There are more than 100 houses of different sizes, distributed on both sides of the 100-meter-long central axis. Shen Hall was originally named Jingye Hall, and was renamed Songmao Hall in the late Qing Dynasty. It was built in the seventh year of Emperor Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1742) by Shen Benren, the son of Shen Wenyuan, the chief of the Zhouzhuang Town Shecang, and a descendant of the Jiangnan tycoon Shen Wansan. According to the "Zhouzhuang Town Chronicles", "Benren's name was Qian, and he was waiting to be the governor of the state. In his early years, he liked to hang out, and all his friends were bandits. When his father died, someone said: He would go bankrupt in three years. When Benren heard about it, he prepared a banquet and invited all the bandits to drink. He gave each of them money and told them: I have to support the business now, so I can't hang out with you! So he closed the door to visitors, worked hard to manage the family business, and revived the family business. On the south side of the original Daye Hall, he expanded Jingye Hall into a house, with a hundred rafters and a thousand acres of fertile land, and became a wealthy family in the town."

The plaque of Songmao Hall was written by Zhang Jian, the top scholar in Nantong.

The living room of Shen Wansan's house was decorated in a style that all the living rooms of wealthy families at that time would have, with a square window at the top. In this way, the ladies of the family could see through the window the boys who came to visit or pay a visit, and could interact with them if they were satisfied.

By the way, in that evil old society, the daughters of wealthy families were influenced by the mainstream values of society and tended to stay at home, and it was forced.

Shen Hall is a must-visit place in Zhouzhuang. It was built by the descendants of Shen Wansan during the Qianlong period. This house is large, with a quiet and exquisite layout, and many details are worth pondering. However, there are too many people here on weekdays, so it would be better to go there early in the morning or late in the evening.

Shen Hall, the former residence of Shen Wanshan, the richest man in Jiangnan during the Ming Dynasty, I guess he is about the same as Jack Ma. There is a small corridor inside that introduces the history of the Shen family's rise to wealth, that is, the experience of success, but I think it is meaningless. Success cannot be copied, but failure can be learned. You must go into Shen Hall, why? Because of the legend of the cornucopia, touching the gold ingot will increase your wealth, regardless of whether it is real or fake, at least the meaning is good. In front of Shen Hall is the Nanhu Mingyue

This is one of the representative houses in Zhouzhuang. Although it no longer has the scale and furnishings of its heyday, it is enough to shock us modern people. We can't imagine what this house looked like in its heyday. Here you must listen to the guide's story about the past and present of this ancient house, and know the story of the rise and fall of this family that we have seen and heard.

When talking about Shen Hall, we naturally have to talk about the famous Shen Wansan! To visit this kind of cultural landscape, it is recommended to hire a tour guide or take a tour group to explain. You can't see anything by yourself! You can make your own Qingtuan in the kitchen of Shen Hall. There are many souvenirs at the exit, and the golden ingots are dazzling!

Shen Hall was built by the descendants of Shen Wansan, a wealthy man in Jiangnan during the Ming Dynasty. It is a very distinctive courtyard in Jiangnan during the Qing Dynasty. This location is said to be the best place to take photos in Shen Hall, where "the sedan chair enters from the door and the boat passes by the house".

I visited the [Shen Hall], which was so rich that they even sold "gold ingots" inside. Although the courtyard is not big, the design is exquisite and grand, and the hall is spacious and beautiful. If you see many courtyards in the Jiangnan area, you will think that the layout is similar, but if you observe carefully, you will find that the styles are very different.

It is the home of Shen Wansan, a wealthy man in Jiangnan. It is beautiful, and the roof beams are decorated with gold. It is really different to follow other people's tours and listen to historical explanations. At least I know the explanation of the chairs and the wife-watching window, hahahaha.

By the way, as a tourist attraction, Shen Hall has a nice restroom, hahaha

The houses of wealthy families like Shen Ting are extremely wealthy, and their mansions are representative works of the entire Jiangnan architecture. There were many people during the Mid-Autumn Festival, and many details could not be seen clearly. Some tourists crossed the railings and sat on the tables and chairs to take pictures, which was very uncivilized. There were many staff members to guide and instruct, and you can ask at any time if you don't understand.

Going north along Nanshi Street past the fish market, you will arrive at Shen Ting, which is probably one of the most fully equipped residential buildings in Jiangnan.

Shen Hall, also known as Jingye Hall, was built by Shen Benren, a descendant of Shen Wansan, in the seventh year of Emperor Qianlong's reign. The architectural pattern can be summarized as "seven entrances and five gatehouses":

The first entrance is the water wharf of Shen Hall, also known as the "water gate wall";

The second entrance is the wall gate tower, also known as the "dry gate wall", which is the real entrance;

The third hall is the teahouse, where boatmen and sedan chair bearers rest;

The fourth entrance is the main hall, Songmao Hall, where the host formally receives guests. The plaque hanging on it was written by Zhang Jian, the top scholar in the late Qing Dynasty. The beams above the hall are carved with "Su Bang"; the "Hui Bang" brick-carved gatehouse in front of the hall is the largest in Shen Hall, with "Ji Hou Liu Guang" engraved on it, but unfortunately the entire brick carving is destroyed; the two sides of the roof are "Shao Bang" firewalls; therefore, architects commented that there are three different architectural styles here;

The fifth entrance is the lobby building, which is where you enter the inner hall.

The sixth entrance is the small hall, and going upstairs you can enter the Zoumalou of Shen Hall. In a bedroom on Zoumalou, there is a Qiangong bed, which is said to be engraved with stories of the founding heroes of the Tang Dynasty. However, after a long time of searching, I could only recognize the story of Kong Ming watching fish, and I didn't recognize the shadow of Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong at all.

The seventh entrance is the dining room, which is adjacent to the kitchen.

Compared with the simple and elegant Zhang Hall, the layout here is more grand, with Songmao Hall and the kitchen being the highlights.

The ancient water town of Zhouzhuang still retains several Ming Dynasty residences with ancient style, among which the most eye-catching one is Zhang Ting.

Zhangting is located between Shuangqiao and Shenting on Beishi Street in Zhouzhuang, facing east and west. Zhangting is one of the most important residential buildings in the Ming Dynasty in my country, and it is well preserved. It is worth a visit to see the ancient architecture and history of the Ming Dynasty. The overall feeling Zhangting gave me is simple and elegant.

Shen Hall was built by the descendants of Shen Wansan. It has seven entrances and five gatehouses. The main hall alone is more than 170 square meters. The architectural layout is quite like that of a wealthy family. Many people are familiar with the name Shen Wansan, but they are also unfamiliar with it. They come here to visit and mostly want to learn about the life of this legendary figure. During holidays, there will be tour groups organized from all over the country. Listening to the guide's explanation will make the whole tour of Shen Hall more interesting. The Wansan Family Banquet and Wansan Money House in Shen Hall are quite unique.

By Dry Skiing |

The entrance of Shen Hall is extremely inconspicuous and easy to miss, which shows that Shen Wansan is a low-key person. The three walls of the hall are all copper engravings telling the story of Shen Wansan's experience. He went to Beijing to sell fans and lost money. On the way, he met a little monk, who later became the emperor Zhu Yuanzhang. Shen Wansan accumulated experience in business, took the Maritime Silk Road, and engaged in international trade. He made a lot of money and was rich enough to rival a country. At the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, the rebel army was surging in various places. The Jiangsu and Zhejiang areas were Zhang Shicheng's territory. The end of currying favor with Zhang Shicheng was Zhu Yuanzhang's crazy revenge. . . . . . . After visiting Shen Wansan's kitchen, his family's meals were not luxurious.

Shen Hall is not as attractive as Zhang Hall, and is mainly characterized by Shen Wansan. There is a bronze statue of Shen Wansan and a bronze mural with Shen Wansan as the theme in the house. The cornucopia on the mural has been touched by tourists until it is shiny.

I can tell you a story about Shen Wansan.

The Shen Ting in Zhouzhuang was built by later generations. His former residence is a long way outside Zhouzhuang, which is also included in the ticket price. All the nearby properties are sold out. He probably wanted to absorb the spiritual energy of the Feng Shui treasure land~ Later he moved to Nanjing, and something happened.

Shen Wansan shipped a lot of things out and brought a lot back with him. He made a lot of money and became rich enough to rival a country. Unfortunately, he was too high-profile and was dealt with by Zhu Yuanzhang.

There are many things to pay attention to in Shen's Hall. For example, the beams in the hall where men can enter are very high, while those for women are flat, and there is a hierarchy between men and women. There are two tables in the women's hall, the square table, which means: there is no order without rules, and the table for covering one's feet, so that women can cover their feet. Shen Wansan's five daughters did not bind their feet because they were rich. It is said that there is a small window next to them for them to choose their husbands. Wow, what rich people. The food in the picture below is the decoration of Shen's Hall. We took pictures on purpose. We will order dishes like this later!

When you come to Zhouzhuang, you must visit "Shen Hall". Shen Hall is the largest residential building in Zhouzhuang. It was built in the seventh year of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty (1742) by Shen Benren, a descendant of Shen Wansan, the "richest family in Jiangnan".

Shen Hall faces west and faces the river. It has seven entrances and five gatehouses. This house combines the craftsmanship of Suzhou and Huizhou craftsmen. It is unique and should not be missed.

The main hall, "Songmao Hall", is a two-slope hard-mountain style, with corridors in front and back, and a lattice corridor. The wooden beams in the hall are thick and all have Ming-style circular patterns. The beams and columns are thick and engraved with pythons, dragons, unicorns, flying cranes, and dancing phoenixes. The railings and windows are more delicately made, belonging to the Hui style. The black characters on the white background on the central hall are handwritten by Zhang Chun, the top scholar in the late Qing Dynasty. The furniture is in the late Qing style, with a thick style.

Many tourists throw coins to pray for wealth.

There is really no question about whether the Temple of the Gods in Zhouzhuang is worth visiting. After all, there are too many people here, and most of them come for the "treasure bowl". It is said that "the first touch will bring you wealth, the second touch will bring you official luck, and the third touch will bring you romantic luck". It is considered a good start for yourself, eating "Wan San Pig's Pig's Feet" symbolizes "promotion". However, there are too many people here, so I suggest you leave after touching the treasure bowl, because there is nothing else to see except this lucky start. (Tip: the treasure bowl is on the wall, you can find it yourself)

A wealthy family, a local tyrant~

Shen's House is the former residence of Mr. Shen Bohan, an educator in Luzhi Town, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. It was built in 1873 and has a history of 130 years. The original building area was 3,500 square meters, and only the western part of 720 square meters is now open to tourists. The Shen family owned numerous industries and wealth. Since the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, the saying "Shen owns half of the town" has been widely circulated.

Do you know what the groove under the stove in Figure 2 is used for?

The wealthy family has no worries about food and clothing, so naturally they have more kindness and love. The groove is a place for kittens to shelter and keep warm in winter, and can also be used to dry wet shoes on rainy days.

It is a private residence built by the descendants of Shen Wansan, the richest man in the Ming Dynasty. When you come here, you will really know what a rich person is. Back then, Shen Wansan was rich enough to rival a country. It is said that he had a cornucopia in his hand, and his money was inexhaustible. Even Zhu Yuanzhang was jealous. Later, he said that he would reward the three armies for the emperor. This was too much, so Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, could not tolerate him. He thought of ways to make things difficult for him and finally got him down. Think about his Wansan hoof, which even the emperor said was good after tasting it. Of course, ordinary people can't afford it. It's still not cheap now, and one costs dozens of yuan. You can still try it when you come to Shen Hall! The hall is indeed luxurious, and the layout inside is also very delicate. It's worth a look!

Enter the "Shen Hall", the famous residence of Shen Wansan in Zhouzhuang

The lintel of Shen's house is not as grand as people imagine.

We almost made it through.

But the structure and layout of the mansion, plus the legendary story of Shen Wansan

The explanation that still makes people feel its exquisiteness and charm says that this small window was opened by the young ladies of wealthy families in the past to choose their husbands. The young ladies could see the appearance of the men who came to propose marriage here. If they didn't like the man, they would close the window, and if they liked the man, they would open the window.

What’s interesting is that just after the tour guide finished speaking, a handsome guy stuck his head out. We laughed out loud and the handsome guy looked innocent.

By the way, there is an additional charge of 10 yuan per person to go up to Zoumalou

In this old house, you can feel the glory of Shen Wansan. In addition to the overall room open for display, there is also a relief on the wall that details the history of Shen Wansan. There are many things in Zhouzhuang named after Shen Wansan, which shows how influential he was. There are large sculptures of ingots and copper coins, which you can touch, but don't offer them through the hole of the copper coin, which means don't fall into the money hole.

Both the guide and my friends told me that when I came to Zhouzhuang, I had to eat Wansan pig's trotters, and the pork elbow shops all over the street proved this point. I found Songhelou, which was formerly Shenting Restaurant, and it is said that Wansan pig's trotters are the most famous.

Before the waiter cut the pork elbow for me, he kindly asked me to take a photo first. It tasted good, but it really made me sick. This was my dinner alone!

As the name suggests, it is where Shen Wansan lived at that time. To describe Shen Ting in three words, it is "high-end". From the entrance to the back yard, there are a total of "seven entrances" (that is, there are seven patios). From the place where the sedan chair is placed at the entrance to the dining room and kitchen at the back, they are all very unique, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the daily life of a wealthy family in the Ming Dynasty.

As a Jiangnan native, I admire the skilled craftsmen of Jiangnan. Their unique carving art shows the style of the wealthy families in Jiangnan.

When traveling to Zhouzhuang, Shen Hall is a must-see, because this is the hometown of Shen Wansan, who was rich enough to rival a country...
