Xuanwu Gate is a gate of Nanjing's Ming City Wall that was opened in 1908. It was originally named Fengrun Gate and is located between Shen Ce Gate, Jiefang Gate and Taiping Gate. It was named because it is close to Xuanwu Lake and is the west gate of Xuanwu Lake Park. Xuanwu Gate was opened in the 34th year of Emperor Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1908). It was a major turning point for Xuanwu Lake, marking that Xuanwu Lake officially became a park in the modern sense. In April 1928, the National Government changed Fengrun Gate to Xuanwu Gate; in 1929, Mr. Cai Yuanpei, then president of the Academia Sinica, was invited to write the three characters "Xuanwu Gate" on the plaque, which is still used today. In 1931, Xuanwu Gate was changed from a single-hole arch gate to a three-hole arch gate.

The current Xuanwu Gate was not a gate of Nanjing City in the early years, but was opened in the late Qing Dynasty. Outside the gate is Xuanwu Lake Park.

Xuanwu Gate is part of the Ming City Wall. If you walk along the wall, you can reach several other gates: Shen Ce Gate and Jiefang Gate, etc., but it takes a long time to get there.

Xuanwu Gate, Shence Gate and Jiefang Gate are all next to Xuanwu Lake, and you can see the nearby Xuanwu Lake Park from the city wall.

Xuanwu Lake Park is a free check-in attraction. The park is beautiful and worth a visit.

By Dora Big Cat |

It costs 30 yuan per person to go up the city wall. Below the gate is Xuanwu Lake Park (free and open to the public). There are not many people on the city wall. The stone of the city wall has the place of manufacture and the time of construction, but many of the words are not clear. It seems that there are 5 gates in total. We went from Xuanwu Gate to Jiefang Gate, which is 1.5 kilometers. After coming down, we went into Xuanwu Lake Park to take a bus tour. It took about 2.5 hours in total. After coming out, we can go to Jiming Temple again, which is relatively smooth. The scenery looking down from the city wall is very good!

By MindyC |

There is a park inside. It is still too hot to go there in summer. It may be more beautiful in spring when the flowers are in bloom!

The Ming City Wall of Xuanwu Gate remembers the history of Nanjing and connects the past and present of this ancient city. The green space by the lake is beautiful and emerald. The sun rises and breaks through the clouds.

By World Traveler |

The tragic story began. The battlements on both sides of the city wall were relatively high. Walking along the city wall, the scenery I saw was far inferior to that below the city. The most tragic thing was that the road on the city wall was a bit bumpy, and I accidentally twisted my ankle.

Xuanwu Gate is named after its proximity to Xuanwu Lake! The ruins of Nanjing Ming City Wall still have 20 kilometers of walls preserved, some of which were repaired later!

By Look around |

The Azure Dragon is in the east, the White Tiger is in the west, the Vermillion Bird is in the south, and the Black Tortoise is in the north. Xuanwu Lake must be in the north of Nanjing. The lake is very large, and you can only visit the area near Xuanwu Gate and Jiming Temple, which is also the main attraction of Xuanwu Lake.

By His Royal Highness Wang Jiuye |

When traveling to Nanjing, you must always visit here. There is no entrance fee to Xuanwu Lake Park, but there is a fee to go up the city wall. The Xuanwu Gate here is not the Xuanwu Gate of the Xuanwu Gate Incident in the Tang Dynasty, but the main gate of Xuanwu Lake Park, so it is also called Xuanwu Gate.

By make a sightseeing tour |

A gate on the west side of Xuanwu Lake Park is also a gate on the ancient city wall of Nanjing. Now Xuanwu Lake is open to the public free of charge.

We went there during the winter of the Spring Festival. It was really cold walking on the lake, with the north wind howling. At that time, I thought, we two are really stupid to come here from so far away to blow in the cold wind. But fortunately, there were so many stupid people with us, so there were not many people. The subway entrance is right outside Xuanwu Gate, so transportation is convenient.

By Diaspora |

Xuanwu Gate is the gate of Nanjing Ming City Wall, and now it is the gate of Xuanwu Lake Park. The towering city wall and three arches are particularly majestic.

By Tiramisu Bear |

Exit from the back door of Jiming Temple and walk for 2-3 minutes to the Jiefang Gate of Xuanwu Lake Park (free admission, there are sightseeing buses inside, RMB 30 for a round trip, RMB 10/2 stations). Xuanwu Lake, also known as Moling Lake, is the largest royal lake garden in China. The total area of Xuanwu Lake Park is about 530 hectares, of which the water surface is about 368 hectares, so it is actually a large park around the lake, with lake views everywhere, and different everywhere. At this time, the sky was drizzling, adding to the sense of vastness. You can see Jiming Temple in the distance. There are also many rockery and pavilions in the park. From Jiefang Gate to Xuanwu Gate, it is about 1/4 of the way around Xuanwu Lake. It takes about 1-2 hours to walk out of Xuanwu Gate.

By A chic life |

The park is very lively when you enter it. There are people dancing, watching movies, and wandering around. Due to time constraints, I didn't cross the bridge and go inside. It is a good place for Nanjing citizens to go in their spare time.

Nanjing's well-preserved ancient city gate is tall and magnificent, reflecting the majesty of the ancient capital.

By The Rice Eater |

This is the most magnificent gate in Nanjing capital city. Its three arches are carved with cloud patterns, the gate walls are ancient and mottled, and the city tower with green eaves, red pillars and golden railings makes it look particularly elegant and beautiful.

By The Rice Eater |

Walking on the open Cuihong Embankment, which is the road connecting Xuanwu Gate and Huanzhou, there are bright flowers on both sides from time to time, adding a touch of color to the embankment. The calm lake reflects several high-rise buildings in the city, which are well-spaced and match the quiet Xuanwu Lake in harmony. Xuanwu Gate, which is more like the starting point of Xuanwu Lake, can be said to be the most gorgeous of the many gates in Nanjing. The cloud-patterned three-vaulted gate, some mottled walls, and the tower with green eaves, red pillars and golden railings are particularly elegant and beautiful, attracting many tourists. There are also snack shops and sightseeing buses inside Xuanwu Gate. The three characters "Xuanwu Gate" on the lintel were written by Mr. Cai Yuanpei.

Xuanwu Gate, in the first year of the Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1909), Duan Fang, the governor-general of Liangjiang, and Zhang Renjun opened a new gate at the west end of the Ming city wall of Xuanwu Lake to facilitate the guests visiting the "Nanyang Industrial Exposition" to visit Xuanwu Lake. The gate was completed in 1910. Because Zhang Renjun was from Fengrun, Hebei, this gate was called "Fengrun Gate". Its opening marked that Xuanwu Lake officially became a "park" in the modern sense. In 1928, it was changed to "Xuanwu Gate". Mr. Cai Yuanpei was invited to write the name of the gate. In 1934, two more doorways were added on the left and right. In 1984, the Xuanwu Gate Tower was built, which has been renovated several times and is still preserved today. This gate is the most important of the five gates of Xuanwu Lake.

Xuanwu Gate was opened in the 34th year of Emperor Guangxu's reign (1908). Duan Fang, then Governor-General of Liangjiang and Minister of Commerce of Nanyang, was ordered to hold the Nanyang Industrial Exposition. In order to facilitate Chinese and foreign guests to visit Xuanwu Lake, he decided to open a gate on this section of the wall. After Duan Fang was transferred, the project was not yet completed. Zhang Renjun, the successor of the Governor-General the following year, was in charge. Because Zhang Renjun's hometown was Fengrun, Hebei, it was named "Fengrun Gate". The opening of Fengrun Gate was a major turning point for Xuanwu Lake, marking that Xuanwu Lake officially became a park in the modern sense of history.

In January 1988, the entire section of Nanjing Ming City Wall, including Xuanwu Gate, was confirmed as a national key cultural relic protection site. In November 2012, the Ming City Wall (Beijing) was included in the China World Cultural Heritage Tentative List as the lead city of the "China Ming and Qing City Walls" project.

Nanjing Xuanwu Gate is an ancient city gate in the ancient city of Nanjing. It is now the main gate of Xuanwu Lake Park. It was started to be built when Ming Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang established Nanjing as the capital and it took 21 years to complete.

Opening hours: 6:00-18:00, closing time on weekends is 20:00 Tickets: Free

The circumference of Nanjing City in the Ming Dynasty was 33.65 kilometers, with an average height of 12 meters and a width of 10 to 18 meters. The city wall was built with stone strips as the foundation and huge bricks as the body. The bricks were fired with high-quality clay and white porcelain clay, and each brick weighed 20 to 40 kilograms. The names of the prefectures and counties where the bricks were made and the names of the brickmakers and the dates of firing were printed on the bricks. The adhesive was made of glutinous rice paste mixed with lime, which was very strong. Despite the wind and rain over the years, 20 kilometers of the city wall have been preserved intact. There are 13 city gates, 13,600 battlements, and more than 200 fortresses in the whole city of Nanjing. The largest one is the Jubao Gate (now Zhonghua Gate) in the south. Nanjing Xuanwu Gate is now open to the public free of charge. It was called Sangpo before the Six Dynasties and Beihu during the Jin Dynasty. It was a place for training the navy. In history, in addition to training the navy, it has always been a recreational place for emperors and ministers. It was opened as a park in 1909. At that time, it was called Yuanwu Lake Park, and was also called Wuzhou Park, Houhu Lake, etc. In May of the 25th year of Yuanjia (448) during the reign of Emperor Wen of the Song Dynasty, a black dragon was seen in the lake, so it was renamed Xuanwu Lake. After Zhu Yuanzhang of the Ming Dynasty established Nanjing as the capital, he built a Huangce Library in Xuanwu Lake to store the national household grain tax books.

The first place I went to was the Ming City Wall in the summer of 2013. Standing on the Ming City Wall, someone suggested going to Xuanwu Lake Park. I looked at the cruise ships on the lake and didn't think much of it. It's just a lake! I regretted my ignorance and arbitrariness for a long time. Later in the winter of 2015, I went to Nanjing Xuanwu Lake again. Not long after entering, my child ran crazy and forgot to pee... I went back to the hotel in a mess. The next day, I got up early and went in with the old man and old woman who were doing morning exercises before dawn. It took two hours to visit four islands. I went there again during the Spring Festival of 2016, starting from the Huanhu Road of the railway station and strolling to Xuanwu Gate. If time permits, I would like to stay there for a whole day. Looking at other people's photos, it is beautiful all year round.
