Mudu Ancient Town

Mudu Ancient Town is known as the "No. 1 Town in Wuzhong". Its small bridges, flowing water, deep houses and ancient trees make it unique among all the ancient towns.
The Muguang River and other rivers in the town crisscross and form an ancient waterscape with long stone embankments. The old streets are crisscrossed and the ancient alleys are full of deep houses and courtyards.
There is a big stage in Hongyin Mountain House. Emperor Qianlong would come here to watch opera every time he went to the south of the Yangtze River. Twenty imperial edicts from the emperor are also displayed in the house.
There are many delicious foods here. I recommend Shijia Restaurant. The signature dish is the fish lung soup, which is made with fish liver and chicken soup. The fish liver is tender and the soup is extremely delicious.
The local handicrafts in Mudu include silk, double-sided embroidery, mahogany carvings, clay inkstones, calligraphy and painting, stone carvings, etc., which can be purchased as souvenirs.

Mudu Ancient Town is a good place for a one-day trip. In summer, the trees and the river at the entrance of Mudu are spraying water mist to cool down. When you first enter the ancient town, it feels like entering a fairyland. It is recommended to book online tickets 1 hour in advance, or book directly on the spot, but only 5 yuan can be reduced if you book on the spot. There are 4 scenic spots on the ticket. Except for Yan's Garden, the others are not very big. It is actually better to have a guide. You can learn a lot from following the guide in all the ancient towns or recreational facilities in Suzhou. However, technology is more advanced now. You can scan the code at the ticket pick-up place in the scenic area and there will be an electronic guide inside. You can also listen to it. It is quite detailed.

The characteristic of Mudu is that there are many bridges.

Yong'an Bridge in the Ming Dynasty, with groves hanging down.

Xijin Bridge in the Qing Dynasty: "Water surrounds the small market, and the stone bridge is across. The clear and spacious area is perfect for the bright moon. The autumn light fills the pavilions. Who can see the most affectionately from afar?"

The ancient town is not big, with convenient transportation and public transportation. There are not many tourists. If you need to visit individual courtyards, please buy tickets. There are no tourists in the Xiangxi'an ART area on the other side of the river. There is no ticket. It is a good place to take pictures.

By I wish to travel all over the mountains and rivers |

Every time I go out to play, I never catch the lotus flowers blooming.

Several scenic spots in Mudu are not as good as expected

The umami porridge tasted unexpectedly good.

The local owner of the shop is very hospitable

The authentic scenery of the old town is also unique.

Mudu Ancient Town is located in the southeast of Jiangsu Province and west of Suzhou Ancient City.

The commercial atmosphere is too strong. Both sides of the river are selling food and taking photos. It feels like walking in a snack street. The point is that there is nothing delicious, only local specialties...

Mudu is located in the west of Suzhou, on the shore of Taihu Lake, and is a famous ancient town in the south of the Yangtze River. It has beautiful scenery and abundant resources. It is surrounded by famous mountains in Wuzhong, such as Tianping, Lingyan, Shishan, and Qizi, so it is known as the "treasure bowl". Mudu is an ancient water town of the same age as Suzhou City. As a transportation hub connecting Suzhou City and the vast Taihu Lake, Mudu is a veritable gateway to Taihu Lake. Therefore, in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Mudu was the most prosperous commercial port in the west of Suzhou City. During the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Qianlong visited Mudu six times during his southern tour to the south of the Yangtze River. Among them, there is an imperial pier inscribed by Qianlong himself. Qianlong and his teacher Shen Deqian chanted poems and sang together, and his good friend Xu Shiyuan played tea and chess, leaving behind a series of popular legends.

Generally speaking, the features are average. It happened to rain a bit when I went there. There are not many new things. It's just an ancient town.

By Andy.Bohu.Tang |

Compared with traditional gardens, Mudu Ancient Town has less to see.

It's OK to eat here or something.

Mudu is a place where Emperor Qianlong stopped every time during his six trips to the south of the Yangtze River. How can you not go and explore it?

By Stop and Go |

No tickets are required to enter the ancient town. It is a typical Jiangnan water town. Compared with Zhouzhuang, Luzhi has fewer people. It is suitable for visiting on weekdays and weekends.

By babudolee |

The once flourishing ancient town now has only a few remnants left. The shops along the street sell the same souvenirs from national tourist attractions, and the air is filled with the smell of fried stinky tofu. Only the river and the dilapidated ancient bridge remind you of its flourishing past. The guy selling ginger candy on the street is working hard to make maltose.

By Bell |

The whole Mudu Old Street is full of commercial atmosphere, but I like to come here because the roads here are a bit congested, but parking is convenient, and Lingyan Mountain is opposite. Climb the mountain to see Suzhou from afar, and then sit in Mudu after coming down, which is quite pleasant.

Although Mudu is full of business, the teahouses and coffee shops are still very down-to-earth. There is a row of seats along the river. In summer, you can buy a cup of sour plum soup for 5 yuan and sit there for an entire afternoon. The town is quiet and leisurely, and passers-by often come and go.

In Mudu, this cafe is recommended. The interior is spacious, and half of the garden is separated to accommodate seats. You can drink a cup of Biluochun and read a book in the garden for the whole afternoon. There is also a cat that won't let anyone hold it.

As an ancient town lover, you must go to the ancient towns in Suzhou! There are many famous ancient towns in Suzhou. Mudu Ancient Town is relatively close to the city. You can get there by subway and bus. It is free to enter the ancient town, but several of the ancient gardens require tickets. You can buy a combined ticket. Feel the charm of Suzhou gardens in various large and small courtyards~ Many of the houses here are the former residences of ancient people. If you come to see the lotus pond in summer, it must be very shocking. But the dead branches and lotus leaves also have a unique flavor! The symmetrical beauty of Suzhou gardens will make you sigh once you move from one scene to another.

I came to Mudu with my husband's company for a team-building trip. We saw the filming locations of "Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace", Yan's Garden and Hongyin Mountain House. The scenery was pretty good and the overall experience exceeded my expectations.

It’s my first time to visit Mudu Ancient Town. The name is really nice~

By Savannah |

Walking around the ancient town, buying all kinds of delicious food and gadgets, taking photos, and enjoying the scenery are quite relaxing. The rocking boat in the river of Mudu Ancient Town costs 20 yuan per person. The rockers sing Suzhou folk songs while rocking. The small bridges, flowing water, and people's houses are very Jiangnan artistic conception, which feels more interesting than Suzhou city. Another feature of the ancient town is that you can see the shooting of ancient style art photos everywhere, from makeup, clothing, photography to post-Photoshop, the price is surprisingly low!

By Go your own way |

The ancient town is full of old streets and ancient alleys with deep courtyards. These ancient buildings are large and well-preserved. There are four most famous private residences in the ancient town, namely Yan's Garden, Hongyin Mountain House, Gusong Garden and Bangyan Mansion, each with its own characteristics. You don't need to buy tickets to Mudu Ancient Town, but you need to buy a combined ticket for 4 attractions in Mudu, and the ticket price is 78 yuan.

In fact, Mudu Ancient Town is not just a tourist attraction. As the saying goes, "Built by the water, beautiful because of the water, and prosperous because of the water", there are not only small bridges and flowing water, white walls and black tiles, but also scenes of human life such as washing clothes and cooking. Built by the river, Mudu Ancient Town has narrow streets with water lanes, wooden boats and water pavilions, each with its own charm, and each ancient bridge has its own characteristics. Wandering on the bridges, it feels like traveling back in time.

Like most ancient towns, it has cobblestone roads, the same crowded tourists, and the same tourist souvenir stalls as in other parts of the country... Haha

Today, Mudu Ancient Town has not escaped the fate of most ancient town scenic spots in China. To sum it up in the words of my friend, the so-called ancient town is a crowded stone road with two rows of fried stinky dried tofu on both sides...

By lanhaigege |

Mudu is mostly a place of traditional handicraft workshops. Compared with the fast food of big cities, the memory of traditional handicrafts makes people feel more beautiful and worth cherishing.

Mudu, a thousand-year-old town that is the same age as Suzhou, is as quiet and graceful as a girl from the south of the Yangtze River...

By Ou Ge |

Only one street and a few large houses have been preserved. You can visit them if you have time.

By Zhaoge Xuanzi goes traveling |

There is an interesting bridge inside, which sprays water mist every few minutes to create an atmosphere of misty Jiangnan.

At this moment, we truly experienced the misty Jiangnan area, strolling in the drizzle, feeling comfortable and leisurely.

Although I didn't get to play much because of the rain, it was still an experience. The ancient town under the heavy rain was actually quite special, of course, not considering the discomfort of having wet shoes.

Coming down from Lingyan Mountain is Mudu Ancient Town. The rise of this town was also due to the need of King Wu to build Lingyan Mountain. There is Xiangxi in the town, and there is also a Mudu Shantang Street that is many years older than Qili Shantang (it is said that Xiangxi was called Shantang in ancient times). The Shanda Garden in the town is very good, especially the Yan Family Garden is very praiseworthy, and Hongyin Shanfang is where Emperor Kangxi stayed during his southern tour. Usually there are not many people coming here, which is very suitable for leisure.

By Don't stir up a hornet's nest |

There are four courtyards that require tickets to visit. I didn't go in. I just walked around the so-called old street. There is nothing special about it. It is the most un-ancient town I have ever visited.

By Heisenberg |

After visiting Lingyan Mountain, I thought the ancient town was very close, so I went to take a look. I was very disappointed. It was just a street selling antique small commodities. There was probably only a small bridge and a stone pavilion that were old. All along the street were people selling things like fried stinky tofu. It was dirty and messy.

Mudu Ancient Town is known as "the most beautiful town in the south of the Yangtze River". It was a must-stay place for Emperor Qianlong during his six trips to the south of the Yangtze River. The green trees, flowers, small bridges and flowing water are beautiful. Among them, Yan's Garden and Hongyin Mountain House are worth seeing.

There are some handmade specialties in the ancient town, such as ginger candy, Suzhou's famous dried tofu, etc., as well as some petty-bourgeois shops and several private gardens as tourist attractions with entrance fees. Since it was a weekday, there were not many tourists in the ancient town. Maybe it was because people have seen too many attractions now, and they felt that the whole ancient town was just like that, with nothing to see.

By Brain disease water beast |

Mudu Ancient Town is located in the suburbs of Suzhou, about 30 minutes by car. The street outside Mudu Ancient Town is dirty and messy. Motor vehicles and tourists are mixed. There are no police and traffic coordinators to maintain traffic. There were a lot of tourists that day. There is also a scenic spot opposite the ancient town. So it is difficult to find a parking space. The parking spaces in Mudu Ancient Town were full, so we parked in a yard far away from the ancient town. I don’t know what unit it belongs to.

If you don't enter the scenic spots in the ancient town, you don't need to buy a ticket if you just walk around the town. I think the ticket price is 60 yuan.

In the ancient town, there seemed to be no staff on the street except for the staff collecting tickets at the scenic spots. At first, we were afraid that we would not be allowed to enter the scenic area with our little dog, but we saw a family with six puppies. They were holding and leading them like a dog kindergarten.

The ancient town is also a riverside tour, and all the scenic spots are along the river. There is a strong commercial atmosphere here. There are ancient costumes for rent, and they are all rented out outdoors along the coast. I didn't go into the scenic area, so I don't know how it is. But the ancient street really has no characteristics. There is no highlight. There is no charm of the ancient town.

We only walked halfway along the river, then walked through the alley to the main street, had lunch and left Mudu Ancient Town. The whole tour took about an hour.

This place, except for two bridges and two big ancient trees, is a commercial area and has no tourist atmosphere. There are no eye-catching signs of Mudu Ancient Town and parking instructions and other humanized prompts. We were deceived when we went there. We parked for half an hour and finally parked in the ancient street. We were fined by the police. We came here to consume and contribute to the people of Suzhou, but we did not get the proper service and were fined instead. Anyway, it is better not to go to this place!

I like Mudu very much. I only visited the street outside according to other reviews. It would be a pity not to go into those small gardens. Although small, they have everything. The pavilions are exquisite, there are few people, and it is very comfortable. I plan to go again this year. I left in a hurry last time.

Every ancient town has some special shops, and Mudu Ancient Town is no exception. I was born in the north, but I like water towns and Jiangnan. I like the misty apricot blossoms in Jiangnan, the warm stone bridges in Jiangnan, the bluestone roads polished by time, and the simplicity and naturalness of Jiangnan. It is not like a bustling city, but makes people feel the tranquility and casualness, like the tranquility of small bridges and flowing water, and like the black-sailed boats traveling in the water.

The pavilions and corridors dotted between the ponds and green trees are small, exquisite and quiet, with a typical Suzhou garden style that makes people linger. I came to this town by accident and wandered around for a whole morning. It was nice.

I was really disappointed. After I came out of Tianping Mountain, I wanted to find a place to eat. I looked around and found Mudu Ancient Town. I decided to come and have a look. I thought it was not far away. But it was actually quite far. I took a tricycle and spent 20 yuan.

I was shocked when I got here. This is an ancient town? Are you kidding me? I grew up in an ancient town and I don’t buy it. Even Lao Sun, who grew up in the Northeast, said, “Oh my god, there is a small commodity street, and then the houses are built, and everyone is told that this is an ancient town, and then they start making money.”

There are several ancient houses in this ancient town. Now they sell combined tickets and you can go in and visit them. But for someone like me who grew up in an ancient town, I know that they are all the same. Unless there is a guide, it's okay to listen. So I didn't have the pleasure to go in and see what's going on. The main reason is disappointment.

It is recommended that those who come down from Tianping Mountain should eat near Mudu Film and Television City instead of the ancient town. The ancient town basically sells costume photography, various cakes, pastries, etc., and of course there are coffee shops. There are not many formal restaurants in the central street of the ancient town, unless you go to the outside to find them yourself.

By AmySweety |

I grew up in an ancient town, and tears came to my eyes when I saw this "Mudu Ancient Town". This ancient town is just a small street that takes no more than 15 minutes to walk from front to back. There may be a few slightly famous gardens at most.

Mudu Ancient Town has a history of 2,500 years. The town is very small, but it has a very good geographical location. It is located in Wuzhong District, Suzhou City, surrounded by mountains and Taihu Lake. Three of the mountains correspond to a celebrity each. Tianping Mountain - Fan Zhongyan. Lingyan Mountain - Xi Shi. Qionglong Mountain - Sun Wu. Mudu also has four private gardens. Yan Family Garden. Hongyin Mountain House. Gusong Garden. Bangyan Mansion. In particular, Hongyin Mountain House has received Emperor Qianlong and a large number of entourages who came to the south of the Yangtze River six times. Although the surviving area is not large, it is very distinctive.

The commercialization is too serious. There are shops renting ancient costumes for taking photos on both sides of the street. It is really speechless. If you go deeper, you can still find some small shops worth stopping at, such as the bookstore I mentioned in my travel notes. Some corners are still very quiet, suitable for daydreaming.

Mudu South Street Old Covered Bridge

I saw the South Street Covered Bridge from the tourist sign, and with the spirit of not missing it if I passed by, I set out on a journey to find the South Street Covered Bridge.

Crossing the Xi'an Bridge is like crossing a watershed, separating the hustle and bustle from the deserted alleys, separating the bustling tourists from the empty alleys.

Mottled walls, old wooden windows, quiet and deserted alleys, only cicadas chirping in a monotonous and hoarse voice in the sultry afternoon. I walked a long way, but did not see a covered bridge that matched my imagination. The creaking sound of a wooden door caught my attention. I turned around and saw a local resident walking out of a small alley. I hurried over to ask for directions, but it turned out that I had already walked a long way. The enthusiastic resident took me all the way to the entrance of the covered bridge and waved goodbye. Figure 3 is the entrance. Oh my god, I thought this was just an ordinary alley.

Standing on the legendary covered bridge, besides the traces of age, there is more desolation and ruin. No one lives around, only the river flows slowly, and the cicadas never stop chirping...

Legend of the Covered Bridge: The Covered Bridge was originally named He Bridge and was built in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. It is not very old, but the story is much more lingering. It is said that there was a wealthy family named Feng in the local area. There was a young girl who had just grown up and was as beautiful as a lotus. The surrounding prominent families and wealthy families went to propose marriage, but the girl didn't like any of them. Instead, she fell in love with a fishmonger. The old man of the Feng family was probably a broad-minded person, so he agreed. After getting married and having a child, the fishmonger decided to go out and "make a name for himself before coming back." The girl then moved back to her parents' home and stood on the original stone bridge with her young child every day, waiting for her husband to return, looking forward to it, regardless of the wind and rain. The young carpenter of the Feng family admired and admired her, so he built a roof on the bridge... and the Covered Bridge was born.

This story is obviously not over yet, is it? Is the ending happy or sad? Miss Feng, can you come out? Come to this covered bridge again and tell me the story that happened later when I stand on the covered bridge...

If you don’t have time to go to Tongli, you can only come to Mudu to satisfy your craving. In fact, this is a residential area and the attractions here are very scattered.

As soon as we entered the scenic spot, a tricycle driver strongly recommended us to take a tour. In fact, their charges were very cheap. We had to ride for a long time, and they would accompany us to visit the scenic spots and let us take pictures. They would only introduce some specialties for us to buy. In fact, I think it’s okay to buy some pearl powder. Anyway, you can’t see the real thing when you buy it online, right?

The grandfather who accompanied us on the tour looked very sad. He said that he had been riding a bike for fifteen years. Business in Mudu is not doing well now. Yes, it is a small ancient town after all. He is willing to stay here. I guess it is because he has worked here for a lifetime and does not want to move. People are always lazy and inertial.

Ancient town, I didn't choose Tongli or Zhouzhuang, but chose Mudu

Take the subway and then the bus to get here. This place is still undeveloped, so there is not much commercialization.

It is better to say that it is a life rather than an ancient town. This is where the people of Mudu live.

Sitting by the river for a while and having a sip of tea is also a comfortable enjoyment.

There are many people taking photos in the ancient town, but some of them have to do their own makeup.

I went there a long time ago, but I didn't walk all the way. It's okay.

No entrance fee is charged, which is better than other ancient towns such as Zhouzhuang and Tongli. In fact, the layout and feeling are similar, and there are not many people. It is a good ancient town to visit in your spare time. The jujube paste cake is also delicious.

It was a good trip to East China during the five-day tour.

The places that Emperor Qianlong visited during his six trips to the south of the Yangtze River include Hongyin Mountain House, Yan Family Garden, and Bangyan Mansion, all of which are very good.

There are four scenic spots inside, which is a place that combines living and sightseeing.

It can be considered a small ancient town in the west of Suzhou. It is not a must-visit.

If you really have to go, you can go in the afternoon, because the sunlight just shines on the small bridge and flowing water, which is quite beautiful.

There were so many people and the place was only a small place. There was no need to go there specially. I read the reviews of the scenic spot before and it said that there were not many people and the commercial atmosphere was not strong. I thought I came to the wrong place. I don’t recommend it at all.

The ancient town is small and you can walk through the Ming and Qing Dynasty streets very quickly, but there are four gardens on the street that are worth visiting. My favorite are the small radishes and green beans here, which are delicious.

The history of Mudu Ancient Town is as long as that of Suzhou Ancient Town. The classical gardens Yan Family Garden, Hongyin Mountain House, Gusong Garden, and Bangyan Mansion, which are arranged from west to east along the main street Shantang Street, bring the characteristics of a "garden ancient town". Yan Family Garden (Xian Garden) in the Qing Dynasty is the largest in the ancient town. The nanmu hall Shangxian Hall, which has been built for more than 400 years, is enough to illustrate its "high-end". There is a big stage in Hongyin Mountain House. Emperor Qianlong came here to watch operas every time he went to the south of the Yangtze River. Twenty imperial edicts of the emperor are also displayed in the house. Xiaoyin Garden in Hongyin Mountain House is the former residence of Shen Shou, the "Embroidery Queen". In the Gusong Garden of the Qing Dynasty, the carvings in the building hall are very beautiful. There is a 500-year-old Podocarpus in the back garden. The Yao Jianping Embroidery Art Museum on the west side of the back garden is also worth seeing. Bangyan Mansion is famous for its exquisite brick carvings, wood carvings, and stone carvings.

It's so beautiful inside! There are many styles and I thought it was just an ancient street. There are different scenic spots inside, which will feast your eyes.

It is really best to travel to Suzhou in spring. It was drizzling at the time, and it felt like a scene on TV. However, it is best to go to the ancient town, and you don’t need a ticket, and you can also appreciate many local customs and ornaments.

It is known as "the first town in Wuzhong" and "the most beautiful town in the south of the Yangtze River". Mudu Ancient Town is an ancient water town of the Han nationality that is the same age as Suzhou City and has a history of more than 2,500 years. In August 2008, it was rated as a national AAAA scenic spot [1] and is also one of the thirteen scenic spots in the Taihu Lake Scenic Area.

The customs here are very pure and beautiful. It is a summer resort. We walked on the road, took a small boat, and slowly admired along the small river in the south, listening to the boat girl humming songs, and felt the cleanliness of the old ancient city of Mudu. Mudu Ancient Town, where Qianlong visited six times. It is really a major feature of the ancient town in the south of the Yangtze River. There are all kinds of old houses in it, and some houses where celebrities once lived feel more elegant than modern buildings. Lotus flowers, lotus leaves, corridors, bricks and tiles are all deeply rooted in the characteristics of ancient Jiangnan. On the way back, I bought some specialties on the way. Walking on the road, I felt that my heart became quiet. What a beautiful place.

When we went to Mudu Ancient Town, the parking lot of the visitor center was full of tourist buses and small cars, indicating that there were many tourists and it was very popular. When we walked from the entrance next to the cruise ship dock with big red lanterns hanging high, we walked onto Shantang Street with stone railings on both sides of the clear stream, and there was indeed a constant stream of people coming and going. The stone slabs were neatly lined with flower beds, big trees and gorgeous lamp posts, each of which was hung with a "Jiangnan Love" billboard. Not far away was a tall three-door stone pillar archway with upturned corners and flying eaves, but I couldn't understand the two big characters on it. Standing on the stone arch Xiangxi Bridge and leaning on the railing, I saw two clear streams flowing east and south, with willows on both sides of Xiangxi dancing in the wind, and the courtyards with deep carved beams and painted buildings, which contrasted with the calm clear stream and the red clothes of the boatmen who came and went from time to time, like a beautiful landscape painting. Not far from the ancient pavilion at the bridgehead is a small square moon gate, with a stone inscription of "Shantang Ancient Street" facing it, and "Wu Feng Song Yun" inside, which is quite nostalgic. Inside the moon gate is a bustling pedestrian street, where some people wear ancient costumes to take photos, some people choose various Suzhou embroidery, and some people sit in restaurants and teahouses. I have traveled with a group to Nanxun, Wuzhen, Xitang and other ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River. Because the unified action was rushed, the scenery of the water town was similar, and I was also a cursory visit without understanding it, leaving little impression. But I think if these ancient towns can be planned and designed, appropriately adjusted and renovated, and strengthened and rectified, like the Mudu Garden Ancient Town, so that they have their own characteristics, and the ticket prices can be appropriately reduced to attract more tourists, thereby boosting the street economy and increasing income, wouldn't it be better to maintain its vitality? Because the ancient town is the carrier of national traditional culture and a paradise for the people, it is our unshirkable responsibility from generation to generation to pass on the torch and never extinguish it.

Each ancient town has a different feel. Mudu's business is not very developed yet, so it is relatively quiet. The five scenic spots inside also have their own characteristics. I like places with few people.
