Huishan Ancient Town

Featuring a densely distributed cluster of ancient ancestral halls, it is considered the only existing project in Wuxi that is eligible for application for World Cultural Heritage status.
The ancestral halls are mainly concentrated along the Longtou River and Zhi Street. Among them, the Yang Oufang Temple is quite special, incorporating Western architectural style.
The delicacies in the ancient town are also not to be missed. There is often a long queue for Huishan tofu pudding, and there is also Yiqinyuan steamed dumplings that have been featured in A Bite of China.
It combines the essence of humanities and the beauty of mountains and rivers. For thousands of years, it has been the spiritual home and travel destination of local people.

The ancient town is the passage in and out of the scenic area. There are businesses on both sides, and some courtyards are ancestral halls. It's okay to just walk around without paying tickets, but it doesn't seem necessary to go there specially. The ticket for Huishan Scenic Area is 70 yuan, and it's 60 yuan one day in advance on the Internet. We had to buy 70 yuan on the day we went. In addition, if you have enough time, you can climb the mountain, or take the cable car, walk up and down the scenic area. The pictures are all inside the scenic area.

This was Yutong’s second visit to Wuxi. The previous time I went to Xihui Park, the ancient town had not been repaired yet... Before, there was a small path through which Huishan Temple was hidden. After the repair, there were obviously more things to eat and play... And all the attractions hidden in it were found, such as the tomb of Qin Shaoyou... Well, although I don’t like Qin Guan, a dissolute, promiscuous and cowardly man... But the Huaihai Temple is not bad... The Hundred Family Surnames Stele... The Yang Family, one of the four major families in Wuxi... Huishan Temple and the palace of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, etc.... There are also many teahouses... It feels especially suitable for spending an afternoon strolling here.

Huishan Ancient Town was built during the Southern and Northern Dynasties. Although it covers an area of only one square kilometer, it has more than one hundred ancestral halls, as well as many historical sites such as temples, gardens, and bookstores.

A tributary of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal flows through Huishan Ancient Town, bringing prosperity and bustle to the place. During the Qing Dynasty, Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong traveled to the south of the Yangtze River and came to Huishan via this tributary. The most representative things in Huishan Ancient Town are the Second Spring in the World and the Tang and Song Dynasty Stone Sutra Pillars in the town. The spring water, which was dug during the Dali period of the Tang Dynasty, is sweet and suitable for making tea. It was evaluated as "the second best in the world" by the tea saint Lu Yu, hence the name Second Spring in the World. For more than a thousand years, the title of the First Spring in the World has always been controversial, but the Second Spring in the World is the only one that no one questions. Just like the gentle and elegant people of Wuxi, they are quiet but have their own voice.

There is Huishan Temple in Huishan Ancient Town, and next to it is Jichangyuan Chaofang. It was a must-visit place for Emperor Qianlong when he went to the south of the Yangtze River. This time when I went there, I fully understood why Emperor Qianlong liked to go to the south of the Yangtze River so much. I could really feel the wealth and prosperity of the world.

These are all buildings left behind by wealthy families of the past, which have been converted into various teahouses and other shops.

The kittens in the ancient town are all fat and very clean.

The stage on the street gives us an idea of how prosperous it was back then...

I have always wanted to visit ancient towns on this trip, but Wuzhen and Zhouzhuang are a bit crowded.

There is Huishan Ancient Town not far from the city of Wuxi. Currently, the ancient town does not charge admission. It is said that the admission fee was charged for a while before and scared away all the tourists. It has been raining all the time, but I didn't expect there were so many people. The most distinctive feature of the ancient town is that it has many ancestral halls of various surnames, which are places for worshipping and offering sacrifices to the ancestors of their surnames. The buildings are also very well preserved, and the ancient charm is still there. If you don't climb Huishan and Jichang Garden, more than an hour is enough.

By Little ears-ki |

There are few tourists in the ancient town, the air is quiet and peaceful, the sun shines warmly, and the weather is neither cold nor hot.

The environment here is quiet, clean and open. It has a tranquility that is not found in the city, but also without the crowds and noise of Xitang. Tourists stroll here in groups of three or two.

This place is not as prosperous as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, nor as beautiful and elegant as Suzhou and Hangzhou, but against the backdrop of the mountains and rivers, it appears particularly quaint and peaceful.

I like the scenery of this ancient city more and more. I like its peeling walls, the dead tiles on the eaves and the wind-eroded stones. I like the sense of vicissitudes that history has left me.

It is more simple and rustic than Jiufen in Taiwan, with blue brick eaves rising layer by layer, implying rising step by step.

This is a very suitable place for one to walk around, stop and explore slowly, wander among the green bricks and tiles, green waters and green mountains, and escape into the winter scenery.

It is winter, but the ancient town is still warm and breezy. The leaves have turned yellow but have not fallen, hanging on the branches, creating the appearance of late autumn. They form the same tone as the warm yellow wall gate not far away, setting off each other and outlining a vivid picture of the ancient village.

Stepping on this land is like opening a century-old book, and the ancient charm comes uninvited.

There are not many people in the ancient town, probably because it is a weekday, and it is not very commercialized. There are not many shops here, and even fewer snacks. I met a man selling stinky tofu on the roadside. It costs 10 yuan per portion. Although it is not stinky, it is super fragrant.

Huishan Ancient Town. There are many historical sites here, and it is known as an open-air historical museum. Qianlong once praised it for its elegance and tranquility. The Second Spring in the World, Jichang Garden and other famous places are well-known. Every inch of brick and stone, every breeze here is wrapped in the ancient charm, and it is an excellent place to appreciate the culture of Jiangnan Wu.

Huishan Ancient Town was a gathering place for high-ranking officials in Wuxi in ancient times. Since it is called an ancient town, it is naturally the kind of model with crisscrossing stone roads and antique-style shops. If there is anything special, it is the celebrity ancestral halls that can be found everywhere. These ancestral halls are not actually commemorating people who have lived in Wuxi. Instead, they are figures who have been prosperous in a certain dynasty. They have appeared in historical documents. After N years, their Nth generation descendants made some money in Wuxi, so they built an ancestral hall in Huishan area, claiming that my ancestors were such awesome people, so I am also awesome. Facing the sages in the ancestral hall, looking at them one by one, I really feel that I am shallow and ignorant. Except for Fan Wenzhenggong, I have never heard of others. As for the descendants of these descendants who built the ancestral halls, whether they are real descendants or just relatives with a surname, I don’t know. I don’t know if the ancient genealogy is really as perfect as the legend.

Part of Huishan Ancient Town is charged. The combined ticket for Xihui Park, Clay Figurine Museum and Intangible Heritage Museum is about 70 yuan, but I didn't spend the money. I checked the introduction online. There is Jichang Garden, a famous Suzhou garden architecture in the Qing Dynasty, poems left by Kangxi and Qianlong who visited it many times, the Second Spring under Heaven named by the tea saint Lu Yu, and Abing's tomb. As for Abing's tomb, I checked it online. In 1983, Wuxi built Xihui Park and repaired the Second Spring under Heaven. Then Abing's original tomb was moved from several kilometers away to the side of the Second Spring under Heaven. The new tomb was built to 742 square meters, which is quite beautiful. According to the official statement, burying Abing next to the Second Spring under Heaven is a tribute to this top folk musician. But from another perspective, can it be expressed as Abing was poor during his lifetime, and after his death, his grave had to be dug up because of the development of local tourism?

"Huishan Ancient Town" consists of four parts, namely the cultural relics and historic sites area, the Xihui scenic spot area, the historical and cultural blocks and the mountain forest protection area. The Xihui scenic spot is Huishan Park, and the mountain forest protection area is Huishan National Forest Park. Huishan Ancient Town is unique in that the most concentrated ancestral halls in China are distributed throughout the scenic area, preserving more than 100 ancient ancestral halls and ruins, spanning about 1,200 years from the Tang Dynasty to the Republic of China, covering a complete series of 22 types of ancestral halls in ten categories, including 70 sacrificial figures with different surnames. It is a good place for treasure hunting for those who like to visit ancient places. The historical and cultural blocks are all imitations of Ming and Qing buildings, some of which are relics of the old times. The entire block is surrounded by Xiuzhang Street, Qinyuan Street and the upper and lower rivers on both sides of the Temple Pond Jing River. It is a typical Jiangnan town. In the cultural relics and historic sites area, there are Jichang Garden, Huishan Spring (the second spring in the world), Huishan Temple, Imperial Monument Pavilion, Jinlian Bridge and ancestral halls, spanning thousands of years of history.

It is the only neighborhood in Wuxi where the style of old neighborhoods is well preserved.

How can 20 pictures be enough? Even 50 pictures are not enough! Compared with other ancient towns, Huishan Ancient Town has its own characteristics. It is not only about the small bridges and flowing water, but also about the many ancestral halls and ancient buildings. It is simply a museum of ancient buildings. In summer, there is a comfortable and cool feeling when you walk in. It should not only be because of the good vegetation, but also because of the geographical location (at the foot of Xishan Mountain) and the reasonable planning of each building and the good Feng Shui design, which all help the ancient town to escape the summer heat.

The weather was bleak and windy. It was basically an ancestral hall + ancient street, with small bridges and flowing water. For a free ticket, it was okay to take photos. There are few people on the small road in the ancient town. There is a river behind it, and there are leisure areas on both sides with tables, chairs and tea. Many people sit there to rest.

This place has a long history that is worth recalling, and the mottled pink walls and black tiles are also intriguing.

Wuxi is a place of outstanding people and beautiful scenery, and Huishan Ancient Town is a good example. Nowadays, there are many ancient towns developed in Jiangnan, but most of them have too strong a commercial atmosphere. Although there are various restaurants and local souvenirs such as Huishan clay figurines, there are also many cultural relics, such as Fan Zhongyan's ancestral hall and the private residence of Qin Guan's descendants, which have a long history and are worth recalling. Those mottled white walls and black tiles are also very interesting. In short, you can harvest both material and spiritual gains.

There are many ancestral halls in the area, the most famous of which is Fan Zhongyan's. Like other places, it is quite commercialized, but the scenery is still good. After all, it is at the foot of Huishan Mountain and directly borders the Xihui Scenic Area. You can buy a combined ticket to Yuantouzhu. The China Clay Figurine Museum is worth a visit.

It is quaint, the service attitude of the scenic area staff is average, the ticket price is not worth that much and the cost performance is not high.

By Sun Wenliang |

The atmosphere of the ancient town is ok. Most of the people there drink tea. The most serious complaint is that when you order a dish at this restaurant, you can't pay with Alipay or WeChat. The attitude is very bad. They think they are locals and speak very viciously. I will never eat at this restaurant again.

By anokiguo |

To be honest, it's too new, with small bridges and flowing water. People from the north may think it's nice, but people from Jiangsu and Zhejiang think it's very ordinary. The snack street inside is only ten meters long, with very few things, but fortunately there is no entrance fee.

This time I went to Wuxi and originally planned to visit Yuantouzhu and Liyuan, but these two places were smaller than expected. After visiting, I still had time, and the rain had stopped, so I decided to go to Huishan Ancient Town. Because it was a weekday, there were not many people, and it was quiet and comfortable. However, I only visited free attractions. I dragged my suitcase and strolled slowly in the ancient town. It was so quiet that the sound of the suitcase wheels dragging on the bluestone slabs was particularly harsh~

I don't know if it's because I went there on Sunday. There were a lot of people, and I felt that the ancient town was noisy. It's not as quiet and comfortable as many people say. It should be less commercialized than Fenghuang Ancient Town and Wuzhen, but it's not comfortable with too many people! There is a good noodle restaurant in the town. It has the charm of a small Jiangnan noodle restaurant. The service staff is also very good. The recommended things are also delicious and inexpensive!

There is no entrance fee to Huishan Ancient Town, but there is a parking lot. Strolling in Huishan Ancient Town, you will see small bridges, flowing water, and houses. The blue sky and white clouds are reflected on the small bridges. The scenery is very beautiful. There are various open-air teahouses on both sides of the bridge. People are leisurely sipping tea and chatting in groups of three or two. It is a peaceful scene.

Most of the scenic spots are free, except for the Clay Figurine Museum and Huishan Temple, which require tickets. Once you enter the ancient town, it feels like you have entered another world, just like the gardens in the south of the Yangtze River. There are many entrances, and it seems that there is only one small entrance, but there is a different world inside. The biggest feature of Huishan Ancient Town is the ancestral hall, which is the largest gathering place of ancestral halls and is known as the ancestral hall museum.

By China-TravelNote users |

Huishan Ancient Town does not charge admission, but you need to go to other scenic spots. The ancient town is not very commercial, and the appearance of the houses basically maintains the original appearance. Especially in the street with the memorial archway, there is a small river in the middle, where it is very pleasant to stop and drink tea. This place is surrounded by mountains and rivers. In the past, people who lived here were very rich and noble.

I've always heard people say that Huishan has a heavy commercial atmosphere and is not as good as Dangkou. Haha, I went to both and found that you really can't just listen to what you say online. First of all, Dangkou charges a fee, while Huishan is free (the attractions in Huishan charge a fee, but it's worth it just to visit the ancient town, the scenery is great). Secondly, Dangkou is very small and has a desolate feeling. It's hard to find something to drink when you're thirsty. There's nothing else to see except the houses, unlike Huishan, which is green and has a spring breeze and the green south bank of the river. I personally still like Huishan, and I like quietness. If you want to relax and meditate alone, you can go to Dangkou.

No tickets are required for the ancient town. Turn left at the first intersection and you can see the ancient ancestral halls and tall camphor trees on both sides, with a stream in the middle, a typical Jiangnan ancient town. The deserted streets are completely different from the bustling commercial atmosphere on weekdays. I didn’t have high expectations for the ancient town because I felt that most of it had been eroded by commercial activities, but Huishan’s simplicity really surprised me.

The ancient town has retained its most simple ancient style without excessive renovation. The dilapidated tiles and the towering ancient trees complement each other beautifully. Many forgotten corners are still elegant, giving people the illusion of returning to ancient times.

There are no out-of-place big billboards, no air conditioners or electrical wires. Overall, this ancient town gives people a sense of tranquility. No wonder Emperor Qianlong visited Huishan every time he went to the south of the Yangtze River six times in his life, and even wrote "Only Huishan is quiet and peaceful."

An ancient town with unique characteristics and ancient charm. It is much less commercialized than the Confucius Temple in Nanjing. As a Nanjing native, I feel ashamed of the garden art of Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou. I didn't see the legendary Internet celebrity cats, but there are many cute cats in Huishan Temple. Most of them are lazy, either enjoying the cool under the temple or basking in the sun by the trees. They are not afraid of people, but if they are annoyed, they will reluctantly stand up and move to another position to continue lying down to bask in the sun with their furry big belly, which is very cute.

Huishan Ancient Town has a long history and is located at the foot of Huilu. The Longtou River in the town is connected to the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal through the Baoshan Bridge. There are many ancestral halls in the ancient town, which is also the best in the country. The environment around the ancient town is beautiful, with clear water and beautiful mountains. The ancient town is closely connected with Huishan Temple, Jichang Garden, the Second Spring in the World, the site of Yugong Valley and other places of interest. It has excellent humanities, history and beautiful landscapes. As the ancient town ages, after years of construction, various facilities have been quite complete. It is a good place for leisure sightseeing and visiting ancient sites in Wuxi. There are all kinds of food, snacks, tea tasting, etc., which can be freely chosen by tourists with different hobbies. You will definitely not be disappointed if you go there.

I have been to many ancient towns, each with its own characteristics. Going to the Jiangnan ancient town on a snowy day is special, especially the heaviest snowfall since 2008, which makes the ancient town as beautiful as a fairyland. It seems that you have to see the right scenery at the right time. The ancient town is in Wuxi City, and there are many buses to take. I live next to Yaohan on Zhongshan Road. It only takes 4 stops to take bus No. 79, and the station is downstairs from Yaohan, which is very convenient. If you go there on ordinary days, it is just a Jiangnan town. After being covered with snow, the original white walls and black tiles have become white walls and white tiles, which has a unique charm. It makes people linger.

We came here in the early winter when it was drizzling. The weather was quite uncomfortable for taking photos and playing. Of course, the good thing was that there were very few tourists. It was precisely because of the bad weather that the scenery of the ancient town brought us an unexpected visual impact. It may be that the ancient town is most charming at this time. The red leaves are brilliant, the yellow leaves are dancing, and many towers can be seen in the mist and rain...

By Rika Rain |

There are not many people in winter.

But this ancient town is really quaint and ancient, and most importantly, there are many celebrity ancestral halls, from which you can learn a lot.

You don't need to hire a tour guide, you can just hire a mobile phone tour guide. Every step you take, the mobile phone software will automatically explain. I used "Sanmao Tour" today, and the explanation fee is 8 yuan. It's quite cost-effective. And you can listen to it repeatedly, and you can watch it and learn and record it at the same time.

If you don't go to Xishan Park, there is no need to buy tickets. The tickets are mostly for the ancestral halls, and there is nothing to see inside. If you want to see the Clay Figurine Museum, you can buy a separate ticket for 30 yuan, and it is not big and you can finish the tour in less than half an hour. You are not allowed to take pictures. When I went there, there was no one inside, and I had the whole place to myself... However, the toilets in the ancient town are quite clean and there is no peculiar smell. The commercial atmosphere is too strong, and there is no feeling of an ancient town... I heard that the current ancient town is a replica of the old one, but the buildings are obviously very historical... I can't figure it out. Anyway, if you don't go to Xishan Park, 3 hours is enough to slowly walk around the ancient town.

It is right next to Xihui Park. Compared with other ancient water towns in Jiangnan, it cannot be said to have any absolute characteristics. Some ancient architectural landscapes, if you just came out of Xihui Park, you will not feel anything special. But the good thing is that this place is often overlooked, so there are few people and it is very quiet. There are also many independent small celebrity residences in it, and it is close to the canal tributaries, which is really good. If you go to Xihui Park and have enough time, you must go for a walk.

It is worth a visit. It is a large ancient town and very beautiful. There are residential buildings of various styles. It is surrounded by mountains and rivers and is free. But there are a lot of people.

The rain had just stopped when we arrived at the ancient town. There were few people and the ancient street was very quiet and peaceful. It was not the peak tourist season and many shops were closed. It was really quaint. I suggest you go to Xihui Park first, and then go out of the north gate to Huishan Ancient Town.

There are not many people, the ancient town is very quiet, and there are many archways, each with its own characteristics.

Huishan Ancient Town is still very distinctive, with many distinctive buildings and many shops selling local specialty products, such as Wuxi Huishan clay figurines, various cakes, wontons, noodles, etc. There is also an endless stream of people going to Huishan Park for morning exercises in the morning.

Huishan Ancient Town is located in the west of Wuxi City, beside Xishan and Huishan (Xihui Park), 2.5 kilometers from the city center, and to the north is the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. It retains the style of Wuxi's old neighborhoods, among which the Huishan Ancient Town ancestral halls (from the Ming Dynasty to the Republic of China, a time span of about 500 years, with more than 60 sites) are national cultural relics. It is a 3A scenic spot, and now it is free to visit (swipe your ID card to enter). There are Wuxi Clay Figurines, Yugong Valley, Erquan Academy Hall and other attractions. Drinking tea and chatting by the river has become a major feature.

[Refuse to be a otaku 9] The most surprising thing in the trip to Wuxi was Huishan Ancient Town. I went there on a weekday, so there were fewer tourists and the environment was very quiet. The shops have more local characteristics, and you can eat local specialties such as plum blossom cakes, magnolia cakes, tofu pudding, steamed dumplings, Huishan oil pastry, etc. It is the best place to experience local snacks~ It's really good and the price is reasonable. The most distinctive features of Huishan Ancient Town are the ancestral hall culture and clay figurine culture, as well as the riverside tea tasting street and the second spring in the world, which are all worth experiencing. In addition, the recommended route is to enter from the northeast gate, play along Huishan Straight Street, enter Huishan Heng Street, and exit from the northwest gate~ The most recommended place in Wuxi! ! Of course, you don’t have to go there at night. There are no street lights and the shops are almost closed. It is a unique experience~

Huishan Free Attractions: Huishan Ancient Town

There are a lot of people on weekends and it is difficult to find a parking space.

There are many snacks in the ancient town, and there is a special snack street. The tofu pudding is good and I will come to try it.

Walk around and take pictures. When you are tired, you can sit down and drink tea. It is quite relaxing.

The long alleys are lined with green stone pavements, and the exquisite and small Jiangnan gardens are worth a visit.

There are several ancient towns in Wuxi, Huishan Ancient Town is one of the more famous ones. In addition, there are Dangkou Ancient Town, Rongxiang Ancient Town, Xuntang Ancient Town, etc. Huishan Ancient Town has preserved many ancestral halls and ancient monuments, with a profound historical heritage, reflecting the ancient Chinese clan culture and ancestral hall culture. Moreover, the ancient town and Xihui Park are adjacent and can be visited together. If you have enough time, you can stroll around the ancient town and go to Erquan to take a look at the parks.

I went there at 5 o'clock. There were almost no people. I closed the shop. It was very quiet. There were many ancestral halls inside. Maybe I went at the wrong time. It should be better during the day.

Because I arrived in Wuxi in the afternoon, and it was raining. I saw that this place is a special place, but when I actually went there, I found that the shops were not open and there were not many people. It didn't feel very good.

In Jiangnan, there are not many ancient towns that do not charge admission fees, and Huishan is one of them. Gardens are not Wuxi's strong point, but fortunately the scenery still has its details. There are also many ancient artifacts that are buried in the soil and abandoned in uninhabited corners.

This was not a planned tourist attraction. I came here just to eat the crab meat dumplings at Yiqin Garden. I drove here after visiting the Three Kingdoms and Water Margin City.

Similar to other ancient towns, there are food and fun things to do. I will focus on the food.

Tofu pudding: Not far from the entrance, you can see "Erquan Tofu Pudding" and "Huishan Tofu Pudding". I tried Huishan and it was really delicious.

Crab roe dumplings: Not far after entering the door, I saw a "Qinyuan" store. I was wondering if it was the predecessor of "Yi Qinyuan". I thought I would just eat there, but I didn't expect that the more I walked inside, I accidentally discovered "Yi Qinyuan". I went in and tried the crab roe dumplings and fresh meat dumplings, which were quite delicious. I also liked the hot and sour soup.

There was a rhododendron exhibition when I went there, and the food and drinks were all good. The ticket for the ancient town was strange. It was open but the ticket was still on sale. I bought it for nothing.

The ancient town itself is free. You need to buy tickets to see Jichang Garden and the Second Spring in the World. It is very cost-effective to buy tickets on tb for 53. There are many people during the May Day holiday. It is nice to rent a table by the river to drink tea, eat melon seeds and chat.

It is characterized by its unique geographical location, beautiful natural environment and densely distributed ancient ancestral halls. It is the only neighborhood in Wuxi where the style of old neighborhoods is well preserved.

A specialty store that I have been to twice. The hot and sour soup is particularly authentic.

It is not recommended to go there. The square at the entrance is full of snack stalls and children's game stalls. Bad review
