong Archway, which says: The streets and alleys are full of smoke and water from the Six Dynasties, and the common people will write a great article for the ages. In just 22 words, the glory created by the generations of Nanjing people in building the ancient city and the depth of the city are presented. The snack street gathers Jiang Youji pot stickers, Jiming soup dumplings, Lan Lao Da sugar lotus root porridge, Huang Qinji jelly, Xiao Zheng sesame cakes and other Nanjing delicacies that make foodies drool. There is also Junhui Bookstore and Guo Degang's crosstalk. The people are a little better than those in Confucius Temple.

The duck oil pastry was not as delicious as rumored, it was too dry. After trying three flavors, I found that there was nothing special about any of them. Chen Ji’s stinky tofu had a slightly strong taste, it’s not that it’s bad, but people with strong tastes may choose to try it. The taste was also very good and met the standard taste of stinky tofu, because the sauce was really flavorful!

Laomendong was originally an ancient place name in the southern part of Nanjing, and the "gate" refers to Zhonghua Gate. It was once the most prosperous place for business in Nanjing, and it was also an area with dense residential areas. Passing through the antique archway with the three characters "Laomendong" inscribed on it, it seems like walking into another world. There are mottled stone slabs under your feet, and Chinese-style wooden buildings with Nanjing residential characteristics on both sides. When you look up, you can see the horse head wall, and there is no sound...

Laomendong must be recommended. It feels more suitable for young people to eat and drink. There are many snacks and many trendy restaurants. If you want to eat in Laomendong, especially restaurants with good reputation, it is recommended to make reservations in advance. We went to three restaurants and they were all full, so we had no choice but to pick one at random. I liked the storefront and decoration, but this restaurant did not provide boiled water. Later I figured out that it was not that they did not provide it, but that you had to pay to provide it.

The night view of Laomendong is very beautiful. You can walk deep into the alleys where there are fewer people and the scenery is better.

Personally, I feel that Laomendong is more worth visiting than the Confucius Temple on Qinhuai River. Qinhuai River offers more of a crowded and bustling atmosphere and more of a sense of nostalgia, while Laomendong offers more of history and architecture. Going south from Laomendong is Zhonghuamen, and outside of Zhonghuamen is the ruins of Baoen Temple.

By Su Chen |

On the way, the driver told us

It was around 9 o'clock in the evening. The lady at the front desk said there was still food in Lao Mendong, but not many restaurants were open. We had grilled skewers and duck blood vermicelli soup. The nightlife here is not rich. The night view of Lao Mendong is also great.

Laomendong is actually quite big. At least in my opinion, it is more comfortable than Xitang Ancient Town. Xitang is better because it has more bars... I took a lot of photos of the luxury houses and alleys. They are beautiful. I will bring my family here to have tea and look at the old luxury houses in the future. Hahaha, oh, I saw a dessert shop selling soufflé in the alley. They have seats.

Laomendong is not far from the Qinhuai River area. You can arrive there in a short while by walking or cycling following the navigation.

After walking into Laomendong, I found that the main street here has an interesting name, called "Houbong Lane".

At the end of the main street, you will reach the foot of the Ming city wall. On both sides of the end are old streets and alleys. Walking into the old alleys, you can feel the style of the old city. There are not as many people here as in Confucius Temple, only some bustling crowds.

With the afternoon sunlight, the alley is perfect for taking photos.

When I came to Laomendong, I felt that I liked it more. It has a very literary atmosphere and the overall environment is very clean. This is a real historical and cultural district.

The block retains a large number of historical buildings and cultural relics protection buildings. On this basis, they have been converted into academies, art galleries, studios, characteristic residential hotels, etc. There are commercial elements, but they are well integrated with the old city streets. It is quiet and simple, yet fashionable and prosperous.

Blue bricks, white walls and vines are the most quaint and beautiful decorations in the old city.

I wandered around Laomendong for a long time. There were so many narrow alleys like this that I really didn't want to leave.

By Piglet0 jogging |

Unexpectedly, the best place in Nanjing this time was the last stop - Laomendong. Later, I heard from the Didi driver that it was newly built, but it gave people a good and clean feeling. It is a good place to take photos and there are many Internet celebrity shops. It is quite open. There are not as many people as Confucius Temple. However, the small sesame cakes recommended by Dianping Shangren (the queue is really long) and Jiang Youji are really ordinary shops, similar to Wufangzhai in Jiaxing. Just try it and don't have any expectations.

By Trend vision |

There are quiet alleys all over the block. Young and fashionable handsome men and beautiful women walk in the alleys and take selfies with their mobile phones from time to time. Although there are businesses, they are integrated with the ancient streets. The quietness and antiquity are fashionable, and the antiquity is quiet and prosperous. This block is so good that it is hard to describe it with words.

There are many shops selling souvenirs, photo studios, snacks, etc.

There are also many former residences nearby that you can visit.

This is a place that tour buses will not take you to, so there are few people and no noise. I feel that I am far away from Confucius Temple. There is an old Mendong snack bar near the gathering point of the tourist bus. Holding the fermented rice dumplings in the slightly cool night, I feel that there is really nothing sweeter and happier than this. The preserved vegetable cake next door is also delicious. I can't resist the temptation of preserved vegetables. I took a bite while it was hot. The aroma of preserved vegetables and the charred fragrance of the cake are delicious. But it must be hot. If it is cold, it will be less crispy and more twisted. There are several stores in Lao Mendong that need to be checked in, including Jiang Youji, which is still four years away from being a century-old store, Lan Lao Da Sugar Porridge Lotus Root Shop next door, Lu's Plum Blossom Cake, and Zhu Ji Xiao Zheng Shaobing. Going west all the way, there are many small shops queuing up, fried skewers, grilled food, milk tea, I know that I have a small appetite, but my ideals are full. There are many things on the food list that I haven't eaten yet, so I won't stop in front of these foods that can be eaten 365 days a year.

A place that I called Old East Gate for more than a month before I came here; a place where the scenery is completely different in the morning and evening;

The shops in Lao Mendong open around 9:30, so if you go early, you can see the whole picture of Lao Mendong. However, Xiao Zheng Pastry Shop opens earlier, and people will start queuing after 8:30, so if you want to eat, go early.

This is where the wealthy people of the Ming Dynasty lived. Each house retains ancient features, but has now been turned into shops selling all kinds of goods and delicacies.

Laomendong is really very romantic. Hui-style architecture. I like it more than Confucius Temple.

In addition to many celebrity residences and historic buildings, the Laomendong Cultural District also has a variety of traditional Nanjing food and snacks, as well as some folk handicrafts. The Pioneer Bookstore also has a branch in Laomendong. The most impressive thing about Laomendong is that the pool near the archway is filled with smoke, which looks like a water vapor spray device, spraying fine water vapor that fills the pool surrounded by green trees. Pretty girls and cute children stand by the pool, like a fairyland. Many photographers set up tripods to take pictures by the pool. It is very lively~

I visited Laomendong on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The round moon, white walls and black tiles gave it a unique ancient charm, as if it had traveled through a thousand years.

Turn the corner and walk into the alley, where you can find all kinds of snacks. Eating snacks and appreciating the moon is so relaxing. Let's enjoy the old Mendong during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Compared to Confucius Temple, this place has fewer people and is more refined. I recommend you to come here for a stroll. There are many small shops with good quality, cheap and delicious food that are worth exploring, and the gravel road is very enjoyable to walk on.

Laomendong is not far from the Confucius Temple and is close to the city wall. Outside the city is the Qinhuai River. Like the Confucius Temple, it is an ancient nostalgic pedestrian street that combines shopping and food. If you like to take pictures in Hanfu, you can rent a set of Hanfu here for shooting. The most attractive thing here is the food. Basically, there are long queues in front of the shops.
