Wangkou Ancient Village

Wangkou Ancient Village was built by Yu Gao, a minister of the Song Dynasty (rank three) during the Daguan period, with a history of more than 1,100 years. It is located at the confluence of two rivers and is named after the vast expanse of clear water, hence the name "Wangkou". The first settlers hoped that their descendants would be as long as the water, so the name "Yongchuan" was taken from the meaning of "the river is long" in "Book of Songs·Zhou Nan·Han Guang". It is one of the third batch of famous historical and cultural towns and villages in China by the State Council.
The ancient village is located in a hilly area, surrounded by green mountains and flowing water. There is a poem that says: "The chirping of birds and the crowing of chickens spread beyond the borders, and the light of water and the scenery of mountains enter the pavilion." The scenery is very pleasant. Since the Song Dynasty, Wangkou has been a place of flourishing literary style and has produced many talents. Among them, there are 5 Jinshi, 2 Juren, 7 doctors, 36 civil and military officials above the seventh rank, 10 bachelors, and 33 volumes of works. Therefore, it is known as the "hometown of books."
Wangkou was once a must-go place for the Huizhou Prefecture to reach Raozhou, Jiangxi Province via Wuyuan. It was also a wharf for Wuyuan County to connect with Northeast Township by water, and for transporting goods to Leping, Poyang, Jiujiang, etc. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there were many shops and merchants here, and the scene was prosperous. Although it has gone through thousands of years of vicissitudes, there are still many historical relics left.
The Yu Clan Ancestral Hall is located in Wangkou Village, Jiangwan Town, 30 kilometers northeast of Wuyuan County, covering an area of more than 1,000 square meters. The building is a central axis Xieshan style from the Qing Dynasty, with majestic momentum, rigorous layout, exquisite craftsmanship and unique style. It is praised by ancient architecture experts as an "art treasure house".

Wangkou is a village half surrounded by a river. There is no waterway in the village. There is only one main road running through it, and many alleys extend on both sides. Wangkou used to be a prosperous commercial port in Wuyuan, but now it is all desolate and depressed. The peeling white walls and the paint-chipped doors, even the bright red lanterns can't hide the atmosphere of decay. There are not many people doing business in the former commercial place now, and most tourists just pass by in a hurry and rarely stay.

Wangkou is a relatively low-commercialized village, most of which are the aboriginals of the village, but the corresponding scenery of this village is relatively small, so it is still possible to experience the humanities. We also went into a villager's house for dinner here~ There are very few people in the alleys of the village, and most of them are only villagers who come out to enjoy the cool and chat. I sighed many times: "This place is really suitable for anthropological field research~" (Professional disease is recurring haha) Occasionally, there are some shop signs on the main street, which are very retro. Looking at Wangkou Village from a distance, the leaves of the distant mountains have begun to turn red slowly, and the red and green are intertwined. I think it must be beautiful when the mountains are full of red leaves. In general, Wangkou is not very big, and there are not many places to visit. Unfortunately, we have to hurry. In fact, I still want to sit quietly on the stone road in the village with the villagers and chat for an afternoon~

Wangkou was born out of water conservancy trade, and its overall layout is very similar to Wan'an Old Street.

But the water in Wangkou is more delicate, so it should be more beautiful in spring and autumn.

In addition, the wood carvings in the ancestral hall are quite amazing. You can drive directly to it. It is not a formal entrance. The opening is awesome.

Other famous ancient buildings are still not open to the public.

If it wasn't included in the package it would be a bit worthless.

In addition, you can see the overall layout from the roadside viewing platform from Jiangwan to Wangkou.

It is quite far to drive from Wuyuan Station to Wangkou, about half an hour. After arriving at the hotel, I packed up for a while and went to the ticket office of Wangkou to buy a combined ticket for the scenic spot. The student ticket for more than a dozen scenic spots is only 105, which is very cost-effective. After buying the ticket, I entered the ticket gate of Wangkou. At the beginning, there were dried eggplants and pumpkins for sale. My friend bought some, and I bought some Qingming fruit, which is a bit like Qingtuan, but it is flat. I think the sweet taste is quite delicious, but the salty taste is not acceptable. Most of the people living inside are families, and occasionally there will be small handicrafts such as camphor wood for sale. When sightseeing, walk in the small alleys between the people. There is a river next to the alley, and the water is very clear. A few old people will sit on small wooden chairs and chat at the door of their homes. Every household will have a family motto posted at the door of their home.

Wangkou Village is surrounded by streams and has a strong atmosphere of life. Along a main route along the river, there are steps on the right to go down to the river bank below, and on the left to go deep into the village. Life here is pollution-free, pure, and self-sufficient. Small animals and livestock have returned to their original state of existence, and time seems to stand still. At the entrance of the village, I saw a group of women soliciting food to chat under a tree to cool off. A dog was lying in the shade of a tree not far away. A hen on the roadside brought her chicks to the vicinity where I was waiting for the car to watch the fun.

Wangkou sounds like an inconspicuous name, but when you stand on the bridge at the entrance of the village, you can see the beautiful Hui-style buildings on the hillside under the clouds, the tall and short old houses scattered around, the moss-covered stone walls, the slate roads shining with water after the rain, and the faces that occasionally pop out of the old wooden doors. The ancient flavor of the Hui style permeates the air, and I immediately fell in love with this ancient village.

Wangkou Village is built along the river, with a wide view and a cool breeze in the summer. From the perspective of a scenic spot, Wangkou can be said to have nothing. However, in the hot summer, there are few tourists. Walking through the alleys of Wangkou, watching the people on both sides making fires to cook or moving stools to enjoy the cool, you can also feel a sense of comfort and peace in the ordinary lives of the locals.

By Wood fish |

Wangkou was a distribution center for goods in Huizhou in ancient times. At that time, the river in front of the village should have been much wider than it is now, so the buildings in Wangkou were generally arranged in the form of a store in the front, a living room in the middle, a kitchen in the back, and a warehouse on the top. As time went by, land transportation became more and more developed, and Wangkou became more and more peaceful.

By The Fantastic Piggy |

There are not many tourists in Wangkou, and it is not commercialized. It has well preserved the architectural features and cultural features of ancient Huizhou. A river runs through the village, with ducks playing in the river, roosters swaggering around the village, and grandmas washing clothes by the river. Walking in the village, you feel happy and friendly, as if you are back home, comfortable, and can escape from all troubles.

Wangkou Village, named for its location at the confluence of two rivers and the vast expanse of clear water in front of the village, is an ancient Huizhou village inhabited mainly by people with the surname Yu. In 2002, it was awarded the title of Chinese Folk Culture Village and Jiangxi Province Historical and Cultural Village.

By Jun's promise must be fulfilled |

Although I didn't go in, I just saw the exterior and it was already beautiful!

By China-TravelNote users |

Wangkou is very beautiful, without too much commercialization. Walking in the alley can slow down time. It is a good attraction.

By Lan Juan |

Passing by, take a look at the panoramic view, mainly the ancient buildings have some characteristics.

By Those adventures you dream of |

The scenery is really average. I don't know if it's because it's still the off-season in early March, but there are not many people in Wangkou. Besides the dim river water due to rain and the Hui-style buildings, there is nothing special, so I didn't take too many photos.

By Murong Eighteen Swords |

It is a famous Chinese cultural village. The ancient streets, alleys and docks of Wangkou are full of cultural heritage and are praised by the world.

By Black mulberry |

I read comments from bee friends saying that Wangkou is similar to Likeng, and I thought that the interiors of Hui-style buildings should be similar, so on the way from Likeng to Jiangwan, I stopped on the road outside Wangkou Scenic Area for a few minutes, took a picture of Wangkou, and left without going in. I think it's beautiful to see the whole picture, and I personally like Hui-style architecture.

By Dead young man hahaha |

I didn't expect much before I went there, but now it's the village I often reminisce about. First, the carvings in the Yu Clan Ancestral Hall are beautiful, and second, the river water beside the village is really clear. It seems that no matter where I go, as long as there are beautiful mountains and clear waters, I like it and am intoxicated by it. It is more lively than Huangling, but cleaner than the ditches in Likeng. Soaking my feet in the stream is probably my best memory in Wuyuan.

By Susu who loves the earth |

Hui-style architecture, just looked around outside, no restricted area to see

By Mooner |

When we passed Wangkou, the driver stopped the car to let us take some pictures. The scenery was really nice.

By Grapes_July |

It is a village built along the river. The paths between the houses lead directly to the river. It retains its original appearance and the villagers still live their own lives. Take a walk along Tianjie ~ It is very comfortable. This is a village I particularly like ~ Family mottos are written on the door of each house. The exquisite wood carvings in the ancestral hall are shocking!

By NaNa_ |

Walking through the ancient and narrow alleys among the scattered houses, avoiding the afternoon sun, you can always find a cool place. The warm sunlight slants on the white walls and black tiles and the high horse head walls, and the marks of time seem to be clearer. The sparkling Jiangwan Water and Duanshen Water meet in Wangkou Village to form the Yongchuan River, which runs through the entire Wangkou Village. At this time, I was deeply attracted by the green mountains, clear waters and blue sky in front of me. Walking in the Yu Clan Ancestral Hall, three ancient osmanthus trees are quietly waiting. The seasons change, and the Xiangshan opposite is like a green barrier that protects generations of Wangkou villagers. From ancient times to the present, the villagers have never forgotten the village agreement made by their ancestors, treating people with sincerity and honesty, protecting every tree and grass, every mountain and water here. This is the harmonious development of man and nature, this is the action and determination of Wangkou people to protect their hometown, and this is the most beautiful Wuyuan in my eyes.

By Big, big, big |

The camphor tree at the entrance of the village has a history of hundreds of years. It is a standard configuration of Huizhou villages. There are always some ancient trees at the entrance of the village.

Yulitonghang is similar to today's warehouse, a middleman for cargo distribution. The most core building in the ancient village is the ancestral hall! Today's ancient village continues the beauty of that time, with happy villagers living and working in peace and contentment. Men farm and women weave, the Silk Road is busy and peaceful.

By Big Hae Walking |

The scenery of Wangkou Village in Wuyuan is quite classic, with obvious Hui-style architectural features. The small patch of rapeseed and peach blossoms at the entrance of the village set off the black and white buildings behind it, which is quite charming. You can also take pictures of the whole village on the road, which is very beautiful.

By Thirty Meters Deep Blue |

There is a small bridge in the scenic area, which is set against the clear river water and is quite a scene. In fact, Wangkou is a small village built along the river. It is more accurate to say that it is a small street rather than a small village. There are narrow paths everywhere.

By One man's team |

I didn't go in, but there is an observation deck on the side of the road where you can stop and take in the panoramic view of the small village of Wangkou.

By NONO's smile |

Pingdu Weir in Wangkou is located in the Shuikou River in Wangkou Village. Because of its L-shaped shape, the locals call it "Quchi Weir". It was designed and built by Jiang Yong (a native of Jiangwan, Wuyuan), a Confucian scholar and phonologist during the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty (1723-1735). Pingdu Weir is 120 meters long from north to south and 15 meters wide. Its southern end is close to the shore, and the weir head at the northern end is bent upward into a L-shape, leaving a 6-meter-wide boat channel offshore.

Pingdu Weir solved the contradiction of water storage, boat passage and water flow slowing down without gates, and is a masterpiece in the history of Chinese water conservancy construction. The completion of Pingdu Weir further promoted the development of Wangkou Commercial Wharf.

The dam has survived more than 200 years of impact, but its rocks are still intact.

Wangkou Sanxing (a relatively small Jingdezhen, it is not recommended to buy tickets alone, you can go there with a combined ticket)

By xixi |

Wangkou looks beautiful from above, and it’s the same inside, with houses in Hui style architecture.

By Year 18 |

I just took a photo of Wangkou Scenic Area on the roadside. Locals said that the scenic area is very similar to other Likeng scenic areas, there is nothing special, and there is no need to go in.

By Three cat cookies |

Just passing by ~ There is an observation deck where you can see the whole picture of the village. The observation deck is free.

By China-TravelNote users |

It's average when you go in, not as special as Likeng. In fact, you only need to take a picture of its whole picture from the highest point on the roadside outside (not the scenic spot). There are signboards on the main road at the highest point, and there are free parking spaces.

By Still wanting more |

The biggest attraction in the village is the Yu Clan Ancestral Hall. There is a viewing platform on the other side of the river outside the village for panoramic photos, which is a short walk across the bridge.

By Arctic Ocean breeze |

Wangkou is a village surrounded by water. The villagers in Wangkou are all surnamed Yu, and there are family mottos at the door of each house. I like these beautiful heritages of regaining traditional culture. I read the family mottos of each family carefully. The ancients left us a lot of essence, and we modern people have slowly picked it up again from the past contempt. It's a good start. There is a river next to Wangkou Village, with many wild ducks in it, yes, definitely wild ducks, and there are small bamboo rafts next to it that you can pay to take you paddling.

By Walking |

Ancient village, those who like to see old houses can see it, the natural scenery is nothing special, you can just stroll around

By Yao Shuocheng |

The biggest attraction of Wangkou is the "Yu Clan Ancestral Hall", a provincial cultural relic unit known as an "art treasure house". The ancestral hall consists of a mountain gate, a hall of worship, and a back bedroom, with gardens on both sides. The three ancient osmanthus trees in the garden are still fragrant this year. The brackets, ridges, eaves, brackets, and column bases in the ancestral hall are all exquisitely designed. All wooden components are skillfully carved and decorated, with more than 100 groups of various shapes and patterns of various sizes. In addition to the Yu Clan Ancestral Hall, because more than 95% of the houses in Wangkou still retain the characteristics and style of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the houses here have a sense of age. Walking in the rain, it feels like traveling back to the Qing Dynasty, which has a unique charm.

Due to heavy rain, I couldn’t fly the drone, so I had to walk two kilometers, cross the bridge to the viewing platform on the hillside opposite Wangkou, where I could overlook the panoramic view of Wangkou Village.

Maybe because of the rain, even though the commercialization level of Wangkou is not low, my sightseeing experience in Wangkou is not bad.

By Jerry |

Walking into the village, you can see the ancient street names. When you see these names, you can close your eyes and see the busy waterway docks at that time. In fact, these houses have become very modern.

By Wind Chimes |

Walking on the road, the scenery along the way is breathtaking. Before I knew it, it was already dusk. My luck was so good that I just caught the sunset when I was about to reach the Wangkou Village Observation Deck. The good positions had long been occupied by professional photographers with their cameras. I could only stand on the side and take a less professional photo of the quiet Wangkou sunset. The whole quiet village was reflected on the water, with the afterglow of the sunset...

By johnsonhu |

Almost all parking lots in scenic spots charge a 5 yuan parking fee. It seems that it depends on the mood of the security guards. It is not very formal. For example, no one comes to collect the fee at Wangkou. Other scenic spots will direct you where to park as soon as you arrive at the parking lot. Before you get off the car, you will be shouted "Boss, parking fee is 5 yuan". White walls and green tiles, bamboo rafts flowing by the water, and rapeseed flowers are probably a microcosm of this trip. There may be more wonderful scenery later, but for now, let's experience this village full of Hui style.

By Qin Ge |

The two most beautiful scenic spots on the east line are Xiaoqi and Wangkou.

By Sakura~Maple fox |

I didn't go in, I just went to the observation deck to see the whole picture of the village and take some photos.

By China-TravelNote users |

This time we passed by and did not enter the village. We looked at the observation deck and the scenery was very good. If you have time, you can go into the village to see the ancient buildings. This attraction charges an entrance fee to the village.

By Between Water and Clouds |

It's generally OK, there are no particularly good attractions. Compared with the other ones, it is average.

By A blue and white |

A small village along the river. It is not big and there are not many people going there. There are few tourists. There is only one stone road from beginning to end, and the scenic spots are distributed along the stone road.

By Keep exploring |

There are relatively few tourists. It is recommended to visit the village built along the river.

By 67 |

The village where people with the surname Yu gather is not particularly unique from other scenic spots in Wuyuan, but the ancient building of the Yu Clan Ancestral Hall has some characteristics.

By Sugar 🎀 |

You don't have to enter this attraction, just take some photos on the Wangkou Viewing Platform without wasting time.

By Qinling 007 |

The village is not big and it only takes an hour to walk around it. The inside of the village is average, but the scenery outside the village is nice.

By Be-Better |

Wangkou is generally okay, with mountains and water, but it is also heavily commercialized, with alleys full of vendors selling things.

By road |

It's beautiful, right? I stopped by to take some pictures, haha😄

By coral |

There are residential houses on both sides of the narrow alley, most of which have been converted into inns and restaurants. Each alley has its own origin. The reason why there are no mosquitoes in the Yu-style ancestral hall is that the wood used has a special fragrance. The plaque "Father and Son Zhushi" hanging in the middle means that both father and son were awarded the same official position of "Zhushi". Such a profound cultural history needs someone to explain it. You can take a bamboo raft out of the scenic area for 30 yuan per person.

By Clouds over the mountains |

It is recommended to go in and take a good look around. Any photos you take are beautiful.

By My name is Big Bear |

Standing on it, you can have a bird's eye view of Wangkou. Wangkou is not so commercialized. Local residents live their own lives in the village, retaining the original state of village life, washing clothes by the river and setting up stages to perform operas.

By betty |

I just looked at the observation deck opposite the village and stopped briefly to check in. I personally felt it was average.

By mail |

One of Wuyuan's favorite scenic spots. Wangkou is not as famous as Jiangling and Jiangwan, but Wangkou, located next to the river, is indeed the most beautiful. The two rivers converge at Wangkou, bringing clean water here. The business in the scenic area is mainly selling inkstones, and it is very comfortable to visit.

By Washing machine mopping |

The Wangkou scenic spot was a stop that exceeded my expectations during the trip to Wuyuan. I thought it was just an ordinary small village among many others, but when I went there I was a bit surprised.

There is an observation deck opposite Wangkou. Facing Wangkou, the bend of a river, with several bridges and a small village, it is really picturesque.

When you walk into the village, there is a river. After walking across the bridge, you can climb up the mountain opposite and follow the road to the other side of Wangkou.

The most beautiful thing is the water in Wangkou. It is very clear and flows calmly. Just looking at it makes you forget the hustle and bustle of the world.

You can take a bamboo raft downstream for 30 yuan per person and it takes more than ten minutes. The entire Wangkou is the shore and the scenery is very beautiful.

All in all, it is a place worth visiting.

By Sisi |

This station left a bad memory, so I don't want to say more, just remind everyone to keep the tickets. In addition, the best place to see Wangkou is not in the scenic area, but a viewing platform halfway up the mountain, where you can see the whole picture of the village surrounded by water.

By Handsome and elegant |

Wangkou, historically known as the "Land of a Thousand Smokes"

By Snow 3 Flying Who |

It's a very quiet and peaceful ancient village. The river is very clear. You can take a bamboo raft (30 yuan) to experience it. It feels good.

By PP Rabbit |

A small roadside scenic spot, you can take photos whenever you go. It should be nice with the sunset when there is a lot of water, but it’s a pity that it was noon when I went there.

By Xixuan |

Passing by here, Wangkou is still beautiful in the rain. There are relatively fewer tourists in the village, and it is relatively quiet.

By Yak |

Wangkou is a small scenic spot. The whole village is built along the river. Standing on the bridge and looking down, it has a unique flavor. Just after entering the village, there is a wide bridge. At the end of the bridge is a huge tree, whose name is unknown. Its lush branches and leaves engulf the entire bridge. There is a small house behind the tree, and there are bursts of lingering sounds coming from the house, which is very mysterious. You will see many people standing or squatting at the door with bowls in their hands eating noodles. They look very delicious. This may be a local tradition.

By BZ |

Wangkou is a small village that is not very commercialized. You can still see native children playing on the streets, women washing clothes by the river, and Hui-style buildings, mountains and flowing water, forming a beautiful painting.

By Da Zhuang |

Wangkou is an unexpected attraction. I thought it was just an ancient town with serious commercialization, but it is completely different from what I imagined. Not only can you see complete Hui-style buildings, but also beautiful scenery, which is very good. Recommended to visit

By It's Duck Brother |

The photos on the observation deck are beautiful. If you don't want to explore deeper, you don't have to go in.

No tickets are required for the observation deck

The building is also nice save for the night

But! There is a very tricky design

There is a bridge at the entrance that takes you to the opposite foot of the mountain and then there are stairs to go up. I thought there would be stairs to the top of the mountain to see the panoramic view.

However, there is no way to the top of the mountain after walking all the way

By Faredo |

To be honest, the scenery after Huangling became a little dim and felt just so-so.

By Sakan 213 |

The beautiful place is this viewing platform. There is a Yu clan ancestral hall where you can listen to the tour guide's talk.

By Xiaoman |

Wangkou Village, located in the northeast of Wuyuan, was called Yongchuan in ancient times because it is located at the confluence of two rivers and is named after the clear water. It was founded in the third year of Song Daguan (1110) by Yu Gao, a ninth-generation grandson of a court official who moved to Wuyuan. It is an ancient Huizhou village where the Yu family mainly lives.

By Sun Xingzhezze |

On the way to Lihang, I saw the scenery of Wangkou and decided to get off the bus. The ancient buildings and folk customs inside are very well preserved. Although there is commercialization, it is not as tiring as Likeng. I feel that the commercialization here has developed the local economy and has not damaged the local ecology. There are also explanations on the historical signs in each alley. I highly recommend it. There is an ancient forest opposite the bridge. I went there after climbing Huangling. I really didn’t have the energy to climb to the top of the mountain. I only climbed two floors. Due to time reasons, I didn’t experience rafting

By richen12 |

This is the last attraction I visited, so I am a little tired of it. It is also a traditional ancient village with Hui-style architecture, but it doesn’t feel as quaint as Sixi Village or as refined as Likeng. It is a village without any special features.

By zhm_jinan |

I didn’t enter Wang Village, but just looked at it from the viewing platform on the hillside.

By Twiggyice |

I like Wangkou very much. The houses here are facing the river. You can experience a different scenery here. It would be even better if I had the opportunity to stay here for a night.

After coming out of the Wangkou Scenic Area, you will pass the Wangkou Viewing Point on the way to the Jiangwan Scenic Area, where you can overlook the entire Wangkou Scenic Area.
