Zhonghua Gate

Zhonghua Gate is the south gate of the capital city in the Ming Dynasty and is also the best-preserved city gate in Nanjing.
The Wengcheng project is magnificent and the structure is complex. The city is divided into two floors, with four gates and 27 caves for hiding soldiers, which can store 3,000 soldiers. It is the largest Wengcheng in my country.
Zhonghua Gate was the traffic hub of the old city of Nanjing. The Laomen East and Laomen West, separated by Zhonghua Gate, have been prosperous areas in the south of the Yangtze River since ancient times.
The former city gates are now covered with green jade walls. What comes to your face is the magnificent city walls, weathered and peeling bricks and overgrown roads.

The recommended visiting time is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Zhonghua Gate looks quite magnificent from a distance. After getting the ticket and entering, you can pass through three inner city walls and enter the city wall. You can see 6 original empty caves under the third wall. When I went there, 4 were open, and the other two seemed to be undeveloped. The cave feels cool and is a good place to escape the heat in summer. The caves are large and small, and ancient soldiers, food, and military supplies were stored here. Shuttle under the cave walls and feel the wisdom of the ancients. It is really amazing that such buildings were built by hand in an era without modern machinery.

There are several holes on the second floor of the city wall, which have been transformed into a place to introduce the history of various dynasties of Zhonghua Gate and sell souvenirs.

You can see the scenery of Nanjing city and Qinhuai River from the top of the city wall (it seems that there is nothing particularly beautiful). Some parts of the wall are cemented, which should be the result of repairs in this dynasty.

Generally speaking it's OK. Tourists who have not been to the city wall can come and have a look.

It should be noted that many of the stone tiles on the city wall have rotted into pits, so be careful not to step on empty space when walking.

It is located on Zhonghua Road. I went to Zhonghua Gate twice, once in the morning and once in the evening. If I hadn't listened to the explanation during the day, I might have thought that the Zhonghua Gate scenic area would be boring. After listening to it, I felt that Zhonghua Gate is also a meaningful attraction because it is also a subdivision of the Qinhuai Lantern Festival. So if you go at night, the night view is highly recommended. It is also nice to watch the Qinhuai River from a distance.

There is a free guided tour at Zhonghua Gate. When we arrived, there was one at 16:30. We followed the guide and listened to the guide all the way. After the first three auxiliary gates, the fourth one is the main gate. You can go up to the tower along the steps. These holes should be the caves for hiding soldiers.

Looking down from the city wall, the lights of the Da Baoen Temple on the other side of the Qinhuai River are not yet on, and the pleasure boats for the night tour of Qinhuai are still quietly waiting for tourists.

The electric cars on the city wall are no longer used after 17:00... but the shape of the electric cars is a bit pleasing. The antique buildings on the other side of the city wall should be the Confucius Temple area. Watching the lights slowly light up. Going down the city tower, I saw the ground full of fallen ginkgo trees.

Nanjing Zhonghuamen Barbican is a relic of the Ming Dynasty city wall. Its exquisite military defense concept can be regarded as a model of ancient city construction. After 600 years of wind and rain erosion, the mottled inscriptions of "Artisan's name" on the bricks and stones of the city wall still exist. These marks of responsibility of Ming Dynasty craftsmen are more historically penetrating than any explanatory signs.

However, the modern renovation project left too many cement patches, and the neat battlement lines are like copied and pasted industrial products, eliminating the time wrinkles that cultural relics should have. The antique shops on both sides of the city climbing trail sell the same cultural and creative products as scenic spots across the country. Drone performances have replaced ancient beacons, and the experience of the 50-yuan ticket is more like paying for the new city wall economy. When the historical scene becomes a background board for light and shadow shows, our dialogue with the city wall is ultimately separated by a layer of tempered glass.

When the Jin Dynasty moved south, this place was the old Chang'an.

The land is the emperor's residence, and the mountain is the dragon and tiger circle.

The sky of Jinling is magnificent, and the natural moat is clear and calm.

The drunkard returned home, singing Wu songs to himself.

The land embraces the power of Jinling, and the river flows back to the city.

At that time, there were millions of households, and red buildings were built on both sides of the road.

A country is destroyed before the spring grass, and the royal palace is buried under the ancient hills.

Only the moon over Houhu Lake remains, facing Yingzhou on the waves.

Zhonghua Gate was built on the site of the old capital of Southern Tang Dynasty at the end of Yuan Dynasty and was not completed until the beginning of Ming Dynasty. The current Wengcheng has three gates and a cave for hiding soldiers. It is large in scale, majestic and well preserved.

Zhonghua Gate is one of the thirteen gates of the Ming Dynasty in Nanjing City Wall. Formerly known as Jubao Gate, it is the largest existing gate in China and the best-preserved and most complex fortress city in the world. Its construction scale is second only to Tongji Gate (now no longer in existence), and it is known as the "No. 1 City Wall in the World". Zhonghua Gate has a strict layout and unique structure. It is an important physical material for studying ancient Chinese military facilities. It occupies an important position in military, historical, cultural and urban construction history. There are few people during the day, so you can take a walk or rent a car. At night, you can feel the lights of the Qinhuai River and look at the light show of the Baoen New Tower. Walking east along the city wall, you will soon reach Laomen East. Therefore, it is recommended that you visit the two attractions together.

Zhonghua Gate is the south gate of the capital city (the capital city wall), known as Jubao Gate in the Ming Dynasty. It is the largest castle-style gate among the thirteen gates of the ancient city wall of Nanjing, and it is also the best-preserved and most complex ancient castle in the world today.

Zhonghua Gate was built between the 26th year of Zhizheng in the Yuan Dynasty and the 19th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1369-1386), and was expanded on the basis of the south gate of the capital of the Southern Tang Dynasty. It has a strict layout and unique structure, with three urn cities and four arch gates. Each arch gate has a jack gate and double wooden doors that can be activated up and down. When the enemy soldiers attack, the jack gate inside the city gate will quickly drop to cut off the retreat route, and the ambushes will be sent out from all sides to annihilate them one by one, just like catching a turtle in a jar.

If you look closely at each brick of the city wall, you can vaguely see the name of the person who made the brick. This is a product of the almost strict quality tracking system implemented by Emperor Taizu of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang, but it does ensure the high quality of the wall bricks.

The urn city was one of the main defense facilities of ancient cities, but people always thought of catching a turtle in a jar.

The city wall near Zhonghua Gate felt particularly high and wide. The main gate was under construction at that time, and I almost thought it was not open. I walked around the entire Zhonghua Gate before I found the small entrance.

On the last day, I decided to visit Zhonghuamen Wengcheng. The weather was good and not too hot. I bought the ticket early on the public platform and entered smoothly. There were not too many people. There were free tour guides. I suggest you listen to them. There are several exhibition halls on the second floor. I walked around them, but they were not big. The soldiers' cave on the first floor was quite shocking. When I walked over, I felt a gloomy feeling. If it wasn't so hot, I could rent a bicycle on the wall, which would definitely be a good way to go.

It's a good experience. I just feel that the 50 yuan ticket is too expensive, 20-30 is about the same.

You can rent a bicycle on the city wall and ride it. There are many stories about Zhonghua Gate, which you can search on Baidu, such as Shen Wansan's cornucopia and catching a turtle in a jar. In addition, the three words "Zhonghua Gate" are said to have been written by Chiang Kai-shek.

The ticket to Zhonghuamen Wengcheng is 50 yuan. After buying the ticket and entering the gate, the old man at the gate told us to wait at the gate for a while because tourists taking a cruise ship will be coming soon, and there will be tour guides to give them explanations, and we can listen together.

The explanation is not long, but it is very interesting. You must listen to the story about Nanjing and the cornucopia. After listening, you can climb the city wall to visit and see some siege equipment.

As night fell, the wind was very strong and the Great Baoen Pagoda was visible in the distance.

Zhu Yuanzhang spent six million taels of gold to build it. It has four gates and a 1,000-pound gate. It also has the world's largest well-preserved urn city, with 27 hiding holes that can hide 3,000 soldiers. You can ride on the gate tower. I heard that the Japanese fought for three days but couldn't break through the Zhonghua Gate. They had to open a hole on the side to enter Nanjing. It's an eye-opener for those of us in the Pearl River Delta who didn't grow up with city gates!

We did not come to this attraction alone, but chose it when choosing the Qinhuai River cruise route. The price is much cheaper than coming to Zhonghuamen alone. It is recommended to buy it.

Zhonghua Gate is the largest urn city in the world today. It occupies an important position in history, culture, military and architectural design. In particular, it is composed of three urn cities in military terms. Each city cave has a mechanism, a door and a gate. As long as the enemy invades, they can be caught in the urn. There is a cave for hiding soldiers inside that can accommodate more than 3,000 people. The wisdom of the ancient Chinese is unparalleled. It is worth a visit. The ticket price is a bit expensive. Zhonghua Gate is one of the thirteen Ming Dynasty city gates in the Nanjing City Wall. Originally named Jubao Gate, it is the largest existing city gate in China and also the best-preserved and most complex fortress city in the world.

No matter how big it is, it is a city gate after all, and the entire Zhonghuamen Wengcheng can be visited within an hour. The ticket is 50 yuan, so everyone should choose carefully according to their interests.

Of course, Zhonghua Gate is not an isolated city gate, but is connected to the Ming City Wall. You can walk along the top of the city wall all the way to the Confucius Temple and then go down the city wall.

By On the Road |

I visited Zhonghua Gate on the weekend. I have been in Nanjing for more than ten years and have passed by it many times. This is the first time I have come into such close contact with it. As the most perfectly preserved ancient city wall in the country, it feels like the Great Wall. The junction of the ten-mile Qinhuai River and the five-mile east and west, I remember that a "Go Fighting" program was filmed here. The overlap between the TV pictures and reality is even deeper. After entering the city gate, I met a group of tourists who came to play by boat from the Qinhuai River. I followed the tour guide to explain. There is an exhibition hall on the second floor that introduces the tortuous history of Nanjing City Wall in the form of comics. The open platform on the third floor displays models of ancient defense and attack weapons. Tourists walked along the empty city wall in twos and threes in the afterglow of the sunset, and their children ran around and laughed. This is probably how a happy life is.

The ever-changing Nanjing city and the ancient city wall full of historical vicissitudes are perfectly intertwined, which always makes you fall into contemplation. If you have enough time, it is a good place to relax.

For me, this place is really super super awesome. I like the feeling of the Great Wall very much. I highly recommend it.

The city wall is very long and you can walk for a long time while enjoying the scenery of Nanjing.

Moreover, this attraction is not crowded, especially at the top of the city wall. When I went there on the weekend, there were only three or five people on the city wall. It was very empty and comfortable.

Generally, tour groups do not bring tourists to the top of the city wall, so there are very few people there. There are still people running there in the evening, and the road condition is very good.

You can rent bicycles and sightseeing buses there. If you are in a hurry, you can choose this method, but I still prefer to walk.

The city wall can extend very far in both directions.

The weeds on the west side are more historical

To the east is where you can rent bicycles and finally reach the Shuiguan Ruins and Confucius Temple.

It is highly recommended to choose a good weather to hike here and take a tour guide to give you a good understanding of the history of this place!

The city wall is not big but the city wall is far away.

The downside is that many exits are closed after 5 o'clock, so you may not be able to get off after going up. This is how I ended up walking to the Shuiguan Ruins... It's super far, so arrange your time

The first stop for four elderly people and a child to visit Nanjing is worth a walk. The tour guide explained in detail. There is also a special exhibition hall on the second floor that introduces the history of Nanjing City Wall in detail in the form of comics. The platform on the third floor is open to display ancient defense and attack weapons. We took an electric car along the city wall to Dongshuiguan and walked the most well-preserved ancient city wall in the country. The electric car master explained along the way, which was great.

By Warm black and white |

I have visited the city walls of the six ancient capitals. The one in Zhonghuamen Wengcheng is relatively well preserved, probably because it is relatively recent.

By Wind Array Fox |

It was originally a nice place, whether it was the historical sites, the introduction, the story, or the light show, but I was choked by a rat's mouth as soon as I entered the door. Let me tell you slowly:

On February 3, 2017, the first day of work on the seventh day of the Lunar New Year, it was still drizzling at around 4pm. I got off the bus from Nanjing South and went directly to Zhonghua Gate. As a result, I was not allowed to enter the South Gate, so I went around the North Gate. I took a few photos just after entering, and I was extremely angry. There were Chinese and foreign introductions to Zhonghua Gate on both sides of the second city gate. The Chinese introduction clearly stated "When the Japanese army invaded Nanjing in the winter of 1937", but the Japanese translation on the opposite wall did not include this paragraph! There is no such paragraph! No! Although there are 4 paragraphs of translation (including traditional Chinese characters) here, the space may not be enough, but where is this? This is Nanjing! Is the Nanjing Tourism Bureau still afraid that your Japanese father will be unhappy? Shouldn't we seize every opportunity to let more foreigners see this history? Those Japanese right-wingers put books that distort history in hotel bookcases. Compare with what our tourism bureau is doing, I am ashamed~

Now let's talk about Zhonghua Gate itself. I strongly suggest starting the visit after 3:30 pm. The experience is very good. You can use 1 hour to carefully see the scenery outside. Even in winter, you don't have to worry about insufficient light. If you are alone, you can follow the team. There are free explanations. You can listen to the story of Shen Wansan and the treasure bowl, listen to the soldier cave which is warm in winter and cool in summer with a constant temperature of 14-22 degrees all year round, understand why the city gate is made into an arched doorway so that a larger and thicker city wall can be built and to avoid fire attacks, as well as the construction order of earth first and bricks later, etc., especially the various legends about Shen Wansan are the focus of the explanation.

After passing through three urn cities and corresponding sluice gates, we arrived at the southern gate of Zhonghua Gate, where the largest soldier cave is located, because this is the direction where the southern gate faces the enemy. On the gate tower, several soldier caves have been converted into exhibition halls. The one selling treasure pots is the most popular because the guide will definitely take you there. Although there is a little introduction, it is far less attractive than the origin of the city wall next to it, which is the military preparations of the Ming Dynasty. If you have time, you must sit down and watch a video record. You will discover astrology, military knowledge, metaphysics, etc. hidden in the cold city walls.

After watching the exhibition, it should be almost 2 hours. At this time, you can climb up the city wall and admire several imitation siege and defense weapons. You can see the light show of Da Baoen Temple in the southeast. When the lights of Da Baoen Temple are on, at 18:00 in the evening, the lamp posts of Zhonghua Gate also rise. After seeing the beautiful lights, walk slowly down the city tower from the horse paths on both sides. When you come to the main gate again, there is another fantasy colorful light show. At this time, the four city gates are connected together by the changing lights, which is quite interesting.

Tickets to Zhonghua Gate are 50 yuan on site and 40 yuan online (but you need to book 2 hours in advance and pick up the tickets on site). There will be free tour guides at intervals after entering Zhonghua Gate. Follow the guide's footsteps and walk through the steep, magnificent and solid city walls.

Due to limited physical strength, we did not walk along the wall after climbing it. Friends who are physically fit and interested can walk around. Or if there are many companions, you can rent an electric car on the top of the wall and go around the wall. It is labor-saving and you can enjoy the beautiful scenery. The view is wide and it is very suitable for watching the sunset.

Zhonghua Gate is the main gate of Nanjing City Wall and the largest existing city gate in China. This city gate has four arch gates and three Wengcheng. Zhonghua Gate was originally named Jubao Gate. It is said that it was named because a cornucopia was buried under the city wall. It was renamed Zhonghua Gate in the Republic of China, but I feel that Zhonghua Gate is more in line with the cultural atmosphere. At present, only the main building and the city gate are left in the castle. The tower was blown up by Japanese artillery fire during the Anti-Japanese War. But the remaining main body alone can imagine the magnificent scene at that time. There is also a hidden soldier cave in the building, where war reserve military supplies and ambushed soldiers can be hidden. This is something I have never seen in the city walls I have visited before. Standing on the tower, you can see the Da Baoen Temple outside the city. It is more interesting to watch the sunset here. The setting sun shines on the city wall with golden light. Standing on the city wall, touching the vicissitudes of the wall bricks, you can feel the migration of time and the changes of years, but also feel the unique charm of an ancient city.

Transportation: It is recommended to take the bus. The subway station is too far away. If there is a small yellow car, it is a good choice.

Cost: 35 yuan

Zhonghua Gate. According to legend, the Japanese invaders entered the city from here. I came here specially to commemorate history. The three gates are very distinctive.

Next, go to Zhonghua Gate.

This is a door with a story.

It was the south gate of the capital of the Ming Dynasty and is also the best-preserved city gate in Nanjing.

The urn city project is magnificent and its structure is complex. The city is divided into two floors, with four gates and 27 soldier-hiding caves, which can accommodate 3,000 soldiers. It is the largest urn city in my country.

The reason why Zhonghua Gate was named Jubao Gate by the court in the early Ming Dynasty was that it was built with funds from Shen Wansan, a wealthy businessman at the time, who had a feud with Ming Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang.

At that time, the foundation of the Ming Dynasty Yingtian court was still not very stable, and the Ming Taizu was very wary of the huge wealth of Shen Wansan's family.

He wanted Shen Wansan to fund the construction of the city gate, but a city gate is such an important military weapon that it cannot be built by a businessman. If he doesn't build it, he will be doomed.

Shen Wansan was too rich and dared to do any business. If the emperor didn't fear him, who else would he fear?

Not long after the city wall was built, Shen Wansan was also exiled.

The Zhonghuamen Wengcheng scenic spot is more convenient to take the bus than the subway. Take bus No. 2, No. 16, No. 49, No. 63, No. 202, No. 302, No. 701, No. 706, and get off at Zhonghuamen Castle Station. You can see the scenic spot when you look up. The ticket is 50 yuan. It will be cheaper to buy it online in advance. When I went there, I bought it online and it was 10 yuan cheaper. Opposite the ticket office is the online ticket service center, which is much less crowded than the ticket office. You can print the voucher by giving the staff the verification code, which is very convenient. Zhonghuamen Wengcheng has free explanations. Although you will be taken to shopping spots at the end, you will not be forced to consume. It is different from the tour guides of the tour group. When we bought souvenirs by ourselves later, we chatted with the boss, and he also told us that the tour guides have commissions, and the staff who explain the scenic spots are paid a fixed salary, but there is a job requirement to bring tourists in. The explanation we encountered at that time was very good. It was not rigid at all when talking about history. It was very humorous and made people feel very involved. When you encounter questions, they will also answer them patiently. When visiting cultural attractions, a good explanation will greatly enhance your experience. On the city wall, you can see a piece of Hui-style architecture. This was once a wealthy area where dignitaries lived. What a prosperous scene it was back then? Holding the wall, a few of us looked at the bustling pedestrians in Laomendong, posing and taking pictures, as if the noise under the city wall had nothing to do with us.

Formerly known as Jubao Gate, it is the largest existing city gate in China and the best-preserved and most complex fortress city wall in the world. The city gate is equipped with three city walls and four arch gates. Each city gate originally had double wooden doors and a jack gate that could be activated up and down. The entire city has a total of 27 soldier caves that can hide more than 3,000 soldiers. It is next to Laomendong, and the lights are bright at night, and there is an endless stream of people climbing the city.

The numerous ancient city walls are a major feature of Nanjing. The city walls and gates are connected, showing the charm of the ancient city. Among the ancient city walls, Zhonghua Gate is one of the best preserved urn cities in China, which is particularly unique. Standing on Zhonghua Gate, there are countless memories. Judging from the orientation of the Zhonghua Gate, it should be the most suitable to take pictures at 7 or 8 in the morning, but since ancient times, backlighting has produced great photos, and taking pictures against the light in the afternoon also has a unique style. (Luggage can be stored at the Zhonghua Gate ticket gate)
